splatoon 3 hot take turned impromptu essay

was stuck offline in splatoon 3 because internet was actin up and i realized how pretty the photomode splatoon 3 filters are compared to the actual game

i was taking photos on brinewater and thought. damn. this game looks fine but i miss how VIBRANT splatoon 1 was! i wish i could play sploon 3 with this photomode filter on all the time. and brinewater is the best map for this because of the sunset lighting! so i went to one of the worst offenders mapwise for general color—undertow spillway. it is a warm gray mess:

for someplace underground, it’s WAY too warm of a tone—even if there are skylights, they aren’t very well defined, as they’re off in the background—they’d be better with some light shafts to pop out more, imo.

so here’s undertow with photomode filter #6 (this would’ve been a video but tumblr limits to 1 video per post):

and i think this looks a lot nicer, colorwise! the icky warm gray is shifted to a soft pink—and while that’s still not in keeping with the lack of obvious skylights, it works better than warm gray.

so then i opened ibis x paint and got to work on a filter that would hopefully help elevate the entire game’s look:

on top is photomode filter #6, in the middle is the original screenshot, and on the bottom is my proposed filter.

i upped the contrast, brightness, and saturation a bit, then added a 5% pure magenta (#FF00FF) overlay layer on top of that. then i added a slight gaussian blur to emulate antialiasing, which nintendo refuses to do for some reason!

and i wanna play splatoon like that! i miss the vibrancy and intricacy of splatoon 1…

incoming splatoon 1 essay‼️

not only were the colors eye-bleachingly bright, but the overall game feel was much more immersive—especially in ink physics. you could paint trees, and the ink would drip down through leaves as if it were rain… ink splatter would respond to the movements of platforms, keeping its intertia as it dripped! you could see the textures of surfaces through the ink, as if it were an actual liquid instead of a layer of thick oil. 3 doesn’t have any of those special touches.

there’s also the music… 1’s ost feels so much more WEIRD and experimental than the later games, and that really helps cement that this is not human society—this is a new thing—which tracks for splatoon 1, as it was so zany nobody had ever seen anything quite like it before! splatoon 2 follows this sheer melting-pot of brashness and creativity with evolving and varied styles—where once was punk and weird samples in Squid Squad is now groovy rock in Wet Floor, jazz in Ink Theory, and also whatever Sashi-Mori was. also i <3 chirpy chips. splatoon 3’s music goes back to that punk, but i feel that it loses some of the charm and creativity of the first two games. C-side is pure metal, and hardly uses any weird instruments. there have sparsely been other splatbands involved with regular battle music—Yoko&tgb call back to the jazz of Ink Theory which i love! Off the Hook’s new tracks delve into a new style in piano rock. but the main band kind of falls flat to me. :(

let’s talk stages. in splatoon 1, stages were wildly different from each other, including skateparks, construction sites, underpasses, malls, sewage plants, and other locals that are culturally underground. the rest of the trilogy moves away from this in a story standpoint, as ink battles evolve from punky, diy competitions into full-fledged championships in 2 and 3, with advancing battle infrastructure as time progresses. that’s fine, and honestly it’s cool to see that kind of worldbuilding! but in 1, each stage was designed about and influenced by the area it represented. Arowana Mall is a straight line with high vantage points on the second/third story because it’s a mall. Pirahna Pit features convenyor belts that shuffle refuse around because it’s a trash plant. Blackbelly Skatepark has so many hills and valleys because it’s a skatepark, for goodness sake. splatoon 3’s original stages have some of this charm, but it feels lost in ambiguity. why doesn’t Mincemeat Metalworks have small moving platforms on cranes or other heavy machinery? Idk, have some grates and one-way drops, and a car on a post. why isn’t there any water incorporated into the stage design of Brinewater Springs? Idk, have 2 paintable walls and a tetris piece. 3’s original stages have little to no connection between their locals and the geometry, which make it feel same-y compared to previous games.

maybe this is because of the inflexible philosophy of the designers—or their corporate oversight, maybe. for stages, you need to make a straight line or tetris piece with few routes to push, in an effort to promote the game’s main premise of Chaos. for music, you need to make punk songs that aren’t too weird so they don’t drive away the parents. maybe the little ink touches could have been missing because development was rushed?

