Text
is it wrong that i still like harry potter but not like the source material or the author at all? i like the fanon harry potter where diversity thrives, and characters are fleshed out?
like i don’t like the original source materal at all anymore i just wanna take the characters and the basic story and make a whole new story without r*wling’s influence?

they is not knowing that we is knowing how to take the lives we is wanting from them. and that is why they is not thinking about how many weapons they is putting in kitchens.
tom riddle had nothing to do with the death of hepzibah smith. hokey had just had enough of being a slave.
sparkling cyanide hokey & hepzibah smith general | 1.4k words
this piece was written for week fourteen of @ladiesofhpfest, which focuses on the non-human ladies of the harry potter series (you can find the masterlist of the week’s fics here), which, here, means hokey, the house elf enslaved by hepzibah smith. or, as we shall call her from hereon out, eokhí, which is how her name is accurately transcribed from the elvish language (more on which below).
for a story which only has 1,400 words, there is a lot to say about this one. some author’s notes under the cut:
the title is the same as that of agatha christie’s 1945 novel sparkling cyanide - published in the united states as remembered death - for which there are some spoilers immediately to follow. it is not, let me be frank, agatha’s best (not least because it’s a rewrite of a poirot short story, ‘the yellow iris’) but there are several things about it which appealed to me when i was writing this: that it deals with a death initially presumed not to be murder; that it has multiple suspects, including a young man who appears to desire wealth; and that the murder weapon is a poisoned drink.
the poison - in christie’s case and in mine - is potassium cyanide. this is obviously a deviation from what we are told in half-blood prince - in which dumbledore describes the poison used to kill hepzibah as ‘rare’ - since cyanide is probably one of the better known methods of doing away with troublesome old ladies, but it has been my headcanon for quite a while: cyanide looks very similar to sugar; it's highly soluble; its bitter taste requires something sweet (like cocoa) to mask it; it kills its victim extremely quickly; and it wouldn’t be completely bizarre for it to be found in a wizarding house. cyanide was a standard component of silver polish until surprisingly recently, and i am choosing to believe that this is the same in the wizarding world. in her interview with the aurors, eokhí just happens to mention that hepzibah wanted a pair of silver candlesticks polished the day she died, and everyone considers the matter settled.
i’ve always been fascinated by the murder of hepzibah smith, not least because - as it’s described in canon - it’s a massive deviation from voldemort’s usual modus operandi. hepzibah is the only person we know to have been poisoned by him, and the only person we know to have been killed using - essentially - a muggle method (even if the poison in jkr’s head is magical, stirring it into a cup of cocoa isn’t). above all, i am obsessed about what it says about voldemort that the hyper-feminine (even if the text treats her attempts at femininity as ridiculous - something which eokhí agrees with) hepzibah is killed in such a feminine-coded way: poison is known in pop-culture as a ‘woman’s weapon’ - even if statistical evidence doesn’t confirm this - and a domestic one; and the image of hepzibah dying in her own home, over a cosy cup of cocoa, as punishment for insulting voldemort’s mother (whose death kept him from that experience) is really striking.
a part of the murder which is more usual for voldemort is that he frames someone else. however, unlike with his framing of morfin gaunt for the murder of the three riddles, which is made to look deliberate, he makes eokhí’s involvement in hepzibah’s death look accidental, and eokhí appears to receive no punishment from the ministry of magic. this undoubtedly has nothing to do with any compassion for her on voldemort’s part; he chooses it because it’s the most plausible cover he can give himself, and this must be because wizards know that elves cannot deliberately harm their masters.
or, at least, think they know that.
poison’s association with women and the domestic sphere obviously means it has a reputation for being the means by which servants bump off their masters - and, specifically, how female servants bump off their mistresses. i very much like the idea of witches laughing in a self-satisfied way, thinking that they never have to worry - like silly old muggles - about being done away with by their cooks, while the loophole which elves have noticed and have been exploiting for centuries stares them right in the face. because we see in canon that elves are perfectly capable of indirectly harming their masters - dobby spends the entirety of chamber of secrets doing it - and so, when eokhí decides she has had enough of her mistreatment at hepzibah’s hands, all she has to do is get the poison out of the cupboard, put it in a dish, and let hepzibah choke on her own arrogance.
eokhí is a type of elf we only see glimpses of in canon - one who does not want to be a slave. the house-elf plotline is the weakest in the series for many reasons, but one i always find particularly galling is that dobby’s revolutionary zeal in chamber of secrets, in which he talks of whisper networks of elves decrying their ill-treatment at the hands of wizards and celebrating voldemort’s death, vanishes in goblet of fire, when the standard elvish position seems to correspond with the wizarding one: that being a slave is great and wanting freedom is bizarre.
eokhí said fuck that. this story is one of disrespect and rage and revenge, and of the triumphant pleasure of reclaiming the space which was once used to oppress you, as eokhí goes from waking up in a nest of blankets on the kitchen floor - because she’s not allowed a real bed, unlike hepzibah - to eating the cakes she has always been denied while hepzibah lies dead in the parlour.
it is also a story of language.
we hear several elves speak in canon, although only three in any great detail: dobby, winky, and kreacher. there are differences across their speech - dobby and kreacher tend to speak in the third-person, winky tends to speak in the first-person; kreacher uses the present continuous the least, winky uses it the most - but none speak in standard british (or american) english, and there are similarities - such as a tendency to use non-standard conjugations of verbs (‘i is not sure you did dobby a favour, sir’) - among all three.
in harry potter, characters who speak in non-standard english are generally coded in one of three ways: foreign (fleur, krum); simple-minded (hagrid); or shifty (mundungus fletcher, amycus carrow). which - if any - of these readings is intended for elves is up for debate, although my own view is that elves’ language is intended to make the reader agree with the standard wizarding opinion that they are less sophisticated or rational than humans and that their subordinate position in wizarding society is natural and justifiable. this is, obviously, something the text partially pulls the rug from under - the underestimation of both dobby and kreacher’s powers and agency is a significant contributor to harry’s victory - but it always feels, given the series’ failure to fully stick the landing on whether it thinks slavery is a bad thing, not as pointed or ironic as it may have been intended to be.
i prefer to think of elves as having their own language, used among themselves, to which wizards have no access. but i also think that it does them a disservice to think of the language they use to interact with wizards as simply non-standard - or, more dismissively, ‘broken’ - english. i think we should imagine that all adult elves are fluent speakers of two languages: the elvish language; and what we might call elvish creole, which - like all creole languages - is not a dialect, but a full language in its own right.
eokhí’s story is written in this language. some of its linguistic features are:
phonetics: in goblet of fire, dobby is shown to think that ron’s surname is pronounced ‘wheezy’. he thinks this because the elvish language of course has its own phonetics, which particularly affect the transcription of proper nouns which are not habitually used in elvish or elvish creole. two examples are important to this story: the elvish language doesn’t have an aspirated h- (as in, how a speaker of standard british english would pronounce ‘hokey’) and it doesn’t have a plosive p- (as in, how a speaker of standard british english would pronounce ‘hepzibah’). that hepzibah expects eokhí to pronounce her name properly and yet doesn’t extend this basic courtesy to her should not surprise us.
names: three elves we meet in canon - dobby, winky, and hokey - have names which end in an ‘ee’ sound. as eokhí explains, this is because elves are usually named after nouns, and the nominative singular of nouns in the elvish language end in -í. plural nouns end in -é. [kreacher’s name appears to be an adaptation of the word ‘creature’, which suggests that he was dehumanised to such an extent that his masters wouldn’t even make an attempt to pronounce his real name.]
elves do not speak the names of their dead. eokhí refers only to eokhí’s mother, rather than using the name she had when she was living. wizards do not realise they are being disrespected when elves use their names after they are gone.
pronouns: the elves we see in canon tend to use illeism. that is, they refer to themselves in the third-person singular - he, she - most of the time. although winky uses the first-person singular - i - regularly, dobby only uses it occasionally, and kreacher never does. they also tend to use their own names as pronouns - ‘kreacher is cleaning’ - particularly when needing to add emphasis or clarity to sentences. eokhí never uses the first-person singular, for reasons connected to elves’ traditions about the self. she would explain to us that when elves refer to themselves as ‘i’, they are choosing to speak standard english for the benefit of their wizarding audience, and she doesn’t feel hepzibah deserves that effort.
verbs: the elves we see in canon generally only use the third-person singular of verbs - 'i says' - regardless of pronoun choice. eokhí does the same, since both elvish and elvish creole have no plural verb forms and only one grammatical person, once again connected to elves’ traditions about the self.
the elves we meet in canon also tend to use the present continuous - ‘my master is telling winky some things’ - frequently, often in a context which would not feel intuitive for speakers of standard english. in eokhí’s speech, the present continuous is used to show actions which are repeated or habitual - ‘eokhí is waking up one morning in her nest on the kitchen floor’ - while the simple present refers both to general statements of fact - ‘eokhí is a slave’ - or to one-off actions ‘eokhí decides that is it’. in the past tense, similar principles apply: eokhí uses the past continuous - the smith family ‘was wanting to be looked after’ by eokhí’s mother - to describe repeated or habitual actions and the simple past for general or singular events. the future continuous is used both for actions which will be repeated or habitual and for actions which will take a indeterminate time to conclude - ‘eokhí is going to be fighting back’, her battle is not just done with hepzibah dead - rather than simple actions with a defined end-point - ‘she will eat’.

