Raising Chaos.

Chiar was alone. 
He stood in the field of grass, tall strands brushing against his hands.
The sun beat down without mercy but he kept Syl’s jacket on. It seemed wrong to take it off, despite the blood stains. 
Syl. 
Syl was gone. 
Chiar exhaled, blue shadows swirling out of his mouth, clinging to his skin. 
Syl was dead. 
Chiar's world fell apart around him. Underneath his skin, electricity surged in time with his racing heartbeat. Taking the shape of blue shadows, it warped around him, buzzing quietly. Waiting. 
He hated it. 
He looked down at his hands, at the blue nails and the darker shadows that wrapped around his fingers. 
He hated it. 
The hatred and the sorrow and the pain and the sunshine pounded down on him until Chiar dropped to his knees. The dirt smelled sharply of sunlight and Chair buried his hands in it until he could no longer see the pulsing light. Unlike sunlight, the dirt didn’t burn him. He wished it would.
“Never again,” he said. “Never, never, never, never…” The words didn’t need to make sense. He just needed to say them.
“I don’t want to be this way.” The statement sounded like a plea.  
The grass waved slightly but gave no answer. 
Chiar didn’t feel the tears on his face. No one saw them. No one knew how the cyptid cried silently for what he had lost. He cried with shaking shoulders and bent head, begging for mercy that he had never received. 
He had been human once.
Then he had Syl. And now Syl was gone. 
All he had was the blue light inside him. The pulsing, angry light that burned all it touched. 
“I don’t want it!” Chiar screamed the words. “Take it back!” He doubled over until his forehead touched the dirt. He sobbed into the unforgiving ground. The words were muffled, almost unrecognizable. “I want Syl back.”
There was no answer. 
There was no mercy. Mercy was for humans.
The tears dried on Chiar’s face, but he did not move. Something cold twisted inside him– an idea– forming against the electric burning. 
“I will never use it again.” 
The words sounded stupid and hollow. He repeated them, but that only sounded worse. The intention, however, remained. 
“Never again.” 
Chiar sat upright, taking a deep breath. Blue shadows rose off his skin and deepened to the color of night. The light trembled beneath his skin, burning at him, eating and tearing at his bones. He could feel it. He could always feel it. 
Chiar surged. One last time. 
It burned through him before he released it into the ground. The blue shadows vanished.
He was left feeling empty, Syl’s jacket weighing heavy on his shoulders. 
Chiar had never been more alone.

the rhythmic pulse of music filled the opulent halls of stark tower, the vibrant lights casting kaleidoscopic patterns across the dance floor. tony stark's parties were legendary, a whirlwind of glamour, extravagance, and hedonism. yet amidst the glittering throng of guests, bucky barnes found himself feeling distinctly out of place.
clad in a sleek suit that hugged his muscular frame, bucky stood at the edge of the room, his steel-blue eyes scanning the crowd with a mix of wariness and apprehension. his grip tightened around the crystal tumbler in his hand as he watched the scene unfold before him.
amidst the sea of revelers, his gaze inevitably found its way to you, the object of his affection and the reason for his unease. you moved with effortless grace, your laughter ringing out like a melody amidst the voices.
bucky's heart clenched painfully in his chest as he watched you interact with the other guests, a swarm of admirers vying for your attention. he knew he had no right to feel this way—no claim over you—but the sight of other men hovering around you like vultures sent a surge of possessiveness coursing through his veins.
"hey there, buckaroo," a voice interrupted his thoughts, and bucky turned to see tony stark himself sauntering up to him, a knowing smirk playing on his lips.
"enjoying the party?" tony asked, his eyes twinkling with mischief and sipping on his own glass of champagne.
bucky forced a tight smile, the tension in his jaw betraying his true feelings. "yeah, it's a real blast," he replied tersely, his gaze flickering back to where you were standing across the room.
tony followed his line of sight and chuckled knowingly. "ah, i see. keeping an eye on y/n, are we?" he teased, nudging bucky playfully.
bucky bristled at the implication, his jaw clenching in frustration. "she's just a friend," he muttered through gritted teeth, though the words felt hollow even to his own ears.
tony raised an eyebrow, his expression one of mock disbelief. "right, just a friend," he echoed, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "tell me, barnes, do you always look at your friends like you want to devour them whole?"
bucky's cheeks flushed crimson at the implication, a surge of guilt mingling with the simmering jealousy in his chest. he opened his mouth to protest, but before he could utter a word, a commotion erupted across the room.
a group of boisterous guests had gathered around you, their laughter ringing out like a chorus of bells. bucky's heart plummeted as he watched a particularly persistent admirer step too close for comfort, his hand lingering on your lower back.
without a second thought, bucky was striding across the room, his jaw set in a steely resolve. he reached you in a matter of seconds, his presence looming over the other man like a thundercloud.
"is there a problem here?" bucky's voice was low and dangerous, a warning laced with thinly veiled menace. winter soldier coming through for a second.
the other man recoiled at the sudden intrusion, his eyes widening in surprise. "n-no, no problem at all," he stammered, taking a hasty step back.
bucky's gaze never wavered from yours as he gently took your hand in his, his touch warm and reassuring. "come on," he said softly, his voice a soothing balm amidst the chaos of the party. "let's get out of here."
you nodded wordlessly, your heart pounding in your chest as bucky led you away from the crowd, his protective presence a shield against the world outside.
as you slipped away into the quiet solitude of the night, the tangled web of jealousy and desire that had ensnared you both seemed to unravel, leaving only the fragile threads of something deeper—a connection that transcended words and boundaries, binding you together in ways neither of you could fully comprehend.
the cool night air greeted bucky and you as the two of you stepped out onto the balcony, the cacophony of the party fading into the distance behind you. bucky's grip on your hand remained firm but gentle, a silent reassurance in the darkness.
"i'm sorry," you murmured, breaking the tense silence that hung between them. "i didn't mean to cause a scene back there."
bucky shook his head, his expression softening as he turned to face you. "you didn't do anything wrong, angel," he replied earnestly, his thumb tracing soothing circles on the back of your hand. "i just couldn't stand seeing you surrounded by those assholes."
a soft smile tugged at the corners of your lips, gratitude warming your heart at his words. "thank you, bucky," you whispered, your voice barely above a whisper. "for always looking out for me.
bucky's heart skipped a beat at the sincerity in your eyes, a rush of warmth flooding his chest. "always," he vowed, his voice filled with quiet determination.
for a long moment, the two of you stood together in comfortable silence, the only sound the gentle rustle of the wind against the city skyline and faded music coming from the party. the weight of unspoken emotions hung heavy in the air.
then, without warning, something came over him, and bucky's hand cupped your cheek, his touch tender yet possessive as he leaned in closer, his lips hovering just inches from yours. time seemed to stand still as you gazed into each other's eyes, the world around you fading into obscurity.
he waited patiently for you to move away form him, to give him a sign that this wasn’t what you wanted, but you stayed still, waiting for him to finish what he started.
and then, with a soft exhale, bucky closed the distance between you two, his lips meeting yours in a gentle kiss that spoke of promises yet to be fulfilled. it was a moment of pure vulnerability, a silent confession of the feelings that had long simmered beneath the surface.
as you finally pulled away, not because you wanted to, but because you had to take a breath, the world seemed to shift on its axis, the weight of uncertainty replaced by a newfound sense of clarity. in each other's arms, the two of you found solace amidst the chaos, a beacon of light guiding them through the darkness.
"i don't ever want to lose you, precious," bucky whispered, his voice barely audible above the whisper of the wind.
you smiled softly, your heart overflowing with emotion as you pressed closer to him, seeking refuge in his embrace. "you won't," you promised, the words a vow etched in the depths of your soul. "i'm right here, bucky. Always. and i dont plan on going anywhere anytime soon."
and as you stood together beneath the starlit sky, your intertwined hands a symbol of the unbreakable bond that bound you two together, you knew that no matter what the future held, you would face it together, hand in hand, hearts entwined in a love that defied all odds.

Whether Gale wants it or not, he's a quite predictable person. His reliability seems to extend far enough for you to always be able to correctly guess where he might be when the wizard is not near his tent. Although his tendency for routines might be mistaken for something dull, you've always thought of it as somewhat comforting - that among all the chaos that your life has become, there's a sense of regularity; the comfort of knowing how to navigate certain situations.
Just as you knew he would, Gale is sitting by the riverside. His back is slouched as he mindlessly reaches to grab a blade of grass, tear it off, and let his fingers play with it. Brown eyes would be intently staring at the flowing stream if their owner wasn't so lost in thought.
He hears you coming, dry leaves crumble under your feet but he makes no effort to look over his shoulder. Maybe you're actually a wild raccoon that will finally put him out of his misery... On second thought, that is a rather pathetic end for a wizard as great as him. To die by a raccoon. Ha!
"Hey handsome, come here often?" you ask as you sit down next to him.
Gale's robes once smelled of musty books and seawater but during your travels, they have lost their original fragrance in favour of a fresh aroma of pine needles, campfire smoke and herbal medicine. It gave him an "edge", if such a word could coexist with the wizard's homebody way of life.
"Only when I wish to wallow in pity," he answers. Although it's fleeting, almost secretive, you do notice the glance he gives you.
You raise an eyebrow at his response. "And that's often?"
A sad chuckle rumbles in his chest. Gale looks down at his fingers, for the very first time studying what his hands do with the long blades of grass. "A lot more than I'd like to admit." He actually bothers to make himself sound light-hearted but the dread eating him up has already soaked into his words.
You put your elbow on your knee and rest your chin on top of your hand. The new angle allows you to see more of his face, not that it changes your impression. Something's eating him up. "Is this what pretty wizards frequently engage in? I think I ought to update my schedule."
He looks almost like a painting, you think. The one a cleric would put up at the temple, a depiction of martyrhood in the name of something greater. Normally, you'd shrug at the thought of some poor sod thinking that making themself suffer will somehow please their god. It sounds like a questionable freedom of choice at best. But in Gale's case, you can't just shrug. Not anymore. Not since the two of you made it very obvious there's nothing platonic going on.
"I think you'll find that a moping wizard is hardly treasured company."
"Then maybe I should help him stop moping." Playfully, you bump your shoulder into his.
A sad smile graces his face. His brown eyes give you a quick glance again. Gale just can't help his longing. "As much as I appreciate the thought and the effort," he tries to sound unbothered, "my troubles already take up enough of your time. The others might want to have a word with you too."
Not a thing about Gale's statement surprises you. He's always wearing a facade of "Don't worry about little old me" but having gotten closer to the man, you know he's far from that - he wants someone to worry, only doesn't have the pride to ask for that. Part of him probably thinks he ought to earn the right to take up the space in someone's mind. How silly.
Gale's eyes return to you when he sees your fingers sneaking between his hands and a blade of grass he was playing with. No matter what he might say and how laid back he attempts to appear, all of his half-hearted bluffs dissipate when he forms a tight grip around your fingers.
"And I want to have a few words with you," you tell him in round terms. "Well, I want to have many things with you but I guess I can settle for a good old-fashioned conversation."
"I, erm..." he hangs his voice at your allusion. The blush on his cheeks is barely visible in the darkness of the night but you can tell it's there - his whole body is suddenly on fire. Gale clears his throat. "Enlighten me, then! What sort of lexicon do you wish to bestow upon me?"
You can't help the whole-hearted chuckle that leaves your lips. "You're really adorable when you talk all sophisticated." Gale laughs nervously at the compliment and he's just about to say something back but before he gets the chance, you reveal the truth about your arrival. "On a more serious note, I didn't have any endgame plan. I just thought that I'm going to ask you what's on your mind and no matter what you answer, I'm going to bless you with my presence until one of us falls asleep."
For the first time this evening, Gale's eyes linger on you for a long while. Although his initial embarrassment at your boldness is now gone, a sense of nervousness lingers. But do not misunderstand - it's a welcome kind of tension; the anxiety of holding something dear and fearing breaking it. "I'd very much like that," he answers. A small smile of genuine happiness curves his lips.
Gale momentarily tenses up when you lay your head on his shoulder. Then, as though paradoxically a weight has been lifted from his back, he finds himself sighing.
Strangely enough, he feels... calm. Too caught up in his thoughts of impending doom and past failures, Gale has been oblivious to the good things in his life. Especially in the present. He tries to grasp at the fleeting thoughts he had been pitifully entertaining for the past hour or so but they escape his focus. Now that each of his breathes is filled with the smell of campfire smoke and fragrant oils that stuck to your skin, the doom that had been haunting him before dissipates like storm clouds blown away by the wind. Part of him wants to laugh - the morbid scenarios that once rendered him sleepless seem so trivial now. Gale was dealt a bloody difficult hand, yes, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to play it, does it?
He's known hope for a long time but only now does he see her. And what a wonder it is that she's wearing your face.