i honestly dont know why it happened out this way—perhaps the splatoon team just needed more time to cook, in order to squeeze out that extra 20% of game feel? or maybe it was that speculated corporate oversight, i dunno. things WERE missing on launch—notable exceptions being X rank, online tableturf lobbies, and no more than three salmon run maps. i know we’ve yet to even get the DLC but for being about 75% of the way through the game’s content lifespan, but splatoon 3 feels incomplete. there have been improvements, yeah! i just wish there could’ve been more. i would rather have waited another year for splatoon 3 if it were polished that much better, y’know?

i honestly feel like splatoon 1 captured that creative, no-holds-barred mantle of Chaos better than 3 does. 3 feels… flanderized, in a way. the curse of trilogies, perhaps? writing about it more, it feels like not only have the in-game sports of turf war been ripped out of its seedy home and thrust into the spotlight, and gone “mainstream” (see: massive squidsport companies investing in multimillion battle lobbies with holograms and lockers [sunken scroll about that!], flying coffee machines that grant you brief invincibility, new rules and techniques that allow squid surges and rolls, etc.), but also the Real Life Physical Video Game Cartridge of Splatoon has been popularized massively with the sequels on the Switch. maybe i’m not missing the “vibrancy” of splatoon 1 when i look at the colors and photomode filters of splatoon 3, but instead the inherent punkiness and counterculture inspiration that i see in the original.

The steps will be below!!

WALKTHROUGH / STEPS:

STEP 1) Go to: https://www.yerich.net/userbox/

STEP 2) Input this code in the "left box (ID) text" section: <img src= " " height=45 width=45>

STEP 3) Take the image you want, right click, and copy the image URL. Keep in mind to copy the URL, not the image itself.

STEP 4) Choose your colors! You can use some websites to choose matching colors from an image (https://imagecolorpicker.com/en), or choose / edit colors with another website! (https://htmlcolorcodes.com). The colors (IIRC) have to be hex code values!

STEP 4.5) This is just a quick guide to the different areas of the userbox:

Our contributors will work on an assigned kettle for their zine assignment, which can be an art work or a piece of writing. 2.- "Would a portfolio be absolutely necessary to join as an artist of any kind?" + "Are there any requirements/expectations when presenting our portfolio?"  R = Per our guidelines, a linkable and viewable portfolio is needed for our contributor applications. It can be done in any way you like and contain how many pieces you want that show us your work! Your portfolio doesn't need to have Splatoon samples but it is encouraged. As well, we expect to see 1 background example. Portfolios with NSFW, suggestive illustrations or (heavy) gore won't be accepted nor taken into consideration, ending in an instant rejection for the applicant. 3.- "What does it mean exactly to be a supporter and what do they do?"  R = A supporter is a person who supports yet does not contribute to the zine as an artist or writer would do! They normally share the zine's posts, talk about it with their friends, or maybe even just follow us. Top five extant waistcoats 👀👀

How dare you make me choose, agh! I have exactly 1302 images on my 18th century waistcoats pinterest board right now, so here are 5 that I especially love, but picking a definitive top 5 is impossible. (I already have a long post with 20 of my favourites, but I kept those confined to just the last 2 decades of the century.)

1. c. 1790's, Cooper Hewitt collection.

This one is super cool, because it's the only one I've ever seen with net overlay. Look at it! Teeny tiny baby 2mm silk ribbon, all hand knotted.

2. c. 1750's, V&A.

This one is printed to shape! Someone made a big engraved plate with this design that's specifically made to fit the front of a waistcoat! It's a bit off looking around the edges, so I think maybe the customer was a bit smaller than the pre-printed fabric shape, but it's still so cool.

There are more examples of this technique, and I have a pinterest board section for them.

3. This one. Wool thread on linen, sold by Christie's. Ugh, I want one!! Wouldn't this look amazing with my dark green wool 1730's coat and breeches?

I would love to do a crewel embroidered waistcoat like this someday. This grainy picture is the only one I've been able to find of this one, and I once tried emailing Christie's to see if there were more pictures, but they have a lot of employees and didn't seem to understand what I wanted, and the listing was from 2009, so I was not successful.

