this is my first time writing a request, so please let me know if i need to be more specific! i was wondering if you could write a desi reader x the dorm heads (twisted wonderland). like introducing the boys to the culture and stuff like that? thank you!!
YES OF COURSE!!!! I’m desi myself! We desperately need representation in anime/game spaces, these are just the ones I could think of one the spot, but I saw this request and it made my day!!
also fun fact: this blog was originally supposed to be centered around desi women, but I couldn’t keep up with that idea, this is such a lovely reminder!!
Warnings: Fluff, food, hair mentioned, ‘starting a family’ mention but no kids or anything, unapologetic cultural appreciation, desi families (positive), author calls the pale ones gora pakoras, rambling
Dorm Leaders with a Desi Girlfriend!
Tumblr media
Riddle Rosehearts
I don’t think you understand how much your mom loves him
His spice tolerance is at ZERO, but boy will he try for you
He adores gulab jamuns, I mean ROSES?? WITH DESSERT?? This is his destiny
Adores chai, drinks more chai than all your aunts combined
He loves chai so much he’ll ask for you to make it for the tea parties, drinks the chai with biscuits
OFF WITH THEIR HEAD to anyone who calls it ‘chai tea’ !!!
Desi jewelry is his favorite thing you wear, the intricate patterns and shapes make his heart beat faster
If you get him jewelry he’s probably gonna cry
“You look absolutely gorgeous, I almost can't believe you’re with me.”
Leona Kingscholar
The mix of y’all’s cultures is perfect
He will happily eat spicy meat, he can go on about the meat
Biryani is his favorite, goat or chicken
You might expect me to say your parents don’t like him, but HE’S LITERALLY A PRINCE, man is rich asf you’re gonna be taken care of
He’s also so respectful to your mom, she def tells you to act more like him
If you have to accompany him to some gaudy event in the savanna, and  you choose to wear cultural clothing, like a sari or salwar kameez, he’s literally frozen
o
m
g
He’s buying a ring as we speak
All the whatsapp aunties are gossiping about the two of you, but you literally couldn’t care
He’s def the type to buy you jewelry
“I- god for once in my life I literally don’t have words, you’re glowing.”
Azul Ashengrotto
I will defend fishy fishman until my last day
he is such a good boyfriend, always treating you out and keeping you happy
Your parents support you two, because Azul has a good head on his shoulders and has a good chance of being successful
He really adores you in blue, especially blue lehengas, you look like a princess to him
he is super appreciative whenever you introduce him to new recipes, his lounge may even use some of the spice blends you suggest (with credit)
He enjoys paneer pakoras, fried desi food is a wonder to him
“I know I’m stuffing my face right now, but can you really blame me?”
Kalim Al-Asim
HE IS PERFECT !!
He’s so happy to meet someone of a similar culture to him!
But this is also where his main problem lies..
He’s so blushy around you its crazy
Never did he think he could meet someone who he knows so well, who feels like home and warm welcomes
You two go on so many adventures
Jamil is so tired, let my man rest
Sometimes the cultural overlap is so prominent, especially in words and food items
Both of you adore a good lamb curry
You ever see that tikitok trend, the “I can’t date outside of my culture because how am I supposed to explain _______”
You both can relate to that one.
Something about you brings out the poet in him
(I have to stop eventually because this could just become it’s own post)
“You are my home, you are warmth and kindness packed into a beautiful human being.”
Vil Shoenheit
THIS
He’s honestly so happy to be in a relationship with a desi girl, you open up a whole new world to him
I feel like he would be an appreciator of desi bread on his cheat days
Especially paratha, it’s so buttery and rich, he’ll eat it with achaar
Your clothes always astound him
He’s used to glitz and glamour, but the sheer amount of detail in your outfits, that will leave him speechless
I believe he’d enjoy salwar kameez, especially in a more early 2000s way (think kabhi khushi kahbie gham)
Honestly he enjoys everything about desi fashion, he deeply respects you for wearing those HEAVY
Helps you oil your hair, it’s an extremely intimate moment and you grow a lot closer together
“Liebling, please hold still, I still have to get to the back of your head!”
