Hello there! Hope you enjoy and I'm very sorry for the long wait!

Annie, Ganji, Victor, & Aesop reacting to the death of a loved one

Warnings: Mentions and descriptions of death, mentions of embalming, mentions of not eating

Story type: Angst, No comfort, Gender neutral reader.

Characters/Pairings: Aesop Carl, Victor Grantz, Anne Lester, Ganji Gupta.

Aesop

Aesop remains silent with a deadpan facial expression on, but inside, his heart is aching. He knew this could and would eventually happen, death eventually claims everyone. So why? Why does it hurt so much? Why is he in so much pain at this?

Would personally request to be the one to embalm the loved one. He wants to be one of the last people to be able to see them even in death, wants to be able to hold their hand one last time even with how cold it is. No matter if the loved one is family, significant other, or just someone very close to him.

In public, Aesop remains proper and seemingly unemotional to the person's death. But inside his heart aches with the duality of the numbness to death and the pain of losing someone important.

He can and will force his way through being the one to embalm you, no matter if he has to do unethical actions or not, he'll be the one to do it with 0 objections.

When it comes to the funeral he would definitely attend, but never show any emotion during the ceremony. He would only stare blanklessly at the coffin you're resting in. At the end of the ceremony though when he's all alone, the tears will start falling.

Anne

"..Oh... I-I see.." Anne would softly and silently mutter out. "Thank you for telling me, please.. give me a moment." Afterwards she would lock herself in her room and sob for hours on end. She already lost her mother, had her heart broken by her fiance, was betrayed by her father, and now she loses another person that was important to her.

She would close down her toy shop for a few days, sitting in the solitude of her home and refusing to go outside. The only thing keeping her almost breaking sanity from cracking was her toys.

She would spend hours upon hours talking to her toys, her voice shakey and breaking as she chatted with them. "They're not dead.. they're not dead.. they're not.." she would brokenly mutter, in complete denial of the situation.

Due to this, she also neglects her own health. Not eating due to her solitude with took a toll on both her mental and physical health.

It won't be until she feels like starving and feels absolutely physically horrible she comes out of her solitude for once and slowly starts recovering from the mental anguish she's gone through. Even though, she'll continued to mourn and long for you for the rest of her life.

Victor

With a smile plastered on victors face he would write responses to the person who shared the news with you. The written response seeming calm and composed along with the smile plastered on his face. After Victor thanks the person who send him the news and they leave, small muffled whimpers come from his stitched mouth and tears start to form In his eyes.

Due to his nature of working for the mafia as a postman and the one who makes sure communication between it is solid, he's constantly running from place to place. Your death, making it hard to have the energy to run everywhere and deliver letters and supplies.

His impulsiveness of opening and checking every letter or package he's meant to deliver gets worse after you passing, as he'll desperately search for someone who echos his pain in the letters.

Wick can sense victors sadness and pain the whole time, the pain constantly eating away at his owners heart. The dog will try it's best to comfort Victor but to no avail, it doesn't work.

The whole time, Victor continues putting up this facade of happiness with a forced stitched smile. Yet his eyes red and swollen from all the crying and sobbing.

Ganji

Having lived without much friends and most likely poverty in his younger years, a close friendship with Ganji is one he extremely values. When that gets taken away from him though, he's seething with pain and rage.

Though he's a hotshot cricket player and absolutely amazing at it, he feels his motivation to continue training and continue playing starting to slowly dwindle and disappear.

A flurry of mixed emotions keep him up at night as he just sits up in bed and stares aimlessly at the ceiling. Sometimes, going outside In the night and aimlessly hitting cricket balls into the darkness. not caring how many he loss track of.

Ganji most of the time doesn't show his emotions fully other then his anger. Refusing to let the tears that desperately needed to fall drop down from his eyes.

Ganji knows he can't give up on his dream though, death is inevitable and there's nothing you can do about those who have left you. He'll keep heavy memories of laughter, sadness, and pain in his heart as he walks along the path he's chosen.

December 2023 Reading Update!

Despite how busy November was, I finished a bunch of things (though there were two short novellas and a DNF in there, to be fair)! So there's a bunch of mini-reviews ahead, balanced by the fact that December is a quiet month for publishing, so I don't have anything big to highlight coming up.

So here's the Keep Reading break for the Long Post ahead!

November Mini-Reviews

The Forest Brims Over by Maru Ayase - 4 stars

Each of the chapters is told from a different perspective, circling inward to Rui herself at the end. There's a lot of examination over gender roles and iniquities, though it plays a little softball with the subject for my taste. I tend to prefer when women are allowed their full rage, and kinda feel some folks were let off the hook a little easy.

Lone Women by Victor LaValle - 5 stars

This was a wild ride; I understand why folks can't say too much about this one, because the journey takes many unexpected turns. What you can expect is for the chills to come from human sources at least as often as supernatural ones. I'm more interested than ever to pick up The Changeling from LaValle now, as I've heard it's incredible, too.

Fresh Dirt from the Grave by Giovanna Rivero - DNF

As much as I enjoyed the first couple stories, there were iffy things in the next two or three that put me off, particularly with portrayals of Indigenous folks and disability. Chose not to finish and to leave it unrated.

The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill - 4.5 stars

Heartbreaking. Hard to say much without revealing too much for this short novella. Just be warned it's a lot of parental neglect and abuse for the main character.

Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo - 3 stars

I could make a full post as long as this one about my thoughts on this little novella. I will say the main character's already a mess going in, and the time spent with the wolf is actually not a whole lot. I could see the points the book was making, but the execution wasn't quite there for some of them. The prose was good, and I'm still interested in their novel, Summer Sons, for now.

Current December Reads

Speaking Bones by Ken Liu

Almost halfway through! Just got through a battle that lasted 100 pages, due to interludes about the development of the technologies involved, and that's delightfully typical of this series. 😹

Loot by Tania James

Almost 1/3rd through. Pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying this, so far. As a history nerd, I personally recommend looking up the situation in Mysore, India around the time of Tipu Sultan's reign for extra context and immersion.

Organ Meat by K-Ming Chang

Less than 50 pages in, but already noted down so many bits of prose I adore. This is absolutely not for everybody, both for sheer quantity of bodily fluids and functions mentioned, but also its shifting narrative style. So far chapters have been in first person POV, third person POV, and pure dialog written in a script-like format. Absolutely loving it.

The Lizard Prince and Other South American Stories

I forgot to mention I received my copy of this from Iron Circus Comics a couple months ago, after backing their crowdfunding for it last year! This completes their Cautionary Fables & Fairytales series, covering the stories of six continents!

Tomb Sweeping by Alexandra Chang

My pick from Book of the Month for December! It's an anthology of short fiction spanning the US and parts of Asia.

There's a lot to do this month for the holidays and preparations for the new year, so I'm not loading up my reading radar for now. If I finish Loot, I'll likely pick up my other giveaway win, Our Shadows Have Claws, so I can review it. If I finish Organ Meats, the next library read will depend on a few things, including how accessible my preferred branches are with holiday hours and inclement weather concerns 🙀

LOL ok since you sent the gimme hands.

Say hi to Tristan, the third of the Golden Thirties Victors (or the fourth in the Thirties, who won by accident, Two's first Victor by default).

Tristan got named for one of the Knights of the Round Table, continuing with the kind of mythological naming theme of the early Victors. My idea for him is that he's born lucky-parents are high-ranking in Two/the Capitol, he was one of the leaders in the Centre, all black strands, very accomplished-and then he's made unlucky, because his Tributes *never* win (Or he's unlucky because he wins by default). Tristan's Tributes make the Final Two, at best, but then they lose, or he picks the Tribute in bad situations, like Mentoring for the Fiftieth and his Tribute gets taken out by the volcano, or the Fifty-Third, and gets blown up by a mine. So he's the first/second unsuccessful Mentor, in the sense of not having a Victor.

Mentorwise, I've got a trio of options for him:

-Ronan. Tristan would be the last of the direct Ronan Victors, his final boy, following Caius, Luna, and Iris. Also gives Ronan the most Victors of any Mentor.

-Iris. This makes Tristan Adessa's younger Victor-sibling, and therefore uncle to Nero's whole line (Caius mentored Odin, while Luna mentored Hera; unless you want to flip it and make the "oh so chivalrous, old-fashioned (slightly sexist)" Odin into Luna's mentee, which means he'd have to be subordinate to a woman for his whole life).

-Adessa. Tristan would be Adessa's first Victor, and Nero her second, making Nero his younger Victor-brother. Not sure about this one, since you've written a lot about the Adessa-Nero relationship, and Nero's relationships within the Village, so maybe not? I just thought it would be interesting.

I've got a LOT of other thoughts, depending on which angle you'd like to take, but that's a big first chunk.

Now I'm thinking about the various options

FIRST OFF THOUGH IRONICALLY I'd just like to say that for all Odin's weird sexist chivalry he doesn't have any problems with female authority, so a female mentor wouldn't weird him out, and I kind of like having Hera and Odin's mentor-pairings be gender-swapped just for the fun of it. there's no reason for it other than flavour, but ... why not! and I do enjoy the head-desking she would do over getting the kid who always wants to hold doors for her.

(Hera: immediately starts holding doors for Caius, who thinks this is hilarious)

I don't ........ think ............ that Adessa has another victor other than Nero, the vibes seem off exactly like you're saying, but I actually love it being Iris. that gives Ronan's kids a Victor each and rounds out his legacy nicely (and gives a true meaning to the thirties as the Golden Decade even though most other decades have 3 in them!). and they're far enough apart in years -- and maybe don't have enough in common -- that he and Adessa don't really hang out that much, so he sticks with his age-peers instead of his mentor line.

that works for me? and also it would be fascinating because Adessa comes first, and she doesn't have a victor for a long time, but then she pulls Nero not long after his win, so he wouldn't know/remember all the long years where SHE backed the unlucky ones. so yeah, oof.

