so, this is nice to see. like. sometimes it just feels like i’m not accomplishing anything, right
my ao3 wordcount for 2022, as of today:
Tumblr media
that doesn’t include at least 120k of original stuff, if somewhat sleep-deprived memory serves. that doesn’t count the 20k oneshot rotting while i put off finishing the last scene, or the 60k fic that’s just getting started. it doesn’t include ideas i started and pushed aside halfway through.
i hate to risk sounding like i’m bragging but damn. it’s not a lot. it’s not anything, to most people, especially being that it’s free labor.
but that’s half a million words there, easy, and i know all of them are good. i have faith in my competence.
whatever else comes out of this year, i did that much. and i know wren from last november wouldn’t have dreamed of a 500k year, let alone a 500k year i wasn’t even trying to pull. the only person i ever have to impress is my former self, right?

Gearing Up for NaNoWriMo with Novlr
Hi everyone 👋 I’m Pamela, Writer Development and Community Lead at Novlr!
October is coming to an end, and so is the time to prepare for NaNoWriMo (a time we affectionately call Preptober).
Tumblr media
I hit my head, what is NaNoWriMo?
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual event where writers from all over the world work toward the same goal - writing 50,000 words - while offering and receiving support from other writers.
Throughout the year, NaNoWriMo also provides resources and support for writers, as well as events like Camp NaNoWrimo.
Tumblr media
Okay, and who are you?
We’re Novlr, and we’ve got a long history with NaNoWriMo. Our co-founders, Kim and Thomas, and myself are all NaNoWriMo vets, and Novlr has sponsored NaNoWriMo since 2019 because we share their aims of supporting writers and uplifting the writing community.
Novlr is a writing workspace designed to get you from the spark of an idea to a completed first draft without any distractions.  We’re completely free to use for up to five projects, and we are the first creative writing platform to be writer-owned.*
We put writers at the centre of everything we do, and we work with our community to build the tools that writers need. We care about allowing every writer to focus on what’s most important — your words. And we are all about empowering  writers to achieve their writing goals, no matter what they look like.
Tumblr media
Why use Novlr this NaNoWriMo?
With Novlr, you can fully integrate your project with NaNoWriMo without having to manually keep track of your word counts.
We keep track of all your words automatically, from words written, deleted, to total word count. Our integration sends that data directly to NaNoWriMo, keeping your project updated on the NaNoWriMo site as you write.
We’ve also put goals front and centre in your writing workspace, which will keep you on track to reach your NaNoWriMo goals, as well as let you keep up your writing practice even after NaNoWriMo has finished.
Tumblr media
Lastly, we’ve got advanced writing analytics that will help you learn all about your writing habits, like when you’re most productive, and help you get the most out of your writing time.
In addition to the platform itself, I’m also going to be writing with you all this year!
Novlr will be hosting a NaNoWriMo kickoff event on November 1st at at 23:00 - 01:00 GMT / 18:00 - 20:00 CT.
Throughout the month, I’ll also be running regular writing sprints in our Discord and sharing lots of posts with inspiration, encouragement, and resources, as well as chat through our projects.
Join me and my writing buddy, Molly, for lots of creativity 😍
Tumblr media
No matter where you write your words, NaNoWriMo is the perfect time to build a writing community. I’ve made lifelong friends through my participation, and have got so many words written. Whether you use Novlr or not, participation is the key. And our community, and the NaNo community at large, are here to support you as you reach for the lofty goal of 50,000 words in 30 days.
I can’t wait to read all the amazing things you write!
Tumblr media
*P.S. While our Standard plan is completely free, we do offer some extras for those who want the extra push. As sponsors of NaNoWriMo, we’re offering all participants this year 40% off Novlr Pro for 12 months, and winners, 60%! Just visit the offers page in your NaNoWriMo dashboard.
Novlr Pro gets you unlimited projects, unlimited version history to restore older versions of your work, a ProWritingAid integrated proofreader for when you’re ready to edit, as well as access to our advanced analytics. Create your free account at Novlr.org.

