you absolutely already know this, but i adore your work. i think it's hard to avoid the pressure of being surrounded by people we might consider "true artists," but the fact is that, frankly, everyone who makes art is an artist.

before this year, i hadn't drawn a complete piece in nearly three years. the line work i did produce felt abysmal and i was tempted to give up. then, i saw your comic and i thought, "wow, that's really cute, and it looks like a fun style to emulate."

i drew you, pondering me, eating grass. and it WAS fun. i forgot how fun it could be. i can draw lesbian horses, or pony!WWX throwing a chicken, or me eating grass. i can even make shitty memes! and all of it, no matter how good or how bad, is fun again.

you bring a lot of fun to people here. that's something equally as important as people who cultivate fancy line work or expert level digital painting. i'm sure that's something you know, but i hope it never hurts to hear it.

happy first season, friend! i can't wait to see the rest.

As a chronic perfectionist, it's been a long journey for me to accept that 'done is better than nothing' and that the worst critical voice is my own. Sure there's people who've gone to professional art schools, and those with a more than a decade of experience on me, but honestly? Would I tell a child their sonic drawing isn't art? Just because they have no 'experience' or 'technique'? Absolutely not. So I'm no longer saying my efforts should not count as art.

At the end of the day, art is what we choose to make it. We have the power to create whatever we want. And we are going to use it to have fun! We never lost the love and fun for creation we all had as children, we just told ourselves it wasn't enough. But it really is B*)

You as Kyōjurōs wife

You’ve met Kyojuro one of two ways.

A; You’re a sweet civilian who just so happened to run into him; or B, you’re a fellow slayer.

Either way the outcome is the same. You saved him

Civilian! you could’ve seen and injured Kyojuro limping his way into your village after a particularly hard night. Now, this was before he became a pillar. He was caught of guard and just so happened to been having a rough day.

You know this guy! He’s the son of the infamous Flame Hashira; Shinjuro Rangoku. You have to help him!

You slowly approach the hot head *insert comedic drum sound* asking him if he’d like some help. No matter how much he insists he’s okay, you just couldn’t stand to see someone like him hurt. Not taking no for an answer, you drag him into your home.

You go through the process of caring for him. Cleaning his bandages, making him some tea, and warming up leftover dinner. You offer him to stay the night , not wanting him to put anymore strain on his already battered body. He offers a big smile in return and in his boisterous , albeit hoarse voice, he thanks you.

He stays for a couple of days after that to let his body rest. Helping with daily chores, making conversation, really doing anything but resting. He just wants to pay back the cute and kind little villager who saved him from a long and painful journey home.

“Thank you Ms. (Y/N)! For all the trouble you’ve gone through just to help me. I’ll be sure to return the favor one day.

And that he does.

He would come by everyone once in a while with treats and baring gifts. And through his visits, you two fell in love.

OR

You were a fellow slayer. A formidable opponent and very skilled. So skilled that you were selected to become a Hashira. You would’ve accepted if it wasn’t for your ill mother. She raised you and your five other siblings all by herself. Three of you became slayers and the other two set off to other towns to bring more money to the table. After your older brother died in battle, you, the former middle child, needed to become the protector of the household. You stayed in your area and trained hard to protect the ones you loved the most. Everything went well for a while until your mother developed a strange illness. No doctor could find a cure; not even Shinobu knew what to do. So you decided to step down from the plate and become an “average” slayer again while simultaneously running the household.

You and Kyojuro trained alongside each other for a while. He was the one who presented you your acceptance message. You were the best of friends and he formed a strong bond with your family. Especially your mother since he knew exactly how you felt. You two were one in the same. Even when you left he was right by your side.

No matter how you two met; he felt that in his big heart that you were the one for him, and now that led you two to marriage.

☀︎︎ Wakes up before you most days and kisses you all over to rouse you from your sleep.

︎☀︎︎ ︎Your family loves him. They always ask about him when you come around, it’s like you're not even there 🙄

☀︎︎Slayer! You’s mom loves him and calls him her son all the time.

☀︎︎Sometimes they’d just have long heartfelt conversations with each other.

☀︎︎That works vice versa tho. Senjurō absolutely adores you. Since he didn’t get to spend much time with his mother you’ve filled in that role.

☀︎︎Shinjurō on the other hand… a bit of a tough cookie *asshole*

☀︎︎ Lots of interrogation and questioning. He notices the way his boys flock to you and it makes him think of his late wife. He gets angry and feels like your trying to take her place in their hearts. The first time he met you; he made an explicit and degrading comment about you and Kyojuro lost it. You’ve never seen him that angry before. You were sure that his hair might actually catch on fire from the way he was grilling his pops

☀︎︎His son has never yelled at him this way before. It made the former flame pillar respect you a little more, seeing as you were the only one who’s made his usually cheerful boy use that sort of tone.

☀︎︎Would bring you to his mother burial sight so you could meet her. You two would bring f flowers and have a little picnic next to her headstone

☀︎︎One day you went to visit her alone to get some things off your chest. It felt comfortable to be in her presence even if she wasn’t actually there.

☀︎︎Making your way there you see your husband. At least you think you see him.

“Kyojuro, dear? I thought you said you were busy today,”

“I didn’t; because I’m not Kyojuro,” he turns around and it’s definitely not who you expected it to be even if you should’ve. It is his wife after all. It’s Shinjurō. He’s not drunk, which is surprising. He’s calm and collected. This is the first time you’ve seen him sober so you don’t know how to react. You just stand there; the flowers and food in your hand locked in a tight grip. You’re about to apologize and leave so he could have some alone time with her when he grabs the offerings from your hands.

“Sit,” he commands; and you do. He pops open the soup you’ve brought and starts eating, you grab a bowl of your own. Its about 30 minutes of slightly awkward silence; tension hanging in the air. You felt like you’ve spent a good amount of time here and get up to make your leave. As your walking away he grabs your wrist.

“Hey. I know I don’t always show it, but… I’m glad you came into my boys life. I realize I haven’t been the best father in law but I’m trying,” he stands up and pats you on your head.

“Thank you, kid. Really,” this is the most emotion you’ve seen from your estranged father in law and won’t miss the opportunity of creating peace. You throw yourself into his arms and a tear slips down your cheek. After feeling the weight of what he’s saying, he gently pries you off him, cheeks slightly rosey.

“Yea yea, sappy times over,” you smile up at him and make your way back home.

“Hey,” he calls out to you again

“Don’t tell the boys,” you softly smile

“Whatever you need, Shinjurō,”

☀︎︎All of the slayers know about you if they didn’t before. He would never shut about you. It pisses off sanemi so much he just mad cause his girlfriend dead.

☀︎︎ You two have a big house and he trains in the back of the estate all the time. Civilian! You would tend to the garden and watch him with lust and adoration. Slayer! You might actually join him. Enjoying the way his muscles rippled and the sun enhanced his natural glow.

“Kyojuro, my love? What are you doing out here so late?” He looks back at you and shoots you a weak smile.

“Just needed some fresh air is all,” you don’t believe him. You’ve known him too long to not get a hint when something’s bothering him. He never complains about anything, putting everyone else’s feelings above his own. That’s something you truly admire about him but it can get annoying; you just want him to feel like he doesn’t need to spare his own feelings for yours.

“Kyojuro… what is it, dear? What’s bothering you. Y’know you can tell me anything, right?” he just sighs shooting you another quick smile.

“Nothing you need to worry yourself with, little flame. Go back to bed,” you ignore him. Sitting down behind him you wrap your arms around his bare back pressing gentle kisses on his warm skin. He grips onto your forearms gently, leaning back against you, careful not to put all his weight on you. You wait for him to let it out. He sighs again.

“I-I had a nightmare,” he sounds ashamed, like it’s something that should never happen to him. You’re him continue.

“It was about you. I couldn’t protect you. I couldn’t save you. I was right there and yet… I could teach you in time. I’m-I’m sorry,”

“Oh love, no need to apologize. It’s natural to have nightmares y’know. It wasn’t real. I’m right here with you, always,”

“I know, it’s just… it felt so real,”

“But I’m realer. You can feel me can’t you? Hear me. See me. Smell me. Taste me,” you give a playful bite to his ear on the last one and he chuckles.

“I love you Kyojuro Rengoku. Nothing will ever take you away from me. As long as the sun stays in the sky and the stars stop shining, I’ll be right here with you,” he shifts his body around and grabs your waist to pull you into his lap. Giving you a chaste kiss on your forehead before pressing him to your own. He closes his eyes and smiles, more genuine this time.

