it's my opinion that "all hobbits are kind/brave/generous" is part of this infantilization I was talking about. even when characters in the story do it, with good intentions, it's very silly! no, hobbits are not inherently pure hearted like children, some are greedy, selfish, cruel, and this can be true of any thinking being!
bilbo goes back to his house being auctioned, family members rejecting his identity and then calling him mad for decades. frodo lost his parents and his fellow hobbits started making up stories of them killing each other. and then... SMEAGOL, c'mon man that's all the proof you need

Rough sketch of a battle between an elves and orcs. Totally inspired by the events of the first age when Morgoth took over Beleriand.

when you’re watching the lord of the rings, you don’t really get the full picture of just how insane it is that sam was able to defeat shelob in battle—in the book, tolkien spends literal paragraphs describing how ancient and powerful shelob is, how her skin is so tough that no warrior (NO warrior, like ever !) has been able to pierce it.
like sure sam had the phial of galadriel, but this guy is 3 and a half feet tall with absolutely zero training and he sent shelob crawling back into her little cave with nothing but pure rage. like OMG??? literal chihuahua of hobbits istg

Lots of people talk about hair braiding in their LOTR fics, especially among the elves and the Rohirrim. But I don’t think we talk about it enough among the horses. If Rohan is a place that puts so much effort and care into their horses and they frequently braid their own hair, then they’re definitely braiding some manes and tails, too, right? And if the elves are putting decorative bells on their horses, how are they not taking this other obvious chance to ramp up their aesthetic game as well? I think they must be, and we just aren’t hearing about it explicitly very often. We ALL braided horse hair at the stable when I was young, and I refuse to believe it’s just a preteen girl thing. More LOTR horse braids!