2023 Writer Year-In-Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, I’m RaisedonRadio & FortressofmyPast on AO3 and FF.net. This is an on-going tradition since 2015. Check out my past year-end posts: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015.
Tagging a few, but if you come across this, consider it an open tag! You’re welcome to tag me back, I’d love to read it!
@writercorianarose @shesailsships @talesofsorrowandofruin @azdesertwillow @goneahead @littlemissfandomworld @dreams-of-kalopsia @halleyuhm
Big change for me compared to last year—in addition to NaNoWriMo, I actually posted fanfics! I tried to add some new questions to this year’s edition, I hope they might even move out of my tiny circle.
Total Word Counts: 51,920 for 2023 NaNoWriMo 15,570 on 2022 NaNoWriMo project 19,193 for July 2023 Camp NaNoWriMo (mostly fanfics) 28,310 in published fanfics (this number is overlapping with camp nano, I wasn’t paying attention, so I’m not going to add everything together)
Total Number Of Completed Works: 10 Total Number of WIPS worked on this year: 10 or so How Many WIPs do you still have: 23
Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? I wrote way more than expected! I seriously didn’t think I would do NaNoWriMo again. And I published ten fics! That’s ten more than last year!
Did you take any writing risks this year? The NaNoWriMo project was definitely a risk for me. I basically had an idea and no outline. It was quite a challenge to my perfectionism issues—I had to basically never reread anything and just keep going, fully aware that I can better foreshadow the ideas that came up halfway through in the next rewrite.
Biggest Surprise: I wrote for NaNoWriMo again, which I was pretty sure wouldn't happen lol, and hit the word count, all through discovery writing, and having very little idea where I was going with it.
Biggest Disappointment: I dropped that above mentioned project the moment November ended! I can tell it has potential, hidden in there. I will definitely return to it.
Do you have any writing goals for the new year? I’d love to at least finish the first draft of the 2023 NaNoWriMo project, bringing it to a tentative end so I can actually reread it and go from there. And keep writing fanfic, and maybe even work on the 2022 nanowrimo project…
Fanfiction Questions Below! (if you don’t write fanfiction feel free to skip or rework the questions for your original works.)
Fandoms I’ve written in this year: I wrote fics for 7 different fandoms! For the following kdramas: Island, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Memorist, Royal Secret Agent, W: Two Worlds, May I Help You?, and a little Korean Web drama called Handmade Love.
Your most popular story of the year? That would be Besides You with 327 hits and 47 kudos. However Superhero got the most comment interaction with 4!
The story that was easiest/or most fun to write: I Think He Knows was fun to write! I do just love brooding with a heart of gold formerly immortal male leads.
Hardest story to write: Rescue Me, Superhero, Restore, and Prayers & Promises were four works that I had left for dead, and came back and found them to be basically finished and just needed proofreading. (So just in case anyone wondered how I turned out three of those in like two days: they were actually done and I was hellbent on getting them out of my WIPs list)
Your sweetest story: That would definitely be Superhero. I altered my normal narrative style to better fit the child’s character, and I was really pleased with how it turned out.
Your saddest scene: I feel like I hit a lot of angst this year, but nothing really sad?
The sexiest moment you’ve written this year? *coughs* I wrote five pieces of smut. (Half of my fanfics were smut this year?!) Umm, I’m torn between Beside You and Don’t Blame Me? But also Never Be the Same and Take On Me???
Your favorite tag: (whether you use it the most or just something witty/perfect for the story) My brother announced to me that he reads all my tags (he was trying to embarrass me about one of my smut pieces) so I did a shout out to him in the next fic. He saw it within the day, I was actually impressed.
Tumblr media
Most unintentionally telling story: (have you accidentally or purposefully exposed a detail about yourself?) Religious guilt seems to be a reoccurring tag this year. In all seriousness, not quite sure why, but yet it kinda makes sense? (its complicated lmao) And for some reason not one, but two fics ended with marriage proposals?! (I’m so single.)
