How to Survive a Haunting now launched on Kickstarter! Running 3/2/23 to 3/31/23!!
Tumblr media
ID in Alt
In How to Survive a Haunting, you play as Stranger, an entity plagued by ghosts who try to possess you, and take over your home and your life. Luckily, you have come across a mysterious old journal, written by a man only referred to as The Journalkeeper. He has spent his life studying ghosts, and made it his mission to record everything he knew about how to defend yourself from them, and how to tame them
On the journey to taming your ghosts, you will represent your accomplishments through tokens, keep a magical deck of cards that help you ward off unearthly possessions, and log your adventure in a journal. The Journalkeeper will walk you through each stage of this process, and teach you how to customize the game to fit your specific needs
Haunting is a gamified mental health aid, designed to help people learn more about how their body works, adopt a challenge mindset, and achieve post-traumatic growth. It is designed with a light horror aesthetic (though no actual scares in the game) to meet people in the mental space that they’re at, and not make light of extremely difficult circumstances. It is geared towards the recovery of those with trauma and (c)PTSD

Haunting was inspired by my own journey of recovery and exploration with gamification and tabletop roleplaying games as I struggled for years with PTSD, dysphoria, mental health issues, and more. Games were a safe space for me, and allowed me to grow and heal more than almost anything else. With games, I was able to put the power of recover into my own hands, go at my own pace, and focus on what was important to me
I wanted to create Haunting to help all the people who may find traditional therapy unhelpful, intimidating, inaccessible, or unsafe. Or for others who find therapy helpful but need more structure and guidance outside of sessions. Haunting explores many different ways to help your brain and your body, explains the science and psychology behind its advice in cited research, and never breaks character as a helpful old man giving advice on ghosts
It is geared entirely around building self-efficacy, building resilience, and achieving post-traumatic growth
The funding goal is $3500. This original goal funds for consultant Hayley Twyman Brack, a therapist and avid gamer, to go over the game and make sure everything is cited from the latest peer-reviewed research, and make sure all the psychology advice is up to date on the latest therapeutic practices
I am pulling the knowledge in this game both from my own recovery journey, and my last two years as a social worker working with a large variety of clients with disability and mental health challenges
If we can reach a little further than our original goal, the game will be fully illustrated by wonderful artist Vicky @prose-n-scripts
Please check out the Kickstarter page to learn more and spread the word to anyone who may be interested! I believe in the power of the TTRPG community to make this happen! Thank you everyone!!

"I was index worthy!" I don't know why this meant so much. I mean, I was shocked that something I said ended up in the book at all, but for enough words to have made it in for me to be mentioned on multiple pages. Gobsmacked!
Failure may tell us that something went wrong and that we need to try something else, but Rob Hatch, a long-time business coach, explores using our past successes to help us with the how to move forward part. We often already have the answer to what will work, because we have done it before and just don't realize it.
If you want to check it out, here's a linky thing to take you there.

I gamify word counts.
Here, have my custom template that I actually use. Because gatekeeping resources is wack.
I sometimes write up to 4,000 words a day for my day job, and then I’ll sit down in the evening and write more.
I'm able to make this work (for me, just for me, most of the time) because I've discovered that I can trigger dopamine hits with visual cues like colors and a progress chart.
So I made this word count tracker.
It's nothing too fancy, but it's got pretty, live-updating colors, a chart that tracks my progress, I can set a goal if I have one. I keep one of these in almost every writing project folder.
It works really well for me, and it helps me when I'm feeling freaked out by a word count or a blank page.
Just Input your word count goal and your word count by day. That’s it. It’ll track your progress, color it in by weight (so satisfying), and you’ll see the graph get closer and closer to your goal.

Gamification is:
spending $15 and all weekend chasing after dragons, then at 10PM on Sunday night going "oh look I'm only 3km away from the 50km weekly reward, that would only take me like an extra hour?"

You know what?
Fuck it.
Make your life into an RPG. It's more fun that way.
Chores? Nope, side-quests.
Learning? Nope, grinding/levelling.
Bosses? Well. Bosses.

Sorry for the late update, but here's an update post on my January spreads that I've been using in my planner! All hand drawn by me and inspired by one of my favorite video games, Ark Survival Ascended.

Though I didn't do super well on my habits this month so far, there's always room for improvement (including actually filling in the boxes when I do them). January has been a curve ball so far with my uni courses changing and my work schedules changing as well so I've been struggling a bit 😅😅
But, I've learned what I need to tweak (my habits are #1) and to actually create routines that are sustainable for me and a chaoticly busy life. I have a D&D campaign that is currently wrapping up Adventure 1 of 3 in the next two months, starting my husband's homebrew D&D adventure afterwards, and gearing up to finish my Bachelors this year while starting to apply for Masters Grad programs! Yay me!
My asks are open if anyone wants to ask away! Any and all comments are appreciated!

WEEKLY STATUS REPORT: WHAT A WEEK!
So much has happened at Habitica this past week, and we want to be sure you didn't miss a thing now that it's the Spring Fling!
First, we had great fun with some of Habitica's pets. The Cuddle Buddies Pet Quest Bundle hit the Quest Shop, allowing you to get the Bunny, Ferret, and the Guinea Pig quests all for only 7 gems. And be sure to stock up now, because the Guinea Pig is part of our new Rodent Ruler achievement badge (along with Rats and Squirrels).
Later in the week, the Spring Fling sprung in Habit City, bringing with it brand new limited edition outfits: Fluorite Warrior, Hibiscus Mage, Bluebird Healer, and Melting Snow Rogue. Previous outfits and goodies are also available in the Seasonal Shop in case you missed any. And just in case you didn't get enough of pets earlier, three magic hatching potions just returned to the Market: Celestial, Rainbow, and Shimmer.
After all this, you might expect us to take a week off, but we can't do that! There are a few surprises left before the month ends. Keep an eye on this space!

Hey, guys! I made a Notion template for daily quests to gamify your routine a little bit.
So if you use Notion and like checking on your habits, check it out here!
New pages for each day creates automatically.
And if you'll like using it consider donating me on Boosty. It's not necessarily but I'll be happy if you will! 💙

A is for Abecedarian
The rabbit hole I spent too much time in today was exploring variations of abecedarian and how the idea might play into upcoming workshops and content. For those who are also today years old learning the word, it has to do with arranging things alphabetically. I learned of it while exploring a set of cards by Bonnie Smith Whitehouse called Kickstart Creativity: 50 Prompted Cards to Spark Inspiration. It is definitely a more cerebral and higher-vocabulary approach to sparking creativity. Here's a link if you want to learn more about it.
Aside from some religious texts, it is found at times in poetry and one of the examples I found quite charming was Catherine Pierce's Abecedarian for the Dangerous Animals. In it each line of the poem starts with the letter of the alphabet succeeding the previous line. In other examples, it is the first word of a stanza or all lines in a stanza start with one letter before moving onto the next.
I love the mix of language and playful rules in text. I have had a long-standing love affair with haiku for its structured creativity. But I digress. As I do. Because rabbit holes are largely about exploring and finding new connections and this one is yielding a treasure trove of ideas for activities to add to my workshops.
Aside from trying you hand at creating an abecedarian poem, you could also quickly brainstorm topics for 6 months of blog content by simply writing all of the letters of the alphabet down a sheet of paper (or typing them on a screen, or whatever) and then coming up with words that apply to your topic that start with each letter. Do it twice and you are done for the year.
