@sincereme sent: do you hear what i'm saying or not?

she thought the other time was enough. one conversation to satisfy the nurses and secure that she would never have to talk to connor again. not that talking to him was entirely abysmal ( strangely, it did feel good to talk to someone her age again ), but johanna could admit that he scares her. dr. fogg's orders to prevent her from talking to any of her peers are bound to come soon enough. talking might lead to a friendship, friendship leads to trust, trust leads to admitting the awful deeds the doctor had done to her. sometimes, it feels like johanna is still locked in her bedroom with her guardian.
eyes close for a second, grimacing at his reaction to merely approaching him. when she reopens them, she sighs. ❝ i'm sorry. they-they told me again. they wanted me to come . . . they don't even tell me what they want! they just want me to come talk to you. i'm sorry. i'm sorry, i'm sorry, i'm sorry. just--- ❞ another sigh ❝ --- i'll just sit here and pretend. ❞

the girl seems to come from another world altogether. the nurses gossip to each other between various "treatments" about her, which tugs at johanna's heartstrings ( no one should be talked about as if they're an object ), yet she cannot help but listen in. apparently, she was brought to them wearing trousers. a girl no older than thirteen in black trousers of a strange fabric. the length of her hair makes johanna wonder if she was forced to sell it before this. in whatever world she came from. there was the occasional joke that the girl must be irish. on the only occasion she ever heard the girl speak, she didn't sound irish. foreign, but even johanna, after years of being locked away in the bedroom, knew she wasn't a brutish walking stereotype of a neighboring country.
she was nothing more than a young girl with cropped hair and wide, brown eyes that remind johanna much of a starved rabbit with a fate as doomed as the rest of them: a lifetime rotting away in a madhouse. ( but johanna still sings. she sings despite the complaining from the nurses and the ways they discipline her before of it. she sings despite her hankering exhaustion and the moment where she squeezed her eyes tight and wished she could end it all. if she doesn't sing how will anthony find her? )
today, they've somehow ended up near each other. the little girl and her. johanna doesn't move from the window until she's dragged away, even then her fingers grip at the bars until she's bloody and bruised. why the girl joined her today is none of her business, really. no one talks to each other in here. no one has any reason to make a new friend. besides, there's no telling who she could trust. any one of the women around them could have blood on their minds. perhaps, the girl just needed some fresh air, too.
❝ are you sick? ❞ despite herself, johanna hears the question in her own voice. she doesn't talk to people here. not even the ones that seem perfectly sane but ended up locked away for various reasons. yet, her gaze turns down to the younger girl beside her. ❝ i've heard you coughing. it sounds like you are. because if you are -- ❞ tone lowers ❝ -- don't tell anyone. they'll bleed you out. ❞ a faint memory exists in the depths of her mind of being pinned down by the strong arms of several nurses and watching in frozen horror as her own skin was cut open and she watched blood drain. ❝ that's what they do when you're ill. ❞

The path further into the floating mountains was all the worse to navigate thanks to the lack of light, the only useful guides you had were the faintly flickering bioluminescent lights from the forest deep below. The branches twisting around each other to create a naturally built bridge from mountain to mountain benefited from this, contrasting as a clear obscured line to your eyes against the glow underneath.
The easiest part of your journey, in hindsight, was just skipping along this line.
You weren’t exactly happy about this.
The more you left behind, the more you were freaked out that Neteyam or anyone else was onto your intentions already and hot on your trail right this moment. Imagining father making a beeline to you in the air with Bob, a cruel, merciless whistling arrow, made you all jittery and almost puking kind of nervous, pulling at the depths of your stomach.
Your rationality told you that it was a half an hour walk to your spot from the tent, and Neteyam would be hurrying the more he thought he wasn’t able to catch up with you along the way, so you had around twenty minutes until the whole family was panicking and raising the clan to look for you.
Tuk had gone missing once thanks to some hide and seek game with Lo’ak (she’d hidden so well and was waiting for her siblings to find her already, blindly sticking to the game for an entire day, not out of stubbornness but childish purity), and this was exactly what had gone down —
the resentful part of you questioned if father thinks of you highly enough to resort to that.
If something happened to you, he would maybe urge your brothers to search for you for a while, and drop it then — leaving you to your own devices happily.
Maybe.
Were you even worth it in his eyes for a search party? You wondered if he cared enough that you disappeared.
But that was a stupid, childish thought you knew you fantasized about a lot — perhaps this was why he’d called you immature. This was no mindset for a strong, independent, confident hunter. The thought father was right, even a miniscule bit was bitter on your tongue, worse than what he called black coffee.
Disappearing so you’d find out just how much he cared was unfair to mom, for one.
She had lost so much in such a short amount of time, the stories she sang poignantly about were hard to listen to without tearing up. Her home. The trees of voices, all the lost ancestors. Her father. Uncle Tsu’tey. Her first ikran, Seze. Loss upon loss you think there’d be nothing left to give anymore, but sky people’s fire was always hungry, always willing to waste more to grow bigger.
You wouldn’t forgive yourself for making her cry in your pursuit to punish father. Never.
You weren’t a child.
Just wanted to be one, sometimes.
Wanted father to babytalk you, pet your head longer than a passing touch as he walked away hurriedly to attend to other matters, make beads for your braids the way he always did from pretty stones he found on ponds, carve you little trinkets when you graciously had to give up your toys to Lo’ak and Kiri’s greed.
Your neck piece was all them in fact, he’d see it if he ever paid enough attention, or perhaps it was all insignificant to him, five kids meant countless belongings for each individual child had been passed down from his hands, it would be a miracle for father to recognize you still wore his clumsy creations. But again, it had been too long since he’d even looked at you affectionately, he wouldn’t See.
He’d transferred those habits entirely to Neteyam at one point in time.
Your older brother would always ruffle Lo’ak’s hair and tease him the way father used to, comfort him in his own playful way, and even though the younger looked discontent at being babied, you knew he was happy Neteyam was quite literally his shadow to look after him through tough times — including shielding from father’s line of fire. In return, he was suffering from being a foil to the older son, you understood the struggle because you were going through the same comparison, you just weren’t obsessed with catching and living up to father as much as Lo’ak did.
Win some, lose some, I guess.
Plus, Neteyam was trembling under the massive planet-weight pressure, he had to set the standard, he had to live up to the older brother title. He was becoming more of a father figure to Tuk as days passed and the Olo’eyktan became more transparent from his family’s life as a dad to five.
Besides, Lo’ak made trouble enough for two people to go around that you felt bad for your big brother, Kiri was thankfully more mellow (despite frequently hanging out together with him and Spider) compared to him that Neteyam could breathe, not having to divide his attention.
You were in awe of her about how disconnected she was from all the changing dynamics. She had her own problems you could never understand, more spiritual than your grandmother, and ever the ethereal soul who you thought would disappear into Eywa if flesh wasn’t holding her down to Eywa’eveng.
You were the teeniest, tiniest bit jealous of her (and Tuk) holding the softer sides of father, the boys thought he was deliberately softer because they were girls — but you were also a girl, so why weren’t you allowed in?
Well, thanks to that, you’d gotten closer with Neteyam and known him better after the whole clan had settled on High Camp, so it wasn’t all that bad. You could badmouth father all day long sitting on some rock and make him laugh abashedly, guilty that he was smiling along with the trashing of the father’s name he respected so much — it was therapy, as Norm had taught humans frequently sought back on earth. It got you trying some things with Neteyam, becoming more of a companion and ranting buddy for him who he could be honest and open with, so that he didn’t have to worry about taking up a larger role in your life to fill father’s missing presence. You were concerned about him more than he could be concerned about you.
That got you contemplating if father had noticed how comfortable his two oldest children were with each other that it was always Neteyam who he sent after you. A girl could dream, no? For one moment, it wasn’t because it was Neteyam’s responsibility, but because father was paying attention to how his kids got along.
The image of him pushed you to be frantically fast to reach your destination as the fear returned with might. If he caught you right now when you had no ikran to prove him wrong, the punishment he was sure to give would be way more humiliating, you at least wanted something in your name to taunt him with if you were going down anyways.
A smile crept up your face at imagining him discombobulated and speechless, unable to pick out one thing that you did wrong.
The carelessness that came with your speed combined with how dark it was to see where to clutch and put your feet on caused you to slip up countless times when climbing, the sharp rocks scraping the insides of your palms and insides of your forearms, lifting your skin up. What you cared about more than the pain was that the blood was now tracking material for your family to sniff you out — you couldn’t exactly wipe the rocks clean, so you carried on with a hammering heart, more afraid of father ruining your perfect moment than whatever ikran that would soon be going straight for your throat.
At least you were able to wash the blood off your hands in the waterfall.
Downside? You couldn’t see shit. With your bare back flushed straight to the wall of rock and your feet feeling out the thin edge, the shrill cry of ikrans and the roaring of water was about to overwhelm your senses too much to pay attention —
and you slipped.
The shriek that ripped out of you at the sensation of falling and the drop of your stomach alone almost made you pass out, and for a split second it was a good thing that you wouldn’t feel the moment you died, but your body, once again, was one step ahead of you, it twisted in the air the last second and your hands gripped the ledge.
The wet rock and your blood made all that your life was hanging on slippery as you dangled into the abyss, swaying with the strong winds at this height.
You didn’t know if it was the adrenaline or the nervousness, but something made you laugh out loud, and the bubbling laughter continued until you were able to pull yourself up safely at the ikran rookery, finally.
Looking around like a fish out of water, how you hadn’t cracked your skull open shooting down to the forest below was a total miracle.
You’d made it?
No one was there to witness what you just pulled off in total darkness. Your whole body was shaking, and you weren’t even chosen by an ikran yet. This was happening. Shit. This was totally happening!
Your excited and terrified, “Hell yeah!” went unheard apart from your aerial crowd.
But.
One among them answered your holler with its own that cut into the night like a battle horn. It was the closest one to you that was apparently watching you the whole time, starting to roar at you and twitching on its feet, shadow in the night informing you of its movements.
You’d seen from Neteyam and Lo’ak’s iknimayas that you only had a few seconds to pull your shit together until it attacked, this was meant to be dangerous, serious, you could end up as a late night snack to them if things went wrong, but you couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear that it had chosen you.
You were chosen.
It wanted you as its rider.
If only father could see you now. The sensation of being the one — being special was unmatched. Now you could somehow get the fraction of the high he must have felt as Toruk Makto.
The, “Let’s fucking go!” that left you kept echoing into the night as you lunged at it, dodging to the left when it snapped at your head, hooking one arm around the ikran’s slender neck and clamping your legs around it the moment it started thrashing around wildly.
You didn’t know why father had made a big deal out of it. You formed tsaheylu in no time, breaking Neteyam’s record — and you didn’t even have the rope to hoop around its neck and jaw.
Firstborn daughter excellence.
Confidence restored and triumphing wildly to the pulse of your heart, the flickering smile on your face in wonder turned into a full-fledged smirk. At that moment, nothing mattered. It was just you and your victory. Proving father wrong.
Feeling the ikran’s lifeforce through the bond, a shiver went down your back as his beady eye looked up at you, pupil shrinking and expanding rapidly while you both took a minute to catch your breaths after the fierce wrestling.
“Gotcha,” you panted. “You’re mine now.”
The adrenaline made everything sparkle and shine, your spirits soaring high and unbothered about literally anything else in the world, and for one glorious moment, lost in the memories of your brothers’ iknimayas boasting with cheers from the clan and sometimes encouraging, sometimes fearful screams of your parents, your spirit sought them out to be soaked in the same pride — forgetting that it was night and nobody was there to celebrate you.
You were all alone.
The smile dropped from your face and crashed down like paper thin porcelain upon the slightest movement.
Right.
You’d forgotten you were doing this out of spite. It snuffed every twinkle of magic away from the previously shimmering milestone of your life.
Your ikran felt the crushing disappointment through your connection and chirped at you, almost like an excited sibling pulling on your arm to show you something, weirdly comforting. Mom’s ikran was a spitfire, but also nurturing — this one felt different somehow, you felt him bouncing from wall to wall in your head, hyperactive and cheerful.
Flying! He wanted to fly!
The first flight sealed the bond, after all.
You weren’t alone even if none of your family members were here to share the joy — you had your new buddy. And the drop of gravity was thrilling this time, not the terrifying chaos that had your asshole shriveling up as it was when you’d missed your step.
The flights with mom were something you looked forward to, drying up in frequency as you aged, you’d missed the wind on your body and the greenery dancing below as you maneuvered in the air — but mom reserved nighttime rides for father only, and after the move to High Camp, the skimpering chance you could get your way if you begged cutely enough was gone too. You’d never flown at night.
The sight was out of this world. The stars leaving a glowing trail above you, the forest pulsing with faint purple, green and blue lights underneath, everything was elevated in beauty because darkness let them shine.
You made loops in the air with your ikran, got as high in the air as you could before your breath thinned, and scraped at the tips of trees before shooting up again, all the while laughter you’ve never screamed before bubbled out of you.
And you were all alone. There was no mom to gleefully taunt your ikran with hers to get both of you dancing in the air. There was no father to watch on with a small smile he was fighting. There was no Neteyam to stop you from dipping too close to the ground, and no Lo’ak to challenge you to get closer to race with him — no Kiri to complain how all of you were being so childish, how stupid this was all the while she was the worst of you all, instigating all the chaos.
No Tuk in your mom’s lap whining about you guys leaving her off the fun.
Instead, there was the scent of a bogey in the air, snapping you out of the haze of sorrow.
When had you ventured out further into unprotected territory?
Linked with your thought process, the ikran stopped advancing forward and started beating his wings downward to stay unmoving, you observed the surroundings to get a better feeling of where you were, and noticed this was around the old shack, artificial lights were gliding between the leaves and branches that obscured your view of just who was roaming the grounds at night, definitely not a natural part of the forest’s flora.
Father’s voice materialized in your head, drilled into you and your siblings’ heads over and over again. If you come across any threat at all, do not engage, fall back and inform me. Got it? You call for me first.
And that split second of being afraid was your death sentence — that father would be so angry at you for your ignorance, amateurism, carelessness and idiocy that he could throw you out of the family for almost leading the demons to base simply by being there that they could figure out what direction you’d come from. That moment of weakness was enough for someone to snipe you out, and get you falling down from your ikran straight into the forest below, the cries of your new friend falling silent on your ears as you did your best to hug giant leaves to cushion your fall to the best of your ability. .
 Barely any time was left for you to shake the disorienting motion sickness off, you couldn’t even attempt to run into the accepting, protective hands of the forest before whoever just shot at you was onto you, harshly gripping your arms and raising you up.
Father’s gonna be so mad if he finds out. Shit, I gotta get out of this.
But… Avatars? In full camo, armored, even. You hadn’t heard of this from anybody in camp!
“Damn! Didn’t actually think you’d be able to land the shot from all of that tree, man! Up-top!”
Two of them high-fived, you were actually going to be sick.
Thumb between his belt and stomach, another Avatar strutted towards you. The saunter and confidence meant that he was their leader. “Now, now… What do we have here?”
“A native.” You were being pushed down on your knees, one hand being grabbed and shown like a trophy. Just how many were there? You couldn't calm yourself enough to focus! “Four fingers.”
The speaker this time was a woman. “How unusual. Those monkeys don’t leave their coven at night.”
“Where were you flying, little bird?” The leader, a sleazy smirk on his face, leaned down to take a good look at you. “Leading away from the nest, perhaps?”
“She don’t understand, Colonel, don’t bother. Ya think Sully could ever manage teaching one word of English to those?”
“Watch how she learns in three seconds.” He yanked on your queue so hard you saw white light in this hour of darkness — and when your vision came back, a screen with your father’s face was being shoved to your face. “Jake Sully. Toruc Mactoe. Where is he?”
You screamed when he pulled with increasing strength, keeping up with the act you didn’t understand. And the state of pain and terror massively helped, contributing to you looking frantic and lost, only knowing that you were being zapped to your core.
“Seems like I don’t need to ask you.” His fingers snapped your head back to get a good look at your earpiece, late to notice you had it on at all because of the dark. “Can directly ask the man himself.”
All you could form to think was, ‘Father’s gonna kill me for this. He’s actually gonna kill me this time.’
You weren't terrified of what the Avatars would do to you. You were afraid of him.
Tumblr media
One empty shell from the reloaded machine gun flew away, tinkling hollow when it fell down, and rolled until it stopped in a small pool of water that had formed on the jagged ground of the cave systems. In the scarlet and orange glow of the campfire he’d haphazardly put together right outside of their home out of impatience after Neytiri had basically thrown him out, Jake almost mistook the liquid for blood.
An ominous cloud of dread settled on his shoulders, a paranoia every father tended to go through.
“Big Brother, this is Devil Dog. State your status, over.”
Neteyam didn’t miss a beat to answer, thankfully. “Devil Dog, this is Big Brother. I’m still en route to Foxcove, over.”
“How much longer?”
“Ten minutes at best, sir. Over.”
What he wanted to say was how come he hadn’t met you halfway, but it was empty talk. No need to stress the boy out. “Devil Dog signing out.”
This girl was half the reason for the wrinkles on his forehead, Jesus Christ. He was basically waiting you out like a father sitting in the dark to ambush his daughter who had snuck out at night, for that single glorious moment of yeah that’s right, you got caught, after the light would come on to ruin that moment of relief of successfully making it back in.
His mate had scolded him to be nice and understanding, a Marine was anything but, the closest he could compromise was not being as mean to you than he had to be. Sassing, “So how was your Iknimaya?” like he planned was out the window — Neytiri was spot-on to say the girl would simply give the same mean energy right back at him, and that could only mean another erupting volcano of a fight and a good night’s sleep ruined for him, overthinking where he went wrong and how else he could have salvaged the situation.
He’d just make you tend to the ikrans for a week for some patience practice, cleaning shit for hours on a daily basis would certainly throw the temporary whim of the rite of passage hyperfixation out of your system. The possibility of you shouting you hated him was unavoidable, but Jake had to get his point across, no matter how terribly it nauseated him to hear something like that from his child.
It was strange to remember he couldn’t care less for what people thought of him in the past. Some shithead he wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about hated Jake’s guts? Good. He was living in their head rent free, it was fun even — Neytiri too, Jake absolutely enjoyed her hating game at first.
Being legitimately resented by his very own child, though, was a heartbreak he didn’t expect to hurt him the way it did, knocking air off his lungs the first time he heard it. A burning stab right in his heart that wouldn’t go away until he had to hear it for himself you hadn’t meant any of what you said.
Because that said hate actually stemmed from hurt Jake must have inflicted. Because you could actually despise him, and never allow him to reconnect with you again if he could ever manage to garner the courage to reach out to you — a mightier challenge than hunting Toruk in the sense it actually scared him.
His teenage daughter. Scared him.
Jake didn’t know what to do about it, he couldn’t even show what exactly this made him feel, too ashamed and proud for it in the first place.
The growing distance between you and him was an uneasy, frightened bird he tried to shush and calm in his heart in favor of other pressing matters that drilled small holes in the depths of his stomach, and over time, those little holes had fused together to create one big pit with greater gravitational pull than the sun — until Jake didn’t know how to stitch them back together anymore.
He told himself he would talk to you later, for sure. The morning after every argument, every fight, every jab from you he snapped at he would try to make amends for, definitely.
And then he didn’t.
“What is this, are you palulukan ambushing prey? I told you to make up with her, not prepare for hunting.”
Jake shook his head, dropping the machine gun back inside the crate. The warmed metal was some sort of consolation to his nerves. Marine habit. Always felt safer with a gun near. (Or was it the American in him?) “Neytiri,” he acknowledged, bobbing his head. “I’m just passing time.”
“What do you think will happen when she comes back and sees you waiting for her like this?”
Ah, like the old times when Jake couldn’t do one thing right in her eyes. “Yes, ma’am,” he said playfully, but with no mirth behind it, closing the crate with a muffled thunk. With nothing to do with them, one elbow went to his knee and the other hand’s fingers started a rhythm on the lid he’d just shut.
His mate’s hand gingerly came down on his shoulder, kneading the nerves. “Just talk to her, Ma’Jake.”
“I don’t know how to,” he admitted, he covered her fingers on her shoulder with his, and she immediately held his hand back. “Don’t know what to even tell her.” He gave an exhale from the deeper, tired parts of his soul, gazing at the path leading away from their tent. “With Neteyam and Lo’ak, it’s easy. I tell ‘em what to do and they—”
Neytiri took a seat next to him, gathering their hands together. “Suffer just the same.” Jake was about to brush her off, but she didn’t relent. “What you’re doing is hurting them.”
This now was about all of their children rather than you, specifically. Neytiri was trying to get him to see the bigger picture first before moving to cover what he did wrong with each child of his, they had had this conversation countless times before.
Here we go again, Jake thought.
“Doesn’t matter if that’s what it takes to keep them safe.”
“Does it?” Neytiri leaned in, and calmness washed over him despite the disturbing nature of what she was saying. “Does it keep them safe? Or push them to act out more, get in worse situations?”
He grimaced. “I have to—”
“You feel like you have to.” His mate shook their clasped hands, rattling his bones. “I keep my children safe with trust and honesty. Transparence, Ma’Jake. So that they listen to me when I mean it because they See me. You shut them out.” Her lips bared to show her pearly teeth as she was practically beseeching him. “You don’t get your children’s trust by treating them like a squad.”
“They trust me plenty.”
“They trust Olo’eyktan. Toruk Makto. What about their father?”
“I make sure they’re safe.” Neytiri dropped his hands with an agitated snarl, she thought they were back at the beginning again, he couldn’t make her truly understand no matter what he did. He poured his heart out through their tsaheylu everytime, but her values and beliefs were wired so differently from his at the end of the day. “I make sure they stay where I want them to stay for their own good.” Jake shook his head, his voice soft, hushed. No force behind it when Neytiri was heated in return. “One day they’ll understand.”
“They won’t if you never tell them.”
“Tell them what?” Jake asked. “That I’m being harsh on them to prepare them for war? You think they’ll take it seriously after this?”
“Na’vi were in war long before you. There will be wars after you. No parent sullied his child’s happiness for the price of becoming a warrior. You still don’t get our ways even after all these years.”
“The sky people’s way,” Jake emphasized with his arms. “I have to teach them how they think, what they go through, so they know what they’ll be facing, okay? I can’t simply teach them by telling them.”
“You’re deluding yourself, Jake. Contradicting.” Neytiri was gentle in her cruelty, the flickering flames burned less than her amber eyes. “Tuk and Kiri are getting none of this. I know your heart isn’t allowing you. Why can’t you do the same for your other children?”
Because he had gone too far already with the older three.
Trial and error.
He couldn’t take back the things he did and say back — and quite honestly? Jake was being pulled from all sides to sit down and rethink his parenting. All he thought anymore was how to protect his family, frequent nightmares of losing his children in gruesome ways were haunting his every step.
