#or my least favorite riddler comic

Sometimes I still have nightmares over Batman Prelude to The Wedding: Batgirl vs Riddler.
Almost all my problems with Rebirth Riddler come from that comic (is him my favorite Riddler? Not even close, but besides this specific story Eddie is still fun and I like him) and there were soo many ways to make it a good story. In five minutes I got three different - not necessarialy good - better ideas.
Firstly they could've just made it the start of an Oracle short series, it would solve a lot of problems in characther motivation. Make so Riddler discovered that there is a misterious voice that helps the bats and is actually the one solving his riddles and he grows obcessed over this voice. He sees them as matching intelects and being outcasts and he needs to uncover everything about them and so he lays traps. It becomes a story about Riddler losing it as he starts to question his self value in contrast to Barbara who is rediscovering her self-value as she discovers she can be more than a supporter and actually do hero work on her own even with her disabilities. I won't explain much more because while I think it could be great and could adapt some of the original story ideas it doesn't work as a Prelude to the Wedding story.
Second they could've taken the creepy crush and made it as Edward having a weird missplaced obcesion with family and done an Spoiler story with him creeping on the Browns. This one is mostly because seeing BatCat as part of the dream for a nuclear family is one of the few original angles it wasn't already explored in the Prelude stories.
Thirdly and the one who makes more sense in a Prelude to Wedding story: make it about Joker. And I don't mean changing Riddler to Joker or even featuring Joker in the story. Only that Joker is the motivation. Rebrith Riddler, specially in the whole BatCat wedding saga has a clear admiration for Joker that can even be seing as an unresciprocated crush, he planned his own violent defeat at the hands of Kite Man in WoJaR so Joker could laugh again for god sake.
For some reason this specific phase of Rebirth Riddler would do anything for Joker. And Riddler vs Batgirl even mentions that Joker did kidnapp Edward at some point to rant about Batman getting maried. If I recall corectly it was the explanation for how Ed knew Batman was getting maried. So leen on that. Joker is unhappy. All the Prelude shows that.
So Edward's solution is to try to antagonize other members of the bat-family to show Joker that he can always find a new nemesis. His whole showdown with Batgirl is about showing that they don't need Batman, in this version Ed's ramblings about love show his views of love as equasions and how everyone can be easily replaced. He choose Batgirl because she fitted most boxes on the things normal people would like about someone - just like Bruce, because Edward has no idea why Joker likes him and does what he does when he doesn't known, specially with emotion, he analyses it objectvaly and with data - and he is basically testing her to confirm his theories and turn her and Joker into nemesis. Barbara is of course horrified by all this. She wins and for a second Edward is elated. Because it was never about winning it was about proving that Barbara was good enough for Joker. Until Barbara says that if everyone can be replaced and love is a equation why didn't he let go of Joker yet. And he realises he did all that for nothing. If he didn't gave up Joker than why would Joker be any different and give up Barman? Barbara just like in the original tale ends up learning nothing except weird things about Riddler's psyque and just having a horrible day. But at least no one creeped on her for one day and then the universe forgot about it.
#riddler#edward nygma#batman prelude to the wedding#batgirl vs riddler prelude to the wedding#or my least favorite riddler comic#alternativally my least favorite barbara gordon comic#barbara gordon#batgirl#batca wedding#riddlejokes#it was not my intencion#but War of Jokes and Riddles messed with my head#it is the ultimate rebirth batjokes with a batcat ending#but what was the conclusion they were hoping we would make of Riddler masterminded his violent defeat so Joker would laugh#if not Edward pathetic uncorresponded love for the worst person ever#Rebirth Riddler#rebirth#I decided not to talk about Tom King Batgirl#or how Barbara looks like a teenager in the comic making Ed's crush even more creepy#and no my issue is not that they made riddler a creepy incel over Barbara#is that it lasted one issue not even the whole saga the comic was part of#Ed was a creepy incel once at random and that was it#like for a whole day Riddler decided he had a creeping crush on Batgirl based on nothing and decided to make it everyone's problem#he was never shown or implied to have any feeling for her not even romantic feelings just something#they barely interacted during this whole phase at all#it was just that specific day#it doesn't even work as he is using Barbara as a replacement to Batman cause the comic does it's best to show Ed as the cringiest cithet#and yes the Query and Echo thing hurted me personally#all for just one issue#if you going to make my favorite villan suck at least do it in a fun or engaging way or at least make it make sense

If you're a fan of The Batman (2022) I highly suggest this comic
Tumblr media
The Riddler year one
First of all, the cover is gorgeous and the art is phenomenal. Stevan Subic's dark yet semi-realistic style really works well with Edward's (The Riddler) state of mind.
Tumblr media
But it's also filled with pages from Edward's journal (?) And we can see his descent into his ideologies. At first its somewhat clean and readable but it gets more and more jumbled. There are even binary codes and I had fun translating them (most of them are just "the Riddler" and question marks, at least from what I got).
Tumblr media
And if you're obsessed with Batman like I am, he is too! Here are my favorite pages
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Your beam lights the sky and I look out the window. Waiting. Silently calling out to you. Just think what we could do together! It's getting harder to live with this. To hold this alone. In my darkest hours I need you, and your light is there for me. "
And (months?) later, when anticipating meeting him
"I wish I could tell you that I will turn myself in. I wish I could tell you not to worry, it's all part of the plan. That you and I will be safe aboard the ark. But I can't. This (the plan!) Is the only way for me to find you. (Believe me, I have tried.)
This is the only way for us to meet. It will all be worth it in the end.
Together we might call it a beginning. "
It reminds me of the Joker's obsession with Batman in The Batman Who Laughs (or anytime really), but in a more "we could be a great team" with a dash of parasocial relationship.
All of that to say, if you see this comic, grab it!
I got the book 5 out of 6 and it's not confusing at all, I'll be looking for the other ones.

