What is... Alpha vs. Beta Reader?
Most writers do not publish a work without it going through the process of being critiqued by multiple people beforehand. People that do the critiquing are alpha and beta readers.
But where is the difference?
Alpha readers come in first. They can read your draft at any point, you can even just run your first ideas by them. The alpha reader should focus on the general story, the bigger picture. They tell you where plot holes are and if an idea or scene in underdeveloped. They will tell you if one of your ideas just don't translate on the page just yet. You should take their feedback and apply it.
After working on the draft with the feedback you got, it's time for the beta reader. This one comes in towards the end, when the overall draft is finished. A beta reader should represent your target audience and should tell you what they liked and didn't like as a reader, not a fellow writer. They can tell you about what they felt while reading your story and if they cared about the characters. Beta readers will examine the whole story like the alpha readers, but they will do it more in-depth, which is why it's important to have them come in at the end, when you've gone through multiple rounds of revisions of the overall story.

Bloodied petals - Xavier Thorpe x reader | Part.2
Summary: Denial and weird roommates aren’t helping your health to improve. During the Poe cup, Xavier starts to suspect that something is wrong.
Warnings: angst, mention of blood, swearing.
A/N: definitely not proof-read and English isn’t my mother tongue, but the hype for the angst™ was stronger Also, shitty timeline, I have legit no memory of how long days pass in this show.
[Masterlist] [Part.1]
Tumblr media
A few days had passed since that night. The frequency of the coughs hadn’t died down, although it was always quite unpredictable. Some days were easier than others, you only sneezed a few petals here and there; but some others were filled with sharp pain in your chest, uncontrollable coughs and whole flowers throwed up at the worst moments. You even started to feel lightheaded sometimes, as the unforgiving pressure on your chest squeezed harder and harder with every cough.
Thankfully you always managed to excuse yourself when you felt the pressure of a rough cough starting to build up in your chest. Like now, you were kneeling on one of the restroom’s floors, bent over the toilet sink and throwing up everything you could to try to free your lungs at least a little. Silently praying that no one was around to hear your choking sounds, you managed to throw out the last flower out of your throat. Wiping your mouth with the back of your trembling hand, you flushed the toilet, watching the white petals coated in blood being washed away. Sighing, you closed the toilet lid and sat on it, burying your face in your hands. Those last days had been hectic and your condition hadn’t improved the slightest. It even seemed worse than before, with some violent setbacks like now. It sometimes felt so hard to breathe for a few minutes, while you had never experienced any serious health issues before.
Maybe it was the stress; after Rowan’s aggression at the fair, Wednesday’s allegations about his death, then him being expelled, nothing made sense these days. Xavier hadn’t mentioned anything from that evening in his dorm. The day after had been a little bit awkward, but then the both of you acted like nothing happened; still, you started to put some distance between you. Firstly because you didn’t want to make things more weird, and second because you didn’t want anyone to know about that strange condition of yours. Plus, the sensation of aching lungs seemed to be worse every time you were around him. It surely didn’t mean anything, but it was a good excuse to avoid him until your health improved.
Checking your phone you noticed that your next class was about to start in a few minutes. So you gathered yourself, wiped the last remaining traces of tears or blood on your face, and got out of the restroom.
You slid on your seat in literature class just in time before the teacher started their lecture. Trying to pull out your notes and pen the more discreetly you could, you didn’t notice the worried look Xavier gave you from across the room. It wasn’t like you at all to be late for class. Even less to be so clumsy, he noted internally as you dropped your pen for the third time in five minutes. Xavier frowned. Something felt off about you and he couldn’t help but feel guilty about it deep down. You had left his dorm hurriedly last time ; he didn’t know exactly why but he still had the feeling he had something to do with it.
So when class was dismissed and all the students exited the room he rushed to catch you in the corridor.
“Hey,” he called softly when reaching you.
Your head whipped in his direction, eyes wide. You had been so deep in your thoughts you hadn’t heard him.
“Hey,” you breathed back. His sudden apparition had almost startled you.
Xavier opened his mouth, about to say something but then he noticed your wince at the loud barks and laughs of a few werewolves students passing by. The quad was full of students at this break time, and your recent lack of sleep made you irritable to the ambient noise.
So he grabbed your hand and muttered something about the place being too loud as he gently tugged you in a corridor. The sudden contact had made your heart race despite the familiarity of it; you silently prayed that he couldn’t feel your racing pulse under his long fingers, delicately wrapped around your wrist.
The two of you finally reached one of the corridors above the quad, much quieter than the place full of students. When it was clear that no one else was up here, Xavier let go of your wrist and turned to you.
“Hey,” he repeated, “are you alright?”
The sudden question made your heart start to race in panic. Has he noticed something? Did he find a petal in his dorm?
“You were late in class earlier,” he clarified at your lack of response, “you overslept or something?”
You almost sighed loudly in relief. “I- yeah I overslept this morning,” you lied with a small smile - you hoped it was reassuring enough. “Enid must’ve forgot to wake me up ah ah.”
Even if you laughed about it and brushed it away, Xavier was still not fully convinced. You were a decent liar to anyone else, but not to him, he knew you too well for that.
“Look, about what happened last night in my room…” he started awkwardly, licking his lips nervously, “I’m sorry you left so suddenly.”
You looked at him, eyes wide. “I- no that’s okay,” you stuttered, surprised he brought that up. “I had stuff to take care of, anyway.”
“Really?” he asked immediately, narrowing his eyes.
Taken aback by his fast response you could only stare at him, mouth slightly agape and lost for words. He was totally not buying it.
“Because you left in quite a hurry,” added Xavier, crossing his arms over his chest.
You looked away, licking your lips nervously. Why couldn’t he drop it? Or at least, figure out what had been bothering you? Maybe it’ll help you understand, because you weren’t so sure of what had hurt you so much either.
“It’s nothing, okay?” you mumbled quietly, still looking anywhere but at Xavier. “I just…I didn’t want to be too much, that's all.”
Too much, or overstepping in your fascination for Wednesday, you thought internally. But then, a hand came to cup your cheek and turn your face back to Xavier.
“Hey,” he said softly, and his voice made you look up at him. His warm brown eyes bore deep into yours, like a reassuring presence. “You will never be too much, okay? Not to me.”
You lightly gasped at his words, you didn’t even realize you released a breath. The tension that had been building inside your chest, full of anxiety and stifling sorrow, suddenly disappeared. Like his words were enough to blow away the petals that were threatening to come out your mouth.
“I know I acted as an idiot, okay?” he continued. Though his hand never left your cheek, and you were internally grateful for that. “I shouldn’t have dropped everything to start sketching while you were there.”
This felt like a cold shower. Ah, so that was what he thought he did wrong. Maybe it was, but the memory of what happened was still painful to you.
“I can’t stop you from drawing Xav,” you said, reluctantly pushing yourself away from his touch. “It wouldn’t be fair of me.”
Xavier frowned at you as you readjusted the strap of your bag over your shoulder, like you were ready to go. Never in all the years he had known you, you had ever fled his company. Yet, his presence seemed to make you uncomfortable now. Shit, how much of a prick had he been?
While he was stuck in his internal debate, you sighed. Of course, this topic was over for him. So you turned and started to walk away from him. That made Xavier snap back to reality, and a sliver of lucidity suddenly hit him.
“This is about Wednesday, isn’t it?” he called from behind.
That made you stop dead in your tracks and snap your head to him, eyebrows raised high.
“What?” you whispered.
The fact that it had made you react was maybe a sign that he was somehow right. As your mind tried to understand it all, the look of surprise on your face somehow reminded Xavier of the sadness that had emanated from you when you had left his room that night. It made his heart squeeze because he knew it was because of him.
“I- I know her. From before,” he explained, unsure about how to present things. “I met her when we were kids. She saved my life”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” you asked perplexedly.
He opened his mouth once, twice, searching for the right words. “I don’t know,” he finally admitted.
Your throat felt suddenly tight. Like something bitter was stuck. “Is that why you admire her so much?” you asked, and you hear your voice crack a little. Hopefully with the distance, Xavier wouldn’t notice.
He didn’t. “I don’t know,” he repeated, still unsure of himself. He seemed as lost as you. “I just want to get to know her, you know?”
Deep in your chest, you felt your heart crack a little. It felt like the lightweightness you had felt only a few minutes earlier were gone, leaving your rib cage feeling like it was crushed by vines.
And yet, you couldn’t help but swallow everything, the bitter taste, the petals that started to gather in your lungs and the burning sensation of tears, and put on a brave smile.
“Well then, good luck Xav,” you smiled, hoping that your lips wouldn’t wobble too much. “I hope you’ll succeed in that.”
After all, you were his best friend. It wasn’t fair of you to stop him from reaching new friends, you had never had any problem with any of them before. But once again, none of his other friends had captivated him like that.
As you walked away once again, you heard him call you again.
“You’re still my girl, you know that right?”
His words made you stop. Slightly glancing behind your shoulder, you could see his sad eyes plagued with guilt; but you knew better, and recognized the sparkle in them. The unmistakable sparkle that twinkled in his eyes when you were speaking in hushed tones together, sharing secrets and moments, only the two of you. When he called you his girl, like he started to years ago. The two kids whose guardians were too busy to properly take care of, who swore to have each other’s back.
The familiarity of the nickname flooded your heart with warmth, and to Xavier’s relief it also made your lips curl into a fond smile.
“Yeah,” you answered softly, “I know.”
Walking to your next class, you felt lighter than before. The oppressing sensation of your lungs being squeezed was still here, always crawling behind your rib cage, but it felt like there was a little less pressure than before. Maybe there would be fewer petals today.
Tumblr media
“Ah, there you are!” cheered Enid the next day, as you joined her on the yard after one of your classes. “Guess what! Wednesday agreed to substitute for Yoko’s role as co-captain for the race!”
“Really?” you asked, giving your gloomy roommate a surprised look.
“I never turn down an occasion for a crushing revenge,” she said flatly.
“It’ll be a roomie's bonding time!” squealed Enid, looking at the both of you excitedly. “All three of us, competing for the Poe cup!”
