Fandom Fic Rec: Throwback Edition
Tagged by @blackestglass
Choose 5 fandoms you are no longer active in (as in actively participating/creating in), and then choose 1 fic for each fandom that's stuck with you. Tag 5 people when you're done!
1. The End of the World by FernWithy and sequels (Hunger Games, Haymitch/Effie)
I don’t consider myself a Hunger Games fan. I consider myself a The End of the World by FernWithy fan, and that it incidentally happens to take place in the same universe as The Hunger Games is incidental. I came to these fics having not read anything in The Hunger Games, having only watched the first Hunger Games movie to give me any familiarity with the characters and the stories, and absolutely fell in love. FernWithy has written six full novels and three interstitial novellas clocking in at nearly a million words to tell the story of Haymitch Abernathy (and Effie Trinket) from age 16 to adulthood and they are masterful. Her worldbuilding and plotting are top notch and her ability to mimic the styles of other authors is superb. (I came to know FernWithy through her Harry Potter fanfiction, which is about as stylistically different as it is possible to be.) I come back to reread these once ever few years.
2. Yggdrasil Dreaming by Barkour (MCU, Sif/Loki)
Ah, Sif/Loki, my beloved ship of yester year. This was the fic that really got me shipping them and I never looked back. It goes so hard with the dream imagery and the mythic storyline that draws a lot from Norse myths. The characterization is absolutely top notch, and Barkour has the most gorgeous lyrical prose I’ve ever read. This provides an alternate (ie, written pre-Avengers) take on Loki’s storyline post Thor (2011) and is absolutely beautiful.
3. Cowboys and Indians by Minisinoo (Twilight, Gen Fic Jasper & Leah)
Taking a page out of Trish’s book and rec’ing a fic by Minisinoo. This is what I think of when I consider a fanfics power to be transformative. Obviously the big glaring problem (of many big glaring problems) at the center of the Twilight series is the treatment of the Quileute Tribe. This takes that premise and turns it on its head and creates a deeply poignant metaphor for the relationship between white people and Natives in the offering. Minisinoo is Native (though not Quileute) and the perspective offered in this bit of fanfic is fascinating as it explores an unlikely friendship between a former Confederate soldier turned vampire and a 21st century Native woman turned werewolf.
4. Cutting Water by NessieGG(Naruto, Neji/Tenten & Sasuke/Sakura)
This is basically a wuxia AU and... what a knockout premise for an alternate universe, frankly? This reads like a Chinese fantasy drama in all of the best ways. Technically it’s a Naruto fic, but also I don’t know that you need to know a thing about Naruto to enjoy this. This is high drama, with lots of adventure and action and factional politics with no side necessarily being completely wrong. I love the worldbuilding, and I love the two romances which both are quite distinct and interesting!
5. Baiting the Beauty by @glamaphonic (Game of Thrones/ASOIAF, Jaime/Brienne)
Technically it’s unfinished, but only by a few chapters and still absolutely worth a read. Jaime/Brienne Regency AU in the style of the Regency Romance Novel. This is pure romance novel tropes in the best ways. Brienne makes such an excellent unconventional heroine, a wallflower through and through, and Jaime absolutely fits the role of the rake. The rest is all enemies to lovers and sexual tension and uncovering one anothers hidden hurts and furtive misunderstandings. As befits George RR Martin’s reversal of the Beauty and the Beast trope, they fit the roles of hero and heroine of a romance novel perfectly, and yet they are still recognizably Jaime and Brienne.
6. Mass Effect: Discovery by @pigeontheoneandonly (Mass Effect, Shepard/Kaidan Alenko)
Bonus sixth rec because while I still consider myself in the Mass Effect fandom this fic rearranged my entire brain and I still think about it constantly since I read it. This is a narrative retelling of Mass Effect 1 (with a WIP sequel telling the story of Mass Effect 2) with Shepard/Kaidan as the main pairing. And the characterizations in this are absolutely fantastic. There is a tendency in Mass Effect fanfic to idealize Commander Shepard a bit (owing both to the game idealizing them and their placement as player proxy) that this fic elides. Nathaly Shepard is a fully formed and deeply flawed character from moment one, and Pigeon manages that neat writerly trick of making all of Shepard’s flaws her strongest traits as well. That same level of incisive characterization is applied to everyone else, all woven together with some of the most interesting and tense action scenes I’ve read.
Tagging
@rogueimperator @blindvogel @siderealsandman @wheremermaidsdwell @deliriumsdelight7 and honestly anyone else who wants to do this give me fanfic recs.

