atla live action thoughts: episodes 3 & 4
SPOILERS AHEAD
tw: opinions
things i liked:
jet, you beautiful, beautiful man. had me twirling my hair and kicking my feet fr i NEED this show to get a season 2 just so i can see more of him in the ba sing se arc please netflix
but looks aside, sebastian amoruso DELIVERED on the performance. the softness, the vulnerability, the charm, the intelligence, yet also the ruthlessness beneath it all? KILLED IT.
the moment between him and katara where he tells her to remember her mother as she was alive and not just her death was absolutely lovely. “remember the sunrise” made me very emotional
on that note, can’t believe jetara fake marriage is canon now lmao
i am SO here for desi omashu. i love the vibe and aesthetic of the city and again the visuals are STUNNING. live action repping the south asians better than the original ever did i’ll be honest
shameless fan service but “MY CABBAGES” being so fucking dramatic had me dying
of all the things i expected from the atla live action, secret tunnel and omashu being lesbians wasn’t even on the list but i’m not mad. hilarious that they turned the cave of two lovers into the cave of two platonic siblings though
jet, omashu and northern air temple arcs actually meshed together better than i thought. the NAT episode never sat well with me in the original so i’m glad they moved them to omashu instead.
the freedom fighters were RIGHT OUT OF THE ANIMATION. casting directors absolutely killed
love that they showed resistance movements within the fire nation and azula being part of rooting them out. it’s a nice nod to the deserter, since i’m guessing they’re not including that episode
really glad to see that the atla live action is following the tradition of having weirdly unnecessary zutara crumbs in every iteration of the story because what in the om shanti om was that zutara scarf moment. 10/10 no notes
having one of the earthbenders transporting iroh be angry over losing a loved one because of iroh’s siege of ba sing se was a really great change. i’ve always thought the original glossed over the true extent of the damage iroh did, so having him come face to face with what he’d done in the past was a great way to add some complexity
“how dare you beat up that child!” everyone go home seeing zuko being beat up by a random old lady is the highlight of this series. really love that they were just running around throwing things at each other that was major book 1 zuko/aang fight energy lmao
SECRET TUNNELLLLLLLL
leaves from the vine instrumental was 100% to inflict emotional damage and it fucking worked. the scene between zuko and iroh at lu ten’s funeral was so beautiful & then to have it flipped around at the end when iroh says “everything i need is on this boat”… fuck you for this netflix i didn’t need these tears today
things i disliked/am conflicted about:
not a fan of what they’re doing with katara’s character. they’re toning down a lot of her rage and fierceness, and boiling her down to “trauma over mother’s death.” in the original katara didn’t freeze jet and splash water at him because he tried to fight her, she did it because she was hurt and pissed off! there’s no way animated katara would’ve just run away from jet without sending a water whip at his face first. i’m concerned for how the pakku fight is gonna go tbh
bumi my guy, what did they do to you 💀 this series seems hellbent on having everyone remind aang that he ran away which doesn’t work when a) you already changed aang actively running away to him just going off for a break and b) you’ve made that point! the original omashu episode was about bumi teaching aang to look at the world differently, here it just weirdly feels as though he’s punishing aang by venting all his anger and despair on him?? that’s NOT what animated bumi was like & they didn’t even have the two of them go sliding down the delivery system in the flashbacks so adding it in at the end felt very out of nowhere. they didn’t even genuinely seem to be FRIENDS
having aang immediately figure out it was bumi was… sigh. can we please not do the thing where characters already know everything it’s giving me trauma flashbacks to the percy jackson show
jet’s plan feels more reasonable here than it did in the original. i get they’re trying to show that he didn’t care about the collateral damage to innocent people and that’s bad, but idk him wiping out an entire town unilaterally felt more extreme than a few bombings.
heavily dislike what they’ve done with zhao. i know they’re trying to show him clawing his way to power but that’s more of a long feng move than a ZHAO move. it’s important that zhao always holds more power than zuko and that he has an overinflated sense of ego from the start for him to fulfil his narrative purpose of serving as a warning to zuko of what he might become.
i like seeing mailee but why are they in this show? it feels as though they’re cardboard cutouts there for fan service instead of being actual characters
overall i liked these episodes better than the previous two & i do enjoy how action-packed and visually pleasing the show has been so far.
overall rating: 8/10 for episode 3, 7/10 for episode 4

Twst Headcanons: They get sent to your dimension (part 1 - Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, and Octavinelle)
Characters: Riddle, Trey, Leona, Ruggie, Azul, Jade, and Floyd
Tw// vomit, depression, existential crisis, mild body horror, swearing
(Part 2 - beginnings)
Crowley had found a way to send you home. It was sappy, and wizard-of-oz-y, but it was near sure fire.
Alice had once come and gone from a looking glass, but only after her friends of wonderland let her go. And surely, your friends would want what’s best for you, right?
The love you gave to night Raven college touched many loves - you defeated seven overblots, after all, and saved lives over and over again. So the best way they could thank you would be to give you what you wanted after all this time.
Crowley organized it fairly formally. There was a party, courtesy of Kalim’s insistence, followed by unveiling a large mirror and having you stand before it. You were told to think of home - your family, your life before twisted wonderland - and once you had the picture in your mind, a spell was cast to lock it in so you wouldn’t get lost on your way home.
After that, a procession began. It started with the dorm leaders coming to thank you, then the vice dorm leaders (or pseudo vice dorm leaders, and Floyd), and then began your closer friends. The power of so many powerful magic users was enough to get the mirror powered, glowing brightly a shining silver.
Grim was next in line. He looked heartbroken, and almost angry. He said he was happy for you - he didn’t need a henchman, he was the Great Grim and he could do fine on his own. But he hadn’t come to terms with what was going on. Not until that very moment in line.
“I don’t want you to go, (Y/N)! What will I do without you? I’m your family too, right? Stay!”
The mirror pulsated - in a single breath, Grim had messed up the spell. Before you had time to even respond, a burst of energy rushed forth from the mirror.
And as soon as the light faded and the screams died off, everyone looked up in horror to realize what happened.
You were gone…but so were they
Riddle:
* Riddle was first in line to say goodbye. As the first overblot, and a dorm leader, and a close friend, he wanted you to know he supported your decision to go home.
* What he didn’t expect was Grim’s declaration, nor the tug at his chest that followed
* Suddenly, he was falling. He felt something he couldn’t describe leave him, dissipate into the air. It felt like the opposite of the overblot, and he hated it.
* He would have screamed if it hadn’t stopped as suddenly as it had started, and suddenly he was laying on the floor, dizzy, and having a hard time focusing on his surroundings.
* He immediately tried to sit up, only to pass out again.
* He’s out like a light, man, dude hasn’t slept in three days to begin with and now? He’s drained. Portals are exhausting
* When he does wake up, it’s to Trey shaking him gently
* “Riddle? Are you alive?”
* The room is oddly quiet, but Riddle realizes it’s because they’re alone in this room.
* Wait, who’s room is this?
* A child’s, maybe? There’s a lot of plushies…
* No, wait, he remembers-
* Wait, IS THIS YUU’S ROOM?
* What happened???? Trey??? Explain???
* Upon finding out he’s stuck in a world with no magic by talking to you, he’s gonna try his signature spell
* Everyone else is going to groan, snicker, or sit silently as they watch him
* “It’s okay, Goldfishie, performance issues are nothing to be ashamed of.”
* “Floyd, I swear on the seven, when we get back, I’ll have your head.”
* “Kinky.”
* He is NOT happy about being in a different world, Yuu, please help him
* Once he has everything explained to him a little better, he’s headed for your bookshelf
* He may also ask you for a cup of tea
* He might/can/will start cleaning your house if it’s not in order
* “This is not a proper way to live, Y/N. According to th-“
Trey:
* Victim number two was standing a couple inches behind Riddle when the portal sucked them in, and somehow managed not to pass out during the ride.