Wednesday raised her eyebrow at you, “I didn’t take you for the type to indulge in those childish games, Y/N. You just lost my entire respect.”
You shrugged, still unaffected by your new roommate’s brutal comments, “The school’s offering an occasion to legally try to drown other students, I’d be stupid to not have fun in that.”
“Fair enough,” she observed sharply. “You’ve regained my respect.”
That made you chuckle. Even if the apparent infatuation of Xavier for Wednesday pained you, you genuinely enjoy your new roommate’s company. She was weird, but again, everyone kind of was at Nevermore.
“What are you and Xavier to each other?” asked Wednesday suddenly.
The unexpected change of subject made you choke slightly. You had definitely not seen that one coming.
“Excuse me?” you said perplexed.
“I asked about the nature of the relationship between you and Xavier Thorpe,” deadpanned Wednesday.
God, why was her question making you so uneasy suddenly? You had never minded to bring the subject up, after all rumors at Nevermore were frequent and you were indeed close with him. But after what had happened - or almost happened - last time in his room, you weren’t so sure of what to say. Licking your lips nervously, unsure of how to present things, you turned to your other roommate silently pleading for help. But Enid only giggled excitedly.
“They’re best-friends to lovers' material,” she said with an amused smile.
“I don’t understand a single word you had just said,” sneered back Wednesday.
“We grew up together,” you finally said to interrupt Enid from spilling all of her theories about the two of you. “We’re close friends that’s all.”
The blonde werewolf gave you a wicked smile, “Suuuure you are.”
Rolling your eyes, you refocused on Wednesday, “Why are you asking?”
She only narrowed her eyes at you, “Gathering intel on potential suspects, that’s all.”
That brought a nervous laugh out of you, “Excuse me, what?”
“Nothing for you to worry about,” she snapped back, “if I ever need information about him I know who I’ll need to bribe,” she finished before turning and walking away.
You stood here dumbfounded for a moment, before coming after her.
“Hey!” you called her as you caught up with her until you were now facing her. “I don’t know what you’re suspecting of, but Xavier’s innocent, alright? And I won’t tell you anything if you’re trying to drag dirt on him, okay?”
Wednesday stared at you before answering, “You’d make an acceptable person if you didn’t let your emotions cloud your judgment so pathetically.”
“Thank you for the advice about social skills,” you said dryly, “but also, none of your damn business.”
She only shrugged and stepped away. “He’ll come to me anyway, considering he’s acting like a sad puppy for some reason.”
As she walked away, her words rang in your head. The harsh squeeze on your lungs it suddenly triggered was proof enough that she was unfortunately right.
Tumblr media
The day of the Poe cup came around faster than you expected. Still, you were glad for the occasion to drift your mind away from the plaguing thought of your concerning condition. Enid and Wednesday were still unaware of it; when the coughs had started to shake you awake at night, your silencing spell had come handy. Now you cast it almost every night to prevent your roommates from hearing your gruesome choking.
“Aww we match!” clapped Enid as you and Wednesday joined the rest of the team in your cat costumes.
“Don’t get used to it,” groaned the Addams.
“So, are we ready?” asked the werewolf, “Everyone knows what they have to do?” At the collective nod, she cheered again and all the team members took place in the canoe.
“I thought you’d be co-captain, Y/N” observed Wednesday while grabbing her paddle.
“I’m much more useful at the back, trust me,” you said with a grin, “witch powers.”
That almost brought the tiniest smile to her face. At least Wednesday seemed to enjoy the competitive aspect of the race. Glancing to your right to the Joker's canoe, you caught a glimpse of Xavier at the front of the boat. You looked at his face painted in creepy clown makeup, and for a brief moment, you thought that he was actually pretty attractive like that. Shaking your head to chase the intrusive thought you mentally scowled yourself. Now was not the time! Despite that you glanced at him once again; only to feel your heart squeeze a little more at the sight of him looking to Wednesday. His words a few days prior rang in your head. You’re still my girl, you know that, right? Yes, you knew. But even if you were his girl, his oldest friend, it wasn’t you he was currently staring at like you were the only person in the world. You couldn’t hold back the cough that pushed itself out of your throat violently this time. The intensity of your coughing fit was new, shaking you so hard you ended up bent in half with your hand clutched on your mouth, trying to tune down your stifling noises.
“Y/N, you okay back there?” called Enid from her seat.
The wet sensation on your hand made you wince. “I’m fine,” you wheezed, “ ‘s nothing”
As soon as the coughs calmed down, you threw whatever you had regurgitated on the canoe floor before anyone could notice. Lifting your head up to recompose yourself, you caught sight of the face of your best friend, concerned in his eyes.
‘You alright?’ you saw Xavier mouth.
The only thing you could do was to nod before the sound of a blown horn indicated the start of the race. Without wasting a single minute, every team started to row like their life depended on it. Your eyes briefly flickered to your feet; between them laid three whole white lilies tainted with blood. You gulped. Now was really not the time.
After an eventful crossing of the lake, where you had your head almost chopped off by the Joker’s ax, your team finally managed to reach the island. While Wednesday ran to find the flag, you stayed to ensure nobody tried to sabotage your canoe – as Enid did to the Joker’s.
As you saw the two other teams coming back with their flags and sail again you started to worry about Wednesday. Has something happened to her? Before you and Enid started to talk about who should check on her, she appeared again, flag in hand.
“I got it, let’s go!”
All of your team jumped in your canoe in a hurry, and left the island in the blink of an eye.
“We’re far behind everyone else!” shouted one of your teammates. “We’re not gonna make it!”
“Y/N!” shouted Enid, “Think you can give us a little push?”
Immediately dropping your paddle inside the boat, you inhaled deeply, “I can! Brace yourselves ladies, hold tight!”
Trying to slow down your breathing you concentrated hard, reaching down to your powers and started to mutter the words of incantation. The water at the back of the boat suddenly started to shiver, and the next thing your team knew, the canoe was propelled onward by a hard push. They all gripped the edges of the boat to steady themselves as you gained speed, rapidly gaining a foothold your opponents.
“That’s amazing!” screamed Enid over her shoulder, “How long do you think can hold this?”
Deep into concentration you tried to not break the spell, “Long enough for us to reach the shore if everything goes smoothly!”
Out of the corner of your eye you noticed a move in the water. One of the sirens.
“Wednesday!” you called her, “Eight o’clock!”
She whipped her head, immediately identifying the threat and nodded sharply. Thing crawled out from under her seat, and dove into the water. Oh, you loved that hand.
The outline of the shores were noticeable by now, so you reached deeper into your powers to try to give your boat a little more speed. The canoe accelerated again, going past Bianca’s team's flowing boat, but as you thought you could make a home run of this crossing, a violent cough startled you. The sudden stop in the push of your power shook the boat, your other team mates screaming in surprise while you tried the hardest to breathe.
“What’s going on?!” asked Enid.
Failing to swallow your coughs you could only hope for this fit to be a brief one, “Don’t cough stop,” you wheezed from your seat, “start cough cough paddling, we’re almost there!”
They all grabbed their paddles and started to paddle like their lives depended on it. You tried to keep up their paces, but the unforgiving coughs were weakening you too much. For a moment, you wondered if you weren’t going to pass out in the canoe. But then, as you approached the shore the euphoria of close victory on the boat gained you, and with a rush of adrenaline, you jumped out of the boat with your teammates, rushing to the finish line.
Cheers echoed everywhere around you, congratulating the Ophelia team. Even the feeling of petals scratching in your throat couldn’t ruin your joy for once. You knew swallowing it down was coming to bite you later, and that you were going to spend the evening throwing up petals and blood, but for now you wanted to feel normal.
Below on the shore, as the other teams reached the land Xavier’s eyes landed on a white and red spot on the ground of the black cat’s canoe. He frowned at the bloodied flowers, especially when he realized they were where you had sat. How did the flowers end up here?
Whipping his head in the direction of the joyful cheers, his eyes landed on you, your broad smile as Enid’s arms were thrown over your shoulders. It had been a long time since he hadn’t seen you smile like that.
But the way you turned away your face and covered your mouth with your hand to cough, just for a few seconds, didn’t escape him. Nor the slight smudge of blood dripping on the corner of your mouth just before you wiped it.
His eyes flickered to the blood-coated flowers in the boat, then back to you and a cold feeling suddenly sank inside of him.
Something felt off. Xavier didn’t know why yet, but something about you was very, very wrong.

Intentions are Everything  |  Chaos Universe OneShot for @fridayd13th
Summary: Wednesday and Enid (age 22) reconnect on a rainy night after routine and the season of life they are in keep them apart. WC: 4k exactly (welcome to layla's <5k challenge) Rated: T (I’m at work it would absolutely end best in sex but a Clifford the Big Red Dog stuffie is looking at me in my supply closet and I feel judged.)
Note: As I’m experimenting with some new writing rules for myself to set myself to different standards and expectations for future projects (not even fanfiction); I’m weaponizing my competence and refusing to use my available contract hours assisting others who do not have withitness and follow-through. When I’m at work and not with the children on a break per required of my union contract, I’m locking myself in my supply closet to write! I'm too efficient! Everything is done through April! However, it’s simply not the correct setting to be working on my multi-chapter work; I need at least two hours at a time for that. These one-shots have to be prompted by someone else (I can’t have stewing on the content), under 5K, and I’m not allowed to work on them at home. I'll probably upload these to AO3 once I have a few of them complete.
The prompt "Wenclair/Domestic/Chaos Universe/Rainy Day" was from @fridayd13th - thank you so much for everything you’ve done to support my writing over the last year, and all the other fanfic authors you have impacted by your sharing, comments, and kindness. Thank you! & a Black Menagerie update is in the editing phase and will be up tomorrow sometime!

It wasn’t supposed to rain.
And not just because she already had outdoor plans, but there hadn’t been a drop forecasted (Wednesday had been checking obsessively). If there was a way to light the sky on fire, she surely would have…only to have that flame extinguished, immediately – like her carefully structured night out.