Are any of your fics named after/heavily inspired by music? I’m RaisedonRadio and it would be concerning if—checks list—less than 8 of the 10 fics weren’t named after songs, haha! (I’m actually just really bad at naming fics…)
Good To You and Besides You are both songs by the band Marianas Trench, and are heavily inspired by the songs. Rescue Me is by OneRepublic, one of those more vibes than lyrics inspired. I Think He Knows by Taylor Swift was definitely on repeat for that fic, as well as Don't Blame Me. (Poems), Prayers, and Promises was more a steal the name of the song by John Denver, for some reason I think Cold by Corbyn was on repeat when writing that one. Take On Me was named more for the similarities between the MV and the series! Never Be The Same was for the vibes of the song by Camila Cabello but not really the lyrics.
What’s your own favorite story of the year? Maybe it’s cheating but I’m not sure if I can really choose? I know it’s not a common writer sentiment but I really do like them all for different reasons.
Like I churned out Good To You and Besides You within ten days of each other in July, after not writing any fanfic basically for a year and a half.
And then I pulled Rescue Me out of the dead drafts pile and made myself work on more description.
I Think He Knows was my first foray into a brand new fandom.
Don’t Blame Me is one of my rare canon divergence fics.
Restore was another dead draft that I found to be mostly complete, and decide to release into the world even if I knew there was so much more I could have done with it.
Prayers and Promises was not only another new fandom, but for some reason, I decided to write for a side character. It’s still sitting on just 1 hit and that makes it all the better that I really wrote it for myself.
Superhero was out of my comfort zone of writing for a kid’s perspective and I was so happy with how it turned out.
Take On Me was a draft sitting at less than 1k words and I challenged myself to finish it before the new year, and got it done in two days.
And then, to finish it all off with the intense desire to have ten fics under the belt for 2023, I wrote Never Be The Same in less than two days for the last drama I had watched, and the speed that the last two fics were actually finished was a huge change for me.
Fanfiction risks you took this year? I wrote fanfic for not one, but two fandoms that I had to create the first tags for on AO3! Also, as I started to slip into just writing for kdramas this year, I’ve basically become my own proofreader and editor at this point. Any mistakes are my own, lol.
My favorite part of fandom this year: That would be getting two kudos and a comment on I Think He Knows, one of the fics that is the first in its fandom tag. To actually connect with more fans of such a tiny project was so cool!
Thanks for reading and here’s to next year!

It’s going to be November before we know it and you know what THAT means, right?
It’s NaNoWriMo time! 🥳🎉
Where I will be writing the scintillating novel of a fangirl who’s trying desperately to finish all of these darn works-in-progress. Can she do it? Will she find love along the way? Probably only the fictional kind but that’s still TOTALLY VALID. Stay tuned for the NaNo novel that will have you on your feet, cheering for the plucky protagonist to make her word count and to finally, at long last, give her blorbos the happy ending* they deserve!
*And sometimes they even get a *cough cough happy ending cough cough* because there are a couple of smut fics in there, lol.
Tumblr media
So, prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime with...
Tumblr media
...coming soon* to a Tumblr blog/AO3 account near you!
*No pun intended after that whole, you know, smut fic mention. Ahem.
Tumblr media
Anybody out there planning to do this next NaNo? 😎👍 This will be my 15th NaNo proper (I’ve done every November NaNo since 2008) and my 36th (!!!) NaNo event counting the Camp NaNos along the way (the twice yearly Camps started in 2011, I missed the very first one, one in 2018 and 2019).
Wish me luck and best of luck to anybody out there who’s going to be NaNo-ing right along side of me and mah blorbos!

Ari, hello and happy STS! How has Fey Touched been going? Also if you're feeling it, can you tell me anything about the kavians from the series?
Hello darling! and happy STS to you too! (Although I had an early night last night, so this is now technically Monday, we're just going to ignore that fact...)
Fey Touched is going well! I don't want to jinx it :D I started the month with about 19k, and my target for camp nano was 75k.
As of writing this, I've got 71k for July, so I've got another 4k today to hit my goal. Fingers crossed.
My other challenge was to complete the first draft of Changeling for Camp Nano, and while I won't quite make that, as the story has expanded slightly from them 95k total I had outlined, I should only be about 12-15k words short, so I'm giving myself the first week of August too.