So I just read your tags about Joker and how the hyper complexification of him annoys you and it was rlly nice to hear??
I personally enjoy the joker; but ive always thought he worked best as a simple character: he likes hurting people for the sake of it and he wants to slap Batman’s fat cheeks. That’s it.
(Also the whole “oh joker has SUPER SANITY and knows he’s in a comic” is my least favorite joker take. Joker is effective because he chooses to hurt people. If they’re not rlly people, his threat is diminished).
Whenever people make it so that Batman exists to stop the joker it always bothers me bc it just feels like they’re trying to water Bruce down to one relationship when a lot of his appeal comes from his diverse connections to others, his deep love for his city, and his insane levels of compassion.
Bruce cares about the Joker because he cares about all of his rogues, but as much as Joker thinks they have this deep connection, they don’t. Bruce is infinitely more connected to Two Face, Riddler, Ra’s, Catwoman… the list goes on. If anything, one could say half the appeal of Joker and Batman is how one sided their dynamic actually is.
Sorry to word vomit to you about Jokey, but I found your stance on him really refreshing. Anyways, I love your fanfics and especially your approach to Jason okay byyyyye!!
Honestly write that man like Jack from puss in boots the last wish

Let's talk about the DC animated movies.
I'm 28 years old and I still see them. So ...
DC animated movies I would make!
The Killing Joke
Tumblr media
Honestly, I expected more.
The animation is pretty good and fits the plot pretty well... There's just one small problem.
The film, like the Batman:Hush adaptation, has very little to do with the comic. And honestly, I watched both movies because I liked the comic and I was hoping to see an adaptation of them, and I didn't expect that result.
And there are many insignificant details in the movie, for example, Barbara's prominence, the best thing about the killing joke is the point of view of Batman and the Joker's relationship. And, as we all know, Barbara is a pretty insignificant character in this comic (I love Babs, but it's true)
After saying this, many of you will be thinking: "But if there is already a movie, why make another one?"
Well...
Well, to correct all the errors of the previous one!
One detail I hate about the movie is definitely the delivery of the joke. When the Joker tells the joke, he doesn't stop moving from side to side, gesturing, exaggerating. This detail was removed from the film, the Joker is next to Batman and only moves his hands.
The joker is a drama Queen, it deserves an adaptation in which it is.
Batman: Europe
Tumblr media
Oh~ One of my favorites...
I've been thinking about this shit for at least four years, and I'm determined, it would be the perfect movie.
We all know the perfect animation of movies like Batman: Hush (the only good thing)
And I have the impression that this animation (and the universe to which it belongs) has experimented very little with the relationship of Batman and the Joker, and what better opportunity than that.
Plus they have everything to do it. because? They have drawn all the characters in the comic:
Killer Croc, Batman, Joker, Bane and Alfie ( And Nina is quite easy to draw)
Besides, who doesn't want to see the best enemies AND lovers causing problems throughout Europe?
Justice
Tumblr media
Ahh!! So many plot twists!! I love it!!
Many of you will think that there are already many League movies, but these comics are a classic.
It's a comic that explores most of DC's characters, each one having a little bit of prominence and the opportunity to have a fight against one of their biggest villains.
Why this comic is not only about the heroes, the villains also have a great role in the plot.
Being able to explore villains like: Cheetah, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Riddler, Poison Ivy,...
And of course having appearances by the Joker and other villains in the background. For example:
Two faces, the ventriloquist,...
Of course, with a slightly darker animation, you know to give it atmosphere
Well, I hope you liked it!
Would they make another movie about another comic? Which?

Is BTAA riddler the batman the audio adventures riddler? If so, do you headcanon him as columbian american like his voice actor John Leguizamo or do you see him as something else?
Yes, to both questions!
Leguizamo voices one of my all-time favorite Riddlers, and like with Unburied, I imagine that the character takes after the actor in both physical appearance as well as personality. At least that's what I found to be true in the comics.

