Niall Horan announces ‘Heaven’
Tumblr media
“Heaven” is Horan’s first new solo release in nearly three years
Niall Horan is set to release “Heaven,” his first new solo single in nearly three years on February 17th via Capitol Records. The chart-topping artist wrote the track with John Ryan and Joel Little, who also produced, and Tobias Jesso Jr. Horan recorded the song in Southern California. Seven-inch vinyl and CD editions of “Heaven” will be released in April.
“One thing I’ve learned over the years is that society loves to pressure us into reaching certain milestones by a certain age,” Horan shares. “Whether that’s getting married or anything else that really should be based on our own instincts. As I’ve gotten older I’ve tried to let go of those expectations and just follow my heart. The chorus of this song is saying that what I have in my life currently is amazing. So it would be crazy to ruin that by giving into outside pressures.”
Horan teased “Heaven” on TikTok, where his posts have amassed over 100 million views since October 2022. In the week leading up to the single’s official announcement, excitement grew as fans around the globe began receiving boxes containing a candle, lyrics from the chorus of “Heaven” and a QR code that led to heavenwontbethesame.com.
On May 26th, Horan will make his festival debut at Boston Calling. He’ll be performing at numerous festivals around the world, including Pinkpop and Isle of Wight. Horan joins The Voice as a new coach for Season 23, which premieres on March 6th on NBC.
Originally from Mullingar, Ireland, Horan has sold over 80 million records and toured the globe multiple times as part of the iconic One Direction. His full-length solo debut Flicker entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 in October 2017 and contained the 3x RIAA Platinum single “Slow Hands” and the 2x RIAA Platinum “This Town.” The album hit the top 10 in 20 countries total. With combined global streams surpassing eight billion, Flicker has gone Platinum in five countries, including the US, and Gold in additional seven countries. Heartbreak Weather followed in 2020 and topped the UK’s Official Albums chart and Billboard’s Top Album Sales tally.

Hey luv, I was wondering if you took requests and if you do I'd kindly like to request something. I was wondering if you'd be willing to do a K/DA Akali x female reader where they were childhood friends but lost contact over the years and when they reunited at a party, they did some catching up and Akali discovered that the reader is a songwriter and in a way maybe a singer but just doesn't have the courage the put the songs out into the public yet. Throughout catching up they grew feelings for each other and didn't want to admit it to themselves or each other but the other members of K/DA were noticing it and well they planned a little something to help them confess and then they got together.
If you can't do it that's ok. 😊
Have a good rest of your day/night luv💕🫂

Tap-tap, tap-tap, tap-tap, went each end of the pen as it connects to the solid wood of the studio desk. On said desk, a half written song with only a base guitar melody and a few lines of a verse lie forgotten, and it’s writer sat on the studio couch, gazing into the snow-ridden park below the agency building. It’s winter, and if not for the imagery outside, one could distinguish the season by the volume and vibrations from the boiler room’s furnace that rung throughout the walls. Despite the warmth that flooded the building, the wild haired girl still had on a fleece hoodie and jogging pants set, with thick socks to keep her feet warm, and the hoodie sleeves long enough to cover her freezing fingers.
Akali had been in K/DA’s shared studio since the early hours of the morning, and had barely gotten her song done. The song was important, as it would be her solo for the upcoming album, and with only two days left to submit the final rendition, the pressure was high. She’s already gotten worried looks from Ahri and Kai’Sa, and most recently, a scolding from Evelyn about ‘this is not who we are’. Management, though they’ve always had faith in the firecracker, were also showing signs of doubt, as they’ve never encountered Akali in this state of mind before. And if she knew how to combat this form of seasonal depression, Akali would have told her bandmates and the company to not worry.
Everyone was a bit on edge.
Akali is entranced by the snowflakes that fall from the sky. They remind her of her youth, when she would play in the neighborhood playground after martial arts lessons, unphased by the cold, as winter was her favorite season. Her gaze was fixated on the playground in the park below, and from her imagination, the young rapper reminisced on the simpler times, when her childhood was pure, and her love was innocent.
“‘Kali, stop it, you’re gonna hurt yourself!” a young voice echoed from Akali’s brain as her mind made a turn down memory lane. A young Akali, no older than six or seven, stood high and mighty on top of the jungle gym, ready to show off her newest trick to her best friend, who stood worried on the snow covered ground. She should be used to Akali’s recklessness by now, but Akali never ceases to amaze the other young girl.
“If I make this flip, you have to promise me something, [Y/N]!” Said Akali, ignoring the worry her friend displayed beforehand.
“What is it?” replies [Y/N], curiously.
“You have to promise to marry me!” Akali replies in a confident tone, preparing herself for the flip of her life, while [Y/N] deadpans into her hand. “Just don’t hurt yourself, stupid!”
Of course, Akali lands her flip expertly - and [Y/N} lets out the breath she didn’t know she was holding - and as she stands up straight, the wild haired girl holds out her hand, pinky-finger pointed out and ready to seal the promise.
“Pinky promise you’ll marry me, [Y/N]?”
“Girls don’t marry each other, ‘Kali, they marry boys.” [Y/N] says matter of factly, causing Akali’s lips to form a point at her best friend. “Says who?”
[Y/N] paused, thinking for a moment. “My mom and dad. Don’t yours?”
A bored ‘booooooo’ left Akali’s lips, chapped by the cold. “Okay, fine - if we don’t get boyfriends when we’re older, then we’ll marry each other. How does that sound?”
[Y/N] paused once again, taking a longer moment to think about her answer. After a minute or two, she shrugged, and interlocked her gloved pinky with Akali’s bare one. “Okay! I’ll marry you then!”
A knock on the studio door brought Akali’s trip through memory lane to a pause. With haste, she got up from her seat on the couch and opened the door. Standing in the doorway was her bandmate, Kai’Sa, and the sight of the main dancer made Akali’s eyebrows raise in question.
“You’ve been in here for a while, yknow,” Kai’Sa began, “anything yet?”
Akali shook her head in defeat. “I haven’t had writer's block in a minute. This shit is killing me.” She said, rubbing her eyes that burned with exhaustion.
“Well, I have an idea….”
Normally, Kai’Sa’s ideas are very good and beneficial, but it was something about the way that the dancer said that sentence that sparked a sense of mischief in her gut. “And what is this idea?”
“Let’s say that a new club opened up in Hongdae,” Kai’Sa started, and though Akali knew where this was going, she found herself leaning against the doorframe to entertain her bandmate’s ‘hypothetical’ question, “aaaannnd let’s say that I got us some free access tickets into the VIP show tonight, that’s displaying a new singer-songwriter-producer with a new single performance….would you be interested?”
It’s always an adventure when Kai’Sa finds things to do in the cities that K/DA visits. She’ll ask so innocently, dragging the other girls into her random, exciting rendezvous, which always tend to spark new inspiration for music, dance and entertainment for the group. Kai’Sa didn’t have a mischievous bone in her body, but in certain situations, her adventures would end in an intense night of clubbing, drinks, and not-so-appropriate dancing.
“You’re trying to get me inspiration to write?”
“Maybe. But you’ve also had yourself holed up in here for a week, and I think you could let loose a little. We can’t have our hidden gem down in the dumps-”
“-so close to a comeback?”
“-in general, ‘Kali.”
Akali took in Kai’Sa’s words. Normally, that’s how her writer’s blocks would be cured - a quick trip to an underground event would have the rapper in good spirits in no time at all. However, a club is different than an underground event - theres more people that know people, with less etiquette and more entitlement - which is why Akali normally strayed away from those kinds of scenes.
However, it was two days before her shit was due, and she was becoming desperate to get something on the page.
“I can be ready in an hour.”
Tumblr media
The heavy base blasting through the walls of the club has Akali rethinking her decision of taking on Kai’Sa’s offer. There were many more bodies than she anticipated, many more flashing lights and floating drinks. She thinks she’s underdressed - her simple pair of ripped jeans, combat boots, white tee and black cap making her stand out like a sore thumb. Paired with the various rings on her fingers, wrist watch and silver chains and her signature dogtags, the rapper felt as though she was going to meet up with a friend, not enjoy herself at a club. A hand went to adjust her cap a little over her eyes to avoid unwanted eye contact with anyone who wasn’t Kai’Sa.
“Relax, girl,” said the main dancer, as Kai’Sa placed a hand on Akali’s back, “I can feel the tension radiating off of you.”
“It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a setting like this,” Akali responds, “It’s…a lot more people than I thought.”
“Don’t worry, just follow my lead.”
“Follow your lead where, exactly?”
“To the DJ Booth.”
Of course, it was like Kai’Sa to get in good with the DJ’s so that she could request a hefty amount of songs without an additional charge. She was skillful like that - and almost never dropped her band’s name for the benefit of her own.
