Alright I’ve made my fair share of Dad Batch Father’s Day posts but I’ve got a new one for you.

As you well know, Father’s Day is a very Big Deal™ for Papa Hunter; his gaggle of girls and Mama Cyare all band together to make him something consisting of space macaroni necklaces and itty-bitty handprint paintings that Papa Hunt cherishes forever. Lots of ooey gooey fluff.

Maybe even Ba’vodu Crosshair pitches in one year at the absolutely behest of his eldest niece because she wants it to be just perfect for Papa so she seeks her Ba’vodu Crosshair’s sharp eye. And maybe her and Cross present it to Hunter and Crosshair just smirks and says, “Happy Father’s Day, you chump.”

But Crosshair as a Papa.

For many, many years, Father’s Day is just another day for Cross. He stays in and keeps to himself. Even while he is married. He and Dee just have a quiet day. And they don’t talk about it.

But it’s Crosshair first Father’s Day (thanks to a certain Ramser’ika.<3) and Cross is. Overwhelmed. Suddenly he’s on the receiving end of this seemingly senseless praise and he doesn’t know what to do.

He’s told he doesn’t have to do anything. So he doesn’t. Cue Crosshair spending the entire day chilling with baby Asher up on his chest. :)

At some point in the day Dee steals baby Asher away so they make their sniper papa a little something. :) Crosshair gets a little teary eyed.

I don't celebrate Father's Day (or any other Hallmark holiday) for reasons that will not surprise you if you know anything about my life.

But I do celebrate all the other children of fuckers and pieces of shit who survived like I did, who broke the cycle of generational trauma like I and my sister did, whose mothers forced them to praise and worship their abuser "because it's father's day" like mine did, who fucking hate the endless reminders to celebrate the dad we never had (in my case, because he chose not to be a dad to me like he chose to be a dad for my brother. I guess being a bully was more satisfying to him).

I see you, friends. I see you, and I know you see me, and I am both grateful and sad. We know this secret handshake we wish we didn't know. We know a very specific kind of loss that only we know, a type of lingering pain that never really goes away entirely, that can only be reduced to part of the background noise, but can crank itself up to 11 without warning.

I just want you all to know that I see you, and I love you. I know how tough it is, how much it hurts.

I want to specifically make meaningful eye contact with all of my fellow survivors who are also dads, who show up for our kids in spite of the pain and loss. It's such a challenge, and it means so much. We broke the cycle and that is massive. I'm so proud of us.

Hunter and Gus heard about father’s day from Luz, and then immediately found out all of the information about what a “father’s day” should look like. Gus tried to go camping with Perry while Hunter took Darius fishing. It... did not go well. Eber overheard Hunter planning and Darius, having no clue what father’s day was, assumed that he was supposed to get Hunter a gift also. Anyways, it was a huge disaster and Hunter admitted he just wanted to thank Darius for adopting him and he didn’t actually want to go fishing, so they went home and sewed together. If you’re wondering where Amity was, she, the twins, and Alador went to the Bonesborough Brawl as a team and totally smashed it.
