Hey so this thought has been on my mind for like ages and I think that you'd be able to write a headcanon about it in a wonderful way, so I'm presenting this idea to you hehe ( I love ur blog so so so much btw!)
So let's say that whatever miracles of seven happened, that Yuu overblots. Being constantly pushed around by other students by being magicless, solving the idiot trio's problems, trying to survive overblots and dealing with Crowley's neglectful ass cheeks sure is not easy. With all the piled and bottled up negative emotions, Yuu like the previous boys, overblots. Yuu wasn't that hard to defeat cuz you know, they're magicless, but the twst boys did struggle and Yuu's quite the challenge too. So what if, after Yuu's overblot, they had a full on mental breakdown. Not like crying mental breakdown, they're full on SCREAMING, their voice are cracking too, and very painful to hear. They started to unconsciously harm themselves so they have to be tied down to prevent to hurt themselves further. How would the dormleaders react to that?
(Sorry for my English and if I ever break a rule, it's OK if you decide to not do this too. Btw I got this idea when I watch ATLA aka Aang the last airbender, for reference of the breakdown of Yuu just search "Azula's breakdown" that practically how their breakdown looked like :D)
I cant write headcanons because you basically wrote everything. I will just make comments and additions to this. first I mention the background, secondly Azulaā€™s breakdown so non ATLA watchers can understand a little and lastly, MC having breakdown like Azula. For the record, I could write about ATLA for pages since it is something I love since 2005. LOL This became a bit meta xd
You can join the discord server here šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£
Firstly, the back ground:
I was 7 years old when ATLA started airing. Iā€™d be excited to get back home to watch ATLA after school. Azulaā€™s breakdown was awful back then when I first watch it as a kid. And of course, when they aired the episodes again and again. I rewatched again because I remembered the show being dope when I was in 12th grade which was stress relief while studying for university exams, and then I rewatched last year and even founded a Zutara server. Now Iā€™m getting back to the point. In the last two rewatching, I saw Azula in a different light and her breakdown at the end of the show was understandable. I can recommend some ATLA meta that you might like.Ā
Secondly, Azulaā€™s breakdown:Ā
Azula lost everything. In the flashbacks, you saw she was getting along with Zuko, laughing and playing tag until Ozaiā€™s influence on her grew while Ursa showed more affection towards Zuko since Ozai basically hated Zuko. These two triggered each other and it grew like snowball effect which came to the point that Ozai-Azula and Ursa-Zuko. She didnā€™t get love from Ozai, she was just a puppet, someone to empower him more, not his daughter meanwhile to Ursa, she was a monster. Azula was 8 years oldĀ  Ursa disappeared. Imagine how this would affect the child. After this, she had estranged brother that she was jealous of because of Ursaā€™s love, a father who manipulated her, and an uncle who was too in pain to do anything and he was more focused on Zuko. She only had Mai and Ty Lee asĀ ā€œfriendsā€ but it was toxic and Azula used fear to control them. After Zuko got banished, Mai and Ty Lee went to their own places, leaving Azula alone with Ozai. Just when Zuko got back, she was being like the last times, cruel teasing, Mai and Ty Lee with her. Later, Zuko went away and probably got lectured by Ozai for her lie. Mai and Ty Lee stood against her. In the end, she had no one. Ozai didnā€™t want her with him either because he only wants power. Being alone drew her to the edge. In the Royal Hair Washing, the girl sje fired had her face. Her self hatred was palpable. She started to reflect this via Ursa, the mother who thought her as monster and didnā€™t love her like she did Zuko. I believe she would have had breakdown if she actually killed Zuko. At the end, she couldnā€™t handle it anymore. Being all alone, not being loved, self hatred and finally failing at something which is something she knows Ozai would never tolerate like he did with Zuko. This 14-year-old wouldnā€™t be able to handle it anymore and had breakdown.
Now last section, MC having breakdown like Azulaā€™s:
Letā€™s see the things MC went through:
Stripped away from home
Doesnā€™t have much memory of it
Is thrusted into a world so foreign to them, where everything is foreign to them. There is no familiar thing that can make them recall home or feel at home
Is forced to study things that they have no prior info where the others have prior info and they are expected to ace the tests. This puts on pressure on regular students, canā€™t imagine the pressure they would feel since they barely understand the magic.
Is treated like trash by everyone at least once. From the first moment they came to Twisted Wonderland, they were like dirtbag. Dire gave them a house where they could get Hepatitis A to C, tetanus, hypothermia and any other disease. They have lived in that state for months and the house barely got fixed by the end of exams. They got belittled or used by almost all characters at least once. Examples: Vil calling them nobody; Azul trying to take the only thing they have from them, the dorm; Riddle calling them uneducated because not having magical parents; Leona acting like they are a toy in E2; Jamil literally manipulating their choice; sometimes NPC characters talked; Cater making them do his work etc.
They are given more than a person should handle. They are not certificated psychologist, they arenā€™t superhuman, they donā€™t have super healing... They are just human but has to fight enemies than can easily kill them if it were not the magic users around them. They are given the task of dealing with the emotional breakdown of the other people.
All of these are building up more and more. Maybe they started to get along with people after the belittlement and being used but every new character does this. At one point, it will be too much and they will thinkĀ ā€œthey are only nice to me because I did a favor to them. If not for that, they wouldnā€™t be nice to meā€ which would lead to self doubt. When one starts doubting themselves, everything else starts to go down. Also, new characters treating them that way adds salt to the wound.
MC isnā€™t a professional psychologist. They canā€™t handle other peopleā€™s issues without taking a toll at themselves. They donā€™t even catch a break between everything.
Dire is deliberately keeping them away from home as they all do the errands he say. To him, what MC wants doesnā€™t matter much. The game doesnā€™t show but if MC has family and friends or pets, you canā€™t tell me that they wouldnā€™t miss them once or see, hug them or know their state, alive-dead, healthy-sick etc.Ā
Lastly not being invincible. The end of Episode 5 shows this well. They couldnā€™t stand against Grim who isnā€™t as powerful as the other overblot characters. They are mortal who can get hurt easily.
Now all these build up meanwhile we donā€™t see an MC centered chapter, how they are etc. Itā€™s all about the others. Maybe there were a few chapters asking if MC is okay after everything but it feels like it is in the second plan.Ā
Everything that I mentioned can lead to a breakdown like Azulaā€™s. Everything is just too much to handle and they donā€™t talk with a professional about it. When they finally let out everything, it feels much better, screaming out their lungs, lashing out like all of them did. They are finally letting out all of their emotions, crying and screaming; yet still feels better than bottling everything up. They think maybe thatā€™s how overblot characters felt.
All in all, everyone in NRC needs a counselor.

Why do I ship SNS?
It is a known fact that when people experience a good media, they like to discuss various things they liked, hated, interpret what the creator trying to say and get something from what they have consumed. Eventually people end up in a shipping war if there are multiple possibilities.Ā
I started watching Naruto on a whim, hoping to see some ninjas in action with some revenge as a background (after all when you have power, there will always be a revenge). Am a sucker for revenge, btw. I am a person who hates romance in media. Because, every movie, book, novel, series has this same recycled romance plastered into every story even though the story donā€™t need at all. So, I am very tired of it. Every media portrays romance as something inevitable, necessary and something we canā€™t live without. Thatā€™s wrong.Ā
Usually, romance goes like this... Person A sees Person B... they hate each other and add some possessiveness, jealousy... they magically gets attracted through some shared experiences eventually... they kiss and make babies. Thereā€™s nothing wrong with this. Itā€™s just very tiring as Iā€™ve seen million forms of this same repeated trope. I always cringe and yellĀ ā€œCan you give us something different? Grrr.....ā€.
And also, my motto is that love can happen with any person. It canā€™t be restrained into certain boundaries. So, I donā€™t like to put some relationship under an umbrella called Gay, Lesbian, Straight or whatever. Of course, illicit relationships and incest are not normal and am not okay with it.
With all that being said...
My experience after watching the Shippuden series until episode 478 wasĀ ā€œWait, do they love each other?ā€. I know am very late to realize this, but I have never even viewed them with any romantic lens throughout.Ā
On my first watch, I was always under the impression that ā€œThey are friendsā€... But there are certain moments I feltĀ ā€œWait, why are they doing like this which couldā€™ve been handled in a different way!!ā€ I will get to this later in this post. But those moments were overlooked by me because of my curiosity of ā€œWhat happens next ??ā€.Ā
And on my rewatch, it only confirmed my view.Ā
The other popular ships like SS and NH put forth many points to invalidate what SNS represents. The most common beingĀ ā€œThey are reincarnated brothersā€ orĀ  ā€œThey are best friendsā€. Am just going to debunk them from my point of view.Ā
Naruto and Sasuke are like brothers.....
Nope.Ā
The best brotherhood title, in this series, should officially go to Itachi and Sasuke.Ā
Tumblr media
You can argue as much as you want that Itachi mindfucked Sasuke and killed his parents....yaada yaada....Ā
It is repeatedly shown why Itachi put a curtain on his own clan. The reason is, Uchiha clan decided to forcefully take over the village. No matter how much innocent you are, you cannot take over something with force. Dot. I will write about this in a separate post.
In short, Sasuke realised how his clan members were wrong after hearing the story from the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju. Thatā€™s why he openly proclaimedĀ ā€œI am going to protect Konoha and become Hokageā€.Ā
Back to the topic, Itachi and Sasuke are blood brothers. If I ship them both, then what you claim is very valid.Ā
The above gif says,Ā ā€œSasuke, I know, I made a mistake by filling you with hatred. But whatever you decide to do from now on, I will love you alwaysā€. Meaning, He stopped treating Sasuke as a kid and accepts that Sasuke has his own path to walk.
This is exactly how brothers behave. I would do the same to my kid sister. You can see a fraternal instinct from Itachiā€™s eyes realizing that this is their last time together.
Another thing, Brothers trope always has this hierarchy.... Protect the younger sibling no matter what. It is evident from Madara/Izuna and Hashirama/Tobirama.
Not convinced?
Tumblr media
If you pull the Indra and Ashura bullshit, let me tell you one thing. Indra and Ashura were separated and formed their own clan long ago. They eventually branched off into Uchiha and Senju clans. No way you can relate a century old blood relation as brothers. Itā€™s just their chakra got reincarnated over and over.Ā
Donā€™t pull up an incest angle between Naruto and Sasuke. Because they never shared a womb. Dot.Ā
Naruto and Sasuke are Best Friends only.
You know what, you are almost right. I thought that for a very long time. Remember I never wore any shipping goggles ON.Ā
There are two types of best friend categories. Best Friends without a reason and Best Friends through rivalry.Ā
Best Friends without a reason in Narutoverse are: Shikamaru/Choji.Ā
They just became friends and became BFF. They wonā€™t fight or hurt each other. But when you have something to share...you would go to that person and share everything honestly.
Best Friends through Rivalry: Kakashi/Obito, Hashirama/Madara, Naruto/Sasuke
I really cannot provide more proof for the first two pairings as Best Friends as it is not the scope of this post. Although the latter two also qualifies for shipping category. Why?
Because, the common thing among them is that all the three Uchihas awakened/reawakened their Sharingan for their best friend. But Hashirama/Madara and Naruto/Sasuke are the only pairings to awaken or evolve Sharingan when trying to break their bonds with each other.Ā
Special Brownie points for Madara. He had 4 brothers and lost 3 but still couldnā€™t awaken his Sharingan but when trying to break up with Hashirama, his eyes were brimming red.Ā
Tumblr media
Sasukeā€™s Sharingan matures in the first Valley of The End.
Tumblr media
Thatā€™s why I excluded Hashirama/Madara and Naruto/Sasuke from this Best Friends list.
Because to the both Uchihas, the other person meant something special which cannot be comprehended into a mere term calledĀ ā€˜Best Friendsā€™.
Which is exactly why Kakashi/Obito would perfectly fall into this category.
The way they quarrel, fight with each other, protect each other are perfect scores for a friendship. What makes them best friends is when Obito decided to give his Sharingan despite Kakashi was always putting a cold air around him and most importantly asked him to protect his loveĀ ā€˜Rinā€™. Also Kakashi carried his friendā€™s will to his heart and passed on to Team 7.
It all falls under ā€˜In the memory of my Best Friendā€™ trope.
Obito may be a trash but he is a good friend. Because after Rin was killed, he massacred everyone around him except for Kakashi. He could have killed him. Understandable. Or he could have plucked his Sharingan back (because he literally plucked most of the Sharingans from the Uchiha clan massacre and kept those eyes as a reserve). This could have enabled him to use Susanoo. I believe Susanoo can only be used with Mangekyo Sharingan in both eyes. But for some reason, he didnā€™t.Ā
So what makes me think Naruto and Sasuke love each other, not as a brother and not as a friend but something beyond which I canā€™t term?
My way of shipping is not about marriage, sex and rearing babies. Because literally everyone does this as an obligation.Ā
So, I donā€™t ship them in terms of living together in my headcanon and having sex daily. Nope. But it is not wrong though if you ship in that sense.
In this Narutoverse, Women are just some stow away pieces whose sole existence is to fawn over their dreamboy and cry for them. (Usually literally nothing useful comes out of them). Me being a girl, as much as I hate this setup but I have come to terms with whatever it is and have accepted it. If you are a girl looking for a strong female character...... this is not the place. Watch something else.Ā
But I draw inspiration from male characters who are characterized deeply for which I have to applaud the creator. Reason being, the very first character which I connected with was Itachi. It was when Sasuke thinks about his past with his family in the flashback before the first VotE battle in part I. I will be writing a separate post about Itachi in this week.Ā
In short, If you are a person who wants inspiration, draw it from male characters. Not in a single moment, you stoop so low for characters like Hinata and Sakura. Thatā€™s not how I envision myself or any woman. Dot.
With all this being said, I ship them as a couple who necessarily donā€™t have to get married or have sex... But they each other has some special allowance towards each other in their hearts which no one can touch, not even their wives or children.Ā
This doesnā€™t mean I accept what came after episode 478 as they are literally something they made for $$$$$.Ā
There are some basic traits which are absolutely necessary for a ship to sail successfully. They are Acknowledgement, Reason, No Hierarchy, Influence, Owning each others rights and Privilege. (All these reasons should come from both the sides for the ship to be worthy)
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Acknowledgement, I mean here, is to accept and acknowledge what they are to each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They both agree that they are Bonded/Friends verbally as well as emotionally.
To me, this is essential in any relationship especially for the ones you are trying to ship. I didnā€™t see this in any other ships like SS or NH where it is always one sided. Sakura confessed before the village entrance to which Sasuke saidĀ ā€œYou really are annoying!!ā€. Hinata proposed in Pain arc. Naruto didnā€™t even acknowledge her confession. He went on to beg for pardon for Sasuke. Again she proposed in the War at the expense of Love CupidĀ ā€œNejiā€. Naruto went on to joke with Minato that Sakura is his Girl Friend.Ā
If I were in both of these girls place, I would literally be mad and drop this shit right away.
Wheras in SNS, I saw both the people I am trying to ship were askingĀ ā€œWhat am I to you?ā€, to which they replyĀ ā€œYou are my friendā€. To me this is very important.
Reason
To those who are sayingĀ ā€œLove is blindā€,Ā ā€œLove is Madnessā€,Ā ā€œLove needs no reasonā€, you all need self-evaluation. This is not some K Drama situation where you donā€™t need any reason. You should know why you love someone and why you need the otherā€™s presence.
Narutoā€™s reason is very simple.
Tumblr media
I could provide many reasons. But here, Sasuke, without any reservations... knowing full well of the consequence if he feed Naruto but still extended the helping hand to someone who was always hostile. It is just like what Iruka did. And many incidents which happened during Land of the Waves arc are evident.
He wanted to be friends with this lonely Uchiha boy way back when he was around 7 or 8 for a simple reason that he understands his pain more than anyone. But he really became friends when they were grouped together for Team 7.Ā Ā
Sasukeā€™s reason goes even way beyond when Naruto series started.
Tumblr media
ā€œBecause he felt reliefā€.
Imagine a young boy who witnessed a massacre before his eyes and lost everyone he loved. But somehow another young boy of his age made him feel relieved. This explains why Sasuke went all out of his way to make friendship with Naruto despite being aloof.Ā
Isnā€™t this what we want from someone we love?Ā Ā
Rather than being completely insensitive about an orphan life or just stalking from the distance and never offered any support, I would prefer someone who understands my pain from their heart and try to reach me. Sasuke reached out to him by offering the lunch and Naruto reached out to him by making him his rival and bug him.
NO HIERARCHY
This is pretty self-explanatory. Unlike blood brothers, there should be no hierarchy in a relationship I want to ship.Ā
We saw Naruto yells at Sasuke many times absolutely for no reason, despite Sasuke bearing this cold attitude. Probably he is the only person who can call him by such variety of names.Ā
Sasuke always calls him by his trademarkĀ ā€˜Usuratonkachiā€™.Ā Sometimes he calls him fool just like everyone. But was never insulting or mean towards Naruto. Except for that time in the final battle, he made fun of his Shadow Clone jutsu citing his loneliness.Ā
In short, be it a physical fight or verbal offense.... neither of them wilts like a flower. They equally give back.Ā
The only other person who can verbally assault Sasuke is Karin and probably the only girl who never addresses him asĀ ā€œSasuke-Kunā€.Ā
U-SU-RA-TON-KA-CHI..... Why do Sasuke spend such an effort to call someone with a 6 syllabic word, instead NA-RU-TO, a 3 syllabic word which is way more convenient to call?? I always wonder.
POSITIVE INFLUENCE
I donā€™t have to spell out anything here. There are many obvious examples but will try to keep it short.Ā
Naruto became strong because of Sasuke. He trained hard for 3 years with Jiraiya , a month with Kakashi developing Rasen Shuriken and controlled Kuramaā€™s power with Killer Bee. Except for Sage Mode jutsu everything he learnt was all for bringing Sasuke back.Ā
In short, Sasuke is Narutoā€™s predominant strength.Ā
Though Naruto was not the source of strength for Sasuke, but he brings out many vibrant emotions in Sasuke which he really needed for his traumatic mind otherwise he would always be that cold angry brooding doll without any emotions and I am sure Sasuke enjoys to banter with Naruto.
Tumblr media
LOL!!! I donā€™t know why Sasuke feels competitve here. Itā€™s pretty childish even for Sasuke.
Tumblr media
Friendly tease :-) I think he also protected Sakura in this scene. He can also ask her the same, isnā€™t it? I mean as a friend.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best one is yet to come
Tumblr media
Itā€™s incredibly hilarious to see how Sasuke pouts when he was with Naruto. Sakura!!!! You third wheeling joker :-D :-D
Throughout Shippuden, Sasuke never shows his emotions with anyone. He either looks very cold or angry.
Tumblr media
Reminiscing his Team 7 days, for a split second.Ā
Probably the only positive emotion is this, in all of the Shippuden. I mean not counting Episode 478.
I donā€™t think Sakura brought any kind emotions in Sasuke except annoyance when they were together in Team 7. Or Hinata too. These girls just moanĀ ā€œSasuke-Kunā€,Ā ā€œNaruto-Kunā€ but brings nothing to the table. Total wastrels!!!!!
OWNING EACH OTHERā€™S RIGHTS
This section is exactly where SNS moves on to a whole different level.
Sasuke wanted to inflict his pain over everyone who lives in peaceful Konoha for what it did to Itachi. (though I donā€™t really accept with Sasuke here since he never even bothered to question about his clanā€™s history, but what he was doing is understandable. Just like Naruto tells him).
But the context here is Sasuke is on a murder rampage. Starting from the Kage Summit, killing Danzo, unnecessarily hurting Karin and almost reached a point where he could not be stopped anymore. Then Ms.Annoying appears. She literally have no fucking clue what Sasuke is going through. So started to spout nonsense that she wanted to go with Sasuke-Kun with an ulterior motive to kill him without a strong resolve.Ā
The interesting SS dynamics here is Sasuke asks SakuraĀ ā€œDo you know what I want?ā€ and to which she gives a carefree-shitty-pathetic answerĀ ā€œI donā€™t care. I will do whatever you wantā€. Geez!!!
If I were Sasuke, I would think,Ā ā€œThis person standing before me donā€™t even care about what I want but coming with an intent to kill me and not only that... she is a kunoichi from Konoha where I planned to inflict my pain by slaughtering them.. I better ram my Chidori and be done with itā€... He doesnā€™t see her as his former Teammate. He just want to kill that person.
However, Kakashi deflects the attack and saves Ms.Useless.Ā
( Me : I am a Sasuke fan through and through. But, Sakura..... You always says you will do this, do that.... But you never succeed at anything... Why is that? Why are you even continue being a ninja? No one asked you to kill Sasuke, you decided to. But why donā€™t you kill him. Probably you wouldā€™ve earned my begrudging respect... Pffftā€ ****sighs with a heavy second hand embarassment)
Anyways, Sasuke becomes an unstoppable maniac at this point because he was very irritated on seeing Kakashi and Sakura spouting some unreachable nonsense. So he started to attack Kakashi as he is even more irritated on seeing his Sharingan.
Again, Ms.Idiot wants to kill Sasuke when he is at his weakest point due to chakra exhaustion and that too from behind his back. (You!!! Gutless wrench). Sasuke sensed this and attempted to kill her again... (Naruto!!! You idiot. Why did you save her...)
However, Naruto appears and saves her. Naruto and Sasukeā€™s eyes meet each other.
But somehow Sasuke calmed down and hears out Naruto for what he has to say. He says,Ā ā€œWhatever you are doing until now, itā€™s understandableā€.Ā
Kakashi wanted to kill him and Sasuke got riled up and prepare his Chidori. Anyways, Naruto intervenes and they go to some meta physical plane and talks privately. And Naruto comes up with his idea and announces as below:
Tumblr media
Me: Naruto!!!! Sweety..... Do you realize that you have a big dream of becoming a Hokage which you have been shouting from Day 1? But still you want to overthrow everything for that one person who is in unbearable pain. Itā€™s alright. But you donā€™t want to go alone or send him alone. No Best friend would go this far. And to those Sakura shippers.... Why didnā€™t Sakura try to bear the burden? Why didnā€™t she come up with this Idea? Afterall, you spout nonsense like ā€˜Sakura saved Sasuke from Darkness, isnā€™t it?ā€™ And, Naruto.... Who gave you the right to take his hatred and shoulder the burden? And what makes you think you are that only person to do it??? Sasuke, might have other special person in those 3 years. How can you decide on Sasukeā€™s behalf??? Arenā€™t you going overboard ?
The answer to all the above is simple, Naruto can risk anything for Sasuke. And he clearly knew that Sasukeā€™s only living bond is him.
And what happened next was almost unbelievable and for the first time I thoughtĀ ā€˜What is it with these two guys?ā€™.Ā
Sasuke agrees with Narutoā€™s proposition to not destroy Konoha before fighting with Naruto.Ā
Me: Sasuke!!!! You have every right to reject his proposition. Since, he was not in your life for the past 3 years, your side of bond with Naruto should have been cut-off long back, right? Sasuke??? Well, at this point he was just your former Team 7 member. You donā€™t need to honor your proposition. You can attack Konoha anytime. Why did you accept?
Also Me: Sweety!!! Why do you always question NarutoĀ ā€˜Who am I to youā€™? Why do you need his opinion always? There is an annoying princess standing behind Naruto vying for your attention. And yet you didnā€™t even ask her this question at any time. But before Naruto, you completely calmed down from your rampage and willing to wait for what he has to say plus asking for his validation. After all you donā€™t care about anything, why just Naruto???
Tumblr media
And the reason being, Naruto is still his closest bond which he couldnā€™t cut off despite trying very hard. After all, Many years ago, Sasuke was the one, who readily jumped in to protect Naruto knowing full well that itā€™s a trap. He was ready to throw away his revenge for this boy back then. Sasuke is afraid that he will give in to this bond once more and Naruto is his weakness which he wants to eliminate so badly.
This is definitely not any Best Friend would do..... Fix that in your mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The purpose of these GIFs is not show how protective Sasuke is..... Well, I can talk about it all day. Letā€™s save it.
Me: Yo!!!! Sasuke..... You wanted to kill Naruto.... You said so yourself under the bridge. Meaning, He is the only person standing between your goal and your resolve and Naruto is always known to weaken your resolve. And yet why are you protecting him here? There is absolutely no need. Because, if there is a situation like Kaguya where both of you are must needed to save this world , then there is a reason to save him. But why now? Plus do you know, if Naruto dies, then Madaraā€™s plan may not succeed because if a Jinchuriki dies, tailed beast also dies. It is perfect for your Revolution, isnā€™t it? Who gave you the right to own his life? Obito has his reason to kill Naruto, why not let him?Why is it that you want to personally remove him from your life? If he is dead by an external factor, you can carry on your path without any interference and pain. Why go so far to protect him ?
The answer is Sasuke values Narutoā€™s life more than his own even during his Team 7 days. He has this high esteem for Naruto and almost consider it to be a shame if some worthless fool takes his life. And Sasuke never hated Naruto. He once hated Itachi and his resolve to kill was real and intense. But when Orochimaru asked him to kill 1000 people for practice, Sasuke never killed anyone. He even implemented no kill policy for his teamĀ ā€œHebiā€. So, someone like Sasuke who never liked to kill random innocent people, how could he let some trash take away a life, he considers dearly to the same level of Itachi? Thatā€™s why in this situation, his body moved on his own to protect something special for him. He may not agree it, but he always shows it.
But some other ship wankers try to say Sasuke may have saidĀ ā€œYou are annoyingā€ but inside he deeply loved her which is why he was smiling. If so, Why didnā€™t Sasuke never showed his care not even once? He not only tried to kill her twice when she was defenseless but also let her die twice or didnā€™t bother at all during the war. Or show me where these soul level connection happened between SS or NH
In short, Sasuke and Naruto own each otherā€™s rights unconsciously. Because they are the only ones who can understand each otherā€™s soul which nobody can reach.
Tumblr media
Me: Oh, by the way Sasuke, I think Susanoo should be used like this. You really donā€™t need your hand to protect Naruto. Susanoo can do itā€™s work for you. Minato would be proud though!!!!
PRIVILEGE
Most of the points I written above are in and of itself is a privilege they give for each other and not for anyone else. Privilege is essential in a ship. Because it shows how different a loved one is from normal people.Ā
For Naruto,Ā
Tumblr media
I originally want to put how he begs for forgiveness on Sasukeā€™s behalf before Raikage and weeps immeasurably before hyperventilating. But this one trumps the other. Naruto literally broadcasted everyone how important Sasuke is to him and how he regretted not offering his friendship at that time and how he couldnā€™t stop Sasuke from reaching Orochimaru.Ā
If you want to inspire Alliance shinobi forces, you should have shown how you worked so hard from the bottom to top. Projecting Sasuke as your regret and inspiring people shows how deeply you prioritize this person which affects you after so many years and hence, you donā€™t want any more regrets.Ā
Itā€™s very unconventionally romantic which passes the shipping category in flying colours.Ā
For Sasuke,
The following is the Land of the waves arc which was novelized in the name of Innocent Heart, Demonic Blood released in 2006. 99.9% of the material is exactly as it happens in Manga/Anime.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the privilege Sasuke provides for Naruto.Ā ā€œ But coming from Sasuke,Ā It almost counted as a hugā€...Ā
BROWNIE POINTS:
Now, the following are the scenes which add a mysterious flavour to this ship. I sincerely donā€™t understand why Kishimoto put this. I mean I am absolutely happy with it, but why? What was he thinking while drawing these scenes?Ā
Tumblr media
Itā€™s also strange that, whenever they clash a Chidori with Rasengan..... They always gets repelled to their own sides and fall with a loud thump. But Narutoā€™s posture looks very perfect, I mean it looks like someone carried him and laid him down. Anyways, Whatā€™s Sasuke doing on Narutoā€™s side?? He should have fell on the opposite side. Why didnā€™t he walk away? There is absolutely no reason for Sasuke to come over to Narutoā€™s side and have an intense meaningful gaze.Ā
Tumblr media
This is another mysterious plus intense scene. I am still wondering, Is this really Sasuke? He is a person who avoids casual touches with anyone other than his brother. Iā€™ve seen so many times Sasuke rejecting hugs from Sakura. I canā€™t even imagine what Kishimoto was thinking.Ā
If you people pass these scenes off as Brotherhood or Best Friend chemistry... Then you lack basic human emotions. Thatā€™s all.Ā
Me: Well, Sasuke, If you really want to kill him, you should have shovelled your sword right through Narutoā€™s vital point when you made that exuberant landing. There is literally no need for you to draw a long sword in close quarters. And what about the Personal Space??? With your speed, you can land without leaning on Narutoā€™s shoulders...Ā
Also Me: Yo, Naruto... You were panicking when Sai does the same....but you donā€™t even flinch when Sasuke invades your personal space????