That was dramatic. (Wasn’t she always? And to think, Enid was the one at the theater that evening.) With a silent pivot, Wednesday adjusted course without hesitating, not wanting to waste a moment, even if it included one of the heaviest sighs she’d ever released. She couldn’t be taken down by reanimated corpses of bigots, genocidal maniacs, werewolf councils, Hydes, or the weather.
Life had gotten between herself and her fiancée over the last few months, and as she managed to be surprised by a late April rain, it showed. Between her endless lectures, bookwork, and mock trials, Network meetings and Enid’s grueling six-day-a-week performance schedule that only had her off on Mondays (Wednesday’s latest day at law school, naturally), their time together that didn’t involve one of them working on something was rare and precious. After a heated argument the week before, ended by the redhead who lived in the basement unit of their townhouse, Wednesday had stormed off to New Jersey. A train ride and taxi to her family’s home had her barreling into her mother’s study wet (it had been raining then too), upset, and in the foulest of moods.
It had taken Morticia quite some time to put together the fractured pieces of information her daughter was revealing and advise the same thing that the other wise woman in her life already had; Enid and Wednesday just needed to spend meaningful time together. When all of their hours in one another’s space were domestic routines and transitional time trying to catch each other up on the latest without being part of it, they were bound to spat.
Enid had been more than a little bit upset that Wednesday’s solution to their problem was running away and had hotly asked for the night apart when Morticia said that she thought it would be more practical for Lurch to drop her off than deal with the train again. At the notion of spending the night alone in her parents’ house settled in, Wednesday had a meltdown the likes of which they hadn’t seen from her in years. Morticia had slept with her when she finally convinced her to at least lay down, likely in fear that she was going to slip into a meditation and wind up in the wrong side of the ether because of her twisted energy.
The next morning, she’d had a long and overdue chat about romance with both her parents. They spoke from the heart – it was mushy and disgusting. Their own experiences made her want to bury her head in the sand. Yet - Wednesday had desperately needed to hear it. She and Enid were a far cry from the two of them. Though she might’ve possessed some Gomez-like traits every now and again, Wednesday was her own, unique breed and would love her own way, too. But, to her chagrin, hearing their perspective did help – and it put her plan into motion.
Enid wasn’t home when Wednesday arrived – she had a matinee that afternoon and then an evening show as well. With all her focus, Wednesday tidied up their apartment not only in proper order, but also made sure she’d put Enid’s favorite sheets on the bed, started the incense she liked the best, and ordered all her prized snacks for the week when she had groceries delivered. After a long talk with the couple downstairs, about recovering from a blow-out (they were more than familiar with that topic), Wednesday also committed herself to certain actions for the week ahead.
Unfortunately – the experimental medication she was on, after the sleepless night before, forced her to fall asleep when she laid in bed, trying to write a formal apology to her fiancée – afraid of forgetting something if she just tried to speak it all. It would still be from the heart, but scripted so she made sure to make every point.
That was how Enid woke her up with sweet, gentle kisses when she’d gotten home from her show, close to eleven. She had a fresh release of tears, and Wednesday’s notebook in her hand, stroking her cheeks and promising – she was forgiven, and that she was also sorry, for how she’d responded and reacted to everything.
In her grogginess, Wednesday made a promise – that she was going to give Enid a real date; she was going to honor her with something special, not routine, not a drive-by conversation. She wanted to give her a night that Enid could treasure.
And so, with two hours until her show released that Friday, Wednesday cooked, baked, transformed the attic space and prepared the environment with all the heart and ambiance-creating ability she had.
Locating her umbrella and stepping into black Wellies, she took the pink ones by the door into her hands and a jacket when she realized the temperature dipped as well. With a black and white striped snake over her shoulders tucked into her collar to stay dry, she made the familiar trek out of their Upper West Side apartment to Midtown – a journey she used to take when she was committed to making it to Enid’s show at least once a week.
How quickly things changed when novelty wore off. She hadn’t been to the theater in at last four months, she realized – vowing to change that, too.
One metro ride and a few blocks walked in the rain later, she stood outside the theater door, grateful the rain would keep most of the obsessive, obnoxious out-of-towners from lining up for autographs. Her snake poked his head out curiously when the door opened a few times, hoping for Enid, but it was always orchestra first, Wednesday reminded Augustus softly.
Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait long. Only three other cast members groaned at the rain before heading out themselves before Enid let out a full whine upon opening the door, then a completely delighted gasp. “Wednesday! Ohemgee, you did not have to come all the way here!”
“I didn’t want you caught in this beautiful weather without proper gear,” She said, passing Enid’s rainboots to her. She let out an excited squeak of appreciation, dipping back in and swapping her shoes, then accepting the rain jacket before positioning herself under Wednesday’s umbrella, wrapping an arm around her waist. Holding the handle and depositing a kiss to her lips, ignoring how she still had on her stage makeup and dreadful, bright red lipstick that probably transferred, Wednesday clarified, “There is an obvious change in plans from our rooftop dining experience in Brooklyn. But our evening is not ruined, simply altered.”
“Awe, well – that’s so sweet. I didn’t even know it had started to rain! I’m glad I don’t have to be super bummed out, either. Thanks for taking care of everything! Hey – how was the exam?”
“Grueling. Torture. It took me every available moment to finish. Naturally, I scored a hundred four,” Wednesday said with a little smirk as the sky emptied itself onto the city, hard raindrops rattling the waterproof covering above them as they moved to the subway station. “And the show?”
“The usual,” Enid shrugged. “Friday night crowds are notoriously off – though this one wasn’t so bad. I don’t know. It’s been almost seven months now – there’s rumblings about auditions the Crazy for You revival moving to the US, I’d for sure be auditioning for that – this role has me feeling a little...locked in. I’m not, like, over it – but I’d be up for something different.”
“Insert here a cheesy line about being crazy for you in any show you’re billed in. I also recognized on my way here – I haven’t come out to watch in so long. I’m genuinely sorry for the pacing of our time together and the inadequacies I’ve brought, Enid.”
“Oh, you do not need to apologize for that, Wednesday! This is my job, as much as it’s art. It’s not like I’m going to catch you in the courtroom on any kind of regular basis – that’d probably be sups inappropriate. Well – we know in the future that I’ll see you in the Supreme Court – but that’s like, you coming to opening night of me as a leading lady. It’s different. I don’t expect my partner at a weekly curtain call.”
“Still,” She said as they waited on the platform after taking the slippery stairs down, keeping her umbrella folded low to drip onto the already sopping tile, “I do like watching you perform. Even if this isn’t my favorite show – I’d like to see you soon. I’ll leave father and Em behind, though.”
Enid giggled. “I don’t mind their…enthusiastic reception to my stage presence,” Enid found careful words as the train arrived – packed, of course, for a Friday night on the 1 in Midtown. Finding a place to stand where they wouldn’t be absorbing too much liquid from others who’d been caught in the rainstorm unprepared, they took the short ride back uptown, making it home just as another couple was about to enter their shared foyer.
Emiliana and Josie were soaked to the bone, obviously caught in the storm, and in Emiliana’s case – thrilled about it. Josie looked a little less than enthusiastic and both Wednesday and Enid backed away when her wife tried to embrace them. “It’s their date night, too – leave them alone,” Josie warned, tugging her back by the shoulders with a sigh.
“Well, I do not think they are going to be dining on roofs, bien-aimée!” Emiliana argued, about to go in again when Josie popped the lock on the lower-level unit with a groan, wishing the girls a good night – whatever they ended up doing, before ushering Emiliana downstairs while she spoke rapidly in French about which movie she wanted to watch and why would she need a shower, she was already wet?
Unable to hide her smirk, Wednesday took off her boots, setting them on a rug while Enid popped the umbrella open to dry off (chancing her luck) and shrugged out of her coat, hanging both damp garments on a hook before locking the main door, then opening their own when they entered the kitchen.
Enid’s enhanced smell must’ve picked up right away what Wednesday had baked for her. She looked at her with a little gasp, a near twinkle in her eye. “You didn’t? You did! Oh, Wednesday!”
“Snickerdoodles are upstairs already,” She said quietly – hating the way that ridiculous word rolled off her tongue; but if they were Enid’s favorite, easy-to-prepare desert – of course. “As is everything else that I could prepare in advance, there are a few things I need to finish now. Everything you need for your favorite bath is out and ready for you.”
“Awe, not possible,” Enid said with a little pout. Wednesday crossed her arms, suspicious about that – Enid’s preferences had hardly changed since she was seventeen and they first started their innocent soaks together. “You won’t be in it!”
Almost snorting, she rolled her eyes and kissed Enid’s cheek. “I cannot be two places at once. Yet. I’m still working on that spell. Go on – I’ll meet you upstairs in thirty minutes.”
“Alright. Thank you, Wednesday.” She returned the sweet little kiss before shaking her head and planting a long one on her lips, despite the lipstick. Wednesday refused to cringe, merely returned it before Enid pulled away with a laugh, wiping the red off her with her thumb. “I frickin’ love you.” With that she winked and headed up the stairs of the narrow unit.
Putting the rest of her plan into motion, Wednesday poured her attention into finishing the meal that she’d started, heading up to the attic to light the candles with a wave of her hand to complete the ambiance she’d started to set up.
Bringing up the last of the food on a butler’s tray she’d stolen from home ages before, Wednesday glanced at the time, hearing the sound of a drain circling. Taking her place up near the small, circular window that was pattered in rain. She lifted the bow of her cello, starting to play a melody of their favorite songs.
Enid took a familiar place on the bench in front of the window, watching Wednesday with a look of love she could see out of the corner of her eye. Her snake traveled from Wednesday’s neck to Enid’s pink, loungewear covered shoulders, licking her cheek, making her smile.
Finally finishing, she stood up, taking Enid’s hands, kissing her fingers before tucking her at the low table of the attic in front of the futon. Plating her a favorite rare beef dish, Wednesday started the small record player on an entertainment unit before taking a seat beside her.
They ate with comfortable conversation flowing – Enid brought up the show she was interested in again, Wednesday asked her to describe the plot – and stared at her with hearts in her eyes as she animatedly detailed the storyline and the roles she’d want to play within it. As she stacked the dirty dishes, moving the tray to the stairs, Wednesday put the cookies on the table, then flushed a little as she began to remove materials out of a basket. Giving a shrug, she hoped that she was matching the energy the moment called for as she explained, “We were going to go to that gallery…but – I…maybe you want to make something to add to ours up here?”