As for the Kavians, I'd be delighted to tell you about my little monstrosities!
[I've done a Read More, because LONG post, but I've had trouble with Tumblr not including a Read More on asks, so if this blocks up the Dashboard, I apologise in advance! <3]
When I began outlining Fey Touched it didn't, originally, have fey at all. I wanted three different types of vampires. Traditional vampires, psychic vampires, and some twisted, nosferatu, type vampire.
But the longer I world built, the less I liked that. The "psychic" vampires were turned into the Fey, although they still retain psychic abilities, such as telekinesis, telepathy, and similar powers.
The traditional-style vampires stayed, with some tweaks. Sunlight doesn't hurt them, so much as they've very light sensitive, but they keep the more traditional speed, and strength, and enhances senses associated with vampires.
That still left me with a blank space where my monstrosities needed to sit. The evil ones. I still didn't know what I really wanted to do with these creatures, until I watched a 2019 film called "Dark Waters", with Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway.
This is a little bit of a tangent, so bear with me. The film is based on true events, which are some of my favourite films to watch. It dramatizes the story of a lawyer called Robert Bilott, when he took on a case against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont after it was discovered that they had contaminated a town with unregulated chemicals.
The story is a little terrifying in that is is based on true events, and despite Bilott's win against the company, the chemical that's contaminated the town is still used today in the manufacture of Teflon, the non-stick coating for cooking utensils, such as frying pans etc.
The interesting/horrifying thing about this particular chemical, is that it's known as a "Forever" chemical. It doesn't break down in the environment, and while DuPont argued that the amount shed from Teflon was negligible, scientific tests proved that it was linked to dozens of diseases, and some very nasty cancers.
The film is VERY worth a watch, but the part that caught my attention was "Forever Chemicals", and my little writer brain began spinning.
If humans are ingesting, and being infected my these forever chemicals, that are floating around out bodies, and our blood, from the moment we take them in to the moment of our deaths, deaths somtimes caused by these very same chemicals...
What would those chemicals do to vampires who drank our blood?
We have very strict food regulations on animals for human consumption, and what they are allowed to eat. What would happen to vampires, if human blood became toxic to them?
And very slowly, very quietly, and slightly insidiously, my Kavians were created.
Kavians emerged within the world of Fey Touched somewhere around the early 1700's. The industrial revolution, according to my brief google research, happened around the early 1700's, so I figured that's when humans began inhaling huge amounts of toxic fumes, and then progressed onto ingesting lab made chemicals later.
At the time, Fey and Vampires both lived within the mortal realm.
At first, it was isolated incidents of Vampires going mad, and attacking anyone around them, but then Fey began to go missing, and turned up dead, drained of their blood.
In appearance, Kavians are similar to vampires, but they look sick. Like they've been lost at sea for months, sick. Their skin is waxy-looking, and shrunken, leaving them looking bony. Their eyes are bloodshot, but their movements are fluid and smooth. The tips of their fingers become deformed, boney and clawlike, but because they are gorging on human and fey blood, their abilities are overfuelled.
They're faster, stronger, and their senses are sharper than the average vampire. If you've seen the Fast and Furious films, it's like punching Nitrous Oxide into a racing car's engine, but they're also insane.
There's no logic behind their eyes, and no way to get them to focus. They run on pure, predator, instinct, and lose the capacity for forming speech. They're mindless beasts, of the worst kind, and chaos ensued as more and more vampires began to change.
The council of vampires, what was left of it, didn't have any answers.
All the while, Fey numbers were being decimated. Once a vampire became a Kavian, they would hunt and kill anything, almost mindlessly, earning themselves the nickname "Rabids", but the moment they scented the blood of a Fey, they made a beeline for them, and tore them to pieces. Almost drenching themselves in the silvery blood, like cats rolling in catnip.
Not every vampire who drank human blood was affected immediately. For some, it took weeks or months before their minds snapped, for some it was the first drink of human blood. It was only a small population of vampires who eventually figured out that they were still sane because they'd chosen to drink exclusively animal blood, and took this revelation to what tattered shreds remained of the vampire council.
