Loki’s mythology is not as chaotic as you may think…

It’s even more chaotic than that!

Who is Loki?

Often referred to as the Trickster God of the Aesir, Loki is actually the son of Fárbauti a giant, or a Jötunn, and Laufey, who was said to be a goddess. Though Loki is often referred to using he/him pronouns, can change his shape and gender at will.

While many of the old stories involving Loki paint him in a negative light, the same cannot be said for Loki’s modern followers.

Loki was known to be mischievous and at times malicious, but he was also rather helpful in many stories.

At some point Loki’s name became conflated with Logi, meaning “fire”, however, Logi is a separate being and is the Nordic personification or god of fire. Many blame Richard Wagner for this mix-up.

It is also possible that Loki’s name means “knot” or “tangle”.

It has been debated whether or not the Finnish "Lukki" (the name for a spider with thing, long legs) came from the same root as "Loki" ("luka" the proto-germanic word for "lock") but this is not a very popular belief and there is very little evidence to back it up.

Though Loki is part Jötunn, he is seen as part of the Aesir.

My personal favorite story of Loki is Þrymskviða, in which Loki and Thor disguise themselves as women in order to get Thor’s hammer back.

Sleipnir, Loki’s son, is an eight-legged horse that came to be when Loki had to transform into a mare in order to drive away the great stallion, Svadilfari. While Loki was in the form of a mare, the two came together to create Sleipnir who was said to be the fastest and best horse in all of the nine realms. Odin eventually chose Sleipnir as his steed.

One of the most popular tales involving Loki gets its namesake from the god, the Lokkasenna.

Loki ends up punished by the Aesir for either killing Baldr or for the events that take place in Lokkasenna. He is bound in a cave by the intestines of one of his offspring, his son Nari is turned into a wolf, and a venomous snake is placed above his head and drips venom into his eyes. Sigyn holds a shell above his head to protect him from the venom but every so often needs to empty the shell and the venom drips into his eyes once more.

In myth, it is said that Ragnarök will begin when Loki breaks free from his bondage.

Loki has been conflated with Lugh, the Irish deity due to their similar prankster and chaotic nature as well as the slight similarity of their names.

Ship It (I SHIP IT HARD.)

What made you ship it?

Around the time the first Avengers movie came out, I was just dipping my toe into Tumblr and Twitter fandom. I found and started following a ton of RP accounts on Twitter. And since RDJr is my favorite ever since Weird Science, there was a lot of Iron Man fanart on both of my dashboards. Shippy fanart started to slip in -- and while Stony was very prominent, so was FrostIron. My love for Loki had already started to bloom (plus, I was fascinated that IRL British Ginger Dork could, with a little hair dye, become My New Favorite Villain), and seeing him constantly paired with My Favorite New Hero -- and there was A LOT of very cool art --made me go Ooh. Plus, I befriended this awesome Tony RP writer who had an awesome RP thread with a Loki, and that, plus all the fics I started to read, just plunged me, heart eyes first, into SHIPPING IT HARD. I watched the movie 10x in the theatre, started watching all the interviews with RDJr and Hiddles, and eventually, I read a college au (that I loved) and decided I could totally write them even tho I hadn't written anything in a couple years. Thus, Dark Side.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Besides the whole enemies-to-lovers thing? And besides the fact the ship was comprised of two of my favorite actors (at the time)? I mean, their whole dynamic is not so secretly my ideal relationship. The sarcastic barbs lobbied back and forth that rests comfortably atop the sexual tension the ability to keep up with each other is flamed on by. The intelligence that kind of quipping and humor requires -- and let's face it: someone is always hotter when they can stimulate your mind and your body. Add in the bonding that can happen over the shared Terrible Paternal Relationship and The Trauma That Makes Our Humor So Great and how they can heal each other, the debate between science vs. magic, and how they're much more alike than one would think. The fics that explore how discovering how much they have in common and how they learn to see each other in a different light (whether superhero and supervillain or not) are some of my faves and an element I often insert in my own fics. IDK, I just love them.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Not really? Any gripes I have are more with authors' characterizations of them. I don't go telling anybody they can't write them the way they choose, tho. I just nope out of fics that have anything I don't want to read. And then I write my own. :D

What made you ship it?

