Getaway - Bucky Barnes x Reader

Summary: After Civil War, you go to Wakanda to stay low. But you aren’t the only one of Team Cap there, Bucky is awake. You have no intentions of leaving, until another battle arises.

Once the Avengers had been a family, and it still was in a way, but it was broken. It seemed unknown if the lot of you would ever band back together. Perhaps the only thing that would bring the old heroes back together would be the end of the world, only time would tell.

There had been a war, and you had been on one of two sides. It wasn’t exactly what sprung to mind as a war, but it was a battle with two very different and separate opinions.

Team Iron Man consisted of Tony Stark himself, his counterpart Rhodey, Vision, Natasha, the prince now king of Wakanda and some kid the billionaire had found. You had not been on that team, instead you stood against them with the captain.

The accords was not a thing you had even considered signing. It would be like signing your life away, and if you wanted that you would have joined SHIELD. And you also found it unfair that they had wanted to keep Barnes locked up. He was an innocent man!

You had not known Bucky, although you had once had a run in with him. It wasn’t really him though, it was the Winter Soldier. You fought him with Steve and Natasha, but to this day you held no grudges against the man.

The government had been searching for the lot of you who had crossed them. Twice a month you would locate somewhere else, always staying on your feet to ensure that you would not be found or put in a cell again.

However you had found somewhere safe, as it would seem. In the past you had trained at Wakanda, and after the Civil War, T’Challa had offered you residence. The two of you were old friends, but at that time you had declined the king’s invitation.

But he asked again, recently. It would be rude to refuse, and you were becoming tired of the roads you were constantly interchanging. So you accepted, and here you were in the secret civilisation.

“I can’t thank you enough for this.” You said, embracing the king. You’d never been more grateful for him. He had given you the chance of a proper retirement.

You had been shown to your hut out in the fields and you were pleased with it. It was far from the luxury you were used to, however it didn’t make it any less homely.

As you roamed, you heard the children speaking of a ‘White Wolf’. Assuming it was an alias, you walked over to Shuri who had been playing with the youths. “Who is he?” You asked.

“He’s over there. Find out for yourself.” Shuri always had answers, but when you were younger, back when she was a child and the avengers had began, she liked to keep you on your toes. You were lucky to have visited so often back in those days.

The back of a white man faced you, he was hiding one of his arms, either that or he was missing it. He had brown hair that was an inch off from his shoulders and he wore the clothing of locals.

“I’ll take it that your the White Wolf.” It wasn’t a question, T’Challa’s sister had already informed you. And then he turned, and your eyes widened. “Barnes?”

“You’re Steve’s friend.” He stated, a small smile trying to display itself on his face. “You defended me against the rest of your team.” That had only been about four months ago, but you were surprised that he had even recognised you.

“I’m (Y/N).” He nodded in reply.

“I know, I remember.” There seemed to be an apology in his ocean eyes. He did have spiritual eyes. “I also remember trying to kill you.”

“That wasn’t you, we can move past that.” And you certainly did.

….

A bad dream had awoken you, so you crept out of your hut and glanced at the sky as you walked. Wakanda was a beautiful place, and you wondered how you were so compliant to stay in New York all those years. And then you reached your destination.

As you entered, you saw Bucky was awake, leaning against one of the walls of his hut. “Nightmare?” He asked you. Nodding, you shuffled more inside, getting closer to him.

“Do you want to talk about it?” His offer seemed heartfelt, he extended his arm, which you leant into.

“Before I was an Avenger, I did some terrible things... worse than you could even imagine.” You wondered why Fury had even recruited you. “I was a monster, and sometimes I still feel like one.”

“You’re not a monster, you were just consumed by darkness. I know how that feels.” His fingers reached up, running through the strands of your hair.

“HYDRA really screwed us both over.” Neither of you liked to think about how your lives would have been if they hadn’t been infiltrated by that cruel organisation. Instead, you saw the light of your situations.

“Without them we would have never met.” He would have been a soldier, stuck in your past. You didn’t want him there, you wanted him in your future.

“And that would have been a tragedy.” You leant in, brushing his hair from his face, chastely kissing his lips.

“Do you think you can get to sleep now?” He asked.

“I might need one more kiss.”

….

It was good to see the others again, but you didn’t want to fight again. It had really taken a toll on you, and these past couple of years of peace made you realise that was a life you wanted to get away from. Nevertheless, you were suited up, prepared for one last stand.

“This is where you got to?” Steve asked you as you walked over to the group that had just arrived.

“It was better than looking behind me.” You replied, hugging him as Bucky just had. “And I had company, so it wasn’t that bad.” Glancing at Bucky, you smiled at the man. The exchange didn’t go unnoticed.

“I see...” Steve speculated.

Sam walked up behind him. “Bird brain.” You greeted him.

“Has she been hanging out with him?” He asked Steve from the first words you said to him. Steve nodded.

“More than hanging out.” You winked, causing Bucky to flush red. It was time to fight, but you didn’t realise how much you would lose beforehand.