Riddlers with a s/o who really likes horror movies, old ones, news one, everything in between long as it's horror? Need to know who's ear I can talk off
"Riddlers and Horror Movies" Riddler party x Reader
Several of these riddlers share direct horror movie quirks with me have fun guessing which. Also listed favorite horror film(s).
TW: horror films, blood and gore descriptions, mentions of emotional self-harm
Gotham
He's the guy who is going to contradict and tell you every medical inaccuracy of the deaths and mechanics in the movies. Yes, of course there's suspension of disbelief but at some point things are just wrong.
Babe, that should be arterial blood but they're portraying venous blood consistency :(
If you don't mind him talking at length about how these things would actually go OR conversely how well the sfx portrayed real injuries, he is your horror movie buddy! None of it bothers him considering how many real life murder, suicide and accident victims he's had to perform autopsies on.
Cuddling with his gangly legs on the couch bundled up in a big blanket with you while the sounds of screams echo from the tv and fill the room. Huge smile. He especially old classics when you're in the mood. Black and white films and transatlantic accents... It sounds like a great night to him.
Favorite Horror Movies: Might be a surprise but he really loves "Freaks" from 1932. He will talk for a long time about how, even though many of the disabled actors were ostracized on set, the fact that they were present at all is significant. The ableist assholes get theirs in the end! He also has a lot of fondness for "Re-animator."
Btas
He's the one interested in the sfx rambles. What, you think he designed a video game and labyrinth for a theme park just because he's intelligent? He likes behind the scenes work. God help everyone if he and Scarecrow decided to get together to make a haunted house.
You ever see those huge animatronics in horror mazes, especially the huge end show pieces? That's where his interest goes.
Depending on how much you watch and express interest in that kind of thing, he genuinely might start making horror animatronics and programs. He has the know-how! His would be the realistic looking ones, especially for animals. Spooky but definitely based in forms you see in real life.
Well, beautiful, you might have helped him find a very profitable side gig. Everyone else might be sore at you for a while, though, given Edward scaring the fuck out of them with holograms and mechanics. Plus more team-ups with Scarecrow.
All this because you wanted to watch horror movies with him. His darling <3
Favorite horror movie: "The Thing" (1982) and while it's not his absolute favorite, he ends up enjoying "Willy's Wonderland" a lot for both the animatronics and video game nods.
60s
The old ones with little to no gore is fine! More modern hack and slashers might be a little too spooky for him :( definitely never show him "Hostel" or anything in that vein.
Truthfully, it's not the violence or the blood, he's seen that. It's the suffering that gets him. It all seems so pointless and needless. At least when he's attempting to cut batman into tiny pieces using a comically giant fan, there's a goal or point. In his mind, anyways.
Before dating you his idea of horror was "Dracula", "Frankenstein"... "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".... Start with horror that has a more comedic or cheesy element- "Little Shop of Horrors" to "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil." "Creepshow" 1 and 2 from the 80s! If you ease him into it and don't go too extreme, he'll love watching horror movies with you.
Favorite Horror Movie: OKAY THIS IS CHEATING BECAUSE IT'S NOT A MOVIE BUT. He'd be a HUGE fan of the "Tales from the Crypt" show from the early 90s (that is almost impossible to find streaming rip my horror uncle The Cryptkeeper). Horror plus puns. He will always take a funny, morbid pun! Plus... man can appreciate a cackle. He also has several opinions about the original "Suspiria."
Zero Year
It has to have something of a decent story or he's not paying attention. Where is the BACKGROUND? Sidenote: if you get him into something like Bloodborne (I know, not a movie) with lots of lore, expect to not see him for a hot minute as he consumes all the information he can like a sponge.
He tends to favor psychological horror- Although, if it means spending time with you and gaining favor, he would watch most anything. Especially if there's the possibility of close physical affection... ANYWAYS. He's also the one who wants to watch a bunch of foreign language film horror such as "Les yeux sans visage" in original French.
Another thing is that he will watch things over and over and over again with you if you want. Part of it is the undiagnosed neurodivergency. Part of it is because you always catch new details when you watch things again. Him noticing something that you didn't and him getting to tell you and impressing you is a special kind of high. He will talk about movies for hours afterwards. "Jacob's Ladder" has been a several hours long dissection MULTIPLE TIMES.
Favorite Horror Movies: "Angel Heart" is his top all time favorite. If you haven't seen it, he will practically tie you up to watch it together- He also really enjoyed "The Lighthouse" and "Us."
Arkham
Similar to BTAS, he is also interested in the animatronics. His, however, would lean to body horror and sci-fi. Something about biology and machine blending together... it gets him kind of excited.
He will sit and work while watching you play something like Deadspace (sorry, a game again) for HOURS. Then he wants to watch the prequel movie with you. Also if you don't mind subtitles, he has this recommendation for "Tetsuo: The Iron Man" if you haven't seen it already. And if you haven't... You are in for an experience.
In short, this man is about the body horror. He likes other horror too, but that's his bread and butter. Sci-fi horror as well. Bonus when there is overlap. He's seen "Annihilation" at least twenty times and has the books dog-eared and rough from multiple reads somewhere in his belongings. Yes, they are ultimately different, but he's in love with the concept enough that to him he appreciates both.
He is going to scare you with animatronics he makes. Sometimes intentionally. Sometimes not. Have fun with that.
Favorite horror movies: Cronenberg period but he has a special fondness for "Videodrome" and "The Fly" (1986).
Telltale
Despite it being an excellent movie, he despises "Jacob's Ladder." It brings up too many unpleasant thoughts. Movies, especially horror, with medical experimentation are a trigger though he'll never say it out loud. You find this out as you discuss watching certain movies and see the connection between all of them.
That being said, the horror movies he likes have two themes: they have meaning/ a message or they involve transformation. The first is because anything too simple bores him. The second is totally absolutely NOT because of projection of his own trauma.
Show him "Get Out" and "Nope" and he gains a deep reverence for Jordan Peele as a writer and director. Intelligent, entertaining, and the perfect amount of horror mixed in. Kind of a fan, only you know, really.
80s version of "The Fly" makes him emotional and you probably only watch it once with him. He likes it a lot! Just... the slow transformation via a science accident is very relatable. Madness overtaking you.
Favorite horror movies: "An American Werewolf In London" it's a classic. Not to mention in his opinion one of the best transformation scenes in a movie.
2022/nashton
Ha... so here's the thing. He likes "Hostel" and movies like that with lots of violence and gore. He's even seen "Wolf Creek" and got some real excitement out of it. HOWEVER. Movies in that vein are a form of emotional self-harm for him. He likes them in the moment but they also usually trigger massive anxiety and depression episodes for him later on in the day/night.
Others like "Se7en" (I know it's a thriller not true horror), "Saw" and the like are usually okay. There's a distinctive difference that may only exist in his own mind, but the more you watch with him, the more you'll find out which movies are "safe" for him. Which is good! He does like horror movies, but as we know from the prequel comics, he's not always good at taking care of himself due to massive amounts of trauma.
He loves films that are gems that aren't super well known in the US when he can find them. Have you seen the Korean horror film "The Silenced"? No? You're in for a treat.
He likes movies that have a logic or puzzle to them. Complex mechanics and traps. A sick sense of justice dispensed.
Favorite horror movies: The "Saw" series. Also "The Collector." He sees the upside down shot with the reflective contacts and the spider allegories and his eyes dilate like a cat seeing it's favorite toy.