A father protects his children, that’s what gives him meaning.
Jake had his own desperate ways to do so.
He opened his mouth to say something back, anything, but was interrupted by the communication line coming on. “Dad.”
Jake immediately knew something was wrong, body sitting ramrod straight. If the frantic breathing and barely controlled voice wasn’t any indication of it, his eldest’s behavior was. Neteyam didn’t slip up in the codenames like Lo’ak did, dropped all formalities only when he was borderline panicking.
“Dad. I’m sorry, dad, sir, I can’t find her, dad, I’ve looked everywhere around here, I thought maybe she was hiding underwater, behind rocks—but I can’t, I can’t—.”
“Slow down.” Jake could barely contain his own panic rising from the state his son was in. The boy wasn’t able to see it, but he couldn’t stop himself from leaning in as if Neteyam was right in front of him, and started gesturing with his hand. “Slow down, son.”
“Dad—”
Jake tsk-ed. “Neteyam, slow. Slow.”
Neytiri took his elbow. “What is it?”
He told her to wait with his gaze, and turned his attention back to Neteyam. This could only mean one thing, he was praying to be wrong — needed clarification. “Now tell me calmer. What’s going on?”
“She’s never been here. She never came here in the first place. There’s no sign of her. No trace. I’ve tracked.”
Jake’s instant response was fear. Domineering, ice-cold, cutting fear. Bodily and emotionally both. You were clockwork, similar to him in having unchanging routines and patterns. Angry? Went for a walk. Depressed? No talking to anyone until it passed. Happy? Wanted to go to the forest to spend time with your siblings and always craved sweet fruit. Didn’t want to be around anyone? Hid in the little bioluminescent cove with a pond two little mountains away, always. Always.
Neytiri sensed this, observing the change of demeanor in him.“Ma’Jake?”
“Okay, son.” He seized back control. One missing child was enough. “Stay right there and don’t move. I’ll contact you.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Jake,” Neytiri hissed finally, at the end of her ropes.
“She didn’t go to the cove,” he said, face icy neutral as always, but his eyes showed dizzying concern. Neytiri put a hand on her mouth as Jake wasted no time in changing channels. “Night Owl, this is Devil Dog. Come in.” He couldn’t even wait two seconds before trying again. “Night Owl, what is your status? Where are you?”
Silence.
The more fear dug deeper into his skin, the more his anger and annoyance soared up, his tail was whipping the air erratically, the finger on the earpiece could send the metal right into his brain with how hard he was pressing on it. “I know you can hear me. This is no time for playing games. You know what you did to your brother? Do you know how panicked he was, not being able to find you—”
Then Jake remembered what Neytiri advised, he didn’t change strategies because she was right next to him to dig his eyes out, but because his heart was picking up its pace by the second. “Tell me where you are, I’ll leave you alone, I promise, alright? If you’re somewhere open, get to safety, I’m only asking this from you. Or else—”
“Don’t.” Neytiri raised a warning finger at him, voice just above a whisper so they could hear their daughter if she decided to cut in. “Threaten her.”
He couldn’t stop her from snatching the communication device off of him. “Ma’ite, it’s mom. Can you talk to me at least?”
His ears twitched at picking up on you responding, not quite making out the words.
Jake’s eyes shut close for a long time as his whole eyebrow line migrated upwards, he physically had to get a few steps between him and the earpiece so the obliviating worry that’d almost blinded him wouldn’t cause him to say something he’d greatly regret later. He could feel himself deflating. A migraine could be coming anytime soon.
You wouldn’t even acknowledge his existence but the moment your mother interrupted, you did? Fine. Fine. He didn’t care. Jake could live with it. At least you were alive.
A rippling shudder shook him the moment that thought hit him, an image of you lying dead in a ditch, pale blue, flashing in his mind, he had to run a hand down his face.
When Jake looked back, irked by the silence, he found Neytiri standing completely stock-still. And all of a sudden, her petrifying glare was on him, ears pinned all the way back, hands gradually starting to tremble.
“Neytiri?”
She wordlessly handed him the device, and with a deep frown, Jake put it back in his ear.
“Hi there Corporal, you hear me? Yeah, I know you do. As much as I’m charmed by the fatherly love I could give you a big old sloppy wet kiss, we have unfinished business.”
And the ground disappeared right under Jake’s feet, plunging him into hell itself.

Bar None, Present day
One of your friends had just put Single Ladies on the jukebox when you saw him across the bar. Bar None, the place you’d picked for the night, had one of those stupid app-powered ones and the three girls you had kept in touch with from high school had been abusing it all night long. But the man across the bar was so distracting that you hardly noticed. His eyes were locked on you, so tight and hot that it would send a chill up your spine if it was from the wrong set of eyes. But they were his eyes. Dark and molten and set into a sculpted face with patchy scruff and shaggy curl streaked with gray.
No, you thought, he couldn’t spark anything but desire.
“We should do the dance!” Your friend Emily slurred, tugging your arm. “C’mon! Now that you’re a single lady again, you have to own it.”
She flashed her empty ring finger as Beyonce sang, a cocky - if half drunk - look on her face as she did.
You smiled at her.
“He did put a ring on it,” you twisted the stem of your martini glass. “That’s why there was a problem when he put his dick in someone else. I think I’ll pass on the Beyonce. But thank you.”
“Come on drunky,” your friend Dana looped her arm around Emily’s waist. “Let’s go dance.”
“Woooo!” Emily threw her arms in the air and Dana gave you an exasperated but happy smile over her shoulder as she guided her to the dance floor.
“Jesus, is it that late?” Parker looked at her Apple watch. You half smiled and took a small sip of your drink as she rifled through her clutch for her phone and let out a relieved sigh. “Thank God, Kevin hasn’t been texting with a ton of stupid questions. Why did I think letting a baby get totally attached to me was a good idea? The fact that she only said mama for two weeks was great at first but now that she refuses to do bedtime without me, I’m having regrets…”
“Do you need to go?” You asked, brows raised.
She winced.
“Would you hate me if I left you with the party animals?”
You laughed.
“No,” you said. “Go home, see your husband and kid. I really do appreciate the warm welcome back, you have no idea.”
“See?” She reached across the small table and gave your arm a squeeze. “I told you, just like old times.”
“Did you go back home at 10:30 to make sure a baby was properly put to bed when we were 18?” You teased. “I forgot that part…”
She rolled her eyes.
“Almost old times,” she said. “Besides, you love Bella.”
“I do love Bella,” you said. “And I love you. Go home, I’m good.”
“You’re sure?”
“Positive. Text me when you get there?”
“Of course,” she slipped off the bar stool and came around to give you a hug and kiss your cheek. “I really am glad you’re back. Even if it’s because Reid was a dumbass.”
You just smiled a little and watched her leave, Parker pausing to wave to Dana on her way out the door.
“This seat open?”
The man from across the bar stood beside you, nodding to the seat Parker had just vacated. You smiled a little and nodded once.
“You have very convenient timing.”
“Well,” he shrugged. “Leaving a pretty girl all alone at the bar seems like a crime. Trying my damndest to stay on the right side of the law.”
“And how’s that going for you these days?”
He smirked a little. His cheek dimpled.
“Well enough.”
You looked at him, tracing the creases in his face with your eyes, the streaks of gray catching the low light of the bar. He was probably the oldest man there but damn, did he wear it well.
“You in town for a visit?” He asked, turning his beer bottle in his fingers and nodding to your friends on the dance floor. “Seeing friends?”
You cocked a little smile at him.
“No, actually. Just moved back.”
He raised his eyebrows, a look you couldn’t quite place passing over his warm features. His eyes drifted to your ring finger before he seemed to catch himself and look back at your face. You saved him the trouble, lifting your bare left hand and turning it so he could see. The indentation from your three carat engagement ring was still on your finger but your hand was empty.
“I think we should talk, Joel.”
Bar None, 10 years earlier
The man across the bar had no damn business being that good looking.
It was almost pissing you off how good looking he was. Tall, broad, with golden skin and thick, dark hair, he had the kind of face you wanted to explore intimately, in the way you could only do when someone was inside of you. The way men couldn’t control their expressions then was almost addicting. The way their eyes would roll back and their mouths would fall open, the way they stopped fucking around with pretense and just let themselves feel something - even if it was just your cunt - was beautiful and fascinating and almost elemental. It was like you could look into the very core of them for a moment, the way they always seemed to be able to look into you with just a glance. You wanted that with this man, whoever he was, this man who you caught glancing at you out of the corner of his eye.
“Aww,” Parker pouted happily at her phone. “Kevin misses me!”
“Misses you?” Emily snatched the phone from her grasp, gaping at the screen. “You’ve been gone like two hours!”
“Will you just…” Parker snatched the phone back and looked at the text again. “And I think it’s sweet.”
“You’re ditching us, aren’t you?” Emily sighed.
“I think so,” Parker winced. “Is that OK?”
You just smiled a little.
“Go see the guy who’s got you all crazy,” you said. “But I’ll see you again before I leave town, yeah?”
“Course!” She came and gave you a hug. “Good luck getting rid of me. Have fun at that thing tomorrow!”
“Yeah,” you laughed. “I’ll try.”
Emily rolled her eyes and judged Parker for a bit but it was less than an hour before she was leaving, too, with a man who’d asked her to dance and bought her a beer.
“You sure you’re alright?” She asked as she went to leave.
“Babes, I know how to be at a bar on my own. And my hotel is two doors down. I think I can figure it out.”
She kissed your cheek.
“Love you,” she said. “Try to have some fun!”
You watched her go, thinking about just how long you wanted to be sitting by yourself at a bar versus in a Holiday Inn Express standard room when a voice appeared beside you.
“This seat open?”
The man from across the bar nodded to the seat Emily had just abandoned. You smiled a little and nodded once.
“You have very convenient timing.”
“Well,” he shrugged. “Leaving a pretty girl all alone at the bar seems like a crime. Trying my damndest to stay on the right side of the law.”
“And how’s that going for you?”
He smirked a little. His cheek dimpled.
“Well enough.”
You smiled and introduced yourself before holding out your hand. He took it.
“Joel,” he said. “Don’t think I’ve seen you here before.”
“Because I’ve never been here before,” you smiled. “I’m in from out of town, my hotel is a few doors down. This was convenient and hey, the Yelp reviews weren’t the worst.”
“What brings you to the great city of Austin, Texas?” He asked, settling in on the seat beside you. He was older than you but you kind of liked men that way now that you were in your mid 20s and exhausted by every man you’d dated in college. You liked them a little older, more established, men who knew how to cook their own damn food and give you your own damn orgasm. “Business or pleasure?”
“Neither,” you smiled a little, taking a sip of your drink. “Family event.”
“That’s not pleasure?”
You laughed once.
“Not the way my family does it.”
“That why you’re in a hotel and not stayin’ with them?” He asked, brows raised.
“Bingo,” you replied. “I get in, I get drunk, I get out.”
He nodded slowly.
“Good system.”
“Worked well enough for me over the years.”
The two of you ended up talking about music and books and UT football until last call - far later than you’d intended to stay out.
“Mind if I walk you back to your hotel?” Joel asked. “Not tryin’ to be a creep but… I’d sleep a lot better tonight knowin’ you got back safe. Promise it’s not a ploy.”
“Damn, it’s not?” You asked, tucking your purse on your arm and heading for the door. “Because I was going to ask you to come up to my room if it was.”
“Well shit,” he said, catching up with you. “Maybe it is a ploy then.”
You found yourselves drawing out the walk back all the same, pace more of an amble than a brisk walk, but the hotel was so close that it really only added a few minutes to your walk all the same.
“Well,” you smiled at the door to the lobby. “This is me.”
“Yeah,” he nodded once, looking inside for a moment before looking back at you. “Look… you don’t owe me anything, alright? I’m not the kind of guy who wants to force something. I can just head on back to my truck, no hard feelings…”
“Well maybe none for you,” you teased a little. “But I might have some. Unless you really don’t want to fuck me.”
“Oh, I want to,” he said. “Trust me on that…”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” he laughed. “Been at the top of my list since you first walked in that place, baby, lemme tell you.”
“Well then,” you jerked your head toward the door. “Why don’t we cross it off the list?”
You took his hand in the elevator, his palm so broad, his fingers thick and long and callused in yours. You pressed your back against the wall and pulled him onto you so his hips were on yours and his nose brushed your own. His eyes ranged over your face, hungry and soft and open.
“You sure about this?” He asked, looking down at the rest of your body for a moment before going back to your face. “Sure you don’t have something better to do than some old man?”
“I’m sure,” you smiled at him, draping your arms over his shoulders. “Besides, I like old men. How old are you, anyway?”
“Forty-five,” he said. “How old are you?”
You snorted.
“I’m not sure I should say,” you said, holding him a little closer all the same. “Since you’re all hung up on age…”
“Not hung up on it,” he rolled his eyes. “Just… don’t need to be some youthful mistake is all. Wait, Jesus, please tell me you’re at least out of college, tell me you’re not a teenager…”
You laughed.
“No,” you shook your head. “Not a teenager. And I’ve been out of college a few years, I’m 25.”
“God,” he closed his eyes and shook his head once, like he was trying to shake the idea of you loose. “Still, that’s… you’re…”
You pressed your lips ever so slightly against his, more a quick brush than anything else, giving him every opportunity to pull back.
He didn’t take it.
Instead, he pressed his lips to yours, his hands going to your waist and tugging you tightly to his body while he pushed you back against the wall. Your arms got tighter to him and you opened your mouth, his tongue licking into you almost immediately. Joel didn’t need an engraved invitation, all he needed was a sign that you wanted him and fuck, you wanted him. More and more, each passing second, you wanted him. There was heat in you that was starting to flare so molten and hot that you pulled at his clothes, forgetting that you weren’t alone, not really.
The elevator dinged and he all but sprang back from you, both of you panting for breath.
“Fuck,” he breathed, looking you up and down, pupils blown.
“C’mon,” you took his hand. “I’m down the hall.”
You pulled him along behind you and fumbled to get your room key out of your bag. Joel’s wide, thick hands slipped around your waist as you did, tugging your ass back against his growing bulge and fuck, but he was huge. Thick and long and you knew his zipper had to be fucking killing him, cock that big and hard restrained by mere fabric and a slip of metal. His lips found the hinge of your jaw, your neck, down to your shoulder and you groaned a little as you clumsily forced the keycard in the door, the little beep the mechanism gave one of the best damn sounds you’d heard all night.
The two of you practically fell into your hotel room. You dropped your purse on the first table inside the door and started stepping out of your heels as Joel turned you around to face him, manipulating your body to put you right where he wanted you and the fire in you sparked higher, brighter as he manhandled you. Every touch he gave was loaded with need, the air thick and heavy with it as he pawed at your clothes and skin, licking into your mouth at every opportunity, taking your chin firmly in his heady grip to tug you open further for him, all but forcing you to give him everything.
You were as rough with his clothes as he was with your body, pulling so hard and fast at the buttons of his shirt that two popped free, pinging off the glass of the mass produced art that hung on the wall.
“Shit,” you panted, looking around the dark of your room for the buttons.
“Don’t give a fuck,” Joel replied, breathless, clutching you close and tight before you could pull away. “Didn’t really like this shirt, anyway.”
You shoved it down and off as he tugged your dress down your body, leaving it in a pile on the floor before turning you so the backs of your legs were against the bed. He deftly unhooked your bra with one hand then, ripping the straps down your arms but almost reverently lowering the cups, panting for breath as he exposed your breasts to his gaze. Joel tossed your bra to the side before taking the soft weight of your tits in his hands, cupping them, brushing his thumbs over your hardening nipples as he looked down at you with a look of near awe on his face. You half expected him to shove you back down onto the bed after his race to get you undressed but instead, his arm went around your waist, his hand splaying wide over the smooth skin of your back and he pulled you tight against him, making you gasp.
He moaned, deep and low, and dropped his head to your bared shoulder before trailing his nose over you to your neck, the wet heat of his breath on your skin.
“Fuck, you’re so goddamn soft,” he groaned, almost pained, and pressed his lips to your throat, making your breath catch. You clung to the broad expanse of his back, fingertips pressing into him, trying to get at every inch of his skin that you could find.
His mouth found yours and he gently, delicately, lowered you back onto the bed. He cradled your body against his own, keeping the firm line of him taut to you as he kissed you. Joel rested you on the mattress and you let your legs fall open so he could settle between your thighs, the heady weight of him pressing against your clit and making you moan.
“You got a problem if I explore this pretty body of yours?” He asked, his lips still brushing yours when he spoke. “Because fuck, baby, seems like a sin to not touch every goddamn inch of you.”
He rocked his thick, hard, still clothed cock against your core, as if to make his point, and took your responding moan as the yes it was. He trailed his lips slowly over your body, down your throat, your breast bone, your stomach, your navel. His nose brushed against you, his breath covering you in warm and needy pants. When he reached your underwear - the last thing still on your body - his fingers looped through the band before he paused, looking up at you over your stomach and between your breasts.
“You still with me, pretty girl?” He asked, mouth so close to your skin that the wetness of his lower lip had caught on your stomach. “Still good with this?”
“Yes, Joel, please,” you were practically squirming. He was so close to precisely where you needed him it seemed like you might melt with the want of him. “Fuck, please…”
“Fuck, you’re even prettier when you beg,” he said and started to pull your panties down over your hips. You lifted yourself up off the bed to help and it wasn’t long before you were naked below him. He knelt in front of you and took your knees in his hands, parting your thighs for him and groaning when he did.
“Goddamn,” he breathed, so quiet you weren’t sure you were meant to hear it or if he’d meant to say it out loud at all. “Just… fuck.”
He opened your legs enough to lay between them, settling with your thighs over his shoulders. His thumb traced a slow, tender path over your slit, brushing your clit and making you gasp when he did.
“Swear you’ve got the prettiest fucking pussy I’ve ever seen,” he said before he pressed his lips to your leaking hole. He moaned as he did and you couldn’t help but thrust against him once. He pulled back from you just a little, his nose barely touching your clit as he did. “Needy little pussy, too, huh?”
Your fingers knotted in the bedspread and Joel’s mouth found your clit, softly sucking the sensitive nub between his teeth to tease with his tongue. You fought the urge to rock your hips against his face, trying to remember that this man was practically a stranger, not a lover whose tastes you knew intimately. But that was hard to remember as he worked his way lower, his tongue slipping inside of you with a deep groan.
Joel ate you like you were a delicacy he longed to savor. He started slow, tasting and teasing you open, before delving deep like he couldn’t resist it, his thick tongue exploring and finding the soft and tender places inside you. His thumbs spread you open wide to him, his nose against your clit and you couldn’t stop yourself, you rolled your hips against him. He moaned into you and you forced your hips down on the bed, trying to clear your head enough to be still.
“Sorry,” you panted. “I didn’t mean to do that, you’re just… really fucking good at that.”
He stopped and pulled back from you enough to look up your body again, a frown on his face, your slick glistening on his beard in the light from the parking lot outside.
“You think I don’t want you fucking my face?” He asked. “Fuck, baby, I want nothing more than for you to take exactly what you need. Want you to make yourself come on my face, you understand?”
You swallowed and nodded.
“What are you going to do?” He asked, voice almost stern.
“Make myself come on your face?” You more asked than answered.
“Better sound more sure than that,” he said, fingers moving to your clit. You gasped and moaned at the contact. “Come on baby, what are you going to do? Say it. Own it.”
“Come on your face,” you panted. “Fuck, Joel… I’m going to come on your face, I’m going to make myself come on your face, please…”
“Good,” he said, going back to eating your pussy.
It was like he’d been holding back before but had nothing stopping him now. His tongue pressed deep, his nose nestled in your slit to nudge your clit, his arms looped over the thickness of your thighs to keep you open for him while also pressing the softness of you to the sides of his head. Your orgasm built quickly, the heat in you sinking to your core, everything inside you there going taut and tense. You were just on the edge of it, whimpering below his tongue and his touch when one hand left the warmth of your thigh and moved to your slit, his finger sliding inside you alongside his tongue. He pressed into the soft, tender place inside you that seemed to elude other men, finding it with an almost practiced ease and moaning when he did, sending the sparks of your climax shooting through you.
He groaned, needy, as he ate you through it, not letting up, not even for a second until your orgasm had subsided and your head was swimming.
“Fuck you feel amazing,” he pulled himself from you, sucking the finger that was inside you clean before wiping your slick from his beard while his other hand traced over the smooth softness of your inner thigh. “Should’ve asked this sooner but… please tell me you’ve got a damn condom. I wasn’t exactly lookin’ for this tonight, not until I saw you, so I’m not exactly prepared.”
“I do,” you propped yourself up on your elbows, trying to remember where the hell you left your suitcase in the dark. You spotted it on the dresser, thankfully still mostly organized since you’d arrived that afternoon. You nodded to it. “Suitcase, top zipper pouch inside the lid.”
He got one, the crinkle of foil strangely loud in the silence of the room.
“Here,” you sat up and reached for him as he came to stand between your legs at the edge of the bed. “Let me do it…”
He gave you the packet and you opened it before palming the condom, holding it tight in one hand while slipping the other into the open zipper of his jeans and into his underwear to find his thick, heavy cock.
You moaned as you wrapped your fingers around his length, hard as steel wrapped in silken skin, and you stroked him, just half way up his cock at first before going from root to tip. He was dripping there, his arousal making his head slick and wet. You brushed your thumb over his leaking tip, the smooth skin making your mouth water. You looked up at him through your eyelashes as you leaned forward to lick him before taking just the very end of his cock between your lips. You suckled at him gently, lapping up his precome, Joel’s breaths getting heavier and faster as you did, before you took him into your mouth. He moaned as you sucked him, his hand going to the back of your head and holding you against him, your nose brushing against the base of his stomach. You took his head into your throat and moaned around him as you sucked him, making him hiss in pleasure, his grip on your skull tightening.
“Fuck, woman,” he managed as you kept sucking him. “Gonna make me come if you keep doin’ that…”
You pulled back from him slowly, his hold on you easing as you did, until he slipped from your mouth, still slick with your spit.
“Should probably stop then,” you said, a little breathless. You took the condom - warm now from the heat of your hand - and put it over his head before rolling it over his thick shaft. You stroked him once, twice and leaned forward again, sucking his tip for a moment when it was in place and his head tipped back, staring at the ceiling as he groaned.
“Jesus,” he panted. “Fuck, you gonna let me inside that soft little pussy of yours or make me come in your mouth?”
You laughed once, needy and low, before pulling yourself backwards on the bed, Joel’s eyes hungry on your body as you went. He shucked his jeans and underwear off before crawling, finally naked, between your thighs. His head brushed against your sex and he took the base of his cock in his hand, trailing his tip up and down your dripping slit before spreading you open for him, your pussy swollen and tender as he did. He put his tip against your dripping entrance, pressed just the very end of him inside, barely opening you to him. His hands moved to your thighs, brushing over them to your knees before trailing back toward your center, his fingers splayed wide over you soft flesh.