The vampires, by this point, were desperate. The Fey had fled the mortal realm, for a bubble realm they had created out of sheer desperation, and the vampires were facing the growing number of kavians alone, so they issues a decree that the drinking of human blood was forbidden.
Almost as soon as the law went into effect, they stopped losing huge swathes of their numbers to turning, but they also discovered that human blood had, unnoticed by them, become addictive.
As the weeks turned into months, the vampire population lost a few more vampires who couldn't resist the addictive qualities of human blood, but their biggest fight was now the huge numbers of Kavians wandering the world and killing humans indiscriminently.
The vampires took refuge inside official buildings and structures that had been warded by the Fey, before they left for their own realm of Arbaon, and once the remaining vampires felt they had recouped and slightly recovered, they began training Kavians Hunters, whose sole purpose was to hunt and kill the kavians now infecting the world.
In part, to defend themselves and protect themselves from discovery by humans, but also in the hopes that, one day, the Fey would return to the mortal realm.
Negotiations with the Fey for reintegration into the Mortal Realm have only been ongoing for around twenty-five years at the time of Fey Touched, and it is Fey Court Law that all Fey who chose to leave Arbaon and travel to the mortal realm accept the risk that they may not return.
Hence my novel's tagline;
Fey go missing in the mortal realm. Everyone knows that.

The Ruby Falls - NaNoWriMo 2022 Debrief
Tumblr media
What was I aiming for?
To finish the first draft of this story.
So how did I do?
I did it! I finished the first draft of The Ruby Falls on day 21, which coincidentally was the same day I "won" Nano. I even had some time to do a bit of rewriting... However I may have to revisit that because I'm not sure of it's quality.
Stats!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Total writing time (h): 53:38:30 Total writing time (D): 2.24 Average writing time per day (h): 01:46:47 Wordiest day: 2nd, 9520 w/c Words per hour (avg): 1,042 Average Session Duration: 00:19:38 Final word count for NaNoWriMo: 53,473 Current word count for the Document: 181,884
How does this compare to previous years?
About average I think. It wasn't terrible, and it wasn't great. The words came in a consistent trickle, and I felt okay most of the month with this.
I only started recording timed stats for 2019, so I don't have enough data to say for sure, but I think 1,042w/h is a little lower than my mean. I know getting ill and then the subsequent exhaustion that followed was not great for my words/hour rate, and in the latter part of the month I rarely went over 700w/h.
I'm not terribly upset about this years performance - it was more important to me that I finish the story than I beat my 4-day record. So while this year was mediocre, I'm okay with that.
What’s Next?
Rewrite and editing (my detested); then beta-read (my never-done-before); final edit pass and posted.
Last year I rather naively said that I would have The Ruby Falls posted by the end of Oct this year, because I was assuming I'd do Camp Nano and finish it then. I'm now considering if the same timeframe would be enough for the rewrite etc in 2023. IDK, we'll see.
At this point I'm just "We'll get there when we get there" 😆

Critical Role Word Crawl
A word count crawl from 2018? 2019? salvaged from the old nano forums and/or my own documents. Written as CR2 was airing, written as a means to intersperse watching/listening to CR with breaks to boost word count in november.
Critical Role has revitalized my creative spirit. That being said, I'm struggling to stay focused on my word count instead of the show. In my down time, I should be catching up on my word count, but all I want to do is watch those nerdy-ass voice actors play pretend for several hours.
This should be a spoiler-free crawl, based on episode structure rather than plot or character content. The crawl may read a little more like a drinking game than a chronological list, but it'll definitely build your word count. This crawl will work for either the livestreams or VODs of both campaigns. Crawl while watching an episode, or take notes and complete the crawl afterward.
Is it 7PM Pacific Time on a Thursday? Or are you settled in with a podcast or about to hit play on youtube? However you're watching, let's dive right into *Matt Mercer voice* the next episode of Critical Role!
