April 3rd. It was the day after coming back to your designated timeline. Well, not exactly.
Either way, you and Five's dysfunctional family needed a break after trying to save the world from coming to an end twice in the span of a month. But mainly you and Five, after enduring years of torture from the spending time– forty five years–  in the apocalypse and the commision. So for the 58 year old teenagers, a break was very well deserved.
Everyone else was sleeping, so Five decided to take you to the bathroom to "chat".
He'd closed the door, locking it, and kissed you softly, and you obviously kissed back. The kiss was sweet and passionate, becoming slower and more heated as Five pressed you against the counter gently. His hands roamed your back and sides, eventually landing on your waist. You'd situated your hands on his shoulders, already moving a hand to fiddle with the hair on the nape of his neck.
Five slowly lowered his hands, positioning them on the back of your thighs as he brought your body closer to his, away from the counter.
"Jump." He mumbled against your lips, and you obliged. You wrapped either of your legs around his waist, Five gripping your thighs a little harsher to hold you tighter and sit you down on the empty space on the counter he had cleared prior to your visit from your own room.
Five pulled away from your lips the slightest bit, admiring you as he did. "Missed you." He flashed you a breathless smirk.
"We were separated by rooms for a couple of hours, Five." You responded, a hand making its way up to Five's hair, messing with already disheveled hair at the top.
"That's way too long." Five replied, pressing his lips against yours harsher than before, causing you to be taken aback a little bit, kissing back afterwards.
"Fuck, you're so perfect, you know that?" Five mumbled against your lips as he tilted his head to the side a little, deepening the kiss, his hands sliding under your shirt to rest on your bare waist.
You let out a muffled moan into Five's mouth, slowly pulling away to retrieve a hand from his neck and bring it to your mouth, covering it in embarrassment.
"Did you just–" Five asked, his eyebrows furrowing a little. "I might've" you replied, sounding muffled. Five just chuckled in response. "You're cute." Five removed your hand and replaced it with his lips, kissing your cheeks and forehead as well.
"Thanks," you mumbled with a shy smile, a roseate shade dusting your cheeks as you watched Five smile at you, a soft and endearing smile that could melt the hearts of anyone within a hundred feet from here.
Five was quick to bring his lips back to yours shortly after, but more gentle. This time, he let you lead him on, whether to carry on with your session, or to just go to sleep. You obviously wanted more, so kissed back harshly, a devilish grin now being plastered on Five's face, which you could feel against your lips.
Five got carried away, letting his tongue slip into your mouth, causing you to grip onto his hair tighter. He pulled away for a second, catching his breath as he did.
Five didn't hesitate to pull you back in for a kiss as soon as he could. You kissed back with the same amount of pressure he did, causing him to grip your waist tighter and pull himself closer to you. He placed a hand flat on your back under your shirt, rubbing small circles onto your back gently.
"My pretty baby." He murmured against your lips, your stomach tossing and turning as if it were a gymnast.
Five moved his free hand to rest on your thigh, gripping it slightly as he hovered over you a little.
Five pulled away slightly and admired you. He watched your every move as you pant in an attempt to catch your breath.
Five's lips find their way to your jaw, leaving a trail of kisses from there to behind your ear, which he knew was one of your weak spots. "Oh, God, Five." You let out a quiet moan as he smirked against your skin, trailing kisses down your neck, marking the territory as his.
"Y-you're gonna leave marks," you whimpered under him, your hand massaging his scalp as you did, causing him to groan slightly.
"Good. You'd look so pretty with my marks on your neck, sweetheart." Five mumbled into your skin, leaving a deep, crimson bruise on your neck that he soothed with his tongue. He admired his work with a grin, continuing to leave a trail of sloppy kisses down your neck.
You fumbled with the hem of his button-up pyjama shirt as he kissed his way back up your neck, eyes meeting with yours once he was done.
He placed a hand on your cheek, the other on your waist as he flashed a soft grin again. That damned grin. "I'm glad that since we're officially retired, we can do this now." He said as he leaned forward and planted a kiss on your forehead. "Yeah, me too." You replied, glancing at his lips when you did. Five smirked at that and began to kiss you once more.
Jeez, do you ever get tired?
You kissed Five hard, grabbing his collar to pull him closer. He grabbed your hips and pulled them closer to his own, shifting a little in front of you.
You fumbled with the first button on his shirt, undoing it, along with the second one. Five messed with the waistband of your pants, slightly moving it down. You grinned into Five's mouth, thinking you were about to have the time of your life, until–-
"HEY!" you and Five both got startled with the machine gun knocking at the door. "FIVE, GET OUT, I HAVE TO TAKE A SHIT!" someone yelled. It was Diego. "AND I AIN'T USING NATURE'S BATHROOM!"
"WE'RE BUSY, COME BACK LATER," Five responded as he continued to kiss you slowly, a low, delighted hum being released against your lips.
"We're– IS (Y/N) IN THERE?" Diego asked loudly once again, but this time, you heard groans coming from Klaus and Luther, so you chuckled to yourself as you pulled away from Five's lips. "Yeah, I am." You smiled as you turned your head to face the door, causing Five to pout at you.
"STOP SCREWING, AND GET OUT SO I CAN PISS!" Diego yelled, knocking at the door maniacally again.
"We AREN'T SCREWING!" Five replied. "We were about to," Five smirked at you, "But you interrupted us!"
"Ew, gross, just get out." Diego retorted in disgust, rattling the door knob.
"Why must you be so loud? It's two am!" you heard Luther let out a muffled groan.
"Let them fuck in the bathroom, use the outside one, it's not all that bad" Klaus replied. "Let them be horndogs!"
"No! They can be horndogs later, I have to shit!" Diego rattled the door knob harder then before.
"Okay, okay, fine, we're going." You aforementioned rapidly, looking Five in the eyes, then his lips, and back to his eyes.
Five's annoyed expression softened once he looked at you. "We can continue this later, my love," he spoke softly, pressing a gentle kiss to your lips.
Five helped you off of the counter, readjusting your clothes after and fixing your hair, along with Five's. You both stood in front of the mirror as you fixed yourselves, Five buttoning his shirt again as you straightened out your clothes, Five sending you a wink as you got composed, causing you to smile and blush.
You unlocked the door and opened it, eyes being met with an unhappy Wish™ version of batman, Diego fuckin' Hargreeves, who had interrupted your time with Five Hargreeves.
"Good morning, pendejo." You said, standing in the doorway as Five stood behind you, wrapping an arm around your waist.
"Yeah, yeah, get out– is that a hickey?" He asked as he pointed to the mark on your neck Five had made. You were quick to cover the mark, Five smirking as you did.
"Nope, go take your shit." you walked off as you pushed Diego into the bathroom. "It is a hickey." Five whispered with a devilish grin as Diego walked in, shaking his head as he shut the door and locked it.
You and Five walked away from the door frame and stood elsewhere in the room, Five wrapping his arms around your waist and placing his head on your shoulder. "Let's go to sleep, shall we?" He murmured softly against your skin, placing a gentle kiss on your hickey. "We can continue that later, sweetheart." Five whispered into your ear, kissing the shell of it gently, sending shivers down your spine.
"O-okay." You chuckled nervously. ❦︎

Hey uh do you think the Hargreeves siblings got each other birthday gifts when they were kids?
Do you think they snuck out in groups of maybe 2 or 3 to go shopping for the rest of them?
Do you think Luther has such an extensive record collection because he got new records from Diego and Ben every single year?
Do you think Allison got Klaus a nail polish set and he got her a new skirt?
Do you think Five never forgot about Viktor and made sure the others didn’t either, so he always got a gift along with the rest of them?
Do you think Luther didn’t quite understand the kind of subjects Ben read about but scoured Barnes and Noble for something he thought Ben might have liked?
Do you think Diego got a new knife from everyone pretty much every time and always complained but secretly used them more than any of his others?
Do you think Viktor played “Happy Birthday” on his violin to wake them up on October 1st?
Do you think they all got Five a gift for years after he disappeared? Do you think they thought that if they remembered him on their birthday it was easier to pretend he was out there somewhere celebrating with them?
Because I do.

Music To My Ears
Five x Talkative Wife
Note: Okay, so I've had this idea for a long time, basically a HC of what it would be like if Five (when he comes back to 2019) brings along his wife who is also his partner from the commission- who is super talkative, especially when she's nervous.
Five x FemReader

Tumblr media
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The first time he had seen Y/N, he simply wanted to kill her. Not only did she give away his hiding spot from the enemy but she would not STOP TALKING.
"Hi! I'm Y/N, I don't really have a last name, but it's an honour to meet you Mr.Five Sir. You're a lege-"
"Shhh!"
"It's alright they won't hear us!"
"Woman, please I don't need a partner, especially not one as annoying as Klaus!"
"Whose Klaus?"
"Tch no one-"
"HEY THEY'RE OVER THERE"
"SHIT"
And on that same mission Five got shot in the leg, which she kept apologising for over and over again, until he had to verbally say 'IT'S FINE PLEASE, JUST STOP TALKING I NEED TO THINK!'
Slowly, verrry slowly, she began to grow on him, killing wasn't his most favourite part of the job, and everytime she began talking nonsense he could tell she wasn't a fan of it either.
It didn't take him long to figure out that she would ramble on for hours a day when she was scared, nervous or just tired, especially on gruesome missions.
Yes, she would not stop talking even when she was drained. At one point he wondered if Delores thought he spoke a lot too. Until she ended up changing the topic of conversation around 5 times in 1 hour- no, this lady was a crackhead.
It was almost a year in their partnership and the Handler was pleased with their work. For Five was already a legend, he learnt that other than the useless chatter, the girl was a great assassin- quick, slick and brutal.
On one occasion, when Five was cornered and exhausted, he thought he was toast, almost ready to give up. He heard, "NOONE CORNERS MY PARTNER!" And gun shots.
They were all shot in the head
"Execution style?"