I hate it when auction sites take down the pictures after the sale!! >:( Nowadays when I pin pictures from auction listings I always make sure to back them up on the wayback machine. There are so many old ones that I wish I'd done that for... Crewel waistcoats are pretty rare, so there aren't many closeups out there, but these 1734 pocket flap samples are a great example of something similar. (got a subsection for crewel on my embroidery pinboard)

4. c. 1735-45, Historic Deerfield. There are tons of woven to shape waistcoats out there, but this is one of my favourites. I love huge flowers, I love sleeved waistcoats, and I love green.

It looks amazing at nearly 300 years old, so just imagine it when all those silver threads were new and not tarnished!

Similar to the blue printed one, this would have been woven with the brocade flowers in the shape of the front of a waistcoat, and then sold to a customer who'd then bring it to a tailor to have it made up to fit him. One of those things that was easy to find in the 18th century, but is completely unattainable to modern costumers, alas.

5. c. 1795-1800, The Met.

Heeheehoohoo. bugs.

There are a lot of late 18th century waistcoats with weird little pictures embroidered on them, and I can't choose a favourite, but bugs is way up there on the list. This isn't even the only bug embroidered one, there are others!

This one has been altered. I'd say it was probably originally made in the 1780's, and then cut down to be shorter and given a different collar shape sometime in the early 19th century. Lots of waistcoats were altered like this, and with the embroidered ones it's really obvious. I would have liked this one better in its original state, but oh well.

So! Those are not the very best 5, but they're 5 very good ones!

hello! i would love to hear the rant about PET scans :3

Holy shit so okay I'm in the train for the next 20 minutes, and I _know_ that's not enough time to get into all of it, but I could rant about this for hours, so. Maybe we cap this at 20 minutes. [20 minutes later] Okay so I wrote a huge wall of very boring text that barely started getting into it, so let me provide way less detail, actually:

It is massively expensive. A PET scanner costs a lot. And it's not a one time purchase, and then you can do scans, no, you wish. You also need some very expensive equipment to create radioactive tracers (which are what is used to do a PET scan) on site, because that stuff needs to be created fresh (under an hour) before every scan. To create the tracers is ALSO incredibly expensive. A single PET scan costs multiple thousands.

This also means that PET research makes use of as few participants as possible. A study with 15 participants is considered big. You simply cannot infer from 15 participants to the whole population. This also means that, statistically, it is highly likely that you don't find an effect even though it exists - meaning if your PET study looks for the effect of A on B, it is highly likely that it will find that A has no effect on B even though it does - simply because you didn't have enough participants (if this explanation doesn't make sense, let me know, and I can explain in detail)

This, together means, that an absolutely absurd amount of money is used for research that, by design, will not find results, because to find results, they would need more participants and even more money.

Because scientific publishing is a shitshow at the moment, research that doesn't find results very rarely gets published, especially not if you can't even be sure whether the result is right. So absurd amounts of money put into research that doesn't even get published.

And I haven't even talked about the results they did find and issues with them. Don't ask me to explain those. Don't tempt me to put hours into writing a multiple page essay that nobody will read.

So, in conclusion: PET is an absolutely amazing feat of engineering that is magnificent in detecting cancer and with it we could learn so. Much. More about the brain and how it works. But to do that, a lot of the basic organisation of how we do science would first need to change. Many labs would have to collaborate and be okay with making the collected data openly available, so appropriate sample sizes (=numbers of participants in a study) can even be achieved (Here's a paper on that). That probably won't happen, though.

Now, obligatory note: one of the professors who taught me about PET is a man who wrote an extremely controversial paper about exactly this stuff, despite also using PET in his research. If you like niche drama in science, look into this paper and all the articles that are responding to it.

05-13 → HBW, an anti who significantly participated in 813, made a post supporting Zhang Sanjian and said his friend had attended the concert. 

Additional Reading: → There is a Twitter space being held tonight to recap birthday events and announce giveaway winners. → Much of what happened with the Zhang Sanjian concerts seems to be directed at targetting CPFs. It’s been noted that many fans of other celebrities and accounts unrelated to c-ent have been claiming the concerts’ legitimacy and trying to hostilely engage with CPFs about it; ignore and block.    Some elements of the concerts themselves also were clearly intended to appeal to CPFs: some background dancers wore the white Givenchy lock jacket that Gong Jun wore the matching jacket to in Dream Garden, and in some of the “chance encounter” photos Zhang Sanjian was wearing the tshirt Gong Jun wore to the 2022-09-16 LV fashion show.    A reminder that CPFs have so far been the largest faction arguing against the scam, they have reason to want to divide us.