Announcements: This is when our voice actors warm up their voices and get comfortable with their cameras. Let's warm up with them. Roll a d20 (or use an online dice roller) and multiply it by 10 – write that many words. • If you rolled a 1: write 500 words • If you rolled a 20: write at your own pace for 10 minutes (the average time of the opening announcements)
Intro: If you're anything like me, you could probably recreate the intro videos from memory down to Grog's axe and the snacks Ashley brings. If you're a new critter, don't worry – you'll see the intro at least 100 more times. Let's take advantage of this repetitive footage and sprint for the length of the intro. • 1:31 for campaign one • 1:44 for campaign two • round to 2 minutes if you're not watching along
Ability Checks: So much depends on a single die roll. A number of the coolest moments are executed with simple ability checks. Pick a character to follow. If you're feeling winded, try following an NPC like Kima or Avantika if they're in the episode. If you're feeling brazen, maybe try taking on more than one character. Note each time Matt tells them to make a check. • If the character succeeds the check, sprint for 5 minutes. • If they fail, double the word count from their last success (if they haven't yet succeeded, write 100 words) • If they roll a natural 20, take a break! • If they roll a natural 1, write 500 words (be wary of whom you follow; certain players sometimes have rotten luck.) • If Matt doesn't specify the roll as a success or failure and narrates middling results, roll your own d20. If you roll a 1 or 20, follow the steps above. Consider 10 or less a failure and more than 10 a success and follow the steps above.
Break: The break may fall before the major chunk of action or after, but it always serves as a chance for the players to calm down, collect themselves, strategize, and prepare for the next half of the chapter. Let's take a little breather of our own. • If the break begins with the DNDBeyond theme or Yev from BackBlaze, write 100 words. If not, skip this. • Write at your own pace for 15 minutes (the average break length).
Combat: Aaand we're back! Combat can be quick and action-packed or stretched-out and strategic. Is this a big boss fight or some random bandits? Use your judgement to determine whether it's a major or minor conflict. When they roll initiative, roll a d20. • Minor Combat (caught by guards, ambushed while camping, etc): multiply your d20 roll by the number of enemies the party is fighting, then multiply by 10 more. Write that many words. If Matt doesn't specify how many enemies there are (as in a hoard of undead or pack of wild animals), double your d20 roll before multiplying by 10. • Major Combat (involving someone's backstory, challenging the guard of a vestige, fighting a mythic creature, etc): write to the nearest half-thousand (i.e. 500 or 1k)
Death Saves: Things can get a little tense and sometimes take a turn for the worse. if the character you're following for ability checks falls unconscious and starts rolling death saves, try for a Fifty-Headed Hydra to help save them.
Conclusion: Whether they've stopped just after battle or right after a big reveal, we're still itching to see what happens next. Let's do a final stretch to quench the adventuring thirst until the next episode. • If the episode ends on a cliffhanger, write to the nearest thousand. • If the episode stops naturally, with the party making basic plans for what's to come, write to the nearest half-thousand.
Congrats! You've conquered the crawl, just as the party conquered their quest!
This is my first crawl and I haven't tested it yet, so feel free to offer suggestions or feedback. I'd love to hear what I could fix or how it's helped you bump your word counts.

15 November 2023 Metrics
Previous Word Count: 61,734 New Words: 621 Total words for the first draft: 62,355 NaNo 2023 Cumulative Word Count: 15,139 What I Accomplished in the Narrative Today: Skipped a scene with Peg that would be nothing but active introspection on her part since I’m kind of introspected out of by today and started David, Raven, and Ferris conference scene instead. Fave line: “We only have an hour before he has to go and we need to know what the hell happened last night, so get your bony ass out of my bed already!” What Else I Accomplished Today: Started off with a bit of introspection this morning in the lastEUfans Slack. I had made an observation last night that has been lingering in my mind that I was doing good reaching my daily word count goal of 600, but less well hitting the 1667 NaNo daily word goal and went to bed. Which got me honest push back that the NaNo’s word goal “is intense by design. I’m not sure how people do it while still doing life at all.” (I honestly think they dump the life aspects on partners or other family members or roommates or they are much better at the word vomit than I am.) That push back triggered some unpacking for me, which is going here so I will do math in December to smack my expectations with evidence.
