#mental health representation
Text
Having survived abuse from people with mental illnesses, I know the urge to warn others to be wary of those mental illnesses. I know how often it can feel like that is your only power in life…the only action you can take against what you went through. But listen. Just because a mentally ill person caused you complex trauma, doesn’t mean you get to generalize and slander and malign every person with that mental illness.
You do not have to forgive your abusers. but you do have to heal without spreading stigma and misinformation. you do have to heal without antagonizing or dehumanizing others who are also just trying to heal. you have to help break the cycle. because nobody can heal alone.

TW: discussion about the suicide attempt in season 2 of The Wilds
————————————————————————
The second Leah said “I don’t think I meant to like end it all,” I knew how the rest of that sentence would end.
“I just wanted to stop the feeling” is a thought that many, many people who have struggled with their mental health have had, myself included.
And I just gotta say, having that character, the character:
-whose mental health is used as both comedic relief and a serious obstacle (an accurate reflection of how many of us view our own mental health struggles, depending on the circumstances)
-who is known by her peers as both very intelligent and mentally unstable (but like affectionately)
-whose entire arc this season was internal, focused on trying to maintain a sense of sanity when placed in a decidedly not-sane situation
-who starts the season with an attempt on her own life
that character is the one who ends the season with an flashback reveal montage of her plan, the one who realizes something is off before anyone else, the one who takes on some seriously mind-fuck half formed theories and actually comes close to unraveling the whole plot.
Leah being the galaxy brain character is so important because on the days when I feel like just because I have Sad Thoughts TM and Significant Personal Trauma TM, I’ll never be able to have the career/relationships/life I want, I can remember that Leah Rilke hallucinated the object of her sexual awakening playing a piano and used that to plot and scheme her way past some Very Smart Adults.
Idk it just feels important to me that the character who started the season lost in her own mind not only found her way out but also outsmarted some very smart people.

looking to publish my WIP somewhere...
my current WIP (which is the one I'm wanting to publish) is Your Average Fangirl, it follows an anxious fmc that goes on tour with her favorite music artist. it follows more of a YA romance plot line with a slow burn where he falls first and harder <3

I finally finished Heartstopper season two. I honestly, love so many aspects of it, I could write a wall of text about it. But I really just wanna talk about the end diaolgue between Nick and Charlie, Charlie telling Nick about his self harm. Nick didn't ask him to stop for him, or make it about himself, he didn't try to guilt Charlie for it. He just wanted to know when it was happening so he could be there. I truly, truly, truly need more people to act like Nick did during this scene.
I just haven't seen people really talk about this scene yet. I think it was an incredible scene, not just that, but I think it gives a good example of how to react to someone telling you they self harm.

I just want to say in general, do not take mental health advice from ACOSF. Exercise and mindfulness meditation definitely help, but you also need to learn how to neutralise the negative thoughts that drive harmful behaviour. You also need a positive support system, which she doesn’t get until later in the book. In some cases you might need medications to balance your serotonin or dopamine levels. This might not work in a fantasy book, but I believe the other things could’ve been worked in there more effectively.
Basically, if you’re as mentally unwell as nesta is after the war, exercise and mindfulness are not likely to be enough to recover. I think that the end of the book captures this somewhat effectively because she still feels unworthy but I guess that’s enough for the ic. Idk if this was intended by author lady (tm) but probably not.

How Does Finding Nemo Deal With Themes Of Disability?
Finding Nemo is a film that deals with themes of disability in a nuanced and sensitive way. The film portrays physical disability, mental health, and the challenges faced by those with disabilities in society, in a way that is respectful and empowering. The characters and scenes in the film demonstrate the importance of determination, trust and self-confidence in overcoming disability and they…

I've just finished The Charm Offensive, and I'm struggling to express what this book has done to me, but I will try anyway.
The whole story is so deeply moving for me. Such amazing queer and mental health representation.
I love Charlie & Dev. I see myself in both of them, especially in Charlie. All the obsessive and intrusive thoughts he had were quite often just mine, and I had to take a moment. Their self-love and self-discovery journey was so beautiful. How they took care of each other, when nobody else had tried before. How they understand each other. I want a partnership just like that. Where you can open up to them and vice versa, defy your inner demons, and feel safe and understood.
This book takes your broken self-worth and shows you what you deserve. You're not a burden. Be you, love who you want, choose yourself. You don't need to be perfect.

thank you so so much alice oseman for helping me find a healthy way to talk with my younger sister about her eating disorder and our other numerous shared mental health problems, now she feels safe to speak to our parents and other family members about it and voice her opinions on herself and how she should proceed in a way that is safe for her pace and physical health. i love how your books have so much mental health and queer representation, and how it helps hundreds of people to see it in media by letting them know that they are not alone, no matter how much they feel like they are. thank you so much, and i cannot wait till season two of heartstopper and the next notification of heartstopper from tapas. thank you alice oseman times the number of stars there are in the universe.

in preparation for posting my WIP on AO3, I've been working on designing some cover art (though I'm not even sure if you can put a cover on AO3?? if not i guess the cover art will be more of a vibe lol)
here's a working summary for Your Average Fangirl:
Maeve can't help but wonder, how old is too old to be obsessed with a music artist? Last year, she won a concert ticket and meet and greet with Jace Alexander, aka jxce. Before this, she had no idea who he was or what music he wrote. Little did she know that one concert would change her life for the better.
Jace's music came to her when she was in one of her darkest times, and he pulled her out of it with the opening chorus of his title track, glowing silence. In person? He's everything she wasn't expecting. Sweet, kind, and genuinely down to earth, it didn't take much for her to be wrapped around his finger.
When he goes on tour less than a year later, she's bound and determined to make it to as many shows as possible, even if it only ends up being three. She buys two meet and greets and can't believe it when he recognizes her immediately.
Little does she know, she's all he can think about - and the only one that can pull him out of a rough place.

