Mind Reader (Bingo Game)
!BINGO ASKS CLOSED!
BuckyBarnes x Enhanced!Female!Reader
word count: 2.1k
warnings: pining, fluff, Bucky being very sweet but also self-sabotaging, language
Tumblr media
It started off like a whisper. You weren’t used to whispers. Normally, people talked to themselves in moderate volumes. Who would be afraid of their own thoughts after all? But Bucky was different. He was so different, in fact, that you had mistaken his thoughts for something entirely else.
You should go over to them, be part of the group. I can’t.
They were like conversations. But not like thoughts usually were. More like a constant...
No wonder nobody likes you. You’re a coward.
...fight.
Shut up.
You looked up at Bucky who was shaking his head with a frown over at the other end of the room. Wanda and Sam were standing by the window talking, laughing. Bucky was never part of it and it saddened you a little. Especially because he was actually very sweet. He just never showed it. But that’s why you liked to occasionally listen to his thoughts.
That was very well said, Steve. Good job.
It made you smile. And even though you had promised the team not to do it, sometimes, you couldn’t help yourself. He was just...
I like that braid Natasha did today, maybe she can braid my hair like that too.
...so...
This is the best food I’ve ever tasted. Wow, Sam.
..cute.
And that’s why you did it occasionally.
You got up from your seat at the kitchen island and walked over to the sink. Bucky stepped aside to give you space. He was still a little timid around everyone. You talked to him frequently though, trying to include him in activities and general conversation to make sure he didn’t feel left out. And he appreciated it.
“Thank you,” you whispered before passing him to leave the room.
Oh, wow. She smells very good. Don’t be a creep.
You bit back a smile before leaving, your heart skipping a small beat before settling in its pace again. Bucky was so endearing with his little compliments. But he would never dare say them out loud - not with that condescending voice he harbored as well.
You wanted to do something about it, but you also knew it would reveal your little secret of occasional drop-ins to his mind. And you were sure this was a boundary you couldn’t cross with Bucky yet. Steve? Sure, what was he going to do about it? Sam would probably close his ears to prevent you from listening to his thoughts - he didn’t think a lot of times... Nat would probably not mind at all, but Bucky? No, you didn’t know what it would do to him.
So you restrained. But it became harder and harder with time as Bucky’s thoughts turned in a direction neither of you had expected.
She looks so pretty today.
He was subtle at first, surprised by his own mind but somehow content. Over time, you looked at him afterward, he smiled, a small blush creeping over his cheeks to his ears. It was adorable.
He noticed things nobody else did. He had attention to detail, and he was so interested in the smallest of things you did.
Did she put on eyeshadow? Her eyes are shining. Not for you.
But it was always there, at the end of each compliment - ready to destroy the little warmth he spread in your heart - that voice. That annoying, down-talking, and toxic voice his mind hosted and that was nothing like the Bucky he revealed to the outside.
I wish I could hold her hand. She will run away from you.
Your heart clenched with every day his mind ruined the few soft moments Bucky allowed himself. You wanted to just grab him, squish him tight and tell that stupid voice to shut up. Because you did want to hold his hand during movie nights, or that day he noticed your new nail polish, or the time your fingers brushed against his when he handed you a mug. And it was killing you, tearing you apart from the constant tug of war his mind was playing.
You wanted to hear the compliments he thought of but at the same time, the flip side of his thoughts became more painful every time. Still, you challenged him, walked past him closer, looked at him longer, talked to him more - just to feel the goosebumps building when his kind words reached your mind. Unfortunately... just for them to be destroyed right after.
Her lips look so soft. I bet she’s a good kisser. Fucking creep.
So, you eventually got so used to listening, it became more and more difficult to distinguish thought from spoken words with time. You couldn’t stop, though, it was too thrilling - too nice to be appreciated.
You found yourself lingering in spaces Bucky was more often. Not necessarily talking, just being in the same place, stealing glances, listening to his mind - finding calm in the soothing tone of his silent monologues... however condescending they ended up being.
Right now, you were doing exactly that: Sitting in the common room, reading a magazine while Bucky sat across from you, mindlessly opening and closing his book, but you knew he wasn’t reading...
Imagine what it would be like to just be able to go over and sit next to her.
You smiled, biting your cheeks immediately.
Calling her my girl... Jesus, I don’t think I know how dating works anymore.
You stole a glance at him, but Bucky was looking down quickly, tracing the cover of his book with his index finger.
You will never find love again... that’s ok, it’s too overwhelming anyway.
This time, you had to will yourself to keep your eyes on the page. They hadn’t moved over a single word for the entire time. You shook your head, took a deep breath, and tried to actually read. Bucky’s mind was silent for some time, and as much as you liked hearing him, it was nice to not experience his sad thoughts.
After a while, you began to actually read. The article was actually somewhat entertaining, you should have done it sooner. Your eyes flew over the page, eating up the meaning behind the latest internet trend, your fingers flipping to the next page.
That outfit looks so good on her. That’s her color. I wish I had a color.
“It’s cerulean,” you laughed absentmindedly, your eyes nearing the end of the page.
“What?” Oh my god.
Oh shit. Your head shot up immediately, sight panic surging up your spine. “The answer for my crossword.” Close call.
You’d think that after this accident, you had gotten more careful, maybe stopped reading his mind so much. But something always drew you towards him. When Bucky was in the room, even Peter's weird and random rabbit hole thoughts seemed to move in the background.
You craved Bucky’s thoughts - they excited you, made you feel like no one else’s compliments ever did - so you didn't stop. But today, you actually wished you had...
Bucky’s mind was particularly gruesome today. He and Steve had just come back from a rather frustrating mission. Many pedestrians were injured, no targets contained - and it made the bad voice in his head take over.
You’re such a failure, Steve risked his life to save you and for what? For you to fuck it all up again.
The common room was empty when you heard it. You were the only one in the adjacent kitchen, Bucky’s thoughts preceding his entrance by a few seconds. When he entered, he stopped in his tracks, looked at you, and let a small “Hi.” Slip past his lips.
“Hey,” you responded sadly. There was no compliment today. His mind went back to his prior train of thought immediately.
“How are you?” You carefully asked to loosen the awkwardness, but Bucky just turned to the fridge with a gruff mumble.
“Fine.”
It would have probably been better for everyone if Hydra just had had its ways with me. Had me die of all the torture eventually. Then all of this would have never happened.
Tears sprung to your eyes at his thoughts. But it was even worse, you couldn’t help him - he had never really told you and it was eating you alive.
Everyone is just better off without me...
And then a slight sniffle escaped you, the tears running freely as you imagined Bucky not being part of your life. It was so sad that he couldn’t see how important he was to all of you. You especially. He had made your life at the compound so much brighter, was a thing you always looked forward to as a part of your day.
"Are you okay?” Bucky turned immediately, his eyes going wide when he saw your distraught face. You fucking idiot, of course she’s not okay. It’s probably your fault, too.
“Stop!”
“Stop what?” He moved closer. “Stop what?”
“The arguing, the- the constant downplay.” You wiped your tears but there was no use, fresh ones were already replacing them.
“Doll, I don’t know what you-”
You shook his frame, your hands wrapping around his biceps. “I need you! Nobody would be happier if you were dead!”
It was dead silent for a moment. You could watch as the confusion shook from Bucky’s face with every jolt you were giving him. But you didn’t care. It was enough - he was enough.
When your hands finally let go, Bucky cleared his throat, his eyes, however, never left yours.
"So you do read my thoughts.”
“I-“ but your mouth was faster than your mind. You didn't know what to tell him. You had promised the team to never do it. You knew it was a breach of privacy, a breaking of trust. Your head hung low as you avoided Bucky’s eyes. They weren’t furious, or confused - really, nothing you had imagined them to be if he ever found out. He was kind of... calm. As if something had been lifted off his shoulders - it must have been the closure you provided him with.
You dared to glance up again just to be met with that confusing look of his again, and the fact he wasn’t saying a thing made you panic. “I’m sorry, I was too curious. Because every time I...” You sighed, shoulders slumping in defeat. There was no use in defending your actions. “I’m sorry. I promised not to read your minds and I did it anyways. That’s not okay.”
But Bucky didn’t seem to listen to the words tumbling over your tongue in desperation. His brows were scrunched when his eyes flicked to the ceiling and then back to you. What the hell was this about?
“If you heard that... did you also hear my... you know...” Oh. Right. The compliments. How could you have forgotten? They were the very reason you were in this situation right now.
You breathed in deeply. “Yeah.” And it felt a lot better now that it had all been said.
“Oh.” Bucky’s cheeks tainted in pink when he turned in place awkwardly. But even though the kitchen was massive, there was no real hiding from you.
You watched as he shuffled in front of you, shifted his weight from one foot to the other, and looked anywhere but at you. And it reminded you of the Bucky only you got to experience in secret. The one whose thoughts never left that brain of his and it warmed you from the inside out again.
“Thank you,” you finally whispered, careful not to chase him away. Because it looked like he was about to bolt, though something was keeping him from doing so.
