9. Of the Pregnant Woman Blessed and Spared the Birth-Pangs
"1. With a strength of faith most powerful and ineffable, [Brigit] blessed a woman who, after a vow of virginity, had lapsed through weakness into youthful concupiscence, as a result of which her womb had begun to swell with pregnancy. In consequence, what had been conceived in the womb disappeared and she restored her to health and to penitence without childbirth or pain. 2. And, in accordance with the saying 'All things are possible to those who believe', she went on working countless miracles every day without ever proving anything impossible."
-Cogitosus, Life of Saint Brigit (translated by Sean Connolly and J.M. Picard, 1987)

day 2: Royalty/Knight @mcyt-yuri-week
False, a knight famous for her ability to slay magical beings, was sent by her king to defeat the greatest threat of all - the fae. Here, she enters the faerie realm and is greeted by none other than the queen herself, waiting upon her forest throne.
Having grown up on tales of the fae and their evil trickery, False is surprised by how beautiful and kind the queen is, but isn’t going to let down her guard yet.
Queen Stress is rather impressed by this mortal who not only managed to find her way into the faerie realm, but is also brave (and foolish) enough to try and fight her! She has no intention of hurting False, and instead wants to teach her the mischievous ways of the fairies, get her to lighten up a bit and all that. And, well, if she tries to court the handsome knight along the way, who can blame her?

To all of the healers, protectors, nurturers, and empaths:
It's NOT your duty to help, save, or heal everyone. Some people just simply can't be helped or saved. Also, remember some people are getting the things that they dished out to others, back to them, meaning they're receiving and facing their consequences. That's something that they have to deal with on their own. 🤍

Artemis: l shall shoot them down with my arrows
Dionysus: you’d do that on my behalf?
Artemis: of course! the other day, a bunch of those “pro-life” freaks who bully people walking into Planned Parenthood went crazy in the head. you think I don’t know who’s behind that?

Well, the consequences for Jonathan's disobedience were quite terrifying, on top of destroying an aspect of Jonathan's beliefs as a character.
We already have seen plus noticed how Jonathan identifies with what femininity, and women represented in the 19th century. He is a male character that expresses so much love for the ideas of safety, and comfort that the feminine entails without the narrative trying to paint this in a derogative light anywhere.
So, it's not wonder that the visit from the Weird Sisters (a.k.a. the speculated brides, and housemates of Dracula) left him totally traumatized. Nothing that Dracula has done so far has gained such huge reaction from Jonathan.
Great God! merciful God! Let me be calm, for out of that way lies madness indeed.  ... for now, feeling as though my own brain were unhinged or as if the shock had come which must end in its undoing, I turn to my diary for repose. The habit of entering accurately must help to soothe me.
In his journey as a gothic heroine as he is trapped in the castle, Jonathan has been surviving by employing the same ideas used by fictional heroines he admires and looks up to in dire times, and he has comforted himself with Mina's memory, and his undefying love for her. Everything that Dracula represents regarding masculinity means danger for Jonathan, he is scared how the power that the Count holds over him; not as a man towards another man, but as a man towards a conceptual woman within Jonathan's mind that is part of his being.
All of this concludes in Jonathan taking a nap in the ladies' chamber room, away from Dracula's aggresive masculinity in his tainted designated room, and inside what he now deems a safe space because women lived there.
Then the Weird Sisters appear in their ethereal, beautiful glory, and as Jonathan recalls the incident in his diary, the feeling of angry loosing sanity is written with an underline tone of pure defeated betrayal. It feels as if Jonathan keeps asking himself "why did they do that to me? Aren't they in the same position as me?"
The feeling of what Jonathan calls repulsion cut through the sexually charged scene like a knife. All of the soft adjectives to describe the Sisters' appearance, Jonathan's attraction to them as he shames himself for thinking like that because of Mina, the emphasis of voluptuos charm laced with danger, all of it gets cut when Jonathan realizes what the Weird Sisters are planning to do.
There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive, and as she arched her neck she actually licked her lips like an animal.
The ladies that he thought were a dream at first are there to use him the same way that Dracula has been doing... the only difference is that the vampire ladies made very clear that they will kill him. So out it goes the kind language to describe women, and what enters is the language that Jonathan uses to describe the Count.
The femininity that Jonathan felt comfort in to shield himself from the horrors he has seen is now fractured to incorporate the monsterhood of the Weird Sisters. It's a realization that shatters him, not all women are soft, and kind, these women would have killed him if not the Count arriving, and if Jonathan cannot go to the Weird Sisters for safety against Dracula, then it means that the only being who stands between his death and life is the Count himself.
The man who is keeping Jonathan as a prisoner in everything but name is who he has to run to if Jonathan wants to keep living... What a nightmare indeed.