... ok im genuinely surprised that so many people are sort of giving up on will and mike getting together when ive never been this confident about a ship??? ever???

if im wrong ill take the L but Cmon Now :

• the show recap purposefully shows the mike and will scenes, putting an emphasis on their dynamic instead of the mike and el scenes

• last season el and mike were going thru it but in the end, el tells him that she loves him and he stood there sort of slack jawed and stunned and couldnt say the words back even then within that scene

• which brings us to the beginning of s4 where mike still cant say ily to el even through the letters and correspondances hes had with her, either a) cuz hes going thru some insecurity about his feelings and the show is building up to a big romantic gesture or b) because hes internally struggling and a part of him knows if he said 'ily' back to el in a romantic context, it wouldnt be true

• meanwhile will is very blatantly pining what with The very pointed slow romantic tune that plays whenever he gazes at mike for a bit too long, and he evidently has a painting for mike and im guessing its contents will be revealed in volume 2 next month

• as for the way mike is treating will, giving him a bit of the cold shoulder at first, the awkwardness and avoiding his gaze, it could be because he feels guilty and weird about how he left things tense between him and his bestie, but then again mikes attitude feels like hes going thru it with el and it could b because he has some underlying feelings for will that he hasnt realized yet and is unknowingly taking out these frustrations on will (rip)

• and i did appreciate how mike apologized to will and that heartfelt talk they had as will was packing his stuff - again, the talks and discussions they had were continuously will trying to console mike despite his shit attitude towards him, so mike finally saying that 'he doesnt deserve to be treated that way' and the Pure hopeful expression on wills face and mikes big smile when they established each other as being each others besties again,.,.,. what was the reason What was the reason

• also this has nothing to do with anything but the background posters in wills room of Jaws 1975 and the og little shop of horrors musical (the lyricist to that musical being howard ashman, a gay man) ... gay!! Gay (source for this being im a mega stan of these two things and i am gay thank you vry much)

• back to the topic at hand tho, i feel like theres some sort of specific costuming choices what with the characters outfit colour schemes and id do a deeper analysis if i knew what i was talking about

• like smthing smthing about how mike brings el yellow and blue flowers and shes dissapointed with how he still signed the bouquet by writing 'from, mike' not 'love, mike', and from what google says about flowers blue can be interpreted as representing peace or a balm to anxiousness, i read somewhere that it also represented desire and romance tho, but for yellow its apparently 'the ideal color for symbolizing friendship'

• then again will has been wearing yellow and blue plad shirts and mike has been wearing an equally chaotic mix of yellow and blue in his outfits and those are just two contrasting colours that compliment each other well, indicating that the writers just purposefully wanted their outfits to be coordinated wink wink

• and to just really get into it theres this General disconnect between el and mike and how they just arent on the same wavelenght anymore, el's message that she leaves behind for mike also being signed with a 'from, el' not 'love, el', seeming to indicate that unless mike apologizes and professes his love to her in volume 2, their romance is kinda officially fizzling out

• honestly ive always rooted for mike and el pre realizing that will and mike was a possibility in the shows plot, and what with el going THRU IT in the following episodes of season 4, i feel like her and mike latched onto each other super hard at the start of the show and whats coming to light now is that their bond is just as valid if it remains platonic

• so we dont see the california gang as much as up until episode 7 it focuses on the vecna plot, and with the last 2 episodes of the season releasing in july being longer and the usual recipe for a stranger things finale being everyone meets up near the end, im guessing will, mike and el are gonna make their way back to hawkins somehow and join the others in the upside down, either intentionally or by force

• by that i mean that theres this specific payoff that has to come with the reveal of what will was painting in episode 1, and el herself says its for a crush, and we know that crush is mike, and so will is still dragging this painting around with him in his backpack for it to be revealed at a surely emotionally charged moment for him

• think of it this way: theres surely gonna be more mike and will screentime in volume 2 now that weve gone thru all of that setup, and whats the point of heavily implying will is crushing on mike all for mike to just be like 'oh haha thx bestie im an ally and all so hashtag gay rights good for you but i love el sorryyy 🤪'

• like Why parallel how mike and el cant seem to work as a couple anymore and mike just seems desperately trying to salvage their relationship and say what she wants to hear, all while having this constant pensive and frustrated look on his face vs how mike was being super dodgey and sketchy with will to giving him these super soft looks and almost being in tears when they had that conversation and reconciled as besties for like 10 seconds?

• it seems cruel to string ur (queer) audience along with the possibility of byler being real only for mike to admit how much he loves el romantically and will to end up heartbroken... like wow... such compelling storywritting (sike) and theyd get Major shit for it Instead of the potential praise if they were to just go thru with endgame byler

• and heres my final crackhead theory but since vecna feeds on peoples guilt and its the dissapearance of will and his connection to the upside down that opened a gate and the upside down being stuck in time on the day he did dissapear,.,., what if the closer he gets to hawkins and the gates he becomes its next target? will could have potential guilt relating to keeping his sexuality/crush hush hush, and being in the closet in the 80s is just surely a shit enough time so i can just imagine the possibility of him being vecnas next or final victim to pick on, and it would be the perfect wake up call for mike to panic at the chance of losing will Yet Again

• or idk im getting a cw supernatural vibe that will is gonna confess to mike, then get yeeted into super hell I Mean the upside down, but lets hope that this time mike pulls his head out of his ass and realizes that the reason things with el feel off is because hes been repressing his feelings for will because hes an oblivious and emotionally stunted dork!!!

I did NOT expect to be taken aback by LEONA’S 2022 White Day letter, of all characters 🤡 why Why WHY did it have to be FAKE CAT………………………………… LIKE DON’T GET ME WRONG, I REALLY LIKED JADE AND ROOK’S LETTERS TOO but those two didn’t really hit me the same as they did in the 2021 letters????

Jade’s 2021 letter was an excellent blend of his usual polite demeanor and a bit of trickery and teasing at the very end (”Truly, would I lie to you?”)! His 2022 letter maintains the polite tone, but it doesn’t have the same flavor as the 2021 letter did. Instead, the 2022 version ends with “This experience has been well and truly fascinating.” It’s still very much a Jade thing to say, but it’s much more dialed back and contemplative, like he’s musing over the ordeal and actually appreciative at having learned something more to the culture and the celebrations of land creatures. That’s, of course, endearing in its own way 🥺 DN;OUBFQEYOG8YwvyABOHSVFASVUOabyo It just doesn’t make me. FBIHviyoDVIYsvdibioDTVOEQFOYIBACBIHL screech as much as the implication that he could be duping me OTL I’M WEIRD OKAY LEMME BE 

Rook’s 2021 letter was very poetic and flowery! It was really wholesome and heartfelt, and it honestly made my heart melt a little reading it 😂 I actually a little disappointed with Rook’s 2022 letter asdbhhasyodboasbidsabid It wasn’t nearly as verbose as the 2021 one, but I do chuckle a little at the thought of catching Rook off guard with a gift. I’m not as much of a fan as him saying, “[...] I felt the urge to spring into dance on the spot” though. THE BIGGEST SURPRISE OF ALL FOR ME WAS LEONA??????? LIKE I DIDN’T EVEN BUY THIS LOSER’S 2021 WHITE DAY LETTER BUT THE FUCKING CONTRAST BETWEEN 2021 AND 2022 IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY????????????????????

In Leona’s 2021 letter, it felt like he was writing it while being held at gunpoint 😅 which I do believe is the vibe they were going for? Like, Leona treated writing the letter like it was a chore that he didn’t want to tend to. It’s cleare that he’s just going through the motions and that his heart isn’t entirelty into it. “Etiquette dictates that I must express my gratitude for the thoughtful gift you have given me.” It sounds like Leona’s doing all of this out of obligation, and he dislikes having to do it at all. He even closes out the letter by promising that he’ll MAYBE give you something in return, if he FEELS like it. BUT IT’S TOTALLY DIFFERENT ENERGY FOR HIS 2022 LETTER?????????? Man’s literally like: “So here you go, a proper message of gratitude: Thank you for your considerate gift.” Leona’s gift to you IS his thank you, because it takes so much for him to bite the bullet, swallow his pride, and be genuine in expressing his emotions. It actually means a LOT to hear this from Leona “emotionally constipated” Kingscholar 🤡 IS THIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN YOUR WHITE DAY LETTERS I SEE, KINGSCHOLAR????????????? BRUH IT’S EVEN WORSE BECAUSE THE FIRST PART OF THE 2022 LETTER IS “I’m no stranger to lavish gifts, but getting one from you was unexpected enough to pique my interest.” THE KEY PHRASE HERE IS “I’m no stranger to lavish gifts”. Leona has made it clear in a variety of voice lines and vignettes that he’s used to being treated like the royalty that he is; he’s USED to getting expensive things. This is so lovely. Thank you so much. It took me and my husband a few years to fall pregnant with our first, so Operation Babymaker brings back lots for me too! Having an excuse to flee the house and their paternal grandparents during the family Christmas, even if just for a little while, was a blessing for both Summer and Morty. Even Rick agreed and he grumbled less than the usual when they asked him to portal to the Moon Kingdom.