She gestured to the various crafts that Enid had hung up above the futon – a few embroidery pieces she’d experimented with, paintings, collages…
Enid nodded brightly. “I’d love to make something with you.”
The next forty minutes were spent painting on a canvas, the two working together to come up with an inspired design – an interpretation of their snake in the springtime – Augustus looking at it and offering his feedback, requesting more pale pink cherry blossom petals all around him.
As they finished, Wednesday took the dirty brushes and palette along with the dishes, hurrying them down to the sink before returning with a bottle of wine and two glasses. Enid had moved to the cushions, her expression of dopy desire a bit contagious as Wednesday poured her a glass and took a seat. She indicated her own intentions by sitting as close to fiancée as possible, a stacking her legs on top of Enid’s thighs as she twisted into the corner of the couch – just a touch obnoxiously. Enid giggled before taking a sip, drawing an arm just above her knees. She pressed a kiss to Wednesday’s lips, letting out a sigh. “You probably feel like the need to reconcile was largely on you, given how you ran…but it wasn’t, Wednesday. I’ve been just as distracted, and every bit as much to blame for us not spending the time we need together, too.”
Augustus appeared from her collar again and Wednesday smiled at the snake with the gentle sort of parent-like love she’d had for him since the start. “Hey, buddy…do you think you could take yourself to your enclosure for a little while? There’ll be a pinky for you in the morning.”
He let out a small hiss and twisted down her arm, leaving the two in full privacy. Wednesday had another long drink of wine and made a hopeful suggestion. “I have two more exams next week, but then the summer term doesn’t begin until mid-May. Is there any time over the next few weeks that you’d be able to get away from the show for a few days?”
Enid laughed. “I haven’t used an understudy yet! Our swings would be thrilled – I’m sure I could take some time, for us.”
The way she said it made Wednesday chug the rest of the wine in her glass before taking Enid’s from her, sweetly, and placing both on the table. She adjusted her position, sitting fully on her lap. Enid’s arms fell around her waist, pulling her close for a kiss. Wednesday sighed into it, lazily dropping her arms around her shoulders, drawing herself closer, chests touching – even if they were just in comfortable sweatshirts – she loved the feeling. Enid let out a little sound of contentment as her tongue dipped into her mouth, pushing them even closer.
Enid pulled away with a sudden gasp – their teeth almost colliding as a bolt of lightning and crackle of thunder turned the nighttime rain shower into a thunderstorm. She giggled and groaned, sighing into Wednesday’s shoulder as Wednesday felt her heartrate skyrocket and decrease. Tangling her fingers into Enid’s hair, Wednesday just held her close, there, resting her head just on top of hers. “I love you,” She muttered quietly. “I’m really glad we spent tonight together, not just in routine, even if it wasn’t what we planned.”
“Me too,” Enid squeezed her middle, looking up with a sweet gaze. “I love you. I can’t believe how we let time get away from us. Hey – let me send a quick text to let my manager know I’m going to be out of the show – then I’m getting my laptop and my planner – we are so booking a trip for after your exams!”
Letting her go – even if she might’ve rather extended that time together physically, Wednesday figured she could get her fiancée all worked up and excited about time off together and then spend the time together in bed. Enid returned just moments later, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she gave herself a week off without asking – but expecting. Loving that for her self-confidence, Wednesday stretched out on the futon while she started to ramble excitedly, opening a glittery pink date book, actually blathering about what to fill in it. Her excited ramble went on for almost two straight minutes before she paused, mid-sentence, blushing as she glanced back at Wednesday. As she opened her mouth, Wednesday reminded her, “If you dare apologize for looking forward to spending time together…” She snapped her lips together and Wednesday smirked, putting her chin on Enid’s shoulder as she leaned over her. “There’s a full moon next week, too. We could maybe go somewhere that has a forest nearby if you’d like to wolf out. It’s been months, Enid. The Solstice was the last time…it just happened to be on a Monday, otherwise you probably would’ve taken your potion then, too.”
“You really want to spend time off chasing me through the trees?” Enid asked skeptically.
Dropping into a sit beside her, Wednesday took her hand into her own, letting her thumb rub a circle over the ring on her left. “I want to spend my time off with you. That’s all, Enid. I don’t care, particularly, what we do. I would like you to make sure you’re not disconnecting with the wolf part of you…we know the consequences of that. But if you don’t think you need to wolf out to stay connected, that’s fine, too.”
“Hm,” Enid laced the fingers that were playing with hers between them and kissed Wednesday’s cheek. “You know – we could really disconnect from the world, and only connect to each other – which always helps. Go to the Zypher property, be surrounded by mountains? We haven’t been in…what, two and a half years now?”
Liking the sound of that, Wednesday nuzzled her neck, also liking that it wouldn’t involve her traveling by plane, but the thought of being without running water and electricity for an entire week wasn’t quite what she wanted to deal with. Who would’ve thought – Wednesday Addams, a woman of the modern world?
“Or – we go to the Addams house in Jericho? We’d be able to bathe far more conveniently – but still have the woods.”
Enid chuckled into her lips with a kiss. “Fair, fair,” She spoke, pulling back. “Promise me you won’t get tangled up in a Network conspiracy while we’re there?”
With a single nod, Wednesday leaned in for another kiss. “I won’t even tell them we’re in town.”
“Well, that’s not nice. Aunt Larissa would ream you if we bumped into her at the store picking up stuff for dinner and hadn’t told her we were coming.”
“Grocery delivery,” Wednesday refuted.  Enid shot her a look. “We can have one dinner with them. One. I’m very serious. This is going to be our time, Enid. We…we need it. It’s going to be a long summer – I’m so close to done, and the last two semesters are going to be grueling. Remember, I will be hospitalized at some point because I’m going to be so in over my head and taking horrible care of myself and refusing to let you do it for me,” She sighed – wishing she’d never had that vision, years ago. “But until then – we have this time together. I want it to be meaningful – just us.” Thunder made the entire place rumble and Enid nodded, then let out a little sound of sympathy as a slithering snake hurried himself up the steps and into Wednesday’s lap, trembling. “It’s okay, buddy,” She whispered, kissing his cheek as she held him close, letting him circle back around her neck. “Well, just us and the boy.”
Enid acknowledged what she’d said before, “Meaningful. It sucks to think that a lot of the time we do have together isn’t meaningful – and I guess I didn’t really understand that until this all blew up,” She sighed. “It’s hard to think that just because you spend every night sleeping next to the love of your life, it can get routine, so fast. I hate that. I don’t want that for us.” She thumbed her planner. “Do you think – we could pen in some more date nights? This was really nice. Not just dinner because we both happen to be home…which; has been rare for us – but intentional dates. I think we need to make sure we have at least one a month? Once a week would be better – but until you’re finished with school, I think we should be a little more realistic -”
Wednesday tilted her head in a bit of good news. “Actually, we can. Every Monday. My evening course was moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays for the summer class.”
Letting out a little gasp, Enid tossed her arms around her fiancée. “That’s amazing! OhEmGee, this is perfect! Hey – how about we put our first Monday after vacation at that Brooklynn rooftop and gallery, hm? I mean, truthfully – I think I preferred this, just us doing our own thing up here -”
“Then, let’s plan to do our own thing up here,” Wednesday argued gently. “Why go out and force ourselves to do something that neither of us really want to do? Just because it’s what is expected of a couple on a date? You know I would always rather be in with you. We can make it special, so long as we intend to.” She sighed, shaking her head. “Of course. I’ve long ago learned, intentions are everything, didn’t I? I suppose I just never applied it to our long-term romance.”
Enid kissed each cheek, then the tip of her nose. “I do believe I have some intentions for how I’d like to close out this night.”
Wednesday dropped her hands to her hips. “Hm. Funny, so did I. What if our intentions don’t align?”
She gave a playful growl, then nipped her lip playfully, making Wednesday close her eyes and give a little groan. “Yeah,” Enid pulled away, “I’m pretty sure – we both want the same thing. Come on. GusGus, bedtime, buddy. This date night continues for another hour!”
“Oh, that’s all?” Wednesday teased, earning a playful push as she smirked, fully intending on making meaning out of every moment of the rest of their night together.

Arranged Marriage [Alpha Xavier Thorpe x omega reader] - part 2 -final

Part 1, Part 2 - Final
Word count: 3500
summary: As if it wasn't enough that his father never wants to hear from him the first time he does so in years is to warn him that he is trapped in an arranged marriage. Apparently she also frequented nervermore but it didn't matter, no matter who it was he would never agree to any of it.
Note: in this version link marks are permanent. I also inserted deltas but with quite a few changes, here deltas are basically omegas with stature of a beta or omega, stronger than omegas and with more authoritative personality. They still have heat, a sweet smell and usually mate with alphas, the only two deltas Nevermore will have are Wednesday and Bianca.
------
"I love you" whispers Bianca.
Xavier immediately stops, his teeth already brushing against Bianca's skin but thankfully with no damage done. Being loved had always been his greatest desire so why did hearing those words bring a bile to his mouth? The memory of Y/n with tears in her eyes confessing that she loved him springs to mind...Why did Bianca's words seem so false compared to hers?
When he pulls away and looks at her delta she looks so confused but Xavier could do nothing but run out of the room with an almost inaudible "I'm sorry".
He was so confused, why had that memory surfaced at that very moment? Why had Y/n been so sincere? He had done nothing if not reject her and treat her badly then why was she saying she loved him? How could she say something like that without a single trace of lying or uncertainty?
He remembers the one time he managed to talk to his father and tried to convince him to cancel the wedding.
"I'm not canceling anything Xavier. Besides the fact that just like you she is an incredible psychic pariah, Y/n is the right omega for you and I guarantee you she is the only one who can give you everything you desire. Give the girl a chance, I know she's trying hard." - Xavier finds Ajax in the courtyard and Ajax looks extremely relieved to find him.