Similar to FrostIron, I discovered WinterFrost through mostly RP. But probably what made me fall head over heels for this pair was dipping my toe into RP myself. The friend whose Tony Stark I loved mentioned in convos that they wanted to start RPing a Bucky but wanted him paired with a Loki. They asked me if I wanted to try my hand at RP, so I did. This was about 6-7 months before CA:TWS was released, so there wasn't much if any, WinterFrost content yet -- and it was actually still called Lucky at the time. Anyway, Bucky was post-CATFA, and my Loki was post-Avengers (we mutually decided to start there instead of post-The Dark World). They randomly met and organically began to fall in love. The truth is, this ship is special to me bc, as we wrote Bucky and Loki falling in love, we were falling in love. So, it's all kind of woven together with my own love story. Kind of bittersweet now.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

There is a bit of a dark element to WinterFrost that I'm kind of drawn to. The RP was the only place I ever really explored that (kind of) -- although I did have an idea to turn my PWP WinterFrost into a serial killer AU. I eventually abandoned that idea. For a lot of reasons. By dark element, I mean the darkness in both characters potentially being compatible and flourishing. Bucky as the Winter Soldier was almost devoid of emotion (except when he saw Steve, in the movie at least); Loki, in contrast, was highly motivated by his emotions but kind of let himself get battered and embittered by them. At least the way I wrote my Loki. Beyond that, there is a great capability for them to bond over their trauma (again, similar to FrostIron). There is no bigger troll than Bucky (c'mon, he grew up with Steve Rogers, ffs), and Loki would relish in the chaos Bucky would cause with his commentary. I feel like there's a mutual mending they can do for each other. Loki can help Bucky battle his demons -- as a demon slayer himself -- and Bucky can show Loki a love like he's never known.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Nah. Similar to FrostIron, it's down to characterizations. I'll literally read anything about these two.

WinterIron

What made you ship it?

I was already into FrostIron and WinterFrost -- and RPing both. So it was kind of like, "I ship Tony and Loki and Bucky and Loki, why not Tony and Bucky?" I RPd that for a bit, too. I haven't read or written a lot of this ship, so I'm not sure what I like beyond it being two actors I love, two characters I love, and liking that they could both find a little bit of happy with each other. Also, it's interesting to think about the internal crisis Tony would endure for falling in love with the man responsible for his parents' deaths.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I honestly have no idea. Like I said, I haven't really dug deep into this one yet, like I have FrostIron and WinterFrost. It's definitely one of my smaller ships.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

No, but I wish people would leave WinterIron shippers alone. Way too much hate flung at this ship and the people who write it. It's annoying.

Don’t Ship It

Why don’t you ship it?

Honestly? It's because of Gwyneth Paltrow. I don't like her, as an actress, as a personality, as a hawker of vag candles -- whatever. I never liked her portrayal of Pepper. And don't come for me, y'all, bc believe me, I know how this sounds -- but I thought she looked too old to play Pepper. Yes, she was only 34, and RDJr was 43, and that's an age gap in itself (and coincidentally, Leslie Bibb was 35, which btw she does not look older than GP and...yeah). I think I felt the way they were portraying Tony Stark's womanizing ways it didn't make sense (to me!) that he'd go for someone closer to his age and stick to younger women. (Blame my brother. He's been dating girls my age and younger since high school. His first son's mother is my age. She was 4mo along when we graduated from hs. He dated a slew of girls near or around my age well into his 30s. His second son's mother was 6yrs younger than me. He's gross, I know. I tell him all the time.) Anyway, I love Tony and Pepper's dynamic in the comics (the few I've read), and when I RPd a Pepper (I did not use GP; I used my idea of a perfect Pepper: Jessica Chastain), I was told the way I wrote her was closer to comic!Pepper than MCU!Pepper, which I gathered was a good thing. People often misunderstand that my distaste for Pepper has nothing to do with the character herself. I LOVE the character. I think she's a badass, and I think she's the best working partner Tony could have -- which is why probably why I always writer her as Tony's closest confidant. But I also think they did Pepper a disservice by casting GP.

What would have made you like it?

A different actress, lol.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Like I said, I love the character of Pepper. She's a great foil to some of Tony's more grandiose ideas and she has a way of handling him without him realizing he's being handled. Maybe I'd ship it if she didn't start out as his secretary? There's something very creepy about a relationship between a boss and a secretary to me. Idk. As Besties, I love Tony and Pepper. Beyond that? No.

