#Make New moon all about Bella and Jacob's friendship
spots-lights · 1 year
Note
I honestly think opinions differ so greatly because the main three characters (Bella, Edward, Jacob) are vastly different between the books and the movies. To the point where they don't even feel like the same characters.
[Assuming in response to my cheeky "knowing other Twilight fans will beat you up for character opinions" post]
I agree so hard. I always say that I'm "Team Jacob" or that Jacob is my favorite character, but I always feel that I have to be so specific and add "Well, I like book Jacob, before SM killed his personality to make Edward the right choice." because otherwise people will come for my throat because Eclipse movie Jacob was an asshole.
The vibes and relationships are so so different book to movie. NM was honestly the most tragic. You got the sense that Jacob and Bella were buddies, kinda on level with all her other friends, but it was only natural that at some point she's have to return to Edward to be whole again. But the book. Oh my god the book. They were the BEST of friends, nearly inseparable. To me this wasn't a book about finding romance and supernatural, it was a book about healing with the love of your friends. I honestly forget that Bella going to Italy is part of New Moon BEACUSE her relationship with Edward feels so shoehorned in. Anyway.... All this to say that Jacob is my favorite character and Edward doesn't even make my top 10.

Do you think if, at the end of Eclipse, prior to the wedding happening, Jacob stayed true to his promise to not see Bella anymore, broke his friendship with her and went full ignore mode, would Bella still fall apart? Or would the wedding, honeymoon and baby debacle (assuming they move to Not-Forks to make sure the wolves dont learn about Renesmee) be enough to distract/push Bella into moving on from Jacob?
I am curious at what was the point of no return with Jacob where Bella made herself so dependent on him that should he leave or die she would fall apart and stay apart.
I mean, this kind of happened canonically.
Bella wasn't sure that Jacob was going to show at the wedding, when he did, she was elated and surprised, but it was him saying "this'll be the last time I see you" and Bella believing that. Bella before the wedding, knowing she was losing Jacob, was nowhere near the mess she was in New Moon when Edward had left her and was doing relatively quite well.
She was focused on the wedding, nervous about it, but excited, was excited for her honeymoon even when she watched Jacob be physically dragged out of the wedding after she told him "I'm going to be pistoned to death by a vampire! :D" and she really didn't think about Jacob much at all during the entire honeymoon bit until he shows up on the Cullen doorstep and sees Bella has entered the plot of Rosemary's Baby.
Bella of course then is very glad he's there, is thrilled he's protecting her and is her friend once more through this time, and after the initial shock of the imprinting and initial rage is quite happy to have Jacob permanently in her life because of it.
The thing was that Bella knew she had to pick between Edward and Jacob, she tried to get them to agree to neutrality where she could have both, but Jacob wouldn't have it so she chose Edward. That was the entire plot of Eclipse essentially, realizing she couldn't have both and realizing that to have Edward she had to let Jacob go and making that sacrifice despite knowing it would be losing her emotional anchor and best friend.
She was extremely upset about it, devastated in Eclipse, but she got over it and made her choice.

okay so about genuinely good writing (although I'm generally a stephenie meyer apologist about her writing so take this with a grain of salt) but I actually think the passage in eclipse where jacob is like, “if you had met me first and edward never moved to forks we would have fallen in love and made a life together” and bella is like, “yknow yeah you're probably right” and pictures the children she would have had with jacob. and idk I just always thought that was such a fascinating end to the love triangle. admitting that a life with jacob would have been effortless had she not met edward. (and low-key I wish there was some kind of fic where this did happen and then edward moved to forks when bella was in her forties because THAT would be a better love story than twilight just based on how creepy it would be)
SM has talked about this too; she has a bit in her Eclipse FAQ on her website that makes it pretty clear that Bella does not have just "love him like family" feelings for Jacob:
Bella does not fall in love with Jacob in Eclipse. Bella falls in love with Jacob in New Moon. I think it’s easy to understand why this fact doesn’t occur to her. Bella has only fallen in love one time, and it was a very sudden, dramatic, sweep-you-off-your-feet, change-your-world, magical, passionate, all-consuming thing (see: Twilight). Can you blame her for not recognizing a much more subtle kind of falling-in-love? Does this love devaluate her love for Edward? Not for me. For me, it makes that perfect true love stronger. Bella has another option. She has a really good one. An option that’s easier in many ways, that takes nothing—like her family, present or future—away from her. She would have love, and friendship, and family—an enviable human future. But she chooses Edward over all of this. This makes it real for me.
But then she goes and make Jacob her future son-in-law so like, IDK. Weird choice, there.
Anyway yes I agree that were was something really beautiful and bittersweet about the realization that she could have had a happy life with Jacob. I particularly remember, "I could see years passing, and meaning something as they passed, changing me," which is a stark contrast to the frozen existence of the vampires. . . and then she chose to also force Jacob not to age by having him imprinting on an immortal half-vampire and again I'm left scratching my head.
I still think Jacob/Bella got away from her in the middle books; that she found herself more interested in them, in him, than made sense if she wanted to stick to the E/B, Jacob/Renesmee ending and then had to scramble in her edit of Forever Dawn into Breaking Dawn to try and get that genie back in the bottle and it just . . . never quite worked IMO.

⭑ So, she ended up breaking it off with Edward. Or he never came back in New Moon. That was because, during the time that he was away, Bella made that friendship with Jacob, but she also met you.
⭑ Nothing romantic happened, actually. Not for a year. (Yeah I know, slow burn...)
⭑ Bella saw you as a friend, a neighbour. Someone that came over from time to time to hang out. You weren’t on her foremind for a while.
⭑ Not until she had a huge fight with Jacob -
⭑ Where her curiosity for the supernatural was too much for him, and he snapped at her
⭑ Bella was offended, and upset that her desire for this whole other world, was shut down
⭑ She came to you, and ranted about it (you grew up in Forks, so you knew all about the supernatural, and the wolves. You came from a long line of witches)
⭑ You consoled her. Because you completely understood - our curiosity is such a big factor in witchcraft. Without it, what would be the point of being a witch?
⭑ She went home that day, with a new perception of you
⭑ Someone who was more important in her life now
⭑ And from there, she hung out with you a LOT. There wasn’t more than a day where she wouldn’t see you
⭑ Bella became interested in witchcraft, and wanted to learn
⭑ And so, Bella became a witch
⭑ There are a lot of protection spells, especially around Charlie’s house.
⭑ There would still be the threat of Victoria, but the wolves along with your magic, would keep Bella safe.
⭑ Her favourite witch-book is the ‘5000 spells’ by Juika Illes
⭑ She actually loves astrology, and asks Charlie exactly when and where he was born
     “And the time too-”
“Why the time Bella?”
“I just need ... the time ...the exact time.”
⭑ Being with you means that Bella actually gets a normal life while being close to the supernatural. It’s a win-win
⭑ She wants to learn tarot reading, but feels as if she’s not too good at it
⭑ Oh but she LOVES having many jars of various herbs’ angelica, cloves, frankincense, dandelion, bay leaves etc
⭑ And there are so many plants - especially when you do move in together. There are plants EVERYWHERE; potted plants, but also outside there’s a flower, herb and vegetable garden. Bella learns that she has a green thumb.
⭑ Maybe you stay in Forks, or maybe you go travelling together? And you both wear protection amlets
⭑ Gifting her some crystals and she loves labradorite, mookaite and lepodolite
⭑ You introduce her to witchy movies; ‘The Craft,’ ‘Practical Magic,’ ‘
⭑ Any movies, media or literature with Vampires are a bit touchy with Bella. But overtime, she finds them humorous
⭑ She makes up with Jake, and it becomes a love triangle because he thinks Bella should be with him.
⭑ But you put Jake in his place.
⭑ Autumn/Fall is Bella’s favourite, because she’ll jump to put on Gilmore Girls or Practical Magic, light some candles and make some hot chocolate for the both of you
⭑ She loves spells about protection, better dreams(!) and healing:

