#Celebrimbor and his drama

Alright, so everyone and their mom has at least one grievance with The Rings of Power, so let me air mine.
Why the hell does Amazon think that Celebrimbor looks like this? Like a grumpy boring professor?
Tumblr media
How do they NOT KNOW that Celebrimbor, grandson of the infamous house of Fëanor, actually looks like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if Amazon knows none of this, they clearly don’t know that Celebrimbor's evil ride or die BFF looks like this:
Tumblr media
Well done, Amazon. You missed out on the chance to milk their tragedy-filled, horrific cat-and-mouse style bromance that ends in despair & literal torture.

Every single post-canon narrative decision I make hinges on if it means Elrond gets reunited with his family. And/or adopts new family. I'm not picky.

What if/ headcanon things
Been running around The Hobbit/LOTR tags for awhile so i'm still learning lore and things. Recently gotten hooked to The Silmarillion side and after thinking about Gondolin Erestor, random thoughts of Feanorian Erestor/ Erestor Caranthirion got me thinking so what ifs: 1) Fili and Kili actually met Maglor and saves him from fading/despair on one of their work trips.Until Erestor, on one of his trips to seek out Elrond's father, finally locates Maglor with their help. Watch the drama unfold later in the Hobbit when Glorfindel&Erestor returns to Imladris to find the vegan feast and the chief councillor's surprise to find the young dwarrow he met are princes. They catch up and talks about Maglor until Erestor notices something off. Like, dear Valar, Lindir, is the kitchen slow today in bringing out the food, why is it all just salads? Quietly with a raised brow in wonder to dear Lord Elrond? They helped your Atya, why are we not being a better host? The rest of the company are now looking at Fili and Kili for answers, with the Great Stare from their uncle. Whereas Bilbo and Gandalf are on the side watching the drama. Glorfindel gets emotional seeing the swords from Gondolin, especially his dear friend's and King's.And the dwarrows are intrigue with the balrog slayer and his mate casually giving pleasantries in Kuzdul though with an old accent. will this change the hobbit's plot? maybe idk
small ficlet for this AU here
2) Elrond sails and upon arrival on the Western shores (after elf-napping his foster father) He is reunited with his parents & Celebrian and spots Maedhros and his brothers and Celebrimbor beyond the docks. Before he can even reach out to his other father, Carathir swoops in and is brokenly asking where is his "lil owlet". Elrond is confused until Maedhros wrangles his emotional brother and clarifies to the stunned group that he meant Erestor. "Oh?Erestor? He is staying for his belated honeymoon. He just bonded and-""WITH WHO??!THE TAPESTRY DIDN'T SHOW THAT!?" "Was a lil impromptu really. But they couldn't wait and Glorfindel-"LAUREFINDIL??" Caranthir and the rest of the Feanorians turn to Glorfindel's side of the family and both side stares.Until Carathir storms off to confirm the tapestries again.
Into the Fourth Age, when the couple finally arrives: Carathir: How could you get married without a family's blessing?! Erestor: Like I could?! Besides I had my cousin!*gestures to Elrond* and my uncle!*gestures to Maglor sneaking away* Carathir: WTF Erestor: Besides, YOU didn't marry with your family's blessing! everyone else:...
Ambarussa: he has a point brother
Carathir: *losing his mind*Laurefindil is too old for you!
Erestor: YOU were too old for amil!
Celegorm: oof
Carathir: *seething and struggling* I can't argue with that why can't I argue with that?? Maedhros: hello Laurefindil, welcome to the family. Glorfindel:...
Ecthelion and Egalmoth meanwhile are laughing their asses off. Elrond and his sons as well.

A non-exhaustive list of Finwëans I simply do not find interesting:
The man himself, the OG, the very much not-legend, Finwë. Like thanks for failing through life, emotionally fucking up every single person you remotely interacted with, and then dying to catalyse the plot. What was even the point.
Findis. Ok this one upsets me because I’m sure she COULD be interesting but like… what does she do? How is she involved?? You might say “oh she’s smart and doesn’t participate in the toxic family drama” but?? I’m reading the book because I’m invested in the toxic family drama?? The sane and normal one is not going to interest me??
Amras. Why are you here? Your twin was literally burned to death and somehow you aren’t even in the RUNNING for Saddest Fëanorian. Smh do better. (In a non-crispy Amrod canon, all this is doubly so and Amrod also becomes uninteresting.)