Anyways, itā€™s funny that both the intense scenes I have mentioned here were initiated by Sasuke. Quite strange and thrilling.
So, to conclude.... All these scenes I have mentionedĀ  made me unconsciously ship them as a pair. With all these being said, I believe all the ingredients for a good romance were laid perfectly. A moment of impulsive tension or affection, say a hug, between them after a difficult battle could mess with both and make a romance happen. And I donā€™t think either of them will deny especially Sasuke.Ā
I donā€™t see any of this aspect in other popular ships such as SS and NH. If I am Sakura or Hinata in this universe, I will not be okay with my pair doing all these things with other person. I intentionally left scenes from Episode 478 as it is so intense and require a separate post. I am happy that even without Episode 478, SNS ship sails high. So, I believe both Sakura and Hinata are still fourth wheeling their respective pairs in Boruto universe also, I guess.Ā
P.S: I donā€™t watch Boruto

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 14 first part
(RR The Untamed Masterpost) (Canaryā€™s Pinboard - more Masterposts)Ā
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Tumblr media
Murder Turtle, Continued
Lan Wangji wakes up after a good night's sleep leaning against a rock wall, to find that his leg is no longer splinted, and his perfectly clean and unbloody headband has been put back on his head while he was sleeping.
Tumblr media
Leaving aside the "not waking up" part of things, how, exactly, did Wei Wuxian get his headband on without mussing his hair? Did he bring a crochet hook?
Wei Wuxian gives him a sitrep and then they cozy up and have an extended conversation about the nature and history of the Tortoise of Slaughter. Wei Wuxian is interested in everything Lan Wangji has to say, and Lan Wangji talks a lot more than usual; they are completely on the same wavelength here and are enjoying swapping obscure knowledge.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji: My lacerated leg and I are actually super aware that it has big teeth, but thanks for the reminder.
In the course of the conversation, Wei Wuxian mentions his plan toĀ 1. sneak into the tortoise's shell and 2. drive it out of its shell so they can attack it.Ā
OP did a little tortoise research and learned that the only species of turtle that can leave its shell is the Koopa Troopa.
Tumblr media
Good news for Wei Wuxian: If you jump on its shell in the right spot, you can rack up a pile of extra lives.
Does that make the Tortoise of Slaughter a giant Koopa Troopa? Perhaps...the king of the Koopa Troopas?
Tumblr media
I'm gonna say yes.
(More after the cut)
Letā€™s Go Killing
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian is exhilarated by the idea of fighting a giant dangerous monster with Lan Wangji.Ā Some day Wei Wuxian will found the Nike clan, because his motto is definitely "Just do it."Ā
It's sweet how, in his romantic notions about chivalry and Lan Wangji, he's completely elided the original reason they were (sort of) told to venture together.Ā
Wei Wuxian:Ā I'm still on the "find the Yin Iron" quest; I'm just skipping the "suppress it" part. Ā
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian weighs up their chances against Bowser and tells Lan Wangji that even if they die, it will be badass to be killed by a famous monster, so they won't have to feel embarrassed.
This is the exact moment that Lan Wangji's feelings for Wei Wuxian go from "smitten" to "gagging for it."
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji: as soon as we get out of hereĀ I'm going to borrow a whole lot of books from Nie Huaisang
The boys come up with a plan that involves a rather long montage of collecting archery equipment and deconstructing it. This potentially-dull montage is fun to watch because they are both very, very good looking.
Tumblr media
Artists who want to draw Wang Yibo as an elven archer, this is your episode.
Tumblr media
Now we suddenly have, with zero explanation, telepathy. Ok, sure. It seems to work kind of like a phone conversation, in which they say specific things to each other, rather than like Cherry Magic telepathy where you can hear everything the other person is thinking. Or at least, neither of them is embarrassed, so I assume they are maintaining some mental privacy.
Club Ruohan
Tumblr media
Same, Wen Chao, same
At some point there is a boring sequence at Club Ruohan. Ā Wen Ruohan doesn't know where Xue Yang is, but really wants his hunk of Yin Iron. Wen Chao thinks that WRH's 3 pieces of Yin Iron should be able to beat Xue Yang's 1 piece, but apparently he is dumb and that is not how math works. O...kay? OP does not understand this either but whatever, Wen Ruohan is boring, moving on. This scene is really just here to make us think about Yin Iron before Wei Wuxian jumps into Bowser's shell.
Bigger On The Inside
So thenĀ Wei Wuxian climbs into Bowser's shell, which is, to quote The 12th Doctor, bigger on the inside.
Tumblr media
Bowserā€™s shell is the approximate size of my entire house. It is also bathed in a hellish pure red photo filter, which OP has done her best to remove for these gifs, because it gives me eye strain and it obscures Xiao Zhan's hotness.
Tumblr media
Camera Operator: What did I do?Ā
Wei Wuxian wanders around inside, finding random corpses encased in slime cocoons. Tortoise, spider, xenomorph, whatever. There are also random curtain things hanging all over, and then at one point Wei Wuxian stares into the face of a corpse, and then does a jump scare response at the camera operator even though nothing particular happened.Ā
I imagine the corpse was supposed to open its eyes and say "killl meeee" but it got censored. He also makes about 8 other faces at the camera operator, so we get that the inside of this TARDIS-like tortoise shell (must...resist...temptation...to...say...TORDIS) is yucky.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji waits outside listening to Wei Wuxian telepathically complain about the smell. Ā He is anxiously clenching a bundle of string and an arrow, and wishing he could clench Wei Wuxian Bichen instead.
Serendipitous Yin Iron
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian backs his way through the TORDIS until his butt bumps into a sword that is steaming with resentful energy. That's right: Wei Wuxian is about to pull a piece of Yin Iron almost literally out of his ass.
He grabs it and is overwhelmed by its screaming resentful energy and has to let it go again.
Tumblr media
So this is what a vibrator with 4 batteries feels like
When Bowser comes looking for him, however, he quickly decides to go for it, grabbing the sword and singing "I've Got the Power (Gonna Make You Sweat)"
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian plunges the sword into Bowser's lower jaw, and Bowser pulls his entire head out of his shell with Wei Wuxian attached, while leaving the rest of his body and all rational laws of physics inside the shell.
Tumblr media
Gamera Versus the Cultivators
What follows is one of the more ridiculous action sequences in the history of the world, and I say that as someone who likes Mothra movies.Ā
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian hovers in a perfect horizontal plank while ā€œhanging fromā€ the sword, which is held well below the level of his torso. While Bowser spins him around. For much of the time, Bowser keeps his head still and just waves his neck around.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji and the camera operator do everything they possibly can to make "guy pulls on string" look interesting.Ā
Tumblr media
Everybody tries really, really hard and the actors are great at pretending something is there when it isn't, but this whole sequence is just horribly conceived.
Tumblr media
What works well, though, is the Yin energy and Wei Wuxian's wrangling of it. He starts off being frightened and overwhelmed, and looking like it's too much for him; I dont' know if they made his face puffy on purpose or if that's just what happens when you spend days hanging from the ceiling fighting an imaginary monster. But he looks slack and unwell as he grapples with the iron sword.
Tumblr media
Which makes this moment, when he gets control of it, deliciously creepy. He uses the power of the Yin Iron to stick a bunch of pokey things into Bowser's neck.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji has seen him struggling and now sees him...not struggling. Which scares the piss out of him, and he moves to finish the fight as quickly as possible, slicing up his hand and breaking the string. Combined with the pokey things, this does the trick and Bowser dies while Wei Wuxian faints and falls into the water.
Do the Whumpty Whump
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji rescues him and wakes him up, and Wei Wuxian clutches the Yin Iron sword and tells Lan Wangji that he was knocked out by the screaming of disembodied voices.
Tumblr media
This certainly sounds like a strange and dangerous phenomenon, so Lan Wangji carefully asks him to explain everything.
Tumblr media
Ha ha ha j/k. Lan Wangji asks him exactly nothing about the strange sword or the black smoke or his weird evil smile or his new power over pointy objects. Lan Wangji appears to have a Star Trek: TNG level of unconcern about strange phenomena happening directly under his nose. But in fact he has noticed what's up, which is why he will be instantly distressed when he sees Wei Wuxian's flute moves at the Wen Corporate Headquarters.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian has a fever (stay positive test negative) and comments on Lan Wangji's being so nice to him.
Wei Wuxian: I could never have imagined Lan Er Gongzi acting this concerned about me. Lan Wangji: what else have you never imagined me doing, while we're on the subject?Ā
Lan Wangji transfers a stream of spiritual energy to him. Lan Wangji has so much spiritual power he can be a battery for Wei Wuxian without breaking a sweat or, like, noticing whether Wei Wuxian has a golden core or not, for that matter.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian basks in the nice feeling of gigajoules for a while but then decides he's bored. So then he pouts, whines, and cajoles Lan Wangji in exactly, EXACTLY the way he whines at Jiang Yanli.Ā  I think this, while annoying of him, is a leap forward in his relationship with Lan Wangji.
Tumblr media
He's letting his guard down and not just allowing Lan Wangji to take care of him; he's demanding to be cared for on multiple vectors, when he asks the guy who's already busy healing him to sing to him as well.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji obliges, singing him the song he composed about their love cultivation journey, while Wei Wuxian (or possibly Lan Wangji) (or possibly both) has a flashback to assorted sexy interactions that they've had so far.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian memorizes the song perfectly on one hearing, before passing out.

Diaval x Reader (Maleficentā€™s daughter)
Summary: Inspired by what Aurora has done, reader volunteers to venture to a nearby kingdom to make peace between more humans and the Moors. Though she is welcomed as a guest, sheā€™s been gone for quite some time and has begun to miss the comforts of home. That is, until a certain raven shows up missing her just as much.Ā
A/N:Ā Yo. Might do some more of these ā€œshortsā€Ā Idk. I rewatched both Maleficent movies and realized there isn't enough Diaval out there. I wanna write these little fics for funnzies on the side. I might be into it. If youā€™re into itĀ  *shrugs* lmk. Donā€™t forget to smash that like button and ring that bell to turn notifications on.Ā
Words: 3,191
It had been hours since curfew had passed. The entire castle had fallen silent under the dark blanket of night. Everyone was undoubtedly asleep, everyone but you. You found this to be your regular nightly routine. You found it incredibly hard to fall asleep in a castle this large, how the nobles did it each night baffled you.Ā
Two moons had surely passed since you last saw the rivers of the Moors. Though you missed it, you knew that what you were doing was right. If others were willing to sacrifice their comfort for peace, you must do the same. You had always seen the world a different way than your mother. Where she saw greed and weakness, you saw beauty, wonder and hope. Hope that one day there might be peace between humans and the magical creatures of the Moors. So that one day they would be able to travel passed their boarders and venture beyond what little they knew. When you closed your eyes you imagined the pixies and other creatures laughing and singing among human folk, in peace.Ā
Aurora was the one who pushed you to do this. Though she was ten years younger than you, she still shared the same dream you did. After marrying Prince Philip she had created that peace you dreamed of for so long. The Moors and humans were united by their marriage. It was peace, but only a small sliver of what could be. Thatā€™s why you decided to venture West to meet with other Kings and Queens to create peace treaties. People were scared of the unknown. Thatā€™s why you thought presenting yourself, a fairy, was a good idea. Once they met you and learned about your home, they would be more open to coexisting.
Your mother was against it.Ā
Aurora was on your side.Ā
Diaval... He offered to accompany you. You denied it, however. He was needed in the Moors to help protect the creatures and to keep an eye on your mother.Ā
At the thought of him, your hand mindlessly traveled down to your wrist where a small woven bracelet laid. He had given it to you the night before you left. You were sure it was intended as a simple parting gift, to remind you of home whenever you looked at it. You couldnā€™t help but feel a small tug at your heart at the thought of home. You closed your eyes at the memory of the way that the air smelt in the early morning. The lily petals blowing in the autumn breeze.Ā
Home.Ā
Your eyes opened, you were standing in front of the vanity in the dim, candlelit room. There was no smile on your face, you could see that as you examined yourself in the mirror. Reaching for the brush on the table, you absentmindedly combed through your hair. Surely you would be able to return home soon. The King had welcomed you as a guest. As far as you could tell, there was no ill intent. In fact, these humans reminded you a lot of Prince Philipā€™s father. Open-minded and willing to listen. You knew you may not get that lucky with other kingdoms.Ā
You saw your hair blow from the breeze that was trickling in from the open window across the room. Feeling the hairs on the back of your neck start to rise, you walked towards the window, reaching for the shutters, but something in the corner of your eye caught your attention. To your left, perched on one of the carved out statues next to the window was a familiar black raven you hadnā€™t seen in what felt like forever.Ā
With a small smile, you raised your finger out, inviting it to lay on your hand. The raven didnā€™t hesitate, in fact it had all ready jumped onto your finger when you had just held it out. Leaving the window open, you leaned against its frame facing the inside of your room. The raven jumped up into the air, while you had waved your other hand out lightly, emitting gold magic from your hand as you saw him transform into the man you had missed most of all.Ā
ā€œThank you for that.ā€ Diaval shook his head, straightening out his attire. The feathers on his jacket shook slightly, a few falling to the ground as you nodded, staring at the man.Ā
He took a moment to look around the room. The castleā€™s stone walls had elegant carvings on the trim of the walls. The bed was immaculate, gold lining the posts on each end. There was even gold on the windowsill.Ā It was nice, a warm beautifully decorated guest room, the only thing that didnā€™t seem to belong in the room was them.Ā
ā€œwell this is nice...ā€ He looked back at her finally.Ā
ā€œIā€™ve slept in worse places thatā€™s for sure.ā€ You felt a smile creep onto your face upon hearing his familiar voice.Ā
ā€œIndeed.ā€ He mimicked your smile, walking towards the large wardrobe on the other end of the room and running his hands over the gold lining.
ā€œWere you spying on me?ā€ You asked, a mischievous glint in your eye.Ā
ā€œI beg your pardon?ā€ He asked. His attention landed back on you.Ā
ā€œJust then, outside. Why didnā€™t you make yourself known?ā€ You nodded towards the window.Ā ā€œAre you here to report back to my mother?ā€ You asked, pushing yourself off of the wall and standing up straight, crossing your arms. It had been so long since you had seen anyone. You were sure Maleficent would have sent Diaval sooner, or even sent you a letter asking you to report back. Nevertheless, he was welcomed here, and always would be.Ā
Diaval shook his head.Ā ā€œNo she has no idea Iā€™m here.ā€ You were taken aback when he said that. It wasnā€™t like him to keep things from her. He was loyal to her, that much was clear.Ā
ā€œThen why are you here?ā€ You asked, stepping closer. You could see Diaval swallow nervously. His smile had dissipated, once you had stepped closer. After a moment of silence you let out a shaky breath. ā€œHas something happened?ā€ You asked.Ā
ā€œNothingā€™s happened. Mistress misses you, she hasnā€™t said it but she grows impatient for you to come home.ā€ Diaval spoke clearly. ā€œI thought I would come by to see how they were treating you to give her some semblance of peace.ā€Ā
ā€œRight.ā€ After his comment about Maleficent not knowing he was here, you had hoped he came for a more personal reason.Ā ā€œI'm quite fine. Theyā€™ve treated me very well.ā€ You said matter-of-factly, hand on your hip. Diaval scanned your face, and then his eyebrows rose when he saw what you were wearing.Ā
ā€œI can see that now. They have you fitted like a proper lady. Fitting, I think. Youā€™ve always been royalty. Itā€™s about time you started dressing like it, mā€™lady.ā€ He teased. A small blush crept onto your cheeks once you had locked eyes with him after he had looked you up and down. It had been too long since youā€™ve bantered with this man. You had to admit you were caught off guard by that comment.Ā
Rightfully, the Moors should have been given to you instead of Aurora. It was Maleficentā€™s intention to have you rule as her successor, however you had thought it was a good idea to have Aurora rule. At the time there was no better way to unite the humans and the magical creatures than to have a human step in and care for them. With a bit of convincing, Maleficent agreed. Uniting both kingdoms proved to be a more substantial change though.
Ruling was never something that interested you. Youā€™d much rather spend your time with matters of peace keeping and be left as a free spirit. Your attire... that was a whole different story. As your mother wore gowns that drifted past her wings, you preferred to wear things you could actually fly around in. That meant no long dresses, no laces or bows that would drag behind you in the wind.Ā
ā€œIf this is how a lady should be properly dressed, then I donā€™t think I can consider myself a lady.ā€ You rose a brow, making him chuckle.Ā
Diavalā€™s gaze trailed down to your side, finally resting on your wrist. He delicately reached down and held your hand out.
ā€œAt least you havenā€™t forgotten where you come from...ā€
Your eyes followed his. They had wandered down to your wrist where the bracelet he had given you was laying.Ā
Before he could land a kiss on the back of your hand, you cleared your throat, redacted your hand and walked past him back to the vanity. You faced the mirror and began to remove the earrings that you had on. Tonight you were dressed more proper than you could ever remember being dressed before. You had a meeting with the king to discuss the future of your kingdoms, you were required to look your best to represent the entirety of the Moors. It was an uncomfortable evening, probably for you alone. Everyone else you faced tonight seemed to be in their element, besides you. The memory hit you like a train as you detangled the earring from your hair and placed it on the jewelry tray in front of you. You felt ridiculous.Ā
ā€œThis ridiculous thing is impossible to breathe in.ā€ You mumbled to yourself.Ā You caught Diavalā€™s eye staring at you from the mirror.Ā ā€œWhat?ā€ You asked coarsely.Ā
ā€œYou look beautiful nonetheless.ā€ He said upmost sincerely. You remained frozen for what felt like hours, but was for just a few seconds before you had the courage to look away from him.Ā
Beautiful. You couldnā€™t recall a time when he had called you that. He was a dear friend. While you grew up spying on Aurora, you and he had become close without a doubt. He was your best friend, your confidant and it took every power within you to deny his presence with you when he had asked to accompany you. Truthfully, you wanted to allow him to come. But that would be selfish. You knew he was needed there. No matter how badly you wanted him to stay, you knew that he couldnā€™t stay.Ā
You glanced at him with a brow raised through the mirror. You didnā€™t realize that your eyes had become glassy until you saw them through the mirror.Ā ā€œIs that the only reason you came here?ā€Ā
Diaval walked towards you with an uncertain look in his eyes. He seemed distracted, or perhaps deep in thought. You asked because you initially knew something was going on with him since he flew into your room. You watched him intentlyĀ as you dropped the second earring into the tray.Ā
Another soft silence fell between the two of you. This one felt long and slightly uncomfortable. Like there were a million words lingering in the air that needed saying, yet neither of you had spoken them. Not until he was behind you, warmly emitting a familiar heat you had missed so dearly.Ā
Your breath hitched when you felt his hand delicately trail up the sides of your arms, over your shoulders and finally stop behind your neck where you could feel him work at the necklace clasped behind your neck, assisting you with removing the shiny piece of jewelry you detested having to wear all evening.Ā
Truth be told, Diaval didnā€™t even realize he was flying in the direction of the castle until he had all but reached the destination.Ā
Two moons.Ā
He had counted.Ā
He wondered how many more would have to pass until you were able to come home. He had missed how things used to be. The witty banter the two of you shared on a daily basis, the way both of you would worry over Aurora, the times shared convincing Maleficent that Philip was right for her. But the moments he missed most was when you would fly over the headwinds and race each other to the forestā€™s edge. At the thought of how peaceful you once looked back then, he couldnā€™t help but softly smile at you through the mirror.Ā
He remembered one particular moment you two shared while Philip was courting Aurora. The forest creatures had come together to make a beautiful song for the two as they had danced under the moonlight. The sparkling pixies glittered around them as they shared the moment together. He was watching it from afar next to you. Thatā€™s when things had changed for him. He knew that same love that Philip felt for Aurora was the love he felt for you. Though he had no inclination on how to act on it, he knew it was there.
With that thought lingering in his mind for almost a year, he had to admit he had felt a sting when you had so quickly declined his offer to accompany you on your journey. At first he hadnā€™t understood why, but it soon grew increasingly clear when his duties in the Moors picked up with your departure. He was thankful, really. It had kept his mind occupied throughout the day. Instead of worrying about you, he had helped his mistress keep things running smoothly.Ā
ā€œI miss you as well.ā€ He said it so softly you almost missed it. It dawned on you that in all the time you had known him, you hadnā€™t been separated for this long. Part of you felt ashamed for not seeing how this separation may be affecting him. The other part of you was excited that he had missed you just as much as you had missed him.Ā
You turned around, looking him uncertainly in the eye. His eyes were black, the blackest black one could imagine. Yet they always held deep emotion. There he was standing directly in front of you. The man you had missed most from home. You hadnā€™t realized when it happened, but your feelings towards him had changed exponentially. It was further increasing the longer you were away from home. His eyes never left yours, you could feel his breath on your face as you both stood frozen in the moment.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œDo you?ā€ You muster up the courage to say, seemingly trying to continue the banter. It was weak. Your voice was coarse from the way your heart was almost beating out of your chest. By the look on his face, he could tell you were at a loss for words. The rose hue on your cheeks was visible even in the dimly lit room.Ā
ā€œThe Moors arenā€™t the same without you flying overtop them each morning. The sun isnā€™t as warm. The water isnā€™t as serene and the stars aren't as bright. I miss you like a desert misses rain.ā€ He spoke just as softly as he did a moment ago. His hands gripped the vanity on either side of you, fighting the urge to hold you in his arms and finally reach out and hold you. He had waited too long to see you. He thought he could make it until your return, but he had never been more wrong. Worried he may lose his chance, he needed to see you.Ā
ā€œI know that Iā€™m just a raven, not even really a man but--ā€Ā
You couldnā€™t take it any longer. He had drawn you in a long time ago. You placed your hands on either side of his face delicately, moving your soft lips against his. The instant you did, it felt like a dam had broken inside of him and he had finally wrapped his hands around your delicate body, pulling you in as close as he could. Kissing you as if he was about to wake up from a dream, he wasted no time. The time you had spent apart was far too much anyway. You had to make it up somehow.Ā
You pulled back for a moment, searching his dark eyes for any sense of hesitation or regret. There was none there that you could see.Ā
ā€œI missed you too.ā€ You spoke without another second to waste.Ā
With a new-found boost of courage, he plunged forward and captured your lips in another kiss. This one he was more prepared for. You felt your arms trail down to his lapels, pulling him closer to you, not allowing him to stop. Itā€™s not as if you would need to tell him that. Unbeknownst to you, he had no intention to stop. Your mouths moved together in harmony as he held you tightly in his arms. The pace had quickened from your timid peck you had given him just a moment ago. The unfamiliar feeling of his lips against yours didn't frighten you. Instead, you were surprised with how natural tasting him felt. If anyone had seen the two of you together they would, without a doubt, imagine you had done this many times before.Ā
You had realized in this moment, he was your home. So long as he was nearby you felt at ease and safe, Moors or not. As he held you, you grew increasingly more electrified. Every finger graze that trailed passed a part of your skin was magnetic. It had your mind go foggy and your stomach do flips as he deepened the kiss, eliciting a soft moan from your mouth into his.Ā
ā€œDiaval...ā€ you had whispered his name once you had reluctantly pulled back, leaning your forehead against his. The sound of his name slipping past your lips that way was a sound he wanted to hear a million times over. Eagerly, he had placed soft chaste kiss on your lips once more before opening his eyes to look into yours.Ā
ā€œWhat is it? Anything.ā€ He spoke out of breath.Ā
With a soft smile you trailed your hands back up to his soft face, feeling him calm even more at your touch.Ā ā€œItā€™s late.ā€Ā
He blinked a couple of times before realizing that you were right. With a short nod he began to untangle himself from you. ā€œOf course.ā€ he cleared his throat.Ā Ā
You had become confused. Without a second of hesitation you wound your hands around his neck to keep him in place.Ā
ā€œI meant that as an invitation to stay here tonight. You flew all this way.ā€ You assured him that you very much enjoyed his presence. Pulling him back into you, your lips hovered above his for a few moments, seemingly acting like a magnet as he followed them with his own.Ā ā€œFly back tomorrow, stay tonight. Please.ā€Ā
With a request like that, how could he say no? For tonight, you wanted to act selfish. You wanted to think of yourself over what was expected of the two you. You wanted to revel in this happiness forever, but tonight would have to do for now. Tomorrow came with more diplomacy, more treaty talk and more of that without him by your side. You didnā€™t want to marvel in that at the moment. Right now you wanted nothing but him, tonight, right now.Ā
You hadnā€™t felt this at home in a long time.Ā

Your thoughts on the epi?
This episode was everything! I don't remember when I've enjoyed crying so much. The funny thing is, though, that I've found myself crying more while rewatching those scenes, than I cried during the first time I watched the episode. This episode will definitely rank among my favorites. Let's talk about the B and C characters and then get to Edser and, of course, Kiraz at the end. I spent the first 30 minutes resisting the urge to punch my screen anytime Ayfer was on it. Damn, I wanted to slap her silly. Could she have been any more annoying? Eda's a grown woman, if she is finally doing the right thing and telling the father of her child he's a dad, then be supportive instead of a screeching pain in the ass. When she actually said "I told you so" to an upset Eda... seriously? That is awful. What a bitter, joyless, petty individual. I was cheering for Melo every time she told Ayfer she was negative. Good! At least we know the other characters recognize how awful she is.
(I get long winded, so this continues under the cut)
Also what was with her going overboard to protect Burak's feelings over his delusional aspirations? Why shouldn't he understand that Serkan and Eda shared a great love and Melo is rooting for them to rekindle it? What does hiding that from him do? It's still true. Ayfer treats this dude as a member of the family, so he might as well know. I get his feelings might get hurt, but dude needs a reality check and to move on, and no matter how hard Ayfer hopes, Serkan in their lives or no, Eda is never going to want Burak. She's made that clear. If Ayfer likes him so much maybe she should marry him, that way at least Melo would be saved from his milquetoast presence.
Speaking of that, they were clearly trying to establish some sort of connection or vibe between him and Melo. So far, I'm not into it. If he's still so into Eda that Ayfer doesn't want him to have to hear about Eda/Serkan possibly reuniting, then he doesn't deserve Melo. Melo deserves someone who wants her, not someone who pines after someone out of his league and then settles for her bff once he realizes he never had a shot with the great beauty. We'll see how it develops, but he has the personality of damp carpet so I don't have high hopes.