Twilight Clown Takes—Part 3
Another video of a YouTuber throwing out words like “gaslighting” “abuse” and “toxic relationships” brings all the clowns to the yard, like ants towards the discarded milkshake…but I don’t think it’s better than yours. Hie ho, let’s go
Bella Just Wants To Be A Vampire!!!1!1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Except that this goes against all the canon evidence, including Bella’s own words (!!) in Eclipse that immortality would have no allure without Edward. Should we doubt her? I don’t think we should.
For one thing, in Book 1 Bella has one very good reason to become a vampire even without Edward and superpowered immortality: It is literally dangerous for her to stay human and be a part of Edward’s world, a temptation of any vampire. It’s that reason, as well as Edward, that is the most significant factor in Bella’s reasoning. The rest are just sweet perks.
Two Clown Worlds Meet
Tumblr media
R&J Clownery 🤝 Twilight Clownery
Anyhoo, apropos to nothing, here is a whole tag about how Romeo and Juliet is a romance, actually, and Twilight is patterned closely after their dynamics, so much so that Shakespeare could sue Meyer were he so inclined. And if anyone else calls them anything other than love stories, I’ll recommend them to an English major with actual reading comprehension skills.
Bella Has No Character/Is the Worst Character
Tumblr media
Clown OP varies the anti script admirably and almost succeeds. But this is definitely a psy-op.
Bella changes little from her core traits after meeting Edward. On the contrary, her selflessness is ratcheted up to 1000 re: her trying to save her mother, successfully saving Edward in Italy, worried constantly about Jacob. She also defends and keeps her truck until it conks out, refuses to let Alice dictate her wardrobe, punches Jacob when he forced a kiss on her, all while still being hilariously quirky in her metaphors (the kitchen magnets, “I am Switzerland”). If anything, Bella became more…Bella with Edward.
Tumblr media
I will give Clown OP one thing; there is an element of father figure in Bella’s dynamic with Edward. Bella as a mother to Jacob as her son, however, is stretching a lot. Maybe Werewolf!Jacob in Eclipse when Bella is worried for him and his pain? But her dynamic with pre-werewolf Jacob is pure typical teen shenanigans, nothing truly motherly.
Either way, Edward is more than a father, even an indulgent one, and Bella does not treat Jacob like her son. On the contrary, she misses human!Jacob and their pizza-and-bikes shed relationship in New Moon. Jacob brings out her immature side.
Platonic Friends
Tumblr media
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
(Why do these clowns always overlook the fact that Edward was just as suicidal as Bella when he thought she was gone? He literally cannot exist without her! He says that explicitly! Also, Bella would have been so bored of Jacob after a while. Even pre-werewolf, they don’t have much in common.)
College AU
Tumblr media
Yeah, no. While the coming-of-age element does muddy an otherwise straightforward romance plot line, there is power in merging the two. College is a very different dynamic than high school—as in, forming and maintaining friendships, much less romance, is much more difficult in college than high school. Romance in fiction (and in real life) needs regular forced proximity. That doesn’t happen if one person has evening classes, the other morning classes, one has work, etc.
Run, Bella, Run
Tumblr media
There is literally no point in any of books where Bella wants to run away from Edward. Even in the meadow scene with Edward pulling the spruce tree and throwing it, Bella actually feeling genuine fear, she doesn’t run. By Eclipse she is mostly all 😅 about Edward finding out she met Jacob and is confident enough to send him a threatening voice message after he makes Alice kidnap her. And then she finally learns that if she goes 🥺 at him, Edward would just fold like a house of cards.

I will never be over how doomed Bella swan was the moment that Edward took a liking to her. Edward being able to project his own image of Bella onto her and actively seeking her out despite knowing and acknowledging the risk in favor of his own desires. His natural vampire charm that lures humans in, something they can't resist, got Bella hooked. His vampire nature puts her in so many life threatening situations that in the extremely short time they're together Bella has gone through so much as a 17/18 year old kid. Edward even acknowledges it multiple times throughout the series, that he's to blame for the horrors Bella is facing, Yet he does little to actually stay way. Everyone in his life urged him to keep away from Bella for her safety as well as the safety of the cullens, but he didn't. Repeatedly Edward states Bella shouldn't be friends with him, that she should stay away, but he is actively seeking her out. Edward constantly follows her, breaks into her room, watches Bella sleep, and approaches her because he is obsessed with Bella.
New moon we can see these effects Edward has had on Bella clearly, she's going through hell without him due to how dependent he has made Bella due to his own obsessive behavior. Her whole life at that point was revolving around him, every single day together, every single class was spent together, the two have become so dependent on each other, neither can function apart. Then we see Bella healing, hanging out with Jacob and becoming herself again with the company of someone who is willing to help her through grieve. There isn't this underlying supernatural force driving these two together or a fascination of some kind. There's care and friendship as the foundation of their relationship. Jacob helps her become herself again, helps her laugh and gives her a place where she can be herself. Joking about their metaphorical ages let her be the younger one. She has always been the one taking care of the people around her, maturing quickly in order to do so. She was healing. But with the wounds Edward left on her still bleed. Hallucinating visions of him, seeking him out much like he used to. Bella needed to see him in any way she could because she was addicted to Edward. He branded her that even through the path of healing, he stumped her growth, leading her to jump off the cliff and his return.
I whole heartedly believe that if Edward did not return, stayed away like he promised, Bella would've been happy. She would've worked through the hallucinations of him, would've had the support from her friends and father to work through these issues, even gone through college. But he didn't.
He reintroduced himself into her life and reversed all the progress she made, risked her life again because of his actions, involved her with the volturi and essentially sentenced her to death. He started isolating her from her friends, started "protecting" her from the only people who truly had good intentions for her well-being. This obviously soured Jacob as well, making the sweet boy Bella knew into an aggressive person trying everything in his power to make her love him. They turned her into a prize, into something both were fighting over without considering what was truly best for Bella. Who was truly best for her.

