The あいうえお Game
Hello! I wanted to share with you a game that I made up that I like to use to practice Japanese vocabulary in my spare time (i.e. when I'm bored and don't have access to a phone). This game works well when you don't have time to do formal studying but want to challenge yourself for a short time anyways.
Tumblr media
How to Play?
The general idea of the game is to come up with a word for each syllable of the Japanese alphabet/syllabary (あいうえお, etc.).
Step 1: Pick a Theme
You can pick any theme that you'd like, but I find that broader themes are easier to come up with words for than more specific themes.
Some of my favorite themes include:
Animals
Food
First Names
Last Names
Sports
You could also do verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc. Or, you can play anything goes!
Step 2: Think of as Many Words as Possible
Now, you just go through the syllabary in given (alphabetical?) order in your head and come up with a word that matches your theme starting with each syllable. Examples below!
Animals: あ=ありくい、い=イルカ、う=うさぎ、など
Food: あ=あんぱん、い=いも、う=うどん、など
First Names: あ=あいり、い=いえやす、う=うさこ、など
Last Names: あ=ありま、い=いとう、う=うえだ、など
Sports: あ=アイスホッケー、い=イースポーツ、う=ウィルチェアーラグビー、など
*など=etc.
Step 3: If You Get Stuck, Skip It!
If you get stuck on a syllable and can't think of anything, skip it! You can either come back to it look up a word later, or you can just forgive yourself for not having a vocabulary word to insert there. When I get stuck I usually skip it and try to keep my momentum going. The nice part about this game is that there is no score and no one is judging you!
And that's it! That's how to play the あいうえお game. I enjoy it because it's simple and it's portable and it's a great way to practice vocabulary. 皆さん楽しんでね!

This is THE single largest milestone in my entire 7 year game programming career.
I don't think I've ever gone over my history with moving platforms before, but basically. Back in my sophomore year of highschool I had a programming class! I hadn't chosen to take it, but the class I wanted got cut so I got this instead. And I already knew how to program, and the teacher was chill so I was like "can I like just work on whatever?" and she said sure. The rest of the class was doing an online html+css class.
Anyway I was like "yo I have an entire class period to program! I am gonna make a game!" That game was the first version of ThreeEye, and it's scope was very small. My plan was some like 8 levels, and the only mechanics were movement, spikes, and moving platforms. Spikes were extremely easy.
But there are no words for the difficulties I faced trying to impliment moving platforms.
I spent... Every. Single. Class period.
For. A. Semester.
Trying get them working.
I tried making the game in Gamemaker and Godot.
In Gamemaker I had a strange issue with the player sorta hovering above the platform, instead of cleanly moving on top of it. And also sinking a pixel inside of the platform when moving up. I never fixed it.
I then tried Godot, and I continued to struggle.
Oh I struggled, I struggled and struggled and struggled.
And was it worth it? No.
I found the bug, and it was caused by my refusal to actually read documentation and instead follow tutorials. The tutorial I was reading had the arguments for a 'move_and_slide_with_snap` function out of order.
So I fixed the bug.
And immediately found another bug that was even more dramatic and hard to debug.
And I quit.
I quit game dev for 2 years, and never looked back. At that point almost all I had done was watch tutorials and ineffectively debug. And I was so hyper focused on fixing this ONE issue that I never grew. I burnt out and I declared that programming wasn't for me.
2 years later I discovered a video of someone making a game without a game engine, but in C. And I thought it looked fun. So I decided that I would try programming again, but I wouldn't focus on trying to FINISH something. I would program as a hobby, and try to enjoy the act itself.
And I got that spark back, and now, 2 and a half years later. I solved moving platforms with the following 2 lines of code.
Tumblr media
And it's not these lines specifically, my skills as a programmer and EVERYTHING surrounding these two lines is what brought me here. My code structure was good enough, such that actually implementing the moving platforms took 5 minutes. I copy and pasted some code, cut some stuff out, and added the above lines.
I know I am technically a better programmer than when I first faced this challenge, but after having actually beat it. I feel like I have made it further than I ever had before.
Also that means this game is also further along in progress then anything else I've made before.
Yippie!