Aydan was a little screechy this episode, but I cut her some slack since she just found out these traitors stole 5 years of her granddaughter's life from her. My friend @echoapothecary made a good point to me that Aydan deserves no sympathy for this since she didn't tell Eda Serkan was alive back in amnesia times, and I don't disagree with that. That move by Aydan pretty much tainted her character forever, and it's near impossible to come back from, but viewing this story in a capsule I do feel sorry for her. She wasn't a good mother to Serkan, but she does love him, and I think she craves family. The main point being, Serkan wasn't the only one who lost something significant by not knowing about Kiraz until now, Aydan did too. Perhaps we can say that losing the first five years of her granddaughter's life is her punishment for keeping the secret about Serkan, it's about as steep a penalty as one could pay. Talk about karmic retribution.
Also, since Serkan is apparently not going to impose any emotional tolls on any of the traitors for the secret that was kept from him, I'm glad Aydan did at least make her displeasure known and made some of the liars uncomfortable. Piril, at least, felt it, even if she won't suffer any real consequences. I kind of wanted Serkan to kick her out of the company. I really don't like that character and I think every time she's on screen she just sucks the life out of the show. Engin when he's in scenes with Serkan or Eda or Melo or Aydan or Erdem = Interesting. Engin when he's with Piril = Zzzzzzz.
Pina and Kerem were cute, but to be honest I really don't care. It's inoffensive and I get that we need B, C and D storylines to fill out two hours each week, so I'm good with it, but let's be real I'm only watching for the main event.
Speaking of... now to EDSER! I actually like that Serkan walked out and drove away after hearing the truth. I can only imagine what kind of shock and betrayal he must have felt at that moment, escaping must have seemed like his best option. What I liked even more is that Eda followed him. What a relief after the last episode where she was looking for any and every excuse not to tell him and then made the nonsensical decision to flee in order to avoid it. Too many times in the past between these two pride has gotten in the way. There was a time that Eda might have thrown up her hands at him leaving and pretended like it didn't hurt, that it didn't matter. I'm so glad those days seem to be over. One of the hallmarks of season 2 has been the improved communication (sans secret) between these two and this episode took that concept to a new level.
How heartbreaking to watch Eda plead with Serkan through the door, and how double-y heartbreaking to watch Serkan sitting on the floor, head bent, clearly in emotional agony. You could feel it coming off of him. Kudos to both Hande and Kerem who KILLED IT this episode. Seriously, their best work to date. Their chemistry is always on point, but the way they flawlessly work off of one another in every scene they share, whether it's deeply dramatic or something light and romantic is truly something special to behold. That's one reason why I don't get the folks who are so hung up in hating the season 2 plotline, that they can't appreciate any of this. Because this is the point. Giving these two artists deep and challenging scenes together and opportunities to make more magic. Watching them this season is honestly a privilege and I plan on enjoying every minute of it.
Despite Serkan's emotional turmoil, it was so like him to put the blanket over her and then sit across from her sleeping form as he indulged in some more brooding. However, I really appreciate that by the morning he was ready to talk to her. That conversation was hard, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who was jarred by him saying that he would have told her to get an abortion. In light of his later confessions, I think there's a few ways to take that. I think it was in part a nod to what an emotional mess he was at the time, and in part he said it to alleviate some of her guilt. Because even a betrayed and hurt Serkan cares so much about her, and he knows what he put who through at the time. Especially because at that moment he still had no plans to tell her the truth about why he broke up with her, he was still playing the part of the man who just didn't want children. So stubborn! Thank goodness that over the course of the next 12 hours he'll change his mind about that...
On another note, how happy did it make you to see Sirius? It made me pretty happy. He lives!!!!
From the moment Eda went to his hotel room the night before to confess all the way until they met again at the hotel, Eda really did everything right in how she approached him. However, once back in Sile, she makes her first critical error. It reminded me of the Eda in episode 29 who started pushing so hard at amnesia!Serkan and coming at him with such extreme emotion that he shut down. And that's what happened during that conversation on the beach. Eda needed to give him a little bit of time to come to terms with things, instead of forcing a conversation the first moment they saw one another. Good grief, what was she doing demanding answers from him hours after he found out? She knows this man! She knows that he plans every aspect of his life. So to spring on him that you hid a child from him for 5 years and he's a dad, is a LOT. I like that in a later scene he knows he reacted badly, and actually also says to her "What did you expect?" While his reaction wasn't great, it was also pretty predictable and she should have known to give him some time.
Speaking of the conversation on the beach, what a powerhouse scene for Hande. One note on it, that was the scene they had just shot when Hande and Kerem did their last IGlive on premiere day. The one where Kerem kept talking about how he was in a mood because of an intense scene they had just done. After watching I couldn't help but note that he, as Serkan, mostly just stood there stoically as Hande did all the emoting as Eda let loose on all the pent up emotion she'd been carrying both for years and with Serkan's fresh rejection. It speaks to both their personal and professional dynamic that he was so affected by her being in that state since he didn't do the heavy lifting in that specific scene. The way they are attuned to each other is probably a big reason they are so flawlessly in sync on screen.
I liked how they weaved the Kiraz/Baba scene in at the right time. That was one instance where Aydan, Seyfi and Engin's meddling was for the good, engineering a situation where Serkan was alone with his daughter. Also excellent comedy from Can, ratting out his dad about throwing ice cream on him. Good stuff. I like Engin-as-a-father scenes, I like Engin-as-a-friend scenes, I could just do without Engin-as-a-husband scenes. Anyway, Serkan needed time to adjust, but he also needed to be exposed to Kiraz so that he could view their prior unlikely bond through the new prism of fatherhood. It's telling how easily he slid into Dad territory with teaching her how to tie her shoes. He had been doing that all along, but at that moment he knew about the relationship and still did what was natural. He is ready to be her father, he just needs to realize he's worthy of it.
You can't blame Eda for not realizing it, but it was lovely to see how quickly Serkan turned the corner. He was already adjusting his thinking not even 24 hours after he found out about Kiraz and that was really what inserting himself
into her dealings with the Italians was about. Staying in contact until he could beat back all his neurosis. As for the business stuff, she apparently needed him as an investor, but I also love the way he was there to first build up her confidence and then praise her after a successful presentation. I've said it before but Serkan as her professional mentor is one of my favorite dynamics between them. It did make me wonder, is she still 45% owner of the Holding? It seems like it, she sure didn't hesitate to present herself as his partner. If she is, though, it seems impossible that they could have had zero contact for all those years, unless she just placed her stake in a trust and gave him full voting control of it. Details I'm sure they won't explore in-depth, but I did wonder.
Don't you just love an unwitting guest character (Italian guy) who comes in and forces our two protagonists to spend extra time together? I do. Thank you Italian guy and Italian guy's wife! I love how quick Serkan was to accept, you see, he had already turned a corner and was looking for excuses to get close to her. It was his first step in his journey to opening up to her. Also, who noticed that Eda wore a slinky blue dress the night after Kiraz mentioned that it's Serkan's favorite color? Just checking. She is not as immune to his charms as she'd like us to believe...
OF COURSE Serkan was at Eda's graduation. I think pretty much the whole fandom had guessed that from their conversation in episode 40, but it still hit me emotionally to have it confirmed. What I really liked about it was that Serkan didn't tip his hand by accident. He quoted her graduation speech specifically because he wanted her to know he was there. And not only that he willingly admits that he thought of her every single day since they parted. This is a huge step for him. It has been driving him crazy that Eda thinks he forgot her and is totally unaffected by her. However, even just a few hours earlier he was still in a place where he had no intention to tell her anything, it's actually impressive how quickly he came around. Now I don't blame Eda at all for declaring it's not enough, he put her through emotional hell when they broke up. I mean on one hand you'd think she'd be able to see that he was already opening his heart and there was more to the story, however, her reaction was good because it spurred him on to go and tell her the whole story.
And what a heartbreaking story it was. As I said several times over the last few weeks, I was hoping that part of Serkan's motivation was that the doctor had told him he would be unable to have kids, what I wasn't expecting though was the double whammy of not being able to have kids AND there being a 70% chance of the cancer coming back. No wonder Serkan was eFFed up! Who wouldn't be, but then you add in his additional insecurities about not being worthy of love and his hypochondria and that is a bad mental cocktail. You know what's ironic, Ayfer hates him but in reality he did exactly what Ayfer would have wanted him to do. Push Eda away for her own good so she could have everything she wants in life without him dragging her down. What makes Ayfer the worst (and a hypocrite) is that this is exactly what she would have wanted him to do, but she also blames him for Eda's heartbreak in the aftermath.
The scene was so cathartic to watch as a viewer. We've been waiting for weeks for Serkan's point of view as he's hidden behind his usual confident and calm veneer, and when we finally got it, we really got it. He did not hold back. Serkan is such a complex character, which is a bit surprising for a silly show that you wouldn't really expect build a character with so many layers. On the surface he has everything and seems to be full of ego, but his arrogance is only surrounding his abilities, intellect, and skills as a businessman and architect. Personally, he has little self-worth and thinks he's not worthy of anyone's love, especially not Eda's. However, while that has been a truth of the character for a long time, this speech was the first time he admitted how deeply rooted his fears are. It was stunning, though, to have a character who is so rooted in being in control and who is worried about his outward image, open up in such a raw way and expose all his fears and insecurities to a woman he's been apart from for five years. It was breathtaking and Kerem was fantastic in the scene.
Initially, with the subtitles, I misinterpreted (though I knew it couldn't be quite right) his parting words. The subtitles I saw made it seem like Serkan was saying "Don't say you forgot me" as in Serkan didn't want Eda to say she forgot him. But it made so much more sense when I saw it translated as "But don't say I forgot you." which was a throw back to their dinner conversation in episode 40 when Eda says, "You forgot me." Once I realized Serkan was saying that he couldn't handle her thinking, or say, that he'd forgotten her, the scene hit doubly hard!
I saw some criticism of that scene that said Eda was just standing there with no emotion, but I didn't get that at all. She had tears running down her face and I thought she was fighting for his soul pretty dang hard. First by using both emotion-- telling him that everything had changed because now he had a daughter and that he'd locked his heart and soul in a cage. Then by using logic-- when she told him the cancer is gone and that's it's over and when she challenged him over why everything has to be perfect. Think from her perspective how disorienting it would be to find out that everything you thought was true, was not, and that if the love of your life wasn't such a stubborn, selfless, self-sabotaging martyr that you could have built a family together instead of been separated for 5 years. It's a lot.
On the first watch this doorway scene is where I started to get emotional, but I didn't really lose it and fully cry until Serkan's scene the next day with Engin. For whatever reason that scene hit me hard. Hats off to Anil for his work there, the way his voice broke at times during that conversation really got to me. This type of true friendship scene was something that was sorely missing during the era of the other writers, and it was wonderful to see it back, just when Serkan needed it most. Serkan needed someone to shake him a bit about his fears of dying. I think the writers did a good job here, because while Serkan's neurosis and self-sabotage is maddening, with his history it's believable that he was stuck in a headspace where he really thought he couldn't be a father to Kiraz, or a partner to Eda, because he might up and die on them. I loved how Engin pointed out that Eda and Kiraz would not be the only ones affected if he died and how ridiculous it was for him to lock himself away.
I'm glad we got the scene with the doctor to really get a full glimpse of Serkan's view of his illness and it's also a relief to not only Serkan, but to us viewers that since five years have passed cancer-free he now has the risk of a typical healthy person. Serkan isn't the only one who has hang ups about his health, I think after amnesia and cancer viewers do too!
Finding out that Eda had made videos specifically for Serkan over the years, talking to him directly, hit hard. I wasn't really expecting that. I thought maybe she just had general photos and videos, like any doting parent would have, but the fact that she was always wanting him, documenting Kiraz's life and preparing for a day when he would hopefully take his place as Kiraz's father... wow. On the cynical side it makes it that much harder to believe that she never made more of an effort to tell him once Kiraz was born, but I won't focus on that. Not when the scene was as perfect as it was. Kerem again was stellar, he made me cry buckets. I think since amnesia many of us wanted an emotional response from him, thank goodness this story finally delivered it. The emotions running through him at that moment were overwhelming and Kerem did a fantastic job of portraying all of them, the heartbreak over everything he missed, the joy at seeing moments
from his daughter's life, the regret of not being there and being the partner Eda needed, the pride in the job Eda did in raising their daughter alone, and finally the bittersweet relief that Eda never forgot him.
It was a lot, but it was a good segue to the next scene when Eda calls him frantic because Kiraz went missing. What was clear from those videos was that while Eda, when we first meet her in Sile, appeared on the surface to have everything handled as a single mom, she always really wanted to have Serkan there as her partner. While Kiraz was pining for her dad, Eda was pining for Serkan as well. And we see this displayed in full force when Serkan arrives. Several people try to comfort Eda, including Burak, but she's not having it. However, as soon as Serkan gets there you can almost see the relief hit her in a wave. She's not in this alone anymore. Kiraz's father is there to help. Even if nothing is settled at that moment, she knows she can rely on Serkan and that he will know what to do. Which is supported by the fact that he clearly took charge the moment he found out, calling the authorities, having them begin searches etc.
But while highlighting his competence, conversely can we talk about how incompetently everyone else was at searching for Kiraz? They all acted worried, but did any of them make any real effort to find her? LMAO, they all seemed much more concerned with their own personal dramas. Especially egregious were Engin and Piril. Hello! Your son is clearly trying to tell you where the missing person is! Stop ignoring him. Thank goodness Serkan is very good at finding people.
Of course he found her and our hearts collectively shattered as we watched her trying to send a message to her Baba in space when in reality he was kneeling right there beside her, helping her tie the note to the balloon. If anything else was left to convince Serkan that he is wanted and needed, by both Eda and Kiraz, this situation was it. Even though some careless crew member spoiled the astronaut suit in an unnecessary IG story from the set, (that would have been a really good surprise) it was still satisfying to see this fairy tale play out. Never over "Baba?" and "Happy Birthday, my daughter" and now I can't wait to see Kiraz's reaction that her new friend Serkan Bolat is actually her dad and it should be pretty great to watch the three of them form a family together.
Overall this was the most emotional episodes of the series, and also one of the best.

Merlin & Arthurā€™s friendship: clichĆ©s versus reality (Part III)
Tumblr media
Following on from Merlin & Arthurā€™s friendship: clichĆ©s versus reality Part I and Part II, hereā€™s Part III.
CLAIM 5 #: Merlin thinks fighting is meaningless violence
Merlin certainly claimed it-- but his actions told a different story.Ā
It took me a long time to understand that Merlin was in fact very similar to Arthur. This realisation came while rewatching episodes 5x03 and 5x04 in particular; in the latter episode, Merlin admitted to Arthur that if someone had murdered his father, he would probably have sought vengeance. Yet we know that Merlin hated vengeance, and that he had physically intervened to stop Arthur from yielding to said vengeance.Ā
This led me to see how Arthur and Merlinā€™s friendship became a coping mechanism to deal with the loss of their respective family (literally and figuratively).Ā Ā
One key way that Merlin is similar to Arthur is that he, too, pretends not to like something in public, while his actions speak differently.Ā
Hence why Merlin loved claiming that fighting was pointless, that it was just ā€œsweaty men knocking the sense out of each otherā€ (episode 4x09), and appeared not to enjoy training sessions. Episode 1x02 had a hilarious and undoubtedly genuine example of Merlin abhorring the art of war, as he struggled to hold his weaponry, tripped, tumbled, and probably ended up with tinnitus!Ā ā€œDā€™you you hear clanging?ā€
I used to think this change occurred much later, but episode 1x02 showed Merlin eagerly watching the tournament just one day after he complained about having to learn more fighting techniques and about being Arthurā€™s servant.Ā
Also, after being pilloried for being clumsy with Arthurā€™s armour, the first thing Merlin did was to seek Gwenā€™s assistance. Look how proud he was later, when he put everything on correctly. ā€œThat was much better,ā€ Arthur said, to which Merlin responded, ā€œIā€™m a fast learner.ā€Ā
This suggests that, being a resourceful person who lands on his feet, Merlin quickly realised that he would have to learn about warfare if he was to make his way in Camelot.Ā
I already have a lengthy post proving that Merlin had excellent capabilities in battle, and that Arthur had potentially trained him better than his knights. See the link below this post.Ā
However, the greatest evidence that Merlin respected the art of war was his insistence that Arthur stand up and fight to reclaim Camelot. This occurred chiefly in episode 3x13, when Arthur was discouraged by Morganaā€™s treachery, and in episode 4x13, when Arthur completely lost hope and abdicated the throne.Ā
In both episodes, Merlin helped take back Camelot not only using magic, but also with the sword. Notice that in episode 3x13, Sir Lancelot never questioned Merlinā€™s ability with a sword. Instead, he was impressed by its powers. As far as Lancelot was concerned, Merlin was ā€œthe one Arthur should knight. Youā€™re the bravest of us all and he doesnā€™t even know it.ā€ So Lancelot knew that Merlin was a capable fighter, and would embodyĀ the noble warrior so admired in Camelot.Ā
Ironically, Lancelot did not live to see Merlin dressed as a knight in 4x05 during the mission to trap King Caerleon.Ā
Of course, we have an example from Merlinā€™s own mouth: ā€œYouā€™re a great warrior,ā€ he said to Arthur in episode 1x13. In episode 3x01, he was impressed by Arthur fighting blindfolded against two opponents, though he quickly tried pretending that he had ā€œseen betterā€. In episode 3x04, he laughed at Dagrā€™s threats against Arthur: ā€œIā€™d like to see you try!ā€ Then he tried persuading Gwaine to stay in Camelot on the basis that, ā€œYou and Arthur: you fought well together.ā€ During that episode, Merlin was impressed by Gwaineā€™s fighting before and during the mĆŖlĆ©e.Ā
In episode 5x05, he watched Arthur duelling against Mordred unarmed, then stood up to applaud the king. We can safely assume this occurred many times, since Merlin attends all training sessions and is responsible for maintaining all of Arthurā€™s armour. Many scenes, such as in episodes 4x05, 4x09, and 5x03, show him either polishing or putting on Arthurā€™s armour.Ā
So why all of Merlinā€™s dismissive comments? For one thing, he didnā€™t like the braggadocio and arrogance of many knights-- or those who would wish to be knights. Hence why he called Valiant a ā€œcreepā€ in episode 1x02, much to Arthurā€™s amusement. Secondly, he did not see the point of certain tournaments, such as that of episode 3x11. It didnā€™t help that Arthur said, ā€œThe only rule is: there are no rules.ā€ Thirdly, the death toll alarmed him. ā€œCause last time this tournament was held, three men died... That was just on the first day.ā€ (Also episode 3x11.)Ā
Another reason that hit me while rereading this: Merlin wasnā€™t naturallyĀ good at fighting. Remember that Arthur said,Ā ā€œIā€™ve been trained to kill since birth.ā€ (Episode 1x01) This suggests some natural talent on his part, though greatly improved with hard work. Meanwhile, Merlin not only fumbled with weaponry, but faced merciless teasing from Arthur about his lack of skill. To compensate for his feelings of incompetence, Merlin linked Arthurā€™s fighting prowess to his arrogance:Ā ā€œHow long have you been training to be a prat?ā€ (Episode 1x01)Ā
While he had a good point, it was also a way to dismiss his inexperience with fighting and other facts of life. We have to remember that he came from a tiny, poor village. Camelot could have been another planet.Ā
Despite all this, when it came to watching Arthur train, watching Arthur train his knights, and, most importantly, fighting to defend Camelot, Merlin had nothing but respect for the art of war.Ā
CLAIM #6: Arthur (mostly/always) needed Merlin to make big decisions
Untrue, as the following examples will demonstrate.
By the way, Merlin helped fuel this idea that his decisions were necessary for Arthurā€™s rule. In episode 4x11, he asked Gaius whether he should do anything to cause Arthur and Gwenā€™s reconciliation. Gaius rightly asked, ā€œYou donā€™t think thatā€™s a little arrogant?ā€Ā
In episode 3x07, Arthur decided to rescue Gwenā€™s brother-- a complete stranger-- from the Castle of Fyrien. Just one episode later, he succeeded at the majority of his quest in the Perilous Lands despite being enchanted to lose his energy. Needless to say, the choice of retrieving the trident of the Fisher King was Arthurā€™s alone, made after a night of contemplation.Ā
Another great example comes from episode 4x05, where Arthur repented of his wrongdoing to Caerleon and his kingdom, and refused to make his men risk their lives on his account. He then took matters into his own hands, pleading with Queen Annis to invoke the right of single combat.Ā
In episode 4x06, Arthur only told a few people that he was riding through the Valley of the Fallen Kings. Merlin wasnā€™t one of those people, hence why he said, ā€œArthur. You are not serious...Nothing good ever happens in the Valley of the Fallen Kings. Nobody in their right mind would go in there.ā€Ā
How come Merlin didnā€™t know? Arthur said, ā€œThe routes are secret, Merlin: thatā€™s why *we* chose it.ā€Ā Emphasis my own. Later, we discover that Arthur had discussed this with his council, a select number of knights, and Agravaine.Ā
My favourite example comes from episode 4x11. Arthur negotiated with a longstanding rival, Nemeth, over the status of the lands of Gedref. We cannot underestimate that achievement. Arthur said that the lands have ā€œlong been in disputeā€, and when he announced the end of their negotiations, the knights looked extremely nervous. Arthur had to allay their fears by calling it a ā€œfair and honourable agreementā€. That may have been a polite way of saying that they had avoided humiliating sacrifices and war.Ā
On top of that, Arthur sealed the treaty by securing an engagement to the Princess of Nemeth-- exactly the kind of political savvy that his father had encouraged. ā€œYour marriage should have been used to form an alliance with another kingdomā€¦ā€ (Episode 5x03.)
The first thing Merlin said was,Ā ā€œHow come I didnā€™t know any of this? How come you didnā€™t say anything?ā€ I will not go into why Merlinā€™s reaction here was presumptuous and arrogant, but we can see that Arthur deliberately kept this information from Merlin to avoid disagreement and argument.Ā
Of course, the great episodes 5x01 and 5x02 show Arthur risking everything to save his men ā€œor die tryingā€, because to do otherwise would be to sacrifice his beliefs. In episode 5x04, Arthur decided to rescue King Rodor from King Odin, in spite of the immense danger and the holes in Princess Mithianā€™s story. In episode 5x05, he decided to beg the Disir for Mordredā€™s life, because he did not want another innocent man dying on his behalf.Ā
And so on.Ā

4x10: Heaven and Hell
Then:
Tumblr media
TFW needed a little work before they got it right
Now:
We start off right where we left off in the last episode. The angels are here for Anna. She has to die.
Tumblr media
Uriel attacks Ruby and Dean tries to stop it. Cas starts walking towards Sam, and despite Samā€™s pleas, he boops him into unconsciousness. Suddenly thereā€™s lights and Uriel and Cas are zapped to places unknown. (Casā€™s wings in the flash...emotion hearts). They find Anna with a ridiculously severe wrist wound and a mysterious sigil on the mirror written in her blood. She sent them away.Ā
Tumblr media
They hide Anna away at Bobbyā€™s. Dean and Ruby bond over hex bags. Itā€™s almost cute.
Um, Bobbyā€™s not home because heā€™s in the Dominican (and I just Googled ā€œHedonism and Dominicanā€ ... probably shouldnā€™t have). Anyway, Samā€™s got exposition on Anna. This bought of psychosis isnā€™t her first. When she was a toddler, she was convinced her real father was ā€œvery mad -- like wanted-to-kill-her mad.ā€ Anna interrupts their little chat.Ā
Sam asks her why the angels want her. She has no clue. Sheā€™s upset that her parents are dead and her life has been turned upside-down. They need to find out what her deal is.Ā
Enter PAM!Ā
Tumblr media
(I know Iā€™m technically not supposed to like that bit of sexual harassment but her exchange with Sam is SO funny and cute. Heā€™s so earnest and they play the victim card with her, but she ainā€™t having it and sheā€™s going to have some fun at Samā€™s expense.Ā  And Deanā€™s smile at the end, JOY.)Ā
Pam introduces herself to Anna and sets to hypnotizing her. She asks about Annaā€™s father and Anna freaks out. Dean tries intervening and gets knocked out. Pam wakes her and Anna remembers who she is. ā€œIā€™m an angel.ā€Ā
Pam and Ruby are side-eyeing this ā€œfriendlyā€ angel. Turns out Anna was Cas and Urielā€™s boss in angel-land. She disobeyed, which is the worst thing an angel can do (WEEPS for future Cas.) She ripped out her grace and fell to Earth. Now Heaven and Hell want her. Sheā€™s determined to get her grace back.Ā
Tumblr media
ā€œSo youā€™e just going to take some devine bong hit, and shazam, youā€™re Roma Downey?ā€ Ah, Dean, you do have a way with words (Also, dude loves pop culture SO much that Touched By an Angel is on his radar. BLESS THIS BOY.)Ā
Sam remembers reading about a meteor about 9 months before Anna was born and Ruby responds, ā€œYouā€™re pretty buff for a nerd.ā€ Get a room, you two.)Ā
For Real Life Jesus Theyā€™re Cute Science:
Tumblr media
Ruby apologizes for getting Sam involved with this war. Sheā€™s afraid of Alistair too. Heā€™s no joke in Hell. She tells Sam he should send Alistair back to Hell, but heā€™s got to practice to do it. Sam refuses.Ā
Annaā€™s star gazing when Dean returns from taking Pamela home. Dean asks Anna why the angels saved him. Dean then asks why she would want to be human. He lists all the bad things about the human condition, and she lists all the good.Ā
Tumblr media
Ultimately, itā€™s the emotions of being human that matter so much to her. Obedience and emotionless faith is overrated. Only 4 angels have ever laid eyes on God (Well...five now!) Anna complains about watching over Earth, waiting for order from a father who might never return, and Dean laughs and laughs. I really love how Annaā€™s story shifted to Cas. Dean and Anna give each other looks, but Sam, in all his glory, interrupts. Heā€™s found something!
They head off for a tree in Kentucky that is probably the place where Annaā€™s grace fell.Ā
Tumblr media
They get to the tree and Anna can sense that itā€™s not there anymore. Someone took it.Ā
Tumblr media
Later, Annaā€™s listening to Angel Radio and hears the angels say that if the Winchesters donā€™t turn over Anna, theyā€™ll throw Dean back in Hell. Dean is speechless, but Sam wants to know what kind of weapon works on an angel. Deanā€™s in freak out mode --they need to find an answer.Ā
Later, Deanā€™s reading a book by flashlight and Anna approaches him to thank him for all that theyā€™ve done. He brushes her sentiment aside. She ponders the thought that she doesnā€™t deserve to be saved (AND I need to stop and talk about how this parallels Cas in Purgatory...he thanks Dean for everything, he believed he didnā€™t deserve to be saved. BLAF. And Dean and Anna are more canon than Dean and Cas? I think not.)
Dean lets slip that thereā€™s something he deeply regrets as well, and Anna takes the opportunity to reveal that she knows what he did last summer - er, in Hell. He crumbles when she tells him to forgive himself. (Narrator voice: and then he spent ten more years failing to do exactly that.)Ā
Tumblr media
ā€œYou are not alone,ā€ she tells him and I remember why I like her (before a later plot twist scrubs her away). Anna MAKES A MOVE and kisses him. It IS their last night on Earth, after all. (I quietly eat the script pages for ā€œFree to be you and meā€ while simultaneously high-fiving Anna for her excellent taste.)Ā
Cut to a montage of Impala sex which cuts out all the bits of sex in a car where youā€™re crammed in a corner awkwardly trying to get off your clothes without kicking the other person. Anna touches Castielā€™s handprint, laying her own over the lines of his fingerprints. And I know that it was likely just a way to set up the Dean-is-connected-to-Heaven parallels in this brief shining moment when both boys actually had non-dead love interests at the same time. But MAN it sure cuts me open now.Ā
Tumblr media
Ruby watches Sam sleep, then heads out to a crossroads. She burns her protective hex bag and Alistair appears.Ā
Tumblr media
Ruby offers to give up Anna in return for her and the Winchestersā€™ safety. Alistair has another proposalā€¦
Uriel greets Dean back in the barn. Dean looks confused for a moment before he realizes that Uriel has invaded his dream so they can have a little chat. Commander Cas isnā€™t around - ā€œYou see, he has this weakness. He likes you.ā€ Uriel reveals that he has Annaā€™s grace. But nya nya nya he wonā€™t give it back.Ā
We cut to Ruby, naked and strapped down as this show is wont to do with its demon women. Alistair tortures her with the demon knife. She refuses to tell him where Anna is...but she will show him.