“For what?” Big blue orbs found yours again, intrigue and confusion weaving through his features - it was adorable.
You bit your lip. “All the compliments. You’re very charming, you know?” Part of you wondered if the old Bucky - 40s Bucky - was just like this. Innocently sweet, maybe with a hint of shameless flirting though. “You are such a great person, Bucky. If the others could hear how incredibly attentive you are. They would love to have you around more.”
Your hand reached out to touch his arm and the blush on his cheeks deepened.
“I’ll try,” he smiled, the tension from before seemingly forgotten in the vast kitchen.
You smiled as well, riding on a wave of confidence when you leaned forward to press a chaste kiss to his heated cheek.
Sweet Jesus, I think I’ll pass out.
You just chuckled and left. The other conversation hanging in the room had to wait for now. First, you wanted to see Bucky mingle with the crowd, get comfortable, then, you’d work on finally making him yours.

Chapter 2 << Chapter 3 >>
You can count the number of times you have felt such unbridled mortification on one hand. One was when you were playing the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz showcase during your elementary school talent show and, just as you got on the stage, could not for the life of you stop the unrelenting hiccups out of performance anxiety. Or, that one time in middle school, when you spilled all of your half-digested breakfast on the shoes of that one senior guy you had a crush on because you had a bad stomach flu.
This, you internally scream at yourself, is probably the most dread you have felt in all your adult years.
The receipt you can not avert your eyes from shakes between the tips of your index finger and thumb. Is it your hand that is shaking? You really can’t tell. Something bitter twists in your chest that makes you repeat as you squint your eyes at Hoseok. “What the fuck?!”
He looks at you stunned, but definitely not unprepared. He sighs deeply as he tries to console you, “I am here to help you with any concerns you might have.”
You snap your head to look at the rest of the people in the Cafe- Club- whatever this place is. There are various degrees of horrified looks on the faces of the other- are they supposed to be patrons or customers or-? God this is so confusing. You let out the longest sigh and your other hand, the one without that malignant piece of paper, rubs across your face.
“There is no way in hell I am paying this.” you declare, looking right back at Hoseok. Just minutes ago you would have never thought of him as someone you’d have talked to in this agitated manner but also minutes ago, he wasn’t a person who claimed you owed his establishment all your family assets and then some.
There is a loud scraping of a chair behind you and before you can turn to see who it is, Seokjin’s gentle voice is carrying through the room. “I am deeply apologetic to our guests tonight but due to unforeseen circumstances, the club will reschedule your time with the hosts at a later date. Kindly grant us an excuse this once.”
There are murmurs and hushed whispers behind you. The obnoxious sound of various people shuffling footsteps toward the exit amidst the awkward silence that had followed your outburst is acting as the fuel to the simmering rage in your chest. You feel more than see the icy glares people direct at you for ruining what was probably supposed to be a night of entertainment and good company for them. The thought makes you shudder as embarrassment crawls up your spine. You fix your gaze on your tapping shoe against the plush carpet and cross your arms in front of your chest.
“Now,” Seokjin continues once it is only you and the other hosts remaining, “What might be the issue, beautiful?”
You inhale deeply before you turn to him, expecting him to look irritated by you. Instead, his eyes are full of mirth as he lifts an amused eyebrow at you. His hands rest on the table in front of him, palms down as he leans his tall frame forward. It irks you.
“I said I am not paying that ridiculous amount for a coffee I did not even finish. You can not make me.”
Seokjin’s lips form a small o shape as he pretends to sincerely consider your words. “It is not the coffee you are paying for though, darling. That is complimentary.” He says it like it is obvious. You feel a familiar twitch in your temple. “You are paying for the additional services you have utilized this evening.”
You can feel yourself seething but for the sake of not becoming liable to any property damage, you reign your fury. “I will do no such thing. I had no idea what kind of an establishment this is.”
“We keep that in mind.” Taehyung intervenes, his dark brown eyes sparkling at you intently. “Besides the several, and might I remind you, very prominently displayed boards with our club trademark, the first visits to the guests are usually not chargeable, a free trial if you will.”
“You, however, took four of us with you, to your apartment no less, and Namjoon Hyung even did locksmithing for you.” Jungkook adds from where he is standing next to Taehyung. He smirks at you, and it takes everything in you from banging your fist on the nearest table.
“He offered!” You argue, wincing at the sound of your voice.
“He is supposed to. Accepting is completely beholden to you.” Seokjin adds with a tilt of his head to the left that you can only assume to be satirizing. “The club hosts offer services to the guests and if they choose to accept them, they are liable to the charges.” he says, shrugging those ridiculously broad shoulders of his nonchalantly.
You scoff at this, your glare now directed at Namjoon, who to his credit looks like a big puppy that has been reprimanded by his owner for bringing the newspaper in the mornings, only slightly covered in drool.
Your shoulders slump in defeat. They are not wrong, you think. When you enter a place that offers you any kind of service, and you make use of said service, you are, as a consumer obliged to pay the fee for that service. “I can not pay that amount. I do not have that kind of money.” At this, the room falls into silence. God, these hosts must earn so much that the concept of living paycheque to paycheque must be alienating to them.
After what seemed like an eternity, when it was probably only six minutes tops, Jimin who had been sitting on his chair quite comfortably so far takes an exaggerated inhale before intoning, “Well, we might be able to offer you something to help with that.”
You look at him sheepishly and he continues, “If you can not pay us in terms of funds, pay us in service.”
What the hell is that even supposed to mean? Is this like some sort of hidden camera prank? Are Pauly and Vinny about to come burst down the doors as a cameraman pushes his gigantic camcorder in your face yelling “You just got MTV pranked!”
Your bewildered expression must have been too obvious because Jimin adds “I am serious. Work for us.”
Now you are even more confused. Work for them? As an employee? You can not be a host. You have a day job. A job that feels like going through the depths of hell every day, but a job nonetheless. Your tongue twists in your mouth as you try to swallow saliva down your dry throat. “What does that mean?”
“You said you worked at LinkSol, right? By Hwan Sana?” Jimin asks and it's as if he just talked about Voldemort judging by the dramatic gasp from Seokjin’s lips and his hand on his chest, clutching pearls. “You should come work for us, as our manager. Trust me, you’d be doing yourself a favor too.”
“That’s your solution? Servitude compulsory labor?” you resign. “Do you think we are in the 17th century?” Change is not a friend to you. Yes, your job is torture but you’ve grown accustomed to the routine. This is asking a lot of you.
“Why, you got something better?” he counters. “We can not waive off your fee, you can not pay it to us. We have an open position and you are at a shitty job. The way I see it, there are no losing parties.”
“You will get to work stable hours that are open to negotiation. We will pay you a salary, also negotiable, from which we will deduct a monthly interest that will serve as your payment.” Jimin pulls out his phone and taps away for a few seconds before humming to himself and adding, “It will take you about 18 months to pay off everything and then you are free to discuss the position as you wish.”
18 months? That does not seem like enough time to pay off everything, does it? Exactly how much are they planning to give you as a salary? Before you can ask, you bite your tongue, wise words from your mother at your college graduation dinner resounding in your head, “Never let an employer know you were expecting less payment for your hard work than what they offered you. They must recognize some worth in you that you may be oblivious to.”
You furrow your eyebrows, trying to paint the most corporate expression on your face as you return a single nod toward Jimin. “That seems reasonable, but I would like to discuss everything from the profile and my responsibilities openly before deciding.” Jimin presses his thick lips in a flat line, nodding his agreement.
“Of course, take your time. We can set up a formal meeting anytime you want this week,” he informs.
“And,” you interrupt, suddenly remembering how you got yourself in this position in the first place, “I want it all in writing. No more errors in intentions.”
There is a cough from behind you by Yoongi which sounds suspiciously like a chocked back chuckle. Jimin too bites the inside of his cheek, eyelashes fluttering as he nods again. “We will make sure.”
“Now that all that is over can we please just have something to eat Hobi Hyung? I am starving here.” Jungkook sighs dramatically. “And you, come sit with us, we are not working anymore and I know you are exhausted so you might as well eat now.”
You eye him suspiciously. The other boys all walk up to his table as Namjoon and Hoseok go back toward the kitchen. Even though you trudge over to his table, you can’t help but snark at him, “Would this not be added to my debt to you?”
“Fiesty.” he grins and pulls out a chair for you. “And no. Like I said, we are off work so consider this just a dinner with your future colleagues.”
You hum dejectedly as you sit at the table with your arms still crossed over your chest. This evening has been a year’s worth of events for you and you seriously can not keep your head up anymore. So you lay your head on the soft white satin tablecloth and groan mutely to yourself.
“It won’t be that bad working here, pretty girl. You’ll see.” Taehyung says softly from where he sits beside you. You raise your head at him, without straightening your back completely, and are surprised to find him looking at you with no more amusement, just what seems like empathy. Your heart betrays you by fluttering. Why do all of them have to be so attractive? It would be so easy to hate them right now if that wasn’t going on. Life is so unfair.
Seokjin’s hand rests on your shoulder giving it a slight squeeze. “You are so knackered. What were they making you do at LinkSol?”