Idia Shroud
(He’s Greek in my heart)
Idia is such a little loser/pos
He’s so nervous at any of your family gatherings, ortho has to hype him up before
He’s definitely the person at a desi house party who slips away after the food is served, literally gone
If he ever visits your country (in a different dimension lol) he might have a tough time
Homie is so sensitive to hot weather, he’s getting sunburned so hard
He gets so shy when you’re all dolled up, he can’t even look you in the eye
You just look so above his league
This is where you build his confidence, because he would look gorgeous in desi clothes
Him in a kurta is the thing that would actually kill me
Idia is obsessed with you, even if the time you spend together is spent inside his room, cuddled up watching anime or playing games instead of socializing
You probably get him into old bollywood movies
“I mean, we ate already, what’s the point of sticking around?”
Malleus Draconia
He’s a well educated person, so he probably keeps a respectful distance until you start educating him on your culture
Malleus deeply enjoys the sense of family in desi culture, the community that helps one another and keeps your head lifted
It reminds him of his own caring upbringing
He’s another appreciator of desi desserts, more modern ones tend to stick to him better, like mango ice cream
He is smitten with Rooh Afza in milk, even if he doesn’t need human drinks
He finds your cultural apparel so pretty
especially if you wear deeper colors like emerald and black
He really just wants to match
Really enjoys historical drama bollywood movies
Is the type to tell you when your chunni is slipping off, and carries extra safety pins to help with fashion mishaps
“I hope one day, our own family will be a beautiful as this.”
I’m so sorry for the bad dialogue, every time I try to think of something a character says, the voice in my head (inner monologue) turns into bob belcher from bob’s burgers. I will be trying my best to fix the flat dialogue with better nicknames and stuff. Thank you for reading.

dunmesh anime and my subsequent reading of the manga happened at such a good time because my main Thing for the year has been food. I have a new years resolution thing that anytime i eat at a restaurant i have to try something I've never had before (or if the menu is rather limited, something I haven't had in a long time, or from this particular place). Last night I had lamb biryani from an indian place last night and it was really good! a solid new food! I also am trying really hard to cook as much as I can, and learn new cooking methods, buy new higher quality cooking supplies (next paycheck: brand new spices for my spice rack and a new sharp knife), etc. And it's just been nice having Laios and Co. going along on a food journey with me :)
Anyways, I'm baking coffee cake banana bread right now (I made this recipe last week as well) and it smells nice :) fed is best and making food personal can really really improve your relationships with it!

 The Flavorful Journey of SpoonSome
Biryani: A Culinary Tale
Introduction:
SpoonSome Biryani, a culinary delight that transcends borders and unites taste buds, has a journey as rich and diverse as its aromatic flavors. From humble beginnings to becoming a symbol of culinary excellence, the story of SpoonSome Biryani is a testament to the passion and dedication of its creators.
Biriyani
Biryani, a fragrant and flavorful one-pot dish, has captured the hearts and palates of millions across India. Whether it’s a festive occasion, a family gathering, or a simple weeknight dinner, biryani graces the table with its aromatic presence. In this article, we’ll explore the rich history, diverse variations, and the magic behind this beloved culinary masterpiece.
Origin of Biriyani
Biryani’s origins are shrouded in mystery, with various theories tracing it back to Persia, the Mughal courts, or even ancient India. Regardless of its beginnings, biryani has evolved over centuries, blending local ingredients, spices, and cooking techniques.
The Mughals, known for their opulent feasts, elevated biryani to an art form. They combined Persian pilaf techniques with Indian flavors, creating a harmonious symphony of rice, meat, and spices.
Regional Variations
Hyderabadi Biryani: The Nizams of Hyderabad perfected this style. It’s a marriage of Mughlai and local Telugu flavors. The raw biryani involves layering marinated meat and partially cooked rice, sealing the pot, and slow-cooking it.
Lucknowi Biryani: Awadhi biryani is fragrant and delicate. It uses saffron-infused rice and slow-cooked meat, often garnished with fried onions and raisins.
Malabar Biryani: Kerala’s Malabar coast offers a spicy version with coconut milk, curry leaves, and a hint of sweetness.
Sindhi Biryani: Influenced by Pakistani cuisine, Sindhi biryani features marinated meat, potatoes, and aromatic spices.
Origin Story:
The tale of SpoonSome Biryani begins in the bustling streets of Trivandrum, where a young man named Vysakh honed their craft in the art of biryani-making. Inspired by the rich culinary heritage of the region, a group of young entrepreneurs set out to create a biryani experience like no other. Thus, SpoonSome Biryani was born, blending traditional recipes with modern innovation.