WPL Final: In-form DC look to win maiden WPL title after falling short last year
Tumblr media
In-form Delhi Capitals, led by the inspirational Meg Lanning, would hope to be second time lucky and lift their maiden Women's Premier League title when they take on a plucky Royal Challengers Bangalore in the summit clash here on Sunday.
After missing out on the title in WPL's inaugural edition last year, losing by seven wickets to Mumbai Indians in the final, DC looked a rejuvenated side this year.
DC have been in superb form this year, topping the five-team league standings with 12 points from eight matches.
Lanning has led DC from the front, scoring 308 runs from eight innings, while South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and Australian left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen are the highest wicket-takers for the side with 11 scalps each.
DC's only two defeats this season came against Mumbai Indians UP Warriorz. Leaving aside those two matches, they have enjoyed a near-perfect campaign.
Going into the final, they will definitely start as favourites, having never lost to RCB in four meetings.
But having said that, past results will hardly have any significance in the final. It will be a new day and the the side which can withstand pressure and expectations will lift the title.
DC will expect the explosive Shafali Verma to provide them with a quick start alongside Lanning.
Jemimah Rodrigues has been in fine nick in the middle, but Lanning would expect more contributions from the likes of all-rounders Alice Capsey and Kapp.
On the bowling front, Jonassen has been the star performer but the likes of Kapp and Shikha Pandey too have contributed.
Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav has also been effective with 10 wickets and the home team will definitely depend a lot on its spinners in a relatively slow Kotla pitch.
RCB, on the other hand, finished third in the league phase after an inconsistent run that yielded eight points from as many games but they clicked when it mattered, knocking out defending champions MI by five runs in the eliminator here on Friday.
All-rounder Ellyse Perry will be key to RCB's success on Sunday as besides being the highest run-getter with 312 runs, the Australian has been impressive with the ball, scalping seven wickets.
If not for Perry's all-round show against MI on Friday, the result could have been different. She first played a vital 50-ball 66-run knock and then returned with figures of 1/29 to play a key role in RCB's journey to the final.
But Perry would look for more support from the likes of skipper Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, Richa Ghosh and Sophie Molineux with the bat.
However if RCB were to stop DC, they would need efforts from their bowlers, especially the likes of Renuka Singh, Shreyanka Patil, Georgia Wareham etc.
All in all it promises to be a cracker of a contest with the balance slightly tilted towards hosts DC.
Teams (from):
Delhi Capitals: Taniya Bhatia (wk), Laura Harris, Meg Lanning (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey, Annabel Sutherland, Jess Jonassen, Minnu Mani, Poonam Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Titas Sadhu, Radha Yadav, Ashwani Kumari, Aparna Mondal, V Sneha Deepthi.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Richa Ghosh (wk), Disha Kasat, Smriti Mandhana (c), Sabbhineni Meghana, Indrani Roy, Satheesh Shubha, Heather Knight, Simran Bahadur, Nadine de Klerk, Sophie Devine, Shreyanka Patil, Ellyse Perry, Asha Sobhana, Ekta Bisht, Kate Cross, Sophie Molineux, Shradda Pokharkar, Renuka Singh, Georgia Wareham.

Deepak Hooda happy for 'childhood friend' Sanju Samson as duo register highest partnership for India
Tumblr media
Jun 29, 2022 10:06 IST Dublin , June 29 (Always First): Deepak Hooda played a spectacular knock of 104 runs as India managed to defeat Ireland by just four runs in the second match and clinch the two-match T20I series 2-0 on Tuesday. For the visitors, it was the 176-run partnership between Hooda and Sanju Samson that guided their team to a total of 225 runs. At the post-match presentation ceremony, Hooda, adjudged as the Player of the Match and the Series, expressed great delight to see his childhood friend Sanju doing well. "Sanju is a childhood friend, we played U-19 together, I am happy for him as well. Ireland is very good, I enjoyed it a lot. Fans are superb here, I never feel like playing outside India. Yeah, the wicket is different, thanks to all the fans for the support," said Hooda. The right-hander smashed 104 off 57 deliveries to become only the fourth Indian to hit a T20 International century. His knock was decorated with nine fours and six hits over the fence. "I am coming from a good IPL, I was trying to follow up the same performance here as well. I like playing aggressively. Batting up the order, I have the time, I try to play according to the situation," he added. Talking about the match, top knocks from captain Andrew Balbirnie (60), Paul Stirling (40) and Harry Tector (39) went in vain as India snatched the match from Ireland in the last over, winning the last-ball thriller by four runs. With this, India have won the series 2-0. Ireland though will walk away with a lot of positives as they were in the match till the very last ball and gave India a scare with their batting. Flamey’s Best of 2021
I have no idea how, but it’s that time of the year again!  I added a new category as well called “Best games played in 2021″... which isn’t many, considering I did not play a lot of new ones.
Best movies watched in 2021:
1) Spider-Man: No Way Home.  An emotional rollercoaster and nostalgia-trip of a film but boy... blew me away!  Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man films will always be my favorites, but this one definitely did our favorite web-slinger some justice.
Tumblr media
2) Train to Busan 3) Patch Adams 4) Godzilla vs. Kong 5) Kung Fu Panda
Best shows watched in 2021:
1) Squid Game.  This was an unexpected favorite.  Every episode had me on the edge of my seat and the acting was superb!  I’m curious to what they plan on doing with season 2.
Tumblr media
2) Jujutsu Kaisen (season 1) 3) Narcos (seasons 1-3) 4) Death Note 5) Midnight Mass
Best video games played in 2021:
1) Hades.  I died SO MANY times playing this game, but surprisingly, I didn’t get mad.  Each death was a learning experience and a chance to try a new strategy.  The characters and dialogue were extremely colorful.  For someone who doesn’t usually play rogue-like games, Hades was very enjoyable.
Tumblr media
2) Resident Evil: Village 3) Pokemon: Shining Pearl
Best books read in 2021:
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
The Chain by Adrian McKinty
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
The Seven Sisters (Book 1) by Lucinda Riley
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