It is a rhetorical question, you know that, but you’d just love to dump all of your exhausting work stories on someone if only you had the energy to do that. So you just whine noncommittally and put a pin on telling those stories some other day. After all, they are going to be your “colleagues” as they said. Seokjin takes your palm in his and gently starts to massage your hand. His large hand engulfs yours as his thumbs press into the center of your palm. You give him a confused stare.
“What?” he questions softly.
“What are you doing?” you ask, pointing your nose down to where he is still caressing your hand.
“What does it look like I am doing? I am helping you.” he says it like it is the most obvious thing you could have asked him.
“Don’t think so deeply about it, sweetheart,” Jungkook says as he grins softly at you, “Hyung has a habit of doing things like that. Just let it be, he means no harm.”
“Yeah, but he is annoying as hell.” Taehyung chips in.
This makes a scowl appear on Seokjin’s face. “I taught you better than that, you shameless brat.”
“You didn’t teach me shit.” Taehyung gruffs, although he does seem to quiet down after that.
Jimins rolls his eyes at the both of them and diverts his attention back on you. “I have a better question. I get it about Jin Hyung, he gives off that vibe,” which you think is a slight hidden in the guise of a statement towards Seokjin, “but you didn’t think that we were acting… unusually, around you?”
To be honest, yes. It was definitely strange how these incredibly attractive men were the embodiment of cats with a ball of yarn with you, but that is the point. You were so distracted by the way they looked and how they were very obviously flirting with you that you never even questioned why. You weren’t going to tell them that though. How flustering that idea is, makes a sheen of sweat break out on your hairline. “N-no. I didn’t think of it as anything out of the ordinary.”
It seems like you picked the wrong choice because an impish grin curves along Jimin’s lips as his eyes linger on yours. “So it is a normal occurrence for you. People just flirt with you wherever you go?”
When he puts it like that, it makes your cheeks burn. It is further compounded by Taehyung who admonishes Jimin, “C’mon, Hyung! Stop teasing the poor girl.” He gives you a smirk and a dramatic once-over, before adding “I mean look at her. I wouldn’t dream otherwise”
The way his gaze is suddenly heated makes you choke on your own spit a little. Your heart stutters in your ribcage. Even Yoongi who has been decidedly quiet this entire time leans forward on the table from across you. “Cute.” he mutters, his sharp eyes boring straight into you.
Jimin sighs a deep breath. He plays with the button on the cuff of his shirt as he looks down at the table, “I am not questioning it. I just don’t think I like the idea too much.”
What was that about being “off work”? Aren’t they supposed to not be this charming anymore? Then why are they so intent on making you feel so bashful?! Before you can put too much thought into the matter, the doors to the kitchen open, and Namjoon and Hoseok carry with them two large trays full of food and coffee. As soon as the trays are placed on the table, Hoseok wraps his arms around you, pressing his chest to the back of your chair.
“I am sorry that this is how things turned out, angel.” he whines and Namjoon gives you a small smile as he takes a seat beside Seokjin, “Look on the bright side though. Now we can share all the sweets we want and play together.” he giggles. You smile gratefully at his optimism.
Maybe it won’t be that bad, you think as Jungkook passes you a plate of sandwiches. They seem like nice people, they are allegedly paying you a much better salary than you get at your job, and if nothing else, at least they are a nicer view instead of the drab walls of your office.

Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Shy!Wifey warnings: this is a bit dark. . . mentions of break ins, blood, hiding, fear, guns, swearing, happy ending tho:) Hangman Masterlist | Opposites Attract Masterlist Main Masterlist 3 fucking K celebration
Tumblr media
"There's been a series of break-ins in the Sunset Hills neighborhood, which has residents on alert. Channel 10 news is-"
Jake clicked the tv off and Y/N gasped, looking over her shoulder and seeing her husband standing there, his arms folded across his chest.
"Hi," She smiled sheepishly.
"Hi yourself," He answered, "What are you doing?"
"Oh, just watching the news," Y/N pushed herself up from her spot on the couch. She walked to her husband and draped her arms around his neck, "Have I told you how much I love you?"
"I told you to quit reading into all that stuff. You're not sleeping."
Y/N sighed, she had been caught yet again. Ever since the first break in about two months ago, she had been on high alert and respectfully so. Although the chief of police told the neighborhood that no one was in danger, Y/N still felt unsafe every time she'd go to bed at night. The thieves weren't robbing houses if the occupants were home. They weren't hurting anyone or anything, but were stealing thousands of dollars and destroying property.
"I have a right to know what's going on, Jake!" Y/N argued, "I need to know what to look for incase-"
"That's not going to happen, alright," Jake said, and put his hands on her hips, "We have the best security that money can buy. Every window is armed, every door to the house is armed. Plus, we have Bucky and Steve." Jake gestured to one of the German shepherds that they owned, who was asleep at Y/N's feet. Steve was more than likely sleeping by Alex's feet.
"It still doesn't help me sleep at night," She mumbled, "But it brings me some comfort."
"I know baby, it's scary, but I'm not going to let anything happen to you or my family. Understand?" Jake asked and Y/N nodded, "Now, let's go back to bed. I have like. . . three more hours of shut-eye."
--- --- ---
Dinner at the Seresin house was always chaotic, especially when Jake wasn't there to help. It was just Y/N trying to get Alex and Ella ready for dinner. Life was hard with two toddlers, especially now that Ella started walking. It seemed like every time Y/N turned her back, Ella was pulling something to the ground or sticking something in her mouth.
Jake had texted her and told her that she was going to be late, which made her frown as she sat at the dinner table, a child on either side of her. Alex was good about feeding himself, and Ella liked to throw scraps on the floor for the dogs.
"Ella, stop feeding Bucky and Steve," Y/N scolded the little girl, who just gave her a smile before throwing yet another piece of food on the floor, "Oh you are going to be so much like your father."
"Dada!" Ella exclaimed and clapped her hands together.
"Mommy, can I have ice cream?" Alex asked and Y/N looked at her little boy who had spaghetti sauce all over his face.
"Not tonight baby, it's bath and bed," Y/N said and Alex nodded.
The sun was already down, and it sent a shiver up Y/N's spine as she carried her daughter up the stairs, Alex going in front of her. She made sure all the doors were locked as soon as she came home. She also left her car in the driveway, alerting whoever might be lurking that she is home. Jake had asked their neighbor, Paul, a retired Admiral to keep an eye on the house when he wasn't home.
Once the kids were bathed and put in their pajamas, Y/N put them to bed in her room. She had texted Jake again asking where he was, but he said he was trying to get home as soon as possible. Him and Rooster were way behind on reports. Y/N sighed as she rubbed Ella's belly as she drank a bottle before bed. She read the kids a bedtime story. When she was done, she put Ella in her pack-in play and turned the lamp off. Alex snuggled up to her, and put his thumb in his mouth, his bad habit that Y/N and Jake tried to break.
Bucky laid on the floor at the foot of the bed, while Steve laid on the bed, their heads up and turned towards the door, waiting for their other owner to return home. Neither one never truly went to sleep until all of their humans were home and in their shared bed, with them curled up at their feet. Dogs were smart, and Bucky and Steve had figured there was something changing with Y/N, and had spent more time connected to her and watching over her. Bucky let out a sigh, and lowered his head to rest in between his two front paws, eyes never leaving the door.
Sleep didn't come easy to anyone in the bedroom, but once Y/N heard Ella stop fussing and turning, she finally rested a bit, still holding on to Alex. The sound of smashing glass had Y/N, Bucky and Steve up in an instant. Y/N gasped and looked around the room. Steve had jumped down and stared at the door, as he was anticipating someone or something. Bucky had gotten up too, and moved over to Ella's bed, standing protectively. Y/N jumped out of bed, grabbing your phone and holding a sleeping Alex to her chest.
She looked around the room, and went to the bathroom attached to their room. Alex woke up a bit at the jostling of his body and groaned in his sleep. His green eyes opened up to see Y/N in a panic set him down on the hard tile of the bathtub.
"Mom-"
"Shh," Y/N shushed him and grabbed a blanket, "Cover your head, be quiet." Alex nodded, too scared to say anything. She then went to the pack-in play and reached in, grabbing Ella, when she heard footsteps and voices. Steve growled and Y/N shushed him. She rushed to the closet and set Ella down with her brother.
"Hold on to Ella," Y/N told Alex and he nodded, taking Ella into his arms. Luckily, the little girl was a heavy sleepier and was still asleep. She turned the lock, and shut the door, locking the kids inside. Y/N felt her heart racing as she grabbed the pairing knife she kept underneath the mattress. She dialed 9-1-1 and held the phone to her ear as the footsteps got closer.
“I’m armed and calling 9-1-1!” Y/N yelled, hoping to scare off whoever was in her house. Bucky had moved over to the bathroom door, while Steve was still pointed at the door. Y/N moved and ran to her bedroom closet, hiding inside.
“9-1-1, what is your emergency?”
“H-hi, I think someone just broke into my house," She whispered, "I-I have kids with me."