Ao3 fic writers questions. I was tagged by @batnbreakfast and @slightlyintimidating , thank you both!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
109
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
409, 456
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Recent fics are Berena (holby City) and all creatures great and small (2020 version).
Previous fandoms include Ted lasso, doctor who, the durrells and cabin pressure.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Cherry cake (Ted lasso, Ted x trent)
But that's what happens (doctor who, thasmin)
I promise I will do my best (to be true to myself) (holby City, berena)
Observations of trent crimm (the independent) (Ted lasso, Ted x Rebecca)
Rocket ships and shooting stars (Ted lasso, Ted x trent).
These definitely show which the biggest fandom is, rather than my best work. Who would have thought Ted x trent would blow up like it did!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, though sometimes very late. I appreciate the comments I get so I want to show that!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
In her dreams (holby City, berena) which when I wrote it was canon compliant with bernie being dead and then serena died at the end of the fic.
I don't like angst and will almost always write it with a happy ending if I do have to write it.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my other fics to be honest. The guy (or girl) gets the guy (or girl) and they live happily ever after.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Only once and it was about an actor, not the fic.
9. Do you write smut?
When the mood takes me 😅
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I've written, um, maybe 3 crossovers? None of them are particularly crazy.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of...
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone once asked to translate a thasmin one. I don't know if they ever did though.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Once, with the lovely and mysterious @slightlyintimidating . It was great fun! Definitely recommend
14. What's your all time favourite ship?
Haha... ha. Nope, can't answer that! I love all my ships.
15. What's a wip you want to finish but probably won't?
Happy to say that all my published fic is complete. At the moment, I'd just like to be in the mood to write anything at all really.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm pretty good at keeping people in character.
I think my dialogue is OK most of the time?
17. What are your writing weaknesses
Description. Urgh. Just imagine something in your head and pretend I described it please.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't think it works. If you're fluent and can write something that's not a mess, your audience might not be fluent to understand it. And if you're not then just... no. Write it in whatever language your fic is in and say its that other language.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter. Didn't publish it as I didn't even realise fanfic was a thing back then.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
Might be recency bias, but Home Front (acgas, Siegfried x audrey). I reread it recently and loved it. It has a good plot, the characters are solid, the OCs are good, the setting is good, the animals are lovely.
I'm doing this on my phone and I can't rewrite the questions out. Sorry. If you would like to answer these, consider yourself tagged!