Just to prove you wrong, but in a good way, lol. For the Send Me A Fandom thing, let's go with Encanto, Charmed and Hawkeye. I'm not 100% sure of your fandoms, so answer the ones you can/want to for the Ask Game.

Definitely all things I enjoy! My favorites that would fall under fandom right now are MCU stuff, Bob's Burgers, Ted Lasso aaand... idk, I like a lot of/a lot more stuff, the list is very long haha

My apologies that I'm not putting a read more/cut off in here, but... yeah lol

Encanto (I admit I've only watched the whole thing once so far):

• blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) - Dolores is fantastic and so is Luisa, they're tied for me and give me a lot of feelings! Surface Pressure is on regular repeat and Dolores has great insight into people

• scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) - Antonio and Bruno are tied, and when they meet in person and Bruno is all emotionally wrecked and Antonio is supportive and comforting to him, that's lovely!

• scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) - Agustín, I love how sweet he is to his daughters

• glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) - lowkey... Casita. It's always in the background, but there's so much to unpack and theorize there and it's the most interesting axis of analysis and the family's trauma, and I love how the house loves Mirabel.

• poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) - Isabella. She's not a favorite for many people I think, and like, with good reason in regards to who she is shown to be at the beginning of the movie, but the pressure she's under to be a certain, very gendered iteration of perfect is so real. She's not outwardly pathetic, sure, but she is plenty prissy and I think it fits

• horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) - okay, none of them lmao. But also Camilo and Abuela. But like I don't want them to suffer, just want him to be in tricky situations because his powers are interesting, and I want her to reckon with how she's affected others a little more

• eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) - no one, like... the soldiers that killed Pedro, probably

Charmed (I do love this show - gonna go with the original here because I've only seen season one of the remake - the original makes for the best reruns, gives me all the late 90s early 00s nostalgia, it has been years since I did my proper full watch-through though):

• blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) - I like all the sisters well enough, but Piper really rates for me, I love her! Especially when she just gets shit done and when her powers get even more powerful

• scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) - Phoebe!!! Holy shit Alyssa Milano in this era was just, wow, and Phoebe was crazy adorable

• scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) - Victor. I love the sisters' dad. Him dipping in their childhood was shit, but he made himself so so present in their adulthoods, and loves them so much

• glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) - Darryl. He's just such a good, consistent, wholesome side character

• poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) - Chris kind of sucks and does bad things with his good intentions, but he provides all the mystery and angst for a while

• horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) - Cole, absolutely. He's horrible and I love him but I would poke him with a metaphorical stick all day

• eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) - listen, this is mean, but... Leo. Loved him in early seasons, was very annoyed with him in later seasons. Evil Wyatt and Chris' issues with him were valid

Hawkeye! (since I got caught up with one of my best friends, who I miss and think about every single day, on the MCU, I've stayed current! I have a lot of feelings about all the recent MCU shows!):

• blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) - Yelena??? Clint??? Can't decide, won't decide lol. Getting Yelena's backstory I was fairly fresh off seeing Black Widow and really enjoyed her! But with Clint, after the universe being 20+ movies in, until this show, he was a totally middling character to me, and this show made me actually interested in him, especially seeing him interact with his kids and wife and the development of him being hard of hearing. And the constant exasperation, that was good lol

• scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) - KATE, she's just such a kid and a try hard, but she is so precious

• scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) - MAYA. I don't know for sure if she's underappreciated, but however appreciated she is it should be MORE, I love Maya

• glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) - listen. I did not care about Laura Barton before this. I actively made fun of ~hawkeye's farm family~ because they were a product of the weird nonsense going on in Age of Ultron and had no development. But! Laura is now mixed up in theorizing about comic to MCU character adaptation and also was highly competent and useful and kind and I like her now

• poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) - Jack lol. He's bananas but SO up for joining LARPers in helping Hawkeye² at the end, which I love, but that man also so very truly does not know what's going on

• horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) - Eleanor. It's just... needed. But also Kazi, because Maya deserved better than how he was there for her but also not, not enough

• eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) - Kingpin, hands down

Sexuality Headcanon: He's not really sure about all that yet because he's still pretty young but I do headcanon him as biromantic. He also falls in love incredibly easily, like someone in his age group could say one (1) nice thing to him and suddenly he'll catch himself daydreaming about holding their hand. (He also holds hands with all of his friends though so sometimes it turns out to just be a platonic desire, listen he's just very touchy-feely and maybe a lil platoniromantic as well but I'm probably just projecting.)

Gender Headcanon: Trans boy! Although I also really love him as nonbinary too.

A ship I have with said character: Not really any, but if I were to be talked into any of them it would be trainshipping (Victor).

A BROTP I have with said character: Gloria! The two of them are constantly getting into trouble together and if there are shenanigans going down in Galar there's a 95% chance they're involved and a 75% chance they caused it. They share a singular braincell and it's not a particularly good one fdhjkfhjk

A NOTP I have with said character: Cheeryfairyshipping (Bede). While I understand everybody on this godforsaken website goes feral for the enemies to lovers trope there are just some situations where the negative feelings can't be overcome and this is one of them. Bede said some genuinely horrible things to Hop and while both have moved past it and become better people the fact of the matter is that any potential romantic attraction Hop could have felt for Bede was shot dead the moment Bede decided to be mean. It goes hand in hand with my earlier headcanon — if Hop immediately falls for people who are nice to him, he in turn immediately loses all interest in people who are cruel to him. Not to say that he doesn't think people can change, and he's (mostly) forgiven Bede for what happened, but he's just got a You Get One Chance type of heart, y'know? Anyway I've yelled about this enough I'm just EUGH over this ship

A random headcanon: I could go on a whole rant about how I claim him as autistic and all the headcanons that go with that (and if anyone wants me to hmu) but this specifically said "random" and let's be real autistic headcanons are pretty par for the course for me. So instead I will leave you with this. Even though Sonia puts him to work helping her research Dynamaxing, what he's really interested in are regional variants of Pokémon and what causes them, as while there are theories about the variants in Alola, the origins of a lot of the Galarian forms are still shrouded in mystery. He's hoping Sonia lets him focus on researching it more as he gets older, and he'd especially like to be able to travel to other regions for studying too. (This is an important Plot Point in the story that lives in my head featuring my trainer Aden.)

General Opinion over said character: Well, just in case you can't tell, he's my son and I love him. He's one of my top two favorite rivals, the other being Barry, and he's tied with Hau for the Goodest Boy Award. Hop is genuinely what made me fall in love with Sword/Shield and he made my experience with the game an absolute treasure. It really felt like going on an adventure alongside your best friend who's known you since forever and understands you like no one else does, an experience I've often craved as someone who grew up feeling very isolated. People can whine and complain about friendly rivals being Bad Actually all they want but the fact of the matter is I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this game if I was left with just Bede and Marnie as my rivals. Friends are good things, and Hop is a very good friend!

HEADCANONS: These are typical, very straightforward. Bulletpoints that consist of content.

5 characters (MAX)

SCENARIOS: These are more story-based and will not exceed too long. I would compare them to drabbles somewhat, but I will not cut them too short.

2 characters (MAX)

DRABBLES: Short in length, will range around 1,100 words or less. These will primarily be based on prompts.

3 characters (MAX)

IMAGINES: Long works that will be story-based. Number of words will not be ranged, and details will be very much there.

1 character (MAX)

What I WILL NOT write:

NON-CON: I do not stand for anything of the sort, and I will ask that anybody requesting refrain from requesting anything of this sort. This is not only an uncomfortable topic, but an illegal one, and while illegal topics are not off the board - this one is.

EXPLICIT SEXUAL CONTENT: I will write for suggestive content, but I reserve the right to deny any of this type. While this may change in the future, I do not feel comfortable writing this kind of content at the moment. This is primarily reserved for any requests that state anything in regards to kinks, sexual acts, etc. (If you want something suggestive, please indicate.)

TOO MANY CHARACTERS: If you see above, I have marked how many characters I will allow per writing type request. Anymore than the maximum number will be denied.

INCEST: Do I have to explain why I won’t write this type of content? This is disgusting and outright disturbing, and I would like to keep my mind out of that realm.

OMEGAVERSE: Too in depth, too time consuming. I have a lot of other activities, and if you want a specific request, I will do the best that I can in regards to research. Otherwise, this particular request has an extensive history and intake of knowledge

UNDERAGE RELATIONSHIPS: This is unlawful and disgusting, and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. (This includes teacher and student relationships.)

ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS: This whole topic is something that is very disturbing and very much scary. It is also for a primary of the character being an abuser. I will not write the characters as abusers in relationships due to respect for the creators and the readers.

CHARACTER X CHARACTER: This is meant for direct request. Unless this is a small detail in a different request, this is not going to be permitted. Ship who you want, but I do not write explicitly for ships.

What I WILL write:

SUGGESTIVE CONTENT: All characters will be aged up if underage, and will not go into (hopefully) too extreme detail. I will include the content under cut for reader discretion.

SIBLING/PARENT FIGURE: This is specifically for a platonic/guardian-based relationship. This will not include any romance, but rather revolve around the familial aspect.

‘AU’S: Though I still reserve the right to deny certain AUs, I am not against any of these being requested. In fact, I love AUs, and writing them can be so much fun.

VIOLENCE: This is going to be worrying, but if violence is requested, I am fine with including it. This is going to be done in detail (if the request calls for it), and will be indicated with a disclaimer at the beginning of the requested piece.

ANGST: This is limited to certain things, of course, but if you want to ask for an angsty piece, go ahead.

MENTAL DISORDERS/MEDICAL CONDITIONS/BODY SPECIFICATIONS: These can be very messy, but I will do research to fulfill your request the best way I can. If I do manage to misconstrue the topic, don’t hesitate to tell me. (I know that this is a sensitive topic, so I want to be able to get it right.)