"Actually, I was super mad at you when you told me to stay at the motel because I'm very annoying and noisy. Like I get I can't be Delores but please I am my own person! I don't need to be someone else for you to accept me and hey! I am a great assassin by the way! Sure I talk a lot but before your rude a** came along I was running the show punk and-"
"Thank you Y/N, you saved my life today."
And that leaves her speechless, a whole year of knowing him, he had never thanked her, let alone ever spoken to her softly.
He smiles at her and hobbled to the car muttering a , 'You don't have to be Delores, you're better of as you.'
And that was the first mistake the boy made, because after that he began to notice more things about her that he liked.
The way she would ever so politely talk to people. How she was able to get intel by being nice- instead of using the interrogation methods he used.
More than often things would flow smoothly if she would do the talking.
3 years in and he wakes up one night, to get water and realises that she's not on the other bed. So he checks the washroom and she isn't their too.
Grabbing a bathrobe he goes out to the motel parking and finds her sitting on a bench, the cold night breeze tossing her hair around as she grips onto her cup- tea he presumes.
So, like any sane person he decides to give her some privacy, until he hears her sniff.
He goes and sits beside her and is just:
'Wanna talk?"
"No"
"NO?!?!?"
And she shakes her head, so he doesn't encourage her to speak, instead sits their quietly beside her, letting her cry silently.
An hour later he realises her head is on his shoulder and she mutters,
"When you go back, will you leave me?"
"I don't know..."
"Can I come with you?"
"You? But, I'm no fun nor a party goer, darlin' . I'll probably end up being an a** to you-"
"Would an a** have sat with me in the middle of a chilly night outside, letting me cry?"
And for once in his life Five had no answer. The resident genius had no clue to why her words had brought a sensation of tightness around his chest, why he felt her words cut through him. Was he actually going to leave her? If there was anyone (after Delores) who understood him, or rather had the balls to stand up to him, it was her. Yet, he had never realised how vulnerable she was on the inside.
That night ignites a fire within him, because 2 months later, on a mission in Hawaii, where the two are standing in a field of dead bodies he turns to her. All bloody and messy,
"Hey!"
"yes?"
"NOW GIVE ME A STRAIGHT ANSWER, YOU GOT IT?"
Utterly confused, she nods at the weirdo who looked like he was about to explode.
"MARRY ME?"
"Sure."
"I SAID A STRAIGHT ANSWER NOT A LONG EXPLANATION YOU - wait what?"
"I said, yes, Five Hargreeves, I'd like to spend whatever days I have left with an a** like you."
Cue the most abrupt and small wedding and exchanging of vows. Not that it mattered to either of them, because as soon as their 'secret wedding' was over, they were sent on another mission.
Naturally, she was rambling along the entire way,
"I really thought we could have cake though, but I guess we did have to keep it low key, oh speaking of low-key, I booked us a fancy couple's room I had been saving money for
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"
"What's with the face"
"You know~"
"Okay, I officially married Klaus."
"but, but, but you love me either way~"
"Seems to be so, now please stay quiet, we're entering their base and the last thing I want is to lose my wife on the second day of my marriage."
"WAIT WHAT"
"SHHH!"
Give or take many years later, the couple in their fifties is staring at the blue portal. Holding hands, both nervous, one quiet while the other...
"THIS BETTER WORK FIVE, I BETTER NOT END UP BEING TELEPORTED TO THE 1500's I AM TELLING YOU! WAIT! I DONT EVEN KNOW THE NAMES OF YOUR SIBLINGS, OTHER THAN VANYA AND KLAUS -"
"SILENCE WOMAN, ON THE COUNT OF THREE WE JUMP. 1 ...2-"
"3 I WIN"
And she pulls him into the portal as he yells at her.
The two end up on the ground with a loud thud.
Getting up he pulls her up and is just staring at her, up and down.
"Really Five, not a good time to be checking me out- wait why are you a child"
"shit."
"does anyone see a little number Five with ...a random girl?"
Without responding he drags her into the kitchen, the siblings following in right after. Watching him make her sit on a chair at the end of the table while he is preparing something.
Slowly they start interrogating him.
"It's been 22 years Number Five, where have you been?'
"It's been a lot longer than that."
"What happened to you?"
He places a sandwich infront of her and starts to devour his own.
"What do you think happened? I decided to test the limits of my time jumping, see how far I could go. Turns out, pretty far."
"Then how did you get back?"
By now, Y/N is visibly shaking in her chair, too nervous to even eat, staring up at Five who seems to be having a a not to pleasant conversation with his siblings.
Before responding to Allison he turns to look at her,his features softening, something ALL the siblings notice, "It's okay..." He whispers to her, "Eat."
"By projecting our consciousness backwards into a suspended quantum state version of us that exists in every possible instance of time."
"That makes no sense."
"It would if you were smarter."
"Granted, it did take me a little time to work out all the nuts and bolts of it."
Five notices that she's still not eating and he frowns only to glare at his siblings, "Stop staring at her you're freaking her out."
"US? YOU BROUGHT A RANDOM KID HERE FIVE"
"Random kid?" She slams down her sandwich. As Five smirks, 'well, at least she's better now'.
"I AM NO RANDOM KID, IM HIS WIFE. And by the way HE ISNT CRAZY- other than THIS MAN IN A NICE SKIRT I DONT SEE ANYONE WHO ONCE ASKED HIM HOW HE WAS? OR IF HE WAS OKAY? OR IF HE WAS ALONE!"
"Oh? danke- WAIT WIFE? Five DID U KIDNAP HER @?!"
"No, we're in our fifties."
"WHAT"
"Yes, now well that's established, Five we should really hurry up. Also, why don't any of you look similar? Didn't your dad die today? Wait, are you all here for a funeral - you guys have been fighting ever since you showed up huh? Not a lot of love I see, no wonder my husband's a little crackhead too. By the way, why are you so big? Oh- *turns to Vanya* you're the lady from the book, nice book by the way, family tea is the best, not that I'd know, I have no recollection of mine-" with that she got up and randomly walked out of the kitchen, a nervous wreck, something only Five could see.
"Five is she insane?"
"Ofcourse not you big ape."
They could still hear her go on about something from the other side of the house to which Diego frowned, "She talks a lot."
Five just grabbed his sandwich, walking out of the room, with a
"It's music to my ears."

Had a dream that S4 of umbrella academy was that Reginald trapped the siblings in a mansion, first episode was that they were stuck in a game of the game room. The game was like a space game with aliens. They had to defeat the game before being let out of the game. After defeating the game, wherein they found themselves waking up on the floor with said game behind them they went out to try and escape the mansion.
However, when they got outside they found themselves in a room full of stairs(like, imagine old timely castle like interior), Diego went to one part of the room that was a dead end, but the siblings saw him disappear as soon as he went there. Ben and Allison followed him to save him, then it shows that the three of them were transported into a secret room that looked like a jungle.
The three of them could see the door they walked through, it was like glass and all their siblings were looking at it trying to find a way to help them. The siblings only saw a wall, but the wall was like glass on their end.
When the trio tried to walk through the glass they couldn't. They were screaming for help but their siblings couldn't hear them. Then, weirdly enough, Raymond was with them? Allison tried to call for her husband, confident that he would hear her. He did somewhat hear her when he leaned in. Then, Allison started to slam her fists into the glass, like really really hard until it had some breaks where she tried to peel the glass shards through fingers alone, there's a lot of layers until Raymond could faintly see her through the wall.
Ben copied her and he pried open and shattered the glass with his hands alone. Five saw him and when Ben could somewhat get his body through the glass Five quickly pulled him. I remember specifically Five pulling Ben out, then Ben was too heavy for him that Five hilariously fell hard on the floor with Ben on top of him lol
Afterwards, they're at like a terrace where they could see the outside was a large and wide garden where they say they needed to go through to escape the mansion
Anyways, that was a wild ride for my dream umbrella academy S4 lmaooo

How you became the Hargreeves Siblings' first friend
Tumblr media
I hope you guys enjoy this. I'm not quite sure how I did but it was good :)
So your wondering how you and the Hargreeves became friends? Well that a good question and I shall answer.
First of all, I think it was Viktor who first became friends with you
Now how you met.
You walked by the academy everyday to and from school (Well not everyday but the days you would go to school on)
One day, Viktor decides to take a break from practicing and look outside the window
As he looks outside, he sees you walking home from with some of your friends (if you don't have friends for a moment pretend that you for a moment pls 💀)
For a moment, he wishes he could experience that, friendship
Besides that, he doesn't give you much thought so forgets about you
Until a a few days later he sees you again, walking home from school with your friends
Viktor begins to think about befriending you
After giving it some thought, he decides to befriend you.
Although it would take hime some time to actually befriend you. Maybe after at what time you past by to know when to approach you and enough courage to ask you.
I imagine him waiting outside the academy waiting for you to past by.
When you arrive, he stands up and shyly approaches you
He introduces himself and you do the same. He explains that he notice that how you walk by his home everyday and wanted to befriend you and you, of course, accept which makes him happy.
You gave him your number and said your goodbyes
For the next few weeks, you guys have gotten close.
You guys have had sleepovers, hangout etc.
During all of this, he keep it a secret.
Viktor didn't want his father or his siblings to ruin his first friendship with someone.
For the first time in years, he's not alone.
But eventually, they found out.
One of them notice how strange he started acting and decided to tell the other.
Then they started to notice how strange Viktor started acting.
One day, when you and Viktor decided to have a sleepover, Allison walked by Viktor's room.
As she approaches his room, she hears laughing and she slows down.
She leans towards to hear better.
The other voice is not anyone of her siblings which conclude Viktor has a stranger over
Then all of a sudden, it all makes sense. Why Viktor has been strange.
Allison then informs her siblings on what she found out.
So one night, they come to his room wanting to know who the mysterious person.
Viktor tries to act like doesn't know what they're talking about
In the end, they got him to confess.
He explains how he became friends with you and for the past few weeks he has been sneaking out and sneaking you in to hang with you.