Through the mass of bodies already tipsy from colourful shots and club music, Akali and Kai’Sa made their way to the back of the club, where the DJ booth was located, as well as the VIP section. All Kai’Sa had to do was flash her phone at the overly-buff bouncer for the two to be let in. Akali didn’t question it - she was too busy trying to get a feel for the club. She barely noticed when her hand was let go of, as Kai’Sa went to hug the DJ who had invited her to this event.
“‘Kali, this is the guy I was telling you about,” said the main dancer over the blasting music, to which Akali shook his hand out of respect. Small talk was made, until the DJ leaned into Kai’Sa’s ear, pointing in another direction while saying something. At that point, Akali had been babysitting a small fruity drink, having grown a bit comfortable into this new setting.
The dancer had leaned over to Akali next to relay the message: “This is the new rising artist I was telling you about earlier! They’re about to perform!”
Akali shifted her gaze from her bandmate to the stage, and suddenly, the music that was so deafening became a muffled memory, as the rapper took in the presence that was on the blue and purple accented stage. A face she had not seen in years, now appeared before her with a new sense of maturity and age.
It was [Y/N] up there, and what’s more, she was singing.
The next four minutes or so was a blur to Akali, and she was only able to refocus when Kai’Sa had given her a gentle shake on the shoulder, warning her about the new arrival to the VIP section. The arrival being [Y/N], who’s first move was to hug the DJ, who she could only assume had some relation to her. She shook Kai’Sa’s hand, and when it was Akali’s turn to be greeted, the rapper was still dumbstruck by the beauty in front of her.
Akali and [Y/N] made eye contact, and for a moment, it seemed like the world paused. The club and it’s loud, pulsating music became muffled, and the only thing Akali was focused on was the woman before her. It felt like a dream, really, the way everything died down around her and how her focus zoomed in onto the singer who was approaching her for a hug-
Shit, [Y/N] was coming in for a hug. She was coming in for a hug and Akali was standing still like an idiot. It wasn’t until the rapper felt the warmth from the other spread throughout her body that she was able to react.
“Holy shit, it’s been ages!” (Y/N) says into Akali’s ear, thankful of the close proximity so that she didn’t have to yell. “You’re a big shot now! How’ve you been?”
The rest of the night consisted of the two catching up on their lives prior to this (with subtle pop-ins from Kai’Sa, who’d taken to entertaining herself on the dance floor with whoever was willing to dance with her). There exchange of phone numbers and socials, and when the club finally became unbearable for Akali (and Kai’Sa having downed one too many shots), the two separated with a promise to meet up again.
Akali lays on her bed, lost in the thought of you. Emotions that had been unknown to her for some time had begun to swirl up again - emotions she believed she had pushed down long ago when circumstances caused her and (Y/N) to separate in their youth; but she was back.
She was back, and she was gorgeous, and Akali was falling in love all over again.
The next thing she knows, Akali is up again at the crack of dawn, where the sun is just beginning to peak over the horizon, and with her sudden alertness come the adrenaline she had been missing for her songwriting. Off went the blankets that covered her thin frame as she frantically stumbled over to her desk, littered with various papers of songs past, music sheets, and other instruments of music creation. The rapper managed to get a pencil steady in her hands and a clean sheet of paper, and began to write feverishly. She wanted to get it down before the inspiration was lost again. She did not look up from the paper until she deemed the song done, and when she finally did, the sunrise had taken it’s place upon the horizon. Akali found comfort in the vibrant oranges, soft yellows, and lazy purples that painted the morning sky, the blanket of night being stripped away for a brand new day.
A new dawn, a new day. Akali felt at peace in this moment.
Akali nods her head at Ahri’s question, anxiety shaking her bones like the cold from the winter that blanketed the city.
Tumblr media
“-and you said you wrote this, this morning?”
This song was all or nothing.
“It’s different from you, ‘Kali,” said the blonde woman as she examined the piece of paper with various scribbles of words into stanzas, her chin resting in the palm of her hand, “but I think it’s beautiful. Did you have a composition?”
“Uh, well- yeah, but not recorded,” replies the rapper as she gestures over to the guitar that laid against the wall of the studio, “I can play the chorus?”
Ahri looks back to Yasuo, the bands producer, who simply shrugs, “I don’t see why not. We can worry about recording it later for submission.”
Akali, in an attempt to shake off her anxiety, grabs the guitar, positions it on her lap, and fiddles with the tuning keys to get the instrument in the right tune to play. There’s a moment of hesitance, in which she glances to Yasuo and Ahri, who patiently wait for Akali to play.
“Take you’re time,” Yasuo encourages, “you can’t rush art, after all.”
Akali nods, closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath to ground herself. The image of (Y/N) appears in her mind, and before the rapper knows it, she begins to play:
And if the whole world was watchin’
I’d still dance with you
Drive highways and byways
To be there with you
Over and over the only truth
Everything comes back to you
You still make me nervous
When you walk in the room
Them butterflies, the come alive
When i'm next to you
Over and over the only truth
Everything comes back to you
Akali could hear the pumping from her heart furiously in her ears. She slowly peels her eyes open to see her bandmate and producer giving applause to her demonstration of the on-the-fly composition she just did.
“That was marvelous, ‘Kali!” announces Ahri, “That has to be at the top of the track list- Yasuo, it just has to be!”
She’s tugging at the older man’s green cardigan in excitement, which makes both Akali and Yasuo chuckle at her child-like behavior. “I agree, it’s definitely a good song,” He adds on, taking a sip from the coffee he had been nursing in his hand for a while, “‘Lover Girl’ Akali J. Tethi has a ring to it.”
“Please, stop, I’m not a lover girl,” the rapper whines, overwhelmed by the swell of compliments from the two as she lowers the bottom of the guitar onto the floor, taking to resting her chin on the top of the handle with her hands adding cushion to the wooden instrument, “and- I mean, I guess it’s good. I mean- I know it’s good, but…”
“We need the inspiration details!” Ahri asserts, dying to know what caused her bandmate to create such a beautiful piece. “Is it about something? About someone…?”
“Uuuhhmmm…” it was a futile attempt to stall, but the smile that painted Akali’s face gave her away completely. Ahri’s squeal and insistent tapping on the arm of her chair urged Akali to continue.
“Okay, so- there’s this girl…” The rapper began, her head tilting slightly to the side as she tried to find the best way to tell this story. “We’ve been friends since we were little…and I loved her. But we ended up separating- she moved away right before we were about to start middle school. But, last night- when Kai took me to that club, I saw her. I saw her, after so long. And I got to hug her- to hold her again, and- and everything came back to me. She’s one of the reasons why I started music; and when I hugged her, I just- I just fell in love all over again. Nothing had changed and- fuck, this is so embarrassing to say…”
There was a moment of silence. Ahri and Yasuo looked at each other, then back to the obviously love-struck rapper. “Akali, you’re in love.”
“Yeah, I got that part down - how do I deal with it?”
“You go after her?” Yasuo suggested, sarcastically albeit.
“I can’t just do that!” Akali retorted.
Yasuo shook his, mumbling something about how ‘young people are so dense, before speaking up again, “Look- the foundation is there. You have history. You just wrote a song about her. Besides anxiety, what’s really stopping you from finding this young woman and telling her you love her?”
“Uh, my pride if she rejects me,” Akali answers matter of factly, “and do you even have experience in order to give love advice?”
“That’s besides the point,” Ahri interrupts, holding out her hands to cease the two’s back and forth.
The blonde vocalist directs her gaze onto the young rapper, who she’s seen grow up so much in the past few years since their debut. There’s a moment of thought before she speaks. “Akali, lets think of it this way; do you want to be the girl who just writes the love songs, or the girl who acts on them?”
There’s a beat that passes. Then, Akali’s phone rings. She checks the caller ID, and it’s none other than (Y/N). She looks back at Ahri and Yasuo, who give her looks of approval.
“I think we can finish up the submission paperwork for you,” Ahri reasons, “you should probably take that.”
Akali rises from her seat, hurriedly propping the guitar against the wall, much more sloppily compared to its original position, and rushes out the door to answer her phone.

Niall Horan is not worried about turning 30. The singer-songwriter, who famously devoted a portion of his youth to One Direction, will be crossing that threshold later this year, and he wrestles with maturity in “Never Grow Up,” one of the best tracks on his upcoming album, The Show: “I hope we still dance like we’re falling in love/ Hope we still drink like we’re back in the pub/ Hope we grow old, but we never grow up.”
“I don’t care anymore,” he says of the impending milestone, chatting with Consequence over Zoom. “We speak about what happens from 16 to 20, and 20 to 24, but more actually happens between 25 and 30 than I thought. Your interests change, and things happen in your life — the kind of things you write about.”