Angrod. Again, who even is this guy. Caranthir yelled at him once for visiting Thingol, which was a stupid reason. He should have yelled at him for having no plot relevance and not even the excuse of an interesting and tragic romance.
Orodreth. Oooh he annoys me because I don’t know who his father is. Also despite his non-negligible role in two of the Great Tales, he just… doesn’t intrigue me at all. I don’t know what his deal is and I Don’t Care.
Gil-galad. The parentage debate is funny but I am simply not invested in him as a person. He just strikes me as the Voice of Authority in the background of all the Second Age drama where Elrond, Celebrimbor and Galadriel are far more interesting players.
Ok now come out of the woodworks and defend your blorbos!!

As much as I’ve enjoyed all the confusion and outrage over Sauron’s identity from all sides, like I’ve said here, I think it’s time I throw my hat into the Sauron guessing ring!
Because we all need as much of the fun kind of speculation we can get.
Anyway I don’t think Sauron is any of the characters we’ve seen so far. In fact, I don’t think we’ll see Sauron on screen until season 2! If we’re lucky, we’ll see/hear him at the very end of the season finale as a kind of hook, but right now we will not know for certain he’s here.
Based on the info we get from episode 2, which I will elaborate on below, I suspect that Sauron is already in Eregion and already amongst the jewelsmiths.
Tumblr media
Who would tell you this? Which thrall??
This is not found in any recorded document (or Doylishly, not in any of Tolkien’s writings). Maybe dear old Uncle Maedhros told you this tale.
But that's not it, isn't it? A certain Lord of Gifts has been whispering in your ear, hasn't he?
Tumblr media
Why spring? When 20 or even 30 years is nothing to the elves and you certainly do not have the manpower for such an ambitious building project on such short notice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And damningly, why is this proposed forge in the shape of Sauron’s sigil?!
Spoilers for future events under the cut:
Sauron already being in Eregion but going unnoticed by the people who canonically don’t trust him (Elrond, Gil-galad, Galadriel), because it’s Celebrimbor who is approaching people for this project and making them think it's his own idea, would be delicious drama because it would hurt everyone involved.
Celebrimbor - For… obvious banner related reasons.
Elrond - For aiding evil in the course of duty and letting his admiration and trust blind him. For bringing doom unto the dwarves in the form of 7 rings.
Gil-galad - Because he has unwittingly aided that which has come to destroy his kingdom. Suspicious and politically astute Gil-galad who is already aware that trouble is on the horizon and is doing his best to keep it at bay without alarming his subjects. Except by helping Celebrimbor whom he trusts for counsel, Gil-galad has doomed his kingdom by trusting bad advice. And this would be particularly terrible for a Gil-galad, son of Orodreth, who is most well-known for dooming his kingdom of Nargothrond (founded by Finrod from the prologue) by believing in terrible advice. All Gil-galad’s nightmares are coming true all at once.
Galadriel - Because from episode 1 we see her hunting Sauron across the far corners of Middle-earth. She’s spent so long away from home and has pushed herself and her followers to their limits, alienating everyone around her in the process, because she knows he’s out there. But all this hard work was for nothing, because the call is coming from inside the house and she wasn’t there to stop him.
Everything they are doing, all the missions and goals they have set for themselves? All of this will come to nothing. The road to hell will be paved with their good intentions.
Because… well… They’re Noldor.
Tears unnumbered ye shall shed; and the Valar will fence Valinor against you, and shut you out, so that not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains. On the House of Fëanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from the West unto the uttermost East, and upon all that will follow them it shall be laid also. Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue. To evil end shall all things turn that they begin well; and by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason, shall this come to pass. The Dispossessed shall they be for ever.
Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death’s shadow. For though Eru appointed to you to die not in Eä, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you. And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after. The Valar have spoken.

On the Fëanorian accent
There is a great deal of fandom content on the subject of people like Elrond being said to have a “Fëanorian accent” which is based solely on use of the Thúlè. This is a bit ridiculous, as that is the deliberate pronunciation of a single letter, and therefore hardly an accent.
However, I do think that the Fëanorians probably did have their own accent, one that had nothing to do with the Thúlè and everything to do with the fact that they spent thousands of years exploring Valinor with only each other for company, and hundreds more years in Beleriand more or less shunned from other elven peoples. That’s literally how accents form, people.
the list of people who spoke with a Fëanorian accent is as follows:
• Fëanor
• his sons
• (nerdanel?)