"Ma'am, someone has already called it in, and a unit is on the way. Where are you located?"
"My kids are in the bathroom, I locked it. I'm hiding in the closet. My dogs are in the room."
"Are you armed?"
Y/N looked down at the knife in her head and let out a shaky breath, "Yes. But please hurry I think-"
Her words got cut off by the bedroom door opening and the dogs barking. Y/N clamped her hand over her mouth as she dropped the phone and held onto the knife tightly, ready to use it if needed.
--- --- ---
Jake’s eyes were straining as he drove home on the dark streets. Everything was closed, and the only thing illuminating the night sky were the street lights. He was hoping to be home earlier than two in the morning, but time had slipped past Rooster and him. Jake had to finally call it quits and go home to his family. He had been away from them all day, and his body was starting to shut down.
Except when Jake turned the corner to his street, he was met with the bright flashing lights of cop cars and ambulances. He felt bile rise in his stomach as he parked his truck, and jumped out, running towards the crowd of onlookers in their bathrobes and pajamas. The closer he got to the scene the more he recognized the cops walking around his house. He felt bile rise in his throat as he ran to the police barricade.
"Sir, you can't go through," An officer said, stopping Jake from pushing through the yellow tape.
"That's my house!" Jake yelled, pointing at the house, "That's my family!"
"Sir, it is an active crime scene," The officer said and Jake felt his knees go weak. He looked around the scene, running a hand down his face as he spotted his kids sitting in the back of an ambulance. Jake pushed his way through, despite the various officers trying to hold him back.
"Sir!" An officer grabbed him as Jake approached his kids.
"Daddy!" Alex yelled.
"Those are my kids! Those are my fucking kids!" Jake yelled, fighting against the cops hold.
"Let him go," Another cop said, and Jake was freed from the constraint. He ran straight for Alex and hugged him.
"Are you okay?" Jake asked, and looked over his son and then at the medic who was holding his daughter.
"They are both fine, sir," The medic said and handed Ella to Jake. He held his daughter tightly and placed a kiss on the top of her head, drinking in the familiar scent of her baby shampoo.
"My wife?" Jake asked, "W-where is she?"
"They took her to the Memorial, just to get some of her injuries checked out," The medic answered and Jake felt his heart stop. Alex tugged at his hand and Jake looked at his son.
"The police officer said mommy's a hero," Alex said and Jake nodded.
"Yeah, she is," Jake said, "Come on, let's go find her."
The hospital was nearly empty as Jake walked through the door, Ella on his hip and Alex holding his hand. A nurse directed him to where he could find his wife's room at. Jake was expecting the worse, as he walked down the hall towards her room. An older nurse was staying with the kids in the lobby. Jake didn't want to scar them by seeing their mother in a bad condition.
But when Jake opened the door to her room, he was met with the sight of her practically unharmed. Her face was turned away from the door, and she looked to be sleeping peacefully. He couldn't see any injury from that far away, but the closer he got, the more he could see.
"Sweets?" Jake called out softly. Y/N jumped a bit and then turned to look at her husband. His heart fell into his stomach as he saw her bruised face, "Oh my god."
"Cops said I put up one hell of a fight," She smiled, her busted lip cracking. Jake gently touched her face. Her nose was broken and was displaying a magnificent purple and blue bruise underneath her eyes. Her eyebrow had been cut and stitched up as well.
"I am so sorry," Jake sniffled, "I should've been home. I should've-"
"So you can look like this too?" Y/N asked and Jake shook his head, "We are okay. A little shaken up, but they caught the guys doing all this. No one got hurt, no one is seriously injured. We are okay."
Jake nodded and ran his thumb over her cheek bone, "I'm just glad you're okay."
"I am too," Y/N said, "I love you Jake."
"I love you too," Jake kissed her forehead.

'thank you again for allowing me a part time here' you gave the man a smile as he welcomed you into the small café uzunaki, he reciprocated before responding 'it's no problem, it may not be the busiest place but help is appreciated'. truth be told, you moved to yokohama a few days ago and you were in the middle of job hunting here, so you decided to earn atleast some income bt working at a local café. it was only meant to be a part time job to tide you over until you could find somewhere else so you assumed that the quaint café would offer a nice way to pay your bills.
the owner gave you a quick tour of the café before showing you the ins and outs of how to make some popular drinks. 'like i said, we don't really have many customers so we only have one other waitress but the customers we do have are regulars' you finished the latte he instructed you to try making and slided it over to him and enquiring 'who are the regulars?', he took a quick sip before nodding in approval and adding 'the local agency, an interesting bunch that come here practically every day' he paused and pointed to a small post it on the counter 'may want to get familiar with those orders'. you nodded before taking a quick look.
you finished your first day by practicing making a variety of the drinks and plating of food while the owner gave you hints and tips. the café didn't actually open that day, so you appreciated having the time to learn in peace - the other waitress visited for a while to meet her new coworker and even helped you learn some trickier drinks to brew. it really seemed like the perfect way to open up your new life in yokohama.
the next day was your first proper shift, it was up until lunch time and then you offered a few hours toward the closing shift. a simple day that made you rather glad you landed this job. the owner was there to open up the shop and soon retreated elsewhere when he made sure you were okay with everything. a couple of early morning workers stopped by and ordered basic coffee's so your real challenge was when an eccentric ravenette burst through the doors followed by a decent sized group. there was the ravenette, a tall brunette, a taller blonde and a ginger haired boy with a black haired girl hanging off his arm - you didn't quite know what to expect with them but you vaguely remember some of them from descriptions about the agency members.
as soon as they sat down in a booth you picked up your small notepad and walked over to the table, almost immediately the brunette spoke up 'i didn't know the old man hired a new waitress?' he stared at you for a second before complaining 'what? don't kick me' he stared down the blonde opposite him and before either of them could speakthe ginger haired boy caught your attention 'you are new aren't you? don't mind them-' he was cut off with the ravenette's declaration for his usual, extra sweet, and the blonde sighed before adding 'we will all have our usual please'. you simply nodded and went to search for the post it on the counter to look for their orders, the only issue was that you didn't know any of their names so you didn't really know what order went with who.
well you could figure out the eccentric raventte easily as he wanted it extra sweet and you could take an effective guess that the blonde man would want the order that simply read 'black coffee' but the other three were a bit difficult. you eventually managed to guess that the two part order belonged to the duo and had managed to overhear the name 'dazai' while making the orders and assumed that would be the brunette. now you just had to finish making the orders.
if kunikida didn't have half the patience he did, he reckoned he would have jumped across the table and beat dazai senseless already. he knew his coworker was a bit of a slacker and easily would be distracted with the idea of asking a woman to perform 'double-suicide' with him but today was just not the day to deal with him. kunikida could take a guess that it didn't help that you were new, he didn't want you to quit your job because dazai was an idiot - the whole reason they were here was to talk about the tiger case but dazai really couldn't keep his focus.
your cheery voice broke him out of his thoughts and he thanked you for dealing with them, you smiled back and went to clear up the empty cups left by the previous patron. eventually they managed to finalise a plan and decided to report back to the office to set out, unfortunately both dazai and ranpo seemed to forgets you were a new waitress and left as usual expecting you to immediately add it to their tab. kunikida sighed and noticed how you looked slightly panicked taht they just left so he let tanizaki and naomi go ahead and he walked over to you behind the counter.
'the agency has a tab set up, please exuse their rude behaviour' he explained and you slowly remembered the owner explaining something about that so you went to check. kunikida glanced over and asked out of pure concern 'do you know how to access it?' you smiled and responded 'i remember being told how, give me a second and i'll remember'. kunikida waited until you managed to add to their tab and informed you that he'd send them back down to apologise and you only stiffled a laugh before adding 'no need, i should've remembered who you guys were'.
you left during lunch and greeted the other waitress when she came in as you left, you greeted her again when you joined her for the closing shift. the last customer was a dark haired woman, she spotted you when you came in and introduced herself as yosano - one of the other agency members. she told you how she heard about the morning mishap and told you that you might have to get used to them behaving like that, then she left and informed you that she'd be the unfortunate recipient of their presnce soon.
your next shift was another early one, this time your first customers where the same brunette you know knew for sure was dazai, the duo which you again now knew as tanizaki and naomi, kunikida and a new white haired boy. you were lucky enough that the other waitress was there with you this time and she offered to take the table - you looked away to clean out a few cups and by the time you looked back kunikida had smacked dazai over the head and the other waitress walked away from dazai. she smiled at you before telling you that you should ignore anything dazai said to you. you stared at her with confusion.
within the first couple of weeks you had grown quite accustomed to working at the café - and unfortunately came to learn what the other waitress warned you about with dazai. the agency members all had their unique quirks and you didn't know if you should be proud that you knew their orders off by heart, over patrons were also equally nice to talk to but the agency were the most common guest. you had almost forgotten completely about your attempts to find another job and most of the messages you got back from places offering interviews were forgotten - the café was a job that you even considered working full time sometimes.