I’ve had 600 words as a daily goal for years because I’m equally confident that I can write that in an hour and if I don’t, it’s not because of other things getting in the way, the only reason that I can fail at such an easy attainable goal that only takes an hour is because I am lazy and undisciplined, and will never be a published author because I am lazy and undisciplined.
This is not new territory. The writing blog I started back in 2004 is titled Discipline Under Fire, because OBVIOUSLY my willpower and dedication and discipline to stick to my desires was sorely lacking and needed a bit of public accountability.
I like to think I have mellowed out on myself in the nearly twenty years since that. Reading Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price Ph.D. helped but I think I may have to have it handy for a reread in December when I confront myself with math evidence with all the word count tracking spreadsheets I keep. Because I honestly typed: “Most days I can move through (meaning writing and being happy with the words I achieved) without waking up that brain weasel (having my jerkbrain scream abuse at myself because I’m a failure that so clearly deserve abuse);” the utter honesty at 4:30 a.m. when I should be getting dressed. The brain weasel is sleeping. It is not dead, it hasn’t moved out, it’s just having a nap to get ready to tear into me again.
Back on why I need math evidence topic. The weasel is sleeping but my unrealistic expectation that I can obviously write 600 words in an hour is getting the equivalent of a finger flick to the forehead because I am putting in a rough average of at least two hours a day to just Strix: Forget the Sun and its metrics for NaNo but not getting much higher than 600 words a day. What I can actually write in an hour and plans to strengthen that muscle has to wait until December when I have time to pull out spreadsheets and crunch.
But I honestly have more unpacking to do on this whole thing because I have buried that it was a thing. At this point of my day, it’s becoming a procrastination tactic to avoid the fiction writing. Don’t worry, these words get counted toward my NaNo goals too. I should’ve made a category for that but forgot to back on November 1st, but they go on the spreadsheet and get counted under the Cumulative NaNo total.
Where I am leaving this whole messy thing right now: this is Day 15 and I haven’t tossed Strix: Forget the Sun aside as unwritable for another year has made this NaNo a success. I have already made more words this year than I made in NaNo 2019 (3780 words) or in Camp NaNo 2021 (13,317 words). What I'm looking forward to: I have a massage tomorrow. And then my weekend plus a vacation with Thanksgiving. What I'm not looking forward to: Travel with my parents to see my sister for Thanksgiving. Very, very unsure how it’s going to go.

Hi there! Its Week 1 of the Sunday Writeblr Ask-A-Thon! I'm Athena, my question for you is: What are you currently writing about/ thinking about in regards to writing?
HI ATHENA!!!!!!! ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM YOU THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR WRITEBLR ASK ANGEL!!!!!!!!!!
I am still chipping away at rewriting the first novel in my series (as I first wrote it in 2019 and it was not it), it’s slowly getting there! Camp NaNo really helps~
From here I suppose I will have to at least rewrite the first half of Book 2 (I think I am happier with the second half but. We will see I guess), and because Book 3 has been stumping me for like. Ever. I might consider it for my NaNo project this year!

It’s ironic that I am writing this in the middle of the night as Taylor Swift has referred to this a lot on her songs- her greatest works coming to her in the middle of the night. I can see why as my mind too likes to run wild as I am going to bed- must be the fact that you are able to only focus on your thoughts as you are closing your eyes and drifting off to sleep. As I was falling asleep tonight I was thinking about the various people and things that have either had an impact on me or been a constant through my life and I realized music was one of them- specifically Taylor Swift’s music. Whether it has been in times of stress or joy, I have consistently gravitated towards Taylor Swift and her music in those times to celebrate or be heard. Now I have been listening to Taylor Swift ever since I first heard Teardrops on My Guitar on Radio Disney in 2006. She has been with me through the ups and downs in my life- from camp sing-alongs in 2007 in the big blue bus of Our Song to one of my best friends I met in college, Taylor Swift and her music have been a constant rock and foundation for me.