Lee - Memories 12! Leo

And Leo is slice of life
The two aus (from what Leo heard) were seated in a semicircle as the brothers were finally updated on what was going on after a brief introduction.
"So to be clear," Leo said, "You're all us from another dimension? And so is basically everyone else here?"
"It’s weird, right?" The other Raph (or pomeranian as Leon called him, to which he just rolled his eyes) responded. "The only reason we've even wrapped our heads around this is because we dealt with it a while back."
Another taller turtle that slightly resembled Donnie showed up soon after, grinning excitedly.
"Hey, Dee. Where'd you run off to this time?" Lee asked.
"Gave people explosives and hoping I get more weapons in return."
"Wait wha--"
"That's great kid," pomeranian (? ugh this is weird) snickered.
"Seriously??"
"What; you know how Dee is by now. They'll be fine."
Leo's group all looked at each other right as someone else came up to them.
"Hello besties!! Want to cause chaos with me?"
Everyone's attention was on the Dee lookalike while Dee himself lit up.
"I am going; who's following me?"
"Dee--" Lee started.
"I'm coming!" Leon announced, followed by Leo's brothers raising their hands.
Casey shrugged as he spoke up for the first time in a while. "I'm supposed to keep watch of them, so might as well."
Lee sighed as everyone had a similar thought. "...We are so going to regret this..."

Blaster fire echoed everywhere you turned. Tears formed in your eyes as you took shallow breaths and ran to wherever your legs would take you. Although you despised the First Order, you thankfully never had to deal with them too much… until today.
They came out of nowhere, blasters already aimed at whoever they could fire at and they shot without mercy or a care as to who they hit. Your little town helped the rebellion any way they could, but you all managed to stay off the radar until someone leaked information to the First Order and they swiftly dealt their retribution.
You had never seen so much death in your life, and you fought back sobs as you dodged the dead bodies of your friends and ran for your life. Nothing, not even the horror tales you had heard about the cruelty of the First Order or stories of the boogeyman and monsters from when you were a kid, ever compared to the fear that coursed through your veins at that moment.
“Hey!” a stormtrooper from behind you called out, “Stop! Freeze!”
You gasped as you heard his blaster click. Frozen in place, you raised your hands and slowly turned around. Your hands trembled as you prepared to meet the Maker and join your friends. You closed your eyes and took in a shaky breath one last time as you prepared for the inevitable… 
When you heard a blaster shot ring out, you jumped and let out a small exclamation in surprise. But the pain you expected never came. Instead, you felt a warm hand on your wrist and your eyes shot open. Where there was once a trooper in front of you now stood a handsome man with soft, kind eyes and messy curly hair. He wore an orange flight suit, and you let out a sigh of relief that rebellion backup finally arrived.
“We gotta get out of here,” a smooth voice urged you, “Just take my hand and close your eyes. Pretend we’re anywhere else but here. Come on. I’ve got you.”
Without another word, the man tugged you and led you down the street. All around you was chaos as rebellion soldiers descended on the storm of the First Order and fought them back. The man kept his body in front of your own to shield you, firing his own blaster at any enemy in sight.
“You’re gonna be ok,” he shouted over his shoulder, “I’m gonna get you out of here. We’re gonna get out of here.”
You had no idea what to say, and you were worried that any word out of your mouth would distract him. So, you just followed his lead and put all your faith in this handsome stranger. But, as you both ran down the street, a movement out of the corner of your eye caught your attention. And your rescuer was too distracted by the enemies in front of him that he didn’t notice a uniformed officer aiming right at the two of you.
“Look out!” you screamed as you tugged his hand.
The man snapped his head to the side and easily shot the officer down with one hit. He then turned to you and gave your hand a squeeze as he smiled brightly around the darkness that engulfed your home, “Thank you.”
For a moment, you were lost in his eyes, and his smile made your heart flip in your chest, “Thank you,” you breathed back.
“I’m Poe… Poe Dameron,” he introduced himself.
You gave him your name as you returned his smile and you wondered what ran through his mind. And in that moment you suddenly became aware that he still held your hand… tightly.
But your moment was cut short as a fresh wave of First Order shouted from the distance. Poe gasped as he yanked you forward, “Shit,” he hissed, “This way.”
There were too many enemies for him to fight off on his own, and the rest of the rebellion was on the other side of town for now. So Poe’s first thought was to hide. Live now, fight again tomorrow. Plus, he had a good-looking new companion that he instantly felt determined to protect.
Poe ducked both of you down a darkened, narrow alleyway and he quickly shoved you further in. Using his body to block yours, Poe stood closer to the entrance as he held his blaster out, ready to shoot should the two of you be discovered. But, you didn’t want him to sacrifice himself for you, not when you just met, so you tugged him back so he would be safe too.
You didn’t think, however, that you and Poe together in this tiny alleyway meant that the two of you were now chest to chest, and his lips were only inches from yours. Poe whispered your name as you shimmied your bodies away from the light so you were both hidden, but panic raced through your veins as you didn’t think that was enough cover.
Poe must have mirrored your thoughts, and he quickly came up with an idea. He breathed your name again to make you look at him, and when your eyes met his, he cupped the side of your face tenderly, “I have an idea,” he spoke softly, “Do you trust me?”
“Yes,” you replied without hesitation as you glanced down at his lips for a brief second.
He seemed relieved when he noticed your movement, and in the next moment, Poe’s lips were on yours in a gentle kiss. Poe used his body to shield you as he closed the small gap between your bodies to keep you both well hidden. You gasped softly into the kiss, but instantly relaxed as surrendered to his touch.
The two of you stayed like that for several moments as you listened to the troops stomp right by your hiding spot. Poe’s idea seemed to work, though, and no one even glanced over in your direction. He waited for the noise to settle before he broke away from the kiss, and you couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed that he let you go.
“I think they’re gone,” he glanced out and found that the two of you were indeed alone, “Sorry about that,” Poe suddenly sounded more shy, “It was the only way I could think to keep us better hidden. It won’t happen again.”
You couldn’t hide the disappointment in your face, “I mean, it wasn’t the worst plan in the galaxy, Poe Dameron,” you fiddled with your fingers as you felt bold. Even in the middle of an invasion, you couldn’t help your quickly blossoming feelings toward this man, and he did save your life twice already. And the kiss also helped to calm you and keep you both quiet while the enemies made their way by. 
Poe smirked at you as he took your hand once more, “Hey,” he said your name so sweetly, “Let’s survive this first, then we can flirt. Deal?” he gave you a subtle wink as he nudged your chin.
A smile lit up your face that made Poe’s heart skip a beat, “Deal,” you both squeezed the other’s hand at the same time, “Now let’s get the hell out of here.”

George: Dazai's first detention, I'm so proud.  Fred: Whoa, back up. Why did they get detention?  Ron: Because they're an idiot.  Hermione, terrified: They can do that??
Dazai: *coughs blood*  Fred: Don't die, Dazai!  Dazai: Don't tell me what to do! Draco: I made tea.  Ron: I don't want tea.  Draco: I didn't make you tea. This is my tea.  Ron: Then why did you tell me?  Draco: It's a conversation starter.  Ron: It's a horrible conversation starter.  Draco: Oh, is it? We're conversing. Checkmate.

George: You've been given a new job to do, but I'm worried it might make you angry.  Draco:  Just say it quick, like ripping off a band-aid.  George: You have to teach Dazai how to do magic.  Draco: ...put the band-aid back on.
Dazai: *gets set on fire and screams in agony*  Dazai: Nah, I’m just kidding. Fire does nothing to me.
Dazai: Arson? Oh, you mean "crime brûlée".
Dazai: I’m telling you, my dogs are competent.  Blaise, rushing in: Dazai! Fred tried to make pasta in the coffee pot and now it's broken!
George: If I can't cause tiny bits of chaos every day, I think my body will shut down.
Fred: Dazai, wake up!  Dazai, half asleep: Five more minutes…  Fred: You’ve been in a coma for two years!  Dazai: …  Dazai: Okay, two more minutes…
Fred: I’ve only had Dazai for a day and a half but if anything happened to them I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.
George: Hey, can we stay in your dorm tonight?  Dazai: Why?  George: Fred fiddled with an ouija board and cursed ours.  Hermione: Ron doesn't know how to banish spirits, so he just threw salt at them and yelled "DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A HOTEL TO YOU?!"
Draco: What are you planning to do?  Fred: Hey, now.  "Planning"?!  Do you KNOW who you're talking to?!
Draco: Stop failing.  Dazai: Don’t tell me what to do! I'll fail right now!  Dazai: *Succeeds*  Dazai: Dang it!
Draco: How do you sleep at night knowing people don’t like you?  Dazai: With the fan on.