"Xavier where the hell have you been?!?"
"Ajax, do you know what Y/n's psychic power is?"
Ajax stops for a second to think surprised by the sudden question, Xavier never wanted to know anything about Y/n before.
"I think Enid told me about it once, she can see the color of people's souls and know who and how we are by that color, it basically allows her to read us like an open book or something like that"
Faced with Xavier's silence Ajax concludes that it would be best to take his friend to his room so that he doesn't do anything else stupid. The whole way Xavier remained in complete silence not being able to stop thinking about how her power influenced this whole situation.
She could see who he was even behind the cold and indifferent facade he used with her. Y/n knew who he was and yet she was able to love him?   Could his father have foreseen this?
-
She truly loved him as he had always wanted to be loved and yet he treated her so poorly. She was there ready to hand him everything he ever wanted on a platter and he was such an idiot as to almost bond forever with someone he knew he didn't truly love and who didn't love him. Gods he certainly was the reincarnation of stupidity.
Luckily for him Doctor Kinbott was available for a last minute session.
-
Xavier takes a deep breath as he gets into Kinbott's car and faced with her expectant gaze he decides to begin.
"It's about Y/n"
"You finally want to talk about her?"
"Yes I do...she said she loves me and I know it's true"
"How do you know it's true?"
Xavier frowns at the strange question.
"Her scent changes when she lies"
Kinbott looks surprised at his statement.
"Can you tell if she is lying or not by her smell?"
Xavier nods and Kinbott thinks for a second before continuing.
"Do you know since when you can do it?"
He bites his lip, he remembered exactly the first time he noticed she was lying.
"The group was talking about parents weekend and when Enid asked her if her parents were coming she said she didn't know yet but I could tell it was a lie by the way her scent changed, her parents are just as busy as mine, they don't have time to come to a school event."
"Is there anything else about her that you can tell by her smell?"
"I think I can also tell when she is anxious or nervous in addition to happy or sad."
"Xavier have you ever been able to identify if someone was lying before by smell? Like with Bianca or Wednesday or really anyone?"
The alpha's mind goes blank, trying to remember actually he had never been able to do that with anyone before Y/n and even now he couldn't tell it on anyone else if not her. Taking his silence as a no Kinbott continues.
"Normally a person would only be able to identify when someone is happy or sad by smell and even that would be hard to notice if the person tried to hide it. Xavier the fact that you can tell even when she is lying means that even if you didn't realize it you have had extraordinary attention on her. I think you should try to understand why you give her all that attention."
Hesitating Xavier closes his eyes and takes a deep breath trying to remember what was going on inside him whenever he was near her.
When he met her he remembers really liking the way she smelled, he felt like leaning closer to feel her better and remembers thinking how cute she was.
When he went to her to tell her that his break up with Bianca was not because of her but he found her quite sleepy and still in her pajamas. He couldn't help but notice her nest in the corner of the room, it looked so comfortable and the thought of lying in it just relaxing seemed tempting. Maybe that's why he was so hard on her about how he wouldn't give her a chance.
And when she started getting closer to him? While painting, running and even at the archery club she started to be there. How he himself noticed a difference in his painting when she was there. How she never returned the sweater he lent her when it started to rain while they were running. He himself didn't touch it, he told himself he did so because he didn't want them to know he had lent her the garment but now he could see that he just expected her to put it in that comfortable nest. How he lingered and enjoyed it a little more than he should have when he helped her with the bow and arrow or how he let a small smile escape when the omega was happy to have hit the target for the first time.
Now that he thinks about it the time when she started to join him more to ward off Wednesday probably coincided with the time when she started to suspect that he would be the monster. Before that Y/n had never forced any closeness between them always respecting his decision, maybe she just wanted Wednesday to leave him alone.
When the Rave'N started to get closer and he had to get all those alphas away from her without her noticing but there was one smartass who invited her anyway and he had to intervene by deliberately interrupting to ask Y/n if she was going to lunch with the group taking her with him when she said yes. He smiled internally when the other alpha cringed as he saw he had been caught, oh how he masked all the jealousy and told himself he had only defended himself from the affront as the whole school knew they were engaged and yet another alpha dared to invite her. How he pretended not to feel relief when she turned around and said she appreciated the invitation but couldn't go with him.
Even when she asked him to the dance and he rejected her he remembers feeling something inside him scold him.
During the dance when near the end he finally noticed her on the dance floor and was mesmerized, especially with the way her neck and lips looked so soft, for a second he let himself think about what it would be like to kiss them but soon pushed the thought away.
At the end of the dance when he found her alone and took her in his arms but felt reluctant to put her down.
That night when he slept so soundly and then noticed her scent on the bed, he tried to deny it but now realized that it had been her scent calming him, making him feel safe.
All the times he had repressed himself from tucking that loose lock of her hair behind his ear. Repressed himself from smiling and kissing her forehead whenever she offered him a hair elastic because he was going to dye and had forgotten his. Or even when he suppressed himself whenever he noticed too much how beautifully her eyes sparkled.
Looking at it now it seemed so obvious, he had spent so much time running from this, trying not to feel it. So long pretending not to love the one who loves him.
With a silly but still slightly incredulous smile Xavier asks aloud "Do I love her?" Kinbott smiles "I think that's you who knows the answer"
-
Xavier was currently walking toward his shed, after all he had done he could not simply apologize. He had to think of something special.
His cell phone rings bringing him out of his thoughts and surprising him to see that it was his father.
"Xavier, I'll try to talk calmly but would you mind explaining to me why the hell I got a call from Y/n's mom telling me that you decided to schedule a delta?!"
"I didn't mark her"
"I know! Apparently you decided to wait for her heat to be more romantic!"
"What? No!!! I was high, I made a mistake, I almost marked Bianca and I hate to admit it but you were right, Y/n is the right omega for me so you don't have to worry I swear I will fix this"
"I won't even comment on the part about you being drugged but I really hope you work it out, luckily her mother came to talk to me first but if things aren't cleared up she will talk to her husband and you can kiss the right omega goodbye for you."
Xavier swallows dryly, now that he finally realized how he felt he was not willing to lose her "I will I promise."
"Good" and with that his father hangs up.
-
Xavier couldn't believe this was happening, the universe was surely punishing him for everything he did. He just wanted to go to Y/n, hug her and tell her how he felt but Wednesday showed up, brought the police and now he was under arrest.
-
He made a mistake in refusing Wednesday's help when she wanted to get him out of there, if only he had read Yoko's letter first...
"I know that Y/n has never been of the slightest interest to you but I thought you should know what's going on. Bianca was in our room, I saw her leave when I arrived and Y/n was very upset by what she said to you. Apparently you were with Bianca and you both decided that you would schedule her in her next heat to make it special. About an hour after this happened she went into heat it is normal for short lived ones to not know it so the nurse says it is no big deal but I am a vampire and have seen this happen. She went into heat due to extreme stress, she loves you, she can't imagine losing you and when Bianca said that it triggered this. In the old days it was more common but nowadays it is rare that anyone still has this natural defense. This heat is much stronger than any she has had before, it is pure pain accompanied by extremely high fevers because its sole purpose is to make sure she doesn't lose the alpha she so desperately wants. I am writing this because she may die. Unless you mark her the heat won't stop and I don't know how long she can hold out."
Xavier's heart squeezes, he had put his omega under so much stress and fear of losing him that he triggered a rut that could kill her.  She could die because of him. He kept his breathing calm but could feel himself on the verge of a panic attack. He had thought that eventually the murders would continue, they would realize it wasn't him and he could go back to Y/n and work things out but now he doesn't have time. She needs him.
At that moment Sheriff Galpin enters the room signaling that it was time to go. The sudden entrance took him away from his thoughts but soon everything doubled back as he realized that soon there would be nothing he could do.
-
After being released by Thing Xavier ran as fast as he could towards the school, if what Wednesday had said was happening he had to get Y/n out of there.
-
After realizing that he couldn't defeat Crackstone Xavier had decided to sneak out to try to get to Y/n but Bianca caught him and forced him out to the others with her siren song.
-
Fortunately all ended well but the nurse refused to let Xavier see Y/n even after he argued that he was her fiancé. To his enormous luck his friends decided to wait another day before going home to help him.
While waiting for nightfall so they could start their plan he decided to go talk to Bianca to find out exactly what she had said to his omega.
-
Xavier almost doesn't knock before entering the delta dormitory who welcomes him with a huge smile.
"Xav-"
"What did you tell him?"
Xavier tries to keep control.
"What?"
"What did you say to my omega?"
"Your ome-"
"Y/n is in the infirmary in a rut triggered by extreme stress, I know you talked to her. Exactly what did you tell her?"
Xavier finally raises his eyes to look at delta and she swallows dryly. She had never seen the alpha like this before and it was enough to look at him now to know that if she lied and was discovered he would surely torture her in ways even worse than Wednesday could imagine.
"I told her that you came to my dorm to claim me, I omitted the part about you being drugged and changed the part where you ran away to have decided that we would wait for my heat because you wanted to mark me in a more romantic way."
Nothing he didn't already know but still he has to crouch on the floor and bring his hands to his face to try to calm himself down. Once again it was all his own foolishness' fault but he has to admit that Bianca has stepped up.
"She might die"
Xavier says as he leaves the dormitory slamming the door hard.
-
The plan was this, Enid offered to take care of Y/n while the nurse was away for the weekend. So they would move her nest to Xavier's room and later in the evening take her there as well with the goal that the smell might help her calm down. Fortunately all the rooms were equipped to block the smells from the inside to the outside because of the routines and heat.
Xavier was nervous but Yoko explained that everything would be fine, that heat was only meant to get her marked and would disappear quickly after that happened. Besides since the heat was specifically intended for him his reaction would be completely different from other alphas who might be tempted to mate with her by smell.
The hardest part was transporting Y/n from the infirmary to Xavier's room, to do this they wrapped several towels covered in Xavier's scent to muffle the omega's scent and had Ajax and other alphas of the Nightshades pour large amounts of her scent all over the hallway they would be walking before and after Y/n passed through to erase her traces.