Back in the barn during waking hours, Dean drinks his feelings until the doors burst open and Uriel and Castiel arrive.
Tumblr media
Sam demands to know how the angels found them, and Castiel glances meaningfully at Dean.Ā
Tumblr media
Anna realizes the deal that must have been brokered: herself in exchange for Samā€™s safety. We experience many sad close-ups of Deanā€™s self-hatred and it HURTSSSS. Anna kisses Dean and assures him that heā€™s forgiven.
Tumblr media
Annaā€™s ready to face the angels at last. Cas apologizes, but she brushes it aside. ā€œYou donā€™t know the feeling.ā€ First of all, Anna, rude.
For This Town Ainā€™t Big Enough for the Both of Us Science:
Tumblr media
Alistair shows up in the barn with his demon goons. The Winchesters, Anna, and Ruby skedaddle to the fringes of the barn, leaving the angels and demons to posture toxically at each other.Ā
Fisticuffs ensue! Alistair pins Cas, growling Latin at him until Dean whacks him in the head. Anna takes advantage of the fight to have her Ariel moment.
Tumblr media
She orders everyone to close their eyes as her own fire consumes her. It blasts Alistair away, and Castiel gently pulls Uriel away as well. Everyone congratulates themselves for their excellent plan to pit the demons and angels against each other.Ā
Later, Sam and Dean recap their feelings at the Impala.Ā
For Rural Roads Science:
Tumblr media
Dean brings up something Alistair said during the fight - that he ā€œhad promise.ā€ I finally remember during this rewatch that Deanā€™s been denying what happened in Hell all along. Dean starts to talk. ā€œIt wasnā€™t four months,ā€ he begins. ā€œIt was more like forty years. They sliced and carved and tore at me in ways that you-- Until there was nothing left. And then suddenly I would be whole again. Like magic. Alistair at the end of every day - every one - he would come over . He would make me an offer to take me off the rack if I put souls on. If I started to torture. And every day I told him to stick it where the sun shines. For thirty years, I told him. But then I couldnā€™t do it anymore, Sammy.ā€
Tumblr media
ā€œI got off that rack - god help me I got right off it - and I started ripping ā€˜em apart.ā€ The weight of the torture he inflicted presses down on him. Sam tries to reassure him, but Dean continues to rip out our hearts and leave them cold and gathering refuse in the gutter. ā€œHow I feel? This inside me. I wish I couldnā€™t feel anything, Sammy. I wish I couldnā€™t feel a damn thing.ā€
Dean Quotechester Deserved Better:
Any chance I can dick over an angel, I'm taking it
What do they want me for? Why did they save me?Ā
Feelings are overrated, if you ask me
When you got Godzilla and Mothra on your ass, best to get out of their way and let them fight
I wish I couldn't feel anything, Sammy. I wish I couldn't feel a damn thing

Longing - Roman Godfrey (Hemlock Grove)
Kay, so, Iā€™ve been rewatching Hemlock Grove recently and holy shit...Iā€™ve never wanted someone to literally eat me alive more than Roman Godfrey. I have issuesā„¢
Itā€™s Roman Godfrey...18+
~~~~~~~~~~
You looked down the hall of the school, feeling hurt.
You genuinely felt like you and Roman had a connection, talking all the time and flirting with each other. But you were currently witnessing Roman sucking face with some bleach blonde Barbie at her locker.
Rachel, probably the sweetest girl in the whole town and kind of a suck up. She wasnā€™t the type of girl that Roman usually went for, but he had been known to never step down from a challenge.
It was fine...it was fine. But what you didnā€™t understand was ever since he got into a relationship with Rachel, heā€™d ignore you...after being friends for years.
You two knew almost everything about each other, even all the family drama. You just didnā€™t understand how the person who youā€™ve been closest to could just up and ditch you like that.
Maybe he just got tired of you...everyone else had. So, why would Roman be any different?
You sighed and closed your locker door, slamming it a bit too hard. It got the attention of Roman, who quickly noticed your sour attitude.
You ignored his questioning gaze and walked out of the front double doors of the school, trying to be excited about spring break.
You immediately went to your dealer after school, wanting to get fucked up and forget all about Roman and his new, perfect girlfriend.
Your usual order was a couple grams of weed, but you had a gut feeling that you were gonna need something a bit stronger than grass to temporarily soothe your heartache. It was stupid, really stupid...but you bought MDMA. Just a couple pills.Ā
It was also kinda out of curiosity too.
You had heard of one of the other rich kids throwing a party to kick off spring break. Even if Roman was there, you wanted to go and have some fun.
You went home and quickly got dressed up.
You werenā€™t really the type to dress up fancy, usually just wearing casual clothes, sweaters, blue jeans and such. But you wanted to feel sexy, just once.
You decided on a short black dress that was flowy at the bottom and pushed up your girls slightly, some fishnet tights and your favorite platform boots that had some gems on the tips.
You curled your hair slightly and attempted to do a smoky eye. It was kind of a success? You hoped so at least.
Looking at yourself in the mirror, you almost hoped that Roman would be at this stupid party.
You planned on heading to the party about an hour after it officially started.
You carefully made a couple joints for the party, putting the pills in a little container. Crushing up some more weed, you put it in your bowl that Roman bought for you. Sighing at the memory, you put your lighter to the bowl.
After taking a few puffs, you could already start to feel more relaxed and a little ditzy.
You smiled for the first time today, you fucking loved drugs.
An hour later, you were completely stoned, giggling at absolutely everything. But you started to walk to the party, stumbling along the way occasionally.
From down the road, you could already hear the booming base from the unnecessarily loud music and the chatter of drunken young adults.Ā Ā
To think, this might be one of the last high school party youā€™ll ever go to besides the probable end of senior year party. You suddenly felt old even though you still 18.
You chuckled seeing a couple people throwing up in the bushes outside front entrance.Ā ā€œTake it easy, lads!ā€ You teased, earning a couple middle fingers thrown your way.
You quickly noticed the red convertible in the driveway, suddenly feeling the buzz of your high retreat back.Ā ā€œGreat...ā€
Upon entering the house, your eyes trained on Roman and Rachel in the corner, her sitting on his lap on the crowded living room couch.
Roman saw you too, all dressed up in the fashion that was unusual for you to wear.
You rolled your eyes, heading to the alcohol bar and making your own cocktail of vodka and orange juice.
Chugging the first cup was a bad idea, the vodka burning your throat. But you made another cup anyway.
You took your first pill and it definitely didnā€™t take long for it to kick in.Ā ā€œFuck...ā€ You laughed, feeling happier than usual, almost tearing up at the feeling.
A song you loved came on the speakers, feeling the melody in you soul. You needed to dance.
You shoved yourself in between all the sweaty dancing bodies, letting yourself let go and sway to the beat.
You suddenly felt hands on your hips.
You looked back over you shoulder, seeing a familiar. Some guy from your English class. He wasnā€™t really your type, but you really couldnā€™t really care less. The hands on your hips slowly making their way south made you feel like you were on fire, despite it not being the hands you wanted.
Unbeknownst to you, Roman was watching intensely. His face felt hot with rage. He did not like what he was seeing.
The girl on his lap was kissing his neck, trying to turn him on. But all that was on his mind was beating the shit out of the guy who was putting his hands all over you.
He really thought dating Rachel would get you jealous enough to make a move, but apparently it didnā€™t work. He sighed, he had to do something.
The push it took for him to finally do that was when he saw the guy you were with lead you up stairs of the house. Roman could already sense the hard on that the piece of shit of a male had.
No.
He wasnā€™t gonna let you get manhandled by that nobody on his watch, didnā€™t matter if you wanted it. You were his and that was that.
Meanwhile, you were currently getting a hickey from this random guy in a spare room in this rich kidā€™s house. You felt nether regions heat up with desire.Ā ā€œRoman...ā€ You accidently moaned out, then suddenly feeling the pleasure on your neck stop.
You opened your eyes to see the guy had been pulled off you harshly, being shoved to the floor by a tall man.Ā ā€œYou heard her you shitheel, she wants me. Not you.ā€
ā€œRoman?ā€ You gasped.
ā€œGet the fuck outta here.ā€ Roman yelled at the fallen guy, who immediately listened and rushed out the room.
Roman turned around to see you glaring at him.Ā ā€œWhat the fuck, Y/N?ā€
You scoffed.Ā ā€œWhereā€™s your girlfriend?ā€ You spat.
Roman rolled his eyes.Ā ā€œWhat the fuck are you on, huh?ā€ He asked, completely ignoring your pettiness.
ā€œWhatā€™s it to you?ā€
Roman sighed.Ā ā€œAlright, letā€™s take you home.ā€ He gently grabbed your arm, pulling you up from the bed.
ā€œGet your fucking hands off me, Godfrey.ā€ You pulled away, but you went along with him anyway, not really interested in getting carried to his car.
ā€œMDMA, huh? Thought you only smoked weed.ā€ Roman smirked, keeping his eyes on the road.
ā€œRachel, huh? Thought you only went for cunts.ā€ You retorted.
ā€œI was trying to make you jealous.ā€
You swore your heat almost skipped a beat, but you tried to keep your cool.Ā ā€œWell, it didnā€™t work.ā€ You crossed your arms.Ā ā€œYou couldā€™ve just told me, Roman.ā€
ā€œWhereā€™s the fun in that?ā€ Roman chuckled, scratched the back of his neck.
You sighed heavily, feeling the high coming down. It was bothersome, but you currently wanted to be sober.
Roman glanced at you, seeing your dress was slowly riding up your thighs. He licked his lips.Ā ā€œYou know, when I saw you in that dress, all I wanted was to rip it off you.ā€
You felt shivers down your spine, already feeling that familiar desire fill you.Ā ā€œOh yeah? Tell me more.ā€
Roman smirked.Ā ā€œYou should be fuckingā€™ ashamed, dressing that like. Making me feel all sorts of things. You wore it just to get me all riled up, huh? And those tight, fuck...ā€
You exhaled shakily when you saw Roman turn onto the road that led to his house.Ā ā€œMm, please hurry Roman. I donā€™t know how much longer I can wait for you.ā€ You chuckled nervously.
You almost jolted back when Roman sped up the car. He took one hand off the steering wheel, placing it on your thigh and kneading the meat. Slowly but surely trailing up to your inner thigh.
You opened up so he could have better access, and he put his fingers moved your underwear to the side, hastily rubbing tight circular motions on your bundle of nerves.
You moaned out his name, gripping onto the seat below you as he worked his magic.Ā ā€œYouā€™re so fucking wet for me already, huh?ā€ Roman chuckled, already feeling himself stiffen.
But your pleasure had to come to a temporary end when his large mansion finally came into view.
Roman quickly lead you into his house, making a snide comment to Olivia before leading you up the staircase with haste.
ā€œYouā€™re not gonna walk right for a month after Iā€™m through with you.ā€ Roman said lowly, making you even more excited.
ā€œIā€™m looking forward to it.ā€
Since ya like experimenting (I think): Headcanons for The Phantom (from the 1989 movie) and a Reader who takes Christine's place in the story?
Ahhh yes! Dude this movie was interesting and I loved Robert as a more horror-based version of Eric. I will do my absolute best for you and I hope this is close to what you wanted! ā™” 'Composer by day, serial killer by night'. After rewatching it, I popped tf off and I am not sorry.Ā
Tumblr media
Christine had been a gift to the opera house, he was her teacher, her angel of music. She felt something for him, but once she knew who he was, what he was, she wanted to be as far from him as she possibly could. Eric would have retaliated badly if it weren't for an odd glimmer in the crowd that caught his eye, but maybe it was nothing. He was distraught by his beloved's outburst. Maybe she just needed time and maybe he did too, but no matter how enraged he felt by Christine's rejection, there was still something that perplexed him.
You were in awe of those who were on stage ever since you were a young child, you had always wanted to perform, but the fear of becoming something like that, it was amazing and terrifying. You'd walk the empty halls there sometimes, singing the composed words the stage held previously, the beautiful melodies resounding in your mind. It wasnā€™t quite possible to do since your family had no status to get in good graces with the right people, but you were happy enough to afford the opera with your family when you could. It was the only thing that really kept you going through life.Ā
This evening after the show, which was a complication on its own, you had once again taken your usual routine to walk the empty halls to admire the architectural beauties and play pretend, if only for a little while. Your humming turned to full-on singing a tune as you looked up at the wonders of the stage, imagining what it would be like to be where the greats have stood. You imagined a beautiful ensemble to wear upon that golden stage, the bright lights shining down on you, filling you with a warmth that overtook you.
Your thoughts were short-lived as the sound of an organ took over and filled the room with the melody of the song you sang, chills running up your arms as you fell into the soul of the music. You sang along louder this time, picking up where you left off as you mindlessly belted out the words. If only you could see who had been playing so beautifully! The music they played felt so passionate, so beautiful. As much as you were enjoying this shared moment between this mysterious stranger, you longed to know their identity to praise their musical abilities.Ā
As the tune ended and you smiled wide to yourself, your eyes scanned the room for the person who accompanied you in the grand theater, but no one was there. "Please," you'd call out, "let me see you. Your playing was incredible." They would remain silent as you continued on, rambling off until either they revealed themselves or you found them. You never would have guessed the Opera Ghost was incredibly real, but those were all just stories made up to spook the people who would wander the halls alone.Ā
You were resilient, you wouldn't give up to see the person who played so beautifully, so filled with pain, but he wouldn't show himself. "Iā€™m afraid you cannot see me," the voice echoed hauntingly, ā€œyou will be afraid.ā€ His words were pained and sincere, but he didnā€™t know you and he surely didnā€™t know how you would react to someone like him. You were confident that you could withstand the sight of someone like the Phantom. Again, you urged him to reveal himself, and he secretly adored your tenaciousness, but he was still wary, still hurting, he couldnā€™t bear to scare you away. He couldnā€™t take it again, he wouldnā€™t know how heā€™d react to it, but you were aloneā€¦
He circled you without giving away his position, his eyes upon you like a lion keeping its prey within its gaze as he watches your every move. The way your chest rose with each breath, but your breathing was steady despite being in such a dangerous situation, he was intrigued with you. Your eyes wandered, no idea of the real threat lurking around you. Eric was slowly becoming more and more interested in you, the memory of Christine still fresh but fading, because you were here. He was so tempted to call you to him like he would have for the singer, to pull you into the depths where he poured his heart and soul into his music, where he could feel at ease with himself. Whether you would accept him or not, that didn't bother him, not now. All that mattered right now was this moment.Ā
"If you see me, do you promise not to run?" He asked, his words soft-spoken as you noticed his words had sounded closer. You whipped your head around, searching, the acoustics of the room were throwing you off, but you kept on searching until it led you behind the curtains and within the darkness. Here was where you would have your first brush with the phantom and the sense of excitement that you had never felt before, but that wouldn't be the only time you would feel the thrill. "I promise," you would say shyly, unable to hide the smile that grew across your face.Ā
When you had seen a glimpse of him, his cape fluttered around his legs as he stood a safe distance away from you, mainly for his own regard and how he was feeling. "What's your name?" He asked you, his voice deep and soothing. You immediately didn't know what to say or how to say it, but you had to start with your name. "Y/N," you responded as you tilted your head to the side, unable to hide your excitement. He noted the way your face lit up and he could see you in a new light the more he spoke to you, and all he wanted was to show you his music and hear you sing his words. "Your voice is quite beautiful, Y/N," he said sweetly, "have you ever thought of singing professionally?" The mere thought of it made your stomach twist and you felt the butterflies within you start to dance. "I've thought about it," you responded carefully.Ā
Eric wanted so desperately to take you under his wing and teach you to become the best of yourself, to see you take flight with his music, oh it would be a dream. He would make sure not to fail you like he did with Christine, he would be more careful this time around. If you'd agree, things would be different. You had been self-taught, the things you needed now would be discipline and direction. He could teach you these things. "What if i said I could make that happen for you? Become your teacher, help you spread your wings and fly?" The thought of it was insane! Could he really do this for you and make you into a star? Whatever he had done, whatever magic he cast, you fell hard for it and nodded your head eagerly. "Yes, please, I want nothing more," you cried out in excitement, your hands clasped together. "Please, who are you? Are you the Phantom? I'm not afraid, you know."Ā
That's when Eric couldn't help but press forward to see you closer, he wanted to show you just what you would get into if you were to train with someone like him, although he was still terrified to scare you off. The light hit him just right and you had seen his eye, his beautiful orb staring at you, the other half of his face covered by some sort of scarf. 'So mysterious,' you thought. Either way, his presence didn't invoke fear, he brought you an odd sense of comfort.Ā  He held out his hand to you, offering for a reason you wanted to take so desperately, you needed this, otherwise, it may never happen again. You hesitated, naturally, but with a deep breath and placed your delicate hand in his gloved one, a growl of satisfaction emerged from his mouth as he pulled you close to him. You could now smell him, earthly, smoke, and a waft of something soft. You could smell that and die with a smile on your face. Eric was feeling quite similar, that familiar bubbly feeling happening within the pit of his stomach, almost like when he was with Christine. He wouldn't hide things from you, in due time, you'd know all there was to know about Eric Destler.Ā
When he pulled you down into the darkness of the underground, beneath the opera floors, you weren't expecting another world down there. He had made it his home, although it had been partially destroyed from an accident. He was making do with how things were, though he was still distraught, you could tell with the way he carried himself. Once he removed the wrapping on his face, you were amazed by him, not frightened as he said you would be, and you took a bolder step like no one else had before. Your hand was placed on him, cupping his cheek as he looked at you with surprise, not expecting a beautiful creature like you to show him any affection of any kind. He gasped, his eyes watered as he closed them quickly, afraid to show you just how weak he was for your touch and just how we had wished Christine would have accepted him like this. He would die protecting you, there was no doubt now. You smiled at him, happy to see him feel at ease with you.Ā
Your days were spent training with him, teaching you to sing until you were able to become an understudy for the diva herself if it was possible with everything that had happened. You knew Eric was different from the moment you laid your eyes on him, but it didn't bother you in the slightest, all people were unique in their own way and that never bothered you. He would give you longing glances as you read the sheet music to his works, touched by how beautifully written they had been, the music touched a part of you that was only brought out within the depths of under the opera house. You and Eric had slowly begun to feel comfortable around each other, though you took quicker to the situation than he had, hile was always on edge and somewhat distant. You didn't blame him, especially when you found out about his former student, whom he felt so much love and affection for. It was difficult for him to mention her because he felt that there would always be a part of himself with her, but he was doubting that now with you here.Ā Maybe having him as your dark angel wouldn't be so bad.
Askplosion #12 4/4:
(I would like to state for future reference that, while I do not mind long/multi-part asks, if youā€™d like to engage in actual discussion with me over a non-Miraculous topic, my DMs - Tumblr Messenger - should be open; I lost pieces of three multi-part asks this time just due to Tumblr not sending the remaining part(s) so yeah, I just wanted to make that clear)
(like, this askplosion ended up being super long because of this section and thatā€™s not really what I want to have going on since Iā€™m supposed to be a primarily Miraculous blog; I donā€™t want to have to stop answering non-Miraculous related asks but I might have to if this keeps up:)
What are your experiences with some really rude anons?
Itā€™s partly my fault when it happens. Like Iā€™ve said before, Iā€™m an aspie, and part of what that means is I struggle to understand situations emotionally. I can come off as insensitive or read the mood wrong which often leads to people misunderstanding my intentions or where Iā€™m coming from.
More often than not, what Iā€™m saying will make 100% sense to me but not the person/people reading it. I also stick a lot more firmly to my opinions than I should because people tell me I fold too easily, and I come off as more egotistical than I actually am to cover up my low self-esteem lol.
So yeah, canā€™t think of any experience in particular but sometimes it might be my fault? At least I suspect that it is?
Since someone recommended Remarried Empress, I would like to recommend my own webcomic: Princess Love-Pon! It's about a young girl named Lia Sagamore who becomes the titular magical girl and purifies people's hearts when they're tainted by the Dark Queen! It's really cool due to its diversity, the main character is black and her best friend is Afro-Latina, the villain and her prince son are also black, and there's a Japanese girl, a black guy, and an Indian girl. Plus, loads of pink and frills!
Thank you very much, though I actually donā€™t take recommendations, even from close friends. The Remarried Empress anon wasnā€™t a recommendation; they were more pointing something out to me and then I went to confirm.
Unrelated to MLB: Which PokƩmon are your favourites?
I used a ā€œFavorite Pokemon Pickerā€ because I prefer going by generations to pick favorites and that was the easiest way of going about it. I struggle picking super favorites so hereā€™s what I got form each generation! (my only rule was ā€œone Pokemon per evolution lineā€ with an exception of the Eevee line since theyā€™re different types, and also Alolan/Galarian forms)
(note: the blue-patterned Vivillon is my favorite and I honestly donā€™t like Charizard normally but the Y version actually slims him down and gives him the wings I feel he should have; itā€™s an improvement of the design so it gets my seal of approval, I donā€™t like the X version at all)
Never seen it, though when I brought up to someone, they didnā€™t recommend it to me at all ahaha.
I previously kept having this argument about The Bechdel Test with someone. She keeps insisting that the test is invalid because there's nothing wrong with talking about men and that it was created for lesbians only, and not for feminists, with the implication that being a lesbian somehow means that you dislike men or want them gone. And she also thinks the test is about NEVER talking about men, rather than merely occasionally talking about other things. I keep telling her otherwise, but...
Have you ever played Akinator, with or without the Miraculous Ladybug characters? Because I played it with Ochaco from MHA and Marinette and he guessed them within a second(can your character control gravity? Is your character a protagonist?). I even played it with myself as the "character" and he guessed "your shadow" lol. How about you?
Iā€™ve played Akinator before but I donā€™t specifically remember what I was searching for lol.
Have you noticed that in many shows, especially shonen shows, people tend to hate the most "feminine" female character? Like, in Naruto it was Sakura, in Death Note it was Misa, in My Hero Academia it was Ochaco(although a lot of people like her so I'm not so sure about that last one?). The most hated character in one too many a shonen is almost always the "girliest" of the characters. They're always claimed to be useless or reliant on a man. And this is within the fandom who should know better!
It probably didnā€™t help with Sakura that she was decked out in pink hair; thatā€™s an instant girl label for you (or lesbian label, depends on the person :P).
I donā€™t think Iā€™ve been in enough fandoms to have such an experience but I definitely see where youā€™re coming from.
Rewatching Chat Blanc and Here To Help from Star vs. and hearing Adrien/Marco tell Marinette/Star that they always liked the girls from the beginning makes me so pissed. It's not that I don't ship Starco(I do! But I also like MarcoxJanna), although I don't ship the love square, but I'm so annoyed with writers finding the need to make the audience "know" that the main ship's characters "always" liked each other, as if that makes their love for each other more true, even if it's obvious they had other crushes? Like, what happened to Kagami Tsurugi? Jackie-Lynn Thomas?
News flash: Teenagers are allowed to have crushes on multiple other people before they find "the One". It doesn't mean their love for that "One" is any less valid. And if you still want to pull the "they always liked each other since they first met", at least make it actually TRUE!!! Don't have them have crushes on other people before moving on to the "official" crush and be all like "Oh, by the way, I liked you from the start," when it's dead obvious they didn't. You're doing a disservice to the romantic "false" leads.
I'm willing to forgive Star's crush on Oskar and Tom since she's not the one claiming she always liked Marco(even though she fell in love with him LONG before he fell in love with her, which is a nice turn of events), although her "love" for Oskar was merely an infatuation at most and I personally don't see why it was needed. Why don't they just say that their old crush didn't do it for them???
UGH, I remember watching that show and being so annoyed because I really liked Marco and Jackie and wanted them to be a thing but I knew that theyā€™d pull Starco in the end because of course they would.
It also totally makes it seem as if love is the most powerful relationship there is (aros would like a word), which is so bizarre when there are so many ā€œpower of friendshipā€ tropes. Like, a male and female lead have to get together because their relationship is the strongest.
The love square would hold so much more meaning to me without this love drama nonsense. Itā€™s tiring.
Have you seen Yuki Yuna Is a Hero? If so, then what are your thoughts on it? I was thinking of watching it but it seems to be another "taking away the empowerment of the magical girl genre by making the girls suffer instead" type story. I read about it on TV Tropes and apparently it's a deconstruction that takes after Madoka Magica which already puts a bad taste in my mouth, but then I got to the examples and they're basically about how girls who get magical powers lose their body parts one by one and that the reason only girls can be heroes is because "young girls have always been sacrifices".
Not to mention it was written by a man and aimed towards a seinen(adult men ages 17-35) demographic, making it torture porn for adult men. Also, both the laconic page for Yuki Yuna and Madoka Magica say "Being a magical girl sucks."(though for Yuki Yuna it adds "Unless you have the power of friendship.") and to be honest that kills any desire in me to watch the show. Should I give it a chance?
Oof.
Yeah, after bringing it up to a friend of mine, it was instantly recommended of me not to watch it, so Iā€™d say, ā€œno.ā€
Let's make one thing perfectly clear. I, love, love, LOVE Sailor Moon. And I love the transformations, too. But if there's one thing I don't love, it's that their outfits all look pretty much the same but with different colors/different lengths of gloves and shoes and stuff like that, and that they all have the exact same body type save for the one fat girl who's made to look bad. I don't like Madoka Magica, but at least they all had unique/different costumes(but they still have similar bodies).
Weā€™re not allowed diversity here. Take your different body types to a show that cares; weā€™re all about femininity here and how girls can be beautiful and powerful no matter wha--oh wait...
Yeah, I donā€™t care for the design in Sailor Moon, but thatā€™s because skirts donā€™t interest me design-wise unless itā€™s really unique/interesting.
(note that thereā€™s a lot of talk about tomboys, sexism, and TV tropes and such below, and then Madoka Magica after that; thatā€™s basically the rest of this askplosion:)
I just saw the thumbnail for a video called "Why You Should Watch Princess Tutu(Yes, I Know The Name Is Stupid)". Umm, why is it stupid exactly? Because it's "girly"? What is with people thinking that in order for a girly show to be good they have to first separate the show from its girliness in order to enjoy it? It's like how men will say a show is good despite it being girly, or that since it's good it's no longer girly. Nobody does this for boy shows, because boy things are "never" stupid.
Princess = girly thing
Tutu = girly thing
girly things = bad
Thatā€™s the formula~ They shouldā€™ve called it something edgier and manly so that more people would be interested.
I'm wary of any woman or girl who says, "I'm a girl, but I'd rather read books about guys" or "I'm a female writer but I mostly write stories about male characters". I feel like those women are the "not like other girls/one of the guys" type who suffer from internalized misogyny and don't like female characters. I also feel like they're the type to not care about female representation, because in their minds, girls shouldn't care about female role models. We can enjoy males just as much! I do!
To be fair, they might also just be writing about shirtless men doing ā€œhandsomeā€ things. ;P
But nah, I see your point. Me personally, I try to find a balance of writing both, but I do think there can be bias.
