the Legion is an ever-shifting group of people moving in and out of one apartment due to capitalism being a heck. 🌟 My dad is the reason why I got into sci-fi and fantasy when I was a very little girl. He's always encouraged my creativity. "Out There: The 1K" is dedicated to him.

I have ADHD and high functioning autism. I was recently diagnosed in mid Sept. 2022. It's nice to finally know why my life has been so hard, and why I always thought I was a broken human, and "wrong."

📕 I've had a novel published in 2011: "Itara: Son of C'reseth." - a sword and sorcery story. I consider it my biggest accomplishment while simultaneously my biggest failure.

I accepted a challenge to describe my story in the worst way possible, and came up with this:

It's about a reluctant disaster space found family running from people out to throw two Terran-human ten-year-olds with powers from an extinct human species at their collective galactic problem.

⭐

🌟⭐🌟SYNOPSIS🌟⭐🌟

One thousand children prophesied to save a galaxy embroiled in war are taken from Earth at the turn of the 21st century. The children are scattered throughout Alliance worlds to hide them from the terrifying, unseen antagonistic force that would destroy them, the keth.

This story follows the frightening and fantastical adventures of two of those children - Will and Terra - who are genetically altered to possess a strange power for a plan to end the war.

Yune Darrak - a lone spaceship pilot who ekes out a living as a salvager, bounty hunter, and treasure hunter, and Selka Kelnaris - a disillusioned, empathic, Ai Hiri bounty hunter - accidentally rescue them from a Regent secret lab while on a bounty hunt. They travel to a remote agrarian planet where Yune will hand the kids over to Selka once he gets her ship back from the planet's leader, so he can get his life back. A simple plan spirals into a deep, confusing mess involving a mysterious blue light known as the Source Field, a political coup, and more questions about the kids and Yune himself as all four are inadvertently caught up in the middle of a battle they never wanted to fight.

Katie Gemwing TV Tropes

A/N: Warning, this fanmade tropes will have some spoilers for certain parts of stories of The Dreamstones series for those who have yet to read them. And some tropes will be renamed due my “No swearing” policy. Read at your own risk but also please enjoy.

The Ace: All three members of the Dreamstones are skilled and powerful in their rights, but Katie has her awesome moments.

She is skilled at archery three years straight.

As a Crystal Dragon, she can master multiple elements similar to TLoS Spyro and Cynder.

Action Girl: Big time!

Actually Pretty Funny:

In Chapter 1: Pulled Into a Book, she smirked in amusement when Lexie joking pulls out her Bible to marry a laughing Natty to a slice of pizza when Natty jokingly asked if she could marry pizza.

In Chapter 19: Take to the Skies, she actually giggles along with her friends when they were amused by her calling the Devil “Luci”.

Adult Fear: As the oldest in the group, Katie often fears of the constant dangers her friends face up, whether it’s Lexie and Natty’s unwanted lovers or the kids getting bullied or threatened.

Next to Lexie, Katie is most horrified and guilt-stricken when King Dice stole Mugman’s soul during their confrontation in Misterie’s shop.

Matt, Liam’s kid brother is often in some potential danger ranging from several kidnappings and being surrounded by the Devil’s minions.

Kaichi the Sprigon also counts on being targeted due to his small size.

And the fact that TCS Cuphead owing the Devil his soul can do a real number on her Paranoia Fuel.

Adventure Couple: With Validor since the third season of The Cuphead Show: Dreamstones Edition.

Affectionate Nickname:

Her friends and most of her family calls her Kate.

Both versions of Mugman often refer to her as Miss Katie. Henchman also does the same as well as Clank from the Ratchet & Clank franchise.

TCS Ms. Chalice often calls her either “Sparkles”, “Glitter Wings” and “Blue Eyes”.

Starlight is one from her sister.

Hilda Berg from the book nicknames her Moonbeam.

Validor affectionately refers to her as “Oceanfire” due to some comparing her eyes to the ocean as she has a fiery spirit in her depths.

Afraid of Needles: Much like Lexie, Katie is terrified of injection needles for obvious reasons and hates every time she has to go to a doctor’s appointment that involves needles.

All of the Other Reindeer: Being born with autism, Katie had difficulties with some things and she was badly bullied at school, mainly as a teenager.

All-Loving Heroine:

All Your Powers Combined: Unlike Spyro and Cynder, Katie is able to combine two per elements together to form into a much more effective Fury attack blast. Her prime example is defeat her fight with the Devil from the book by combining her Ice and Electricity Fury blasts into an electrical snowstorm.

Alone Among the Couples: Throughout Heart, Soul & Mind, it’s sequel, Playing with Loaded Dice and the first and second season of The Cuphead Show: Dreamstones Edition, Katie is the only one among the main trio who doesn’t have a Love Interest. Her boyfriend, Validor is later introduced in season 3.

Amnesia Danger: She briefly has amnesia which the Devil takes advantage of her memory loss by manipulating her into believing she is his fiancée and that her friends are the bad guys. Luckily, his plan didn’t work.

And Now, You Must Marry Me: Of all people, both versions of Cuphead’s Devil wants to her to be his queen, going as far as kidnapping, blackmailing and even trying to trick her into becoming his bride.

Animal Motifs:

Dragons. The dragon is her Chinese Zodiac sign and she has several dragon themed ornaments and plushies in her collection as well as a Spyro the Dragon themed purse-wallet and a Spyro the Dragon game controller holder in her bedroom. She also has fondness for shiny things such as gems, which is a trait among dragons.

Swans. According to both versions of the Devil, Katie is often compared to a swan from being beautiful and graceful to fierce and aggressive when provoked, especially when her friends are in danger.

She often associates with dragonflies as Lexie does with butterflies while Natty goes with fireflies.

Battle Couple: With Validor.

Beautiful Singing Voice:

Be Careful What You Wish For: Having it the hardest in the Real World where she often feels like she’s unappreciated and unwanted, Katie wishes to live out her childhood dream to live among toons and go on adventures like in her favourite movies. After she had found the Cuphead book with the gemstones, her wish coming true was a lot more than she had bargained when the Devil is involved.

Berserk Button: Although she rarely loses her cool, Katie still has a number of buttons best not to be pushed.

King Dice and Anubis are always on the receiving end of her wrath whenever they come onto Lexie and Natty.

For some reason, she hates being called “sweetcheeks” TCS Sal Spudder learned that the hard way when she, Lexie and Natty scared him, Chauncey Chutney and Ollie Bulb off before they could attempt to soak up the nutrients out of Elder Kettle’s vegetable garden to spite the Cup Bros.

She hates the worst people pulling a Karma Houdini, especially when they’ve pulled some heinous acts out of spite and for the sake of being cruel.

She also can’t stand tyrannical and controlling parents who abuse their own children and force things onto them such as who they should be friends.

Don’t take advantage of either her or her friends’ kindness and trust, most especially Lexie’s. Dice had certainty learned that the hard way.

Animal and child abuse is a sure way to set her off.

She has ZERO tolerance towards bullies.

For personal reasons, mentions of her fights with her stepfather counts as one.

Never, under any circumstances, insult or badmouth about her boyfriend.

Do NOT ever come in between true love. Katie questions how many times she had to teach Dice Anubis that lesson.