Twilight Reread: Complete
So now that I’ve finished my twilight re-read as an adult, here is a quick run-down of how I stumbled onto Twilight, my thoughts back then, and thoughts now about the series.
How I got into the series back then: I wasn’t super interested when the craze of 2008 started. I was just starting high school and a lot of my friends were interested, but it didn’t really vibe with me - until the New Moon movie that is. Yes, it was Taylor Lautner’s abs that got me into Twilight as a teenager - the movies, anyway, and a friend recommended I read the books, so I borrowed her copies.
How I got back into the series: Twilight Renaissance memes, and the movies being on Netflix made me go “Nostaglia time!”, so I picked the books back up.
Twilight, my teenage POV: I don’t really remember too much of my thoughts here, besides that it was fine? I related to Bella, but otherwise I didn’t have strong feelings either way. I didn’t fall for Edward as many of my friends did while reading this one. Twilight, my adult POV: A decent book, a good story, I enjoyed following Bella’s character, and very much related to Charlie this time around, now that I’m closer to his age than Bella’s age lol. I could see more red flags this time around with Edward - and so I didn’t really want them to get together, but obviously I knew they were going to anyway, and I could see how she fell for him (I was a teenager once upon a time after all).
New Moon, my teenage POV: I remember teenage me quite liking this one, and I became solidly Team Jacob - for reasons beyond TL in the movies. I caught a big crush on Jacob while reading it as a teenager. I remember this one touching my soul more than the first, probably because the break-up depression felt very real to me. I was never in that bad a shape like Bella of course, but I had gone through major depression and a bad break-up, and so I related. I was annoyed when she took Edward back by the end, but didn’t have a problem with Alice or the other Cullens.
New Moon, my adult POV: I still like this one, partly due to nostalgia, and partly because it warms my heart. I remember being a depressed teenager, and seeing Bella get better over time and have a healthy, good relationship/friendship was nice to see. Again, relating to Charlie, I was basically following his mood the whole book, being Team Jacob because I thought they were good with each other, except that he only hates Edward. This time around, I started to actively hate all the Cullens - because their presence makes the wolves shift and they know it, because they’re capitalists, and they all ghosted Bella cruelly. I wanted them to stay gone. Loved the book overall, but saddened by the ending. I started to develop my Bella-is-under-thrall theory to explain her excessive depression and willingness to take Edward back so quickly. My favourite of this series this time around.
Eclipse, my teenage POV: This one was my favourite as a teenager. I overlooked a lot of the toxic relationships in the book - to the point I can’t remember how I felt about much of it, except that I remember liking the newborn army plot. Or maybe that’s more the movie I liked... it’s been a long time.  Eclipse, my adult POV: I like it, but definitely less than I used to, and definitely less than New Moon. The toxic relationships jump out at me so much more than they did when I was a teenager, and my hatred for the Cullens just grew and grew, and I kept rooting for Charlie and the wolves like in New Moon. I hated the 180 Jacob’s character took around halfway through the book, and how Bella was just... so blind by Edward’s obvious shit. I maintained my she-is-under-thrall headcanon because it let me explain her behaviour, with her panicking at the rapidly approaching graduation/date-to-vampirism being a sign that some part of the old Bella was still there (the one who had hobbies before the thrall made Edward her only thought most of the time) and wanted to break free. Charlie’s annoyance at Edward’s continued existence was such a mood. This time around the plot wasn’t really as captivating to me, maybe again, because my memory was very influenced by the movie that I saw more times than rereading. It ends very tragically to me, and I prefer to end the series there, and headcanon the rest to get a happy ending.
Breaking Dawn, my teenage POV: I didn’t like it. I didn’t like Bella ending up with Edward, or the pregnancy plot that I didn’t think made any sense. I didn’t like Jacob imprinting, or the baby’s name. I didn’t like the Volturi show-down. I just... I didn’t like it.
Breaking Dawn, my adult POV: I maintain my dislike of it. Stronger, now though. I hate Bella ending up with Edward instead of the thrall breaking. I loathe the pregnancy plot and the sexist explanation for why supernatural men can apparently impregnate but supernatural women can’t get pregnant (the whole Leah’s periods stopped and she thinks she’s infertile while all the wolf guys can totally have babies, and apparently so can Edward despite the sperm being frozen/dead and therefore shouldn’t even be ABLE to fertilize... shit makes me MAD). I hate that Jacob imprints on a baby, and is now basically a thrall to vampires and happy about it. I hate how Bella’s body literally breaks and she dies, and the vampire that wears her face is apparently a perfect being. I hate that there’s literally zero consequences because she gets a relationship with Charlie. I hate how sad Charlie is. I hate how the Volturi come by and then everyone just goes home and it’s apparently happily ever after, despite the fact that they obviously can’t stay in Forks forever, and if they bring Regurgitate with them, Jacob would have to leave with them - permanently separating him from his family, too! I hate that Jacob apparently only loved Bella because egg (bullshit. He fell in love with her before he was ever a werewolf). Honestly, I think the only things I like in this book is like... the wolves pre baby, and Charlie. I’m gonna ignore this one in the future cuz I hate it. Only one in the series I gave a failing grade to.
Twilight’s lasting impact on me: Well, it definitely sold me on Werewolf fiction. I was intrigued by Teen Wolf when it came on TV at least in part due to my liking the wolves of Twilight, and then I picked up Kelley Armstrong’s Bitten, which basically solidified werewolves as my favourite supernatural creature. I’ll pick up almost any media with a werewolf in it now, and I can directly trace all of that back to this series. It’s really in re-reading/re-watching the movies years later that I see just how it shaped what fiction I enjoy now.

Part 2/??? 😂 Jacob for the ask game!
(Will answer mine when I claw some brainpower back!! 💖)
do I like them
How could I not? One of Bella's best moments was when she called him her personal son. He's one of my favorite parts of this series and his character assassination at the hands of Meyer will always be a tragedy
5 good qualities
His heart- he has so much capacity for love and gives so much of himself to others
He's caring and thoughtful with his time and especially the gifts he gives to his friends and family
He's loyal, maybe to a fault
He's perceptive- its shown more in the books than the movies, but he's easily able to tell when Bella doesn't want to talk about something (or someone) and doesn't push her further
He's literally described by Bella as her personal sun
3 bad qualities
The whole Bella kiss scene before the newborn battle in Eclipse. Just not a fan all around
He's also the type of person who doesn't know when to stop talking. Like its nice, but you don't always need his 24/7 running commentary and it can be a bit much when he and Quil get going
He's not good at talking about or dealing with his own feelings and sometimes that comes back to bite him
favorite episode/etc
The entire sequence when they restore the bikes. Jake dives headlong into it and is so giving with his time and energy and definitely knows how good it all is for Bella
otp
I can't make a single choice, so you're getting several, that share equal value in my heart
Blackwater- for obvious reasons
Selfpartnered!Jake- This is mostly HC territory, but I really like the idea of him being single and working through his trauma, and learning to love and accept himself
Jake x Bella- This was my jam when I came back into twilight (aka The Movement of the Earth), and I was Team Jacob back when I first read the series. There’s also something so easy about their relationship like they’re two halves of a whole
brotp
I will always have a soft spot for Jake/Quil/Embry and their friendship. There's a ton of history between them, and a lot to work with, and their overall dynamic is quite fun
ot3
I don't think I have one?
notp
Jacob/Edward. I don't get it and I don't think I ever will
best quote
There is a lot to pick from, but I like this one from New Moon:
He sighed a heavy sigh. Then he reached over his toolbox to a paper grocery sack. He pulled out two cans of soda, cracking one open, and handing it to me. He opened the second and held it ceremoniously.
"Here's to responsibility," he toasted. "Twice a week."
"And recklessness every day in between," I emphasized.
He grinned and touched his can to mine
Not much, but I feel like it encapsulates some of his best parts
headcanon
He learned about cars from his Aunt Jane, Nana Doris, and Grandfather Hank (Sarah was the rebel artist in a family of mechanics), who own a garage in La Push. After Sarah's death, it became a bit of an obsession, but also a way to work through grief he had a difficult time processing.
The garage behind the house is his personal sanctuary, but Jacob has just as many fond memories of hours spent with his aunt and grandparents, old country music playing in the background as they taught him how to take apart cars and bikes and put them back together.