Writing Realistic Future Names

You writing something with aliens? Dystopian future? Doctor Who fic? 'Humans are the Weird ones' post? Need names?

Are you, like me, tired of dystopian names which are normal names written dumbly, or futuristic settings with normal names (looking at you Star Trek), or absolute nonsense? Well here's some cool ways to get futuristic names that make sense.

Celeb and Fandom Names

Names like Draco, Hermione, Sherlock, Mycroft, Enola, Benedict, Castiel, Destiel, Jensen, Danneel, Spock, Katniss, Primrose, Teyla, Elsa, Anakin, Loki, Constantine, Jinx, Rhianna, Catra, Adora, Zendaya, Halsey, Misha/Mischa, Korra, Katara, Toph, Cardi, Mabel, Ariel, Whoopi, Madonna, Oprah, Usain etc are gonna become increasingly popular, like they already are, even more so once enough time passes that people stop associating them with certain pieces of media or certain famous people.

Other Language Names

Historically, in different times different countries have a total global influence, and that will effect names. Right now, it's the USA. During the Rennasaince, it was France. We're pretty close to having Japan and other Asian cultures become the next big influence, what with all the anime everyone globally is watching/reading. Now, depending on how far in the future you're writing, add global influence from other countries. Dutch names like Marjolein and Ninthe and Brechtje, pronounced to the accent of the setting of your story. Try to go with cultures who have potential to be big: don't choose some small country somewhere that nobody has ever heard of. Go for Native American or Mexican or Russian or Japanese or Egyptian.

Use surnames for first names! A lot of names that used to be surnames are now gender neutral first names, such as Avery. Use surnames! Johnson, Harris, Smith. All of it!

Strange Shortenings

Shorten traditional names in unntraditional ways! Richard always gets shortened to Richie or (for some unfathomable reason) Dick. What about Char? Chard? Those are kick-ass names. Chris for Christian? Cancelled. It's Tian now. Cathy for Catherine? Wrong. Let's make it Rhine. Amy from Amelia? Let's screw with that, turn it into Ammy. You get it.

Pretty Words

People tend to call their children by name of something pretty, and then those names exist untill after the words have lost their meaning. Right now, most of our names are Biblical Hebrew and Latin and Old English/German. We're at the point where slowly, child names are gonna mean things in today's language again. It's already happening a little; Dawn and Hope and Autumn... but give me children called Justice and Fauna and Prime and Amethyst and Earth. Ash and Queen and Happy and Light and Feline. Give me twins called Sapphire and Sapphic, like we call our twins Catherine and Caithlynn or Tim / Timothy and Tom / Thomas now.

Spelling

Spelling is going to shift with the years, and you want your names to reflect this. This one pretty much only works for at least a hundred years into the future. Here's some guidelines of what spelling might become:

t / th = d

s / k = c

ee = i

a = e (sometimes)

y = i (sometimes)

ks = x

o = oe

h = h (add more often)

Examples: Katherine = Caderine, Timothee = Dimoedhi, Blake = Bleke, Susanna = Cucennah etc. Of course, you can do it your own way, or only use some of these guidelines if you want. Feel free to play around with it. If you chose to go for this, keep in mind that there will still be some names in old spelling, just like we still have towns called Kooperdeck and stuff like that. This technique sounds dangerously close to the "say names while your mouth is full of oreos" technique that some dystopian writers use that I hate, but because it's based on logic and what the future might actually be like, as long as you use this in moderation, it'll sound really cool. Out of these examples, Caderine and Bleke are better to use than Dimoedhi and Cucennah, because "Timothee" and "Susanna" have been pretty much lost. If that's what you're looking for though, then that's your thing, I just personally like to be able to see realistic names and eventhough those names are based on logical prediction, they sound made-up.

Gender

You need to pay attention to the percieved gender of names. You can use names that are gendered or slightly gendered right now as gender neutral names. But if you're inventing new names, do pay attention to whatever percieved gender they have in your universe. You can use Chard and Jensen for girls, Caderine and Sapphire for guys. In fact, you should definetly use names like Loki and Earth and Rhine as non-binary names.