Similar to Sonic the Hedgehog not liking being called a rat in some of his games, Katie hates it whenever someone calls her a gecko.

Also, do not play with her emotions, betray her or break her heart in the worst way possible.

Beware the Nice Ones: Next to Lexie and Natty, Katie is one of the sweetest and nicest people you could ever meet. However, when it concerns her friends either being bullied or harassed by unwanted lovers, she can also be the most fiercest when one of her buttons are pushed.

Big Eater: While thankfully nowhere near the extent of Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise, Katie still enjoys some tasty food and can be extremely excited about dinner and going out for ice cream with her friends.

Big “NEVER!”: Similar to mentioned below. Big “NO!”: Katie is often prone to scream this one out whenever something bad is about to happen or when either versions of the Devil from the Cuphead is coming onto her.

Big Sister Instincts: She has a sisterly friendship with Lexie and Natty, and to the extension, Matt, Liam, the Cup Brothers and even Ms. Chalice. Whenever either of them are in trouble, she will not hesitate to dive in to the rescue.

Blow You Away: Wind is one of her multiple elements. Its attacks allow her to literally blow her enemies away. They also allow her to buffet enemies and throw them about, and foes struck by them are left hanging in the air and vulnerable to attack.

Blue is Heroic: She dresses in plenty of blue, her dragon form is crystal blue and she is one of the heroes.

Breath Weapon: As a dragon, she obviously has that. Much like Spyro and Cynder from The Legend of Spyro Trilogy, she has multiple distinct elements - fire, ice, electricity, earth and wind. She also has the ability to master the Light Aether element in certain occasions.

Break the Cutie: In Heart, Soul & Mind, the Devil had attempted to break all three girls’ spirit by taking the souls of the former debtors. Katie is hit the hardest when she suffered a nightmare about being blamed due to have finding the “Cuphead: Don’t Deal with the Devil” book to begin with. However, in the rest of the story, she gets better.

Bully Hunter:

Calling Parents By Their Name: Or in her case, calling stepparents by their name. Whenever he upsets, Katie bitterly calls her stepdad by his name behind his back. She only does by in private, although this habit is often mentioned in her P.O.V once in a while. In her defence, her relationship with him is… strained.

Celestial Body: Her feathery wings occasionally glimmer with starry sparkles and they glow with bright blue and purple Auroras whenever she’s about to unleash a Light Aether Fury or breath attack.

Crush Blush: She occasionally blushes when Validor compliments her or when he states his fondness of her traits.

Cute Clumsy Girl: She has her moments of being mildly accident prone.

Damsel In Distress: Subverted. Despite being armed with a Keyblade, a summon charm to summon allies from various franchises and is able to turn into a dragon, whenever she’s either disarmed or if something blocks out her magic, she is prone to be captured and taken hostage against her. She will often have her friends helping her out of scrapes that she can’t handle alone.

Damsel Out of Distress: When push comes to shove, Katie is capable of being her own hero from time to time and will resort to her resourcefulness and cunning to get her out of trouble. Defiant Captive:

Disappeared Dad: When she and her older sister were very young, her biological father had divorced with her mother and moved away. And when she was somewhere in her late 20’s, he passed away from over alcohol poison due to over drinking.

Does Not Like Spam: Katie has a handful of certain foods she does not like or hate with a passion.

She really hates mushrooms. She most especially hates the smell of any being cooked.

She doesn’t like extra mature cheese due to the strong smell and texture.

She doesn’t like lamb and she despises the idea of eating kidneys and livers.

She’s not a fan of black liquorice.

And for personal reasons, she refuses to drink any types of alcoholic drinks.

Ironically, she also doesn’t drink coffee. She doesn’t like the taste.

Even Loving Heroes Have Hated Ones: As sweet and compassionate as she is, Katie still has a number of people she despises due to their lack of redeeming qualities.

She gets overly irritated with both versions of King coming onto Lexie.

She has a heated rivalry with Anubis since he had been lusting for Natty and he has some ways of getting under her skin. And the fact of his career as a bounty hunter and resorting to kidnapping Cuphead certainly didn’t do him any much favours to elude her wrath.

With his snobby attitude and his tendency to steal other people’s musical works to pass them up as his own to take all the credit, Ludwig has the displeasure of being added onto Katie’s list.

She could never bring herself to forgive her bullies after how they had treated her at school. Her reasons are justified since they had never apologised.

Everyone Has Standards:

Played for laughs, she hates pineapple on pizza.

She also doesn’t like raisins in cookies.

She really doesn’t like bathroom humour because she finds it gross.

While it’s true she can agree that most children should be disciplined whenever they misbehave but she is against Corporal Punishment because she believes physical punishment is basically child abuse. She even finds spanking to be too harsh.

While she finds most slapstick humour to be funny off from TV, she doesn’t like the idea of her cartoon friends getting badly hurt or worse in the situation is much more serious.

Although she has every right to hate and resent her past bullies for mistreating her back in school, Katie would never bring herself to stoop down to their level when the Devil (game) had offered her the power to get revenge on them once she agrees to be his queen.

Everyone Hates Mathematics: Her worst and most frustratingly hated subject at school.

Friendless Background: Before Lexie and Natty, Katie didn’t had any much friends at school due to being bullied.

Friend to All Children: If her interaction with Matt and the Cups are of any indications.

Friend to All Living Things:

Gamer Girl: Dating back to playing Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage (Gateway to Glimmer back in the UK) on the PlayStation 1, Katie enjoys playing video games and is a veteran Pokemon gamer dating back to having Pokemon Yellow: Pikachu Special Edition on the GameBoy Colour.

A Girl and Her X: In some case, a woman and her Sprigon companion.

Girls Are Really Scared of Horror Movies: Katie’s not really a fan of horror movies because she can’t stand extreme blood and gory scenes. And she doesn’t like any horror themed video games due to the overly graphic death cutscenes if the player loses. Not to mention the Jump Scare scenarios don’t sit well with her either.

Girls Love Chocolate: No arguments that chocolate is her Trademark Favourite Food.

Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has a collection of stuffed toys and plushies back home.

Good is Not Soft: She is one of the sweetest, nicest and compassionate of the Dreamstones girl, but when villains, bullies or creeps threaten her friends and love, that’s when the gloves are off.

Graceful Ladies Like Purple: It is one of her favourite colours. Her belt bag is purple as well as the scarf-like ribbons at the bottom of her necklace in her dragon form. She also wears purple clothing such as her pyjamas, swimsuit and some dresses everyone now and then.

Growing Up Sucks: Sadly, she feels like it does given how she is often at odds with her stepfather and her struggles with her autism.

Hardcore Bookworm: She enjoys reading and is a very powerful dragon half-blood.

Hardocore Adorable:

Has a Type: Her ideal man is sweet, kind, honest, caring and very accepting of how she is. She also likes a man who is a proper gentleman with a sense of chivalry, puts others before himself, is good with kids, a Friend to All Living things and is a Cool Big Bro.

Hates Dresses: Subverted. She’s okay with wearing dresses on special and formal occasions such as a date at a fancy restaurant or an invitation to a gala. The only times she hates being a dress if she’s a victim of Go-Go Enslavement. She also finds wearing a dress limits her mobility when she needs to get around and would very likely trip over the hem of the skirts.