He makes them promise not to tell Reginald
They do promise as long as they get be friends with you
Viktor agrees but he tells them he must tell you before they met you.
Once they get an okay sign, they immediately want to meet you.
All of them have never had a friend.
So all of you plan a sleepover.
When you arrive, they crowd and someone has to remind the other not to surround you.
After sometime, you guys got close.
I also have a feeling that they all would try keep you and your visits a secret from Reginald, Grace and Pogo but they already know because they're not good at hiding.
I think for once Reginald let's it slide as long as they don't get distracted and forget about their training and homework

TUA fanfic WIP: Sibling Beach Trip
I've recently devoured @assaily 's WIP posts and you know what, why hoard all of my WIPs when I may never finish them and people might enjoy them?
Having said that this isn't a snippet so much as it's a 2 thirds done fic that I've lost inspiration for the ending for so grab yourself a drink and enjoy!
Working Title: Beach No Beach. Love a working title
Length: 6k. Self control? Who is she?
Premise: Post apocalypse a family beach trip is proposed. Five has his reservations and is finding real life hard to adjust to, but he'll go if that's the Sibling Movement of the week. This is basically a slice of life fic that I'm pretty sure was going to build to Diego needing to save Five from drowning at the beach, because of course it was, but I think the rest of this has enough low-level angst and family moments to be entertaining on it's own.
Warnings: This fic discusses body dysmorphia in small detail and has underage drinking from Five.
It was embarrassing. More than embarrassing, really.
Shameful.
But Five couldn’t swim.
They’d had what constituted as ‘lessons’ when they were kids, apparently. Five had very limited memories of life before the Apocalypse, and often they seemed more surreal than anything.
‘We did?’ He asked blankly, barely looking over his morning cup of coffee to Viktor and Klaus.
‘All the time bro!’ Klaus replied breathily, laughing, eyes just a little wide in the thrill of memory, or possibly at Five not remembering something. ‘You don’t remember the pool? I’m pretty sure Dad blocked off the door after we started sneaking down there to play.’
‘I remember.’ Viktor nodded along, smile curling his lips so that his face lit up. ‘That’s how we found about Diego-‘
‘And his creepy fish power!’ Klaus looked ready to implode with hysteria and even Viktor bent to the table with a snort before looking between them.
‘You really don’t remember that?’
‘Diego isn’t a fish…’ He spoke slowly. He was talking to children after all. Or maybe he was hallucinating again. It happened. Hiding his grimace, Five took a sip.
‘Yeah! Yeah he can really hold his breath, come on you have to remember that, we teased him for weeks!’
‘Yeah that was kinda mean of us.’ Viktor grimaced a little into his own coffee. Probably for no reason, Viktor at that age wouldn’t have said Boo to a goose.
Hold his breath? It almost was a memory. Someone laughing, Diego pouting, then throwing a fit.
‘I think I’d remember us finding out about that.’
‘Maybe you blocked it out, it was pretty horrible at the time.’ The tone shifted after Viktor’s words.
‘Why doesn’t that surprise me.’
‘What doesn’t surprise you?’ Diego.
‘Speak of the devil!’ Klaus chorused, Five flinched a little at Diego’s hand falling briefly onto his shoulder as he passed. But it was barely noticeable now, he’d almost got a hang on it. ‘We were reminiscing about the time Dear old Dad decided to test out our underwater endurance.’
‘You mean when he held us all under the water until you all near passed out and I beat all your asses.’
‘Definitely would have remembered that one.’ Five murmured, covering up the chill skipping over his flesh.
‘Technically you didn’t beat my ass, since I wasn’t included in How to Drown Your Kids 101.’ Viktor replied with a darkly amused smirk and the sort of steel satisfaction that only true trauma inspired.
‘Well I’d have beaten you too.’ Diego retorted, confident as he went about fetching some ungodly looking juice concoction from the fridge.
How many different fruits went into just that, how many vegetables? The math wasn’t worth it, wasn’t worth the pang of mixed dread and desire it inspired in him.
‘And then we all called you, ah, well, never mind eh?’ Diego’s glare had silenced Klaus.
‘For the record, we’re sorry.’ Viktor offered, voice so gentle and meaning.
‘I’ve got nothing to be sorry for.’ Five retorted. He wasn’t there after all, and he was above childish name calling. He had found more creative insults.
‘Well you got off the hook easily anyway, you weren’t even there.’ Diego chimed in, but did take the time to nod to Viktor in a passing sense of camaraderie. He sat heavily at the table and looked at them all as he took a drink. ‘What brought this on anyway?’
‘We’re trying to convince little Fivey-‘
‘Older than you!’ His insistence was soundly ignored.
‘To come to the beach with us all at the weekend.’ Diego hastily swallowed the mouthful of his juice. What could all those ingredients even taste like together? Five shook his head at the sight.
‘Hell yeah you should come! You don’t get out enough.’
‘I get out plenty.’
‘To the library maybe.’ Klaus mumbled, twiddling with the buttons undone on his shirt.
‘Come on Five, it would be fun!’
‘Would it really?’ He sighed, wished he’d just blinked back up to his room with the coffee.
‘Its the beach bro.’ Diego’s voice was so deadpan that Five managed to feel insulted.
‘There isn’t even anything there! It’s all dead anyway!’ One of his hands gestured with the coffee cup for effect as he complained but the others were staring at him and, oh, right. Nervously he cleared his throat. ’I mean-‘
‘No, no what is it?’ Klaus was too gentle. They’d started doing this recently, paying attention to him rather than responding with their own drama and pushing what he said aside. Five didn’t know what to do with it. And it only took a few rapid equations to work out the cheapest way out of this situation.
‘Fine I’ll go. But don’t expect me to enjoy it.’ He blinked away. But not far.
Paranoid.
‘Alright alright.’ Five muttered quietly at Dolores’ imagined critique from where he sat in the pantry, listening.
‘Well, that was surprisingly easy, only took ten minutes.’ Klaus sounded both pleased and a little disappointed. Had he not wanted Five to come after all, or had he just wanted to do more wheedling?
‘What do you think he meant by it being dead?’ Viktor asked, voice contemplative and too damn observant.
‘I swear to God Klaus, if you making him go to the beach causes another apocalypse-‘
Diego and Klaus devolved into childish squabbles and Five blinked out of the pantry.
The beach huh. He hadn’t seen it in decades. He’d only been the once. If they’d ever done any missions by the sea as children Five certainly didn’t remember it.
It could be nice this time.
‘We can’t swim Dolores.’ In the emptiness of his room, the reminder drifted lifeless. He’d learned that one the hard way. ‘And only you can float.’
-
A weekend beach trip sounded like hell to Five but apparently he was one of the few. Yet it was interesting that the closer they got to the date the more cracks appeared in the others’ armour.
Diego would boast about his abilities, but when Luther had guffawed ‘oh my god! Fish-Boy!’ Their knife-wielding vigilante had begun to stammer on and off when they talked about the ocean. Allison had bitched at Luther down the phone for it, as had Klaus in person. Five had been listening in on parts of the phone call.
Because he liked to hear their voices, not because he was paranoid, Dolores!
But it wasn’t just Diego.
Allison had sounded hesitant, and wanted to bring Claire, but remained nervous about mixing Claire with their family. Five usually made himself scarce on the rare occasions that Allison brought Claire around. It had only been twice, but no matter how much he wanted to meet her, Five didn’t have anything to fall back on when interacting with people outside his siblings. Unless they were a threat, or it was for less than two minutes.
Three minutes fifteen had been his record, at the library where he went to practice. And after that he’d had to go hide in the bathroom stall and have a minor panic attack.
With people that mattered it was harder. Because there was only so long Five could talk to someone who mattered before he fucked it up. He’d only been able to say ‘Hi, nice to meet you’ to Claire before becoming overwhelmed by her childlike open-stare and making an excuse to run away. But he wasn’t the only reason for Allison’s hesitance.
Five thought she was worried about the crazy rubbing off.
During last month’s visit Klaus had told Claire the story of Dead Uncle Ben after she’d caught Klaus talking to what looked like thin air. Five had overheard on the phone call the week after how Claire had begun ‘talking to Dead Uncle Ben’ at school. For a custody battle situation, it was understandably a nightmare.
Diego always had knives on him, and children had sticky fingers. Claire kept trying to pull them out from Diego’s pockets and holsters and fingers. It wasn’t as if Diego encouraged or approved of it, but he had offered to teach her before he’d caught Allison’s look. And even at the beach Diego would probably be packing at least three knives. Probably more.
Luther had been fine at first, and was Claire’s favourite uncle. But then  the Holy Trinity of Stupid; hitherto named Klaus, Luther and Diego, had loudly reminisced about the all the times Luther had accidentally injured them during training when they were kids. Even Five had joined in; Luther  smacking him hard enough into the wall after a mis-timed jump and cracking his arm during combat training were ironically some of his clearer memories. Allison trusted Luther with Claire’s life, but she had looked a little green around the gills as they all laughed about it.
Viktor hadn’t done anything to directly inspire worry, but Allison had told Luther she was worried about Claire finding out what she’d done to her sibling when they were children. Five had stopped listening to the phone call once Allison started crying, feeling more than a little guilty about his eavesdropping.
So, Allison was apprehensive about Family Fun-Time at the Beach because it involved Family Fun-Time. Otherwise known as ill-facilitated chaos.
Klaus worried about taking Ben to the ocean and Ben being sad about only being able to be so-corporeal in the ocean. A guilt Five felt Klaus didn’t need to put on himself, given that without him there would be no beach for Ben. But he’d been told he had a rather unsympathetic view on things and asked to leave. It didn’t help that Ben was apparently desperate to go to the ocean and also sad about it, apparently.
Or so Five could tell from what he’d heard when he stood nearby Klaus’ room at night, or followed him at night down the street, or when he was hiding in the pantry eating fluffed-nutter sandwiches and just listening to his siblings being alive.