Truly one of the most unexpected delights of writing this fic has been the insistence of Niall and Dev to show up and take a prominent role in the story. I adore them. I adore them as individual characters, and I love who they are for Baz.
Here's a little from chapter 2 of lost boys. This chapter will publish next week! I'm traveling this week, so I'll post once I'm back.
Under the cut because of length. It's a 30+ sentence Sunday, y'all.
Baz POV, 16 yo, year 12 (school).
Towards the end of lunch, I hear a familiar booming laugh across the canteen. I figure I have two minutes until impact. I tuck my sketchbook and pencils away and twist the lid back onto my thermos of tea. “Just a head’s up,” I say to Niall, who is still contently working away, “we’re about to be interrupted by the demon of chaos hims—” “Bazza!” There’s the solid thump of a hand against my shoulder and the dramatic collapse of tall, muscular limbs into the seat beside me. “My favourite nerd. How’s it going, cuz?” Dev flashes his white, perfect teeth at me before snatching my remaining bourbon biscuit. His fingernails are painted turquoise today, his dark hair is swept away from his face, and he’s wearing eyeliner. The bastard looks amazing. Despite being cousins, we never really hung out as kids. Always kept to different social circles. Which is to say Dev constantly had a roving pack of friends, and I had nobody (save for the lost boys in my dreams). But when I got outed this past spring, Dev decided to take a more active presence in my life. He even convinced me to join the football team with him. He’s charismatic and popular in his own way, and so unabashedly and loudly himself that even the nastiest bullies don’t bother him. It's been nice, having Dev in my life. Even though it means I now deal with his chaotic, abrasive personality all the goddamn time. “Dev, this is Niall.” I make a small sweeping motion to the boy across from us. Dev raises his chin in greeting. “New kid. Hey.” Niall smiles faintly. He looks rather disoriented. Possibly awestruck. I don’t blame him. Dev tends to have that effect on people. I’m almost envious of it. Another smack hits my upper arm. “Did’ya hear about practice this afternoon? Thirty minutes later than usual.” “Yes, I received the same team-wide notification, Dev, thank you.” Dev is now peering at Niall’s drawing tablet without shame, while continuing to talk to me. “A bunch of us are getting ice cream after the match on Friday. Wanna join?” “That’s a very solid maybe,” I tell him in a tone that communicates I’d rather eat grass laced with slug poison. I like playing on the pitch, but I’m not about to huff dairy with a bunch of footballer lads. “Great.” Dev stands, all six feet of him, and squeezes my top knot. I sigh and bat his hand away. Clearly I need to have another conversation with him about acceptable physical contact. “See you at practice then. Nice meeting you, Niall.” He’s off in a swirl of flair and overpriced body spray. “Sorry about him,” I murmur to Niall. I really hope he’s not scared off.

Listening: I've been playing a lot of Beat Saber so my beat saber tracks have been stuck in my head, most notably Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim.

Reading: About halfway through A Memory Called Empire, which is great. I love a fucked up huge space empire. I am forcing myself to internalize the pronunciation of the Teixcalaanli words because I know otherwise I would just silently read through them.
AMCE gets into it fast and throws a lot of political machination out at you which lands well, the vicarious experience of having to think on your feet about complex social protocol is a lot of fun, it's honestly a much better fit for books than, say, swordfighting.
Didn't take my book with me this morning and while flipping through my ebooks on my phone I noticed that my Google Books copy of Nona the Ninth had an update? there's a small play at the end of the book with Palamedes and Ianthe bargaining over Naberius Tern's body. Absolutely wild. Palamedes does a Phoenix Wright OBJECTION! shout. It's great.
Watching: Avatar 2: Way of Water. Hoo boy. I am so mixed on the Avatar movies. They're not very good, from a storytelling perspective, but they're so much fun to watch. Beautiful animation, lovingly thought through world and set design, hot cat people, and some of the worst narrative you've ever heard.
They're back because in the intervening 15 years from Avatar 1 the earth is now dying and they want to colonize Pandora? Sure, okay, but that's definitely sudden and weird. They're also still harvesting a valuable resource from Pandora, because otherwise they wouldn't be able to do the metaphor, but now it's whale oil that stops ageing. Great. Also it's now proven that even as far back as Avatar 1 it was totally possible to back someone's brain up to a flash drive, and they've resurrected the evil general from there.
Okay wait. They can back up your brain and put it into a lab grown catboy hybrid but we're also harvesting immortality whale oil? Surely we have already solved immortality in this setting. Just back up your brain!
There's also... the rest of the movie. Characters have such muddled motivations, why is this kid who was raised by the Na'vi and knows the general was a murderous bastard helping the murderous bastard brainclone. Why is Neytiri written to have no more than 12 seconds of foresight.
Look, I love the idea of Avatar. There are no doubt incredible lorebooks with details on all the animals and machines and cultures out there, I remember watching the Sideways video on the original designs for Na'vi music that got scrapped because it sounded too weird, I love a crazy xenobio worldbuilding project, it's just not a very good story.
Playing: Dark Souls, made it through the Four Kings and the Bed of Chaos, now I'm into the Catacombs. I will finish my video cuts at some point.
Making: Nothing much this week, small sewing repairs. I did not see much of the aurora, just some faint red skyglow on Friday evening, so no photography.
Tools and Equipment: If you forget to do something at work surprisingly often you can just tell someone "hey sorry I lost track of that" and they will not be that mad at you. but watch out.

I’m probably going to make this a series, which will go all the way to RE4. There will be fluff! There will be angst! There will be smut! (eventually). I love slow burns and try to be lore accurate, and as non-ooc as possible. I haven’t actually played the game bc i get too scared, but I watch the hell out of gameplay and read wikis and blah blah. It’s hard to fully grasp locations admittedly when you haven’t played the game before, so I fully admit that it’ll be gray in that area. Anyway... enough about me.

D-DAY/ CHAP 1.
"My darling daughter,
As I write this, I feel the end coming near. I'm so sorry for not being there for you when you needed me most. Life got in the way, and I made mistakes that I deeply regret. I hope you can forgive me. Please know that I love you more than words can express, and I'm so proud of the person you have become. You're strong, kind, and compassionate, and I know you will make the world a better place.
As I face the end, I need you to promise me something. Please do not go looking for me or try to find me. I need you to focus on your own safety and survival. You are strong, and I believe in you.
Remember that I will always love you, and I will always be with you in spirit. Please take care of yourself, my love.

That was the email you received in your Hotmail account this afternoon. You had read it over and over again until it burned into your memory, reciting it in your mind to ensure that you would never forget it. You tried to reply, asking your mother what was happening and what she meant, but there was no response.
Admittedly, you were not very close to your mother. After a nasty divorce, you went to live with your dad in Washington, and since then, she had faded in and out of your life like a distant memory. Some "Happy Birthday" calls, "How's school going?" emails, and "I miss you" letters were all you had of her since you were 13 years old. It hurt like utter hell.
But every time she called, you answered, and she gave you updates on her life. Whenever she wrote, you reciprocated. You went back and forth with yourself on whether or not you should respond until the aforementioned email popped up.
Unfortunately for you, "do not go looking for me" was enough to trigger your stubborn heart to do exactly what she didn't want you to do. You had always been headstrong, "got it from your father," your mom always used to say. You weren't sure what her email meant, and you sure as hell didn't like what it was implying. Was she dying? Dying from what? Why? Her email left you with nothing, no proper closure. Your chest ached.
Was it too late? Would you ever see her again? Would you ever reconcile? You never even got the chance to forgive her.
Even if you didn't remember much about her, you at least knew where she lived and what her job was. Mom was a pharmacist for the Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon City, over by the Arklay Mountains. She moved there not long after the divorce and has worked there ever since. She didn't speak much about her job, though you also never probed about it either.
What is there to question about a pharmacist job anyway? “Hey, you ever filled a months supply of Viagra?” Does Viagra even get prescribed? You’re not sure. 
Soon after receiving the email, you made your way towards the industrial city as quickly as possible. The drive usually took about 10 hours, but you managed to make it in 7 ½ hours by driving like a madman. You were worried about getting pulled over, but luckily, it seemed like no police officers wanted to do their job today.
The drive through the mountains was breathtakingly beautiful, yet nerve-wracking. The twists and turns were treacherous enough during the day, but as dusk turned into the dark of night, they became even more terrifying. To make matters worse, rain began to fall in sheets, pounding the roof of your dad's beat-up old truck with an incessant din. You couldn't help but curse aloud at how this great scenic drive was being ruined.
Your old wipers were no match for this kind of weather, and as soon as you got close enough to the city, you decided to make a pit stop. Your ass was aching too, and the next exit sign indicated a gas station to the left of the freeway. You turned on your blinker and merged onto the exit intersection, eager to stretch your legs and relieve yourself. Your plan was to fill up your gas tank, grab a few snacks for the rest of the ride, and be on your way.
As you approached the gas station, the bright lights illuminated the area like a birthday cake in a dark room. You pulled up quickly, eager to get out of the rain. Parking your truck on the opposite side of a Jeep Wrangler, you found it strange that there was no one inside or outside the vehicle. But you didn't think much of it and stepped out of your jalopy, using your arm to shield your eyes from the downpour.
As you made your way to the pump, you noticed that the gas station was also empty, with no lights on inside. This was starting to feel a little fishy. You looked back at another car and saw that it too was empty. Something was definitely not right here.
And then you saw it.
Blood.
Dark red blood was splattered all over the concrete beneath your feet.
"What the fuck?!" you exclaimed in shock and horror.
In the distance, a piercing screech cried out like something straight out of a horror movie, and it made your blood run cold. Your heart was racing as you frantically looked around, trying to locate where the sound may have come from. Your mind raced with possibilities, but nothing could have prepared you for what you were about to see.
And then you saw them. Maybe ten of them. Dead bodies, shuffling towards you in a grotesque parody of life. Their flesh was rotting, their skin hanging off their exposed muscles in ragged strips. The stench of decay was overwhelming, and bile rose in your throat as you tried not to vomit. 
As they drew closer, you could see the extent of their injuries. Some had chunks of flesh missing, exposing their bones and organs. Others had been shot or stabbed, leaving gaping wounds that oozed with pus and blood. And yet, despite their injuries, they kept coming towards you, their eyes fixed on you with a hunger that made your skin crawl.
You tried to back away, but your legs felt like they were made of stone. You were rooted to the spot, paralyzed with fear as the undead creatures moved closer. Your heart pounded in your chest, your breaths coming in short gasps as you desperately tried to think of a way out. The zombies were moving closer, their decaying fingers reaching out to grab you, it felt like their rancid breath was almost hot on your face. 
Holy fucking shit.
Suddenly, your body moved before you could think, hands shaking as you fumbled with the keys before finally jamming them into the ignition. "Come on, come on, come on," you muttered frantically to yourself. The engine roared to life, and you slammed the truck into reverse, feeling the impact as you hit a few of the undead behind you, their putrid flesh smearing across the back windshield.
Without hesitation, you hit the gas and plowed through the horde in front of you, sending limbs and gore flying in all directions. Tears streamed down your face as you screamed in terror, the sound muffled by the roar of the engine. It was all too much, too real. Your father's voice echoed in your head, telling you to be strong, not to cry.
But you couldn't help it. The sobs wracked your body, making it hard to breathe. You forced yourself to slow down, to take deep, shuddering breaths in and out, trying to regain control. The road ahead stretched out, empty and silent, and you drove on, heart pounding in your chest, praying that you would make it to Raccoon City alive.