Dreams and Fables - 1x1 Discord Partner :)

Hi all! My name is Fawn (She/Her, 26, Canadian), and I want to expand my horizons in search of a new writing buddy! I am ONLY looking to write 1x1 on a private Discord server.

I am seeking a partner to write 1x1 with. I am not looking to join any sites or servers at this time. The main genre I tend to focus on is Supernatural/Supernatural creatures. Please note that I do not write in any fandoms, considering my characters are only OCs.

I am a muse bomb ready to explode... ;) I am looking for someone active, ready to send me gifs, playlists, Pinterest boards, muse in general, and of course, write something awesome! I am looking for someone who can post minimally two to three times a week. It does not have to be super quick or super long responses, but I don’t want to wait for more than a week or so (of course under certain circumstances, I understand!)

What I’m looking for in a partner?

• 25+ is a requirement. Preferably She/Her or They/Them due to unfortunate past experiences.

• I would prefer if a partner was in a similar timezone as myself, just to make plotting/musing/writing easier for both of us. I am currently in CST (GMT-6). A difference of one to three hours is ideal.

• Must have an advanced writing style. (3-5 paragraphs - Novella length replies preferred, but not necessary depending on circumstances/plots/etc). I also enjoy Rapid Fire, and shorter replies, as long as the literacy/grammar skills are still present. 

• Active (Replies at least 2+ times a week.)

• Someone who is enthusiastic about plotting and characters and coming up with unique ideas!

• Someone who plays a wide variety of characters/personalities. I ONLY play males, and if we are writing romance/smut, I would prefer if your character was female as all of my characters are heterosexual.

• Please keep in mind I do not have any triggers or sensitive subjects. That being said, I will fully respect yours, so please let me know if you have anything that is a no-go.

• Please note that I do not write with anime/cartoon/drawn characters. Characters must have a faceclaim belonging to a real person/celebrity.

• I will ask for a writing sample (can be from a site, another 1x1 setting, etc. As long as it is current), just to make sure that our writing styles will work well together. Thank you for your understanding in advance. :)

Plots I’m interested in?

• I love my ships - I only do M/F, where I write M. I do not write F under any circumstance. I love my fluff/smut and will defend our ships fiercely!

• I REALLY want plots involving angst/fluff/dark subjects! I'm a sucker for trauma, character development, dark histories, crazy scenarios, adventures, etc. As previously stated, mostly anything goes as long as it is in one of the genres listed above.

• Friendship plots - I love a good friendship plot, childhood friends, etc. Whether it be simply platonic or grows into something more.

• I’m a big fan of angst that will cause my characters some discomfort, annoyance, and character growth. Whether it traumatizes them for life or not is up for debate...

• I’m generally a big fan of romance and smut (of course some angst and fluff thrown in there). If this isn't something you're comfortable with, please do not reach out.

What are my hard no’s?

• Darker than dark – If we are writing smut, I will not write rape/pedophilia/extreme abuse under any circumstance.

• God-Modding/power playing - Some situations call for a little bit of push or shove from either side, but please do not try to control my character's actions or words without my permission or talking to me first. 

• Not so serious - Please keep in mind that writing is a hobby for me, not a fight to the death. All of my boys hold a very special place in my heart which I will protect and defend, but please keep OOC and IC separate and I will do the same.

Anything else?

• I am extremely picky and protective when it comes to my face claims.

• I LOVE musing, and I will send gifs and writing prompts I think fit our characters. I get really excited about plots.

• I am currently working Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30 CST. Therefore, I am around mostly only evenings/weekends.

I think some may have forgotten this was started as a review blog, and I kind of did too ; _ ;  I’ve been going through a massive burnout these past 8 months or so and not really doing anything with UTAU at all, including keeping up with these reviews...I’m still working on the requests though, just maybe not in chronological order!

Yu Fujimura was born from one's desire to create music. Their physical form is only made up of miscellaneous notes and melodies, hoping to one day share them with the world.

Yu has an official website on Carrd. Voicebank downloads are linked on the home page. The V2 VCV is 381 MB when unzipped and comes with fully generated .frq files.

First Impressions

Yu has a childish and feminine voice with nasal qualities who’s great for adding “oomph” and power to a project.

