hello!! i just recently discovered your writing and i am really, really enjoying reading through it! ❤️ i have oodles of questions, but mostly i'm curious about: do you have unpublished/unwritten stories that you've been dying to talk/vent about? and what kinds of media do you take the most inspiration from?
Oooh I have so many things I wanna talk about!!
Firstly, I've been leaving tags and I have an excerpt that I've shared for my latest project Blood and Bourbon (working title) about the relationship between our MC Elliot who's a vampire, and his love interest Mathias, an immortal. Originally it was meant to be a oneshot, but 6k words turned into 10k, and then turned into almost 14k, and that's when I had a talk with my brain like, "Okay!! New project, you win!" Except now, when I try to dig for a plot within the chopped up remains of this oneshot, I look to my characters and they just. Shrug. I have the threads of a conflict in the works, but that's about it? The oneshot had a very specific, very contained, A-to-B storyline that was character specific, so now, trying to stretch out towards external motivations has been. Work. I don't have any plans to post it soon, maybe early 2024? I want to write a good buffer for once so we don't go another *checks notes* ugh, six months without a serial update. I also made a promise that I won't start any new serials without finishing at least one current one, so I'm going to finish up Into the Woods before anything else.
Next WIP has been in the background for nearly six months now, and it's the DND-based romantasy with mine and my roommate's characters. My temp title is Of Course, Darling but I'm not sold on it. It doesn't roll off the tongue. This is one I've been chipping away at whenever I have the free time, and...it's a beast. I love worldbuilding, I really do, but starting from the ground up (to avoid copyright issues with WotC as I plan to sell this) is very time-consuming and energy-draining, but I'm so excited for it. This is also an m/m novel between Nyx, a shapeshifter with a bounty on his head and a dead sister to avenge, and Kaivus, a tiefling* who joins Nyx to help, but his services have never come free, and he's strangely without his magic. It's an annoyance-to-lovers with a dash of romantic history, magic lessons, and found family as they pick up more adventurers their journey. I really like this one, I'm so excited to have this one going because it hits all the romantasy buttons that I personally haven't found in mldern novels.
*in name only, I've been calling them Fiends, but that still feels too close? I don't want to just call them demons
As far as inspiration, I adore the way tumblr user/not-poignant characterizes and slow burns and pretty much everything skfjsj. Their smut and BDSM is top tier as well. Heavy trigger warning for their content, though, it gets intense!
My next biggest inspiration is probably movies in general, horror in specific. I love the stories that can be told across the board and I love the different ways they can be told, even by the same person! Horror, for me, is a big mash of every movie that could be considered such. I love Blumhouse and A24 alike, I find joy both in the splattergore of the Saw series (it's a personal favorite tbh) and the slow psychological burn of Midsommar. But I love the different ways the genre as a whole can address the same issue in different ways. I like the catharsis that comes with a good, well thought out story.
I also used to watch a lot of youtube channels like Jenny Nicholson, Lidndsay Ellis, Folding Ideas, Nerdwriter1, LftS, basically any kind of academic-leaning analysis of media, particularly visual media and movies in specific. I used to consume how different movies did things effectively/not so much, and how to make it better, I even wanted to write my own story boards for an animatic at one point! I think a lot of that taught me to analyze media a little more critically and also in how I structure stories.
There's probably dozens more little things I'm missing, books I've read I want to emulate, other writers that haven't popped up in my mind, there's probably hundreds.
I'm so glad you're liking everything, though! Your comments make me smile every time I look at them :D

Review of: “Oppenheimer”
Tumblr media
Mild Spoilers, if any…
Oppenheimer (2023) Writers: Christopher Nolan, Kai Bird, Martin Sherwin Directed by: Christopher Nolan Stars: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, etc… IMDB Rating: 8.5/10 Stars Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 91% Runtime: 3 hours
I will try to keep this short when compared to the three hour runtime of this film.
Robert Oppenheimer's claim to fame is being the brains behind the atomic bomb, the game-changer of World War II. The Manhattan Project's scientific director, overseeing the birth of the first nuclear weapons, dropped like fiery gifts on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Post-war, Oppenheimer does a little pivot. Suddenly, he's all about international control of nuclear power and giving the cold shoulder to the development of the hydrogen bomb. The Cold War and McCarthy era were not very impressed. Accusations of communist sympathies started flying around, and in 1954, he got his security clearance revoked. Political drama aside, Oppenheimer managed to keep his scientific street credit. He kept contributing to theoretical physics and education until his death on February 18, 1967. Legacy-wise, it's a mixed bag. Scientific genius? Check. Moral and ethical debates about nukes? Double-check. Oppenheimer, the man who played with atoms and left us all questioning the consequences. Nice one, Oppie. Nice one. For he is the harbinger of destructive energies, becoming Death, the destroyer of worlds.
The Film “Oppenheimer” is both powerful and scary. I saw the film as a metaphor for today's culture and what could happen if we continue this path of how we think about ideology, sociology, politics, and religion, in general...
Most of the story centers around how the US government saw Oppenheimer’s very loose communist connections after World War II. The story's been told so many times it's kind of weird how history paints Oppenheimer, the atomic age at the end of World War II, specifically, around those years afterwards were “McCarthyism” became a really big thing and this country had to blame people to put itself in the position it is in now with how the “Military Industrial Complex” and the “Government” appear as two distinct different authorities, not as one, working together. Almost immediately after the bomb was created the United States was trying to consolidate its power and control over the scientific community and the public...
The film itself is fine. It’s really long, really slow, told in a very abstract and artsy sort of way. The film was promoted as if it needed to be seen in IMAX format and I will argue that it absolutely was not good enough or big enough to warrant that headline. As good as the look of the film is, it isn’t some big, special effects oriented flick. The effects, while good, are not the best nuclear bomb explosions in a film. Actually, I would probably label them as sub-par, but they work for the film. Will this film give one any real insight on the man, his politics and beliefs? I do not think so. It’s just an interesting way to tell the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer... Nothing more… Nolan does a good job here, but it isn’t his best work and I feel like in a year people are going to forget this film was even made. You’d have to be a really big Chris Nolan fan to love this film. However, it was a good watch, just do not expect to have your mind blown.
For me seeing the lovely and talented Florence Pugh, topless and near naked in her scenes in the film were done very tastefully and it was hard to NOT look at her. She is just so stunning and I love her body but also dig her art. She always does great work and to see her in this light just solidifies that for me. Would love to see her in more horror though. Man does she really kickass in “Midsommar.”
So, yeah, love “Oppenheimer” or don’t, it’s still a good watch, but if you watch it with today’s culture in mind, to me, it was scary to have people like this in control of weapons like this. However, history does show we have made good decisions with nuclear weapons. We have not dropped a bomb or fired a missile with the intent to destroy since the days of World War II.
That has to count for something…
"The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. It has led us up those last few steps to the mountain pass; and beyond there is a different country." "The history of science is rich in instances where scientific insight has been the impetus for profound social change." ~J. Robert Oppenheimer...

i was recently tagged by @plavoptice and @missanthropicprinciple for variations of this! thanks to you both!!!
favorite color: pink + yellow 💖💛
currently reading: i’m not particularly committed to one read at the moment; i’ve been bouncing between rereads of lmmm’s anne’s house of dreams and libba bray’s the sweet far thing, as well as doing a very slow read of how to do nothing by jenny odell. i also just reread the midwife’s apprentice by karen cushman for the first time in many years, and damn, that is a perfect creation. i am definitely going to give catherine, called birdy a reread before the movie comes out this fall!
last song: the big p*ssy energy song on girls5eva, hahaha!
last series: girls5eva!!! i’m finally watching season two and i’m so happy. i forgot how much i love this show. it’s SUCH a goofy joy.
last movie: midsommar. the wellington paranormal episode inspired me to finally watch it, bwahahaha. it was worth a watch and quite riveting, but not as good as the wellington paranormal episode, obviously
currently working on: i’m not actively writing anything right now; have been doing a bit of editing on an old novel project and just beginning to plot a potential premise for a new story. and also daydreaming of writing a rory/paris runaway bride au except i can’t remember how to start writing a fic. the thing i’m truly working on in life right now is figuring out how to spend more time offline -- because i’d like to have my mind not going in every direction at once and the internet really doesn’t help me with that -- and it is very hard and i’m bad at it! why must smartphones exist to tempt me @ every turn?!?!