HORROR: This is where I will be willing to bend a few things, typically for yandere plots and things of a similar vein. I love to write this kind of thing, but this also means that the limits will be pushed, so if you want to request this, proceed with caution.

NOTE: All of my works will be written with gender neutral default, so if you want a male or female reader, then specify.

EMERGENCY REQUESTS:

This is for the moments when you need something written. Generally follows the same circumstances written above, but there are a few differences.

RESPONSE TIME: This is going to be within the span of a week. It is a slight long shot, but since I am unaware of the urgency of the requester’s request, this will be the general time span in which this will be written. This is subject to change over time, though.

REQUEST LIMITS: There will be none for things of this sort, but I will have to cap them off if there are too many coming in. I don’t want to do so, but it will have to happen if things get too overwhelming. (Again, this is only in the situation that these requests become overwhelming.) I want to make sure that these pieces are good and well-thought out so the requester(s) can enjoy them and find comfort in them, and I can’t do that when overwhelmed.

LABELING: When requesting for an emergency request, please label it as such. I don’t want to lump things of this sort in with the others since the requester may want it as soon as possible, and the regular requests typically tend to take me a week or more to write.

oooh new format for this post let’s get into itttt.

Below are my reaction per episode. I will be writing them as i finish each so its more clear and fresh and all that jazz.

Let’s see if tumblr posts has a word count limit.

Note, the #glassthoughts tags is a reaction tag. Its never a review, or an intellectual essay about stuff I watch. I dont have the capacity to do all those.

Spoilers below so beware. Episode 1 is posted separately because I intend to make posts for the first and last epsiode only but that did not work out lol.

EPISODE 2

it took me a looong time to finish this episode. I kept on pausing it because something just feels so wrong about it. I didn’t know what it was when i was going through it, but when it finally ended it finally clicked.

The episode reminds me of the sentiment most homophobes use against gay people. “If you focus on the emotional part of the relationship, you will be happy with the opposite sex.” Growing up ive heard this phrase used against other people so much. Hearing it in my native language has always been a punch in the gut.

And now this show who is supposed to be something happy and nice, is just having this kind of phrase of mentality just well up there.

I’m sure that its not Victor’s and that he is just exploring his sexuality. But the usual tinge of homophobia whenever he talks that he might be like Simon is honestly grating.

It’s definitely a me issue because other people seem to be enjoying the series immensely, but whenever Victor gets into that headspace, I just hear my child self crying myself to sleep because of internal homophobia.

Also i can see why people say that for a show that is supposed be about Victor’s sexuality and growth, it does sure show a heck lot of heterosexuality of those who are around him.

Maybe in the future i will rewatch the series again with a more patient mind, but for now, expect me to skip a lot of scenes X_X

Okay the audacity of Victor saying “he tries” to be a good friend. Like dang okay chill with the lies. You’re already lying about your sexuality lmao.

Honestly Felix is just a lesbian in a man’s body at this point. Making his own shampoo? Like wow give me some of that kind of friend.

The number of times I rolled my eyes at Andrew is ridiculous.

Whilst typing this part it was more enforced in my mind that Love Victor is just a “supposedly gayer” Teen Wolf without the wolfing parts.

Lake is Lydia Felix is Stiles Andrew is a walmart Jackson Benji is basically a less grumpy Derek or Danny tbh Victor is Scott

I really hate this idea now.

The parents drama! Honestly, very unnecessary in my opinion. Victor is already dealing with a religious family, now he has to deal with a religious and broken family? Like dang they could’ve just chosen one struggle for him, now everyone will think his sexuality is a consequence for his parents’ sin or sth.

Maybe it’ll play into a bigger plot twist in the future?

Maybe Victor’s mom is cheating with Mia’s father? Seeing as how there was an unnecessary shot of her father with the back of a woman facing on the camera which is weird but okay.

Anyways have y’all seen how poor Felix was so nervous because his goddamn friend isn’t there to supposedly help him?

Sorry im hating on Victor too much but this scene reminds me of how awful Simon’s friends are and like bruuuh is Felix supposed to be the lead character?

He really is like Stiles who is supposed to be the lead for Teen Wolf in my opinion, he’s just a much better written character that Sc/tt

This series is just showing all the fear and pain i went through and am going through back when I was a teenager and til now. Without getting into any personal stuff, that last bs Victor’s father spewed just hit me so much.

I guess one of the reasons why its hard for me to watch Love Victor is because it shows me the teenager side of me way back when. Minus the girlfriend one because i never really persevered that much to tamper any likes for men. Internal homophobia really hit me back then tho xD

Episode 6

This episode is a mess and I hate it.

We saw yet again Victor literally using Felix’s ignorance and naivety to get himself out of a situation he put himself into.

AND Felix even got the wrong idea or got fed with the wrong idea that the reason why Victor brought him along is to act as a buffer because he wasn’t ready to give up being a virgin or have sex in general. Yep that is definitely the reason, no other reason at all that involves making latte art with a known barista.

Lake and Felix kissed so there was that. I still am shipping Victor and Felix together despite Victor’s continuous bs with him being a good friend, but that’s just me.

And totally knew Andrew and Mia got a thing. If this blew up and hurt Lake im suing.

Lake and Felix are literally the two people keeping this show intact. Not gonna drop some political statement here no sir.

Again Benji needs to grow a personality out of this whole barista thing. One thing i am grateful for this show is that there was no family drama at all!

UGHHH MISS ME WITH THAT NORMAL TALK.

Ive been making a conscious effort to stop saying that heterosexuality is normal. That shit is hard to unlearn because its what ive always heard in my asian household for yeaaaaaaars. And now this twink is just gonna throw the term around like he has no issues with it. TO SIMON EVEN.

Like brooooooh. Im over my 2010 internal homophobia, no need to dig it all up again. Every episode.

FUCKING VICTOR LIED JUST FOR WHAT?

Homeboy be doing the most to keep his fucking sexuality from bursting out, with his foot both planted firmly inside the closer AND THEN THE NEXT SECOND would end up as if he is ready to risk it all just to see Benji naked.

I AM FUCKING livid, confused, and just intense emotion everywhere.

Ive seen a couple of dumbo scenes from other shows that got the “closeted” man be doing literally the most obvious shit that could make anyone catch them, BUT THIS, with how VEHEMENT Victor is against being “NOT NORMAL” AND THEN LIE JUST TO STAY IN A MOTEL WITH THE GLORIFIED HOT GUY, takes the goddamn cake.

BUT fucking please recognize how damaging that is to the person you are talking to. Even if you think Victor is in the 100% right about this, AT THE VERY LEAST acknowledge why Benji is mad. Sure he could’ve just left with his boyfriend instead of just staying there. And sure Victor pulled through in the end and put that dusty grandpa motherfucker to his place, but that’ll fucking sting okay.

Benji distancing himself because he wants to make his 1 year relationship work? Good guy! Him not saying to his boyfriend about the coworker of his kissing him? Bad move.

Sure we can all talk about how little stuff doesn’t need to be told to your lover if you’re sure its not gonna happen again. The thing is, communication is key. Y’all will talk about communication being integral in a relationship but keep shit like this in the DL because yOU’RE JUST THAT SURE IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN? Fo real?

Also Benji is feeling guilty for a reason.

Vincent is very in the wrong for kissing a taken man just because said taken man is comfortable with him or showed vulnerability. Victor is in the wrong 100% and I’ll never forget that.

Felix and that hug with Victor is adorableeee. Love that coming out scene. Again raising my eyebrows at those who say Victor is Bi.

Felix showing what’s in his apartment is fucking great. No wonder we don’t see his mom or anything. They say that the saddest people are always the one who will do their best to keep everyone happy. Felix is being peppy, have these random phrases he use to just amuse people makes sense.

In this household, we protect Felix no matter what. HOPEFULLY next season we get to fucking know his surname or sth.

Again nothing new with the drama surrounding the parents. I hate them and honestly i am so annoyed by the father’s face and everything. (still have that hatred from One day at time but we don’t talk about that here)

The letter is stupid and i wonder what Pilar will do about it. Are we gonna get a To All the boys i loved before thing?

OH Felix giving Lake an ultimatum. Wow what a move honestly. On one hand Felix has the right to protect himself. He wants to be free with who he loves, and keeping it a secret stopped being amusing because he knew what it feels like to hide a part of yourself.

Lake’s confidence has been obviously shot and damaged by her mother. Not saying that justifies what she is doing BUT it came from somewhere. A night with Felix talking to her about his life IS NOT going to just uproot all those thoughts from her mind. As much as i love Felix, he is not a solution.

Even if the show is for Gen Z and this generation, coming out should reflect to how coming out is generally perceived nowadays. But i guess that was too much. PEARL VICTOR ( CAMILLE WINBUSH ) is a 17 year old JUNIOR student at Broadripple Academy. SHE is originally from COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA but moved to Broadripple ONE YEAR ago. SHE is HARD-WORKING and SPIRITED but can also be BLUNT and INATTENTIVE.

1. Full Name?

Pearl Eunice Victor.

2. Preferred Names or Nicknames?

None! Pearl is Pearl, end of story.

3. What does their name mean? Does it have any significance in their family? Do they like their name?

Pearl was named in memory of her great-grandmother, and that mantle is something she wears with-well, not a sense of pride, but a sense of duty. Eunice was just a name they thought sounded nice, although it’s original form does mean victory in Greek, which might make it a teensy bit redundant. Oops!

4. Age and Date of Birth?

17! She was born May 20th, 2002.

5. Gender and Pronouns?

Cis female (she/her).

6. Hometown?

Columbia, South Carolina. As such, Broadripple has been a fairly big shift for Pearl, but she’s trying to deal with it as best she can!

7. Does your character fit into any well known archetypes or tropes?

Bits of Pearl’s demeanor do fall into the classic Southern Belle archetype, generally sweet if also fairly hard-headed if there’s something she wants to fight for, but she’s not exactly accustomed to rural life.