PEAS OUT OF A POD!
“Harry’s mouth fell open. The dishes in front of him were now filled with food. He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup and, for some strange reason, mint humbugs.”
- HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE
Hello, fellow pickles,
Whenever I think of cooking meals, my mind quickly goes to this scene. How I wish I were at Hogwarts. The dishes appear out of nowhere, I keep eating till I am full, the leftovers disappear and there are no dishes to be done. Aah! Heaven..! Then I go to my kitchen, try to swish and flick my knife, but nothing appears. WHY AM I NOT A WITCH?
After some daydreaming, I come back to this boring muggle world. Eventually, I have to have a meal plan. In the last winters, I found something which was close to having food out of nowhere on your plate. Haa! PEAS! MATARR!
Tumblr media
Now, I know you would say I am crazy because who on earth would take the peas out of their pods when we are already scraping the bottom of the barrel of motivation to cook. Here is the catch. FROZEN PEAS! They have literally been the lifeguard of my sinking-homemade dinner plans.
You know, when I was little, my mother used to scare me off with the green worms curled inside the pods for the obvious Indian-middle-class reasons, “agar padhogi nahi to keede se kahenge tumhe kaat le?” Well, I was not a fan of those green worms, so, apparently, I used to run in another direction.
When I think of winters, one of the first things that come to my mind is my mother and other ladies of my neighbourhood collecting peas in their spare time under mild sunlight. They used to exchange their worries, good news, anticipations, judgments, and sometimes cooking advice over this activity. Strange, right? A simple plant, once loved by Mendell, can spark a fire of conversations on any mundane day.
Interestingly, they say that proper etiquette for eating peas is to squash them on the back of the fork and then eat them. All I have learned is first you steal some peas, a handful if you are lucky, right under your mother’s nose and run as fast as you can away from her while throwing them in your mouth. In 1984, Janet Harris broke a Guinness World Record by consuming 7175 peas in 60 minutes using chopsticks. What a waste of time! We Indians take a pod, peel it, eat the peas between two blinks right in front of the vendor without his knowledge. We love PISUM SATIVUM.
Tumblr media
Had it not been for peas, I wonder what would have been the topic of conversation among the guests in a vegetarian wedding over a buffet. Shockingly, before the 1600s, the French thought it was madness to eat peas green. How times change! Good in Vitamin A, C, B1, Iron, Phosphorus, Folate, and protein, what would have been saving my life in the kitchen in 2°C? I guess this is the reason why England has varieties named Early Superb and Little Marvel. We too have Jawahar Matar, Jawahar Pea, Mithi Phali, Hissar Harit, etc. *
As for me, I love peas, not the worms, but little green pearls. In the peak winters, we have the sweetest variety. When you cook it, a sweet smell rises from the pot and fills the room. This is basically any winter night aroma of my kitchen. I wonder, does humanity too have a season like this, the season which brings the peak of ethics, morality, beauty, conscience, and strength in us at a certain time of the year? If it comes, does it come for each individual at a different time? Or does a community have it together? Or a nation has it together? I would love to find my that time of the year.
In the meantime, we can enjoy the plant's sweetness. What I do is:
Take a dollop of ghee (remember?)
Heat it and lower the flame
Add cumin seeds, let them dance in the hot ghee. Then, add a pinch of asafetida.
Add slit green chilies (as per your tolerance to heat)
Add the peas. Mix them. Add salt to taste.
You can also add turmeric but I like to go green.
Sauté the mix. Let it fry till the peas start to shrivel. Keep turning it over so the peas don’t burn otherwise your friends will never let you forget that you had black peas on your plate. 😁
Add some Garam Masala, my favorite ingredient. If you want you can also add some chopped coriander.
TADAA! Your recipe is done! It is THIS SIMPLE.
Tumblr media
What I learned from this dish is sometimes we need to take the simple route in an otherwise complicated life. We don’t need to create a mess for ourselves just because we have big goals. Be in physical, philosophical, intellectual, or spiritual growth, such small and simple steps help us become a much better version of ourselves. These steps keep us afloat, not those complex ones that might look like they are helping but, in reality, they actually are pushing the boat an inch deeper into the river.
I know, this recipe is exactly not bringing food on your plate out of nowhere. But if we look closely, this does make us a better Muggle if not a Wizard. And that’s what counts in every world. Doesn’t it?

Black Powder: Bloody Frontier Adventure #1
Tumblr media
Black Powder: Bloody Frontier Adventure #1 Asylum Press 2011 By Dwayne Harris Lettered by Bernie Lee Robert Young, an ex-captain in the Barbary Wars, journeys up the Mississippi river on America's first steamboat to rescue the woman he loves from a gang of river pirates led by his cutthroat former commander. Along the way he encounters hostile Indians, swashbuckling battles, and several historical figures, all set against the backdrop of the catastrophic New Madrid earthquake of 1812 that reversed the flow of the Mississippi river. Well I was contacted by Asylum Press for another reason and I asked for some books to review because i’ve never read anything from them.  I’ve been missing out apparently and I had no idea that their books were this high quality, well okay I didn’t really know they existed to be fair.  So when the books came and I saw the cover to this I knew I had to read it.  I’m a sucker for historical fiction and more so when that fiction takes place during actual events so that we see the Ohio River and the Mississippi River being the main focus here at a time when this was still considered a lawless land, in 1812 the Mississippi marked the end of the United States everything west of it was either Spanish, Mexican or untamed so yeah it’s a fun period to set a book in that location. I like the way that this is being told.  How we see the angles and perspective in the panels along with how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  There is a really great way that we’re introduced to the characters and this world and that we’re kind of dropped off smack dab in the middle of things which allows the reader to become more engaged in the story by making them think of the scenario and how this may have gotten underway.  The character development is super and as we see the characters act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter it does a wonderful job of fleshing them out.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing this world, the story and introducing the characters it’s easy to get lost in what we see. How the book is structured and how we see the layers within the story emerging and starting to play out is well conceived and achieved.  How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as move the story ever forward is delightfully rendered. The interiors here are incredible.  I didn’t realise you could this on the computer at such a level back then, listen to me 2011 is back then.  The work is frakkin amazing and the level and quality of linework that we see creating the attention to detail is beyond anything you could hope for.  Backgrounds are utilised as needed and the pin-up page that shows Pittsburgh is one of those take your breath away moments you’ll never forget.  The composition within the panels bring us this great depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkable eye for storytelling.  The colour work is brilliantly rendered as well.  How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is incredibly well laid down.  The creativity and imagination we see throughout and how the characters are brought to life with such realness is startling and impeccably done. I am uber impressed with this book and it makes me excited to read the rest of the story.  That I have also found a new publishing house that is this impressive with what they release is sensational to see.  So get ready to sail the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers for some romance, epic fighting and a bit piracy that will bring you to a time you hadn't really thought about.