The Heart: According to Misterie, Katie, as the Binder, is the Heart of the Dreamstones and she often tries to keep everyone together.

Heroic Dog Lover: She’s a huge dog lover and she has two dogs back in the Real World - a Samoyed and a Pomeranian.

Hidden Depths:

She enjoys doing some cross-stitching and is excellent at embroidery. Her specialities are making Bookmarks in the theme of PokeBalls and flowery hearts.

Bowling is actually her most favourite ball game and enjoys playing it.

Hope Bringer:

Iconic Outfit: Her Crystal blue cold shoulder jacket with the flowing bell-shaped sleeves, long midnight blue handles gloves along with her medium denim jeans, back boots, midnight blue tank top with the light blue shoulders, purple belt bag, bracelets and book-shaped locket is her trademark look. She retains it throughout the stories while Lexie Natty go through an upgrade.

I Did What I Had to Do:

I Just Want to Be Special: One of her wishes was to be someone who could make the world a better place and is respected, appreciated and loved as a hero. She had often wondered if people would be nicer to her if she was someone who matters.

I Just Want to Have Friends:

Innocent Blue Eyes:

In-Series Nickname: She is affectionately called Kate by her friends throughout their adventures.

Irony: Yep, even Katie has a list of a few things.

She’s half-dragon and she can breathe fire but she doesn’t like spicy food of any sort.

She likes ketchup and Heinz tomato soup, but for some reason, she hates actual tomatoes. Probably because she doesn’t like what the insides look like with the seeds and juice.

She ironically doesn’t like actual oranges due to the texture but she’s okay with drinking fresh orange juice (as long as it’s purely smooth and doesn’t have bits in it).

Despite her British origin, she doesn’t drink tea, much to TCS Devil’s surprise and the confusion of some toons who stereotype her.

Lexie and Natty often compare the Cuphead Devils as the King Bowesr Koopa to Katie’s Princess Peach although she has yet to play any of the Super Mario games.

Despite being old enough to drink, Katie hates alcoholic beverages of any type due to personal reasons.

She’s also old enough to drink coffee but she hates the taste of how bitter it is.

It’s All My Fault: She took full responsibility of her friends when she was the one who had found the book and gemstones and is quick to blame herself.

Kiddie Kid:

Despite being in her thirties, Katie is a child at heart due to her autism given her Fangirl obsession with cartoons and video games but she can still be mature when she needs to be.

She also doesn’t drink coffee or any alcoholic beverages, preferring mostly soda and frappes.

Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Although she leans more to being a dog person, Katie still like cats as she gushes over Aya and squees over the cuteness of a curious kitten bounding up to her for a pet.

Let’s Get Dangerous!:

Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: Whenever Liam and Lexie or Natty and Andrew are having a romantic moment, Katie is prone to catch on that the lovers need a little alone time with being in each other’s company and ushers the others away while leaving herself.

Magic Pants: Whenever she turns back into a human, her clothes are still intact.

Magical Accessory:

Hey Keyblade transforms into the blue bracelet with the white and purple beads she wears.

In her dragon form, she wears a necklace that magical summons special armour for protection or to enhance her abilities on certain occasions.

Mama Bear: The eldest out of the Dreamstones girls and is overly protective of her friends. She also seems to have some motherly instincts towards Matt, Kaichi and the Cups.

Katie means “pure” in Greek, fitting for her sweet and curious nature.

In the Ancient Language of the Dragons, her middle name, Estelaria means “Daughter of the Stars” since the egg her ancestral namesake was said to be brought down from the stars.

Her surname, Gemwing has some meanings as well since her wings often have star-like glimmers and glints like a gemstone. Turns out there’s a rare gem in the Dragon Realms called the Midnight Opal, which is a dark blue gem that has a starry luster.

Nice Girl: A sweet, bubbly and well-meaning woman.

Not Above It All:

Despite her zig-zagged fear of the Devil, she’s not above giving him terms of insults whether it’s behind his back or right up to his face, going far as to call him “Luci”.

She has her moments with making up some puns, much to the amusement of her friends and expanse of the bad guys.

She’s not above expressing her inner child when she gets excited about somethings like Christmas and enjoying chocolate and ice cream.

Oh, Crud!: Phrase Catcher: Cuphead does a mild modification to his best known Catchphrase for Katie and the girls with this quote: “Eh, don’t be too worried about it”.

Playing Hard to Get: Both versions of the Devil from the Cuphead universe believed her to be doing this whenever she refuses his advances.

Please, I Will Do Anything!:

Running Away to Cry: Whenever she’s upset and wants to be alone, Katie runs off in tears. This trait is what kicks off the first adventure in Heart, Soul & Mind where she finds the Cuphead book with the three gemstones planted in the bookshop at her local town by the Devil.

Running Gag: She sometimes will zap TCS Devil with her electric breath in the same fashion like in the Sweater episodes or occasionally like in The Devil’s pitchfork whenever she’s defending herself or when she wanted to deliver some payback.

Say My name:

Katie is prone to scream out for her friends’ names whenever they’re in trouble with their unwanted lovers or when either versions of the Devil is about to take her away.

She often says or cries out Cuphead’s name either to scold him when he does or says something irresponsible or if he’s in danger (mainly with the Devil).

She Cleans Up Nicely: Normally wears gender-neutral clothes and is always seen in her Iconic Outfit, she can still dresses up in elegant gowns and cute dresses on certain occasions. And is just as pretty in a dress as Lexie and Natty.

Single Woman Seek Good Man: She made it clear to both versions of the Devil her reasons why she would never marry him. Since Validor arrived, she is head over heels for his kind-hearted nature.

So Beautiful, It’s a Curse: In the eyes of both versions of the Devil from the Cuphead franchise, Katie is deemed the most beautiful as well as very powerful for her powers. And it certainly doesn’t help that she often attracts unwanted attention from more some other darker admirers such as the dreaded pirate overlord, Levithaus.

Stepford Smiler: While she does a bubbly personality, there are times that Katie can be emotionally troubled when it concerns her with her rocky relationship with her stepdad and struggles to put up a brave face and a cheerful facade to mask her anxiety and woes.

Squee: She’s a die-hard fan of certain franchises and will fangirl extremely hard over the latest Pokémon game, anime or even the possibility of a new Spyro the Dragon follow up game to the Reignited Trilogy.

Sweet Tooth: She has a great love for sweets, mainly chocolate, cake and ice cream.

Tears of Fear: Not very often but she will sometimes shed some of these when most terrified.

Tears of Remorse: She is often prone to express her guilt and remorse over honest mistakes or if she feels at fault through crying.

Tender Tears: Potentially the most emotional of the Dreamstones girls. Being autistic, she is sometimes most prone to be driven to tears of pain, sadness, frustration and when she feels emotionally helpless. This happened a lot at school as well her fights with her stepdad.

Term of Endangerment:

Both versions of the Devil often refer to her as “my dear”, “my sweet”, “my darling”, “my little one” “sweetheart”, and “my little dragonfly”.

By Leviathius, she is “my dear”, “my sweet”, “my love”, “my treasure”, “my shining pearl”, “my little mermaid”, and “my siren”.

Tomboy With a Girly Streak: Although she’s a tomboy, Katie isn’t above keeping in touch with her feminine side as she sometimes wears a dress in special occasions and dabs on some perfume. She also likes shiny things, the colour pink and adorable cute things.