04: Twilight Breaking Dawn
Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final installment of Stephenie Meyer's hugely successful Twilight saga. With all of the excitement surrounding the release of Breaking Dawn, I doubt there is anyone on the planet who is unaware of the book's publication. Readers who haven't read any of the previous books in this saga, on the other hand, should avoid starting here because the story continues throughout the series.
Tumblr media
Breaking Dawn is the long-awaited and highly anticipated conclusion to Stephenie Meyer's captivating story of vampire Edward and human Bella's impossible romance. Beginnings can be difficult, but with its modern-day fairy tale quality and heart-stopping romance, Twilight got this series off to a fantastic start.
New Moon built on that with Bella and Edward's fragile painful separation and subsequent happy reunion. But the romantic tension that had been driving the story to the heady heights of compelling reading has been lacking since the end of New Moon. As a result, Eclipse was a different novel. It was clear that whatever happened in Eclipse would keep Edward and Bella together forever, and the stresses on their relationship came from outside forces rather than within the relationship itself.
Breaking Dawn is comparable. The romantic tension between Edward and Bella is non-existent. It is clear that whatever happens to them; may it be death, Jacob, mutant vampire baby, their love is unbreakable, and to some extent, this changes the feel of the story, erasing some of Twilight's romantic magic.
If beginnings are difficult, endings are even more so.
Tumblr media
Readers have no expectations at the start, but by the end, everyone appears to have an opinion on how they would have finished the book if they were writing it. Because Stephenie Meyer was writing the ending, the resulting story is good and, in my opinion, a fitting conclusion to this fantastic series.
Bella comes into her own in this novel, proving that she is capable of independent thought and action. While the Cullen vampires have always been kind to Bella, it was clear that she was no match for this talented bunch. But Bella's character develops strengths that make her just as unique and talented as the rest of her new family.
Breaking Dawn is a lengthy novel, but it does not feel that way. The plot is well-paced and balanced, with a good mix of exciting supernatural action, character development, and romance. Stephenie Meyer's writing has always been strong in its exploration of love in all of its forms, and Breaking Dawn allows her to examine the relationships between mother and child, father and daughter, husband and wife, and the bonds of friendship.
Breaking Dawn is a different novel, which may disappoint some readers, but not me. I don't want to keep buying the same story over and over with a different title and cover picture as I enjoy seeing the development of the characters as well as the author's writing. Breaking Dawn is more like Eclipse in that Edward and Bella are certain of their love for each other, but outside forces, this time the Volturi, may tear them apart as the story nears its thrilling conclusion.
The only minor complaint I have about this novel is that when it comes to wrapping up the story, every loose end has been neatly tied into a pretty bow, but sometimes it's good to leave something dangling in the breeze. Aside from that, this book is everything I hoped it would be. Breaking Dawn is a must-read for any Stephenie Meyer fan who enjoys the Forks series.

Note
Just shower thoughts... For a long time I've been confused about why Meyer wrote the Jacob/Renesmee imprint. Most of the weird shit that happens in Twilight I can justify as leaning into the monsterfucker/Phantom of the Opera angle or worldbuilding fails. But the baby soulmate thing?? But And Then There Were None kickstarted a wire in my head that transmigrated me into Stephenie Meyer's head during my shower.
I'm Meyer writing New Moon. I want to set the groundwork to break the love triangle in Edward's favor. I need Jacob out of the way, preferably dating someone else. But I don't want Jacob to seem like he loved Bella less, or like the kind of guy who would treat a woman like she's his second choice. Solution? I apply my weird concept of true love to the problem. Bang, imprinting. He loved Bella as much as he could but was destined for someone else! For now, Jacob is un-imprinted for now since I want the love triangle to be central to the Eclipse plot.
However, writing Eclipse I get stuck. Jacob is Bella's best friend. If he imprints on someone else, it means that he can't go with Bella on her immortal voyage of true love. She'll be sad. Unacceptable. Ok, I say. Jacob imprints on a vampire. Then he and Bella can stay friends, forever, as the new vampire (RenesmeeLite) will prove vampires can be good people.
BUT I still have a problem. What if some Jacob/Bella fans don't buy the new ship after all the drama in Eclipse? What if they (rightly) argue imprinting is thralldom and hate it? What if they (god forbid) make postcanon Jacob/Bella fanfic where the imprint breaks and the old ship re-sails? I need to make it clear that a) Edward/Bella are in unbreakable true love and b) Jacob/Bella's connection was sincere but ultimately platonic.
For a) marriage and sex are pretty big commitments. Escalate. The biggest commitment? A baby. Half-vampire baby can never die and thus never be forgotten. Renesmee will complete my Edward/Bella endgame. For b) ... I realize... I've written RenesmeeLite. Renesmee solves the Jacob/Bella friendship problem as now not only does Jacob have to like vampires, he has an excuse to join the Cullens and officially follow Bella around for the rest of her life! Also, Jacob's relationship with Bella is retconned to imply that his great love for her was only due to her similarity to his true soulmate/the call of fate. The Cullens and wolves complete the alliance arc begun in Eclipse, which they will no doubt use to someday take down the terrible Volturi and potentially become vampire royalty themselves. Ignoring the implications of that, it's a good day to be Bella. As for now, I edit Eclipse to add foreshadowing to Jacob's destiny... sorry Claire and Quil, you'll have to be sacrifices.
What do you think? Do you buy it?
And Then There Were None a Halloween Twilight special by myself and @therealvinelle that readers caught us out on while we were still anonymous.
It's a delightful theory the trouble is that's not really what we do here on this blog. This is a blog to divest ourselves of authorial intent or to try and peer into the mind of Meyer and ask "why?" For one thing, it keeps the blog consistent, for another I genuinely have no idea.
Meyer is utterly incomprehensible to me. Not only are we different people but... I mean, look at Edward. Look, there's your normal Phantom of the Opera bad boy tragic love interest type, and then there's Edward and the shit he says. And it's unironic, we're supposed to genuinely like him, she thinks he's a dream boat as he says, "I'll eat your babies."
How does one even comprehend such a person?
In this case though I'll go on a limb and say that given Meyer having doubled down on imprinting in the first place as well as Edward...
I think it was the plan to start with and perhaps even the reason imprinting in the series exists at all.
We see way too much foreshadowing in New Moon with imprinting immediately brought up with Sam and Emily, it is already a significant plot point and one Jacob finds himself concerned about when he realizes he doesn't imprint on Bella.
Already we had Chekov's Gun: Jacob hasn't imprinted which means that it will always be a loose end until he does. At some point in the series he will imprint and it will not be on Bella.
And given all that build up to Jacob wanting it to be Bella so badly, as well as the Claire/Quil subplot, and everyone else imprinting...
I think it was always going to be Renesmee. He was always doomed to be tied into the family and for Meyer this was always the ideal dream solution like where you're playing dolls and all the dolls marry all the other dolls and now they're a big happy family and everyone's related.
Adding to this, the love triangle was one of those hilarious love triangles where you know who the author's going to pick immediately. Twilight, Bella dates Edward. New Moon, Bella's very sad over Edward and considers Jacob for 0.02 seconds before dumping him because Edward's back. Eclipse, Jacob asks Bella to dump Edward and she says no the entire novel then marries Edward. Breaking Dawn, Bella marries Edward.
Jacob was never made a competitive option for Bella and it was always clear, the entire time, I'm sorry guys but it was hilariously clear she was going to pick Edward. Always.
Which meant that while Jacob needed a clean exit from the love triangle I... also don't think he was in the love triangle for Meyer. Sort of, yes, but I honestly think that's the weird set up that Jacob later quotes in canon of "Oh, Bella, I was totally into you because I was going to imprint on your vampire baby in the future. This makes so much sense."
... Does it Jacob? Does it?
I think Renesmee and Renesmee/Jacob was always the plan and everything else was just set up to get there.
(Worth noting, though I don't know too much about it, is Forever Dawn which was the book Meyer pitched after Twilight to her publishers which is essentially the plot of Breaking Dawn with a few tweaks.
It should be taken with a bit of a grain of salt as it was never published and I'm personally dubious of whatever copies people say they have floating about or what concepts were leaked, but nevertheless we seem to have a lot of the same stuff.
Bella still gets pregnant and marries Edward. Jacob still imprints on Renesmee. The Volturi still show up as the big bad. Victoria is still a major player (though this time takes on the role of Irina the nark).
This, of course, points to Renesmee/Jacob always being the endgame rather than the solution Meyer happened upon for the love triangle problem.)
But at the end of the day, I'm guessing too, and the best I can really do is shrug and say who knows with that one.