• celebrimbor
• the people who followed Fëanor the closest in the flight of the Noldor
• the people of Himring
• Elrond and Elros
• Aradhel. It was a quirk that her many fans easily accepted while in Valinor; in Vinyamar and Gondolin, people diplomatically pretended not to notice
• because of that, Maeglin had a Fëanorian accent when speaking Quenya when he first arrived at Gondolin, but he quickly picked up on how it made people uncomfortable and learned to speak in a Gondolinian accent so as not to associate himself with their bad memories.
• Fingon is an interesting case. He speaks with the most classically mainstream Noldorin accent imaginable. It’s more perfect and precise than even that of Finwë or Fingolfin. His accent is the one actors study when they want to play a Noldo; you know the type. But when he spends too much time around Maedhros, their accents sort of meld into a weird mainstream/Fëanorian hybrid. No one else experience this. Whenever they returned home after time spent together, there’s a lot of drama, especially in the Fëanorian household. Fëanor freaks out every. Single. Time. “WHY DOST THOU SPEAK IN THE SUBPAR MANNER OF HE WHO IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT MY BROTHER?! HAVE I RAISED YOU TO SULLY THYSELF IN SPEECH?! WHY DOTH MY FIRSTBORN REJECT HIS FAMILY SO?!” And then poor Maedhros is like, “Sheesh, Atya, I just spent some time with my dear friend and cousin. I’m not abandoning our family!” The accent wears off a few weeks later anyway. Every time. When the Ambarussa were innocent little elf-lings, they used to tease Maedhros about it, mocking him in an awfully exaggerated Nolofinwëan accent. He would generally slap them upside the head for it, but he took it in good fun. But after a while Fëanor got more obsessive and the twins got older and wiser, and they stopped. Soon after it became a moot point anyway, as the lies of Melkor had started sowing discord and Maedhros stopped spending time with Fingon. Later, in Beleriand, they never resumed teasing him even after Fëanor died and Maedhros and Fingon reconnected, because after Maedhros’s time in Thangoridrim, no one, not even his brothers, dared tease him about anything to his face, partly out of pity and partly because he was now terrifying. But he and Fingon still had that weird hybrid accent every time they spent time together, which is why Thorondor’s first exposure to Quenya was with an accent that only two people in the world had only some of the time. Much like with Aradhel, the people of Gondolin diplomatically overlook the faint Fëanorian accent the King of Eagles occasionally speaks with.
whoever wants to add, feel free!

End of Year Fic Recs!
Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).
Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.
Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies).
Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.
I wasn't tagged by anyone, but I can't resist the chance to share some faves:
Multi-Chapter Fics/Series
Reconcillation – by @transmairon –  T, Sauron/Celebrimbor, ongoing – Fourth Age Sauron facing the consequences of his actions and trying to reintergrate himself with the world. I cannot wait to see Celebrimbor’s reaction to meeting him again.
From Mother to Daughter – by Galenfea – Gen, 5k – The fiber arts passed down through the generations. This is the kind of topic I love; a peek into the everyday lives of elves.  I loved the world-building!
companions in shipwreck – by spellworth – T, multiple, ongoing – An exploration of canon of female characters. I love this one, wonderful writing and creatvity – especially when writing about characters where canon gives them a name at most.
Haunted, Hunted  - by @imakemywings – T, Elwing & Maedhros, 9.3k - Elwing goes for a walk in the woods… This one is so cool, I loved the fairytale elements and Elwing’s horror was palpable!
dye me, nocturne – by @solmarillion – T, Daeron/Maglor, 12k – Darron finds a stranger on the shore and they get talking. I love how messy Maglor is here, trying to get what he wants out of Daeron, and how raw this fic was in the grief and bitterness in these two exiles at the end of the First Age.
Single Chapter Fics/Oneshots
elvenkings – by @meadowlarkx– Gen, 1.5k – A look through history at Menegroth’s fall. This one had me sobbing, it’s so beautiful and full of tragedy.
Bow and Helm and Hand –  by @jouissants – E, Beleg/Mablung/Túrin, 3.5k – Mablung joins Beleg and Túrin on the marches. Very sexy and filled with wonderful characterisation and delicious hints of angst and foreboding.
