So based on your posts I believe your a biologist (biology adjacent background at least, know about animals?) serious question about the Pokémon world for you. Do you think animals exist there?

In the earlier show and iterations it seemed like there were animals (like there are here even if they weren’t exactly featured) and Pokémon - the cooler animals that had abilities and could kill ppl and ppl were forced to respect. The newer iterations (probably bc so many Pokémon have been introduced) pretty much seem to show that there are only Pokémon ex. In the first series when Ash and gang visit the Cerulean gym and see the aquarium it looks like a bunch of fish and then some Pokémon (I think there was only a handful of gen 1 one water Pokémon so that makes sense) but now in journeys underwater scenes will include dozens of water Pokémon from all gens with no generic looking fish (which also makes sense in terms of gen continuity and not needing generic fish to fill the water anymore)

I personally think there are animals and bugs and Pokémon are the “more special” ones. Bc I’m pretty sure ppl eat meat there but could not imagine eating Pokémon would be ok. Idk the whole thing is insane to me. Some Pokémon are classified as “fire-Xanimal” - ie Litten being fire-cat Pokemon but how do they know what a cat is? If animals don’t exist??? Or my other theory is animals existed and were slowly replaced/evolved into the Pokémon we see now

I am indeed a biologist!! A river ecologist, at the present, but my background is in general biology! And I do have many thoughts on this topic 🤣

Obviously, in the first couple seasons of the anime, there were some “regular” animals included—things like the fish from Cerulean—and I do agree that that’s pretty much only because they didn’t have enough pokemon yet to fill the scenes out. (Also because in… 1998? Or so? When that episode came out, they had no way of anticipating just how huge pokemon would be, over 20 years and 900 pokemon later 🤣) BUT when I write the pokemon world, I write as if pokemon are the only animals. (Though, funny enough, there are plant pokemon, but also “regular” plants.) As for the meat they eat… eh. I honestly just don’t think about it too much 🤣 synthetic meat maybe. Plant burgers 🤣

The whole Pokédex thing—meowth being the “scratch cat” pokemon and pikachu being the “electric mouse” pokemon and things like that… I just see that as a way for players and viewers to be able to relate to the new pokemon they’re being introduced to, you know? Though I obviously don’t think it’s wrong to headcanon that there are regular animals as well as pokemon—it’s just not how I write the world! (Of course, there are exceptions to my rule: coral are technically animals, and I would have no problem writing about there being a coral reef in the pokemon world, populated by regular coral as well as corsola, for instance 🤣)

Although I am a scientist, I do take pokemon with a heaping grain of fantasy salt 🤣 though what I think is most interesting is the idea of evolution (the scientific kind, not the pokemon kind—man, that terminology would get confusing in-fiction) and taxonomy in the pokemon world—even if it doesn’t make much real sense, considering pokemon are designed to be the Coolest, not… the most realistic for the ecological niche they might fill. God I’d love to be a pokemon professor.

Simple Tritype Finding Redux

So remember how a while ago I made that post about how to find your tritype, which was somewhat popular, but also kind of rambly and theoretical? 

Apparently the peeps at the Big Hormone Podcast had an episode which did sort  of the same thing of looking at the “setting” of each individual center, but they expressed it much more concisely & punchy & much more useful

So, for those who don’t have time to listen to 2 hour of pod-cast (which honestly, includes me too, I should be doing something else rn), here’s a summary: 

Heart Center

2 fix

basically more warm compared to other ppl with the same core type 

casually touchy-feely, way more likely to hug, put their arms on you etc. (this can be very obvious in cultures where that’s less usual - ie, easier to spot on a North American man than a French woman)

4 fix

more guarded compared to others of same core type

stresses their tastes & preferences (ie, rant about music they really don’t like)

suspicious of hype & overly popular things - some tedecy to be the contrarian voice in a conversation

3 fix

especially if it’s the 2nd fix this can show as being more positive and/or better at self-motivating and a tendency to follow trends or fads

but it’s just as likely to show as just less obvious emotional coloration, or just adaptiveness/ social perceptiveness, or even ‘icyness’ - so you’ll often arrive at this by principle of exclusion.