* However, he did see the inside of a wormhole and suddenly popped out the other side in a different world, so maybe passing out is a blessing.
* When he came out the other side, he caught himself during his landing and stumbled a few feet forward. Before he really had a good chance to look at his surroundings he heard screams coming closer from behind him, saw Riddle laying passed out on the floor, and worked as fast as possible to pull him out of the landing zone.
* Which was a good call, because soon after a pile of 6’ft tall guys landed right about there.
* He helped untangle the mess of limbs in a pile on the floor and took stock of everyone.
* Alright so there’s riddle, Leona, him, the twins, Azul, rook and vil, Jamil and Kalim, Idia, malleus and Lillian, Ruggie, aaaand…
* You! There you are.
* So…this is your home? Interesting.
* He’ll take stock of everything he sees, because he’s currently in survival mode.
* This isn’t the first time NRC students have been stuck in a different world, he knows how this works by now-
* Oh, hey, you look sick. Here, sit down, and - is this cup okay to use? Okay, cool, one second, I’ll fill it.
* Huh
* Wait…
* He tries to fill the cup with cold water using his magic. He doesn’t know where your kitchen is, after all, and…
* Huh.
* His magic isn’t working.
* And now that he’s thinking about it, some of the guys did look…different.
* Right, this is a world without magic.
* Okay.
* Right.
* Cool
* Don’t panic, Trey, it’s fine
* If you could get to their world without magic, then it’s possible for them to get back, right?
* Right?
Leona:
* Leona isn’t quite sure what happened, he just remembers that one second he’s saying goodbye, then he’s in pain, then he wakes up somewhere unfamiliar and feels weird.
* Everything somehow sounds both quieter and louder at the same time, and all his joints feel achy
* Overall, he feels like he was hit by a bus, and tries to go back to that sticky sleep state he was in before.
* And then he feels something weird.
* Someone’s pinching his ear.
* But…that’s not where his ear is supposed to be.
* “Herbivore? What the fuc-“
* He opens his eyes and is face to face with Yuu, who is staring at him like he’s grown three heads
* “(Y/N), what are you doi-“
* Why are you holding his mouth open
* What the fuck
* Why are you- are you touching his teeth?!
* “Leona, I have bad news.”
* Upon hearing that all his lion traits are gone, he’s flipping his absolute shit.
* Excuse me?! Yuu?! Fix this. Now
* Oh, and we’re stranded in a different world without magic? Great job. He should have left you stranded in his world instead.
* He’s gonna need a minute to cool off.
* It’s best to approach next time with something to eat, and hold it out as far as possible
* He may not have fangs anymore but he will still bite you.
Ruggie:
* Ruggie takes everything surprisingly well.
* See, at first he’s pretty freaked out.
* His body is different than before and he’d really like for it to go back to normal, please
* He’s checking over himself in the mirror to see what’s missing and what stayed.
* He doesn’t appreciate anyone commenting on it
* But once he’s done freaking out, he starts asking questions about your world.
* Turns out your world isn’t that different. Even though there’s no magic, it’s not all that different from where he’s from
* So with a few books, some snacks, a few dollars, and a nap, he’s good to go.
* If he’s gonna be here for a while, and it’s pretty safe to assume that they’re not gonna be back in a bit, he wants to immediately ingratiate himself to you
* He’s not even really worried about the magic part. He never really relied on it anyway
* Oh, look, you have some laundry. Let him take care of that, Y/n, it’s no problem, really. Isn’t it nice to have someone help with chores? And he can make some food for cheap.
* His ability to take it in stride is almost entirely because for the first day he assumes it’s a dream.
* Day three he has a bit of a breakdown
* After his breakdown he starts acting a little more normal, again
Azul:
* The screaming everyone heard in the portal was mostly him.
* He’s seeing universe after universe, timeline after timeline, colors that don’t exist, and it’s scaring the piss out of him
* He’s another one who didn’t pass out, but he’s clinging to Jade like his life depends on it (it may have, if he kept flailing he might have ended up in a different universe)
* Meanwhile Jade just has a surprised pikachu face the entire time
* When they finally get through the portal, the fish mafia end up puppy-piling on the floor, with Azul stuck between Jade and Floyd.
* Unfortunately Floyd is unconscious and on the top.
* Trey, you’re his savior, he owes you.
* He’s finally on his feet, and his legs are shaking beneath him
* He looks like he’s gonna throw up. He thinks he may have seen god.
* His glasses are also missing, now.
* They might have been left behind in the multiverse.
* He’s catatonic for a solid twenty minutes, mumbling to himself while curled in a ball, staring at the floor.
* Nobody can get his attention until eventually he calms down enough to snap out of it.
* Trey is handing him a bottle of water, telling him to drink.
* He does
* He has to rush to the bathroom, because he couldn’t keep it down
* The minute someone else is around, he’s trying to act normal and like it doesn’t bother him
* “Oh? Well, we went to the land of the dead, this is nothing?”
* He’s lying, it’s a lot.
* He realizes, sometime in this, that his glasses are missing.
* He tried to summon them
* He is confused and alarmed when he can’t.
* He keeps trying. He looks like he’s snapping a beat
* He is literally going to have an ulcer if he can’t get a handle on this situation.
* Please, god, why doesn’t he have his magic.
* Oh….oh! Nobody does
* It makes him feel a little better, in a sick way, that nobody else has magic.
* He’s still anxious though.
* Please make him sit down. Cover him with a bunch of blankets or something he cannot handle this.
Jade:
* Jade has a pretty thick skin, yknow? But…
* Okay, yeah, this is a little much
* He’s not really one to express emotion to begin with, so his reaction that seems impassive is really just him being surprised
* He’s still processing what Grim said when he’s falling through a portal
* He’s processing the fact that Azul is clinging to his arm, and Floyd has him by the ankle, and that he’s falling in a portal to another world by the time they land
* His face isn’t totally shocked, but more…frozen?
* He’s can’t really identify what he’s feeling. It’s not scared, anxious, or angry. He isn’t happy, nor sad, but it’s something else…
* Wait, hold on, his mouth feels weird.
* Huh.
* His teeth are different.
* Okay, interesting.
* Oh look, Azul is having an existential crisis.
* And Floyd is passed out.
* Alright.
* He isn’t really responding because he wants more information, so as soon as he’s up his face is blank again.
* He’ll help out with whatever he can in the same way that Trey is, but he’s also completely content to leave everyone lying on the floor.
* He’s watching and listening to everyone’s reactions before he’s allowing himself to make his own.
* But also, you probably won’t see it.
* It’s not until late at night when he thinks everyone’s asleep that he finally lets his facade drop. He’s contemplating everything and he thinks Floyd is asleep again when he feels a tap on his shoulder
* It’s Floyd.
* And on his other side, there’s you.
* “Are you okay?”
* He’s a little choked up, but he just nods silently.
* “Do you wanna go for a walk? There’s a forest not far from here, I can drive you over and wait until you’re done if you need some time to think.”
* Floyd is staring at him knowingly, and Jade nods again, mumbling something like ‘that would be appreciated’
* Nobody knows what happened that night. Not even you do. But Jade came back with a clear head, so it doesn’t matter much.
Floyd:
* Floyd was honestly a little pissed at Grim
* He likes Shrimpy too, but they want to go home, so we should let ‘em.
* When he feels something pulse behind him, he doesn’t get a clear look.
* He’s also screaming, but his screams are somewhere between delight and fear.
* He’s grabbing onto Jade’s ankle to keep them from separating as they fall.
* Once he’s through the portal, he lands face first on top of Jade and Azul, unconscious. He may have hit his head.
* When he first wakes up, he notices his mouth feels different too.
* He also immediately notices Jade standing four feet away and whispering with Trey
* He then notices Azul rocking in a corner, Riddle passed out with a pillow under his head, Leona without his fluffy ears, and Ruggie following You around like a lost puppy.
