Lament of a Fallen City

--prompt from @nosebleedclub "abandoned vineyard" (10 August)

Drink from the abandoned vineyards-- the grapes no longer provide good wine for the populace. But to see the vines whither and fall onto the ground like putrid flesh burning on stakes, it's an indictment for what we have become...

Hedonists without consciences, sparrows without song, bastards without the honor to shout their lineages through smoke and flame. We are characters in a tragedy with a derivative ending-- going further down the ranks until the line points at the horizon.

Where is God amongst ruins, in a crusade without distinction or purpose? Does the city wait for its next set of victims, those who still seek for their wealth rather than its actualization?

Its arrogance lays in a ruby necklace, its jewels bursting as it tarnishes the gold underneath. But when a sole soldier claims it for his newborn empire arriving on horseback and crying out to the sparrows.

They echo back their songs to the sanctuary herself, holding herself close to prevent anything from unveiling themselves in their glass cocoons.

And yet, they still prostrate in her light, while we dig ourselves in the darkness irresolute. --Elda Mengisto