Echo of the Music – by @starspray– Gen, Thingol/Melian, 471 – A sweet look at Melian and Thingol’s relationship to each other, to art and to music (and the Music)
"…on a place of insecurity." – by @carlandrea – Gen, Thingol/Melian – This is one of my favourite Thingol/Melian fics, it’s so tender and Melian’s foreboding makes me so emotional.
At the Moment of Parting – by @daegred-winsterhand – T, Beleg/Túrin, 1.5k – Sweet and sad, Turin’s grief is so thick and real.
Pre 2023 Fics
The Gleaming Road – by melblue – E, Éomer/Faramir, 28k – Misunderstanding is a favourite trope of mine and it adds to the Drama here, with poor Eomer not knowing what Faramir is expecting from him. I don’t read a lot of LOTR era fics at the moment but this one is an old fave!
The Marchwardens – by roseofthebrightsea – Gen, Beleg, Mablung, Haldir etc, 6k – I love fics that are snippets of characters lives and this has some wonderful writing and sharp characterisation in short words.
A Challenge  – by @polutrope – M, Daeron/Maglor, 1.4k – The fic that got me into Daemags! Such a fun and entertaining fic!
Unkinged – by @arofili – E, Finwë/Miriel/Indis, 1k – Looove this, a beautiful moment between the three of them in a happier time.
The Gold Are Venomous – by @aipilosse – E, Sauron/Celebrimbor, 3.1k – I love Fourth Age silvergifting and I love mischievious Annatar is here, still up to no good after all this time… though Celebrimbor isn’t complaining (much) 😉Sexy and amusing.
My Fics
I risk my life to make my name – E, Galadriel/Melian, 10k – Gawain and the Green Knight AU. This was my first attempt at something multi-chaptered and I really like it still; it was fun to write and I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Starlight – M, Mablung, 944 – Mablung falls in Menegroth. This is was fun because I love angst and I liked playing with the structure with flashbacks.
Feast – Gen, Idril & Turgon, 1k – Idril reflects on her time on the Ice and how her father looked out for her. I love thinking about Idril & Turgon.
Reunion – Gen, Andróg & Andvir, 858 – Andvir finds his father in the wilds. I am never not thinking about the Gaurwaith.
Jealous Kiss –  Gen, Celebrimbor/Sauron, 370 – Annatar teases Tyelpe. I love it when Annatar causes problems on purpose.

Hiii would you be able to do hcs for Elrond on his wedding day? I just went to a wedding tonight and I’m feeling very 💓 at the thought of him just being so happy and in love while preparing to spend the rest of his life with his s/o skdjsksk thanks so much!!
I'm so glad you had a good time at that wedding anon, I loveee weddings!!!! Here's my take on your request!
Elrond Wedding HCs
Tumblr media
A wedding is a big deal for Elrond. To have found someone he wishes to spend his life with, who accepts and cares for him to such depth that they are willing to bind their soul to his, is something he’s longed for since he was a child.
He loves love and loves the idea of having someone by his side forever. He’s been left so many times and the fact that you’ve stayed, despite all the obstacles, no matter what happened, he’s just so grateful.
Of course, you’re grateful, too. Elrond is a wonderful partner who cares so deeply for you, and when he asked you to marry him, it was such an easy choice. You loved him with your whole being, and knew he felt the same.
You honestly don’t do much of the planning, Elrond is so on top of it. Of course, he’s always asking for your opinion, but he gets so “in the zone” that you really only have to focus on what you want to wear. This at first was a little odd to you, but you were so busy with your own work that you didn’t mind. If Elrond wanted to do it, then you were going to let him.
He just wants everything to be perfect for you, and honestly wears himself a bit thin. So, you end up having to pull him aside and remind him that you are more than capable of helping—that you would love to help, and that you want him to be able to enjoy the wedding as well.
He finally relents and you both spend time together planning, looking at flowers, tasting cakes, and just generally enjoying each other’s company. It’s these little things that made him fall in love with you, and it’s his dedication to your happiness that made it so easy for you to say yes to him.
Celebrimbor definitely made y’all’s rings, and he helped Elrond figure out what he’s going to wear. It’s an adorable sight to see your future husband so dazzled over (one of) his hero(es) so invested in your wedding. Elrond is taken so aback by how much the other people in his life want to be involved.