8. How long have they been at Broadripple?

Pearl transferred into Broadripple for her sophomore year of high school, and has remained there ever since.

9. What led them to apply to Broadripple? Was it a decision made by them or by their parents/guardians or somewhere in between?

It was a joint decision, although one that was largely made by her father, a pastor at the largest AME church in Columbia. Despite Broadripple being a Catholic institution, he felt that it’s reputation meant that his beloved daughter, his only female child as well as his youngest, deserved to have the opportunities that being a Broadripple student would provide.

10. Whether they’ve been at Broadripple four days or four years, do they enjoy it? Do they like Broadripple?

In all honestly, Pearl doesn’t know if she can say that she enjoys Broadripple or not. Sure, it’s facilities are a heck of a lot better than anything she had back in Columbia, and yes, some of the boys were real cute, but despite everything, she still feels a disconnect between herself and the student populace as a whole. Maybe it’s her color, maybe it’s the fact that so many of them have no idea what struggle is. Or, maybe it’s the fact they don’t approve of her efforts of trying to start a cheer squad. In any case, Pearl enjoys parts of Broadripple, but can’t quite see she enjoys it is a whole.

11. What house are they in? Do they care very much about their house?

Pearl is part of Seton, and honestly, most events related to the houses are the events in which Pearl displays the most enthusiasm. While she generally believes in school spirit as a whole, her competitive nature means that house events are the best way to sate that thirst, considering she doesn’t take part in any of the sports teams.

12. Who do they share a dorm with, or are they on their own for the moment? What are they like to live with? Are they clean or messy? Early risers or night owls?

At this point in time, Pearl is rooming on her own, and she would very much hope to keep it that way! Not because isn’t a good roommate, because she would definitely tell you she is - and, at the very least, she keeps her side quite organized if a bit garish with it’s constant use of baby pinks and blues, and with her waking up at 6 sharp in order to look over her work for the day.

13. How is your character’s dorm decorated? Is it bare or bursting at the seems with personality? Any particular sentimental items from home?

Pearl keeps scrapbooks with her favorite family memories tucked into a drawer in her dorm, considering she’s boarding at Broadripple and only able to go visit her family during long holidays. Her dorm room, as mentioned earlier, is decorated with family memories, as well as her fond memories of cheer and gymnastics, which she keeps framed all around.

14. What is their favourite subject at school? Do they even have a favourite? Why?

As an astrophysicist, Pearl would be amiss to put anything other than physics as her favorite class! What initially began as a fascination with astrology ended up becoming a genuine interest in astronomy, and ever since the eighth grade, Pearl has aimed for working at NASA, even though she knows it currently isn’t exactly in the best state.

15. Are they involved in any clubs? Which ones?

Pearl is a member of the Chamber Choir, the Buddy Club, as well as the Student Weekend Activities Team, if only because she enjoys busying herself. She has been preparing herself for a run from Student Council, and as such, been considering joining Women of Broadripple as a way to gain at least some measure of recognition before she does announce her candidacy, but for now, she hasn’t made any concrete moves on that front.

16. How does your character feel about Broadripple’s Unofficial Clubs? Do they know about them? Are they a part of any of them?

Pearl regards the BBC with some disdain, although she supposes their antics do liven up the school environment. (Also, their parties are pretty good.) As someone trying not to get involved with any drama at campus, at least not through delving into things the administration would want exposed, she isn’t exactly fond of the kids going around trying to stir shit up.

17. Does your character participate in any sports? If so, what made them join the team?

Nope! In her previous school, Pearl was a cheerleader, but seeing as how Broadripple doesn’t have a cheer squad, she doesn’t participate.

18. What afternoon activities does your character do? Do they just do the one mandatory one or are they involved in multiple? Why?

Pearl both volunteers at a nursing home, and does dance. Dance is the closest thing she has to cheer, and she generally specializes in contemporary, while she both genuinely enjoys community service and believes that it will help her college applications.

Pearl stays in frequent contact with her family through weekly videochats with her parents, but in order to save on money, she is only able to go back to South Carolina during long breaks, something that still doesn’t exactly sit well with he.

20. Did your character know Izzy De Santis or Maggie Monroe?

Pearl generally has no idea who Izzy is other than that crazy dude who punched someone, but as Maggie was in her batch, she can’t hep but feel a bit uncomfortable about the entire situation. Not that she liked Maggie - Pearl loved God, too, but Maggie seemed a little off to her, but the fact that she’s just up and gone means something must have gone wrong.

21. Has your character heard of Edith Lynch? Do they know the story?

Pearl has heard murmurs about incidents going on, but she hasn’t bothered to read up on any of the details surrounding it, so she has little to no idea about the specifics of the Edith Lynch incident.

22. How does your character feel about Nighmore? Have they noticed the recently closed shops yet?

Call her judgey, but Pearl doesn’t like Nighmore. The people are too nice, especially in the wake of the things that have been going down. Pearl has felt this way for some time, though, and besides briefly noting that there seem to be less places to hang out in Nighmore, she hasn’t put too much thought into it, mainly filtering it into a list of all the other reasons Nighmore gives her the heebie jeebies.

How Not to Write Gay Stories

I’m very torn between writing two different posts and there’s a chance these may combine, so we’ll see how this goes. There are two topics that are in my mind a fair amount: gay fetishism by women authors (both in fanfic & professional writing), and how to translate fanfic writing skills to professional writing (and how it can fail). Miraculously, perhaps, the book I just read, How (Not) To Ask a Boy to Prom by SJ Goslee is a fairly good example of both of these.

The problem with addressing gay fetishism among women authors is that when is it fetishistic versus well-meaning? It’s hard for me to say why the originators of gay slash fic wrote the way they did, but its hard to miss that when fanfic especially grew prominent, over 80% of writers were women. In Star Trek fandom, the first gay slash fic was published by a woman in 1974: A Fragment Out of Time. By 1973, 90% of ST fan writers were women.

To clear the air a little: women writers can write good gay stories. One of series I am currently read, The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb, includes many gay men, some of which are centered POVs. I will not say she is a perfect author, but I deeply enjoy how she writes men. For a good portion of the series, she shows a man growing up: he starts as a young boy, and we see how the men around him teach him to be a man. A very good portion of the lessons stray away from toxic masculinity. He is still taught to be a man, and there are certain “this is a manly trait” aspects (although when she features women as forefront POV, she often includes very similar lessons: ultimately nothing is exclusive to one’s sex, but society is what it is and they may learn lessons differently or overcome different hurdles).

She addresses writing gay men in this interview: Here’s the thing - when I meet a person, their gender identity is most often not the most important thing about them. If we become friends, it’s not because my first impulse is, “I will be friends with you because you’re female.” I mean, there’s a lot of women I can’t stand. There’s a lot of men that I absolutely can spend hours talking to. There are a lot of people on the whole gender spectrum and whether I become friends with them or not has nothing to do with that, so when I am writing these characters, although in some ways gender can influence a plot - for instance, if you want the prince and the princess to get married and live happily ever after in a medieval setting, gender is going to influence that - but for the most part, gender is not much more important than who has blue eyes. What’s more important is who is a skilled navigator, who is tough enough to survive a bad situation, who can think on their feet and find the creative solution to a problem they haven’t encountered before, and that’s got nothing to do with gender. So it was not that I said, “Gee, I will write a book with gay characters.” It was, I’m writing a book, this character has stepped out onto the stage, he’s told me about him- or herself, and this is who they are. As I said: I’m not here to say that women cannot write gay stories. But there is also gay fetishism. I am both a gay man and a trans man; I get a lot of “OMG, you’ll love this!” and cis or straight people presenting me with things that appear inclusive or caring. I personally don’t find memes like “Steve Rogers is a transwoman!”** or whatever amusing. Am I, say, happy to see that Loki is canonically not straight nor cisgender? Yes. I love that. (Does that potentially make Victor von Doom not straight, uh, I like to think so.) I like reading LGBT+ stories, but a good portion of them may not interest me, especially if the writer isn’t part of that demographic and has a tendency to post a lot of art, writing, or discuss a lot of how hot, cute, or general appealing it is that a character or couple are LGBT. That creeps me out. I’m not alone. Very not alone. Absolutely not alone. Here’s another post, this time by a woman that I appreciate:

The worst thing,” one gay friend said, “is that [women in the slash community] aren’t listening to me. You’re not listening when I tell you that you’re being hurtful.”

What I find especially difficult to convey is the nuances to when women write gay men versus when men do. I’ve been trying to collect “gay stories written by gay men” although due to publishing bias, this can be very difficult: As a queer, trans reader, I looked forward to seeing myself in their pages. But I was surprised to find that some LGBTQ-focused stories were reflecting not me, but a straight person’s imagination of me. [Link 1]

The current transman story I like is seen in Early Riser by Jasper Fforde. The character utterly blindsided me in a great way: he never appeared “omg trans” until it was forced to come to light. I appreciate him as well, as a character, because in a harsh survival world, he is a man who survives well. I especially see a lot of “transmen are soft uwu such boi” and I despise this. I did not survive everything in my life to be diminished to pastels and cute/sweet and childish-boyish characteristics. Similarly, as a gay man, I am not there to be pretty, to serve as a fashion guru for straight people, to be soft and pretty and welcoming. And that’s not how gay men write themselves. This isn’t how transmen write themselves. As a writer, I struggled a lot on how to depict trans characters, and my largest lesson (and I certainly hope to published one day, but who knows) is that I never saw good examples of myself because most typically they are written by straight, cis women. So what is so wrong with Goslee’s How (Not) To Ask A Boy to Prom? (There will absolutely be spoilers.) The main character is a teen boy who has long hair, loves succulents aggressively, loves narwhals, and has no male friends. His school is supportive of gay men: a very popular football player is gay and has supportive friends, another gay teen (who becomes his boyfriend) has very supportive friends. For some reason, this gay teen is incapable to do anything for himself. He loves art, doesn’t do sports, doesn’t really connect with his foster parents, and seems overly attached to his sister. He is effectively a very flat and “soft” person. Some guys are, of course. Some gay guys are more art, less sports. But the other men? Si & Bern? They’re equally soft. Si is described as soft, beautiful, kind, sweet. He has zero personality. He is described the same way, every time, and is overly described as soft, all men are soft, it’s like they bathe in fabric softener. Bern, the “bad boy” is barely... That. He is supposed to be gruff to the main character, but for the good portion, he is like the main character (Nolan), and Si. They are all the same person, ultimately.