Thinking about the Chevalier interlude, specifically the inaugural team of Wards. Like in universe, they sell it to this first group of kids (and presumably the rest of the world) as a place for second chances, to find friends and mentors who understand what youre going through, where you can learn to use your powers safely while making good memories. The kids broadly seem to believe in these noble intentions of course, but what really gets me is that I've seen readers buy into it!
"Oh, it's such a tragedy that the Wards program became this awful thing that traumatizes kids even more, and expects them to die for the sake of civilians! It's fallen so short of what it was originally supposed to be!"
No it has not??? The fact that the triumvirate and Hero are saying it has this noble goal doesn't make it true. The Wards was pretty clearly always a way to increase the amount of bodies the prt could throw at threats, and we know this because it was started by the fucking Triumvirate as a part of the Protectorate! Alexandria literally came up with the idea of the Protectorate to legitimize the power of capes, and have a consistent source of heroes Cauldron could throw at problems. That is the whole reason for the PRT/Protectorate existing. So when we have this group of children brought in a subsidiary, there are 2 real options.
1). Cauldron and Alexandria decided they would be really niceys and created this program with no intentions other than helping these kids out.
Or 2). As things got worse, they realized the Protectorate didn't have enough manpower to do what they needed, and so they expanded it to include children (the demographic most prone to triggering). That way, they greatly increase the number of capes who they can send to fight and die as needed, and the ones who do survive their tenure in the Wards will be better trained when it comes time to join the actual Protectorate.
At the risk of sounding conceited, I think the second one is far more likely based on everything we know about Cauldron. Maybe it was originally a little nobler, and the goal was just to create more well trained heroes and cut back on young villains, but there's no way Alexandria, Doc Mom, and Contessa didn't factor in the ability to sacrifice the kid heroes if it improved their chances of success. That was absolutely a perk at minimum.
That's the real tragedy of the inaugural Wards. The kids were lured in with promises of safety, comraderie, and second chances like lambs to the slaughter. All the while, Alexandria and Cauldron knew that many (if not most) of these children would suffer abuse by the prt (like in the case of Reed), die, or face a fate worse than death like poor Mouse Protector. It's horrifying! The idea that they didn't know the danger these kids would be in is literally inconceivable. Especially when one of you is also the head of the prt! They knew, and they didn't care. It improved their chances at the end of the world, and so they did it no matter the cost.

Women are not protected in today's society, and they're not protected by m*n. Here's how the world would look like if women were, protected by m*n.
M*n would be creating systems that would euthanize, eradicate and dispose of every pedophile, predator and rapist. Society would be cleansed of them because they would be recognized as a major danger to women and their children, they would be the public enemy number one and disposed at even the first sign of predation.
Instead, pedophiles are given light sentences, only convinced if they've repeated offense and then allowed to walk free and commit more offenses. Media is led by pedophiles, and promotes pedophilia to the point where the society is so oversaturated, you can see pornographic views of children even in their own cartoons. Fashion, desires appearance of women, beauty standards and even intellectual standards for women are all set by pedophilia, women are supposed to emulate children or they are not viewed as desirable. We are living in a pedophile-led society.
Predators and rapists are not only allowed, excused, tolerated and not taken as 'real criminals', but they're often celebrated and approved of, by male police force, who will go over and beyond to disprove victims, to neglect rape kits, to find a way to make it women's fault. Intimate torture of women is treated as 'small theft' issue, even as it leaves women severely traumatized and unsafe. Not to stop at that, males have decided to take control of women's bodies after rape, and force them to bear children if rape has ended in pregnancy. They've managed to get rights over the children, to the rapists. This is not how 'protecting women' looks like. That's how torturing, exploiting, and pushing women into despair and trauma looks like.
If we lived in a society where women are protected, domestic violence would not exist. It would be unthinkable to lift a hand at a woman, let alone abuse or murder one. Hitting or injuring a woman would be an offense punishable by death. Woman in her home would be in the safest place in the world. Yet, one of the highest cause of female death is their domestic or romantic partner. Homes that have a male head of the family are places where women most often end up exploited, overworked, abused, emotionally abandoned, coerced or forced into situations where they're easily sexually assaulted, isolated, devalued, regarded as a servant, and ultimately, killed. M*n have not created a world where women can safely live their lives in nuclear families; instead the families were custom-made to enable m*n to have offspring and servitude from women, while doing ultimately nothing in return, only keeping those family members alive, sometimes not even that.
If we lived in a world where m*n protected women, pornography would not exist. Women's sexuality and intimacy would be sacred, and not something that could be bought, or taped, at the risk of women feeling uncomfortable, violated, injured, coerced, traumatized, exploited and hurt. The levels of injury, emotional damage, body harm and trauma inflicted on women during pornography is so high, they often have to undergo medical procedures, just to stay alive. They have to keep themselves inebriated or medicated just to be able to go thru such type of torture. In a world where m*n cared for women's safety, this level of harm would be unacceptable. Nobody would want to watch a woman get potentially hurt, violated, humiliated or injured in any way, there would be a huge outcry against using women as human sex toys and leaving them severely traumatized, just for someone else's pleasure.
If we lived in a world where m*n protected women, there would be no prostitution or human trafficking. Prostitution has proved to be not only traumatic, but deadly, slavery-like experience where they could get injured, violated, forced against their will and exploited at someone else's will. Women would never have to subject themselves to anything like that for mere survival. They would never be put in a situation where they would feel it's their only way, or only thing they're worth for. There would not be an industry of grooming female children into prostitution, because average age of entering prostitution is only 13. Nobody in the world would want to groom and brainwash the self worth of a 13 year old girl in order for her to be repeatedly raped. Nobody would even think of something so disgusting and inhumane. Nobody would be able to look at female children and women being trafficked without putting a stop to it. It would be unthinkable.
If we lived in a world where women were protected by m*n, wars would not exist. Not only wars are the sure ways to kill countless people that women have birthed and raised, causing endless pain to women who dedicated their lives to making sure those people are safe, nurtured, that they grow up and live to be someone, but wars have proven to be traumatizing and deadly for women, even more so than they are for m*n. Women end up in wars only without any training, protection, ability to defend themselves. And they're the primary targets of rape, torture, sexual violation and forced pregnancy. The highest count of victims in any wars are the civilians – and those civilians are often women. But instead of only being murdered, they have to deal with the insane possibility of being raped, tortured, impregnated and carrying some male monster's child, which is such unthinkable level of torture, a lot women commit suicide rather than be subjected to it. If we were protected, this would not, and could not possibly happen. No female child would be considered 'spoils of war' and subjected to rape from soldiers. No woman would be imprisoned or raped by m*n. Nothing in the world could make any m*n act this way, if they cared even one bit about protecting women.
Women are not protected. We are not safe, we're the first on the line to get hurt, and m*n have continually and relentlessly put every single action to protect our attackers, torturers, rapists and murderers. Women are abused in their homes, by the people who are supposed to love them the most. There are types of work that exist only to cause abuse to women, that expect women to take part in it, to pretend to enjoy it. Women's quality of life is expected to be low. Women are supposed to be inebriated and pretend that they enjoy it. Our heads are filled with how 'm*n protect us', but they don't, there are no indication that a woman was protected at any point in her life, by any m*n. M*n see us as property and will not put an effort to protect what they don't even think is human, what they don't think experiences pain in any meaningful way, except when they take pleasure in causing it.
We have to start protecting each other. We have to stand together, and make actions to keep each other safe.