Speaking of outfits, dress, pantsuit, robe, whatever you wear, Elrond is going to cry. He already thinks you look absolutely beautiful even when you’re a complete mess, so seeing you all dressed up, walking towards him with such a radiant smile on your face? He can’t wipe the tears away fast enough. You end up having to do it for him, which makes him fall even deeper in love with you.
He's just so happy to have you, he could get married in the ruins of Mordor and still be the most joyful being in Middle Earth. And obviously that didn’t happen, you got married in Lindon in a beautiful ceremony that Gil-galad officiated, surrounded by your friends and family. It was a whirlwind and of course some drama occurred, but as long as you’re there holding his hand, Elrond is content.

After the juicy "Celebrimbor not talking to any of his family" take, you've hit us with another equally juicy (but probably controversial lol) take of Russingon which is something I've been riding for a while now, @spiritofwhitefire spoke nothing but facts. Still, on a serious note (no offense, I really love that ship so much) the constant characterization of Fingon as blindy forgiving, and always siding with Maedhros (or like being desperate to be with him) was probably what made me sour a bit on Russingon. Fingon has other personalities and motivations besides being Maedhros' love interest or being his hype man but seriously, he's Fingolfin's son, and seeing how close and loyal Fingon was to Fingolfin, I am sure, he would be genuinely pissed at Maedhros. I can't imagine him instantly forgiving Mae or something, and even if he did, does his forgiveness mean something to Mae because, at the end of the day, Maedhros is still doggedly loyal to Feanor. Anyway, this is just me being fixated on your tags, "not wanting maedhros to die a miserable death at morgoth's hands doesn't necessarily equate to total instant and complete forgiveness, "honestly a huge fan of their friendship never fully recovering..." please tell me more. I love your headcanons.
I don't mean to be in opposition to so many popular fandom takes 😅I'm usually not this bad about that...
Sure, maybe Fingon is a saint who harbors no resentment...but I'm not particularly interested in that take. #1, Fingon is presumably made a kinslayer in Alqualonde for the sake of the Feanorians, whom he believed were under unjust assault, but who were, in fact, the aggressors. #2, Although Maedhros does not partake in the burning of the ships at Losgar (something it's implied Fingon learns eventually), neither did he make any effort to stop it, and that decision of the Feanorians' helped condemn the rest of the Noldor host to the Helcaraxe, where, among other things, Fingon's sister-in-law dies. I would say he certainly has grounds to be angry with Maedhros and furthermore, to distrust him going forward.
Not to say these specific things are entirely or even primarily Maedhros' fault...but I think it would be very hard not to be angry with a cousin/close friend who had helped to put you in these positions, particularly depending on how Maedhros handles the situation after their reunion (i.e. whether he apologizes or doubles down or tries to pretend nothing is wrong).
This definitely relates to my general feelings on Maedhros becoming the center of everything in this fandom but yes, the way Fingon orbits around him in so much fanon gets quite old. I'll be honest and say I don't ship Russingon even a tiny bit so it's doubly grating to see Fingon reduced to either Maedhros' hype man (if alive) or his angst-generator (if dead) and have that romance be cast as so core to everything Fingon (or Maedhros!) does. And I do think there can be plenty of crunchy drama even without the romance aspect (Anyone who's had a friendship go sour can probably attest to this).
But in terms of actual character motivation and reactions--I think it's just a lot more interesting if there are actual consequences to Maedhros' actions in terms of a relationship that was really important to him, rather than Fingon just completely forgiving Maedhros everything always so that there's no friction in the relationship.
For one, as I talked about here, their relationship already had problems before the rebellion of the Noldor. How bad things got between them in Tirion is really up to our interpretation, but it is very apparent things were not kosher between them even before Losgar happened, and before Alqualonde. I can't imagine that doesn't color later events between them.
For another, Fingon's motivations in seeking Maedhros out in Thangorodorim were political. They were also personal, but the first motivation mentioned in his decision to seek Maedhros as Melkor's prisoner is to reunite the Noldor. And as I mentioned in those tags, just because he didn't want Maedhros to die a miserable death or experience indefinite torment at Melkor's hands doesn't necessarily mean he forgave him, or even still considered him a friend. MOST of us would not want to see someone we know suffer Maedhros' fate, regardless of what they had done to us.