📺 + 🍬?
Good ones, thank you!! I especially love talking about movies.
📺: Do you watch horror movies? If yes, which are your favorite?
I’ve always been a big horror movie fan, but my tastes have changed drastically through the years.
When I was younger (like in college) I was really into super face-paced, campy, gory movies like You’re Next (2011), House of 1,000 Corpses (2003) Scream (1996).
I’m also a big fan of slower, visually striking horror movies that use violence in a very specific way like Suspiria (1977), Midsommar (2019), Blood and Black Lace (1964).
However as I’ve gotten older, it’s harder for me to watch these types of movies (especially the first ones I mentioned). If I’m watching a horror movie now it’s usually a very particular type. They’re more like thrillers until the very end but have this eerie energy with great cinematography. I know that’s super specific, but my second favorite movie of all time falls into this category (the 1974 Wicker Man). Some other examples would be like Rosemarys Baby (1968) or The Witch (2015).
🍬: All-time favorite candy?
So I’m actually not a big candy person. Really I don’t much like sweets, so candy often just tastes like an intense sugar bomb to me lol
My two exceptions are gummy bears (which I absolutely love for some reason 😅) and any specialty shaped Reese’s (but I hate the regular ones lol). The second one was my dads favorite candy so that’s probably why I love them 💕

Oppenheimer - A Biographical Drama
Christopher Nolan, the director of the film, has stepped away from his usual blockbuster content to create a unique biographical drama that focuses on the theoretical physical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer's contribution in World War II and his Manhattan Project. Sam Waterston is a force as the nerdy scientist, while Emily Blunt delivers a bulldog-like performance as his biologist wife Kitty. Cillian Murphy With the assistance of an outstanding cast, Cillian Murphy proved he's among the top actors of his generation with his brilliant performance in Oppenheimer. The film explores the life of the theoretical scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the aftermath of his invention of the nuclear bomb. The actor was previously praised for his performance in Peaky Blinders, Batman Begins and Dunkirk. The actor put in a lot of effort to make the character of the man regarded as "the father of the atomic bomb". He studied Oppenheimer's body language and spent a long time studying his movements. He tried to stay clear of any kind of behavior. His co-stars have praised him for his work in the movie. He recently talked about how great it was to work with the Marvel star and called him an excellent scene partner. He claimed that his scenes with the Marvel star were among the best scenes in the film. Matt Damon Matt Damon portrays Leslie Groves - the US Army Engineer who oversaw Manhattan Project, which created the Atomic Bomb. He was praised for his performance. He is famous for his performance in films such as Batman Begins and Inception. He also has appeared in Dunkirk, Tenet and other movies. His work on the movie has earned him an 9.2 score on IMDb. Cillian Murphy's J Robert Oppenheimer is played by a man who is a sly and funny counterpoint. He's friendly and smart and these qualities are evident in his performance. The film examines the connection between actions and their consequences as well as the relationship between actions and their reactions, as well as technological advances. The film also examines the government's role and the effect the atomic bomb has had upon the globe. It concludes with a 1953 hearing in the Atomic Energy Commission, a Kangaroo Court that portrays the postwar Red Scare paranoia. Check out the full EW Around the Table video featuring Nolan, Murphy, Damon, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr. below. Florence Pugh Florence Pugh, one of the most famous actors of Hollywood, has a track record that includes both blockbusters and indie flings. She is known for her ability to play complex female characters. Her work in Midsommar, Little Women and other films has showcased her versatility.
youtube
Oppenheimer is a film that focuses on Cillian Murphy, a renowned physicist that played a major role in the creation of the first nuclear weapons developed in the Manhattan Project. The film focuses on the war between Nazi Germany and the United States in order to build the bomb. The script is basing itself on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "American Prometheus" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin The script is a drama about the struggle between renowned scientists and their government officials. Other notable members of the team are Casey Affleck, Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Rami Malek, and Matthew Modine. Kitty Puening plays Oppenheimer’s wife who has become a major Communist Party supporter. Robert Downey Jr. Nolan's passion for IMAX big-screen cameras is put on full display in the film. Whether it's scenes of furious writing on blackboards, or elaborate set pieces that seem to quake and shake like the energy of atomic bombs, the visual impact of the film is stunning. The story centers around J Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) The genius theoretical physicist who was instrumental in helping to develop the concept of the atom bomb and spearheaded the Manhattan Project. However, despite being a respected name in his field, Oppenheimer was viewed as a snob during the McCarthy Era and later removed his security clearance. The group also includes Emily Blunt as his devoted wife Kitty, Florence Pugh as the scientist's troubled lover Jean Tatlock, and Josh Hartnett as the pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence. However, it's Downey who stands out. Lewis Strauss is the founding member of the Atomic Energy Commission, Oppenheimer's rival, and the antagonist of the film. Watch the YouTube video

Hi! I was wondering about Florence Pugh’s rising rising, could you guess it ? 😇
Alright I don't know this girl and I also forgot she was dating fucking zach braff so I hate that hate that man xoxoxoxo
oh this is so annoying LMAO I'm not certain about any of these actually but these are two guesses that I don't strongly stand by:
Taurus Rising. I don't like where her moon is, but that makes her aquarius placements prominent. I actually were looking for placements that spoke for her strong reliance on family but this worked out I guess lmao. She has her capricorn stellium in the ninth house and her MC is placed there as well, which is opposing a Cancer IC in the third. Dedicated, motivation, higher education and possible travel all being involved in her career. All I really know is that she is needs her family to replenish her energy or for like 'happiness', and they're all on social media or they post each other on there a lot so that IC kind of makes sense if I'm stretching the hell out of it.
Libra Rising: Don't like that rising at all but that places her Capricorn stellium in the fourth, but she's not really private about herself or her family. Like her personality is pretty. You get her. Her two aquarius placements wouldn't carry her that hard with a stellium that big. Plus that puts her MC in the eleventh which doesn't make sense unless someone helped her get her first gig (which is for every job but this is usually signs of like networking like your contacts very helpful in this aspect but as far as I'm aware, she just did her own thing). Her IC is in the fifth so that makes a bit of sense but the rest of her chart really doesn't
aaannndd as soon as I finished this post I tried out a Pisces Rising LMAO. She'd have her saturn in the 1st so she'd be really critical of anything she does as if she's never good enough, I'm not sure if she possesses that quality? Moon in 4th with the IC there so a lively home that focuses on mental stimulation but also laughs. Her stellium would then sit in the 11th which makes a biiitt more sense for the social media portion, and she'd have a Sag MC along with those aqua placements, which are then sitting in the 12th. Good placements for midsommar lmao.
If I had to rank it'd be Pisces > Taurus >>>>>>>>>>>>> Libra