“You ready, baby?” He asked, needy.
“Yes,” you breathed. You’d passed ready a long time ago. You were desperate now, aching and all but begging for him to take up every empty space inside your body.
“Good,” he pressed forward until his head was fully inside your tight channel and you both moaned with it, one of your hands finding the smooth skin of your breast and squeezing it. He groaned at the sight as he started fucking just the tip of him into you, rocking in and out of you in short, sharp bursts. “Fuck, there you go baby. Just like that.”
He started feeding you more of his cock then, driving further into you with each stroke until he fucked all the way into you, his hips flush to yours, his thick length stretching you open, the burn of him meshing with the heady pleasure of being so utterly full.
“Goddamn,” he breathed, his cock buried inside you totally. “This pussy… fuck me.”
One of his hands went from your thigh to over your hip coming to rest and the soft swell of the base of your stomach. He spread wide over your skin, his palm swallowing the space over where he was inside of you and pressing down, making you moan as the tight fullness inside you got more intense. His thumb stretched down toward your clit and he started working you there as he just held himself within you, making your cunt throb once around him. He groaned at the feeling.
“That’s right,” he said. “So full of this cock ain’t you baby? Taking me so damn well…”
He kept working your clit for a minute, not moving inside you, just pressing into your skin until you were practically writhing below his touch. He was so big, you were so full, the pleasure in your body so tight. It made your head spin.
“Joel,” your fingers scratched at the blankets. “I need you to move, please, please, please…”
“Please what, pretty girl?” His voice was dark, low.
“Please fuck me,” you begged. “Please, please fuck me, please…”
He drew back then, achingly slow at first, watching where his cock was pressing into you with a hungry look on his face, before thrusting back in, deep and firm.
This, you thought, was why you liked fucking older men. Joel knew what he was doing. He worked your body with expert skill, grinding his cock deep inside so his head pressed against the most sensitive parts of you, the thick drag of him making your back arch and toes curl. He kept rubbing your clit with his thumb, the pressure and pace keeping your pleasure building and building but never quite cascading over the edge.
He kept fucking into you that way until you were desperate, your whole being drawn tight and achy around his cock. He’d stopped watching where your bodies were joined and had moved to your face, his gaze drinking in your desperate little moans and the way your eyes would scrunch closed as you got so close to coming but didn’t quite make it, whimpering as your climax fell just out of reach yet again.
“Got you so tight and needy, hm?” He said, breathless. You just nodded, trying to rock your hips up against him but held in place by his hand on your stomach. “Why don’t you tell me what you need? Tell me exactly what it is you need.”
“To come,” you whimpered. “Fuck, I need to come, you need to let me come, please let me come…”
“Think I’ve been keepin’ you on the edge too long?” He asked. “Think I should let this little pussy come? Let her just milk me dry?”
“Fuck, please,” you begged, not caring if you sounded pathetic. It’s not like you’d see this man again after tonight, anyway.
He took his thumb off your clit but before you had a chance to whimper in protest, he adjusted your legs to drive somehow deeper and leaned over you, pressing his bare skin to yours before kissing your neck, sucking and licking at the tender skin there as he fucked into you, making you whimper, your nails scrabbling over his back. His lips moved from your neck to your ear, his large hand coming to cup the crown of your head, his pace never relenting.
“Come for me,” he whispered, low and needy. “You can come, want you to come, want to feel you come. Just let go for me, just give in to me.”
His hips rocked against your clit, his cock buried so deep and you saw stars for a moment before you cried out, your orgasm hitting you hard after being on the edge of it for so long. It broke your whole body down, muscle clenching desperately, blood rushing, fingers clinging. You felt it everywhere, starting at your core and radiating out in hot, aching waves.
“Goddamn, that’s it,” he fucked you through it as your core fluttered over him. “Just keep comin’ for me, just like that, feeling so damn good baby just…”
He pressed deep as your orgasm started to fade and moaned, the sound going straight to your raw, fucked out cunt. The pulsing of his cock, in you to the root, rolled you into another orgasm, this one less intense but still making your pussy grip him close and tight as he spilled into the condom.
He collapsed on you for a moment as both of your climaxes eased, his chest heaving. Before his weight became too much, he adjusted, rising up enough to kiss you as he slid his softening cock from your body and falling flat on his back on the bed beside you.
“Damn,” you panted after a moment, staring up at the ceiling.
He laughed lightly beside you.
“Know the feelin’.”
You lay there next to each other, listening to each other as your breaths came back into a normal, steady cadence. Goosebumps started to pebble over your skin, the air cold as you were naked without his body on yours, the air conditioner below the window humming along.
You turned your head to look at him and he did the same.
“Should probably go…” his voice trailed off but he sounded reluctant. Or maybe you just hoped he did.
“You don’t have to,” you said, probably a little too quickly for a man you’d just met. Even in the dim light of the moon and the parking lot lights out your window, you could tell he raised his eyebrows. “I’m just… you can stay, if you want. It’s a big bed. Think we can manage it.”
“Wouldn’t want to impose…”
“You’re not,” you said. “You can leave, too, if you’d rather but… don’t feel like you have to rush out.”
He smiled a little.
“Then I’ll stay. I’d like to stay.”
You smiled back, that blissed out and relaxed feeling you had after you came settling over you.
“Good.”
The two of you settled far across the bed from each other at first but drifted quickly, until your head was on his chest and you were curved around his side as his arm wrapped around your shoulders, his fingers trailing up and down your arm until you fell asleep.
He was somehow even more beautiful in the light of day.
You realized it as the two of you went about the strange intimacy of getting ready for the day side by side with someone you didn’t know. He blinked sleep from his eyes when first woke up and stretched his back before getting out of bed, his curls haphazard and messy and his body soft and warm. He got dressed and ran his fingers through his hair, trying to tame it. You offered him your travel toothbrush as you got dressed and he watched you pull on your jeans as he leaned against the bathroom doorframe.
“Been a while since I’ve done this,” he said, a little hesitant.
“Just how long?” You asked, teasing as you pulled on your shirt.
“Longer than I want to admit,” he said, small smile making his cheek dimple. “Long enough that I don’t remember exactly how this is supposed to work but… I’d like to take you to breakfast. If you want.”
You smiled.
“Sure,” you said. “I’d like that.”
Joel walked back to the bar and picked up his truck before taking you to a diner not too far from your hotel. You laughed with him about menu typos and the questionable song choices coming from the speakers over greasy eggs and toast soaked in butter.
“Know we just met,” he said as you were on your fourth cup of coffee and you were both avoiding the fact that you’d have to leave this table and go your separate ways soon. The remains of your hashbrowns had long gone cold, ketchup smeared across the plate and you weren’t ready to say goodbye to him yet. “And that you’re in town for some family thing but… if you’re not busy tonight, would you want to come with me to this party? Buddy of mine is throwin’ in, supposed to be nice. Think he gave me a plus one in hopes I’d actually use it.”
“Damn,” you winced a bit. “I really wish I could but the thing I’m in town for is tonight.”
“Damn’s right,” he smiled a little. “Think you’d be my best shot for a good time at that thing.”
“Yeah, back at you for my thing,” you laughed.
“Here,” he pulled his phone from his pocket and unlocked it before handing it over. “Put your number in. Maybe we could still get together later…”
You took it but hesitated, thumb tapping on the side of his phone case.
He frowned.
“What?”
“I live hours away,” you said. “Is this really smart?”
He shrugged.
“Don’t really care if it’s smart or not. Just want to see you again. If you’ll let me.”
You smiled a little and shook your head before putting your number in his phone.
“There,” you said, handing it back over. “Let me know when you’re done with your thing. I can think of a few more ways to get some good use out of my hotel room.”
Two more cups of coffee later, Joel dropped you off at your hotel. You kissed him goodbye in the cabin of his truck, moaning against his mouth before pulling away.
“Alright, go before I come back in with you,” he said playfully, reaching across you to open your door.
You laughed.
“Don’t tempt me,” you got out and paused before closing your door, taking one last chance to look him over. “If we don’t see each other again… It was good meeting you.”
“Good meeting you, too,” he said. “But don’t worry. I’ll see you again.”
You went inside, looking back over your shoulder once you were in the lobby, Joel’s truck still sitting near the doors as he waited to make sure you were safely inside.
There was an odd sense of loss in you as you got ready for your parents’ big anniversary party. You hadn’t expected to meet anyone when on your trip back to your hometown, let alone someone you liked so much. You’d been single for a while, doing things alone didn’t really bother you. But now, you felt this tug of desire to have him getting ready beside you where you could help him with his tie and he could zip you into your dress.
But that was stupid. You knew it was stupid. Your job had taken you to Memphis and you liked it there. You weren’t in a rush to move back to your hometown. And Joel had a business here. It wasn’t going to happen. It’d be a lot easier in the long run if you just accepted that now.
You showed up early to the party, your older sister wanting help to get things set up in the tents outside.
“Who all is coming to this shindig anyway?” You asked as you put pictures of your parents out around a guest book near the entrance of the tent.
“Oh, you know,” your sister waved you off.
“Not really,” you said. She gave you a look. “What! I haven’t been home for a family party in… well, it’s been a minute.”
“Yeah, and I’ve been the one doing all the work to help with those for a while,” she said.
“And you’re definitely not bitter about that…”
“Not one bit,” she teased. “But the usual people. The closest neighbors, the aunts and uncles, Mom’s book club, church people, Dad’s friends…”
“Dad has friends?” You gaped at her. “Since when?”
“He’s had friends for years!”
“OK, he’s never had friends,” you said. “Where is he finding friends? Shit’s unnatural…”
“Don’t let them catch you saying shit,” she said. “And there are a few from work, one from this basketball league he joined…”
“Ew,” you crinkled your nose. Your sister laughed.
“Definitely not ew,” she said. “At least not the basketball friend one, he’s weirdly hot, it’s disturbing…”
“Well, there’s no accounting for taste, is there?” You teased.
“You’ll eat those words when you meet the guy,” she said. “Just wait.”
“Whatever you say,” you rolled your eyes, skeptical. You and your sister had never had the same taste in men, you didn’t see any reason for that to have changed.
But still, you were keeping an eye out for this mysterious hot friend of your father’s as people started to arrive for the party. Or trying to, anyway. You kept getting pulled away by distant relatives you hadn’t seen since your cousin’s wedding or to do a favor for your mom as she frantically rushed around trying to take care of everyone while also trying to have fun at the party that was being thrown in her honor.
Everything was in full swing when you heard your father call your name from across the large, increasingly full tent. He waved you over, leaning around a man he was talking to, and you worked your way around the dance floor, trying not to think about how much you’d like to have a date at this damn thing - how much you’d like to have Joel as your date at this damn thing - when you froze beside your dad. The man standing next to him was devastatingly familiar, even from behind. Tallest man in the room, broad shoulders, thick curls. Your heart beat faster.
“Hey honey,” your dad said, tugging you closer. “Want you to meet my friend. Joel, this is my youngest that I’ve told you so much about.”
He turned around, a beer bottle in his hand a smile on his face that fell the moment he saw you. Your dad was saying something else but you didn’t hear it, too busy staring at the man who had been inside you less than 24 hours earlier.
The man who had you thinking about what life alongside another person would be like.
The man who was apparently your father’s friend.
“Hi,” he said after your dad had stopped talking. You hadn’t noticed.
“Hi,” you said, still staring at him.
Fuck, you were in trouble.
A/N: Here's whatever this is. He's unhinged, I don't know what's happening to the Joels who live in my head lately but they're just going crazy up there. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it! Love you!

to be loved — carlos sainz
Tumblr media
carlos sainz x you — “i can take care of you. you won't need anyone but me.” requested by @dancininseptember masterlist
Tumblr media
The short stroll from your office to the apartment never really bothered you. In fact, you typically enjoyed the fresh air and the chance to enjoy the city you loved. But it was early February; rain was threatening the Spanish skies and the frost bitten breeze stung your already tear-filled eyes. It was a crappy end to an even shittier week, your energy wasted on people who didn’t deserve it.
You practically flung yourself through the door of the apartment and shed all remnants of the day – coat, beanie and scarf, all strewn haphazardly, and in that order, on the floor of your small entryway. It took every ounce of energy you had to kick off your heavy boots, each one hitting the wall much harder than you intended. Maybe it was an unconscious way for you to let out frustration, the scuff marks on the white wall a stark reminder of your last straw.
The smell of fresh bread and bolognese sauce hit you as you slunk down the hallway, your tummy grumbling on instinct. You hadn’t eaten since yesterday, a terrible habit you had fallen into lately and Carlos had noticed. He was home more during the cooler months, easily picking up on your little habits that both endeared and worried him. So he made sure, while he was close to you, that you came home to a warm meal every night – because looking after you was his calling in life.
“That smells incredible.”
Carlos briefly glanced over his shoulder and gave you a bright smile before turning down the stove and grabbing a washcloth to clean his hands. You loved him like this; soft and relaxed, in his element. The kitchen was his playground and you remember the sigh of relief that left your lungs when he told you he loved to cook on your first date, because you weren’t particularly gifted when it came to the pots and pans.
“Hope you’re hungry,” He sang, circling the island in the middle of the kitchen to say a proper hello to his beautiful girlfriend, “How was your day?”
A rigid sigh fell from your lips as you fell into his arms, the loving embrace triggering tears to spring to your eyes for the third time today. Carlos held you tight and brushed his hands down your back, comforting you through the sobs wracking your aching body.
“Ay, mi amor,” He soothed, “Breathe for me please.”
Carlos guided you through a couple of deep breaths, chests rising and falling together in synchronicity until your sobs subsided, air finally filling your lungs again. A tight squeeze around your waist brought you back to the man holding you in his arms, worried eyes searching yours for a sign that you were okay as you pulled back and gave him a soft smile.
“I’m okay, I’m sorry.” You sniffled, head shaking.
Carlos tutted as he thumbed away the trail of tears from your face, “Do not say sorry, my love. Talk to me…”
Anger replaced sadness as you told him about how your sister had completely disregarded your feelings for the millionth time, accusing you of only caring about yourself while she’s all alone and stressed about wedding planning. Carlos has managed to get you to sit up on the counter beside him while he finished dinner, but not before pouring you a glass of red wine to nurse while you purged all the negativity from your day.
“She called me a bitch and then uninvited us from the wedding, which by the way I didn’t want to go too to begin with,” You huffed, hands animatedly flying around while he tried to keep up with the drama.
“And all I said to her was that work has been stressful and that us trying for a baby hadn’t been… fruitful, I guess. She flipped out when I said that because her dickhead fiancé doesn’t want kids and she thinks she can change his mind…”
You took a sip of wine and noticed Carlos' eyes rolling like they always did when the topic of your sister came up. He was as sick of her shit as you were, unapologetically scoffing at her selfishness. Making you feel bad when all you needed was someone to confide in was one thing, but lashing out on you was something he couldn’t stand by and watch. He knew he couldn’t do anything right now; maybe he would make a stern phone call tomorrow once the dust had settled.
So instead of getting upset, he put down the wooden spoon coated in the most delicious sauce you had ever tasted and nestled himself between your swinging legs. His warm chocolate eyes stared into your soul as he planted his palms on your thighs, tethering himself to you.
“You know I can take care of you, mi vida,” He said, voice deep and barely above a whisper, “No matter the problem, you won't need anyone but me, I promise.”
For the first time in weeks, you felt your heart slow down and return to a normal rhythm as Carlos pressed a sweet kiss to your lips. You softly moaned in unison and gripped the grey shirt hanging loosely from his shoulders, pulling him in closer – not that he had any plan on going anywhere.
No, all he wanted was for his girl to feel heard and to be loved because all he needed was you.

Karaoke ver.
As the night progressed and the karaoke session entered its peak, Chan's energy seemed to escalate. With a mischievous glint in his eyes, he scrolled through the song list until he found it—Bruno Mars's signature tune, "Just the Way You Are."
A grin spread across Chan's face as he looked over at you, excitement dancing in his gaze. "Hey, guess what I'm going to sing next?"
You chuckled, already anticipating the song choice. "Let me guess, 'Just the Way You Are' by Bruno Mars?"
Chan's grin widened as he nodded enthusiastically. "You got it! It's my signature song, after all."
As the familiar melody filled the room, Chan's voice resonated with passion and emotion, capturing the essence of the heartfelt lyrics. With each note, his voice soared, carrying the sincerity and warmth of the song's message.
As Chan sang each part of the song, his eyes remained fixed on you, his voice carrying the weight of every heartfelt word.
"Her eyes, her eyes," he crooned, his gaze softening as he emphasized each syllable, "Make the stars look like they're not shinin'."
With each line, Chan's voice echoed with sincerity, his gaze never wavering as he continued, "Her hair, her hair, Falls perfectly without her tryin'."
As he sang his eyes seemed to convey a depth of emotion that resonated with the lyrics. "She's so beautiful, and I tell her every day," he sang, his voice filled with tenderness and affection.
But it was in the chorus that his gaze held the most intensity, as if every word was a silent declaration meant just for you. "When I see your face, There's not a thing that I would change," he sang, his eyes locked on yours, "Cause you're amazing, Just the way you are."
With a grateful smile and a nod of appreciation to the neon lights that had inadvertently concealed your blush, you leaned back, savoring the precious moments of your friendship with him.
As the final strains of the song melted into the air, Chan's gaze lingered, his eyes filled with an intensity that seemed to transcend the music. The room fell silent, as Chan hesitated, a flicker of emotion crossing his features.
Unable to contain the feelings that surged within him, Chan took a deep breath, his voice soft yet filled with conviction. "I... I couldn't hold it anymore," he admitted, his words carrying a weight of vulnerability.
With a tremor in his voice, Chan continued, his eyes never wavering from yours. "I know we've been through so much together, and... and I just need to say..." His words trailed off, lost in the intensity of the moment.
A swell of emotion rose within you, your heart pounding with anticipation. In the hush of the room, you could feel the weight of Chan's words hanging in the air, poised on the precipice of revelation.
And then, in a moment of clarity and courage, Chan spoke from the depths of his heart. "I care about you more than words can say. You mean everything to me, and I just needed you to know… I adore you"
In the intimate confines of the karaoke room, with the neon lights casting a soft glow around you, Chan's confession hung in the air like a delicate melody waiting to be embraced. The world outside faded away, leaving only the two of you, suspended in a moment of vulnerability and truth.
The tension between you intensified, the air crackling with unspoken emotion. And then, as if guided by an invisible force, you rose from your seat, drawn inexorably closer to him.
With each step, your heart pounded in your chest, the rhythm of anticipation matching the tempo of your shared desire. As you closed the distance between you, Chan's words faded into the background, replaced by the magnetic pull of your connection.
Gently, almost instinctively, you reached out, cupping Chan's face in your trembling hands. His gaze met yours, a flicker of vulnerability dancing in the depths of his eyes, mirroring the emotions that swirled within your own soul.
And then, without hesitation, you closed the remaining space between you, pressing your lips to his in a tender, passionate kiss. In that moment, the world fell away, leaving only the intoxicating sweetness of your shared embrace.
As your lips met, a surge of electricity coursed through your veins, igniting a fire that burned with an intensity you had never known. Chan responded in kind, his arms encircling you, drawing you closer until there was no space left between you.
In that timeless moment, the karaoke room faded into oblivion, its neon lights dimming in comparison to the brilliance of your love. The microphone slipped from Chan's grasp, forgotten amidst the overwhelming tide of emotion that consumed you.
Leaning back, breathless from the intensity of the moment, you whispered softly, "I adore you too," your words carrying the weight of sincerity and affection. With a tender smile, you closed the distance between you once more, sealing your declaration with another sweet kiss.
In that fleeting exchange, the depth of your emotions echoed in the gentle brush of your lips, a silent promise of devotion. It was a moment suspended in time, a testament to the bond that had blossomed between you and Chan, transcending words and defying explanation.
As you lingered in each other's embrace, the world outside faded away, leaving only the warmth of your shared affection to light the way forward.
His bedroom ver.
As Chan leaned back against a pile of pillows, he glanced at the ceiling, lost in thought. "So, what's been going on with you lately?"
You shrugged, propping yourself up on your elbows. "Oh, you know, the usual. Work, trying to find some time to relax in between."
He nodded, understandingly. "Yeah, it's been pretty hectic with the group too. We've got that comeback showcase next week, and then we're off to Japan for a mini-tour."
"That sounds intense," you remarked, fiddling with a loose thread on the carpet. "But exciting, too. I can't wait to see how everything turns out."
Chan grinned, his eyes lighting up. "Yeah, it's definitely going to be an adventure. By the way, have you heard about the new song we've been working on? It's going to blow everyone away."
You chuckled. "You say that about every song you guys make, but somehow, you always manage to deliver."
He laughed, running a hand through his hair. "Hey, you gotta have confidence, right?"
"Absolutely," you agreed, a smile playing at the corners of your lips. "Confidence is key."
"So, any exciting plans for after the tour?" you asked, breaking the silence.
Chan stretched his arms out above his head, considering your question. "Not really sure yet. Probably just some downtime with the members, catching up on sleep, maybe binge-watching a few shows."
"That sounds like a perfect way to recharge," you said, nodding in agreement. "You guys definitely deserve it after all the hard work."
He smiled gratefully. "Thanks. What about you? Any fun activities or trips planned?"
You shook your head. "Not really. Just hoping to catch up on some reading and maybe take a short trip to the countryside for some fresh air."
"That sounds nice," Chan said, his eyes brightening with enthusiasm. "Sometimes, the simplest things can be the most refreshing."
You smiled, appreciating his outlook on life. "Definitely. It's all about finding those little moments of peace and contentment."
As the conversation continued to flow effortlessly between the two of you, you couldn't help but feel grateful for Chan's friendship and the moments of calmness he brought into your life, even amidst the chaos of his own.
The comfortable silence enveloped you both, punctuated only by the soft tapping of fingers on screens as you scrolled through your phones. It was a familiar scene, one you had shared many times before.
You couldn't help but notice the peacefulness of the moment, contrasting with the lively chaos that often surrounded Chan and his fellow members.
You glanced over at Chan, his brow furrowed in concentration as he navigated through messages and notifications.
Despite the tranquility of the moment, you knew that silence wasn't something he often experienced, especially with his energetic bandmates always around.
As the minutes passed, the silence remained unbroken, yet the connection between you and Chan only grew stronger, a silent acknowledgment of the bond you shared.
And in that moment, surrounded by stillness, you felt grateful for the simple pleasure of each other's company.
You chuckled as you scrolled through TikTok, watching people confessing their feelings to each other in creative ways. Turning to Chan, you posed a playful question, "Hey, if you were to confess to someone, would you do it by singing a song?"
Chan looked up from his phone, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hmm, that's an interesting idea. I suppose it depends on the person and the situation."