"Then Fingon the valiant, son of Fingolfin, resolved to heal the feud that divided the Noldor, before their Enemy should be ready for war...Fingon had been close in friendship with Maedhros...Therefore he dared a deed which is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor." ("Of the Return of the Noldor")
If nothing else, I imagine their relationship was always complicated after this. To your point above, Maedhros is deeply committed to fulfilling the oath of his father, and as the Nolofinweans and Arafinweans were there when the Feanorians swore to deal death on anyone handling a Silmaril, they have to be aware of at least the possibility that that may cause trouble someday (I'm sure they did not anticipate the scale or severity).
So Fingolfin, Fingon's father, is king (thanks to Maedhros)...but Maedhros is loyal to his oath above all else. And Maedhros still holds considerable sway over the Feanorians (I would venture to say it's a common theory if not outright knowledge that, should push come to shove, the Feanorians will obey Maedhros, not Fingolfin). How does Fingon feel about that?
To me, these things, in addition to Maedhros' earlier behavior (being part of the initial kinslaying at Alqualonde, not trying to stop the burning of the swan ships) mean that Fingon can never fully trust Maedhros again. There will always be at least a sliver of doubt and mistrust there, wondering at Maedhros' ulterior motives, at his end-game plans. And I don't think Maedhros is very good at making this not the case because he is always trying to play 5-D chess, and he's not always sneaky about it.
That bit above about how the Feanorians are loyal to Maedhros over Fingolfin? I imagine that goes doubly when Fingon becomes high king. Whatever respect the sons of Feanor might have had for Fingolfin as their elder they almost certainly do not have for their young cousin. And I do love takes where Maedhros (successfully or unsuccessfully) sees Fingon as far more malleable than Fingolfin and is trying to manipulate him from behind the scenes. (Particularly if this interacts with any insecurities Fingon may have about his abilities as king--to think that even Maedhros sees him as a weak ruler/weaker than his father!)
I don't mean to suggest they were never close again after the rebellion (although you could perhaps make the case), but that there was never the same level of trust, ease, and companionship in that friendship that there had been before. Forever after, there was always political calculus involved, because of the kingship, because of the oath, because of Maedhros' refusal to disavow the actions of his family (Admittedly--we don't know what position he took on Alqualonde or Losgar afterwards; it's never stated or even implied, iirc. However, based on his response to Celegorm and Curufin's attempted coup against Finrod [nothing] and the attempted assault of Luthien [nothing] and attempted murder of Beren [nothing], I will extrapolate the headcanon that he was not keen to admit to either of the earlier instances as being a mistake.)
Anyway to me it's sooo tasty if they stayed (sort of) friends and yet there was this unspoken mistrust that was always there after that, perhaps alongside a kind of golden nostalgia for the "old days" of their friendship.
(Also juicy drama to me if Fingon becomes a lot closer with Finrod than he had been in Aman due to Helcaraxe trauma/responsibility bonding and Maedhros has to grind his teeth and live with the fact that Fingon trusts Finrod more than he trusts Maedhros now. And lots of love for fans who also explore Fingon's canonical friendship with Aegnor and Angrod! )
There's also the fact that Fingon bites the dust before the worst of Maedhros' actions. I simply cannot see Fingon justifying the assault on Doriath, or Sirion, or the kidnapping of Elrond and Elros, or the assault on Eonwe's Elven guard. Absolutely, there is grief in seeing someone you loved and valued become someone you cannot support, but I can never buy into post-Mandos takes where Fingon just handwaves everything Maedhros did after Fingon's death.
So yes, there it is. Maedhros and Fingon's political drama charged friendship fallout.

In other news, definitely wondering who Celebrimbor’s ill-advised bff is going to be played by. Can’t wait for Galadriel to be like, “look, your boyfriend is evil, I can smell it” and Celebrimbor will be like, “bUt hE heLpS maKe CoOl RiNgS, plz bE rEaSonabLe…”
Also, Celeborn, where is that lad?

trick'r treat!
know what, I love this au for which I may never write the longfic it deserves. another notes excerpt:
Reiterate the monstrous grief of these once shining halls being so dark. Celebrimbor subconsciously thought the Dwarves - constant, steady, usually knowing when to keep their noses out of Dooms - would outlast all the foolish endeavors of Elves.
Gimli surprised at Celebrimbor knowing his way around so well, when even with allies, dwarvish halls are traditionally kept more private? Celebrimbor: “Wellll when you’re allies and trading and crafting partners with people for 500-odd years, longer than any of their lifetimes, you get invited in more than any of them remember and you quietly pick things up without mentioning it…”?