1, 2, 3 and BTAS! Scarecrow?
Awww now I can complete the dork squad since I did BTAS Riddler and Mad Hatter on the other character ask game post lol
1. Why do you like or dislike the character?
I like this character, especially this particular version is not only because he was my first introduction to the character, but also I enjoy how lively and fun this scarecrow is. Very dramatic, very fun, and has his endearing moments too.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
I will say his voice is probably one of my favorite voices for the Scarecrow. I also appreciate his tenderness you see to Harley and to his students we see in the comics every now and then.
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
I'm sorry but I just sometimes still can't get past that very first scarecrow design with the hot dog-esque mask I much prefer the one later on lol

Red Hood, other Anti-Heroes/Villians and the issue with killing in comics.
First here's the thing before you read this, I just wanna say this isn't a post complaining about if killing is good or not, far from it so don't worry.
Tumblr media
I also wanna say really like Jason Todd. One of my favorite Robins though I like him more as Red Hood. My only issue with him is that DC is stuck with his direction as a character(Not as much as Tim at least). For a lot of reasons
One of those things is that anti-Heroes don't work in main superhero universes at least in DC, in Marvel killing isn't looked down on much unless you do it like the Punisher(Consistently, no exceptions and extreme)
When I'm talking about Anti-Heroes I mean who don't hesitate to kill, because the definition of Anti-Heroes even include guys like Batman, Spider-Man, Iron man and Daredevil (Classical Anti-Heroes,Disney Anti Hero,) talking about the types like Huntress and Red Hood(Unscrupulous Hero) and Punisher (Nominal Hero).
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Analysis/AntiHero if you wanna know what I'm talking about.
Tumblr media
An issue they have is that they kill criminals consistently, and those criminals include supervillains but in comic books, villians in comics are kinda a commodity. Villians are what makes the heroes. So DC obviously will never let Jason kill the Joker or Riddler or Poison Ivy or Bane, or let Frank Castle kill Green Goblin or Kingpin. That's getting rid of a commodity that writers need for stories.
It's why I laugh when people say why doesn't Batman kill the Joker or something, they won't let him guys. Joker is too popular to kill same with the rest of his rouges, the writers need the villians to continue writing more stories and if time has taught us anything is that new villians don't even catch on most of the time to replenish the old popular ones.
So Frank and Jason and left to keep offing mooks, looking stupid and incompetent for not taking out the actual threats or just offing D-listers, it then brings up the question of why doesn't JASON kill the Joker since he's always talking about how willing to kill he is. yeah sure they'll write Batman like the biggest dick to fight him not too but there has been times when nothing has been stopping Jason to do it, see what I mean?
There's also another thing that DC and Marvel just won't let chracters less popular than the big no kill rule big heroes be more effective (and this is coming from a guy whofor the most part is anti killing). You really think Marvel is gonna let Red Hood have the moral high ground with Batman or Punisher with Spider-Man or Captain America?
But yeah I don't wanna get into the whole 'should heroes kill debate' here just making a point.
This is why they honestly work in outside comic universes like the games or movies. See the 'Superhero Movie Villains Die' trope
Tumblr media
Basically they just don't mesh well with the status quo nature of comics.
So now we have heroes/villians(yes I consider frank a borderline villian) who are known for killing but can't kill anyone significant for multiple reasons, like how Red Hood by the New 52 had like 83 kills but no one in there was anyone actually important.
This is why Punishers best run was in an entire different universe where heroes didn't exist so he could kill Kingpin without issues. With Punisher they can always stick with that or just do what they usually do and make him take out mooks and barely developed rouges. They recently made him the head of the hand and gave him superpowers, it's actually interesting in my opinion.
With Jason it's more complicated. There's two sides, he drops guns and killing and joins up with the bat family as a kind of character development or he unrepentantly leaves the bat family behind and starts killing people and using guns then runs into all the issues I mentioned above. The latter side believes that hum dropping killing and guns removes everything that makes him interesting while the former believes it's good character progression for him to drop it. I think both have good points.
Personally I think they should lean into the supernatural side of him, like go all in and make him the dude in the Batfamily that handles supernatural threats, his the only one in the family that has straight up superpowers (Edit: forgot Duke, forgive me but he got them before him so point stands I guess) with his All blades so take those and have him to team up with Zatanna or Constantine, fighting vampires and zombies. (Happy to see they are doing this with Cass kinda I haven't read Spirit World)
Or they lean into the Task Force Z/Outlaws/DCeased aspect of him leading other Mistfits, Anti-Heroes and Villians into becoming better people like with the thunderbolts from Marvel. Maybe hook him up with some kinda of government connection so people he kills aren't illegal during this redemption quests or something.
Well I've got nothing else to ramble about.