if you had to pick a favourite agency member, you'd probably have to say kunikida. from day one, he had helped you with the slight inconveniences some of the agnecy members gave you when they visited - mainly dazai and ranpo and sometimes kenji but that was when he tried bringing one of his cows into the café. kunikida was also quite the good listener and talker, it felt unprofessional at first when you starrted telling him about how you ended up in yokohama but he did ask you how you landed the job and seemed to show genuine interest. you also enjoyed listening to him talk about some of the agency's stories while you closed up for the night.
kunikida always seemed to visit later at night or early in the morning. if it was early in the morning he would be accompanied by a few agency members and he would order a black coffee, if it was before closing he would sit on the chairs at the counter and have - depending on his day - either another black coffee or simply a glass of water. kunikida didn't really notice how much he visited the café during your shifts until dazai pointed it out to him obnoxiously loud in the café while you were within hearing distance, you either pretended not to hear or were too engrossed in a task to notice.
although after dazai pointed it out, kunikida really couldn't help but read his book of ideals and think about you. sure you didn't cross of all the requirements for his ideal lover but this was the first time he felt like he could make a few exceptions. maybe it was the fact that you were so hardworking that helped attract him to you initially and maybe it was your personality that kept him longing for another interaction. he would always ask you about your plans for the future and whenever you told him you were still looking for a job it pained him for some reason but for the time being you always assured him you had no plans on leaving soon.
it got so painstakingly obvious to over members of the agency that kunikida was in fact pining for you, that yosano told him to pack his ideals to the side and ask you out before it was too late. the only issue was that kunikida wasn't sure on how to go about it and he could only think of one way, one really cringey way that was going to be something yosano and dazai would forever tease him with.
you watched kunikida enter through the café's door and you smiled at him before taking a drink to another customer, you swiftly returned to behind the counter and said 'what will it be today hm? let me guess a coffee?' he let a small smile crack his face before he nodded and hesitantly added 'yeah, but it'd like it with a few sugars today'
'what gives huh?' you questioned and almost liked he'd rehearsed this exact scenario he answered immediately 'i just reckon it's time to add something sweeter to my life'. you would normally brush this off but he was sttaring at you so intently that you, felt a bit confused, you also swore you saw a faint blush on his face. 'what do you mean kunikida?' he let out a long sigh before looking back at you directly 'you don't mean..' you trailed off slightly before taking a full understanding of the situation. you smiled and responded confidently 'well maybe i should try adding a handsome blonde man into my life' you laughed as he deadpanned at you. eventually he started looking a bit more hopeful
'does this mean-'

The ceiling rattles.
"So. How'd you get here today?"
"I, uh... I took my cyclizar?"
Rika nods and takes note of the answer. The not-so-distant sound of muffled battling can be heard through the thick walls of the League building.
"What brings you to the Pokemon League today?" Rika goes on as if nothing is happening.
"Badda!" The little one sitting on her lap shouts. Rika pats his head without looking away from the student in front of her. "Shh. Let her answer my questions first."
Basil babbles a bit in response, some of his words making sense.
"To...become a champion?" The student replies.
"Good, good..." Rika continues on with the rest of the interview, asking different questions and going back and forth with the kid in front of her.
"Okay," She says later, now addressing Basil. "Now you can ask her a question."
"What?" The student asks.
"Not you." Rika corrects tersely. "Go on, Munchkin. Ask the champ-in-the-making whatever you want."
"Um... " Basil seems to think for a moment, but then he gets shy and hides his face against Rika's torso.
The student blanches. "I... I-I'm sorry? Did I do something wrong?"
"Pssh, nah. He just gets timid sometimes is all. But let's see..." Rika leans into Basil and speaks soft and sweet to him. "Whaddya think, Munchkin?" She gives his tummy a bit of a tickle, making him laugh and open up a bit. "Does this kid pass our test?" Rika keeps tickling him as he shrieks with laughter.
"Uh....Is...is that a yes?" The student eventually asks.
Rika pauses, then stands with all the pomp and importance of one in her station, propping the baby up in her arms.
"Yeah, I'd say so." She announces casually, in stark contrast to the serious air she feigned just a moment ago. "Congrats, Kid. You've passed your first test." She holds out a hand to shake and makes sure that Basil also gets to shake too.
Never too soon to start teaching the ins and outs of professionalism or whatever.
"Before you move on to the next step, you'll just need to wait a few minutes for his mama to finish her battle with one of your peers. Once she has him back, I can start your battle test. Sound good?"
The student nods, and sure enough within a few minutes, you arrive through the elevator and greet the room cheerily.
"We've got quite a few challengers today, it seems!" You announce as you take Basil from Rika. The boy had been making grabby hands for you the moment the elevator doors had opened, speaking in broken little syllables of his desire to be in your arms again.
You boop his little nose and smoosh your mouth to his pudgy cheeks in a kiss. "I wasn't gone that long, Sweet Boy!" You tell him. "Were you good for Auntie Rika?"
You look to the woman in question for her assessment.
"He did great. He's getting a real knack for these interviews, I tell you what. Asks some pretty insightful questions, right, Kid?" She says jokingly, turning to the student.
"What?" The kid looks between the three of you. "Oh! Um. ...What? Is this another test?"
Rika laughs. "Everything here is a test."
The student blanches a bit. "Oh... Then. Um. What was the question again?"
Rika ruffles the kid's hair. "Yeah, that's about par for the course. Don't worry about it. You're doing fine." She turns to face you. "For real though, Basil was great. He ate all his snacks and took a great long nap earlier and slept through all the noise of the battling. Super well behaved.” You smile at the comments, your heart swelling with pride as Rika goes on. “So you're headed out then?"
You nod, adjusting Basil on your hip as he starts to fiddle with a button on his overalls.
"Yup. Today's the day!"
Rika whistles. "Well good luck. Lemme know if you end up needing anything, yeah?"
You nod. "Thanks, will do. It should be fine though. Basil, say 'bye-bye!'"
"Bye-aye!" He mimics, waving at Rika.
"Say 'Good luck, Challenger!'"
"Goobuh, tsaduh!"
You laugh and ruffle his hair while the student gives him a determined thumbs up.
"Good job." You murmur into his sweet little head.
You grab the rest of yours and Basil's things and leave the Pokemon League building. You thought it'd do your team some good to get some energy out before their big event today, so you convinced Rika to let you take on some of the Champion Testing battles.
Within an hour or so, you're in the meadows out by Medali with a picnic set up.
Basil is seated in a bouncing little chair that meets the height of the picnic table, and you're finishing up the preparation of food for him and the pokemon.
You kneel down to help him handle his sippy cup.
"Are you excited, my littlest?" You ask him, as he babbles happily. "I'm excited, too."
It had taken you a decent amount of time to build up your courage to quite this stage.
Sure, all your Pokemon met Basil back when he was just a little potato of a thing, barely had his eyes open and could really only eat, sleep, cry, and sometimes pull your hair. But you knew back then that having your Pokemon out and about in the house, within the grasp of a little person who could easily get hurt or unintentionally piss them off was a recipe for trouble.
So your Pokemon were temporarily kept separate from your son for everyone's sake. Of course you still saw them and cared for them and battled with them, but never when Basil was around.
Now he's...he's more like a real person. Now he can run around and play. He's still learning words, but he has thoughts and can speak for himself and understand many things about the world around him. Sometimes so much so that it surprises you!
So. You can trust him enough and teach him how to behave around Pokemon.
You know your team as well as, if not better than, you know your son. You know they won't hurt him.
Still... Tinkaton's hammer is so heavy...and Skeledirge's flames burn so hot... And Raidon...
But no!
You can't keep your loves apart like this any longer!
It feels like it's been ages.
You look back to Basil and swipe your thumb across his cheek where some juice left him sticky.
"Oh, you sweet creature. Are you ready to meet Mama's friends?"
"Mama!" He chatots back to you.
"Okay, Basil." You lay out all six PokeBalls before him. "Take your pick for who you wanna meet first, okay?"
Your boy regards the PokeBalls with shining, eager eyes. He's seen these before. Chubby fingers grasp at a red and white ball. Your oldest.
"Oooh, that's a good one, my love." You say, rolling the ball gently along the table's surface with a single finger, though never removing it from Basil's grip.
"My very, very best friend is inside here." You lean in close and whisper dramatically, making Basil giggle. "But you won't tell the others, yea? He and I have been together for longer than anyone else. He's super excited to meet you. Wanna say hello?"
Basil nods.
"Can you hand me the PokeBall?"
He picks it up, having to hold it with both hands as he maneuvers the thing to your outstretched palm.
"Very good, Basil! Alright. Let's meet Skeledirge!"
You toss the ball into the air, with only a little more than your usual flare that you have when you battle, and the big, beautiful crocodile materializes with a thud on the ground in front of the table. It rears back on its hind legs and gives a mighty roar.
Basil, for his part, stands as best he's able in his chair, with you holding a supporting hand behind his back, to watch the spectacle, clapping his hands at the pokemon before him.
"Keledur!" He shrieks, delighted, before moving to climb down and onto the ground.