You raised an eyebrow, intrigued by his response. "Oh? So, you're saying there's a chance you might serenade someone?"
He laughed, running a hand through his hair. "I mean, I'm not ruling it out. Singing can be a powerful way to express your feelings, you know?"
"True," you nodded, thinking about the heartfelt emotions that music could convey. "It could definitely leave a lasting impression."
Chan grinned, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Who knows, maybe one day you'll see me on TikTok, belting out a love song for someone special."
You chuckled, imagining Chan's smooth vocals serenading an unsuspecting recipient. "I'll keep an eye out for that, then."
As the conversation veered into playful banter, you couldn't help but appreciate Chan's lighthearted demeanor and his willingness to embrace romantic gestures, even if they involved a bit of singing.
Feeling Chan's gaze lingering on you, you tried to focus on your phone screen, scrolling through the endless stream of content. Despite the silence between you, his presence felt palpable, a gentle weight in the room.
Trying to maintain your composure, you pretended to be engrossed in whatever was on your phone, hoping to deflect any attention his way. But deep down, you couldn't help but wonder what was on his mind, what thoughts were swirling behind those piercing eyes.
The seconds ticked by, each one filled with an unspoken tension that hung in the air. You could feel the urge to look up, to meet his gaze, but something held you back, a fear of what you might find there.
In the quiet of the room, the only sound was the soft hum of the air conditioner, a steady rhythm that underscored the awkwardness of the moment. It was as if time itself had slowed down, stretching the silence into an eternity.
Finally, unable to bear the weight of the unspoken, you mustered the courage to glance up, meeting Chan's eyes with a hesitant smile. And in that fleeting moment, you found solace in the familiarity of his gaze, a silent understanding that bridged the distance between you.
With a shared small smile, the tension dissipated, replaced by a sense of ease that washed over you like a gentle tide. And as you returned to your phone, the silence no longer felt suffocating, but comforting, a reminder of the unspoken bond that bound you and Chan together.
As you thought silence would continue, Chan's melodic voice filled the room, softly crooning the lyrics of "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars, you felt a rush of warmth spread through you. His gentle rendition of the song enveloped you like a soothing embrace, drawing you in closer with each heartfelt note.
You turned to look at him, your gaze locking with his, as if caught in a spell woven by the power of music. His eyes sparkled with sincerity, his voice carrying a depth of emotion that resonated deep within your soul.
With a tender gesture, Chan reached out and delicately tucked a stray strand of hair behind your ear, his touch sending shivers down your spine. It was a simple yet intimate gesture, one that spoke volumes without the need for words.
"And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while," Chan sang softly, his voice filled with warmth and affection. "Cause girl, you're amazing just the way you are."
His words hung in the air, lingering like a sweet melody, as if painting a portrait of admiration and adoration. In that moment, surrounded by the gentle strains of the song.
As the final notes of the song faded into the silence, you remained locked in a wordless exchange, the air tinged with an unspoken understanding. And in Chan's eyes, you found a reflection of your own worth and beauty, a reminder that you were truly loved just the way you are.
"Wow, if you serenade your crush like that, they'll be as smitten with you as I am right now," you joked softly, a smile playing on your lips.
Chan's eyes sparkled with amusement as he replied, "Well, I'm glad I've had that effect on you."
In that moment, something shifted within you, a realization dawning like a gentle sunrise. Before you could articulate your thoughts, Chan leaned in, his lips meeting yours in a tender, lingering kiss.
Time seemed to stand still as the world faded away, leaving only the warmth of Chan's touch and the softness of his lips against yours. It was a moment suspended in time, a silent promise of something more, something deeper than words could convey.
As he pulled back, you were left breathless, your heart racing with a mixture of surprise and longing. In Chan's gaze, you saw a reflection of your own feelings mirrored back at you, a silent affirmation of the connection between you.
Your hand instinctively reached for Chan's cheek, his warmth against your palm grounding you in the reality of the moment. He leaned into your touch, his eyes closing in a silent surrender to the emotions swirling between you.
As you drew closer, your breath mingling with his, you whispered softly, "Please, tell me this isn't a prank?"
Chan's eyes fluttered open, his gaze locking with yours in a silent vow. "It's not a prank," he murmured, his voice filled with sincerity. "I've never been more serious about anything in my life."
His words hung in the air, a solemn declaration of his feelings, his intentions laid bare before you. In that fragile moment, doubt melted away, leaving only the undeniable truth of your connection.
With a gentle resolve, you closed the distance between you, your lips meeting again in a tender embrace. It was a kiss filled with promise, a silent vow to explore the depths of this newfound love together.
And as you melted into each other's embrace, the world faded away, leaving only the sweet symphony of your beating hearts, a testament to the magic of love found in the most unexpected places.
Chan's arms wrapped around you, drawing you closer to his body. The world around you faded into insignificance as you melted into each other's embrace, lost in the warmth of the moment.
The softness of his lips against yours sent waves of warmth cascading through you, igniting a fire that burned brighter with each passing moment.
The forgotten phones lay untouched, a testament to the magnetic pull of your connection, drawing you closer together on the floor of his bedroom. In that intimate space, time seemed to stand still, each heartbeat echoing the rhythm of your shared passion.
Wrapped in each other's arms, you surrendered to the sweet surrender of the moment, lost in a world where only the two of you existed. And as you lay there, bodies entwined and hearts intertwined, you knew that this was just the beginning of a love story waiting to unfold.

SWAY WITH ME…
— a date with alastor didn’t go as he had planned… but, it wasn’t that bad after all…
hi!!! i saw this idea from @callmechito and, i didnt make the idea exactly the way specified. but, i really wanted to try :)!! it is late at night though, so i did not make it as long as i wanted it to be (sorry if it’s rushed!!)
Tumblr media
acid rain. perhaps it would’ve been wiser to check the 666 news weather report before scheduling your date…
you stood by the window of your hotel room, wearing what you’d call your sunday’s bests. thousands of sinners’ skins burning on impact from the acidic rain pouring outside.
knock!
“s/o, are you decent? may i come in?” a static voice came from the other side of the door. “uuh, yeah! come in” you called back to him as he gently opened the door.
and on the other side of the door, you saw a different side of alastor that had never been seen before; a smitten yet small smile drawn on his face, wearing a red coat, as per usual (though this time, his coat is not tattered), and his big doe eyes shyly looking at the outfit you’d chosen for your proposed date.
alastor let out a quiet sigh, an overwhelming feeling filling his chest, making it hard to breath. “my dear! well, aren’t you stunning? i might just drop dead right now, haha!” alastor laughed, a laugh track joining along. “haha… it’s a shame that we have to cancel our date…” you smiled bittersweetly, quite honestly looking forward to the date. it must have been a millennia since your last date, not to mention how it is with alastor, hell’s most eligible bachelors if i do say so myself…
“well, who said we had to cancel our date?” he tilted his head. “i’d think the rain outside would speak for itself…” you muttered out. “we could just have our date here at the hotel! we could simply move the date to my hotel room, would you like that?” his fingers tapped against his staff.
“su-“”brilliant! let’s make haste now!” he smiled gleefully, taking his hand in yours and shadow teleporting you to his hotel room— the warm red tones of the hotel harshly contrasting with the cool blue and green tones of the forest on the other side.
alastor took your fingers in his hand and gently guided you to a table with two seats. he pulled one out and helped you into the chair. “just sit tight now, darling. i’ll have niffty whip something up for us.” he smiled before leaving the room.
minutes later, alastor came back— two delectable dishes in hand. he placed one in front of you before sitting down himself and digging in.
the two of you had spent your dinner getting to know each other better (more like just him getting to know you better…), talking about whatever came to mind.
not for one second had you ever doubted alastor tonight. everything coming from his beautifully thin lips had sounded as genuine as ever.
after dinner had ended, you wiped your mouth with the napkin on your lap. “alastor, i had a really good time…” you grinned awkwardly, blood rushing to your face. “i think i must go now, i have a busy day tomorrow…” you frowned slightly before standing up to leave.
“nonsense! come, dance with me for a while, would you?” he teasingly pleaded, placing a hand on your shoulder. you hesitated for a while, considering the consequences of staying up an extra few minutes. “ahh… i guess it couldn’t hurt..” you smiled as alastor walked to his vinyl record played, placing the needle onto the grooves of the CD.
as alastor placed a hand on your shoulder and hip, sway by michael bublé began playing. you copied his actions, placing your own hands on his hip and shoulder as the two of you began dancing to the soft music, alastor’s soft voice singing along to the tune.
you soaked in the soft sight of the scary radio demon, as docile as a doe. you rested the side of your head against alastor’s chest, feeling every vibration as he sang. alastor sighed softly, all of this simply being too much for him to act calmly.
all of these emotions were too much, alastor needed a way to release them… he took his hand off of your shoulder before gently gripping your chin. he leaned down a bit before kissing you.
his lips smiled into the kiss, the hand on your hip snaking up to cup your cheek.
the kiss lasted quite long before he finally pulled away, a proud yet mischievous grin decorating his handsome face.
alastor leaned down, his mouth hovering over your ear. “would you like to know something, gorgeous?” he whispered, the hand on your chin resting once more on your shoulder. “i’d say i’m the luckiest man in hell right now, on a date with a treasure like you. i might just die, again!” he laughed. though, despite his joke— when he had said that, the radio filter on his voice was gone, letting you hear his true voice.
you looked up to meet his careful gaze as you grinned lovingly “i had a marvelous time with you… you make me happy that… im in hell.” you laughed.
as the song stopped, alastor paused, thinking to himself quietly. he dropped your hand before cupping your back. “you said you must leave, didn’t you? i wouldn’t want to be the reason you’re groggy in the morning!” he smiled, walking you over to your hotel room, just a few ways down.
“i did have an amazing night with you, my dear. i hope we could do this again, perhaps again during an acid rain shower?” he teased while laughing. a calm composure remaining on his face.
and despite that poker face, he was in the best terms; burning on the inside out. his longing for you filling all of his senses. he must stay gentlemanly though… so, for now, he’ll cherish the beautiful date he had with you tonight.

Plot: Read to find out :) Characters: Riddle Rosehearts, Leona Kingscholar, Azul Ashengrotto, Kalim Al' Asim, Vil Schoenheit, Idia Shroud, and Malleus Draconia + special platonic guest Warnings: Mentions of depressive themes and anxiety. Spoilers for TW main story. A/N: This is a doosy. I hope you like it. It might be one of my favorite works to date.
Difficult to notice, yet deadly if ignored. The smudge of black on Grim's magestone went unnoticed by many as the days at Night Raven College passed. Each as chaotic and entertaining to Grim as the last. Over time the spot grew. A dot turned into a speck, and the speck soon turned into a splotch. Which then became a streak, and finally a stain that screamed "Look at me! Notice Me! I am here!". It remained unseen, until an eerie sensation overtook our feline friend. One that sparked panic as his ability to cast magic dwindled - as if whatever was maintaining the stone was on the cusp of breaking.
By then it was too late.
Grim had no time to panic or think about what caused his magestone to sour. Neither did the Ramshackle prefect or any other student at Night Raven College.
Funny enough. The stress of yet another possible overblot occurring was enough for the last inch of purple to be overcome by darkness. Grim ran away from his friends in a panicked frenzy, afraid that they'll be hurt and scared for what pain he would feel. Arms yanked the school's magicless tactician out of harm's way - the prefect had solved many cases and would do so successfully again. They would save him.
Tension tight enough to suffocate hung in the air as students either prepared for battle or fled. All eyes watching Grim as he desperately tried to shake the blot out of his stone; yet, he never turned. No monster bleeding black ooze was in sight. Just a trembling cat.
Mass confusion overtook all as they looked between each other for answers.
"Looking for me?"
A monotone voice echoed from beyond the barricade of students. A voice many spoke to on a daily basis that normally sang with snarky quips and lovable anecdotes. Students barreled away from its direction as black ooze overtook the ground beneath them.
Screams fell to deaf ears as the the overblot manifestation crawled up their legs and encased those fleeing in a midnight chrysalis. Any who tried to fight received the same fate. It toyed with them mercilessly until they resigned themselves to their insignificance.
"Please stop running. It makes this much more difficult on me...but then again, when did that ever matter?"
Compared to other overblots, the prefect held no shadow. No presence. They stood idle - like a husk - as the blot wreaked havoc in their place. Lifeless eyes scoured a crowd of pleas and cries with no signs of feeling or mercy. Like they were a puppet.
Their eyes met his, and momentarily the darkness ceased its spread. As some students took the chance to run in the distance - they reach out a hand. His name stutters from their lips as a pitch-black tear fell to the floor.
"Riddle"
He gasps when you say his name. For a moment Riddle is caught off guard, and it's enough time for the ooze to begin crawling up his calf. His own magestone suffered greatly from trying to keep the dark magic at bay while aiding nearby students in their escape.
It's light flickers in his hand as he tries desperately to cast another warding spell. Alas, it was out of mana.
And Riddle is out of time.
He thought of his own overblot on occasion. Some parts were foggy, and others he could remember vividly enough to believe he was still there. Trapped in his own self-loathing. Scared. Angry. Vengeful.
Then there was you. Strong. Independent. Respected. You had merely been at his school for a few weeks and somehow managed to take charge of situations he could not begin to fathom. You saved him when he did not know he needed to be saved. Riddle envied it at the time. Wanted the ability to guide others and still be loved by them - like you.
At some point he no longer wanted to become you. He wanted to be with you. He was proud of your intelligence and always made sure you were aware that it was superior to many he knew.
He wonders what you are feeling. If you are aware like he was, or if you are in a slumber like the students you have captured. At least, he hopes that is what happened to them and you have not done any 'permanent' harm.
Riddle stops struggling when the ooze reaches his waist. He needs a new approach...your approach.
"MC...MC can you hear me?! You need to fight it! There is no logic in mass hysteria!," he screams above the chaos with clenched fists. Your eyes meet once again and Riddle sighs in relief. He may have a chance -
"I am not logical," you say calmly, and return to watching the chaos, "and I never want to be,"
The ooze stretches over his arms and in the distance he sees the remnants of his dorm succumb to the blot. His frustration overpowers his fleeting confusion at your words. Now red contrasts to black, as his face burns in anger.
"Clearly so! If you're going to behave so childishly!"
"Maybe. It will be over soon. Logic is unnecessary when there is nothing,"
"What's wrong with you?! Suddenly doing all this - what example are you setting for other students? You were a role-model to - "
"None. I was a role-model to none," the ooze halts abruptly at the top of Riddles neck and he strains his head away from it. You glare at him with clenched teeth, "I did not ask for their expectations. Since I cannot escape them or this place...I will be rid of them permanently,"
Your hands fly to fist at your head and your breaths become ragged. Riddle found the land mine he was looking for...and he greatly disliked the familiarity.
"Expectations are given to people worthy. You may not agree, but it is the truth. Every expectation you receive is determined by a bar that you have put into place. You are in control MC. You have always been in control," Riddle releases a breath as the ooze begins to recede to his shoulders.
You go quiet, and gaze down at the ink staining your hands in terror, "I failed everyone. I failed you," you cry, "I'm so so sorry,"
The ink recedes to Riddle's feet and he sprints to your side. He kneels and takes your hands in his. Around you, students escape as the blot begins to fade away.
"If anyone needs to apologize...it is I. Let it be known that I expect nothing of you other than your happiness. Even then, it is and always will be your choice..."
"Leona"
Leona tenses in place and his ears twitch. His guard is still on high alert, but his heart thrums in his chest at record breaking pace. For a brief moment, he heard your voice. Not the distorted mutilation coming from the blot...but your voice.
Weak. Fragile. Suffering.
His legs act alongside his head and Leona dodges the spike of ooze aimed for his wrist. His quick reflexes protect him from becoming trapped in whatever cocoon you were encasing other students in.
His first instinct is to use King's Roar...but doing so would hurt you in the process. There's no doubt in his mind that it's why you called for him. That...and one other reason. He knows you can handle it. You're strong. He's pointed out your admirable strength for a human on many occasions. From nearly fist-fighting a groom-seeking ghost, keeping up with his spell drive practices, lugging him across campus, to even outrunning the leech twins every other hour - your ability to take a hit was well known.
Even now. Leona did not predict that you could overblot, but your form does not surprise him in the slightest. If anyone was to reek with such raw power, it would be the one person on campus surviving through pure grit. Leona may have underestimated you in the beginning, but he knows better now.
"If you don't stop then I have no choice but to fight you! Is that what you want?! Because I don’t hold back. Not for you - not for anyone,” he threatens, yet it reaches no one. You don’t spare Leona a glace when he aims his wand at you, “Never thought you’d fall like this, prefect. Tsk. What a disappointment,”
Leona shoots a burst of magical energy your way, but it meets a wall of ooze. It molds around you in a protective barrier, blocking any attack and keeping others at a distance.
Brute force would not work. Yet it was all Leona could do in a situation with no tactical edge. No insult or snarky joke rewarded him with a response. You were merely toying with him - and it made him simmer in rage. As his mana quickly depletes, he begins to believe that ‘saving’ you is a lost cause.
“There was nowhere to ‘fall’ from. Gravity holds us in our place. You of all people should know this, Leona,” you lift an arm, and suddenly he’s pinned down and kneeling on the ground.
“The hell are you talking about?! You’ve gone insane - look at this place,”
“It’s not fun to live in denial Leona. Aren’t you tired of fighting a 'lost cause'? I know that I am…”
You approach and kneel down in front of him at eye level. A macabre underlaying in your movements as you sway in the sea of black - and it clicks.
Leona found his edge…and it burns. His stomach lurches knowing what he has to do. With all his strength he pulls his remaining mana to rip his arms from the ooze and grab your shoulders. Tightly. His claws dig into your skin and draw crimson.
“I will never give up,” he grits, “but I can reevaluate. I might not be first born but I’ll be damned if that stops me from getting what I want…and I was right to peg you an idiot if you're thinking otherwise,”
Your eyes narrow at his words, and suddenly every ounce of darkness in the area is pointed like sharp needles at Leona.
“Too bad you’ll die before-“
“Sure, like you have the gull to kill me? You haven’t given up either,” Leona speaks out confidently, “stronger than I am. You would never kill someone for personal gain…and you know it. Why else have you come this far, huh? To play mage? No, you’re doing it to live so quit throwing a fucking tantrum and grow up. Whatever it is that you want to do…,” he stands abruptly and you quickly pull the needles away - proving his point and he smirks.
“I’ll help you to do it, alright. So let everything go and only look my way,”
And you do. Leona catches you just as your consciousness gives out and all the miasma from the area slowly fades away. Not a scratch or sign of distress in sight….as if everything was a bad dream that NRC just awoke from. Leona picks you up and escapes the area quickly. Health now, theorizing after.
"Azul"
A shiver snakes down Azul's spine. Your voice hangs still in the air - clouding his mind and his eyes sting as he forgets to blink. He never pictured you begging. Not like the poor unfortunate souls he would ensnare with his contracts. Azul has heard you yell, he's seen you jump when startled and seen the color drain from your face when being scolded.
Yet, never desperate. Never terrified.
He doesn't know what to do. His magic is useless. Azul is useless...in the face of this. You.
Beautiful.
Even now. He finds you astonishing. The way you stand tall in a sea of black. He only sees you from behind yet even that feels like a forbidden pleasure. The miasma radiates from you like ocean waves on a calm evening. Your movements are fluid as you fall in sync with their flow and to Azul it's like you are dancing. Like an angelfish in the depths of the sea...you call to him.
Something cold and slimy wraps around his wrist in Azul's moment of weakness. It yanks him down and he's nearly dragged into a cocoon of black - almost. Luckily Professor Vargas is stronger. He grabs Azul by the shoulder and rips him out of the trap before demolishing it. Vargas' expression is steel as the blot retreats towards it's source...
You are reaching out in Azul's direction one moment, and in the next Vargas is standing protectively in front of him - blocking you from sight.
His professor yells, "Enough MC, fight me head on! I will protect these students with my-" and is blasted away before Azul can offer assistance. Just as he began to comprehend the situation...you overtook him once again.
A gust of air whips by and he squints. When his eyes open, you're a hairs length away from Azul's face - one move and your noses will touch.
Your hollow gaze bores into him, "Even in chaos, you won't look me in the eye. Your attention is always elsewhere," and his heart shudders.
He speaks without thinking, "My attention is never not on you," and he's completely forgotten about his likely injured teacher.
"Lies,"
"Truths," he breaths, "Even now. You are all I see," and he means it.
"You only look because I am now worthwhile," one of your hands slides up his shoulder and wraps around his bowtie, "I now have power to offer you. Would you like to make a contract?"
What was happening to him? Why...were the things he couldn't say days before slipping from his lips like butter.
His heart pounds at the offer. The power of an overblot at the reach of his fingertips...it's never been done before. If successful it would open doorways of new magical discoveries. Everyone would envy him-
and yet
'Azul,' your plea from earlier surfaces in his memory.
An offer has never disgusted him more. He cannot resist gagging at the thought..."Not on my life," he spits out in a haste.
You give no reaction to his distaste - or so he would think, if thick blot did not begin to curl between your bodies. Azul ignores the way it grips his clothes and steels himself.
"You do not need a contract to have me. You have always been - and will continue to be - my strength," he reaches to gently grab the hand around his neck, "this form is but a piece of you, yet I still cannot look away. You are everything,"
Insecurity. He doesn't know what could breed such a painful emotion in you - but from the way the world crumbles he must have assumed correctly.
You look away as the air begins to clear, and crystal tears prick the corners of your eyes.
Azul lifts his hands to your cheeks and brushes them away with his thumbs.
Beautiful.
"Kalim"
Quick on his feet, Kalim summons Oasis Maker to flush out some of the toxic mist spreading across the area. He falls into action like clockwork, guiding students out of the area and serving as a distraction until higher mages arrive. He is positive that the situation will be handled - except now you are not there to solve it.
Which isn't your fault. None of this is.
If anything, it's Kalim's fault. Which means he needs to work extra hard so that you don't blame yourself for anything. Which he knows you will do.
Because you're honest.
Which is something many people say about Kalim himself - they call it his fault. His 'defect'.
They're half-right. Kalim's honesty is not the same as yours. He chooses positivity and openness. You? It comes naturally. In ways that don't require a smile and energetic outlook on life. You are someone Kalim never has to second guess with - and that is a gift.
Your honesty is what Kalim loves the most about you. Your blunt nature and ability to stick with your gut. It is one of your biggest strengths...and he does not want you to lose it.
The way you called for him - knowing. You knew this overblot was coming yet said nothing. There was nothing that could have been done to stop it. Whatever you have buried beneath the surface - Kalim understands.
This image of you. This 'blemish'. It is your honesty. It’s your grimace every time someone comments on your “fortune” for getting free enrollment. It’s your relief when a harsh exam is over with, or when you lay in bed after a long day. Your excitement when Kalim takes you on a particularly adventurous ride on his flying carpet…your despair, when someone you care about is in trouble. It’s all of that wrapped in a bundle and put on display for everyone to see.
