I think the one thing that I love the most about GoW (2018) and GoW: Ragnarok is the fact that the women of the world have the most power out of all of their male counterparts. And it isn't because they have higher power or any special abilities.
It is because they are women. And they are messy and angry and don't always have the best view of the world, themselves or others.
And that they are actually respected by the story itself.
Like, say what you will about how Faye had to die to kickstart Kratos' redemption arc, but I find it unbelievably badass that said dead woman played the long-game of the century, made herself a living legend in all of the 9 realms, knew fully that she was going to die young, but instead of wallowing in despair, she chose to smile and love her husband, son, her heritage and friends to the fullest despite it all.
Freya rallies armies, beats the shit out of her ex, regains her warrior spirit, reunites and rekindles her relationship with both her Valkyrie sisters, Kratos and Atreus and twin brother, heals from the death of her son and regains a new family.
Angrboda uses her companionship, trust and gentleness with Atreus to show him a glimpse at the life and skills of a giant, peace and comfort and overall domesticity that he had been lacking back home due to odin and fimbulwinter, as well as give him the skills needed for his journey into who Loki is.
The Valkyries are able to be well respected warriors who are fully proud to be fighting aside true commanders and fighters and not have to follow Odin's command.
Thrud becomes worthy to wield her fathers hammer, is respected by her mother and those around her for the first time.
Sif controls, rallies and persuades Thor, the meanest of the aesir to nearly kill Atreus and Kratos for revenge against the deaths of their sons, just by her words and love for him alone. SHe even tries to be a better mother to Thrud due to having lost Magni and Modi.
The Norns freely use their creepiness and vast knowledge of fate and time and wisdom to scare the shit out everyone they meet and because of that, people don't dare mess with them, not even fucking mansplain-manipulate-manslughter Odin.
The Lady beneath the water is so respected and worshiped that it's factually known that you don't talk to the lady, she talks to you.
A lot of GoW is about swinging axes and ripping apart enemies. But the most powerful characters don't do that. They use their emotions and smarts and intelligence rather than their fists.
the true character arc for God of War isnt about Kratos at all.
It's the fact that God of War went from a dudebro power-fantasy hack-n-slash game where the women were either relegated to sex minigames, sub-par emotional justification for *why* we are killing gods, and villainous roles---to actual 3-dimentional characters who are given proper respect, courtesy and value, who are integral to the story as a whole and are crucial to the long term consequences of the game.

Buddy Request: are you a Loki obsessed high fantasy lover?
I would really like to connect with fellow Loki fans who want to rant about/analyze Loki and Thor's psychology, family dynamics, Asgardian society, Jotunheim, magic/seiðr, and the Nine Realms. Ideas/thoughts that aren't canon-compliant with the MCU are more than welcome!
Here are some fics with these types of themes that I have thoroughly enjoyed and been inspired by:
Ásgarðrian Galdr by Valerie_Vancollie
Bargaining by proantagonist ( @proantagonista ) [thank you SO MUCH for the rec @alwida10!]
Frostbite by Maiden_of_Asgard
Once More With Empathy by Kairyn ( @bfaymiller )
A Fairytale Beginning by the_lady_amphitrite ( @the-lady-amphitrite )
Let me set the scene:
For the past year and a half, I've been working on developing a longfic featuring a Thor 2011 Loki and an OC Sigyn. Honestly, I don't think that I'll get around to posting it anytime soon (there's still so much work to be done on it), but it's constantly on my mind. It's sort of a hybrid concept of the MCU, Norse Mythology, my own ideas, OCs, and magic systems. It has an epic scope with multiple arcs and characters from most of the Nine Realms. Do you like characters with wings? I got you covered. An imminent threat to the Nine Realms? Check. An in-depth analysis of Ásgarðr and Jǫtunheimr's history uncovered during Loki's identity crisis? A Jǫtunn OC? A Laufey that never wanted to lose their child? Check, check, and check.
I've found it hard to talk to people about all this because it involves a LOT of worldbuilding. Epic fantasy definitely isn't for everyone and this will not be a "light" read. Some non-fanfic stories that have inspired me along the way include the Roots of Chaos series by Samantha Shannon (The Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night) and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. So if you like those types of stories, you might like the ideas I come up with.
If you relate to anything I've said, I also want to mention that I would love to hear about your ideas as well! If you feel trapped inside your own head and feel hesitant to "info-dump" on people, I am the person for you. And hey, maybe we can inspire each other :) Fanfiction is not about gatekeeping, and I have been unabashedly inspired by so many different takes on Loki that I've read along the way.
Sending this out into the Tumblr void, hoping it finds the right people!

Its said there are more norns than just the main 3.
There are dwarf norns, and elf norns, beast norns and man norns.
But when pepole speak of THE norns, most of the time they reffer to the 3 main norns of time and fate itself.
Urd, Verdandi and Skuld.

The Evermore Grimoire: Norse Mythology
The Norns were female beings who ruled the destiny of gods and men in Norse mythology. It was believed that they also decided the destinies of giants, and dwarfs, and were responsible for the fates of every individual human being. Their names were Urd, Verdandi and Skuld. They dwelled within the Well of Urd beneath Yggdrasil, the great ash tree that stood at the centre of the universe and held the Nine Worlds in its branches and roots. They shaped destiny by carving runes into the trunk of the tree, or, in some sagas and poems, by weaving destiny like a web or tapestry. Their counterparts are the Morai from Greek mythology.

Invocation of the Norns
Oh Mother Goddesses of Time, You who sit among the honored ranks of the Mothers, Who govern the ebb and flow of the tides of fate, Who know the many-forked way of all things, Be welcome with us now.
Oh Shapers of our Wyrd, You who guide our destiny, Who hear our hopes and fears, Who write Your plans on the roots of the World Tree, Be welcome with us now.
Oh Great Priestesses, You who preside over life’s important moments, Who are invoked on occasions of birth, death, and great change, Who alone have the power to make order in the chaos of the Void, Be welcome with us now.
Hail the Norns!

People believe that for magic to be truly effective, it must be instantaneous and a tried and true method for every person. But my way cannot be another's way. I work with the ebb and flow of nature. Sometimes, nature is slow, prolonged. Problems and situations take time to manage, to heal, or deal with. Other times, it can be fast, but maybe not as much as people would like.
All things have limitations. Even magic, even gods. So, not everything can be instantaneous or even work for others or ourselves all the time. Just as much as some things in nature may be more effective depending on our personal biology.
When you mess with the ebb and flow, you start to break down the systems of balance. When you begin to alter and tear at the threads that bind us all. Just as there is balance to nature, there is balance in magic. When things are forced in ways, even of the ways through our sciences, unexpected things can happen. In my view, it's the way the world, the way web of wyrd works, and the will of the Norns to keep balance as they nurture the great tree. For the sake of continued existence.