Hello friends. Yet another post on a topic literally no one here signed up for but the blog is about my hyperfixation of the month so here we are
I have been reading dramione. I know in my last post i said i was ki da over dramione after a couple of fics because i find the pairing too toxic but i only kinda lied because i have just reread the like 4 dramione fics i found and liked and now i will review them. Technically i have read/started more than 4 but i won't be commenting on fics i didn't like because that isn't fair to the writers.
The first one was manacled. Which i know what a fucking reintroduction to the fandom. But i am no young newbie. I used to read and rewrite A LOT of harry potter fic and while its still fuck jk rowling, she doesn't financially benefit from fic and i heard years ago that she doesn't like fic so. I hope its all a big fuck u to her.
Anyway, manacled. Wow!!! What the fuck???? It has lived rent free in my head ever since. I literally cannot stop thinking about it. If ever i reentered the harry potter fic world let it be known that it would be so i can write fanfic of this fanfic. A couple points - manacled is kinda overly long and would benefit from an editor/beta reader, but I heard senlinyu wrote it on her phone while nursing a baby and just???? Idk what her day job is, but that woman needs to be doing creative writing mfas, writers workshops, residencies, whatever. That is extraordinary creative talent.
I think the first part with hermione in the manor was a bit overly long and too torture porn ish. A lot of the scenes bordered into the unnecessarily gratituous. But overall, it was well plotted, well written, and gut wrenching. The last section takes my breath away
The second fic i read was Remain Nameless. And while i kinda don't love smut (it makes me a little uncomfy) i think remain nameless is a perfrct example of fanfic as a genre. Within fic, there are obviously genres, but there are stylistic elements and things that I think makes fanfiction a genre in itself. Remain Nameless is an exploration of character that goes beyond the confines of conventional or traditionally publish-able story structure. It is too long, too drawn out, too indulgent to be a traditionally published story. If i swap out the names and details in Manacled or Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in love (up next) out, its a probably close to a stand alone novel, but Remain Nameless relies on you knowing and already caring about Draco and Hermione. I don't mean that disparagingly at all, I just think sometimes people don't realize that fanfic should be different from traditionally published novels and that is a benefit of the genre. I think Remain Nameless is great. Its an indulgent, fluffy read that takes two broken people and slowly puts them back together again. Its like a hug in book format.
My next one is DMATMOOBIL!! I loved this one. And the author??? You cannot convince me that this fic was not written by someone with literal years of publishing experience in contemporary romance. No way. Its too good. Not just in a good writing way. Manacled is good in an unfiltered, raw talent way, but DMATMOOBIL is polished. The plot is perfectly structured and then each chapter within that is perfectly structured. I loved it. It wad witty, funny, heartfelt, and exciting. Not sure what more I can say about it. It reads like published fiction both in its polish and readability, and I think of all the fics I read has the best worldbuilding. It is truly exciting to read about the possibilities of magical and muggle science colliding in this book and bringing their world to the 21st century.
The last fic i read was Green Light by SereneMusafir. I thought it was so good but would benefit from being split into two maybe even three books. Green Light features a journalist coming to interview Draco many years after the events of the book, so that kinda complicates splitting it up, but as it stands, the story parts are too vast and thematically disparate to be one book. The first part has Draco and Hermione on an expedition in the desert to find a archeological myth and the writing is extraoridinary. Its poetic and cinematic. But I think at times it all tries to do too much. Like I said, the whole thing needs to be split up but each chapter also needs to be a bit shorter. Again, I don't mean cutting content, but rather restructuring. As it is, I read an incredible scene, but then there's like 5 more scenes of something else, and by the time I'm at the end of the chapter, I've kinda forgotten what amazing prose I read earlier on. Things get lost in this way. Beautiful passages buried.
I think two or three books would also allow each thematic section to be explored better. Idk i thought about this one a lot. I likely will not reread Green Light the way I have reread the others on this list, but other than Manacled, it is the one I think about most. Its the most ambitious plot wise and it kinda got lost in that ambition but I think it has so much potential and was over all very good.
Anyway. That is the end to this book review no one asked for. I will likely not be reading more dramione. So here ends that brief of excellent phase.