* He’s not really panicking yet because the fact they’re in a different world separated from their own hasn’t set it
* But let’s be honest, this is pretty fun
* An adventure! With his brother and his takoyaki and his Shrimpy and a few others!
* Maybe this world is more fun?
* So he’s up, wandering around, looking through your stuff.
* He 100% tries on one of your shirts and decides it’s his now.
* He also lays in your bed and reads anything of yours that seems personal
* Letters, diary, postcards, legal documents, whatever.
* “Koebi-Chan? I didn’t know that you liked this~”
* “FLOYD PUT THAT DOWN”
* He also spends his time immediately getting on Riddle’s nerves as soon as he’s awake (see: Riddle’s)
* Once he does realize he’s separate from home, he’s in a dark mood, but he’s more thoughtful than anything. He’s thinking about the things he’s gonna miss, how they could get home, if there’s any way to just see Twisted Wonderland, if there’s something he could do to get his favorite things here.
* Overall he’s not pressed though. He does make Leona play one-on-one basketball though.

The show must go on...
AudreyTello turned around just in time to watch as the explosion blew AudRaph several meters back, slamming him into a wall while the majority of the room that housed Audrey III crumbled to the ground. As the glow of deep cobalt, violet, crimson, and bright green filled the room, it chased away the neon electric blue, causing each and every spore it came into contact with to disintegrate.
"NOO!!!" AudreyTello screamed in pure fury. He gripped his head, the familiar ache returning as he could feel the hold over NFIF Donatello started to weaken.
"You... you WRETCHES!! You think this will STOP ME?!"
"Well, we certainly hoped so," Spider-Dee mumbled.
"You pathetic, insignificant, worthless, meaningless, little trifles of trauma-riddled turtles!!" AudreyTello screamed.
"...This might be a shot in the dark, but I think we made him just a teensy bit mad."
"OH, YA THINK?!"
AudreyTello's battleshell erupted with furious weapons building one on top of the other, the purple glow blending with the blue infecting his ninpo. But piece by piece, the purple was starting to take back control...
"It... it's working! The sway is breaking!" Spider-Dee pointed.
"Then let's break it all the way!" Ghost shouted over the commotion, grabbing Spider-Dee and DvD out of habit and jumping away from the spray of mystic missiles and bullets.
Meanwhile, in the rubble, a shield of ninpo created by the infected Hamatos kept MichelAudrelo, AudRai, and poor little Misa safe from the destruction.
"I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THE HAND.PNG SET A FIRE AND BURNED DOWN THE HOUSE!" MichelAudrelo screamed in anger, clenching his fists tightly.
"One less enemy to worry about," AudRai stated calmly. "What is the damage?"
"Our base has been destroyed," MichelAudrelo growled. "Quite obviously."
AudRai held her head as she groaned.
"Our true form... has been wounded," she grunted, looking up slowly.
The mushroom was half-destroyed in the corner, the cap singed and burning slightly, the hyphae curling as the fungus screeched in agony. Leonardo sat under the stalk, his body half-freed, but the blast had knocked him unconscious. He laid limp against the roots that kept him anchored to the floor, half-destroyed and withering beneath his weight.
"They will pay for this," MichelAudrelo snarled.
Blue/gold mystic chains started forming as he approached the battle, seeing the non-Donnie team come round the corner...
"Okay, so the room was destroyed, the spores are dissipating... you guys know what's next?" Leon asked, making sure the plan was still in effect.
"We'll get going to save all the zombies," Spider-Shine said with a smile and a nod, gesturing to the other Spider-Teetlez as Spider-Dee reunited with them. "Get the antidote to anyone with glowing blue eyes!"
"Great, the rest of us will stay behind to help free the swayed and eradicate the rest of the mushroom!"
The Spider-Teetlez shook hands with the group, saying fond farewells before swinging away to complete their quest and save the rest of the AUs...
"Okay then, now we--"
"RUN!!" 'Phael shrieked, pointing to an army of golden chains coming their way.
MichelAudrelo smiled cruelly as he sent the chains to grab at them, the contestants and supporters scattering quickly in all directions to avoid his attacks. One chain grabbed Leon and dragged him forward.
The slider was bound by the ankles and hung upside down in front of the mystic warrior.
"Hello, worm," MichelAudrelo said with a smile.
"Uhhh, heeey there, Angie!" Leon said, hoping the childhood nickname for his brother would strike a chord with this version of Michelangelo.
It didn't.
MichelAudrelo raised his hand.
"You'll regret what you've done..."
"Hey, you!!"
Leon and MichelAudrelo turned in surprise to see who had just shouted at them.
Golden flower petals and butterflies made of light started fluttering down around the boys.
Abby smiled brightly as she threw her crutch aside to Diana. Music starting playing.
"Do you hear that sound? That beautiful sound?"
Giant vines started sprouting from the ground, lifting Abby and MichelAudrelo up into the air. In his shock, MichelAudrelo dropped Leon to the floor, where Diana quickly grabbed him and pulled him aside.
"What are you two doing here?" Leon asked. "You were supposed to stay with Mikey--"
"Slight change of plans," Diana answered. "We brought the cavalry!"
"You didn't bring him here, did you?"
"..."
"Diana, if you value your life you will answer 'no'."
"...Then, no?"
"You're lying to me. Where is he...!" Leon growled as he stormed off to find his Michelangelo.
"YOU SAID TO ANSWER NO!!" Diana shouted as she followed after him, while Abby finally got to do her big number with a 'captive audience'...
Leon rushed off to find his brother, no doubt glowing and sporting his own mystic chains. He was gonna give him an earful when he found him...
As Leon was storming around, something lodged within the wall fell to the ground and groaned behind him.
"URGH!"
Leon whipped around.
"What was that--"
A large spiky shell and limbs started moving from the broken pieces of plaster that had crumbled along with the body on the floor. It slowly started rising, groaning and grumbling. Leon swallowed, tiptoeing closer to the swayed Raph.
"...Diana... go look for Mikey. Make sure he's not doing anything too.... y'know."
"But, what are you gonna--"
"Just go," he whispered. "I'll handle this."
Diana reluctantly obeyed, rushing away before AudRaph could get his bearings back and start attacking them.
Leon crept forwards, wary of the strength this Raphael could have. He knew that his brother 'Phael was pretty strong, though he was mostly unshed baby fat. This Raph was head and shoulders above him, and had been training as a ninja since his childhood, he figured. Besides, he knew that 'Phael had a tendency to go kinda savage when he was really, really scared. And who knew what this fear fungus was making Raph see in his deep subconscious...
"Hey, buddy, it's me, your ol' pal, Neon Leon..."
AudRaph made a low rumbling sound as he slowly got to his knees, still dizzy and dazed.
"I know that whatever you're seeing... i-it's probably pretty rough. I'm sure you think that it's hopeless, but it isn't! You can get through it..."
AudRaph lifted up his head, growling at him with bared teeth.
"Hey, it's okay to be scared. I'm scared most of the time. Have you seen half of the hijinx Mikey gets involved in? I'll bet you know how tough it is, being the oldest brother, the one to look after everyone... But then again, you also know how much they love you. You know how excited they are when they succeed just like you knew they would, the look on their faces when they see how proud you are when they exceed your expectations and blow you out of the water! You're so lucky to be the big brother, no matter how many times they make you worry... because for every grey scale they give you, you get ten extra memories of them and how wonderful they are and how much you love them."
Raphael's blue-glazed eyes started leaking.
"And I know you love them. Because how could you not love our brothers?? You, me, we sacrifice for them all the time, because we would do anything for our little brothers. You'd do anything for your brothers, right? And... you said I would always have a big brother in you. And I need you, Raph -- they need you -- WE NEED YOU. We need you to come back to us..."
Leon placed one hand on Raph's shaking shoulder and cupped the other hand under his cheek, wiping the blue tears from his face.
"Come back to your family, Raph. Because we need YOU. Not a hero, not a sacrificial martyr, we want our brother to come home. Please, Raph. Please."
