I need you
(Ghost x Soap)
After a mission gone wrong, Soap is comforted by Ghost. He is in pain that only Ghost's touch can make better.
Chapter 34 of Don't Let Me Go on a03.
With confirmation that the mission was over and not needing to hear anymore, Soap made a quick exit and headed to one of the bedrooms, feeling that Ghost was behind him the whole time. He just felt like he needed to get out of there.
Soap pushed open the bedroom door and stepped inside with Ghost closing it behind him. He turned around to face Ghost who immediately opened his arms and wrapped them around Soap. Finally the two of them getting to be alone, Soap was able to let out a sigh of relief as if he had been holding his breath the whole time. He wrapped his arms around Ghost tightly and turned his head to bury it into Ghost’s neck.
For a brief moment, Soap let all his pain and worries melt away with the warmth of the hug. He focused on the steady rhythm of Ghost’s breathing and heartbeat. Ghost slowly traced lazy shapes into Soap’s back with his fingers. It felt so sweet that Soap wanted to immortalize those lines forever.
“It’s not your fault,” Ghost murmured against the top of Soap’s head.
“I know…” Soap said quietly, although he could feel the lack of conviction.
“Listen to me. It’s not your fault.”
Soap didn’t reply.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Ghost asked.
“Not really…” he mumbled.
“…do you want to lie in bed?”
Soap hummed. “Yeah, that’d be nice.”
The two of them leisurely made their way to the bed and tumbled onto the mattress, tangled in each other’s long limbs. Ghost shimmied backwards until his back was up against the headboard and he reached out to pull Soap tight to his body. Soap curled up against his side and rested his head on Ghost’s chest.
They spent the passing time in silence, Ghost continuing to trace his hand up and down Soap’s back while Soap absentmindedly played with Ghost’s dog tag by looping and unlooping it around his finger. Soap focused on hearing the little things: the occasional bird chirping outside the window, an old car accelerating down the road, the creaking floorboards of the house, the blanket shifting underneath them, the quiet murmuring coming from the other room.
It felt peaceful, laying like this together. In moments like these, time never quite felt linear. It was fickle and winding, looping or stopping however it wished. Nevertheless, Ghost’s body always made him feel grounded.
After an unknown amount of time, Ghost lightly cleared his throat to speak.
“So…” he started casually. “You played the trombone?”
Soap smiled faintly. “If by ‘played’ you mean tried to hit my friend on the back of the head every class without getting caught by the teacher, then yeah… I played.”
“Can’t say I’m surprised you were a class nuisance.”
“I was never one for staying still.”
“You’re staying pretty still right now.”
“That’s because it’s you…”
Soap could feel Ghost physically take in those words. His gaze felt so hot and intense that Soap kept focusing on twirling the chain of Ghost’s dog tag around his finger. Although he was miles and miles away from Scotland, he felt like he was already home.
“You ever play any instruments?” Soap asked, suddenly feeling the urge to fill the silence with something.
Soap felt Ghost shake his head. “Just a couple songs on the piano.”
“That’s still an instrument,”
“I’m not any good.”
“I don’t care,” Soap said longingly. “Play for me one of these days?”
“Okay…” Ghost whispered. “Yeah…” After a pause, “You’re a good person, Johnny.”
“I know,” Soap said, feeling like that’s how he was supposed to reply.
“You have a kind heart,” Ghost continued.
“I know.”
“And you’re not a failure.”
“I know.”
Ghost paused for a second again as Soap could feel him getting slightly annoyed.
“You can say something other than ‘I know.’”
“I know,” Soap said smiling, unable to help himself. Laughter threatened to bubble out of his chest.
“Now you’re taking the piss…”
“Maybe,” he said teasingly.
Ghost let out a sigh and shook his head in exasperation.
“You are quite the… handful,” Ghost said with annoyed affection.
“A handful?!” Soap cried out quietly in fake indignation. “I am not. Maybe it’s not me. Maybe you’re the one who’s too serious all the time. You need to let go more.”
“Did I not just tell you an absolutely hilarious joke earlier?”
“Did I laugh?”
“I know you wanted to.”
“Right… The imminent threat of danger was the only reason I didn’t laugh…”
“I’m glad we agree on that.”
Soap pushed himself up so he could look Ghost in the face. There was a mischievous twinkle in his eye as he watched Soap in amusement. God, those eyes were so pretty.
Soap failed to suppress a smile as he shook his head. He raised his hand and cupped the side of Ghost’s face.
“You’re such a prick,” Soap said affectionately with a dumb smile plastered over his face. Ghost’s eyes fully crinkled into a smile.
“Only for you,” Ghost replied.
“Jesus Christ… just kiss me already.”
Ghost accepted the invitation without hesitation, pulling his mask up and over his mouth and leaning forward to press their lips together. It was soft and sweet and lazy all at once. Soap happily leaned into the kiss and felt his heart longingly squeeze with contentment.