On streets in India, where flavors collide and cultures intertwine, there exists a biryani that defies convention. Spoonsome Biryani, born from the creative mind of entrepreneur Vysakh, is more than just a dish – it’s an experience.
Spoonsome, a maverick in the culinary world, envisioned a biryani that would transcend boundaries. Our journey began with a simple question: “What if we reimagine the classic biryani?”
Spoonsome Biryani emerged as the answer – a fusion of tradition and innovation, where every grain of rice tells a story.
Early Beginnings
Recipe Perfection:
At the heart of SpoonSome Biryani's success lies its signature recipe, carefully crafted over years of experimentation and refinement. The secret blend of aromatic spices, tender meat, and fragrant basmati rice creates a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate with every bite.
Each ingredient is meticulously selected to ensure the perfect balance of taste and texture, making SpoonSome Biryani a true culinary masterpiece.
Magic of Biriyani
Basmati Rice The canvas for Spoonsome Biryani, aged basmati rice, forms the foundation. Each grain absorbs the essence of spices and marinated meat.
Marinated Meat Whether succulent chicken, tender lamb, or fragrant fish, the choice of meat defines the biryani. Spoonsome secret lies in the marinade – yogurt, spices, and love.
Spices of Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and star anise dance together, creating a symphony of flavors. Spoonsome spice blend is a guarded treasure.
Herbs Fresh mint, cilantro, and curry leaves add brightness and balance. Their whispers infuse every layer.
Making Delicious Dums
Biryani’s magic lies in the “dum” method. The pot is sealed with dough or cloth, trapping steam and flavors. The slow, gentle heat ensures that every grain of rice absorbs the essence of the spices and meat.
The unveiling of a biryani pot is akin to opening a treasure chest – the aroma escapes, and anticipation reaches its peak.
The Lightness Within
Spoonsome challenges the notion that biryani must be heavy. His creation is a delicate balance – rich in flavor yet light on the palate.
No excessive oil or ghee here. Instead, he achieves depth through spices and technique.
The Aroma
As you approach spoonsome, the air changes. It becomes a canvas, painted with the fragrant strokes of cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. The spices, carefully measured, release their essence – a promise of what’s to come. The aroma dances around you, teasing your senses.
Spoonsome Biryani: A Culinary Symphony of Flavor
In the heart of bustling markets, where the air is thick with spice and anticipation, lies a biryani that defies convention. Spoonsome Biryani, born from the creative genius of entrepreneur Vysakh, transcends mere sustenance. It’s an orchestra of taste, a symphony of fragrance, and a celebration of culinary artistry.

Bangalore Dum Biryani
Originating from Bangalore, this biryani is usually made with lamb, fish, or chicken. It leans toward the milder side in terms of spice but promises delightful flavors in every spoonful. Often served at Muslim weddings, it’s a favorite among Bangaloreans.
Meen Biryani (Kerala Coastal Flavors)
Hailing from the coastal regions of Kerala, Meen Biryani celebrates the bounty of the sea. “Meen” means fish, and this biryani layers spiced fish with rice, fried cashews, caramelized onions, and aromatic spices. It’s a scrumptious ode to Kerala’s culinary heritage.
Thalassery Biryani (Kozhikode Biryani)
With its Arab origins, Thalassery Biryani is popular along the Malabar coast. It uses a distinct rice variety called Jeerakasala or Khyma, which is fragrant, short, and thin. The biryani is cooked with mouthwatering aromatics, and ghee, and topped with fried raisins and cashews, creating a royal touch.
Beary Biryani (Mangalorean Delicacy)
Contrary to the usual spicy biryanis, Beary Biryani is mildly spiced. Originating from the coastal areas of Dakshina Kannada, it’s a Mangalorean delight. The subtle aroma of fennel seeds sets it apart, and it tastes even better the next day.
Ulavacharu Biryani (Andhra Pradesh Specialty)
A household recipe from Andhra Pradesh, Ulavacharu Biryani is spicy and aromatic. It features fennel, cloves, star anise, and the unique biryani flower. A tip: Cook the rice in the same water where the chicken is boiled to enhance the flavors.