Trademark Favourite Food:

Chocolate in any form in all of its glory. Milk chocolate is the best.

Red velvet cake is one of her favourites.

She also enjoys ice cream. Most especially chocolate, vanilla, coconut and cookies & crème.

For savoury, her favourite is pizza, especially if it has southern fried chicken with extra cheese and a barbecue sauce base.

Being British, she enjoys a Sunday roast with either chicken or turkey, mashed potatoes, carrots, roast potatoes, homemade stuffing and bread pudding, pigs in blankets, plenty of gravy and Yorkshire puddings.

Well, more of a favourite drink than food, really but she loves fizzy drinks between Coke Zero and Pepsi Max in either normal, cherry or vanilla flavour.

Trapped in a World: Twice in fact alongside Lexie, Natty, Liam and Matt. Once in the game version the Cuphead universes via a book. And the second time was in the TCS version.

Trying Not to Cry: She often tries to keep her emotions in check but once the water works start building, she can’t seem to stop until she has a moment to herself to calm down.

What Beautiful Eyes!: Her blue eyes are said to be very beautiful indeed. A rare Crystal Dragon trait is that her eyes sometime literally sparkle. According to both versions of the Devil, her eyes are like the ocean, deep and mysteries and sparkle when the sunlight glistens over the water.

Why Did It Had to be Snakes?:

She has a crippling phobia of wasps due to being stung by one in her palm as a child when she accidentally trapped it between her head and hand.

She also hates scorpions due to how deadly their stingers are. So, it’s understandable that is scared at the thought of dying of being stung by one.

As mentioned above concerning needles, she always dreads going to the doctor’s for an injection. No matter how small it is.

Both versions of the Devils still count in a way since he tries to force her to marry him. TCS Devil, taking on a Let’s Get Dangerous turn can actually be terrifying when he wants to be.

Your Favourite: The Devil had been doing a LOT of research on Katie when he often serves her favourite dishes when inviting dinner. Even going as far as buying her certain chocolates she likes and giving her a bouquet of her favourite flowers.

I'm working on a few projects right now, heck even serval, but some aren’t really fleshed out yet, so I’m only gonna give a few. A show called Epic Club, two webcomics called D!0X!D3 and VQ895, and a graphic novel called Web Hell. I Love My Sister Chronicles

Dreams are weird, especially when two simple hours could sometimes feel like an entire lifetime. On Self-Diagnosis

Something that has long been discussed in autistic spaces (and in other spaces related to cognitive disabilities too) is the validity of self-diagnosis. The Neurodiversity Movement is largely pro self-diagnosis. However, there are many people who are against the idea altogether. It just so happens that in the early days of the Neurodiversity Movement, a term was coined by Xenia Grant that has largely been lost to time-that being cousins. You can read more about the origins of cousins in History of ANI (under “strangers and cousins”) and in a blog post by Mel Baggs. People used “ACs” aka “autistics and cousins” when referring to people who were autistic and/or otherwise neurodivergent. The first person to be deemed a cousin was a man with hydrocephalus. He was not autistic, but many of his experiences with hydrocephalus were similar to the experiences of autistic people involved with Autism Network International.

People who are anti-self diagnosis tend to be so because they are afraid that people can just claim to have a certain condition and then invade spaces meant for those people as well as speak over people with an actual diagnosis. I personally have never witnessed someone deliberately pretending to be autistic in order to accomplish this. It is entirely possible that these people exist, but if they do, then they aren’t in significant enough numbers to really make a critical mass. This may be an issue with other brain based disabilities, but I am not as familiar with those spaces if it’s an actual issue there. I will say that the hysterics I’ve heard about people self-diagnosing themselves on Tik Tok are probably way over exaggerated and I don’t think it’s that much of an issue in the real world outside of the app. People self-diagnose before getting an official diagnosis. This is a totally normal and reasonable thing to do. Another thing I have not witnessed, that many anti-self diagnosis people are afraid of, is people self-diagnosing and then turning out to be wrong. Could this happen? Absolutely. But even then, I wouldn’t be so quick as to make them walk the plank. Being anti-self diagnosis is an exclusionary attitude, and seems to be more based on fear than being based on much actual evidence.

The reason many who are pro-self diagnosis are for it is because of the many barriers that exist to getting an official diagnosis in the first place. They are very costly, and the assessments made for said diagnoses are culturally biased and based on an improper understanding of the disability because the majority of people who design these tests lack lived experience. People of color and people assigned female at birth tend to not be diagnosed until later in life. These are things some anti-self DX folks will acknowledge, but they will still hold fast that self-diagnosis is invalid. I’ve heard the suggestion that someone should say “I think I’m autistic” instead of saying they are self-diagnosed. The thing is, there is literally zero difference between those two things. It’s being overly pedantic for the sake of exclusion. A diagnosis in and of itself isn’t even a privilege. It can lead to further discrimination by professionals and service providers. An early diagnosis can lead to a childhood full of condescending and possibly even violent treatment in early interventions and special education, as well as from peers. So paradoxically, an official diagnosis can be both a privilege and not a privilege.

Another thing I’ve seen anti-self DX people do is weigh the opinions of people later diagnosed with less authenticity than those who were early diagnosed. Why should it matter when someone gets a diagnosis? It almost feels like they’re moving the goalposts. Yes, it’s true that people later diagnosed often speak over people who received a childhood diagnosis, who actually have experience with the likes of ABA and special ed. However, there is a very unique set of challenges that comes from going through a significant portion of your life without knowing something so vital about understanding yourself that cannot be ignored. It’s somewhat similar to the dichotomy between being born with a disability and acquired disability. They are two separate experiences for sure, but there is also plenty of overlap to the point where weighing one experience as more valid than the other really doesn’t make sense.There are also people who did get a diagnosis, but were never told by their caregivers. There is some level of ableism faced by people in each instance, so why gatekeep so hard? I can think of several reasons, but the main reason to me is because they want to keep finding ways of telling themselves that the opinions of people they disagree with have something to do with them being illegitimate, and not because they actually may have the agency to come to a different conclusion about something than they have. They’re putting other people down and attacking their character to make themselves feel better. Another word for that is bullying.

So this brings me back around to cousins. If someone is a “cousin” to an autistic person, or someone with Cerebral Palsy, for example, there’s enough shared experience despite not having the same disability that it really doesn’t matter who’s really one thing or another. As Mel talked about, it can easily be used to further gatekeep, though given the inherently friendly and inclusionary nature of it, that should not be the case. Diagnostic criteria and labels are constantly changing, too. So even with that, the idea of cousins stands strong. It means that if you have similar enough experience with a group of people to relate to them on a deep level, then you are invited to the table.

I hate having autism because I have to do everything perfectly. Otherwise, my rights get taken away! Autism parents are a special kind of evil. If you don’t do everything perfectly on the first try, even if it’s something you have zero experience with, you’re never allowed to do it again and get treated like a toddler as a result.

A good example of this is how I was removed from public school as a 16-year-old because I got a C in one fucking class. I aced everything else but because I messed up that one class and got harassed over and over again by one particular guy and his stupid friends, my mother decided that I was too autistic to be successful in public school.

