Fandom: The Finest Hours

Relationship: Bernie Webber x Reader (Gender Neutral)

Warnings: little bit of angst????

A/N: Yes, I’m aware that The Finest Hours is based on real people and real events...but come on! Chris’ portrayal of Bernie is just so flippin’ cute!!! I just - he’s just so precious!!! How could I not write at least one thing for him???? That being said, this fic is based on the actors in the movie more so than the people they are meant to represent. Does that make sense?

For the most part, it does cover the scene in the movie, but I did tweak how a few things happened.

Also, this is a Gender Neutral Reader! If you catch something that doesn’t make it gen neutral, please let me know so I can fix it! I plan to (at some point this week) edit all of my masterlists to specify what type of reader each fic features :)

Home

The headlights did little to penetrate the thick fog that blanketed the frigid water, yet you still held onto your hope that that was just from your perspective. That the lights could be seen from far out over the black water and were acting as the beacon they were meant to be.

You needed to keep that hope, because if you didn’t...

No.

You shook your head.

You couldn’t think that way.

A gust of winter air blew in from across the sea and you shifted, drawing your coat closer around your body before shoving your hands into the pockets. It’s been ten minutes since you’d left your car to stand before the edge of the dock. Ten minutes in which the chill had completely seeped through your clothes, freezing you to the bone.

Yet you couldn’t find it in yourself to care, because right now - a pang went through your heart and you bit your lip - right now your Bernie was out there, in the cold, black water trying to bring home survivors in a boat far too small for the job it was doing.

“Uh, yes, sir, thirty-two. Uh, sir we lost our compass so we don’t know where we are; we’re gonna try to make it back home.”

You could still hear his voice reporting to Cuff over the static filled radio...

“They can’t get back without a compass.”

“Not in this weather.”

The disbelieving whispers of the townsfolk around you...

They stood with you now, on either side, in silent solidarity far down along the water’s edge. Without looking, you knew they were just as focused on the hidden horizon as you were.

The thought was a comforting one; that with so many more pairs of eyes someone might see something that you could have missed. With each roll of the water, the surface glimmered under the honey-colored headlights, but beyond that the fog took over, obscuring the horizon from all on land.

Shifting, you took in a deep breath as another misleading reflection dashed your hopes once more. No. No. Your head dipped down and you squeezed your eyes shut in an effort to stop the sudden stinging.

“The powers out. The whole town...the powers out.”

“They'll never make it.”

No.

Not your Bernie.

With a shaky breath, you finally lifted your eyes to stare back out, straining to see beyond where the glimmers faded into nothingness and then...

Then you realized that there was a shine that wasn’t disappearing.

And it was far beyond the car light reflections.

Your breath hitched as hope began to swell inside your heart.

Time seemed to crawl as the small boat slowly made it's way closer to the pier. In your peripheral, you could see the townsfolk around you making their way over to greet the rescuers and survivors, but you couldn't move.

He did it.

He made it.

It wasn't until you felt an arm under your palm that you realized you'd begun moving on your own accord, pushing your way through the crowd and onto the pier. By the time you stopped in the center of the wooden structure, the boat was already getting tied up and the first of the survivors were getting pulled up and out.

One...four...nine...

You held your breath as each drenched man - each not Bernie - passed by you on their search for warmth and dryness and comfort. With each one, you felt your heart hammer faster and faster. Your blood thrummed with anticipation as the voices of townsfolk around you faded to an indecipherable buzz.

And then you noticed the crowd begin to drift away from and off of the pier.

In a heartbeat you were stepping up to the edge. With misty eyes and your hands shoved deep inside the pockets of your coat, you peered down into the boat. Affection bloomed fast and all-consuming throughout your body, thawing you from the inside out at the sight of the boat’s captain resting his forehead against the pane of glass.

“Bernie...” His name came out as a whisper, ghosting past your lips no louder than the water lapping against the boat and pier, but it was enough. Bernie lifted his head, blinking through the water that continued to drip down his face from his soaked hair, as a myriad of emotions flickered across his face.

Disbelief...

Relief...

Wonder...

Love...

The tears that had been threatening to fall for so long now finally broke past your control and you hastily stepped down into the boat. His watery blue eyes, the ones that had captivated you since the moment you first met, held your own in a heady gaze. In an instant, Bernie’s gloved hands grabbed your waist and you found yourself pulled flush against his damp body before being greeted with a desperate, toe-curling kiss.

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie!

His name became a mantra in your mind and your tears fell faster as you felt every ounce of love you poured into the kiss returned in kind. The thought of possibly never again having the chance to do this had you tightening your grip around his shoulders, deepening it even further.

Far sooner than you wanted, Bernie broke the kiss. He rested his forehead against yours, his breath coming out in hot gasps over your lips. When your eyes flickered open, your heart stuttered when you found him gazing fondly back at you. His hand came up to lightly brush against your jaw. “Let’s go home.”

Home... Home...

Home... Home was Bernie. Home was this gentle, blue eyed man with a heart far larger than anyone ever expected and far stronger than the ocean storms.

You couldn’t help the huffed laugh that escaped you. With a soft smile, you cradled his face in your hands and brushed a chaste kiss across his lips. Not trusting your voice, it was the only way to convey how you felt.

And it was enough.

You felt the smile in Bernie’s return caress before he helped you back up onto the pier and guided you away, your body pressed close to his side.

“We still good for April?” He murmured.

You smiled and rested your head against his shoulder.

Yes, home was Bernie and the promised future you were to share together.