Configuration

The voicebank has C4, F4, and A#4 pitches and a Soft pitch recorded at E4. The only extras are end breaths and glottal stops, which interestingly are only available as vowel transitions. The transitions between pitches are very smooth, which I extra appreciate since I struggle with it in my own banks.

The vocal range peters out at about G3, but can go up to about F5 or so with no difficulty. Using the soft pitch makes the low range sound less nasally and more pleasant. but only increases the low range a little bit. I was a little disappointed with how similar the soft pitch sounds in tone to the other 3, I would love to hear this voice type with more timbres to pick from. The Soft pitch does have a slightly different enunciation/sound, but UTAU brightens the sound and makes it sound more like their other pitches.

Yu’s oto uses consistent values for every category except the offset, with a 1:3 ratio for the overlap/preutterance.

Final Thoughts

Yu’s strong tone and pretty singing voice make for a really fun voice to play around with ♡ This is only the creator’s second voicebank, which is really impressive! Keep going!

Hi there! I’ve been studying Gàidhlig on Duolingo for a while now and wanted to expand to Irish to understand the similarities and differences, only to find that there’s a bunch of weird AI/computer voice stuff in there that doesn’t match correct pronunciations at all. Would you have any advice on where to go to hear some proper voice samples? For Scottish Gaelic there’s learngaelic.scot which has lots of lessons and videos. I’m looking for something similar for Irish. No worries if you can’t think of anything! <3

Anon, I am so sorry! I answered this in my head and forgot that that isn't the same thing as actually posting an answer XD

I love the idea of looking at the two languages together! I was in Scotland late last year and I got so much entertainment just out of reading signs in Scottish Gaelic because so much of it was so similar to Irish and then suddenly there'd be a word or phrase that would be totally different. It was interesting to understand so much of a language I have never actually learned!

In terms of resources, I'm afraid I don't really know somewhere that does short learner clips. I learned my basics in school so I'm not very knowledgable about online resources... Of course there's most likely people on youtube who do lessons but I don't watch any so I can't reccomend anyone specific.

However! A few things to try are: 1) Teanglann: It's an Irish-English/English-Irish dictionary (it also has helpful grammar stuff) but! more relevant to your ask it has a recording of an actual person saying many, though not all, of the words! For example, the listing for Irish (language):

The site actually covers three dictionaries, those are the first three tabs. The fourth tab is grammar relevent to the word (declensions and conjugations, very helpful!). The last tab is pronunciation and covers the three main dialects. It's really helpful and quite interesting to hear the differences between the regions. Ulster Irish (the top one) should be the most similar to Gàidhlig. I love this site.

2) Irish Langauge Television: TG4 is the Irish language channel and much of its programming can be viewed online outside of Ireland. Some things are geolocked but not all. It has English subtitles, though annoyingly Irish subtitles seem to be a bit more case by case... And even if you feel a full on drama or documentary is a bit too much yet, there's short films and children's television or even the news which is obviously read out in a particularly clear way.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but hopefully someone who follows me might have a better idea of resources?

•unsure about a product? literally just type in “(product name) reddit” on google and you’ll find people sharing their true opinions. when you go on the sephora site and check reviews, a lot of them will say “received free product” and people tend to not be honest when getting free things. also join the sephora and ulta sub reddits to stay updated on all the promos, gifts with purchase, etc!

•you’ve probably saw me talk about them on my blog a hundred times but SHOP MISS A i’m telling you truly is a great website. i get so many makeup and skincare essentials from there it’s unreal. so good for my budget baddies! when shopping from there though i recommend sticking to their in house brand AOA Studio and their charity lines such as A+ and PawPaw. I use their AOASkin cleanser and it’s so amazing at removing makeup but it doesn’t strip your skin at all. i love their squalane moisturizer and their gel one in the green pack.

•always keep a mental note of your drugstore ride or dies. i know that high end brands products and sephora sprees are really trendy right now but don’t forget your roots! you always want to have cheap products you know you can rely on, regardless of who you are. what happens when you run out of your $40 foundation and it’s not payday yet, but you need to do a full beat? idk ab u but i know wet n wild is gonna come in clutch for me

• DO NOT buy the elf putty bronzer. so random, but that product is so hyped up on tiktok for no reason. the product gets hard quick and it’s patchy to blend despite how much working around i did to try and make it work.