Bloom might be a good comparison to How (Not) To Ask a Boy to Prom. This is written by a man (Kevin Pancetta) and illustrated by a woman (Savanna Ganucheau). I don’t like the character design. Most of the gay men I showed it to asked if at one of the guys (or both) are women. But it is a story about a frustrated kid who wants to move out of his small town to Baltimore (okay: as a Marylander who grew up in a very small town and eventually moved to Baltimore, I kinda.... Get this), but meets another man who is older, but not creepily too old for him, and its a romance & vague coming of age story. If you grew up in a small city as LGBT+, it’s hard to find your sense of self. You miss out a lot on life; I think Ari reflects that: he wants to be himself. A lot of this enters into my point 2: The problem of being a fanfic writer, or the pitfalls of translating fanfic writing skills to professional writing. Nolan is not a person; he has no strong characteristics. We’re told he likes narwhals and succulents, he is a foster child, he’s gay, and I have trouble quantifying him the way I do Ari because he’s so devoid of personality. Si is probably the least developed character at all, as the “perfect, Apollo-esque gay football player.” Bern is maybe the most developed, going from gruff-mean guy to gay softy--a motorcycling math nerd. The problems with fanfic writing is that it is based on knowing characters. As fanfic writers, we don’t have to nail down reality, because there’s a whole piece devoted to who they are. We’re just filling in those blanks. The author seems to primarily be a Teen Wolf fanfic writer (her bio lists “werewolves,” but her tumblr blog is very devoted to Teen Wolf, so well). This brings up another creepy pitfall, which is beyond slash fic writing, there is the aspect of word usage. If you’ve been following my vague live-reading, I’ve been posting about the massive references to “puppy” and other trends. It is creepy to read out of context.

It seems, according to reviews, that Goslee has trouble with this in her other book, Whatever: or how junior high became totally f$@ked. She has a stream of consciousness that doesn’t explain the main character’s thoughts or the world very well. In fanfic writing, this would end up being a slow burn. “Oh, but are they really going to date?” etc. In How Not, Nolan fake-dates Bern, and googles this concept, finding fanfic works. This gets weird for me, because it’s supposed to be an inside joke, I guess? “Hey teeny nerds: fanfics” but most gay men I know have a difficult relationship with fanfic and with fan community due to fetishism. We get pressed out of spaces a fair amount because of it. (One link above, the Mary Sue one, discusses how women do this.) Of course, this is meant to be a cute, happy book, right? Alright, it’s a cute, upbeat story. Except we don’t get a very good baseline for the world. Bern & Si’s friends are supportive. We get a form of negativity from Bern’s mother, who wishes he’d date his ex-gf, I think? (Bern is bisexual.) Or maybe just date women. So is there homophobia in this world or not? We aren’t given a good sense how Nolan’s parents feel that he is gay? It seems to wholly not discuss his foster parents barring “they are aggressively competitive, Tom makes crazy food concoctions and Marla talks to him about dating Bern.” As a whole, the parents are extremely unimportant other than they provide a home and food. Are they unusual for the area? (And knowing PA, that state can have some major issues.) Or is it common in this world? Is there a reason to not hand-hold? Do they every worry about homophobia when outside school? Do the teachers say shit? There is a lot to consider. The world-building is deeply lacking. Beyond the lack of world, we get a lot of fanfic trope writing. A lot of this I’ve seen from people on my dash who are Teen Wolf fans. I used to like the show & follow TW blogs; I’m not a massive fanfic reader (*ahem* a lot of gay fetishism), but I have read it. For series like TW, you may see what I consider “animalistic tropes;” such as tackling, growling, etc. There is a lot of this. A lot of people are tackling each other to the ground, growling, and there’s this weird moment when Bern grabs the nape of Nolan’s neck that while some men do this, it felt very strange in the moment, particularly aggressively? Because the author openly admits to writing werewolf fanfic, it feels like that is what it is. For authors who write both fanfic and seek to write professionally, this is a consideration. For a gay reader, it’s really weird for a guy to grab another guy’s “nape of the neck” affectionately. (As someone who has worked around large predators, albeit primarily felids, grabbing the neck is a sexual behavior, but that just makes this weirder.) Anyways, it really struck out as weird; just very very weird. Bern is mentioned to not be into PDA (which later in the book, they do it a fair amount it seems, that is also very weird? this happens a fair amount).

Another part is that there is a lot of use of the word puppy. It is frequents so often that I’d have to stop reading because it was grossing me out. It sounds like that author is into puppy play. This isn’t to kink shame, but this is a YA novel and she writes werewolf fanfic. It starts seemingly, albeit weirdly innocuous with moments like “Bern was smooth and graceful while I was still growing out of my puppy paws” and “She tilted her head like a puppy” and “I followed him up the stairs like a puppy.” But it keeps happening. Then people start growling at each other and it just... Gets a very specific note. Mixed in with how smooth and hairless and Adonis-like the teens are written, especially by an adult woman fan, it feels... Well... It makes my skin crawl. I’m not saying that the author means to. I’m really not trying to be like ‘Hey, guys, sexual predator?” I really, really want to address that that is not my intention. My intention is that this compounds on itself. In the links about how the slash side of fandom can make gay men uncomfortable: this is the perfect example. I’ve been to events with fans and found myself, barring maybe my fiance, to be the only gay man there. If I’m shipping two characters, such as when I went to a TAZ photoshoot, and my fiance and I are the only gay cosplayers, and almost the only men period, whereas a lot of women are screaming about how cute Taako is, that gets uncomfortable. It’s not about this one fandom. It’s all fandoms. Every single one has had this fetishization problem. It’s why I never entered the Lord of the Rings fandom. I was in middle school and found “my first” fandom, only to see all of the fanfic about Sam/Frodo ships and it grossed me out. As a teen boy, it creeped me out, that all these men had to be sexual to each other, and as I only came across women shipping men, it made it more and more ostracizing. Maybe I should have addressed this earlier, but: Not all fetishization is sexual. It can be romantic, too. How (Not) to Ask a Boy to Prom’s relationships are about a teen boy who doesn’t want to date or go to prom. His sister makes him ask out Si, the big popular gay guy. Nolan/the author mocks the GSA (gay-straight alliance) club. While there are problems with some GSAs*, the author, a seemingly straight woman, is mocking an LGBT+ space. There is a chance she is bisexual; I haven’t managed to find otherwise, and that’s how this will appear to many people, as she has a husband. I will also note: a bisexual woman’s experience will differ from a gay man’s experience, and sometimes LGBT+ folks need to not speak for/over each other. Nolan ends up fake-dating Bern due to a mistake, and there’s a bit of problem I have, with how for a good portion of the book, these gay teens “need to FAKE date”. Worse to me, is that Nolan, upon realizing he likes Bern, breaks up with him and ends up sleeping (non-sexually) in a bed with his sister, deciding to go to prom together. For a straight/cis-presenting women to write this, it’s... Got a lot of different baggage to it. Especially with how idealistic (but not for gay men) she writes the characters, it gets worse and worse. It makes the gay character seem just a little less gay. His relationship with his sister is odd. It’s not “cool” to really hang out with your sister at school; I know, I had a step sister & brother. We were all roughly the same age. If these two went to prom together in the real world? They would be mocked. Also, it really makes Nolan appear not actually gay. As a gay writer, I would have him, if not go at all, go stag. The message here is: it’s better to be straight than gay and without a boyfriend. Hence how it becomes fetishistic: Nolan’s sister, both of which are older teens (around 17-18 or so) sleep together in a bed. It may not be “coded as sexual” but it is ignorant of the history that “maybe gay men can be fixed.” They even dance at prom. This is one step below asking your mother to prom. She is still his sister. It creates a narrative that he, out of the blue, dumps his boyfriend to then sleep/cuddle with his sister and they go to prom. Again, this is seen more in fanfic: we often, especially with adopted siblings, see closeness that can become romantic or sexual. I have a fair amount of friends who are adopted and this trope style is infinitely horrifying to them. It makes them feel like that society doesn’t view them as actually family. It is also a real problem: adopted family members (especially kids) have been abused by their adopted family, as if “it’s okay, they’re not actually biologically family.”

While he does eventually get back together with Bern, it’s after prom that he does this. I don’t even know why Bern accepts him. Nolan has been truly awful to this guy. Goslee doesn’t seem to understand how tenuous gay men’s statuses are. This can be held against Nolan, if not for the simple creepy fact that he sleeps and goes to prom with his sister, that he goes to prom with a woman, he may get a lot of “But are you really gay?” comments. Especially because Nolan dates only one man before going to prom with his sister (and is the one to dump his boyfriend, who he was fake-dating).

Is there more on this I could write? Yes. I probably could, but I also have to get ready to go to a movie with my fiance. So uh... Maybe there will be a part 2? We’ll see. _______ *I personally was forced out of my college’s GSA because the group was actually gay/bisexual people having orgies. So, yea, there’s some problems with certain LGBT+ spaces and being actually open to LGBT+ folks. It was also extremely transphobic and ace-phobic. **My point with this for clarification is that: I don’t want to be bribed with “lol this person is LGBT+ cuuuute!?” headcanon or otherwise. I am fine with that form of headcanoning, or AUs, but the idea of playing with gender identity and pulling it off as cute, especially by cis or straight people is skeevy and at best, ignorant, at worst, fetishistic. A woman in two parts: sweet Spring, the perfume of roses blooming from the heart of her, wildflower honey tone, and cruel Winter, the carmine of her lips turning morbid with fanged smile, poison steeped words cocked and primed. An ode to a goddess who is all cycles and rebirth, manipulating herself to be everyone’s dream of spring, only to reveal a heart of desolate winter; she wears both flowers and sin equally well.