2 Methods/ ‘cheats’ you can use here: 

Typing someone else: 

Apparently useful question here is to look at how people introduce themselves, cause the heart fixes represent different parts of identity & it’s all about what someone stresses. For example, the people who will open with something relationship-related (”Hi I’m soandso, I’m a parent”, “I’m a wife”) are probably 2-fixes. If they start out mentioning their job or some kind of accomplishment (”I’m a doctor”, ”I climbed X mountain recently”) they probably have a 3 fix. Whereas a person with 4 fix will not reference anything external but mention their tastes, interests and sentiments. (eg, “Hi, I’m Soandso, I like reading, writing & nerd stuff”, “I live on a farm where I keep peacocks.”)

Typing yourself: 

Think of this as a ‘should’ that you feel. A person with a fix doesn’t run around all day helping people (especially if their core type is something very different), but they might feel that they should be a source of help. Someone with a 4 fix might feel they ‘should’ be suspicious of anything that’s too hyped and popular, while someone with a 3 fix might kick themselves for not mentioning some archievement to their friends when this might have impressed them. 

Head Center

Basically, just look at what they do when they don’t know something. Like, imagine for example that your little sister has a question and you don’t already know the answer. Do you immediately ask someone, google it or point her to a trusted source? Six. Do you first speculate based on your preexisting knowledge & maybe then google it if you’re not confident? Five. Do you list multiple ideas for what the answer might be or where to find the info? Seven. 

6 fix

Checks external sources first, thinks second, may then corroborate the conclusion before accepting it

try not just to get the answer, but a sense of who thinks what. May warn you against other PoVs - this can lead to bringing morals/ politics into it even when it seems out of place. 

Other people need to learn to look at sources and ‘cui bono’ questions at some point, six fix ppl often do this immediately & pay attention to sources from the first. 

At best you get 15 year olds with scarily excellent bullshit detectors, at worst, middle aged ppl whose opinions are entirely copypasted. 

5 fix

Reverse of 6: Always speculates first based on whatever knowledge they already have, and checks sources second, if at all. Internal resources dominate.  (eg if the question is about tigers, they might say ”It’s like this in cats, so it might be similar. It fits with how Tigers live in jungles, too”)

Might just make a theory & throw it out there to see what happens

Might bring up a dark/macabre/disturbing topic without realizing. (6: “Are you defending cocaine addicts?” 7: ””Please don’t talk about murder on the table, we’re eating!”)

Tend to look for a point of distinction or underlying principle

7 fix

List multiple ideas or facts rapidfire 

while the other two sit down to launch into a treatise, the 7 either keeps the engagement level high by focussing on the more exciting parts, or just moves on. 

Cares less about cohesion, hanging on to a point or arriving  at a final conclusion so there can be a ‘kaleidoscopic’, multi-perspective  quality to the answer

TK isn’t really paying attention to the TV; it’s on mute while he folds a massive amount of laundry on the bed – no one warned him how much clothing little boys dirty in a week. He looks over at the little boy in question, smiling softly as Luca sits up in the middle of his bed. Propped up with a couple of pillows like the king of the house he is, he plays some educational kiddie game on the iPad. His heart does a funny little thump at the proud smile on his son’s face when the animated cat on the game tells him he got his answer right.

TK leans over to see that today’s lesson is shapes and colors; Luca matched all of them correctly. “That’s great, bud!” he answers with a smile just as large as his boy’s. When they had first brought Luca home, he’d been sad and scared; now thankfully, there wasn’t a hint of that. Instead, his son is a little ball of sunshine, happy and thriving, bringing joy to his and Carlos’ lives every day with his presence.

“I smart, Dada,” Luca tells him seriously, and TK bites down on his lip to keep from chuckling at the expression on his face; it doesn’t stop him from smiling, though.

“The smartest, Luca,” he tells him just as serious. “The smartest boy ever.”

Luca gives him another smile, this one more bashful. “More?” he questions hopefully, staring up at him with doe eyes, and this time he gives in to the urge to laugh, letting out a soft chuckle. Luca knows his iPad time is running out; his smart little boy has learned quickly how to use his puppy dog eyes on him.

“One more,” he finally answers, his voice firm to show he means business. “Then we’re going into the kitchen to make cookies, okay? For Papa, when he comes home.”