The drive to Raccoon City was eerily silent. The usual sound of music blaring from the speakers was absent, and the only thing you could hear was the hum of the engine. Your hands clutched the steering wheel so tightly that your knuckles turned white. You tried to shake off the fear that had gripped you earlier, but it was no use. Those things you encountered were like nothing you had ever seen before.
You desperately searched for a logical explanation to what you had witnessed. Was it a flash mob? A sick prank? But deep down, you knew those weren't plausible explanations. As your thoughts raced, your thumbs drummed nervously on the steering wheel. Was this what your mom was warning you about? Despite everything, you knew you had to find her. She was still your mother, and you were determined to reunite with her.
It was about a half an hour before you arrived in the city. It was a harrowing scene, a city in utter chaos. The streets were littered with abandoned cars, some still smoking, as embers licked the sides of buildings. The once bustling city now looked like a warzone. And in the midst of it all were the undead, their groans and moans filling the air. A repeated message to survivors blared on speakers, urging them to head over to the police station as soon as possible. Your heart raced as you wondered if your mother was there.
As you drove through the chaos, your truck garnered much attention. Its engine roared and headlights pierced through the darkness and rain. You couldn't help but think back to your father's strict parenting and the basic combat and defensive training he instilled in you. He was an army veteran who raised you to be fearless, and you couldn't let him down now. Even though it had been years since you had thoroughly practiced, you knew how to defend yourself if necessary.
But as you drove through the chaotic streets, you couldn't shake off the feeling of terror that had gripped you since you first saw the walking dead. You were determined to find your mother, but the fear of not making it to the police station in one piece was starting to weigh on you.
You frantically scour the old truck for anything that could aid in your survival: a car jack, McDonald's wrappers, and your backpack. Nothing seems particularly helpful, except for the backpack. You realize that it might come in handy if you needed to carry supplies like water, herbs, or even a weapon while searching for your missing mother.
As the walking corpses pound and scratch at your vehicle, you feel the truck shake violently. You know it's time to make a run for it. Although you don't have a solid plan, you've had years of self-defense training and are confident in your ability to use your legs and elbows to fight off attackers.
You pray to God, if they exist, that you'll find something to defend yourself or that you'll have enough skill to make it out alive. You put on the backpack and with a swift kick, you shatter the back window and scramble onto the roof.
Now, you need to find the police department. But where the hell could it be?
As you shield your eyes from the pouring rain, you scan the area, thinking of heading north in the hopes of finding a clue to guide you in the right direction. To your surprise, your truck wasn't that far from the sanctuary. A large brick gate with the letters "RPD" above it caught your eye, the light shining behind the sign like an angel was paving the way for you. The fence was made of sturdy brick, and the gates were steel. You just hoped they were open for entry.
You bravely leap off the top of the vehicle and make a beeline for the gates, the creatures screeching and reaching their arms towards you. As they try to grab hold of you, you execute a swift and powerful kick, sending one of them flying into a nearby bus and breaking its neck at a disgustingly awkward angle.
Ew.
As you barely escape the grasps of the monsters, you finally reach the gates, but guess what? 
They're fucking locked. 
Shit! What are you supposed to do now? 
You frantically search for an alternative entry point, dodging zombies left and right, shoving and kicking them aside as you go. Finally, you spot a fire escape on the adjacent side of the building that leads up to the second floor, which appears to be zombie-free from your current vantage point. However, the fire escape is not easily accessible as it's about 50 feet away and you're on solid ground. But just then, you notice a tree next to the window swaying in the wind, creating a potential opportunity for you to reach the fire escape.
You sprint towards the majestic tree, grateful for its existence as it becomes your savior in this moment of peril.
With adrenaline coursing through your veins, you desperately cling onto the slick wood with your fingertips, refusing to look back at the grotesque monsters that hungrily pursue you. Your muscles strain and ache as you haul yourself up through the slick and treacherous branches. Panic overtakes you as you inadvertently step on a brittle branch, causing it to snap beneath your weight. Time seems to slow as you teeter on the edge of disaster, but you manage to grab onto a sturdier branch just in the nick of time, your heart pounding in your chest as you gasp for air. As you climb further up the tree you see your opportunity to move towards the ledge of the fire escape. 
Three…Two…One…Go!
You make a daring leap towards the fire escape, and for a moment, time seems to stand still as your eyes fixate on the dizzying drop beneath you. But your body moves on instinct, your fingers grappling for the metal bars with a desperate grip that tightens with the surge of pure adrenaline. You manage to catch hold of the bars, your fingers aching from the impact, but you cling on for dear life. You push your body forward, lifting yourself up and over the metal railing.
Before you know it, your knees give out as they hit the metal bars beneath you, your body succumbing to the intense exertion you just went through. Despite being accustomed to physical exhaustion, the experience of genuine fear was traumatic. You realize that your life could have ended in mere seconds if you had made one wrong move. Once you get back home, if you do, you'll definitely be discussing this with your therapist.
Your feet feel uncomfortably squishy in your Chuck Taylors, learning the hard way that the cloth shoes are definitely not made for running in this kind of weather. The rain is relentless, and you can feel your socks getting soaked through. You hope the powers that be don't bless you with trench foot by the end of this horrifying adventure.

You peer through the shattered window of the second floor, noticing the broken glass strewn about the darkened halls of the police station. The only source of illumination is the faint glow of moonlight. It's no surprise that the place looks abandoned. You take a moment to break off the remaining shards of glass, careful not to cut yourself on the sharp edges. With a roll of your jean jacket sleeve, you scrape off the remaining slivers of glass before cautiously sliding yourself through the window. As you land inside, you can't help but be hit by the putrid odor of death. The walls are adorned with blood and the lifeless bodies of the fallen, as if a deranged artist had been given free reign of the building. 
You make every effort to remain silent, as the last thing you want is to alert any zombies that might be lurking inside the building.
As you scan the area, your eyes catch sight of wooden planks scattered on the ground, nails jutting out from their undersides. Someone must have tried to use them to barricade the windows, but it didn't seem to have worked out well. The darkness was all-encompassing, making it nearly impossible to see anything, despite your eyes adjusting to the dim environment. You do make out a staircase adjacent to the window, but the idea of ascending to the third floor seems uncertain given your lack of knowledge of the building's layout. You need to think fast and find a weapon.
Onwards then!
Silently navigating through the bloodied and cluttered halls, you cautiously avoid tripping over any obstacles that could give away your presence. Bodies of officers lay scattered on the floor, their once-protective uniforms now torn and blood-stained. Many of them had been infected and turned into zombies, their lifeless eyes staring off into the distance. As you survey the scene, you notice some of the bodies had gunshot wounds, while others had knives still embedded in their chests. It was clear that this area was now zombie-free only because someone had taken the time to exterminate them, but the question lingered in your mind: who could have done it? 
After some time, you stumble upon a staircase leading downwards. You contemplate descending to the first floor, hoping to find something of use in the main hall. So far, you've scavenged through numerous bodies, but none of them had any usable firearms. However, you did find plenty of bullets, which could come in handy later on. Another curious detail you noticed was the abundance of red and green herbs scattered throughout the building. It was almost comical how many medicinal plants were growing in a police station, but in this apocalyptic world, you knew their healing properties could make all the difference.
As you searched a corpse, the beam of a flashlight suddenly appeared on the wall in front of you, casting your silhouette in the middle of it. Your heart racing, you froze, realizing someone was behind you. The sound of a gun being cocked only added to your anxiety.
“If you're alive, raise your hands,” a male voice commanded. You obeyed, slowly lifting your arms in the air.
You attempted to make light of the situation, hoping to ease the tension. "Would it count if I said I was dead on the inside?" you chuckled, but the fear still lingered.
You heard a small snort of laughter from the man behind you, which made you think that maybe he wasn't as serious as he seemed. It was a welcomed sound in a tense situation. After a few seconds of silence, he spoke up.
"It's okay, you can turn around. I put away my gun. I'm an officer, well, I was supposed to be."
You noticed a hint of melancholy in his voice, but his tone was also encouraging. Still, you kept your hands up just to be cautious. When you finally turned around, the industrial flashlight shone in your eyes, causing discomfort. You shielded your eyes immediately.
"Ah, damn, sorry!" He scrambled to turn the flashlight away from you.
Despite the dim lighting, you could make out the silhouette of a man in front of you. He towered over you and was clad in a vest adorned with more pockets than you could count, like some sort of real-life action figure. His uniform looked like SWAT gear, vest emblazoned with the letters "RPD" that you assumed stood for the police department. As he drew closer, a musky scent mixed with the unmistakable metallic odor of blood wafted towards you, making you wrinkle your nose. You couldn't help but notice the dried blood and grime splattered across his torso, arms, and even the front of his legs. It was pretty clear that this guy was the one responsible for taking down the zombies that had been lurking around the station.
“My name is Leon, Leon Kennedy. And yours?”