EVE. God’s beloved creation, the world’s first woman, crafted from flesh and bone of man — by man’s account, a woman who had it all: paradise, the love of a God, the adoration of a husband — and the first to gamble it all for knowledge. By any and all means, Proserpina can relate: what good is having it all without the fear of losing it all? Sugar tastes all the sweeter after acid, as victory is to loss. She embraces the implications of her middle name with pride — if it were her in Eve’s place, she’d have eaten the apple whole. And so, she is what she is called: temptation’s mistress, creation divine, agony’s sweet kiss.

BLACK. The most noble and ancient House of Black. Toujours Pur. Always pure. It’s a mantra that’s been repeated over and over, all but branded into every recess of her brain. She is very much the pinnacle of her house’s ideal — dark hair and romantic features, sharp in all the wrong ways and beautiful in all the right ones. Beautiful, empty beasts, does the House of Black raise, and she is no exception.

Sexuality: “Bisexual” — She hardly likes to define such things as pleasure, which to her, is without boundaries: and as Oscar Wilde once wrote: “To define is to limit.” She doesn’t mind men, both in that she won’t begrudge them their presence, and that she barely heeds them past a certain point, all at once — but she does enjoy toying with everyone and anyone. Simply put, she enjoys cutting her teeth on the fractured egos of men, and enjoys lavishing her attention and affection on the lovelier things in life, namely, women.

Hogwarts House: Slytherin ( expounded upon in headcanons. )

Head canons:

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. A firm believer in the idea that if you have the information, you hold the cards, she was a little bit of a dilemma for the hat during her sorting. Despite the very firm and sure Slytherin she eventually got, the hat debated the merits of sorting her into Ravenclaw — purely for the half-starved approach she takes to all things learnable, gorging herself on knowledge, insatiably learning. She was always near top if not top of her classes in Hogwarts, but her quest for knowledge hardly stopped at classroom limits; any tidbit about anyone was considered useful and interesting, and stored away for further examination. After all, you can’t be a mastermind if you’ve no mind of your own.

POWER IS POWER. And yet, ultimately, she was sorted into Slytherin. Knowledge is nothing if you don’t know how to convert it, how to wield it, weaponize it. She may share traits with Ravenclaw in her pursuit of knowledge, but rarely, if ever, is she satisfied with leaving her knowledge in theory, in abstract — no, knowledge in practice is what delights her most. A well uttered spell, or a difficult non-verbal cast, or even the right whisper in the right ear — knowledge is nothing but a whimsical theory if not put to use.

It’s this inborn cunning and ambition that surely sees her into Slytherin.

HEIR UNAPPARENT. The elder sister to a single brother, she hardly is slated to inherit much more than the Black name, although she is privy to the deep wallets it comes with, until, at least, she’s married off into some other pure-blooded family. And yet, it was soon apparent to her as it was to her parents that her brother could barely hold a candle to her own mantle of manipulation and conquest. And so the deal was struck after her graduation, perhaps to both her father’s dismay and begrudging pride: he would turn a blind eye to how she conducted affairs and who she consorted with, and she would manage the Black empire from the shadow of her younger brother, ever watchful, and ever-present to insure that their fortune never diminished, even as he ruled in name. It barely bothered her; the shadows were where she best operated — far less scrutiny. After all, what was one more puppet to her collection? Aelius would appreciate the company, she was sure.

She’s been sent to New York to scope out the possibility of expanding business over to the Americas, and it’s a rush, gambling with the family name and fortune. After winning for so long, she imagines failure must taste sweet — the only flavor she’s never quite sampled, only knowledge she’s not quite accrued — and that subsequent victories would be even more so.

GRACE OF BIRTH. Proserpina was born on May 22nd, making her a Gemini. Gemini’s are witty, charming and resourceful, but commonly reviled for being two-faced. Known for fun wordplay, Proserpina takes that trait to another level, subtle barbs laced across the flat of her tongue, sharp enough to flay the flesh off any unsuspecting person who gets too close. She incites and thus is insightful; she wields words as one might a sword or a wand.

The twins Castor and Pollux rule over Gemini, and so represents the inherent duality of her — both serpent and flower, both spring and winter. Intelligent and adaptable, Proserpina can read the room and anybody in her line of sight like no other. Listen closely, and people will tell you how to conquer them.

STYLE, NOT FASHION. Proserpina rarely cleaves to society’s fashion standards; this is to say she is not fashionable, no, never one to be influenced when she can be the one influencing, but also to say she is never out of style. Expensive cuts of jewelry are commonly found tastefully adorning her figure, as are luxurious cuts of mink and ermine, and dark swathes of silk and velvet cling lovingly to her like a second shadow.

WANDLORE. Yew wood, dragon heartstring, 12 ½ inches, pliable — an unusual wand by all means: deceptively dainty, elegant, light in coloration, but a powerhouse when it comes to spellwork.

Yew — a rare wood, with a rumored predilection for the dark, and a notorious dislike for mediocrity and timid owners, hewn from a tree that is all at once long-lived and life-sapping with its toxins. It’s a contradiction wrapped in shadows, perfect for her, by any stretch of the imagination. That said, Proserpina tries to minimize usage of her poisonous wand, powerful though it may be.

Dragon Heartstring — known for being a particularly strong and flamboyant core, it’s quick to learn, much like its owner. And much like her, the wand derives its power from the core, able to master spells quickly and executing them without hesitance.

Pliable — wands are known to be extensions of their owners, and whilst stubborn and inflexible in her ideals, Proserpina is undoubtedly adaptable, always landing on her feet, no matter the situation. Such is the life of the eternal victor.

HIGHEST HEIGHTS, DEEPEST DEPTHS. Proserpina’s patronus is a fox: naturally cunning and brilliantly charismatic. People with foxes as their patronus are known to be observant, ambitious, and manipulative. Silver tongued, and willing to use other such skills to their own benefit, the fox often gets their way. It’s fitting for her, is it not? People watch as the fleet footed vixen erupts from the tip of her wand, wiling around the crowd, curling around her heels.

Her boggart happens to be herself — her, but different in several subtle ways, almost imperceptible to any but herself. She sees the wear and tear on her clothes, the hollow of her cheeks, the fear in her own eyes. Her boggart is herself, but ruined. A foolish woman fears nothing, a cowardly woman everything, and a wise woman, herself — secure in the knowledge that nothing will ruin her more than herself.

CONNECTIONS.

FOND // FAWNED. She remembers her first impression of the girl: a little fawn, wide-eyed and on tenuous legs, walking as if she was haunting the halls, quiet as a mouse. It was something endearing, to watch as she grew into the loveliness bequeathed to her. Back then, she was wildly off limits — purely something to keep a keen eye over, a budding flower in the greenhouse that needed the pests swatted away, needed space to grow — but recently, her little doe’s found a voice and a blooming bit of courage, and has come to play. And who is she to deny pretty girls that which they desire?

KINGMAKER. Some people are socially adept, good at reading any room they walk into, good at reading people — and others, not so much. Those who don’t know how to rule shouldn’t, in her honest opinion, but if he wants so badly to play king, then she’ll let him — so long as he never forgets who’s granted him the throne. She plays by chess’ rules: kings are the weakest pieces on the board, mere figureheads. Everyone knows queens are much more valuable — but if he wants to take the flak for the decisions she makes, who is she to turn away a blank check?

HEARTBREAKER. Every connection that Proserpina has ever made serves a purpose, be it for social advancement, business connections, or even simply for pleasure, there is always an underlying motive that serves in her best interest. Her relationship with Genevieve was no different — another bridge to cross or burn, and she thought she was prepared. Not only prepared, but scared to proceed without burning: the closer the relationship got to not purely serving her best interest, the more control seemed to flee from her grasps. So she broke it off, expecting never to look back, and yet as Orpheus could not tear his eyes from Eurydice, a backwards glance was all it took to doom her once more: confirmation that she wouldn’t be able to help herself should the opportunity present itself.

In Character Paragraph:

She sighs when she lands in the fireplace, brushing nonexistent floo powder off her coat, stepping out into the familiar sitting room, looking for any signs of movement, searching for wards. There is neither scurry nor spell to be found, so she continues out on her way, heels clicking ostensibly loud against the marble tiling of the floor; usually, that’s the way she likes it — to be heralded before her arrival — but she so enjoys catching people off guard, at their truest, if one will, when she has business to attend to, so she slips the heels off and makes her way down the halls of the manor to the study on silent feet. The floor is shockingly cold against the pads of her feet, but it bothers her not — not when she’s single-minded in following the dark hallways of the house to the only point of illumination.

The study door is cracked open slightly, and she pushes in, meticulously careless, letting the door swing out and ricochet off the adjacent wall, eyes on the figure pacing the study. The crashing of the door startles him, and he whips around, blue hex warming the tip of his wand and then slamming into the doorframe next to her head; she turns to see the miniature crater blasted into the expensive wooden frame, and it sends her heart flying with adrenaline, even as she turns back to the man. She could easily repair the damage done with a wave of her fingers, so simple is the spell, but she hardly wants to afford the man any measure of convenience.

“You missed,” she notes instead, stalking closer to him, hips swaying, smile cocked; she, the predator, he, her unwitting prey.

“Merlin, Proserpina,” he swears crossly. “You can’t come sneaking into my house in the dead of night— this isn’t a joke. If a hex hits you, it will hurt.”

“Do you promise it will?” she asks archly, craning forward as he leans back.