-
Friday lunchtime and Five thought that most of the pre-beach drama had probably run its course, that said nothing for what would blow up when they were actually there in typical Hargreeves-style. And he counted the journey to and from as a separate nightmarish entity altogether, but at least this time he was one of the cats to be herded, not the one doing the herding. Small mercies.
They were just lucky that Lila had decided not to come. Apparently their powers ‘gave her a headache’ whilst she was pregnant. Five had gone to visit her out of boredom and sibling duty, and swore to report back on the idiocy for her, and had somehow gotten roped into shopping.
‘Just zap us all there, I want to feel alive again.’
‘You could do it yourself.’ He pointed out, and she groaned and grabbed his hand. They did that a lot, held hands. Five had actually come to enjoy the brusque contact with his most violent sister. There remained a certain comfort in the knowledge he was holding the hand of another killer.
‘Don’t be a prick.’ She groaned. He waited, brow raised. ‘Look you’re more practiced than me alright! I don’t want to jump there and find out little Lila Junior is all over the floor somewhere else!’
‘Okay that’s disgusting.’ He’d blinked them just to stop the conversation, but not so quick that he hadn’t seen her wicked grin at his pain.
And, of course, after jumping that far, he didn’t have the juice to escape.
‘Do you even own anything that isn’t some god-awful dark academia bullshit?’
‘Rich coming from a punk.’
‘You’re going to the beach not a banquet-‘ They’d snapped and bitten at each other whilst grinning through their shark teeth and Lila had forced him to buy a pair of truly heinous swimming trunks about the length of the Academy shorts he’d used to wear. At least until Allison had dragged him out shopping again.
‘You wore that nice suit in the Sparrow timeline, you do not need to go back to looking like a prep-school kid.’
At least Allison had taste.
And secretly, Five had been glad that someone had made him do it. Old routines were the hardest to break for him when they seemed so ultimately unimportant.
‘Sunglasses!’ Lila belted out, breaking his musings and dragged him roughly over to a stand. She’d fussed over trying on shades and insisting on him doing the same and Five had allowed himself to pick out a pair he actually quite liked.
They suit you better than those goggles. Five huffed a smile at that. Dolores always had deplored his apocalyptic wardrobe.
‘I just, I want to be out there, but I’m not sure I’m ready to be out there.’ Five’s head popped up over the sunglasses stand.
‘Viktor? Luthor?’
‘Five!’
‘Lila?’
‘There’s the boys! No Klaus?’
‘He was, um, what are you doing here?’ Luther stumbled the words, other than Klaus and Five, the siblings were still somewhat awkward around Diego’s partner. Lila didn’t let it show, but Five thought the distance there bothered her. Five certainly wasn’t the one to know what to do about it. Klaus had told him he ‘imprinted’, like a duckling, and that had been enough ‘friendship’ talk to last another lifetime.
And he got embarrassed enough by Diego’s obvious happiness at him taking the time to include Lila.
Five held up the shorts he was being frog-marched into buying.
Not that there was a point, because he wouldn’t be stepping foot in the ocean ever again.
‘Apparently this is required dress code.’
‘Oh, same.’ Luther grinned a bit, before his face fell. Viktor, who’d been the one talking earlier, looked a little sullen.
‘No offence, but me and my spawn are going to walk away from all this.’ Lila gestured and excited stage left back towards the child section where, embarrassingly, Five had just come from to get the shorts in his hand. She had meant that their powers were bothering her, a weird pregnancy side-effect, but the pair of them looked a little slapped in the face.
‘What’s up with you two?’ Five asked, coming around the sunglasses stand to eye them up and down better. ‘Was it Diego? It’s usually Diego.’
‘What? No.’ Luther insisted. Viktor cleared his throat.
‘It’s just,’ Viktor paused for a breath and looked to Luther, who nodded encouragingly. ‘It’s hard to, cross some hurdles, with the dysmorphia.’
‘It’ll get easier, or I hope it will.’ Luther’s half-encouragement was half-hearted but well meaning, and Viktor offered him a small sad smile. Five just frowned at them.
‘Dysmorphia?’ He rolled the word around, squinting. ‘The medical condition?’ He frowned harder. In a sense, Luther’s ape-like physicality could be called that. But Sloane had gone a long way to helping with that. But she wasn’t fully welcomed into the loving disaster that was his family yet, so she wouldn’t be at the beach. Maybe that was the problem.
He’d said the wrong thing, Luther was flushed in embarrassment and Viktor put a hand on his arm before cutting in.
‘No, well-‘
‘Sort of, in my case. Both I guess.’ Luther spoke over Viktor, seeming to pull in his confidence with a truly remarkable strength. Strength of character that their father had always failed to measure. Much like Viktor’s patience.
‘Body dysmorphia. It’s when you might feel like the way your body looks isn’t how you think it should be. It’s how I felt, before. And somedays there’s another new hurdle to cross.’
‘It’s not comfortable, the idea of being on show like that.’ They managed their words with aplomb, but Five was somewhere between them and himself.
Maybe that was selfish, but he found himself looking at his own hands as they spoke, jaw a little slack.
Dysmorphia.
‘Oh.’ He didn’t have many more words for them, but the silence suggested he should, so he pulled away from himself and looked to them again. ‘What are you going to do about it?’
Taken aback a little by the blunt question, they looked at each other. Viktor found his voice first.
‘We were debating between making a ’t-shirts are ok’ pact or a-‘
‘’Skin or nothing’ oath.’ Luther finished. Five didn’t think he had the skill set to say the right thing.
You do. Dolores insisted softly. You’re kinder than you think.
‘Well, let me know what you decide.’ He offered, hoping he was somewhere on the track to wiping the misery off their faces. Three apocalypses and it’s still the human condition bringing us all down. ‘I’ll join you.’ Decidedly he nodded, and turned to make sure Lila wasn’t getting caught shoplifting. Honestly her skills needed some improvement. Although she would probably say the same about him.
Viktor and Luther’s seaside-problems Five could understand maybe a bit better on a personal level than those afflicting the rest of his family, because there was a certain degree of dysmorphia to all their bodily situations that didn’t bother dwelling on but couldn’t not be dwelt on at the beach. It wasn’t like he enjoyed looking at himself in the mirror, so on some level he got it.
He’d bring a t-shirt in case.
-
Despite their united worry, and Five’s pessimism, the Hargreeves family all descended on the mansion Friday evening for their trip to the beach the following day.
Five nearly blinked to the roof when Claire ran up and hugged him, standing with his fists clenched throughout and then vanishing behind the bar. As in hidden behind the bar. He had long ago sworn to Allison that he wouldn’t drink in front of Claire. They could at least both agree that she was a child.
Luther and surprisingly Viktor got drunk on the other side of the bar and Klaus merrily joined in.
Lila dropped Diego off to stay overnight since they had an early start come the morning, and Five contemplated blinking into their car to escape whilst Diego shouted at her to not do anything criminal while he was gone.
Allison escaped to smoke twice in between fretting about which sibling to entrust Claire to in the meantime, and quickly decided to just put Claire to bed instead.
Five listened to it all hidden behind the bar. Klaus knew he was there, he kept passing his glass down for Five to refill. Five left a shot out for Ben as well, because it felt polite, Even if apparently Ben disapproved of alcohol.
All too soon, they were turning in for the night in dribs and drabs.
Five hung on until the end. Surprisingly with Luther and Viktor.
‘Ahem.’ Luther cleared his throat and knocked a little sloppily on the bar top as they were turning to go. Five had been humming ‘Dream a little Dream of me’ for Dolores for the last few minutes and hiccupped himself to a stop. ‘For tomorrow, no shirts.’
‘No shirts!’ Viktor chorused loudly and very, very drunk, toppling a little from the sounds of it.
‘No shirts!’ Luther joined in and the pair stumbled up for the night.
‘No shirts.’ He toasted to the air, took his last swig and went to pick up Dolores-
But she wasn’t there. The shop had thrown her away.
In a flash the martini glass he’d been drinking from smashed against the bar where he’d thrown it.
You’re gonna have to clean that up now.
‘I know, I know.’
He ignored the catch in his voice as he moved to do just that, craving to hold her and getting glass shards instead.
‘Get up Five! Christ, there’s always one.’
‘And it’s usually him, or you. Actually it's usually you.’
‘Shut up and help me! Oh wait you can’t.’
‘Wow, low blow.’
‘Oh I can go lower-‘
‘Shut up.’ Five smacked his pillow at Klaus like a true teenager and glowered. His hair was ruffled and he smelt like a bar.
‘You look like some nasty little cat I found on the sidewalk and just want to put in a blanket,’ Klaus half-crooned, half sneered, grabbing his grumbling gremlin of a brother. ‘Now come on, get up and showered or Allison will have our asses.’
‘Have our asses!’ All three of them turned with slightly horrified gazes to see Claire standing in the door giggling, fingers pressed over her mouth and looking like she knew exactly what she was doing. The little tyrant. With a final giggle she turned and ran. ‘Mooooooom!’
‘No no no no no!’ Klaus abandoned Five to his fate and sprinted off after his favourite little terror of a niece. If she made it to Allison, they were all doomed.
She made it Allison.
Five managed to get himself somewhat presentable, down the stairs and into clothes. In fact they all did, more or les on time, it was a Hargreeves miracle.
‘Loving the shorts buddy. You needed more colour in your wardrobe.’
‘Keep talking and I’ll sk-‘ Five stopped himself, Ben snorted uncharitably behind Klaus’ shoulder as Claire looked eerily around at them, eyes wide and guileless. Klaus cleared his throat whilst Five’s brain seemed to re-wire itself, clutching his coffee for dear life and eyes shielded by shades. ‘Skkkunk you.’
‘Skunk you.’ Claire mouthed, hand benignly in Allison’s, eyes bright with hell-fire.
‘Skunk me?’ Klaus turned to Five again, disbelief and laughter battling for dominance in his chest. ‘That’s the best you could do?’