According to Horan, it’s a “lovely day in London town” when we speak a few weeks prior to the release of The Show, out June 9th. He comes across as easygoing, humble, and grounded, but also seems very excited to talk about his music. The album’s two pre-release singles, “Heaven” and “Meltdown,” have provided listeners with their first window into The Show, an album that plays like a natural extension of his previous two full-length efforts.
It’s the hope of most artists that each project is their favorite to date, and the vocalist confirms that his personal anticipation for this release is high. “I feel like I’ve got my best work here,” he notes. “If you don’t back yourself, who’s going to back you?”
The Show‘s 10 tracks were developed with some of Horan’s trusted collaborators. He reveals that part of the project was written in Nashville, Tennessee — “What a town,” he says with a smile, shaking his head. He tries to make a visit to Music City at least once a year, he explains, and “Never Grow Up” was one of the songs that came from his time at Starstruck Studios, located on a block lined with songwriting houses, labels, and publishing companies.
“Never Grow Up” was co-written with Julian Bunetta, John Ryan, and Shane McAnally, the last of whom is one of Nashville’s true producing and songwriting gems. The sonic landscape of the song, and most others on The Show, is where Horan seems to be particularly comfortable, surrounded by acoustic guitar, truthful lyrics, and a reliable drum beat.
“If I’m sat still for even a minute, I’m always thinking of something to write. I write a lot of stories,” he says of his process. Narratives are always turning over in his head, both real and imagined. “I like to have an idea before I go anywhere near a studio or before I start to sit down and write something.”
While The Show slots neatly into Horan’s discography, this album feels different to him for a few reasons. For one, “There’s no heartbreak,” he confirms. That’s quite the contrast to his previous project, literally titled Heartbreak Weather, which dropped on March 13th, 2020 as the world screeched to a halt. Like many other artists, he felt inspired by the stillness that came with a global pause. “Stillness was something that actually was more thought provoking than I thought it would be,” he explains. “Reflection. My outlook, and feelings and emotions that I hadn’t really cracked into — they were a big, big part of what this album’s about.”
There hasn’t been an abundance of downtime for Horan recently, who also recently wrapped his role as a judge on Season 23 of NBC’s The Voice. Next, in support of The Show, Horan has mapped out an enormous 2024 world tour (find ticket details here), and the gears turning in his head while discussing the trek are practically visible. “My favorite thing about my career is being able to have an effect on people’s lives and create things for them to relate to,” he shares. “Hopefully we can just keep that going, and maybe gather some new people along the way.”
He describes himself as tied inherently to his artistry. When asked what goals he might have or what he might be looking forward to just as Niall the person rather than Niall the artist, he’s a bit stumped. “I just want to take it all in, because I feel like I’m so fired up. I haven’t toured and done shows in five years now, so I’m just more grateful than ever.”
For someone who has spent over a decade centered in the spotlight in a variety of ways, Horan seems to have his priorities quite clear when asked how he prefers to be seen by people. “I’ve been told if you’re a nice guy, that’s a good thing,” he jokes. “I love meeting new people and love chatting. To be told I’m a songwriter and a nice guy? I’d take both of them to the grave with me if I could.”

prompt list: niall horan lyrics
Below are fifty prompts drawn from Niall Horan’s discography. They can be used as dialogue, within narration, or just as inspiration for fics/moodboards/fanart.
Reblog to use as a call for prompts (one pairing/character with one or more numbers) or just to save for inspiration.
it feels different when you’re with me
everything comes back to you
get out while you can
don’t want to end the night
finding reasons to stay
do you still think of me?
too much to ask
tell me what you’re running from
tangled up and twisted
waiting for you all night
show up on your doorstep
barefoot and a bottle of wine
like it’s not goodbye
dancing without you
for the rest of my life
hard to tell the real from the dreams
heaven can’t hold a candle to
watch me disappear
skip all the small talk
can’t you tell that I want you?
when everybody’s watching
asking questions to the ceiling
I will steady your hand
nothing holding us
just want a safe place
the smell of your perfume
miles away from the day that we started
can’t promise picket fences
sleepwalk living
would you wait for me?
losing your mind in the mirror
on my knees in the darkness
those slow hands
house of broken hearts
crying in a crowded bar
we were on the run
tripping right into your heart
along came the devil
scream until you hear me
I’ll keep your secrets safe
all dressed up but with nowhere to go
I fall too fast
in this old town
all your gorgeous colors
I forget you’re not here
slip out in the night
still make me nervous
better left unsaid
the one I want to wake up to
give me back what you took apart

WAIT IT JUST HIT ME NOW HOW MORE LYRICS FROM NO JUDGEMENT FIT-
Cause we both got nothing to hide, nothing to hide - This reminds me of ASP saying once that the way Rory and Jess’ relationship worked was that they always saw each other for what they were.

Always You
Pairing: Charlie Gillespie x Fem Reader
Summary: {We Play Pretend Series} Charlie decides to stop overthinking and finally proposes to his best friend at his very own way.
Songs Used: Black and White by Niall Horan and I’ll Follow You by Echosmith
Word Count: +2k
Tumblr media
Charlie finally finishes preparing the fire as Y/N comes out of the tent in his orange hoodie, one of his bandanas adorning her high ponytail. Her dazzling smile blanks him for a few seconds, and the day he asked her to be his girlfriend for the first time appeared on the back of his head.
He was maybe even more nervous than he is right now, and he blurted out the question without realizing it. It wasn't until Y/N jumped into his arms and pressed her lips against his that he finally understood what was happening. That day was the happiest day of his life, but then it was overcome by the day their paths crossed again, then by the day they became a couple again, then by the day they moved in together, and if everything goes well, now it will be overcome by this one. He smiles fondly at the memories. One thing is for sure, with Y/N everything always gets better.
She sits next to him, reaching out to sink her face into her boyfriend's neck. When he suggested for them to take a little camping trip before they returned to Canada for the holidays, she said yes without hesitation. First of all, because she loves to experience moments like this with him. Memories of all the times they camped in the Gillespie's backyard when they were children lighting up her heart. And secondly, because she knows that he needs the peace and calm that being here gives him, after all, she has no doubt that Charlie has planned to propose to her during the trip back home.
“Did you enjoy the day? I know you wanted to rest before the trip, it means a lot to me that you agreed to come.” He confessed while wrapping his arm around her, lifting the hoodie slightly to caress the sensitive skin on her waist.
“Char, we spent hours blasting our favorite albums, we elegantly ate ridiculously delicious gas station hotdogs, you spilled the soda down your pants which was quite entertaining, and now I'm under the stars by your side on a beautiful night. If you ask me, this is the perfect day.” She declares without hesitation, raising her head a little to give him a soft kiss in his jawline.
Charlie blushes, happiness flooding his soul just as always with his precious girl. “I couldn’t agree more. Everyday I get to spend with you is a perfect one.” She smirks at his words, her raised eyebrow indicates she's ready to fight him.
"Oh yeah? Even the time I convinced you that Santa was obviously born in Canada and we searched for his house all over the city?" He snorts thinking about two really small ten year olds doing mischief around the town.
"You had very convincing arguments. Shame our parents didn’t think the same and punished us for a month."
“It’s not really punishment if we get to spend it together anyways.” Y/N added, remembering all the hours of fun they managed to have in the Gillespie’s leaving room.
"They had no other choice, we were attached by the hips. I mean, we tried to elope and live in the park a year earlier just because we were sick of saying goodbye every night.” Charlie reminds her while breaking into laughter.
“Mom had to convince us to come back, telling us that one day we could get married and be together in a way nicer place than the park. And you didn’t believe her because what could be nicer than the park?” Y/N recalls, the image of their 9 year old selves swinging with their backpacks full of important prized possessions like Charlie's collection of rocks or Y/N’s toy microphone making them laugh.
“She had to explain to me everything about that marriage thing she was talking about on the way home.” Charlie says with a smile.
“And then you propose a few days later in your backyard, with a red ring pop and a beautiful original song you played on your guitar.” She hugs him tightly, giving him a sweet kiss on the cheek.
“I was nine, I'm sure it wasn’t beautiful. It probably didn't even make sense. But, I wrote it with a lot of love, just for you to eat the ring five minutes later.” He calls her out, sticking out his tongue in a playful way.
“And I’ll do it again.” He pretends to be offended but Y/N just needs to kiss him and whisper that she loves him against his lips for him to smile again. “We were quite intense children, huh?”
His eyes light up, and he winks cheekily. “We still are.”
Charlie gently kisses her hair and gets up to take his guitar, meanwhile she sits a little further away from him to give him enough room to play, and he tries to control the shaking of his hand while playing a soft sound he has been working on.