Ares gets a bad reputation
I get he’s the god of war, a fucking home wrecker, closed minded and quite blood thirsty (again a war god)
but he’s also the protector of women and/or mistreated women (killed Poseidon’s son after he assaulted his daughter, we love that), a damn good father considering the shit face dickhead that is his father and the fact said father is said to hate him the most, freed Thanatos from Sisyphus

"Stop mother henning already." Clarisse scoffs, arms crossed and leg on top of the other, she sits by ares side.
They were once again welcomed to Olympus, the campers mingling with their parents, siblings and friends.
At the scoff, Percy glares. "I'm not mother henning."
A child from Demeters side pipes up. "You do go all mother hen on us sometimes, mom."
Percys face falls flat, he looks eerily like his father in those moments, and Clarisse cracks.
Her grin is broad and toothy, absolutely gleeful. "Especially after a fight, which you trained them for. Getting less confident now, aren't we?"
Bristling and grumbling, he points at her. "This is conspiracy against me. Did you put them up to this?"
Annoyed now at the accusation, the daughter of Ares drawls her next words. "The cheek comes all from you, shit head."
"Oh, I'll show you cheek," he grumbles, getting up, taking out riptide. "Where is the arena?"
In the end, they ended up beating the shit out of each other to the amusement and exasperation of the others.
("They do realise that we are their parents, right?" Apollo whispers to Will, who grinned back.
"Nah, let them have their fun.")
(Out of everything, a squabbling pair of ares and poseidon kids co-parenting while acting like a divorced couple was not on anyones bingo list. Alas it happened and now everyone looks forward.)

While there are critiques to be made about the Tortall Tricksters duet and I've seen other people with more standing make them, I do think it's interesting for Pierce to take the Great Mother Goddess who was the divine patron of her original main character and have her also be the patron goddess of a group of white supremacist colonizer villains. Like yeah maybe the goddess backing the armed enforcer of fantasy!Western Europe's royal family doesn't always have great politics. When Aly rebels against her mom she does not fuck around

Do yall think Artemis and Ares ever bonded over their protectiveness of women? Like they're both symbols of the protection of women, and Ares even killed one of his father's kids for assaulting his daughter. The two never saw eye to eye on a lot of things, but women were one of the few. Do you think Artemis' nymphs grew comfortable around him because they knew he was sage and wouldn't hurt them? Do you Ares was invited on hunts? I think about this a lot.