Fearless is what brought my siblings together and we bonded over Love Story and You Belong With Me listening to them in the mornings before we went to school in the mornings. The nostalgia I feel and memories I have attached to this record is un-matched- I played computer games while listening to this album on my iPod nano or running on the treadmill to these songs while they played through the speaker I connected my iPod nano to. Speak Now was the era where I had my first big move and I was able to create many fond memories belting out Story of Us and Long Live with my sisters around our new house. I remember hearing Taylor Swift perform All Too Well at the Grammys in 2013 and realizing for what felt like the first time how much power music has and the stories it is able to tell. When I lost my mom the first week of high school and was going through high school alone, 1989 was there to help me dance through those long night of homework and tears. I felt so alone sitting in my dorm at my new boarding school and so lost without my support system (my mom)- then someone turned on Shake it Off and then I had a connection with my first roommates who I am still friends with to this day. My junior year of high school when everyone was telling off Taylor Swift with all the rumors I was rather shaken up by them because I was scared that I would not have Taylor Swift and her music anymore. When reputation came out I was sooooo relieved and excited because I had been so anxious about not getting new music from Taylor Swift ever again, but we did and she absolutely KILLED IT.
Then came college- I was excited about college and all the new experiences I would have. I randomly sat down with a girl in the dining hall one day at breakfast and quickly became friends with her. We both quickly shared our love of Taylor Swift with each other and ended up becoming best friends and she became my big in the house I was moving into. The summer going into my sophomore year (2019) I went on my abroad to the Lake District and had a blast. That summer I was treated to new Taylor with three singles leading up to her new album- Me!, You Need to Calm Down, and The Archer. I was blasting these songs any chance I could get that summer- in the car, on my daily walks or bike rides to work, wherever I could. The following semester when Lover and Christmas Tree Farm came out, my big and I celebrated and listens together and fan-girled over all of it. This was also one of my worst semester of college by far so my dad decided it would be a good idea for me to stay back a semester at home and figure everything out- I was in a really dark place trying to figure out life goals, success in college, rocky family dynamics (not to mention the fact that COVID-19 came on super strong during this time)- yet Taylor Swift was there the whole time keeping together through tough nights arguing with my dad and step-mom over setting goals for myself and long hours questioning my self worth and life decisions (you know, the easy stuff). All that work payed off because I made it through and had an amazing summer as a camp counselor and finished my semester with one of my best GPAs by far. The surprise releases of folklore and evermore felt almost like gifts or rewards for me because they came when I was at the end of two very challenging bits of my life at that point- a very tricky cabin dynamic I had to work through and the end of my college semester. And now with the re-record era, I am going back and having all these old and new emotions towards these same wonderful songs I grew up listening to. Unfortunately this era for me was met with both joy and sadness as around the time of the Fearless (TV) release my big past away. I remember that night just walking around campus listening to evermore and writing about her. The next day we had a tennis tournament away so that drive I remember listening to The Other Side of the Door as the outro to that song was the only thing that was keeping me from balling my eyes out on that bus.
I have never been good with expressing emotions- Taylor’s music has always been a way for me to listen and depict how I am feeling at certain moments. Whether I am feeling sad, confused, happy, angry, or simply just cannot sleep, I can usually find a Taylor Swift song that I can relate to in that moment. I have cried to Taylor Swift songs (both tears of joy and sadness) and screamed Taylor Swift songs at the top of my lungs. I have found comfort in Taylor Swift and her music and I think there is something magical to be said about that sort of connection with someone. I have never met Taylor Swift yet there is this beautiful bond she creates with all her fans through her music which is honestly awe-inspiring. Having grown up with her, she has shifted and affected the way I view the world and experience it- yet she has stated we (her fans) do the same thing for her on a daily basis. I do not know what I would be doing or where I would be without Taylor Swift, but luckily I do not need to think about that because. Thank you to all who have stayed and read this far- I appreciate it a lot and hope you were able to find or get something through this thought explosion. I really appreciate it a lot. I just have been needing to get this off my chest for a while and share just what Taylor Swift means to me so thank you all for letting me share this. And if for some miraculous reason Taylor Swift or her team is reading this- hi and again thank you for all that you have done for me.