You lift him up easily enough and prop him against your hip, but Basil wants no part of being held when something so cool is nearby. "Whoa whoa whoa, wiggle wurmple." You tell him. "We gotta learn how to say hello to Skeledirge, yeah?"
"Hello, Skel'dur!" Basil mimics automatically, still squirming.
Skeledirge has the patience and wherewithal to stay planted while you wrangle the little one to stand in your lap as you sit cross legged in front of the Pokemon.
"Okay, Basil. Now, you need to be gentle with Pokemon. They're our friends, so we always need to be nice. Can you say 'nice'?" You take both of his hands in yours.
"Mm..." He corrects the sound. "Nnnnice!"
"Very nice! Good job! So when we pet Pokemon, we have to be very nice." You help him lean in toward Skeledirge, placing his hand on the Pokemon's nose, just to the side of the tiny firebird, which graciously hops out of the way. "See? Nice. Gentle..." You help him repeat the petting motion.
Basil squeals delightedly, petting Skeledirge's snout as he stomps his feet between your legs.
The Pokemon grumbles softly and shuts his eyes, relaxing into the ground a bit.
"Aw, Skel'dur go slee'?" Basil asks you, as he keeps petting the massive creature. "'Ats okay, Skel'dur. You go slee'. Shh... Shh..."
"Good job, Basil..." You tell him, whispering into the soft bits of fluffy hair behind his ears. "You're being so nice to Skeledirge! While he naps, do you wanna try and meet someone else?"
Basil turns to face you and nods excitedly, gripping the hem of his shirt in his little hands.
You stand and lead him back to the table where the other balls are.
Once again, Basil selects a red and white PokeBall. Briefly you wonder why he doesn't care for any of your specialty balls, but you decide not to question it.
He holds the thing tight in both hands.
"Okay, Bas', that's another really good one! I mean, they're all stellar, obviously, but this one is fun. This Pokemon and I also go way back. All the way back to..." Your heart clenches a bit, but you push past it quickly. "The very start of my journey! A very special person gave me this Pokemon."
Is it bad that you haven't brought up Arven to Basil yet? He isn't that old yet... Not even two yet. He hasn't asked about a papa or a daddy... So? You just kinda let it ride.
"How about you throw the PokeBall this time, huh? Give it a shot. Just throw the ball, hard as you can." You mime the motion to him.
Basil nods solemnly, looking to the ball, then he takes a deep breath and chucks it with a shout!
Or.
Well, he...
He kinda tries to chuck it.
In reality, the ball falls to the ground beneath his feet. It doesn't really matter though because the reddish glow of the releasing pokemon is still able to distance itself from the pair of you as Raidon materializes upright and gives a full body shake, making a chirring sound.
Basil stands in awe of the dragon that towers over the pair of you.
"Big!" He shouts, and you laugh.
"Yup! It's a big pokemon! This is Raidon!" You pat the creature lovingly along its shoulder, encouraging it to return to all fours. It eyes Basil up and down curiously, tilting its head from side to side. The sight of your baby helps bring it back down to earth a bit, and once it's on all fours again, you kneel to Basil's level.
"Now Raidon is really cool because--"
Basil shrieks, and your heart jolts momentarily before you realize it's a cry of laughter as the pokemon presses its snout up against his chest, chittering happily at him.
Your gaze softens, watching Basil pet along the dragon's snout, just as he had with Skeledirge.
"Good job... We always wanna be nice to pokemon, yeah?" You eventually say, petting along Raidon's shoulder and back.
Basil nods but doesn't take his wide, shining eyes from the creature in front of him.
"So... One of the neat things about this Pokemon is that..."
-
Just like both of his parents, Basil falls in love with Pokemon quickly and whole-heartedly. He's just as eager to meet everyone else on the team as they are to meet him!
Basil makes sure to play nicely and pay keen attention, or as good attention as his developing brain can make out. When someone shuts their eyes, they've "gone to sleep," so they're done playing. If someone is bouncing around, they can still play! He especially likes trying to kick around the little ball you brought along with them.
The Pokemon are also all very gentle with him. Not that you doubted any of them, really. Well, maybe Tinkaton, a little bit... But even then! They seem to understand their strength and how to tone it down for play with a teensy human.
When the sun starts to set later that evening, and Basil's eyes start to droop as his hands lose their grip on the last few bites of his cut up sandwich, you decide it might just be time to head in.
You recall all the pokemon to their balls, pack up the picnic, tuck your boy into his stroller and get started on the trek back to your apartment.
-
You're not alone.
You're not alone.
You're not alone.
You repeat the phrase like a mantra.
You're not alone.
You know that.
Not in, like, a spiritual sense or whatever, or even in the literal sense. You're fully aware that you have your little boy with you nearly at all times.
But you're not alone in raising him.
There's Nemona and Rika who are consistently proving themselves and trying to outdo one another as Best Tía of All Time.
There's Clavell who is always happy to take Basil for an afternoon when you're busy on research business for the academy.
Even Larry has taken your boy once or twice. You recall once how he gave a small sort of half smile when he took the stroller from your hands and waved you off.
"It's fine." He'd said, "He makes good company at meals."
"He can barely talk?"
"Exactly."
So.
Yeah.
You're not alone in parenthood.
Except when you are.
And...you currently are.
It's late at night. Well past Basil's usual bedtime. Past any time you'd feel comfortable asking a friend for an extra set of hands.
You can't blame Basil. Not really.
This isn't his fault. He's a good, sweet boy. He isn't even two yet, and he's already so smart.
Sometimes you even forget how little he is because he's so smart and perceptive.
That's your fault.
So... Maybe you jumped the gun a bit.
Maybe it was too soon for Basil to have a pokemon of his own.
Maybe you didn't realize how tricky it was raising a pokemon in tandem with a toddler.
How was Basil to know that dog pokemon can't eat raisins?
How were you to know he'd figured out how to open up the pantry?
You'd only been in the other room for a few minutes, changing into your pajamas and brushing your teeth when Basil had slowly pushed open your bedroom door, shuffling from foot to foot.
"Mama... Buddy frowed up..."
So...here you are, after a tearful admission on your son’s part, rushing your sweet baby's maschiff to the closest Pokemon Center.
Basil is inconsolable in your lap as the taxi flies. Your attempts to calm him fall on entirely deaf ears, partly due to the fact that he's crying so loudly that even the Taxi Driver can barely hear anything. You’ll have to tip him really well.
Basil is a good, sweet boy. He really is, but the situation isn’t aided in the slightest when he flails about in his tantrum, bashing your nose with one of his tiny fists more than hard enough to draw blood. Beyond the pain and having to hold back your own tears for your boy’s sake, you also have to calm the rage, the fear, the panic building in your heart that makes you want to scream. You also have to stanch the blood haphazardly, pressing your tender face to your shoulder, while Basil bawls out his apologies to you.
Maybe if someone else were around, someone could have been watching Basil while you changed.
Maybe if someone else was around, they could have stayed home with him while you rushed off to the Pokemon Center.
Maybe if someone else was around, they could have talked you out of letting your baby boy have a pokemon of his own.
Maybe if someone else was around, you could allow yourself to panic a bit, too.
As it stands, you need to be the sole pillar of support here. No one is here to give you a hanky to wipe at your nose or dab at the unshed tears in your eyes. No one can rub your back soothingly and let you know it’s okay, help you calm your racing heart. No one is there to help quell the nauseous churning in your stomach.
It hits you then that you’d been so busy today that you hadn’t eaten dinner. Again. An empty belly certainly didn’t help the situation.
You try to take a breath. At least, a breath through your mouth.
Buddy the Maschiff (newly hatched as of a few weeks ago from an egg that had been sitting in your box for so long you'd had no idea what was even inside) will be fine, you tell yourself. They'll get him to keep throwing up or whatever needs to happen to get the rest of the raisins out of his system.
Basil will be fine. Maybe a little scared, but fine.
You will be fine. You'll keep the food up higher. No, the raisins were plenty high. Basil pushed a chair. You'll lock the pantry. No, that's crazy, you don't want to restrict food like that. You'll... You'll...
You'll calm down after maybe a few hours of sleep and a snack, maybe. Then you'll be able to think straight again. Maybe.
It's hard doing this alone.
--
"Okay, I think I'm set to go then!"
"Aw, babe, that's great! You sure you don't want me coming along?"
Arven sighs, rolling his eyes good-naturedly. "I'm fine, really. I'm just packing up the rest of my stuff from my old storage unit in Mesagoza and coming right back here."
"Coming back to me, you mean?" His companion brazenly flirts. Arven lets it slide. He opens the door of the company car and steps out to the rush of the Lumiose City airport.
"I'll see you when I get back."
"Text me, babe!" She pushes, smiling wide, but Arven is already walking away.