Do you think it's okay to like a ship but acknowledge that it wouldn't be safe or healthy or condonable in real life? Because I was just thinking of how a lot of people like some really "toxic" ships like Veronica/JD in Heathers, Yuno/Yukki in Future Diary, Madoka/Homura in Madoka Magica(although some people don't like it because of its toxicity/like it but don't realize it's toxic), almost any villain/hero ship, the list goes on. But they're aware of the fact that it's not a good standard for healthy relationships in real life.
An alternative I've seen is people having a crush on "dangerous" characters like JD and Yuno, or Karma from Assassination Classroom(there's not a single video on YouTube with him in it that DOESN'T have comments full of people saying they want Karma to father their children), but still being aware of the fact that the character is a) not real and b) wouldn't be a good partner if they were real(and that's assuming they even want to be with you. But sometimes there's a good reason for falling in love with a "toxic/dangerous" character.
Take Monika from Doki Doki Literature Club! She's obsessed with the player(not the player CHARACTER, the flesh and blood player themselves) to the point of killing off all the other girls and "trapping" you in a room with her where she talks endlessly about lots of things. But she's actually a lonely girl who's driven insane by the fact that nothing around her is real. She latches on to you because you're the only other person who's real and sapient and has got a mind of their own. You're literally her outlet to the outside world.
She's personally my favorite character in the game due to her actually being a more fleshed out, sympathetic(and not in the idealized "moemoe" way), and realistic take on the Yandere archetype(which, like many moe archetypes, is kinda misogynistic in nature in that it reinforces submissiveness; it's basically animes version of "woman scorned".). So it makes sense that people would sympathize with her and want her to become real, because all she's ever wanted was to be real and to talk to real people. Especially since she really did care about her friends and even returned them back to life because she saved their backup files, taking herself out of the picture.
I read a few "Monika becomes real and lives with you" fanfictions where she's really sweet and not at all crazy and cares for you a lot, and it's never felt the same as all those other "Yandere/psycho lives with you and is your girl/boyfriend" type stories precisely because those stories tend to just glorify possessive partners that kill your loved ones, drive your family members to commit suicide, and tear up your stuffed animals and dollies for the sake of it, rather than go into why they're so crazy for you, and often reinforce Stockholm Syndrome.
Plus, those "things" she talks about in the empty room? They're actually quite smart and make you think about the world for a bit. Not many "crazy" type characters actually get that. They're all about how "I'll slice your boyfriend open with an axe if you don't date me wa ha ha", and even if they're not, it's all the fandom will focus on, to the point of ignoring any and all other aspects to their character. Because that "crazy in love" aspect is the most appealing part of them. Maybe it's due to forbidden fruit/bad boy(or girl) appeal? Who knows? But I'm starting to wonder if it's still as bad if people recognize the problematic aspects of "crazy in love" characters or "dysfunctional" relationships.
Because if they recognize it's not real and don't really want it for themselves, then it's probably not much of a problem. But if they just go on wanting it to be real and never take a step back and go "wait a minute, this isn't real love; they're only together because he latches onto the first girl to show him any kindness and affection and she's a doormat who doesn't want something bad to happen if she leaves him", then that's bad.
Obviously it's not as bad as being in love with literal stalkers, killers, and rapists in real life(which is an actual thing, believe it or not, it's called hybristophilia), because fictional characters will never be real. Karma Akabane will never be real. Yuno Gasai will never be real. JD will never be real. But loving fictional characters who do those things and not realizing the problem with it may cause people to seek out real criminals, so it's best to separate fiction from reality.
I canā€™t help judging a little internally, but yeah, I think people can ship whatever as long as it has that ā€œnot in real lifeā€ scenario going for it. Itā€™s ultimately fiction, so just because I donā€™t like it and/or think that itā€™s bad doesnā€™t mean other people canā€™t ship it.
I'm getting tired of all the racists on TV Tropes getting upset whenever a trope has a Japanese name. Whether it's Tsundere, Yandere, Meganekko, Genki Girl, Bokukko, or any Japanese anime name, people will complain that the trope exists beyond anime so it shouldn't have a "cute anime name", and that it should instead just be given a broader(read: English) name with the same meaning. Or that the site is too obsessed with anime. I'm just sick of people saying that anime names are bad.
The other thing is that we donā€™t actually have English words for certain things? I mean, the whole reason we say, ā€œtsundere,ā€ is because it says everything in one word. Itā€™s easy.
(Also, people are aware the the English language isnā€™t some unique thing that takes no inspiration from other languages, right? Itā€™s a mix of things, so accept that other languages exist because we literally wouldnā€™t have English without them.)
Have you seen the TV Tropes reviews for "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic"? Holy crap, they are all a perfect example of the "Real Women Don't Wear Dresses" phenomenon that I have mentioned earlier and is so fucking present on this site. While some reviews praise the show for showing that "it's okay to be strong AND girly"(such as Hadles' review, which was really splendid), and that girl shows are no less good, others either insult the show by calling it "girly, saccharine, and stupid" as if "girly" is synonymous with anything bad about a show, or feel the need to distance it from its girliness in order to praise it as if a show can't be good if it's also girly.
Some people were saying things like "the show might seem girly at first, but it's actually a good, brilliant show with intricate plot twists, well-developed characters, and even some scary moments" and "the characters aren't just shallow girly-girls, they have depth!" So what, girliness is mutually exclusive to anything of value? One person even said that the Girl-Show Ghetto was the reason they couldn't get into the show or respect it. Just...wow.
And one review even said "Rarity's pretty tough for a girly girl!" Excuse me? Tough FOR a girly girl? So being a girly girl somehow automatically disqualifies you from being tough? Like "yeah, she's tough despite being a girly girl! Because girly girls aren't supposed to be tough."
It reminds me of the phrase "you're pretty for a black girl", which, while it's never been said to ME, I have heard other people complain about. It's sick and it hurts, just like this. And the few people who didn't say things like that still said that they couldn't get into the show at first because it looked "girly and vapid", before changing their minds and thinking that the show either proved their biases about girly shows wrong, no longer think it's girly since girly shows "can't" be good, or like it "despite" it's girliness.
And there were 70 reviews in all. 70 reviews full of this misogynistic "girly is bad" shit. So in conclusion nearly all the reviews on TV Tropes for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic were along the lines of one of three things. 1) "This show is girly so I looked past it because girly shows are dumb." 2) "This show is good despite being girly/the characters are good despite being girly." and 3) "This show is not girly to me at all because it is well-written and captivating and girly shows aren't capable of such things."
Granted, some people there were able and willing to call out those who judged the show badly for being girly(or gave it the "not like other girls" treatment, but in show form), as well as people warning other potential viewers to get rid of any potential bias they may have against it due to it being girly. But there were still more people insulting its girliness as a reason they think it sucks or denying its girliness to justify their liking of it than the other way around.
I would've accepted it in the form of "If you think this show is bad because of its inherent girliness, then you are wrong!" or "This show is proof that a show being girly or aimed at girls doesn't and shouldn't take away from its value, as people seem to believe." or "A girl can be girly and be a strong female character.", but no, instead I got shit like this. It's especially insulting when TV Tropes is a site that devotes itself in part to critiquing sexist tropes found in media, only to turn right around and reinforce them.
I donā€™t read TV Tropes that frequently, so I fortunately missed out on all of these complete idiots who associate girly products with being bad.
(that ā€œpretty for a black girlā€ comment makes me hate all aspects of ā€œexpectations of beautyā€ and itā€™s like--plz let these die)
I could maybe see an argument for criticizing a girls show for beingĀ ā€œsaccharineā€ if it were like, ā€œgirlsā€™ shows written by men who clearly donā€™t know how to write girls are usually bad,ā€ because then itā€™s not a criticism of girlsā€™ shows exactly but rather who keeps being put in charge of writing them.
I get so annoyed when people get upset when confronted with the matter of female representation with "what's so wrong with one show having a male protagonist or mostly men and one/a few women? Why do we have to include women in everything?" These people clearly do not understand that one show doing it is one thing, but when multiple shows do it, it's an obvious problem. It's even worse when they turn around and diss shows with largely female casts for "not having enough men".
And as for people getting upset that "every show has to include women/come with a checkbox nowadays", as if it's bad to include women in your story...look around. Women make up 50% of the population. They're literally everywhere. What reason do you have to not include a substantial amount of women?
These people act like male is the default and women are a last resort. They see no problem with men dominating a cast because it's justified(despite that not reflecting real life), and yet having female characters, or, hell, a female-dominated cast(I know they also don't reflect real life, but there are still female-dominated spaces; most colleges are 2/3 female) is "unrealistic" trying to fulfill a quota, or a straw feminist agenda, as if characters can't be female for their own sake. You shouldn't have to be forced include women because their presence should be a given.
How many stories nowadays take place in the war front in Viking times or whatever? A lot of men just don't want to include female characters or see them represented(well) in media because those who are overrepresented tend to want to stay that way. They likely also have insecurities about their masculinity and are worried about female characters flooding their shows with estrogen and ruining the shows they love, because they can't relate to female characters or enjoy shows about them without negating their girliness(ie. This show seems girly, but it's actually good), since they're ashamed to associate themselves with anything feminine due to looking down on women or seeing them as bad.
Plus they want to be the center of everything so the second a show is about mostly women they get upset and claim it's "sexist against men" because it's not about them. Hence why bronies(bless their souls) are made fun of for the grave sin of enjoying a female-centric show with a female protagonist and largely female characters. Granted, there are some freaky fans, but there's still some sexism at play here.
This reminds me of a post I saw about a boy who actually looked up to female characters because you can pick a role model who doesnā€™t fit your gender. Crazy concept, I know. ;P
And yeah, thatā€™s how it goes with equality. People who are best/most represented donā€™t want equality because they think it means less for them and they donā€™t want that, like a child who doesnā€™t want to share their cookies with everyone else.
I love TV Tropes, but if there's one problem I have with it, it's how often it associates femininity with weakness. The "Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy" trope is a good example of this, but the worst offender in my opinion is the Girly Girl With a Tomboy Streak, as most of the examples there are simply of girls who are strong-willed or fierce or can fight. Because you know, those traits are male. It's bad because there are ALREADY tropes for girly girls who can fight, Girly Bruiser and Lady of War (which TV Tropes even goes out of its way to SAY shouldn't be counted as a "Tomboy Streak" and yet does stuff like this), but it's also bad because ANY girly girl with these qualities, no matter how feminine they are otherwise, will be seen by TV Tropes as having to be at least somewhat tomboyish(read: masculine) in order to have those traits. Because regular girly girls are just weak and fragile and only want to be housewives.
It's even worse when you realize that much of these characters are created with the exact purpose of subverting the stereotype that girliness equals weak, and instead present a new and more empowering form of femininity: that femininity is strong and DOES NOT equal being a passive sex tool for men's pleasure. They're MEANT to show that being a tomboy is not the only way to be strong, and TV Tropes acknowledges that! But then they also go and claim these characters have "Tomboy Streaks" thus undermining the positive message by insinuating that you have to be tomboyish to be strong and that even girly girls have to have some level of masculinity to be deemed respectable and equal human beings, plus manipulating many impressionable folks into thinking strength and bravery is automatically tomboyish.
Worse yet, they often put a character here because "she's a big eater" or "she burps/farts a lot". Gee, I didn't know women had bodily functions? I didn't know women had digestive systems? So basically any time a girl shows that she is a human being and not a pretty, passive doll to be idealized, she is acting like a man. Because only men are fully-fledged human beings. Even outside of that, look at basically any masculinity-femininity contrast trope(Tomboy and Girly Girl, Sensitive Guy and Manly Man, Masculine Girl Feminine Boy, etc.). The "masculine" character will often be described as dominant, assertive, or outspoken, and the "feminine" character will often be called weak-willed, passive, emotional, and timid. It's fucking sickening.
The Tomboy With A Girly Streak trope is similar to its inverse in that a tomboyish girl will often be placed under this trope with their proclaimed "girly" streak being that she's tender or cries a lot or is soft spoken/a doormat. Because being girly is about not taking up too much space, not having any ambition or aspiration, and overall being a weak and shallow waste of space. For a site that claims to dismantle such sexist misconceptions, it sure does reinforce them just as much.
I almost want to stop using TV Tropes based on that and many other reasons, but it's a genuinely informative site that at least tries to avoid these stereotypes(plus it's edited by more than one person), it just doesn't do enough. For example, they made an awkward claim once that women can't fight while on their periods, and even have an Improbably Female Cast trope, as if it's abnormal that a cast could consist of mostly women and demands an explanation. To them, femininity=inferior.
And then in comes the ā€œanti-girl tomboyā€ characters who basically do everything ā€œgirls donā€™t do;ā€ glares at things like make-up and such, rolls eyes at the subject of ā€œgirl talkā€ or ā€œromance,ā€ drinks anything carbonated and spreads their legs wide open, etcetera.
Guys really donā€™t get the same version, at least not that Iā€™m aware of? Like, at best, they donā€™t participate in ā€œguy thingsā€ but thatā€™s about it.
Having characters acknowledge it just makes everything more blatant, like if a woman comes by and the guys have to assure ā€œDONā€™T WORRY, SHEā€™S LIKE ONE OF THE GUYS.ā€
Itā€™s like a woman can only hang out and engage in ā€œguy talk/timeā€ (the concept of which I hate but thatā€™s besides the point) if they can crush a beer can against their forehead.
OMG TV Tropes called Cirno the Ice Fairy from Touhou a "tomboy"? Why? Because she's boisterous and outspoken and not a "shy girly-girl" like Daiyousei! TV Tropes clearly believes that any girl or woman who is more than just a pretty face(which ALL women are, by the way), who takes up space, who has a dynamic personality and isn't just a weeping wallflower(which I'm not saying Daiyousei is) is a tomboy. Because she's acting like a man that way. Ugh, so over TV Tropes and their sexism.
And all the girls in Touhou(including Cirno) wear big frilly dresses anyway so it doesn't really make sense to see ANY of them as tomboys. But no, apparently any girl who is rowdy or tough or is active and not passive is a tomboy. You gotta be a tomboy to have attitude. You can tell they think so because they often say things like "strong, but still feminine" as if those things are opposites. They even described femininity as "weak and susceptible, vain and superficial". Like, ugh, kill me now.
I legitimately want to see a bullet point list here of what qualifies as a ā€œtomboy.ā€ Like, what, anyone who does one thing that isnā€™t ā€œgirlyā€?
Can we just throw out all of these terms; not even replace them, just throw them out?
Tropes is because I'm working on a story and I hope when it becomes famous that TV Tropes will write about it, but as it stands, I'm beginning to wonder that TV Tropes undermines most stories or plots to do with women one way or another. I mean, they constantly create tropes with the intent of calling out inherent biases, yet reinforce those biases themselves.
For example, they have a trope called Men Are Generic, Women Are Special, which points out the bias of male being the default, and yet on almost every other page on the wiki describing a trope, the default character will be a "he"(especially if it's a character trope), and whenever they mention "The Hero" or "The Big Bad" it's always a he unless it needs to be female(like if the heroine is in a romance story, or if the villain is a seductress). Female characters at best, can hope to be "The Heart" or "The Chick" of the group(which is often used in a demeaning way).
They even have a trope called "Improbably Female Cast" in which they point out all the instances of a story's setting having an "over-abundance" of women or girls with no men in sight, and claim that such stories have majority female characters when it is "unusual" "unlikely" or "lacks justification". Someone even suggested that the trope should be called "Where Are All The Men?" as if there's something inherently weird or wrong when a story is dominated by female characters, and like the story is in dire need of men, as if only men can be protagonists.
Even if the story has a justifiable reason for having mostly women, the fact that the writer made that choice at all is somehow deserving of mention. The mere fact that there's no "Improbably Male Cast" trope shows where the site's biases lay. They don't see anything wrong with a show being dominated by men with little to no female representation(ex. Death Note), and yet a show dominated by women(ex. MLPFIM) is somehow an anomaly and demands an explanation(even if the story does provide a reason for it, TV Tropes will still list it and presume it "improbable", as if to say "I mean, yeah, but there's no reason why you couldn't just make them mEn instead", as if writers who have mostly female characters are going out of their way to steer away from the "default" males.
In fact, they even admit that "Men Are Generic, Women Are Special" is their reason for having such a trope, but not the inverse. They even say that it's not the trope if the show revolves around a group of girlfriends with no indication of the gender ratio in the wider setting. So any time the females outnumber the males a story it's instantly labeled "improbable" because there's NO WAY any setting AT ALL could have more females than males. That's improbable! You see, this is why when women are 1/3 of the people in a given space men perceive it as "majority female" because they're uncomfortable with women having more of a presence than men.
We'll never have true equality if shows with majority female casts continue to be scrutinized under a microscope and assumed to be of inferior, lesser quality, just because there's no male characters around and it's women who are driving the plot. My problem isn't that they have a trope for majority female casts, it COULD be a testament to gender equality(ie., "there used to not be a lot of shows revolving around women, but now they're becoming increasingly common and well-known), but it's that they single out such stories as "unlikely" and thus discredit them.
And worse yet, they refuse to change the name, because they don't see a problem with it. So now every single show that doesn't have an equal number of males and females or more males than females is going to be called "improbable" by TV Tropes, because there's something(bad) to be said about shows that choose to make most of their characters women. Death Note and Naruto can slide by the radar of having loads of men, but Madoka Magica and Touhou are "improbable"? Because they have loads of women?
I started out complaining about how TV Tropes says that boys will watch Star Vs. The Forces of Evil only because of Marco(who's great, but it comes off like boys can only relate to boy characters) and that the show only looks girly but has a deep complex plot with scary moments(as if a show can't be dark and complex and still be girly; girly=shallow, watered down fluff), hence my complaint about TV Tropes undermining girly shows or anything "girly".
Yup, exactly like I said.
Good stuff in ā€œgirlyā€ things is the exception. Good stuff in ā€œmanlyā€ things is expected.
Which is funny when you consider stuff like ā€œedgyā€ reboots of things. Like, Disney remakes their original movies and that usually means making them worse (like in Beauty and the Beast - god I hate that remake - where the objects are going to become complete objects when the last petal falls even though the enchantress is explicitly a good person and it comes off as super cruel and unnecessary), but that seems to just be its own breed of bad I guess.
Then there are terms like ā€œchick flicksā€ and ā€œsoap operasā€ which are usually women-oriented and tend to be considered dumb/over-dramatic.
You know, not like MEN shows with their sexualization of women, guns and MEN things.
Remember what I said about TV Tropes being sexist? Well, they also have a trope called "Girly Run". Like, that's literally the name. Girly. Run. Thankfully the first example(which is under advertising due to the forms of media being in alphabetical order) is an aversion from the blessed Like A Girl campaign, but...just reading the page lets the casual-yet-bold-faced sexism speak for itself.
why canā€™t things just be like the Sims where characters can wear whatever the hell they want and have any personality without any judgment or criticism from other Sims?
I know you don't like Frozen but I saw a theory somewhere that Elsa's powers came from making a contract with Kyubey and her wish was to impress her sister and anyway I can't stop rolling my eyes. This isn't(just) because of my distaste for Madoka Magica compared to my love for Frozen, but if Elsa's a Puella Magi then why didn't she become a witch long ago? How did she make it to adulthood? How did she become emotionally stable? And why do her powers have to come from a negative source?
I think it might just be people looking for excuses to do their crossover fanfiction which--yeah, Iā€™m not crazy about that.
Did you know that Cristina Vee voiced Homura Akemi in the English Dub? It's very noticeable, especially during the Cake Song, where I could've sworn she sounds exactly like Marinette. By the way, I'm still not sure what the hell was going on in that song. Could you please explain it to me(if you know)?
Nooooo donā€™t make me think of Homura when I think of Marinette!! fjkdgjnfdg
lol but seriously, I think the Cake Song is just meant to be one of those ā€œweird but meant to be dEePā€ things that shows do sometimes to be cool (not a criticism technically; depends on how itā€™s used).
I think the cake is the labyrinth and Homura saying that sheā€™s the pumpkin makes her the odd one out since pumpkins are associated with scares and halloween, so itā€™s ā€œforeshadowingā€ her being the witch. The things that they say they are... theyā€™re like--ingredients for a meal, but not a cake, so the the cake is the labyrinth and theyā€™re the things that would go inside it.
Homura and Madoka are the only ones who really get descriptions to go with them. Homura says that sheā€™s ā€œfull of seedsā€ (despair?) and Madoka implies that itā€™ll bring sweet dreams once sheā€™s sliced (which is either referring to the godly freedom given to magical girls before they turn into witches, or foreshadowing Madoka being ā€œsplitā€ after Homura stops Madoka from purifying her, leading to Homuraā€™s ā€œsweet dreamā€ of what itā€™s like when everything is ā€œnormalā€ after her reality twisting).
May I ask what you don't like about Kyoko's character? Is it because she was the stereotypical "jerk with a heart of gold"? Or because the writer made her flip from hating Sayaka and wanting her dead to suddenly dying for Sayaka even though she barely knows her compared to Madoka(because the writer doesn't understand how girls' relationships work)? For me it was a mixture of both(though I still don't mind KyoSaya!), but I still liked her enough, she just felt a tad stereotypical. Your thoughts?
Itā€™s both. I just donā€™t like characters like her at all and the runtime of Madoka Magica canā€™t maintain all of these characters, ā€œdevelopingā€ them, and then killing them off. I donā€™t even have any time to get attached to them because theyā€™re dead within a matter of a few episodes.
And itā€™s always like, ā€œokay hereā€™s this characterā€™s backstory to make you feel emotionally attached--HA NOW THEYā€™RE DEAD. SEE??? WE TOTALLY GOT YOU.ā€
Like, no, you didnā€™t. I didnā€™t even have time to care about THEM, much less their actual death.
What about the girls in Madoka Magica? Do you think they're strong female characters? Now, obviously the show is not feminist, since it misses the whole point of Magical Girl, which is to empower girls and show them that girls can be powerful and feminine and can find strength in solidarity with each other by instead making them suffer and fight each other and have their power come from their emotions, which are exploited and turned against them because women can't be powerful, but still...
Itā€™s the same way I feel about Marinette; there are some who I want to say are strong characters, but the writing is ready to just kill them off at any time and bully them for essentially having emotions.
Basically, imagine a male writer hands you a character sheet and is like, ā€œAW YEAH CHECK OUT THIS sTrOng FEMALE CHARACTER I WROTE.ā€
Like, even if they were right, their ego and obnoxiousness about the whole thing, along with what they actually do to said character, makes you not want to give them any credit for it.
How do you think Puella Magi Madoka Magica would be different if they had magical boys as well(which can mean either gender-bending canon magical girls or introducing original magical boys)? Do you think the show would be better? Worse? Or would it be just about the same?
Personally I feel like having magical boys would be good and bad; good because there would be no more of the ā€œteenage girls are hystericalā€ crap and it wouldnā€™t just be girls suffering because they canā€™t handle power, and bad because it would still be problematic(for stereotyping all teens as over emotional and deserving to be taken advantage of by the Incubators, and it would still be about kids suffering in a genre meant to empower girls, having some of them be boys wouldnā€™t help that much).
I also feel like Gen Urobuchi would still make the girls suffer more and have them be more emotionally and mentally unstable. Holy crap it feels like he read up on Aristotleā€™s views on women while making this show.
It would at least be more balanced I guess? Like, teenage years are a fragile time, so it would make sense for both girls and boys to be taken advantage of. I still wouldnā€™t like it but it would be nice to point out, ā€œthere are emotional boys as well as emotional girls.ā€
Literally all the problems with Treatment of Marinette, Chat's Entitlement(TM), and the sheer sexism in general(ex. all the teenage girls and even women villains being catty and bitchy, while the male villains are cool, suave, and calculating; female villains being irredeemable scum while male villains are "not as bad as they seem", etc.) could all be solved if the show just got some more female writers! You know a show isn't feminist like people claim if none of the writers are women.
That's what I love about Friendship is Magic; the show is written and directed by a woman and actually has a variety of both male and female writers! Plus, Lauren Faust explicitly identifies as a feminist and claims her works are meant to empower women and show them that there's no wrong way to be a girl. And the show reflects that! There's no "token girl" who checks all the boxes; the females have realistic flaws, diverse personalities, and let's not forget ARE THE HEROES!!! Not to mention that the cast is actually PREDOMINANTLY FEMALE. Do people have any idea how refreshing that is?!
And that's why whenever people claim that shows like Madoka Magica are feminist when it's written by men for men while also dismissing actually feminist shows written by women for women as "sexist" or "demeaning", I cringe inside. It's not just what the show looks like, it's what the people behind it say.
And Gen Urobuchi is not a feminist. At all. Just listen to the things he says about the girls, that they're terrorists who are full of hubris and destined to be alone, and that actual magical girl shows weren't his inspiration beyond the show's cosmetics, he just based it off of porn games. He only watched those shows after making Madoka Magica and admitted they were weird to him. Well, maybe they wouldn't be weird if you actually used them as inspiration! Why are you even making magical girl? So basically he admitted that all the suffering the girls go through is because it's his fetish.
I knew I wasn't imagining things when I saw all those weird shots and angles(ex. zooming in on Sayaka's thighs and breasts when she collapses to the floor, Madoka gripping the bed sheets between her legs when agitated, zooming in on Kyoko's ass when she takes her phone out of her shorts' back pocket, it's all for cheap titillation). And yet people keep saying the show is devoid of male gaze and sexism and why? Because apparently men know how to represent women better than women themselves.
you said ā€œMadoka gripping the bed sheets between her thighsā€ and it gave me an immediate flashback, I hate it
I find that itā€™s a similar thing with gay anime/manga; Iā€™m more likely to trust a F/F story if itā€™s written by a woman since theyā€™re less likely to sexualize everything.
Homura in Puella Magi Madoka Magica: But Madoka, what's going to happen to you? You'll end up all alone here forever! You'll never be able to see your friends and family! Homura in Rebellion: Haha, screw Madoka's friends and family! Only I am worthy of Madoka's love! That girl belongs to me! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!(I'm sorry for the over exaggeration, but this is how it felt for me.)
Apparently, it was better for Madoka to just have all of her memories and powers yoinked away.
Sayaka is Madokaā€™s right hand girl so idk why Homura has this idea that she needs to sAvE Madoka. The fact that this whole thing comes out of a misunderstanding (because Madoka doesnā€™t have her memories) is so irritating.
I actually love Madoka Magica, but I completely agree with you on the hysterical women thing. Why couldnā€™t they just have... both magical girls and magical boys? Like, just mention that magical boys are a thing? They donā€™t even have to change anything but that, they donā€™t even really have to show it, just be like ā€œyeah thereā€™s magical boys too but thatā€™s not really what this story is about, itā€™s about our characters we have hereā€. I donā€™t know, feels like that would have at least helped stuff.
Yeah, they donā€™t have to bother having the magical boys around. Just to know they exist would be enough. I mean, the fact that the focus is on them would still be bothersome (theyā€™d probably do a thing where each girl represents a different emotion that is easily manipulated/easy to control), but itā€™d be something.
One thing that weirds me out when people are talking about Madoka Magica is when people refer to the characters as "little girls". Like, excuse me? They are not "little girls". They are teenagers! All of them are at least 14 years old! I hate when people call them "little", it's just so condescending and infantilizing, especially when the show does enough of that to them already. After all, no one makes that mistake with the heroines of Lucky Star and Hidamari Sketch(who are also drawn by Aoki)!
I feel like itā€™s the equivalent of when people call women ā€œgirls,ā€ yā€™know? Sort of a ā€œtreating females as younger than they really are,ā€ which is probably what gives guys the feeling that they have control.
For a gender that claims to be so dominant, certain ones sure have to delude themselves a lot to make themselves feel better.
I was thinking about what you said about Puella Magi Madoka Magica passing the Bechdel Test, and if it counts if there's barely any men to talk about. And while I do agree that it counts, I also feel that it doesn't really matter much in shows such as Madoka. This isn't even about feminism, this is about the fact that if a show has next to no men in it at all then it's pretty much a given that they won't talk about them since it would be impractical to talk about something that doesn't exist.