Luca lights up at the mention of cookies, but even more so at the mention of Carlos. It makes TK proud and happy to see just how much their son loves his father. From the moment Luca came to live with them, he latched on to Carlos the most. Carlos had worried at first that he would feel left out, but for TK, it was a blessing to see the two loves of his life together. Luca loving and trusting Carlos above anyone else makes sense to TK because he feels the same way. He’s safest and most loved when he’s with his husband, so he understands his son’s devotion to Carlos perfectly.

He knows Luca loves him too, he doesn’t doubt that for one second, but there is no denying that Luca is Papa’s little boy through and through.

“Play your game, sweetheart,” he says softly, pointing at the iPad with his chin. “I’ll finish with the clothes, and then we’ll bake.”

Luca gives him a nod, his little finger already pressing on another game.

TK gets lost in the folding, humming along to the song from Luca’s game, it’s his life now. A few weeks ago, he was at the station working out, and it took him two full reps to realize his phone was on Luca’s nickelodeon playlist.

“Dada, look!” Luca shouts again, and TK looks over to his son, ready to congratulate him on another successful game when he realizes that Luca isn’t looking at his game but is instead looking at the TV, pointing at it.

“Papa!” he says excitedly, as TK lets out a small sound. Carlos is indeed on TV as a news reporter interviews him. Under Carlos is the headline about a hostage situation.

TK quickly grabs the remote to turn on the volume to the TV, sitting down on the bed when his legs feel weak. He holds out his arms to Luca, placing him on his lap when the little boy crawls over to him.

“Officer Reyes, can you explain what happened?” the reporter asks Carlos before pushing the mic in his face.

“At 13:05, the three suspects entered the bank with semi-automatic weapons. They demanded the bank tellers empty their drawers before opening the safety deposit room,” he explains. “One of the employees managed to press the silent alarm before everyone was forced to the ground. We had 22 hostages, including the bank workers.”

“Are they all safe, Officer Reyes?” the reporter questions.

“Yes, ma’am,” Carlos nods, his face serious. “We arrived at the scene five minutes after the alarm went off and managed to diffuse the situation without the exchange of gunfire. The suspects surrendered their guns and were taken into custody. Thankfully no one was hurt.”

“Thanks to heroes like you, Officer Reyes,” the reporter says, and TK watches as his husband goes pink in the face.

“Not a hero, ma’am,” Carlos answers with an awkward smile. “Just doing my job.”

“Dada, what happen?” Luca asks, looking up at him when the scene on the screen changes, and it’s no longer Carlos.

“Some bad men wanted to steal,” TK starts to explain, trying to choose his words wisely, not wanting to scared Luca.

“That’s bad,” Luca answers back. “Can’t take what’s not yours, have to ask first.”

TK nods, smiling down at his son, happy that lesson stuck after the last time Luca took a toy from one of his little friends at daycare. “That’s right, Luca. But these men just wanted to take what wasn’t theirs, and Papa stopped them.”

Luca looks at him with wide eyes. “Papa a hero?” he asks, probably remembering what the reporter had called his father.

“Papa is a big hero,” he answers his boy.

“Like Superman?” Luca whispers, his eyes huge as he waits for an answer.

“Bigger,” TK whispers back, feeling a rush of warmth and love as Luca gasps. “He’s Super Papa,” he finishes with a grin. The humor in his voice makes Luca giggle.

“I think we should go make those cookies now,” he says as he stands, lifting Luca to his hip when the little boy extends his arms to him. “Super Papa deserves yummy cookies, right?”

“Right,” Luca repeats excitedly with a bright smile on his face.

 When Carlos gets home, it’s close to nine pm, the cookies have cooled and are in Tupperware to keep them fresh. TK is sitting on the couch with Luca sleeping next to him.

“Hey, baby,” Carlos whispers, stopping short as he looks down at their son with a small frown. “Why isn’t he in bed?”

TK looks down at Luca too, running a hand over his back as the little boy sleeps on his stomach. “He wanted to wait for his hero to get home,” he says just as softly as Carlos comes over to sit down next to him.

Carlos’ eyes light up with understanding. “You saw the news.”

“Yep,” TK nods, tilting his head towards Luca. “We both did,” he continues with a grin. “You have a new name, by the way.”

