I have waited too long — Morwen.
The Myth.
This one was created as the last artwork of 2023.
More of a mythical/symbolic imagery than a realistic illustration.

I deeply love all of the little echoes between the Silmarillion and LOTR, but this is one of my faves:
Last of all Húrin stood alone. Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Húrin cried: ‘Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!’
-Húrin at the Battle of Unnumbered Tears (C. 20, the Silmarillion)
"Hail, Lord of the Mark," said Éomer. "The dark night has passed, and day has come again."
-Éomer at the Battle of Helm's Deep (C. 6, Two Towers)
Naturally, I adore the fact that Éomer is the echo of Húrin, almost definitely the single most badass human of the entire First Age (and arguably of the first two ages!). What an honor for our horse boy! The echoing quote could easily have gone instead to Aragorn or an elf, both of whom are descendants of traditions that go all the way back to those First Age events where Húrin did his thing. But instead, the line went to the heir of a newer, younger people—a people who are, in many ways, more representative of the future of Middle Earth than the old, historical communities that have been in decline or fading for some time. So I love that choice of pairing. Húrin and Éomer feels less expected but more fitting to me.
Of course, the outcomes for these two are starkly different. Húrin is facing a crushing defeat and is about to be subjected to the wrath and punishment of Morgoth himself, which leaves him permanently destroyed emotionally. Éomer has just come out of an unexpected victory and is headed for another, at the end of which he can rebuild a happy life and even come to carry the royal title of Éomer Éadig, the Blessed. But I think that's the point of the echo.
Húrin did all that was possible (and arguably more!) for a human to do in the circumstances he faced, and in the end it wasn't enough. He never gets to enjoy a new morning. But that doesn’t mean he was wrong. Day does come again. It comes for Éomer. Because if there is one thing Tolkien wants us to know, it’s that you never give in to despair. You keep going and you try again, because eventually someone will find that sunrise and live to enjoy its warmth and brightness.

Quick sketch of Melkor/Morgoth and Hurin, Morgoth took Húrin and set him in a chair on a high place of Thangorodrim until such a time as he would release him. And there Morgoth granted Húrin his own sight, that he might see and hear to the ends of the land of Beleriand, for Morgoth wished that Húrin would despair to see the evil tidings that would now befall Húrin's kin.
I'm still developing the illustration for the dark lord, it will definitely different from most internet references when he is depicted with heavy load of armor.

Is your elf friend fading or did they just forget about ✨ the sun ✨?
As grandiose as our elven friends can seem to be, it’s easy to forget that they are simply verbose, slightly stabby, house plants. As such their physical and mental well-being being is drastically dependant on how much time they exposed to any natural light source.
(One would think a being with such requirements would make it a priority to schedule regular times outside but I suppose Eru put us here for some reason)
So if you find your elven friend singing sadly in the corner of a dark room, he may not be buckling under the weight of eternity, he may just have forgotten how days work and that living forever doesn’t mean you can go without sleep. No, not even if you’re in the middle of making something important, it’ll still be there tomorrow
This PSA was brought to you by Hurin Thalion and for the sake of the Allfather Fingon, you’ve been sitting at you desk for almost a week now. Get outside, touch some grass! The world isn’t doomed, there is still good in it  worth fighting for and it’s literally two feet you your left on the other side of the tent flap. Gods preserve us, you scared the life out of me I thought you were dying

This is for couples who have an in-text interaction... Because I know there's others that we love but it's all in our heads like Eomer and Lothiriel. I'm also not including the Valar because that's just a whole different cup of tea
You can pick based on books or films or a bit of both. Whatever moves you but I would LOVE it if you put which in the tags

In the Nirnaeth Arnoediad chapter of the Silmarillion it says
...Turgon hewed his way to the side of his brother; and it is told that the meeting of Turgon with Húrin, who stood beside Fingon, was glad in the midst of battle.
and I can't help but imagine this