So because of that, I think there should either be an alternative test which only applies to shows that have a significant or equal number of male characters and yet the ladies still pass the test(making it feel more "real" since the option to talk about men is there), or the test should be rewritten entirely so that it only applies to shows in which the cast is either equally gender-split, or has a majority male cast/significant amount of males even if the females still outnumber them.
Reminds me of how, on TV Tropes, someone suggested that there should be a "Weak" and "Strong" Bechdel Test, where "Weak" refers to the women talking about something other than men because it is literally what's relevant at the moment(such as two female police officers discussing how to catch a female killer), thus applying the Bechdel Test there seems semi-void, while "Strong" is when they could talk about men but choose not to(ie. two female students talking about their grades during lunch).
And just to clarify about the "Strong" one, when I say they could talk about men but choose not to, this isn't to imply that female characters should talk about men, or that something's wrong with them for not talking about men, just that there's nothing stopping them from doing so, but they choose to talk about something unrelated to men. I think this strategy is much better than the test we have because it makes conversations between female characters seem more real since they're discussing things other than men of their own volition, rather than the non-male-centered talk being because they have to talk about it in-universe. I say that because The Bechdel Test serves to show that women's lives don't and shouldn't revolve around men, and they can talk about other things if they want to, but if the conversation is because they have to(like the example I gave), that gives sexists the opportunity to go "Yeah, well, they're only talking about it because it's their job!"
But if the female characters talk about things other than men of their own free will(as in, when the option is still there), then it shows that women really do have their own free will to talk about their own things and that there is NO REASON to not pass the Bechdel Test in today's day and age(I keep hearing people claim the test is stupid and doesn't matter, but then it should be easy to pass). "Oh, but if they had the choice, they would talk about men." No, because men don't sit around and talk about the women in their lives all day so why should women talk about the men in their lives all day? And to the people saying these types of tests are getting in the way of their "creativity", well, now that we know that you think female representation is stupid and something you have to be forced to do, we don't have to listen to a word you say. ;)
I like the idea of adjusting the Bechdel Test for other circumstances and expanding it as such!
You could also extend it to things like sexualization, because--I mean, having two female characters who talk to each other probably doesnā€™t mean much if theyā€™re half-dressed or the writer wanted to make them bisexual for ā€œThe Fanservice.ā€
To be honest deconstructions of Magical Girl confuse me. There are some good ones out there(such as Princess Tutu and Revolutionary Girl Utena, so I know they're not all just torture porn, my only gripe with Utena is the implication that girls who take on the feminine "Princess" role are weak), but at its heart Magical Girl has always dealt with death, gore and pain just as much as female empowerment.
It makes me feel like the people who write these stories haven't seen magical girl and think it's all just sunshine and rainbows and that just because it's "girly" it's vapid and has no substance, and since the only way to have substance apparently is to be "dark", they go "screw it with all this princessy magical shit! Let's make our show dark instead!" When in reality if they had just sat down and watched a magical girl anime, they would understand that this is not the case.
Not to mention that many of them tend to have fanservice and the idea that magical girls have to suffer, so instead of empowering young girls, they end up misrepresenting the genre and turning it into fetish fuel torture porn for adult men(Madoka Magica and Yuki Yuna are very good examples of this; the writer of Madoka says that the girls are terrorists and full of hubris and that he was inspired by porn games). It's not that you can't deconstruct the genre at all, but it's almost never done tastefully and the magical girl themes are just a cover used to explain the suffering the girls go through. :(
Another thing about magical girl deconstructions is that they often reinforce patriarchal themes, like that girls shouldn't want things for themselves and that genuinely doing something for someone while also having ulterior motives that help yourself are a BAD BAD BAD thing, no matter how ultimately harmless they are, even if they help everybody involved. They also tend to reinforce Tall Poppy Syndrome and portray the powers as harmful or a bad thing, implying that girls shouldn't have power.
Honestly, I think there can totally be even more substance in magical girl anime that doesnā€™t have to resort to ā€œmake it eDgYā€ (which I feel like is a slippery slope that can easily come off as lazy); for example, Iā€™d really enjoy seeing something deeper to magical girl powers than something like, ā€œoh, this magical girl happens to have the power that fits their personality,ā€ such as a magical girl who has a power she feels she doesnā€™t fit but itā€™s a matter of perspective/seeing herself differently, or a magical girl who does have the powers that ā€œfitā€ her personality - like a ā€œfieryā€ girl with fire powers - and the weaknesses in her powers correlate to the weaknesses in her personality, so she has to either iron out those issues or find workarounds, as true ā€œperfectionā€ isnā€™t possible nor practical, which is something all the girls have to accept despite whatever pressure theyā€™re under.
.I dunno, I like lore and powers revolving around metaphors. Itā€™s fun.
About what you said in regards to "no pueri magi because it doesn't hit the shock value threshold enough", I remember this interesting comment I saw on an article called "The Problem With The Dark Magical Girl Genre"(which I would totally recommend checking out, by the way!) which said that shojo magical girl and seinen magical girl both embrace a different philosophy regarding strong female fighters. In shojo, they tend to embrace femininity as a strength and show girls that they have the power to do whatever they want and undergo dangerous professions. But in seinen, which conveniently enough is more likely to "deconstruct" the genre(ugh), rather than admiring the girls and supporting them in their endeavors, the girls are meant to be pitied(often to the point of infantilization) when bad things happen to them, with the fact that they are girls serving to make everything worse. It operates under the idea that girls are fragile, in need of protection, and shouldn't be fighting at all.
That's why deconstructions like Madoka Magica and Yuki Yuna don't sit right with me, and also why I don't consider them feminist series. People can say whatever they want about Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure, but ultimately they also had dark and dangerous themes(to the point where some kids had nightmares), but ultimately allowed the girls to rise above the hell they went through and find the strength in them to save the day. We feel bad for them when they die, not because they're moe girls, but because we were actually given the time to form a connection with them and want to see them succeed, rather than just be expected to pity them because they're cute manipulated girls. That way, when they ultimately save the day, it's all the more satisfying. Princess Tutu was a deconstruction that actually went about it in the right way, because the girls eventually found the courage to defeat their enemies in a way that made sense. Why the hell is it a "good" thing to subvert that?
No clue, but I basically agree with everything there. I mean, Madoka Magicaā€™s entire stick is basically that all the girls are like ā€œuwuā€ in terms of the style (with Madoka being the ā€œcutestā€ of them all) and then being put in this dark and edgy plot+setting; itā€™s for both the shock value and the ā€œcontrastā€ of having ā€œmoeā€ characters be thrust into these situations to essentially die.
And the conclusion doesnā€™t end up being satisfying (at least to me) because the villain doesnā€™t have emotions so heā€™s just like ā€œowoā€ (seriously, I wouldnā€™t hate on Rebellion so much if Kyubey had been given emotions rather than going crazy; Homura can basically do whatever she wants and it was SUCH A MISSED OPPORTUNITY) so it ends up being more about the journey getting there like wow look at all the sUbvErSiOnS and dEaTh we had along the way!
Because at the end of the day, itā€™s still like, ā€œthe girls give into their ā€˜hysterical emotionsā€™ in the end basically no matter what,ā€ even if they get saved by Madoka in the end.
Do you remember, in Madoka Magica, when Kyubey said that humans would still be living in caves if not for the Incubators? First of all, keep in mind what Incubators do. Their entire purpose on this earth is to feed off the emotions of young teenage girls as they spiral into despair as a result of their delusions of power. Like wow, let that sink in. Apparently humanity's advancement relies on the exploitation of women. We are literally the punching bags of the universe. Isn't it lovely?
No! You see--weā€™re so important to the world! If we werenā€™t emotionally exploited, the world wouldnā€™t be the way it is now! :D
I once saw a tag on tumblr that read "The only good magical girl anime is Madoka Magica because it's gay, and even it has problems." Like, ugh. Really? Has this person not watched ANY other magical girl anime? Such ignorance. So many things wrong with that statement that I can't--and WON'T--even begin to unravel here.
MADOKA MAGICA IS NOT GAY AND Iā€™M SO TIRED OF PEOPLE CLAIMING IT IS
Do the girls in Madoka Magica even have transformation phrases? You know, like how Marinette says "Tikki, spots on!" or how Sailor Moon says "Moon Prism Power! Make-up!" or how Iris in LoliRock says "Iris! Princess of Ephedia!" etc. But in Madoka Magica, there doesn't seem to be any of that. At least in Yuki Yuna they pressed a button on their phones. But how do the Puellae Magi even transform? Just goes to show you how Gen Urobuchi knows next to nothing about the genre he claims to deconstruct.
Transformation phrases are magical and cool and you canā€™t take that away from me.
I had a shower thought about Madoka randomly in bed last night: If a Magical Girl's Soul Gem loses control over its user when 100 metres or further away from it, that meant that when Homura got Sayaka's Soul Gem back for her, Sayaka should've regained consciousness once Homura was less than 100 metres away, even if she didn't have her Soul Gem yet. I also love to ponder why on Earth Homura would even bother retrieving Sayaka's Soul Gem if she only cares about Madoka and Madoka's well-being.
I think itā€™s just a complicated process of Homura trying to make sure Madoka doesnā€™t fall into despair herself (in a non-witch way) and is convinced to make a wish.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that Sayaka really got the worst deal out of the whole thing. While her story may seem more "mundane" compared to the others(she just wanted the token Ill Boy osananajimi to like her back), she's the only one who somehow isn't brought back when Madoka recreates the universe, loses her Soul Gem on more than one account(and on the second, she starts decomposing and her crush sees her and calls her a monster because he thinks she's pretending to be the REAL Sayaka), is supposedly the weakest Magical Girl, getting swiftly taken out by both Kyoko AND Homura(the latter of which doesn't even make sense, if her body can heal why was she taken out so quickly?), takes a long while to show up in Magia Record, and Gen somehow finds it suiting to single her out as the one who is "destined to die" every time she makes a contract. Apparently the series director wanted Sayaka to live/be brought back, but Gen refused because it just had to be edgy.
Of course, MEN are allowed to have wish fulfillment power fantasies and dream like the sky's no limit and aspire to be all they want to be, but the second WOMEN try to be the strong ones, the powerful ones, or dream of something for themselves and others, they have to learn a lesson about how unrealistic their fantasies are and how they'll never live out their dreams. Hence why Sayaka puts the blame all on herself, saying that she's not a hero and was stupid and selfish the whole time.
"token Ill Boy osananajimiā€œ dfhbgjhfdgdfg
It was a real shame because I liked Sayaka somewhat (not saying much but still) and she was such a predictable one to go. Like, ā€œoh wow, an angst-y anime all about shock value? so basically the best friend is dead then with no chance of survival.ā€
I think I do remember being told/reading somewhere (so donā€™t quote me) that Sayaka is the one thatā€™s hardest to keep alive in the games, so you have to work hard for it. It just sucks.
Yet another thing that bothers me about Puella Magi is how the show frames the young ladies as if everything is their fault even though they have no idea what they're getting into because the person who makes the deal doesn't even bother explaining shit to them and all the show's attempts at deconstructing is just taking lighthearted elements meant to empower girls and show them that they can be brave and strong as well as feminine and make them dark and morbid.
Like, I get the whole "having young girls fight is a little unrealistic" aspect, but most magical girl shows actually do touch on that! Only difference is that over time, they become stronger and better at fighting(which is only to be expected, whether you're a teenage girl or not) and become more competent along the way because the whole genre is about FEMALE EMPOWERMENT.
Not to mention how the show seems to forget that the Incubators are villains and even seems to put them in the right and the girls in the wrong, what with the claim that they rationalize with the girls they make contracts with like sentient human beings(yeah, because emotionally manipulating young girls and literally taking their souls out of their bodies and making them liches without their consent is definitely treating them like sentient human beings), and that they always follow up on their end of the deal whereas it's the girls' faults their wishes go sour because they never wish for what they truly want(I'm sorry, but I simply DO NOT buy that. Homura and Mami outright wished for what they wanted. Their wishes went sour because the plot "decided" that they should have wished in a different way; plus, you're telling me that if Sayaka had outright said she wished "for Kyousuke to love her back" that the show wouldn't just "make" him mind-controlled or have Sayaka "outgrow" her feelings by the time he falls in love with her, all the while making it out to be "her" fault he's so heartbroken because she was some kind of tease or whatever, further demonizing girls' sexualities?).
Plus they explicitly claim that every woman in history was a magical girl and that without them, humanity would still be in caves(as in, humanity wouldn't be able to progress without the oppression and exploitation of women, and women can't gain power without going insane because female power is some unhealthy, inhuman, infernal thing.). Even if we take this all as a reflection of patriarchal society(which I highly doubt it was, if anything, it reinforces it), all it does is imply that the oppression of women is the natural order of things, required even.
As for the girls themselves, they routinely beat themselves up and the show makes no effort to tell them they're wrong(up until the massive cop-out of an ending), like how Sayaka's last words before becoming a witch are literally her "admitting" that she was "stupid, so stupid" for wanting a boy to love her and be healed of his infirmity. It just seems like we're supposed to think "you know, maybe the Incubators aren't that bad!" while ignoring that the girls are being treated like the disposable trash bags of the universe. This show already does the magical girl genre dirty but treating it like everything the Incubators did was necessary and like it's all the girls' faults these things happened to them in the first place is the icing on the stale, sour cake. Nothing like a giant heap of sexism to help get you through your day. :/
Iā€™ve noticed this a lot in Miraculous, but Madoka Magica somehow does it worse; this ā€œone (supposed) mistake leads to all of these consequences you never saw coming.ā€
Like Ladybug calling Lila out. We know that Lilaā€™s pettiness in ā€œChameleonā€ shows that it wouldnā€™t matter whether Ladybug yelled at her or not; the simple fact that Marinette opposes a liar led to Marinette getting expelled, even if only for a while. Then thereā€™s ā€œMiracle Queenā€ and all that garbage that came with it.
These two shows put their teenage girls through hell for having emotions and thereā€™s no way to undo it.
Honestly, the Madoka Magica fandom is basically the magical girl equivalent of "not like other girls" type women. I can't say I'd be surprised if they didn't watch a single magical girl show other than Madoka because they're all "stupid and girly but this one is edgy and dark" just because those shows are written by women to inspire other girls and show femininity as a strength while Madoka Magica is written by men for men who want to see young girls suffer without any actual feminism.
Like, let's go through their arguments one-by-one to prove that they don't hold up. They love to say that Madoka Magica is better than other Magical Girl shows because "it's dark and edgy and shows the downsides to being a Magical Girl unlike other shows where it's all sunshine and lollipops". First of all, other Magical girl shows also got very dark. Princess Tutu and Utena are also "darker" takes on the genre, but even more lighthearted shows like Sailor Moon and Precure had scary moments.
The only difference is, with them, they still managed to critique problematic aspects of the genre and actually provided ways to improve it, while STILL managing to keep their target audience(FEMALES) in mind, without condescending to them and infantilizing them. And they still showed the girls being empowered and overcoming the darkness.
In Madoka, there's none of that, there's no actual critique of the genre because Gen didn't have the respect for it to do his research, it's aimed at men so it doesn't keep female viewers in mind by definition(which is also another reason why it can't be a deconstruction; deconstructions should be done FOR its target audience), and the girls are constantly put down and treated like Moe crybabies by the narrative even when they're not(cause, you know, teenage girls are "emotional"!). And it doesn't offer ways the genre could improve, it just takes a female-empowering genre and twists it to be this system of oppression that the genre is meant to avoid.
Magical Girls tend to have a very strong focus on girls empowering girls and all that awesome stuff, and yet when Madoka and Mami form a special bond and Madoka encourages Mami by telling her she's not alone? It makes her big-headed and overconfident and she gets devoured by Charlotte. See what happens when girls rely on each other? Madoka is Sayaka's best friend, but gets pushed aside in favor of Kyoko, who later dies for Sayaka because girls who want to help each other had better be prepared to suffer and die for their beliefs. Sayaka loses everything, which happens to include her best friend, over a guy. And the whole witch process means that any female solidarity that could be found in the show is thrown out the window since the core concept of the show is girls being forced to brutalize and kill and exploit each other.
People act like Madoka is Yuri when it's not, Gen was asked if Homura really was in love with Madoka and if Kyoko really was in love with Sayaka, and what did he do? He beat around the bush. Naoko Takeuchi and Kunihiko Ikuhara(the latter of whom also worked on Sailor Moon R; woah, what a surprise) both admitted that there was gay love in their stories, yet people act like Madoka is super progressive regarding homosexuality when it's just implied and those shows were MUCH more open! Doesn't stop people from claiming the show is "honorary yuri" and saying that the meaning of "yuri" should be broadened to include any close bonds between two female characters, whether or not it's actually romantic, AND favoring the show(and HomuMado) above actual yuri shows that are made to appeal to women. If all this were actually valid, Sailor Moon would be yuri as hell.
I hate seeing people fap over this show and act like it's so revolutionary for recycling things that the genre was ALREADY DOING, because I know full well that the ONLY reason it gets this wide acclaim is because Magical Girl shows have traditionally been written for women and this show is aimed at men. That's literally it. Because nothing a woman writes is good enough, especially when it dares to go against patriarchal constructs of femininity as weak and docile by portraying it as cool and awesome. It doesn't matter how cool and dark and diverse and inclusive and complex Sailor Moon and Precure and Princess Tutu and Utena are, they're written by/for women with the intention of empowering them so they're automatically invalid, cheap, happy-go-lucky crap where nothing bad ever happens and anything those shows try to do ought to be discredited because they don't appeal to men like they should so what's the point?
But the second a MAN comes in and intrudes on a female-dominated space by doing all of those things but with a very shallow understanding of how they ought to be executed, people are all over it because a MAN did it and now it's interesting and respectable! I have seen so many people say that they don't like Magical Girl because it's girly and shallow and stupid, but then they praise Madoka for things that the girly and "shallow" shows have already done! Men are always taking away things meant for women and distorting it to fit their patriarchal views and yet when they do it it's somehow better and anyone who complains is simply a whiny straw feminist!
The fandom does it all the time, someone complains about the show and why they don't like it and find it sexist, and the response is always "you're just not smart enough to understand it; you have no idea what you just watched". Because obviously since it's made by a man it's sooo much smarter then the traditional sappy stuff made by women. That's why it's so annoying when others praise it at the expense of other works in the genre: they know their reasons for liking it are, more often than not, rooted in sexism against female-aimed and female-empowering works, so the only way they can praise it is at the expense of said works, hence them being just like girls who claim they're "not like other girls" when there's nothing wrong with girls being feminine and in fact many of those girls may like the same things you do!
So while I'm not saying there's anything inherently WRONG with liking Madoka, I DO have a problem with people who act like it's better or more serious than other shows in the genre and simply discard them on the grounds that they're "for girls", since they obviously didn't watch them.
me when I initially watched Madoka Magica: I donā€™t get why this exists.
me when I learned it was written by a man: ohhh, now I get it.
I also take issue with people comparing things that are made for different demographics. Like look, I donā€™t care if you enjoy your angst display over here, but also maybe donā€™t compare it to the stuff not even made for you unless youā€™re willing to get into a fight over it?
It comes off wrong, like they have to trash on stuff because it wasnā€™t made for them, yā€™know?
Honestly, I am so sick of people saying that Magical Girl shows are sexist or anti-feminist, when all they do is portray girls being awesome and powerful while also being feminine at the same time, because "Well in Japan it's actually gender conformity because it's telling girls they can only be strong if they're feminine! You're just projecting your Western values onto an Eastern work!".
First of all these shows are made by women for women and often have explicit feminine messages that you literally cannot miss unless you are simply blind or trying not to see them. And they also tend to have a very strong focus on women supporting or empowering other women. Just think of Sailor Moon, which constantly gets this "criticism", and yet there's an episode where the girls explicitly protest against a villain who claims women are all shallow and useless and can't do anything without men's help. Would Naoko Takeuchi put that in the show if she weren't a feminist?
And then there's the fact that she has said that one message she wanted the female leads to convey was to value their relationships between other girls because girls are strong and don't need to waste time depending on men. There's also the fact that most Magical Girl shows tend to treat the powers as something special and awesome that's unique to women and girls, paired with the coming-of-age themes present in the show, and you get a magical equivalent of female puberty, with magic mixed in.
But no, all of that gets thrown out the window because they dare to be "feminine" while doing all of that stuff and the Japanese are forcing their girls to be girly through Magical Girl propaganda. And I just HATE when people act like anything feminine must be societally forced onto girls, rather than girls just happening to like them. In addition, stating that they are simply reinforcing gender roles by being feminine is such bullshit because the whole purpose isn't about conforming to patriarchal femininity, it's about reclaiming femininity.
Too often, femininity is associated with being weak, powerless, helpless, submissive, docile, vapid, catty, bitchy, petty, vain, stupid, the list goes on. Magical Girl saves femininity from a bad reputation. It shows femininity in a new light, as something strong and powerful and, hell, even admirable! It's about telling girls "Hey, you can be strong and powerful and smart, but you don't have to be a tomboy or act like a man to do so". Girls are always told they have to act masculine to be taken seriously because the only way to be respected is to be like a man, which is an indirect way of saying that only men deserve respect.
Magical Girl does away with all that in favor of showing the feminine as something innately powerful, and yet naysayers MISS the point and say that it's just stereotyping girls instead. To see people claim that Magical Girl forces girls to fit a feminine ideal to be respected is just disappointing. It's supposed to be a female power fantasy for young girls that shows them as the ones being powerful and empowering each other.
Take how in Sailor Moon the heroine often says something along the lines of "I won't let you take advantage of girls", which Wedding Peach went on to imitate. The purpose of the genre is for girls. To empower girls. So why on earth would they show them fitting into a "male" mould of power? Do these people think that any time women are shown acting distinct from men that they are doing something wrong?
And the hypocritical part is that nobody pisses on male-oriented anime for reinforcing a harmful narrative to boys that they have to be masculine to be valued and respected. Of course they don't! Because being "masculine" is never seen as a bad thing to be. It's assumed that masculinity is always strong and good and awesome and there's nothing wrong with boys being forced to be masculine because you're supposed to want to be masculine. You're not supposed to want to be feminine.
So of course people will shit all over Magical Girl for embracing, empowering, and reclaiming femininity, because it's not supposed to be that way! You're not supposed to be feminine and also be strong. You're supposed to deny your identity as a woman and assimilate into the boys' club because only boy things are worthwhile! And they cover it up by saying that Magical Girl forces girls to be feminine, when in actuality the WORLD forces girls to be MASCULINE. Magical Girl doesn't force girls to be feminine, It ALLOWS them to. Do you see the difference there?
Another thing I'd like to bring to the table is that the claim is racist and here's why: The claim that "Magical Girl shows are seen as feminist in the US for portraying femininity as a source of strength but not in Japan because it's telling girls they have to be feminine"...what does that mean? Japanese people can't be feminist? All Japanese people are sexists and think girls have to fit in a certain role? Do Japanese feminists HAVE to be anti-femininity? Are there literally no Japanese people who think you can be feminine AND strong(who also obviously identify as feminists?) Because it seems hella sexist to insinuate that Magical Girl shows are sexist because they're made in Japan and they don't believe you can be feminine AND strong there.
While there is some credibility to it since Japan IS, by and large, much more strict with gender roles, hasn't it ever occurred to these people that these types of shows exist to counter that belief? Not only that, but it implies that people aren't allowed to have opinions on works that aren't made in their culture, and that anyone who sees those shows as feminist are just projecting their Western beliefs onto an Eastern work. And even worse, when people say that, they don't have the same opinion of Western Magical Girl works.
Just look at LoliRock, Miraculous Ladybug, Winx, W.I.T.C.H., Star vs the Forces of Evil, and countless other European/Western Magical Girl works. Where are the people saying "They get their power from femininity and that is sexist!"? Nowhere! They're silent! Even though those are very much like Magical Girl works from Japan(although I don't think the genre originated from there), while still being original.
It's because people think that any media exported from Japan is automatically sexist and demeaning and so anything they create, no matter how empowering their intentions, gets twisted into something that's somehow toxic or unsafe for girls to watch. But when Europeans do the exact same thing nobody complains. Because Japan is not allowed to do anything empowering whatsoever; something's always wrong with it, apparently.
So that's why I have a problem with people who say those things; it's so problematic because they think they're being all open-minded and aware/respectful of other people's cultures, but all they're doing is reinforcing negative stereotypes further. It's kinda like what I said earlier(in another ask) about how people love to praise Madoka Magica for being a unique, dark, and interesting take on the genre when all it did was rehash elements of the genre that already existed, strip away the female empowerment, and gear it towards grown men, which is why people like it more. How about instead of speaking for Japanese people you let them speak for themselves?!
I would also like to add that thereā€™s even a limit to women acting masculine because thatā€™s still ā€œnot enoughā€ for those kinda of men who would promote those beliefs. Women need to act more masculine to ā€œbe taken seriouslyā€ but then you have men whoā€™ll tell them to ā€œdress lessā€ or whatever.
I think what it comes down to is that they want women to not be ā€œemotionally taxingā€ with all those dAmN eMoTioNs of theirs (unless itā€™s for the sake of their angsty magical girl anime where the girls suffer for having emotions), but they also need to look pretty and be sexualized.
We canā€™t win.
Every like and reblog is appreciated <3
Amy Santiago has so far had a lifetimeā€™s worth of great jobs, which, she knows, isnā€™t that hard when you love work and everything it implies. Everything from assisting her middle schoolā€™s librarian to that brief job at a small uptown museum her degree got her to being a respected sergeant in the NYPD. Sheā€™s loved every single job but, sheā€™s now come to realise, nothing vill ever beat her most recent employment: Motherhood. With a capital M, yes.
Mac throws her and Jakeā€™s worlds over like the tiny miracle of a storm he is and theyā€™ve never looked back since. Itā€™s brand new, itā€™s exciting, itā€™s scary, and though theyā€™re not exactly religious, heā€™s the answer to their prayers. Parenthood turns out to be nothing like what theyā€™d expected, like nothing theyā€™d ever tried before and looking past some of the rough days, which are inevitable, itā€™s actually even better. They get to shape and watch a human grow; a human of which theyā€™re both the genesis and they couldnā€™t be any more proud - both of each other but also their son.
Everything Mac does and achieves is a moment to remember, and they take nothing for granted: every new sound, even simple gurgles, every new movement, even the flick of a tiny finger? They beam, look at each other with wide, joyous eyes and celebrate their newborn addition to their little family. They hold on to everything they can, while they can although, they swear, every other day theyā€™ll be lying in bed with him while he sleeps or watch him begin to explore their apartment on his own and theyā€™ll take turns breaking the comfortable silence with what theyā€™re both thinking:
ā€œThey just grow up so fast.ā€
Even if heā€™s merely grown a tenth of an inch since the last time they brought it up.
This fact aside, before they know it, their before so very tiny and helpless son can sit without assistance, sooner than later starts crawling and before they seem to have the time to catch up with the ladder he suddenly knows how to say ā€œmamaā€ and ā€œdadaā€ - and the day Mac takes his first steps, Amy filming on her phone while Jake is squatting to entice his son? Both parents guiltlessly shed a tiny tear rewatching the video that night after their little one, who suddenly seems so big, is put to bed.