Kalim is scared. Not of you - but for you, because this emotionless monster wreaking havoc is what you perceive yourself as.
He feels guilty for not looking your way more than once. For leaving you to needlessly fight with the people you care about…but as the last student flees to safety he feels relief.
As he turns to face you with a grin - he feels happiness.
“Go on. Everyone’s gone now MC! Let it out!”
You turn away from fighting with your close friends. Ace and Deuce are weathered to dust and collapse on the floor. Rain still pours from Kalim’s signature spell and it mixes with the black miasma in puddles on the ground.
The two boys shout for Kalim to run - that you won’t see reason. He laughs and tells them not to worry before running towards you.
“Everyone’s safe now…you don’t have to worry anymore,” he says, and takes off his cardigan to lay over your shoulders. He adjusts it with a gentle smile and lifts his hand to wipe off a smear of ink from your cheek, “I hope you don’t catch a cold. I’ll take care of you, but I bet that wouldn’t be fun for you,”
“I was not worried,” you say, unblinking as he continues to fiddle with your garments, “the cold is irrelevant. As are you - flee you yellow pest,”
“Yes, you were,”
“No,”
“Yup!”
You slightly narrow your eyebrows at him, “and what makes you so certain?”
Your hand extends to the side at that moment, and ink lifts to encase the exhausted first years up to their necks, “would you like to join them?”
Kalim clutches the jacket tighter and ignores the panicked yapping of his friends.
“If that would make you happy, then sure! Take me! Just let them go…I don’t want you to be upset over this later,”
“And what makes you sure that there’s going to be a ‘later’?” You ask.
“Well…,” Kalim looks at his friends over your shoulder and then back to you, “because you know it too. Otherwise I’d be gone right now and so would everyone else. Deep down you’re getting ready to let go! And when you do we’ll all be ready to help you,”
Kalim pulls you into a tight hug. His arms wound over your shoulders and shield you from the rain above. A moment passes, and he feels your arms reach up around his back. Not once during the entire encounter did the ooze attack him. Even in a slumber of darkness you still held onto yourself. Just like Kalim knew you would.
“You really are a naïve idiot,” your voice - now full of sorrow - whispers in is ear, “I could have killed you,”
He hugs you tighter, “you could have, and I probably would have let you haha. Next time let’s talk - I’ll always be here for you,”
“I know. You always are,”
"Vil"
An explosion of grime blackens his uniform in a matter of seconds. It covers Vil from head to toe - soaking his hair, dampening his cape, and filling his boots. As students slip across the floor in an attempt to flee, Vil is halted in place by the sickening feeling of filth overtaking him.
Ever calm in the face of chaos, he pulls out a handkerchief to clean himself. The scene before him utterly dull and disinteresting.
"I expected more. Is this all that results from your spite?...honestly, prefect. At least put in some effort beyond this putrid slime,"
And he has you in his clutches. As he tosses the handkerchief over his shoulder, your head snaps robotically in his direction.
He eyes rake over you callously. Nit picking every little 'imperfection', from the bags underneath your eyes to the veins bulging out of your neck from strain. Vil's heels click against the ground as he approaches. Magic trickles from his fingertips and pushes away the barrier of blot that you've created. Effortlessly, he passes through it all.
At your feet kneels a new freshman from his dorm. A young man eyes him with a mix of fear and relief. Vil notes his shredded uniform and eyes bloodshot from crying - likely from begging for mercy.
He lifts his chin at the lad, "Run or fight. Pick now, Pomefiore students do not grovel," and the boy wastes no time escaping with a strained 'thank you'.
"He was not yours to free," your voice echoes. Airy and meaningless to Vil's ears and he watches as ooze captures the boy in a cocoon before he makes it ten paces away.
"It's hypocritical," Vil chuckles, "that you trap them like insects...or is it a metaphor? Do you feel caged, prefect?"
Vil raises a singular eyebrow, taunting you to respond. You do not, yet he expected such due to this 'artificial' state you've taken on.
"Of course you do. I certainly would...although I thought you more determined than resorting to an overblot's power to free yourself,"
Around Vil more people fall prey to your traps. Neither brute force or trickery allows them to leave the miasma's boarder, and he cannot help but feel a smidge of awe at the sight. To bottle the essence into a potion...it would be marvelous. The miracle of a magicless producing an overblot is astounding on it's own, yet the entire scenario is remarkable.
You are remarkable.
Arrows soar and he watches as Rook falls. The hunter turned prey - Rook becomes a bird locked away in a cage. Epel is not far behind him. A string of uncouth curses leaving the boy's lips when he looses his footing to the darkness.
Vil tuts, "If only I could make Epel submit so easily during mannerism lessons...perhaps I can learn from you yet MC,"
"Will you ever cease speaking?"
"First, rude," he sighs, "second, why not force me? People in an overblot state normally do not entertain chatter...what makes you special?"
You eye him, "I don't need to immobilize what's already broken," and he smirks. Of course you would say that of all things. Vil knows you better than you know yourself...he's observed up close and at a distance. Vil knows that you have doubts in him, in the school, in your friends, and in yourself the most.
but you cut no corners. Your dedication to being the 'perfect prefect' is something often admired...to where even your overblotted form is unconsciously maintaining it. Had you not kidnapped half the school in goo prison - none likely would notice an overblot walked the halls.
Until you spoke, at least. This gravelly undertone does not suit you...or does it?
"You may be correct," Vil raises a hand to his chin and pretends to think, "but you are not broken MC. Merely misguided. Your sheer determination has given you the strength to persevere, and I was convinced that it would be enough. I thought you and I to be similar,"
He reaches out and lays a steady hand on your shoulder. You look up at him through your eyelashes, and he takes it as a sign to reach down and hold your hand. His delicate fingers intertwine with yours.
"I was wrong. You are capable of more than brute force - so cage me. Otherwise you will have to hear my ramblings for all eternity. You won't, because you are more determined than I was to break through this spell...but go on and try. You have my cooperation,"
Your hand tightens around Vil's and for the first time since coming to your side - emotion is clear on your face.
Thick tears stream down your cheeks and Vil breaths out in relief.
"You're right...ugh, why are you always right ya pompous asshole," you say and bring his fingers to your forehead. A faint blush dusts Vil's cheeks and he smiles.
"I am the fairest, after all. My voice was bound to reach you eventually, my dear"
"Idia"
Oh no. Nononononon this can’t be happening. Not them. Anyone but them.
Great seven. He must have misheard amongst the screams or the reception in his dorm must have bugged out.
Whichever it is, Idia panics and yanks his earphones off of his head. Multiple monitors within his room show the catastrophe playing out from different angles. At the center is his main screen, which is black despite the video signal still being active. The moment his name left your lips a harpoon of blot shot at his tablet . Then there was nothing.
What the hell just happened? Idia thinks, a cold sweat dripping down his spine. His hair flares an anxious orange as he chews on his nails. The last thing he saw before dark was your face - void of expression yet morphed in pain. Then there was Ortho. His beloved little brother was trying to reach his tablet before everything snapped.
“Ah! What is this - the final boss?! Some kind of plot twist?! We think it’s all over just for a normie to blot? This is ridiculous-“
Despite the dark - Idia can hear. Muffled rustling echoes from the headset on the floor as he paces back and forth in his room. He knew there was a reason he felt so energized when you were around! Ortho said it was because he was …eugh…feeling things - but you were practically smothering him with your blot.
To energize Idia of all people…it must be strong. How the hell is he supposed to save you from that? No way!
"Big brother…please! We….need you!….MC….needs you!" Ortho's voice fades in and out but Idia can hear him clear enough. He halts in his tracks and clutches his head from stress. In one hand, he could stay in his room and let someone else handle you. In the other, he could leave the safety of his bedroom like an absolute idiot and try something. Anything - and pray it works.
He grabs a pillow and screams various curses into it. His hair flairs up into blood red from frustration and angry tears prick his eyes.
Curse him for being a total coward. Courage…bravery…they were your traits - not his. You stopped so many others and saved them - even him! A worthless wimp. You found a way and now he gets to live happily with his brother.
And despite it Idia can’t bring himself to return the favor. Who asked you to help him in the first place anyway!? Now he has a debt and … ugh, no. That’s not it. This isn’t about a debt and never was.
“Please! You’re the only one,” Ortho yells again and Idia can hear the sound of a battle. He looks at the security cameras to see blot covering the main building and slowly inching it’s way outwards. Not to long and it would reach him anyways…
He grabs his wand along with his uniform jacket, slips on his boots, and finds another one of his tablets. What’s he going to do? - Idia has a plan but it’s definitely something you’d take to a lvl 10 raid with friends and not a lvl 100 boss.
His heart pounds in his chest as he reaches the blot boarder. It flocks to him and he grimaces in disgust before barreling through - flickering through cctv feed on his tablet and making sure Ortho can stave you off until he arrives.
Ortho does, but the moment Idia enters the scene his brother falters. He’s swallowed up by blot right at the last second and Idia has no time to be frightened. The campus had become a sea of black cocoons by the time he arrived…and amidst them all you stood in silence. As if you were waiting for the chosen challenger…
“M-MC? What are y-you doing?! E-everyone’s d-d-dead?!”
“Not dead. Sleeping. Soon I will join them…as will you, Idia,” you say, and one of the cocoons opens to reveal his broken tablet. Idia’s hands shake when he realizes that there is no one else left.
It was up to him to save you. To save everyone and himself.
You begin to walk towards him and Idia takes steps back as you approach.
“Are you afraid of me, Idia? Oh - who am I kidding…you always have been. Worry not. There is nothing to be scared of here,”
The words you speak would normally comfort him - perhaps even leave Idia flustered and feeling protected.
But they’re cold. They might come from your lips but they lack meaning behind them and he can’t hear your voice. The way you say Idia’s name makes him shriek and hold his wand defensively.
He lets out a shaky breath, “I might be too dysfunctional for many things - but I’ve never been bested by a normie. Give back my brother!”
Idia quickly casts a spell -- and it hits! He fully expected you to dodge or for something to deflect it - but you’re struck in the chest. He jumps when you're sent flying backwards and into a wall. A sickening crunch accompanies the impact
He hurt you, and the realization costs him to shake harder. The thought of you resenting him for it makes bile rise to his throat -
"Shit- are you okay?? What kinda villain doesn't dodge an attack?" he yells but keeps his distance.
You pick yourself up effortlessly, and he's almost relieved - if not for the blood dripping from your forehead.
You lift two fingers to the cut, "That was an unexpected development," and bring them down to admire black ichor, "yet not unwelcome"
"Tell me, does it feel good? All this blot must be an endless source of mana...why not fight me? You know you want to,"
Idia always believed you were crazy, but this? What the hell were you feeling to become so creepy? He takes a step back and eyes you warily.
Idia grits his teeth, "The hell is wrong with you? I can't believe that I'm saying this but we're not in a game, idiot! I almost killed you!"
"Isn't it though?," you chuckle dryly, "it must be, considering how dangerous this world is. You agree, don't you? That hiding away is what's best when this," you gesture to yourself, "is what you find outside"
You've backed Idia into a corner with his own outlook on life as the ammo. He's lost for words. Unable to disagree since you are right - life outside is difficult.
"I-if I meant that then I wouldn't be here, now would I?" he smirks.
Yet you know better, "Truly? Then where were you before? I recall a young boy calling for his brother -for a 'savior' - long before you arrived"
You smile at the word 'savior,' yet it does not reach your eyes. In an instant you're in front of him, and Idia drop his wand in shock.
"Tell me - do you believe that you can 'save' me?," your lips point to frown, "do I even want to be saved?"
He goes quiet. That was definitely a villain monologue if he ever heard one...and if you currently weren't skirting death then he would cringe.
"Likely not," he whispers, "you have never needed to be saved. Out of everyone here MC, you are definitely the most meta character in this 'game,'"
You look down at him disinterested. Neither in his words or in how -for once- he is staving off your insults before they throw him into self-deprecation mode.
Idia gestures to the scene surrounding you, "I mean - just look at this! You've decimated half the school! I'd be crazy to think that sappy words and playing half-baked hero could stop this..." he places down the tablet in surrender and reaches out a shaking hand to grab your ankle. Blot curls from your body to his arm and he bites into his cheek to avoid shirking away, "...but I had to try. Normally when something bad happens - I wait for Ortho to step in. You too, you're so fearless that it's laughable,"
He glares up at you, his hair singing the floor surrounding him, "but this version of you took him away - and I know the real you is scared shitless. I may be spineless, but I'm not blind. You're freaking out more than I am at this mess, and I'm going to drag you back to fix it. I do not have the capacity to handle the social aftermath of being in the 'last survivor' trope, so let me save you, "
He pulls you down on top of him and secures his arms tightly around you. Idia doesn't let go through your squirming and the blot trying to worm it's way through his hold.
He can't save you alone, but he can make you save yourself. The crappy he speech was embarrassing enough so just give in already! Stop struggling and quit being so self-sacrificial. Be selfish for once and let him do something.
He longer he holds you, the less you struggle. The blot coating the area begins to clear as your body begins to tremble just as much as Idia's. Students begin to free themselves and he keeps you in a tight hold - for safe measure! Until someone comes to take you to the nurse! Definitely not because he can sense that you're crying, and is now conscious of the people staring at you both. He definitely is not trying to hide beneath you.
"Malleus"
All was silent. Malleus sat on the loveseat in his bedroom while reading a book to pass the time until nightfall. Then he would head over to Ramshackle dorm for his evening walk with his beloved. You would talk, and he would listen. The fireflies would light a path for you both to follow in the Forrest as he leads you by the hand. It is his favorite part of the day - these routine walks. Merely seeing your face brightens his mood, and having your attention solely on him is a kindness he does not deserve. He thanks whatever power that summoned you here every night before falling asleep.
The way you make idle chatter by asking about his day and take genuine interest in the mundane things he shares. Malleus' heart holds nothing but adoration for his caring sweetheart. He is attuned to every little movement, every mannerism and tick that sums you up.
Which is why his heart plummets and breath halts when your voice thrums in his ears. It was distant, but he would hear your call no matter how far.
What startles him most is the fear in your tone. You know well that he would allow no harm to befall you - ever. He has come to your aid countless times. During each you remain calm and ever the pacifist. Only asking him to support you in solving a problem.
This fear was new. He hadn't pondered it longer than a moment before Lilia burst into his bedroom.
"We have a problem. A big one," he says, with no trace of humor or playfulness in his voice.
Malleus all but throws the book at his bed and dashes out the door. With a poof, he vanishes.
Thunder and lightning echo across Night Raven College in his wake.
Malleus feels unsettled at the sight before him. He prepared for the worst - monsters, explosions, a psychopathic twink named after candy. He was ready to shield you from all evil and banish whatever made you to say his name in any tone other than bliss.
What was he to do, when faced with you? A corrupt, stomach-churning, inconceivably warped version of you...but still the person he cares for deeply? He cannot use force. That is for certain.
Then there is the matter of the students. In one corner a defenseless few cower together, as those braver stand guard to fight off figments of blot. He hears familiar voices in the distance - some cursing you and others pleading. They notice him and cry out in relief. That is a first - very few find his presence comforting.
"Malleus? How curious, that you'd join me before nightfall," you appear in front of him. Waves of miasma fly off you but it does not bother him in the slightest. As if he was infectious, the blot filters around him in waves to find its next victim.
His eyes visibly soften at what you've become, "MC...what should I do? How can I help you?"
"Help me? I am fine," you say, and he notes your dazed appearance. As if he was a figment of your imagination and you can see beyond him.
"No, you are not," he reaches out, "you are hurting. You would never dream of harming others. You are overcome by negative emotions,"
"I do not feel 'overcome' by anything. They are the ones who chose to run. I merely stopped them. If everyone would comply then I wouldn't have to hurt them," you slap his hand away and Malleus glowers, "they asked for this. You are as well, if you decide to oppose me,"
Retreating a few paces back, Malleus rethinks his approach. He cannot help you if you can't tell him what is wrong, but he cannot deduce what's wrong if you think he is 'opposing' you.
Malleus knows that he can end this with the snap of his fingers. It would save all of NRC's students, but in the process you could be hurt - and in his humble opinion, you have suffered enough. The mere memory of this incident will leave you in emotional pieces that he is more than willing to help collect. He cannot do the same for physical parts.
"I will not fight you," he says definitively, "but I will not leave you either. I promised to protect you and I do not go back on my word. Until the day you are willing to listen, I will wait for you,"
"and what if that day never comes to pass?"
"Then I will wait beyond forever. Until you give me a chance to repay the kindness you have shown me, and ensure nothing causes you pain ever again,"
Malleus is genuine despite the cries of his school mates and teachers. He has no doubts that you will see reason, be it within the next hour or in the next millennia. You will never be too far gone because he will be there to keep you within reach. He is willing to wait.
You clutch your hands at your sides, "Kindness? I have never been kind. Only desperate,"
Malleus steps forward and removes one of his gloves. He remains at a safe distance despite wanting to hold you in his arms. Instead, he repeats his earlier actions and holds out a hand.
"Desperation can take many forms. Anger, anxiety, impulsiveness, - but you have always acted in the interest of others. Even now, in this state, you believe your harmful actions are necessary to 'stop' people and admit not desiring to hurt them. You may not see it, but you are kind,"
You stare at his ungloved hand before laying your own on top of it. Normally your skin would be a welcome warmth against his reptilian temperature, but your touch is like ice. He lightly wraps his hand around yours, and steps forward to rest his chin on your head.
"I'm cruel,"
"No, you are caring,"
"I hate this place. I only help because I have to,"
"You dislike being trapped, yet cannot help but care for the people here,"
He lifts his hand behind your head, and pushes your face into the nape of his neck. The air begins to clear, and he smiles in relief.
"I might hurt you," you say softly, and clutch his sleeves.
"And I will forgive you,"
"Grim!"
In your last sane moments, you call for your friend. The little cat that's been by your side since the very beginning. He was scared to become a monster...but Grim knew deep down that you would save him. You're his best friend! You always bail him out of trouble.
So what should he do? Tell him MC...what can Grim do to help you?
He's scared. You both may make up a team, but he's always been the troublemaker while you are the intelligent one! He might brag about a test or two - but he can't make a plan! That's your job!
The floor shakes under his paws, and he loses his footing. The black magestone slips from his claws and is lost to the crowd. There is no strength in this little body. He normally runs into your arms when it's time to run.
Hands grab him by the scruff of his neck and Grim's hoisted in the air. He struggles against your grip, but is forced to look at your face.
Do you know how many suitors he has had to scare off because of that face? You're beautiful - which pisses Grim off because people keep trying to sway his henchman away from him.
Do you know how tiring that is? Protecting you from jerks and wannabe's. You don't have any family here to help. He owes them that much since you are HALF of the reason that Grim gets to be a student.
You've always been naïve when it came to other people...too honest. Which Grim took advantage of from time to time - but only he can do so! You are his meal ticket after all!
Your grip on his neck is tight enough to prevent him from escaping, but it doesn't hurt. As you look on at the people trying to fight - some to escape like wimps and others to 'save' you - Grim gives up. If you're determined to destroy the school...well, he can't stop you. No one can. You always find a way to make things work in your favor and Grim secretly thanked the Great Seven that you were not his enemy. Until now, that is. Now he's cursing them out heavily in his head.
The students fighting. Ace, Deuce, Jack, Epel, - anyone and everyone who's become your friend. Some yell for you to let Grim go and others focus on trying to make you see reason all together. They can't get close.
If you weren't 'busy,' Grim knows that you'd be there with them. Being bossy as hell and taking charge. He wishes that he had that courage.
You finally move when everyone has fallen. With Grim still in your grasp, you walk across the sea of blot to admire your work. It's then that a glimmer catches Grim's eye, and your foot kicks the dropped magestone from before.
You reach down to pick it up - cautiously.
"Is this yours?" you say, and hold it up to him. Grim's eyes widen and he quickly snatches it in his paws.
Upon close inspection, he sees that he was mistaken before. In the far corner a sliver of purple stands out against the black stone. You could be saved.
Grim could stop this.
So he does what he does best, and clings to your side. His claws dig in to your waist and no matter how hard you pull he does not let go.
"It's my fault you're like this, right? I annoy ya and demand things all the time. I'll stop getting ya into trouble - I promise! I won't mess with your lovelife or steal your snacks anymore. I'll start studying for tests and help clean around the house! I'll even quit stealing your phone! Please just give me my friend back - "
Somewhere amidst his garbled sniveling - you stop pulling at him and instead begin to stroke his fur. His last resort resonated with the ounce of kindness that still remained. As you held Grim safely in your arms, the world shifted back to normal.

Tumblr media
╰┈➤ mean!rafe makes y/n cover up
warnings: rafe being an ass, toxic relationship, alcohol consumption.
summary: mean!rafe makes innocent!reader cover up when his friend comments on her body.
rafe sipped his drink quietly as topper and a few others chattered around him, nothing else by the sound of smooth waves and the occasional splash made by his girlfriend could be heard.
they’d taken the druthers out for the day, rafe, y/n and a couple of his friends. they’d planned on just having a nice day. a couple beers, a dip in the sea, what more could they want?
rafe’s ears perked up when he overheard topper’s friend, who had tagged along, talking quietly. “man, the things i’d do to her..” he groaned quietly, throwing his head back exaggeratedly. “shut the fuck up man, you want rafe to hear that shit?” topper snapped, leaning into the other boys ear.
rafe’s jaw clenched as the words replayed in his mind, his gaze flickering to the girl in the water, paddling around in a pale pink bikini.
the next few minutes went by quickly as rafe’s ears rang in anger, gripping the can in his hand so tight it started to crumple.
fortunately, his attention was quickly snapped away by her calling. “rafe, could you grab me a towel please?” she sang, climbing the short ladder on the side of the boat.
sighing, he reached for the beach towel she’d laid out previously, in preparation for her swim, before moving to hand it to her.
“thank you baby” she grinned, smiling ear to ear as she shifted her weight to her tip-toes, pressing a soft kiss on the underside of his jaw.
the stoic, unimpressed look on his face remained as he followed her further inside the boat, where she planned to dry off.
unaware, she jumped slightly as she smacked into his chest, having turned back around to shut the door.
“put this on” he stated, handing her one of his t-shirts he’d picked up from his bag. her brows furrowed before him, staring up at him in confusing. “it’s too hot for a t-shirt rafey, plus, i really like this bikini, it’s one of my new ones!” she giggled, pushing the garment back towards him.