twst cast & my favorite movies
Tumblr media
not a secret. i love movies. i love love love love LOVE movies. and currently i’ve started compiling a whole ass list of my favorite movies of all time. still expanding but i thought it would be fun to assign some of my favorite movies to the twst cast and which ones would be their favorite. but yeah this is mostly a shitpost.
and yes the photo is from the craft. beautiful beautiful beautiful girls watch the craft. and are gay.
if anyone wants my full list then i will happily provide.
NRC STAFF
dire crowley
the craft by andrew fleming i hate to assign one of my favorite films of all time to crowley but it also fits so well. it’s a movie that leans on the more gothic side of things. lots of blacks and great fashion.
ashton vargas
bend it like beckham by gurinder chadha sports centric so definitely up ashton’s alley. yes it centers on a woc but he finds jess and juliette’s dedication to football absolutely amazing. he’s also most definitely rooting for jess to become as big as beckham.
mozus trein
frida by julie taymor mozus, honestly, would probably be into the really boring, academy award winning stuff. but he would be a sucker for biopics and i feel like he’s a bit of an art history nerd. so this is perfect.
divus crewel
crazy rich asians by jon m. chu divus would totally be into wealth porn. another one of his favorites would definitely be the great gatsby (2012) because of its wealth porn and set design. he’s into pretty designs and especially costume design and cra is full of it.
sam
hellraiser by clive barker sam definitely gives me the vibes of a horror movie fan and that he would, particularly, be into body horror to a certain extent. plus the concept surrounding hellraiser is fascinating.
DIASOMNIA
malleus draconia
el laberinto del fauno (pan’s labyrinth) by guillermo del toro fantasy is definitely malleus’s go to movie genre. he loves fantasy. and he certainly likes watching this movie because it’s such a good mix of suspense, fantasy, and horror. he’s also interested in seeing how other cultures see fantastical creatures too.
lilia vanrouge
alien by ridley scott honestly? probably nostalgia based. like lilia would remember seeing this movie in the theaters. it’s an amazing movie with amazing effects and he’s seen it so many times. it’s just good and it’s old. just like lilia.
silver
none he doesn’t watch movies.
sebek zigvolt
midsommar by ari aster it’s really just a morbid curiosity. like sebek found the color palette appealing and what he expected was...completely different to what he got. and he’s terrified but he cannot look away. it’s become his favorite film because of his morbid curiosity.
HEARTSLABYUL
riddle rosehearts
cruel intentions by roger kumble riddle is IN LOVE with the danger aspect of this movie. he understands what it’s like to be stuck in a stuffy environment, forced to be perfect and forced to perform 24/7. the danger, the drugs, the sex. it’s all so enticing to him and he’s completely drowning in the corruption of it all. and he also thinks the ending is bullshit.
trey clover
ratatouille by brad bird trey’s into cooking so naturally, this would be the perfect movie for him. he loves the aesthetic and loves that he can hear all the sounds of the kitchen while watching the movie. it’s cute. and it’s definitely a movie he showed riddle and riddle also fell in love with.
cater diamond
legally blonde by robert luketic there’s nothing much to say here. cater definitely can relate to elle woods and he channels her energy. he’s all into the fashion of the movie and he loves it. it’s such a good movie. and he’s unafraid of it too. definitely did an elle woods costume at one point.
ace trappola
grease by randal kleiser ace is secretly into musicals. like he’s embarrassed to admit it until you find his collection of musicals and grease is his favorite one. he definitely loves the greaser aesthetic and he’s definitely busting out his vocals in “hopelessly devoted to you.”
deuce spade
thirteen going on thirty by gary winick sweet, simple. cute, adorable. definitely gives deuce butterflies when he watches it. such a sweet love story and he can so relate to wanting to be someone different and having to figure himself out.
POMEFIORE
vil schoenheit
black swan by darren aronofsky vil would feel this movie deep within his soul. perfection? check. ambition? check. beautiful makeup and costuming? it’s all down his alley. plus he strikes me, oddly enough, as someone who enjoys horror and thriller (probably on the down low though).
rook hunt
the princess bride by rob reiner rook’s definitely into high fantasy and love stories. so this is literally the perfect movie for him. he’s definitely crying about how beautiful princess buttercup and westley are. i would also think he could see himself in westley to a certain extent.
epel felmier
shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings by destin daniel cretton it’s the most action heavy movie i have on my list of favorite movies and epel definitely gives off the vibes that he’s into comic book movies. he’s definitely at the theater for the spectacle rather than the plot.
SAVANACLAW
leona kingscholar
scream by wes craven meta horror that is also suspenseful with a bit of campiness. leona strikes to me as someone who definitely enjoys satire and meta movies. so scream (1996) is right up his alley.
ruggie bucchi
the people under the stairs by wes craven easily the most relatable film for ruggie on my list. it’s a horror movie that has intense social commentary about reagan era politics and urban housing and racist landlords. and the story essentially is eat the rich. right up his alley. it’s great to see the villains of the movie get what they had coming to them.
jack howl
she’s the man by andy fickman the only other sports related movie i have on my list honestly. yes jack most definitely finds plenty of the movie outdated but he’s all here for encouraging viola to pursue her passion for soccer. he understands what it’s like to feel that ambitious. plus he strikes me as someone who likes comedy.
OCTAVINELLE
azul ashengrotto
the social network by david fincher it’s a movie about a guy that builds an empire using coding. kind of sounds like something up azul’s lane. he’s definitely more into biopics and drama than any other kind of genre. he’s also most definitely providing commentary on what went wrong in each lawsuit and how to get away with it smoothly.
jade leech
none this man doesn’t watch movies.
floyd leech
the conjuring 2 by james wan listen, unlike me, floyd wouldn’t like this movie for its clever use of long takes. he would like this movie because of how batshit weird it is. like think about it. demons, hauntings. he would find this movie more of a comedy than a horror movie. like he’s definitely into horror but sees it as comedy more than horror.
SCARABIA
kalim al-asim
encanto by byron howard and jared bush i promise i don’t say this because it’s disney. i’m saying this because kalim is absolutely in love with the colors of the film. i would also argue that he relates to the family dynamics since he probably has seen the same dynamic play out in his own family (naturally since it’s big). he’s definitely magically gifted but the movie calls to his soul.
jamil viper
carrie by brian de palma i feel like jamil doesn’t watch movies. he’s more of a tv show person rather than a movie person. but carrie is one of those movies that everyone’s heard of and everyone acknowledges as like amazing because it is and everyone knows about. so it’s a safe fall back movie. jamil is also definitely giving off horror fan vibes too.
IGNIHYDE
idia shroud
the fifth element by jon besson idia strikes me as someone who would absolutely LOVE sci-fi. so of course this movie is perfect for that. it’s just the perfect movie to satiate all of his sci-fi cravings. plus it’s got a really engagin storyline.