With the walking comes the talking. Mac, like his dad, is an entertainer and seizes every chance he gets to chat with his parents, and anyone else whoā€™ll listen for that matter, and hopefully make them laugh. Amy quickly sees through the fact that her sonā€™s mannerism is definitely inspired by her husbandā€™s, and Amyā€™s heart swells at every glimt of it: everything from Macā€™s tiny ā€˜big dramatic movementsā€™ to him attempting to crack small jokes (that sometimes are actually super funny but also mostly make people laugh because his delivery is beyond precious). Despite the fact that his personality is absolutely a solid blend of both parents, Jakeā€™s genes definitely conquer everything else, and Amy doesnā€™t mind one bit. Although she could do without the short, Peralta-inspired attention span, which can be both very cute but also slightly maddening when youā€™ve told your barely 3-year old toddler 6 times to finish their meal meanwhile heā€™s to preoccupied by his father cleaning up the water said toddler spilled just seconds ago.
All in all, Mac is a copy of Jake, and in more ways that one Amy is grateful. Especially when the little boy starts getting a grasp of the word ā€˜loveā€™ and what it actually means though his parents have showered him with it since before he was born. Jake and Amy will tell Mac ā€˜I love youā€™ on the daily and, besides this, his parents themselves arenā€™t exactly shy of telling each other, especially Jake who often tends to do it out of nowhere or any kind of context which the boy mustā€™ve picked up on at some point.
It starts off quite naturally: the first time he says it.
One night after getting him washed down and put into his favorite firetruck-print pyjamas (the parents couldnā€™t deny him it even though they were far from thrilled), Amyā€™s sitting with Mac in his new so-called ā€˜big boy-bedā€™. Feeling her sonā€™s curly-haired head nestled into her chest, one hand grabbing onto the fabric of her shirt while the other holds onto his best buddy Leo the Lion, Amy reads out loud from one of the many books sheā€™s managed to accumulate for her son. Obviously worn out from the day Mac, as being almost 3 is very exhausting, stays silent and listens carefully to the sound of his motherā€™s voice, dutifully paying attention to the bookā€™s colourful drawings and even sometimes pointing at them whenever Amy reaches a part of the story thatā€™s been illustrated.
ā€œThen the little puppy ran through the big big field and the big big forest to get back home-ā€œ
ā€œShee, Mommy,ā€ Mac interrupts her with a lisp caused by the pacifier hanging from one corner of his mouth and points to the drawing of the running dog with his index finger. ā€œDoggy runth!ā€
ā€œYeah, I see, baby,ā€ she smiles before pecking the top of his head. Normally sheā€™d ask him to remove his pacifier when he speaks. Her and Jake slowly trying to make the object something Mac knows he can use to relax rather than constantly needs, but when itā€™s this late and right before bedtime Amy canā€™t be bothered to reprimand him. For now sheā€™s just proud of her tiny, smart guy. ā€œWhere is he running?ā€ She pulls back to look at him, encouraging him to explain further.
ā€œHeā€™sh going home!ā€ he smiles proudly to a point where his pacifier almost falls out, just barely clinging on for dear life.
ā€œThatā€™s right. Heā€™s running home to his family - good job,ā€ she chuckles sending him one last smile before skimming her wristwatch quickly realising bedtime is just minutes away. Itā€™s not that theyā€™re following a strict schedule that depends on every single minute and second of the day: something sheā€™s actually glad Jakeā€™s and his more laid-back lifestyle has transferred to their parenting-style. Although Mac, his parents have come to find out, will reach a point during the evening where itā€™ll be too late and he becomes overtired and impossible. Therefor 8 PM is the ultimate limit (on weekdays, that is) and Amy sees it quickly approaching so she quickly finishes up their story and shuts the book closed.
ā€œThatā€™s it for today, Mr. Mac. Time to visit dreamland,ā€ simply not able to resist the feel and smell of her sonā€™s newly washed curls, she places another kiss to the top of his head before climbing out of the small bed and hears him reply with a yawn which tells her that sheā€™s probably timed bedtime perfectly. To the great delight of the now also tired mother (a high rank full-time job and a toddler will do that to you) sheā€™s once more proved right when Mac gets under the covers without a trace of fight.
ā€œRoshie?ā€ he looks up at his mother with worried eyes as he hugs Leo the Lion a bit tighter. Those stupid beautiful brown eyes heā€™s inherited from Jake. Ā
ā€œOh,ā€ Amy kneels down to the bedā€™s side and starts running her hand all over the duvet, mattress and bed-frame. ā€œWhereā€™s Rosie, bud?ā€
Rosie aka. the pink unicorn heā€™d gotten from auntie Roro back when he was still a tiny baby (though heā€™d always be Amyā€™s tiny baby) was missing and they both knew very well that there would be no sleeping without it. Suddenly her hand comes across a bump, to her relief revealing the stuffed animal once she lifts up the duvet.
ā€œYay, mommy!ā€ her son smiles as if sheā€™s cracked the mystery of the century and Amy canā€™t help but feel just a bit proud - anything she does that makes her boy happy will do that to her.
ā€œThere you go,ā€ she smiles and places the unicorn in his arms right next to Leo the Lion. ā€œAll good, Mr. Mac?ā€
He nods profoundly, eyes suddenly clearly tired and droopy, which earns him a warm smile from his mother before she leans in and kisses his forehead tenderly, all at once running her hand fingers his curls as to get her one last fix for the day. Incredible how your child can become somehow addicting.
ā€œSleep well. I love you,ā€ she pulls back to take him in, the declaration of love hanging in the air for a few seconds before, taking Amy by surprise, her son answers her.
ā€œI wuv you.ā€
She knows ā€˜loveā€™ is an abstract feeling that a toddler canā€™t really comprehend and isolate as an emotion, which is probably also why Macā€™s never said it back before, and although sheā€™s told him a million times before and has never awaited or needed an answer, him saying it back definitely throws her off in the most magical, proud, emotional way in a long time. Sheā€™s constantly proud of the little things he does on the daily, slowly becoming a tiny actual human with opinions and a personality, but this is a whole new level.
ā€œThank you for saying that,ā€ she can feel tears forming in her eyes and throat, but doesnā€™t want to confuse the small child whoā€™s just begun to understand ā€˜loveā€™, and therefor doesnā€™t also need to be explained that crying can also be a sign of happiness. That is an oxymoron that will surely just confuse him when, currently, crying is Macā€™s way of expressing and understanding sadness and anger.
ā€œThat was very sweet of you and I love you so so much too, baby,ā€ she manages to say it one last time, without breaking, before getting up to turn on his tiny night light and leave. ā€œMe and daddy will be just down the hall watching TV, okay?ā€
A slight movement from beneath the duvet lets her know heā€™s heard her before she allows herself to half-close the door and walk back to where Jake is cleaning up after dinner. There she is finally able to let out a few soft cries as she lets her husband in on the small, incredible moment sheā€™s just had with their son. Of course, it instantly makes Jake feel like crying with joy too. Their baby is surely the best.
From there on itā€™s just one big mess of declarations, at the most random moments and Amy is very amused but also even more enamoured.
One night Jake is away on a stakeout which leaves Amy is home alone with Mac, and to the toddlers immense joy this means heā€™s allowed to sleep with his mom in her and dadā€™s enormous bed. Jake has told him to keep mommy safe while heā€™s gone and of course takes this task very seriously. Itā€™s 3 AM, theyā€™re both fast asleep when suddenly Amy is awoken by what seems to be quite some new weight on top of her chest.
ā€œMommy,ā€ promptly breaks the silence slowly bringing Amy back to consciousness.
It takes her a second to collect herself but she instinctually reaches out to figure out exactly where her son is in the dark. Itā€™s quickly clear that heā€™s stretched out stomach down across her chest. ā€œYes, baby?ā€ she mumbles tiredly eyes still closed hoping that her son is just being restless and will go back to sleep.
ā€œI need pee.ā€
ā€œOh.ā€
This, with a power that almost no other request from her son holds, immediately dawns upon and takes over her body pushing her to sit up. Mac is pretty much fully potty trained but only day-wise. During the night he still uses a diaper, and theyā€™ve only just recently started easing him into the night-potty by telling him itā€™s an option. The boy showing initiative himself is an absolutely great start and even more importantly an opportunity she wonā€™t let slip by.
ā€œYou wanna go use the potty?ā€ she looks at him to make sure and he immediately nods. ā€œOkay, lets go then.ā€
And so they scurry out of bed and make their way across the hall to the bathroom, hand in hand in the darkness, where once the light is turned on Macā€™s potty awaits him.
With a bit of help from mommy, he pulls down his pyjamas pants and diaper before getting settled on the potty. Thereā€™s no hiding the fact that theyā€™re both very tired, especially Mac whose head hangs a bit, almost asleep while giving in to his bodyā€™s need for relief while Amy sits dutifully on the floor besides him.
ā€œGood job telling me, Mac,ā€ she praises, smiling tiredly but the little boy is too tired to even react.
They stay like this for a while, in silence, Amy not wanting to interrupt a probably concentrated Mac, when suddenly he, to her surprise, is the one to break the silence.
ā€œIā€™m peeing and I love you, mommy,ā€ he mumbles tiredly almost fully asleep right there on the potty, messy curls hanging in whatever which way gravity will allow.
Then, as if sheā€™d never been tired, asleep, woken up and feeling exhausted, Amyā€™s body rises to a much higher level of awareness. Warmth, one that completely makes her forget about the bathroom floorā€™s cold tiles, spreads throughout her entire being and if it wasnā€™t for the fact that he was currently trying to pee, Amy wouldā€™ve pulled him into the tightest hug right there. But she doesnā€™t, of course, and instead settles for a gleaming smile.
ā€œMommy loves you too, honey,ā€ Heā€™s her very own bedhead, she thinks to herself lovingly running a hand through his hair. ā€œAnd Iā€™m so proud of you for waking me up to go potty.ā€
Itā€™s very faint, too tired to put much effort into it but thereā€™s definitely a small smile growing on her sonā€™s face, When he falls asleep on top of her chest a bit later after heā€™s done and has been put into a clean diaper, just to be safe, the smile is still there, Amy can tell even in the dark.
Another occasion, itā€™s safe to say, happens when Amy leasts expects it. Theyā€™re running on ā€˜tantrum from hell: hour who-even-knows-anymoreā€™, this time triggered by the banal fact that, no, Mac wasnā€™t allowed to play with the big knife Jake had been using to cut vegetables for their dinner.
Everyone has their bad days, the parents are well aware, but this one of Macā€™s was particularly bad. All day, from the minute he woke up and went straight to the living room instead of joining his parents in their bad, heā€™d been extra fussy thereby not feeling content with whichever way his parents tried to fix his mood. Theyā€™d been understandable and gone easy on him all day, hopelessly trying to please him while also not just giving in to his unreasonable demands. It appeared that this was very a fine line to walk, and so far it sure hadnā€™t offered them the intended results. Both parents were exhausted and Mac screaming was far, so very far, from their ideal way of spending the evening in.
Both Jake and Amy have tried experimented with different tactics, some that are known to work. Picking him up to soothe him; ask him if heā€™s hurting somewhere; offering him to choose one of his daily snacks like a glass of milk, yoghurt or a fruit; suggesting that they play a gameā€¦ Ā But the little boy wants nothing. Nothing but that huge, sharp kitchen knife.
ā€œLook, you can cry all you want, but daddy is not going to give you the knife. Itā€™s dangerous, Mac,ā€ Amyā€™s voice is definitely stern but nonetheless still calm well aware of the fact that screaming as well wonā€™t get her anywhere. Besides that she also considers herself a structured, punctual but nonetheless also a cool mom: nevertheless enough is enough. Sheā€™s really had it by now, hands resting defensively on her hips Ā as she feels a head ache creeping up on her meanwhile her 3 year old, whoā€™s now lying face down on the kitchen floor, lets out yet another scream.
ā€œListen to mom, bud,ā€ Jake intervenes the best he can without interrupting his wifeā€™s operation. ā€œSheā€™s super right, you know? The knife is very very sharp and in your small hands it can easily slip and hurt you. We donā€™t want that.ā€
Another scream is how heā€™s thanked for the explanation and Jake, even though he loves his son unconditionally, has to roll his eyes and sigh. Logic is not relevant when youā€™re working with a toddler, he has learned but nonetheless gives it a try every time theyā€™re back in the arena - only to be disappointed.
They try not to be the kind of parents that scold or punish their kid unless itā€™s necessary and they but alas this is not one of them. Amy has had it and shares a look of confirmation with her husband before proceeding - she needs him to back her up on this.
ā€œOkay, McClane Santiago-Peralta,ā€ Amy says strictly. Full name? This is the point of no return, Jake knows.
ā€œIf youā€™re going to continue to behave like this then thatā€™s up to you, but that also means itā€™s time for time-out, because daddy and I donā€™t know how to help you, when you keep screaming like that.ā€
God, she hates this side of parenthood and this shade of herself, though she knows it necessary.
ā€œKnife!ā€ Mac cries out rolling onto his back and hitting the floor with the palms of his tiny hands in protest of now both the knife and the time-out.
ā€œIā€™m not going to keep discussing this with you,ā€ she makes up her mind, picks up her son which results in him screaming/crying even louder while also putting up a fight by wiggling his entire body in his motherā€™s hold. ā€œIf youā€™re not going to go by yourself, like the big boy I know you usually are, then Iā€™ll have to carry you there.ā€
And so Amy, knowing that the most important thing right now is that she sticks to her pledges, starts walking out of the kitchen and down the hall towards her sonā€™s room. The wiggling continues, the crying doesnā€™t come to quit and he even adds kicking into the air as she carries him to the mess of it all. He really doesnā€™t want to go, even less have his mommy take him there since itā€™ll mean that heā€™s really pushed her to the limit.
Then suddenly the next wail he lets out suddenly sends the situation down a completely different path.
ā€œI just want the knife and I- I wuv you, mommy!ā€ her son screams loudly through his cry, face all red and scrunched up as if he was cursing her which by nature results in Amy freezing on the spot, left to wonder what the hell had prompted that outburst.
That one was new, she thinks, and how the hell do you handle this exact situation right? On one hand his previous acts, and the fact that heā€™s still hysterical, means that he deserves to be sent to his room; on the other hand he just screamed, bloody murder, that he loves herā€¦ Parenthood was indeed so confusing sometimes.
A sigh leaves her body.
ā€œI love you too, Mac,ā€ she figures he deserves, and always will deserve, to hear it back - no matter how frustrating and crazy the situation might be.
ā€œAnd daddy does too, but itā€™s really hard for us to help you when you scream and cry like that, baby,ā€ she gives explaining the consequences of his tantrum one last shot, and, to her surprise, the boy actually stills in her arms and buries his face into her chest. The cries die out before transitioning to small sniffles and alas Amy sees the opportunity to, perhaps, talk some sense into her son.
ā€œWeā€™d much rather have you use your words, tell mommy and daddy whatā€™s actually wrong, rather than having you scream and cry like this. Do you understand?ā€
Thereā€™s silence but Amy can feel Macā€™s tiny head slide up and down in nod against his chest, and relief, although it might still just be a false sense of safety, floods her entire body.
ā€œSo, what is actually wrong? Why are you sad?ā€
ā€œI-ā€œ Mac sniffles trying to mould his thoughts. ā€œI just wanted help daddy make food.ā€
Of course, she thinks internally rolling her eyes.
ā€œI see,ā€ she nods. ā€œAnd you can help daddy cook, but next time youā€™ll have to say it like that. Use your words, okay?ā€
He nods again before lovingly grasping onto a strand of his motherā€™s hair.
ā€œGood,ā€ she pecks the top of his head. ā€œNow,ā€ she cranes her neck to look down at her sonā€™s face where itā€™s half buried into her tear-stained shirt. ā€œDo you want to be in your room by yourself for a bit to calm down, or do you want to come help me and daddy clean the kitchen and set the table?ā€
ā€œI wanā€™ help,ā€ he mumbles obviously lacking energy after spending it all throwing the tantrum, but if he wants to be with them and redeem himself then Amy wonā€™t be the one to stop him. It took a while, but Amy always tries to remember that heā€™s still very little meaning that itā€™s inevitable that some social skills arenā€™t fully developed. So whenever he can come to his senses, with his parents guidance or not, Amy will of course be the first one to endorse it.
ā€œIā€™m glad to hear that,ā€ she walks back towards the kitchen with Mac resting silently in her arms.
A third memory that pops into Amyā€™s mind upon trying to remember the many random momentā€™s where her son has shared his love for her out loud and of the blue (Peralta-stylez), is one time (of the many) they went grocery shopping together. Theyā€™d been wandering around the big grocery store, her and Mac, targeting the cereal aisle, hand in hand with a basket in Amyā€™s free hand.
ā€œOkay, since you and daddy ate the last of the Fruit Loops this morning we need to get some cereal. You think you can help me with that?ā€ she looks down at her son whoā€™s already looking up to meet her eyes. Macā€™s enchanting glimmering eyes instantly light up at the thought of responsibility, a trait heā€™s definitely inherited from her, and prompts an eager nod. Before she can even say or explain further, which he probably doesnā€™t actually need her to, heā€™s let go of her hand.
ā€œMore Fwuit Loops!ā€ he exclaims happily as his tiny legs take him ahead, down the aisle, to reach the mosaic of colourful cereal-boxes.
ā€œSure, if thatā€™s what you want, babe, but maybeā€¦ā€ she walks towards him, "we could try something else for once?ā€ she tries to not be too strict about her sonā€™s eating habits, especially when she knows Fruit Loops is usually the only straight up sugary stuff he eats daily, but also, she has to admit, secretly wishes she could perhaps trick him and Jake to eat something just a bit lessā€¦ candy-like.
ā€œWhat?ā€ he stops and looks at her with a frown. ā€œSomething else?ā€
ā€œYeah,ā€ she catches up with him and looks as the many options before him. ā€œLikeā€¦ bran-flakes, maybe? They look yummy, right?ā€
Either Amy is a really bad actor or her son simply too smart, but nonetheless Mac looks more than quite unimpressed when his mom pulls a boring, brown box out from the shelf to showcase it
ā€œI donno want brain-flakes ew, mommyā€ and the face Mac makes, a face of utter disgust, would be way more solid proof than a paternity test if one was needed - he is definitely, without a single doubt, Jake Peraltaā€™s son - and she definitely canā€™t help but chuckle at the similarity he constantly carries with him.
The tiny humanā€™s hand starts dancing across all the different packages, probably gathering himself a good dose of various germs that in the moment Amy canā€™t make herself care about, and every now and then heā€™ll stop to study a cereal thatā€™s caught his child-brain and eyesā€™ attention.
ā€œThere are so many to choose from, huh babe?ā€ she encourages but keeping her distance as to be supportive of him doing something on his own, independent like a big boy.
First he stops in front of the Cheerios, which Amy can totally be content with, but alas he quickly, to Amyā€™s chagrin, puts them back in their spot. Then come the Frosted Flakes with their blue box and cute tiger cartoon (the perfect child-trap) which, if possible, are even worse than Fruit Loops. Amy unconsciously frowns at the thought of having to rip the box of cereal from her sonā€™s grip when he in a few seconds wonā€™t let go and instead grab the Bran Flakes. But to Amyā€™s great relief Macā€™s finger continue their trip down past the tiger-trap, mindlessly mumbling small nothings to himself that she canā€™t quite make out. Then, all at once seeming way more determined than with previous ones, Mac throws himself at a bright and colourful box.
ā€œThese!ā€ he exclaims jumping up and down on the spot with the held over his head in victory.
As soon as she gets a closer look, having gently grabbed the box from her son, it dawns on Amy that Jake Peralta being the father of her child isnā€™t exclusively beneficial. Not when their child is asking for Sour Patch Kids morning cereal and Amy knows itā€™s because heā€™s inspired by his dad as Jake will gladly share his candy with his son whenever he happens to have some.
ā€œOh, babyā€¦ ā€œ Amy tries to keep up a neutral face as to not reveal how she dreads to get something thatā€™s somehow even worse than the king of artificial ingredients, Fruit Loops, and sultan of sugar, Frosted Flakes, combined. ā€œYou sure you donā€™t just wanna get the Fruit Loops then? I donā€™t think youā€™ll like Sour Patch Kids.ā€
ā€œYes I do! I eat them with daddy all the time!ā€
Of course.
Her son is completely oblivious to her dread and shines proudly thinking heā€™s pleased his mom by finding something new (which it is - Amy canā€™t deny that) to have for breakfast. And Amyā€™s mom-heart canā€™t get herself to contradict her sonā€™s persuasion of the fact that heā€™s accomplished the mission she set up for him. No way. Not when his face flows with pride like it does now.
ā€œOkay,ā€ she surrenders with a forsaken smile. ā€œWe can get these, but theyā€™re very sugary so only for weekend mornings, got it?ā€ she puts her hand forward as to shake on the deal.
Either itā€™s the handshake that takes his mind off of it, or her 3-year old actually somehow understands nutritional values, but he doesnā€™t flinch, doesnā€™t hesitate to meet her hand with his own, agreeing with her proposed deal. Immediately after she hands him back the box, itā€™s a mystery to Amy how such a simple thing can make her son that happy, he beams with excitement and basically hugs the box of sugary sweetness. Amy has to chuckle and then heā€™s off again to do his own little thing, prancing down the remains of the aisle chanting a made-up song, Amy guesses, to himself.
ā€œCereal. Breakfast. I love cereal. I love breakfast. I love mommy and mommy loves cereal and me and daddy and breakfast. Cereal, cereal, cereal!ā€
And to her, and Jakeā€™s, sheer luck Amy manages to snap a short video of it for them to enjoy and fuss about for years.
That same night, Friday, theyā€™re all lounging on the couch watching a movie. Tangled as per Mr. Macā€™s demand because ā€œFlynn Eugene whatever is really cool and the pretty princess hits him with a pan and the horse and green little thing are super fun too.ā€
So, needing no further arguments, they watch Tangled and snack on Sour Patch Kids (the candy, not the cereal) that Jake had bought on his way home from work after Amy had texted him about their adventure at the grocery store, attaching the video of their son singing.
Although, after a long day, by the time the lanterns in the movie light up the dark sky while Rapunzel and Flynn sing to each other, Mac is half, almost completely, passed out with his head in Amyā€™s lap and legs stretched across his fatherā€™s. Mommy stroking your face and playing with your curls turns out to be very soothing and sleep-inducing. Jake can also, if asked to testify, agree with this fact. Guess thereā€™s something special about Peralta-curls Amy simply canā€™t resist.
ā€œAmes, I think heā€™s asleep,ā€ Jake whispers discreetly throwing his wife a knowing smile when he notices his sonā€™s current state.
She, having not noticed being too busy watching the movie, looks down and sees, indeed, a sweet angel face with shut eyes and pouty lips that indicated that her son is, if not entirely, on the verge of being asleep. Nevertheless, every 30 seconds or so, his eyes will flutter just a bit, like tiny butterfly wings, as if heā€™s fighting to see the end of the movie - a movie heā€™s seen 134 times already.
ā€œYou want to go to bed, Mac?ā€ she coos leaning down to peck his temple.
ā€œNu-uh,ā€ he fights off the urge to say yes, Amy can tell.
ā€œYou sure?ā€ she tries again.
He nods heavily in her lap, shuffling a bit in an attempt to get comfortable enough to, Amy knows, fall asleep. But he canā€™t seem to find the right spot, is surely overtired too and both parents can tell itā€™s a matter of minutes before heā€™ll give in to either fall asleep on the couch or demand to be put to bed.
And theyā€™re right.
ā€œMommy,ā€ he mumbles in the most exhausted and soft soft voice that makes Amyā€™s heart flutter time after time. ā€œI love you but I wanna sleep - in my bed.ā€
Those three words, especially coming from Mac, will never seize to send a tiny jolt of joy and dopamine through her entire being. She chuckles softly stroking his back.
ā€œThatā€™s okay, baby. Weā€™ve had a long day. Let's get you to bed.ā€
ā€œOkay, I love you mommy. And daddy. Love,ā€ he passes out before he can finish the sentence and wonā€™t even notice his father carrying him to bed while Amy gazes after them with loving eyes.
Even three years in, four if you count the pregnancy, she canā€™t believe this sweet, beautiful and smart boy is hers. A bundle of love that is half her and half the man she loves the most (next to Mac himself, of course). Parenthood is an irregular graph with ups and down, but they have so much love that itā€™ll make up for the bad days and hard cases. In the very end the most important thing is that he, Mac Santiago-Peralta with his brown curly hair, tiny nose and deep brown eyes, is here and heā€™s theirs. Not only is he theirs but he is his own and he loves them, his parents, so much, every day. Plus, heā€™s so good at actually expressing it that Amy canā€™t help but feel like theyā€™re definitely doing something right. Sheā€™s proud to know her son is surrounded by so much love that it has planted a seed that everyday blooms within him, making him spill over and spread his care and love to other people.
So, yes, Amy Santiago is 100% sure: she is definitely the luckiest, most loved mom in the entire universe. Mac Santiago-Peralta will always make sure of this. Ā
What I Thought About that ONE SCENE fromĀ ā€œCovention
As promised after my "Young Blood, Old Souls" review, I am going to review the rest of The Owl House episodes that I missed. And now that they're all on Disney+ (WATCH ā€˜EM), I'm currently making an effort to rewatch every episode to gather my thoughts for each one. Unfortunately, they're going to be my general thoughts and won't include any in-depth analysis.
However, the episode "Covention" has such a great scene that I have to break down what makes it so incredible. I'm, of course talking, about the ā€œHallway scene,ā€ which is a definitive moment in Luz and Amity's relationship. And here's how:
(By the way, youā€™re gonna want this scene on standby while you read this. Because I have no idea how to get pictures from the episode and add them to a Tumblr post. And Iā€™m too lazy to figure out how.)
Luz runs off to find Amity: Keep in mind that Luz had no reason to do so. Amity treated our favorite weirdo like garbage, and Luz had every right to just let Amity sulk. And yet, she still goes off to check on her. Why? Because it's in Luz's DNA to help others when they're clearly in distress. That willingness to be a kind-hearted person is why Luz is one of my favorite characters. She has moments of drawing the line when someone takes it a step too far, but her heart is always in the right place when the time calls for it.
Where Luz finds Amity: It's odd how fans refer to this scene as "the Hallway Scene" because Amity isn't really in a hallway. It's more of a dark corner if anything else. However, the exact name of her location doesn't matter because it's how that location is shown that makes an impact, due to how it perfectly illustrates who Amity is and how vital Luz is to her. Here, we see Amity down and depressed while sitting alone in the dark, where Luz is watching while in the light. This very idea comes more poignant soon, but there are a few things I want to mention first.
Amityā€™s tone when Luz apologises: Let's give a round of applause to Mae Whitman, who did a great job at this moment. She perfectly captures someone who is trying hard to be angry but is too distraught that she can't completely hide her real emotions. You see it better when Amity snaps at Luz, and her expression briefly changes into something more sad than mad. It's a sign that she's capable of thinking against her "can't show weakness" mindset that her parents clearly drilled into. So kudos to everyone in charge of that.
ā€œYou made me look like a fool in front of the Emperorā€™s Coven. My future!ā€: Notice how she says, "My future." Not "My dream" nor "My desire," either of which would make it clear that it's something Amity wants. Instead, she says, "My future." Hinting that perhaps joining the coven isn't entirely what Amity wants. I'm sure that she's somewhat excited to do so (You don't make an adorable squee at the idea of joining something if you're not into it), but the way Amity says "My future" gives the impression that it's more of a requirement for her. That if she fails to do this one thing, then she will face a worse punishment than the tedious task of finding a new career path. And itā€™s the fear you see in her eyes that all but confirms this.
ā€œI have been working my whole life to get to the top!ā€: This shows so much of Amity than fans could have ever realized. First off, it reveals that Amity is more than just some snooty rich girl who tries to be better than everyone else to boost her own ego, like many other characters (Looking at you Boscha). Instead, we see Amity's reason to be the best is so that she can work hard at getting "her future." It also hints that she ever takes a break to be a normal kid, given the "my whole life" aspect of this line. This pretty much gets confirmed in later episodes, and it really shows how genius the show's writing is in the way it can be subtle and blatant at the same time.