To the alpha's distress he was to wait in the dormitory. It seemed like hours but when he finally opened the door and saw Y/n he could feel a great stream of tears run down his face. In a second he snatched her out of Yoko's arms whispering a "thank you" and closing the door.
He goes to her bed where he sits hugging the omega tighter against his chest. She doesn't even open her eyes emitting only small moans of pain, regret and guilt paint the young artist, he didn't deserve her and yet he was the only one who could save her. How ironic could life be?
Yoko was right, he felt no need but to claim and protect her. Taking a deep breath he tries to calm his heartbeat as he begins to lick the spot where he would bite her. He wishes he had realized it sooner and could mark her in other conditions.
A small purr begins to flow from the omega and more tears flow from Xavier's eyes, even practically unconscious her body was still reacting to his presence. With one arm wrapped around his waist and one hand gently holding his head he takes a deep breath before gritting his teeth.
He could taste blood as his teeth finally penetrate the omega's soft skin. It seems at the same time something inside him changes, a connection, a conection, he can immediately feel the bond that binds him to Y/n. It was incredible. As he licked the mark to stop the bleeding and ease the pain he couldn't stop thinking about how he almost wasted something like that on someone who neither loved nor loved him.
When the bleeding finally stops he takes her to the nest where he lies down with her.
-
Y/n wakes up with a throbbing pain in his head and shoulder. The last things he remembered were the conversation with Bianca, sending some messages to his crying mother, talking to Yoko and shortly after feeling extremely hot and passing out...the conversation with Bianca...
"Xavier..."
"Hm?"
Xavier questions resuming licking and kissing the mark. Y/n's eyes widen and she blushes as she realizes that Xavier was lying right behind her with his chest pressed against her back and his arms wrapped around her waist as he kissed and licked her shoulder. She wasn't even in her room, but this was her nest...Why?
Y/n tries to turn to look at him but the glimpse of a mark makes her bring her hand to her shoulder to be sure. The alpha smiles as he kisses his hand over the mark before making his way to kiss her neck and whisper in her ear.
"I love you"
The omega widens her eyes in disbelief.
"I...I died?"
Xavier lets out a small sad laugh.
"Fair enough I guess. I'm sorry it took me so long to figure it out. I was so wrapped up in anger at my father that the only time he talks to me is to decide who my mate would be that I was locking in my own feelings and couldn't even see that before you told me how you felt. I'm ashamed to say it but I'm not sure I would have understood it if you didn't say it."
The omega smiles before turning to hug him purringly. The alpha smiles and returns the hug before continuing.
"I actually went to Bianca."
"I know, your scent was on her."
He swallows dryly pulling her closer to him.
"Still no excuse but I was drugged and I never suggested anything of claiming her in a romantic way, in fact I ran away when she said she loved me and I could see how fake it sounded compared to when you said it to me."
Y/n laughs "I love you."
Xavier smiles "I know and I love you too but you haven't claimed me back yet"
"Do you want me to mark you?" she asks uncertainly.
Although it was much more common these days she could still count on her fingers the alphas claimed by omegas she has seen.
"Sure, I don't want someone coming on to me when I have a mate and fiancée" He says tilting his head to the side and exposing his neck to his mate.
Y/n smiles trying to swallow all the pride he feels as he digs his teeth into Xavier's bonding site, at that moment they can both feel that bond getting much stronger making them both gasp.
Xavier didn't know how he had gotten so lucky but he was going to make sure he was an alpha that deserves the omega he has and make up for all the pain it caused him. Starting with a real marriage proposal like she deserves, luckily for him, as usual neither of them would be going home this vacation.

Thanks for the tag @you-remind-me-of-the-babe! I am also sitting in a cafe just writing, watching the rain, and tackling my own challenging time elements. If I can give any words of encouragement, it is that it is so hard but also so worth it once you get it right!
I am now eleven chapters deep into The Eternal Life of Baz Pitch, which was going to be 14 chapters but is now looking more like 15. Who could have guessed it would take more than one chapter to successfully execute a slow burn? (ha!)
Again, can't reveal too much of what I've been working on, but here is a snippet I wrote this week from much later in the fic that could honestly make sense in just about any SnowBaz fic.
“I know all about that kind of hurt.” Baz brings his hands to rest on top of Simon’s and squeezes. “When you love someone so much you can’t breathe. When losing them feels like having your heart ripped out of your ribcage.” “It’s death.”  “It’s not.” Baz squeezes harder. “Not having someone to love at all is so much worse.”
Happy (rainy) Wednesday, all!
Hellos and high-fives below the cut.

okay, okay... just hear me out (i’m not going to write this, so i’m leaving it here for whoever that will)
college wenclair, be that college nevermore or whatever, and be they roommates or not, know each other or not, already dating or not
whatever, you do you, play with it as you seem fit
the important thing here is... night owl wednesday who likes to write/study well into the night (she’s a 3am kinda of gal) and enid (who is honestly hyped any hour, werewolves have too much energy™) who’s stuck commanding the college’s radio into the am hours (was the only time left, or she’s doing a favor idk)
wednesday only tunes in when enid is the one there, but not because she particularly likes her song choices, no, she keeps calling the radio to (banter) criticize enid
and enid is offended at first (or she just acts like it) but then tries to find the perfect song that will (flabbergast, impress, enamor) shut wednesday up
and because all of this happens so late, most students don't even listen to it, but then someone (probably yoko) hears a bit of it and tells everyone that they have to tune in and now most of the college is deeply invested in the radio girl and the grumpy caller verbal spars
some bet their grades that they're dating already or about to get together, some think this is insane, they're obviously about to stab each other
anyway, please someone write this, more than one person can write their take of it, i wanna see it all

Bloodied petals - Xavier Thorpe x reader | Part.1
Summary: The Hanahaki disease, when flowers start to grow in the lungs of people experiencing unrequited or one-sided love. You never thought Xavier would be the reason you'd start to cough petals.
Warnings: angst, mention of blood
A/N: okay this is the first time ever writing on the show Wednesday and on Xavier so this is definitely not proof-read but I'm weak for the sad artistic blorbo blblbl

Through blurry eyes you could barely recognize where you were. Sure, the stone arches looked vaguely familiar and maybe the floor you were laying on was too. But right now, everything felt so far away, not the rough surface of the stone floor under your palms, the smell of burning fire in through your nostrils nor the panicked screams seemed able to reach you. The only thing you could feel was the plaguing weight inside of your chest, crushing your lungs under its unforgiving pressure.
You coughed, mouth filled with blood and stained petals. At every cough it felt like your throat and chest were lit on fire and tears escaped the corner of your eyes. This pain should be familiar by now, it has grown stronger for weeks. Still, it hurt like a bitch and now the pain had numbed everything else.
In the distance, green lightning and clashes of steel were the last of your worries. Even if you tried, you couldn’t care less about all of this because your whole body just hurt so much. Someone shouted, closer this time. God, when would this excruciating feeling of your heart and lungs being squeezed to death ever stop? Something dropped beside you. Or was it someone? You tried to say something, at least to say you were still alive. Nothing but gurgled sounds came out of you; words were stuck with the blood and flowers that had been growing inside of your chest and crawling out of your throat for the past weeks.
Someone ripped your jacket open and pressed something on your plexus. Once, twice, a third time and on, repeatedly. Trying to force some of those flowers out to get you some air. They called you. Another hand cradled your cheek and a face came into your blurred vision. Even on the verge of death you could recognize those hazel hair and brown eyes anywhere. The pathetic attempt at calling out Xavier’s name only came out as a weak wheeze, as more blood dripped from your mouth.
As the crushing feeling in your chest grew even heavier, at a point where your own body couldn’t take it anymore, you felt yourself slip away. When your vision went black, you wondered how things could have turned differently.

2 MONTHS EARLIER
It happened for the first time during fencing class.
All the students had stopped their practice to stare at the intense sparring between Bianca and the new student cladded in black. Mask tucked under your arm, you didn’t miss a second of their pride-filled match.
“Never thought I'd see Bianca having her ass kicked in fencing” you whispered.
Next to you, Xavier let out a chuckle.
“You did beat her several times last year if I reckon”
That made you snort, “Yeah, like I said, I never saw someone do it, I was too busy actually succeeding at it.”
To be honest, it was a tight match between you and Bianca on who was the best in the fencing team. But you had backed down when she and Xavier had started dating ; you didn’t want his new girlfriend to hate your guts more than she already could. Being Xavier’s childhood friend had made things awkward in the beginning of their relationship. You couldn’t say she was really fond of you now, but at least you were civil to each other.
Bianca’s opponent executed a pirouette to dodge the siren’s attack and you let out a low whistle.
“Woah, guess Wednesday does know her shit,” you said in admiration.
Xavier’s head snapped to you, eyes wide. “You know her?”
“New roommate apparently,” you casually answered. At his lack of response you glanced at him, only to catch him mesmerized by the fencing match. Or rather, by your new gothic roomie. That made you frown slightly. Not even when he was with Bianca did you ever see Xavier with such a look of adoration. “Why?”
He didn’t answer immediately, too focused on the match. Like he hadn’t heard you. You nudged his arm slightly, making him realize that you had asked him something.
“I think I know her from before,” he muttered.
He had answered you. But he had not granted you a single glance. You had known him for so very long, you shouldn’t have been bothered by that. After all, he was free to do whatever he wanted. But his strange fascination for this new student felt strange to you for some reason. Something in your chest didn’t feel right, like a starting cough. Feeling your throat starting to tingle, you sneezed once, twice, covering your nose for decency. Something soft landed on your hand as you sneezed but before you had time to see what it was a collective gasp made your head snap up. Wednesday kneeled on the floor, a clean cut painting her pale cheek in red. That made you gasp, too. She just lost.
Before Bianca could loathe anymore, the brunette gathered herself and hurriedly left the room, stiff as ever. You stepped aside like the other students to let her through. She was probably going to the infirmary to get her cheek checked.
“Well, that was weird,” you said with a dry chuckle. Then you turned toward your friend, “Are you down for another match, Xav?”