Bruce: Did you spend the evening at Mad Hatter’s place again? Robin!Dick: Yup! He baked cookies and he invited buddies for his tea party! Since Victor was there too, I had tea, cookies and ice cream. That was super fun! Oh by the way, Jervis started renaming you the ‘Jabberwocky’, I hope you don’t mind? Bruce: Not like I had a choice in the matter... _____
Bruce: What do you mean, you had dinner already? Where were you? Robin!Jason: I hanged out at Eddie and Jon’s place! I thought I told you. I spent the evening playin’ Star Wars video games with Ed, then when his Spooky Scary Skeleton arrived he started cooing at him like an enamored schoolgirl. That was frankly embarrassing but also hilarious. Jon invited me to stay for dinner, Ed spent the whole time watching him with adoration and giggling when he spoke ‘bout his new experimental toxin formula. I really need to do something to bring those two together! Bruce: Great, now you are playing romance adviser for Riddler and Scarecrow... _____
Bruce: You did what for Penguin?! Robin!Tim: Mr Cobblepot has been enchanted to benefit from a little help from someone who has business savvy to order to optimize the repartition of his accounts and separate his mob boss schedule from his legal activities in his restaurant. He recruited me as his assistant, and so far he tells me every day I am a talented, brilliant young man with a promising future ahead of me. I like him a lot. Bruce: Sure you do... _____
Bruce: Why are you visiting him at Arkham every day?! Robin!Stephanie: Because I am super proud of him, why else? Plus he needs someone’s full support! Eddie is finally reforming for good but the procedure itself will take many more months, he needs to be encouraged at each step! Tomorrow I’m bringing a box of his favorite sweets, a detective comic and a science article he will entirely criticize, that’ll be funny. His doctor doesn’t want any riddle-based stuff in his cell, but I found other entertaining books. What B, did you forget Eddie is my dad, my mom, my big brother, has been my imaginary friend when I was little, is my childhood buddy and remains my all-time beloved BFF? Bruce: Unfortunately, you told me so already... _____
Bruce: Where do all those cats come from? Robin!Damian: Miss Kyle’s cat Isis had babies. She showed me how to care for kittens in her, Dr. Isley and Dr. Quinzel’s shared lair. I nursed them and watched over them the previous three months, that’s what I did whenever I pretended I sneaked out to ‘hang out with Collin’. Now that they are of age, I am adopting the five of them! Bruce: ... At least they’re cute.

Year of the Bat - Number 30
Welcome to Year of the Bat! In honor of Kevin Conroy, Arleen Sorkin, and Richard Moll, I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” throughout this January. EPISODE QUOTE: “My, my. Can we actually have a brain beneath that pointy cowl of ours?” Number 30 is…If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?
Tumblr media
This episode acts as the first appearance and origin story for Edward Nygma, a.k.a. the Riddler. The story begins with Nygma working as a programmer and video game designer for an electronics company, run by a greedy sod by the name of Daniel Mockridge. Nygma has created a best-selling puzzle-based video game, called “Riddle of the Minotaur,” where players have to traverse through the legendary labyrinth of the Minotaur, evading various traps and solving various puzzles along the way. Mockridge fires Nygma, who – due to a loophole in his contract – loses all rights to the game and any legal grounds to even receive royalties. Furious, Nygma adopts the guise of the villainous Riddler, and goes on a quest of vengeance against his old employer. The Riddler, for those who don’t know, has always been one of my absolute favorite Batman villains – second only to the Joker himself. (I should also add this was LONG before Paul Dano’s version; I liked the Riddler before it was cool, as the kids say.) I think that John Glover’s portrayal, from the animated series, might have been the very first version of the Riddler I ever saw. I remember renting a VHS tape from a Blockbuster as a little boy (yeah, anyone remember those things?) which had two of Riddler’s episodes on the tape. Both of those episodes, perhaps not coincidentally, are on this main countdown. You would think, with all that said, that this first outing for the criminal genius would be much higher in the ranks. Well, it’s hard to say why, because there’s certainly a lot to enjoy about this episode. Glover’s smug and smarmy Nygma is one of the chief versions of the character out there, and set the standard which many later incarnations – both in and out of comics – would look to for inspiration. The team behind the animated series took a character who had been perceived as “a two-bit gimmick villain” and transformed him into one of the Dark Knight’s cleverest and most cunning adversaries. The tricks and traps (and, of course, the riddles) that the Riddler uses in the story are also pretty ingenious. I also have to say that the ending of this episode is just phenomenal; one of my favorites in the entire show. I won’t give away what it is, but trust me, it’s great. I think the big issue is the Riddler’s origin itself. I like the idea of the Riddler being a programmer and game designer, and they use that to great effect in later stories, too. It’s also something that’s continued to be part of the character, with him being gifted with electronics and technology. However, I feel the turning point for the character doesn’t quite match: while it’s clear that Nygma always had a high opinion of his own mind, and loathed humiliation, it’s hard for me, personally, to make the jump from “disgruntled employee” to “highly theatrical supervillain,” at least in the way the episode presents. The animation is also sort of…iffy, to say the least. Most of the episode looks pretty good, but there are some scenes where the animation or the shots feel a bit “messy,” or a bit “stiff,” for lack of a better word. Still, these are minor nitpicks on the whole: for a first outing of my second favorite Batman villain, this certainly made a good impression. I probably wouldn’t like the Riddler as much as I do now if it weren’t for this episode.