Once he finally calmed down a little, he starts to play the song he drove so far away to play, deciding it’s time. “That first night we were standing at your door, fumbling for your keys, then I kissed you. Ask me if I want to come inside, 'cause we didn't want to end the night. Then you took my hand, and I followed you.” Y/N had never heard that song before, which immediately surprises her because they live together, how come she never heard it? She puts attention to the lyrics and realizes he is talking about the night they became a couple again, after the Stand Tall presentation.
“Yeah, I see us in black and white, crystal clear on a star lit night, In all your gorgeous colors, I promise that I'll love you for the rest of my life. See you standing in your dress, swear in front of all our friends there'll never be another. I promise that I'll love you for the rest of my life.” Then everything clicks. How nervous he has been all day, his "sudden" desire to camp before the holidays, the eyes full of emotion with which he has looked at her all night. And suddenly this day is even more perfect than she ever believed it could be.
“Now, we're sitting here in your living room, telling stories while we share a drink or two. And there's a vision I've been holding in my mind, we're 65 and you ask when did I first know?" Tears begin to fall down her cheeks, the purest smile she has ever had stuck on her face. “I always knew.” They whisper at the same time in a broken voice, Charlie trying very hard not to cry at their matched answer so he can finish the song.
“I want the world to witness, when we finally say I do. It's the way you love, I gotta give it back to you. I see us in black and white, crystal clear on a star lit night, In all your gorgeous colors. I promise that I'll love you for the rest of my life.”
He finishes the song, puts down the guitar while taking a deep breath and kneels carefully in front of her. “It has always been you. It was you when we were 8 years old and only you could borrow my best crayons, It was you when we were 16 and I learned to drive because you had no one to take you to your auditions, and It was you when we were 22 and I asked you to move in with me because I couldn’t stand be apart from you again. You are the only one with whom I feel as ecstatic as when I jump into the sea, and all you have to do is look at me to achieve it. You are light, Y/N. This beautiful bright star that for some reason, always chooses me. I love you so much, beautiful. You are the love of my life, It will always be you.”
She can't stop the tears falling down her face, her hand lovingly caressing the cheek of the man in front of her. "Y/N Y/L, will you marry me?" She doesn’t give him time to react and joins their lips hard, trying desperately to make him feel everything she is feeling in those moments. He responds fervently, taking her with one hand firmly by the thigh while with the other caresses her neck, confidently putting his hand inside the hoodie.
She bites his pouty lower lip to smoothly slide her tongue, and he strokes her breasts gently before removing his hand from the collar of her clothing. When they finally separate to breathe, Y/N's eyes move to what Charlie is holding in front of her, a precious ring dangling from a golden chain that she has apparently been wearing as a necklace for who knows how many hours.
“Yes, yes, yes. I would always choose you Char.” Y/N gets up and helps Charlie to his feet, only to pull him close and bring his body against hers, her hands entwining in his hair while his arms wrap around her hips. His face shining with happiness. “The necklace was a smart move. Since when have I been wearing it?” She asks while staring deeply at his dazzling green eyes.
“You are unable to keep a ring on your finger for more than three days, there was no other option. I put it on after you fell asleep on the road.”
"This is the first time you managed to fool me. I totally thought you were going to propose in Canada."
“I know it wasn't glamorous but-”
“Shh, it was perfect. The song is beautiful, the ring looks just as I always dreamed of and you are all I want and more. I have never been happier. Heck, you could have asked me this morning while we were in our pajamas watching cartoons and I would have cried with joy anyway. Char, you're everything I need.” He kisses her deeply, releasing all the emotions that had had him stressed throughout the day, enjoying the company of his future wife and the way that only she knows how to melt him.
He lets go briefly to search something in his phone, and the melody he just played starts to fill the comfortable silence.
“It’s my favorite song already.” She whispers against his lips, a small smile in the corner of her mouth.
“It’s all yours, just like me.” Both laugh at how cheesy it sounded, dancing in each other's arms under the stars. Silently thanking God for having found their soulmate in this life.
Although he swears he has enough energy to dance the night away, after an hour Y/N notices just how tired Charlie actually is, and drags him to the tent to get some rest.
“Baby, I’m okay. I want to celebrate all night with you.” He whispers in her ear, catching her by the waist the moment she leans his head against the pillow to prevent her from getting up.
“Easy there, tiger. You can't even keep your eyes open. You drove nonstop for hours without complaining once just because you know I don't like driving. You did the hardest work with the tent and the fire, plus all the time we spent hiking. You need to rest.” His grasp on her loosens and she moves quickly to his side. He turns over his shoulder and leans on her chest, wrapping his arm around her waist.
She smiles at the sight and starts to softly play with his curls while singing him to sleep. “I fell in love at first sight, green eyes that fix it all. Your heart, it feels it all.” All the times she seeked the comfort in his beautiful eyes during the years replaying in her head. The way they shined with love and confusion that first day at the jatp bootcamp replaying in her mind.
“And I, I can't believe that you're mine.” She lets go of his hair to admire the ring around her neck with more attention, but his hand instantly reaches for hers and puts it back on his hair, making her chuckle. “You take away every breath. I can't believe I'm still speechless.” She whispers, planting small kisses on his hair, inhaling the scent of his shampoo as she wraps him in her arms.
“Charles Gillespie, It will always be you.”

Our Song (Pt 2 of Lights)
A/N: Inspired by "Our Song" by Anne-Marie and Niall Horan.
WEEEEEEEE. Angst my children. Angst.
-----------
You're chucking your belongings into your pickup truck. Your clothes, remainders of your savings, everything. You hear the telltale screech of tires before the car stops, footsteps running towards you.
"Y/N! What are you doing!?" A voice sobs, arms wrapping around you. You turn in Wanda's grip to look at her, your face stone cold. "You can't go. You can't. Please." She shakes you violently, only to receive no reaction.
"Wanda." You gently pry her off you as she stares at you through teary eyes. "I can't. You deserve someone who can take care of you, someone that can afford a proper home, a family. Someone that doesn't force you to sleep on an air mattress, someone that can afford to buy a fucking ring." You pull at your hair, distress crashing down upon you in waves. Wanda's lower lip trembles and you're by her side in an instant, arms pulling her closer. She clings to you, unwilling to let you leave. "I'm sorry Wanda but I have to go. Live a good life for me, please. Find someone that can worship you in all the ways I want to. Goodbye." You whisper before pressing a final kiss to her forehead and slipping out of her grip. A sob escapes as you slam the door of your pickup truck. Wanda's fists pound against your window but you ignore her, your heart cracking with every punch she throws. Starting the engine, you drive away, leaving a heartbroken Wanda behind in the little town you used to call home.
-----------
You crank up the radio, letting the pieces of your broken heart drown in the music.
"Just when I think you're gone,"
"Hear our song on the radio."
"Just like that,"
"Takes me back to the places we used to go."
Your heart tightens as you sing along to the lyrics, memories flooding back in.
-----------
It's prom night yet here you are, hanging around outside in the parking lot. A sniffle, barely audible catches your attention as you pluck the cigarette from your mouth, clouds of smoke escaping from your mouth. Sitting next to the trash can is a girl, a beautiful one at that, wearing a tight black dress that makes your jaw drop. Auburn hair cascading down her shoulders in soft waves, emerald eyes meet yours as she frantically wipes her tears away. Slowly you sit down next to her, so as not to scare her away. You take off your jacket, placing it on her shoulders. She doesn't react, only inching a little closer to you, leaning into your side. You smile, brushing a stray strand of hair out of her face before grabbing her hand and leading her to your pickup truck. You silently gesture for her to hop in and she wrinkles her nose.
"I was told to never get in a car with a stranger." You smile, putting your weight on one foot.
"I mean, you did accept my jacket and basically hugged me so... I think rules can be bent here." She sighs before dramatically pulling herself into your car and you smile, chucking your cigarette into the asphalt before hopping into the driver's seat. The two of you drive in a comfortable silence until you reach your destination. "Come on." You say, gently tugging on her hand, dragging her towards the docks. She watches as you pull your phone out, turning the volume up before placing it back in your pocket. Music floods through the speakers as you hold your hand out. She takes it and you pull her close, twirling her around.
"Just when I think you're gone,"
"Hear our song on the radio."
"Just like that,"
"Takes me back to the places we used to go."
"And I've been trying,"
"But I just can't fight it."
You dance in sync, her arms around your neck and yours around her waist.
"So do you normally whiff girls off in your truck and bring them dancing?" She whispers.
"No, you're an exception." She smiles, pulling back to face you.
"I'm Wanda."
"I'm Y/N." You smile before leaning in and kissing her.
-------------
"Y/N? Are you there? I'm pretty sure your break ended 5 minutes ago." Wanda calls out, searching the kitchen for you. She finds you outside, cigarette in hand. You quickly drop it, stomping on it with your shoe. She stares at you unbelieving. "You said you'd quit!" You lower your eyes to your feet, shuffling them. "It's bad for you! You just can't seem to stop." You freeze, smiling. This opportunity is too good to pass up.