He didn’t answer you again. His eyes were still glued to where Wednesday had disappeared a few moments ago. It wasn’t intentional probably, but the negligence of your childhood friend made your chest ache.
“Xavier?” you called him.
“I- uh sorry Y/N, I gotta go”, he mumbled pensively before excusing himself out of the room.
Dumbfounded by his sudden departure, you looked at Ajax.
“What’s gotten him?” you asked him.
The gorgon only shrugged, “Dunno. It’s not the first time he had acted strange, eh?”
You nodded, he had made a point. You had known Xavier for a long time and knew him pretty well, but this time you couldn’t understand his behavior.
“Wanna do another match?”
“Thanks Ajax,” you said with a small smile, “but I think I’m gonna hit the sho-”
A fit of cough interrupted you, your chest burning with an itching sensation. It felt like something was stuck in your throat, and the coughs intensified until it disappeared only a few moments later. When the itching stopped, you looked at the gorgon apologetically.
“I think this is the sign for me to call it a day,” you joked. “Too bad, you could have actually beat me in this state.”
He snorted and nudged you playfully to the exit of the room, telling you he would have totally beat you anyway. As soon as you came out of the room, you opened your clenched hand. At the sight of five white flower petals, you frowned.
“What the fuck,” you muttered to yourself.
Your day had just become a lot weirder than you thought.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, by the time you had stepped out of the shower the sneezes and other weird petals-coughing had stopped. So you had brushed away the thought, thinking it might be related to your late gardening the previous night. You had spent half of the night tending to your collection of plants and had almost fallen asleep on the workbench.
Returning to your room, you were met by the sight of your roommates, Enid and Wednesday in what appeared to be a glaring contest in the middle of the room.
“Already at each other’s throats?” you asked, making Enid humph and plopping on her bed with a pout.
The brunette eyed you meticulously, like she was analyzing every detail about you.
“It’s nice to meet you officially Wednesday,” you said with a small nod of your head. For what you had heard from Enid, she wasn’t the type to enjoy any unnecessary physical contact.
“You must be Y/N” she observed sharply, “Principal Weems had mentioned that I was to be plagued with two roommates.”
You nodded, not taking the icy comment personally. “I am. Though I’m very mindful of everyone’s personal space considering that I also cherish mine.”
“Perfect” said Wednesday sharply. “I also understood you were quite a fitting fencing partner.”
“You did?” you asked with an arched eyebrow.
“Xavier mentioned it,” she said.
“You talked with Xavier?” you asked with a surprised frown.
The way her eyes narrowed at every one of your reactions wasn’t missed.
“He talked at the infirmary. Just helped me to get out of a murder attempt.”
“A what now?” you asked with a dry chuckle.
“A WHAT??” Enid screamed.
Wednesday rolled her eyes at your blond roommate’s reaction. With a flick of your wrist and a simple mumbled incantation, the torrent of question the werewolf had started to ramble turned into silence. Enid gave you an outraged face at your actions, throwing silent threats at you before returning to her bed and pout. The ever so slight twitch of Wednesday’s eyebrow showed that you might actually have impressed her.
“Witch” you said simply, pointing at yourself. “Silencing spells comes out handy here.”
“Quite impressive,” said Wednesday in her usual flat tone. “Thorpe had failed to mention your actual useful assets.”
The thought that he hadn’t talked about your powers wasn’t odd. The both of you had basically grown up together when your aunt had started to drop you frequently at his dad’s house when you were kids. Your aunt was quite popular in the witch community and was good friends with Xavier’s equally famous father. When you ended up in her care after your mom’s passing, you gained a new friend in Xavier. By now he was used to your powers; it felt normal to him.
“Well if you ever need a fencing partner, you know where to find me”
She tsked, sharply returning to her chair to sit in front of her typewriter, “Although I’m not sure to step in the fencing room ever again, it is a reassuring thought to have someone able to actually stab efficiently in the same room as I.”
You chuckled at her words, “My pleasure.”
Seeing that she wasn’t listening anymore to dedicate her time to writing, you plopped down on your bed, opening one of your history books to go through the last lesson. Everyone at Nevermore knew you were kind of a hardcore student, often spending free time practicing your abilities or studying. Even if your aunt hadn’t been the most present parent, she had always made sure you had the best tutors to teach you witchcraft. In the early years you had been under her care, you had been quick to understand that excellent grades and results were what made you worthy in her eyes; not that you thought less of her – witches were prideful beings and big on family glory. Now you weren’t trying to get her attention through scholarship anymore, but good habits of studying stayed.
So it wasn’t unusual for you to get a text from Xavier asking if you could help him with some assignment, like he just did.
Glancing from your book, you noticed that Wednesday was still on her writing hour, while Enid had left the room. You got up, grabbed your bag to throw a few personal effects and slipped out of your room. Girls and boys weren’t supposed to sneak into each other’s dormitories, but you knew how to go past the surveillance easily. Knocking on Xavier’s door, you waited for someone to answer. When he opened the door, Xavier had his usual lopsided grin.
“Hey”
“Hi there,” you smiled back, before entering the room, noticing the absence of his roommate, “Rowan’s not here?”
Immediately, Xavier’s eyes became colder and he seemed to tense.
“Nah. Don’t think he’ll be coming back tonight to be honest.”
You arched an eyebrow, while sitting cross-legged on Xavier’s bed, “Why?”
He licked his lips nervously, like he pondered whether or not he should tell you this. But after all, you were his oldest friend, and he trusted you with his life.
“He tried to kill Wednesday earlier.”
That made your eyes widen; not really the attempted murder part, more the fact than Rowan did it.
“Rowan?” you repeated. “As in, Rowan your roommate?”
He frowned, “You don’t seem very surprised that someone tried to kill Wednesday.”
You felt your chest tighten once again at his concerned tone. Like you wanted to start to cough again.
“She told me,” you explained, “though she doesn’t know who had tried to kill her.”
“Fuck,” he swore, passing a nervous hand through his hair, “I don’t know why he had done this.”
The way he looked so distressed made bile rise in your throat. You stopped the cough before it ever came out of your mouth.
“Look, we can’t know until Rowan’s back, okay?” you said calmly, trying to ease the tension, “Wednesday’s okay, I’m even pretty sure she’s honored that someone came this close to kill her on her first week here.”
That elicited a laugh from Xavier, and at this sound you felt lighter.
“Yeah, that’s probably right,” he chuckled before sitting down on the bed next to you. “I guess we’ll see where all of this goes, uh? Maybe it was all a misunderstanding.”
You hummed in agreement, “Besides, Wednesday knows how to defend herself, and I’m not going to let my roommate alone in the face of danger, no matter how much she pulls the cool detached girl behavior.”
He smiled at that. Despite the weird character of Wednesday, you didn’t wish her any harm. Should she be in danger, sure you’d help her.
Grabbing one book from your back, you gently swat it on Xavier’s shoulder.
“Don’t try to change the subject though mister,” you playfully reminded him, “I do believe you texted me to save your sorry artistic ass once again.”
He dodged your next attack, laughing as you tried to hit him again with your notebook.
“Yes ma’am” he smirked, grabbing his own notes.
The two of you started to work, leaving the subject of your new roommate behind. An hour into this comfortable studying session, where you helped Xavier for a botany assignment and he showed you some of his recent sketches, it felt like it had always been. You were comfortable around each other, everything seemed to come out effortlessly. That’s why you loved to spend time with Xavier so much.
You stretched your arms above your head, releasing all the tension that had built up due to your slouched position while studying.
“I’ll never understand how you always ace the arithmetic classes, Xav” you said with an amused smile.
“That might be my hard work,” he mused with a grin, letting himself fall on his back onto the mattress.
You snorted and threw a ball of paper on him, “You’re like the laziest student ever, Thorpe.”
He caught it effortlessly, “Must be my natural talent then,” he said before throwing it back at you, hitting you on the head.
“Oh you’re gonna pay for that,” you grinned, jumping on his side.
He jumped at your sudden move but before he could protest you were already tickling him mercilessly. “Hey! This isn’t fair!” he wheezed in between laughs.
He tried to counter your attacks, jabbing your sides and the two of you ended up rolling on his bed, giggling like children tickling each other restlessly. At some point Xavier managed to flip you over and you squealed at the sudden turn of events. You started preparing for a witty come back but the words were caught in your throat at the sight of Xavier’s face merely inches from yours. Hovering above you, he got you pinned on his bed; your breaths, ragged and mixing together softly caressing each other’s cheeks. For the briefest moment, it seemed like you saw his eyes for the first time. Brown, warm and bottomless; they looked like home to you. They had golden highlights too, how come you had never noticed?
While you were gazing at Xavier’s face, you hadn’t noticed him kissing every inch of your face with the very same eyes you were lost in. Before you could stop yourself your gaze flickered to his lips briefly then to his eyes again, only to find his gaze already on yours.
“Hi,” he whispered.
“Hey,” you breathed back.
“Willing to recognize my undeniable charm now?” he asked huskily with his usual grin.
You huffed softly at that, “I thought you talked about natural talent.”
“Well there’s that too, thanks for reminding me Y/N” he casually grinned. His expression then softened, “I’m trying to reach your level, sweetheart.”
Your already short breath got caught in your throat. It wasn’t the first time you heard him using affectionate pet names, but you couldn’t help but feel your cheeks shade in soft pink. This time felt…different. Maybe because you were laying on Xavier’s bed, with half of his body pressed against yours, complimenting you.
Somehow, the weight on your chest felt like it had almost disappeared.
Your eyes wandered once again on his full pink lips without really realizing it.
“Xav?” you whispered, not wanting to speak louder, like you were afraid it would ruin the moment.
“Yeah?”
Suddenly, you felt shy. You had never felt embarrassed about talking about anything with Xavier. So why did it feel so strange now? Licking your lips nervously you averted your eyes, unsure of what to do.
“Do you think…do you think about us, sometimes?”
At his lack of response you sighed quietly and kept your gaze down. God you felt embarrassed now.
“Sorry,” you mumbled, “this was a stupid question I shouldn’t have asked that.”
Noticing your discomfort, Xavier brought his hand to your face slowly.