“seriously y/n, put it on” he growled through gritted teeth, once again handing it back to her, a little put rougher this time.
taken by surprised, she gently picked up the shirt from his grasp, still looking at him strangely. “i don’t understand, do you not like this one?” she muttered, a slight wobble residing in her bottom lip.
listening intently, rafe realised his tone of voice and quickly covered it up with a forced chuckle. “no no, of course i like it, it’s just that..” sighing, he placed an arm around her waist, guiding her to perch on his lap as he sat on the edge of the bed. “you wouldn’t want my friends to think you’re a whore, would you?”
her mouth fell open as he spoke, somewhat hurt by the thought of his friends feeling that way. “no, of course not! is that what they think?” she gasped, placing a hand over her chest as if there were intruding eyes watching.
bowing his head, he nodded slowly. “of course i don’t think that, i think you look beautiful baby, but i need you to cover up from now on, m’kay angel?” he smiled, kissing her forehead quickly before tapping the t-shirt in her hands as a reminder to put it on.
“um, y-yeah, okay..i’ll be out in a minute..” her smile faltered as she watched rafe leave the small bedroom, her eyes flirting between the now closed door and the shirt in her hands.

DAY 5919
StWork, Mumbai May 2, 2024 Thu 12:49 PM
Birthday - EF - Elena Iankova Friday, 3 May .. and all our wishes for a happy birthday
🌹
Yo !
here before time for a very big change .. haha ..
but at work and got a bit of time and BOOM !
got to say the travel from Juhu home to work Marine Drive in 30 mins .. amazing Coastal Road and the Tunnel emerging on Marine Drive , just before its flyover and simply amazing .. !
Super constructed roads, tunnel, neat clean construct .. no traffic jams .. and done ..
Ok just to change the topic .. here is something to know :
Know what is a "mondegreen?'
MONDEGREENS
If you’ve been listening to rock music, you know it’s often hard to make out the lyrics. They sing it their way and we hear it our way.
Jimi Hendrix famously sang the phrase “While I kiss the sky” which was heard by thousands as “While I kissed this guy.”
CCR’s popular song originally said, “There’s a bad moon on the rise.” Many heard it as “There’s a bathroom on the right.”
Deep Purple’s still-popular chorus (known for its timeless guitar riff) “Smoke on the water/Fire in the sky” was misheard as “Smoke on the water/Fire engine guy.”
Nirvana’s anthem “Smells like Teen Spirit” had the lines, “Here we are now/Entertain us.” They were misheard as, “Here we are now/In containers.”
When Elvis Presley sang, “Everybody in the whole cell block”, many heard it as” Everybody in a wholesale frock”
There’s actually a word for misheard lyrics like these.
Mondegreen.
Some mondegreens became so famous that even artistes like Hendrix and CCR sang the misheard versions in their live concerts in a spirit of fun and tease.
It’s not just in pop songs that mondegreens occur. The US national anthem begins with the lofty words, “Oh say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light.’ Some heard them as “José, can you see…”
Occasionally, mondegreens had an interesting side-effect. Joe Cocker sang of a ‘lovely planet’ which was misheard as ‘lonely planet.’ The latter became the name of a well-known travel guide series of books.
No one knows why we hear the wrong thing although there are theories. It’s akin to the game of Chinese Whispers where the original line gets progressively distorted into some hilarious garbage by the time it reaches the last guy.
Mondegreens are not restricted to English alone. South Indians, with limited knowledge of Hindi, were taught patriotic songs in Hindi by zealous teachers. A popular one had the repeating phrase, “Bara tamata.” School students sang it with great gusto. Years later, some of them realized the actual words were “Bharat Mata.”
A popular line from Qurbani song, “Aap jaisa koi meri/zindagee mein aaye/ toh baat bun jaaye” was understood as “Aap jaisa koi…toh baap bun jaaye.” The defective version made sense to many who saw Zeenat Aman gyrating on those lyrics while gaping at Feroz Khan.
Many who weren’t familiar with the hill station between Bombay and Pune heard the Gulaami song as “Haathi ka andaa la” until they realized it was “Aati kya Khandala”.
I have a friend, her name is Geeta. Her family called her Gitu. Throughout her childhood and youth, she thought Rajesh Khanna was singing for her, when he said, ”Mere sapnon ki raani kab aaye Gitu”.
'Mondegreen' sounds French but isn't. In 1954, a writer at Harper’s Magazine remembered how as a little girl she misheard an old English ballad. The actual words, saluting a dead war hero, were:
𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘰' 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯.
She heard them as:
𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘰' 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯.
And thus was born the word ‘mondegreen’ to signify all misheard lyrics from that moment on.
Turns out, mondegreen itself started life as a mondegreen.
sent to me by a friend .. 🤣🤣
More perhaps later .. or perhaps not ..

Amitabh Bachchan
and some more .. a very pertinent article in TOI ..

@sincereme sent: you're hurting my hands!
Tumblr media
there's a numbness in her head. an airy feeling that comes in through a needle stabbed in her arm and flows throughout her body, making her feel more dead than alive. if this is what death feels like---an angel carrying her away from every last ache---she is ready to close her eyes and embrace it. johanna thought she was floating in a strange afterlife until she heard connor's voice. now that she's gripping onto his fingers, she is jerked back to earth where all she remembers is the inability to move and a plastic mask over her face that seemed to suffocate her. eyes dart around the white room, still unable to comprehend much other than connor's presence.
❝ i-i'm sorry! ❞ she lets go. ❝" are you alright? i'm sorry! i didn't mean to! i thought-i thought-i thought--- ❞ what does she think? ( no one is listening to her! there is no point in thinking or speaking. why try? ) does it hurt or is she dead? johanna tries to tells herself it's simple numbness, but her minds spin too fast to comprehend it. how can she feel nothing, yet everything at an overwhelming pace? ❝ this isn't . . . i don't know where this is. i think they're going to kill me. ❞ she blinks at nothing. hands hang like a neck at a noose. ❝ i wouldn't mind if they do. ❞

o. buoy
If Satoru was forced to use some sort of ocean-related terminology to describe you, he’d say you’re a buoy.
You were the marine biology major. (What was the difference between that and oceanography? Satoru had no idea. You explained it to him at least twice though). Because of that, Satoru heard his fair share of marine terminology from you.
Buoys were those floating things at sea, the ones from Finding Nemo that had all the seagulls on it. You said they were guiding posts, gave heads up for reefs or they could be warnings for hazardous zones.
To Satoru, you were like an anchorless buoy that ー no matter how far he sailed ー he could never reach.
i. halocline
You’ve never felt permanent; not to Satoru.
You sooner felt like one of those quickly formed friendships you thought would last forever only for it to dwindle out as fast as it started. Then that person was just a forgotten name in your contacts list until you’re scrolling down and going ‘Who the hell is this? Delete’ without a second thought.
It was strange.
An oxymoron of the highest degree.
How did someone who was such a constant in his life from the moment you set foot in it simultaneously feel as impermanent as foam on the waves? One minute you were there, the next you weren’t. Satoru wasn’t sure when the fear of you disappearing entirely crept in.
When those looks started appearing on your face.
All he knew was that it started long before he started sleeping with you and it started long before you left.
One moment you’re hanging out ー undoubtedly doing something stupid. Singing the wrong lyrics to a song on the radio, putting Suguru’s hair in pigtails, watching María la del Barrio with Utahime who took one Spanish class and made telenovelas her entire personality for a month ー then you’d grow quiet and this far away look would be in your eyes. Satoru never knew where you went in those moments, but it wasn’t there.
So he’d do something to anchor you back to land. It didn’t have to be much.
A poke to the cheek,
a tickle to your side,
calling out to you,
sometimes he’d even play with your fingers.
It didn’t matter what he did as long as you’d blink and grin and go “what’s up?” and everything would feel right in the world.
It never would feel right long enough though; the look always came back and the feeling would persist.
When you sang songs in the car.
(“I can do it fast or slow, it really doesn't matter, though. 'Cause I'm a pro, what you say? You wanna take me toe to toe? Uh no, dude, I think so,” you’d rap Kel’s verse flawlessly like you’d rehearsed it for hours. “My style is phat and Immature’s got my back on this funky trackー” you pointed at Satoru enthusiastically.
“You want fries with that?” Satoru would point back with way too much passion for a line that went way too hard for what he was actually saying. “Coo coo ca-choo whatcha gonna do?”
Shoko would roll her eyes but she’d still be smiling when Suguru softly brought in the chorus with rhythmic bumps of his head, “watch me do my thing, I like to do my thing, watch me do my thing, everybody sayー”
Your head continued to bump along but you stopped singing along and looked out the window. Satoru remembered he threw his arm around your shoulders loudly belting the rest of the lyrics until you laughed and joined back in.)
When you indulged Utahime’s telenovela personality change.
(“[First], quit zoning out. I’m bored.”
“Hey, unlike you, I’m actually paying attention.”
“Oh yeah, then what’s been going on?”
“Soraya Montenegro is gasping in Spanish right now.”
“Can you both shut u- OH MY GODー”
“IS NO ONE GONNA STOP THIS BITCH?”)
And at parties.
(Satoru always knew you were about to leave when you made that face. Things could start perfectly at the beginning of the night. You’d finally skulk out of your cave like you were Gollum from Lord of the Rings and wave him over. The next moment? You were in deep thought while your friends made joke after joke, rip after rip.
“Sorry gang, but my lips don’t touch anything but Don Equis and Asahi,” you’d say with an air of regality not suited for a party of college students. “Maybe Corona if there’s nothing else. I’m not drinking... whatever this is. So I’m gonna head out, there’s a 24 hour liquor store around here somewhere.”
“You coming back?” Satoru didn’t know why he asked, he already knew what your answer would be.
“Nah, I think I’m done for the night. I’ll catch you guys later though.”
“I’ll walk you back to your place then.”)
He doesn’t know why he looked at your lips that night at the park.
You were friends, he liked being your friend. That’s all there was to it. It had always annoyed him up until that point when Suguru and Shoko joked the two of you were more like a couple than anything else. That he chased after you like a lovesick puppy, the pathetic but funny kind. He wasn’t sure why it annoyed him so much.
Maybe it was because it felt like it reduced everything about his friendship with you into that shit take that the opposite sex couldn’t just be friends.
Maybe it was something else entirely. He doesn't know.
You weren’t permanent.
Not while you sat beside him in a park at who knows when in the morning and not even when you reassured him his life would work out the way he wanted and you touched him like he was something precious to you.
“Be careful I don’t disappear for months, spirited away by the sea folk on my Children of the Sea shit. I’ll come back to shore occasionally, mysterious as the sea itself.” You already were as mysterious as the sea itself.
“Even if you got spirited away, I’d just go and bring you right back.” Satoru meant it. Even if, more than anything, it felt more like he was making that promise to reassure himself. It didn’t matter how far off to the sea you went as long as Satoru could bring you back to the shore. “You’ve doomed yourself.” More specifically you said that to him. Maybe he should have taken it more of a warning than a light-hearted nudge.
“You said it first, remember?” You did. He remembered it as clear as day. He’d stumbled onto an unstable boat and you were a buoy far off in the distance.
“There’s no ditching me now, not even at sea.” So stay. That’s all Satoru needed you to do.
The sprinklers that decided to join in on the moment must have been a sign that he was in the middle of a prophecy that was going to be fulfilled whether he wanted it to or not. That’s why he kissed you first in the doorway of your bathroom when you just came to ask if he wanted tea.
Buoys are supposed to have anchors, right?
Maybe he could be yours.
When Satoru woke up the day after the first time you slept together, he woke up alone.
It wasn't until he reached out an arm lazily to your side of the bed and he patted the mattress several times that he realized no one was there. The bed had long since gone cold so you had to have been gone for a while. Yes, you called five minutes later from McDonald’s cheerily going “Yooo, Satoru, I’m at Mickey D’s, what do you want?” Still it cemented your impermanence and that was only the first of many times he woke up by himself.
You could be out the house or in; Satoru preferred when you were in. Sometimes you’d be in the kitchen humming some unknown tune, other times you’d be watching TV on the couch. Either way, he could drape himself over you with a tired ‘morning’ and hold you close.
(“What are you wa- is that the new episode of Love is Blind?”
“Um… I only just started it two minutes ago?”
“[First], what the hell!? While I was asleep?!”)
From then on when Satoru saw those far away looks, he’d kiss you since it was on the table now. Satoru put everything into those kisses and you’d kiss him back just as hard.
Don’t go anywhere. He’d thread one hand into your hair and the other would pull your waist closer to his. Satoru didn’t want or need anything else. Stay.
You kissed him like you would.
It’s crazy how easily you could just slip away from everything like a ghost that hadn’t been there at all. It was shockingly apparent that impromptu trip you took to the beach in the middle of the semester.
Everyone had been together in awe of the bioluminescent dots in the sea and it donned on him you hadn’t said anything in a while. You were gone.
He’d painted his panic in his usual bravadoー nonchalant and grinning, claiming he was gonna go bother you for a bit.
It was a relief when he found you.
It was dreadful when he found you.
Satoru couldn’t see your face clearly but he could tell your look was intent on the sea and how it shined with the glow of a billion bright lights. If there was a ghost ship calling you out to the depths, Satoru knew you’d leave in a heartbeat.
You slowly became more noticeably distant from your group of mutual friends after that trip. It didn’t start immediately, you’d acted the same as usual at first. You still sang songs in the car, Utahime had grown out of her novela phase in favor of all of you losing your shit at the editing of Indian serial dramas and in between those moments Satoru found himself in your bed again.
It was around that time you started kissing his forehead; when the kisses started, that’s when you started drifting away from his orbit. You said it was homework, your profs telepathically communicating to increase your workload.
You alright?
What kind of sadists are your professors if you’re this busy?
Just let me know if you need me to come over some kind of distraction. Sorry for coming over earlier unannounced, I shouldn’t have assumed. Just wanted to make sure you were okay.
“Do you think she thinks I’m being clingy?” Satoru mumbled as he stared at your text that you were fine just dying from homework. You definitely thought he’s being clingy. He’d always been a bit clingy with his friends. He was probably more overbearing than usual though.
“Yes,” Kenjaku replied without missing a beat. “You’re gonna get dumped if you keep this up.”
God what does Suguru see in this guy? He’s like a fucking parasite. “I wasn’t asking you,” Satoru glared. “And she isn’t my girlfriend.”
Suguru snorted, running his hands through his boyfriend’s hair, “play nice both of you,” he said lightly and Satoru rolled his eyes. “But if [First] is saying she’s fine, then just trust that she’s fine. She’ll come back around when her workload decreases.”
Satoru glared with a pout, “you’re worried too, don’t act like it’s just me.”
“I never said it was, it’s just that between the two of us I’m handling it better. I sent her a surprise uber eats delivery yesterday.” Asshole, that was a brilliant idea. Satoru wished he thought of it first. Instead he asked Shoko to check on you; maybe you’d be more receptive if it wasn’t him bothering you for the tenth text in a row.
Shoko went to check on you. Apparently you were fine and Satoru was worrying for nothing. She even said that you would come and hang out with them soon. Some people might say it’s a bit petty to celebrate the failures of others. In another universe, Satoru might even agree with them. But in this universe, Satoru was a hater first and foremost. So if he and his friends wanted to go out to eat to celebrate the fact Zenin Naoya was bitching about a failing grade on an essay, he and his friends were going to go out and eat to celebrate Zenin Naoya failing his essay.
Apparently, you were all haters.
It was also just nice seeing you again. If Satoru was more poetic, he’d probably add a bunch of other things to that statement. It was just nice to have you back.
“Karma is probably gonna come back to clap us in the ass for celebrating someone getting a bad grade,” you snickered.
“Sounds like a problem for future us,” Suguru grinned with a twinkle in his eyes.
“We go to school with the Japanese version of Ben Shapiro,” Satoru choked on his strawberry smoothie when Shoko said that. “I think we’re covered on karma.”
“Y’all are terrible people,” Satoru clicked his tongue, shaking his head in disbelief and shame.
“Hey, good neighbor, this dinner was your idea,” you nudged him with a dry tone and a smile.
Satoru nudged back with a grin of his own.
Dinner was fun, lots of drinks and jokes. It was a non-alcoholic beverage sort of night. Shoko said it was because they’d clearly been drinking too much if Satoru of all people had gotten better with holding his liquor. Her point was fair but rude nonetheless yet when Satoru turned to whine for you to come to his defense, the distant glaze was over your eyes and your smile was smaller than it had been the last time he looked at it.
“[First],” your motion to close your apartment door stopped and you hummed with a raised eyebrow. Satoru felt more dread than usual that night. Something about the air had been different. The face you made felt different than it normally did. It was always distant, you were always far away, but tonight was the worst it had ever been. “We’re good, right?”
You look at him like he grew an extra four eyes. “Why wouldn’t we be?”
Satoru couldn’t meet your eyes as he shrugged wordlessly. You’d probably say he was being ridiculous and clingy if he mentioned anything but he couldn’t find anything else to say to make himself seem unbothered either.
You rolled your eyes with a grin before stretching your arms out wide. “You’re being overdramatic, you big baby. Come here, big guy,” Satoru pulled you in close, burying his nose in the corner of his neck. Despite welcoming your embrace, it did nothing to soothe Satoru’s anxieties.
“I’ll see you later, yeah?” Satoru asked without pulling away from you completely.
The way you smiled at him was warm but it still somehow felt unreadable. Satoru knew all of your smiles. Your happy ones,
the sad ones,
the one you made when Sora finally got into Smash.
The ones you made when you were mad that he was successfully charming his way out of you being mad at him.
Satoru didn’t know this one.
Despite that fact, Satoru let you cup his face in your hands and he let you stand on the tip of your toes to place a kiss on his forehead. “See you, Satoru."
ii. undertow
Sleep didn’t come to Satoru after he laid in bed.
His head was too full as he kept running back through what you told him after he took you home.
You didn’t say you’d see him later.
You’re just being overdramatic, Satoru forced his eyes to close. You’re always overdramatic. It’s my best trait 30% of the time.
No one else said anything that night, it was just him who felt like this, right? It was always just him. If everyone else felt like something was off all night, someone would have mentioned it by now. With that, Satoru forced his eyes closed for all of five minutes before he decided to send, at the very least, a dumb meme. Something that’d make you laugh when you saw it and would make you reply “I’m wheezing” or “that’s so us!”
A quick stroll through his photos was all it took to find something suitable. He can’t remember exactly what it was, only that it was stupid.
It was stupid and didn’t go through to your phone.
A disconnect and reconnect dance to his wifi later and it still didn’t go through.
Satoru’s feet was on the pavement before not even a heartbeat after he calmly made sure his apartment was locked.
He just had to be sure you were okay. It was just him being an overdramatic, big baby. Your phone died or something and that’s why nothing was going through. Or maybe this was like the time you put your phone in airplane mode to narrowly avoid sending Shoko the wrong meme and then forgot to switch it back off.
You don’t answer the door when he knocks and he goes back and forth between knocking and trying to reach you on your other socials.
Twitter? Blocked.
He can’t find you anywhere else.
Instagram.
LINE.
Discord.
It’s like you were never there, gone from all the group chats and servers you once shared.
Satoru stayed outside of your apartment for the better part of an hour before one of your neighbors opened her door tired and annoyed.
“Dude, do you know what time it is?” Your neighbor asked groggily. She’s a nice girl, the reason rent was low enough in the area you could afford an apartment on your own. Apparently she wrecked shit in the neighborhood on the low to keep the rent down. Even better was the fact she was the landlord’s daughter. Not all heroes wore capes.
“Sorry,” Satoru knew he must look like a maniac with his messy hair and wide eyes. “have you seen [First]? I’m having a hard time reaching her.”
The neighbor gave him a funny look, “she moved out tonight,” she told him like that was the fifth time she told him that her favorite color was orange. “I thought it was weird you didn’t help with moving her stuff out a few days ago. She gave me the key to give it to my dad tomorrow. Didn’t she tell you she was leaving?”
iii. la niña
Satoru didn’t know which was worse sometimesー the fact Shoko kept the fact he had a daughter a secret for five years or how he found out.
It wasn’t like Shoko approached him one gloomy night when memories of the most prominent ghost in his life began bubbling to the surface. She didn’t grimly say that she needed to tell him something and he should sit down for it. She didn’t start off with apologies, saying she felt she had no choice or that if things had gone different she would have told him.
None of that happened.
Satoru found out by accident.
Accident.
All because Shoko didn’t hear him approach her when she was on her phone scrolling through instagram. She was so focused on whatever she was looking at, she didn’t even notice how Satoru quietly snickered to himself and snuck behind her to give her spook. He was just about to say something, ready for swears and ‘you’re so annoying, what are you 12?!’s when he took an instinctual glance at her phone and he saw you.
Thoughts of scaring Shoko went out the window in a matter of milliseconds. He didn’t even feel his body move when he snatched her phone out of her hand.
“Heyー” Shoko started with an offended hiss but when she looked over her shoulder, she looked like she saw an impending storm and her jaw clamped shut.
Satoru took in the photo like it was the last thing he’d ever see. You were dressed in a blue t-shirt and cream colored shorts, some aquarium’s logo stitched into your clothes. You were holding a kid, hugging her tightly and kissing her cheek while the girl was caught mid-giggle. And when Satoru looked at the little girl in your arms, it was his eyes that looked back.
“I- she told me not to say anything,” Shoko murmured, brown eyes looking anywhere but at him. Then the secrets came rolling out one after the other.
“If I didn’t see this picture,” Satoru’s grip tightened on Shoko’s phone to ground himself to the present. “Were you still going to keep this a secret from me?”
Her answer was silence.
iv. el niño
“I have to be honest,” from the corner of your eye, you see Satoru chasing after Itsuki, Nanako and Mimiko. Suguru is watching next to you on the bench, your respective care bags for accidents and playground injuries at the ready between you. “I thought I’d be more surprised you’re a dad now. But it kinda just makes sense. You always had ‘single mom’ energy in school.”
Brown eyes flash with recognition, “you had a dream about me adopting kids once, right?”
“No, I had a dream where you were off a perk and calling people without powers ‘monkeys’,” you correct your old friend petulantly. As if he should have remembered after all these years without contact. “You just happened to adopt children in the process of all that.”
Suguru snorts, “my apologies for getting the details wrong. So you had a dream that I adopted kids once and that I was off a perk."
"Exactly, thank you."
A silence somewhere between comfortable and awkward settles over the two of you, save for the squeals of little girls and Satoru’s manic laughter as the evil sorcerer king.
Suguru looks nice.
He’s still rocking the man bun but he’s opted to let some of his hair hang loose and he’s a couple hundred pounds down a shitty, parasitic boyfriend. Suguru and Kenjaku broke up halfway through the semester after you transferred. “Before you ask, yes, we had dinner to celebrate,” Suguru told you when you saw him for the first time in years a few days ago.
You’ve had your fair share of private updates on the lives of your old friends you didn’t keep in contact with. Shoko kept you up to date on everything. A surprising number of your old friends had gone into the field of educationー Utahime, Suguru and Satoru. You wonder how Satoru’s parents reacted to that information. You have yet to ask; it seemed like too much of a mood killer when Satoru happily recounted stories about his students a few weeks ago.