He doesn’t dignify her with a response, just turns from her.

“Fine,” she dismisses with a sigh, waving a hand vaguely, moving once more to perch on top of his desk, errantly pushing stacks of scrolls and tomes to clear a spot for herself, uncaring of the mess she makes. “I’m here for business anyway, not pleasure.”

“Then you should have owled,” he says coldly, his back insistently to her, as if in hopes of dissuading her stay. He peers at the spines of all the books lining the shelves, eyes flicking over each worn title with a nervous celerity that tells her he’s not actually looking at them.

She takes advantage of this lapse in attention, shuffles through the papers on his desk; this prompts his concern, and he turns around. He starts with long strides over to her, a warning on his lips, a frown brewing in the purse of his lips — but not before she finds what she’s looking for. She holds the envelope between her index and middle finger, displaying the wax seal of her family, tilting her head to the right, unimpressed. “I did,” she drawls, impressing her point further most unnecessarily. “I don’t take well to being ignored.”

He moves to grab the letter, and she jerks it away from his grasp, raising her eyebrows in reproach.

“No, no, darling,” she coos, all sucrose condescension. “This letter was a limited time sort of offer, and I’m afraid my patience has quite expired since.”

Silence swells, stifling, between them, as she holds his gaze, and he hers. He doesn’t want to back down, that much is evident — and yet, it becomes increasingly apparent who has the upper hand, and it’s with a sigh that he relents. “So now…?” He asks, swallowing concealed distress.

“Now,” she purrs, contented. “You take what comes. If I say jump, you ask—“

“—I ask how high,” he finishes, disgusted.

“Don’t interrupt me,” she snaps, a voice of poison, honey, and ice, before amending herself with a smile.

“And if I say no?” He hedges, cautious, watching her measuredly.

“Oh!” She exclaims, before dissolving into delighted laughter. “Did I say this letter was an offer?” She asks, revlon red lips bursting with faux-incredulity. “How absentminded of me. I should have said this letter prompted an offer from you, if you’d read and responded in timely fashion, of course — but then at least you could’ve had the reins on making the offer, no? Well, tell you what: why don’t you take a look for yourself, my dear?”

He takes the envelope slowly, gingerly, watching her like he thinks she’ll jerk it away again — she lets it slip from her fingers easily. He reads the first line in alarm, eyes flashing to her face, and she winks. He reads the rest voraciously, before peering at the included photos, a subtle sneer on his lips as his own movements taunt him from the frame; she waits, humming lightly, slipping her heels back on — she can tell he won’t last much longer.

“Still want to say no? I can assure you, I’ve been very instrumental in keeping this from the police and the press.”

“I wouldn’t dare dream of it,” he answers, a forced smile put upon his lips. “What do you need from me?”

“Oh, I don’t need anything from you,” she says in turn, tapping a finger against her smile contemplatively. “Yet. No, today’s little drop in is just to make sure that when I do call, you’ll be ready to respond. You will be, won’t you?”

“As if I had a choice,” he says through his teeth — half grimace, half smile.

“Honey,” she says in mock sympathy, hand wrapping around his bicep, bottom lip jutting out in a pout, before it melts into patronization, baring her teeth in a half-hearted approximation of a grin. “We always have a choice.”

She slides off his desk, landing with a neat click of her heels on marble, already sauntering away, already uninterested in the defeated man left in ruins behind her. “No need to see me out,” she calls over the clicking of her heels, not even bothering to turn to address him, conquest grin on her lips for no one but the dark in front of her to see. “I know my way.”

Thriving in an Economic Bubble during Anarchy

15. The Christian Succession – Navigating Chaos without a Compass except God

Executive Summary:

Crossing the Atlantic in the 15th century was done without the aid of a compass so boat captains dragged a rope off the stern to guide them in a straight line while navigating/ setting their course by the stars at night. In effect, they measured their direction by checking progress from where they had been. That is also the benefit of understanding history and why Marxists destroy historical landmarks a society uses to measure their direction and progress. It creates chaos.

As those in public office today destroy our historical markers, attempt to force Americans to behave in a manner opposite to their desire, and treat Americans with contempt, confusion is leading to chaos. Is the accelerant in this volatile mix a fraudulent election that put in elective office folks who do not reflect the desires, hopes and dreams of the majority? College football stadiums across the country the last two Saturdays have displayed in dramatic fashion a disconnect which will get worse until it is resolved. We may see a constitutional crisis.

Meanwhile, the China Evergrande situation deteriorates. A Bloomberg article stated that in addition to the $300 Billion in Bonds, Evergrande also owes approximately $147 Billion to suppliers and trades PLUS 1.5 million home buyers their deposits. Evergrande has an estimated 200,000 employees but the ripple effects will impact an estimated additional 3 million jobs with suppliers, etc. The article also estimated that Evergrande would have an impact equivalent 10 Lehman Brothers. The ripple effects will hit the USA. Cinch up your saddle.

Background:

An email from my Republican Party County Committee informed me that early voting starts September 17 and urged me to vote early because last November folks that waited to vote on election day were often told that they had already voted. Do you think that just happened to Republican voters? Vote fraud here in Virginia? Yep.

After four years of unrelenting abuse and disruption did the DMs underestimate the number of fraudulent votes needed to steal the election from Trump forcing an error when they had to scurry to complete their plan? Something resulted in perhaps 10,000 affidavits signed by Americans of both parties, genders, and races who were appalled at the fraud they saw.

That exposure led to a series of events which will begin to bear fruit with the report on the Arizona Senate’s audit of Maricopa County. A separate canvass in Arizona has already determined that approximately 300,000 fraudulent votes were counted. I believe seven states have now announced their intent to audit the 2020 election. A petition is being circulated by Arizona State Senator Wendy Rodgers to DE-Certify the Arizona election.

Viewed from the perspective that a thread of logic exists, the last five years were the crescendo of at least a fifteen-year effort of events designed to set the stage for November 2020. Fifteen years of abuse capped with nonsensical “mandates” by the current administration has led Americans to display amazing disrespect for Biden. The first Saturday of college football I saw three streaming videos of college stadiums “saluting” Biden. This past weekend I counted videos of eight stadiums “saluting” Biden capping a week of some amazing similar events.

The disconnect between American “leaders” and the average American citizen is approaching a truly dangerous level. Equally fascinating is the fact that the DMs in Congress continue to pursue legislation that is out of step with the desires of the Average American as they champion “the largest tax increase in history” as an accomplishment along with CRT aka racial hatred.

Add to the toxic mix the discontent with Biden’s retreat from Afghanistan which:

1. Armed muslim terrorists with $85 BILLION Dollars of our military equipment (described by Victor Hanson as the financial equivalent of 7 new nuclear powered aircraft carriers);

2. Both showed China, Iran, North Korea, and the other evil actors in the globe that the USA is in retreat and our allies that we are undependable.

3. Abandoned American citizens leaving their recovery from Afghanistan to private citizens thus demonstrating Biden’s complete disregard for them.

4. Showed our military leaders supported this absolute disaster, no resignations nor firings.

Economic Forecast:

The major event you need to watch is Evergrande. One analyst estimated the impact of the coming Evergrande default to be the equivalent of 10 Lehman Brothers. It is the ripple effects, the ripple effects, the ripple effects! Similar to the early days of Lehman Bros, no one is asking “What will be the ripple effects of Evergrande?”. The American stock markets have ignored it so far.

In the last week, there are three other items buried in the news are enormously significant:

1. The Dallas Fed President, Robert Kaplan, announced that he would be selling his stock in 27 companies valued at over $1M each and putting the funds into cash and/or a managed stock fund to “address criticism he has received”. But consider this – a member of the very small group of folks in the country with the most control over our economy is moving his money out of the stock market into cash, in whole or part.

2. In another report The Fed is interested in replacing our paper currency with digital currency because it will enable them to employ negative interest rates more effectively.

3. Meanwhile, reports from China suggest internal turmoil including a possible “purge” of the CCP which may be President Xi eliminating opponents. Xi’s threats against Taiwan include the frequent invasion of Taiwan’s air space by as many as 19 planes including bombers. Practice runs? Economic turmoil?

Both the Reagan and Trump administrations proved that slashing taxes, decreasing the size of government, and providing tax incentives to build the American manufacturing economy made us more secure while increasing the size of the American economic pie allowing more assistance to those who need it. America prospered under the hand of God because our country enjoyed the combination of Christianity, capitalism, and democracy.

In contrast, Biden and the DMs have us on a path to Marxism which fails because it everyone is a victim and so the pie needs to be redivided. That is a self-destructive exercise that decreases the size of the economic pie. Everyone loses except the “Elites”.

Add to that the increased risk of China’s economy experiencing a financial panic and devaluing its currency as a ripple effect of the Evergrande collapse. The Fed would either delay tapering their Quantitative Easing (QE) and would have to increase QE which will devalue the Dollar leading to higher inflation and creating a downward spiral of our economy. Our economic decline will be worsened by Biden having made us dependent on OPEC for oil, forcing us to more expensive and less reliable “Green Energy”, an unsupportable increase in our national debt plus dramatically raising taxes. That combination is known as “Stagflation”. Get ready for UGLY.

Pray that our Lord and Savior raises up and protects the Patriots that demand forensic audits of the 2020 election in every state. Honest elections are the fulcrum of our American experiment. It is not vengeance to demand honesty and that everyone play by the same laws. Men make plans, but God ALWAYS wins. Every portfolio should contain some cash and a great piece of land remains The Best investment long term.

Now, onto the rules.

Types of writing:

- Headcanons (5 characters MAX). These are typical, very straightforward. Bulletpoints that consist of content. - Scenarios (2 characters MAX - exception OHSHC all). These are more story-based and will not exceed too long. I would compare them to drabbles somewhat, but I will not cut them too short. - Drabbles (3 characters MAX). Short in length, will range around 1,100 words. These will primarily be based on prompts. - Imagines (1 character MAX). Long works that will be story-based. Number of words will not be ranged, and details will be very much there.