•DO buy the elf satin foundation and the contour wands 😮‍💨especially if you are looking for a good drugstore contour, just buy it. it’s a new holy grail for me that i’ll definitely be repurchasing. it blends so good, has a smooth texture, and $9. my only tip would be to take the sponge applicator off, i squeezed out 3 uses worth of product from it after the FIRST time i ever used it.

•if you have facebook, depending on a couple factors you can get free sample ads to pop up. it’s very legit, i’ve received sample BOXES from macys and bloomingdale’s. i just got my bloomingdale’s box and it came with a mini valentino lipstick and many perfume samples! it does take time and patience, you won’t get one right away.

do: have ad tracking turned on and join the “freebie hunters” group. when somebody posts their screenshot of a sample they got, go google the product, search on the internet like you have actual interest in it. it’s a lot of watching and waiting, but i’ve received literally dozens of things from these little ads. basically all i do is google makeup and perfume and hope i get them on my feed. joining that group keeps you up to date on what to look out for. i’m sure you can google it and there will be something else explaining it better than i can if i don’t make sense😅

Gamora MCU- THAT'S a woman that needs a weird fucking hobby. I'm gonna go ahead and say give her a DEEP passion for slime molds. Like it should go far enough that she endangers the crew to try and get new samples for her EXTENSIVE collection of Substances from all sorts of planets. I think her collection should be bodily harmful if it escapes containment too like there should be some that you cannot look directly at. Elektra Natchios favorite flower is Orchids and I think they should lean into that and make her an expert on that like she wins award shows for her incredibly funky orchids (there are over 28,000 species of orchids and she's GOTTA catch em all). I actually think Peggy Carter is pretty cool already but I think you should make her waaay more into war history and not in a cool way. She knows So Many Facts about So Much Minutiae and only her and like 2 other people in the world care about said facts. Valkyrie already owns bones and one of the few things I actually liked in thor 4 was her little Phantom of the Opera shirt i would very much like to know more about Valkyrie being a theater geek. Another alphas-act-like-bowerbirds A/B/O Codywan AU  snippet! This fic has been fighting me lately, though that may have also had to do with both my kids being sick over the course of a week and then coming down with a nasty cold myself.

Perhaps, Obi-Wan thought, blowing on the steaming mug of tea in his hands, he should talk to Cody about this… situation. The flowers and little trinkets were one thing but telling him to sit down and let him work had been pure Alpha behavior. But, he reminded himself, he shouldn’t read too much into it. It would almost certainly pass.

His gaze fell on his tent—and the man standing in front of it, regarding his work with a content expression. Obi-Wan blew out a slow breath. Surely it wouldn't hurt to show a little gratitude; he was quite grateful for the chance to get a warm drink.

“Thank you, Cody,” he said, stepping closer. 

Cody turned to face him, gaze open and warm, “Sir, do you like it?”

“I—yes, thank you, Cody. It looks,” he glanced at the tent, built up with military precision, any stray rocks or branches cleared meticulously from the site, “perfect, Commander.”

He couldn’t help but notice the pleased flush spreading on Cody’s face at his words, his eyes alight with satisfaction.

Well, this took a little longer than expected but it also turned out a bit longer. Thank you so much for the prompt, Adi! I hope you enjoy it!

They pulled into the car pool lot mid-afternoon. Cody stifled a groan when he saw a familiar sedan parked in Rex’ preferred parking spot, some of his brothers lingering around it and making their way over before Obi-Wan had turned off the engine.

Cody gave him an apologetic look, grimacing when he saw Fives downright bouncing toward them with a shit-eating grin on his face, “Looks like you’ll get to have the dubious pleasure of meeting some of my brothers right now already. Whatever they say or do, I apologize for them in advance.”

Obi-Wan laughed softly, jotting down the last entry in the van’s travel log, “Well, let’s not keep them waiting, babe.”

By the time they got their bags out of the back of the van his brothers were there, all three of them shooting obvious glances at Obi-Wan. “Obi-Wan,” Cody said, before any of them could say anything, “meet Rex, Fives, and Echo.”

“My pleasure,” Obi-Wan said, smiling easily and shaking everyone’s hands before softly touching the small of Cody’s back and saying in a low voice, “There’s Agen. I’ll be right back.” Cody simply nodded, aware of Obi-Wan moving off to finish the handover while his brothers crowded closer.