Raphael blinked away the tears, the final remnants of blue melting away with the tears.
"...L-Leon..?"
"Welcome back, big guy."
Leon was suddenly engulfed in a bear hug, Raph squeezing him tight and shaking all over.
"I'm so sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so so so sorry, Leo LEON, I'm so sorry... please... please, can you forgive me, I never meant to hurt you, I never wanted to--!"
"It's okay, dude," Leon said, trying not to cry himself as he squeezed Raph back. "You old softy."
Leon had to force himself to pull away from the sobbing snapping turtle, offering the end of his scarf for the eldest sibling to wipe his face with.
"Now, let's go wake up the others, hmm?"
April's teleporting powers kicked in as soon as she saw the golden chains coming. She was suddenly in a new place, landing in a small heap of rubble. She turned around and watched as NFIF Michelangelo managed to snag her Leon and reel him in.
"Leo!"
"YOU."
April whirled around to see AudRai coming for her. Her neat braid had been mussed up in the explosion, the strands falling loose and falling apart. Her eyes were surrounded by deep, dark circles and tear stains.
"Karai... what happened to you?"
"What always happens to the Hamatos," she replied glumly. "We die."
"You're not dead yet," April said, gritting her teeth. "I'm not going to let that funky mushroom kill you."
"Why not? You let it kill Michael."
April's breath caught in her lungs.
"...Karai... you don't know what you're saying..."
"It's our doom, our fate," she said, voice wobbling with sniffles as the tears started pooling. "The fate I started us all down... the role I took on, the example I set... it's all my fault--"
Karai started weeping, her voice cracked as her fists clenched.
"It's my fault that Michael died. I felt him leave. Not just because of our family ninpo, I saw him die through the spores. I saw his fears. I watched him go!" she whimpered, falling to her knees.
April's eyes welled up with tears of her own as she slowly understood what Karai was saying.
"It was my fault... I trained him in his ninpo. I taught him all the Hamato magic. I showed him the importance of our traditions, our lore, our creed. I... I... I killed him..."
"You didn't kill him. He's still alive," April reassured her. "And you didn't teach Mikey self-sacrifice. It seems to be a running tendency--"
"But that tendency started with me!" Karai sobbed. "I can't save them, no matter how hard I try! I couldn't save my village, my father, my own grandson! My legacy is to be the failing martyr!!"
April rushed forward and hugged Karai tightly.
"No. That is not your legacy. That is not your destiny. Michael is not dead, and neither are you. Karai, you are more than just your mistakes, more than your defeats. Don't let the fear of failure keep you from succeeding later on! Don't let the past keep you from building up your future! You told me that you saw how strong I was, where do you think I learned that courage from? Don't let this be another failure, don't give up! You can beat this fear. 'You shall not be challenged beyond your strength.' You can overcome it."
Karai stiffened for a second, before softly hugging April back. After a few shaky moments, Karai pulled away. Much to April's relief, her eyes were back to normal.
"Arigatō, April..."
Karai wiped the tears from her cheeks and turned to the small caged-in cradle holding Misa.
"We should help release her."
"Can I offer my help?" NFIF Raph asked, as he and Leon rushed up through the rubble and broken drywall.
April and Karai looked at each other, unsure if that was wise, considering what had happened.
Yet Karai nodded, stepped forwards and used her ninpo to create a small dagger of flame that cut through the vines. Misa was growling and crying, her eyes shut tight as she fought against her nightmares.
Raphael leaned down and picked her up gently, rocking her back and forth.
"If one of the Mikeys were here, they'd know how to snap her out of it," April murmured. "He saved her from the spores last time..."
"Raph knows what to do," he whispered, his voice soft and gentle. "I've had my fair share of getting my little brothers to calm down after a nightmare..."
Raph sat down on a pile of debris as he held on to Misa.
She hissed at him, pushing to get away.
"Misa? Misa, it's me..."
Misa growled again, still struggling to break free from his hold. In her mind, she had just been taken away by an evil scientist who was going to do terrible, mean things to her...
"No!" she snapped, biting his hand.
Raph gasped in pain, but didn't let go. He smiled through the hurt, tears forming in his eyes again.
"I guess I deserved that one, huh?" he chuckled dryly. "Misa, please, it's Raph... it's Ra-Ra?"
Misa slowly stopped, her ferocious bites turning into soft nibbles as she opened one eye, the edges of white turning a soft blue.
"Misa, can you see me? Can you see Ra-Ra?"
She shook her head no.
"...R-Ra-Ra? Ra-Ra has Misa?"
"Yes," he assured her, rubbing his thumb in circles against her cheek, wiping away the bitter and angry tears.
Misa flinched, her eyes widened at the touch.
"...Is Ra-Ra good guy now?"
That hurt. He knew she didn't mean for it to hurt, but the truth was painful nonetheless.
"Yes, Misa," he whimpered. "Ra-Ra is good now. Misa, I'm so sorry for what I did to you... I hurt you so much, Raph is so sorry..."
Even though he knew that he was meant to be comforting her, Raph lowered his head and cried onto her as he held her in his lap.
"Misa... I'm so sorry. I'll understand if you hate me forever after this, I wouldn't blame you. But... I want to help you now, I want to help with the scary things you're seeing. How can Ra-Ra help you?"
Raph felt tiny hands reaching up and touching his face. Misa blinked away the blue, eyes refocusing until she could see Raphael properly.
And Misa smiled.
"Little brudder..."
She kissed his cheek and nuzzled him, hugging his face and wiping away his tears.
"...Misa forgives Ra-Ra. Ra-Ra good guy."
Raphael blubbered at that, whimpering as he pressed Misa against his plastron in a desperate hug. Misa giggled, patting him on the back as best she could, though her arms barely even reached the edges of his shell.
"Thank you, Misa... thank you..."
"Where's Mikey an' Dee-Dee?" she asked, looking around.
"Around here somewhere," Leon replied, looking around. "I'm sure we'll find them eventually..."
"Hey, guys!" Abby shouted at them. "Look who we got!"
Abby gave the performance of a lifetime. She and swayed Michelangelo had been dueling it out against each other for a few minutes while Abby belted out her favourite musical number. She ordered the vines to protect her as she spun and ducked and danced and leapt around the mystic attacks. Her vines reached out and grabbed MichelAudrelo and pulled him high into the air, away from Abby as she finished up her number. MichelAudrelo struggled against the vines, breaking free eventually, but Abby had been prepared for that. Several other series of vines reached up and caught him, much to his frustration.
"THAT BEAUTIFUL SOUND--"
"STOP IT!" MichelAudrelo screeched, lashing out his chains to grab at the feline, but she jumped away at the last second, her choreography coming in to save her as she danced around him gleefully.
"A SOUND THAT MEANS NO MORE CONDESCENDING ADULTS HANGING AROUND!"
Abby continued to sing at the top of her lungs as MichelAudrelo chased after her, his chains doing battle with her vines.
"I SAID STOP IT!!"
Abby ignored him, singing to her heart's content.
"EVERY GROAN, EVERY WAIL AND EACH MOAN, ADDS UP TO DADDY'S LEAVIN' ME THE HECK ALONE!"
"I SAID STOP! STOP, Stop, s-stop..."
MichelAudrelo's hands began to shake, his chains started to fade.
"THEY'RE OUT OF MY GRILL, BECAUSE OF THAT SHRILL SYMPHONY..."
Abby pirouetted, a glorious spin that created a flurry of petals around her. MichelAudrelo couldn't see her anymore, her spin was so fast that she became a blur. While he was distracted, a grappling hook shot up and grabbed him by the ankle, tugging him down to the floor as Ghost wrapped his arms around the boy.
"H-hey!! LET GO!!"
"It's okay, Angelo," Ghost murmured, keeping him close to his chest. "It's okay, we've got you..."
"AIN'T IT THE SWEETEST NOISE AROUND, THAT BEAUTIFUL SOUND!" Abby belted, echoing the final word as she jumped down from her podium made of vines.