Carlos raises an eyebrow at him, waiting as he looks at him amused.

“Super Papa,” he tells him, his smile growing as Carlos blushes.

“What?” Carlos questions, his eyes drifting to their son, his whole expression soft as it always is when he looks at Luca.

“He asked if you were a hero, and I told him you’re a big one,” TK tells him, and now he’s the one blessed with Carlos’ loving gaze. “He asked if you’re like Superman; I said bigger, and ‘Super Papa’ was born.”

“TK – “ Carlos starts, shaking his head. “We shouldn’t fill his head with – “

“With what?” TK interrupts. “The truth? You help people every day; you make the world a better place by simply being you. You protect everyone around you, but especially us. That sounds like a superhero to me. You’re his hero,” TK reaches out to touch Carlos’ face. “And mine.”

Carlos swallows audibly before leaning forward to kiss him. “I love you, TK,” he whispers as he presses his forehead against his. “You’re my hero too, and Luca’s.”

TK smiles at the words. “I know, baby,” he says softly. He pulls back to press a small kiss over Carlos’ brow. “You’re okay, right?”

“Not a scratch on me,” Carlos says with a nod, and TK lets out a breath. The tension he’s been carrying since the news report finally loosening.

“Good,” he answers. “Why don’t I put him to bed and we can have something to eat. Luca and I made you cookies.”

“Double chocolate chip?” Carlos questions hopefully, making TK laugh. Carlos’ sweet tooth is almost as bad as their kid’s.

“Yep,” TK grins as he remembers earlier. “Luca ‘helped’ by eating the chips; he crashed hard after the sugar rush.”

Carlos smiles fondly at the comment. “I’ll take him to bed,” he says already standing, he leans down to pick up Luca, holding him to his chest.

TK watches as Carlos breathes in their son’s scent before pressing a kiss to his curls, even in his sleep Luca clings to his father, wrapping his little arms around his neck.

“Be right back, cariño,” Carlos whispers.

“I’ll be here, my love,” he answers, his heart full as he watches the two loves of his life, silently thanking whatever entity blessed him with them.

I just went thru hell today ....for $185...from a job that fired me a week ago...

I can't make this shit up. I from a small town in the south and I recently had a falling out with my dad. Prompting me to move across the country with my bf. I've never lefty small town in my life but did on that day (real long story I'll post it some other time rn I feel tired) so long story short I needed a job. I cannot stress enough how shitty this place was....

First of all, these kids had no discipline, no structure, and no respect. (Not to sound like Rodney Dangerfield over here, but I gets no respect, lemme tell ya)

Every day, was like:

Me:Hey (kids name) why are you throwing paper?

Kid: idk

Me: well could u do me a favor (yes I would ask them to do me a favor as a means of trying to communicate with them with some oz of respect) could you not throw paper, please.

Kid: (looks me dead in my face and smirks while grabbing a piece of paper and throws it without breaking eye contact)

So Friday is field trip day for these...childrennn and while the first one went alright, the second Friday I'm there was a complete disaster. Also on that second Friday I'm there I had to work 2 extra hours

Enter Monday, I come in for 8 hours and leave. At this point I'm already looking for another job, so any excuse to leave would have been fine, I just wanted to have another job lined up...but luck was never on my side and sure enough that Monday night the director TEXTS me to tell me she's letting me go blah blah, mind u this wasn't a permanent job l, I was really there to fill in some gaps for the summer, but nevertheless it's a shock. But, cool, whatever, she tells me she can email me the check or I can pick it up, I say email is fine and that's it. Next Friday I get it emailed, I can print it, cash it, get on with my life. Simple right?

No....no no...absolutely tf not, nothing can ever be simple.

So, Friday comes and I call to make sure I am still gonna receive it, do they have correct emails address blah blah and the director then says,

"you can come pick up your check, d.w.a.c.n if you want".

Hmm...hubby just got paid, and I gotta run errands anyway, why tf not? It's right down the road I'll go get that check, get his, cash them and be on my merry way, right

Why tf did I say yes? Cos the minute I did, shenanigans of a malicious nature began. So I run up to this miniature hell...I mean...daycare and here's what happens

8 am: inquire about check, confirming I'll pick it up

Me: I can come through and pick it up

Director (D): ok, give me a few minutes to get there

9 a.m. I text to see if she's at the office, no answer...