‘Keep talking, and you’ll find out.’ Five’s coffee got grumbled into and Ben guffawed behind them.
‘You’re both idiots.’
‘Shut up Ben!’
‘Dead Uncle Ben’s here?!’ Klaus shrivelled under the weight of Allison’s incredulous raised brows turning to him with the sweet promise of death as Ben ‘awwed’ behind him.
-
Allison had already had to put up with Claire having a tantrum about not being able to talk to Uncle Ben, and had thrown her hands in the air when  Klaus had said Ben also wanted to talk to Claire.
‘Sure, why not! Let’s just wheel her right into therapy rather than window-shopping it!’ She had stormed to the back of the bus and sat next to Five, because he was currently the quietest and she saw the least of him.
Ben’s blue conjured form absolutely enchanted Claire, and her eyes swelled so large and happy and un-affected by rumour as she looked gleefully between Dead Uncle Ben and her Mom that it made Allison’s heart lighter.
Watching Ben form into what existence Klaus could give him was always a delight, if a bittersweet one, and Allison found herself relaxing a bit at watching the joint joy on her child and brother’s faces.
They had taken the bus to the beach, changed three times and by the time the ocean breeze was coming salty and refreshing through the window Allison’s hungover siblings had drunk enough coffee, water and juice to grace the land of the living. Viktor and Luther had woken from their nap enough to tease Diego about his upcoming life of parenthood. She’d berate them, or join them, but honestly they were just the warm up act for the terror Allison herself could inspire if she told Diego the truth of parenting. But she didn’t quite want to do that.
Something in her knew the horrors too well to joke about them right now, the emotions always too present. And some dark voice inside her said that she didn’t get to lord it over anyone. Not with the mess she’d made the first time round.
And probably was making, letting her kid talk to her ghost Uncle.
‘It’ll be fine.’ Allison jolted a bit, and glanced down at Five, slumped still somewhat bonelessly, dressed in a plain top and tropical beach shorts that were almost the same shade of yellow as Allison’s own bikini under her wrap dress. Five was alert enough to be verbal, which was good, but not quite enough to move further down the bus and put up with their family’s particular brand of unending bullshit.
‘What will?’ She asked, bewildered. ‘This family trip? I’m pretty sure its’ already gone way better than it should, which means we’re due for a tsunami at least.’ He snickered at that and she smiled at the rarely heard sound.
‘Well I won’t disagree, but I meant Claire with Ben. If anyone can talk sense to her, it’s the one who usually holds the brain cell.’
And Five was somewhat right. Despite the way he very awkwardly coughed and looked through his fringe out the window when Claire came to sit between them.
‘Mom, I’m sorry about pretending to see Dead Uncle, I mean, Uncle Ben at school. I know it’s a Serious Topic now.’ She nodded solemnly, and Allison felt her face crease up in adoration at the attemptive-adult look on her daughter’s angelic face. And the apology that she wasn’t sure she deserved, but couldn’t help melting over. ‘But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop talking about him because Uncle Ben and Death are important.’ And just like that, adoration turned to the sort of disbelief that only children could inspire. Five snorted.
‘Smart kid.’ He muttered, and Allison found her smile reforming.
‘Thank you Claire, and you’re right, those are important topics. We’ll have a talk about bluntness at, a much, much later date.’ Because there were only so many Serious Parenting Moments she could handle before 10 in the morning. She thought she had an easy out, but then Five was turning to Claire with a devilish look at Allison over his glasses and a truly awful smile. Her stomach dropped.
‘Whatever she says don’t listen to her, your Mom mastered bluntness at age Six.’
‘Six?!’
‘Six.’ Five nodded.
‘I think you should go talk to Uncle Ben while he’s here sweetie, Uncle Klaus can only keep him visible so long-‘
‘But I wanna talk to Uncle Five too!’
‘No you don’t-‘ Allison and Five flashed each other an awkward look at their matching words.
‘Hey Claire! Claire! Wanna see the octopus in Uncle Ben’s belly-‘
‘NO SHOWING HER THE HORROR!’ Allison shouted as Claire squealed and ran for a glaring Ben and shit-eating Klaus.
She didn’t have one child, she had a whole bus of them.
-
The beach spray in the air wasn’t like he’d thought it would be.
Five watched the unreal blue hue of the ocean, heard the waves crash rather than slosh thickly, felt sand rather than trash and rubble under his feet.
It was beautiful.
‘So, we doing this?’
‘We’re doing this.’ He glanced to Luther and Viktor. They’d set up their family’s base-camp on the beach, and Allison was over at the nearby changing huts getting Claire sorted. Diego had set them up under one of the available umbrellas and was lecturing Klaus on sunscreen. Because of course he was.
Red rays from the too-hot sunlight burnt through the distorted atmosphere, piercing dust-and-storm clouds, lighting the grey sloshing water in an eerie light.
‘Don’t you want to swim? I always wanted to swim.’
‘Hey Five!’ Sand hit him in the face. Five spluttered and spun around. No crap littering the golden sands. Just his family and the blue tide. Disguising his shaky breath, Five glared at Diego. ‘You too, sun cream, come on line up.’
‘Sun cream Nazi.’
‘Want me to spray it in your face Klaus?’ Klaus just groaned, turning around obediently as Diego sprayed an endless can of aerosol ‘factor 30’ onto his pale skin.
‘Might as well get it over with Five. He’ll have his way.’ Klaus pouted.
‘That I will, alright, you’re done, come back in three hours.’
‘Alright Mom.’ Klaus mocked with a grin and escaped away, donning his brimmed hat and heading to the ocean.
‘You’re up.’ Diego beckoned him over and Five shook his head snorting.
‘The sun’s not even radioactive at this point.’ Diego stared and then grabbed him.
‘You’re the most in danger, young skin is important to protect.’
‘Get off me!’ Five snatched the can and roughly sprayed over himself before throwing it back. ‘Happy?’
‘That’s not how you apply sunscreen bro.’
‘Its literally what you just did.’
‘No sunscreen, no sun.’ Diego stated with an impressive amount of finality and pointed at the towels under the parasol where Viktor and Luther were lurking. Beyond them, Allison was running after Claire to the water.
‘Fine by me.’ He wasn’t swimming anyway, and he’d had enough of the sun’s harsh rays. Diego seemed appeased, and headed to the ocean himself.
Five settled down and, seeing his remaining brothers had already removed their shirts, did the same. Solidarity and all.
Job done, he settled back, and watched the ocean.
It was even more mesmeric now than it had been back then, thick with ash and ruined life, but the largest amount of water he’d seen in months.
He hadn’t washed in months.
Is it even real? Dolores laughed at him
‘Of course it’s real.’ Walking there had been a dream, heart thudding, shedding clothes along the way haphazardly, stumbling over ruble and Dolores in his arms, in a dream till the water sloshed over his ankles.
The sensation had sent shivers up his spine.
‘Hey, you swimming?’ Viktor nudged him back into focus and Five looked around him, glad of the sunglasses hiding his eyes.
‘No.’
‘Really? But we’re at the beach, and it’s pretty empty, even Luther’s in.’ It took Five a moment to notice that yes, he was. Tossing Claire up in the air and into the water as she squealed in delight. Diego looked like he was doing some pretty serious swimming while Klaus and Allison lounged in the shallows.
‘You go, have fun. I’ll guard the camp. Wouldn’t want us loosing our clothes.’ He got a frown at that, but Five had lost his Academy uniform that day on the beach and with it the only reminder of home he had left, the only identity he had. Not to mention the only clothes he’d had.
Just because he’d wanted to feel water and hadn’t weighed them down.
‘Well, come over when you’re ready. You’ll like it.’ He grinned in lieu of answering and Viktor shrugged and went off, both him and Luther bare-skinned from the waist up and wearing it with growing confidence.
Smiling a little, Five folded his arms behind his head and stretched his toes into the sand. It burned a bit, but the feeling was unlike anything he’d felt before. He kept doing it over and over, finally sitting up and admitting that he wanted to touch it.
Five settled off the towel and felt the sand all over, shivering, digging his fingers into it.
Dry and hot on top, cool and heavier underneath if he dug down far enough.
Golden, soft.
His fingers found a shell and Five took a while staring at the delicate pattern, mesmerised. He looked for more.
‘What are you doing?’ Five had to get a better handle on being snuck up on. He looked around to see Claire staring at him, rocking on her feet.
‘Finding shells.’ He replied.
‘I’ll help!’ She lay down next to the hole he’d dug and reached her arms in to tease through the sand. ‘They’re pretty.’
‘Uh, sure.’ Seeing how deep Claire had to reach into the hole, Five looked around and winced. Half of their belongings were covered in sand and to match the hole was a large mountain he’d moved aside, digging straight down mindlessly.
‘Is this one good?’ Claire pulled out a long, thin shell, poking Five’s knee with it.
‘Its great.’ He took it and tried not to feel her eyes on him as he looked it over. ‘It’s a razor clam shell.’ He offered, turning it over in his fingers and admiring the barred pattern. He put it in the ‘clam’ pile.
‘Really? What’s this one.’
‘A snail.’
‘And this one?’ Five glanced over from where he’d reached for another speck of porcelain white buried in the sand.
‘A crab claw.’
‘Where’s the rest of the crab?’
‘Given that that’s it’s arm, I’m assuming that it’s dead.’
‘Like Uncle Ben.’
‘Like Uncle Ben. Although, I don’t know if crabs have ghosts that stick around, that’s really an ethical and philosophical debate on the presence of a soul and frankly it’s exhausting.’
‘Oh.’
‘Claire! There you are, don’t run off like that!’ Allison looked vaguely harassed as she hurried to them. ‘Oh, Five, thanks for looking after her.’
‘Don’t mention it.’ He replied, somewhat guilty where he had moved to sit in the hole he’d dug, and hadn’t even noticed Claire being ‘missing’ in the first place. He’d been too focused by the texture of sand and delicate shells.