having a hard time working on i slam the door and i'm on my way rn because i actually dislike writing angst lol. not going to stop updating ofc but updates will be sporattic like i said, even if the first few chapters had a weekly update schedule (i updated pretty much every weekend)
anyways, i thought i'd do quick intros to all the fics i have in the works (+ a re intro to istdaiomw for anyone who doesn't know what it is)
Tumblr media
teen and up | no archive warnings apply | multiple relationships | incomplete a jegulus-centered fic with background sirius x remus and lily x evan x barty. might (probably will) also have dorlene.
takes place during the war and follows multiple povs (so far james, regulus, and - soon - evan). basically just a what-if if regulus ran away from his family and joined james & sirius at the potters'.
you can find this fic here!
Tumblr media
teen and up | no archive warnings apply | multiple relationships | not yet published (or written 💀)
the next wip on this list is troublemakers, which is something i've had in the back of my mind for a while now. originally it centered around lily, rose, and my oc lucy, but i recently i decided to change it so the two povs are lucy and albus's.
basically, it follows (or will follow) albus, the only slytherin in his immediate family, who feels overshadowed by his famous siblings and his friends, who two of which have just become prefects. the fic will show him reconnecting with his family and basically carving out a niche for himself (and will have scorbus)
it will also follow my oc, lucy weasley-wood. she often feels like the laughingstock of her family - like albus, overshadowed by her friends and cousins: confident lily and smart rose. this fic will show her also carving out a niche for herself and might have some romance between her and another oc of mine, a deamus child named henry :)
basically just a dual pov fic about two cousins finding themselves
Tumblr media
teen and up | character death | multiple relationships | also unpublished & not yet written
a place called home is the name of the series rewrite i'm currently plotting and i love it sm honestly lol
this rewrite would be very headcanony and would be harry's pov. basically, in this world harry was adopted and raised by the lovegood family and is the older brother of luna. also, pandora doesn't die. xenophilius is lucius malfoy's disowned older brother so luna, harry, and draco are cousins.
the main crew in this fic would be harry, hermione, blaise, and pansy with quite a bit of draco and some luna. harry, pansy, and draco are slytherins while hermione, blaise, and luna are ravenclaws. (this fic will/would have pretty heavy ron bashing for most of it but he gets a redemption arc i promise ;-; not like we really get to see it but yknow i tried)
the focus of this fic is friendship, so no one in the main crew is dating, but the endgame ships are harry x cedric, hermione x cho, and draco x blaise. pansy... she's just there. oh yeah and nuna
there's also background percy x oliver, dean x seamus, lavender x parvati, and sirius x remus. would also have a shorter side story following percy and his friends which i'll talk about next
Tumblr media
mature | graphic depictions of violence | m/m | not published or written
so this story was originally made as a story to accompany a place called home, but it could (and might) be published by itself. it follows the story of a slytherin percy weasley through his years at hogwarts & during the war alongside his best friends penelope clearwater, oliver wood, and marcus flint. it would show percy's side of a place called home.
though this fic originally started as purely funny "haha percy and his friends are trying to keep harry alive at school" i honestly think it will be one of if not the darkest of these wips lol. sure there will also be violence in apch and istdaiomw but this is the only fic with super graphic descriptions of any violence bc percy... let's just say bro goes through some stuff.
the title is the name of a spell made by percy that is pretty important both in this fic and in a place called home :) i won't say what it's for but it mixes two latin words meaning show/reveal and secret.
~
so yeah, this is a basic idea of the bigger things i have in the works right now. as for things on the smaller side, i'm actively working on developing a sequel to my oneshot if you stayed as well as working on an evan pov muggle au with rosekiller & jegulus. might post more on those later :)