"Aaaaaaand she sticks the landing!" she cheered as she gracefully touched down. "I did it! I really did it! I guess my leg's all better, I can't wait to show Diana--"
"YOU CAN'T KEEP ME PRISONER LIKE THIS!!" MichelAudrelo screeched, kicking and squirming in Ghost's hold. "LET ME GO!"
"Not until you calm down, kid," Ghost said, tightening his hold on the mind-controlled Angelo. "Just let it go, let go of the anger and the fear and--"
"NO! I'LL KILL YOU ALL! I'LL...I'll... I ... heh... heh, heh..."
MichelAudrelo's screams melted as tears started trickling down his face. He smiled painfully, laughing as he saw what he was.
"I... I wanted to kill everyone," he murmured. His voice was soft, he was in shock and somewhat dazed as the realization of what he'd done seeped in. "I really did. I wanted to break everything and destroy the entire arena and everyone in it... why?"
MichelAudrelo looked up at Abby, the small trickle of tears turning into rivers, his smile breaking as the corners of his mouth turned down.
"Why did I wanna hurt you so bad? I never would have done that before, I was just so... so..."
"Scared?" Abby offered, stepping forward to wipe the tears away.
"No," Angelo flinched, pulling back from her, refusing to accept her help. "No, it wasn’t fear, it was--"
"It was grief."
MichelAudrelo looked up in confusion at Ghost, who looked down with his own understanding gaze.
"You were scared of losing your family, huh? April told me a little about some of the things you said when you were first spored. I know what it feels like to lose your family. To know that you'll never get to do the things you always said you'd do together. See the places you always wanted to go. Win or lose the arguments you planned in your head for fun, just to antagonize them. Give that apology you meant to say. Make that special gift for their next birthday. Eat lunch with them. Say I love you one last time. I know how it feels to realize that you've been pulled away and there's no going back. And what's worse... you see them everywhere. Carbon copies, phantoms of the past that bring up phantom pains. You want to pretend that they're yours, but..."
"But they're not!" Angelo sobbed, letting his limbs go slack in Ghost's embrace as he wailed. The two fell to their knees, Ghost comforting Angelo as he cried out a pain that was so deep and scarring it could shake the foundations of the earth.
"But... your family isn't dead, Angelo," Abby reassured him. "They're still here --"
"FOR HOW LONG?" he howled. "How long until they really do get themselves killed?! How long until I have to go through this again, but for real?! I can't keep doing this!! I can't, I can't! I won't let myself get hurt again!!"
The blue light started to return to MichelAudrelo's eyes as he growled.
"That's what I said, too," Ghost chuckled.
Angie stopped.
"I told myself I would never get hurt like that again. So I shut everyone and everything out. I refused to let myself get too attached to what I knew could be another family for me. I couldn't face the idea of seeing replicas of my brothers and father and April again. I was scared of getting hurt."
Angelo swivelled his head around to get a better look at Ghost, who was starting to cry himself.
"I was so scared, kid. I let myself rot in a sewer alone for over two decades before I finally faced my fears and tried again. Knowing that the pain would come, knowing that I would have to be strong. Because sometimes... healing hurts."
"If you love someone, you have to understand that one day they will hurt you," Abby added. "Whether they mean to or not... love opens you up for both the happy times and the sad times. And the angry ones, too, believe me."
"It may seem like the pain is too much to live with --" Ghost replied, "-- and you may think that it's easier to feel nothing at all than to feel the pain. But when that happens you become nothing more than a... well, a ghost in a shell," he chuckled weakly.
"I don't want that," Angelo wept, turning around and wrapping his arms around Ghost in a loose hug. "I don't want to just rot inside myself while the people I love most are waiting for me..."
"Then you have to let go of that pain."
"But it's so hard!"
"I know, bud, I know. But nothing that the great Dr. Feelings can't face, right? And you'll never face it alone."
"I thought that was Dr. Delicate Touch... wait, what's the difference again?" Abby asked.
Angelo rubbed his face against Ghost's cloak, wiping the tears and snot from his blubbering face.
"Dr. Delicate Touch feels nothing... O-o.... okay..." he whimpered. "I can do this. I don't want to be 'Dr. Delicate Touch' forever. I wanna be with my family again. Even if we'll get hurt. I'd rather get hurt with them than feel nothing forever alone."
"Good call, kid," Ghost said, leisurely releasing the box turtle.
Angelo stood up, wiping the last of the glowing aqua blue tears from his face, his eyes back to normal as he weakly smiled.
"Should... should we go find the rest?"
"The Donnies are still doing their epic anime battle royale or something," Abby pointed. "But the others are in that pile of debris over there."
"Well, I've learned the hard way to never interrupt Dee's work, so let's go see how the other guys are doing."
"Another good call," Ghost laughed, rubbing Angelo's head.
The trio crossed over to the rest, reaching them just as Misa was released from the fear fungus' hold and hugging Raphael.
"Hey, guys! Look who we got!" Abby cheered, pointing at Angelo, who waved weakly at the group.
"Hey, Angelo!" Leon said with a wave. "You're not gonna... string me up again like before, are ya?"
"No," he whimpered softly. "Sorry 'bout that, by the way..."
"It's all cool," Leon said, waving it off. "Shrooms will do that to ya, or so I've heard."
Raphael looked over at his baby brother, seeing the tear stains and red puffy eyes and the trail of snot he kept wiping and sniffling away.
"Rough comeback, huh?"
"Yeah. You too?"
"Pizza supreme in the sky, you have no idea."
"Pizza what in the where now?" Leon asked, raising a brow at the snapping turtle. "What did you just say--"
"I'LL KILL YOU!!"
The group jumped at the scream that shattered the calm they had been enjoying for the moment.
"That was one of the Donnies!" Abby yiped, jumping into Diana's arms.
"...Do you think maybe we should look into that?" Leon asked.
rhg!Donnie had carried Michael into the outskirts of the battle, just as he'd promised. The Donnie confrontation, or 'Donfrontation' as they were calling it, was in full swing as the drones flew like a tornado around the halls.
"Okay, we're here now, what exactly did you have planned??" rhg!Donnie asked.
"Uh, I honestly figured I could wing it--"
"YOU WHAT?!"
Mikey shrugged and laughed nervously.
"Well, I assumed that I'd have a plan by the time I got here!"
Before rhg!Donnie could let in to him, an explosion went off. The bright rainbow of light blew away the spores and darkness, clearing the area almost instantaneously.
"Well, it looks like the guys managed to set off the TNT," Diana noticed.
"No kidding," rhg!Donnie grumbled. "We should get out of here--"
A large body flew into the wall some short distance aways.
"Was that Raph?!" Abby yelled loudly.
The halls started glittering as golden chains filled the air.
"I swear, that isn’t me," Mikey said, seeing the glare that the others were about to give him.
"It's the other Mikey!" Abby yelled, suddenly running off to go help the others.
"Wait a minute!" Diana shouted, running after her.
"Well, um, I guess it's just you and me now," Mikey chuckled dryly.
"Apparently so. I'm taking you back to safety--"
"No!" Mikey yelled, holding his hand out to stop him. "I need you to take me to my brothers, or --"
"No, Mikey, I can't let that happen! You'll get hurt, or--"
Before rhg!Donnie could finish his sentence, one of the drones snagged the back of his shirt and carried him away into the storm.
"Oh no! Human Donnie!!"
Mikey summoned a small chain and latched it onto one of the other drones, getting yanked away into the torrent along with the alternate version of his brother.
"I'm coming!"
Mikey held on as tightly as he could to the meager chain, climbing up the links to get to the drone itself. He climbed atop it, looking for rgh!Donnie amongst the flurry of purple. He found him, several feet away, trying to reach back and unhook his clothes from the device.
"Hold on, I'm on my way!!"