What are your favorite human moments with Bella's school friends?
In the movie-verse the best moment is probably when they’re all hanging out and being average teens while Bella is being chased by an evil vampire. That one scene, more than almost anything in the books, made it seem like maybe she DID understand what she was giving up by going all-in on vampirism after barely knowing this guy, and that maybe deep down there was a little regret for the life she couldn’t have now. I never really felt it in the books; the original books paint her as much more of a Not Like Other Teens who never really wanted any of that anyway and felt like she was Better Than That and an eternal life was just what the (vampire) doctor ordered. But I felt it in that movie, at least in that one scene. We as the audience were supposed to feel it, anyway, regardless of what Bella-the-character might have felt!
Otherwise the moment with Angela doing the graduation announcements is nice, although it reinforces Bella doing the bare-minimum to maintain friendships and other characters mostly existing to serve her love story. Sure, Angela has her own boyfriend, but they mostly talk about Bella’s Edward and Jacob problems. And again, I get it, main character. But you can make it a LITTLE less obvious that Angela’s only reason for existence is The Nice Human Friend. Wasn’t she only hanging out with Angela because she was annoyed at Edward?
And I like Mike Newton. There, I said it. I don’t think he’s a bad kid. Edward is reading all his Teenage Boy Thoughts and judging him harshly for them, but his actions are . . . mostly fine? Certainly nothing on the level of disabling Bella’s car or sneaking into her room to watch her sleep or forcibly kissing her. He should probably stop asking Bella out but it was, what, 2-3 times over a year a half? And he’s seventeen? And he’s still friends with her when she does turn him down? That doesn’t seem like death-penalty territory to me, Edward. And it’s clear his crush is meant to be a joke. There’s a potentially serious angle of “what Bella’s life could have been” but then in New Moon Jacob takes over that role and then Mike is just the butt of the joke and I don’t think he really deserves it. He has some learning and growing to do, but since he’s not frozen forever at 17/18, I like his chances.

