Some of the implications of Raj Malothra's regression into Rog Mandel in the presentation of DDLJ to a western audience:
*Desi men cannot be cute, charming and the epitome of the perfect romantic lead
*Pretty desi girls can be easily swept off their feet by a mediocre yt man. Simran was a smart educated and progressive woman, of course she would end up with a yt man.
*Desi dads with desi ideals are oppressive while the main leads now European father is cool and progressive
*Desi culture is backward and inferior
*Desi men are brutes that desi women should be saved from (simrans fiancee vs rog mandel)
*Whereas the appeal of the original was the message of diaspora Indians holding onto their culture as a connection to their ancestors home, the change of raj to rog in the narrative context of the story implies the opposite and paints diaspora desi women as rebelling against their culture in favour of a more progressive western one. Nothing wrong with rebelling against problematic aspects of culture, however it is problematic if it leads to an implication that another is superior.
*THAT SCENE WHERE HE JOKES THAT HE SLEPT WITH HER
*SRK disrespect
This isn't to say that desi culture isn't problematic or interracial romance is a bad thing. This particular story holds a lot of cultural significance in the way that characters were portrayed. If interracial and cross cultural relationships want to be explored, just write another story! Idk what else they will change but assuming that the core story line stays the same...

If reincarnation is real I wonder how many people stare at their own art in museums, listen to their own music they made in a different life and read books they don't remember writing

You cannot appreciate Rumi without appreciating Islamic scripture and thought. Orientalists have stripped his work out of its Muslim identity but that doesn't change the love he had for Allah and his prophet which was indeed a catalyst for the poetry that western audiences enjoy so much. So you cannot appreciate Rumi without appreciating Islamic scripture and thought. Orientalists like to push the narrative that great thinkers of Islamic origins are geniuses despite their religion. This is false and steeped in white supremacy okay ❤️

In English, we say: " Overthinking "
But in poetry, we say: " The storms in my head ruined the garden that my soul holds"