Not that there hasn’t been significant (emotionally tragic) remodling! Chamber of Records: used to be a closet but ok
Investigating records… Celebrimbor spots a carving in the wall that might’ve once been a tree like on the Doors, before 1000ish years of mild erosion. Behind it, he finds a half-written letter and several runestones, smooth stones carved with tiny tiny dwarvish script
Letter: To eny elf who reads this: I think the thing that killed Durin is one of your ancient monsters, out of my ancestor Narvi’s tales. Balor said something about whips before he died, and there is fire deep in the shaft. I’ll try to leave word in the Cursed Forest as we pass it.
Celebrimbor Sings the runestone awake, runes of light shimmering in the air above it. Most recently accessed text is (Narvi’s handwriting, recording one of the many tales Celebrimbor told her, for she loved adventure & drama) a description of Balrogs [& key someone’s death no doubt]
(Gimli: “You know how to wake a runestone? Only loremasters [are supposed to] know how to work a runestone!!”
Celebrimbor:“I kind of trick it into thinking I’m a dwarf?”)
Celebrimbor felt like laughing. He felt like weeping.
“Gandalf,” he said, displaying the runes to the Maia, “we have to go. We have to go now.”

Maglor/Daeron mpreg
Maglor was honestly enjoying the festival. All the planning details were Fingolfin’s responsibility. Maglor’s younger brothers were back East, guarding the border that hadn’t had a serious battle in years, and unable to cause political drama. Celebrimbor and Gil-Galad were both in attendance, with Celebrimbor looking out for his “younger cousin” before Gil-Galad went to Ethel Sirion to learn about court.
For the first time since Valinor, Maglor could sing without any other concerns. After a few songs, he had acquired a crowd. Some of them were Silvan and Falmari, and Maglor always took extra pride when he was recognized purely for his voice, not his family name.
One stranger in the crowd seemed very intent though. He stared directly at Maglor, though he did not move when someone blocked his view. Instead the stranger remained still.
Three  songs after the stranger appeared though, Maglor noticed a strange vibration. This elf was humming under his breath - but in perfect rhythm with the songs Maglor had never before played in front of audience, and notes that only departed from Maglor’s own to go on on trilling runs of harmonies.
Maglor stopped singing to take a drink of the excellent wine. He had not been on any sort of stage, so it was easy enough to approach the stranger.
“You have a good sense of melody,” Maglor said. “Do you play an instrument yourself?”
“I play the lyre, and the twin pipes, and sing as well. Your voice is very well trained.”
“Thank you. Talent without practice is wasted, after all.”
“Is it?”
“It’s a saying from Tirion, or perhaps just from my kin folk. But that’s not important.”
“What is, then?”
“I would love to hear you actually sing or play, rather than just muffled accompaniments.”
__
They create a melody, a harmony, a song that takes on a life of its own. Their voices twine into something that is made of both of them, but a thing unto itself. Daeron realizes that he has invoked his maternal inheritance too late. He pulls back from the song, to tell Maglor what they have done, but Maglor sees only that their creation is about to falter.
Maglor sings louder, and claims the tune as his own. It needs a vessel, and Maglor offers his. Daeron initially panics, but communicates to Maglor that co-creation with a maia is approximately similar to having a baby, and Maglor as male is totally unequipped for that.
“Oh, is that the only problem! It’s not pleasant, but I can do so again.”
Maglor goes to Doriath their son a year later, begging for safety for the grandson of the king and queen. Maglor pushes through branches, carefully protecting the bundle in his arms. But at one wild rose bush, the edge of the blanket is caught. When Maglor untangles it, the baby has disappeared from the blanket, and the rose bush grown brambles so thick Maglor could not reach even a finger in. “I named him for the strength of his grip and the weight of his actions!” Maglor shrieks at the trees. “Lungum, if you ever let him speak his mother-tongue!” The forest is silent, though the bush next to him now has buds amidst the thorns.
They say after that Mablung of the heavy hand was at the Mereth Aderthad, and it is true, the way elves count the beginning of a life.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Nerdanel vs Círdan
Nerdanel:
The wife of Fëanor, who later grew estranged from him.
Círdan:
Lord of the Falas and Master of the Grey Havens.