"You're right. There's also other things I can't stop." You purr, pushing her against the brick of the restaurant, kissing her. She melts as you pull away, looking like a fish out of water.
"You don't play fair." She swats your arm and you grin as she pulls you back inside.
-------------
You slam your fist on the dashboard, grabbing the wheel and turning the vehicle around. Your foot slams on the accelerator, zooming back to the love of your life.
-------------
You find her at the docks, her legs dangling above the water. You debate sitting next to her but an even better idea flashes into your mind. Slowly, you creep up behind her, placing your hands on her shoulders before shoving her feet-first into the water. She screams, sputtering as she comes up, frantically waving her arms and legs around.
"I can't swim! Help! Anybody!" The blood drains from your face as you strip off your shoes, socks and jacket, diving into the frigid water. You scoop her up as she clings to your body. You trudge out of the water, the cool water seeping into your clothes. The moment you're out of the water, you collapse, shivering. Wanda lies next to you for a moment before hitting you. "You. Fucking. Asshole!" She screams as you pull her into a tight hug, refusing to let go as she punches you. Eventually, her strength gives out and she lets you hold her, sitting on your lap. "Why'd you come back?" You stay quiet for a moment before responding.
"I love you. I don't really need another reason." You murmur quietly, running your hands through her wet hair. She smiles wrapping her arms tighter around your soaking body.
"So when's the wedding?"
-------------
Okay jeez y'all so intimidating that I wrote a second part. It's short but I think it's okay. WEEEEEE!

what a time | t. holland
hello besties, this is a tom fic that has been in the making for a while! a personal favourite trope, tom and musician!reader break up and she writes a song about him! what a time by julia michaels ft. niall horan is used as the reader’s song, definitely go listen to it if you haven’t!
warnings: it’s mostly sad so grab some tissues, fluff at the end
Tumblr media
you, like tom, didn’t have a very typical job. while your friends went off to university to get their degrees, you went on to become a musician. that’s how you had met tom. he dmed you one day saying that he loved your music, you said you loved his movies, and the rest was history. he ended up introducing you to so many people over the ten months that you two were together, one of them being niall horan. niall and you exchanged numbers wanting to eventually collab, but neither of you thought that your breakup would be the reason that the two of you were going to release a song together.
after ten months, you and tom called it quits. you made sure the media thought it was mutual. that was the first thing you agreed on when the two of you started dating - if you ever went public and had broken up, it would seem to be a mutual agreement. neither of you wanted the other’s reputation to be ruined. little did the public know, the breakup was anything but mutual. he had broken up with you. you never knew why. he had just said, “it wasn’t working out.” that was all he left you with. that was all you had for closure. funny how forever seemed to last just over ten months, right?
you sat in your living room with a guitar in your hands. you had so much emotion that you had bottled up, and the only way you knew to get it out was songwriting. after messing around with different chords on your guitar, you found a chord progression that you were really confident in. the melody seemed to come naturally, and so your phone began to fill up with voice memos of possible lyrics.
i think of that night in the park, it was getting dark
and we stayed up for hours
what a time, what a time, what a time
you clinged to my body like you wanted it forever
what a time, what a time, what a time
for you and I
what a time, what a time
for you and I
the chorus came naturally, the verses came next, and before you knew it you had a rough draft of a song. after listening back to the song, you realized that it was missing something. you looked around the living room, sunlight peeking through the sheer, white blinds. after writing for two hours, you decided you needed a snack and a coffee.
you walked to the coffee shop down the street from your apartment. the coffee shop that you used to go to with tom. as you stood in line to order, your mind couldn’t help but wonder if he came to the shop when he was in town? did he stand in line and think about whether you still went here too? you ordered your iced coffee and pain au chocolat and sat at one of the tables. you chose a table far, far away from where you and tom used to sit. this place would always remind you of him no matter how hard you tried. the warm lights brightened up the room, but it still felt dim without tom. the coffee shop didn’t have that sense of warmth and familiarity that it used to, that tom brought to it whenever you used to go.
you watched as people walked in and out of the shop. you watched as couples kissed in line as they waited. you watched as people seemed happy. you needed to figure out what was missing with your song, and as you watched two people out on the street argue, you realized you needed a second voice on the track.
later that night, you asked niall to feature on your song. when you sent him a very rough recording of what you had written, he immediately agreed. the song was raw and real, the song revealed more about your breakup with tom than you could ever say.
•••
it had been two weeks since you released the song. what a time became popular enough to get you and niall a spot on james cordon’s show. as you were sat on stage and the band started playing the intro, you felt tears well up in your eyes. you couldn’t do it. you walked off stage where niall found you.
“come here,” was all he said. it was all he needed to say. he wrapped his arms around you and rubbed your back as your head sat on his chest. his heartbeat helped to calm you down. you and niall were just friends, but he was like a brother to you, especially after he helped you with the song. “let’s try again, yeah?” he asked you after a few minutes. the crew backstage just watched as he comforted you. you wiped the tears away from your face and nodded.
soon enough you were back on stage and performing the song. you fought back the tears throughout the whole performance, but whenever you felt the tears about to spill over, niall was there to get you through it. when he was close to you, he would hug you or hold your hand, and when he couldn’t he gave you a reassuring look. a look that said, “we’re going to get through this.”  your voice wavered as you sang, but the audience still cheered you on. the emotion that you felt pushed you to finish the performance, because as soon as it was done, the sooner you could get home and cry, cry somewhere that wasn’t in the eyes of the spotlight.
the episode you were on aired a few days later. you couldn’t bear to watch it, but you tweeted about it to help bring some publicity towards it. little did you know, on the other side of the world, tom was watching it as it aired. he was having dinner at his parent’s house when his dad had turned on the tv to watch the late late show. tom thought nothing of it and sat down on the couch next to the twins. he laughed at the segments, but then he saw you. nikki, knowing it was going to be too much for her firstborn, instinctively went to reach for the remote, but was stopped by tom saying a quiet, “no.”
he watched you as you sang. he watched as you poured your heart out to the world. tom watched you fight back tears that no one else could see, but most importantly, tom knew that he was the cause of this. he was the one who called it off, he was the one who ripped your heart in half, he was the one who caused all your tears, grief, and pain. he could never take that back. tom was too entranced by your performance to realize that he was shedding tears. he may not have been your boyfriend anymore, but he still knew you like the back of his hand. he missed you like a child misses his mother on the first day of school. he needed you the way the ocean needs the moon’s push and pull to create waves. it took you publicly fighting back your tears on stage for tom to realize completely that he had lost something more important to him than anything.
tom listened to you sing.
you clinged to my body like you wanted it forever, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie.
he wanted you for forever. all he ever wanted was for you to stay in his arms forever, but clearly he lost everything when he broke it off. at the time it all seemed reasonable. he loved you, but he didn’t want to lose your relationship to the distance, so he called it off. tom just never thought that it would hurt this much. being separated by vast oceans didn’t make it any better either. it made everything worse. he couldn’t just go and see you. he needed to fly out to la, find out where you were staying, and find a place for him to stay. and in the case that you did take him back, he needed to change his schedule to make sure he didn’t lose you again, because he couldn’t lose you, not again.
he wiped away the tears that rolled down his flushed cheeks with the cuff of his blue midtown high sweater. as you and niall hugged at the end of the performance he thought about how perfect life was when he held you in his arms. he thought about how he should be the one holding you in his arms. he thought about how he lost everything the day he lost you. it had been a month and a half since the breakup, and he felt like he had been suffering ever since. he needed you, that was the only thing he knew to be true.
“come here darling,” nikki said, opening up her arms to wrap around her son after getting up to comfort him. he held onto her like his life depended on it. she rubbed his back and placed a tender kiss on the top of his head.
“i miss her so much.” his voice was breathy, light and filled with air, yet heavy with emotion. “mum i can’t live without her, why did i ever leave her?” he sobbed into her chest. tom didn’t care if the rest of his family was watching him sob over a girl he broke up with, he only cared about you. “i really messed up.” he pulled away to look at his mother’s expression expecting disappointment, but only seeing a soft, warm smile.
“you’re allowed to mess up. you live and you learn. the important thing is what are you going to do about it?” nicola was always a wise woman in tom’s eyes. she always knew what to say and when to say it. not only that, but she was always a good friend to him, not just his mom. she looked into tom’s brown eyes that were only swirling with emotion. deep in thought, tom could only hear his mom’s words roaming around his mind. what are you going to do about it?