Hour 4 "When all hell breaks loose" Time: [ 2:25 AM ]
It was all going south. Maybe it was your raging instinct which was telling you not to follow Jungkook so easily to the bathroom, but you were in no shape to fight with yourself anymore. The strong intoxication was ruining all of you, including already deteriorating friendships between guys like Jungkook and Jimin. Jungkook's soft hand was holding yours, making you feel at peace with possibly a terrible decision. Jungkook really seemed like a shitty friend to Jimin, so now you finally understood Taehyung's ramblings. From comforting him outside to sneaking a peek and a cheeky touch of you inside. Walking upstairs, you felt yourself breaking down a little bit, realizing this entire loud and chaotic night was taking its toll on you.
"I need to go to the bathroom." You whispered to Jungkook as you walked past the bathroom in the hallway upstairs. The hallway was completely empty as somebody just exited the bathroom. He stopped and opened the bathroom door for you.
"You can go do your thing first."
"It's okay. I don't need to actually use the bathroom." You slurred a little bit. Jungkook realized you might be just as drunk as him by this point. He had no idea you chugged an entire cup of strong gin and tonic before you found Taehyung in the kitchen.
"What?" He giggled, scrunching his nose.
"I just need to cry. No need for peeing."
"Oh." Jungkook let out a remorseful giggle, feeling sorry to see you like this. Still, you looked pretty adorable. He hugged you and pulled you inside the bathroom.
"Talk to me. You okay?"
"No. He hates me." You leaned against the wall, sighing.
"He doesn't hate you, he just needed to say something. It's not easy for him, you know? Don't stress about it. He'll be fine." Jungkook finished a drink he had in his hand, putting the empty cup on the bathroom sink. You found comfort in Jungkook's tone, making you believe you were panicking slightly too much. Still, you appreciated his caring gestures and gentle words.
"Sorry for calling you one of Jimin's "fuckboy friends"."
"You never said my name."
"Well, I was thinking it then."
"I know, it's just...I'm-You're such a bad friend." You scoffed.
"I know. I should stop drinking."
Jungkook's comment made you overthink ss it usually did. Was he really blaming alcohol for his attraction towards you?
"Is alcohol just a reason though?" You raised your head slightly, your hair uncovering your tired eyes.
"No, but I don't think you want to hear my answer." His tone was numb, almost too direct for your liking.
"Why?"

It all started off innocently enough. Some solace from the bumping music that seemed to make the walls vibrate, all of the strangers that seemed to know each other well. Besides, you’d rolled a joint while Ashton scrambled to set up the sound system, place snacks, and whatever else he was doing for this exact moment, this exact feeling.
You escape out the side door in the kitchen, to the patio. It’s set up too, with twinkling lights and a couple of adirondack chairs just waiting to host your friend’s inebriated guests. The grill is covered, maybe to prevent someone from setting this place on fire in a drunken stupor, and the umbrella over the small table is closed tightly. The early autumn evening air was dry, approximately sixty degrees. There’s a slight breeze that tickles the sweat that has begun to bead on the back of your neck and the coolness feels refreshing. You can still hear the music, but the sound is muffled and you’re unable to make out what song is playing right now. You lean on the wooden railing and sigh contentedly before digging in your pocket for the doob tube and lighter. The tube was easy to find, its smooth plastic pressing into your thigh all evening, practically taunting you. You pat your other pockets down, hoping to God you’d remembered to bring a lighter outside. Empty. Shit. 
You sigh and turn on your heel to re-enter the house, the chaos and anxiety, with a confident plan in mind. There are lighters in the drawer by the sink, you think. A Clipper, a Zippo, and two BBQ lighters, at least… It was just a matter of squeezing through the small crowd surrounding the drinks station, easy. You walk up to the sliding glass door, but it opens before you’re able to reach for the handle. A dirty guitar sound from a Nirvana song you’d heard before but couldn’t name leaked out into the quiet night.
“Hey,” Calum smiles at you warmly, but blocks your path inside. “What’re you doing out here alone?”
You smile sheepishly and motion the joint at him. “But I forgot a lighter.”
His grin widens at you while he reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a tiny green Bic. “Seems like I got what you’re lookin’ for. Care if I join you?”
You nod and both return to the railing, leaning onto it. You use the lighter to pumpkin-top the end of your joint before lighting it. “So,” you breathe the smoke in deeply, holding for a moment in your lungs. “Ashton send you to find me? Make sure I’m not in a ditch somewhere?” You glance up at Calum before taking another hit and passing it to him. Despite your looking away, he keeps his gaze focused on your face even while he brings the joint to his lips.
“No.” Another hit.
You raise your eyebrows at him while he places the joint between your index and middle fingers.
“That shit tastes good. Is it dispo stuff or what?” He changes the topic.
“I roll with lavender,” you say, joint hanging off your lips. You almost think you see him glance down at your mouth when you say it. “Cuts the weed, but smells incredible,” you shrug. 
He reaches to grab the joint straight from your mouth before taking another hit and putting it back where he found it. If you were sober, it’d probably been really annoying. 
“You didn’t answer my question,” he turns to face you, lips curled into a small, playful smile.
“The fuck do you mean?” You laugh before inhaling once more, starting to feel that familiar, comfortable pressure behind your forehead. 
Calum puts his right elbow on the railing, arm reaching in your direction. “What’re doing out here alone?”
“I told you already, Calum! And you so graciously provided me with a lighter. My hero.” You pretend to swoon and bring the jay back to your lips. 
His lips press together and you try to ignore how soft they look. It must be the tequila talking. “I guess I meant the alone part. Having fun tonight?”
You pass the joint back to him and sigh. “It’s a little freaky I guess. I know like one and a half people here. Ashton and, well, I guess you’re the half, Calum.”
He laughs, eyes crinkling. “I would’ve guessed I would be three-fourths.” You’re glad he didn’t take it personally.
You had been friends with Ashton for five months and only ever really hung out with each other. You smoked, taught him how to skateboard, and watched shitty adult animation series together most of the time. You knew he had plenty of other friends, sure, but you weren’t expecting to have to meet all of them at once. All but one. He introduced you to Calum last week, when they decided they wanted to throw a rager. He was nice enough and certainly easy on the eyes, but making new friends always came hard to you. 
“I mean, maybe now…” You grin and reach for the joint, nestled comfortably in his fingers.
“Keep it.” He glances at you, shooting a small grin in your direction before reaching into his jacket pocket. You’re puzzled until you see it, held carefully between his pointer and thumb: another joint.
It makes you a little giggly, thinking he was just as prepared as you were. Maybe making new friends isn’t so bad after all.
He raises his eyebrow at you after lighting the end, notably using your pumpkin-top method from earlier. You finish your jay at the same time he starts his. “What’s so funny?”
“You really had one ready in your pocket, then smoked mine and said nothing about it? I’m starting to think you didn’t come out here to see what I was up to at all, just coincidentally had the same plan as me.” You drop your finished joint over the railing and playfully nudge his boot with your shoe.
“Two things can be true at once, sweetheart.” He places the new joint between your lips and relights it as you pull. “No lavender in mine, though.”
You grumble your thanks before wrapping your mouth around the filter again, keeping an eye on how his fingers remained around the jay, practically feeding it to you.
You’re feeling it now, like really feeling it. 
“So how’s your night going?” 
He motions to the two empty chairs to the left of the sliding glass door. “Let’s sit.”
So you do, pulling your legs up and tucking your feet beneath you. 
“It’s been good. Seen some guys I haven’t hung out with in a while.” He takes a hit. It’s not weird to watch him as he smokes, but God does it feel like something. “I’m technically supposed to be keeping an eye on Joey right now, broke some shit last time we threw a few months ago.” He takes another. “But I think Ashton’s got that handled right now.” He cocks a smile in your direction and reaches his hand, holding the joint, over the armrest of your chair. “D’you want?”
You didn’t mean to do it, not really, but your mind is foggy from the weed and your actions are more impulsive than you thought they could be at your level of drunk. You lean your head down to his hand, taking the joint in your mouth and brushing your lips against his fingers momentarily. 
He’s a little perplexed, but he’s looking at you endearingly. “Need help with that?”
“Fuck you.” You shake your head and blow smoke in his direction.
“All you had to do was ask,” he laughs and brings the jay back to your lips. “Need me to tell you when to suck, too?”
Your stomach churned a bit at his choice of words and the tips of your ears started to heat up. Internally, you were fucking reeling, but you just rolled your eyes and took the hit without needing any further assistance. “I’m done.” You motion his hand away and lean back into your seat. “Thanks, Cal.” It was a slip of the tongue, something you’d heard Ashton call him. Do I know him like that?
“Thank you, for the company,” he counters. “And the lavender. Gotta try that shit.” He smiles at you before finishing the joint and flicking the remnants off the porch, into the darkness.
Calum looks at you for a moment before asking, “Did’ya wanna go back in?”
You instinctively obfuscate your face from his view with your arm and drop your eyes from his gaze before shaking your head. 
“Didn’t think so.” He leans into the chair and when you peek at him from behind your sleeve, the fucker is grinning like you were setting up some joke for him. There was something behind the expression on his face that you couldn’t really place.
You couldn’t help it by this point, really. The two joints were settling well in your mind and maybe you really could place some blame on the shots you and Ashton took an hour ago.

Calum tilts his head at you, suddenly making you self conscious of how long you’ve been looking at him. Time moves slow when you’re high, anyway. It seems like he’s expecting you to say something. You pull your arms down from your face, around your knees.

Calum leans his forearms on the armrest again and you feel compelled to shift closer to him. You can tell this is fun for him. You can’t tell if it’s fun for you, yet.
He cracks a toothy smile. “I’m just not sure the anatomy is comparable.”
The sliding door opens with a soft whoosh behind you and a familiar voice calls out to you both. A Still Woozy song is playing this time.
“What’re you guys doing out here? Shit, did you smoke without me!?”