man, i really dig your jason characterization in the kei-hayate crossover fic— the crime boss aspect feels like it’s being played very Right to me, if that makes sense? i also really really really like the disconnect between where hayate is as a chuunin of konoha with how that looks in… if not “normal” society (cape comics usual suspension-of-disbelief aside) then close enough, lol. and kei bridging the gap… the hayate pov bits are probably my favorite, though, for said aforementioned reasons. it’s just really funny.
the joker like, lurking in the background due to his relevance to jason todd in general and occasionally being referenced but not appearing directly reaaaally has me 👀 though dkdjjdjd obviously whether he takes the stage himself or never shows is yet to be seen…! excited. THIS is a genuine question though: has hayate actually run into any costumed villains yet? the league of villains are like… pretty comparable to what he’s got plenty of experience with, and organized crime is organized crime, and shinobi can of course be extremely flashy as well, but costumed supervillains as a category of person at least to me seem like they might make him look twice a little. at least the weirder ones.
My main rule of thumb when writing Jason's mob boss tenure is that even a criminal organization is an organization. They have a hierarchy, and logistics issues to solve, and occasional staffing problems. Jason's more involved here than he seems to be in the Under the Red Hood movie, but that's because he has to be. You can't just (literally) decapitate part of upper management and expect things to run smoothly without finding some new people to do the job.
That, and Jason does genuinely care about keeping his boot on the throat of the criminal element within his territory. Crime Alley has been a neglected sore spot on Gotham's map for longer than he's been alive. And if he gets to clear out some of the actively deleterious elements of Gotham's crime scene in the process, starting with Black Mask, then that's a bonus.
Hayate has run into exactly one member of the costumed supervillain crowd. It's his roommate. XD
On a less flippant note, Hayate's been kept from even most information about supervillains primarily because the Red Hood vs. Black Mask mob deathmatch is occurring during a Rogue lull. Most of the big players are either keeping their heads down (Riddler) or stuck in Arkham/Blackgate right now (Joker). If they were actively causing problems, either Jason would have to tell him some things, or he'd go look up the info on his new phone. But thus far, that hasn't happened.
I'm glad you're enjoying the ride!