•••
less than 36 hours later tom found himself in la. he was on a journey to find you, and this time he wasn’t planning on giving up. he knew where to find you.
you stumbled into your favourite coffee shop as you always did. the coffee in la was different than back home, so whenever you were in la you couldn’t stop the small coffee obsession. you sat down at a table, opening your laptop to answer some emails and get some work done. you may have been sitting alone at a table, but you were comfortable with the space.
tom had walked in, ordered a coffee and a cookie, and after paying and receiving his order, his eyes scanned the room to find you, which he easily did. you looked ethereal, he thought you were so beautiful despite only wearing jeans and a plain t-shirt. you weren’t done up, but he still thought you were absolutely gorgeous. he mustered up the courage to ask if he could sit at your table, and once the two of you made eye contact it was as if the world stopped for a moment. his chest tightened at the sight of you, and the knot in his stomach had turned into butterflies. he was more nervous than he was at any press conference he had ever been to because if he didn’t do well, he would have lost everything for good.
“please sit,” you said after finding your voice. you shut your laptop, taking it off the table and putting it back into your bag to focus your attention on him. “what are you doing here? i thought you were still in kingston.” small talk was never your specialty. especially since you had so much you wanted to tell him with nowhere to start.
“i flew out about 36 hours ago. i needed to see you.” tom cut right to the chase. he may have been sleep deprived, being too nervous on the plane and during his layovers to even sleep, but he was thinking clearly when it came to fixing your relationship with him. he needed you back, that was the goal, that was why he flew out in the first place. “yeah, i couldn’t get a direct flight, so i had a layover in toronto. it was cool and all, but all i could think about was seeing you.” tom kept rambling, and as much as you wanted to stop him and get angry with him, you just let him talk. you needed to hear him out. you needed to know if the past month and a half had been hell for him like it was for you.
“i’m the biggest idiot that could have ever walked the planet, y/n. i shouldn't have broken up with you. i’m really sorry.” he reached out to grab your hands, cupping them in his. his touch was gentle, but so, so warm against your hands. his touch was intoxicating. you would be lying if you said that you didn’t want him, but even after he hurt you, tom was all you wanted. “i need to make things right. i need you back in my life, i need us to get back together. i want you, i’ve only wanted you.” i’ve only wanted you. his words were stitching your heart back together, but you couldn’t forget that he had left you.
“i was scared, so i broke up with you. that is the most idiotic thing i’ve ever done. i didn’t want the distance to hurt us so i needed to break up with you before the distance could break us up, but i’ll give you anything, no, i’ll give you everything if it means we can try again.” tom didn’t care about the people around your table, he just cared about you. he cared about getting you back. the two of you sat in silence, drowning out the noise of the other patrons in the shop. the bustle of the city was suddenly gone as you focused on him.
“do you mean it?” those words were the only thing you could muster out. your mind was all over the place. you looked behind him, at the people walking around the shop, grabbing their drinks and leaving, talking to their friends. your eyes focused back on tom. you focused on how he looked so desperate for you, how he was silently fighting for you as the two of you sat in silence.
“of course i do. i love you y/n.” those latter four words cut the silence like a knife. those four words were the last thing you thought you were going to hear from him, but here he was, saying everything you wanted him to and meaning it. he meant every single word he was saying to you, that much was evident.
“i love you too.”
•••
about a month later, you were scrolling on twitter only to see an article about you and tom getting back together. though the two of you never confirmed it explicitly, it was quite obvious with how much the two of you were spotted together. a few days after he flew out to reconcile with you, you had flown back home to london with him. countless dates were spent before tom had to go to ohio to film his newest project. you were meant to fly out later, needing to finish a few meetings in london about your next album.
you scrolled through your instagram to see a photo of you and tom that he had posted. it was a photo that harrison had taken of the two of you dancing around in the backyard as it was pouring rain. neither of you knew he had taken photos of you until after. the captured moment became both your lockscreen and tom’s lockscreen, and now it was out there for the whole world to see. he had tagged you in it and captioned it what a time for you and i, clearly referring to your song. a smile appeared on your face. you were quick to comment on his picture. when he says “you can stand under my umbrella” but he doesn’t have an umbrella :// if he was going to have fun with this, then so were you.
as your phone blew up, you got a text from tom saying he was taking a break from filming and that he would call you soon. what a time for you and him indeed.

oh my gosh, a playlist for pull me back to you would be perfection (just like you) - 🪐
Hi Saturn!
Took me a little while because I was having a dance party in the process!
You can find the playlist here but here’s the lyrics that made me choose these songs!
Someone To You - BANNERS
I don't even need to change the world I'll make the moon shine just for your view I'll make the starlight circle the room And if you feel like night is falling I wanna be the one you're calling 'Cause I believe that you could lead the way
Kiss Her You Fool - Kids That Fly
Stop waiting for a fairytale to Take you away, don't wait for someday She's thinking the same thing as you Don't be afraid, dreams aren't found they're made
Best Friend - Rex Orange County
And that's because I wanna be your favorite boy I wanna be the one that makes your day The one you think about as you lie awake I can't wait to be your number one I'll be your biggest fan and you'll be mine
Backyard Boy - Claire Rosinkranz
I can feel your eyes stare And I'm not gonna lie I get a little bit scared My heart is on wings I'm living in dreams
Friends - Ed Sheeran
We're not friends, we could be anything If we tried to keep those secrets safe No one will find out if it all went wrong They'll never know what we've been through So I could take the back road But your eyes'll lead me straight back home And if you know me like I know you You should love me, you should know
I Like Me Better - Lauv
I don't know what it is but I got that feeling Waking up in this bed next to you swear the room, yeah, it got no ceiling If we lay, let the day just pass us by I might get to too much talking, I might have to tell you something Damn I like me better when I'm with you
Us - James Bay
We used to be kids living just for kicks In cinema seats, learning how to kiss Running through streets that were painted gold We never believed we'd grow up like this So tell me how to be in this world Tell me how to breathe in and feel no hurt Tell me how 'cause I believe in something I believe in us
When You're Ready - Shawn Mendes
What if my dad is right when he says that you're the one No, I can't even argue, I won't even fight him on it Call you when it's late and I know that you're in bed 'Cause I'm three hours back, seems like you're always six ahead And I don't know why I try 'cause ain't nobody like you
Make You Mine - PUBLIC
Well, I will call you darlin' and everything will be okay 'Cause I know that I am yours and you are mine Doesn't matter anyway In the night, we'll take a walk, it's nothin' funny Just to talk Put your hand in mine You know that I want to be with you all the time
This Town - Niall Horan
And I want to tell you everything The words I never got to say the first time around And I remember everything From when we were the children playing in this fairground Wish I was there with you now If the whole world was watching I’d still dance with you Drive highways and byways to be there with you Over and over the only truth Everything comes back to you [...] And I know that it’s wrong That I can’t move on But there’s something about you
Photograph - Ed Sheeran
We keep this love in a photograph We made these memories for ourselves Where our eyes are never closing Hearts are never broken And time's forever frozen, still [...] You won't ever be alone, wait for me to come home
Tombé - M. Pokora (y/n and Pierre being both French, you couldn't escape this.. This one's a french song but I got you a translation!)
If ever you're scared Trust in me I will take your pain You will see, it will be fine If ever you doubt I make you a promise To keep on your way The words, the tenderness [...] I fell, fell, fell I was touched, bravo my queen you have won I was but a madman, a madman to lock up

A bathroom figures significantly in the origin stories of at least two classic One Direction songs. The first will be familiar to any fan: Songwriter and producer Savan Kotecha was sitting on the toilet in a London hotel room, when he heard his wife say, “I feel so ugly today.” The words that popped into his head would shape the chorus of One Direction’s unforgettable 2011 debut, “What Makes You Beautiful.”
The second takes place a few years later. Another hotel room in England — this one in Manchester — where songwriters and producers Julian Bunetta and John Ryan were throwing back Cucumber Collins cocktails and tinkering with a beat. Liam Payne was there, too. At one point, Liam got up to use the bathroom and when he re-emerged, he was singing a melody. They taped it immediately. Most of it was mumbled — a temporary placeholder — but there was one phrase: “Better than words…” A few hours later, on the bus to another city, another show — Bunetta and Ryan can’t remember where — Payne asked, maybe having a laugh, what if the rest of the song was just lyrics from other songs?
“Songs in general, you’re just sort of waiting for an idea to bonk you on the head,” Ryan says from a Los Angeles studio with Bunetta. “And if you’re sort of winking at it, laughing at it — we were probably joking, what if [the next line was] ‘More than a feeling’? Well, that would actually be tight!”
“Better Than Words,” closed One Direction’s third album, Midnight Memories. It was never a single, but became a fan-favorite live show staple. It’s a mid-tempo headbanger that captures the essence of what One Direction is, and always was: One of the great rock and roll bands of the 21st century.
July 23rd marks One Direction’s 10th anniversary, the day Simon Cowell told Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson that they would progress on The X Factor as a group. Between that date and their last live performance (so far, one can hope) on December 31st, 2015, they released five albums, toured the world four times — twice playing stadiums — and left a trove of Top 10 hits for a devoted global fan base that came to life at the moment social media was re-defining the contours of fandom.