Mikey readied himself, and then leapt. His stomach slammed into the head of the drone, and he slipped down the side. Mikey swung his legs up, gripping the drone with his knees as he crawled back up the side of it. Mikey saw the legs of the drone dangling beneath him, and got an idea. He took out his nunchucks, wrapping one end to the drone's mechanical legs as he held on with a deathgrip to the other end. He let himself fall, dangling from the machine and swinging around as the drones turned the corner and continued their tornado patterns. Mikey used the momentum of the turning corner to fling himself forward, landing directly on top of the kidnapper drone.
"MIKEY?!" rhg!Donnie screamed above the roaring mechanical wind. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
"Winging it!" Mikey yelled back, as he grabbed rhg!Dee's shirt collar and tore the fabric from the metal limb. With nothing holding him up anymore, rhg!Donnie fell to the floor, dragging poor Michelangelo with him.
"AAAAAHHHH!!"
Before the two adolescents could hit the pavement, something caught them both. They looked up in shock to see two drones had chased after and grabbed them.
"Not again," rhg!Donnie groaned.
"I assure you, this time it was intentional," Omega said as he rolled by. "Congrats on being rescued."
"Thanks, computer Dee!" Mikey cheered, giving him a thumbs-up.
"Of course. Now, WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING HERE?! I thought you were given direct instruction to--"
"Where is everyone? Where's Leon, 'Phael, Dvd, and April?" Mikey interrupted.
"I suspect UIFY Leonardo, UIFY Raphael, and UIFY April are over by the remnants of that housing unit," Omega said, a robot claw pointing towards the heap of rubble caught in the explosion. "But your Donatello is in the center of that drone tornado. He's taken the forefront of distracting --"
"I gotta go talk to him!" Mikey yelled, trying to run but tripping over his own feet as he did so.
"No way!" rhg!Donnie said, grabbing him and dragging him back again. "You're staying over here, where it's safe!"
"I thought you were on my side!"
"I'm not on anybody's side. I just want you to be safe, Mikey," he said, the last few words coming out as a whimper. "Please... just stay here for me, I'll go and help!"
"BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!"
rhg!Donnie ran in the direction of the tornado, Omega chasing after him.
Mikey waited a beat.
And then began to shuffle towards them, too...
rhg!Donnie ducked in between each and every drone as they sailed around them. He listened for the shouts, for any noise other than the roaring wind whipping around him.
He couldn't hear anything.
He couldn't see anything--
"Hey! Watch out!"
rhg!Donnie jumped. Someone had grabbed him by the arm and pulled him aside. DvD stared the teenager in the face, glaring at him angrily.
"WHAT are YOU doing here?! You're supposed to be watching after--"
His eyes widened as he realized.
"WHERE. IS. HE."
"I left him with Omega!" rhg!Donnie shouted.
"OMEGA IS RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!"
rhg!Donnie turned around to stare the computer in the face -- or rather, icon.
"WHAT?! I THOUGHT YOU WERE WITH HIS BROTHER--"
"I came to make sure you would be --"
"Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute --" DvD stopped the explanation hastily, trying to figure it out. "-- if he's not with us, then who is he with?"
UIFY Mikey crawled across the floor as best he could. He was still wobbly, and every time he tried to stand he got the nastiest dizzy spell. The dizziness was only compounded by the continuing swirling of the mechanical hurricane before him. But he had to get to them, before it was too late...
"Well, well, well, what do we have here?"
Mikey paused, a pair of feet appearing in front of him. He slowly looked up to see AudreyTello standing before him, tech-bō in hand and pointed down at Michael.
"...Heyyyy, Dee... just the guy I wanted to see."
"You're supposed to be dead," AudreyTello said, leaning closer to him.
"Eh. I got better."
"So I see. Shall I remedy that for you?"
Mikey swallowed.
"You're not going to kill me."
"Oh? And why ever not?" AudreyTello chuckled, walking closer as Mikey inched backwards.
"Because we both know that you don't want to hurt me. You didn't hurt me before--"
"An oversight on my part. As I said, I can remedy that," AudreyTello growled, as he cocked back the bō and prepared to strike.
"No. Before the battle. When I helped you, when I gave you some of my strength to fight against the fungus, I could feel what was happening to you. I don't know how or why, but I could sense that you were being sorta... swept away. But not gone for good."
"You're wrong," AudreyTello laughed. "Donatello is DEAD."
"No," Mikey refuted. "I made sure of it. I know you're in there, I know you can see and hear me. That's why you gave me back to DvD when you did."
"You were unconscious for that, how... ah, yes. Your odd little dreams that fill you in on what you've missed," AudreyTello rolled his eyes. "How useful."
"You didn't want to hurt me," Mikey informed him. "Because you're still in there."
"No, he's NOT," AudreyTello growled.
"I know you are. It's why you wouldn't kill me. Why I couldn't kill you. Because you care."
"DONATELLO IS DEAD!!" AudreyTello snapped. "I AM IN CONTROL, YOU HEAR ME?!"
"You can scream all you want, but we both know that isn't true."
"BUT IT HAS TO BE!" Dee sobbed. "IT HAS TO BE TRUE, OTHERWISE... otherwise, I really did all those terrible things to you... your brother... m-my brothers..."
NFIF Donatello's knees started wobbling. He backed away from Mikey.
"I know you're scared. You're probably thinking everything that happened is all your fault, right? You're blaming yourself. The hand told me..."
"No... No, NO! S-STAY BACK!" AudreyTello shrieked, fumbling away from Mikey, who started crawling back towards him.
"You're scared that what you've done is unredeemable, that the mistakes you made will haunt you forever. But that's only true if you let it be true. Because -- whether you want it or not -- I forgive you for everything that happened."
"No, you can't -- Don't say that!" Donatello wept, holding his staff at Mikey, trying to ward him off as though he were a wild animal. "You can't just forgive that, you can't simply forgive him, he tried to spore you! He -- I almost sent you to your doom, I did send you to your doom! MY spores killed you!!"
"Do I look like I'm dead to you? Like I said, you wouldn't hurt me. You didn't know that would happen, it was a freak accident or whatever. And even if you did mean for that to happen... I still forgive you."
"BUT YOU CAN'T--!"
"But I do anyways. Because you're my brother, Dee," Mikey said with a smile, slowly getting up to his feet to stand.
"I-I'm not... I'm not your brother... especially after what I did..."
The tornado of drones behind them started to slow to a lull. The roaring cyclone and whipping wind calming to a gentle breeze in the background.
Mikey smiled at the weeping Donatello. He crawled closer.
"...But I still choose you as my family. And I still forgive you. And your real brothers will, too, because they love you so much more than I ever could! Donnie, do you know how much you are loved? How much we care about you?"
"No... you can't... stop it, stop, please..."
"We all love you so much, nothing you could ever do would make that love go away. No mistake, no failure, no evil monologue could ever make our love for you just simply vanish! We'll fight for you, we'll die for you, we'll live for you, because we love you so much."
"I don't deserve it... please, you can't say that! I don't want your love! I don't want you to keep loving me after everything, I don't deserve it!! I haven't earned it!!"
"You don't have to earn or deserve it, Dee," Mikey said, taking shaky steps towards him.
"Stop, Mikey, st-o-o-p..." Donnie wrapped his arms around himself, clutching his stomach as the alt. version of his baby brother came closer, holding his arms out to hug him.
"It's like Karai always says... anatawa, hitorijin--"
"I'LL KILL YOU!!"
Mikey whirled around just in time to see DvD leap over him, tech-bōfurnished with a saw as he lunged towards his enemy.
DvD crashed into NFIF Donatello, the two rolling around and scuffling on the floor as DvD attempted to avenge his brother.
"No!! Get off of him, what are you doing?! I was just getting through to him!!"
"I'M GOING TO KILL HIM FOR WHAT HE DID TO YOU!!" Donatello Von Draxum screamed.