Instead, she placed me in a private pseudo-school for autistic people. It was made by a lady with no formal educational training who had an autistic son. They taught us well below our actual grade level. I had no contact with other children my age for the rest of my high school education because the vast majority of them were in middle or elementary school. The stuff they taught me was stuff I learned in middle school. I have a diploma, but it’s fucking bogus. I never learned more advanced, mathematics, or had the opportunity to take a foreign language class like I was supposed to.

I’m also not allowed to date anymore! My mother is one of those insufferable nerdy girls who brags about how she’s not like other girls and likes to put down “stupid women” which in her mind is anyone who isn’t her. The first relationship I was in was with a guy when I was between the ages of 20 and 22. I waited for a whole year before sleeping with him. I went on birth control, and I asked him to use a condom. However, he dumped me and my mom said it was because I chose to have premarital sex, and therefore cheapened myself.

In spite of my educational setbacks, after much pleading with my mother, I was allowed to apply to a college and got accepted. I did really well up through my junior year. 4.0 GPA every semester, no partying, no dating, no friends. I was a model student. At least until I got sick. I came down with pneumonia. That wouldn’t go away despite two rounds of antibiotics and got sent to the hospital. I had to withdraw. After that she decided I couldn’t handle college and wouldn’t let me go back. She refuses to pay for another year because I wasted her money by getting sick. Fuck me and fuck my stupid worthless immune system.

She told me that by choosing to sleep with him, I had exercised, poor judgment, and could not be trusted to consent. After that my access to birth control was removed, and every interaction I had with a man my age was closely monitored to ensure there was no chance of me ever being romantically involved with somebody else. She had me ruled as incapable of consent, even though what me and my boyfriend did was a mutual decision. I had to listen to that bitch tell me for weeks that I was worthless for a relationship now, and was nothing more than blown out street meat. I hate her, I hate him, but I hate myself more than both of them.

One of my old coworkers started stalking me. They figured out where I lived because they were friends with somebody who lived in my apartment complex. They didn’t start stalking me until months later. My mom says it’s my fault because I exchanged contact information with most of my coworkers in case we needed to contact each other to have someone cover or something. At the time, my coworker wasn’t stalking me. I didn’t know they were that kind of person but it’s still my fault and now I’m not allowed to work anymore.

I moved out and was happy for a little while with the life that I built for myself. Except then they switched management, and the new management changed the terms of my lease. Now I have to move. Now she’s having an intervention with the rest of my family to evaluate my intellectual competence because she wants to be placed under a conservatorship

And people wonder why I’m so perfectionistic. Why I am such a fucking control freak. I actually didn’t used to be like this until she started treating me differently after my diagnosis. I used to be normal until I had to earn my fucking humanity. When your autonomy, human rights, your very existence, hinges on absolute perfection, you will understand. This is why I need a back up plan for my back up for my back up plan. This is why I meticulously micromanage every single tiny thing I try to do. This is why I am so bossy whenever I have to work with other people. They might have room for error, but I don’t. Any mistakes they make, no matter how small, reflect poorly upon me. I am aware how a narcissistic that sounds, but that’s the reality of my situation. And people wonder why I hate myself so much

my turn to cry - thoughts on 3-1b

ok this has actually gotta be my favorite chapter cause holy shit so much stuff happened.

I played the Alice/kanna route and afterwards I watched a vod with the reko/shin route in which ranmaru and naomichi died before the banquet, so BIG SPOILER WARNING FOR BOTH ROUTES

Mafia Princess Sara??: Ok so first off, back in the beginning of 2020, I had a theory that Sara was a mafia heiress and that the death game was supposed to be something to “prepare” her. And that her memories were wiped or she was initially supposed to be kept blind to this whole thing (In 3-1a when everybody saw the consent form for the very first time everybody felt a sense of deja vu, except for Sara. Because why would they need her consent when she is the sole focus of the game and it’s all for her) This theory was mainly supplied by my confusion surrounding the hiring of Kai, cause why would mr Chidouin hire a former assassin to protect her?? How did he even know Kai??? But yeah, the whole thing with Shinobu Gokujo and deciding a new don through a death game just adds a lil more validity to this theory.

Sara’s real father: I also had a mini theory that Gashu Satou was her real father, but that was mostly cause of their hair color and how it would def make Sara’s hair color make more sense genetics-wise (but kai has black hair, so its most likely that his mother had black hair, which would also disprove this mini-theory but yk im not here to prove it just talk about it). And that Gashu knew of Mr. Chidouin and gave Sara to him, and it would also explain why mr Chidouin chose Kai of all people to look after her and why Kai could only watch her from a distance, in case she realized the truth that he was her brother/half-brother or something.

GREENBLINGS CANON AAAAAAAA: I love this, I love this so much oh my god. Now I can replay and cry after 2-2 cause nankidai hates us :’). I dont have an issue with this specifically, I’m just a bit bothered by how the whole thing went. There was some buildup yea, and the cg with kanna, kugie, and shin was amazing. And that lil bit about nice hallucinations made me tear up a bit. But, then everybody kinda just moved on? and idk this whole chapter was a fuckign roller coaster I could barely keep up.

Autistic Gin <3: I’m autistic myself and I have seen many characters who are autistic-coded or exhibit many signs of autism but have never been straight up confirmed (Ex: Vera Misham from Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney). And even then, these characters usually share similar personality traits like being aloof and reserved. So it’s nice to see that Gin is representing autism in a relatively realistic manner with his hyperfixations, vocal tics, and issues with socializing. Even after nearly dying like 17 times he’s still doing well and I genuinely wish for his survival and happiness.

Ranmaru’s death: Both of Ranmaru’s deaths, (if you or if you don’t fail the electricity absorption minigame) the death feels so... off? I was really attached to him as a character, yet his death didn’t impact as much as Joe’s or Nao’s did. During his Banquet death, one second he had his really cute smiling sprite but then whoops oh no guys weird drill screw thing kills him (again). I still can barely comprehend it because it all just happened so fast. Like no cg or anything. I was honestly kinda disappointed. The “delayed” one does a better job at his death scene, but again, it was wayyy too quick and completely dismissed as everybody just moves on to defeat Maple 2.0. I at least would’ve appreciated a better transition than Midori just saying “well anyways–”

Ranmaru’s extremely quick descent into madness in the shin route: I actually liked this idea of Ranmaru willing to go to such extremes for Sara. However, theres barely time for any of this to develop? Like again, everything just happens so fast??? I would've definitely liked if there were little hints around before the body discovery that ranmaru was gonna do something like this, just a little time for development would really be cool.

Mr. Policeman/Mr. Tazuna???: After I finished, I actually looked on the wiki to see if it said anything about his son that he mentioned and I found this:

The thing about Q-taro: I’m gonna say it now, I’ve liked Q-taro ever since the aftermath of 1-2, and Q-taro haters have added absolutely nothing to this fandom. Everybody saw him as a child-hater, I see him as a guy who’ll do anything to survive and succeed. I mean that wish is kinda what got him into the death game. And yeah he did try to leave that one time, but that’s what getting thrown into traumatic killing games does for you, most people don’t want to die, they want to live, no matter what it takes. We can’t all be the main character and choose to cooperate with everybody and be the “good” person in that situation. Even Sara has those extremely selfish moments and those intrusive thoughts of winning and leaving.