People operating within the field of psychological state tell the United States of America concerning. The books that affected a chord with them.
Several consultants from the psychological state field can tell you awareness. And data is essential to learning concerning psychological state be it your own or to assist somebody else. Typically notwithstanding we all know the factual details, the key lies in learning the nuances. And what alternative approach than to scan a lot of books.
Books area units usually the most effective approach. Within which we have a tendency to learn a lot of concerning ourselves. And also the world around United States of America. Thus this World psychological state Day.
We have a tendency to reached intent on consultants to crowdsource. An inventory of books to assist the United States of America to learn a lot of, and acquire. A peek into alternative people’s experiences and journeys.
As a result of typically, reading concerning alternative people’s experiences is cathartic. These books affect the spread of topics just like the therapeutic area. A person’s relationship to their diagnosing of cancer, people’s emotional struggle, and far a lot of.
More than something, these books speak of vulnerability may be a key to our journey towards healing.
Here’s what they suggested:

— Rhea Gandhi, clinical {psychologist, therapist, healer} and counselor
2. It’s Not Okay to Feel Blue Sacred Folks Open Up Concerning Their Psychological State By Scarlett Botanist
There is one thing thus powerful concerning seeing yourself mirrored back. On the pages, you’re reading, and once that reflection is of pain, sadness, discomfort. It’s even a lot of this once reading this book late last year.
The things and also the contexts of the authors were terribly totally different from mine. But the pain, the overwhelming emotions, the struggles, the journey to healing were all reflective. Of my very own journey back to Pine Tree State.
I favorite this assortment of stories such a lot I needed. To share my expertise of pain being seen that I talented this book, not once, but thrice.

3. Lost Connections By Johann Hari
This book speaks of the 9 social group and environmental causes that result in depression and anxiety. Since we have a tendency to area unit getting down to discuss psychological state. In our country a lot of seriously, it’s necessary to speak concerning the general causes of a similar.
Inequality, instability (political/economic), and economic condition area unit huge reasons for psychological state problems. And that they are available in the approach of obtaining care still. Hari himself takes medication and says that it’s useful.
However, the image is incomplete. While not talking of alternative factors like abuse, job loss, lack of that means then on. I believe the straight forward language extremely helps. After you get diagnosed, you’re feeling one thing is wrong with you if you’ll not cope.
This book helps you to challenge that concept. It causes you to feel that you just exist during a sure context, and not during a vacuum. Which things happening around you, and to you, area unit imagined having an effect on you. The less blaming stance of this approach makes individual and collective solutions potential.
— Sadaf Vidha, therapist
4. When Breath Becomes Air By Paul Kalanithi
Paul, an operating surgeon, when having finished hard coaching and residency, reached. At the top of his medical career at the age of thirty-five, is diagnosed.
With stage-4 carcinoma, It’s within the face of death. That we actually learn to measure. This book takes the United States of America through the life journey of a rare individual.
I love this book for 2 reasons, on top of several others. It’s one of all the foremost rare and humane writings that we’ve got received. It’s raw, real, human, moving, and grievous all at a similar time. It extremely causes you to replicate in your life.
And still, what will it mean to measure within the face of death. It holds and contains the readers and conjointly challenges them to deeply investigate. However, we elect to pay for our living days.
The second reason why this book is thus near to my heart is that it’s a bit of someone’s life. It’s their story, their journey, and also the folks they meet thereon journey. It’s a narrative that actually attracts on the humanity of each the Doctors and also the patients.
The book humanizes a relationship that’s bedded, complex, and especially supported.
Love, trust, respect, temperament, and readiness to figure with one another. As a therapist that holds a nice price to Pine Tree State.
When there’s no place for the surgical knife. The words area unit the surgeon’s sole tool want. We’d like words to survive and that we need words to measure through and live by. This narrative, provides the United States of America with these words, words that keep the United States of America moving.
— Shaina Vasundhara Bhatia, clinical {psychologist, therapist, healer} and subject matter psychologist
In the times of uncertainty, we’re living in. Wherever we’re faced with the truth of death all around. The United States of America, reading Paul Kalanithi will solely be thought. About a present. after I scan this book back in 2016, not solely. Did I notice his writing poetic and virtually lyrical, I found myself puzzling over what it meant to be alive.
— Bhairavi Prakash, scientist
5. Dark Circles By Udhyan Mukherjee
As a psychological state skilled, this book. To me was one of the foremost honest and raw portrayals of the psychological state in an Indian context. The author doesn’t retreat from unpacking difficult family dynamics and genetic trauma.
Each of that area unit key parts for a psychological state. This will be a dark narrative with unfussy prose that allows the plot and thus the characters to shine. Enjoy, the protagonist, is complicated and really relatable. His voice stays with you long once you’ve finished the book. The author faucets into a psychological state.
While not creating it focus however maintains its connection and doesn’t over-simplify or complicate it. Therefore creating it a practical portrayal. This book might be a pleasant browse to browse once you area unit. Within the mood for one thing dark and raw.