10 a.m. I drive there to see if she's there; no show

10:30 a.m. me and hubby still waiting on this woman to arrive

It was then I decided to go get hubby's check, cash it and put it on his card, grab a quick breakfast and get back before she leaves and if she does dip, well, she can surely just cash it and leave it for me right?

Word of advise kids, never EVER leave fate up to chance, especially when you're born with hellaciously bad luck as I have been gifted. Don't. Do. It.

11 a.m sure enough she dipped. Can anyone guess what she didn't do?

For those who said she didn't print the check, you are correct, here's a cookie.

But, death, u may ask, how hard is it to print a check, surely not that hard right?

Rule number 2, and I cannot stress this enough. NEVER, EVER IN YO LIFE UNDERESTIMATE THE STUPIDITY OR INCOMPETENCE OF OTHERS. Don't do it, they'll surprise you every goddamn time cos I swear, trying to get these ppl to print this check convinced me that it would be easier to train a cat to grow opposable thumbs and open the tightest jars of pickles at will. Kid u not, can not make this shit up.

Fast forward and it's now 3 p.m.

No check, once again. So I call instead of going up there, mostly cos I don't want to get my ass kicked from cops bc I go up there and show the repressed nigga inside ready to pop out and fuck some shit up. I've never been to jail, but it would be my luck to get shot instead, especially now (and we not gonna make this shit political, ok? Any blue lives matter or all lives matter motherfucker who wanna come here and start shit will do well to remember that this ain't about u, this is just me venting, I ALSO have free speech and if you want to start some shit with me, I'm just gonna tell you to kiss the deepest, blackest part of my ass after I take a shit, and that's as far as I'm gonna engage with u ok? Ok)

So, long story (condensed) I finally get my check after my ghetto side leaks thru the phone. How much for my struggle?

Well if you were paying attention, you would know: $185.00

That's it. I went all day and had to eat d8 to not feel like crashing my car into this daycare center (kids were on a field trip, don't worry they weren't gonna be in harm's way, I hate kids but I am not THAT crazy) for a whopping 185.

Agh I read your recent post and realized: the entire Polycule absolutely commissions Magnus for gifts for birthdays/anniversaries/holidays. And he always insists they don’t pay bc it’s who he is but they all make it their personal

Lmao last ask sent too early. But the Polycule absolutely makes it their mission to pay Magnus by force if necessary. Simon literally hides money in the loft. Maia pays him back in free meals at Taki. Mel brings him Seelie weapons/charms/etc. Clary brings paintings as gifts, and maybe she ends up investing in a gallery and gifts a portion of the profits to Magnus. Izzy always pays for things on their shopping trips.

truly tho this is so great. i particularly love the mental image of maia’s birthday since she’s dating everyone in the Polycule (love how we capitalize it that’s so hot girl summer of us) plus there’s also her pack and just generally she has a lot of friends and everyone loves her, as she deserves. so like 4 months before maia’s birthday magnus just starts sending ppl shit like “if you wish to commission a gift to maia roberts please come forward now so i have the time to properly work on all the requests. requests are open for the following month starting this date, and no later” because MAN the workload. one would think he’s the only warlock in this stupid town or something. seriously

but anyway they all want to get maia a little magical something to make it special, so he has to actually like, figure out a lot of spells. raphael’s first request of a gift to her is to make something that tastes exactly like chocolate, but isn’t, since she can’t eat it anymore after the lycantrophy and raphael is a softie who wants her to have all the food and sweets she wants. and raphael is obviously like “i know i’m asking a lot, which is why i came to you, because if anyone can pull it off, it’s you, but you can say no if you’re too busy-” and magnus is like “hush, my boy, you know i’d never say no to you. besides, i’d be happy to give maia this” so there magnus is, studying the chemical composition of chocolate and the werewolf digestive system like crazy. in the end he lowkey cheats - he creates these magical tablets that are actually tasteless, but look and have the texture of chocolate, and when eaten have an enchantment that activates all the same parts of the brain that chocolate does, so it “tricks” maia into tasting chocolate. but hey, it works, so, that’s a win! maia is so happy she just jumps in raphael’s arms and almost topples them over but raphael has the biggest smile on his face and kind of spuns her around a bit. she also gives magnus a kiss on the cheek, and it’s the sweetest thing aaa im so soft