One thing I always feel very important about the whole Maeglin selling out Gondolin for life & freedom matter is...
Morgoth promised him lordship and Idril AFTER Maeglin already told him about Gondolin’s location and defense secrets.
Yeah obviously the promise of power and Idril might be what kept him in line and continue to cooperate with Morgoth after returning to Gondolin (can be interpreted in various ways from “the world is ending better take care of my own desire” to “the world is ending better preserve what I can still save”)
But the lordship and Idril were NOT what directly caused the initial betrayal.
Here comes my dumb headcanon:
Maeglin initially cracked not because of anything related to Idril and Tuor.
He cracked because of the torture & what Turgon did to Hurin.
When Hurin came to seek help nearly three decades after his imprisonment, Turgon assumed Hurin was released because he sold out the location of Gondolin for freedom. Turgon was overwhelmed by this assumption and let emotions run over his own judgement (again). He directly told the eagle “my heart is shut,” and refused to take Hurin in.
Of course Turgon changed his mind after calming down. But it took too long; the night fell and the eagles could not find Hurin again. From Hurin’s pov he was abandoned by his friend (or even a father figure), and thus was driven to complete despair, crying out in pain, accidentally letting Morgoth know the general location of Gondolin.
I think it is rather possible that Maeglin knew of this, at the moment or later.
Then when he got captured by Morgoth and put through tortures, he would realize he was essentially in the role of Hurin.
Turgon did love Maeglin. But Maeglin knew Turgon treasured Hurin too. The king treasured Hurin enough to make an exception and let the brothers leave the city to return home. Probably after Unnumbered Tears Turgon also built statues in Gondolin honoring Hurin. But when Hurin actually showed up at door and seeked help? Turgon immediately grew suspicious and assumed that Hurin betrayed the city.
And Morgoth could even tell Maeglin what really happened to Hurin. How Hurin endured torture for 28 years without betraying Gondolin, but was viewed as traitor and abandoned by the king of Gondolin anyway. How Turgon became the last straw that break Hurin into leaking the location. How ultimately it was thanks to Turgon’s closed heart that Maeglin got captured.
In a word, I think what caused Maeglin’s betrayal was him realizing that
Morgoth could torture him forever
No one from Gondolin would come to save him (And other realms had fallen so there was really no hope)
Even he suffered forever to keep the secrets, it was expected and not appreciated by Gondolin
Even if he found a way to escape back to Gondolin, he might still be rejected/executed by Turgon because no one was allowed to lead danger to Gondolin (according to “of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin”)
Morgoth already knew the general location, no matter he cope or not Gondolin would eventually be found. And then Turgon would believe it was him that betrayed Gondolin anyway.
So yeah.
--------------------
I just think Turgon rejecting Hurin should has more long term damages than letting Morgoth knew the general location of Gondolin (which was already very bad).
It was something that could send out all the wrong messages and greatly damage the morale. I always imagine the event was kept as a secret, and even most of the lords did not know about the matter.
I think Tuor absolutely was kept out of it and he never knew he was so close to meeting his uncle until after the Fall.
Idril probably knew it, and helped to keep the secret from Tuor, and felt guilty. And that was one of the crucial moments that made she further distrust Turgon’s judgement. (I want all the “my father did an evil thing and I am helping him to keep it as a secret” angst)
Maeglin... Actually fought the losing war along with Hurin and Huor and was there when they sacrificed themselves to help troop of Gondolin escape. IDK I think that’s another “silently pondering in horror” moment for him. And he kept thinking about it, and kept trying to not thinking about it, until Morgoth forced him to think.

I was rereading the Nirnaeth chapter last night, and it struck me how many brotherly vibes are present throughout.
How Gwindor goes completely savage after Gelmir is massacred and pursues Morgoth’s heralds all the way to the very stairs of Angband, and even ‘Morgoth trembled upon his deep throne’ as he heard Gwindor’s people banging on his doors.
How Turgon opens the leaguer of Gondolin after 356 years and risks everything he has built to aid Fingon. How even on the last day of the battle, when he probably knows that everything is lost, he ‘hewed his way to the side of his brother.’
How Maglor, the mightiest singer of the Noldor, slays Uldor the Accursed when he draws near the standard of Maedhros.
How Húrin and Huor decide to stand together until the very end, and neither of them leaves, even when ‘all the hosts of Angband swarmed against them, and they bridged the stream with their dead.’ How Húrin screams ‘Aurë entuluva!’ seventy times as he takes down enemies only feet away from where Huor lies dead with all the people of their house.
The fact that every pair of brothers loses one, other than Maglor, and even he would not be certain all his brothers live in the midst of that chaos. And that does not stop them but propels them further until they have given it all.
The battle begins with Gwindor and ends with Húrin. Those who have lost a brother. Those who will now be thralls in Angband, and even that will not be their final end.
Goosebumps. Every. Damn. Time.