Speaking of the good comics, which ones are those or what ones do you recommend?
Okie! ✌️ I'll list my absolute favorite ones!
Tumblr media
Batman Chronicles #3 (1995) / Riddle of the Jinxed Sphinx.
This one is actually a mini-story in a comic filled with three mini stories. (The other two being about Zsasz, and Croc) - but that doesn't matter. Despite it being a short story, you get a good look in Ed's head. This is actually a take on the "Eddie tries to give up leaving riddles behind". Which there's been at least three of those I can recall. Most people know of the one based on the Animated Series / New Adventures of Batman & Robin. And while that one's good. This one's the best because it focuses on Riddler more rather than Batman and Robin trying to figure out if Eddie's actually giving up riddles or not. It's also more realistic to OCD compared to the other one(s) which does it in a sillier manner. I'd go into depth as to why, but I don't wanna spoil anything.
That being said...
Tumblr media
Batman Gotham Adventures #11 (1999) / The Oldest One in the Book!
Even though, imo, it's not as good as above, I still recommend reading it regardless! It has a very emotional ending, and it still has some characterization points I like. (Dealing with Ed's shame regarding his mental illnesses). Which is funny, given that I actually dislike most of the Gotham Adventure comics with Eddie because they also watered down his character to be a money grubby thief and nothing more. (When that goes against everything about Animated Series Eddie from the beginning - who didn't care about money / tried to kill a greedy CEO)
Tumblr media
Batman #23.2 (2013) / Solitaire
May be my FAVORITE Eddie comic. Maybe. Also you'll notice it's one of the few recent / post New 52 comics I'll add to this list. It's such a satisfying read.
Tumblr media
DC Strange Love Adventures (2022) / Dinner for Two
EDDIE IS CANONICALLY BISEXUAL HELL YEAH. A short story in a comic with many short comics (most of them are Movie Baits) but this one is so so so so fucking good. Probably the best Riddler comic in the last nine years or so (at its time). Which is sad. But it's a comic that truly understands what a lonely person Eddie is. Which I wish more comics would acknowledge that. Amazing read. It's the last one in the book, though.
Tumblr media
BATMAN #608-619 (2002) / HUSH
If you read this one expecting Riddler - just know you won't see much of him. But by god, the moments you DO see him? Totally worth it. Jeph gave a new concept for Riddler, and how he could be a WONDERFUL villain. Unfortunately DC discarded all of this.
Tumblr media
Batman Confidential #26, #27, #28 (2009)
A Batman and Riddler team up comic! Although there are parts I've felt were contrived, this is a VERY enjoyable one that's three parts. Eddie and Bruce's dynamic is just so fun and hilarious (in a good way!) And Eddie's characterization is also entertaining as hell. It helps show how Bruce and Eddie can help each other, too.
Tumblr media
The Brave and the Bold #183 (1982) / The Death of Batman
ANOTHER Batman and Riddler team up comic, though older! This one's also a blast just because, again, Eddie and Bruce's dynamic is so entertaining. But Bruce's patience seems to be much thinner in this one, because he snaps at Riddler A LOT. They also share some pretty hilarious back and forths.
Tumblr media
Detective Comics Annual #8 (1995) / Questions Multiple The Mystery
In this one, Eddie finally opens up to an Arkham psychiatrist, and tells his story. Whilst this one, unfortunately, goes with the "Eddie is a cheat and cheated in school" concept - the rest of it makes up for that. I also feel it has some good depictions of his psychosis. May even been the first comic to show him struggling with psychosis? But I can't quite remember that.
Tumblr media
Gotham City Sirens #3 (2010)
About a reformed Eddie. And man, he just has some good development in this is all.
Tumblr media
Gotham City Sirens #9 and #10 (2010)
This one has many reasons why I love it - like how I love most of these, it's another comic that gets deep into his psychology. And for once, depicts Eddie as beating himself up / talking down on himself rather than the generic "I'm THE GREATEST PERSON ALIVE-" I guess what I'm saying it also feels like a more realistic depiction of NPD.
HONORARY MENTIONS
Tumblr media
BATMAN ZERO YEAR (2013) ... YEAH THIS ALSO WENT ON FOR LIKE 12 FUCKING ISSUES
I didn't love this comic. And frankly, it was definitely dragged out waaaay longer than it needed to be. That's because they literally wanted this to go on for a year (as comics release monthly) But imo, it took way too long to start and takes many issues in before it gets actually interesting. But I bother to mention it here just because it's one of the very, very, very few events where Eddie's the main antagonist. (Other than the War of Jokes and Riddles - but you'll never see me recommending a Tom King book) So props to him. And it still has some fine moments.
Tumblr media
Batman Legends of the Dark Knight #185-189 (2005) / Riddle Me That
EMO PLASTIC SURGERY RIDDLER. MY BELOATHED. I literally have a love/hate relationship with this one. Riddler's design, and his characterization was just... okay???? And it's way longer than it should be. This was an attempt to rebrand the character to Appeal to the Modern Kids - and kinda spat on Eddie's old design, plus everything Jeph Loeb did with Hush. Which all failed. However, there are still some things I really enjoy in this comic. For one, it MIGHT be the first to retcon the "Eddie's a cheat / Eddie cheated in school" and instead changed it to that he was a victim of gaslighting by jealous parents. I would say it may be the first time Eddie was depicted as an abuse victim - but I don't know if it's credited to this comic, as it seems like that's just an idea DC must've had in general. As Alex Ross' Justice also mentioned him being beaten by his father for "cheating/lying," and Batman 2004 cartoon also depicted Eddie with a bad father (though the abuse was watered down due to being a kid's show) so it seems like that's just something DC told everyone they were doing with Ed's character or something. Anyway, despite having several glaring issues - there are still moments I love in this comic, regardless. Read it with caution, I guess.
Tumblr media
JUSTICE #2 (2005)
While part of a short series, I've only ever read this one. It's an enjoyable one! Ed's intelligence is also credited in this one. However, I like it for it also mentions the abuse Eddie went through. It's also where I got my URL from.
Tumblr media
Catwoman: Lonely City (2022)
A Catwoman comic? Why? Because Eddie's drug abuse is mentioned (also since it's a future, it's revealed he got clean <3) and he also fucks Catwoman. What more could you want?
There are more I could recommend. But these are, imo, the very best ones. Of course, I will also recommend watching the Animated Series (he was only in three eps </3) as well as checking him out in Arkham City and Arkham Origins - as those are my fav Eddies in those games.