AudreyTello kicked him off his stomach, tumbling to the side and watching in pure fear as DvD readied his tech bo again. Mikey jumped onto him, clutching his arm tightly as he tried to pull him away.
"Please, this isn't you!!" he begged.
DvD shook his baby brother off, the small child falling to the ground from the exertion and watched in horror as his big brother stormed over to the swayed Donnie.
"You're forgetting, Mikey... I'm the son of Draxum! I never asked to be... but I'm the SON OF DRAXUM, now face my..."
DvD pressed a button on his tech-bō, and it began to glow green as a new and yet unused weapon formed at the end.
"...URANIUM-POWERED FURYYYYY!!!"
"DVD, NO!!!"
Mikey screamed, his wails just barely stopping DvD in his tracks.
"AFTER EVERYTHING HE DID TO YOU... I PROMISED NOTHING WOULD HURT YOU, I SWORE TO PROTECT YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE! MIKEY, WHAT ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?!"
"You can't hurt him!!" Mikey screamed. "He's YOU! He's my brother, just like you are!! He didn't mean to hurt anyone, I won't let you destroy your soul on my behalf! I won't let you hurt him!"
"...N-no... he's right..."
Mikey stared at NFIF Donatello, as he shakily looked up at the two arguing brothers.
"He should kill me... I deserve it..."
DvD glared at him.
"I TRUSTED you. I told you things about me, about Mikey, and you USE THAT AGAINST ME. The last person who did that --"
"I know," Dee wept. "I know. And you're right... after everything that happened, I don't blame you... I'd do the same. So... s-so go ahead," he cried, hanging his head in shame and resignation. "Do what you want. I did this, I did this to myself. I'm... I'm a monster.
DvD gripped his staff tightly. He took one step forward.
"No, please, don't do this," Michael begged. "Please, there's no coming back from this! Don't --"
"But Mikey, what am I supposed to do?" DvD growled, hot and angry tears filling up behind his visor.
"Forgive and forget."
"But he--"
"KILLING HIM WON'T MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF, DVD," Mikey scolded. "I KNOW YOU THINK IT'S YOUR FAULT. I KNOW YOU THINK THAT IT WAS YOUR FAULT BECAUSE YOU LET YOUR GUARD DOWN. IT'S NOT. PLEASE, Please, please..."
Mikey sobbed as he tugged on his brother's cape.
"Don't do it... don't do this, not for me. It won't heal anything..."
Before DvD could respond, the others suddenly came running from every direction towards them, Leon and 'Phael lunged at DvD to pull him back as April and Karai went for Mikey. rhg!Donnie and Omega came running from behind and joined the UIFY gang to Keep DvD at bay, while the rest of the group went to check on NFIF Donatello, who was shaking and sobbing blue tears.
"Get back, Don!" 'Phael yelled, using all his strength to keep his warrior brother away. "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!"
"He... I... Mikey was..."
"AND JUST WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, MISTER?!" Leon shouted at Michael. "I told you to stay put!"
"I had to help! I knew that Donnie was gonna blame himself and Donnie was gonna try to kill him and the other Donnies wouldn't understand and Donnie needed me so I--"
"I told you to stay--"
"CAN WE PLEASE TURN OFF THE DEATH RAY?!" April shouted loudly over the commotion.
"Oh, right," 'Phael said, snatching the tech-bō away from DvD. Omega came over and helped him to find the right button to switch it off before it could do any real damage.
"How does this child have uranium?!" Omega asked angrily. "Where did he--"
"We can geek out over Donnie's collection of killer rocks later, right now we're kinda on mission?!"
"Oh. Right. Yes, of course..." Omega said sheepishly.
NFIF Raph was by his brother's side almost immediately, taking his hand and trying to soothe him.
"Donnie! Donnie, it's Raph... it's me, can you--"
"R-Raph?" Dee asked looking at him.
"Yeah! C'mon, you're still kinda under the influence of the spores, so I need ya to--"
"You should have let him finish me," Donnie sobbed. "I deserve it!"
"Deserve...? Donald, what are you talking about?" Angelo asked nervously.
"I... I hurt you all!" he wailed. "I keep hurting you, I keep -- I keep ruining -- I'm a villain, I'm a monster, I--"
"HEY."
Dee jerked at the deep rumble that came from his older brother. He turned to look at Raphael.
"No. You are not a villain, you are not a monster. You were stuck in a nightmare and your body was being used like a puppet. You are not to blame for what happened."
"B-but...!"
"Donnie. You were krangified."
Dee froze at the words.
He knew this argument. He was on the other side of it, now...
"If you truly believe that what you did was actually your fault, and that you really are to blame, then you're also saying that it was really me that almost killed--"
"NO!" Dee yelled, gripping his brother's arms tightly to keep him from finishing the thought. "NO! No, I would never say that, I -- it was different, you were -- you -- you weren't yourself at all, they made you into -- it's different this time!"
"How is it any different?"
"BECAUSE THIS TIME IT WAS ME!!" he howled. "YOU DIDN'T DO ANY OF THAT, YOU WEREN'T IN CONTROL--"
"Neither were you!" Angelo reminded him.
"But I--"
"You should hold yourself to the same standards of forgiveness you give to others," Raph said. "I know you feel like you're on some different level of mercy, that the mistakes of others don't matter as much as the mistakes you make, that you should be punished for every little thing you get wrong -- but that's ludicrous. Really, really ludicrous."
"T-two reallys..."
"Exactly, big man. With as big of a genius brain as yours, ya'd think you'd understand that, huh?"
Dee chuckled as he hugged his brothers. The blue glow from his birthmarks slowly faded away, revealing the purple tones underneath.
"You back with us, Don-a-Tron?"
Donnie nodded and mumbled a "mhm" at them.
"Good. Welcome home, Donnie."
"Not yet," he said, slowly pushing himself away as he remembered a crucial detail.
"We still have one last zombie to free..."
"You.... you've destroyed EVERYTHING......"
Every head simultaneously turned.
LeonAudro pulled himself out of the rubble and ruin, rising up to confront them.
He was thin and pale, one eye burning blue while the other was covered with the charred and scarred remains of a mushroom cap and gill, one singular glowing yellow eye gazing furiously at them. His body was veiled over with roots and vines and ring and stem and stalk. Toadstools grew over his shoulder, umbrella mushrooms had sprouted from his plastron.
Raph gasped in horror at how similar he looked to... to... him. When he was part of the kraang.
Angelo covered his mouth to keep from gasping and sobbing.
Donnie stared in silence, his hands curling into tight fists.
"... Don't... be... fooled if I should whimper like a sappy, sobby dope, it's just the spores... they get me low......"
He lumbered lazily towards them. His voice was weak, but in the silence it carried. His breathing was shallow and strained. His face was absolutely painted with the glowing blue tearstains.
"... But don't let my cries deceive you, any moment I could go....."
Angelo whimpered at that verse. He felt Raph grab him by the shoulders and pull him in. Donnie took his hand and squuezed it tight.
"...All my vital signs are failing... cause the fungus I'm inhaling... makes it difficult as heck to catch my bre-ha-heaaaaath...."
He wheezed as he sang, his movements laboured and exhausted.
His brothers watched him, frozen where they were as he continued on closer. And closer.
"...Leo...?"
LeonAudro smiled.
"Guess again."
"Audrey III," Dee snarled. "Let him go."
LeonAudro let out an airy chuckle.
"Why... should... I?"
"LET HIM GO!!" Angelo screamed, his hands igniting into flames for a split second.
“Wow, Miguel. Did someone lose their temper?" LeonAudro gave a wicked smile. "What happened to always thinking positively? All you did was hurt that other April and Karai instead! You tore a family apart! How are you supposed to bring us together when you’re just a violent, blood thirsty, anger filled husk!?"
Angelo's eyes widened. He felt Raph's grip on his shoulders tense. LeonAudro's head tilted to the side as he continued.
"I’ll never feel safe around you again. I bet once April hears what you did she’ll never even come back to the lair. Who knows what you’re capable of now?”