He doesn't... He doesn't mean to be distant to the clingy woman. He's just...a little nervous for this trip is all. Paldea was the only home he ever knew before now, and he finally got the courage to leave for this Kalosian job. He was ready to grow from beneath the shadows of his world renowned parents and League Champion friends. He was ready to find something for himself and come into his own! And he’s done that! He’s still doing that! But it came at the cost of seemingly all of his friends back in Paldea. After your argument and subsequent blocking, everyone else dropped off like venonats not terribly long afterward. It really stung, and it still stings. Arven isn’t entirely sure what to expect when he returns to his home region. Has anyone been following his success? Will anyone even be happy to see him? Should he really just lay low, pack up his stuff, and spirit himself away like he was never even there? Somehow a Galarian goodbye feels worse than not even trying to rekindle a connection with some of his old pals.
Then again, none of this is an excuse to be rude to the woman who gave him a ride. She's been nothing but nice to him the last few years, serving as his PR rep at Bon Applintit. Maybe he should be nicer? Maybe he should finally cave and take her out on that date she's been seemingly begging for... He assumes she probably has some hand in the neat little reputation he's built online for himself as this chef-influencer guy.
Not that he really thinks it totally suits him entirely, but folks seem to really like his content, especially when he pairs human and pokemon food together, showing off how amazing Mabosstiff is.
That's really what it is at the end of the day, he figures. Mabosstiff is the real star of the show.
Not that he's bad, or something! He’s put a lot of effort the last few years into unlearning some of his old, unhelpful thought patterns. It's just... People love dogs, and Mabosstiff is the best!
So he's really lucky. He's hit a pocket of internet fame, and the company is keeping him on longer than his current contract. Kalos has been kind to him so far... It seems like a good place to plant roots, so... He may as well pack up the last bits of his life from Paldea and haul it off now.
The flight to Mesagoza barely takes any time. Boarding and disembarking truthfully take longer than total time in the air, but that's fine.
Arven steps into the streets and...
He's pleasantly surprised by how nice it feels to hear his own language again.
Kalosian isn't bad. He's gotten much better at it, really, even if he wasn't great with foreign languages back in his classes with Salvatore...
Maybe he should thank him? Or apologize? No, thanking him would probably be better.
Plus, if he stops by the school, he could see Clavell and Saguaro.
He wouldn't have to walk by his old apartment next to his storage unit yet.
The last place he hung out with you.
He won't have to think about how you weirdly got angry and shut him out after he had to cancel a few video calls.
He won't have to think about how empty his old place is. How he misses all his peers in his age group. How everyone else ended up dropping off within the year after you blocked him.
He won't have to think about his parents' old belongings that he needs to either pack up and move or toss.
...Yeah, stopping by the academy to see some of his old teachers might be nice.
Plus, Mabosstiff might like to check out the old stomping grounds again.
Arven makes the turn toward the massive set of looming stairs and releases his pokemon from his ball. The dog, for his part, takes a moment to slowly swivel his head from side to side, as if not quite believing his surroundings. He looks up at his person and tilts his head, one of his ears flopping inside out.
Arven laughs and pats his head, fixing the ear in the process. "Yeah, Bud." He says with a smile. "We're ho--...back for a bit. Wanna go stop by school? I bet Saguaro will have some treats for you."
Mabosstiff boofs loudly and gives a bounce--or, as much of a bounce as a dog of his size can really give--before bounding up the stairs. The sight makes Arven laugh even louder, taking after his pokemon, but Mabosstiff is much faster. He gets to the mezzanine landing in no time flat before pausing, his nose held high in the air. Mabosstiff clearly sniffs for several seconds before catching the smell of something and taking off like a bolthund, not bothering to wait for Arven to meet him.
"Hey! Buddy!" The man shouts after his pokemon, picking up the pace, but Mabosstiff pays him no heed and is out of sight within seconds.
The rational part of Arven's mind knows that Mesagoza's Academy is a safe place for pokemon, and that Mabosstiff knows how to handle himself, but at the same time, he can't help but worry just the tiniest bit as he rushes onward and upward along the stairway to try and catch up.
The tiny seed of worry sprouts and grows when he hears Mabosstiff's growling bark and a tiny shriek of a cry not long after.
"Mabosstiff!" He shouts, finally scaling the last of the stairs, doing his best to stave off the feeling of being winded. He isn't the teenager who used to traverse the region anymore, after all. His eyes dart along the courtyard, looking for a massive black cloud along the grass.
"Mabosstiff!" He shouts again, before another screech draws his attention to one of the benches where his dog seems to be perched on top of something.
"Mabosstiff, stop that now!" He calls over, running toward the scene. As he approaches, Arven makes out a speck of yellow and brown yampering and trying to climb up Mabosstiff's back, nipping at his ear.
Upon closer inspection, it's a little maschiff, but Mabosstiff is hardly paying it any mind, his attention entirely focused on using some kid in a stroller as a lollipop. Said kid is the one yelling up a storm.
"Bud!" Arven scolds him, grabbing Mabosstiff by the scruff of his neck. "Down! Now!"
With a pathetic sound, Mabosstiff backs off, as do the sounds of the little one in the stroller, whose squeals die into giggles and fits of laughter.
Arven breathes a sigh of relief that the kid wasn't frightened of his massive dog and that the shrieks he was hearing were probably just laughing. He returns his dog to its pokeball as the maschiff whines.
By now, Arven’s got enough wit about him to look to the kid's parent.
"Hey, uh, I'm so sorry about that. I really don't know what got into my Mabo--" Arven's words die on his tongue when he sees that the kid's accompanying adult was none other than Director Clavell, giving him a look as if he's seen a ghost.
"Oh! Director! Hi!" Arven greets him, embarrassed. "Sorry, I... I actually was stopping by to catch up and say hello to you. I'm back in town for just a few days and I wanted to, uh...catch...up... but, uh... Wow," He says with an awkward smile, gesturing to the stroller without actually looking at it. "Y'know, it's funny, I spent so much time with you as a kid, while Mom and Dad were in lab, and now–"
"Yes, well, Master Arven..." Clavell interrupts him, blithely moving to the child in the stroller who is briefly blocked from view as the director fiddles a bit, no doubt wiping away Mabosstiff's drool and adjusting their hair, something Arven remembers him doing countless times to him as a little boy.
A moment later, Clavell stands back up, an icy indifference covering his face, a perfect match to the chill that settles in Arven's veins as he actually looks at the kid in the stroller. "I'd say you bear a striking resemblance to your father now. We must be going. Good day."
Clavell turns the stroller around, and Arven watches as his old teacher walks off with a toddler that looks like a carbon copy of...himself, complete with a tiny maschiff following along at their heels.
His head swims. What? Who's that kid? How did Clavell get him? Why does he look just like Arven? And what was with that comment about him looking like his dad now?
Arven numbly lifts a hand to his chin. Sure, he'd let his facial hair grow out a bit, but... What? Clavell knows how Arven feels about his dad. That...that had to be a dig at him, right? Did...did the facial hair look dumb? It couldn't look that dumb? No, what was this about? And who is this kid?
By the time Arven has recovered enough to move his stupid legs into the building that Clavell and the boy had disappeared into, bolting to the director's office, the door is locked, and he's informed that Clavell has already left.
Fuck... He... He needs an answer here. Something is very wrong.
Did his mom or dad have some other kid he didn't know about or something? And then he had, like, a sibling or half-sibling somewhere who was unloading their spawn on the director?
No, that’s outrageous.
Maybe the kid just...just happens to look just like Arven?
This is stupid to just guess about. He just needs to be able to talk to someone.
Arven hurriedly makes his way to the Home Ec room and knocks at the door where the familiar face of Mr. Saguaro greets him with a friendly smile.
"Arven! Hello, my boy! Do come in, come in! Would you like something to eat? I just made pokemon treats, and I’m sure your Mabosstiff would love one!" His voice booms as Arven is ushered inside and enveloped in a tight hug.
The sensation nearly knocks the wind out of him, not just because of Saguaro's strength and size but because...well, he truthfully wasn't expecting such a warm welcome after getting the cold shoulder from Clavell. Or, he had been hoping for a warm welcome from his father figure only to be met with what he can only describe as paternal disdain.
Arven hugs Saguaro back. "Hello, Sir..." He says softly, forcing back the lump in his throat. "I, uh... I was just in the area..."
"Oh?" Saguaro asks, disengaging and pulling up a pair of seats for them to chat at a table. "Well, I'd love an opportunity to catch up with one of my most successful students. Please, sit and tell me what brings you by."
It's tempting. It's... It's really, really tempting to sit and chat about Kalos and Bon Applintit and all the good things lately, but Arven can't get the thought of that kid out of his mind.
"Sir..." He starts. "I saw Director Clavell on my way in..."
"Yes?" Saguaro asks, prompting him to continue.
"It, uh, it looked like he was... Maybe babysitting?"
Saguaro's eyes go distant for a second and he sighs. "Ah, so you saw..."
"Yeah." Arven interrupts before his former teacher has a chance to continue. "Who was that? The kid, I mean? And, well, why was the director taking care of--"
"Arven..." Saguaro sighs and stands back up, placing a hand on his shoulder. It's a comforting gesture, warm and heavy, but when Arven meets his gaze, hoping to find some type of answer to his confusion, he's met with sadness and what almost feels like disappointment radiating from the larger man. "Arven, I don't think I should be the one to tell you anything about that little one..." He says, his tone matching that same disappointment in his eyes. "That's a conversation you'll need to have with the child's mother."