Disclaimer: I haven't studied history, and most things I reference here as 'historically, x has happened and is therefore likely to repeat in the future' are just things I've picked up on and heard about and logically deduced, and they could be wrong. However, I consider myself very smart and I really really like history, so you should consider this as a fairly accurate depection. Just know that if someone who actually studied or researched this topic says I'm wrong then I'm probably wrong.

So there you go! How to write realistic future names. Have fun!

The Magic Colour Theory of the MCU

Magic all throughout the MCU has been shown through a multitude of different colours, ones I believe correlate to different infinity stones. Think about it.

Dr Strange and the type of magic he uses are heavily tied to the soul and self-alignment, as such the magic is orange like the soul stone. This is also why his magic is green when he uses the time stone. This brings up the question, why is Loki’s magic green?

No, Loki does not have the secret ability to shift time, yet (TVA?) but he is skilled in enchanting people, creating illusions, and a sort of spacial anomaly which allows him to store small objects like daggers. All of this can’t be tied back to one infinity stone, but rather two. Coincidentally(?), it is the only two infinity stones he had used himself; the mind stone and the space stone. Blue and yellow which combine to make green. He is not the only one to use the mind stone, however.

Wanda, the most obvious of the three. Her chaos magic said to literally shift reality to her liking is clearly derived to the reality stone, a stone just as deep red and strange as her own magic. The thing is, she also uses magic from the mind stone as seen when she manipulates peoples mind, so why isn’t her magic ever yellow like how Dr Strange’s turns green. Well, it may be that magic directly derived from the mind stone isn’t yellow, or not always at least.

Look at Vision. Well he’s not exactly a magic user he does use the mind stone for many of his abilities. At first I thought that the magic of the mind stone highly concentrated could turn red as shown through various comics that depicted Vision’s laser as red. It is still a plausible theory, but another would be that when the mind stone is influenced by another magic it will take on that colour, like how it did when it was in the sceptre. This theory however throws a wrench into Loki’s magic.

Finally Agatha, or more specifically dark magic. It makes sense really, dark magic is always depicted as an evil way to gain unimaginable power, so of course it would derive from the power stone. It’s as they say ’absolute power corrupts absolutely’. The black fingertips gained when using dark magic also fits the darkened and charred skin gained when the power stone is held directly.

Now, was this probably all explained in the comics and a giant waste of my time? Probably, but it’s been running around my head for the past few months and I needed a post to prove I wasn’t a bot. Point is, magic is derived by infinity stones.

This is also suggested in different ways, like how both magic and infinity stones are useless in the TVA and how Vision straight up says Wanda’s magic is similar to the mind stone. You could say he was just detecting the part of the mind stone she held, but then he distinctly said it was similar and not the same. He also said he only felt her which showed her only felt her magic and not the his own.

Anyways, if you actually read to this point I’m impressed. Feel free to add your own critiques and theories, just please be nice. Again, first post. It’s probably really obvious and not a great first impression but it’s 5am cut me some slack.

Hel Deity Guide

Who is Hel?

Often referred to as a “goddess of death”, Hel is actually the ruler who presides over the dead. Her domain is the underworld, also called Hel (or Helheim). She is often described in text as cruel or cold, not uncommon for a deity that deals with death. This may not represent the experience that those who work with Hel have had, please keep in mind that deities are not solely their mythology.

While modern pagans may have epithets for her, there is no historical Epithet for Hel that I have found.

Notes

The Aesir were told that Loki’s three children would cause destruction one day. To combat this, Odin threw Hel into Helheim where she crowned herself queen and made it into her realm.

Her appearance is said to be that of a woman who looks half human and half blue like a corpse.

Some think that Helheim, the underworld, came first and Hel as a goddess became a later development or personification of said place.

It’s important to note that Helheim is not a place of punishment or torture—but that doesn’t mean it’s particularly pleasant.

Hel’s most popular story is The Death of Baldr, in which she refuses to allow Baldr to leave Hel unless every last creature on earth weeps for him. Every being except one giantess (who people believe to be Loki in disguise) cried, but since the terms were not fully met, Baldr remained in Hel.

Her name means “hidden”, referencing those who are dead and invisible to the living.

Many scholars believe that the deity Hel is a creation of the Christian mythographer, Snorri Sturluson.