I don’t know if I see Brittany Murphy as your grown up Taylor or Harley more but either I was I live for it.
Hi!
I feel like I'm going to crush the hearts of so many when I say this, but I've never pictured Brittany Murphy as my fancast for adult Taylor, and I've never pictured Brittany Murphy as my Harley Quinn, either.
I think Brittany Murphy was a beautiful and talented woman and I can see why so many fans practically frothed at the mouth to pair her with Heath Ledger's Joker -- she was the cornerstone of so many J/HQ videos I used to watch back in the day, and I'm sure all of us J/HQ fans who are old enough to remember can recall the Joker/Harley video Tear You Apart, which I consider to be iconic. It felt like watching the Joker/Harley film we never got to see, and it was riveting.
Brittany Murphy had both an innocence and sweetness to her (I adore her big, round doe-eyes) and she had an infectious smile, a certain messiness to her in certain roles that made her feel relatable, like a best friend -- but she also looked like she could be lethal when she wanted to be, like she could pin you where you stood with just a single look. These are all great Harley Quinn qualities to have, and the chemistry between Heath and Brittany -- constructed purely by the fanbase -- was, and still is, super palpable. Both of them just had this energy, even when fans were pairing clips of the two of them from a handful of completely different films. My hat goes off to the video editors and creators out there who really made the Ledger Joker and Murphy Harley Quinn pairing feel so tantalizingly real.
Tumblr media
I also think there's something so tragic about Brittany having passed just a year after Heath did. I'm convinced that if she were still here with us, she very well could have gone on to play Harley Quinn instead of Margot Robbie.
With all of that being said... growing up, I was never really a fan of Brittany Murphy -- and it wasn't because I didn't like her, but purely because I was never exposed to any of her films. To this day, I've never seen Uptown Girls, 8 Mile, or Sin City, and I didn't watch Clueless for the first time until earlier this year, I think it was (which I loved). Actually, apart from Clueless, I don't think I've ever seen any Brittany Murphy films, after perusing through her filmography. I want to say I attempted to watch this one thriller/horror film she'd starred in shortly before her passing (in an attempt to jump onto the Brittany Murphy fan wagon) but I know I never finished the film and, unfortunately, it wasn't very good.
I've gone back and forth between imagining several different actresses to play adult Taylor (originally I had used Amber Heard, as many of you all know), and for a hot moment, after seeing Midsommar and falling in love with Florence Pugh, I had even considered her as adult Taylor, although I feel she's too young and doesn't quite look like I imagined Taylor to look like, even though Florence Pugh has some major acting chops to get the job done. Recently I've been toying with the fancast of Billie Piper for an adult Taylor, as I feel she probably most closely resembles teenage Taylor. That being said... I've never really seen Billie Piper act, and I know she's British, so I have no idea what she sounds like as an American (ironically, Romi Van Renterghem, who I've fancast as teenage Taylor, is also not American, and hails from Belgium) so I don't know what her American accent sounds like either!
I'm really okay with readers imagining whoever they want to fill the role. That's really important to me.
As for my fancast for Harley Quinn... it's still Katheryn Winnick. I tried digging up a post where I had talked about casting her as Harley Quinn and the kind of Harley I would imagine her to be, but sadly I can't find the post.

Thanks for the ask and sorry for the ramblessss!

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Super Green
The Green Knight s finally out and i can see it without having to wait a month and a half! I thank A24 for this rather quick turnaround because this thing has been on my radar fr what seems like forever! I’ve written about this before but A24 is my favorite studio releasing content. Neon is a close second and Netflix is making a real charge, but A24 releases classics. Some of my all-time favorite films are A24 products. Ex Machina, Hereditary, Under the Skin, The VVitch, Uncut Gems, Zola, Midsommar, Lady Bird, Eighth Grade, The Lighthouse, High Life, The Monster, Enemy, Climax, Room, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Disaster Artist, and Under the Silver Lake have all impressed in one for or another, all of them A24 offerings. This studio is f*cking amazing and i cannot sing it’s praises enough. They’ve been around for less than a decade, A24 was founded in August of 2012, and they’re brought this level of quality consistently. The Green Knight has all of the workings to slide right into my all-time list, just like Ex Machina and Hereditary did before it. Let’s see if i really love it as much as i think i will.
The Exceptional
The first thing that hits you is how f*cking gorgeous this film is. Seriously, i was immediately captivated by that opening scene with Gawain rushing for Mass. It definitely opens up as the film progresses and you are treated to one of the most visually striking films of the year. This movie could give Denis Villeneuve, Ari Aster, or Robert Eggers a run for their money. Seriously, you can frame several shots in a museum and no one would know the difference between that and the Van Gophs on display.
I r0aely mention this but it’s absolutely necessary that i do in this particular review because it was just that memorable. The sound design made this film. I’m not talking about music choice or score, but the actual sound effects for specific scenes. That sh*t was some of the tightest I've ever hear on a film and it really added to the overall experience. Just the way the Green Knight creaked and popped as he moved was more than enough to get this mention but there is so much  ore than just that. I hate that i had to see this at home because, f*ck, this thing would have sounded like god in a proper theater.
I mentioned that you can frame these shots in a museum before and a lot of that shine belongs to the cinematography. The shots chosen for this film are breathtaking. I imagine a lot of that has to do with location but even the scenes filmed in dank castles and murky bogs popped with that same, meticulous, shot composition and it really gave those scenes life. The were ties when my jaw dropped at the majesty of a scene. The one with the giants immediately comes to mind. Like, f*ck, was that beautiful to witness.
In that same breath, you have to know when to pull back. Editing is just as important to a film as anything else and The Green Knight is cut with a precision I've rarely seen. This thing has no fat whatsoever. It presents to you exactly what you need and little else. I love that. I love that this film has a story to tell and it tells it with extreme prejudice. These cuts were made with intent. That’s rare nowadays.
I also have to give a nod to the use of color and lighting. Again, it’s not something i ever really focus on but goddamn is it necessary for this review. Light plays a very important role in how this story was told. Certain scenes absolutely need it and others are perfectly accentuated by it. It takes a deft hand to juggle such a nuanced aspect of film and The Green Knight has done that the best this year. So far.
This film has a very real, very potent, atmosphere. It’s not tension, not like Uncut Gems of Good Times, but there is this unrelenting sense of dread that runs through this entire film. It’s measured and restrained but it’s always there. I appreciate that. For a film to illicit such emotion out of me is testament to the mastery of it’s visionary.
All of the praise I've given to the technical aspects of this film would be for naught if i didn’t recognize the director, David Lowery. This dude is fast climbing the list of my favorite directors. I actually listed  bunch above but, after seeing what he’s gone with this film, dude is really making a case for himself. He did the Pete’s Dragon remake which i hear as pretty good, and A Ghost Story but i haven’t seen either. Not really my cup of tea. But if they’re as good as The Green Knight, i might have to revisit that thought because, holy sh*t, this dude can direct the f*ck out of a film.
The writing is on point. I legit hesitated to put this on here because it is the weakest aspect of  everything else in this film but that is misleading. The writing is exceptional. There is no way this film could be as good as it is, if the script was dog sh*t. The material given to these performers had to the top tier in order for them to give the performances they did and and they definitely f*cking did that!
This whole cast really f*cking delivered. Sarita Choudhury as Mother and Sean Harris as the King were easily the best of the supporting cast but everyone else brought that same energy. Joel Edgerton, Kate Dickie, and  Barry Keoghan, all deliver powerful performances. Hell, this is the best I've ever seen Erin Kellyman act and i have to give a lot of credit to the overall quality of this cast delivered. That said, there are three individuals who put everyone else to shame and i say that knowing exactly how much praise i just heaped upon them all.
Alicia Vikander comes in and delivers on two roles, Essel and the Lady. This isn’t surprising at all because she always delivers. I’m never disappointed by her performances. Admittedly, i haven’t seen many but that’s because she is very particular about the characters she signs on to portray. That said, it’s weird the two performances she’s done that immediately jump out to me, are both with A24 films. Her Eva in Ex Machina, and that film in general, is what made me even take notice of both her and A24 as a studio. Here we are, seven years later, and she’s still blowing my mind. F*cking exceptional.
Ralph Ineson is almost unrecognizable in the Green Knight make-up but the second he opens his mouth, you immediately recognize that gravitas. There is a weight to this character and you f*cking feel it with every move Ineson makes. Dude isn’t in it much but the scenes he does appear in are absolutely stolen by this big, green, maestro of his craft.
More than anyone, this is Dev Patel’s film. This dude is a great actor but it’s rare someone gets a part where they can really bite into the content but that is not the case with this role. No, sir, this sh*t was tailor made for Patel and he definitely digs right the f*ck in. His Sir Gawain is just as good as his Jamal Malik from Slumdog, if not better. Seriously, this film would be nothing without Patel. As outstanding as every other aspect that i gushed about in this brilliant goddamn film, the very best is Dev Patel’s performance. Seriously, that sh*t, alone, is worth the watch.
The Verdict
The Green Knight is f*cking exceptional and exceeded all of my expectations. This year long wait was more than worth. It's the best film of the year so far, leap-frogging into my top twenty all-time and I've seen thousands of films. This thing is a masterpiece on all levels. Narrative, plot, lighting, performances, sound design, composition, editing, score; It's the closest thing to a technically perfect film I've seen in quite some time. If Dev Patel doesn't get an Oscar nod for this, there is no justice in the world because he f*cking carries this movie. Patel is easily the strongest force driving this incredibly compelling watch, but Alicia Vikander, Erin Kellyman, Sarita Choudhury, Ralph Ineson, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, and Barry Keoghan all match that energy with f*cking gusto. I was absolutely mesmerized by the way these absolute masters in their craft, embodied and gave their respective characters life, particularly Vikander. She never disappoints.
The only issue I see that would hinder someone actually getting into this film is the fact that it's a little long in the tooth. You never really feel it, as long as you buy into the fact it's a character study and not a high concept fantasy film filled with dragons and sh*t. If you think Michael Bay and Zack Snyder are the pinnacle of cinematic excellence, pass on this. You won't make past the first tn minutes. Also, make better life choices. No, this is about Gawain and it never deviates from that core drive. Weird sh*t happens, sure, but it's nothing as fantastical as Smaug or a Balrog. Even so, this f*cking movie kept me glued to the edge of my seat. I loved every second of it and cannot sing it's praises enough. My only regret is that I didn't get to see it in a proper theater. This f*cker would have been a real experience to see on a proper cinema screen, especially that shot with the giants. The Green Knight is outstanding and deserves all of the praise it's gotten and so much more.

