Q: Did you ever think that Malkin was going to free agency?

A: I was, yeah, I was sweating. When it gets that close, you know how it is. Anything can happen and it was getting right down to the day. It was a lot of uncertainty. Especially it's hard, you know, late in the year. You know it's a possibility. You want to think positive and you want to be optimistic but it's still a chance that it might not happen so I think that uncertainty was tough. I'm sure it was for sure tough on those guys.

It was definitely for me, just not wanting to go there mentally. You're in the playoffs, you don't want to think this could  be our last game playing together but reality is it could have been so. It's great that they're back with us. They made me sweat for sure (laughs).

Q: I always thought Letang was gonna get done. I wasn't sure about Malkin but I always thought Letang was going to sign. In the 24 hour period from when he went from free agency to when he signs... You've always, you don't like anyone to talk about anything that you're asked about or anything  you say internally in the organization. But I wondered, Sid, if in this particular case, if you called someone or you did anything just to say Hey, we gotta work this out.

A: Yeah, I didn't have to do that. In all the situations I've been it's not typically something I do  but I mean especially in this one I think, it's pretty obvious how I feel. It's not like I have to declare that. I think it's pretty clear how I feel about those guys. What we've gone through. What they mean to the team. The fact that they're still paying at a high level. I don't think anybody had to ask me that to get a feel for it. So it didn't take much of that. If anything it was just me texting those guys "Is it done yet? What's going on?" Soo it was more of that.

Q: Do you think you guys will all retire together in Pittsburgh now?

A: That'd be amazing. I think that's something we'd love to do. We'd love to win again. Retire together, yeah, but I think kind of higher up on the list is winning together again. That's our motivation. Those guys are wired that way. They're not just playing to  retire in Pittsburgh. They want to win. And that's why they've had success as long as they have that bodes well for us if that's the case.