This whole thing should also be applied to Ranmaru. Ranmaru has gone through so much shit in such a brief amount of time, to the point where he was considering to/actually kill people to escape with the one person he trusted in this hellhole. In that situation, Sara’s kinda at fault here, cause without Joe she’s lost her sense of morality which resulted in her becoming selfish and well... honestly kinda toxic. This emotional manipulation is really what set Ranmaru off, however it was 100% his decision to fucking kill somebody and murder’s bad. Still love him though.

But back to Qtaro, I really enjoyed the extra substance given to him in this chapter, it’s nice to see the development from being selfish to feeling deep remorse to protecting the dolls of the first trial victims, most notably Mai. As he completely forgives her for stabbing him. The chapter did a great job at fueling my already intense love for Q-taro (and it actually convinced my best friend who claims to hate Q-taro with every bone of her body to like him too!) I also love the father-son dynamic between him and Gin. I find this relationship to be really important cause Gin’s father is an abusive alcoholic and Q-taro’s an orphan who’s never had a proper role-model in his life. So it’s beautiful that despite not having anybody there for him when he was younger he can still be a good figure for another child.

Predictions/hopes for the next part:

I just want to see whether Shin already knew about Kanna being his sister, and if he doesn’t I want a reveal. Right. Now.

#ActuallyAutistic vocabulary words and terms you should know!

There is a lot of confusion about & misuse of words related to autism and neurodivergence, so hopefully this list clears some things up :)

Neurodiversity Paradigm: a critical social theory that began in the autism rights movement, which states that neurological variation is a natural part of human diversity, and that people of all neurotypes should be valued and accommodated in society.

Neurotype: the way someone’s brain is wired, often analogous to a person’s diagnosis or lack thereof. For example, “autistic” is a neurotype, and so is “neurotypical.”

Neurodiverse: used to describe a group of people who have different neurotypes. For example, you could use the word “neurodiverse” to refer to a group of people that includes autistic people, neurotypical people, ADHD people, etc.

Neurodivergent: a person whose neurology/brain wiring is substantially different from the norm. This word is usually used in reference to people with developmental and learning disabilities. It includes autistic people and “Autistic Cousins.”

Neurotypical: a term that originated in the autistic community, which refers to a person with typical neurology; someone who does not have a developmental or learning disability; someone who is not autistic or an Autistic Cousin.

Autistic Cousin (AC): non-autistic neurodivergent people, who have conditions that often include some autistic traits. ACs include people with ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Tourette’s, Dyslexia, Schizoaffective Disorder, etc.

Allistic: any non-autistic person. This includes both neurotypical people, and non-autistic neurodivergent people (ACs).

Stimming: short for self-stimulatory behavior; repetitive motions or actions that autistic people frequently do to regulate sensory and emotional input. Examples include hand flapping, rocking, chewing, jumping, etc.

Special Interest (SI, SpIn): an autism-specific term that refers to an autistic person’s passionate interest in a certain topic or activity, something they are extremely invested in and knowledgeable about. These interests are much more intense than neurotypical people’s interests.

Hyperfixation: a term used to refer to a topic or activity that a neurodivergent person is currently extremely focused on, often causing us to forget to do certain basic necessities like bathe and eat. Autistic people, ADHD people, and some other neurodivergent people experience hyperfixations. Autistic people’s hyperfixations are often our special interests. This word can also be used as a synonym for hyperfocus, in the forms “hyperfixate” and “hyperfixating.”

Hyperfocus: the state of being extremely focused on a hyperfixation. This is the time blind mental state that neurodivergent people enter when we become fixated on a thought, topic, interest, or activity.

Meltdown: an emotional “explosion” in an autistic person, caused by sensory and/or emotional overstimulation. Meltdowns can involve crying, screaming, arguing, yelling, and aggressive and/or self-injurious behavior. Sometimes, autistic people can have more subtle versions of meltdowns that look more like panic attacks.

Shutdown: an emotional “implosion” in an autistic person, caused by sensory and/or emotional overstimulation. Shutdowns can involve crying, being unable to speak (“going nonverbal”), becoming stiff and immobile, and trying to hide.

Autistic Burnout: a long-term, chronic state of executive dysfunction and sensory/emotional dysregulation. Burnout can be caused when an autistic person is in an environment that doesn’t meet their needs. Symptoms of burnout include lethargy, frequent nonverbal episodes, deteriorating personal hygiene, and an inability to do basic tasks that the person was once able to do.

A$: a tongue in cheek acronym that stands for Autism Speaks, which is an organization that funds research into genetic causes and “treatments” for autism. They claim to represent autistic people, but there is only one autistic person on their board of directors, and they have repeatedly refused to listen to the needs of autistic people who reach out to them. They use fearmongering tactics to earn money, but almost none of that money goes towards directly helping autistic people and our families.

/s: this is short for /sarcasm, which is a common courtesy used between autistic people communicating online, to make it easier to understand when someone is being sarcastic. It is usually placed after the last word in a sentence. For example: wow, that lecture was sooo informative! /s

/j: this is short for /joke, which is also a common courtesy used between autistic people communicating online. It makes it easier to tell when someone is joking, as opposed to being serious. It’s used in the same way as /s.

Identity First Language: this is the term used to describe autistic people’s preference for being referred to as “autistic” rather than “people with autism.” This is because autism can’t be separated from who we are, and it’s not a bad thing, so we don’t want to be separated from it. We’re autistic, and proud!

ABA: stands for Applied Behavioral Analysis. It’s a branch of behavioral therapy that aims to change autistic people’s behavior through a system of regimented rewards and punishments. It was founded by the same man who pioneered gay conversion therapy, Ivar Lovaas. ABA is fundamentally coercive and abusive, even in its most watered-down forms. Many autistic people who have gone through ABA now have PTSD.

Masking: learned behavior that an autistic person employs to disguise the fact that they’re autistic; when an autistic person acts neurotypical in front of other people. Long-term masking can be harmful to an autistic person’s mental health.

Nonspeaking: this is a word used to refer to anyone who is either unable to, or very infrequently able to, use their mouth and voice box to produce speech that communicates their thoughts. Around 1/3 of all autistic people are nonspeaking.

AAC: short for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This term refers to any system or method of communication that is not sign language or spoken language. It may refer to the use of a tablet, keyboard, picture exchange system, or any number of other methods.

Aight, so the first one I have is that I think Rylander named him too and Violeta and Rafael were cool with it cuz they could just pronounce his name as César. I don't think they were amused by the Caesar salad joke when he told them but by then the damage was done.

The second, is that I headcanon him having both autism and adhd ((while I think Rex has adhd)) which I could probs make an entire post about at some point tbh.

Third, I headcanon him as ace.

Fourth, age wise when he made his first appearance, I would say he's around 23.

Fifth, BRUHH ever since that whole salmon and pineapple pizza thing with him and Rex that was never explained, I like to think that there's some kinda nanite in him that lets him somehow communicate with Rex but he doesn't know he has it or how to use it. Whether that was due to to the nanite event or his parents sticking one or two in him so he can keep an eye on Rex and vice versa in case anything bad happened, I dunno. Post series I think it would be funny if Rex accidentally activates it and they annoy the absolute heck out of each other afterwards. With Caesar it's more unintentional while with Rex it's more often than not completely intentional.