An Analysis on the History of Gender in the Horror Genre
This is one of my classmates’ final projects for Sociology. I loved it so much I asked for her permission to share it here. Hope you enjoy it too!
Transcript under the cut, since the auto-generated captions are mostly accurate but punctuation is good for comprehension.
TRANSCRIPT:
“My name is Davis Barelli, and in this video essay I'm going to look at the portrayal of gender through the lens of the horror genre.
Women in particular may have a reason to keep coming back to the genre, outside of a cheap thrill. In a study done by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and Google, using the Geena Davis Inclusion Quotient—or the GDIQ—it was determined that women are featured on screen and in speaking roles more than men only in the horror genre. With the advent of the MPAA rating system in the '30s, the kind of horror we know today didn't re-emerge until the '60s.
Making female characters who would later become known as "Final Girls" the vessel for traumatic experiences allowed viewers—especially men and boys coming home from war—to see someone reacting to trauma in the way that they wanted to, but wasn't socially acceptable. Instead, the model for men to see themselves in was the macho, womanizing jock who goes outside to find the big bad, typically resulting in him being the first to die. While there was a lot of good in the survivors of these horror movies very commonly being female, a specific archetype of the female survivor made it clear what kind of girl it took to be the hero.
The Final Girl being portrayed in '60s, '70s, and '80s slasher horror as an innocent virgin stereotype was no accident, what with America experiencing the breakdown of the nuclear family and Christian morals thanks to the free-love movement of the '60s. This led to frequent themes of occultism, homosexuality, and hypersexuality in horror at the time. Characters who gave in to these evils were given a death sentence, as opposed to the Final Girls, who were rewarded for their abstinence with survival.
When films did stray from the norm by casting male leads in sequels in place of the Final Girl, a double standard emerged. Male protagonists were branded as "homosexual" for acting like the Final Girls before them, and the actors who portrayed them had their careers effectively ruined. Where the '70s gave rise to exploitation horror centered on violence against women, '80s niche horror had different scapegoats.
Cannibal Holocaust, released at the beginning of the decade and directed by Ruggero Deodato, tells the story of a group going to the Amazon in search of a missing film crew. They discover footage detailing the gruesome things the crew did to the tribe they encountered before they were killed. Not only is the portrayal of hostile tribes in the Amazon harmful to the actual tribes in the Amazon, but framing the main character of the film as a kind of white savior for not wanting the footage of the tribe distributed is basically rewarding him for the absolute bare minimum.
The other standout film of the '80s notorious for its subject matter is that of Sleepaway Camp. Sleepaway Camp tells the story of a young girl who experiences the death of her family during a boating accident and is sent to live with her aunt and cousin. She and her cousin go to the summer camp and it quickly becomes a bloodbath. The reveal at the end is that the young girl was the culprit, because she wasn't a girl at all, but her twin brother who was forced by the aunt to live as a girl. The narrative of trans people as dangerous, deranged villains pretending to be a different gender due to mental illness or against their will is deeply harmful to the LGBTQ people who were battling misconceptions at the time similar to this, and still are.
This energy evolved with the '90s, which shifted its focus to supernatural teenage hormones, with the likes of The Craft and many others. Looking at the villains of these movies, though, is a clear pointer to the ostracization of the "weird kid" in the '90s. This is most prominently seen in The Craft, where a girl with supernatural powers befriends a group of girls pretending to be witches. She bestows them with real powers and hijinks ensue. The film culminates in the ringleader—who, out of the group, is the least conventionally attractive—being put in an insane asylum for her misdeeds, while the rest of the group gets off relatively scot-free. This served as an unfortunate continuation of the narrative that girls who were weird were to be punished, but if you were pretty, you could get away with it.
With the 2000s filled with American-made J-horror and classic horror remakes, I'd like to skip forward, save for one movie.
In the 2000s a movie came out that caused a huge ruckus over how bad it was, but I think deserves a spot here for its portrayal of teenage girls in horror. Jennifer's Body, directed by* Diablo Cody, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, tells the story of Jennifer getting possessed after a botched human sacrifice because she lies about being a virgin. It was almost universally panned by critics, who called it a "sexploitation film lacking the all-important ballast of sincerity." Both Cody and Fox—who were gaining fame for Juno and the Transformers franchise, respectively—were already written off by critics, most of whom were men, before the movie had even been released. In reality, Jennifer's character was unique for being the mean girl who gets killed off, the big bad, and a revenge film-esque survivor, all in one. And her best friend, "Needy," was the sarcastic, dorky, sexually active Final Girl we never would have seen in classic horror.
The last decade has given rise to a genre dubbed "intelligent horror," ushering in an age with less mindless bloodlust and more nuanced characters and themes. Directors Jordan Peele and Ari Aster are arguably at the forefront of the intelligent horror genre; Peele's Get Out and Us giving people of color representation in a severely whitewashed genre. Get Out, especially, has received praise not just for the representation of people of color, but the very real, very prevalent issues of race and police brutality. One of the most important aspects is the depiction of the white savior character in the form of the protagonist's girlfriend, who is revealed to actually be a villain, showcasing the dramatization of the danger of performative activism and how that affects people of color.
Ari Aster, on the other hand, deals with themes of mental illness and family trauma, something unfortunately somewhat universal. While mommy issues and cults are nothing new in horror, Ari Aster's work frames both subjects very differently, especially in regards to the women in his films. Midsommar heavily focuses on Dani, the protagonist's, mental health and manipulation by others throughout the film, as she navigates grief unapologetically and realistically. This portrayal of grief in Midsommar from a woman's point of view is so important, because Dani is clingy, she's anxious, she's emotional, and she's human. As opposed to the polished, over-dramatic depiction of women and their emotions that are so commonly seen in horror.
Over the decades, horror and its portrayals of the human experience have shifted to continue being a compelling mirror for the issues of the time. But something that will always be current is that we can be scared.”
End of transcript.
*Jennifer’s Body was written by Diablo Cody and directed by Karyn Kusama