“Hey,” he said, carefully brushing a strand of hair off your face, “hey it’s okay. No hiding between us, remember?”
You could only shrug slightly, unsure of what to say.
To be honest, you weren’t sure why you were asking this now. Of course, you had wondered if you and Xavier would someday be more than friends. It even seems that the thought had never really left, it was simply buried more or less deep in your mind. And somehow, it was resurfacing now.
“I have thought about it,” he confessed, “a lot, actually.” That made your heart flutter. Until he add, “But this…I can’t–”
A strong sound of chords, although muffled by the walls, made him stop. Without really realizing it, your head turned toward the window too. It sounded like someone was playing on a balcony?
This unexpected interruption seemed to break the strange yet intimate charm the two of you were caught in, and Xavier slowly pushed himself away from you, clearing his throat awkwardly. Yours on the other hand, felt tighter than ever. Still you got up from the bed, and just like Xavier, approached the window, curious about this melody resonating throughout Nevermore’s walls.
“It sounds like a cello,” mumbled Xavier, looking through the window to try to catch a glimpse of the mysterious player.
“Nobody has a cello in the school,” you started to think out loud as an image of your new roommate’s belongings flashed into your mind, “except…”
Your eyes flickered immediately to your room’s balcony, on the other side of the quad. Sitting under the night sky and deep in concentration, Wednesday Addams was playing cello like it was the last time she’d ever play. Passionate, dark, precise. An impressive presence that weightened down every other.
You didn’t know how long you had stayed in front of the window, mesmerized by the intensity of the music recital. When you got out of your reverie, your head snapped in Xavier’s direction. Really, you didn’t really know what to expect, it had been more a reflex than anything else. But finding him hovering over a sheet of paper, erratically sketching like a madman, wasn’t what you expected at all.
Sensing your burning gaze on his back Xavier lifted his head; at the betrayed look on your face, his eyes turned into pleading ones.
“I– I’m sorry I just–”
“No it’s me,” you cut him sharply in a small voice. Crossing the room to gather your belongings you hurriedly threw all of your stuff in your bag. Not daring looking up at Xavier; or else you weren’t sure you would be able to restrain your tears. “I overstepped, I should be going.”
“Y/N I–” Xavier pleaded.
“G’night Xavier,” you mumbled, storming out of the room and shutting the door behind you.
Eyes glued on the floor for the entire walk, you crossed the empty hallways in a hurry. At a turn, the gruesome feeling in your chest returned. Like a hot iron gripping on your lungs, a sharp pain started to overtake you. The harsh, tingling sensation clawed at your throat, acid plaguing your chest and lungs. As the first cough escaped your mouth, you leaned on the wall for support, hand covering your mouth. The horrid sensation of the never ending dry cough, shaking your whole body like a trembling leaf was crippling you. You weren’t even able to take another step, as the sensation of something crawling out of your chest through your throat was intensifying every passing second.
The coughs hardened, until at last your stomach managed to regurgitate something. Bending over as you felt you were beginning to throw up, your hand came in front of you out of reflex to grab whatever you were spitting. With an awful gurgling sound, you finally spat out something soft, covered with a sticky substance. More smaller bits escaped your mouth for a whole solid minute, your mouth still feeling soggy but the coughs gradually easing down anyway.
Bringing your trembling hands up, you opened them tentatively to see what had been stuck in your throat for so long. On your palm lay a white flower and scattered petals, covered with saliva and blood. Wiping the wet string dripping from your mouth with quivering fingers, you held them up in the moonlight. They were red and wet, covered in blood too.
Crumbling against the wall, you let yourself fall on the ground. For long minutes, you stared at the bloody flowers in your hand. Then, you bursted into tears.
“What the fuck,” you sobbed in disbelief.
You had no idea of what was going on; but this was far more concerning than you had originally thought.

This is It
RenGiyuu, 1.1K
TW: mcd, attempted suicide, depressing thoughts, blood
Tumblr media
Giyuu opened his eyes. It was midnight, a time he knew too well. He was laying on a roof somewhere he couldn’t recognize. He wasn’t alone. Kyojuro was sitting on the roof with him. He looked over at Giyuu with a soft voice, “Hey, good morning. How do you feel?”
Giyuu sat up slowly, “Where are we?”
“Not far,” Kyojuro answered, waving his hand in some direction. He looked at the lights of the small city ahead of them. “You didn’t answer my question, Giyuu.”
Giyuu hummed as a response. If he was to be honest, he felt awful. His head was groggy and he felt tired despite the nap. He shook his head, “I’m alright.”
Kyojuro looked over. His smile was brought down by the sadness in his eyes. “Okay,” he muttered, and Giyuu realized that he was caught in his lie. Neither of them elaborated further.
Kyojuro changed the subject, “I’m glad you’re awake, either way. I was worried that you might not wake up.”
Giyuu met his eyes, trying to see why Kyojuro would be worried about that. He looked over himself, missing the signs of blood or broken bones. Nothing. He was perfectly fine physically. He looked back at Kyojuro again, “What happened?”
“You don’t remember?” Kyojuro looked back at the lights, “Maybe it’s for the best. I’d rather you not remember.”
Giyuu didn’t understand why.
Kyojuro sighed and slid closer to Giyuu, “Can I ask a personal question?”
Giyuu nodded.
Kyojuro looked into the dark blue eyes of his lover, “What’s one thing that you’ve wanted the most in life?”
Giyuu gulped. There was no easy answer. There were so many things he wanted throughout his life. Acceptance, love, care, understanding, compassion, better speaking skills, friends, someone to talk to; all easy examples. Somehow, Kyojuro gave him all of those. He shrugged. “You?”
Kyojuro smiled and chuckled, “You flatter, but I appreciate it. I know it’s not true, however.” Kyojuro looked away, avoiding Giyuu’s concerned gaze. He continued, “You want him back, don’t you?”
Giyuu tried to see who he was talking about. They were the only two on the roof above the dead street. Despite the bright lights that made Tokyo look like daylight, the walkways were barren of any passerbys.
Kyojuro glanced at Giyuu’s hand, “You’re holding him now.”
Giyuu looked at his hand. It held onto Sabito’s side of the haori tightly. He let go. Kyojuro commented, “You miss him. Do you want him back?”
Giyuu nodded while he stared at his blood-stained hand, “Of course.”
Kyojuro put his soft hand against Giyuu’s cheek to guide his avoiding gaze to those burning embers of eyes.
“More than me?”
Giyuu froze. What kind of question was this? It felt like a trick. It felt unfair. Kyojuro was making him choose? Why? It was impossible. He loves Sabito and Kyojuro. They helped him through everything. Giyuu would be no one without them. He couldn’t choose, he couldn’t choose.
Kyojuro hummed. He was disappointed, but he couldn't understand it like Giyuu could. “Why do you keep it?” Kyojuro put his hand on Giyuu’s green and yellow shoulder.
“I don’t know.”
“You do,” Kyojuro squeezed, “You don’t have a grave to mourn at, do you?”
Giyuu didn’t know how Kyojuro knew that. “I don’t.”
“What if you did? Would you stop wearing it?”
“I don’t know.”
“You can mourn at my grave. Will you wear mine?”
“I don’t know.”
Kyojuro sighed again, knowing that he wouldn’t get another answer.
Giyuu held his breath, “I’ll miss you.”
Kyojuro looked at him, “Hm?”
Giyuu avoided his eyes, “If you die.”
Kyojuro glowed like an angel, “When I die, you mean. Death is guaranteed, Giyuu, and I miss you too.”
Giyuu felt tears stab at his eyes, “Will you wait for me?”
Kyojuro smiled out of the corner of Giyuu’s blurry vision, “There is no waiting, Giyuu. This is it.”
Giyuu looked up at him for the last time. Kyojuro’s smile was beautiful, open, and accepting.
It was his whole world.
It was over.
Giyuu blinked.
It wasn’t midnight anymore. He opened his eyes to somewhere different. The first thing he saw was the white that distorted his vision. He blinked away the tears and stared at the white snow on the ground. The ground was cold. Everything was so cold that it was warm.
Something touched him. He shook at the force, but couldn’t move at all.
“Oh, thank- Over here! He’s alive!” a feminine voice called out through his clogged ears. He was touched more. The snow was brushed off him and he was rolled on his back.
Shinobu’s face was in view. For once, she looked concerned. “Tomioka-san! Can you hear me?” She didn’t wait for an answer. She worked on his stomach, doing something just out of his vision.
His vision narrowed, and the darkness bit away at the vision of the white clouds. Shinobu talked about something medical. Something about blood, about cold, and about living. Was Giyuu dying? The pain in his stomach hardly compared to his blue fingertips or his toes.
Giyuu rolled onto his side at the push of burning hands, eventually falling back onto something that wasn’t cold and red. The snow beneath him was bloody. It was his blood. In the corner of his eye, he could see his bed clothes stained with blood. So much blood, so much blood, the amount that’s when something pierces the solar plexus and goes straight through it. Huh. Giyuu didn’t know where that thought came from.
Giyuu’s head was held to view the sky. He saw something else, though. His sword hilt. It was pointing to the sky, held by a dainty hand. The leather of the straps was stained red. Why was it above him? With much more effort than he anticipated, he lifted his head enough to see where the blade was.
It was covered in blood. Everything was covered in blood. It was in his stomach. Seppuku, his mind reminded him.
“Stay down!” Shinobu shouted, pressing her fingers against Giyuu’s forehead as if he wasn’t already falling back. His head lulled to the side when she let up but scolded him further.
Another color caught his attention aside from the bleeding red and the rippling blue. Silver and gray, he could barely make out the symbols carved into the stone.
Here Lies Rengoku Kyojuro
Proud Brother, Dedicated Son
The Greatest Flame Hashira
Oh.
He remembered what happened now.
It was his turn to save Kyojuro just as he saved him.
“You seem shy! That’s okay, my little brother is the same way! Tomioka-san, do you know anywhere close by where we could eat!”
Kyojuro saved him from loneliness. It was Giyuu’s time to return the favor.
I’m coming to save you.
I’ll save you, Kyojuro.
I’ll save myself.
I’ll save you.
I’ll save you.
