Time, Maedhros thought, was strange.

It was not the first time he had contemplated such things. Indeed, he had first pondered them when he had hardly attained adulthood himself, in Aman. Little Makalaurë, his first brother, the little Elfling who had toddled at his heels, who had been a kind and gentle child with wide eyes, and who he-who-was-Maitimo had loved almost as his own son: Maedhros had turned around one day, in the light of the Trees, and found that child gone forever. In his place had been Lauro: an accomplished musician, well-known and popular from Tirion to Alqualondë, an incorrigible flirt, sharp-tongued but kind, a loving brother. It was no grief to welcome Lauro into his heart, to be sure: but the little child he had been was gone forever. Even the Halls of Mandos could not bring him back.

Ch. 4: Dagor Gwilarnor

The Battle of Flight and Flame

Word came to Himlad of a stray warg skulking in the western woods. Celegorm took only Huan, his constant companion, and went to hunt it down. The expected few weeks passed, and neither returned.

“No,” Oromë said softly, though his word alone did nothing.

.

A few months passed. Still, none worried much, for of the heirs of Finwë, only Aredhel was more likely than Celegorm to randomly fuck off into the woods for long stretches of time, reappearing just as randomly with a satisfied grin and a deer carcass slung over one shoulder.

A few years passed.

.

Oromë growled, the long, deep, warning growl of a wolfhound at bay.

“Has anyone heard from Celegorm?” passed as a message through the lords of the north. Caranthir sent out a search party. Maedhros sent out a search party. Quietly, raising no alarms, they roamed through forests and mountains and plains. They quested carefully through Nan Dungortheb, land of spiders and darkness. They combed every cursed inch of Nan Elmoth, for Idril had sent brief word to her parents of the fates of Aredhel, Maeglin and Eol.

“I actually must count myself impressed with this latest attempt. Ought I work with rats as well as wolves? I had no idea they could strip a living orc to bone so quickly and mercilessly.”

“I care not for your pet projects, Lieutenant. Make sure the brat is muzzled for good this time. If he will not speak to me, he will not speak to anything again in this world.”

“Yes, my lord.”

Oromë snarled, and stalked restlessly through his woods.

WHEW this just started with one six-character card and then went wild. I actually had never drawn a couple of these characters before, including Elemmírë and Anárion and Malbeth!

You can scroll through the original cards here with more info or click these links: one + two (trans) + three + four (aspec) + five + six + seven (ladies) + eight (dudes) + nine (enbies).

Some of these designs were entirely up to me and some of them were part of the character request, so if you find the same character on my blog they might look totally different! That was part of the fun of this challenge. :)

Silm AU with the Feanorian death order reversed

I apologize in advance, but:

Maglor regrets the Oath and kinslaying on the voyage over. He stays aboard the ships, meaning to stow away back, but falls asleep (it's been a long day) and wakes up on fire. His brothers and father become aware of the situation when they hear the screams. Maglor's cries become a permanent echo in that area, much like Morgoth's at Lammoth.

Maedhros does not have the clearest head in the ensuing battle. He gets separated from the others and is beaten into the dust by balrogs. His family isn't even able to retrieve a body.

Feanor is very shaken and very mad. He doesn't parlay with Morgoth, not even for the Silmarils. He and his remaining people spread out across Beleriand and establish fortresses.

Things are chilly at best when the Helcaraxe group arrives thirty years later. Feanor does not yield the crown. The two groups don't fight, because Morgoth's a bigger problem, but they're not working together. Partially because Fingon refuses to speak to the Feanorians after he hears what happened to Maedhros, and Finrod won't even be near them after what they did to Maglor.

Feanor is very careful with his remaining sons.

Time goes on, the Bragollach occurs on schedule, and so does the Silmaril quest, except that C&C aren't in Nargothrond because of the Finrod-hating-them thing, so Celegorm never meets Luthien. She doesn't get Huan, but still manages just fine.

We do still eventually get to the point of "Silmaril at Doriath" + "no Girdle" + "stubborn Dior" = Second Kinslaying. But this time Celegorm's not grudge-fueled and Curufin's not having to cover for Huan and watch his back, and... Amrod and Amras die instead.

Elwing escapes to the Havens. Elured and Elurin aren't left to die, but Feanor has no interest in keeping around Sindar reminders of his dead sons. He has them sent away. (They don't know where Elwing and the Silmaril are, so ransom isn't an option.)

Then they do learn where the Silmaril is, at Sirion. They attack. Caranthir dies.