Have you ever watched a movie in class/school that made you cry?  Oh for sure. We had to watch It’s A Beautiful Life and I know I cried every single time I watched that movie, whether for school or on my own time.
What’s the earliest you could go to bed at night and feel okay about?  I don’t really get this question. I feel like it would make more sense if it asked how early I’m willing to wake up in the morning...? Anyway, I don’t pay attention to the time I sleep at night. Sometimes I’ll pass out as early as midnight, and sometimes I’ll be up until 3; it doesn’t matter to me.
What is you favorite type of lunch meat?  I’m not into those in general.
What time of the year do you dislike the most?  The heat in April and May is just brutal and uncalled for. It gets so hot and disgustingly humid and most times the aircon can’t even do much to quell it.
Do you put ketchup on your scrambled eggs?  Yeah, banana ketchup since that’s what we usually have a bottle of. Generally, I have banana ketchup with most of my breakfast dishes too.
What is your favorite color to wear? I don’t really have a favorite to wear those days mostly because I barely go out anyway and there’s been little need to update my closet.
Are you an overachiever?  Seems like the type of question you should be asking my parents, not me haha. Personally, though, I’m fairly proud of what I’ve accomplished.
What physical feature do you wish you had (i.e. freckles, curly hair)?  Maybe longer legs and smaller teeth, but I’m not exactly insecure about mine.
What fictional character (i.e. Bambi, Scarlette O'Hara) would you marry? Did you just raise the possibility of marrying a deer? Anyway...since I mentioned Two for the Road in the last survey, I’ll go with Mark from that movie. Seems like my type of partner.
How long have you gone without shaving (girls- legs, armpits; boys- faces)?  With legs...around 2-3 weeks. Armpits, maybe about a week or so. Never more than a month for either.
What is the meanest thing you have ever said to someone else?  For the most part I’ve always been cautious of what I say; writing, on the other hand...I’ve written stuff on my diary wherein I let out all my frustrations against my mom. I know they were mean because she cried over them – but that also entailed snooping through my stuff, so I’ve never felt bad about it. I meant those things as I wrote them because it was my safe space, and she violated that. That’s on her.
Did you ever go through a phase where you wrote bad poetry?  I did, but I instantly realized it was bad so I stopped as soon as I began.
What is your favorite thing about your life?  How everything seems to have fallen in its place these days. There’s really little to complain about and I’m grateful for that.
Save all the animals that die during road kill or save 1 human from a fire?  Animals.
Have you ever painted a picture of somebody?  No.
How many real bfs/gfs have you had?  One.
Did you enjoy your past relationships?  I did.
Name a comedy that you like. White Chicks. << I love this choice, let’s just go with this one lol.
Could you wait until marriage for sex?  Sure.
What’s the best Nirvana song?  I don’t listen to them. I know a couple of songs but I don’t like them enough to be my favorites.
What was the last thing that impressed you?  The new Butter remix with Megan Thee Stallion.
When was the last time you were in a pet store?  Years, years ago.
What nationality is your last name?  Spanish or Portuguese, I’m not super sure.
What’s your favorite kind of chips and dip?  I never dip my chips; I just have them as is.
Who was the last boy that you saw cry?  Idk...maybe one of my cousins from one of our family reunions last year. I don’t get to be around a lot of boys or guys.
Does your mom know you do surveys?  No. I’ve never had to raise it and I can’t see a situation where I would have to.
Have you ever had a serious injury?  Yeah, I got a big wound from when I went snorkeling around a decade ago. I wasn’t provided flippers so when I was kicking to stay afloat I managed to hit the coral reefs underneath repeatedly, which majorly scraped and gashed my left foot until it was an open, bleeding mess. It was infected for weeks and I’m surprised it didn’t leave any kind of mark or scar.
What was the last thing you achieved?  Handling a campaign for a major client successfully and getting good coverage and results for it.
Would you enjoy being famous?  Probably, but I wish I had some sort of talent or skill that would propel me to popularity in the first place hahaha.
What’s under your bed?  Some things I collected from past hobbies and interests, like all my old wrestling magazines.
Do you enjoy travelling?  Love it.
Have you ever belonged to a club? If so, what was it?  I mean I joined an org in college, which technically makes me a member for life. I’m not name-dropping but it’s one of the two journalism organizations in my alma mater.
When was the last time you drank strawberry milk?  I can’t recall. I don’t drink strawberry milk.
Have you ever managed to collect all the fast food toys in a set?  I never collected those.
Do you have a clock in your room?  Nope.
Did you have a good driver’s ED teacher?  I honestly can’t remember. I only had like three sessions with different instructors for each, and the one instructor I remember having was extremely cranky and impatient.
Which of Britney Spears’ songs is your favorite?  Hold It Against Me is pretty fun.
Does mind over matter work for you?  Sure.
Are you paranoid?  Oh yeah. Overthinker is pretty much my middle name.
What is the best thing about winter?  I wouldn’t know but considering the things associated with it, I’ve always believed it would be my favorite season.
Have you ever been truly in love?  Hmm. I think so, yeah. I’d give myself that.
Are you currently planning a trip?  Nah. Nothing set in stone, but Angela, Reena, and I have been talking about flying to South Korea next year. We’ll see.
How many plants are in your home?  Several. My mom is a bit of a fan, but it’s nothing obsessive.
What is your favorite possession?  I treasure my BTS merch, I guess haha. Nobody is allowed to touch them or move them around without my permission. As often as my mom likes to barge in my room and touch my stuff, she seems to understand and doesn’t lay a finger on any of the merch either.
Have you ever felt like you were too nice and way too often overlooked?  Sure. But it's never really mattered to me; it just feels nice to be nice and do nice things for people. It does feel nice to be thanked, but I don’t necessarily do it for the recognition.
What movies have tripped you out?  I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Midsommar, Anomalisa, Under the Skin, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Killing of A Sacred Deer are a few of them.
Did you rollerblade as a kid? Do you still rollerblade?  Yesssss, I even had a pair as a kid. I got into it because I loved to ice skate, but it turned out I wasn’t as good as gliding on the ground so I ultimately preferred ice skating. Anyway, no, I haven’t done rollerblading in years.
Would you ever settle into a relationship that wasn’t right for you? Do you know friends who are in relationships just so they have someone to sleep with at night?  I did. I stayed because it’s where I felt safe and I didn’t know where else to go or what else to do outside of it.
Would you take a dirty picture of yourself for someone you are dating?  Sure.
Do you use earplugs or a sleeping mask when you sleep?  Nope. I find them more distracting than anything else, and they actually keep me from sleeping.
What summertime treats do you love?  I don’t have any.
How picky are you when it comes to choosing who to kiss or not kiss? I am VERY picky. I have to be really interested in you. < Yeah, this sounds about right.
What do you hate most about moving?  The last time we moved was in 2008...and I don’t really remember disliking any part of it. I was actually excited for us to have a home all to ourselves after living with extended family in a cramped house all my life.
Do you feel that having sex anywhere but a bed is more exciting?  Depends where. Sometimes it can be exciting, sometimes it can be inconvenient but you kinda do it out of desperation lol.
Do you drink 5 hour energy drinks or any other kinds of energy drinks?  No, I’m scared of how it would affect my body so I’ve never tried.
Has anyone ever whistled at you?  Countless random men.
Do you like scarves?  They can be comfy if I’m traveling somewhere cold...but I don’t really get to do that often, so.
Is your father homophobic?  I haven’t seen any signs from him. My mom is much more likely to exhibit internalized homophobia – she just did the other night.
Do you take gummy vitamins?  No, only when I was a teenager.
Have you ever applied make-up on a guy, for any reason at all?  I don’t think so, nothing I can recall.
Who would you like to meet before you die?  I don’t have any goal person in mind.
If your dream was to be a model, and a big opportunity came up, but you had to be nude, would you take it? Hmm, probably not. What’s the most ridiculous conspiracy theory you’ve ever heard of?  The Avril Lavigne doppelganger one is extremely hilarious and I read up so many thread about it on Twitter just so I can see how far people can stretch it.
If Heaven and Hell exists, where are you going when you die?  I don’t care.
Who is the person that you are afraid of losing, above everyone else?  Either of my best friends.
What is one thing that pisses you off pretty much everyday?  The weather.
Is there anyone you know that you feel should consider therapy?  My mom.
Do you like any of the songs on Twilight, or the actual movie/saga itself?  Yeah the soundtracks are actually fucking great. The person who took this survey before me named Supermassive Black Hole by Muse, and that’s one of my favorites from all the soundtracks. The song Slow Life in New Moon is nice, too. How old was the first person you kissed?  She was 17, going on 18.
Will you be a strict parent one day?  I’d have some rules set but I wouldn’t suffocate my kids.
Last person to stand up for you?  Heck if I know. I can do that for myself.
Have you been to a baby shower?  No.
Who were you with the last time you went to the movie theater?  My ex.
What’s your favorite high school memory?  Hiding a same-sex relationship from my conservative, homophobic Catholic teachers.
Do you like relationships, or do you prefer to be single?  I like being single these days.
What is one adventurous thing you’d be willing to do?  Trying out the Nevis Swing in New Zealand.
What subject at school did you absolutely hate?  I saw no point in studying chemistry.
Italian food or Chinese food?  Chinese. I like Italian cuisine, but sometimes I find it a tad bit salty for my taste.
Do you like to make flash cards when you study?  Not flash cards but sometimes I’ll write my notes down in several index cards because for some reason I retain information better that way.
Has anyone ever told you that you’re a good singer?  No.
Do you ever watch TED talks, live or online?  No. I never saw the appeal of most of them, honestly.
I dare you to write the name of a person you strongly dislike.  Gabie.
What do you think about Marilyn Manson?  I have nothing to say about him tbh.
Biggest trouble you’ve ever gotten into at school?  Nothing beyond getting into an argument with this kid in 2nd grade and getting sent to the counselor’s office for it.
Do you own one of those “professional” DSLR cameras?  I used to, until I handed it down to my sister...and until she let it smash onto the ground because she didn’t place it on her tripod properly when she was filming one time. I still don’t get why she’s so defensive about it; I wish she’d just admit she majorly fucked up on that. Does it bother you when you see a 6th grader with a bunch of gadgets?  It makes me silently judge the parents more so than letting myself be bothered by a child.
Did you buy yearbooks every year in high school, or did you not bother?  We’re not offered the chance to get yearbooks unless we’re in graduating years.
Do you have Restless Legs Syndrome?  No.
Jalapeños: yay or nay?  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
Did you ever play Minecraft? No. I can’t care less.
Did you ever have a Club Penguin account? Were you a member?  I didn’t.
Do you know anyone that seems to not have any common sense?  Me, sometimes. Hahahaha.
What do you think is the biggest injustice that was ever done to you?  The way I was broken up with, like what the person who last took this said. I’m not tortured by it and her anymore, but I don’t think I deserved to intensely mull over about what I could have possibly done to be broken up with the way she did.
What type of person angers you the most? Abusive people that think only they matter and have no consideration for how their actions affect other people. < This pretty much hits the nail on the head on how my ex is, so I’ll just go ahead and agree.
If you could change your appearance, how would you alter it?  I’d get braces again and...that’s it, really.
What are your feelings on feminism?  I support it and I support how it advocates equality.
Describe your first relationship?  I’ve only had one relationship so I’ll just answer the following question.
Describe your last relationship?  Internally toxic; uhhh healthy at some points I guess, when she wasn’t being a selfish prick; a disaster towards the end.
Can you honestly say that you always practice safe sex?  I honestly don’t know what constitutes ‘safe sex’ in a same-sex relationship, sooooo idk if I have.
Why do you think your most favorite film touches you so deeply?  It’s a realistic take on love and I appreciate that it took its sweet time to highlight the ugly sides of love and marriage. Also, Audrey Hepburn taking her acting chops to the next level was just beautiful to watch. She was always a fantastic actress in all her movies, but I could tell her acting in Two for the Road had just a little bit more depth to it.
What do you want people you meet for the first time to think about you?  That I’m nice and approachable.
Do you feel protective over someone?  My friends.
What perfume/cologne do you wear?  Heat Rush.
Where did your vehicle come from?  My parents got it for me as a high school grad gift.
What was the color of the bridesmaid dresses of the last wedding you went to?  I haven’t been to a wedding since 2007, and back then I was designated as a flower girl lol. I’ve never been to a wedding where I was chosen to be a bridesmaid.
What is your favorite way to eat chicken?  CHICKEN SANDWICH. Also chicken wings.
It is your birthday. You hope the cake is:  Oreo cheesecake topped with 24 macarons.
What do you wear to bed?  Something thin and airy.
What were you doing at 8pm last night?  I was watching Bon Voyage.