And that something else is Psychonauts, that's right, I collaborated with @doodle17 to make a Psychonauts au called Welcome new campers! (Also tw for mentions of abuse and murder)

This au is a future au that mixes bits of doodle's own future au and new characters, but unlike that au it mainly focuses on the kids over at Whispering rock and the new interns which I can tell you a bit about now and give some picrew visuals (or at least the closest I can to how they look and I'll try to find the links to the ones I used and add them later, but I wanna get this out first)
First: Sora Elliott Zanotto

Sora is one of the older campers coming in at the age of 14, he used to live with his father who normally abused him and his mother before she was murdered by him and he got away with it over lack of evidence and he bribed the jury. During the time he still lived with his father he used camp as a way to escape his home for a few months where he learned how to use pyrokinesis before ending up getting adopted by Lili. He dresses like a gay little emo (cuz that's what he is) and he hates most people cuz trust issues, but will warm up to you if you start talking about music or bands he likes. He has a bit of medical knowledge cuz he would try to help his mother whenever he could when she was alive, including stitches and bandaging up wounds, he can even do a minor surgery if he's asked to.
Second we have the twins: Callie and Milo Tucker

Callie and Milo are some of the younger campers at the age of 9. They're little balls of chaos who love to mess with people and cause mischief. Callie love to levitate out of people's reach and throw water balloons at them while Milo (who can see the dead) just loves to throw people away with telekinesis so he can talk with his ghost friends alone, he really only let's Lili, Milla or D'art get close. These two have older sister that will be talked about later and two parents who have a hard time dealing with them most days. Their clothes match most of the time and they love it, makes them feel special to one another. But yeah, they're chaotic, they're cute, and I love them.
Third: Marshall Watts

He's one of the only non psychics on this roster, being one of two. He's an intern who's just there to help with paperwork. Not too much is known about him other than that he's a psychic fan boy. He's also Sora's partner that Raz doesn't really like for whatever reason.
Next is is the start of doodle's little friends and I love them: Margo Teef

(Note: I copy and pasted all of this from a convo doodle and I had) He was raised by his non-psychic grandparents after his mom left when he was a baby and his father was nowhere to be found. Other than that, he's had an okay life, other than the fact he couldn't afford a way to get to and participate at camp which made him really sad. It ended up in him actually sneaking into the camp and running into his hero Raz! (But he had no idea it was raz at first) his personality is pretty simple. He's kind of shy, but always up for an adventure, as well as being super nerdy lol. If you bring up something about comics or the Psychonauts he'll start rambling for hours put of nowhere.
And next: Natalie Fealt

She's a punk girl who isn't afraid to tell you how things are. She lived with her dads and still kinda misses them now that she lives in the dorms at the motherlobe. She interns under Adam but is a little upset that she didn't get Lizzie or Lili as her mentor, but Adam is nice enough.
Now we have one of my favorite little goobers: Shirley Adams

She's very strange and very loveable in my eyes. She normally has a weird fact or two up her sleeves and is never in one place for too long. She mentors under Gisu, and as per Doodle's words (or at least close) will take any chance she can to escape. She'll come back like an hour or two later with bugs in her hair or on the back of a goat or something.
Finishing up: Luca Nein

As his name suggests he's the child of Milla Vodello and Sasha Nein themselves. He's not really an intern, but hangs around them enough to be like one. He's kinda a germaphobe and if you cough near him he'll freak out. He tries his best in what he wants to do and we love him for that.
Alright! This is the basics for the interns+ Luca! I'll have to make a part two for the camp councilors and other adults that are featured in this au but I hope you guys have fun with this! This au is still a work in progress, we still need a solid story to figure out as well as a few other things, and you guys are free to give any suggestions you want!

(i will make a part 2, it depends on how much you guys like this one, also this is my au, where witches and humans live together after Belos was defeated for good, a truce was done between the human and demon realm)
Hunter and Willow liked each other but you also liked them, no you loved them, you loved the two ever since you were introduced to them by Luz after they all came back, you found Willow cute, sweet, caring and surprisingly strong, and for Hunter, you found his voice very attractive, he was also a strong one but you found his scars fascinating and he was a nice looking person too, they both were, you still daydream about them until you feel a tap on your shoulder "Uhhh, y/n?" you turn to see Luz "yeah?" you look confused, wondering why she tapped your shoulder "You were zoning out again...Willow said your name but you didn't respond" Luz says, you blush a bit, clearly embarrassed, you look at Willow "Sorry, I guess I've just been a bit stressed about the upcoming quiz" you chuckle nervously, hoping they would buy it "yeah, so are me an Gus" Willow smiles, your heart beats a bit faster due to her "y-yeah heh, I hope you two get a good score" you stutter, smiling back "thanks! I'm sure you'll do a great job too!" Gus says, continuing to eat the school lunch, you look at Hunter and he seems bothered 'whats wrong with him? should I ask? were people picking on him because of his scars again?' you think, he catches you staring and you look down at his food tray "are you gonna eat?" you ask looking back up at him, Hunter looks at the food "It looks disgusting" he says, slightly scrunching up his face in disgust, you chuckle "yeah but it doesn't taste that bad surprisingly" he looks at you with a 'are you sure?' look, you nod and tell him to try it, he hesitantly does so "so? how is it?" you ask him, he swallows the food then looks at you "this. is. horrible. why do they serve this to kids?" you shrug, the bell then rings, signaling that lunch was over

It was the end of the day, you were currently waiting for your parent(s) to pick you up from school "Y/N!!!" you turn around and see Willow and Gus running towards you "oh hey you two, what's up?" you tilt your head to the side a bit while raising a brow in question "Luz wants to know if you're able to come over to her house today, are you free?" Willow asks "yeah we got a lot of chaos and studying to do" Gus smirks "I don't know, I'll have to ask my parent(s) but I'll keep you updated!" you smile "alright, see ya' y/n!" Gus says as Willow waves with a smile as they start boarding a bus
---------------------------------------------------- you finally got home and plopped down on your bed, groaning from the tiring day, you already asked your parent(s) if you could go to Luz's house but you have to do chores first before you do, you already texted Gus and told him that you would be there and that you had some things to do but you decided to take a small nap before you did anything 'today was a tiring day' you thought drifting into a small sleep

A/N: Sorry it’s been a hot minute since I’ve updated this story! I promise I haven’t forgotten! 
“Kriffing long necks,” Syko mutters as he reads over the new coordinates. 
Three times they’ve done this to him. 
Three. Karking. Times. 
If they hadn’t already advanced him half the credits, and promised double to make up his fuel costs, he would call off the job. He’s too valuable to play babysitter while the Kammies get their kriffing act together. 
The notion of being a babysitter reminds him to glance at his chrono. It’s been a few hours since he checked on the kid. Not like she can do anything, but with how this job is panning out, he wouldn’t put it past her to up and die on him. 
Shoving himself to his feet with a growl, he is about to leave the cockpit when the room starts to flash red; alarms scream; a disinterested, mechanical voice chants: system malfunction, system malfunction, system malfunction…
As if this day could get any worse.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
“Do you see the panel?” Tech calls up to her. “It should be on your right.” 
Omega shifts, rotating slowly to the right in the tight space, and finally eyes the colorfully wired panel. “I see it! Now what?” 
“Are any of the wires loose?” 
Omega reaches for a yellow one, and starts to pull on it. 
“A very gentle tug will suffice,” Tech adds a moment too late as Omega pulls the wire from the panel. 
Alarms begin wailing above her where the cockpit is, along with the confused shouts of her brothers inside the ship. 
Omega cringes. “I think I pulled too hard, Tech. How do I…put it back?” 
“I suppose now is as good a time as any for a lesson in soldering,” Tech says, voice raised to be heard over the alarms. 
Later that evening, Tech has Omega memorize every wire, its placement on the circuit board, and its purpose. 
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Omega tucks in on herself, trying to fit comfortably into the small space. The screeching of alarms overhead makes her smile, the sound echoing through the depths of the small ship. They aren’t going to stop until Syko lands, until he gets to a mechanic, and makes them tear the ship apart looking for something that’s wrong. 
But nothing’s wrong. Not really. 
The ship just has its wires crossed…quite literally. 
Tech will love this story, and Omega cannot wait to tell him every little detail. 
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Syko sets course for the nearest planet. He runs five different diagnostic scans and all five come up with different error messages. Whatever is wrong with his force-forsaken ship, it didn’t just happen. It’s almost as if someone sabotaged…
With a furious scream, Syko throws his data pad across the cockpit before he races to the girl’s cell. He misses all but two of the ladder rungs on his way down, nearly losing his balance when his boots hit the durasteel floor. He doesn’t look in the cell before he deactivates the shield and steps inside. 
Empty. 
And the tiny vent has been pried open, dark residue of dried blood staining the edges. 
How in sith’s hell…
He steps up onto the cot and peers down the shaft, dark and void of life. But she’s in there somewhere, messing with his ship. Who knows what kind of chaos she’s causing. She’s going to get them both killed. This job isn’t worth all the credits in the galaxy if he’s kriffing dead! 
“Hey!” he roars down the vent. “Get out of there!” 
His enraged voice echoes back at him, but the girl doesn’t make a sound. 
“I’m gonna take this ship apart piece by piece, and when I find you…” the unfinished threat hangs between them. Syko isn’t sure exactly what he’ll do, but he can’t risk losing a single credit from this transaction. Not when he has to add ship repairs on top of fuel costs. And he isn’t about to admit to the kammies that he let a child get the best of him. 
No. He is going to fix this, and then he is getting this kid off his ship for good.  
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Omega’s left arm is numb. She carefully stretches it out, wriggles her fingers, trying to encourage circulation. If only she had a chrono on her. It feels like she’s been holed up inside the ship for hours. It’s hot and uncomfortable. She’s sweaty, clothes damp, hair clinging to her neck and forehead. 
On the bright side, she’s out of Syko’s reach. 
The alarms are still blaring, and Syko occasionally screams and curses. At her, at his ship, at the alarms, at the Kaminoans. She thinks he even curses his mother at one point, but she can’t be sure. 
The thrum of the ship around her changes, and her stomach lurches as the ship drops from hyperspace. She’s never gotten nauseous from space travel, but the heat alongside her nerves make her feel queasy. Omega mops at her face with her discarded jacket, sweat stinging her eyes. 
The first thing she’s going to do when she gets back to the Marauder is take a sonic. 
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
“I need a mechanic,” Syko demands the moment he’s off the ship. 
He is met with an unimpressed look from the nearest dockhand. “You’ll have to take that up in the office. There’s a diagnostic fee, and then a down payment before we’ll touch your ship.” 
“Of course there is,” Syko grumbles. He digs into one of his pockets and pulls out a fistful of credits. “Watch this ship. Make sure nothing comes out of it.” He shoves the credits at the man. 
They are happily taken. “Sure thing,” the man says. 
Syko shoves past him, grumbling swears in every language he knows. 
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Omega hasn’t heard a scream or curse from Syko in several minutes since the ship has gone still, the only sound being the incessant alarms. Carefully, she makes her way back to her vent, wiggling down the narrow passage until she’s back in her cell. Syko – the genius that he is – left the shield open. 
While she’s had a scheme in place since before she even got the vent open, Omega briefly analyzes her options now that the plan is actually in play. She can send her brothers a distress message from Syko’s ship and risk Syko coming back and catching her…or she can get off the ship now and hope she finds a way to make contact with her brothers without drawing attention to herself. 
She doesn’t have any credits to her name and she’s sure she looks about as gross and sweaty as she feels. The likelihood of her not looking suspicious is incredibly low. 
But she’ll take her chances. 
She makes her way to the open ship ramp and peeks down into the spaceport. It is fairly busy. Busy enough that she can disappear. Omega creeps down the ramp. 
“Hey!” a voice barks at her. 
Omega freezes, blood pounding in her ears. That wasn’t Syko’s voice. Glancing over, she sees that she is being watched by a man in filthy, blue coveralls. She stands up straight. She can handle this. 
“Hello,” she says, offering a small wave. “Have you seen my dad?” 
The man glares at her. “He said not to let anything off this ship.” 
“Oh,” Omega says, “he didn’t mean me.” 
“I think he did.” 
Omega frowns at him and crosses her arms. “He told me to bring him more credits. He just commed me. Said he didn’t have enough.” She pats her very empty coat pocket, and then adds, in a low voice, “I don’t think he’d be very happy if he found out you kept him waiting.” 
This gives the man pause. “Fine. Go straight to the office then. Don’t wander around.” 
“I won’t,” Omega chirps, jumping down from the ramp. She flees into the crowd before the man can change his mind. 
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Syko returns to his ship, mechanic in tow.
His impromptu guard blinks at him as he approaches. “Where’s your kid?” he asks. 
“What?” Syko asks. “Are you saying a kid got off this ship?” 
“Yeah, your kid,” the man hedges. “Said you commed her to bring more credits to the office.” 
Syko resists the urge to pull his blaster and shoot the man where he stands. “You kriffing idiot! Where did she go?” 
The man points into the swarm of people buzzing around the port.  
Syko turns to the mechanic. “You, start the repairs. And you,” he turns on the man, “you’d better hope I never see your face again, or I’ll blow it off, you understand?” 
The man swallows and hurries away. 
Syko takes a steadying breath before starting his frantic search for his bounty. 
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Omega runs and runs and runs. She doesn’t stop running until she feels a pain pulling at her side. Turning into an alley, she hides behind a stack of empty crates, and works on getting her breathing back to normal. She’s thirsty, hungry, and sore. She wishes she had thought to find a canteen from Syko’s ship before she fled, the way her throat feels aflame and her tongue thick. Dehydration can be very dangerous, Omega, Tech’s voice warns her in the back of her mind. 
Omega leans heavily against the wall. Finding water shouldn’t be too hard. And while she won’t die from hunger, it would be nice to have something to eat. She’d even take Javik’s moldy tasting rations about now. 
However, her main concern is finding secure, long range communications. 
This is one situation she has not been trained for. Where should she even start? 
Water, she thinks with a small cough, I’ll start with water.