When Itsuki almost trips you make to stand but Satoru catches her before you can blink.
“He’s pretty good with her,” Suguru says like he’s a mind reader. “There was this kid we used to babysit, Riko, when we were younger. He said he hated it but he’s always been pretty good with kids.”
You can believe it. There’s plenty of things you remember Satoru complaining about despite his inherent talents in them. It makes you want to cry sometimes seeing how good he is with Itsuki. Your daughter is smart enough to play neutral when he asks but you’re pretty sure your daughter has a favorite parent. Adorable little traitor, you laugh softly to yourself. You’d think five years would give someone an edge.
Five years.
“Are you… mad?” You look at your old friend from the corner of your eye.
Suguru takes his time answering, mulling over unknown thoughts in his head. Playful as you remember Suguru being, he’s always been introspective. He thinks before he acts, lets things slowly come to a boil before turning off the stovetop. “I was more worried than mad to start,” he finally speaks. “It’s not everyday an entire group of people gets ghosted. I’m a little mad you didn’t open up though.”
Your smile is small and your eyebrows knit apologetically.
“But at the end of the day, this is nothing compared to what went down between Satoru and me in high school. So I guess I can forgive you.” You never did get the story about Satoru and Suguru’s mysterious high school turning point. The itch to know all the details is minor compared to the way your shoulders relax when Suguru shoots you a familiar smile. I missed you too. “Just don’t do anymore disappearing acts.” Smooth as they come, Suguru raises a closed fist just above your care bags.
Smile a bit more grand, you bump the side of your fist to his. “I can happily vouch that it won’t be happening again.”
“Good. It’s nice to have you back.”
“It’s nice being back.”
v. sea state
“Did you get an undercut?”
“Yeah, a while ago,” Satoru grins. “I look nice, right?”
“Please accept the compliment normally so your arrogance doesn’t rub off on our daughter,” you shake your head but a good-natured grin is plastered on your face. “Itsuki, make sure Daddy behaves. You’re in charge as the honorary aquarist.”
Itsuki’s eyes fill with delight at the duty bestowed upon her. “I will,” she promises, chest puffed with as much pride as a five year old can produce. It’s a rare day off in the middle of the week for Satoru. Normally he’s confined to his school during these hours, but thanks to some school holiday you scheduled in advance for him to take Itsuki around your aquarium. It isn’t the first time Itsuki’s been, you’d taken her there before she could even walk. It might as well be her first visit though from how she’s beaming. “Daddy, you have to be good so Mommy doesn't get mad.”
“As you command, general,” Satoru salutes playfully, picking Itsuki up in his arms. “Now then, if you excuse us, this father-daughter duo is gonna enjoy the aquarium while you work.”
“Bup bup bup,” you tut before the man can take off. “At least let me get my goodbye kiss before you run off to have fun without me,” you peck Itsuki’s cheek once, twice before blowing a raspberry and she squeals. “Alright,” you place your hands on your hips. “You two go have fun. Tell Daddy all the names you gave the whale sharks, okay?”
You think that’s that until Itsuki innocently asks, “where’s Daddy’s kiss, Mommy?” You blink once. Maybe you misheard- “You’re supposed to give both of us goodbye kisses, aren’t you?” Apparently you haven’t.
“I think Daddy’s too old for goodbye kisses, Itsuki.”
Itsuki squints, unsatisfied with your answer, “but Grandma always kisses Granny and they’re ancient.”
Why do your parents have to have a long lasting and fulfilling love life?
You and Satoru share an awkward smile as you both wonder what either of you can do to get out of this situation. Kissing Satoru used to be as easy as breathing. He’s always been the more affectionate of the two of you and it rubbed off on you some time during your university days. But you’re not in university anymore and your relationship has most definitely changed since then.
Still with bated breath, you gesture for Satoru to bring his head low enough for you to kiss his forehead, “there. Now both of you go have fun.”
If you think you see Satoru’s expression dim, he’s all smiles the moment you blink. “Try not to be jealous when you see us feeding the stingrays, [First].” He’s gone before you can tease you’re the one of the employees that help with that.
Once a maelstrom, always a maelstrom.
You love your place of work, it always has a familiar noisy sort of peaceful bathed in the light of blue decorated in corals, pinks and purples. Aquariums have a special magic to them. You fell in love with the sea when you were young and never fell out. The magic somehow is renewed every time you clock in, even on the most trying days.
How can you not when you see the dozens of people that stop by with the same love?
How can you not when you see dozens of people that stop by and fall in love with it for the first time?
“Hi, Mommy!” You hear Itsuki call from a distance. You wonder how she can even see you when you look up and see she’s on Satoru’s shoulders. It’s so natural, the two of them together. She’s wearing his sunglasses, if you can really say that. They keep sliding off her face but she holds onto them resolutely and Satoru is smiling widely in front of the tank full of black tip reef sharks, whale sharks and dozens of other fish in between.
You don’t know how your heart can fill with even more affection than you thought possible but it does. “Hi, baby,” you wave back. “I love you!”
“I love you too!” I have to enjoy that before she gets old enough to start thinking she’s too cool to tell her mom I love you. You know Satoru should too when you see her lean over to plant her father an awkward kiss on his head. You can’t hear what she tells him but you can guess she must be saying she loves him. Even from his profile, you can tell Satoru is saying he loves her back from how adoringly he looks up at her.
You see Itsuki giggling and saying something else you can’t hear, looking down at her father in earnest.
Whatever it is she says, Satoru looks over at you with eyes that are wide and somehow reflect all of the blue from tank lights. Despite how it makes your heart twist, you give him another small wave. When he doesn’t wave back, you wonder what it is your daughter could have said that had him in such a stupor.
Whatever he says to Itsuki, his eyes stay on you while he says it.
vi. nearshore
“Do you still like the same brand of honey or no?” You call over your shoulder from the kitchen.
It’s unusually quiet in your apartment since Itsuki is at your parents’ house for the weekend. You only realized you’d forgotten to tell your co-parent when he showed up at your house with sweets in hand. “What Itsuki doesn’t know won’t hurt her,” you told him with a snicker when you invited him inside to eat them.
“Satoru?” You call out again.
No response.
You turn off the eye your kettle is on and look out into the living room. He’s right where you left him. “Hey,” you sit on the ottoman in front of him. He blinks in surprise when he sees your hand waving in front of face. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Satoru smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes.
“Let me rephrase that question,” you start anew. “What’s wrong? Come on now,” you grin crookedly. “You’ve always sucked at pretending to be okay in front of me.”
Satoru’s smile falters for a heartbeat, “yeah?”
“Yes, Mr. Bravado,” Satoru might have been an expert at fooling others, but you know him. He was the guy who never took notes but passed every test because he worked his ass off in the background. The type who’d act oblivious but you realize halfway through a meal that the reason he took you is because he noticed you’d been feeling down lately. It’s one of the things you love about him. “So come out with it, fess up.”
One, two, three seconds pass before Satoru finally cracks.
“I’m mad. More at myself than anything.” Before you can reply, Satoru opens his mouth again but it feels more like he's talking to himself. “I shouldn’t be upset anymore, right? We made up.” Satoru runs his fingers through his hair in frustration. “We made up,” he says again. “I shouldn’t still be mad about anything. Things have been going great.”
Satoru finally falls silent and he looks tired. You hate you’re the reason for it. “It’s okay to still be mad about Itsuki. I’m sorry,” you whisper. “I… I’d take it back if I could. I know that doesn’t mean anything after five years but I mean it. Even if I was scared I should have told you. I just- I don’t know, it had gotten into me. I was thinking how you couldn’t commitー”
“You thought I was non-committal?” Satoru raises an eyebrow and he looks hurt by your revelation.
“Satoru, you have never been in a relationship with anyone throughout the time I’ve known you,” you rub your finger and thumb together nervously. Five years later is as good as any time to have a conversation you should have had long ago. “You were scared when I asked what our relationship was, remember?”
“I didn’t know what the right answer was,” Satoru argues with his hands raised. “I thought you were tired of our friends always talking about us being a couple.”
“You were relieved when I said that-” you stammer over your words thoughts going much faster than your mouth could. You remember the tormented days of unrequited affection quite clearly. If there was someone who avoided romantic relationships like the plague, it was Satoru. He was a flirt, relished in the attention he received for his well-known good looks. Regardless, he’d never committed to anyone. “You said fucking someone else was a non-issue! For all I knew you were sleeping with someone else, it wasn’t like we were-”
“It was a non-issue if it meant you weren’t going to take off and start avoiding me!” Satoru snaps like you’ve grown a second head. Maybe you did judging by how he looks at you incredulously. Your mouth closes, unsure what to say next and Satoru looks away with a scoff. “It’s the other way around,” he mutters so soft you almost didn’t catch it. “you were the non-committal one.”
“Excuse me?” It’s your turn to look at Satoru like his body has magically sprung additional body parts. When he doesn’t immediately say anything, you double down. “Satoru, you don’t get to say that and then turn around and not elaborate on it.”
“You know, the first day we met, Suguru told me that I acted like the sun shined out of your ass,” Satoru says much to your confusion. But he went on, lost in his memories, “it might as well have, I thought you were so cool. I wanted you in my life so bad from pretty much the moment you said I doomed myself. I didn’t care what happened next in my life as long as you were there for it.
“But you left me,” Satoru croaks with a smile, crystal blue eyes dark and empty. “You left me.” The way he says it breaks your heart. “I’m so gone for you. I’ve always been gone for you. I just didn’t want to see it. Somehow I always knew you’d leave.” He laughs, cold and humorless and completely lost. “And you did.
“You could be right there with me and then suddenly be so far away. It always felt like you would just up and leave one day. You and Utahime always talked about intuition and trusting it. I guess mine was saying from early on ‘this girl is gonna break your heart one day, don’t fall in love with her.’”
“I knew it when you got those far away looks in your eyes. I knew it when I woke up that first morning alone. I knew it when you didn’t say you’d see me later. And just like that you were gone on that ghost ship. You left and didn’t even tell me you were going. Do you know how much that fucking hurt? I wait outside for hours and your neighbor’s the one who tells me you’re gone. I may have purposely lied to myself about how I felt but I never slept with anyone else. I didn’t want anyone else. I was the one who kept reaching out, you never reached back.
Itsuki’s the second tier on the cake and the rest of the frosting. You’ve been gone on that ghost ship for five years and when I finally catch up, I still feel like I’m drowning.”
“... I didn’t mean to make you feel that way. I didn’t know.”
“I know. That’s almost the worst part. Guess I didn't wear my heart on my sleeve as much as you thought.”
.
.
.
“It was the week after our second year midterms,” you recall when you were six years younger and the biggest problem you had in life was a professor was out to get you. Midterms had finally passed and you were on a victorious emotional high after finishing your last exam. At least until some asshole who should have covered their mouth coughed and you were coughing by the end of the day. “I got a cold and just so I could breathe better when I slept, you let me lay on you on the couch the whole time even though you ended up getting sick afterwards.”
You’d felt so bad, coughing all the while but Satoru hadn’t let you budge an inch, proudly claiming ‘I don’t get sick, I’m built different so cough away.’ When he got sick days later, he said over coughs, ‘This has nothing to do with when you were sick. This is from Suguru.’ “That was when I realized that I’d been stupidly in love with you ever since I met you.”
Gojou Satoru has been called many things throughout your years of knowing him. But for you, the fall child has always been easy to love. He was made for it. “You were a pain in the ass but you were my pain in the ass. I never wanted it any other way.”
“Stop being mean to me,” Satoru leans forward to rest his head on your shoulder just as you wrap your arms around his back. “Don’t you know who you’re being mean to when you’re being an ass?”
You laugh weakly, “the guy I’m still gone for?” When you hear a sniffle in the corner of your neck, you tighten your grip.
"Don't go away this time," Satoru hugs back.
vii. ocean deep, seafoam soft
Satoru finds himself in your bed again for the first time in years.
“I confess my love to you and you try to kill me, I'm hurt.”
“Oh don’t be such a baby, I didn’t even know it was there,” you chuckle fondly after the two of you stumble into your bed after nearly tripping on a stray toy on your floor. Satoru loves that laugh. He loves how you look up at him with all the adoration in the world. “Remember that time we forgot that textbook was on your bed?”
“Please don’t remind me, my back hurts just remembering it,” Satoru whines but laughter escapes him despite his apparent trauma. It wasn’t one of your best moments during your shared years of sexual escapades in college. You pull him down kiss his lips tenderly and he practically moans, relishing the feeling. No more forehead kisses, he wants to tell you. You did that a lot before you left.
"I love you," Satoru whispers in awe at the words falling out of his own mouth. In awe at the fact you’re even there with him at that moment. “I love you.”
Your hands cup his face like he's something precious and you thumbs away the tears pooling in his eyes despite the ones in your own, "I love you too.”
Satoru’s had sex with you more times than he can count.
He memorized everything, refused to forget a single detail. It feels like the first time all over again.
The way one set of your fingernails dig into his back while he envelopes your other hand with one of his own. How your fingers intertwined tightly. How amazing you feel squeezing around him tightly. The speed of your pulse as he peppers your throat with kisses and soft nips. The ache between his legs as he rolls his hips into you gently yet persistently, chasing his high but wanting it to last long beyond the confines of this singular moment.
It’s not just this one moment anymore though. “[First],” Satoru squeezes your hand tighter. “[First].”
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
Don’t leave me this time, Satoru gasps like a man starved for air before kissing you again desperately. Stay.
(When Satoru wakes up the next morning to you in his arms and playing with his hair at the base of his neck, he feels like could cry. He nestles into your chest with a tired grin, “morning.”)
viii. anchor
Gojou Itsuki, that’s the name staring back at him.
Satoru loves when it’s his birthday. Until Itsuki was born it was arguably the best day in the universe. The importance of birthdays tends to titter on the rope of priorities, but it’s the one day of the year when the people important to him would pop up to say ‘hi’. Even people from the past. An old teacher he used to drive crazy but always said he thought Satoru had a lot of potential.
His mom still sent him a birthday text even if most of their exchanges are dry the rest of the year.
Even his students will tip in to get him a card and some sort of celebratory gift on December 7th.
December 7th lost a bit of its shine when you exited from his life. With you and Itsuki both in it, it shines tenfold.
It’s just the light is too blinding when Satoru takes out his last present of a plain envelope and he sees Gojou Itsuki written in bold and clear text.

Happy Birthday
Tumblr media
Slytherin House/Draco Malfoy x Slytherin Male Reader
A/N: This was requested over on our Wattpad. This was originally head-canons but it didn't flow properly, so I hope this is okay. I know literally nothing about other students in Slytherin so it's probably not accurate (at all) so any feedback is appreciated.
Waking up in the Slytherin House on your birthday is great. Slytherin's, contrary to popular belief, aren't all that rude if you're on their good side. Though it might also help being one of the most well known Slytherins.
You're woken up by someone softly nudging you, the muffled sound of your name just being audible. As you start to properly wake, you recognize the voice. You turn, coming face to face with Draco. "Good morning." You mumble out a 'Morning' before Draco places a quick kiss to your lips.
"Happy Birthday." He whispers against your lips before lifting off the bed, softly tugging at your arm. "Now get up, today's your special day." You playfully grumble as you sit up, Draco pulling you out of your bed. "Go get dressed and then come down, I planned a little something for you." He kisses you once more before leaving the dormitories.
Once putting on your robes, you walked down into the common room. A large group of students, including Draco, were standing around a table filled with gifts, chatting away as they, you assumed, waited for you.
Once reaching the group, you realized it was most of your friends from your house. One of your closest friends, Pansy, was the first to give you a gift, she grabbed it off the table and handed it over to you. "Open mine first, I'm sure you'll love it." You take the neatly wrapped gift from the dark-haired girl. Thanking her as you open it, your eyes fall upon a familiar book.
Pansy's smirk grows at your growing smile. "Merlin Pansy, thank you so much." It was a book you had had a quick read through while shopping through Diagon Alley with Pansy, it being too expensive to buy then. "I knew you'd like it." After Pansy, the others start to offer their own gifts.
It hits breakfast time before you're able to open all the gifts, so you apparate them to your dorm before leaving, thanking everyone as you make your way out.
During the day, you were stopped by many students, most of them being in your own house. Word of your birthday must've gotten around, students wishing you a 'Happy Birthday' as you went about your day.
Your classes were made easier by the students offering you answers or offering to do things for you. You thanked them but didn't take the help unless you absolutely needed it, still appreciative of the thought.
And not too long later, dinner rolled around. After making it to the Great Hall, you walked over to the Slytherin table. Once taking a seat next to Draco, he flicked his wand at the spot in front of you on the table. A portion of your favourite meal appears, as well as a cupcake of your favourite flavour.
You turn to the blonde beside you, thanking him with a kiss before enjoying your food. Pansy had stopped you before you ate the cupcake though, placing a candle on the top of it. She waved her wand near the wick, a small flame lighting it.
The group around you sang 'Happy Birthday'. Once finishing, you blew out the candle, pulling it out of the desert and resting it on a napkin. You thanked them all, telling them how appreciative of them you were.
~~~~~
When leaving the Dining Hall, you were stopped by none other than your boyfriend, Draco. He told you to follow him, and that your birthday wasn't quite over yet. You stayed by his side as he directed the two of you, conversations about nothing filling the halls as you two walked.
It wasn't long until you had arrived, Draco opening the doors to the empty astronomy tower. He guided you over to the edge, moving the telescope as he looked up at the stars. He looked back down to you a few seconds later, grasping your hands in his before speaking. "Happy Birthday, Y/N."
His smile grows wider as he reaches for his pocket, bringing out a small gold box. He takes your hand again and places it in your palm, waiting for you to open it. He starts to speak up as you open it. "I know it's not much, but I-" "I love it. Thank you, Draco." In the box lay two silver rings, in the shape of serpents; it had small emeralds scattered over the serpents scales and the words 'I Love You' engraved on the inside.
"They're promise rings." You could hear the smile in Draco's voice. "They're beautiful." You look back up at Draco, leaning in for a quick kiss before pulling the rings out. Draco eagerly picks up one of the rings, slotting it onto your ring finger. You take the other one out of the box, doing the same to his own finger.
"I love you, Y/N."
"I love you too, Draco. Thank you for today."
A/N: I've got a few requests I'm writing right now, so if you've requested something, it might come out a little late, so sorry!
part 1 (here!) ✩ part 2 ✩ part 3 ✩ part 4 ✩ part 5 ✩ part 6 ✩ part 7 (final part)
Tumblr media
Tonowari was like the ocean. Like the Way of the Water your Sa’nok has taught you multiple times, your memories of him had no beginning. You cannot remember how you first met or how you came to be friends. To you, he was always there beside you. Something that astonished you to this day, was a miracle that he had the patience for a wild child like you. From your blurry lines of childhood when he was still an heir until your adulthood when he has become an Olo’eyktan, he was still with you.
He is as gentle as the sea’s soft waves hitting your feet on a fine day, you noticed one day out of the blue when you were younger. As an heir to the position of Olo’eyktan, he was busy with his responsibilities early on. Every day, his early mornings would be filled with studies as his father would teach him the basics of his duties and his mother would teach him the basics of healing. At first, it made you happy for him. He, an Olo’eyktan heir, was finally starting his studies and it would be soon until he becomes one.
“That’s wonderful news, Tonowari!” You say as you hugged him tightly when you first heard the news. He returned the hug with a chuckle. You pull back quickly and looked at him with wonder and excitement in your eyes.
“I am so happy for you!”
“I am glad to hear that,” He raised a smile, almost in relief at your words. “I thought you would be opposed to it since we would be spending time less.”
“Why would I? You would soon become an Olo’eyktan, the one who will lead and guide our people. It brings me great honour and pride to have my friend as the Olo’eyktan.” You scoffed lightly at his words.“No distance or time would change our friendship. Besides, I will have special rights in the future, no?”
He laughed joyously, his eyes closing for a brief moment before looking at your eyes so deeply. He wrapped his arm around you and rested his forehead against yours. “I hold no promises.”
You giggled. You squeezed his arm thrice.
“I see you, Tonowari.”
“I see you, [Name].”
Months passed by, and you two settled into a rhythm of your own. Him with his duties and you with your own. It was not long after Tonowari’s start of education that you had begun yours as well. Your Sa’nok saw your talent in arts, you had picked up weaving as a hobby after seeing her weave clothes for you and your father after a few times. You always sang and hum under your breath the songs of Eywa and the people. You found joy in dancing with the others. You never noticed these things about yourself but you were happy it did because if it didn't, perhaps you would have felt lonely. With nothing to do and with no one to be with.
You would never dare to admit this out loud, but without Tonowari, you did feel a bit lonely. You had made new friends as you were taught the arts of your clan with other students as well, but Tonowari is a different type of friend, you think. There is a difference between a day without him and a day without them, more so days without him and just a night without them as you would see your new friends the next morning, anyway.
It was not like meetings between you two have become rare, but it was less than it used to be. Your eyes would meet each other's sometimes if luck would be on your side and your lessons would be shared, but even then, you two can only smile and wave for a bit as the teachers stop for no one.
You did not like this lonely feeling. There is a certain ache in your little heart whenever you think about him and you did not like it at all. You are happy for both on your journeys to become who you wanted to be but you are not happy with the distance and the time you thought it would not affect your friendship. Did it affect only you? Were you the only one who wishes for more time between you two? To be beside one another once more?
You are suddenly reminded of your lessons.
“Everything belongs to Eywa. There is nothing that belongs to us for we only take what is given to us by the Great Mother. We are only lent Her divine creations. Borrowed.” Your teacher once said. “Selfishness is to take what is not yours. Greedy is to want beyond what is borrowed to you from Eywa.”
“Selfishness and greed corrupt your essences. It is not right to be this way towards our Great Mother for her gifts to us, which is why we must…?” He trailed off to let you and the other students finish his sentence.
“Always be grateful and thankful to Mother Eywa!”
You have done the opposite of what must be done.
Selfish. So selfish. When had you become so greedy? Shame filled your core but it did not erase the longing for him. You are horrified by this feeling. You did not want anyone to know. You dare not tell your mother and father about this, for fear of disappointing them or raising such a self-absorbed child. And you swore to yourself not to tell Tonowari especially because you knew him, perhaps he would not see you as egoistic as you are but he would be burdened with your useless wants.
In shame, you tried getting him out of your mind by focusing more on your studies. You spent more time with your friends, giggling with one another as you talked about whatever came to mind. You spent more time with your family, hearing your mother's boasts about you to your father while she tends his wounds after a successful hunt. You would then hear your father's childish cries as he clings onto to mother and you.