And there they were, standing in one of the elegant halls, each of them bearing a present for Virote.

Rick was the first to step up, dumping a pyramidal bottle in Vi's hands. There wasn't even a ribbon on it, but the bottle itself was pretty elegant, made of some kind of transparent violet crystal and decorated with a flower pattern in relief.

"I-It's ale from another dimension," he offered in lieu of an explanation. "I-It's like liquid weed, b-but it tastes like the fancy wine you like. T-The cool thing is that y-you need to drink really little to get high an-and it doesn't get you hangover. Y-You're fuckin' welcome."

"G-Geez, Rick," Morty muttered, coming to stand next to the man. "C-Could you be less grumpy?"

The answer was a "nope" with a loud emphasis on the 'p' and then Rick walked away before the teen could say anything else.

"Uh, I-I sort of made this myself," the boy said, returning his attention on Vi. "W-Well, Rick's AI helped, b-but the idea was mine an-and I designed it and all. I-I hope you'll like it!"

Inside the box he handed over was a snowglobe, the base decorated with little moons, each at a different phase. The scene represented inside was the capital of the kingdom. The composition was a little sloppy, betraying that the thing was homemade, but a lot of effort has been put into it.

Summer approached as last, merely handing Virote a small red envelop with a wink. Inside there was a blank business card, with a phone number written on it and a small message. "This is Grandpa's interdimensional number. Use it wisely...or not ;P"

Virote wasn't in the halls of main part of the palace like usual. He was in the halls of the tallest building closest to the city. The row of short commercial buildings extending north and south created a series of uneven shadows, with neon lights and streetlights shining here and there in the darkness. A hot pot restaurant's big lit-up sign blinked on its roof, flashing blue and red and orange. Power lines lay like a blanket over the houses. The stars seemed closer than usual. It all made for good spectating, he never got bored of the view. He was pretty sure he'd be alone for the evening until Ratana brought Rick, Morty, and Summer to him.

❝Oh, hey—!❞ He peeled himself from looking through the window and stood from the chair he had been in for the past two hours, making a beeline to them. And, much to his shock, they had presents. Rick knew him well. Something that could get him shitfaced without guzzling a ton of it? Godsend, that'd provide him with a lot of fun nights alone in his art space with nothing but his paints, canvas, and weird ideas. Bonus points for the bottle itself being ornate. However, Rick was already walking away before Virote could utter a thank you.

Morty's gift came next and it was beautiful to gaze at. And, it was clearly heartfelt. Virote moved it around in his hands and watched the flakes and glitter move around. Looked just like the city of Saengduean. ❝Morty, this is so pretty! You have a very, very beautiful mind if it conjured this, don't you think? I'm gonna place this on my vanity, so I can look at it a lot. Thank you. You’re incredibly creative, Morty.❞ Placing his first two gifts aside, Virote drew Morty in to his arms for a hug, swaying him just a tiny bit before letting go. ❝I'll take good care of it, I promise.❞

When Summer handed him the envelope, he met her expression with a curious look. There didn’t seem to be an actual holiday card in it; instead, there was a single, very plain card with a little note and the phone number. ❝Summer,❞ he slowly began, giving her a hug, ❝I don't know what's going on in that head of yours, but you're wild for this one. Thank you.❞ He said it low enough only for her to hear it. 

The card went directly into his pocket, he’d be sure to use it later.

Though, the thought of it made him... Nervous. Horribly nervous.

After all, it was just Rick. Rick was just some guy. Right?

I hope you've been having a good week so far. I just wanted to say hi and leave my thoughts on a scenario of yours. I read your "The Taming of the Tsundere" fic some time ago this summer and to put it simply, I enjoyed it so much; an incredible amount. I graduated high school mid-June of this year so it was such a lovely fic to read as I have now only began to let go of the fact that high school is over for me and I will be starting college in just a few days. Slowly but surely I am letting go. Thinking about it now, I am feeling pretty sad, hahaha. But it's okay and I am excited for the future.

Back to your fic, I absolutely loved the humor in between it all and how every bit humor, fluff, angst, etc. was balanced perfectly. You write with complexity yet your sentences were put simple and with clarity that I imagined every scene easily and that is probably the number one reason why I enjoyed this fic so much. I like the sort of "cold-open" in the second scene where we're introduced to Yoongi, Hobi, and Nam of course, but mostly the kind of relationship they have with each other and I enjoy this between every character as you wrote these relationships where it isn't perfect; it's casual and there's care and fondess between the characters despite times where they can upset each other and it's realistic b/c I can imagine it between me and someone else. Great job on that.

Another thing I want to point out is the dialogue and just how it fits so well with everyone and once again, is realistic b/c even my family members and I have used the same language and it's even more enjoyable to me as a reader.

One of my favorite parts that makes laugh is when Hoseok tells Yoongi to help the reader (in such a straightforward way: "Yoongi, go help her out," and that made me laugh already) and Hobi's reasoning is, "B/c she might need a big strong man to help her carry the supplies." LOL, I love it.

I'm sorry if this is getting a bit too long so I will leave it here (I can go on but I think I would just send message after message, hahaha). Other than that though, it was just such an amazing 33k slow burn fic and I am a fan of slow burns. I love the change of scenes so much and the detail you put into it and the use of imagery and figurative language was amazing and I thank you for making such a wonderful, comforting, and satisfying piece of writing. Satisfying b/c the angst was just at the perfect level and the following scenes where everything is slowly becoming good again was just as exceptional. I am so scared at this point of my message becoming too long but I just have to say: THE DANCING SCENE? W/ Namjoon tossing that imaginary lasso over Yoongi and Yoongi slowly hopping his way over to Nam to dance? Phenomenal. I also liked how you added the song "YMCA." It was just such a tiny and perfect addition and made me chuckle and play the song in the background as it's a favorite of mine to Yoongi making his way to fix things, lol.

But anyway, outstanding work you created and I'm still thrilled to have read it when I did; to have even found it at all. I'm going to miss high school greatly and while I didn't participate in many things or have even gone to a high school dance, it was just so nice to imagine myself in school that way one last time. Your fic was my spark of hope and excitement for the future that where I will continue to hope and work for good things to come during my time at college. Thank you very much once again and as I have read your pinned post, I will hold this fic close and I hope that every day brings you large amounts of happiness, comfort, and peace. This fic is on my list of absolute favorites for BTS.

everybody is honestly being so negative before the season is even out, especially with the reviews. they're taking them SO seriously when they're literally just random people's opinions on vol. 1. random people who don't care about the show the way we do or know the characters like we do. but suddenly one (1) reviewer says they found this thing out of place or disconnected from the rest or anything else tbh and DONE now this whole plot is gonna suck, throw it away!!!!! a, b & c characters are acting out of character!!!! the humor is bad!!!! they're sidelining everybody's favorites!!!! and i'm just here like, chill???? we haven't seen anything yet and reviewers are gonna have takes that you do not agree with, they're gonna think things you personally wouldn't thinking watching it. personal taste matters, interpretation matters. something that makes sense to you, might not make sense to them. something they talk about as if it's this HUGE thing might be a 10 seconds scene. the casual viewer does not watch this show the same way you do, to begin with.

anyway, just, you've been very positive and calming and has helped me quite a bit sometimes with not letting what people are saying get to me so thank you so much!!!!! you're the best 🥺

but s1 was so new and So Good. and i think with every season, there are those who want it to be as good as s1, or to feel and look like s1 again, you know, but it's a lot bigger in scope and story now than the show it was in s1. so there's just always a lot of high/specific expectations and a lot of room for disappointment

and i think a lot of the negativity just shows how much people do care about this show tbh. we've waited 3 years, we want it to be amazing and worth the wait, so hearing anyone say anything remotely less than positive about it has us on edge. any concerns and criticisms are absolutely valid, i just think we should wait and see for ourselves

now, i'm not really reading the reviews, but i'm seeing reactions and summaries and i have actually seen more positivity than negativity surrounding the season. and again, they've only seen through episode 7 at the most, with some only seeing 4 or 6 bc of the time screeners were sent out and effects taking a while to finish. they haven't seen everything and these certainly aren't their final thoughts on the whole season -- it's incomplete

i do, of course, have my own worries about this season, and they kinda align with the things you've mentioned above, but i'm waiting to make my own judgments on those when i've seen the season in full. i don't think any of them are worth completely discarding the season over, though, especially having not even seen the payout from the penultimate and final episodes