Hey! Was just in the midst of rereading "Lily" and I had a question about your rewriting process:
Was it hard having to replace all the "Harry Potter" elements? Are things REALLY different from "Lily" the fic, or is it just the basics? Is there still a school for magic?
The most important one, tho, is: Did you change Lily's name? I hope not lol
On another note, REALLY excited for the published book! Which actually brings another question, I looked at the word count, and I don't think you can make all of "Lily" one book, so is it gonna be a trilogy, cuz I remember once you said that there are three main arcs, or is it just gonna be a series?
Sorry about all these questions!
Feels weird answering this without having released anything to the wild yet but why not.
And no worries about the question, it's great to know people are still interested/interested at all. That fic is kind of... my ridiculous pet project gone wild that consumed my account for too many years.
Was it Hard Replacing Things?
Yes.
This was the main trouble/what took so damn long. The main story and characters (Lily and her journey and all of that) aren't really reliant on the HP framework, which why it was possible to convert at all, but it's dependent on there being known archetypes and tropes. I like to think I pull it off with a very stereotypical high fantasy setting but a lot had to change, while serving the interests of the story and characters, and also making internal sense.
That meant a lot of sitting down and thinking about the new world, how it works, and the new cast of secondary characters.
Are Things Really Different?
Yes and no.
The overarching point of the story is the same and the main characters go through the same major emotional arcs. The actual plotlines though are vastly different, the world is different, and the secondary characters are different (well, some are reminiscent of the fic but get way more speaking lines/some changes to personalities and others are new).
Basically, I had to write new content for most of it (but the beginning was sadly similar enough that we got the whole pulling down debacle that I still have to wait and see where that lands).
Some things are still the same in that there's still a prophecy, still a case of Lily having been dumped somewhere else for convenient reasons of convenience, and so on.
Is There a Magic School
Sort of.
It's Sir Not Appearing in Book One but does get quite a few name drops.
Is Lily's Name Changed?
She's still Lily and Ellie to start with but she has another name as well and the surname and middle name are different. I was too attached to Lily as a name to drop it by this point.
How Many Fucking Books Is It?
You're right in that it's a long story.
Fuck, it's a long story.
What I've got now for this to be published book is the first arc, roughly the equivalent of chapters 1-25 in the fic version for those following along (same major arc going on). In Lily I'd say while there's three major arcs it'd probably break down best into 4-5 books (though don't quote me, I'm bad at doing this stuff until I sit down to actually write it).
Once I finally get done with this editing business of book 1, book 2 is pretty well scoped out, I have a solid idea what book 3 would be, and then... could be one to two more as I have to sit down and really think about those (that's a future me problem).

The Andromeda Program on Ao3 120+k
Hermione Granger is one of the select few to join the prestigious Andromeda Program to explore space for all of humanity. She thinks it will be an excellent opportunity to prove her worth and show her mettle, but perhaps living on a spaceship and spending her time with the same group of people is not all it's cracked up to be. Hermione quite literally crashes her way back through time by roughly twenty years. There is no going back; the only way is to go forward. And when one unwittingly interferes with time, what one expects may not be what time finds...

Reccing this because once you start reading you can't stop! I don't usually read Snamione and I have no idea how I ended up here first, but I've reread it twice since! Hermione as a death eater spy's wife is amazing.
If you have any other fic recs, feel free to reblog and add them to the post!
Note that reblogs are better than replies (or likes) because reblogs help share the post around - so more people get the recs, and more people see the post and might add their own recs as well!
If you rec more than three please use a readmore under the first or so, so not to spam everyone's dash!

Can I ask your top 10 fav fics ever (from any fandom, if you don't mind)?
Also, just curious, is there a story behind your name "etaindelaserna "?
I don’t mind at all😊 These are the fics I’ll always come back to at one point or another in my life. And about my name: it’s the name of the first character I’ve ever written when I started out to become a writer. The script still exists. I’m rewriting the book to publish it one day.

I am tortured by how good this fic I wrote during lockdown and never finished is. It's a damned Harry Potter AU. With Attack on Titan character. My protagonist is painfully 14 when he starts dating an adult, and 15 when they start having sex. It's one of the most self-indulgent fic I ever wrote. It's over 90k. I never published a line of it. I spent the day reading it and it hit the nail on the head every single time. The document stops when the protagonist is called out by a friend for relapsing after being sober for a month and saying "Fuck you I can do what I want", and his friend answering "And is that what you want?"
I wrote this when I was 20 and it's very much my teenage dream given flesh. There's everything. Drama, dogs, depression, drugs, friends giving haircuts and piercings to each other, vampire boyfriend, righteous anger, angst, the world very much revolving around my protagonist, pissing on Hogwarts, my first ever OC... It's so good. It is everything it is meant to be. It's so 'problematic' and 'unrealistic' in a way that feels so so so so so so good because it manifests and magnifies everything that was fucking with my mind. I can read my gender identity crisis seeping through the lines.
I so so want to finish it and publish it and the morality of it has me in shambles. I do Not Want to interact with the HP fandom, mostly. But guys it's so good. Some teacher messes up with my protagonist? He stops talking for a full month and his catatonic state is like. Everyone's problem. It's so satisfying. There's a line in this fic that is word for word something my then boyfriend had told me that crushed my heart. The projection is on fucking point. And also it stops when my protagonist is low and I want to see him get better. I can't try and take the best parts or the essence of it to rewrite it because I wouldn't write that story today and that's what makes it perfect. I can maybe finish it but rewrite things? Impossible. Aaaaah.