It’d been a decade since the heyday of ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys, and the churn of generations demanded a new boy band. One Direction’s songs were great and their charisma and chemistry undeniable, but what made them stick was a sound unlike anything else in pop — rooted in guitar rock at a time when that couldn’t have been more passé.
Kotecha, who met 1D on The X Factor and shepherded them through their first few years, is a devoted student of boy band history. He first witnessed their power back in the Eighties when New Kids on the Block helped his older sister through her teens. The common thread linking all great boy bands, from New Kids to BSB, he says, is, “When they’d break, they’d come out of nowhere, sounding like nothing that’s on the radio.”
In 2010, Kotecha remembers, “everybody was doing this sort of Rihanna dance pop.” But that just wasn’t a sound One Direction could pull off (the Wanted only did it once); and famously, they didn’t even dance. Instead, the reference points for 1D went all the way back to the source of contemporary boy bands.
“Me and Simon would talk about how [One Direction] was Beatles-esque, Monkees-esque,” Kotecha continues. “They had such big personalities. I felt like a kid again when I was around them. And I felt like the only music you could really do that with is fun, pop-y guitar songs. It would come out of left field and become something owned by the fans.”
“The guitar riff had to be so simple that my friend’s 15-year-old daughter could play it and put a cover to YouTube,” says Carl Falk
To craft that sound on 1D’s first two albums, Up All Night and Take Me Home, Kotecha worked mostly with Swedish songwriters-producers Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub. They’d all studied at the Max Martin/Cheiron Studios school of pop craftsmanship, and Falk says they were confident they could crack the boy band code once more with songs that recalled BSB and ‘N Sync, but replaced the dated synths and pianos with guitars.

The greatest thing popular music can do is make someone else think, “I can do that,” and One Direction’s music was designed with that intent. “The guitar riff had to be so simple that my friend’s 15-year-old daughter could play it and put a cover to YouTube,” Falk says. “If you listen to ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ or ‘One Thing,’ they have two-finger guitar riffs that everyone who can play a bit of guitar can learn. That was all on purpose.”
One Direction famously finished third on The X Factor, but Cowell immediately signed them to his label, Syco Music. They’d gone through one round of artist development boot camp on the show, and another followed on an X Factor live tour in spring 2011. They’d developed an onstage confidence, but the studio presented a new challenge. “We had to create who should do what in One Direction,” Falk says. To solve the puzzle the band’s five voices presented, they chose the kitchen sink method and everyone tried everything.
“They were searching for themselves,” Falk adds. “It was like, Harry, let’s just record him; he’s not afraid of anything. Liam’s the perfect song starter, and then you put Zayn on top with this high falsetto. Louis found his voice when we did ‘Change Your Mind.’ It was a long trial for everyone to find their strengths and weaknesses, but that was also the fun part.” Falk also gave Niall some of his first real guitar lessons; there’s video of them performing “One Thing” together, still blessedly up on YouTube.
“What Makes You Beautiful” was released September 11th, 2011 in the U.K. and debuted at Number One on the singles chart there — though the video had dropped a month prior. While One Direction’s immediate success in the U.K. and other parts of Europe wasn’t guaranteed, the home field odds were favorable. European markets have historically been kinder to boy bands than the U.S.; ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys found huge success abroad before they conquered home. To that end, neither Kotecha nor Falk were sure 1D would break in the U.S. Falk even says of conceiving the band’s sound, “We didn’t want it to sound too American, because this was not meant — for us, at least — to work in America. This was gonna work in the U.K. and maybe outside the U.K.”
Stoking anticipation for “What Makes You Beautiful” by releasing the video on YouTube before the single dropped, preceded the strategy Columbia Records (the band’s U.S. label) adopted for Up All Night. Between its November 2011 arrival in the U.K. and its U.S. release in March 2012, Columbia eschewed traditional radio strategies and built hype on social media. One Direction had been extremely online since their X Factor days, engaging with fans and spending their downtime making silly videos to share. One goofy tune, made with Kotecha, called “Vas Happenin’ Boys?” was an early viral hit.
“They instinctively had this — and it might just be a generational thing — they just knew how to speak to their fans,” Kotecha says. “And they did that by being themselves. That was a unique thing about these boys: When the cameras turned on, they didn’t change who they were.”
Social media was flooded with One Direction contests and petitions to bring the band to fans’ towns. Radio stations were inundated with calls to play “What Makes You Beautiful” long before it was even available. When it did finally arrive, Kotecha (who was in Sweden at the time) remembers staying up all night to watch it climb the iTunes chart with each refresh.
Take Me Home, was recorded primarily in Stockholm and London during and after their first world tour. The success of Up All Night had attracted an array of top songwriting talent — Ed Sheeran even penned two hopeless romantic sad lad tunes, “Little Things” and “Over Again” — but Kotecha, Falk and Yacoub grabbed the reins, collaborating on six of the album’s 13 tracks. In charting their course, Kotecha returned to his boy band history: “My theory was, you give them a similar sound on album two, and album three is when you start moving on.”
Still, there was the inherent pressure of the second album to contend with. The label wanted a “What Makes You Beautiful, Part 2,” and evidence that the 1D phenomenon wasn’t slowing down appeared outside the window of the Stockholm studio: so many fans, the street had to be shut down. Kotecha even remembers seeing police officers with missing person photos, combing through the girls camped outside, looking for teens to return to their parents.
At this pivotal moment, One Direction made it clear that they wanted a greater say in their artistic future. Kotecha admits he was wary at first, but the band was determined. To help manage the workload, Kotecha had brought in two young songwriters, Kristoffer Fogelmark and Albin Nedler, who’d arrived with a handful of ideas, including a chorus for a booming power ballad called “Last First Kiss.”
“We thought, while we’re busy recording vocals, whoever’s not busy can go write songs with these two guys, and then we’ll help shape them as much as we can,” Kotecha says. “And to our pleasant surprise, the songs were pretty damn good.”
At this pivotal moment, too, songwriters Julian Bunetta and John Ryan also met the band. Friends from the Berklee College of Music, Bunetta and Ryan had moved out to L.A. and cut a few tracks, but still had no hits to their name. They entered the Syco orbit after scoring work on the U.S. version of The X Factor, and were asked if they wanted to try writing a song for Take Me Home. “I was like, yeah definitely,” Bunetta says. “They sold five million albums? Hell yeah, I want to make some money.”
Working with Jamie Scott, who’d written two songs on Up All Night (“More Than This” and “Stole My Heart”), Bunetta and Ryan wrote “C’mon, C’mon” — a blinding hit of young love that rips down a dance pop speedway through a comically oversized wall of Marshall stacks. It earned them a trip to London. Bunetta admits to thinking the whole 1D thing was “a quick little fad” ahead of their first meeting with the band, but their charms were overwhelming. Everyone hit it off immediately.
“Niall showed me his ass,” Bunetta remembers of the day they recorded, “They Don’t Know About Us,” one of five songs they produced for Take Me Home (two are on the deluxe edition). “The first vocal take, he went in to sing, did a take, I was looking down at the computer screen and was like, ‘On this line, can you sing it this way?’ And I looked over and he was mooning me. I was like, ‘I love this guy!’”
Take Me Home dropped November 9th, just nine days short of Up All Night’s first anniversary. With only seven weeks left in 2012, it became the fourth best-selling album of the year globally, moving 4.4 million copies, per the IFPI; it fell short of Adele’s 21, Taylor Swift’s Red and 1D’s own Up All Night, which had several extra months to sell 4.5 million copies.
Kotecha, Falk and Yacoub’s tracks anchored the album. Songs like “Kiss You,” “Heart Attack” and “Live While We’re Young” were pristine pop rock that One Direction delivered with full delirium, vulnerability and possibility — the essence of the teen — in voices increasingly capable of navigating all the little nuances of that spectrum. And the songs 1D helped write (“Last First Kiss,” “Back for You” and “Summer Love”) remain among the LP’s best.
“You saw that they caught the bug and were really good at it,” Kotecha says of their songwriting. “And moving forward, you got the impression that that was the way for them.”
Like clockwork, the wheels began to churn for album three right after Take Me Home dropped. But unlike those first two records, carving out dedicated studio time for LP3 was going to be difficult — on February 23rd, 2013, One Direction would launch a world tour in London, the first of 123 concerts they’d play that year. They’d have to write and record on the road, and for Kotecha and Falk — both of whom had just had kids — that just wasn’t possible.
But it was also time for a creative shift. Even Kotecha knew that from his boy band history: album three is, after all, when you start moving on. One Direction was ready, too. Kotecha credits Louis, the oldest member of the group, for “shepherding them into adulthood, away from the very pop-y stuff of the first two albums. He was leading the charge to make sure that they had a more mature sound. And at the time, being in it, it was a little difficult for me, Rami and Carl to grasp — but hindsight, that was the right thing to do.”