Duela Origin: Version Two
So we’re gonna go back after this and do her full 70s run, but since we’ll meet a new version of Duela tomorrow night on Gotham Knights, I thought it would be a good idea to cover her 2nd origin first. (We might also have a post on Gotham Knights Duela, if I either like her or hate her - neutral feelings don’t generate blog posts.)
Duela’s second origin is provided in a flashback, basically (granted, a nearly issue-long flashback) in Countdown Presents: The Search for Ray Palmer: Crime Society in 2007. By this point, Duela has been murdered. This issue is set in Earth-3, which Jason Todd, Donna Troy, and Kyle Rayler are visiting in search of Ray.
Earth-3 is an alternate universe where the characters have swapped moralities. This story follows Jokester, the good Joker, who fights Owlman, the evil Batman, and Talon, the evil Robin.
Jokester used to date a woman named Evelyn Dent, who eventually disappeared. Years later, she reappears with two new personalities, a husband, and a teenage daughter - Duela.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sorry, I think part of a panel got cut off here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I do think this was a clever nod to Duela’s original thing of pretending to be different villain’s daughters - here, she’s Two-Face’s (well, Three-Face’s) daughter, Joker’s (Jokester’s) daughter, and Riddler’s step-daughter.)
This little intro establishes that Duela sometimes hops universes without understanding what she’s doing or how. Her presence in the wrong universe - the main one - is what ultimately leads to her death. Which is an event we’ll cover someday, probably.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jokester really enjoys having a daughter, until she introduces her boyfriend to the family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Duela and Talon run away together, eventually landing in our main universe. I don’t know what happened to Talon there, since he barely made an appearance (we’ll cover that eventually, too), but Duela, as previously established, died.
Shortly after, Riddler, Jokester, and Three-Face get in a fight with Owlman, where Riddler dies, and Three-Face seems to, though we find out at the end of the issue that she’s still alive.
With nothing else to live for in his home world, Jokester joins Jason, Donna, and Kyle, hoping that Duela has gone to some other universe, and he’ll be able to find her again.
That’s where this issue ends - later, he’ll find out Duela is dead, and then die himself.
This is by far my favorite post-70s Duela appearance, which is unfortunate since it’s, you know, post-mortem.
(I don’t think this appearance is consistent, as far as characterization, with her appearances in the time leading up to her death - immediately-pre-mortem Duela is violent, erratic, and insane, where this one seems a little weird, likely due to her accidental universe hopping, but ultimately like a sweet kid. To be fair, though, we have no idea how much time passed between running away with Talon and the events leading up to her death, or what ended up happening to Talon in that time. It’s possible that several years have passed and she’s been through significant trauma. She doesn’t appear to be significantly older, but her aging went way wonky in the 80s, and that’s briefly addressed in at least one later comic, so it’s possible that’s still in play and she’s several years older than she looks.)
Anyway. Come back next time, when we hop back to the 70s and Duela meets the Teen Titans. (Unless I do a Gotham Knights Duela post first.) (Or I don’t have the energy to write something in time, in which case we’ll go with a pre-loaded collection of Duela appearances.)

the riddler for character asks!
Hi! Thanks for the ask!
Favorite thing about them: Bruh, he is a villain who use enigmas and puzzles?? That'ts like one of my favourite things ever! Do you know how many times I played the Professor Layton games lmao
Least favorite thing about them: Uh, maybe his design in his first apparitions and Batman Forever? Or the fact that he changed hgis name to "Ashton" in some comics (goodbye my dear pun...) Honestly the Batman's Villains are usually one of the best things in DC Comics
Favorite line: This is always hard to choose so here are 2 I love
"'Stealing' is such an unpleasant word. I prefer 'acquiring.' It's much more aesthetically pleasing to the tongue."
"And they say I'm the one with the ego. It's not always about you, Batman."
BrOTP: Him and the Penguin or him and Gordon in Gotham (haven't watched all of the show, I didn't like it but I like them from what I remember)
OTP: Riddler x Penguin
NOTP: I dunno tbh
Random headcanon: Transman, transman, OF COURSE HE IS TRANS HIS NAME IS "ENIGMA"!! (Ed(ward) Nygma = Enigma!!)
Unpopular opinion: I don't know if it's unpopular but I think Cory Michael Smith did a pretty nice job when playing him.
Song i associate with them: So, remember when I talked about Professor Layton lmao
youtube
Favorite picture of them: I think he looks cool in the first pic and I love his actor and his glasses in the tv show lol

if you're still giving us your uh completely honest opinions: who is your favorite and least favorite version of Eddie and why?
Based on my completely "honest" opinions that are 100% true my favorite version of Eddie would have to be War of Jokes and Riddles. I love his desing, the question mark scar is not even a bit stupid and dark aproaches to Riddler are my cup of tea forever and awalys. OBD Riddler is a likely contender as well. There are other Riddlers I think I might enjoy if I properly read like the red one I adore when he hurts childrem.
Now my least favorite being "honest" is really hard. There is a lot of Riddlers that mean very little to me. Unburied Riddler is a likely contender specially because Unburied revived my love for superheros after the MCU destroyed it wich is just a terrible fate. Who wants to be a comic book fan?
P.I Riddler. I just hate detective stories. Specially with moraly ambiguous detectives. That's why Lemony Snicket is a characther I hate soo much. Sherlock Holmes dreadfull? My spotify is full of mystery podcasts because I just hate them soo much I need to watch them all.
Gorshin's Riddler is one I truly hate. As everyone knows I'm completly against light takes or fun. It's either overly dark or shouldn't exist. And Gorshin is just too silly. And the stimming? I don't want my characthers to be full of moviment even less in a autistic coded way. Hate hate hate that.
Arkham Riddler. He is edgy enough but he is just too fun and too complex and the voice acting is too good. It's wrong. The puzzles are not annoying but still while I ADORE finding that FUCKING TROPHIES everywhere. I don't think they make sense or add to the characther or are a good thing at all.
There is others but this is the major ones. I just hate a lot of Riddlers. He is my least favorite Batman villain and that means a lot as the only Batman characthers I like are Arnold Flass and Lock Up. Actually I hate most DC characthers. Unless when they are facist. Frank Miller's Batman my beloved.
That's all.