Top 5 study methods plz
oooh, this is a good one, i'll do my best to answer well!
Top 5 Study Methods (especially for busy people)
📝 Everything is a List
class schedules
due dates
assignments, projects, exams
all the follow-up emails you need to send to your group members and supervisor and — 💀
at least once a week:
review and organize your masterlist of tasks
budget select items into your schedule
break down list items into the tiniest possible tasks that can be accomplished even in the smallest pocket of time in your most sleep-deprived state
📖 How to Paraphrase — Make Analogies In Your Notes💡
i've never really understood how to paraphrase the textbook in my notes quickly in a way that actually helps me retain the information until i learned this trick from @megumi-fm ❤️
now i make kpop references in my notes sometimes to help me remember relationships between concepts ☺️ (you can also be normal and make analogies between other course materials or not-brain-rot topics 😅)
using this method, i basically never need to review my notes prior to the weekly assessments and when it comes time to review for finals, the analogies are like shortcuts that speed up the revision process so much!
🤷‍♀️ if you need it, you'll remember it
sometimes active recall study methods are important, but other times, you just need to pass a multiple choice exam and it pays to know the difference and study differently to make the most of your time!!
for certain courses, i just read my notes, then take the test with the attitude of if it's important, i'll remember it when the time comes 😌
to be honest, for most things in life, you don't need to recall things out of nowhere, it will pretty much always be in context. so it comes down to having your priorities sorted and acting accordingly to maximize your impact (i.e. 80/20 rule)
💃 How to Focus — Mix It Up
try different techniques from time to time! sometimes certain methods aren't sustainable or get boring in the long-term, but they can be good in the short-term for specific situations to give yourself a quick boost of productivity 💪
🍅 pomodoro — good for when you can't seem to focus for a long time, bad for when you're trying to get into a flow-state
⏰ time-blocking — good for budgeting lots of things into your schedule, bad for your overall sanity when planning on a regular basis
⏪ reverse pomodoro (like a stopwatch game to see how long you can focus for) — has the positive effects of pomodoro without the negative effects, but you can only compete against yourself for so long before it gets kinda boring
👯‍♀️ body-doubling (study with a video or friend) — quality depends on the quality of your video/self-discipline or the discipline of your friend
🏃‍♀️ study while moving lightly (i.e. doing mindless chores or working out) — good for when you feel restless, bad for when your focus is already all over the place
🔁 sometimes the best action is inaction
resetting yourself between subjects, after an evaluation, or even just after a long lecture is so important! it doesn't need to take long either!
have a quick conversation with a friend
go for a quick walk
take a shower
eat something
listen to a favorite song
journal
hope this helps, lovely! 💞

Language Learners Speaking Ask Game
I remember years ago, I used to come across people's audio posts all the time on langblr. People would record themselves speaking in their target languages and post it, and I thought it was a really nice aspect of the community. Since, I don't see these kinds of posts, anymore, I thought it would be fun to encourage a resurgence of this by creating a little ask game!
These questions are meant to be answered aloud and in your target language, but do as you wish!
Introduce yourself!
Why did you start learning your target language?
Do you have a favorite dialect in your TL?
What's your favorite tongue twister in your TL?
Are there any celebrities who speak your TL whose voice you really like?
What is your favorite TL song to sing along to?
Are there any songs in your TL that you know all the lyrics to? Are there any songs you’d like to learn all the lyrics to?
Do you take any classes in your TL or do you have study buddies with the same TL?
Congratulations, you get to live where your TL is spoken! Ideally, where would you live (ie. city)?
Where is your favorite place to study languages?
What are go-to snacks for studying?
What's your favorite book you've read in your TL?
What's your favorite show/movie you've watched in your TL?
Have you ever had a conversation in your TL with a native speaker? How'd it go?
Who is your favorite TL musical artist and what do you like about their music?
Has knowing your TL ever helped you out in a pinch?
Do you listen to any podcasts in your TL?
What kinds of YouTube videos do you watch in your TL and does that differ from the kinds of videos you watch in your primary language?
Do you have any pet phrases/words (words or phrases you say often) in your TL?
Are there any phrases in your TL vocabulary that you picked up or say because of something you've read or watched?

After language hopping 4 times in a week I have come to learn that no matter how annoying and finicky C might be, it's not nearly as annoying and finicky as every other language ever made.

this week consisted of the last seminary of the semester, game night with some friends and attempting to make granola
I really need to finish writing the application for a grant for my research in the next few days and figure out how to nicely get out of a project I agreed to previously
I keep having so much to do and it not enough energy - guess that's the next four years for me

Newcomer
In my language learning journey, which started with French long ago, I've found myself, like many others, being drawn to learning through gamification. People love Duolingo for this reason and I've used it for years myself. I did some reading up on it though and decided to try Babbel this time around.
ANYWAY, in my information superhighway travels, I came across Newcomer! It's an RPG that has translation and vocab building aspects. It unlocks words and phrases as you level up. You have a phrasebook for quick reference and a whole host of questions and statements to click through to interact with the NPCs. It's not like "game of the year" but it is entertaining enough to hold my attention. I don't even typically like RPGs so...give it a shot. It's $10 on Steam.
Bravo.