then of course magnus refuses to take any payment because he’s not going to charge his son for a gift even if it was a real fucking bunch of work. so basically raphael comes to him on clan business and he’s like “you have to charge me because if you don’t charge the clan on official business this can create a diplomatic problem and all the other clans are going to come for you or us” and magnus is like “okay that’s fair what do you want” and raphael asks him for like one (1) bag of blood and pays him A Thousand Dollars (it’s his own money, not the clan’s, but like, it’s officially a clan transaction). i’m exaggerating but you get the spirit. and magnus is just like “that is not the price-” but raphael bolts

and just other little things. meliorn is a practical nonbinary entity so they get her a little necklace that basically protects her clothes when she transforms, then magics them back on her body once she goes back to human form (i know that meliorn has seelie magic but it doesn’t work the same way as warlock magic so maybe they can’t do that themself for some reason idk. like their magic seems to be more a “playing with nature” stuff). easier than having a bunch of clothes hideouts. simon gets her a kind of mirror that play whatever memory she’s thinking about when she touches it, so she can watch it like a video u kno. izzy gets her, like, A Real Lightsaber. clary draws a little comic book enchanted so the figurines actually move. etc. every year they get sweeter and more convoluted and obviously they don’t all always come to magnus (simon for example makes her a bunch of songs, izzy is lowkey an engineer so she can make her a bunch of stuff herself, rapha also takes pleasure in the mundane things and knows that maia feels the same way so he likes to get her special, mundane gifts sometimes, meliorn obviously has their own magic, etc), but it’s always something special when they do

and then there’s always the fun little cat and mouse game of Forcing Magnus To Take Payment. they aren’t afraid to play dirty. izzy gives the money to alec under strict instructions to only spend it on magnus, but magnus can’t pay it back because it’s technically alec’s money. meliorn gets magnus some seelie magic gifts so precious and rare it would be essentially disrespectful to give them back (both in the form of like, powerful charms and trinkets, and also like, priceless spellbooks that very few have access to, etc). maia tells him that if he doesn’t take her payment, she won’t take his tips, which leads to a battle of him tipping her exactly the amount of money she’s paid and maia finding new, stupid stuff to “pay” him for (sidenote: my dad and one of his friends do essentially this every time they go out, as does most of my mom’s family. his friend once literally stole my dad’s wallet when he wasn’t looking so he couldn’t pay for their meal and the friend could treat him. no joke). simon and raphael hide money in the loft and when magnus goes to them they’re like “what? no, this isn’t mine. i agreed to take it for free as a gift from you” with the absolute most innocent face you’ve ever seen in your life. and so on

raphael’s birthday is also convoluted because like, 4 partners, a clan, a thousand people he helps with taki’s and the soup kitchen, and he’s magnus’ son, so of course everyone goes to him for help. simon has a major freakout every year because he doesn’t know what to get him (look. raphael is very refined and simon. is not. plus he’s been known to fuck up with raphael so he’s always Nervous even if all the clary bullshit was decades ago), so he comes to magnus, like, begging for help so he can figure it out. which is just straight up stupid because he usually actually has extremely sweet, beautiful ideas (like the time he recorded rapha a CD with a bunch of songs he made for him in spanish and raphael teared up so hard) but he gets insecure and agitated so magnus’ job there is mainly getting him to chill. then it works out. he ends up not even needing magnus to do anything because again, raphael enjoys the simple things and everyday gestures and just... regular, mundane stuff. he misses it. you know?

but that’s not stopping simon from paying for the counseling because he’s sweet like that, and magnus deserves it

and then of course there’s magnus’ birthday which always comes with a bang and he has so many gifts he’s basically drowning, what with all his friends and kids and warlocks and just. people who love him. he’s a bit surprised every time, which makes everyone exasperated because he’s such an important member of their community, like wtf. but it’s always sweet when his birthday arrives and there’s a fuckton of magical gifts manifesting at his doorstep until he’s almost drowning in them lmao. i just aaa i love this they’re all SOFT