Thus, creating this book not solely a superb browse however a choice to act. The book is full of humor, knowledge, and honesty. It’s superb because of gain a much better understanding of the psychological state and what speak medical care seems like.
The author keeps the prose easy and thus the numerous characters keep the reader engaged and invested until the tip. This book is AN “every mood” reasonably browse that’s why I extremely suggest it.
— Tanya Vasunia, scientist
7. Daring Greatly: However, The Spirit to Be Vulnerable Transforms By Brené Brown
Imagine an area full of young budding psychologists sitting during a very circle. And discussing their most vulnerable life moments. That’s however I want to be 1st introduced to Daring Greatly. A book that aimed to seem at vulnerability and spirit. To be seen because of an equivalent aspect of the coin.
Brown uses twelve years of study and personal life anecdotes to introduce. The reader to ideas of shame, vulnerability, and thus the insufficiency mind-set. She challenges the notion of vulnerability as a ‘dirty’ feeling and takes a troublesome check out. What makes the US afraid to be vulnerable in our lives as folks, teachers, colleagues, and partners.
Vulnerability is a risk, emotional exposure, and uncertainty. It’s conjointly sincere gaga and authentic living. per Brown, vulnerability seems like truth and seems like spirit. Truth and spirit aren’t continuously snug, however, they’re ne’er weakness.
Whenever unsure or afraid, I cue myself of her mantra. That spirit means to contact and permitting myself to be seen. And this temperament to point up makes the US ever braver whenever.
Brown’s quick-witted humor, a healthy dose of harry potter references, John Gottman and Rubin’s happiness project- This book extremely has it all!

The moment Harry pulled up in front of Wardrobe, she (Marlene Dietrich) jumped out, sprinted up the stairs, burst into Banton's off-limits office, crying, "FEATHERS! Travis—feathers! What do you think? . . . Black feathers! Now, what bird has black feathers that will photograph?" As the word has the same sound in German, I figured we were about to look for the adornment of exotic black birds. They lay in big square boxes, big long boxes, big deep boxes, big flat boxes. I didn't know there were so many black-feathered birds in the whole world! Some curled, some rippled, some spiked, some swooped, some quivered, some dripped, some floated, some just lay there—black, ominous, and junglelike. My mother walked among the containers, cupping, dipping her hands into the contents, letting this bounty waft between her fingers, testing weight, shape, color, and ability to refract the intense light streaming down from the ceiling of the big fitting room. Ostrich?. . . too thick, but stripped, not bad for . . . maybe a negligee in another scene? Egret? . . . Too difficult to shape, but some was ordered in white to put on a hat later in the film when they might need a little relief from the too-black look. . . . Bird of paradise? Dyed badly. . . . Heron? Too thin and wispy. . . . Black swan? Too lightweight and dull. . . . Crow? Too stiff. Eagle? Too wide, and anyway impossible except for Indian films. Marabou? Too fluffy. Close at her heels, Travis Banton kept asking his assistant where the latest shipment from the Amazon jungle was. Suddenly he stopped, pivoted on his heels: "Charlie! Get me fighting cocks—the tail feathers from real Mexican fighting cocks! And if their condition isn't iridescent enough, we can give them a green wash!" The cocks who finally sacrificed their plumage for the famous look of Shanghai Express must have been in superb condition, for when the feathers arrived, their black-green iridescence was so intense it shimmered through the tissue paper they were wrapped in. My mother was pleased—kissed Travis on both cheeks, called to me in my assigned corner: "Sweetheart, come! Look! A Dream! Black, with its own light! Narrow, naturally curved! Now, Travis can design the first costume, that will be THE look of the film." He did and it was. Tumblr media Tumblr media
stumps on day three - india fifty four-5 (lead by way of 346) jonathan howcroft
all sport is abnormal on some degree, however cricket is greater odd than maximum, a truth borne out all through an amazing day’s play in melbourne. Following  days of ponderous action on a dull surface the boxing day take a look at exploded into existence with 15 wickets falling in three madcap classes. Jasprit bumrah become the superstar of the primary , obliterating australia’s first innings with figures of 6/33. Inside that there had been multiple sizzling deliveries (if you haven’t seen his slower ball to shaun marsh yet you must rectify that immediately) but within the main he profited from some other show of terrible nice australian batting. No person in a green helmet passed 22 regardless of little considerable difference within the pitch. A lead of 289 runs turned into no longer sufficient to persuade virat kohli to implement the follow on early in the very last session, and at 28-0 in india’s 2nd innings his side have been gambolling away with out a care within the world. However then out of nowhere five wickets fell in a flash, 4 to pat cummins, three of them catches behind square on the leg-facet, two of them - che pujara and kohli - in near equal style within the identical over. It became chaotic and compelling. Even as this useless cat jump lifted spirits in bay 13 it's far not going to have any impact on the overall result. India will be bowled out or declare sooner or later day after today, leaving them at least a day to take ten australian wickets, or locate themselves at the receiving quit of a file run-chase, which seems not likely given the proof of nowadays. Discover what occurs right here with adam, geoff and that i. Till then, thank you on your organization. Jasprit bumrah and virat kohli have fun india’s strong position inside the boxing day check. “hello jonathan,” hello gopal sankaranarayanan. “i find it splendid for kohli to pick to bat once more whilst even ponting said it'd be hard to get 20 aussie wickets and win the match after india’s slow batting rate. , it would had been ideal to take the new ball and get a few wickets via near of play. Plus, an innings defeat would have a demoralising effect at the hosts. If australia pull off an not likely win after this, kohli will have to hand in his captaincy. I gravely doubt dhoni might have executed this.”