His father had gone out to pick up some herbs, which left Lucas alone in the shop for once. He hadn’t wanted to come along; going out in the daytime had become almost overwhelming for him as of late. He found himself regretting his choice to stay home anyway. At least he wouldn’t be worrying about what happened last night.
Did someone see? He sure hoped not; in that chaos of what had happened, he liked to think that he had slipped away with little issue. All the same, something nagged at the back of his mind, telling him that someone had seen him. While he couldn’t be certain if it was truly his intuition or just the result of his overactive mind, the thought wouldn’t leave him be.
In an effort to distract himself, he chose to throw himself into his books. If nothing else, he could at least update his notes. One doesn’t become an apothecary by not taking notes on what kind of herbs did what.
Lucas’ studies were interrupted by a knock at the door. He ignored it at first; anyone looking at the sign would know that the shop was closed for today. Maybe this visitor didn’t see the sign yet, and would walk away soon enough.
Apparently not; the stranger not only lingered, but decided to knock on the door two more times. By the third time, Lucas had become fed up and stood.
“Hey,” he called as he approached the door. He knew the door wasn’t soundproof, the stranger could absolutely hear what he was saying. “Can’t you read the sign? We’re closed for today, you’ll have to come back tomorrow if you really need something done-”
Lucas cut himself off as he actually opened the door. Even upon getting a good look at the stranger’s face, he reflexively shut the door.
Two things occurred to Lucas in that moment.
First: that was Aevus at the door. The court mage, the one that hosted that stupid event in the first place. Not only was he famous for his use of time magic, he was also said to be a talented tactician. Between his strategic mind and the might of the Royal Guard, many people felt that very few could actually threaten the kingdom.
The second thing Lucas realized was that he had just slammed the door in Aevus’ face.
Slowly, he opened the door again and peered out. Mercifully, Aevus was still standing patiently. Other than a raised eyebrow and crossed arms, there was no way of telling what Aevus could have been thinking.
“Um,” Lucas stammered. “I-I’m so sorry. I wasn’t expecting any visitors, especially not one like you. Not to say I’m not honored-!”
Aevus let himself in. He wasn’t alone; he was followed in by an armored fellow. That particular suit of armor marked him as a member of the Royal Guard - he was probably there in case Aevus got into trouble.
“You can relax,” Aevus said, turning to Lucas with a polite smile. “I’ll say it right now; you’re not in any trouble.”
Despite Aevus’ words, Lucas found it incredibly hard to relax. There was an intensity in the air that the court mage seemed to bring with him; whether it was because of his magical strength or something else, it made it near impossible for Lucas to be anything but tense.
“I hope you’ll forgive me saying so, but I find that hard to believe,” Lucas said, eyes flickering towards the knight. He seemed content to just stand by the doorway. “It’s not every day we get a visit from the court mage, after all. And a member of the Royal Guard, if I’m not mistaken? If you’re looking for my father, he’s out gathering herbs-”
“I was looking for you, actually.”
The words filled Lucas with dread; he could practically envision what Aevus was about to say next. Sure enough, Aevus took a moment to observe Lucas before continuing, “I saw what you did back in the Mage’s Tourney. Are you aware that was time magic?”
It took everything Lucas had to not respond with a sarcastic comment. The man somehow saw him completely reverse a whole awning's collapse…and he chose to not only state the obvious, but to phrase it like he was talking down to him? “Are you looking down on me? Of course I know that was time magic.”
At least Aevus had the courtesy to realize the weight of his words.
“My apologies, I hadn’t meant to…” He trailed off, and for the first time he seemed almost awkward. That was a surprising sight from the man that seemed so stoic and self-assured before.
“My point is, I’d like to know how you came to learn that kind of magic,” Aevus said. “Dialga is rather…picky with who he imparts his wisdom to.”
“I actually don’t know how I learned it,” Lucas admitted. He placed a hand on his arm - he could feel it tingle. “All I know is that I got hit by something, and ever since then…”
“Where were you struck?”
“My arm.”
“May I see?”
Lucas complied; he pushed his right sleeve up so that Aevus could get a good look at his arm. The scar stretched from the back of his hand to his elbow. Maybe it would be more accurate to describe the scar as a mark - his arm looked more like one of those bowls that had been glued together with some kind of paint. He couldn’t recall the name of that particular art.
Aevus carefully traced a finger over the scar. “Well, this is indeed temporal energy you were struck by. A very strong blast of it, too. That you survived is a miracle in itself.”
He circled around the boy. “Is that scar the only physical change? You don’t feel any older or younger than you should be?”
“Well…people always tell me I look younger than I am. That said, I don’t feel any different.”
“Have people told you this before you got the scar?”
“Yeah.”
“In that case, I’d say you haven’t aged any.” Aevus stopped his circling and looked at Lucas. “Count yourself blessed in that respect; such a blast could have easily aged you sixty years.”
“Great. Nice to know I miraculously dodged being eighteen going on eighty.” The comment seemed to burst out of Lucas’ mouth without warning. Aevus seemed to take it in stride, though; in fact, he thought he could hear something like a chuckle coming from the mage.
“Now, have there been any other changes? Any other scars, or things that have changed since the incident?”
“Well, now that you mention it…I’ve been pretty sensitive to light. I mean, more sensitive than I was before. Is that normal?”
Aevus paused. “That depends. Have you started seeing colors around every living thing as well?”
When Lucas nodded his assent, Aevus hummed, “Interesting. That’s actually an indicator of a different kind of ability. Perhaps the temporal energy awakened that trait in you.”
“What do you mean, a different kind of ability?!” Lucas cried. “It’s not enough that I can apparently use time magic, but something else is going on with me?!”
“Calm down,” Aevus assured him. “What you are sensing is called Aura. It’s actually very common in certain circles of magic. I’d be more surprised if you didn’t sense this kind of thing, considering what you’ve been through.”
“Does that include time magic?”
“As a matter of fact, yes,” Aevus answered. “I can sense it as well.”
Lucas had to admit, that was almost comforting. If only because he knew he wasn’t alone in being this overly sensitive.
“I’ve been meaning to ask,” Lucas said. “How did the rest of the event go? Was everyone safe?”
“I was actually hoping you’d ask that,” Aevus said with a smile. “Not to worry. What you did actually ensured everyone’s safety. You stopped the collapse right before it could cause any lasting damage.”
Lucas let out a sigh of relief before Aevus’ words registered. “…Why were you hoping I would ask that? I mean, of course I would. What kind of apothecary would I be if I wasn’t concerned for people’s safety?”
Aevus shrugged, the smile remaining on his face. “A rather poor one, I must agree. You would also be a pretty poor excuse of a court mage. Fortunate that I’ve chosen you to be my successor.”
Lucas stared. “Excuse me?"