ā€œSay it! Say youā€™re not a witch!ā€/ā€...Iā€™m not a witchā€¦ā€: This is Luz's arc for the episode, coming to a complete end. At the start, Luz fought back Amity's resentment with even more hostility. But after seeing how upset Amity is and exactly why she's upset, Luz decides to give in. You can tell it pains Luz to admit Amity's right, both from her tone and expression, but it's apparent that it is something that she needs to say. However, Luz doesn't call it a day after admitting what Amity demanded to hearā€¦
Luz performs her light spell: Instead, Luz meets Amity halfway by explaining her own situation in a peaceful manner. And this is what I meant when I said that Luz is vital to Amity. It's no coincidence that Luz's first spell is a light spell. She brings light figuratively, and literally in this case, to everyone she cares about. Look at Amity's face when she stares at the light spell. She's clearly amazed, and for a brief moment, we see more than that bully that she acted as in the beginning.
ā€œThatā€™s nothing. A child could do a light spell.ā€: But the sad thing about brief moments is that they don't last forever, as it doesn't take long for her "show no weakness" mentality to come back. This is shown through the fact that Amity physically, literally, retreats back into the darkness and passes Luz's accomplishment off as nothing special.
ā€œBut...Iā€™ve never seen it cast like that.ā€: And yet, Luz broke through anyway. Because now, not only is Amity curious, but she's interested enough to rebel against that toxic mentality for quite possibly the first time. It's here that we get a glimpse of the person Amity could be. The person she wants to be.
ā€œIt doesn't come naturally to me like it does for you, so I've had to improvise.ā€: And it's here where Luz once again sees a chance to get Amity to open up. A chance for Luz to find common ground and explain that while Amity thinks that Luz has it "so easy," the reality is that the opposite is true. That she also has to work hard, but she doesn't have a fear of failing when her efforts don't work out.
Amity unbinds the Everlasting Oath: I love this. Not only because Luz didn't have to ask Amity to do this, but also because Amity doesn't give a reason for doing so.Ā  Did she consider the duel a draw because they both cheated? Or did she finally see the person Luz really is and decided to do the right thing? There's no clear answer, and that's why I love it. Because even if it's the ladder, Amity can easily use the former as an excuse for why she showed weakness. And if it turns out that Amity did decide the duel is a draw, then it still works because it makes sense for her character at this point in the story.
ā€œHumans have no magical ability. But I doubt thatā€™ll stop you.ā€: Do me a favor: Read that quote. Don't just read it in Amity's voice, or read it as how it was said. Read this quote as exactly how you would say it if you haven't seen it before.
...
Did you do it? Because it looks like a compliment, doesn't it? Almost as if Amity is telling Luz that she does have the capability to become a witch. Despite her setbacks. Well, that's what this could be if not for Amity's tone. For it suggests that she's indifferent to Luz's success. But because Luz still broke through to the nice side of Amity that she wants to show to the world, Amity finds a way to try to be kind while giving the appearance that she's following her parent's mentality.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, yeah. This scene is f**king amazing. Through the span of a minute, here's what we get: So much development from Amity, why Luz is such a kind and supportive character, and the beginnings of their complicated relationship. This might just be the best, well-handled scene in the entire series, and it doesn't have elements of what makes recomend the show. There is no fantastic animation, there is no hilarious comedy, and there is no LGBTQ+ representation...Ok, there might be that, but you have to squint to see it. This scene is just two characters talking, and through their conversation, we learn and love so much more about them.
...
And yet, people STILL wonder why Lumity is the most popular ship of the fandom. It's because of s**t like this, people. It's because of s**t. Like. This.
(But seriously, though. This is a great scene from a great episode!)
FAVES and FAILS: The Vampire Diaries
So I have decided that since The Vampire Diaries has a spin off, The Originals, I am going to divide the characters based on where they appeared the most. So on this list I will be talking about the Salvatores, the Petrova/Gilbert line, the Bennets and Caroline, etc. but I will discuss the Mikaelsons, Hayley, etc. on their own list with the other characters that appeared on The Originals mostly. As always, spoilers are abound as I will discuss storylines and character arcs below, so be warned of that.Ā  In any case, hereā€™s my FAVES and FAILS for The Vampire Diaries.Ā
FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER: Damon Salvatore
Tumblr media
Could it be anyone else? I donā€™t think so. Heā€™s a delightful little sociopathic shit and I love everything about him. He is 99% id and 1% ego, if that, and even when I hated him, I loved him (god, I sound like Elenaā€¦). In any case, love this man, five stars, would recommend, chefā€™s kiss.Ā
LEAST FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER: ā€¦I think Matt Donovanā€¦?
Tumblr media
Ugh, itā€™s hard to pick between Matt, Tyler, and Jeremy, but I think it has to be Matt. I never enjoyed his judgey attitude against everything supernatural, he seemed pretty whiney most of the time, and he was just genuinely uninteresting for the majority of the show.Ā  Not into it. Pass.
FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER: Katherine Pierce (Katarina Petrova)
Tumblr media
I thought about giving this post to Caroline by default, but if it comes down to it, Katherine nudges her way into the top spot. Katherine gave no fucks, knew what she wanted and was unapologetic about how she went about getting it, and an all around bad bitch. Was she primarily evil? Yes. But, to be honest, it never really bothered me.Ā
LEAST FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER: Bonnie Bennet
Tumblr media
God, this woman was annoying. She was hypocritical, judgmental, and far too holier than thou for me to swallow her bullshit. She constantly played favorites with Caroline and Elena (Iā€™m sorry, you hold Caroline becoming a vampire against her for like two seasons, but when Elena becomes one, itā€™s not her fault? Sure.). She hated all supernatural creatures because they ā€œgo against natureā€, but itā€™s totally chill for you to perform sacrificial magic to get what you want, unleashing a terrible evil in the process (but itā€™s not her fault). How she nearly excommunicated Caroline just because she stayed with Stefan after Stefan killed Enzo, as if it was her fault in any way. How everyone treated her like she was a special little unicorn because sheā€™s a Bennet Witch and sheā€™s so magical, like, please, gag me. I could go on, but I honestly cannot be bothered. Hard pass.Ā
THE CHARACTER THAT DESERVED BETTER: Caroline Forbes
Tumblr media
She was essentially shunned by all of her friends and family for becoming a vampire, even though she didnā€™t choose to become one at all. Also, she was basically used as collateral damage for the entire Salvatores and Gilberts versus The Mikaelsons debacle just because Klaus liked her. She was always the second choice no matter what the situation was (unless itā€™s her being impregnated with magical twins without her consent and then guilted into carrying the babies, but poor Alaric just lost his wife. Iā€™m sorry, unless itā€™s your uterus, shut the fuck up). Iā€™ll just be over here doing what exactly NO ONE on the show did, and pick Caroline first.
DEADWEIGHT CHARACTER WE SHOULDā€™VE DUMPED IN 2009: Tyler Lockwood
Tumblr media
I couldnā€™t pick Matt twice, so Tyler, I guess. He was selfish, a terrible boyfriend to both Caroline and also Liv later, and if I have to hear that boy whine about his fucking sire bond one more time I will literally throw my laptop off of a bridge.Ā
UNDERHYPED CHARACTER: Lorenzo ā€œEnzoā€ St. John
Tumblr media
Honestly, heā€™s one of the one things that made the last few seasons of the show bearable.Ā  His delightful British rogue was a lovely way to fill the void that the Mikaelsons left in my heart, his devil-may-care attitude was man-made-manifest of what I was always thinking while watching the show, his BFF relationship with Damon and later Caroline was a joy to watch, and he was way too good for Bonnie.Ā
OVERHYPED CHARACTER: Alaric Saltzman
Tumblr media
He is marginally more bearable right now on Legacies, but he annoyed the shit out of me while he was on the first show. Does he hate vampires or is he best friends with them? Does he want to be a hunter or does he want to stay away from anything supernatural of any kind? Also, he (along with nearly everyone else) basically guilted Caroline into carrying his magical siphoner babies, which is a touch too icky for meā€¦
SHIP YOU WOULD SELL YOUR SOUL FOR: Delena (Damon and Elena)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Could it be anyone else? I never shipped Stelena, as I found both Stefan annoying and Elena too woe-is-me while she was with him. She made Damon want to be a better person and he made her embrace who she really was, monster and all. They had a perfect balance between themselves, and it was a joy to watch. He got the girl, guys.Ā
SHIP YOU JUST WEREā€™N THAT INTO: Steroline (Stefan and Caroline)
Tumblr media
They were just tooā€¦meh. I was entirely uninterested in them, whatsoever, and isnā€™t that even worse than a ship that you hate? I used their scenes for a bathroom break or to get a snack, as I was guaranteed to miss nothing interesting or important while they were on screen.Ā
CHARACTER YOU LOVE TO HATE/FAVORITE VILLAIN: Kai Parker
Tumblr media
What does it say about me that all of my favorite characters are violent psychopathsā€¦? Iā€™m just going to leave that to be unpacked with the future therapists Iā€™m bound to hire. Kai was the perfect evil. He was powerful, purposeful, and unapologetically demonic in the very best way. I could watch him terrorize my favorite characters forever and not get bored.Ā  Perfection.
FAVORITE STORYLINE: Stefan and Damonā€™s Brotherhood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you donā€™t think this is what the show was about at itā€™s core, youā€™re wrong. They loved each other, they hated each other, they died for each other, they killed for each other, and, ultimately, they let nothing and nobody come between them. If you asked me who Damon loved more, Elena or Stefan, I COULD NOT answer you, and isnā€™t that just the fucking point?!
STORYLINE WE COULDā€™VE DONE WITHOUT: Magical Babies
Tumblr media
I know that a major reason this was even a storyline is because Candice Accola got pregnant, but stillā€¦how? Likeā€¦she is a vampire..? She is unable to biologically changeā€¦? Like can someone grab me a biology textbook and explain how this a thing that can happen BIOLOGICALLY, please? I get that they are mythical creatures, so science doesnā€™t mean much here, but it just doesnā€™t make sense in any universe. Also, as I said above, the fact that Caroline was impregnated without her consent and then largely guilted into carrying the babies is a touch too rape-y for meā€¦
BIGGEST PLOTHOLE: Do they go to school, orā€¦?Ā
Tumblr media
Like, are they just compelling the teachers to not notice them not attending class like 90% off the time? Also, how do the people in Mystic Falls not know anything about the supernatural? Like, they arenā€™t subtle AT ALL so how do they keep sliding under the radar? Also, in a lesser way, how are hybrid witch/vampires a thing? Like, I thought if a witch dies (like they would have to if they become a vampire), they lose their magicā€¦?Make it make sense, Julie!
MOST HEARTBREAKING MOMENT: Damon Dies (the first time)
Tumblr media
Honestly one of the saddest moments in the entire series was Damonā€™s ghost watching Elena lose it when he doesnā€™t make it back from the Other Side. They were finally happy and together and they can only enjoy it for like five minutes before it goes to shit. Why, Julie??!
BIGGEST EYEROLL MOMENT: Magical Babies (again)
Tumblr media
I try to not use something twice on this list but COME ON. This was ridiculous and I do not support this in any way.Ā  (Also this twin bullshit is still fucking annoying on Legacies, if anyone was wondering).
MOST SHOCKING MOMENT (any spit-takes?): Elena forces Kathrine to take The Cure
Tumblr media
This was one of the moments that I literally gasped aloud. Most of the time the foreshadowing on these shows is seen from miles away, but I honestly did not see this coming at all. Also, Kathrine was basically the LAST person who wanted that cure so itā€™s crazy that she was the one to end up taking it and turning human.
MOST BADASS MOMENT: Kathrine kisses Damon at the end of Season 1
Tumblr media
Like I said before, she is the original BAD BITCH of the show (not an actual Original, but you know what I meanā€¦) and this was an amazing entry for the character who would be, largely, the villain of the series. It played on the feelings that Damon is developing for Elena, it finally introduced the person who started it all for the Salvatores, and it showed us exactly who she is at her core, and that she isnā€™t sorry about it at all.
SERIES FINALE SATISFACTORY LEVEL (use no words, just gifs):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OVERALL MARKS OUT OF TEN (10 being this show has changed your life for the better, you happily rewatch the series over and over, and the show has made your life better in some way. 1 being this show gave you nothing but trust issues, a stomach ulcer, and high blood pressure, and you honestly do not know why you did this to yourself)Ā
7 out of 10.Ā
I look back on The Vampire Diaries with the kind of fondness that only comes from a bizarre mix of nostalgia and incredulity. When scenes from this series show up on my instagram feed or on my Youtube recommended page, an involuntary smile creeps across my face without me realizing. I could do without like half of the characters and some entire seasons were completely unnecessary to watch, but it gave me some of my very favorite characters and ships, and spawned an entire universe that I still enjoy to this day. This magical, crazy, beautiful world was a joy to experience, even when it made me want to beat my head against a wall at least once per season.
Tumblr media
If you want to see the other ones I have made, here's the original post with links. x Ā Hope you like these! (I say to probably no one...)
Once Upon A Time Rewatch: 5x11 Swan Song
Tumblr media
Wow. Selling your kids into slavery, just wow!
Wait, how did Rumple get the wavy sword. Is that the wavy sword?
I canā€™t wait for Emma to stop being the Dark One, oh my God.
Wait, why is Zelena so sure the Dark Ones wonā€™t attack her?
Robin, that pointy arrow isnā€™t gonna do anything against the Dark Ones.ā€Æ
Why doesnā€™t Regina just teleport them away??
Aaah! Get away from Snowing!
Henry, run!
Why canā€™t they just stay away from the ferry?
This was really freaking awful of Dark Hook. I mean, even Rumple would never try to kill all his loved ones as the Dark One. What the hell?! He tried to Orphan Emma and baby Neal and kill Henry, whoā€™s a freaking child!! This was a step too far. I donā€™t know what the writers were thinking here. The very fact that he tried to kill Emmaā€™s son seems irredeemable. I donā€™t think a season 1-season 3 Emma would ever forgive that. I donā€™t even think season 4 Emma would. Itā€™s just unrealistic that anyone would forgive their lover for trying to kill their child and parents, consumed by darkness or not. Step too far.
I think fire and brimstone is worse than the Underworld, unless youā€™re to be tortured like Hook. Why did Hades torture Hook so much, anyway?
Is that the only time Regina calls him Killian?
They missed such a huge opportunity, not having Regina face her victims in the underworld. It had a good possibility for growth.
Itā€™s weird seeing Hook have power over Regina like that.ā€Æ
Didnā€™t Colin say they did it in that carriage? Or am I misremembering? Ah well, I like to think of them having had a few sexual encounters as canon. He totally did it with Cora too.
Oh God, this is horrible!! Her whole damn family! This was beyond cruel to all those involved.
Oh yeah. When Rumple went out back to get Excalibur, didnā€™t he tether it to himself or something. In that moment he made the decision to become the Dark One again, I think.
How the heck did she know how to find his father? And how mean, making it part of the deal that he kill a parent too. Maybe it made her feel better that way. Wouldnā€™t it have been easier to control one of her guards via their heart and force them to kill her mother? Or even to control Hook with his heart?
Zelena, baby, you canā€™t call your kid Pistachio!! Omg. Iā€™m headcanoning Robin Jr.ā€™s middle name to be Pistachio!
Regina really doesnā€™t like those name options lol.
ā€œThe withered knob of that sad old man.ā€ Oh my God!! Iā€™m screaming!!!!
BULLCRAP!! No your memory does not freaking serve because you have to use dark freaking magic to control that wand and your magic wasnā€™t dark enough!! Itā€™s nothing to do with power or believing in yourself, what the hell?! Regina must have done some dark crap recently to get that thing to work.
Zelena, just teleport away!
Zelena, noooo! Gonna miss her! She made this arc bearable!ā€Æ
Killian, for Godā€™s sake. Do something! Reverse it somehow!
How does he know thatā€™s not Liam? I guess the straight hair?
He left more than a century ago. Killian is over one hundred years old at this point! I worked it out with the help of Baelfire arriving in Victorian England after Big Ben was created and Killian is at the very least 130 years old at this point in time! The timeline this season has been horrendous!
Itā€™s very weird that that nurse ā€˜fell in loveā€™ with a sleeping patient sheā€™s never even communicated with and kissed him.
All this for freaking revenge. Leave the Charmingā€™s alone!
Iā€™m sorry? He doesnā€™t wanna hurt her?? He doesnā€™t wanna hurt her?? He wants to kill her entire freaking family! How is that not going to hurt her?
Heā€™s doing this to get revenge on Rumple or Emma? Both? Heā€™s saying he owes Emma, well then why doesnā€™t he just kill Rumple? Revenge achieved! He didnā€™t have to bring her family into this.
Killian: ā€œAnd now because of that you get to watch everyone you live die.ā€ Back the hell off!! Rumple had the darkness for years and he never would have killed Belleā€™s loved ones to spite her! Sure he would have killed her father but never out of spite for the person he loves!
Dark cs is so freaking toxic.
Killian: ā€œEnjoy the time you have left with your family.ā€ Get the hell out! Beyond evil! Nothing angers me like this episode! This was the final nail in the coffin for my love for cs. There was just no coming back from this in my opinion, especially because he acted perfectly normal before he remembered he was the Dark One.
Oh no!
How does Robin know the fairies will take Neal. What if no one thinks to look in the diner and he starves!!
Tbh I need to read an au where Emma raises her brother due to all this, though it will hurt like hell!
Henry: ā€œSo this is really it.ā€ Hook (smiling): ā€œIā€™m afraid it is, lad.ā€ I am going to swear!! This is so unforgivable!
It is kinda out of order that he called his third son Liam after what he did to the first. It does kinda seem like heā€™s replacing him.ā€Æ
That felt unnecessary. He just orphaned his little brother! He could have at least have made sure he was taken care of. How did Liam II age so much, anyway? I guess he wasnā€™t affected by the curse and wasnā€™t under Coraā€™s time freezing bubble somehow.
He should have absorbed the Dark Oneā€™s into the sword in the freaking first place!!
He did a 180 so fast.
How you gonna kiss him after he just tried to kill your whole family??! This was the first step in their relationship where they would just forgive each other for anything, no matter how toxic and would put their relationship above absolutely everything else, to the detriment of relationships with family. Like, he could quite literally kill her son and sheā€™d probably forgive him.
Thank God! Emma got rid of that ridiculous outfit and hairstyle!! I am gonna cry happy tears for days!!
Aww. Henry called Belle!
Belle to Rumple: ā€œyou lied to me again! *makes out with him*. For the first time you were truly selfless.ā€ Wtf Belle?! Did you not outright refuse to leave Storybrooke so you could get killed by a giant bear the other day because it was the ā€˜brave thing to doā€™, but then when your friends were in danger it was okay for Rumple to lie to you and tell you to leave? That makes no sense! This is kinda ooc and unrealistic. But then, is it ooc? Itā€™s certainly the quickest sheā€™s had a change of heart. And didnā€™t you just say you had to protect your heart from him like yesterday? I will never understand this woman. What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle. Is she on drugs?
She can still hear the dagger!
I donā€™t get it. Didnā€™t Excalibur crumble?ā€Æ
Rumple, why??
That small vile of magic was hella convenient!
Rumple has Emmaā€™s power as well as every other Dark Oneā€™s. Wow!ā€Æ
They are all bananas going to the underworld. Leaving their babies without parents for what could be forever! And taking Henry (a child!) to the freaking underworld where they might never come back and Rumple literally just said it was a place worse than hell, where youā€™d beg for death!
Fun family trip to hell!
Their feet are gonna get wet.
Emma, youā€™re still talking like that! Please, I beg of you, stap it!
Hell no. You do not get to take ā€œI will always find you.ā€!
Thank God this arc is over!! At least the next oneā€™s a little better, I think.
Appmon Ep52 Liveblog
Itā€™s the final episode! Our Singularity! There are several definitions of the word ā€œsingularityā€, but the definition that best fits the episode (and entire series) is: ā€œa hypothetical moment in time when artifical intelligence and other technologies become so advanced that humanity undergoes a dramatic and irreversible change.ā€
Tumblr media
another fancy quote. this one is from Clyde Sinclair.
Haru was falling off a building but heā€™s fine now because Gaiamon came and grabbed him. I actually think that this shot is really cool, how the camera dips down as Haru should hit the ground but then raises back up when Gaiamon catches him.
and everyone elseā€™s Appmon are back, too!
and now everyone elseā€™s Appmon are getting beat up. good thing they donā€™t have to worry about protecting humans anymore, because this city is getting torn to pieces.
I still donā€™t really get why Haru holds up his hand at Leviathan (i guess itā€™s supposed to be like, heā€™s so heroic and fearless now? i think Haru has just been running off of adrenaline ever since the antenna fiasco and isnā€™t putting a whole lot of thought into what he does.) but everyone calling out to their Appmon, even from such a long distance, is cool.
Minervaā€™s dead now, but now everyone has a cool power-up! itā€™s basically like a reverse version of the power-up that Leviathan threw around during the Ultimate Four arc.
this fight is super cool, and really well choreographed with all of the swooping around and the solid impacts that the hits have. and they knew it was cool, too, cause the opening plays during it.
and now after all that big talk that Leviathanā€™s minions had about the irrelevance of feelings and what the heart wants and how logic will always prevail, Leviathan subccumbs to the raw emotion that is the fear of death. ultimately, no matter how emotionless and logical someone pretends to be, they will always be influenced by their emotions ā€” we wouldnā€™t be living things without that.
aw man, I just thought of this... wouldnā€™t it have been cool if part of these power-ups had been fueled by an overdrive?
Leviathanā€™s body is destroyed now! this isnā€™t the end, though, but everyone thinks it is so they enjoy a nice moment of reunion and congratulations. So everyone hugs and hi-fives and stuff, Dokamon finally gets some affection, and Rei & Hackmon are just vibing!
i was gonna say something cheeky about how Yujin starts apologizing for what heā€™s done, but then I realized you can actually look at this as a parallel to Offmonā€™s profuse apologizing for some unknown deed from earlier on ā€” the way Yujin repeats ā€œsorryā€ even sounds like how Offmon would apologize.
but things are not over because Leviathan was scared of death so now Yujin is acting as a host for Leviathanā€™s remains.
besides the ā€œno more fear of deathā€ thing, I wonder why Leviathan is so enamored with the idea of a world without suffering or sadness? perhaps choosing to break away from the rules of humanity lead Leviathan to discover the depths of human suffering? maybe, like with the ā€œno more fearā€ thing, Leviathan felt a bunch of negative emotions and was like ā€œwell this sucksā€ and decided to get rid of them?
yep, change is a really important theme in Appmon. change for the better, change for the worse ā€” itā€™s what living things do
oh yeah lol then Leviathan turns that on its head and makes Haru choose between humanity and Yujinā€™s life.
but, in the end, to not have selected ā€œyesā€ would have been extremely selfish, not to mention unprotagonist-y. looking at it as sheer numbers, thereā€™s more value in saving lots of people instead of just one person... and, it would result in lots of people loosing those they care about. itā€™s one personā€™s valued relationship VS the valued relationships between billions of people, so of course ā€œyesā€ is the best answer... really shitty of Leviathan to make Haru make that choice, though. itā€™s good writing.
and now Haru knows what heā€™s going to do in the future (and what kind of high school heā€™s going to apply for) ā€” heā€™ll become a AI researcher so that he can try and revive Yujin after all this. itā€™s been only about a day since they had that conversation, after all, so itā€™s still fresh in his mind.
and Yujin knows that it would be horrible to make Haru willingly give up his best friend so he wakes his consciousness up and hits the button for him. so, despite Yujin not actually changing much through the series, he does finally make good on his App Drive question ā€” he gave up his life to protect Haru. though the wording of the question made it seem like Yujin would wind up saving him from, like, physical harm, he actually winds up protecting Haru from emotional harm.
Haruā€™s request to Yujin to somehow come back and be his best friend again is pretty illogical (how would he do that if heā€™s dead), but again I think Haru is mostly just running on raw emotion rather than any actual thought throughout this episode. which is fitting, I suppose, given the themes of emotion VS logic. plus Yujin is going to be back in like five minutes so *shrugs*
also, I think this part is sweet, how the buddy pairs try to console each other... itā€™s especially cute how Musimon tries to wipe away Astoraā€™s tears
and now itā€™s the near future and everything is getting rebuilt!
oh, the person watching the news is Unryuji Knight. i guess he doesnā€™t completely dissapear after the end of his arc.
oh, they actually go over the intended definition of singularity in the episode. I totally forgot since I was focused on everything else happening in the epilogue.
I canā€™t escape the feeling that Astora must get grounded or something sometimes after his videos. like thereā€™s no way he gets off scot-free for breaking pots or filling ponds full of fish with slime
at this point, the first time I watched this episode I barely paid attention to the actual happenings of the epilogue because, once I realized that no Appmon were appearing, the only thing I could think was ā€œand the Appmon? where are the Appmon?? they didnā€™t leave, did they???ā€. so this time, since I know the Appmon are still around, Iā€™m going to pay better attention.
Iā€™m really curious what the dissolving of L-Corp means ā€” was everything owned by L-Corp just shut down, or did other companies get to buy up L-Corpā€™s subsidiaries? because it seems really coincidental that Eri would wind up working with Elena and Alice again under a completely different idol firm, so I wonder if theyā€™re still working for Appliyama and it just got bought out by a new company?
and Grandpa Deneimon got put back in the real world. itā€™s never said whether everyone winds up telling their families about the Appmon or anything, so is Deneimon just living in Aiā€™s basement and Haruā€™s mom has no idea heā€™s still alive??
Tumblr media
and the Appmon are still around, much to the relief of my past self! everyoneā€™s still close friends, too ā€” they still hang out together in the bookstoreā€™s basement. and, they somehow managed to pull Offmon out of the wreckage of Leviathanā€™s body, and now Haru is careing for him. Gatchmon never really ever got over being annoyed-jealous at Offmon all the time, so I imagine that Haruā€™s home life must be real experience with those two around.
andddd Yujin is alive! somehow! itā€™s a little cheap that he magically comes back after Haru bases his future goals around losing him ā€” generally, if youā€™re really going to use a death for character development, they should stay dead. But, this is a kidsā€™ show, so I really canā€™t complain too much. and, soon after watching this for the first time, I did quickly cook up a theory to explain his return ā€” since Yujin befriending Haru was so intrigal to Leviathanā€™s plans, it seems like there would have been a way to revive Yujin if something happened to him so that the plan could continue. so, based on the assumption that when Yujin returns home for the day and his doorway scans his memory and makes it so his mom knows what he wants to eat also makes a backup of his memory, itā€™s entirely possible that his mom was also saddened by his death and decided to just revive him from a backup (which would leave him without any memory of what happened the day they caught Bootmon or anything after that), using that last complete-but-unused Yujin body that was shown a few episodes ago. thatā€™s my headcanon for what happened, anyways.
one last Haruā€™s birthday for the road :ā€™)
And thatā€™s the end of the show! I wound up really liking Appmon when I first watched it last August, to the point where I decided to rewatch it just a few months afterwards. And, lo-and-behold, I still really like it! Itā€™s not only a really good mon-genre show, with a lot of focus on the friendships between humans and monsters, but itā€™s also a really interesting look at the potential bonds of people and technology. So, Iā€™m really glad to have watched it again while doing liveblogs ā€” and Iā€™m proud of these liveblogs, too, since I wound up going way into depth on my thoughts and theories and headcanons for the show, so it was really fun! Iā€™m also glad that other people have enjoyed reading these, too ā€” ultimately, I do this just because I enjoy it, but itā€™s nice to know other people like it too. So, thanks for reading! And, also, if anyone wants to hear more of my thoughts on this stuff... Iā€™m open to discuss the show at any time as well!