“For three years, this was our schedule,” Bunetta says. “We did X Factor October, November, December. Took off January. February, flew to London. We’d gather ideas with the band, come up with sounds, hang out. Then back to L.A. for March, produce some stuff, then go out on the road with them in April. Get vocals, write a song or two, come back for May, work on the vocals, and produce the songs we wrote on the road. Back to London in June-ish. Back here for July, produce it up. Go back on tour in August, get last bits of vocals, mix in September, back to X Factor in October, album out in November, January off, start it all over again.”
That cycle began in early 2013 when Bunetta and Ryan flew to London for a session that lasted just over a week, but yielded the bulk of Midnight Memories. With songwriters Jamie Scott, Wayne Hector and Ed Drewett they wrote “Best Song Ever” and “You and I,” and, with One Direction, “Diana” and “Midnight Memories.” Bunetta and Ryan’s initial rapport with the band strengthened — they were a few years older, but as Bunetta jokes, “We act like we’re 19 all the time anyway.” Years ago, Bunetta posted an audio clip documenting the creation of “Midnight Memories” — the place-holder chorus was a full-throated, perfectly harmonized, “I love KFC!”
For the most part, Bunetta, Ryan and 1D doubled down on the rock sound their predecessors had forged, but there was one outlier from that week. A stunning bit of post-Mumford festival folk buoyed by a new kind of lyrical and vocal maturity called “Story of My Life.”
“This was a make or break moment for them,” Bunetta says. “They needed to grow up, or they were gonna go away — and they wanted to grow up. To get to the level they got to, you need more than just your fan base. That song extended far beyond their fan base and made people really pay attention.”
Production on Midnight Memories continued on the road, where, like so many bands before them, One Direction unlocked a new dimension to their music. Tour engineer Alex Oriet made it possible, Ryan says, building makeshift vocal booths in hotel rooms by flipping beds up against the walls. Writing and recording was crammed in whenever — 20 minutes before a show, or right after another two-hour performance.
“It preserved the excitement of the moment,” Bunetta says. “We were just there, doing it, marinating in it at all times. You’re capturing moments instead of trying to recreate them. A lot of times we’d write a song, sing it in the hotel, produce it, then fly back out to have them re-sing it — and so many times the demo vocals were better. They hadn’t memorized it yet. They were still in the mood. There was a performance there that you couldn’t recreate.”
Midnight Memories arrived, per usual, in November 2013. And, per usual, it was a smash. The following year, 1D brought their songs to the environment they always deserved — stadiums around the world — and amid the biggest shows of their career, they worked on their aptly-titled fourth album Four. The 123 concerts 1D had played the year before had strengthened their combined vocal prowess in a way that opened up an array of new possibilities.
“We could use their voices on Four to make something sound more exciting and bigger, rather than having to add too many guitars, synths or drums,” Ryan says.
“They were so much more dynamic and subtle, too,” Bunetta adds. “I don’t think they could’ve pulled off a song like ‘Night Changes’ two albums prior; or the nuance to sing soft and emotionally on ‘Fireproof.’ It takes a lot of experience to deliver a restrained vocal that way.”
“A lot of the songs were double,” Bunetta says, “like somebody might be singing about their girlfriend, but there was another meaning that applied to the group as well.”
Musically, Four was 1D’s most expansive album yet — from the sky-high piano rock of “Steal My Girl” to the tender, tasteful groove of “Fireproof” — and it had the emotional range to match. Now in their early twenties, songs like “Where Do Broken Hearts Go,” “No Control,” “Fool’s Gold” and “Clouds” redrew the dramas and euphorias of adolescence with the new weight, wit and wanton winks of impending adulthood. One Direction wasn’t growing up normally in any sense of the word, but they were becoming songwriters capable of drawing out the most relatable elements from their extraordinary circumstances — like on “Change Your Ticket,” where the turbulent love affairs of young jet-setters are distilled to the universal pang of a long goodbye. There were real relationships inspiring these stories, but now that One Direction was four years into being the biggest band on the planet, it was natural that the relationships within the band would make it into the music as well.
“I think that on Four,” Bunetta says with a slight pause, “there were some tensions going on. A lot of the songs were double — like somebody might be singing about their girlfriend, but there was another meaning that applied to the group as well.”
He continues: “It’s tough going through that age, having to spread your wings with so many eyeballs on you, so much money and no break. It was tough for them to carve out their individual manhood, space and point of view, while learning how to communicate with each other. Even more than relationship things that were going on, that was the bigger blanket that was in there every day, seeping into the songs.”
Bunetta remembers Zayn playing him “Pillowtalk” and a few other songs for the first time through a three a.m. fog of cigarette smoke in a hotel room in Japan.
“Fucking amazing,” he says. “They were fucking awesome. I know creatively he wasn’t getting what he needed from the way that the albums were being made on the road. He wanted to lock himself in the studio and take his time, be methodical. And that just wasn’t possible.”
A month or so later, and 16 shows into One Direction’s “On the Road Again” tour, Zayn left the band. Bunetta and Ryan agree it wasn’t out of the blue: “He was frustrated and wanted to do things outside of the band,” Bunetta says. “It’s a lot for a young kid, all those shows. We’d been with them for a bunch of years at this point — it was a matter of when. You just hoped that it would wait until the last album.”
Still, Bunetta compares the loss to having a finger lopped off, and he acknowledges that Harry, Niall, Liam and Louis struggled to find their bearings as One Direction continued with their stadium tour and next album, Made in the A.M. Just as band tensions bubbled beneath the songs on Four, Zayn’s departure left an imprint on Made in the A.M. Not with any overt malice, but a song like “Drag Me Down,” Bunetta says, reflects the effort to bounce back. Even Niall pushing his voice to the limits of his range on that song wouldn’t have been necessary if Zayn and his trusty falsetto were available.
But Made in the A.M. wasn’t beholden to this shake-up. Bunetta and Ryan cite “Olivia” as a defining track, one that captures just how far One Direction had come as songwriters: They’d written it in 45 minutes, after wasting a whole day trying to write something far worse.
“When you start as a songwriter, you write a bunch of shitty songs, you get better and you keep getting better,” Ryan says. “But then you can get finicky and you’re like, ‘Maybe I have to get smart with this lyric.’ By Made in the A.M. … they were coming into their own in the sense of picking up a guitar, messing around and feeling something, rather than being like, ‘How do I put this puzzle together?’”
After Zayn’s departure, Bunetta and Ryan said it became clear that Made in the A.M. would be One Direction’s last album before some break of indeterminate length. The album boasts the palpable tug of the end, but to One Direction’s credit, that finality is balanced by a strong sense of forever. It’s literally the last sentiment they leave their fans on album-closer “History,” singing, “Baby don’t you know, baby don’t you know/We can live forever.”
In a way, Made in the A.M. is about One Direction as an entity. Not one that belonged to the group, but to everyone they spent five years making music for. Four years since their hiatus and 10 years since their formation, the fans remain One Direction’s defining legacy. Even as all five members have settled into solo careers, Ryan notes that baseless rumors of any kind of reunion — even a meager Zoom call — can still set the internet on fire. The old songs remain potent, too: Carl Falk says his nine-year-old son has taken to making TikToks to 1D tracks.
“Most of them weren’t necessarily musicians before this happened, but they loved music, and they found a love of creating, writing and playing,” Kotecha says
There are plenty of metrics to quantify One Direction’s reach, success and influence. The hard numbers — album sales and concert stubs — are staggering on their own, but the ineffable is always more fun. One Direction was such a good band that a fan, half-jokingly, but then kinda seriously, started a GoFundMe to buy out their contract and grant them full artistic freedom. One Direction was such a good band that songwriters like Kotecha and Falk — who would go on to make hits with Ariana Grande, the Weeknd and Nicki Minaj — still think about the songs they could’ve made with them. One Direction was such a good band that Mitski covered “Fireproof.”
But maybe it all comes down to the most ineffable thing of all: Chance. Kotecha compares success on talent shows like The X Factor to waking up one morning and being super cut — but now, to keep that figure, you have to work out at a 10, without having done the gradual work to reach that level. That’s the downfall for so many acts, but One Direction was not only able, but willing, to put in the work.
“They’re one of the only acts from those types of shows that managed to do it for such a long time,” Kotecha says. “Five years is a long time for a massive pop star to go nonstop. I know it was tiring, but they were fantastic sports about it. They appreciated and understood the opportunity they had — and, as you can see, they haven’t really stopped since. Most of them weren’t necessarily musicians before this happened, but they loved music, and they found a love of creating, writing and playing. To have these boys — that had been sort of randomly picked — to also have that? It will never be repeated.”