1/800 of biryani for 800: all in one pot sear lamb shanks, remove, caramelize onions, briefly sautee ginger garlic and tomato paste, VERY briefly sautee garam masala, coriander, chili, asafoetida, whole cumin, turmeric, paprika, add enough water to make pasty, add back in shanks, smear paste on, add ~an inch of stock + saffron, stew/pressure til shanks tender, remove all, strain liquid, add washed basmati + liquid to (cover + 1cm), add back in strained solids + dry fruit, cook to cook rice :D
Is it really an authentic recipe if it mixes inches and centimeters?

Biryani Cravings on a Diet: How to Indulge Guilt-Free
The aromatic blend of spices, fluffy rice, and tender meat (or vegetables) in biryani is a culinary symphony that's hard to resist. But for those on a diet, the guilt associated with this delicious dish can often outweigh the pleasure. Fear not, biryani lovers! You can still savor the flavors of this iconic dish while keeping your diet goals on track. Here's how:
Tumblr media
1. Understand the Nutritional Content
Before diving in, it's essential to understand the nutritional composition of biryani. A typical serving can range from 300 to 600 calories, depending on the ingredients and preparation method. It's generally high in carbohydrates from rice, protein from meat or legumes, and fat from oil or ghee used in cooking. While this might seem daunting, making informed choices can help you manage your intake.
2. Choose Leaner Protein Sources
If you're opting for a non-vegetarian biryani, choose leaner protein sources like chicken breast or fish. These options are lower in saturated fat compared to red meat like lamb or beef. For vegetarians, paneer (Indian cottage cheese) or tofu can be excellent substitutes, providing protein without the added fat.
3. Mindful Rice Selection
White rice is the traditional choice for biryani, but it's high in simple carbohydrates, which can lead to blood sugar spikes. Consider using brown rice or quinoa as healthier alternatives. These grains are rich in fiber, which keeps you feeling full for longer and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
4. Cook with Healthy Fats
While fat adds flavor and richness to biryani, using healthy fats can significantly reduce the calorie content. Opt for olive oil or avocado oil instead of ghee or butter. These oils contain monounsaturated fats, which are beneficial for heart health.
5. Spice It Up
The beauty of biryani lies in its aromatic spices. These spices not only tantalize your taste buds but also offer health benefits. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, cumin aids digestion, and cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar. Don't hold back on the spices!
6. Load Up on Vegetables
Adding plenty of vegetables to your biryani is a great way to boost its nutritional value and increase its volume without adding extra calories. Bell peppers, carrots, peas, and cauliflower are just a few examples of vegetables that complement the flavors of biryani.
7. Portion Control is Key
Even with healthier modifications, portion control is crucial when indulging in biryani on a diet. A small serving of 1 cup is usually sufficient to satisfy your cravings without derailing your goals. Use a smaller plate to trick your mind into feeling satisfied with a smaller portion.
8. Balance Your Meal
Pair your biryani with a side of raita (yogurt-based dip) or salad to add balance to your meal. Raita provides probiotics, which are beneficial for gut health, while salad adds fiber and vitamins.
9. Cook at Home
When you cook biryani at home, you have complete control over the ingredients and cooking methods. This allows you to make healthier choices, such as using less oil, opting for leaner protein, and incorporating more vegetables.
10. Don't Deprive Yourself
Remember, enjoying your favorite foods in moderation is part of a sustainable diet. Completely depriving yourself of biryani might lead to cravings and eventually overindulgence. Allow yourself an occasional treat, but be mindful of your portion size and balance it with other healthy meals.
Additional Tips:
Leftovers: If you have leftover biryani, store it properly in the refrigerator and consume it within a couple of days to avoid spoilage.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and prevent overeating.
Physical Activity: Regular exercise helps burn calories and maintain a healthy weight.
Recipes for Healthier Biryani:
Many online resources and cookbooks offer healthier biryani recipes. Look for variations that use brown rice, lean protein, plenty of vegetables, and healthier cooking methods like baking or steaming.
Savor the Flavor, Not the Guilt: Your Guide to Guilt-Free Biryani
By making smart choices and following these tips, you can enjoy the deliciousness of biryani without compromising your diet goals. Remember, it's all about balance and moderation. Indulge in your favorite dish guilt-free and savor every bite!