(i think any characterizations that might be a little off can be explained by the trauma and the suffering and the grief and the change and the etc etc etc. humor is another thing. it's really hit or miss with this show, i'll admit, and some of it really does feel out of place or ill-timed. i still say the dustin-suzie-singing thing was to break the tension in an otherwise very stressful ep, though)

and you are right, these are just the opinions of random people who haven't even seen the full picture yet, and everything does depend on their tastes and interpretations. you can tell that some of them just want to complain about the length of the episodes, too, so that's already negatively impacting how they view the season

basically, don't take what random reviewers say too seriously bc it is all only their own opinion, and it can't even be a fully-formed opinion yet bc of the two separate volumes. if you go into the season with what they think of it on your mind, it's very easy for your own enjoyment and anticipation of things to come to be impacted. go in with an open mind, form your own opinions as the story unfolds, and try to have fun watching !

the episode opens with a long pan of the goyang sports complex and a few quick shots of the various participants as they prepare for a day of fun and games. the teams are introduced to the audience one member at a time, first with TEAM A, each member receiving a solo zoom of their faces as they’re introduced, followed by the members of TEAM B.

“we have a competitive group of contestants,” RHEE JIAN remarks, taking up her hosting duties today dressed in a purple tracksuit that matches NEXT GEN’s branding colors rather well. whether the wardrobe choice is intentional or a coincidence is never revealed, let alone discussed on camera. “some who look very athletically talented,” the cameras focus on MOON CAMERON, SEO JUNHO, and LEE NAYOUNG in particular, “and others who… don’t seem to enjoy sports as much,” there’s a laugh in jian’s voice while this time the cameras focus on YEOM SARANG, SATO KOU, and JUNG JOOMI.

as the episode progresses, the viewer is taken through the journey of the sports day. while it’s all fun and games, points are earned by the teams as they complete each event. they remain in close standings as they enter the final game, name tag, and it’s a fierce competition that brings out the fighting spirits in many of the contestants. ultimately, TEAM A is announced the winner of the day. their prize? bragging rights, mostly, though they’re also surprised by a barbeque dinner prepared with help from the staff. TEAM B is given ramyun as a consolation prize and the winning team can choose to share their dinner with them if desired.

ultimately, the day ends as a good bonding experience between all of the contestants, even those on different teams for the day. they’ve all faced similar struggles throughout the competition and the music in the background changes to something soft and sentimental. between scenes of the contestants eating, playing, practicing, and making friends with one another, their voices are heard speaking heartfelt messages.

“i wasn’t prepared for how hard this would be, for how much i needed to put into it, and putting my everything into this has tired me out,” LEE NOEL’s voice is heard, “it’s been difficult finding energy, it feels like my days keep repeating themselves, like it’s the same every day, with a new song sometimes. “i hope that with the energy you give me i can continue practicing hard, hard so i can improve, so i can show everyone that i deserve this, so i can show myself that i deserve this.”

CHO HANEUL is heard next, his letter overlaid with clips of him and seojun, his best friend. “we’ve been through thick and thin together, and whenever i felt unsure, i knew that i could do it since you were there. thank you for being my pillar and thank you for being there and thank you for being my best friend. let’s continue to support each other always and go through the finale and come out successful.”

in perfect response, LEE SEOJUN’s letter is to haneul, and is read next: “i know you’ll do well and deserve the best no matter if you think otherwise at times. i’ll be supporting you just like i know you’ll be supporting me.”

“i know at times i can come across as cold,” PARK DOHYUN’s clips show him slowly becoming friends with the other contestants on the show as his voice his heard over the images. “i don’t speak a lot and maybe it’s hard to befriend me, but they have all included me in their own ways and I can’t be more thankful for that.” it’s heartwarming to see a shy, almost stand-offish contestant become so beloved by his teammates.

it may be unexpected given her performance on the program so far but a vulnerable side of LEE NAYOUNG is shown on screen as she also reads her letter aloud. “i thought, after my last contract was terminated, that my life was over,” she confesses aloud, “it felt like coming back to what…i was supposed to be doing? i feel like i’m learning so much. i feel like i’m returning to my old self again, but maybe better.”

“for as long as i’ve been alive, you’ve been there to hold my hand whenever i was in need of support.” YEOM SARANG speaks next, “i know it hasn’t always been easy for you, and for us, but there’s nothing i want more than to help you carry the weight you’ve been sustaining all alone; to support you like you always support me.” he doesn’t cry, but the emotion in his voice is tangible even without the viewer seeing his face as he reads, just the clips of him working hard in practice and progressing through the show. 

“it’s been hard, hasn’t it?” says MOON JINYOUNG, “not just for me, but you too. you’ve had to work hard too. harder than me, maybe. at least i’ve been chasing my dream. thank you for letting me do this. i’m afraid that when i blink i’ll wake up and it will have never happened. i’ve met so many of my heroes and so many new friends. i’ve learned so much. i don’t think i could ever regret this, even though it hasn’t always been easy.” there’s the vague sense that he might be holding back, that he’s not truly comfortable expressing deep feelings publicly, but the sentiment comes across nonetheless.

“i dedicate this letter to my sister seoyoon who’s back home in australia,” says MIN HYEJIN, a clip of her misty-eyed as she reads her letter aloud briefly appearing on screen before that too is taken over by clips of her progress throughout the show. “i miss you so much and wish i had the chance to come see you. it’s been too long. i love you unnie! thank you again for always being there to show me support no matter what i tried to do. i wouldn’t be here trying to pursue my dream again without you.” 

ZHOU RENYI clears his throat once before his voice takes over. “don’t laugh, ok?” he requests before continuing, “somehow i’ve made it this far. sometimes i still don’t really understand where i am, or how i got here. i never thought i’d be sitting here, doing anything like this. i guess what i really have to say is thank you for supporting me. i’m trying my best here, and i don’t know if anything is going to come of it, but you’re like a brother to me, and honestly, i probably wouldn’t be here, on this planet still, without you.”

“i’m sure you’re surprised you made it this far, right?” SEO JUNHO speaks next, “we both know how much more room there is to grow. but i believe in you. i believe you can do it this time. remember what we always say? never give up, never back down. make sure people always remember seo junho.”

MOON SAEA speaks next, the compilation emphasizing clips of her with her brother, cameron, despite her letter being written to someone else. “i want you to know that i’m here now. i’ve succeeded in making it this far on next gen.” there’s a defiance to her words that contrasts the sappiness of some of the previous letters. “i’ll make you believe that i can make it as a dancer, and as a performer again.”

“like most families, we don’t always agree the same or have the same opinions,” MOON CAMERON naturally is heard next, the compilation naturally flowing to focus on him more than his sister. “i can’t thank my parents without thanking my sister as well. I am lucky to have her by my side. she is a pillar for me and keeps me going because I would never want to disappoint her or mom and dad. if i want the best for them, i have to also try my hardest.”

finally, JUNG JOOMI reads his letter to himself. “you’ve come a long way in a few months. you went from not caring what happened to wanting to make the people that believed in you proud, determined to do your very best. you sang notes you didn’t know you could. people like you. most days that’s still hard to believe, but some days it’s not, and there are a lot more of those days now than there were before.” the young man’s shuddering breath and the way he holds back his tears is heard as the scene changes to joomi in the interview room, reading his letter. it’s the final clip of this compilation. “thank you for not giving up.”

the screen fades to black and a moment of silence is left for the viewer to absorb and process the emotions of all of the contestants who shared their heartfelt messages. a short message fades into view: thank you to you, the viewer, for supporting all of the contestants in their journey.

finally, the scene changes back to jian on the next gen stage. “the next episode will be our finale,” she announces, presumably in front of all of the contestants remaining. “you’ll be performing one of three original songs chosen for you by our viewers. let’s reveal the teams now.”

member by member, the three teams are revealed to the viewer with a short clip of the demo tracks to remind everyone what they voted on.

“this is your last shot at impressing not just the judges, but also the audience who will be voting for you and helping to decide the winners,” jian cautious the contestants, “work hard and put on your best possible performance. the contestants who end up in the top three positions based on a combination of audience votes and judges’ evaluations will be offered a trainee contract to any company they choose.”

“that’s not to say that no one else will be offered a contract either,” she advises them, “the runner-ups will be offered contracts to one of the three companies. so everyone, do your best! we look forward to seeing you on stage!”

with that, my turn begins playing and the episode comes to a close.