12. 47am est00:forty seven
12th over: india 28-zero (vihari thirteen, agarwal 15) ooh, agarwal receives away with one, scooping an unsightly slog just over short midwicket regardless of aiming to ship the ball wristily through the covers. Lyon australia’s maximum dangerous bowler so far. 12. 44am est00:44
eleventh over: india 26-0 (vihari 12, agarwal 14) the mcg has completed a excellent process of ridding the area of seagulls (specially compared to aami park over the road which is infested with the aid of the blighters on a nightly basis) but one interrupts complaints at some stage in pat cummins’ first over of the innings. Yeah, we’ve reached that factor inside the match in which avian hobby is more exciting than the cricket. India lead by using 318 with ten second wickets in hand. 12. 39am est00:39
Tumblr media
10th over: india 24-zero (vihari eleven, agarwal 13) every other unremarkable hazlewood over sees the rating develop by way of one run. 17 overs left today, eighty mins final wherein to bowl them. Olly, an england fan, is licking his lips at australia’s travails on the mcg. “at the same time as numerous us are off work for some days can we release some sort of collective attempt to invent a time device in order that we are able to pass back (or is it ahead) and play the ashes now rather than remaining 12 months. India are top, top magnificence however playing this bunch of regular aussies i suppose we'd keep away from a whitewash.” i do enjoy how splendidly english the optimism is - heading off a whitewash being the summit of ambition. 12. 35am est00:35
ninth over: india 23-zero (vihari 10, agarwal thirteen) lyon’s promising opening over did not go disregarded through agarwal who welcomes the australian spinner’s 2d effort by means of lofting a force over mid-on for 4. The sector is at once shuffled to a greater protecting formation and agarwal lifeless bats the remainder of the over. 12. 31am est00:31
Tumblr media
8th over: india 19-zero (vihari 10, agarwal 9) hazlewood has tightened his line from outdoor off to stump-to-stump. It’s a miles more productive method, mainly with the abnormal one keeping low and forcing anxious protecting jabs. 12. 27am est00:27
seventh over: india 19-0 (vihari 10, agarwal nine) lyon is invited to discover how stiff his bowling action is following his workload of previous days, and he responds superbly, finding prodigious leap and no little flip, befuddling each openers in a promising over. 12. 24am est00:24
sixth over: india 18-0 (vihari nine, agarwal 9) simply the single from a recurring hazlewood over.

“jonathan,” sure, paul blundell? “a) could we simply drop alyssa healy and meg lanning within the top order and notice how we cross? B) why is all and sundry abruptly obsessed with the aid of maxwell? Will we simply want every other shaun marsh to hate?”. On factor a, i wouldn’t endorse that approach, but i might suggest as a state all and sundry focussing more attention at the girls’s sport so that the mood of depression is rebalanced. The wbbl that’s on right now, for example, has been tremendous to look at. The latest women’s global t20 became fantastic. As for b, talking handiest for myself, i think maxwell has a expertise ceiling better than most of his friends and while he’s been given the possibility to recognition on red ball cricket within the past he has delivered. Given guide and a clean role i think he could be a successful take a look at cricketer. Unluckily his cost in white ball cricket has continually disrupted his first-class recreation, an impediment genuinely now not helped by being messed around with the aid of a sequence of selectors and coaches. 12. 19am est00:19
Tumblr media
fifth over: india 17-zero (vihari eight, agarwal nine) starc does hit his straps at the least once this over, testing agarwal with a tidy bouncer. Round that the information isn’t so good. Vihari nudging three off his hip, agarwal four off his pads. 12. 15am est00:15
Tumblr media
4th over: india 10-zero (vihari 5, agarwal 5) no alarms but for india with each openers searching confident at the crease and australia struggling to put the ball in the right areas constantly. That is a dispiriting little session for the aussie quicks. 12. 11am est00:eleven
Tumblr media
third over: india 8-0 (vihari four, agarwal four) starc shifts across the wicket and is straight away extra threatening angling the ball into vihari’s frame. Maiden over. 12. 07am est00:07
Tumblr media
second over: india 8-0 (vihari 4, agarwal 4) hazlewood’s radar is likewise skewiff in his beginning over and he also is going for 4, this one much a greater appealing attempt with agarwal striding to fulfill the pitch of the ball and lightly stroking an elegant boundary through greater cover. I without a doubt hope now not.

London/Harry Potter Studio Tour - April 18th, 2016.
Another reason for my stop in London was to visit my friend Victoria who is pursuing her Master’s at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also part of the University of London. After making a quick stop to visit Sherlock Holmes at 221B Baker Street while visiting the University of Westminster campus, I met up with Victoria for lunch at Dishoom in Covent Garden. Dishoom is one of the most popular restaurants in London serving amazing Indian dishes (plus unlimited chai!). They have several locations in North London, but prepared no matter which one you go to to wait for a while to get a table. Luckily we beat the lunch rush and didn’t have to wait, but by the time we left there was a line up out the door.