As you have grown closer with others, you have grown distant from him. Days turned into weeks of your successful avoidance. You have seen his figure here and there, but a glimpse of him is enough for you to turn away. In communal activities, you enter last as you begged your family to enter late.  You stay the farthest away from him and stay with your other friends and family instead. The ache in your heart comes back stronger as you ignore his hot-pleading and concerned gazes and attempts to go near you before you leave each time.
Oh, Eywa, you begged, I am so sorry. Please forgive my thoughts and the ugliness I have borne in my soul.
Please let him know nothing of this.
Please do not let him see me.
It was early morning and you stood alone not too far from your clan in the sea with your feet touching its water. The sun had not risen yet so not many had woken up yet, allowing you to be alone. You did not like being lonely but here you are, awake in the early hours just so you could be by yourself.
You tried to focus on the ocean. You closed your eyes and felt the soft waves hitting your toes, almost caressing them but you are reminded of Tonowari’s soft touches, his gentle pats on your back as he comforts you, on your shoulder as he tries to bring you back to reality, and on your head just because. You tried to think about the warmth of the water, but you are reminded of Tonowari’s warmth instead as he hugs and cuddles with you, as he holds your hand in your adventures, and as he simply stays right beside you.
You snap your eyes back open in a panic. Oh. Oh no.
You felt a touch on your shoulder and you whipped your head around as you breathe in a gasp. There, you found the subject of your shame. Your selfishness. Your horror. You immediately took a step back and further into the ocean, but Tonowari did not let you escape him as he quickly grabbed your arm. His beautiful pale blue eyes which were always soft like he was incapable of glaring stared deeply into yours. You look away in fear of seeing him. You did not want to know what he think of you so you looked away just as you have always done.
“[Name].” Not once have you forgotten his voice that was neither too soft nor too stern. It was just right as he conversed among the people of your clan. His voice was smooth enough for the people to easily approach him for anything be it troubles they faced or simple light conversation about their days. But now, it is low and thick full of shaky emotions you do not want to know hidden in his clear tone.
“Tonowari. Please, let go of me–”
“No. Not until you tell me the reason for your hatred towards me.” Hatred? What on earth was he saying? You turned your head and looked at him in disbelief.
“What? I do not hate you, Tonowari.” You say.
“Lies. You are angry with me. You do not want to see me anymore. You do not want to be with me.” There is hurt in his voice. In just a few words, the defences you built carefully to shield yourself away from him had shattered. What was supposed to be anger, there is only pain and the same longing you have for him.
“I do, Tonowari! I want to be with you badly! Eywa knows how much I missed you so deeply.” Your outburst surprised him greatly, seeing his eyes widen at this.
“Every day, I wished for us to be together once more. I was always lonely without you. No one compares to you, your absence hurts more than no other. Eywa knows all I wanted was you.” You began sobbing, finally letting the truth out of your body. “But it is not right.”
You pushed him away but he never let go of your arms. He never did despite your insistence to be away.
“I was being selfish. It is not right. You are not mine to be selfish with. You are the future Olo’eyktan and I am nothing.” The shame burns hot. You wanted to run away and never appear again before him or your parents or your people. “So please, leave me alone and I promise not to be ever greedy once more.”
He was silent for a few seconds, but to you, it felt like a long time. Your heart raced in thoughts that he must have hated you now. Disappointed in you now. But his palm you remembered as smooth and didn’t know when it had turned rough, caressed your cheek ever so gently and you look at him, finally seeing him.
And oh, how beautiful he is.
The sun was rising. Its soft golden rays hit his big figure that had grown bigger than yours, that you missed in your avoidance of him. The sun highlighted his stripes markings that you missed tracing against his skin. His freckles glow so brightly. He held your hand with his free one and rested your forehead against his.
“I am Tonowari, and you are [Name]. Not Olo’eyktan, not nothing.” He says while staring at you. He squeezes your hand thrice.
“I see you, [Name].”
“I see you, Tonowari.”
Like the sea on a fine day, he is gentle. Like its waves hitting against your legs, his caresses on you are soft. Like its warmth, his’ comforts you with his presence alone. Like the sound of its water surging on the shore, he is neither too soft nor too loud, just enough for you to hear him completely.
Like the ocean, Tonowari is gentle.
The Tale of the Lone Glaze Lily
A/N: hey guys!! Long time no see! After a whole year of not writing, I decided to go ahead and get back to it with a new fandom that I recently got into! It’s my first work for Genshin Impact, so I hope anyone reading this is satisfied! Thank you so much @honeystevie for being the best beta reader and for hearing me drone about this for god knows how long!
Summary: You, the goddess of song, decided to celebrate Morax’s birthday one day in Mt. Tianheng with a glaze lily. Who would have thought thousands of years later the memory was as clear as day, with a lone glaze lily yet to bloom standing in its place?
Pairing: Zhongli x god!fem!reader
Word Count: 2.4 K
Content/Content Warnings: angst, mentions of death (reader), fluff, a tiny deviation from the lord to fit the plot
Tumblr media
“Morax!” You cheer gleefully, skipping towards his figure before cupping his cheeks with your warm hands. “I have something to show you tonight, if you’re willing to join me.” Morax couldn’t help the smile that graced his face at the sound of excitement that laces your voice. Guizhong couldn’t help but laugh at the two of you as she collects the now empty cups from him and Cloud Retainer, who had paid the two a short visit in honor of Morax’s birthday.
“I relieved him of his duties tonight, he’s all yours.” Guizhong says to you, before greeting Morax a happy birthday once more for the night.
“Lead the way,” he chuckles, his fingers laced with yours as you walk to Mount Tianheng begins. One that is filled with mindless conversation and laughter until you abruptly halt into a stop.
“I need you to close your eyes for me.” You say quickly, trying your best to cover his eyes with your own hands. He chuckles at this futile attempt.
“My dear,” he starts teasingly before closing his eyes. “You must think of much more clever ways to execute your plan.” A snicker cannot be held back by him as you hurl insults towards him as you guide him by the hand.
“Alright, Morax. Open your eyes for me.” And so he does, and the sight is one to behold: one that overlooks the unusually calm sea, with the stars of Teyvat and Liyue’s mountains providing a glamorous backdrop. “Isn’t it beautiful? I’ve been eyeing this place for ages, and I thought I could share it with you tonight on your birthday.” You say, nervously biting your lip as you analyze your lover’s handsome features as you sit yourselves down on the blanket you had laid out, never letting go of your hold on his hand.
Morax was speechless, for aside from the natural beauty surrounding you two, was a bottle of osmanthus wine alongside dishes that Marchosius had made. But one thing had caught his eye: a bud of a glaze lily. You chuckle nervously when you notice this, tightening your hold on his hand. You start to feel warm out of embarrassment, closing your eyes to ignore the gaze of your lover as your lips part to sing. Morax recognizes the song as the one you have always sang as you pranced through the flower fields alone, lips curving at the sound of the familiar melody as he looks at your embarrassed expression. His free hand could not help but gently cup your cheek. His smile widens seeing your eyes open wide in surprise as they meet his amber ones, shock being evident as your ears recognize his own deep voice singing the song alongside you.
Shock then turns into glee as you two sing the song together, feeling the rough pad of his thumb gently caress your cheek. It doesn’t take long until the familiar fragrance of the flower fills the air. The only time Morax felt you let go of his hand was to pluck the now bloomed flower and to tuck it into his hair. He sees you smile bashfully along with amusement, and the prime adeptus’ heart flutters. A once unfamiliar emotion now frequently visits the moment you are the center of his attention.
“You have sung this beautiful melody many times over, and have taught it to our people of the Guili Assembly. Is it wrong for me to want to sing it alongside you?” He asks curiously, watching as your eyes try to avoid him as you think of a response back.
“No, it’s just–” you start, letting your fingers entangle with his locks of hair. “Your voice, you singing my song is a gift to me, yet tonight was meant for me to be able to shower you with gratitude.” You giggle as he brings your body closer to his, your back against his chest as you overlook the sea below. The god is pensive as he nuzzles himself into your neck, his arms embracing you tightly as the coastal wind blows through you two.
“Y/N,” he calls affectionately, his soft and rich voice close to your ear. “This time has never been easy for the Guili Assembly, for the people that reside in it. It was not till Guizhong and I met that I began to see the vastness of this world. But more importantly, it was not until I met you in the field of glaze lilies that I began to see the world that you do.” He hears you giggle at his display of affection and feels your fingers gently trace the patterns that adorn his arms. “It’s true!” He huffs, “My ultimate point is, as long as I am still a reason to make you laugh, to make you smile, then my heart will constantly be full.”
You nibbled on your bottom lip, unable to process his words. Despite the intimate moments you two have shared, you still fail to acknowledge that Morax truly had only set his gaze upon you and willingly chose you and depended on you the way you had with him. Admitting that you were rendered speechless by his words, you opted to bring his hand to your lips, placing gentle kisses on each of his knuckles. “Morax. My Morax.” Joy is evident in your tone as you relax into his body, allowing the warmth to fully surround you.
Birthdays to Morax were a useless concept that humans adored. It definitely should not have to apply to beings like him, for his life span is so wide that generations of humans come and go in the snap of a finger. He used to scowl at the mere idea of joining humans, for it was as he argued, “was not part of the contract between him and humans”. However, seeing you actively celebrate with humans despite your age, and despite watching them come and go has made him think; maybe it was okay to commemorate the work done by him and the adepti, and be able to take a quick break. To step back and appreciate what has been done before he works again. He didn’t understand until this very moment as time stills in this intimate moment shared between the two of you. “Let’s stay like this,” he murmurs, rough fingers gently finding their way to your chin, allowing your eyes to meet as he repeats his request. “Let’s stay like this for a while.” His eyes marvel at your beauty as he notices the stars reflecting in your gentle and loving gaze. His gaze flickers between your eyes and your lips, unaware you were doing the same, wishing for this same request. You offer him a smile as your eyes close before you feel a gentle warmth on your lips.
A relieved sigh leaves Morax’s lips as his lips intertwined with yours, a selfish hold on you as he silently wishes for his eternity to consist of moments like this with you. “I love you, my songbird.” He murmurs affectionately, earning a hum from you in return before pulling away ever so slightly, breathless from the needy kiss.
“I love you too, Morax,” you breathe, “May your birthdays be filled with laughter and song. Just like tonight.”
That is now all but a memory he clenches so close to his chest, thousands of years later, in a new Liyue, without you. Each and every birthday he has experienced since your passing has caused him to reminisce of how things were before. This year has proven to be no different until the traveler and Paimon unknowingly snap him out of his reverie.
“Zhongli!” Paimon calls out, her arm waving as the man looks back at them with a kind smile. “It’s us! We wanted to see you for your special day! See? We even have your letter here!”
“Traveler, Paimon. What a surprise to see you too tonight,” He jokes with a small chuckle before motioning to the empty seats by the table. “Would you like to take a seat and have dinner beside me? My treat.”
“You know Paimon can never resist an offer for good food!” She squeals, feet kicking in the air as she takes her place beside the traveler.
It doesn’t take long for the three to squeeze in a short conversation after the orders are in, one that was, as always, leading to the retired archon to showcase his knowledge of Liyue’s rich history.
Iron Tongue Tian cuts their conversation short as he catches their attention as well as the other customers. “My dear customers, if it’s alright, I will now tell the tale of the Lone Glaze Lily.”
The crowd has completely hushed by the time he starts, even the traveler had looked upon the storyteller with such interest as he tells of yet another tale of Rex Lapis and Guizhong and the Guili Assembly, as well as how the goddess of dust had a particular liking to the now rare flower.
What the traveling pair had failed to see at first, was how the amber eyes of the former archon fell as the story went on.
By the time applause and cheers had arisen from the story’s conclusion, the traveler had looked at Zhongli and saw his seat now vacant. “Hey, where did Zhongli go?!” Paimon questions, worry evident in the floating companion’s voice as the food they ordered finally is set on the table. “He said it was his treat! Who has the Mora to pay for all this?!”
The traveler looks around and sees the ex-Archon take his usual leisurely stroll through Liyue Harbor, yet spots that it is as if he’s in a trance. The god strolled through Liyue Harbor, past Yujing Terrace, and up into Mt. Tianheng, where now sits a singular glaze lily. Planted by him, of course, in remembrance of you, yet it had not bloomed for ages. The hustle and bustle of Liyue Harbor is no longer present and is now replaced with the sound of birds and crickets as he sits down beside it, placing his offering of tea.
“Good evening, Y/N. My dear.”
Morax shuts his eyes tightly, desperately even, trying his hardest to remember you as if he just saw you yesterday. As if he had just met you singing to the glaze lilies. As if you had brought him up here for the first time. Anything to avoid the recurring painful memory he carries all too often. Taking a deep breath he opens his eyes and looks at the glaze lily before looking out at the harbor. “So much has happened this year,” he starts. “Everything I have thought about has been carried out. The era of the adepti has come to an end. But,” he halts, recalling how you willingly mingled with the people with such joy and little to no hesitation. “You must be looking down on this nation proudly. You probably even sensed it before I did, didn’t you?” As expected, silence is what he is met with, just as the millennia before and the millennia before.
“I see you almost everywhere, everyday.” The more he recognizes your songs still being sung by the various people in Liyue, the less he fights the tears that fall from his eyes. Only a tiny bitter laugh escapes his lips as he looks up to the skies of Teyvat, as if he’s searching for something. For someone. Hoping that they listen to his chatter.
“Today they told of the glaze lily you had planted for me here, dear. It’s quite evident the history of it had eroded and changed to the way it is told today,” he muses. “Thousands of years have passed, and yet the misconceptions that come with Guizhong and I as leaders of Liyue’s people continue on. Even our friend the traveler believes this to be true.”
He gazes on the flower, carefully observing it as it sways in the winter wind. “If only Liyue knew how much you offered to its people,” he sniffs, vision blurring as hot, salty tears stain his cheeks. “And what you have done for me.”
He no longer cares that these tears continue to fall, or if anyone watches them at all, for the sight of Liyue Harbor occupies his attention, and how you would adore the twinkling lights that flicker within all the buildings and shops. You would have loved people watching with him, seeing the Fishmongers drink together in joy or couples eyeing the waterfalls in Yujing Terrace. He’d even be willing to bet his last Mora that you would take him by the hand and take him back down to see if you can manage to be seated at the Pearl Galley and watch an opera. He would be willing to see you do this for millennia to come as long as he was beside you. He can only hope you would think that he did a good job. That he can finally call it a day and let the age of humans commence.
He can only hope that by having planted this glaze lily, that you have watched it all from here with a proud smile.
“Zhongli?” A voice calls softly, causing him to once again return to reality, turning his tear-stained face to see the traveler again.
“Ah, traveler,” Zhongli greets, wiping his cheeks with his gloved hands. “My apologies for my abrupt departure. I had to…think over some things.”
“That’s what I wanted to ask you about. What’s wrong? Did something put you deep in thought?” The traveler questions, taking a seat next to Zhongli.
Zhongli could not help but look over to the bud beside him. A small faint smile graces his face upon the realization that you can still live on despite the age of humans commencing.
And it can start with what he does best.
“If you can indulge me on this “birthday” traveler, I would like to tell you the true story of how this lone glaze lily sitting here beside me came to be.”
And so the traveler sits and listens as the retired archon once again recollects his memories of you, telling of how you have crossed paths with him to the songs you have left behind for the people of Liyue to sing. The traveler can even argue that genuine smiles appeared on Zhongli’s face as he kept talking about you.
If the traveler had looked over Zhongli’s shoulder as he sang the song you two sang that one night, they might even see the lone glaze lily changing beside him.
Its blue petals had spread, opening itself to hear the familiar song once again.
[REQUESTS OPEN]
[1.6k] or, in which james potter experiences the joys of muggle weed for the first time in his life.
.
It was two in the morning when you heard the boys stumbling into the Potter Manor.
The click of the door and creaky hinges, the hushed whispers and lost giggles, the scuffling shoes and the heavy footsteps. They were not subtle in any sense, and you couldn’t help but let the sentiment warm your heart. They were stupid but they were your boys, and you adored that even years later they were as childish and uncaring about the world as they were in their first years at Hogwarts.
It wasn’t unusual for you all to spend the last few weeks of summer at Potter Manor. The family adored you like you were their own, and something about spending long summer days laid out in the woods just beyond the manor, spiked drinks and river swims just filling the days before you returned to school beat any other vacation.
You had spent most of the day huddled away in the Potter library, cups of tea and a cosy blanket settled on your lap. The boys had decided to take a day out in London, leaving early in the morning kissing Euphemia on cheek and promising they would return at a reasonable time.
Which they clearly didn’t keep.
You made it to the doorway, slipping the door open enough to peak your head out as they made it to the top of the stairs—and the sight wasn’t one you expected.
Sirius and Remus flanking either side of your very giggly and very clumsy boyfriend, both boys a little dazed themselves but far less gone than James.
“Merlin,” you murmured as you pushed the door open further, stepping out into the hallway as all three boys lifted their heads up at your voice.
“BABY!”
“Oh fucking hell—”
“Prongs!”
Your brows raised in amusement as you watched your boyfriend try to wiggle out his friends’ arms, his gaze set on you and nothing else on his mind except getting towards you.
“What did you give—oh, hello!”
You barely had a moment to even process the huge boy running towards you before his arms were around you, hoisting you a few inches of the ground as he held you to his chest.
“We, uh, may have…possibly…maybe…” Sirius began, a sheepish smile on his lips as he glanced a bit warily towards his friend.
“Sirius gave him weed,” Remus piped in.
Sirius spluttered.
“And he may have had a drink or two.”
“Moony, what the fuck!”
“He’s very gone,” Remus added, a sly smirk on his lips that told you he wasn’t as wasted as the other two. And it also told you he enjoyed winding up Sirius a lot more than people assumed.
“He wouldn’t shut up about you either,” Sirius grumbled as he pressed his fingers to his temples. “I love you but—”
“Hey, hey,” James’ head popped up from your shoulder, eyes narrowing behind his glasses as he stared at his friend. “Only I can say that.”
Sirius raised his hands in mock defence but there was a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Guess there’s no chance I can get a smooch then?” he teased, hooded eyes making a point of glancing over at you.
“No,” James muttered with a pout.
“Piss off, Pads, stop messing with him,” Remus scolded lightly, even if he was thoroughly amused himself by the way James clung onto you. “It’ll be better in the morning when he remembers it.”
Sirius’ grin widened. “You’re absolutely right, Moony.”
“You both are trouble,” you said as your hands fisted the material of your boyfriend’s sweater, keeping a hold on him in fear that if you let go he would just run off. Drunk James was notorious for being a runner, you had no idea where stoned James stood in the spectrum.
“You love us,” Sirius sang.
“Yeah, yeah,” you waved him off but you didn’t deny it. You loved your boys, you loved each of them dearly. It just so happened you loved James in a way that was a little different to the way you loved Sirius and Remus.
Both boys quickly disappeared into their rooms, leaving you to guide a giggly James back towards his room in hopes of not waking up his parents who were just down the hall. It was surprisingly easy to get him to cooperate when you cracked the code—then again, he was James Potter. The boy would move a mountain just to kiss you, let alone be the centre of your attention.
“C’mere,” James whined as he tried to pull your body towards him, not even letting you step away from the bed he just settled on as you stood between his legs, his arms wrapped around your thighs and trapping you against him. “I missed you.”
“I saw you this morning, Jamie,” you teased, your hands settled on his broad shoulders as he rested his head against your stomach.
“Yeah but,” he let out a long, exaggerated sigh. “That was a long time ago.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” he grumbled and he lifted his head, chin pressing into your stomach and his wild, unruly curls falling in front of his eyes. He let out a small hum as your hands worked through the curls, pushing his hair back until his bright eyes were staring back at you, a little red and dazed but still so pretty. “I don’t like being away from you.”
“That sounds unhealthy,” you remarked but the comment was light-hearted. James being affectionate and a little clingy was not something you were not used to. The boy practically lived and breathed every day to tell you how much he cared about you.
But this just felt a little different.
“‘S not,” James said with a small huff, his large hands squeezing the back of your thighs as though he was scared you would step away from him. “You’re my future. I don’t wanna be anywhere else but with you.”
And you didn’t know if it was your own cynical heart or maybe your unreasonably high standards, but there was never a time in your life where you expected a man to make you swoon. But in came James Potter with his pretty words and promises tied up in a bow and you couldn’t help yourself.
Your cheeks flushed and your skin heated as he flashed you a dopey smile with his words. Sometimes you weren’t sure he knew just how much he affected you, that those pretty promises made your heart beat wildly in your chest and remind you just what it’s like to fall in love with someone as adoring and devoted as James.
“You can’t just say stuff like that, Potter,” you cleared your throat, one hand raising to cup his cheek and your stomach flipped a little at the way he nuzzled himself into your touch. “Gonna give a girl high expectations.”
“I mean it,” he said and his arms tightened around you. He turned his head to the side and pressed a chaste kiss against the palm of your hand. “‘m gonna marry you one day, just you wait and see.”
Your cheeks were burning hotter than you could even imagine. “You not even gonna ask first?”
“I will,” James nodded with a dreamy sigh, his eyes drooping a little as the exhaustion started to settle deep into his bones and muscles. “Gonna get you the prettiest ring and ask you at the—”
“Alright there, pretty boy, time for bed,” you quickly interrupted, hands falling down to take a hold of his as you pulled your body away from him, despite his attempts to keep you close. “Trust me, you’ll thank me in the morning.”
You didn’t try and push your luck with the sleepy boy, deciding it was just best to get him into his pyjamas and hope for the best. You took his glasses off and gently placed them on his bedside table before making your way around the bed, to your side.
But a hand shot out to stop you.
“Where are you going?” His voice sounded so small, it made your heart clench a little. “Don’t go.”
“I’m not going anywhere, baby, just getting into bed,” you told him softly, thumb running over the back of his hand to reassure him.
“Then get in here,” he said and you could almost imagine the confused furrowed eyebrows on his face despite the lack of light in the room.
“James–”
But the boy was as stubborn and insistent as he was when he was sober, and clearly just as strong as he yanked you towards him. The action was unexpected and left you ungraciously falling on top of him with a thud. You tried to scramble away so you weren’t squishing him but his arms caging you in prevented you from doing so.
“James, let me go.”
“No.”
“At least let me get comfortable.”
“...fine.”
And with a little reshuffling and shared kisses, you laid on the bed with your boyfriend wrapped around you and his sleepy voice lulling you asleep as he spoke, his voice trailing off the closer he got to falling asleep himself.
Whispered hopes and dreams tickling the skin of your neck where his face was nuzzled close as he spoke about weddings and futures, dreams and desires. A future with James Potter was one you’d imagine would leave you happier than you had ever been.
A future with James Potter was everything you wanted and more, it was everything he had ever wished for.
And when the sun rose again and James was no longer spouting every thought that crossed his mind, he knew without a doubt he planned to spend the rest of his life with you, starting with a ring he wanted to put on your finger the second you walked out of Hogwarts with him by your side.
