Steve Rogers was dying. Or, at least, the Captain America he'd been for the last seventy-seven years was dying. He knew that death would be coming to him soon, but he felt no fear of it. What could be worse than the life he'd led? Loki sat by his bedside, clutching Steve's weak and frail hand. His eyes were dry, and his voice choked as he spoke.

"I'm sorry I couldn't save you, my love." The words came out in a whisper.

Steve shook his head, "No, Loki, don't apologize. You did what you set out to do… You saved the world…"

Loki smiled sadly, "No, I can't take all the credit." Loki looked away, tears in his eyes.

"I don't want you to go..." Loki whispered, "If there is anything I can do..."

Loki looked back at him with sad eyes as Steve said, "You already have."

Bringing Steve's hand towards his lips, Loki kissed each of his fingers one by one. Eyes closed, Loki remembered the pain and anguish of death. He remembered Theo, he never got to say goodbye. And he thought about how much he wished he'd gone back before Theo died, even if only for a short while. His heart ached.

"I wish you had told me." Steve said softly, "About Theo."

Loki's breath hitched, he said nothing.

"I wish you told me about him. What he was like. Who he was to you." Steve finished, coughing.

Loki tried to speak, but couldn't find the words. He squeezed Steve's hand hard and nodded. "I'm sorry."

Loki watched Steve nod, tears filling his eyes. "No, Loki," Steve said, "Don't be sorry."

He coughed again, this time harder, writhing on the bed.

Loki put a hand on Steve's forehead, "Steve?"

"Yes, Loki."

"I love you." Loki said, "And I always will."

Steve didn't respond. It was too late. He lay still, unresponsive. Loki gently laid his hand over Steve's chest, there was no heartbeat.

Tears rushed down his cheeks as he covered his mouth with his hand. He couldn't stop sobbing, his body shaking uncontrollably. Loki turned away, unable to look any longer.

"I'm sorry." He whispered.

Then, he stood up and walked out of the room.