221B Baker Street.
Next we made our way to the train station to make our way to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour. We opted to make our own way to the studio, rather than buying a package that included transportation as it was much cheaper. This was pretty simple – we caught the train from Euston station to Watford Junction, and then took the clearly marked bus to the studio tour. It is necessary to pre-book your entrance time a bit in advance as the tour does fill up. You can also pre-book an audioguide and keepsake guidebook.
Having been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the travelling Harry Potter exhibition (twice), the Harry Potter walking tour in Edinburgh, and visiting a few places in Oxford where the films were made, I was VERY excited to finally see this major Harry Potter attraction. If you can’t tell, I’m a big fan haha. The first part of the tour was guided as we went through the Great Hall, but after this it was all at our own pace. The audio guide was superb, giving enough detail that you could spend days here listening to everything. I had read that you only needed 2-3 hours there, but I would say if you’re a big fan, you could easily spend more than that depending on how much detail you are interested in hearing. There’s also a few different photo-ops, such as riding a broom with a green-screen background and riding in Arthur Weasley’s enchanted car. Though they were a bit pricey, Victoria and I shelled out and bought some of our pictures.

After a magical afternoon, Victoria and I headed back to London to meet up with my friends Tommie and Gary (who I met in Scotland in 2015) for drinks. It was great to catch up with them over 2-4-1 cocktails at Las Iguanas on South Bank.