you literally are a warrior cats stan why are you getting mad at potterheads for this game you hippocrate?
First off, like most longtime warrior cat fans, we loathe where the franchise has gone, what has become of the characters, so on and so forth. I personally do, and this is a discussion I have had with multiple fans, including a longtime close friend of mine.
Secondly, the better parts of the fandom acknowledge the issues with Warriors and produce content that I follow and seek out intentionally.
Thirdly, as I've stated before to you weirdos, I haven't spent a dime on a warrior cats book OR ANYTHING WARRIOR CATS since I was a VERY young teen/pre-teen. That's been nearly close to a decade if not longer.
Lastly, Warrior Cats has, as far as I know, never been anti-semitic towards my Jewish friends and loved ones.
Someone can correct me if my memory on the series is incorrect here, but never... never have I seen such a thing there. And if I did, then this series needs to be good as dust to me and others, same as the HP franchise. I would and STILL have been saying the same things about the WC franchise.
The Hunters, again, would need to be held responsible for their bullshit. The WC fandom is VERY good at holding the authors and harper collins publishing accountable for their shitty behaviour.
As someone who loves the series, who loved his old WC OCs, as someone who wouldn't be shit without this series: it needs to end + I hope it ends one day. It isn't any good. It inherently never really /was./
I moved onto greater things, and just look forward to whatever great content the fandom creates be it rewrites, MAP MVs or OC related things. I wish I could say the same for you harry potter stans but you niggas make that dumbass franchise your whole personality and refuse to let it fucking go because you don't care about anyone but your damn selves.
Warrior Cats sucks and it needs to end. I'm not afraid to admit that. You niggas can't say the same for HP like at all.
You'll go to your graves defending your right to play a horrible fascist game that isn't even GOOD or involves your fave nigga like at all and I SIMPLY cannot understand the terminal brainrot FOMO and lack of genuine personality it takes to be a shill for this franchise.
Y'all are just as annoying, insufferable, and as bad as the fucking disney adults I know.

Non-traditional family trees: the case of Futurama
Tumblr media
The Farnsworth family tree that he shows to the crew members of Planet Express in "All the Presidents' Heads"
Some time ago, Mary Koeven wrote an interesting article about family history and adoption (if it is taking a long time to load, please read the archived copy), which she defines as "when a child is raised by someone other than their parents, whether or not their last name was changed or any official adoption process was carried out in the court system," with adoptive parents being either "grandparents, aunt and uncle, other family members, or complete strangers," sometimes referred to as "guardianship or fostering rather than adoption." She also went onto say the important part is establishing a timeline of the child's life, saying that "any information you find on relationships and family events should be recorded on your family tree." The article goes onto outline how to add "adoption info in your Ancestry.com tree," specifically focusing on the Harry Potter series as an example, although looking at how this works for Family Search would also be helpful. In this post, I aim to talk about family trees in Futurama, which I briefly mentioned in a post on one of my sister blogs.
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on July 27, 2020.
After reading Koeven's post, I responded on Twitter, wondering whether the family tree in Futurama was "non-traditional," adding that "one of the protagonists is his own grandfather," referring to the Fry family. Koeven responded by remarking that "time travel would rewrite a lot of the fundamental rules of genealogy (death always comes after birth, etc.) and make research MUCH more difficult." Be that as it may, I still feel this article is one worth pursuing. Infosphere, the nerd's guide to the Futurama universe, has a very helpful family tree of the Fry family, which explains a lot:
Tumblr media
Courtesy of Infosphere.
In episode 1 of season 4 (Roswell That Ends Well), Fry and the rest of the Planet Express crew inadvertently travel back in time to 1947. In the process, he kills his own grandfather, Enos, leading to all sorts of distortions:
Fry's time travel means that Yancy, Sr's paternal grandmother is Mrs. Fry, his wife and Fry's mother. And not only did Fry become his own grandfather, he made his father his own grandfather as well. An infinite loop results: Fry is his own grandfather, great-great-grandfather, great-great-great-great-grandfather and so on. This abnormality is the reason Fry lacks the Delta Brainwave.
This disrupts the fundamental rules of genealogy and would make research more difficult. Besides the crew of the Planet Express ship, who else knew that they traveled back to 1947? Those in 1947 cannot testify to anything except that "aliens came," although those "aliens" were people from the future. Later on, in the series, during the first Futurama direct-to-DVD film, Bender's Big Score, Fry again travels back in time, creating the time-paradox duplicate of Lars Fillmore. Again, if he is a duplicate, what is his real birth date then? We can say for certain what his death date is (Dec 31, 3007) but if he has the same birth date as Fry, then doesn't this create another distortion? Some have been bothered by these distortions, saying it throws other parts of the show into question, like the DNA scanner in episode one.
Fry's family, you would think, is the only one that has this phenomenon of distortion. The Waterfall and Turanga families are free of this distortion. But what about the Farnsworth family, which ties into the Fry family? After all, Prof. Farnsworth went back to 1775 and seemed to kill his ancestor, David Farnsworth. The only way the Prof. could still be alive is because "it's possible that although David Farnsworth was a relative of the Professor, he wasn't one of his direct ancestors" as the Infosphere claims. Still, this would create another distortion, as the crew members did "alter history when they travel[led] back in time to the American Revolution," without a doubt.
You could say that makes the episode, "All the President's Heads," even more relevant to genealogy than "Roswell That Goes Well" because Prof. Farnsworth is trying to spruce up "his family tree, eager to show anyone willing to listen - and plenty who aren't - all the amazing people he's descended from," as noted in an approving review by Alasdair Wilkins in Gizmodo. However, other reviews say that in Roswell That Goes Well, Fry "climbs his family tree." Hmm.
What are your thoughts on this? Are there any family trees from other shows you'd like to share?