Brent’s Top 10 Movies of 2019
Tumblr media
Scorsese is probably my favorite living filmmaker, but I’ll be honest, when I heard that Scorsese was making this movie, and *how* he was making it (heavily digital de-aged actors) I was a bit skeptical. De Niro and Pacino haven’t been turning in interesting performances in quite awhile, and Pesci came out of a decades-long retirement for the movie as well. On top of that, the first trailer released did little for me. All that to say I was an idiot to doubt the master.
Scorsese returns to the crime genre that he re-invented many times over the years, this time with the eyes of a man in his 70’s, looking back on his life and career. The movie is very long, but in my opinion, it needs the length. The viewer needs to *feel* the totality of a life, and as is his intent with The Irishman, the *consequences* of this specific life. The final hour or so of this movie feels like a culmination of Scorsese’s career in many ways. The energy and entertainment of a crime/mob epic, with the fatalism and philosophical leanings of a movie like ‘Silence’. It’s a 3.5 hour movie that I’ve already rewatched, and actively want to again, so that alone ought to speak volumes.
Tumblr media
Harmony Korine made one of my favorite movies of the 2010’s, the neon-soaked and often misunderstood ‘Spring Breakers’, so I was already in the bag for whatever he did next. When I heard it was a freewheeling stoner comedy where Matthew Mcconaughey plays a guy named ‘Moondog’ costarring Snoop Dogg, I reserved its location on my top 10 list.
This movie doesn’t have the empty heart at its core that defines Spring Breakers, opting instead for a character study about a ‘Florida man’ poet after his life pretty much falls apart. It’s basically plotless, stumbling from one insane, borderline hallucinatory sequence to the next, but I just loved living in the world of this movie. Beach Bum almost feels like a deliriously fun VR simulation of hanging out with Matt McConaughey and his weirdo friends down in the Florida keys. This is one that probably won’t pop up on many top 10 lists but I really adore, and will surely rewatch it a dozen times in the years to come.