Now that I’m officially in the fandom, I would like to offer the idea that Trent did not suddenly become a disaster gay in the season two finale. This is the man who:

Originally commanded the press room like a shark scenting blood, only to start stumbling over things the second Ted came along: like needing to thank Ted for the glasses compliment, the awkward little gesture he makes after “bring it on, baby,” Daily Planet, the wink. It quickly reaches a point where the mood in the room has entirely shifted regarding him with everyone rolling their eyes and chorusing, “—the Independent”

“Coach Ted Lasso of America.” A truly awkward greeting that just happens to mirror Trent’s desire to expand on his own name? Okay, okay.

During the interview there’s that Trent.exe has stopped working moment when he’s compared to a Roomba. He is forced to sit among a sea of little kids (he pulls it off, but it’s inherently undignified) and outs himself as a nerd by rushing to explain what A Wrinkle in Time is to a guy who hates him.

The first “date” involves Trent failing to speak up for himself about what he wants to eat—sure, let Ted order—and immediately experiences intense regret as the food is so hot he’s stumbling over his own words. Better yet, Ted asks him what he loves and Trent is caught with a mouthful of water, blinking in panic, and doesn’t even come up with a save himself, but just hastily agrees with Ted’s prompt. Not very smooth anymore, huh? He’s then treated to one of Ted’s heartfelt speeches and the disarming revelation that yes, Ted likes him, so Trent… runs away. He legit runs away. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think people who actually have tight deadlines that night agree to dinner in the first place, only to skedaddle when the food gets there (whether they like the food or not). He was beating a hasty retreat.

Later Trent appears to ditch his date just so he can get a quote from Ted. “Of all the pub joints,” he says, as if Trent doesn’t know exactly where Ted lives and what places he frequents after all that research. Poor mustache man is waiting out in the cold while Trent tries to flirt under the guise of a professional just doing his job. This is also the first time we see his awkward, but supremely adorable, “Love our chats” as an exit strategy.

A lot of fans have expressed disappointment or disbelief that Trent warned Ted about the article over text message, but I suggest that this man is too much of a disaster to manage that conversation in person. Text is far safer, especially after the Indian debacle.

THEN we get the scene where Trent:

a) Waits an undetermined amount of time to talk to Ted in person.

b) Waits in a sexy wall lean pose and is careful to stay there when Ted spots him. Trent doesn’t rush after him like he did with Jamie. He wants Ted to see.

c) Admits that he tanked his carrier just to do right by Ted. Nbd, bestie.

d) Draws attention to his cool fashion and even cooler hair.

e) Makes the super sexy decision to admit he can’t ride a bike.

f) Makes the even sexier decision to compare Ted to his dad.🤦‍♀️

g) “Love our chats.”

h) Hopefully offers Ted a ride home and, when he’s turned down, resorts to a freaking finger gun.

i) Realizes that in his excitement to see his crush he managed to lock himself out of his car. That “Shit!” contains both frustration and intense relief that Ted didn’t accept the ride and see him floundering. 

Conclusion: Trent has always been a disaster gay in front of Ted, it’s just been getting worse. And I for one think that’s beautiful.

ZHONGLI:

– Zhongli would be a very chill study partner. He will always keep his cool and focus, never letting his attention stray away from less trivial things. If he can focus, he’ll focus. There’s always this sense of comfort surrounding him that brightens up your mood and productivity. The both of you are sat in this long table, papers, books, and cute matching pencils are sprawled about. You lean your head on his shoulder, as he serenades you with his deep and butter voice, explaining all the formulas to you. Being able to study in peace and quiet with him is always a blissful experience. He never fails to brew you green tea (as it helps the brain function) even if that meant going down to the kitchen at 2 in the morning. He always brings a small humidifier and some essential oils with him that can help brighten up the study mood and that emits a wafting vanilla pinecone scent to keep you happy. (He’s just fancy like that.) When he doesn’t understand the concepts right away, he’d turn to you, his sharp amber eyes gazing at yours with nothing but innocent and love, and asks: “(Y/N)... what reference is this supposed to be? pepe the frog? kermit the frog? here come dat boi? aren’t they all just amphibians? what are the differences between them? I am very intrigued.”

CHILDE:

  – Childe loves a challenge. An academic challenge. He loves the thrill of finishing school works the night before the deadline, he loves studying for a pop quiz twenty minutes before the bell rings, and most importantly, he loves to pretend he doesn’t know how to solve point a to point b if that means getting to spend time with you as you tutor him on how to do so. He’s at the top of the class, He’s popular and friendly, He’s the captain of the Archery Team, and one of the vice council members of the Fatui Club. But, no other title will ever come close to being your study buddy. You and Childe always chill on the bed whenever you study. Especially when the both of you have the sudden urge to just laze around. Well, it is the wee hours of the night, so just lounging around and trying to resist the urge of sleep is pretty understandable. Sometimes, the two of you would take power naps in between study sessions. This meant cuddle times! Childe will always cuddle with you, (he’s the big spoon and you are the smol spoon) and often times you would be immersed into your textbook while he’s scrolling through his phone and looking for some of the current and popular memes. He’d poke you on the cheek and show you what he’s found. It was quite annoying sometimes and you would reprimand him for it, but it never fails to make you laugh. You jokingly suggested one time that the two of you sneak in the library after closing hours, and your chaotic boyfriend turns to you with the biggest smirk plastered on his face. “Let’s do it baby. I know the law.”

DILUC:

–You and Diluc are the cutest pair of night owls. So, studying late at night is never a problem with him because with the help of each other, the both of you are unstoppable. An actual power couple. Batman and his love interest who? I only know (Y/N) and Diluc. Mondstadt University should be giving you the title of #NoSleepGang for the “Campus Cuties” awards because the two of you are able to ace every test still despite lack of sleep.  You and Diluc are very very organized. The both of you own matching couple planners (that the both of you had gifted to each for Christmas) and have your entire study schedule planned out already. Since the two of you prefer to study at night, your dates are usually done during the day. Which meant never having to worry about the upcoming finals whilst you’re at a cute little café with him. The both of you have respective desks whenever you study together, but you never fail to gaze at your crimson-haired boyfriend with the cutest pout and biggest puppy eyes. He always gives in and next thing you know, your swivel chairs are practically glued next to each other and the both of you are cuddling in your seats. One thing that Diluc never fails to do is pamper you with comfort food or little gifts that you love after a long and tiring week of hell (aka exams) It’s such a sweet gesture and the blissful relationship that you have can’t get any better than this.

KAEYA:

- You are the Lawful Good to Kaeya’s Chaotic Evil. Kaeya is always tempted to ask for answers from your professors. He’s quite the teacher’s pet, but with good intentions. That’s just how he rolls. Every time he jokes about going to the faculty to help out and the answer sheets are just out in the open, waiting to be snatched, you always glare at at him and punch him softly on the arm, every time he tries to bring up the idea. To which he would always reply with, “I’m kidding. Just kidding my love.” You and Kaeya have amazing study hacks. He is always able to find a movie that is somewhat related to the topics that the both of you are currently studying about. For example, when the topic was an introduction to different branches of science, Kaeya chose Big Hero 6  as the “Educational Movie Of the Day.” He is always able to find something fun and informative for the both of you to watch. Well, Kaeya does find fun and interest in everything. Another effective strategy that both of you do is every time you or him get an answer right, you reward each other with either a kiss on the cheek or a bear hug. Both of these affectionate gestures give you butterflies in your stomach anyway, so it doesn’t matter which is which. With the ideas that Kaeya constantly makes up every single day of your study sessions, there’s a high chance that you’ll never fluke a test ever again.

“Oh. That’s pretty cool of you (Y/N). You got 30 correct answers! If we count everything, so I basically gave you 15 forehead kisses and 15 bear hugs. Congrats! I know we’re going to ace our finals!”

XIAO:

– Xiao is extremely intelligent and talented in a myriad of things. However, he lacks self-confidence. You’ve sworn to your boyfriend that you’d help him gain confidence in his academic abilities. Which is why you became study buddies in the first place. It served as dates with him too! Although he stubbornly refused at first, his reasons being that he can do things by himself and he doesn’t need any help. You continued to encourage him that this was going to help the both of you and it was a way for the two of you to bond, and Xiao hesistantly agreed right after. As the captain of the soccer team, “The Liyue Adepti”, The only free time that Xiao has was during the evening which is the reason for your scheduled late night studies with him. This brought so much more intimate and sweet moments with him though! It meant sleepovers with him, midnight snack runs, and casual early morning strolls in the park. It became sort of a routine. Your hand interlaced with his, the crisp morning air, the little chirpings birds, and the tranquil swaying of the trees brought so much comfort to the both of you. Xiao would be the type of student to not speak up unless he’s called. Even if he knows the answer. The both of you sit on some floor pillows whenever you would study. So, whilst you read aloud, Xiao always hugs you from behind, resting his head on your shoulder.