Re-writing Harry Potter
So I've had this project in the works for a while now and I never really posted anything on it but I've decided to change that!! So I will be posting on here about my progress on my re-write of Harry Potter.
I will still be posting about other things but this will (hopefully) be a thing I consistently post about. I will also post when the first chapter is published.
Now let's give some context to what I changed in the general story.
These ones will not contain spoilers for my re-write, future posts will but if you want to go in blind I will specify what posts are spoilers.
So here are the general things I am changing;
Lasting consequences for characters actions and events that happen. Specifically the main characters and the events they go through.
More distinct and diverse characterisation for secondary characters along with giving those characters more distinct arcs
Giving characters motivations other then "they're evil" or "they're good"
The Golden Trio has become the Golden Quartet because I have made Neville a main character
More exploration on Hogwarts houses along with some characters houses being changed
Changes to magical creatures (specifically goblins and house-elves)
Complete character rewrites, either because they didn't have a character to begin with or I think they're character was a waste of potential
Character race changes (not just with main characters but with secondary characters as well)
Name changes, both characters and magical creatures
Fixing plot holes and bringing in new plots that I think would be more interesting
More details on the schools outside of Hogwarts
That is all I can write for now as if I were to go into detail it would be a bit of a spoiler. I will be making future posts on this going into more detail. I can't wait to share the writing journey with you!!

12, 20, 24 for the fic author ask ❤️
12. Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite this year?
Yesss. My best friend has been my editor/brainstorming partner for almost 20 years, but she's not super into Harry Potter, so I've been thinking of starting to reach out to the community for beta readers and editing help. I get very shy and nervous about edits and even asking for editing help, so that will be a hard one. In school, I went through A LOT of peer editing and workshopping and no matter how much someone liked my story, the negative comments really got to me so it's going to take a lot of strength and trust, but the friends I've started making in this community already make it feel so comfortable that I think I'll get there.
The whole write the story then rewrite it thing tho, idk. I've never been able to do it. My process is more like word vomit (legit thousands of words at a time) then going back and fixing what's not working in pieces. Like in a recent fic, my editor goes "did you really want harry to be such a whiny jealous brat?" and so we reworked his and Hermione's friendship + a lot of his dialogue to get him to be a little less annoying lol
20. Any plans to work on original fiction this year?
GOD I SHOULD. I actually work in a creative storytelling sort of job so sometimes my original work is kinda sorta being published - you'd just have no idea I was behind it lol. But my friend and I have been talking about writing a tv show together so maybe that will happen.
24. By the end of this year, you want your fandom to think of you as “that author who _______.”
I honestly have no idea. I thought by the end of this year, I would be known as a dramione writer, and I veered into rare pair land so hard I can barely believe it. I never expected to write a slytherin triad fic, that's for damn sure. Never writes the same pair twice lol. Though I do want to explore more nottpott, susan x blaise, ronarry, jk I want to explore all of them I love these kids
thanks cutie for the asks - hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Imperius loyalty to the witch?
Since JKR is trending on Twitter again (it's that time of year already?) I decided to publish this essay I wrote on her and the Harry Potter universe a while ago. I was kind of gutted by how little I didn't have to rewrite for this to still be relevant and accurate...

hey, for the fic ask game, I would love to hear more about your experience in fandoms, but I'm sticking with asks 3 and 44 for now.
Thank you for the ask, @fairsquare16! Ohh, happy to answer you re: fandoms if you would like to send more asks, but feel free to message me if you'd like to talk any time! If I haven't responded to a DM in more than a day, it's not you. Please send me another ask letting me know you DM'ed me (Tumblr messenger is really wonky for me).
3. Are there any fics that inspired you to write what you do?
YES. Absolutely. Probably all the stories I have read have in one way or another inspired me, whether it was through agreement or disagreement, in helping me realize my personal characterizations on top of canon.
Without question, @annerbhp's work inspired me to write what I do. The Changeling and the Armistice series have really helped me better understand Harry and Ginny in many ways, even though I have never written a Slytherin Ginny. Annerb has such a gift for going into themes, trauma, world-building (I have never thought about who gets to wield a wand before), and limited POV.
in my head we do everything right in particular inspired the way I write smut, with the thought to writing it for a reason rather than as simply smut for the sake of smut scenes. This kind of emotional / purposeful smut made writing Unravel Me so enjoyable even though it was my first time as a smut writer.
@gryffindormischief and @fightfortherightsofhouseelves both inspired me to write Muggle AUs! It was never something I had thought about until their wonderful works.
44. Rant about something writing related.
I'll write about why I'm more an alternate universe writer than a canon writer. I once saw someone say that canon writers are seen as less imaginative as AU writers, which had never been anything that occurred to me. If anything, I find the pressure of writing canon far too great, making sure it fits exactly with what exists in the books. Even with AU, I often spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about whether this makes sense or not in the constructs of this AU.
Basically, I am too much of a perfectionist and don't have the confidence that I'll get it just right. I tip my hat to canon writers who can write pieces that do not feel like a rewrite of canon, but really add such amazing insights and perspectives to these moments we miss and the characters we love.
I really do love the liberty with AUs, imagining the characters I love in all sorts of interesting scenarios. People have asked (Mr. Naru included) me why I don't just take those ideas and write original fiction. Some have said Harry Potter without magic isn't Harry Potter.
I get where people are coming from, but my goal with AUs/fanfiction isn't to have a publishable original story. It feels disingenuous to write a story based on another author's characters and then just change the names and say this is mine. These ideas are often inspired by a love of the original work and the characters, and part of fanfiction for me is to continue to indulge and enjoy this work with others, and it's such a delight when others enjoy the same characters with me.
Philosophically, it's interesting to consider whether Harry Potter without magic is the same character, but just like I don't think his trauma defines who he is, nor do I think him happening to be able to use a wand defines who he is. But that's just my opinion. And I've always been way more interested in the characters (Ron's humor, Hermione's loyalty, Harry's reckless bravery) than the magical world.
Wow, rambled a lot. If you stayed with me all the way through that, I'd be super curious about what you think!
Feel free to ask me more Fic Writer Ask Game!