Sixth, I like to think Caesar often invites Holiday to work with him and the other scientists.

Seventh, I don't think Caesar can cook by traditional means at all. If he isn't using his own methods and inventions it is going to taste bad.

Eigth, he finally put up a bathroom in his lab after the series ended which became very useful during a vacation he, and Rex took so Abuela could meet Six, Holiday, and Bobo.

Ninth, he was not happy when he learned of the Doctor Fell stuff.

Tenth, there is at least one store or restaurant he and Rex are banned from after an accident that involved a small explosion.

This is a good ship actually. Very headcanon based. (their fucking photos are so different in size kill me)

General Oumaede Headcanons

Kokichi likes to just collapse onto Kaede's stomach and bury his face into her chest. It's not a kink thing (ace rights baby), he just enjoys the warmth and comfort of being so close to her.

In turn, she gets a lot of comfort from having her arms around him. She feels like she can protect him that way :)

They both have ADHD and autism and one of the ways it manifests is in poor emotional intelligence- so they work out a way to make sure to always tell each other when they need a break, when they need comfort, etc.

Kaede fidgets a lot, and she loves messing with Kokichi's hair! Combing it with her hands, making little braids without tying them off, she fusses with it a lot. In turn, she lets him play with her hands whenever he wants to.

They both carry stim toys for each other,,,, love is forgetting your fidget toy at home and your partner getting you one from their bag.

Fanny pack buddies. They have matching pins on them as well.

Kaede actually likes to help out with Kokichi's jokes and minor pranks, as long as they aren't mean (ie, the victim can't laugh when it's over). In turn, being with her has actually calmed him down a lot- he never really knew how much his words affected people.

Clasping hands a lot!!!! They do a lot of low-key PDA, and hand holding is one of the most constant ones. The others are quick pecks on the cheeks and resting their heads on each other.

Kokichi isn't the biggest fan of classical music but he'll drink three cups of espresso and pinch himself the whole way through one of her concerts if need be.

Kokichi is the jealous one in the relationship;; though a lot of guys do hit on Kaede, as she's a very pretty girl. He usually just goes up to them and insults them until they leave. She only allows it because they make her uncomfortable, though she makes sure to tell him when it's someone she knows!

They both hate cooking;;; they both find it boring and think they could be doing better things with their time. They buy a lot of 5-10 minute meals from Costco.

Honestly I don't see them as ever having kids, but I can see them being involved in their friends kids lives!! They just don't have the sex drive to build a kid, and even if they did neither of them are hyped about it, so they decided not to have any.

Ok first of all this is based on my own personal feelings and preferences. Not every autistic person is going to agree with this list. If you are autistic and you have things you wanna add on then feel free just don't try and start fights with me I will block you.

Things to avoid:

-No more super smart genius type autistics. We already have enough. No more.

- Hot take maybe, but no more white boys. We already have enough.

- Don't make them a horrible asshole with no feelings or no respect for other people's feelings.

- Don't make them overly self absorbed or extremely selfish or narcissistic.

- That being said, don't make them a perfect saint either who is always kind to everyone. We can be occassionally cruel or selfish. We do make mistakes and hurt people. The trick is making sure that it's a balence.

- If this sounds complicated and contradictory... well yeah. The human condition is complicated and we are people. (Shocking I know/s)

- Don't characterize them like a child if they're an adult or a teenager. Don't infantalize them.

- If you make them have low empathy, don't equate low empathy to no feelings and no compassion.

- No more science or math special interests. Too many!!! Or trains!!

- Don't have their personal character development or big moments happen in someone else's pov. Or if they do, you HAVE to write about how they feel about it at some point.

- Don't make them have a perfect memory I'm sick of that shit.

- Don't make them absolutely perfect at their special interest or know absolutely everything about it. We make mistakes sometimes.

- Don't describe them as special or gifted or blessed.

- If other characters say ableist shit about them, make sure the narrative clearly shows that it's wrong.

- Do not make the autistic character forgive someone for being ableist and immediately become friends with them.

- Do not use person first language, functioning labels, or the term aspergers.

- Do not give them a bad fashion sense. My flawlessly dressed autistic self is sick of this.

- Don't have them not understand any figures of speech or metaphors. This is overdone. Some autistic people are fine with most figures of speech once we know what it means and will even use them.

- DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT CONSULT AUTISM SPEAKS!

- Do not take advice from parents with autistic children.

- Don't have them using super fancy language. Sure some autistic people talk like that but not many in my experience.

Things to do:

- This one is crucial. In all my 21 years on this earth I have NEVER encountered a canon autistic character that was allowed to hold a grudge for a significant amount of time. LET US HOLD GRUDGES 2021!!!!

- Let us be angry! Especially if you are writing a female character!! And do not demonize her for her anger.

- Let us do adult things if you are writing an adult character. Or teenage things if you are writing a teenage character. This involves swearing, drinking, dressing proactively, driving or engaging in sexual relationships and having sexual feelings. Not every adult needs to do these things to be an adult of course, but we are usually gate kept from doing these things because we are infantalized.

- Ace and Aro autistics absolutely do exist! However autistic people are usually stereotyped as not having "those kinds of feelings" so if you really want to make them aro or ace or both, really examine why.

- If you do make them ace please don't make them a "sweet innocent baby who doesn't even know what sex is"

-Just please don't fall into bad stereotypes for ace and aro characters.

- Give them diverse special interests like random movies or tv shows. We tend to like scifi and fantasy a lot. But that's not a given.

- Make them artsy or give them an interest in music. Maybe make them a singer or have them play in a band?

- Do make them a fan of rock or alternative or indie music!!! I never see that! Or even heavy metal!

- Preferably make them queer/LGBTQ we tend to not be straight especially if you're afab.

- Most of us are nonbinary, I would suggest making your autistic character nonbinary but you don't have to.

- Have them be more sensory seeking then sensory avoidant

- Have them be a motion stimmer or an auditory stimmer (have them stim by blasting music or dancing or jumping up and down, spinning around in circles, spinning on a rolling chair etc.)

- Give them an interest in fashion or makeup (not neccesarily a special interest.)

- Let them have other interests besides a special interest. We have other things we like, they just aren't as importent to us.

- Have them be stubborn but understand why and make sure the readers/audience understands.

- WRITE THEIR POV!!!!

- Write them having shutdowns instead of meltdowns.

- Don't have them constantly compromising on shit or compromising easily.

- Write them having a completed relationship with morality and "goodness."

- If they aren't aro, write them feeling very intense romantic love that consumes and overwhelmed them.

- Have them feeling very intense emotions in general.

- Have them showing love in autistic ways, ie bringing people gifts and quoting shit, parallel play etc.)

-If they are not ace or ace but not sex repulsed, if they are an adult, and you are comfortable writing it have them be hypersexual and also preferably kinky. This is actually really common in my experience.

- Have them show frustration at having to live in a neurotypical, ableist world that wasn't made for them.

- Have them struggle with communicating their feelings and finding the right words to describe their feelings.

- Have them use quotes to describe their feelings or song lyrics.

- Let them be entitled to their space and their freedom.

- Give them trust issues. Look I don't want to be defined by trauma any more then the next autistic person, but it's kind of where we're at you know?