Chapter 4
The next time she awoke she was back in sight of the blinding hospital lights. Her head was heavily pounding and the clothes on her body felt alien to her. Her eyes struggled to adjust to the white lights of the sanitized room, but they were suddenly off.
“Back again, Miss Uley?” She recognized the voice, Dr. Cullen. “I’ve already turned the lights off so don’t worry about that.”
Her eyes finally opened to reveal the smooth pale face of the doctor. A wave of calmness rushed over her as soon as her eyes connected with his golden ones.
“What can I say?” She chuckled. “I just couldn’t stay away.”
“Well, it seems you’ve been having a recurring headache, insomnia, memory lapses, and a lack of appetite. It looks like post-concussive syndrome. Your mom told us you were feeling like this for a few days, why didn’t you come back?” Carlisle questioned. He was trying his best to look like he was breathing but if he took even a single breath all his years of self-control would be over in an instant.
“I thought if I could just make it to at least seven days it could clear me from coming back to the hospital, at least as a patient.”
“What do you mean?” This comment had perked the interest of the man. Thoughts raced through his head faster than he could analyze them.
“I was thinking of applying for a medical assistant job here in the hospital. I recently got my degree in biology, and I’ve been thinking of going to medical school after.”
“That sounds like a plan, but let’s work on getting you better first.” It did sound like a good plan to Carlisle. He wanted to be as close as possible to her every single day, but it also meant he would have to work triple as hard to control his thirst. “We’d like to keep you for the next few days and make sure you’re in good health before you can go back to business as usual.”
“How long would a few days be?”
“About four to five days, just to make sure that the symptoms don’t worsen, and we can give you an all-clear.” It would also give him a few days to grow accustomed to her smell. “We can work over that application for medical assistant, make sure it’s something you want to do.”
“Yeah, that’d be great.” She smiled at the man in front of her, her heart fluttering with every breath she took. “Thank you, Dr. Cullen.”
“Please, call me Carlisle,” he smiled. “Now, why don’t you continue resting, and whatever you need just call. My office is right down the hall, I’ll be here in no time.”
The girl stared at the retreating form of his body and covered the heat that was rising to her face with her pillow. The butterflies in her stomach had made her uneasy and had her hands shaking. She didn’t understand why she was feeling this way. It had only been a week since her first encounter with the doctor, but those few seconds were enough to have her drooling over the man like a lovesick schoolgirl.
A few days had come and gone quickly. (Y/N) had grown attached to Carlisle, seeing and talking to him every day had felt like a dream. In his free time, she would go over to his office and pick a book to read, which they talked about the next day. They spent hours talking about nothing and everything.
It had been a long time since Carlisle had felt this way, centuries. Being around her had gotten easier each day that passed. Her smell becoming comforting instead of a trigger to the endless hunger for human blood – he’d never had a simple drop of it, but nothing could explain how much he wanted to have hers. Getting to know her had been a welcomed activity by the young doctor. He could spend days upon days listening to the sweet sound of her voice, admiring her curious-filled face when she started a new book – which she read swiftly, taking only a couple of hours to finish most of them.
“Can’t believe you have so many first editions, and you leave them at work.” She ran her hand across the spine of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. “I would keep them in a well-preserved chamber, and no one would be able to even breathe on them.”
Carlisle smiled as the girl gawked once again at his book collection. It wasn’t hard to acquire first edition novels when you were alive when they were published. “If you’re impressed by this collection, you’d be completely astonished by the one I have back home.”
“You have more?!” He nodded. The girl shined like a kid on Christmas, her eyes gleaming at the thought of a big library. “Oh, that sounds like a dream.”
“You’re more than welcome to come over any time. It’s always refreshing to meet a literature aficionado such as myself.”
“Really? That’d be amazing!” She grinned brightly. “I could spend all day reading, forget about work.”
The duo laughed. “Too late to withdraw the application but you’re always welcome to pass your downtime in my office.”
“Sounds like a plan,’’ she smiled. “Now, doctor, what will you ever do now that I’m not going to be here every day?”
“Oh, how will I ever go on?” He chuckled. “But if you ever need help during that time, just come by. My office is always open. And hopefully, you’ll visit from time to time on personal time.”
“I’m sure it’s something that can be arranged.”
If there was still blood rushing through his veins, the capillaries in his face would have widened. He felt like he now understood Edward; how being with her made him feel human again. And there was nothing more that he wanted than to take their friendship to another level, but he wasn’t sure if she would ever feel the same. Carlisle knew that she was unaware of the supernatural since (Y/N) had allowed him to be in her life. But what would happen once she knew everything? How could he ever come between her and her family?
“Miss Uley, your mother is here,” a nurse spoke up, peeking her head through the office door. “Discharge papers have already been filed.”
“Thank you, Nurse Dalen. She’ll be out in a moment.” Carlisle smiled.
“Well, the time has come.” (Y/N) took her phone out of her back pocket and handed it to the doctor. He looked at her with a question-ridden gaze. “I’m gonna need your phone number so we can arrange any future endeavors.”
“Right,” he laughed, typing his number into her directory. “I’ll be waiting for that call.”
“I’ll be making it soon enough,” she grinned. “I’m gonna go now. I’ll see you around, Cullen.”
“I’ll see you, Uley.”
She left the office with a huge smile on her face, holding her phone close to her chest. For the first time, she was experiencing something she had heard of most of her teenage years. Once she had met Carlisle all she wanted to do was get to know him better, spend her time with him, just being near him would suffice. It was the first time she was learning what falling for someone was, and even though it was scary, she was jumping in headfirst.
“Hi, honey. Ready to go home?” Allison hugged her daughter for the first time in five days. (Y/N) nodded, truly ready to finally sleep on her own bed.
“So, how are you liking Dr. Cullen?”
“MOM!” Allison laughed at her daughter’s reaction. It was easy to see that (Y/N) had taken a liking to Carlisle Cullen, and vice versa.
“What, darling? If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck.”
“It’s not like that, mom.”
“But you’d like it to be like that.”
“I’m not talking about that with my mother.” (Y/N) placed her cold hands on her cheeks, trying to cool down the warm blood that had rushed onto her cheeks. The cool air of the car’s A/C was only helping her so much.
“I just want you to be careful with that, honey. He’s older than you, technically has kids, and rumor has it he is married.”
A breath hitched in her throat. Married? She knew he had adopted five kids, most of them her age, but not that he was married. Had she read the situation wrong? He didn’t wear a ring, he didn’t mention any relationship, he had no pictures of a woman in his office. Then again, they had only spent five days together at the hospital. She didn’t know what he did when he went home at night, who he went home to at night. (Y/N) shouldn’t feel betrayed—they weren’t anything, and they weren’t on track to become anything.
“Don’t worry, mom. I’ve just been picking his brain about working in the hospital, and he’s been helping me with what I’m gonna be doing this summer.”
“Oh, have you decided what you want to do?”
“I’m gonna get my medical assistant certification. It’s a three-month course then I can work at the hospital.”
“That’s great, honey.” Allison smiled at her daughter from the driver’s side. “Is that where you’d see yourself making a career?”
“Not sure. I want to take this time to see if life in a hospital is truly where I’d like to work – see if medical school would be it for me.”
(Y/N) hadn’t taken the time to focus on her future. In her high school career, she spent her time focusing on the present and piling on as much as she could, and now she had no sense of direction. She would take every day as it came, hoping one day she would find her purpose.
Finally, back home, she hopped off the truck and stretched out her limbs, stiff from the days on a hospital bed. Taking a deep breath of fresh air and basking in the afternoon sun. The cold that had seeped into her bones from the hospital melted off, and she smiled feeling the warmth surround her.
“Why don’t you go upstairs, honey?” Allison told her daughter. “There’s a surprise waiting for you in your room.”
(Y/N) smiled and quickly made her way up the stairs to see what her mom meant. Opening the door, tears forming in her eyes. Her room had done a 180-degree turn. The walls had been painted a light beige color, and plants hung from the walls bringing warmth to the room. The bed was adorned with a white cover, and a fluffy duvet to keep her warm at night. A wooden frame sat atop the bed dressed in white linen and ivy vines. A bookcase lived in the corner of her room, filled to the brim with her collection of hardbacks and peppered with potted plants. Opposite the bed was a small desk with a dark green suede chair, her laptop set up in the workspace. Her room finally felt like hers.
“Do you like it, honey?”
“Mom, did you do this?”
“I wish I could take credit, but your brother and your friend Paul came over when I was at work and redecorated. I was actually surprised that they even came over.”
“I’ll have to thank them,” (Y/N) grinned. Even though their relationship was strained at the moment, and she had yet to see Paul since coming back, she was glad that they had taken time out of their days to do this for her. “I’ll go over to Sam’s house for a bit, maybe now he’ll have time to see me.”
“Why don’t you go tomorrow, honey? You should take it easy.”
“I feel a lot better, mom. You don’t have to worry too much.”
“I’m your mother, I’ll always worry. If you’re gonna go out, go see Jacob. He was really worried about you.”
“I will.”
(Y/N) kissed her mother’s cheek and grabbed her bag to head out. Her first stop was to the Black residence. Jacob saw her coming down the street and ran out to wrap her in a hug. When she collapsed last week, he had been very concerned when she collapsed in his garage. Jacob was glad that she had made a full recovery and was now back home, with minimum side effects showing. The visit was short, only a quick hello to ensure the boy that she was okay.
After spending some time with Jacob, she walked towards Sam’s house – she hoped to catch Paul there too since she had heard he now spent his time there alongside Jared Cameron. It hadn’t clicked in her head why Paul would ever hang out with her brother and Jared. Even when they were back in middle school, he never paid them any mind, having a separate friend group. She had only become his friend by spending time with him away from school, and her brother had always disliked them together, claiming he was a bad influence.
Outside of the small house, (Y/N) could hear the low chatter of manly voices, a higher-pitched one joining after. There was no mistaking that Sam was home. She started feeling nervous as she raised her hand to knock on the door. The shaky limb was able to make contact with the blue door twice before it opened wide open, revealing a shirtless Paul Lahote.
“(Y/N)?” He questioned. Paul knew she was back, but Sam had given him clear instructions to stay away from her due to their situation.
“Hey, Paul. Long time no see, huh?” The girl smiled at her friend that now towered over her. A few years ago, they were still of the same stature, but too much time had passed since then. She went in for a hug, and Paul cut it short – worried she might note his burning temperature. “Is Sam home?”
“Uh, yeah.” He scratched the back of his neck, turning towards the kitchen. “Sam! (Y/N)’s here.”
The older male appeared in front of them, a soft smile playing on his lips. “Hey, (Y/N). Good to see you’re doing better. What brings you around?”
“I just wanted to thank you both for what you did in my room. Mom told me you worked on it while we were away. It’s a dream.” Sam smiled at his younger sister and shared a hug with the smaller girl.
“I’m glad you liked it, (Y/N). We wanted to give you a place where you could rest better after the accident. It’s the least we could do.” The alpha could hear the duo that was left in the kitchen had grown curious about who was at the door. “Do you want to come in for a bit?”
“Are you really inviting me in?” (Y/N) was taken aback – the last thing she thought was that she would get that invitation.
“Yeah, there’s someone I want you to meet,” Sam responded, keeping his doubts of the encounter to himself.
(Y/N) walked through the threshold and instantly felt the warm aura that emanated from inside of the house. It was a welcoming environment that she had grown to love from her own mother’s house. She walked behind Sam, Paul following behind them. `There was nothing that could prepare her to the sight she was met with.
In front of her stood a beautiful woman. She had tan skin, long black hair, and a beautiful smile. But there was something that stood out to her, something she was sure stood out to everyone – three long gashes ran through the front of her face. Yet, they didn’t distract from the alluring atmosphere that surrounded her. Sam moved to her side, and (Y/N) quickly connected the dots and figured that was Emily Young. The Uley girl wanted to be indifferent to her presence, knowing how one of her friends had been hurt by the union in front of her, she couldn’t help but note the love that radiated from the pair. It had been a long time since she had seen her brother as happy as he looked as he stared at his fiancé.
“(Y/N), it’s an honor to finally meet you.” Emily stretched out her hand towards the girl, which (Y/N) gladly took. “Sam has told me so much about you.”
“I wish I could say the same,” (Y/N) joked. “Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to get to know each other more. I’d love to get to know the woman my brother is set to marry.”
“I’m sure we’ll have enough time now that you’re back.” Emily smiled and grabbed a basket filled with muffins, offering them to the girl. (Y/N) gladly took the baked good in her hand, picking at it and placing the piece in her mouth – a wonderful taste that quickly melted in her mouth. “You’re welcome over any time. Any family of Sam is family to me.”
“Thank you, Emily. I’ll be sure to take you up on that.”
Not much time passed before Sam had cut the meeting short, claiming there was something important the duo had to do. “We should do this another time, (Y/N). Paul and I have to go.”
“Go where?” (Y/N) questioned. “It’s already night, not much to do.”
“I can’t really tell you, sis. But it’s important.”
“So still guarding secrets?” Sam shrugged. “It’s fine, Sam. I’m growing used to it.”
“(Y/N)…”
“I can take a hint, Sam. I know when I’m not wanted,” (Y/N) smiled. “Thank you for the muffins, Emily. They were divine. I’ll be sure to take you up on that offer and visit sometime soon.”
“Of course, (Y/N). I’m sorry we had to cut this short.”
“It’s okay. I’ll see you guys.” (Y/N) took her bag and exited the house. She was confused on why Sam had welcomed her in only to have her leave soon after – there was something big he was hiding, and she needed to find out what it was.
“(Y/N), wait up!” Paul jogged up to her, turning her around. “Look, I hope you understand that we’re not trying to push you away on purpose. There are things that Sam is protecting you from.”
“Like what, Paul? What danger could possibly be surrounding us that he would stray from his family?”
“I’m sorry, but it’s not my place to tell you, (Y/N). As much as I hate keeping this from you, Sam would not allow it to come from anyone but himself.”
“Are you serious? What kind of power does he have over you?”
“PAUL!” Sam shouted, gaining the attention of his beta. “Let’s go.”
“I’m sorry, (Y/N). I hope one day you’ll forgive us.” Paul kissed her forehead and went to meet up with his alpha.
(Y/N) stood still as she watched their bodies disappear into the woods. She debated whether to follow them for a brief second, but she was exhausted. She left back home with a million questions running through her head. The pair of Sam and Paul was a strange view, and she was determined to get to the bottom of things.
When she got home, (Y/N) noticed her mother asleep on the couch, the tv in front of her still playing. The years that passed were clear on her face, the worry that she carried for both her children plastered in the lines of her face. She could see the exhaustion that she held, years of caring for two kids by herself taking a toll on her. (Y/N) grabbed a blanket and laid it on top of her mother’s body, making sure that she was warm during the night. She left a kiss on her cheek, thankful for everything her mother had sacrificed for her.
After showering the day off, (Y/N) changed into her pajamas and laid in bed staring at her phone’s screen. She thought if she stared at it long enough a message would magically pop up. Minutes passed and her phone kept silent, not a single notification appearing on the screen. She scrolled through her directory until it landed on the newest listing. Carlisle Cullen, it read. Her finger clicked on it and selected new message.
Her fingers danced atop the keyboard of her phone, no words coming to her mind to send to the doctor. Should she even send him a message? What if he truly was married? She would never want to come between a couple. But her fingers did not follow her thought train. Unconsciously, they started typing away a message and before she could analyze her actions, she sent the message.
Hi, Carlisle. It’s (Y/N). I made it home okay and don’t have any symptoms, seems like you fixed me up! Anyways, wanted to know if you possibly had some free time this weekend to join me for some dinner at La Bella Italia. Hope you had a good rest of the day at work!
Her jaw fell when her screen read message sent. There was no way to delete it now. It was out there, and it would make its way to his phone. (Y/N)’s head fell onto her pillow and muffled a scream that escaped from her throat. This feeling was alien to her, and she was learning what steps to take to grow closer to the astonishing man. Minutes felt like an eternity to (Y/N), thinking that she had imploded the friendship she had built with the man over the past week.
Beep.
The sound from her phone caught her attention. She scrambled for her phone and quietly shrieked at the words on her screen.
Hello, (Y/N). I’m glad you’re feeling better, hopefully, no symptoms will arise once more. And I did have a good day at work, although I missed our afternoon book chats. I have a free day on Sunday. Tell me a time and I can meet you in Port Angeles. Hope that day is good for you.
“He said yes. If he were actually married, he wouldn’t have said yes,” she thought.
So, she typed back.
I’m glad you had a good day, and the book chats have an easy fix. I’m just a phone call away. As for Sunday, it’s a perfect day. I think around 5:30 would be a good time for dinner. Let me know if it works.
Sent.
Seconds later, another beep.
I’ll make sure to schedule those calls then. 5:30 sounds perfect. I’ll see you there. Have a good night, (Y/N).
See you then, Carlisle. Good night. 😊
(Y/N) smiled at her phone, joy wanting to burst from her body. She was reveling in this new feeling and the happiness it brought her. If it was Carlisle, it was worth it, she believed.
That night she went to sleep with the biggest smile she had experienced in her life. Unbeknownst to the life-changing moments that were to follow this meeting.