‘What are you two doing?’ The frown and amused quirk to her mouth suggested that this wasn’t normal.
‘Uncle Five’s collecting shells.’ Incredulous eyes turned his way, Five scowled.
‘I can stop.’ He snapped out.
‘No, no Five, it’s okay. People collect shells at the beach.’ Her assurance was swift but gentle, genuine. Claire was looking at him wide-eyed.
‘Oh. Okay.’ He replied, somewhat derailed from defending himself.
Prickly. Five ignored Dolores’ fond chuckle.
‘Impressive hole Five.’ Luther came up behind Allison and Five hopped out enough to sit on the rim of his sand pit. Claire squealed on seeing him and reached up to be lifted, she kept hold of the crab claw.
‘What is that?’
‘It’s Uncle Five’s dead crab!’
‘Don’t touch things like that!’ Allison wrestled it from Claire  who pouted.
‘Uncle Five touched it!’
‘Well, he’s a heathen, not a lady.’ Five snorted, but didn’t deny it. ‘Let’s go wash your hands.’ Claire was led away with a plea of ‘but mooooooom’ and Luther took her place.
‘You’re not swimming?’
‘Apparently I’m collecting shells.’ Five gestured over to the neatly sorted collection he’d accumulated.
Dolores liked them.
‘I just thought you were digging a hole. Maybe we should make a sand castle.’
‘A what?’ Luther was already gathering the sand Five had piled up and grinned.
‘I’ll show you! I used to try and make miniature ones on the moon with the moon dust I collected, but we could make a really big one!’ The childlike enthusiasm was enough to stir Five’s eternal curiosity, he followed Luther out of his hole and felt the sun lap his skin as they began forming a ‘foundation’.
It was surprisingly enjoyable. Therapeutically technical.
It looks good.
It did, Five thought.
Give it a tower for me, like a princess would have.
‘It needs a tower.’
‘Good idea. And a flag.’
They built for a while before Diego came to join them and added himself in with a comment of ‘sick’. They stuck one of Diego’s knives in the top in place of a flag and Viktor and Klaus came by with a heaping assortment of lunch foods.
‘Feeding time at the zoo!’
Allison and Claire followed having been in the sea again, and Five got up and stretched from where he’d been hunched over. The water glittered in the sun.
Five thought he might like the beach.
‘Five, your back!’
‘What about it?’ Five looked at Diego askance but got pushed under the shade.
‘It’s coming up red already, I told you to stay in the shade.’
‘Such a parent in the making.’ Klaus teased. ‘What? I think it’s sweet, really!’ Ben, apparently, was getting involved.
‘I’m fine.’ Five protested, but was wrangled onto one of their sandy towels and he watched bemused as Diego wetted a t-shirt and draped it over Five’s shoulders. The coolness did feel good, he hadn’t realised how hot his skin had gotten. Sometimes it was hard to feel things.
‘After lunch, you’re putting sunscreen on.’ Diego warned with a raised finger and firm stare. ‘Now drink your water.’
‘You’re not the boss of me.’ But he wasn’t about to waste water, so he drunk what he was given and ate the hotdog passed his way and listened to their chatter. With the distraction of the sand gone, his thoughts ticked lazily back to the last ocean trip he’d had.
He’d been so hungry that time that he’d contemplated eating one of the rotting fish carcasses before deciding better.

WORD COUNT 1.1K
WRITTEN  12.10.2023
tonight was your night. strobing lights flashing all around you, sticky spots on your arms where people accidentally spilled their liquor, bodies flush against your own as everyone flowed with the music. you could forget all about any and every difficulty in your life. one night of drinking and partying, which you would most likely regret in the morning. but for now, you didn't care. you were having fun.
"hey, what's that?" your friend shouted over the booming music. you couldn't hear her.
"what?" you shouted back in confusion. she reached over to you, pulling out a blinkering device from the small, glittery purse barely hanging off of your arm. It was your phone - someone was calling. She looked at the caller ID and her expression darkened. "Who is it?"
You walked around her, only to see him. That stupid fucking smile of his, so goddamn beautiful. You felt your heart sink into your stomach and it settled with a tragic gurgle at the bottom of your gut. Your friend immediately hung up on him and gave you your phone back. "Just leave it alone, okay? Remember why you came here in the first place . . ."
Her expression was encouraging - she wanted you to say it. With a relictant role of your eyes, you responded, "to get drunk and forget about him," with as much disdain as you could.
"Exactly," she responded with a simpering smile, clapping her hands together. She grabbed you by the shoulders, turned you around, and started to push you towards the mass of bodies. "So go out there, dance your ass off, and make every man in this room jealous that he can't have you. Go!"
"All right, all right!" You exclaimed in response, shrugging her hands off your shoulder and entering the crowd through a very narrow passageway between two couples dancing it out. As the scent of alcohol, sweat, and sex assaulted your senses, you started to wonder whether this was a good idea at all. You slowly looked towards your purse. No. You promised yourself you wouldn't crawl back to him. But it was just too easy to pull out your phone and stare at new messages you recieved.
DIEGO (10:34PM) look, i know things ended badly
DIEGO (10:34PM) but i can be better
DIEGO (10:35PM) Location shared. come on please, just talk to me
It wouldn't be a big deal if you went over, right? I mean, you were just friends. That's what you decided on when you ended your relationship, even if you had ignored him since said desicion. It was just one night. One singular night, and you were just stopping by. It totally wasn't a bad idea at all. Right?
You didn't bother saying goodbye to your friend. She was probably already luring they guy she was dancing with to the bathroom - you wouldn't see her for a while. And she wouldn't see you either.
His address wasn't far off from where you were - you could walk there, even. You ignored the catcalls and whistles thrown your way, rushing through the streets to the one person who could ever get you to do something like this. He was your biggest strength and your worst weakness, all at once.
You climbed the stairs to an apartament complex to the second floor, flying past the different room numbers until you found his. With heavy breath, you raised your hand to the wood but hesitated. How was this night going to end? Well . . . how do you want this night to end? You weren't going to pretend as though you didn't miss him whole-heartedly. But it was hard to pretend as though he wasn't the one who ended things.
You were delusional. You thought, maybe one more night together would be good for us.
You knocked, three times. It wasn't long before he swung open the door and leaned against it, again, with fhat smug smirk. Diego. His eyes followed the length do your body - you almost forgot you had dressed up to go out with your friend.
"All for me?" He asked, returning his gaze to your eyes. It was alluring - not begging, but demanding that you come inside. It was hard to tear your eyes away from him. He was still in his vigilante gear and he knew how that made you feel.
A plesant blush spread over your cheeks. "I was out clubbing," you responded shyly, shifting your weight between your feet. He said nothing, only moving out fo your way and pulling the door wider. Asking to please, come in. You hurried inside - after all, you were shivering from the freezing cold in a much-too-short mini-dress and skinny heels. "I'll admit, I wasn't expecting you to reach out."
"No?" He had his back turned to you, by the small counter that must be the kitchen. He faced you again, with two glass tumblers and offered you a drink. You accepted - after all, he was being hospitable and you didn't want to be rude. Finding a place to get comfortable, you leaned against what you could call a kitchen table, but being truthful, you were practically seated upon it. "I wasn't expecting you to come."
You shrugged, taking a long dreg from your tumbler, staring at the bottom of it when it left your lips. The tension in the room was thicker than blood. You looked up when the sound of Diego's drink meeting the table met your ears. He approached you, almost cautiously, like you were a deer in headlights. Taking the drink from your hand, he placed it on the table far from you and rested his hands on the surface of the table behind you. You were trapped. But it didn't much feel that way. In fact, you felt almost free, like ever since the break-up a piece of you had been locked up and now that you were with Diego . . . you were free to be who you are and do whatever you wanted.
"Which means we both know why we're here, right now," he said softly. An hour ago, you had told your friend that you and Diego were purely platonic. I only see him as a friend. You scoffed at yourself now. If that wasn't the biggest lie you've ever told yourself.
One of his hands reached out, trailing shapes onto the skin of your hand. This was a horrible idea.
"If you don't want to do this, I suggest you leave now."
It was a terrible idea.
But God, you wanted him.
"Why do you think I'm here you big dummy?" You smashed your lips against his, wrapping your legs around his torso while your hands trailed their way up his neck.
He grinned against your lips, his hand trailing down to clutch your ass. "Now that's what I'm talking about."

Been a while since I’ve posted anything fic related, but I’m not sure if I’ve ever talked about this fic before.
The basic premise is the Handler/Commission put some kind of kill switch in Five that would slowly destroy his body planned obsolescence style in the event that he ever successfully defected. It’s essentially a sickfic and another one of those no sparrow, no season 3 au’s bc i wrote this a year and a half ago and the season wasn’t even out yet. I found it again this morning bc I finally had some thoughts for it after all this time.
Anyway, here is some gratuitous angst and Diego cuddling Five. CW for mild suicidal ideation.
---
Five looked miserable. Pale and shivering, he looked so frail and small, so old and young at the same time. Diego wasn’t a fan, he didn’t want to be in the room any longer than he had to. The space heater next to the bed was blasting like a Mojave wind, and still Five shivered quietly on his bed.
Five didn’t complain, not even to inform them he was cold. He hadn’t complained this whole time, and maybe that’s what was getting to Diego. Five was miserable, it was obvious he was hurting, it was obvious he was struggling just to stay conscious enough to mechanically munch on his peanut butter crackers. But he didn’t say a thing.
A cracker was left half-eaten between two fingers, his head drooped and his eyes slipped shut. He slumped into himself, still shivering. Diego frowned, slapping his knees as he stood from the armchair. “Alright.”
His voice startled Five, likely having forgotten he was there again. He flinched, head popping up, bloodshot eyes confused and darting before landing on Diego’s face. The relief was palpable, his shoulders slumping, something relaxing in the pinch of his expression.
“Diego,” he croaked.
“Yeah, just me bud.”