What I WILL NOT write:

- Non-con. I do not stand for anything of the sort, and I will ask that anybody requesting refrain from requesting anything of this sort. This is not only an uncomfortable topic, but an illegal one, and while illegal topics are not off the board, this one is. - Explicit sexual content. I will write for suggestive content, but I reserve the right to deny any of this type. While this may change in the future, I do not feel comfortable writing this kind of content at the moment. This is primarily reserved for any requests that state anything in regards to kinks, sexual acts, etc.. (If you want something suggestive, please indicate.) - Too many characters. If you see above, I have marked how many characters I will allow per writing type request. Anymore than the max number will be denied. - Incest. Do I have to explain why I won’t write this type of content? This is disgusting and outright disturbing, and I would like to keep my mind out of that realm. - Omegaverse. Too in depth, too time consuming. I have a lot of other activities, and if you want a specific request, I will do the best that I can in regards to research. Otherwise, this particular request has an extensive history and intake of knowledge that I logically do not have time to fully uncover. - Underage relationships. This is unlawful and disgusting, and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. (This includes teacher and student relationships.) - Abusive relationships. This whole topic is something that is very disturbing and very much scary. It is also for a primary of the character being an abuser. I will not write the characters as abusers in relationships due to respect for the creators and the readers. - Character x character. This is meant for direct request. Unless this is a small detail in a different request, this is not going to be permitted. Ship who you want, but I do not write explicitly for ships.

What I WILL write:

- Suggestive content. All characters will be aged up if underage, and will not go into (hopefully) too extreme detail. I will include the content under cut for reader discretion. - Sibling/parent figure. This is specifically for a platonic/guardian-based relationship. This will not include any romance, but rather revolve around the familial aspect. - AUs. Though I still reserve the right to deny certain AUs, I am not against any of these being requested. In fact, I love AUs, and writing them can be so much fun. - Violence. This is going to be worrying, but if violence is requested, I am fine with including it. This is going to be done in detail (if the request calls for it), and will be indicated with a disclaimer at the beginning of the requested piece. - Angst. This is limited to certain things, of course, but if you want to ask for an angsty piece, go ahead. - Mental disorders/medical conditions/body specifications. These can be very messy, but I will do research to fulfill your request the best way I can. If I do manage to misconstrue the topic, don’t hesitate to tell me. (I know that this is a sensitive topic, so I want to be able to get it right.) - Horror. This is where I will be willing to bend a few things, typically for yandere plots and things of a similar vein. I love to write this kind of thing, but this also means that the limits will be pushed, so if you want to request this, proceed with caution.

NOTE: All of my works will be written with gender neutral default, so if you want a male or female reader, then specify.

EMERGENCY REQUESTS:

This is for the moments when you need something written. Generally follows the same circumstances as what is written above, but there are a few differences.

- Response time. This is going to be within the span of a week. It is a slight long shot, but since I am unaware of the urgency of the requester’s request, this will be the general time span in which this will be written. This is subject to change over time, though. - Request limits. There will be none for things of this sort, but I will have to cap them off if there are too many coming in. I don’t want to do so, but it will have to happen if things get too overwhelming. (Again, this is only in the situation that these requests become so frequent that they becoming overwhelming.) I want to make sure that these pieces are good and well-thought out so the requester(s) can enjoy them and find comfort in them, and I can’t do that well when overwhelmed. - Labeling. When requesting for an emergency request, please label it as such. I don’t want to lump things of this sort in with the others since the requester may want it as soon as possible, and the regular requests typically tend to take me a week or more to write.

NOTE: All other rules above apply to this as well, though I would suggest that you read them through and decide what you want since the more characters, the longer the time to write it will take.

Ask Game: Commentary on a scene you’re proud of?

No one asked, but I wanted to do these, so… ^.^;

What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.

I don’t know that I’m actually proud of this, but it was fun to write, and people enjoyed it. ^.^;

The below excerpt is from Chapter One of Let Your Walls Down. Ladybug and Chat Noir are having a getting-to-know-you chat on a rooftop after a bad day.

“What are your favourites?” she prompted, trying to keep the sad tone out of her voice.

“Don’t laugh,” he preempted. “Charlotte and Anne Brontë. Not Emily.”

Ladybug frowned. “Aren’t their books kind of…” She pursed her lips.

“Girly?” he completed. “No. They’re human-y. I like human-y. It’s part of the reason why I love Jane Austen and Victor Hugo so much. Charles Dickens too. Their characters feel real, like I could just bump into them on the street.”

Ladybug nodded, gaining a new appreciation for her partner. She could almost imagine him curled up in a window seat on a rainy day, pillow hugged to his chest, black-rimmed glasses slipping down his nose as he lost himself in imaginary worlds.

“Why not Emily Brontë?” she thought to ask.

Chat’s nose scrunched up in distaste. “I actively disliked eighty-seven percent of her characters and spent the whole of Wuthering Heights hoping bad things would happen to them. In that respect, the ending was rather satisfying, but the book was a slog, and it wasn’t even like my dislike of the characters was cathartic.”

Ladybug nodded as if she could relate. “I’ll make sure not to read it, then.”

“If you’re going to read anything, read Pride and Prejudice or Emma. They’re like trashy romance novels, only everyone will think you’re smart and sophisticated for reading them,” he chuckled.

“What are you reading right now?” She wondered, genuinely starting to take an interest in this getting-to-know-you game.

“The Three Musketeers again,” he replied nonchalantly. “I love Alexandre Dumas, so Musketeers is an old standby. I prefer The Count of Monte Cristo, though.”

“Do you ever read ‘trashy’ modern fiction?” she had to wonder. “Or is it all smarty-pants, five-hundred-page novels?”

“The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich,” he snickered, a pink stain quickly spreading across his cheeks. He covered his face with his hands, unwilling to look at her as he confessed, “And vampire smut.”

“Vampire…smut,” she repeated as if the syllables were in a foreign language.

He nodded, daring to peek at the shocked expression on her rapidly-reddening face. “I have to get it from my one friend and sneak it into the house as if it were drugs or PopTarts or something. I pay her back in manicures and massages, so the arrangement works—she actually thinks my preferences are adorable and doesn’t make fun of me too much—but…yeah. Vampire smut.”

There was an awkward silence.

A thought occurred to him: “…I feel like I shouldn’t have told you this about me until after we were married.”

“No,” she rushed to assure. “It’s just…I’m trying to reconcile your lame puns, your family situation, serious nineteenth century classic literature, and vampire smut. I’m not judging; I’m just…processing. I’ll judge you after I actually read some of this vampire smut. What’s the author’s name?”

“Seriously?” His mind raced, trying to come up with a series that he wouldn’t be too embarrassed to have the girl he loved reading.

She shrugged, meeting his eyes. “Seriously. I find the concept intriguing.”

“Uh…well…The Southern Vampire Mysteries are pretty mainstream, if you want to try that,” he suggested.

She nodded. “…New topic?”

There is just so much that I still find amusing about this almost one year later. XD

First off, these are (almost entirely) my real-life book opinions. Most of the time the opinions stated by my characters are not my own opinions because I sit down and think about what the characters would actually think and feel instead of just putting my words in their mouths. Most of the time, they think and feel things differently than I do. This instance is slightly different.

I totally get the vibe that Adrien and I have similar reading tastes. I believed this from the start, and seeing The Three Musketeers come up on his Instagram only confirmed it for me. I figure he’s had a lot of time by himself shut up in his room, so reading was Adrien’s escape before Chat Noir and school. I doubt Gabriel would let him have books deemed “unworthy” of an Agreste’s consumption, so that probably means Adrien read mostly the classics.

Yes, that is my actual opinion of Wuthering Heights. I’m sorry if you liked that book. I didn’t. I really, really didn’t. I also really love Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Anne Brontë, Victor Hugo, and Alexandre Dumas. I haven’t actually read a lot by Charles Dickens, but I loved A Tale of Two Cities (Madame Defarge for the win) and plan to read more by him.

I think Adrien in particular would enjoy these authors because they do such a good job of bringing their characters to life. By the end of the book, you feel like you really know these people. They’re like close friends. At least, that’s how they feel to me. I’m kind of an introvert, so I have more fictional friends than friends in real life, and I think Adrien would feel like the characters were his friends too before he had Plagg and real friends to interact with.

“They’re human-y. I like human-y.” - I like this line. I feel like it accurately captures what I wanted to get across about the universality of human truths learned from reading something someone else has written. Little pieces of ourselves get embedded in our works, so reading someone’s work is like getting a glimpse at their inner life. I think books are an experience that transcends time period, gender, or social class because they contain truths that apply to all of us humans.

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich is actually my best friend from high school’s favourite series. I’ve read most of the books. They’re ridiculous and fluffy and irreverent. They’re good when you just need to laugh really hard and not take life too seriously and observe that there’s someone out there doing the adulting thing significantly worse than you are. I mean, you certainly haven’t gotten any cars blown up lately. Obviously, you’re doing all right. I mean...it could definitely be worse; you could be Stephanie.

They’re not “high brow” literature, and they’re sort of formulaic, but they’re great entertainment. I mean, Adrien and I can’t read “smarty-pants, five-hundred-page novels” all the time. ^.^

I’ve never read vampire smut, and I can’t say that I’m interested in giving it a chance any time soon. ^.^; A girl I studied abroad in Costa Rica with liked The Southern Vampire Mysteries (the book series that the TV show True Blood is based on), though. She was talking about it and said I wouldn’t like it because there was too much sex for me, but I made a mental note and used the series as an age-inappropriate book series a character was reading in the novel I wrote as my Senior Honors Thesis.

When I was writing this, I was thinking that I needed something embarrassing and seemingly out of character for Adrien to be reading, and the idea just jumped into my mind, so...yeah. Vampire smut. ^.^;