Since she is the daughter of Loki (a half-giant) and Angrboda (a giantess), Hel is also probably a giantess or jötunn.

freyura is underrated i think but i also only like it under certain circumstances (ie. anime frey) because. it gets weird if you take it with manga canon. but i do think it's sweet and ep 11 where mayura apologizes for enlisting his help is very cute imo <3

a lot of people don't like reiya(freya) which is understandable because they really give her zero personality except for loving loki which is partly why it leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth but if it weren't for that id love reiya/loki i think esp. with freya's episode about where she said she feels alone like. sorry im never immune to chars who deal with loneliness. unfortunately they drop it after that episode and i have words about that but thats a different post.

The first Light Night of Samhain. Today we had a day of fortune-telling))), light night - means that you are cleaned and protected from all the crap, spirits and people do not owe anything, in short, you stepped into a new cycle, so now you have the right to beg for goodies. Do you remember, yesterday I told you we were pouring candles on paper? Lina got a duck. And Marik got a boot in the shape of Italy. When Sonya saw it, she screamed: "Re-pour it now! I don't want to go to Italy! Lina said: "That duck bothers me". Today we had three rituals. Well, cut apples - you make a wish, cut an apple in half, if the seeds are intact, there are no obstacles to fulfillment. Half - to the gods, into the fire, half - under the pillow, and in the morning you eat (well, or if there is any diet or allergies, throw it into the fire too). The second ritual is to char the fruit skins on the fire and see what you get. Everybody got ducks. Ducks and boots. Boots that look like ducks, ducks that look like ducks. Ducks that didn't look like ducks, but definitely ducks. Well, of course, I got the personal-sacral answers too. And ducks. The third ritual was the usual wax fortune-telling - you drop candle wax into a basin of water. This was the most fun, because the gods would shout "it's a duck!", snatch the candle out of our hands and throw it into the water, extinguish it, and repeat in different ways "It's a duck!!!". We'd laugh and tell them we're stupid, we don't know what a duck means. it's a duck, duck, duck, God, tell them duck. No, I can't look at it…but the sausages* were delicious, they are such hearty people, let's try it again, three-four, it's a duck!!!! Us: can we have luck and richness, not duck and boots!!! Gods: Lord Jesus, Great Buddha, I even can't! It's a duck, damn it, duck!!! D.U.C.K! Then we got to see what it means. Well yes, a duck is that's what we asked for. ^__^

Tomorrow we'll be giving geises tomorrow)))))) we don't have to, but at family council we decided to give them. This is the most dangerous ritual, because it's a vow for a year not to do something, and if you break it, you'll die the next Samhain Night. That's why Samhain night is called the night of the dead.

omgomgomg! i just saw your post about the WIPs and i have to know more about 'heat of the moment'! anything you're up for sharing: your favorite line so far, your favorite moment/dynamic between characters. this sounds so cool. and it's a great song choice, let's be real :D

I haven’t worked on this fic in nearly a year, but it’s still a fun project to come up with ideas for.

So a bit more info on the fic: we’re gonna pretend Loki is alive and the ruler of Jotunheim. Someone, or something, has been raiding and killing people in the villages. Loki is forced to find help, and that person happens to be Stephen. Stephen isn’t just good at magic, he also happens to be very clever. (Almost as if he were a detective in another life 🤔 there is a very subtle Sherlock reference, ngl.) The title is a sort of foreshadow to how the antagonist is defeated. Heat is very useful in a place covered in ice, after all. I also get to indulge in Stephen being an actual doctor in this.

He had seen disturbing injuries in his time working at the ER, ranging from point blank GSWs to a drunk man falling into a bonfire. (Charred skin is one of those smells you will never forget.) Never has Stephen seen something quite like this, however. The fire casts shadows across the walls as he crouches down to get a better look at the body. The man, albeit taller and bluer than the average male, has surprisingly similar anatomy to a human. "Even my interns at the hospital would've been ashamed of a Krocher incision like that." Stephen comments, hovering his hand over the sloppy gash. "About a 20° downward slope starting just under the rib cage. I'd say about 8 or 9 inches wide. I suspect an organ might be missing, too?"

"Do you have any ideas of what could've caused a cut like that?" Loki asks, crouching down on the other side of the body.

"The stomach wasn't cut open, it was ripped open. I once had to treat someone who was mauled by a black bear. Looked a lot like this. It could've been caused by a claw, or dull instrument of some kind." Stephen explains.

Thanks for asking about it @rosewrites! It kinda gives me inspiration to continue working on it.