“So that’s Obi-Wan, huh?” Rex said, staring over Cody’s shoulder, eyebrow raised. “I mean, he’s not bad looking but—.”

“We heard you have a massive crush on him,” Fives put in helpfully. “Rexy said you couldn’t even focus on simple convos because you were busy drooling over this guy. Wolffe and Fox are both pissed that they have to work and can’t see the dude.” 

Cody shot Rex an unimpressed look. “Fuck sake,” he muttered, shouldering his bag and heading for his car. His brothers followed.

Rex grinned, “Well? How’s that crush coming along?”

“We’re well past that,” Cody said drily, unlocking his truck and tossing the bag inside. That brought all three of his brothers up short.

“What do you mean, well past that?” Echo asked.

“Exactly what I said,” Cody replied, smirking. “I hope you guys weren’t planning to follow me home, I have plans.”

Rex’s eyebrows climbed higher, “Plans? Yeah, mom and dad are expecting you for dinner, you didn’t forget about that, did you? Family cookout and all?”

Cody froze. He had forgotten. Fuck.

He shot a look over at Obi-Wan, now at his bike, stowing away his things in the saddlebags. He looked up and caught Cody’s gaze, mouth quirking to grin before sauntering back toward them, helmet tucked under his arm. “Give me a sec,” Cody said and set off to meet him, ignoring his brothers’ snickering.

Cody had hoped for Obi-Wan to follow Cody to his place and then spend a nice evening there. Maybe get some take-out, watch a movie and, ideally, get Obi-Wan spread out in his bed. He felt all prickly along his shoulders as he explained the situation, very aware of Rex, Fives, and Echo lingering by his car, watching.

“Are you really sure? We can put off our evening in until tomorrow, if you prefer,” Obi-Wan said, a small furrow between his brows, after Cody suggested he come along. “I don’t want to impose.”

“You won’t be,” Cody replied. “I want to spend the evening with you and, honestly, I think if I don’t bring you along my siblings might murder me. Seems like Rex has been talking us up.”

Obi-Wan laughed softly. “Well,” he said, eyes glinting with humor, “I don’t want to be responsible for fratricide and I am rather fond of you, so I guess I’ll come along.”

“Fucker,” Cody grumbled goodnaturedly. “I’ll pick you up at five? Or do you want to freshen up at mine?”

“We’ll be late if we do that,” Obi-Wan pointed out, grinning slightly, which was probably true. “Five sounds good,” he continued, brushing a kiss to his lips—Cody ignored the wolf whistles from behind—, and then waved at the others before walking back to his bike, putting his helmet on on the way. Cody took another moment to watch him swing himself on the bike and drive off before going back to deal with his brothers.

They were, unsurprisingly, the last ones to pull up in front of the house. It wasn’t large, really, considering how many of them there were; perhaps even smaller than the house Obi-Wan had grown up in. Nowadays it had a lot of empty rooms with only his parents and the youngest set of twins living there, except when Gregor was home on leave.

The front door opened and Cody’s mother stepped onto the porch, pressing a kiss to his forehead and enveloping him in a hug the moment he reached the top of the steps. “I’m glad you’re home safe again,” she said, ignoring his protests that there was nothing to worry about, and turned her attention to Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan, Cody noted, had his most charming smile on his face as he stretched out a hand in greeting, the salad he’d quickly thrown together while waiting for Cody to pick him up tucked under his other arm. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, ma’am. I’m Obi-Wan.”

She shot an amused glance at Cody, taking the proffered hand and pulling Obi-Wan into a light embrace before ushering them through the door. “Hello, Obi-Wan. Please, just Lori is fine. Come in, both of you. Everybody else is in the backyard already.”

“Of course, Lori. I hope this is okay?” Obi-Wan asked, holding out the covered salad bowl. “It’s just a simple Greek salad.”

what is it with cody stans wanting him to punch obi-wan in a so-called codywan setting? who thinks it's okay or funny or in any way acceptable to wish physical harm upon a partner (romantic or otherwise)? lbr, if someone were to say the opposite you'd hear the cries of rage from the far corners of the internet, but this way around is acceptable? fuck all the way off

Cowboy Bebop #23: “Brain Scratch” | April 3, 1999 | S01E23 Adult Swim premiere: November 12, 2001 - 12:30AM 

Okay, so way back when Adult Swim started I immediately turned my back on Cowboy Bebop for being anime and especially for not being 4 more repeats of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. So I didn’t really on-purpose watch it at all. But the closest I got after turning the first episode off after five minutes was when I watched the last stretch of this episode, context-free. I saw an old man’s face on a bunch of TV screens smugly saying things like (insulting, slightly gayer mimic) “do you know why man believes in god? (long pause) because he wants to.” or “god didn't create humans... it is humans that created god!” while ominous music played. “You see TV has become the new religion” SHUT UP! SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP YOU PRETENTIOUS FUCKING ANIME BULLSHIT. 