Modern media will be like we’re going to get such a good grade in mental illness representation :) and then the protagonist will be someone who’s tragic backstory is just that they had a mentally ill relative who made their lives hell simply by virtue of existing and needing support because mentally ill people are only ever an unsustainable burden on their loved ones and should kill themselves dead bc everyone would be better off w/out them :))))

A thing I've noticed in My Moon Knight re-reading.
Medication for neurological problems in the MU? Is CRAP.
EVERY TIME the Moon System is said or implied to be on medications that "quiet" the voices -that is to say, there's only Marc fronting-, Moon Knight goes... very, very, VERY violent.
Whenever they're left to their own devices and peaceful co-conciousnes? Moon Knight is one of the most well adjusted heroes in the MU.
That is not the right message to send re: Medication. It's almost as bad as Gotham City HIGH rate of highly educated Villains.

Oscar Isaac’s reactions to a reporter’s nonchalance about an earthquake in Taiwan is hilarious 😂
-
So Oscar Isaac begins the interview, cheerfully waving hello…
Tumblr media
…and saying, “Hi, Taiwan! I hope you enjoy Moon Knight! 😁”
The interviewer goes, “To explain, because now we are having a huge earthquake now… 😅
Tumblr media
…so if I’m gonna run or something so don't be…”
In shock, Oscar says, “You’re having a huge earthquake?! 😨”
The reporter replies, “Yah, very huge. It’s now still shaking!”
Now in utter disbelief…
Tumblr media
… Oscar goes, “What the hell are you doing still talking to me then?!” 🤣
The reporter giggles and replies, “It’s okay! 😆” Without missing a beat, she freakin’ LAUNCHES into her interview like it’s no big deal: “And so, my first question is…
Tumblr media
…um, did you do any research for DID and Egyptian culture before…”
Tumblr media
Clearly and hilariously taken aback, Oscar says, “Sorry, I can’t get over that you’re in the middle of an earthquake right now.” 🤣
The interviewer responds, “It’s okay, because we are kind of accustomed about… [the biggest] has already hit a few minutes ago…”
Oscar is rendered speechless:
Tumblr media
He then goes, “Okay, alright, I hope so…
Tumblr media
… I hope there’s nothing hanging above you right now!” 🤣
The interviewer tells him, “Yeah, actually I’m just moving to my, y’know, my door, and I just say, ‘No! I have my interview first!’ 😝”
Poor Oscar 😂 he hasn’t even finished processing the fact that he’s being interviewed in the middle of an earthquake, and then he gets hit with the revelation that the reporter clearly prioritized interviewing him over possibly evacuating, and like 🤣
Tumblr media
Then he goes, “Okay! Let’s talk quick!”
So anyway, the interview proceeds, we get like, TWO - just two - regular questions and the accompanying standard responses:
Have you done any research on DID and Egyptian culture?
Really, it was for, um. The Egyptian culture part of it, there was a lot that was interesting, but we had the… the best thing we could have was Mohamed Diab, who is from Cairo, directing the show, and um, he just. You know, the whole thing was to bring as much authenticity, uh, especially when it came to representation of Egyptian culture in the show, both modern and ancient, in the show. And as far as my research into DID, I talked to a lot of mental health professionals, and there was this one book, “A Fractured Mind” by Robert Oxnam, which was like my bible, where he describes his journey through dissociative identity disorder, and that was really helpful in orienting the whole show.
[I don’t know if you’ve heard this before, but] a film critic once said that you are the most successful Marvel actor since Robert Downey Jr..
I did, I mean, that’s an amazing thing to hear, and, you know, he’s one of my idols, and that’s definitely… we wanted it to feel the way that it felt, like that first Iron Man movie, y’know, something totally fresh, and a character that comes in and has a unique tone to it, so that’s, that was… I hope that more people feel that way.
And the interviewer chimes in again, asking the following question: “I don’t know if… did you know that people call you ‘Internet Boyfriend’?”
Oscar humbly responds, “I’m aware that I have been… yes, I have been called that.”
The interviewer reveals another Dune-related curiosity: “And the next one is, ‘your little son Timothée’.”
Isaac notes that he’s heard that one before too: “‘My little son Timothée’, yeah, yeah.”
The interviewer continues: “Actually now, in Taiwan and China, I mean, the Chinese [speaking] world, they called you “daddy”, especially after Dune, because I think they love your beard…?
Tumblr media
… In Dune, so they call you “daddy”. Did you know that those kind of nickname they call you, the fans call you, and do you like it?”
And Óscar Isaac Hernández Estrada, bless his heart, gave us what could possibly be the best answer he’s ever given anyone, and it’s the one we all know very well. He went full f—kin’ FLOWER from Bambi and said:
Tumblr media
Before the interview concludes, Oscar is asked one final question:
Who is your favorite superhero?
Well, from the movies, I’d say Iron Man for sure. I just love that performance and his, y’know, Robert Downey’s character Tony Stark is just so fantastic.
The interviewer, true to professional form, says, “Thank you so much!”
And with reference to her earlier comments about the earthquake, Oscar Isaac goes, “You’re welcome! Stay safe!”