“I don’t deserve the patience and love you give me, (Y/N). I am eternally grateful for everything you’ve done for me. I hope you know, that I’ll always be here for you.”

ALBEDO:

- Being the university’s library assistant has it’s perks. Access to infinite knowledge, quiet solitude within the library walls, and being able to hang out with your boyfriend. It was truly a perfect deal. After classes, Albedo would be heading straight over to the library to do his work. You’d meet him there and wait until he gets his work done, and then the two of you head home together or have dinner. Albedo likes to plan things in advance. He’s quite busy, being a part of university’s alchemist group and as a library assistant, but, he will always study with you. He even brings Klee with him at times too! She’s always an energetic and cute addition, + she tattles on and on about how in love Albedo is with you and how he would never shut up about you at home. Albedo puts a lot of effort into creating review materials for the both of you. He makes very intricate drawings of modules, dioramas of certain science models, and has all the formulas memorized for him to list down. He’s a genius after all, and although you’ve constantly told him time and time again that he doesn’t have to make a review paper specifically catered to you, he still insists. He always gifts you one whenever it’s exam week (he adds extra detail to them during your finals) The cutest thing about these papers are scribbled about in all of the pages. The cutest doodles of the two of you with hearts and flowers drawn all over. Albedo + (Y/N) is even written in the last page, along with a heartfelt message: 

“I put all my faith and belief in you, (Y/N). I know you can do this. I’m proud of everything you’ve reached so far, my beloved. and I know you’ll reach greater heights. Let’s continue to excel and thrive together. I can’t wait to spend the rest of this journey with you.”

My friend and I were talking the other day and made some HCs about the AOT characters when they’re drunk— I shall share a them here 😎🤙

The 104th Gang

Eren:

- Angry drunk

- To quote my friend, you would say something around him and he's just "ohmmy GODDD shutttt the fuck UP”

- It literally doesn’t matter what you say he will tell you to shut up

- Picks fights for no fucking reason, especially with Jean

- If they’re out to drink he would start a fight with a stranger

- Mikasa literally has to drag him away from fights

- Probably drinks too much and vomits for HOURS and then brags about how high his alcohol tolerance is

- Claims he doesn’t get hangovers but everybody knows he’s lying because he will absolutely just zone out of every conversation the next day

- Always looks like he is on the verge of vomiting again

Mikasa:

- Does not drink because she has to babysit Eren

- However when she does she does not drink a lot

- Probably gets like really flustered and embarrassed, maybe a little touchy b/c her head hurts or something

- Like she’ll lay her head on Sasha’s shoulder meanwhile Eren and Jean are yelling at each other in the background

- Does get a hangover but usually it’s just a headache and she’ll be EXHAUSTED

Armin:

- COMPLETE fucking lightweight oh my god

- Do not give this man alcohol he will absolutely get wrecked

- One glass of wine is probably enough to get him tipsy

- I can’t decide if he would be the kind of person that gets really emotional and cries about everything or if he would go on long drunken rants about the most random shit

- Probably both

- Like he would be crying about the fact that he learned about otters having a favorite rock or this REALLY round corgi he saw last weak and it was just too cute

- Mikasa has to babysit both Eren and Armin whenever he drinks because Eren will absolutely try and drag Armin into his fights

- And with the drunken courage he has Armin would absolutely join in by yelling or hyping Eren up

- He becomes such an enabler

- Would have a hangover if he didn’t pass the fuck out and sleep the entire next day

Connie and Sasha:

- Two for one deal, they are always hanging out whenever they drink

- They’re the most CHAOTIC fucking duo ever, like they would somehow get their hands on a bunch of firecrackers and let loose

- Sasha would probably try and talk to any animals near by

- Connie would be laughing and saying shit like “SASHA the dog can’t fuckin’ talk back 🙄”

- They spend their hangovers bitching and whining about how much it hurts

- Probably would wrap themselves up in blankets in a dark room and snacks and spend the whole day just waiting it out

Jean:

- Same thing as Eren

- Except he also gets more flirty, but it’s not good and usually he ends up embarrassing himself and scaring away the girl he was talk to

- Finds Connie and Sasha and joins them on their shenanigans if he ain’t arguing with Eren

- Probably claims he has really good ideas and then next thing you know all three of them are in a police station and it’s definitely his fault

- “What the fuck made you think taking that woman’s dog was okay”

- “It looked SAD, Connie! And Sasha helped me!”

- “NO—“

- Spends his hangover day with Sasha and Connie

Historia:

- The most giggly fucking drunk you will ever meet

- Laughs at EVERYTHING and asks really dumb questions because suddenly she just has one brain cell

- Also a lightweight just not as bad as Armin

- Ymir has to babysit her and then when Ymir is drunk is the other way around

- They take good care of each other

- Ymir thinks she’s the most adorable thing ever and probably gives into every dumbass request Historia makes

- “Ymir! Let’s go out to eat!”

- “Hist, it’s 2am.”

- “So? There’s someplace open somewhere!”

- “...Fine.”

- Also sleeps her hangover off but Ymir has some water and pain meds ready for whenever she wakes up

Ymir:

- Oh dear lord she becomes very cocky and flirty

- Hangs off Historia’s shoulders the whole time and absolutely starts a fight with whoever looks at her gf

- Eren tried to fight her once and he got his shit beat

- The next day she would be so dramatic about how much pain she’s in just to get Historia to pay attention to her

- And ofc Historia always does < 3

The Warriors:

Reiner:

- Mans becomes such a an emotional bro

- Like he will throw an arm around literally anyone and go off about how much he just thinks they’re the darndest thing

- “Bert have I ever told you how great you are?”

- “All the time. Like a lot. You’ve said it 12 times in the last 10 minutes. Are you okay?”

- Completely denies it happened the next day and pretend he doesn’t feel like shit

- Bertholdt would find him dead to the world on the couch in some weird ass position and then force him to get up and go to bed

- “Dude you smell like ass.”

- “Shut up and just get me some water please.”

Bertholdt:

- Does not drink a lot at all especially around the 104th

- He has to make sure nobody fucking dies, especially Reiner and Annie

- He would have a beer or five with Reiner every so often and then he’s like really clingy and cuddly

- He’s embarrassed about it the next day and also pretends he never got hammered

- Sometimes one of the 104th will walk into their house and Bertholdt would be squished betweeen the fridge and the counter

- He has somehow made his way into the kitchen and will just fall asleep it the weirdest fucking places

- Reiner leaves him there because he feels to bad to move him when he looks strangely comfortable all twisted

- Whenever he and Reiner drink together they will send drunk snaps to their friends

- “Bertholdt just messaged me???”

- “Is he with Reiner?”

- “Yeah I think s— oh no.”

Annie:

- Doesn’t drink a lot either but when she does she also tries to start fights with people

- It never works out and she ends up having really deep and heartfelt conversations with them

- Like I imagine her trying to fight Armin and he’s just shaking I’m his boots and then she just stops and says

- “Ya know, sometimes I get really sad...”

- And so begins the start of their friendship

- For all the AruAni shippers I feel like she would be really protective of Armin and make sure nobody starts anything with him

- Or if they’re with Eren and the gang she will throw hands with Eren if he tries to drag Armin into his disputes

- She also probably hangs around Mikasa to make sure she’s okay and to pretend to hate it whenever Mikasa lays on her shoulder or thigh because she feels sick

- Banysits Reiner and Bertholdt whenever they’re drinking together, and then bullies the fuck out of them the next day

- “You guys are dumbasses.”

- “It was REINER’S idea!”

The Veterans-

Levi:

- DOES NOT DRINK even though he absolutely would

- He like becomes such a fucking mom lowkey especially whenever the kids are getting out of hand

- He’s dealing with a bunch of toddlers plus Hange and Erwin come on

- “Don’t touch that.”

- “Put that down.”

- “Quit yelling.”