It’s the morning after your first shift on the shop floor, and you’re getting yourself ready for your next one this afternoon. You’re really being thrown in at the deep end with a triple threat: new issue day, D&D supply launch day, and your first ever closing shift out on the floor. Thankfully, as long as your schedule still aligns, you’re paired with Ralph, who certainly wouldn’t abandon you no matter how quiet the day may be. You consider getting to the strip mall a little early so that you can perhaps get some extra encouragement from your new friend(? Can you call him that already?) Steve, but you realise that perhaps food is more important. Besides, when you do finally park up, you don’t see him directly in the window anyway. Perhaps he isn’t even working.
You head on in and see an already-exhausted Ralph tidying the comic crates. As you cause the doorbell to chime, Ralph looks at you with a resigned smile. You grit your teeth. “It’s been that bad, huh?”
Ralph shakes his head. “Ahh, it’s helped the time go quicker. Thankfully, we’ve got a little calm period now before the next storm… The after-school rush. Now, I’ll take the register for that, if you could just try and keep on top of keeping things as organised as possible.” You nod and take a deep breath in. Ralph notices and calls, “Hey.” You look up at him and he smiles reassuringly at you. “We’re gonna do great today, alright?” You nod again, more relaxed than your first. Ralph continues, “And I promise I won’t get a random migraine as soon as it’s convenient for me.”
Your eyes widen. “How did - Did Jesse get in trouble? I swear, I didn’t want that to happen, I didn’t mean to squeal -”
Ralph laughs, “Relax, kid.” Bold words from someone only three years older than you. “It didn’t come from the top. Not that Cam would risk having to punish his friend. Word travels fast amongst us here, just a heads up…” He walks over to you to bend down to your ear level and murmur, “Future Mrs Harrington.”
“Okay,” you step aside and hold up a finger while Ralph laughs. “That one, I am nipping in the bud. If a man being nice to someone one time means they’re bound romantically, then I feel sorry for all the women of Hawkins.” Ralph’s laughter intensifies.
The next couple of hours are an absolute flurry of teenage chaos. Comics are being thrown around, as are tantrums over the lack of issue 200. One kid, with curls falling out of his baseball cap, is instead parading around the brand new D&D section proudly, while loudly reassuring his friends that they can read his copy when he is done with it. A red-haired girl asks through stone-cold eyes how he could have possibly gotten a copy early, to which he simply shrugs and says, “I got connections. What can I say? I’ve been telling you all, I basically run this joint.”
The group surrounding him scoffs in disbelief. Remembering the names Steve used yesterday, and putting two and two together, you decide to have a little fun amongst the madness. You tap him on the shoulder, “Sorry, Dustin Henderson?”
He whips around and looks at you like a deer in headlights, swallowing hard. “Y-yes?”
“I take it that our exclusive deal for our most prestiged customer yesterday was to your liking?” you ask, raising your eyebrows slowly, silently willing him to play along.
He shows silent understanding by copying your expression. “Yes! Very much so. You’ll continue to have my patronage for a long time yet. Especially with this new section! I can’t wait to make new characters to use these dice on.” He takes handfuls of them and holds them up gleefully.
You interlock your fingers and place your hands on your heart. “Everyone here is thrilled to hear that you’re satisfied, Mr Henderson. Please, do not be afraid to call on me for any of your needs. I promise, I will deliver to you myself if that is what's needed.” You look around at all the flabbergasted faces of Dustin’s group, then once more at him to catch him mouthing a ‘thank you’ before he turns to face his friends again.
As you walk away, you hear him gloat, “You see? I am the nerd king! Bow down, bitches!” You take extra care in making sure the rest of the kids don’t see you accidentally laughing at the crack in his voice at that last part.
Eventually, things die down a little again, around the time most of the kids are going back home to their parents for dinner. Ralph looks almost completely wiped out, and you frown, “When was the last time you ate?”
Ralph shakes his head. “It’s fine, I told you I’d stay, I’m a man of my wor-”
You interrupt him, “You can’t teach me if you’re passed out. Just go grab a burger and some fries from the diner, as long as you’re back to teach me how to close up, I’ll be fine for a while yet.”
Ralph thanks you profusely as he leaves to go eat. Having to switch between tidying and ringing up really isn’t as bad as you were anticipating. A few angry people demanding certain issues that have already sold out don’t even phase you too much. 
As if by fate, you have a split second where it is just you and the stock out on the shop floor. You bask in the silence, the sheer amount of space without so many people crammed in every aisle… And then, in he walks. Grungy style, long dark hair, rings adorning every finger. He makes a beeline for the D&D section, immediately picking up a Player’s Handbook and skimming the pages delightedly. You watch him gleefully explore the store before eventually emptying his arms onto your checkout counter. His vibe is somehow nothing you’d expect from someone with his aesthetic, but also it all seems to… Fit him, somehow. He’s got the book, several dice sets, and a tray. “Just a few things, then,” you muse.
He chuckles, “Yeah, well. My old tray has not been holding well over my last campaign. The Hellfire club sure know how to cause total destructive mayhem even in this realm.”
“Ooh, Hellfire. Sounds official. You guys play for like, any special reason, or…?” You ask, but he shakes his head.
“Nope, I’ve just had waaaaay too much time to run my little old high school campaign. Being held back a couple years sure has its perks!” He takes a long, lingering look at you, and the tip of his tongue pokes out to lick his lips. “Sorry, uh, should probably introduce myself since you’ll probably be seeing me a lot around here now. I'm -”
You cock your head in curiosity, narrowing your eyes and smirking smugly as you figure out who he must be. “Eddie Munson?”
Eddie’s face falls. “Uh-oh. You don't know of Hellfire but you know of me? That can’t be good.”
Your eyes widen, “Oh, no, no, no! I promise it’s nothing bad, I - You helped Steve Harrington create a D&D character here the other day, right?”
The corners of Eddie’s lips twist into a smile, “I don’t think you could quite say that. I certainly tried to, but with little success.”
“Oh, well, yeah, but I - I found the sheet and I got bored so I…” You pull out your sketchbook you’d left tucked in the drawer beneath the counter and show Eddie your drawing.
He takes the book from your hands and starts running around the store, basically pressing his face into it. “Oh my god! This is incredible! And you did that based on what Stevie gave you? Oh, wait until we talk about my current party - Would you do commissions? Could you draw my current party’s characters and then also every one of my NPCs? I need your art to bring this campaign to life, now!”
Your cheeks flush a dark pink. “Oh, well… I’ve never been paid for my work before, and even then, this was just a bit of fun… I even had to get him to pose to get the hair just right since he wanted that in the drawing, too.”
Eddie stops his pacing and returns to you at the counter. He slides the sketchbook back over to you, rests his elbows on the counter and his chin on his fists as he looks to you. “And how much would it cost to have you draw me, then, huh?”
You finally get to talk to him undistracted long enough to get a proper look at his face. His eyes are dark brown, almost black, but not in a cold and uninviting way. His smile is infectious, crinkling the corners of his eyes as he does so. You eventually snap out of your daydream, clear your throat and say, “It wouldn’t be fair to charge you and not Steve… But then technically I didn’t draw Steve himself, just basically him as a half-orc, based on a few things he wrote.”
Stil resting his head on his fists, Eddie gently rocks his head from side to side, “So what’s my D&D alternative?”
“Hmm… You take your pencil out and tap it on your lower lip in thought. “I wanna say… Half-elf fighter who eventually becomes a bard. You got that sort of energy.”
Eddie grins. “Are you sure you haven’t done your research on me? You can’t have just guessed that I’m a musician.”
You gesture up and down in front of you, “I mean, look at you, dude.”
“Touche,” Eddie nods, moving to hold onto the counter with both hands and lean on it. “Yeah, I’ve got a band. Corroded Coffin. We’ve rocked the hell out of venues such as Gareth’s garage…” His tone suggests he’s about to list a number of venues, as does the way he taps one finger with the other, but he trails off after the first while pulling a face to show there’s no more. You laugh, and that goddamn smile of his returns. “Nah, we also have a regular spot, I shouldn’t complain. Suppose I should probably pay for all this, huh…” Eddie squints to read your nametag out loud.
You slap your palm to your face. “I've got to stop forgetting to introduce myself.”
“Hey now, I didn’t even get to, so now we're even!” Eddie points out. He looks at the dice towers situated next to you and lets out a low whistle. “Man, I’ve always wanted a tower, just for like… Real dramatic rolls. But I don’t know if I can justify paying that much in one go.”
A smirk creeps along our face as you come up with an idea, “How about a little bet?” You take out a random d20 from one of the jars on the other side of the counter, and pull a dice tower up in front of you, between you and Eddie. You hold the die between your finger and thumb, hovering it over the tower. “If this crits, you have to buy it right now.”
Eddie’s smile returns, “And what if it’s a natural one?”
“Then I pay for it for you,” you shrug. “Anything else, we leave it here.”
“I like those odds,” Eddie nods. “Let’s do it.”
You drop the die. It clatters between tiers of wood until…
“20?! No way.”
Your eyes widen. “Oh no, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to put you out of pocket! Let’s just forget the whole thing, it was just a joke -”
Eddie shakes his head. “I’m a man of my word. Guess I’m finally upping my game today.” He gives you a reassuring smile as he takes his wallet out. “So, uh, the party’s kinda full now, but if you ever wanted to just come watch a Hellfire game, we’d be more than happy to have you. We could even put you down as a reserve in case someone can’t make it, if you ever wanted to play!”
“We’ll see,” you give him a small smile. While this Eddie guy does seem sweet, you're still a little apprehensive from the last campaign you were in. 
“I’ll just keep coming by every day, as long as it takes to convince you,” Eddie singsongs, in a tone you’re comfortable enough with believing that it’s got friendlier intentions rather than insistent.
“That’ll be a waste then, since I’m not in every day,” you point out.
“Eh, then I just get to visit my good pal Stevie at the video store instead, I’m still good,” Eddie smiles before handing you an entire wad of cash. Your eyes widen, but you don’t ask any questions. You simply ring him up, give him his change and bag up his items for him. He grabs the bag and lifts it up in a farewell greeting. “See you ’round!”
You sigh wistfully to yourself, and hear a familiar voice pipe up next to you. “Alright, I believe you, perhaps Harrington’s not your man, after all.”
You jump at the sound of Ralph’s presence being so close before shaking your head, your face turning a deep shade of pink. “Shut up, so I’ve made conversation with two separate guys. That doesn’t mean anything.”
“Uh-huh. Sure. I’ll remember that one at your wedding,” he smirks.
“What is it with all of you and assuming I’ll find my future husband while working here?!” you ask exasperatedly before noticing some comics that had fallen behind a shelf that clearly need your full and urgent attention.