Pogue Collections Sells $15.3 Million
Against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and negative indicators, rare coins continued to shine at the Stack’s Bowers Galleries March 2020 Auction in California. Nearly three years after Part V of the D. Brent Pogue Collection hit the market, the most valuable coin collection ever sold cemented its grip on the record books with more than $15 million in additional sales. To date, the Pogue Collection has realized $122,012,480 for the coins and $131,298,560 total, including the paper money collection sold on March 19. Originally scheduled to be held in Baltimore, the auction was moved to the Stack’s Bowers Galleries headquarters in Santa Ana following the cancellation of all public events in the state of Maryland. With most bidders participating online, the 420 lots realized 104 percent of their pre-sale high estimates, which were determined well before recent economic difficulties. (All prices include the buyer’s fee.)
While the Pogue Collection is renowned for its pre-1834 coins and legendary rarities, the Pogue VII sale featured collections that showed the remarkable breadth and depth of the Pogue holdings. While red-letter issues like the Berg-Garrett 1804 dollar and the finest known 1854-S half eagle reached seven-figure heights, the superbly preserved and spectacularly toned Pogue Washington quarter set also performed well. Barber quarters reached dizzying heights, and even Eisenhower and Susan B. Anthony dollars achieved exceptional prices. Collectors also competed over the Pogue “lowball” set, with the world’s worst examples of some types bringing multiples of what well-preserved examples regularly bring.
The two leading lots were among the most famous rarities in the entire realm of United States coinage. Leading all sales was the finest known example of the legendary 1854-S half eagle, the first $5 gold coin struck in the San Francisco Mint. Pedigreed to the Eliasberg Collection, the PCGS AU-58+ Pogue coin is the best example of the three confirmed to still exist. It realized $1.92 million after 38 years off the market. An example of the “King of American Coins,” the Berg-Garrett Class III 1804 dollar, brought $1.44 million. It was graded PF-55 by PCGS.
Leading Stack’s Bowers Galleries March auction was an 1854-S half eagle. After 38 years of being off the market, it surged back into the spotlight with a $1.92 million price tag. (All images courtesy Stack’s Bowers Galleries.)
The “King of American Coins,” a Prf-55 example of the 1804 dollar was the second highest-earning lot. It hammered at $1.44 million.
At $408,000, the famous “Little Princess” 1841 Proof quarter eagle from the Pogue Collection set a new world record for the type. Pedigreed to the Eliasberg and Bass collections, the Pogue specimen is graded PF-64 CAM by PCGS and is considered the finest in private hands.
A new world record was set for the “Little Princess,” an 1841 proof quarter eagle, when it crossed the block at $408,000.
Also setting a new world record, the finest known example of the key date 1878-S half dollar brought $288,000. Graded PF-66 (PCGS-CAC), its long provenance includes several Stack’s and Bowers and Merena auctions dating back to 1961, led by such legendary names as R.E. Cox (1962), Fairfield (1977), Robison (1982), and Quellar (2002).
Another record-setter: key date 1878-S half dollar in finest known condition. It brought $288,000.
Another world record was set by the finest known 1854-S quarter eagle, formerly in the F.C.C. Boyd and Harry W. Bass, Jr. collections. Graded AU-50 by PCGS, the low-mintage rarity brought $384,000, surpassing a 15-year old record for the date.
Among other lots, a PCGS MS-66 RB example of the key date 1796 With Pole half cent brought $336,000. A Gem Proof 1833 dime rarity with a provenance to the 1890 Cleneay sale, graded PF-66 by PCGS, brought $108,000, far surpassing pre-sale estimates. Despite being plentiful in low grades, the finest certified 1853 Arrows and Rays quarter graded MS-67 by PCGS took a final price of $72,000, more than 50 percent higher than initial estimates. The Eliasberg-Pogue 1907-S quarter, graded PCGS MS-68, blew by its $20,000-25,000 estimate, selling for a record $72,000. Two seated dollars brought six-figure sums, including the 1863 in PCGS MS-67 at $108,000 and the 1866 in MS-66+ at $132,000.
A 1796 With Pole half cent, graded MS-66 RB, commanded $336,000
Leaving its pre-sale estimates in the dust, a proof 1833 dime hammered at $108,000.
Highlights among gold coins included the superb 1855 Type II gold dollar, perhaps the finest of the short-lived design type at MS-67+, which sold for $120,000. A Type II gold dollar dated 1854, graded PCGS MS-66+, far surpassed expectations at $87,000. The 1879 Flowing Hair Stella $4, graded PF-66 CAM by PCGS, brought $264,000. A pair of 1820 half eagles, each graded PCGS MS-65+, yielded $174,000 and $180,000. The stunning Norweb-Bass-Pogue 1845-D half eagle in PCGS MS-65, the finest known survivor of the issue, far surpassed estimates at $96,000. The finest surviving 1911-S half eagle, acquired by John Jay Pittman at the legendary 1954 King Farouk sale, was graded MS-66 by PCGS and brought a very strong $90,000. A pair of Liberty Head eagles each passed the $200,000 barrier: an 1848-O in PCGS MS-66 ($240,000) and an 1852 in PCGS MS-66+ ($288,000). A 1907 Indian $10, Wire Rim, Periods, brought $240,000 in PCGS MS-67, while a Rounded Rim, Periods example of the date in the same grade brought $576,000. A Gem PCGS MS-68 1908-D Indian $10, the Clapp-Eliasberg coin, brought $204,000.
Superb Gem double eagles starred among later lots. A pair of MCMVII (1907) High Relief $20s each soared to six-figure results: a Wire Rim graded MS-67+ by PCGS at $222,000 and a Flat Rim in PCGS MS-68+ at $456,000. Liberty Head double eagle highlights began with San Francisco Mint issues: an 1854-S in MS-65 (PCGS) brought $132,000 and an 1857-S from the SS Central America in MS-67 (PCGS) sold for $96,000. An 1875-S $20 graded MS-67 by PCGS, considered the single finest known Type II Liberty double eagle, brought $432,000. A Gem 1869 $20, MS-66 (PCGS), sold for $204,000. The finest graded 1909/8 Saint-Gaudens $20, MS-66+ (PCGS), sold well at $108,000, while the Morse-Duckor-Pogue 1927-S Saint-Gaudens $20, the single finest graded by PCGS at MS-67, brought $264,000. The Panama-Pacific $50s surpassed estimates. Both the octagonal (at $138,000) and the round (at $192,000) were graded MS-65 by PCGS.
The PF-65 (PCGS) 1879 Schoolgirl dollar, Judd-1608, led all patterns at $144,000. A Morgan pattern 1877 half dollar, Judd-1520, realized $96,000 in PF-65 (PCGS) and a Judd-1698 “Shield Earring” quarter dollar pattern of 1882, graded PF-65+ (PCGS), brought $78,000. A modern pattern, the Specimen-67+ (PCGS) 1964 Kennedy half dollar with SMS finish, was bid to $60,000.
Key date coins of all series performed well. The Eliasberg 1909-S V.D.B. cent graded PCGS MS-66 RB, more than doubled its high estimate at $8,400, and a Gem 1955 Doubled Die in MS-65 RB (PCGS) also more than doubled its estimates with a $32,400 sale price. An MS-67 FB (PCGS) 1916-D Mercury dime, tied for finest certified, surpassed expectations at $204,000. The MS-66 1896-S quarter, tied for finest certified, brought $96,000 and the MS-67+ (PCGS) 1901-S Barber quarter realized $180,000. The MS-65 (PCGS) 1918/7-D overdate Standing Liberty quarter blew by estimates, selling for $90,000. The 1919-D quarter is a major condition rarity in superb gem grades, pushing the Pogue MS-66+ FH (PCGS) to a final price of $114,000. A 1932-S quarter in PCGS MS-66 brought $43,200 against its $20,000-25,000 estimate.
The PCGS-graded Pogue Washington quarter set won accolades for both superb grades and spectacular toning. Despite most coins being estimated in the few hundreds to few thousands of dollars, collectors bid the coins well beyond those levels. Some of the biggest differentials between estimate and final price included the MS-67 1934 ($6,000 vs. $400-500), MS-67+ 1938-S ($4,080 vs. $600-750), MS-66 1939 ($600 vs. $50-75), MS-67 1944 ($9,000 vs. $250-300), MS-67 1945-S ($7,200 vs. $300-350), MS-67+ 1948 ($7,200 vs. $600-750), MS-67 1949-D ($2,880 vs. $200-250), MS-67+ 1950-D ($5,280 vs. $250-300), MS-67 1950-S ($2,880 vs. $40-50), MS-67+ 1954-D ($6,600 vs. $550-700), and an MS-67 1963-D ($8,400 vs. 500-600).
Washington quarters weren’t the only coins that brought remarkable premiums for superb toning. A MS-67+ FS (PCGS) 1943-D nickel brought $6,600 (estimate: $100-300), a MS-67 FB (PCGS) 1916 Mercury dime with a gold CAC label brought $9,600 (estimate $700-800), a MS-68 (PCGS) 1892 Barber quarter brought $25,200 (estimate: $8,000-10,000), a MS-66 (PCGS) 1917-D quarter sold for $12,000 (estimate: $1,500-2,000), and a very dramatically toned MS-67 (PCGS) 1920-S quarter brought $40,800 on a $5,000-6,000 estimate. Every 2-cent and 3-cent piece in the sale surpassed pre-sale estimates also.
High-grade modern coins with superb toning also shined, led by a MS-66 (PCGS) 1976-D Eisenhower dollar at $4,080 (vs. a $50-100 estimate) and a MS-67 (PCGS) 1981-D Susan B. Anthony dollar at $2,640 (vs. a $200-300 estimate).

A small group of medals also performed well, including the Pogue silver Libertas Americana medal in PCGS MS-63 at $144,000, and a bronze Libertas Americana medal in PCGS MS-64 BN at $33,600.