"His mother...?" Arven asks, flabbergasted, his mind racing about who that could possibly be.
Saguaro nods. "You might find her at the Pokemon League this time of day, if you're lucky. I assume you don't have her number anymore?"
"Anymore? Wait, Sir, I'm not following here... I seriously have no idea what's g--"
Then it hits him.
You.
He slept with you.
It was...well, almost three-ish years ago? So...the timing would work out for a toddler. Not that he really knows what kids look like at different ages, but...
A toddler.
His toddler.
His toddler?
Arven doesn't realize his knees buckled. All he knows is that he's sitting in a chair, presumably placed beneath him by Saguaro just in time, a mug of water in his hands, while his teacher rubs gently at his back.
"Arven? Son, are you okay?"
"Don't say 'son'..." Arven mumbles out, his hands shaking as he grips the cup with near-white knuckles. He feels bile churning in his stomach. "I... I gotta go to the League... She hasn't spoken to me since...since..." He's trying to do the math in his head, but there's a block there, and between the rush of nausea and extreme anxiety, he can't focus.
"I gotta go. Sorry. I mean, thanks." He says, standing unsteadily before rushing from the room, Saguaro's protests falling on deaf ears.
Luckily, the Pokemon League isn't terribly far from Mesagoza, and Arven can make the trip on foot fairly easily in under an hour.
The whole trip there, he's panicking internally.
Did you really have his kid? That's...that's not what he actually saw was it? Then...then who was that little boy? Whose was he?
Beyond that, why hadn't you told him? Was this why you got all bitchy and dropped off the face of the earth? Well, maybe it wasn't bitchy...maybe it was hormones? But still! You never told him! Sure, he had to cancel your video calls several times, but... But you still could have found a way to tell him! You didn't need to block him! Was this why everyone else shut him out, too?
Actually... It all kinda lined up now. You blocked him, then...some number of months later, everyone else stopped talking to him, too. Even Penny stopped sending him the occasional meme.
What the fuck. Everyone thinks he's a deadbeat dad.
He is a deadbeat dad.
Or...is he? Can he be a deadbeat dad if he didn't know? ...Maybe that makes it worse? Fuck.
Maybe you didn't want him around for any of this, and that's why you didn't tell him... You knew he'd be a shitty dad or something. After all, what kind of dad could Arven be when his own dad didn't even want him?
No.
No, that's not right.
That's no way to think about any of this.
Something...
Something else has to be at play here.
Arven has talked himself down from the precipice by the time he's made it to the top of the hill on which the League building sits.
He's just about to open the door to enter when a smartly dressed person with long, teal hair exits, arms crossed and a stern look on their face.
"Hello. How can I help you today?" They ask formally.
"Hi, yeah. My name's Arven Sada-Turo. I'm looking for, uh..." He falters for a moment before giving your full name and title. It felt strange saying the whole thing out loud again, like lead on his tongue.
The person hums at him critically, then gestures with their chin back toward the building.
"Let's talk, Arven Sada-Turo."
He breathes a sigh of relief, following them through the doors.
"Oh, thank you so much. You know, I spent the last few years in Kalos, and I just came back today, so--"
"You've been in Kalos?" The person--Rika, according to the nameplate and pronouns on her desk--says. "Kalos is pretty nice. You must've been having a great time over there." She goes on, taking a seat and folding her hands in front of her.
"I, uh..." Arven eyes her, unsure. "I was... Um, I just came back to, um... Actually, is she gonna be here soon?" He asks, confused.
"Please." Rika gestures to the chair across from her desk. "Have a seat. We can have a chat while we wait for my dear friend, yeah?" She asks, her eyes narrowing like a Luxray.
"Um... Sure..." Arven says, sitting down uneasily. "So, she'll be down? I, uh, haha... I never bothered completing the League challenge while I was in school, so..." He looks around the lobby. "I dunno where she might...um...be..ya know, in the building..."
"Yeah, don't worry about it," Rika speaks over him glibly, leaning back, crossing her ankles up on her desk. "I just wanna talk for a second. So you just decided to come back to Paldea to see my dear, sweet friend? Just a little pleasure call, or...?"
Arven splutters. "Excuse me?"
"I'm just trying to get your angle here, Sada-Turo. I don't see why you're bothering to come back after all these years. She's built a good life for herself, y'know? Super successful Champion, one of the best field researchers for our scientists. One hell of a mom. She doesn't need you or whatever pathetic excuse of an offer you might be trying to attempt here."
"Wh...What?!" Arven stammers, his heart pounding painfully in his chest when your status as a parent was confirmed. "I didn't even come back to see her! I came back to get the rest of my stuff and move permanently back to Kalos! It was only--"
"Then why are you here? Why don't you go?" Rika asks, her eyes going dark. "We don't need you. She doesn’t need you."
Arven's heart sinks. Rika was re-affirming all his worst thoughts, and as much as he feels urged to believe them, he fights it. This isn't a conversation he needs to have with some random woman at the Pokemon League. Who was she anyway? Your girlfriend? No, she called you a dear friend, but still…
Ugh, Rika’s relationship to you doesn't matter! He needs to talk to you.
"Is she coming down or not? Is she even in the building?"
"Not anymore." Rika smirks, checking her phone.
Arven audibly sighs and stands to leave. "You're wasting my time. I need to talk to her about...whatever this is that’s going on." He says, gesturing vaguely as he leaves the building.
"Oh, now you wanna talk to her? Why? Wanna try and convince yourself you're better than your own daddy because of your follower count or some tauros-shit?" Rika calls after him. "See if she gives you the time of day, Sada-Turo! Just see!"
Her words sting. Really badly, actually, but Arven tries to just let them slide off his back best he can. That woman doesn't know him. She isn't the priority right now.
You are.
He just needs to figure out some way to find and talk to you…
His phone buzzes obnoxiously in his pocket. He spares a glance at it as he hails a taxi on the off-chance that maybe you'd reach out, then turns the screen off. He doesn't have time for his PR rep right now.

Congrats on 1k, babe!! It’s what you deserve and so much more 🤍 for the requests could I get Eddie Munson with some fluff and Crave by Paramore for inspiration?
Thank you, my dear! Here’s some fluffy Eddie || #Lunas1kfollowercelebration🌙 — to submit a prompt.
-
He wanted this for so long.
He supposed, if he had to think about it, it started with your constant stops into the shop. Not by your own doing, of course. Your car had a pension for ruining your day. Flat tire on the side of the road that required a tow? An issue when your alternator decided to stop working. That ker-plunk of your exhaust hitting the ground one day after hitting a rowdy pothole. The screech of protest from your aging brakes.
You were all quiet smiles standing in the dim lightning of that vestibule. Jeans stretched over crossed thighs while you waited and read one of the crappy magazines the owner left around. Laughter, when one of the other waiting patrons asked what brought you here, and you mentioned it was your third time this month.
“Just can’t get you out of my hair, can I?” Eddie chuckled, dirty hands, baseball cap turned backwards on his head. Your head lifted suddenly, like you hadn’t expected him to speak, and he shrunk away, worried he’d offended you.
But the secret was, after that first time you’d stumbled into the auto repair center, snow slicked over the hood of your jacket and your too-big knit cap, he’d craved those run ins. Wondered when the next time he’d see you would be. He hated that your car had to break down for it to happen, but he craved it all the same.
So it shocked him when you walked over to pay for your latest service, voice bright as you said, “I’ll be out of your hair soon. I’m getting a new car this weekend. Figured it was about time I retired this one.”
His head spun, because that would mean he wouldn’t see you. Wouldn’t look up when that door bell jangled and see you standing there, brightening the often monotonous shop days. So, naturally, he really couldn’t help the words that spilled out next. The way his heart thudded and he swallowed thickly, blurting, “Grab dinner with me sometime?”
His heart pounded, ‘cause what the fuck was he thinking?
But you’d smiled, wide and pretty, eyes light. “Sure, Eddie. I’d like that.”
It had been movies and dinner that next weekend. Fingers that had at first accidentally brushed over shared popcorn, and then intentionally sought warmth of another palm. It was the smile he gave you over the top of his dinner menu—the way you’d brushed your hair behind your ear and glanced away, bashful and pretty, that first date nervousness bubbling.
He’d felt it too.
It was the promise of next weekend shared over a slow kiss at your door. The kind that made his stomach leap, ringed fingers sliding over the contours of your face. He wanted to memorize every detail, that craving to do this all over again, this night, this moment, this kiss with this girl all over again.
One date turned to two, then three, and soon it was movie nights in curled on your small couch, his hand in yours as you strolled in the park, heated kisses in the back of the van, where whispered screamed into quiet spaces, bellies full from dinner, hearts fuller from the company.
And yeah, maybe his car broke down on your way to dinner one night. And maybe it had been raining as he lifted the hood of his car and peered at you through the windshield, but you both laughed all the same, because car troubles brought you here, and now that’s where you would remain.
