[It's] a dangerous conception of mental hygiene to assume that what man needs … is equilibrium…. What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather a striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal…

"Need Satisfactory Conditions to Grow," Kingston Whig-Standard. May 15, 1933. Page 9. ---- Mental Disorders Constitute One of the Great Social Problems ---- MONTREAL - Prevention of mental disorder and. delinquent and criminal behavior lies not in finding a new drug or growth but in providing satisfactory conditions for healthy mental growth and development -in recognizing and dealing with significant behavior deviations as they occur in the development period, and in the recognition and correct approach to adult individuals who are showing slight or serious personality or mental disturbances That this is a fundamental society problem was emphasized by Dr. W. T. B. Mitchell, director of the Mental Hygiene Institute, Inc., at the annual meeting here.
"Probably there is today no social problem which rivals it for seriousness and importance. Any organized medical or social work effort which is failing to provide satisfactory leadership or guidance in the sphere of mental health is seriously inadequate" Dr. Mitchell said. "Some degree of mental health is one of the most frequent causes of individual social failure. "Attempts to rehabilitate such individual social failures, except through an intelligent plan for treating the underlying conditions, are bound to be costly. wasteful and disappointing" he said. Nearly 900 cases were treated at the Montreal Mental Hygiene. Institute during past year. These included a wide scope of various new types such as suspected mental disease, mental depression, attempted, suicide. nervousness and fears, seclusiveness, sensitiveness. peculiar behavior, epilepsy and fainting spells, physical complaints enuresia, speech defect. suspected mental defect, school failure. unmarried mothers, social failure and martial maladjustment; stealing, temper tantrums, sex problems, truancy. disobedient, uncontrollable. mental health study, vocational guidance, and psychotic parents.

the 2 in 1
This stench,
I reek of sadness
A shower would do me good
Lingering in my tattered
Heart
Is a miser
Not a man
1/2 a steak
2 fries too many
I feel sick that those
Memories overshadow
our finest moments
Breathing each other in
skin on skin
The stillness
of the unfettered arousal
Building new pleasures
transformed by
An indelible bond
How Fast
Rosy hued
Shackles
enslaved me to
One version you
As my mind navigated
blights of insults
A deluge that followed
Our every meeting
the sky's
Pleading denied
the toxicity of your nature
burrowed
its way into my
Bones
Maybe if I use that men’s two in one
you bought me
I’ll find the nerve to wash
You away for good

it's never too late to start brushing your teeth again. i basically never brushed my teeth for a whole 10 years. a decade. A DECADE. i still struggle to brush my teeth once a week, but it all started with brushing my teeth once every few months. so i mean it when i say brushing your teeth once a week, a month, a year, or even a decade, is better than nothing.
and still, nothing is not shameful. it is not immoral to struggle with self care. and it is also not pointless to keep trying. anything you can do, even if its wiping plaque off with a towel, is enough. it is good to take care of yourself however you can, even if it's just trying to muster the will to. reading this post is good, too.
i believe in you and i am proud of you, even in the smallest of steps. it's okay. you can give yourself grace.

reblog if you think these are all valid reasons for a student or an employee to take a day off from their school or their job without their grades or paycheck being affected in any way:
- period cramps
- exhaustion, be it mental or physical
- depression, anxiety, and other mental health related issues

News, LARP writing, Pomodoro
News, LARP writing, Pomodoro
One of my writing group friends suggested I try writing in 30 minute sprints, with a little (also pre-measured) time off between sprints for breaks, other work, other projects. It’s a minimally different variation on the Pomodoro technique. I’m surprised I hadn’t learned this work method before. I was hesitant to take their suggestion. I usually struggle to fall into the zone that I find so…

"INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. HAD SUCCESSFUL YEAR," Toronto Star. June 10, 1912. Page 15. ---- Chief Inspector Hughes Spoke in Favor of Superintendent Ferrier. ----- OFFICERS WERE ELECTED ---- Heredity and Environment the Cause of Ninety-Five Per Cent. of the Cases. ---- Supt. Ferrier, of the Victoria Industrial School, was warmly championed by Chief Inspector Archibald, of the Police Department, at the annual meeting of the Industrial School Association on Saturday afternoon. Referring to the investigation of the ill-treatment charges laid against Mr. Ferrier and the adverse criticism of his methods of maintaining discipline in the school, the chief inspector said:
"There is not a man in Ontario better fitted for the position of superintendent of the Victoria School than Mr. Ferrier. I challenge any man in the Province to put his finger on any act in the past twenty years. during the time I have known Mr. Ferrier, of which he or his friends need be ashamed."
Inspector Archibald congratulated the chairman of the association on his refusal to "sidetrack" Superintendent Ferrier because of some adverse criticism. An attempt had been made "by some small, adverse creatures to criticize the noble work done by Mr. Ferrier."
The stamp of approval was placed on Inspector Archibald's praise of Superintendent Ferrier by the hearty applause from the majority of those present.
The cause of trouble at the school, Inspector Archibald declared, was the change made by the Government of Ontario when the maximum age for boys at the Victoria School was raised from fourteen years to sixteen in order that boys might be transferred from the closed-up reformatory at Penetanguishene to the Victoria School.
Praised By Another. Mr Wilson Fenton also spoke briefly in praise of Mr. Ferrier. "Critics are often not well informed," said Chairman Fergusson in touching on the trouble at the school. Encouraging reports were presented at the meeting, which was held the grounds of the Alexandra School for Girls, off the Kingston road. Superintendent Ferrier's report stated that during the year 170 boys had been admitted, 150 handled or transferred; highest attendance 325, average attendance 300. Boys on parole still under the guardianship of the school numbered 480.
Miss Brooking, superintendent of the Alexandra School, stated in her report that on May 1st there were 105 girls in the school, 50 had been admitted during the year, and the average age was fourteen and a half years in most cases, two or three years too late for the best results. Seventy-eight girls had been paroled. The superintendent referred to the splendid work done by Miss MacCowan in her teaching of eighty girls, whose equipment ranged from absolute illiteracy up to entrance standing. They had to be handled in the one class and under the greatest difficulty, nevertheless five out of seven pupils passed the entrance last June, and similar success was expected this year. Five of the older girls had also been given a business course under Miss Gray.
Music Students Did Well. The classes in music Miss Brooking said, had been most successful. Attendance at them was a privilege to be secured only as a reward of merit and very seldom did a girl lose her place after she had once secured it. Laundry work, housemaid's work, dining room work, kitchen work. and sewing were also taught, though the management is much hampered by lack of room, the laundry built for 45 row accommodating 125.
In closing, the superintendent said: "Speaking roundly, 35 of our cases were the result of gross neglect, and 15 of evil companionship, in many cases following bad heredity. Evil heredity and often worst environment are responsible for ninety per cent of our cases - and fully sixty-five per cent have had absolutely no fighting chance. And this is what the Alexandra Industrial School exists for - to give, if it may be, to these young human creatures, upon whom is thrust the terrible responsibility of life, a decent fighting chance, to implant sweetness and light. and the beauty of holiness in these young lives, which are or have been barren of every influence, but that which is evil, never forgetting that, in the mud and scum of things, there, always, always, something sings, and that it is ours to find that 'something." and set it free, and develop it, till at last it becomes something fit to grace the garden of the Lord."
The Officers Elected. The election of officers and directors of the Industrial School Association was announced as follows: Mr. G. Tower Fergusson, chairman; Mr. Beverly Jones, treasurer: Mr. W. J. Hendry, secretary; Mrs. Robert Kilgour, directress of the Alexandra School: Directors. Messrs. W. G. Jaffray, F. J. Stewart, D. J. McKinnon. Wm. Houston, W. Foster, J. J. Eaton. Mrs. Sandford Alley. Dr. Skinner Gordon, Mesars. W. J. Davis, W. F. Chapman, Mrs. S. Caldecott. Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Wilson Fenton, and Mr. George L. Robinson.
At the close of the meeting a most interesting exhibition of marching, club swinging, and motion songs was given by the girls. The club work was most clever, many of the figures having been invented and taught by the leader, Lauretta Maxwell, to the other six girls taking part. The playIng of Pearl Storey was also a feature, as was the appearance in costume of Matilda Jameson as a Welsh girl, Bessie Kennedy and Mary Bates as Irish giris, Grace Cameron and Pearl McTaggart as Scotch lassies, and Lily Bedford as Britannia. The various national hymns were sung by the girls as introduction to the tableau.

Been thinking about that discourse over Eddie smelling bad and
I agree with everyone saying that this is incredibly gross and classist and just generally incorrect, but this ain’t about that. Someone said, offhandedly as a joke, that Eddie “doesn’t use 9-in-1 shampoo” and I had a thought. I get those a lot.
Imagine that yes, he doesn’t use ‘9-in-1,’ but he does use a very generic store brand shampoo. Which works perfectly well! His hair is clean, shiny, and smells amazing. I’ve used the generic stuff many times in my life and my hair has never been anything less than fucking fabulous. But our dear Farrah-Fawcett-Spray boy Steve gets very Shocked Pikachu Face about it.
They get into an (extremely mild) argument over this, with Steve reasoning that proper hair care is important, and Eddie countering that he’s done it this way for X amount of years already and his hair is FINE thank you very much (a fact that Steve, with how much he loves running his fingers through said hair when they’re in bed, should be well aware of).
Until Steve, caught up in the moment (or so he says later), turns to Wayne, who’s sitting off to the side reading a newspaper, and says “Wayne, back me up on this!”
And Wayne - beautiful, balding man that he is - slowly lowers his paper and says, completely deadpan, “Son, look me in the eye and then ask me that again.”
(Years later, Eddie still won’t let Steve live it down, and bringing it up just gets even funnier to him the older (and balder) Wayne gets.)

If you are someone who struggles with dental hygiene due to mental health issues or neurodiversity and you just can't seem to change your routine or motivate yourself, I highly recommend investing in the right tools for you. Often advice starts with "Just form a habit! Just set a reminder!" but these things are not always enough to help when there are external stressors that cause avoidance.
An electric toothbrush and small portable waterpik have been amazing for me. I hate flossing, I find it tedious, and painful, and I avoid it. A waterpik on the other hand is fast, easy, and extremely effective. I also didn't realize how tedious I found brushing until I got an affordable electric brush. It helps do the majority of the work for me, feels nice, and has a timer to help me brush for the right amount of time. I hated mouthwash because it always burns my tongue, so I switched to alcohol-free mouthwash that doesn't.
These small changes have vastly changed my relationship to dental hygiene. If you can't get yourself to the bathroom, keep your brush by the bed. If you hate mint toothpaste use kids toothpaste with a more gentle flavor. If you need to have a brush on the go carry Colgate Wisps. Stop trying to force yourself to fit into an uncomfortable system, instead try to build one that fits your needs.

Btw it's okay to half ass things. If a task seems too big? Half ass it. If it seems like too much effort? Don't put in all the effort. Just put in the effort you can. Cleaning your room is too much but it feels gross to be in? Clean your desk, or the floor, or the dresser, or whatever. It doesn't need to be all at once.
You can half ass things. It's better than not doing it at all. I love you, you've got this. <3