Is Biryani Healthy? A Dietician's Perspective
Biryani is a beloved dish enjoyed by many across the globe. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, this fragrant and flavorful rice dish combines spices, rice, and usually some form of meat or vegetables. But is biryani healthy? As with many complex questions about diet and nutrition, the answer isn’t straightforward. Let's delve into biryani's nutritional profile and examine it from a dietician's perspective to determine whether it can be a part of a healthy diet.
Tumblr media
The Ingredients of Biryani
To assess the healthiness of biryani, it’s important to break down its primary ingredients:
Rice: Typically, biryani is made with basmati rice, a long-grain variety known for its aromatic properties. Rice is a staple carbohydrate, providing energy and some essential nutrients. However, white rice has a high glycemic index, meaning it can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels.
Meat or Protein Source: Biryani can include chicken, beef, lamb, seafood, or even tofu for a vegetarian version. The protein source can significantly impact the dish's nutritional value. Lean meats like chicken provide high-quality protein with less fat compared to lamb or beef.
Vegetables: Depending on the recipe, biryani may include a variety of vegetables such as carrots, peas, potatoes, and tomatoes. These add vitamins, minerals, and fiber, enhancing the dish's nutritional profile.
Spices and Herbs: Spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, cardamom, and cloves are essential to biryani, not just for flavor but also for their health benefits. Many spices have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Fat: Ghee (clarified butter) or oil is typically used in biryani for cooking. While ghee is rich in saturated fats, it also contains fat-soluble vitamins. The type and amount of fat used can affect the overall healthiness of the dish.
Dairy: Some biryani recipes include yogurt or cream, which adds richness and flavor. Yogurt can provide probiotics and additional protein, while cream increases the calorie and fat content.
Nutritional Analysis
From a dietician’s perspective, the nutritional content of biryani can vary widely based on the ingredients and preparation methods. Here are some key nutritional aspects to consider:
Calories
Biryani can be quite calorie-dense due to the combination of rice, meat, and fat. A typical serving can range from 300 to 500 calories or more, depending on portion size and ingredients. Managing portion size is crucial for those monitoring their caloric intake.
Macronutrients
Carbohydrates: Rice is the primary source of carbohydrates in biryani. While carbs are essential for energy, it’s important to balance them with proteins and fats to avoid blood sugar spikes.
Proteins: The protein content depends on the type and amount of meat or alternative protein used. Lean meats or plant-based proteins can make biryani a good source of protein.
Fats: The use of ghee or oil contributes to the fat content. Ghee adds saturated fats, while oils like vegetable oil or olive oil might add unsaturated fats. Moderation is key to keeping fat intake within healthy limits.
Micronutrients
Biryani can be rich in vitamins and minerals, especially if it includes vegetables and spices. For example, turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and vegetables add fiber, vitamins A and C, and potassium.
Health Benefits
When prepared mindfully, biryani can offer several health benefits:
Balanced Nutrition: With the right mix of protein, carbohydrates, and fats, biryani can provide a balanced meal.
Rich in Spices: The spices used in biryani have various health benefits. For example, turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, and cumin aids digestion.
Inclusion of Vegetables: Adding a variety of vegetables boosts the fiber and nutrient content, supporting digestive health and providing essential vitamins and minerals.
Potential Health Concerns
Despite its benefits, there are some potential health concerns associated with biryani:
High Caloric Content: Biryani can be calorie-dense, making it easy to consume more calories than intended, which could lead to weight gain if eaten frequently in large portions.
Saturated Fat: The use of ghee and cream can increase the saturated fat content, which is linked to heart disease when consumed in excess.
Sodium: Depending on the recipe, biryani can be high in sodium, particularly if prepared with pre-made spice mixes or added salt. High sodium intake is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular issues.
Tips for Healthier Biryani
To enjoy biryani as part of a healthy diet, consider these tips:
Control Portions: Serve biryani in smaller portions and balance it with a side of vegetables or a salad to ensure a balanced meal.
Use Lean Proteins: Choose lean meats like chicken or plant-based proteins to reduce fat content.
Add More Vegetables: Increase the vegetable content to boost fiber and nutrients.
Moderate the Use of Ghee and Cream: Use oils with healthier fat profiles, like olive oil, and limit the use of cream.
Opt for Brown Rice: Consider using brown basmati rice for added fiber and a lower glycemic index.
Reduce Sodium: Make your own spice blend to control sodium levels and use salt sparingly.