1, 2, 6, 18, and 25 from the asks list! 1/2/6 for TDJ fics and 18/25 for took talks revelations
is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?
I posted most of the snippets of things I had started and never finished. I spent a lot of time in @thedeviljudges 's dms talking about the political au where Gaon worked in Yohan's office, and also the fae one. I was really excited to possibly one day work on the fae one because there was something about it that just felt fun. We don't have enough magic in the aus for TDJ.
what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?
Almost definitely the earliest ones. I wrote my first 3 (?) TDJ fics while having only watched about half the show, I think? It took me almost six months to watch the final episode so a lot of even my early fics were written before I'd finished the show.
something you would go back and change in your writing that it’s too late/complicated to change now
I mean... I started rewriting the entirety of imagining the integration because I just didn't love how it was going.
I'm really bad at not posting the second I have something written and I feel like if I finished projects and then posted them things would go a little better. :')
were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?
Oh, god yeah. It definitely depends on fic vs fiction, genre, etc.
I mentioned in a previous ask that I almost always return to Hannibal and Harry Potter as fandoms that influenced me greatly. For a while I had thought about putting together an outright list of fics across the, like, 85 fandoms that I still read for on occasion that influenced me either in writing choices or writing style.
For published writing, the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski, Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales, Edgar Allan Poe, Tolkien, The Ranger's Apprentice Series by John Flanagan, and (coming close to doxxing myself here but) Alan Silberberg is actually a friend of mine and he himself as a person has been a major influence on my choice to go into writing professionally.
copy paste a few sentences or a paragraph that you're particularly proud of
Gonna hit you with the opening scene to the novel I've been working on because why not? (writing below the cut)
An unholy rhythm kept in line by the marching of soldiers atop the cobblestone streets of Aktas echoes through the streets is not enough to cover the tolling of the bells from the northwest side of the Courtyard. The bell call to all the promise of another death, another head removed from a so-called false prophet. Crowds whisper and gather in the Courtyard, approaching from the narrow alleys between the Worship Hall and the Mess.
One man pushes past, through the crowds, towards the city at large. His blue robes mark him a man of faith; the staff held in his hand mark him a Bav, a carrier of the magic of the gods. Even beneath the light cloth of his hood, his eyes are sharp, too sharp — odd enough that many look away upon seeing him, avoiding eye contact as best they can. Few murmur the proper greeting, “may the sun shine light on you, Bav,” and fewer still bow their heads; even in a city so filled with the faith, the people are a superstitious lot.
The Bav cuts down a quiet alley, each step confident and sure even as he scans the empty space for any person, any thing, that might whisper all the way to the Khonhey of his activities outside of the Church.
The sounds of boots atop cobblestone stops suddenly. The bells ring out one more time before silence falls and the Bav turns his head to look behind him as a roar of a crowd goes up. His pace quickens through the alleys, until he reaches a near-empty street and hurries to a dust-covered door, rapping on it sharply with his staff. “It’s me,” he says softly, his voice and tone alike soft and almost musical. The door opens and a gloved hand shoots out, pulling him inside and just as quickly shuts and locks the door behind him.
“Were you seen?” the man inside asks, glancing over his shoulder at the now-closed door.
“No. They are all focused on the commotion at the Gallows,” the Bav replies, letting out a long breath. “We need to move our plans up, Sime. He’s nearly been caught three times this week alone. I recommended caution and he doesn’t listen.”
“He’s young. Can you blame him?” Tahsim Anyis turns, picking a jug up from the table. “Drink?” He pours without waiting for a reply, extending the cup behind him to the Bav. “We’ll need a serious distraction to get him out of the city. And then we’ll both be dead men walking, you and I.”
“As if we are not already,” the Bav mutters and takes a long drink.