The one elven king who is not a never-ending disasterfest! Has been kinging for as long as anyone has been, extremely good at his job and gets into very little drama. Everybody’s grandpa, probably tons of foster kids before and after Gil-galad. Legitimately a nice guy, too, never seems to run out of patience. Boats!
He’s just there doing his thing, building cool boats. May or may not have the single elf braincell. Tired of babysitting adult elves that are too dramatic. He’s the resident old guy (tm). canonically has a beard, repeat, breaking elf stereotypes. Celebrimbor gave him Narya, and when Gandalf showed up he knew the Maia needed/should have it more than him so he gave it up. Gave up a Ring of Power. Stayed there to build people quality boats so they could sail if and when they wanted in the Third Age. He’s dealt with a lot and seems to have stayed sane. wahoo to that.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤
thank you @samarqqand for the tag!! i spent the last two years finishing my masters, writing papers and proposals and a thesis etc, so i’ve been largely ficced out for a long time. but these five are my most darling works, and i will inevitably write more lesbian feanor/nerdanel, because i am addicted to dyke drama and they do it so well.
unfortunately, my two year break from writing fic also coincided with a very long sabbatical from reading fic, and i am desperate to catch up on the everybody’s greatest hits. tagging @i-am-a-lonely-visitor, @undercat-overdog, @crackinthecup, @aipilosse, and @potatoobsessed999 (but if you’ve already done it, feel free to do it again or to ignore)
now in no particular order (at least that i’ll admit), my top fic self-recs:
1. affectation: celebrimbor/annatar, t, 5k words, content warning for inevitable gore and torture mentions
Annatar knew the irritation in his own expression, could taste the disdain in his mouth. He said, rather plainly, “Celebrimbor of Eregion. I am going to eat you.”
i was taking a seminar on archive theory when i wrote this, and the idea of sauron curating an archive of things he took from celebrimbor’s rooms and personal library after his ruin of ost-in-edhil got its teeth into me. the archive building ended up mostly off-screen; instead annatar begrudgingly advises grad students, discovers archive anthrax, and is overall too familiar with his most tolerable colleague.
2. little tenderness: feanor/nerdanel, e, 4k
“Is it not exhausting to imagine abandonment around every darkened corner, wife of mine?”
feanor and nerdanel have t4t lesbian divorce sex following feanor’s exile to formenos. nothing is resolved, and arguably they both get worse. feanor’s missed character potential as a genderfucked lesbian with the same extremely large chips on her shoulder regarding primogeniture, her sons, and high kingship still regularly turns my own brain to soup.
3. letter 97: fingon/maedhros but also gen, t, 9k
“Still the question remains,” Maedhros continued tranquilly, “whether you were offended on my behalf or on yours, when you were accused of keeping a monster leashed for your own amusement.”
the elfschatology one! featuring my own wretched and reprehensible darling, an orc angband escapee doing a little bit of an anthropological study abroad. fingon visits maedhros in himring, wrestles with both his own and maedhros’ wartime uncertainties on what makes an elf, what makes an orc, and what an end to a war would even mean if they made if there. ‘so you want to understand your monstrous boyfriend’s lukewarm concern for his immortal soul,’ a generally unhelpful how-to
4. on gold, and the wearing of red: caranthir & maedhros, g, 4k
“My messengers wear gold in their mouths,” he said curtly, and his brother flashed him a brief smile. The gold of Maedhros’ own teeth shone in firelight.
caranthir’s pre-nirnaeth relationship with his eldest brother as demonstrated through the fashion trends he disapproves of, the ones he adopts himself, and the ones he actively enables. maedhros is more than a little monstrous and simultaneously very beloved by his men and his little brother both. in other words, the sharp teeth fic.
5. to my father’s house: caranthir & finrod, t, 17.5k (4 chapters), content warning for major character death and gore
“It is not a very long dream. There is a servant atop the stairs with a carafe, and one of your brothers is giving a toast, though in the middle of it the servant drops the carafe and—” He gestures vaguely. “—wine, all down the stairs.”
caranthir and his damnably likeable arafinwean cousin, until both their deaths. in which caranthir is also cursed with perhaps the most useless gift of foresight in first age history, and dreams since childhood of the various ways in which he could, would, and ultimately does die. relatedly, there is something so special to me about a man who does fiber arts and is also unfalteringly miserable.
you can find the rest of my fic at ao3 under batshape.
