Hello, everyone! Long time, no see.

I know it has been quite a long time, but I’m here to share some great news with you! My old beloved fic The Dark Lady has officially been turned into A NOVEL! I mean, I’ve spent so long editing it, rewriting and actually making it into a historical romance that I can barely believe it was born in ao3, many years ago.

it is fascinating going from queer historical romances written by people like kj charles who have been thoroughly steeped in classic romance novels and mills & boon (if i remember correctly, kjc used to be an m&b editor), but who are deeply concerned with things like consent and nuance and negotiated power dynamics in their books, to actual original flavour heterosexual mills & boon historicals, where it has never occurred to any of the characters to interrogate a power dynamic and consent is... dicey

(don't get me wrong i don't mean to imply that kjc only writes Healthy, Sensible relationships. she writes unhinged disasters where you're like "okay you're terrible and perfect for each other, never involve anyone else in this, thanks". but it's done in a way that doesn't fall into simplistic and unexamined class/status/gender dynamics, and instead feels like a choice those characters are knowingly making bc they are, as mentioned, unhinged disasters)

i can see in these books the roots of the books i've been reading for the last few years but these haven't yet grown beyond the roots. and what's really fascinating to me is that these are like, 2020 releases. i'm not talking 1980s romance here. this is from three years ago and it's all Big Strong Man with his Big Strong Man Hands forcibly kisses Delicate Noble Lady but it's okay because she liked it. Oh No We Must Marry Because The King Said So and he's so strong and tall and manly and she's so slender and delicate. she is swooning off her horse but he's caught her. he's inflamed with passion and he's sexily overpowering her. she doesn't know how beautiful she is and he's tormented by his dead family because he think it's his fault and he needs to avenge them. etc

it's also funny because the romance is very much centre stage and the plot is usually some absurd contrivance designed purely to engineer whatever arranged or pretend marriage is needed, but i find myself entirely uninvested in the romance and much more concerned with a random secondary character's absurd thirteenth century castle inheritance tangle. but the author is never actually interested in the inheritance tangle unless someone can get married about it. kind of tragic to be honest

#the thing is i am interested in character-led small-scale historical fiction #stories about someone living their life and experiencing some character development in the fourteenth centuey #i'm not that interested in the big battle-focuses cornwell-style historical novels #but low stakes and character focused seems rare in histfic unless it's romance #néide has opinions about books

Romance fiction recs

I need a good read. Looking for original novels with romance plots that are good. Historical romance a bonus but not immune to other categories. I love pining, mutual angst, enemies to friends to lovers. Basically if you’re a braime shipper and adore slow burns and neither knowing the other has so much feelings for the other but they somehow can’t emote and talk, I want that. Pleeeaaaase help. I’m tired of buying unsatisfactory stories. Recommend me your favourite books please.

I have several posts on this and a glitter text gif but let me just say it again: Joan of Kent was born at the earliest in September 1326 and at the latest September 1328 (her birthday was on or shortly before Michaelmas, the year is unclear). In 1338, Joan could only have been 12 years old and quite possibly hadn't yet reached her 12th birthday when she married Holland. Holland was born in 1314 or 1315, i.e. he would have been around twice her age. No wonder her family was "hostile" to the marriage! That "powerful draw" Holland has would see him on a sex offenders registry.

Either Chadwick has aged Joan up like a tacky romance novelist loosely inspired by history, she didn’t bother to work out how old Joan actually was or she’s like “yeah totes fine nothing to see here Margaret Beaufort was the norm” when every serious medievalist will tell you that Margaret Beaufort was not the norm. Please. No more "preteen and early teenage girls could fall in true love with grown ass men in the Middle Ages and it's completely fine, nothing rapey about that."

#if she gets sexually harassed by other men so that we 'know' holland is the right man for her... we riot #(it's happened like. 2 or 3 times? emma campion did it AND gave us psychotic black prince killing puppies when he was 6)#chadwick is supposed to be writing a trio of novels focused on joan and katherine swynford being romantic heroines and girlbosses #merylstreepgroundbreaking.gif #as much as i love them i loathe the basic Romance Heroine™ characterisation both of them get #(also chadwick posted an excerpt on her fb where joan bitches about montagu being so young. he's her age or 1-2 years younger)#oh god we're getting 'actually historians are confused and joan was actually born in 1316 because my psychic said so' aren't we #(chadwick consults psychics for her novels apparently)#text posts #joan of kent #historical fiction venting