It’d liken it to the time when I was under the influence of a COOL ADULT I knew who said All in the Family was lame and preachy and completely overrated. I sampled a single episode on TVLand and it was exactly those things, with an overly simplistic MONEY CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS message that was constantly punctuated with Rob Reiner furrowing his brow thoughtfully at Archie being too STUPID and CONSERVATIVE to understand it all. I drew this comic about it:

Later I downloaded all of All in the Family in MP3 form and listened to them instead of podcasts and you wanna know what? I fucking LOVED IT and thought the show was brilliant and hilarious, all because I didn’t have to look at Rob Reiner scowling. My point is my impression of anime was that it would be exactly as pretentious as this episode is. I happened to catch the one single scene from the show that would reinforce those ideas THE MOST. 

Well, I appreciate this show more now. This episode is fine, I guess. I do still think it’s pretentious. I think there was an episode of Duckman that was more insightful than this that had the same message. TV controls people, they worship it like a religion. Sure. But it’s also cheap hedonistic fun, and what am I gonna do? NOT WATCH IT? Hell, I have TWO TVS going right now as I speak. One is a B&W dailies monitor I bought at a yard sale for 5 dollars. I had to buy an RCA adapter that was 6 dollars to hook up a VCR to it and now I play random tapes on it. I just think it’s cool looking. Sorry, I just realized I haven’t used my tumblr to brag about my B&W monitor yet. I could sell it on eBay for $50 bucks, easy, but I’m not gonna. What was I talking about 

This one is about a guy who is selling a religion where you can allegedly upload your soul into a computer or something, and live digitally. 1000s have seemingly committed suicide for this process. BUT COULD IT BE REAL? And why is the head of this religion unreachable? He appears on TV to hawk his cult on a daily basis. It turns out he’s using the brainwaves of a comatose guy, basically using him like a battery and he’s just a max headroom on a screen. I think. Then he says pretentious stuff to Spike while they kill him. Obvious reference I didn’t realize until this very moment: Heaven’s Gate. That guy. Remember that shit? I do, because I was just becoming an extremely online guy at the time and I remember that being maybe one of the most famous websites out there. I remember the official Monty Python website redesigned their site to parody it, and thinking it was so funny. I recall going to the actual site out of morbid curiosity and my mother freaked out and thought I was going to become a cult member, and I remember feeling like insanely insulted by that and getting into a big fight with her. I don’t even believe in Christian god, you idiot!!!

I like the first act, where they are flipping through TV channels and stuff. All this stuff is strong. But I still think this episode is a little lame and goofy, the same way I did when I stumbled on it in 2001 and s’d my damn h. At it. But, it didn’t piss me off, and that’s worth something.

Very fair, very fair. Baseline—I’m an artist, with my most common trade being writing. I write from the intersections of Blackness, queerness [nonbinary; aro/ace (demi, specifically)], fatness, disability [ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, etc.] and various other forms of social insecurity. To know me at my fullest extents is to know the vastness of the Human™️ experience, which means if you can’t meet me at *all* my intersections, you can probably see some of you in my story *somewhere.* And if you *can* meet me at *all* my intersections, I just feel liiiiikeeeeee…we should be friends. Besties, even.

“So, ok. Cool. Nice to know you. But why’d you make this account?”

Truth is, I need some help. Remember how I said I exist at many places of social insecurity? Yeah, I mean that very literally. I had to leave my old job for health reasons, and have been using the time to apply to places (and write this book/build a personal site/update all my application materials/literally survive day-to-day). Been applying to places for about 3 months straight, and nothing has come back *yet* (though I remain hopeful). But I’ve got bills to pay and food to eat in the meantime, so I need all the help I can get.

So again—to support me *long* term, get my book! Share what inspires you. Keep the conversations around it going.