Curufin has been doing increasingly badly since Celebrimbor forswore him right before Doriath. Celegorm decides the solution is to pick up Elwing's twin sons and get Curufin to help parent them.

Feanor isn't thrilled, but he can't say no when he sees how Curufin latches on.

Love grows after between them, as little might be thought.

War of Wrath happens. Feanor keeps his tattered family out of it, but contributes weapon designs via courier. The Host uses said designs, because even if he's problematic they need this stuff.

Afterward, the claiming and theft of the Silmarils proceeds. Curufin sends the twins to Celebrimbor to preempt another rejection.

He's hollow, disillusioned, attacking the camp. The guards don't have to work very hard to kill him.

Feanor and Celegorm escape. The Silmarils burn them. Celegorm starts laughing and laughing and can't stop, and backs away...right into a chasm of fire.

Feanor flings the Silmarils after him, hating the things he chased so long at the cost of his sons, and staggers to the shore as the sea encroaches.

No one knows what happens to him.

I like to think Celegorm left Huan with Maedhros while he recovered after Thangorodrim because having Huan around calmed Maedhros down and made him feel safer. Caranthir brought the pillows and the blanket is Fingon's. Helping Maedhros heal was a community effort that made them set their various grievances aside for the time being.

Counting lines of dialogue in the Silmarillion

A while ago (before I even got on tumblr), for reasons best known to myself procrastinating writing cover letters, I went through the entire published silm and counted up the number of lines of dialogue assigned to each character. Here are the results!

Notes on methodology: Quenta Silmarillion only; characters listed in order of first line of dialogue; dialogue that can be attributed to multiple characters because a whole group was talking/the speaker wasn't identified is omitted; so is dialogue spoken by unnamed characters. Also I may have miscounted slightly because I'm not going back to check this.

Some thoughts on this:

Thingol has a solid claim by at least one metric to being the main character of the Silmarillion! No doubt this would annoy literally everyone, including Thingol ("What do you mean it's called the Silmarillion?").

Anyone who features in one of the Great Tales gets a slightly disproportionate amount of dialogue, as expected for the more novelistic style of those chapters.

Lots of divine beings chattering in the early chapters, but they're obviously much quieter once the action moves to Beleriand.

Huan, despite famously speaking three times, only has one line of actual attributed dialogue (the others are reported speech).

Maglor, one of the most popular characters in the silm, is the literal last one to be given a speaking role and he only has four lines of dialogue (all of which are very good lines though. do not come after my boy).

Characters who notably don't get anything to say: Orodreth, Círdan, Tuor, Idril.

From behind them stepped out three elves, all of them looking worse for wear than her Beren, but their individual beauty remained undimmed despite their matted, tangled and bloodied hair. There is her kinsman Finrod, who beamed in recognition upon seeing her. A brown-haired and green-eyed Noldo behind Finrod looked at her in awe, but then offered a bow. Then, behind the two of them stood a very tall Noldo with fiery red hair the likes of which Luthien had never seen before. He was bloodied all over: his face, his chest, his hands and arms. But Luthien knew the blood was not his own, but that of a werewolf, or perhaps a vampire. This Noldo was scarred everywhere: shoulders, on his middle, by the sides of his hips. Luthien knew then that this must be Maedhros, eldest son of Feanor, whose fury against the Enemy and the enemy’s forces were sung by minstrels, even Daeron. All the elves were as naked as Beren, but they were unbothered by it.

“My lords,” Luthien briefly touched her right hand over her chest, then held it out to them in a gesture of greeting and friendship. “My heart sings that Huan and I reached this place before it was too late, and though I mourn those whom we can no longer help, I sing for them also, for they will suffer no more. I am glad you are alive with Beren, and that you have aided him. I am Luthien of Doriath.”

“Princess Luthien,” Finrod returned her greeting. “I would be embarrassed meeting you like this, but we make do.” He laughs. “This is Edrahil mine captain—” here he gestures toward the brown-haired and green-eyed Noldo. “And this is mine cousin, the former Lord of Himring, Lord Maedhros Feanorion.” Maedhros simply bowed at her, avoiding looking her in the eye.

-- There and Back Again || available on [AO3] Or, an AU take on the Quest for Silmaril, where Maedhros joins Finrod and Beren -- and against all odds (with the help of mutant sorcery that confounds even Gorthaur the Cruel), they manage to rescue one of the gems, and Finrod survives all the way until the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. High King Fingon, in turn, reigns well until the War of Wrath and possibly well into the Second Age.