- He never offer to clean them up or get them anything because that’s disgusting, however he does make sure everybody is at okay before leaving

- Like that they’re all breathing or nobody is missing

- After that he’s out and then the next day he just stares at them like the most disappointed parent ever

- He tolerates Hange and Erwin a little more, like they both get clingy and he actually lets them just hang off of him or something even tho he hates it

- Would probably hold Hange’s hair back if she throws up, or at least make sure it’s tied up. He has to resist the urge to vomit himself because he just cannot handle it at all

- But then he would just leave her on the bathroom floor asleep

Erwin:

- Oh boy he probably gets so emotional

- The complete opposite of his usual personality it’s so fucking funny

- Will cry about anything and once again like Reiner and Hange will talk about how great you are

- Doesn’t remember SHIT the next day and literally has no clue he acts like this and refuses to believe it whenever somebody tells him

- Hange recorded it once and he just “😐 Delete that, please.”

- Hangs around Levi and is very grateful that he lets Erwin be an annoyance

Hange:

- Tells the kids to be careful with alcohol and then immediately is found face down in a bush

- She becomes like 10 times more bubbly and absolutely batshit

- Laughs really loudly at everything

- She and Armin would get into excited like half conversations about fun science facts or whatever

- Like they absolutely geek the fuck out

- She also probably goes off about how much she loves everyone

- “LEVIIIIII!!! You’re so WOMDERFUL!”

- “Thanks. Now get off of me, bitch.”

- Levi has to babysit her and Erwin LMAO he’s the designated driver every single time

- Always knows the perfect cure for a hangover so she doesn’t usually have a really bad one

it’s so bad that no one even asks peter for his class notes anymore because, well, for one thing, that boy barely attends classes, and for another, trying to make out what it says will blind you and permeate your eyelids

y/n is probably the only person who can read peter’s medical shorthand. she has absolutely zero (0) problems reading it and the avengers are BAFFLED

this one time, peter helped morgan make really ~extravagant~ christmas cards with glitter and fake snow (it was GREAT) but since she’s like 4 and can’t write, he wrote sweet little words inside the cards for her and then gave it to tony and steve

steve, whispering: “your eyes are burning too, right?” “i can’t even tell if it’s nonsensical symbols or witchcraft???”

tony’s handwriting is surprisingly neat? like, actually…quite nice

no one really knows why, but he has this thing where the letters just have to be the same size, on a straight line, and tilting at the same angle otherwise he will have a nervous breakdown and fight you in the nearest parking lot (as you do when being confronted with any inconvenience as a grown adult and avenger)

but because that is too stressful, tony barely writes down anything. ever. he just tells F.R.I.D.A.Y. to set a reminder and calls it a day. last time he picked up a pen was in 2009 and that was just because he couldn’t reach an itching spot on his back

the one time he does write something down though, hell breaks loose

“wait is tony holding a pen?” “tony are you writing? am i seeing things? are you ok—are you dying?? let me get the others DON’T MOVE” *distant crashing sound* “gUYS—”

two seconds later, everyone is huddled around tony, straining their necks, and trying to get a glimpse at his little piece of paper

“what do you think it is? a love letter?” “maybe a heartfelt complaint” “probably a plan for world domination” “he’s got those on flash drives, it’s a suicide note” “it’s a grocery list. fuck you guys”

thor has the handwriting of a little child

it’s precious. it makes all his letters and postcards from Out Of Space™️ look like they were written using the comic sans font. he also adds an excessive amount of stardust. it’s wonderful

steve’s handwriting is your typical average jo. he’s an ~artist~ and he is american so he mainly writes in capital letters because he thinks it’s Patriotic and Aesthetically Pleasing

he’s also the only one who will pick up the newspaper in the morning, but it’s mainly because of the crossword puzzles because!! boy oh boy!! he LOVES them!!

he thinks they are SPLENDID and MIND STIMULATING and even though he does have the brains for it, sometimes there are gaps that he just can’t fill, so he writes down anything in fat capital block letters and casually thrusts it in other people’s faces

then he runs off so no one can see his actual answers like cardi b being a jeopardy star

bucky barnes has the handwriting of a founding father

the others find out about this because y/n had asked him to write down a recipe for her since she had broken her arm, so he did, but she just never had the chance to look at it

until one day, y/n whips out that recipe out in the kitchen and peter is standing behind her

“is that……the constitution??”

it’s not, but bucky really got into calligraphy when he was in wakanda. at first, he only did it for fun during his free time with the goats

but now he feels confident in his cursive and doesn’t see why he shouldn’t use it daily

and the more bucky practices, the more he ~dresses up~ his letters

so what starts out as readable-to-the-average-person cursive turns into what looks like 9 loops and random swirls of hell

he LOVES it

and the avengers can tell that he loves it so they keep making up excuses for him to write out stuff for them just to see the little glint in his eyes

“bucky, can you sign this for me?” “why?” “no reason” “peter, i’m not your legal guardian? aunt may has to sign this” “just write down her name” “what??” “i can see you want to. just do it” *proceeds to happily forge signature*

it doesn’t even matter that everyone kinda struggles to read bucky’s pretentious cursive. it’s beautiful. and if you squint really hard, you’ll get the gist

“y/n, bucky left me a sticky note that just says punk. do you know why?” “does it matter? it looks like a prop from a period drama. frame it”

the only person who’s not impressed by bucky’s handwriting is tony alias mr. practical

tony needs everyone to fill out some forms and while handing them out, he looks bucky directly in the eyes to say “and make sure us peasants can read it”

but one day, when tony’s sick and stuck in his room, peter and y/n have the idea to make a little card for tony to wish him a speedy recovery and everyone has to sign it and write a little message

so that’s how tony ends up with the ugliest, strangest, and most magnificent card the world has ever seen. ~handmade~ by the avengers

there’s stardust, and glitter, and neon paint, and a clash of 20 very distinctive and one-of-a-kind handwritings

tony tries to brush it off, but to this day it may or may not still be on his night stand at all times so he can look at it every night before going to bed <3

Spoilers for The Mysterious Benedict Society Episode 5 below the cut! So much to analyze this time.

The fitting scene is brilliant. We haven’t heard classical music in this show yet, and the choice of Chopin’s Military Polonaise (I had to Google that) sets a different tone--Curtain has, for the moment, conquered, and the boys are entering a new world of ostensible grandeur and luxury, as further highlighted by the detailed shots of the fitting process and its paraphernalia.

(I learned what a half break is. It’s about a half-inch’s distance between where the trousers end and the shoe is visible. This break is supposed to be particularly flattering for short gentlemen, which makes it a reasonable choice for a couple of eleven-year-olds.)

Reynie observes that the uniform makes him feel “confident,” while Sticky’s adjective of choice is “important.” This reflects the different emphases Curtain’s manipulation has for each of them. He appeals to Reynie’s cleverness and leadership and makes him feel capable. In the post-Waiting Room conversation, Curtain made Sticky feel insignificant, but now that he needs to use him, he’s switched it around to build up Sticky’s sense of importance with tactics similar to what he’s used on Reynie. Being so flattered by the same person who tore his self-esteem down is clearly having an effect on Sticky--his “Thank you” is particularly heartfelt. When the boys are sashed, Curtain continues the individualized appeals by stressing “responsibilities” to Sticky but “privileges” to Reynie. It’s all very carefully thought out.

Is Curtain’s pointed comment about the boys coming to LIVE at the same time being “written in the stars” a callback to the Gemini message? And is it just me or does he seem to zone out a little at some point in this conversation?

The Waiting Room door is visible near the mirror while the boys are being fitted, like a threat, a reminder of what can happen to them if they mess up. It’s not in the boys’ line of sight so much--the honor and excitement of their new uniforms are distracting.

All the food in this show looks amazing. The children’s breakfasts are a thing of beauty.

Sticky’s remark, “I’m not going to apologize for knowing things,” is rather bold for his usual timid self. The new sense of importance is getting to him. (Not unlike his arrogant moment in Perilous Journey.)

“You should lean on me more,” says Constance, and she’ll go on to prove why. They seem to be giving her an arc of initially feeling frustrated at having her gifts overlooked by everyone.

The symbolism of the Messengers’ tables being on an upper level! And the boys don’t take their food when they move up? Oversight? Intention to return to the girls when possible? Sudden lack of appetite at the prospect of having to hang out with Martina?

Mr. Benedict makes his first appearance in this episode lying down. Just woken up?

I am baffled by the blue beret scene and dying to know where they’re going with this. Why does Curtain want a beret (beyond his usual devotion to appearances)? Why is he having Dr. Garrison (a scientist, not his PA) get it for him? Is it going to be put to Whisperer purposes? Why is the beret on Miss Perumal’s title card? Will she contrive to get on the island by delivering the hat? What’s with Curtain’s inscrutable expression after making this choice? Is he zoning out again?

In the book, all four children get into Curtain’s lair and find out about the Improvement plot. For this adaptation’s purposes, having just the girls do it makes sense. They need their own adventure while the boys are on Messenger duty. 