“Are you leaving?” He tried to make it sound like an innocent question, tried his damndest to keep his inflection flat, Diego could tell. But he could also hear the quiet fear burbling beneath it.
“No,” he lied, and almost sat back down again.
Five nodded and seemed to remember his cracker. He nibbled on the corner of it again, his arm shaking with that little effort. “It’s not stale,” he remarked, hardly above a whisper. It was the third time he’d said that about the cracker and every time it struck at something soft in Diego’s chest.
“Fresh crackers, just for you.”
“Fresh…” he rolled the word around in his mouth like he was tasting it. “Where’d you find them?”
“The store on fifth.”
Five nodded slowly, processing. The last two times that was the end of the conversation. Diego hoped it would be the end of this one too, but then Five looked over at him, a stark confusion breaking through the dead-eyed exhaustion. “Isn’t the roof…?” he made a fluttery motion with his hand, dropping crumbs into his lap.
“Roof is fine, Five.”
He shook his head, brow pinching. “No, I remember it collapsed.” He paused, Diego at a loss for how to answer. “There’s a pharmacy on tenth, it still has stuff. There might be medicine there.”
“We have medicine for you,” Diego said, gesturing at the table with the small battery of bottles atop it.
Five looked over at it, expression falling blank as he failed to process something. He stared for too long, unblinking and unmoving, that Diego figured he’d lost him again. Lights on, but no one was home.
“I hurt,” Five sighed at long last, breaking the silence and his stillness with another shiver.
Diego chuffed a surprised laugh. “I bet you do.”
“I’m done,” he said softly. “I don’t want to be here anymore.”
Diego swallowed down the lump that jumped into his throat. Five didn’t complain, not about the pain, the confusion, the exhaustion.
Five shivered again, cracker forgotten.
Diego couldn’t stand it anymore. “Okay, okay.” He needed to do something, anything to help. He couldn’t just stand there watching Five in misery, watching over him as he got worse and worse, as even the pills and syrups and whatever pain meds Mom tried to give him failed to do a goddamn thing.
“Are you still cold?”
Five looked up at the question, considering him for a solid ten seconds before nodding clumsily. “It’s winter,” he said as if that explained everything.
Diego didn’t have the heart to tell him it was the dead of August. “I’m cold too,” he said, reaching down to turn the heater off. Diego was sure Five didn’t even know what the damn thing was but his shivering took on a new ferocity the moment the coils darkened. He looked confused, lost and as Diego approached the bedside, suddenly defensive. His arms curled over his chest, jaw clenching, pulling himself back as if he could get away from Diego.
“You’re not--” he started, aborted with his mouth open, eyes darting around the room. “Wait, I don’t--”
Diego crouched at the bedside, realizing he was looming a little. “You’re okay, it’s just me.” He reached out, careful to keep his palm up and gesture slow. Five watched his hand, pulling back from him as he tried to touch his arm. “It’s just me,” he repeated.
Five didn’t complain, and he never talked about why he was so damn untrusting of them in his confused state. Diego didn’t want to think about who could have planted that mistrust and why. He knew why. He’d spent enough time with Lila. He’d met her mother. The first person Five interacted with in decades. Diego would have trust issues too.
“Diego,” Five said flatly, more an affirmation than anything else.
“Yeah.”
“What are you doing here?”
He almost wanted to know where ‘here’ was for Five. Somewhere cold, somewhere beyond the end of the world, somewhere lost in his own past. “I’m here to save you.” It sounded stupid coming out of his mouth, feeling it burn in his eyes.
Five paused for half a second, something in his eyes growing sharper than it had in days. Then he laughed, a single mournful guffaw that threw his head back and nearly toppled him back into his pillows. “Save me?” he asked, incredulous. “How? You’re dead, remember?” He smiled wide, shoulders shaking with more than just cold. “You’re dead.” His mirth turned to grief in a second, his expression twisting into honest fury if he’d had the strength. “You can’t save me,” he spat. “I have to save you.”
Diego reached across the bed and put his hand over Five’s arm. His skin was cold as ice, his wrist sharp and bony under Diego’s palm. “You already saved us.”
Five’s anger was smothered by the touch on his arm, his entire attention drawn to it. He opened his mouth, but only a half-aborted burst of air made it out.
Diego didn’t waste time. With the heater off, Five had nothing keeping him warm and Diego didn’t dare let him go now. “I’m cold, too.” Diego said again, catching Five’s attention back to his face and voice.
“I’m cold,” Five said, and Diego couldn’t tell if he was saying a truth or just repeating the last thing he heard.
“Let me in there, then.”
“Huh?”
Diego didn’t wait for him to figure it out. He half-stood, slipping his shoes off and dragging back the covers in one move. He pulled himself under the blankets, one arm around Five’s shoulders, the other making sure his brother was still covered.
“What are you--” Five realized half-way through the sentence that Diego was warm. The question forgotten, Five pressed himself into Diego’s side, shivering fiercely. “Oh,” he sighed, hands finding warm places to shove themselves into.
“Yeah, thought you might like this better.” Even though the old man would never admit it in his entire life. Neither would Diego. No one was home to see this blatant display of affection, so Diego could deal. He was pretty sure Five wasn’t going to remember a thing about this later.
He flicked the half-cracker to the floor, got himself comfortable, Five slumping more and more of his weight against him. His shivering was easy to feel, his whole body so cold. This wasn’t normal, and it settled uncomfortably in Diego’s gut. He wrapped his tiny older brother in his arms, tucking him against his chest to lay on the pillows together.
It took a while for the shivering to subside, took even longer for Five’s breathing to ease and his body to relax. “Diego,” he whispered, so quietly Diego nearly missed it.
He hummed, letting it rumble in his chest so Five could hear it where his ear was pressed against him.
“Diego,” he said again, and that was all. Nothing else to it, but Diego understood this time. An affirmation of gratitude in a whispered little tone, hidden every time he said their names. He’d fought so hard for them, and now Diego couldn’t stop imagining him when he was actually thirteen, alone and starving and whispering their names, putting everything into surviving so he could see them again. So he could come home.
It wasn’t fair that he couldn’t even have that.
Diego held him a little tighter, frail and bony and so, so cold. “You’re gonna be alright.” He was going to get better.
“I won’t tell anyone,” Five said softly, still below that careful whisper.
A laugh burst from Diego, surprised and a little wet. He swallowed the burning lump in his throat and closed his eyes so the tears would roll away and get lost on the pillow. “Thanks.”
“Don’t cry over me.”
Diego couldn’t answer that, couldn’t hold him any tighter, he could already feel his bones creaking. “You’ll be okay.”
“You’re an idiot.”
“Go to sleep.”
“I’ll wake up,” he promised.
Diego let out the breath he was holding like a balloon, eyes clouding. “Shut up and go to sleep.” It wasn’t even a fear, he refused to acknowledge it.
“I’m not worth… all this.”
“Shut up.” Diego gripped the back of his neck, too hard at first, making Five tense. He softened his hold, kneading his thumb into the muscle, feeling Five’s heart fluttering that awful off-rhythm beat against his fingertips. “Were we ever worth all that?”
“Yes,” he answered without hesitation. “You were.”
Diego shook his head, his chest aching, scratching gently into Five’s scalp. “You’re a part of this family, too.”
Five didn’t answer. He didn’t rebuke, didn’t affirm. Diego could feel him thinking about it, and hoped somewhere in that muddled little head of his that he’d at least internalize that. How could someone who loved so hard think he deserved so little in return. It wasn’t fair.
No more fair than how hard Five had to fight, only to die a few months after achieving it all. No, Diego refused. Five wasn’t going to die. Not yet, not this year or this decade. Five did everything in his power to protect them. It was time someone stepped up and did the same for him.

Maybe five hargreeves and reader? ❤️ W/ “I was looking for you”
A/N: Set during the wedding episode, somewhere in between the speeches and the dancing and the drunkenness and the end of the world.
(Reader is the same as in my other TUA fics—she’s Reginald’s biological daughter, born thirteen or so years after the others).
Tumblr media
“I was looking for you,” Five said with an air of success as he walked slowly down the hallway, a bottle of champagne in one hand and his blazer in the other. He wasn’t drunk yet, but he was well on his way towards it. Alas, as always, matters concerning his youngest sister came before the alcohol.
You turned your head from where it had been facing the ceiling. You were lying on the floor of the hallway, just far enough from the wedding party to successfully drown out the noise.
“Why?” you asked. Five stopped by your legs and shrugged. He glanced around before lowering himself to lie beside you, carefully placing the bottle next to him so it couldn’t get knocked over.
“You’re not one to miss a family celebration,” he said as he laced his fingers on his stomach. He moved to glance at you, missing your gaze by a second as you turned back to the ceiling. You were chewing at your bottom lip in a way that confirmed to Five what he had considered as the reason for you slipping out of the party before it had barely started. You’d been there one minute and gone the next, a hardly noticeable fact to someone who didn’t customarily scan the room every so often, just to ensure that everyone who should be present was present. Of course, Five was the possessor of such customary scans. He’d gone looking for you the moment he’d noted your absence, not at all oblivious to your emotions in the past few days. The whole family were aware, and Five was pretty certain that anyone would be better than him in this situation, but they’d been busy, and the alcohol was surging his confidence in his brotherly attributes already.
“Not much to celebrate.” Your mumbling permeated his thoughts, and he blinked himself back to reality. A loud burst of laughter seemed to echo down the hallway and you shut your eyes, letting your chest heave with a deep, totally needed breath. Five silently watched as you did so.
“Yeah,” he said after a moment, “you’re not wrong. Still, shouldn’t hold ourselves back in spite of that, right? Luther’s married now. I’d rather celebrate than...” He scrunched his nose in consideration. “Incinerate.”
Your gaze snapped to your brother, your face a picture of hardly concealed horror that had Five wincing. He sucked in a deep breath and ran quickly over possible words of consolidation in his head. He wasn’t tipsy enough for this.