Tay’s Holiday Celebration #1 Bernie Webber drabble

Fireside Cuddles

You watched the snow blow by in gusts from your position at the window, listening to the radio in the background talking about the blizzard currently blowing through Chatham. Your husband Bernie walked up behind you and put his hand on your waist, drawing your attention. “I know you told your boss you would come to work today, but the roads are covered and the snow is making it hard to see. You might not be able to leave if you go in.,” Bernie told you in his heavy Northern accent.

“I know, but I feel bad for leavin’ Mrs. O’Reilly and the girls high and dry,” you said of the call station where you work. You leaned back into Bernie’s chest and shivered at the cold wind coming on through the window pane, entranced by the patterns in the snow. Bernie felt your body shudder and pulled you closer to his body, rubbing your arms to try and warm you up.

“Why don’t I build up the fire and get you warm?”

“That sounds nice. I’ll go change out of my work dress while you do that.” You head to the bedroom you share with Bernie and put on your pajamas, noticing a knit sweater in your closet that you were gifted for Christmas. You had yet to wear it, and you were still cold, so you decided to put it on over your long sleeved top. Before going back to the den, you grab the matching sweater that was made for your husband.

As Bernie dons his sweater, you head to the kitchen and warm a pot of cream for hot chocolate. After you add the chocolate shavings and stir it in, the drinks are ready and you head back out to the living room.

While you were preoccupied in the other room, your loving husband arranged a cozy pile of blankets in front of the fireplace and built up the fire. You are so moved by the gesture that as soon as Bernie stands up from where he was kneeled on the floor poking the fire, you tackle him in a hug. Stumbling back a step, he wraps his arms around your middle to return the embrace.

“Thank you for doing this for me, Bernie. I am so glad you don’t have to be on watch today down at the shack,” you tell him.

“You’re welcome, YN. You sit there and I’ll put on some music.”

You pick up your hot cocoa from the coffee table and do as he asks, sitting in front of the fire with your legs under you while Bernie switches the radio from the weather station to play some tunes. As Frank Sinatra croons through your small house, you feel a warm body settle in behind you. Bernie wraps his arms around you once more and pulls you down carefully with him until you’re laying on the floor and you nuzzle into his body, reveling in the warmth he is providing.

You waste the day with Bernie, shutting the cold out and just spending quality time with your soulmate. By the time you’re warm enough to move away from the fire, you are caught in a blissful sleepy haze that has you reluctant to stir.

Bernie wakes you up before you’ve even realized you fell asleep, placing kisses all over your face, gazing adoringly into your eyes when you look his way. The way he looks at you gives you butterflies, even after being together for so long. “What are you lookin’ at?”

“The love of my life. I love you so much, YN,” he replies, placing a chaste kiss firmly on your lips.

“I love you too, Bernie.”

Divine Me A Masterpiece Challenge

♦ About

Welcome to my 1000 follower challenge!!! With there being a lot of seasonal challenges right now I thought I’d do something a little different. I thought that maybe we should get in touch with magic that’s in the air right now ;)

So for this challenge we are looking at tarot! First I’ll go over the rules and expectations, then gloss over tarot, and finally round out this post with the characters and prompts. So let’s get started :D

To Enter

You must apply through my ask box so no anons. If you are using a side blog and don’t want your main shown to the world tell me so in the ask and I will not post it publicly.

Every entry needs to be inspired by a Major Arcana card and must be focused on a character or ship I listed.

Each card is limited to one person!

Entries must be sent by ask and will be posted publicly!

I have bonus prompts listed at the bottom of this post; you need to use at least one (1) and you are limited to three (3) total! Sentence prompts are all first come, first serve! The majority of the AU prompts have a two person limit.

What your ask should include - the tarot card you wish to claim, the character or ship you wish to write for, and 1-3 of the prompts/AUs I have listed (You need to use at least one from the list).

All angst must have a happy ending and no cis-swapping.

I am accepting - fics, fan art, moodboards, edits, and playlists (you need to make a cover for it).

Note: I work second shift so please don’t panic if I don’t respond in the afternoon/evening hours.

November 24th, 2018 - I currently am just shy of 1000 followers and will not be posting a due date for these until I get 1000 followers. I will tag all who entered when that happens.

♦ About Tarot

We’ve all seen the decks of cards with beautiful designs used for helping find possible answers to questions we may have, but not everyone knows what’s going on with them. I will gloss over the bare minimum of info here, but I encourage you all to read up on tarot if you are unfamiliar with it.

Tarot cards are used for uncovering possible answers to questions we have about our lives - from love to career. Cards can be drawn and placed in a certain layout (spread) and are then read in a specific order. They are meant for enlightenment and what they tell in the spread is not set in stone - they are cards and you can ignore their take if you wish.

There are two ways to read the cards depending on how they appear in a spread - upright and reversed (upside down). If the card is revealed to be right-side up you are to read the card as is and if it is reversed then it’s meaning is reversed.

Depending on the deck, the description of the card can vary slightly, but overall they are similar. Also, the meaning behind the card is affected by the other cards in the spread. For this challenge you will only have to worry about the card you selected.

Because there are in total 78 cards in a standard deck (divided between the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana), we will only be using the Major Arcana which totals 22 cards.

It’s my birthday!!!

Well...okay, it’s not my birthday yet. But I figure that it’s a good idea to kick this thing off early :)

Welcome to my Birthday Challenge! Also called - I Gift Thee Chris and Karl!

This year I’m turning 22 on May 29th. Not that that really factors into the details of the challenge, but now you know! Anyways, I was trying to think up a good theme for the challenge and as I was listing out possible characters for you all to use I realized that a lot are either portrayed by Chris or Karl. Then it hit me - why not just have the whole challenge centered around them?