Isolating Constance for the first time is an effective way to develop her character and slowly reveal her potential, which we haven’t seen much of previously. Her dismissal of the sculpture to Kate but being moved to tears by its beauty when alone says a lot about her.

Costuming/appearance is highlighted in this episode especially, and the contrast of the look of Mr. Benedict and his associates with the aesthetic of Curtain and the school is marked. A lot of warm earth tones and thick, practical fabrics and softer lines--utility over style.

I love the look on Mr. Benedict’s face as Miss Perumal is detailing her sleuthing process. He’s like “how soon can I hire this woman?”

The Whisperer does not look like how it’s described in the book (hair-dryer-like helmets, sitting back to back, handcuffed to the chair), but it makes sense in the show’s context. The redesign matches the mid-century sci-fi aesthetic, and letting the boys sit face-to-face with Curtain suggests a connecting experience--say, a therapy session--that fits with his life coach persona. Not sure how the absence of handcuffing is going to play with a certain scene toward the end, but we’ll see. The Whisperer comes across as Alexa going to the dark side an interested, empathetic, flattering listener, just as Curtain has portrayed himself. It’s quite disturbing.

Reynie reads Dickens! I checked his first scene to see if Bleak House is the “enjoyable” book he’s reading, but it was impossible to tell. It could be. It doesn’t seem likely that he’s had much time for leisure reading since leaving the orphanage.

“Thank you for that,” the Whisperer says as it pegs how best to manipulate you. The look on Curtain’s face as he knows he’s got Reynie is terrifying.

The implication that Constance has been there for hours stomping on that button foreshadows her role in the climax! And I liked that they included the iconic piggybacking the girls do through the books. There, it’s because Constance can’t physically keep up. Here, it’s to activate the entrance--clever way to make it a plot point.

Sticky’s strangely specific aptitude for Italian is beautiful.

Both boys show a reluctance to admit their actual worst fears. Reynie does so because he’s more suspicious of the Whisperer. But Sticky...probably isn’t used to being so emotionally honest. A fear of “not being understood” is safer, gives him a tragic misunderstood genius air that maybe he thinks will put him in a better light. Got to look good for the new mentor or he might not want you.

“Not being wanted. Not being wanted at all” is straight out of the book. The scene is told from Reynie’s POV, so he only hears what Sticky says aloud, not the Whisperer’s words, and the chapter cuts off right after the line. Cutting to Curtain’s reaction (an unwonted flash of sympathy and probably some realization that this is the kid who’s going to be particularly easy to use) adds a new layer of complexity to these characters, and I’m excited to see how this plays out. Giving Sticky and Curtain a connection mirrors Reynie’s connection with Benedict and heightens the danger with the threat of Sticky’s loyalty possibly becoming compromised. And it makes sense that Curtain might pick Sticky out as the one to prey on. Psychological/emotional abusers gravitate to people with low self-esteem and lots of insecurity--easier targets.

“I knew you had to be special in some way.” “Many, many ways!” Poor Constance.

The look of relief on Sticky’s face as he recites, “The missing aren’t missing, they’re only departed.” Someone rescue this child.

The meal Miss Perumal and Mr. Benedict share might be a parallel to the tableside salad in Curtain’s office. Benedict’s interactions with her are the opposite of manipulation, and despite his earnestness, she’s not taken in. He’s warm and emotional and ends up falling asleep in front of her (no attempt to hide it--and it’s good to see his narcolepsy come up again). The entire group is going out of their way to be sincerely kind to Miss Perumal, and she recognizes this, even though she distrusts them.

Curtain’s manipulation of Dr. Garrison (juxtaposed effectively with Mr. Benedict pleading with Miss Perumal to believe him) is, despite the topic at hand, an alarmingly realistic portrayal of how that works. The laughingly dismissive persona is just as creepy as if he were shouting.

(I still would like this Curtain to exclaim “Snakes and dogs!” at some point. And drink juice.)

Curtain’s turning his head as if to look for someone behind him and then asking her, “Who are you talking to?” and referring to her “invisible lawyer” is a mocking gesture, perhaps, or is it another diversion away from him zoning out in anger again for a moment?

“Sometimes it takes an outsider to let you see yourself.” A sign that Mr. Benedict is a good guy--he can humbly accept criticism and correct his actions.

Is Constance reading Sticky’s mind already, or is she just very perceptive about him?

Mrs. Perumal exists! Rescue her.

The haircut scene at the end bookends with the fitting. Curtain’s preoccupation with appearances is cemented.

We are not seeing nearly enough S.Q., but here’s further evidence that Curtain is a harshly critical father, disguising it as trying to get his son to avoid “conventional thinking.” This poor boy. We also learn that he’s not in on his father’s plot, which is the closest we’ve come to his cluelessness from the books. I hope we see more of this relationship in future episodes.

💙-Do they have any unique Valentine’s traditions?

A: doesn't care much for Valentine's Day in practice, but has developed a habit of writing a very heartfelt poem in the days leading up to V-Day and making a beautifully scribed and decorated copy of it on the day of. Depending on how their life has been going that particular year, the pretty copy either gets shredded and/or burned or carefully tucked away for preservation.

Ailbhe: doesn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day, but is amused by the funny things that Mundanes get up to in the spirit of the holiday. They don’t often venture into Mundane spaces, but Ailbhe does like to go people-watching in parks on Valentine’s Day.

Catherine: Does pulling out all the stops count? Whatever else can be said about Catherine, careless doesn’t apply. Always one for the dramatics, you can count on Catherine to have pearls and champagne at the ready.

Imric: Imric’s the type to show up at your door with two dozen red roses and tickets to a show you’ve been dying to see for weeks. He likes to go stargazing on Valentine’s Day, whether or not he’s seeing somebody at the time. Something about looking up at the night sky makes him feel so aware of how alive he is in such a vast universe, and that in turn heightens his sense of gratitude that he can share it with people he cares about.

Mina: Mina didn’t grow up celebrating Valentine’s Day, but she does like Qixi Festival, which is based on the story of two star-crossed lovers who are reunited once a year by birds that fly to form a bridge. She’ll usually spend Valentine’s Day working (and splurging the day after when all the excess sweets and caramels are slightly on sale).

Rosalind: plays a game where she’ll throw seeds over her shoulder and try to decipher a message in the shape of the thrown seeds. If she can convince you to take part too, she’ll stand behind you and catch the seeds in her hands - she says it’s a fun tingly feeling. 

Sam: Will make a dedicated effort to give a handmade, heartfelt gift. He’s always liked being out in nature and picked up whittling at a young age. He’s pretty good at it, though sometimes his creations are a little chonkier than their real-life inspirations (yes he has made many a borb). His younger siblings all have little carvings of their wolf forms, courtesy of Sam. 

💞-Have they ever been in love? If so, with who? Was it requited? How did it end? If not, is love something that is important to them? Do they want to fall in love?

Ailbhe: has not been in love before, and has a pretty warped view of love thanks to the constant pressure from their parents/environment. They see love as something that they aren’t allowed to have because it would put their impartiality in danger, so even though they dream deep down of one day being able to be “selfish” and love someone unconditionally, they’ve tried to train themselves into keeping that desire in check along with the rest of their emotions. (An Ailbhe-romancing route is very much slow-burn, there’s no fast-tracking your way around their wariness of emotional vulnerability lol)

Catherine: depends on how you define “in love”. Catherine themself isn’t too bothered by the details of labeling relationships or figuring out the fine details (which is both a blessing and a curse, ngl). They’ve had lovers before and cared about some of them very deeply, and others less so. She does think that love is something beautiful, but is a little cynical about how romanticized the idea of it is. Wouldn’t run away from love but isn’t exactly desperate for it either.

Imric: has had deep feelings for people before but never been in love. His most long-term relationship ended amicably after just over a year because they both agreed that their paths in life were drifting apart. Imric thinks love is fun and he does want to fall in love, enjoying every moment of flirting and the process of the fall as he goes.

Mina: has not been in love before. She greatly values love and equates it to the deepest kind of loyalty. As cynical as she is with regard to other things like, er, stabbings and general crime, Mina’s relative inexperience with romance means she has a little bit of a soft spot and wonder for falling in love. (This doesn’t mean she’ll swoon over a bouquet or anything, though. She’s still practical above almost all else....though if you get her a bouquet AND some nice journaling ink or a set of new nibs...kiss kiss fall in love lol)

Rosalind: has been in love before, with a fellow performer. It ended poorly, to say the least, and has left her desperate to renew her faith in love. (I know this is shorter than everyone else’s and I am very sorry to all the Rosalind fans, but anything more is Major Spoiler Material ahaha)