“Am I the only one here who’s absolutely shitting myself?” You sat up and crossed your legs in front of you. “You’d think after the first and second apocalypse I’d get used to the idea of the world ending and me dying, but this time it’s—it’s so much realer. We’re actually gonna die.”
Despite Five’s faint victory at having you spill your usually carefully concealed emotions quicker than he knew was normal, he found that concern far prioritised it. Slowly, he pushed himself up, leaning back on his elbows. His brows knit together in swift sobriety as he dipped his head in acknowledgement. “Y/N...”
You tossed your hands up, your eyes suddenly welling with tears. “I’m not wrong, Five!” You pointed down the hallway. “They can sing and dance and—and kiss and make cheesy speeches all they want, but the fact of the matter is we’re all going to die. And I know they know that, and I know this party is a way to be together and distract ourselves from what’s coming, but it doesn’t always just work like that! I can’t—dispel it outta my mind. Whatever I do, whoever I’m with, it’s there. Reminding me over and over again that these are my last few breaths.” You squeezed your eyes shut and brought your hands to cover them. “I’m not one of you,” you said. “I don’t have powers. I’m just...normal. I’m a normal person surrounded by very much not normal people, and I really do feel like I’m the only one here who’s fucking terrified.”
If you were in the thinking mood, you would have pegged your brother’s face as unusually sympathetic once you’d opened your eyes and cleared your hazy vision. It wasn’t a secret to the family that Five had been away far too long to know how to comfort the youngest of you. If Diego were in his place, he’d sit opposite you and drill into you exactly everything you needed to hear, with his hands on your shoulders to ensure you looked him in the eye and couldn’t escape. Luther would cosy up beside you and try to distract you in his ridiculous, yet favourable, ways. Klaus usually made you meditate when he could sense you weren’t happy, then he grabbed you up in a bear hug and spoke a load of nonsense until you laughed. Allison was your usual go-to, your connection likely a result of growing up without a mother, while Viktor, though not entirely adept at consolation, had a way of soothing you with his hesitant words of supposed wisdom.
Five didn’t have the harshness of Diego, the humour of Luther, the stupidity of Klaus, the motherly nature of Allison, or the softness of Viktor. Put together, it created the exact combination you often needed. Five had to fit in there somewhere. He loved his siblings and you were obviously the most accepting of what little affection he sometimes provided, but the years he’d been away had been the entirety of your life before. He hadn’t been there then, but he was here now, and if there was one thing he had to offer, it was life experience.
“Would it help if I told you I’m just as terrified?“ he asked slowly. When you lowered your hands to look at him, he bumped his brows in silent repetition of the question.
Your shoulders dropped as you let out a breath. You sniffed and wiped at your cheek. “Yes, actually,” you admitted.
“Well—” Five lay back again, reaching his arms above his head— “I am. We all are, I assure you. I’ve experienced many doomsdays, Y/N, and it never gets easier.” He offered a smirk in your direction. “If you can believe that.”
You smiled lightly and pulled your knees up to your chest as he continued.
“You’re right that this is different. You’re right that we haven’t got long, and you’re right that this wedding stuff is just a distraction. But what’s wrong with a distraction?”
“It’s not the distraction, it’s…” You faltered, biting your tongue and dropping your gaze in obvious reluctance. Somehow, saying the words felt as though it would fuel the harshness of your reality.
“I know, I know,” Five said. “It’s the reason for the distraction.” He sighed, his eyes hardening as he looked at you. “I don’t know what to say that’ll make this any easier. For once, I can’t do anything that I haven’t tried. And I’m sorry. For your sake, I’m so sorry. Because you don’t deserve this. You don’t deserve us as siblings or Reginald as your father. What you do deserve is a good shot at life, and you’re not going to get that. So if this celebration is for anyone, it’s for you, and nobody in there would disagree with me.” He turned his head down the corridor, the beats of the music reverberating around you. He could hear Luther yelling something, probably butchered lyrics, and then there was a clash. In an attempt not to come up with all kinds of scenarios as to what that could have been, he turned back to you. You looked far more deflated but far less terrified. Five couldn’t tell if that was good or not. Still, he softened his expression and reached a hand out to squeeze your knee. “There’s not much we can do now,” he said gently, “other than try to make the best of what we have left and…remember everything good before.”
You sniffed and nodded slowly. You picked at a loose thread on the jeans you’d been wearing since arriving at the hotel. “There’s quite a lot of good to remember,” you murmured. Five’s lips quirked up in a half-hearted smile.
"Enough to tide you over until the end, you think?”
“Do you think it’ll hurt?”
He let his cheeks fill with air at that question before he exhaled. The truth was that he had no idea. It had never gotten to that point in all the other apocalypses. But sometimes, lying is the best thing you can do for someone in a situation. Often, the recipient of that lie knows the percentage of truth to it.
“Nah,” he said, waving it off with a flick of his wrist. “It’ll be like falling asleep, just with less control.” He hesitated then, staring at a stain on the ceiling. Perhaps his next words were subconscious, said without much thought. And perhaps they were as much a reassurance for him as they were for you. “I think that whatever happens, we’ll all be together.”
You allowed a short silence, settling with the new facts, then breathed a short laugh through your nose. “You’re drunk,” you said.
Five narrowed his eyes and whipped them to lock with yours. What a way to ruin a heartfelt conversation. Especially one that wasn’t particularly easy for him to partake him.
“You’d know if I was drunk,” he stated honestly. “Trust me, this is all coming from here.” He tapped his head. After a moment’s pause, he pointed at his heart. “And a bit from here, I guess.” Before your smile could widen any further, he heaved himself up into a sitting position and picked up his champagne bottle. “That’s not to say I won’t be getting drunk. You want some?”
“Legal drinking age is twenty-one.”
Five grimaced, his entire body recoiling at your comment. “I’m...gonna pretend you didn’t just say that.” At your shrug, he tipped his head slightly to the side, pressed his lips together in a thin line, and gave you a dead stare. “It’s the end of time, little sister. Have a drink.”
You took the extended bottle with an amused roll of your eyes and circled your finger around the top. “Thank you, Five.”
“Hey, I’m not bowing down to goodbye speeches, but if I’m gonna say one thing, it’s thank you. I’ve done a lot of bad stuff in my life…seen a lot of crap, lived through of a lot of ‘the ends’…but you, Y/N, are a gentle ripple in an ocean of pernicious waves. Always have been, always will be. Wherever we end up after this.”
There were moments when Five acted less like the imperious, sarcastic old man he was, and more like the brother you often wished for and imagined. You’d been a baby when he’d disappeared, so this Five was the only Five you knew, but your siblings often talked about the Five before. Moments like these, not that there were many, brought you close to what knowing that Five might have felt like.
“Heyyy! What’re we doing?” Klaus’s voice, followed by the slam of a door, echoed down the hallway, interrupting any response you may have given. You and Five turned towards it, him grabbing his bottle back and taking a long swig at the sight of your eccentric brother, very obviously already drunk, strutting towards you.
“Five’s drunk,” you told him, your voice airy in a way that told Five you were happier in yourself after your conversation.
He made a noise as the top of the bottle popped out of his mouth. “I’m not drunk yet,” he said again, pointing a finger at you.
“Are we getting drunk?” Klaus tripped over his own feet just as Ben stumbled out of the party room with his own bottle of half-finished, currently unidentifiable alcohol. “‘Cause I’m toootally down for that.”
“You’re already drunk, Klaus,” you reminded him. You lay back down again and let him squeeze his intoxicated self between you and Five.
“More is less, Titch,” Klaus said dreamily as he reached an arm across you and pulled you into his side.
You laughed, your face squished against his shoulder. “That is not the saying.”
“Anyone want some whiskey?” Ben asked before he flopped down beside Klaus and the bottle he’d been holding emptied its contents over his chest. “Fucking shit.”
“Benerrino! No swearing with the children around.” Klaus covered your ears and lifted a leg to stretch across you and towards Five. Five hit his foot away and shifted to lie beside you before he silently pulled a handkerchief from a pocket of his blazer and tossed it to Ben.
“Ah! You’re a gem, kid.”
“Not a kid, kid.”
Klaus gasped. “There’re, like, blood stains on this ceiling."
“Hey, party-poopers!” Four heads turned, the two drunkest lifting theirs with audible effort to see above you and Five. Diego had stuck his head out the party room and was confoundedly staring at them. A second later, Lila’s head appeared above him. “The hell are you doing out here?” Diego called, tossing his arms up in question.
“Getting drunk!” Klaus lifted Ben’s empty whiskey bottle.
“Count me in!” Lila said. A moment later she was lying beside Five. Another moment later, a yelp of shock sounded from Diego as Lila yanked him down next to her. A series of muttered insults spewed between them, though Diego made no move to get up.
No one was quite sure when Viktor joined the line you’d made in the hallway of the Hotel Obsidian, or when Allison appeared on the top step of the opposite staircase, her head leaning against the banister. At some point, Luther and Sloane had come searching for you, the former insisting that you come dance with him to your karaoke song, but had ended up tacking themselves onto the end of the line. There were both full and empty bottles of varying alcohol strewn around you, and a few bowls of snacks that Lila had raced back to grab. The ten of you had then broken into unrestrained laughter when Lila told them that Reginald and Chet had resorted to an apparently awkward silence with the absence of the Hargreeves family.
You talked, you got drunk, you laughed, Luther cried. Memories resurfaced and Diego finally discovered that it was Five who’d put slugs in his bed when they’d been kids. Allison laughed for the first time since the beginning of this apocalypse and she and Sloane engaged in some absent game of catch with a single m&m. Ben drunkenly apologised a grand total of six times for being a dick and Luther cried again after saying he forgave him. Klaus may have unofficially married Lila and Diego and Viktor got hit in the face with a sushi roll.
And, as you glanced across at Five, smiling at the wink he gave you, you genuinely believed that if the world were to end now, you were so happy you wouldn’t even notice.