Let the record show, I’ve been a huge fan of Bong Joon-ho since I first saw his monster movie/family drama ‘The Host’. Some time later, he went on to make ‘Snowpiercer’, one of my favorite movies of the last decade. All that to say, I think Parasite is probably his best movie, and a true masterwork of thriller direction. It also has his usual brand of social commentary and a script filled with darkness and humor, following a South Korean tendency to juggle multiple tones throughout, sometimes all in one moment or scene.
Parasite also follows a big 2019 trend of commenting on class and social dynamics between the rich and the poor. I think that’s part of why it’s done incredibly well at the box office (especially for a Korean language film), the fact that people can relate in a huge way, regardless of which country your from. Parasite is one of the most entertaining movie viewing experiences I’ve had this year and I’d recommend everyone check it out.

If you were to ask me what the funnest movie-going experience I had in 2019 was, I’d have to pick Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’. Hot off making one of the best Star Wars movies ever made (don’t @ me) Johnson decided to make a passion project in the vein of classic Agatha Christie style murder mysteries, and the results are a total blast. Filled with clever twists and turns, weaponizing the structure of murder-mysteries against the audiences expectations, it stays one step ahead of you the entire time.
Aside from the clever mystery of it all, it’s the actors performances and chemistry that really sell this thing. Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette are expectedly great per usual, and Daniel Craig is having the time of his life as Mississippi private-eye Benoit Blanc, but the heart of the movie is relative newcomer Ana de Armas. She brings an emotional weight and anchor to the movie that always keeps you emotionally invested amidst the terrible, money hungry backstabbing by the other heightened characters. I hope everyone sees this movie and Johnson is able to give us another Benoit Blanc adventure somewhere down the line, I’ll be there opening day.

Nobody makes an upbeat, feel-good movie like Ari Aster does! After last years light and breezy ‘Hereditary’ (which I liked a lot but didn’t totally love) he’s back with a completely riveting and emotionally draining (not to mention horrific) masterpiece. What I connected to most in Midsommar is the journey of Dani, played incredibly by Florence Pugh. The way the film portrays the relationship between her and her dog shit boyfriend played by the (usually) charming Jack Reynor keeps you invested in every twist, perfectly paced out over the movies admittedly long runtime.
I won’t get into spoiler territory, but where this movie goes in the end is what makes this a fully 5-star movie for me. After putting you through hell, like Aster loves to do with bells on, Midsommar ends in a euphoric, psychedelic orgy of music and violence that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Midsommar rules so hard and I can’t wait for whatever twisted thing Aster cooks up next.
Tumblr media
One of my increasingly favorite brands of movies is a finely crafted, primo slice of dad-movie cinema, and James Mangold has made one with Ford v Ferrari. The story chronicles the partnership of ex-racer and designer Carroll Shelby and racer Ken Miles as they work to make a Ford that can compete in the 24 hour race of Le Mans. Bale and Damon are a blast to watch bounce off each other and the race sequences are pretty damn thrilling, combining (what I expect is) a solid amount of great VFX with practical racing to great effect.
I also didn’t expect it to have as much to say about the struggle to create something special by passionate people and not committees while also inside the very machine that churns out products on an assembly line. Just a random note, this original movie was just put out by 20th Century Fox, now owned by Disney but that’s completely unrelated and I’m not sure why I’d even bring that up??? Anyway, I love this movie and dads, moms and everybody else should check it out.
Tumblr media
If you saw my list last year, then it must appear like I’m some diehard Mr. Rogers fan. I don’t really have many memories watching his show as a child, but what the documentary ‘Won’t You be my Neighbor’ and this film by Marielle Heller have in common is a shared fascination of his immense empathy and character. It’s only right that America’s dad Tom Hanks should play him, and I was surprised at the end that I was able to get over his stardom and accept him as Rogers. He’s not doing a direct impersonation, and I think it’s all the better for it, instead opting for matching his soft tone and laid back movements.
On a pure emotional level, this movie was a freight train. It didn’t help that the movie covers a lot of father stuff, from losing your own to becoming one yourself (2 big boxes on the Brent bingo card). Heller’s direction is clever in its weaponizing of meta/post-modern techniques, such as one incredible fourth wall break in a diner scene. It literally breaks down the barrier between Mr. Rogers, we the audience, and the films intent to make us feel something.
I cry a lot at movies, that much is well known, but it’s rare that a movie makes me weep, and this one did. Even thinking about scenes right now, days later, my eyes are welling up with tears thinking about the messages of the movie. Mr. Rogers and his lessons of empathy and emotional understanding have rarely been as vital and important as they are right now in our world.
Tumblr media
Robert Eggers first film ‘The Witch’ from 2015 is one of my favorite movies of this decade, possibly of all time, so my hype for his black and white, period piece two-hander ‘The Lighthouse’ was through the roof. Even with sky-high expectations, it still blew me away. With dialogue reminiscent of The Witch in its specific authenticity to its era, to the two lead actors giving all-time great performances, It was one of the most entertaining film viewing experiences I had this year.
There’s something about both of Egger’s movies that I really keyed into watching this one: his fascination with shame and the liberation from it. Where Witch was from the female perspective, Lighthouse literally has two farting, drunk men in a giant phallic symbol fighting for dominance. It’s less a horror film than his first, but still utterly engrossing, demented and specific to his singular vision. I can’t wait to see 20 more movies from this guy.
Tumblr media
This is another big movie of 2019, like The Irishman, where you can see the director looking inward, at what his films mean and represent. It initially caught me so off guard that I really didn’t know how to feel about it, but after seeing it again, it’s one of my favorites of the year, and probably Tarantino’s filmography overall. More akin to something like Boogie Nights or Dazed and Confused, letting us live with and follow a small group of characters, it mostly doesn’t feel like a Tarantino movie (until the inevitable and shocking explosion of violence in the third act, of course).
‘Hollywood’ is the most sincere and loving movie Tarantino has made, interested in giving us a send off to an era of Hollywood and artists that have been lost or forgotten (Some more tragically than others). In the end, the movie functions similarly to ‘Inglorious Basterds’ in it’s rewriting of history to give us catharsis. “If only things could have worked out this way.” Luckily in movies, removed from the restrictions of reality, they can. And once upon a time in Hollywood, they did.
Tumblr media
Uncut Gems probably tripled my blood pressure by the time the credits rolled. A slice-of-life story about a gambler/dealer in New York’s diamond district, the movie follows Howard Ratner, played by Adam Sandler in easily the best performance of his career. Ratner is basically addicted to living at the edge of a cliff, being chased by violent debt collectors, juggling a home life and a relationship with an employee, and fully relying on risky sports bets to stay afloat. It makes for a consistently tense and unique viewing experience, expertly directed by the Safdie brothers.
Something that might not work for everyone but that I personally loved, is the chaotic way in which the movie is shot. What feels like loosely directed scenes, with characters talking over each other and multiple conversations happening at once, adds an authenticity and reality lacking from most other movies. It’s more adjacent to Linklater (thanks to Adam for the comparison) or Scorsese’s earlier films (also fitting, that he’s a producer on this). Following Howard Ratner as his life descends into chaotic hell was one of the best times I’ve had watching a movie this year.