Do you think it would have been better or worse for Bella if only Edward had left in New Moon?
I think worse, at least at first.
one thing I think the fandom tends to overlook is how full on creepy bella was about edward after getting dumped. her plan at the end of NM was to convince alice to change her into a vampire so she could relentlessly stalk him for eternity.
which tells me she's as willing to ignore his (and his family's!) boundaries as he is to ignore hers. I think if edward left but bella was still going to school with the other cullens, maybe even hanging out with them, things would pretty quickly devolve into "bella tries to convince remaining cullens to change her." and I think one reason edward didn't want that to happen is...it would have worked, eventually. like, the other cullens seem to respect bella's agency more than edward does, and if she made a solid case for why she should be a vampire ("victoria's still out there! I'll never be safe as long as I smell so much more appealing than normal humans! I know too much and the volturi would kill me and all of you if they ever found out!" etc etc) I think alice, jasper, emmett, and perhaps even carlisle would have come to agree with her. I can just imagine bella showing up to carlisle's work with a Why I Should Be a Vampire powerpoint and cornering him in a semi-public area if he refused to talk to her in private. she's just that frighteningly persistent when it comes to edward.
I also think if the other cullens had stayed, bella never would have become such good friends with jacob. instead of a depressed shell of herself, she would be feverishly obsessed with getting them to change her, and wouldn't be out here making time for new friendships. which would be suuuuper unhealthy (water is wet, lol.)
plus, the second edward found out (probably from alice) that victoria was back on the prowl, he'd be back. the whole scheme would fall apart pretty quickly.
but if, by some miracle, the other cullens persistently shut down any and all "vampire bella" talk, and refused to talk about edward either, and victoria didn't come back, then I could see bella maaaaaybe someday being ok. like, the whole thing would put alice in a really horrible position, but at least that's one person who knows the truth, someone bella could actually confide in. it would remove the weird, gaslight-y, "eliminate every trace that the cullens ever existed" element, too.

Some great Jacob x Bella fics to read, a mashup of all kinds -
Experiments by Aretee - Jake and Bella's easy and comfortable friendship has tripped its way into the physical when curiosity about how the body reacts to desire leads to a series of experiments-and Jake and Bells are the actual subjects. It will appear PWP for a while, but there is an actual story line in the works. Stephenie Meyer created the playground and we're just swingin' on the swings.
Frozen Dawn by EAnna23je - His arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me ever tighter against his all consuming heat. Our lips crashed together, his surprisingly yielding and rough all at once. And it was then I knew Jacob Black no longer remained my best friend. But was I prepared to face the golden dawn once the icy moon waned?