- Have them be a little paranoid about whether or not people actually like them.

- Let them have stuffies and stim toys and chewies. They don't have to be store bought they can be home made.

- Have them be hyper-empathetic. I've never seen an autistic hyper-empathetic character before.

- Have them be good with cats.

- Have them be a good dancer/enjoy dancing.

- Have them do facial stims like scrunching up their face or twitching their nose.

- Have them lose speech during a meltdown or a shutdown and have to write things down or use a communication device for awhile.

- Have them be a bad student or struggle with school.

- Have them hate math please I will love you forever!!!!

- Have them engage in echolalia (when you hear something that sticks out to you and you repeat it back over and over again)

- Make them sarcastic! Lots of autistic people are actually really sarcastic.

- Have them struggle with executive dysfunction.

- Show them showing signs of autistic happiness!! Like happy stimming. When I get really excited I tend to shreak and jump up and down or I flap my hands or bang them against a nearby table.

- Allow them to fuck up.

- In terms of grief, have them have very emotionally delayed reactions to grief. I reccomend research autistic peoples experiences with loss specifically if you are going to make this part of the story.

- Have them experience a lot of emotional delays where things don't hit them right away.

- Have them disassociate in traumatic situations.

- Make sure in general you understand their motivations as you're writing them. Don't just have them do things because "weird quirky autistic character!"

- Give them autistic friends and let them interact with the community!

I know I'm probably forgetting stuff, but this is all I can think if for now. If you have any questions about anything or any of the points I made let me know.

Intro Post!

Hello! Thanks for stopping by. My name is Kit. I’m not naturally a blogger so this feels weird to me but I’m just going to type and see where I end up!

This blog is about me and my relationship with neuroqueerness. I’m an autistic ADHDer in my 30s, who has identified as asexual (aegosexual) for about three years and aromantic (aegoromantic) for one. I am agenderfluid and use xe/xem/xyr pronouns. I am physically disabled. This blog is going to be about all of these things.

Random things to know about me: I love dogs and cats. I enjoy baking. Pancakes are my favourite food! I’ve been in multiple serious relationships. My favourite show is the Expanse. I have bad social anxiety even online. I am not good at keeping houseplants alive. I think dinosaurs rock.

“Neuroqueer” is a word I started to think about last year, when I realised that my neurodivergence affected so many aspects of my identity and it was impossible to separate out the two. Sensory processing differences play a big part in how I express my gender, how I experience intimacy, and what I need my life to look like. How I relate to people and how I communicate affects the relationships I have and the level of space I need, the fact that I prefer to be non-partnered and don’t get lonely. My confusion over the concepts and rules of gender and relationships could also be due to my autism.

Before I started using the word neuroqueer to refer to myself I googled it to see if other people had defined it at all. I found an amazing theory that spoke to everything I was thinking and wanted to achieve. You can find Nick Walker’s article on being neuroqueer at https://www.neuroqueer.com/neuroqueer-an-introduction/ but I want to quote four of the ways she gives to neuroqueer yourself here:

1. Being both neurodivergent and queer, with some degree of conscious awareness and/or active exploration around how these two aspects of one’s being entwine and interact

2. Embodying and expressing one’s neurodivergence in ways that also queer one’s performance of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and/or other aspects of one’s identity.

3. Engaging in practices intended to undo and subvert one’s own cultural conditioning and one’s ingrained habits of neuronormative and heteronormative performance, with the aim of reclaiming one’s capacity to give more full expression to one’s uniquely weird potentials and inclinations.

4. Engaging in the queering of one’s own neurocognitive processes (and one’s outward embodiment and expression of those processes) by intentionally altering them in ways that create significant and lasting increase in one’s divergence from prevailing cultural standards of neuronormativity and heteronormativity.

So I am now working to be more aware of my neurodivergence and my queerness, to undo the conditioning I’ve experienced in my life so far and be more outwardly and expressively queer and ND.

Part of that also involves educating myself on queer theory, intersectionality, crip theory, critical race theory, inclusive feminism and gender theory and so on. You might find some of that stuff on this blog sometimes as I read about it. This is not going to be a discourse blog though and I won’t be deliberately sharing argument chains, offensive or very triggering stuff.

If you’re rude or aphobic I will not engage, you will just get blocked and any comments will be deleted. I’m also not going to enter into discussion on the use of the word “queer”. You don’t have to use it for yourself and I will try to always make it clear that I am talking specifically about people who identify as queer when I use it to refer to others, but it is my word and I’m keeping it.

I want to finish with a few definitions for anyone who needs them...

These are my understandings and not written in stone

Asexual: part of the asexual spectrum, asexuals (aces) tend to have little to no sexual attraction to anyone, or experience low to absent interest in sexual activity. However, whether or not an asexual person chooses to have sex (and whether they enjoy sex either for the physical sensation or the bonding aspect) is individual and should not be assumed.

Aegosexual: part of the asexual spectrum, aegosexuals also often have little or no desire to take part in sexual activities with other people; however, they may have sexual fantasies and view, read or listen to sexual content which can arouse them. Aegosexuals usually feel a disconnect between themselves and the situation that arouses them and do not want the situations to happen to them in real life, and might only fantasise about other (often fictional or very out of reach) people rather than anything involving themselves.

Aromantic: part of the aromantic spectrum, aromantics (aros) tend to have little to no romantic attraction to anyone, or experience low to absent interest in romantic activity such as relationships, dates, or romantic gestures like the Western traditions of giving flowers to potential romantic partners. Aromantic people might or might not choose to be in romantic relationships because action and attraction are different things, and aromantic people may enjoy the close bond and comfort of a romantic relationship with someone they care for platonically, queerplatonically etc who would like to date them romantically, or they might prefer not to be in a romantic relationship.

Aegoromantic: part of the aromantic spectrum, aegoromantics also often have little or no desire to take part in romantic activities; however, they often have romantic fantasies and enjoy the idea of romance, they simply do not like the concepts applied to them. Aegoromantics often enjoy fantasising about, reading and viewing romance but often have no desire to experience romantic relationships themselves or do not feel romantic attraction to people in their everyday lives.

Agenderfluid: A person who is genderfluid (has different gender identities at varying times) but whose central gender that is returned to is agender (no gender, unknown gender or neutral gender). Agenderfluid can fall under the nonbinary and transgender umbrellas.

Neurodivergent (ND): a person whose brain (and nervous system) differs from the standard idea of a “typical mind” that their society has created. Kassiane Asasumasu, the creator of the term has been very clear that “neurodivergent” is a very broad term and refers to anyone who diverges from the majority of minds. Examples of neurodivergence include depression, dyscalculia, PTSD, epilepsy, autism, DID, bipolar, aphantasia, dyslexia, brain injury, personality disorders, anxiety, schizophrenia, cerebral palsy, OCD, ADHD and many others.

Queer: Often used as an identity by people who are not heterosexual, not heteroromantic and/or not cisgender. Queer activism opposes trying to appear “normal” and prefers to celebrate diversity, while queer theory often talks about questioning identity and the normative rules of the world that affect our lives and keep us pigeonholed and oppressed.

Non-partnering: Someone who isn’t looking to form significant and/or committed partnerships (e.g. romantic, queerplatonic) with others.