Team Edward vs Team Jacob? ( or Maybe it can be that deep)
Unless you’ve been totally removed from popular culture these past few years you have heard about Team Edward vs Team Jacob. It was everywhere for a while and it was one of the things that both drew people to twilight and drive people away. It also, while not inventing love triangles, added a huge amount to their popularity and prevalence in fiction (particularly YA). The other most famous love triangle in YA is of course from the Hunger Games.
However if you ask any self respecting Hunger Games fan about it, they will tell you it’s more than just that, that Peeta represents peace and rebuilding while Gale represents retribution and destruction (at their most simple) and Katniss choosing between them is in fact her choosing her future. This symbolic view of love triangles is rarely discussed Re. Twilight, and with good reason as it’s unlikely Smeyer intended one to be there. However I think, that twilight can be read in an equally allegorical way, so please take a trip with me to find out what’s beyond team Edward and team Jacob.
The very first question, is what do Edward and Jacob represent? The most obvious answer in life and death. Language describing Edward is full of metaphors describing him as cold, as drug like, as painful. Smeyer describes Bella feeling “withdrawal” when she is away from him. Jacob however is associated primarily with the sun and with warmth. There’s also the factor that physically Edward is dead, he has no heartbeat, doesn’t grow, doesn’t eat human food. Whereas Jake has a quick heart beat, grows more quickly that the average human, and needs to eat more human food. In this way Jacob seems to represent humanity at its most extreme, he is more human than Bella, Edward is less.
However this falls apart around eclipse, when Jacobs warmth becomes “burning” however it’s wildly accepted that Smeyer changed Jacobs characterisation drastically in Eclipse, even reverting back to his og characterisation in Breaking dawn. So If we take away that element then Edward and Jacob representing life and death makes sense. However Bella choosing death over life is wrong, right?
Well maybe not. At least not in Bellas mind. From the first line of the series we know Bella is borderline obsessed with death. She is distressingly self sacrificing, the first line of the entire series is her deciding to die “in the place of someone ( she) loves”. And throughout new moon Bella continues to be self destructive. It’s interesting that the famous cliff dive, is to get towards Edward in the form of a halluncination. And she is saved by Jacob. This scene shows at its most basic that Bella leaping towards Edward is her jumping to her death. And yet she chooses it. So it’s fair enough to say that Bella doesn’t particularly want to live.
Which is why Edward is the one she chooses. He offers the option for her to stop aging, to have to never make the difficult decisions that come with age. In many ways Bella choosing Edward is a symbolic death. But it’s also a very attractive prospect for a teenager anxious about aging, with a complex about responsibility. Which let’s face it lots of the people reading twilight were. Choosing Edward is easy because her is an end to all problems. Wheras while Jacob may offer solutions too through friendship and warmth. His path requires effort.
Which is why I think that Life and Death might be too reducative. When in reality they represent Stagnation and Recovery. Bella is put in a position where if she chooses Jacob she will have to work on herself. With him she is actively building the bikes, which are a fairly obvious metaphor. They were broken by someone else, but by putting time and effort in they can work again. Which is very much what is happening with Bella in New Moon, she feels broken but begins to put in work to put herself together.
Continuing the metaphor, in eclipse Edward presents Bella with his own motorbike. It’s fancy, fast, and ready to go. It doesn’t require work to be put in. And Bella sees it how the audience does. That it doesn’t meant the same as it doesn’t have the same love put into it. It isn’t the motorbike that matters but the time spent building it. And again and again Edward and Jacob are shown like this. Jacob gives Bella a wolf charm he spent time and love carving, but Edward gives Bella a diamond, that’s flashy but has no real meaning.
So she should have chosen Jake right? Well yes but it’s not that simple! Bella is clearly vulnerable and what she thinks she wants is what Edward is giving, something ready made, a perfect family, wealth, security, but she doesn’t see that they’re as empty as the bike Edward gives. She could have these things with Jake but she would have to work for them, would have to put effort into making his friends like her rather than have them be her “best friend” immediately. And putting work in is what makes things matter, as I established, but Bella doesn’t see this, she sees the security of the Cullens and is blinded by its flashy-ness. And Jacob can’t compete. Bella wants the end product immediately and he is a work in progress.
So what does this mean? If Bella chooses death and refuses to recover her ending is surely a tragedy? Well maybe! But it’s easier to understand once you look at it from the Mormon perspective it was written from. Because Edwards symbolic death isn’t a end. It is a beggining, and from then on its “paradise”. Bella choosing death is just a fast track to heaven. And hey, why bother trying to make your time on earth good when you know what comes next will be a thousand times better?
But if you remember that post that said “an immortal will never love as a human loves because love is about survival”? Yeah that’s the real Edward / Jacob divide. Eternity is impossible to comprehend, and maybe this is just me but even a “perfect forever” sounds like it would be unbearable. Jacobs version of a happy ending may be shorter and less complete but like the bike and the wolf charm it’s also more real. So it’s easy to understand why Bella, Smeyer, and many readers chose Edward, as a fantasy it’s unbeatable. But if I had to choose? Team Jacob forever!

BELLA AND JACOB'S BULLSHIT RELATIONSHIP.
Forgive me for anything, I spell wrong.
I don't consider myself to be a woke person. I usually give people the grace of being people, making mistakes, learning and growing from them.
However, since it's a few months from 2022, I do want to discuss how depressing Eurocentric, oppressive and painfully cliche Twiligut was. Specifically, Bella and Jacob's relationship.
I, for, one was never team Jacob. I was team Edward all day everyday. By the end of the second book of Breaking Dawn, Jacob was my new favorite character and I was a hard-core Blackwater shipper.
So, let's breakdown Bella and Jacob's relationship. It began as a toxic friendship in New Moon in which one friend, Jacob was hard-core simping for his friend Bella who was not simpibg for him. It's not an ideal friendship, but it is a part of growing up and learning about love, so no biggie.
Bella and Jacob's relationship becomes offensively oppressive and one sided in Book 3 of Breaking Dawn once Jacob imprints on Renesmee.
Bella was always a selfish character. She was selfish for wanting to have her cake and eat it to. She was selfish for wanting to keep Jacob around, because he was always there for her, while knowing that she was always going to choose Edward. If she was a good friend, she would have put her own feelings aside and cut Jacob off for good.
So, how does Stephanie Meyers write around this? She has Jacob imprint on Renesmee. She has Jacob imprint on the very type of dangerous creature that his pack was sworn to protect the Quilite people from.
And it's not as though Renesmee herself is dangerous, she is not. It's that both her existence and the Cullen's close proximity to La Push places these Native American tribes on the Rez in the way of constant danger.
However, according to Alice's vision in the 5th movie, Jacob is so blindly in love (pedophilia and grooming) with and enslaved to this hybrid infant that he, a Native American man, would allow his entire village, tribe, pack, and family to be destroyed to save one little white baby.
Now, do not get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with saving Caucasian people in ordinary circumstances. The issue was that Jacob was expected to give up everything ans betray everyone for the safety of one infant simply because his white female best friend asked him to, even though she would never give him the same consideration.
In Alice's vision, when Jacob's pack who so loyally followed him is being slaughtered, Leah cries out for help from her alpha after Seth is killed and Jacob who doesn't fight at all, keeps running with Renesmee in hand. He doesn't turn around to help Leah and protect the village from the Voltaire. He just leaves.
Meanwhile, all of his fellow pack members who are there and Sam's pack members are present and fighting truly to awe there families and ancestral homes.
In the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, Jacob was essentially reduced to the benevolent slave. His will power is completely removed so that he can be in service to the main character, and he, a POC, is reduced to nothing more than a large guard dog that comes when called. Even the Voltaire picked up on this and were astute in their observation.
The observation that the wolf pack was merely a tool that would gain nothing from fighting ans potentially loose everything. However, the wolf packs themselves were disposable for the sake of saving Renesmee.
So, who is to blame for this? Not Edward, not the Cullens, not Jacob, nor Sam, and not Renesmee.
The only people to blame for this are Stephanie Meyers for writing a story in which she boiled down an entire group of people's existence to nothing more than a utilitarian use.
And Bella Swan. Bella Swan may be a good wife to Edward, but she was always a shitty friend to Jacob. She was a bad friend to Jacob long before he even turned into a wolf. She weaponized his love for her time and time again to get her way at Jacob's expense. Then, she had the audacity to ask Jaocb to betray his entire family for her best interest.
Stephanie Meyer's essentially castrated and chained the most powerful wolf of the Quilite people by withholding and weaponizing sex. Though, she did it in a more censored way. This was not an uncommon way European settlers once colonized and enslaved. In the islands. Overseers used to choose the largest, most powerful slave who the other slaves respected and listened to the most. They would then tie him to a post and rape him violently in front of all of his people, in order to emasculat him and gain control of the whole group.
Now, you might say that Breaking Dawn is different, but let's play Breaking Dawn out a few years.
The Cullens move back to Alaska. Jacob can't be without Renesmee so he has no choice but to go with them. However, he can't stand the smell of the vampires, so instead of living inside the Cullens' Manor with dignity, he has to sleep outside like a dog or in some shed far off in the woods.
All, the while, he has no choice but to forfeit his own responsibilities of protecting his people, so that he can instead forever protect the Cullens, never being allowed to grow old and die.