"Stop it," Raph growled. "Leo would never say those things about--"
“Raph, is it easy for you to show your scarred up face to me again when you’ve failed so miserably?" LaonAudro stated, stepping closer to shorten the distance between them all. "Not just now, but again and again and again. How many times will you let me be lost? Injured? Scared? What kind of leader lets his team go on alone? What kind of brother cares so little that I can be missing for so long that this happens!?"
"I... you..."
"You said you’d always protect me!" LeonAudro continued. "You lied! Is this because I’m better than you? Are you punishing me? You want to hurt me? Again?”
"HE SAID STOP IT!" Donnie shouted, standing up definitely against the spore-infected brother before him.
LeonAudro turned his head to peer at his twin.
“And you. You think you're any better?? Your tech was useless, Donnie. Again. Knowing I’m twins with someone who can’t, not even once, save someone he cares about with the only thing he’s good at makes me sick! Maybe you don’t actually care? I bet you’d be fine if I just croaked here and now! You might even like it! I bet you enjoyed getting to play your little villain role because you could hurt us without any consequences! You’re an emotionless, selfish, annoying little freak who wishes he could be normal!”
Donnie's tech-bō materialized a drill in his hands.
"Just because you're using him to say these things doesn't mean it's Leo. We're taking him back. NOW."
LeonAudro sighed glumly.
"It's too late for that, I'm afraid."
"No!" Angelo shouted "We're saving him!!"
LeonAudro somberly lifted his arms up to gesture to the weak and frail body he possessed.
"Look at me, Angie... what is there left to save?? Am I still really worth it to you? Be realistic, I'm better off dead."
"Leo would NEVER say that!" Raph protested.
"You don't know your brother at all..."
LeonAudro gave a weak and meager grin at the boys, his legs nearly giving out beneath him as he struggled to stay upright.
"He's long gone... he really is. Funny, how the spores turned you all into the opposite of who you are... Raphael became a pathetic little worm, willing to give up so easily. Michelangelo became a destroyer, a hate-filled wretch. Donatello couldn't wait to cause the pain of others, to ruin them, to--"
"YOU DID THAT!" Donnie yelled. "That was your twisted vision of us!"
"...And Leonardo. What a poor, unfortunate soul... who would have thought someone so full of hope and endurances could be broken so quickly?"
Raph growled. LeonAudro tilted his head back and grinned wide, licking his lips. The pain tasted so sweet.
"But in the end, he gave up much faster than I expected. Because, he really is just a worthless, wantless, 'WRETCHED LITTLE PEST'."
"NO!" Angie screamed, Raphael having to hold him back from attacking the fungus that covered his brother. "Don't you DARE say that about him!! Leo is still in there! He survived once, we can--"
"ARE YOU DUMB?!" LeonAudro screamed at them, causing everybody to jump back. "OR HARD OF HEARING? OR RELIEVED MY END IS NEARING? ARE YOU SATISFIED?! I SCARED MYSELF TO--"
"NO!!!"
LeonAudro's eyes rolled back, his legs gave out from underneath him.
Raph's hologram arms reached out instantly, catching him and carrying him to them.
"Leo! Leo, wake up, wake up!!" Angelo sobbed, shaking his brother frantically. Donnie grabbed his wrists and yanked him away.
"Angelo, stop, don't shake him like that--"
"But he won't wake up!!"
"He's been weakened by the mushroom," Karai interjected, coming to kneel besides them all. "He doesn't have much time left."
"Well then what do we do?!" Raph sobbed.
"He is still a prisoner of fear," she said sadly, placing the back of her hand against the exposed portion of Leo's forehead, checking for fever. Instead he felt cold, his body shivering and his breaths shuddering. They were getting slower and slower...
"You will need to help free him from the fungus' hold."
"How?!" Angie asked, clinging tightly to Leo's limp hand.
"I can help take you into his nightmare," Karai said. "You can confront him and his fears once you are inside his subconscious."
The boys nodded, each one taking Leo's hand and squeezing tightly as Karai focused on NFIF Leo...
The boys eyes started to glow their signature colours...
They each fell over, lying beside Leonardo on the floor.
Raphael opened his eyes to find himself floating in an empty void.
Well, almost empty.
It was empty in the sense that there were no living beings here. Just debris, wreckage from ginormous mechas and spaceships that were the size of moons. Shards of broken ground and platforms floated about them. There was an odd, twisted version of gravity. Unless you were within five feet of the 'ground', you were basically weightless and could fly around wherever. There was minimal light, and no real source for it. It just sort of faded in and out mysteriously. Though, there were some sharp red pin lights coming from the useless kraang prime suits and ships.
It was cold, here, too. Cold like in the dark room with the --
Yeah. Cold.
Angelo was beside him, as was Dee. He hadn't noticed them at first, the loneliness in this vast empty space was suffocating. He felt like he was going to choke on it.
"Look, there!" Angelo gasped, though in this space his voice carried and echoed so much it was almost a shout.
Angie pointed off into the distance where a single speck of green and blue floated alone. They could hear the faintest weeps coming from it.
"It's Leo!!"
"How do we get to him?" Raph asked, squinting and peering as best he could. His damaged eye was not doing him any favours right now...
"I've got it covered," Donnie said with a grin, grabbing onto Raph's shell. "Oh Raphala, do hang on to Angelo for us, please."
Raph hugged his brother to his chest. Donatello's ninpo activated, creating a huge jetpack that was twice their cumulative size, and the trio blasted off to save their brother from this duplicate prison dimension.
"We're almost there!" Angelo shouted.
"Great, how do we slow down?!" Donnie yelled back.
"YOU DON'T KNOW HOW??"
"In case you haven't noticed, Angelo, this place doesn't exactly follow the typical rules of physics! Unless there's something to slow our accelerated direction, we'll just keep going forever!"
"Raph's got it!" Raphael called out, his ninpo creating a gigantic arm and grabbing onto the broken down ship hull that was just in front of them.
The trio slid down, Angelo using his chains to keep them levitated around their team leader as he drifted motionless, his three brothers surrounding him. They didn't notice the deep dark circles under his eyes, the wounds covering his body, the tearstains that seemed to have been made a permanent addition to his face, the tattered and chipped sword with the dented hilt wrapped in weathered and worn masks, each mask a different but familiar colour... They were just relieved to see him still somewhat alive.
"Leo? Leo, we're here to rescue you--"
Raph had started to reach out for him, but before he could touch his shell the masks tied to the sword suddenly flew at him, transforming into apparitions that haunted the slider, growling and snarling at Raphael, keeping him away.
"GAAH! What the--?! Now there's ghosts? Who's the creepy old guy?"
The ghouls circled around Leonardo. They seemed to be guarding Leo from outsiders... Angelo recognized the fine halo of colour that surrounded them as they circled about him like vultures. One red: large and bulky and missing an eye, the spines on his shell were singed and the entire front of him was burned and scarred beyond recognition; the second purple: a thick shield over his back and broken goggles that covered his damaged face; the last one orange: balding with liver spots and a massive cape that flowed behind him, his hands shattered like glass as remnants and shards of him followed behind as he circled Leonardo, who pressed the sword closer to his chest. Angie swallowed, a sick feeling growing in his stomach.
"I... I think those ghosts are..."
"R-Raph..."
Leo slowly turned to gaze back at Raphael. Tears were pouring down his cheeks.
"Leo! Tell your futuristic guard dogs that we're friendly!"
Leo hiccupped sobs as he watched them.
"I... can't control them..."
"Then we'll find a way through!" Dee yelled, readying his bō staff.
"Th-they're not here to trap me..." he whimpered. "They're here to protect you..."
"Protect us? From what?"
"...Me..."
Leo hugged the sword as tightly as he could, as if it were everything he'd lost in the world.
"They all died saving me. Protecting me. Following my orders. Heck, I actually TOLD Mikey to sacrifice himself! Look what I did to them. What I'll eventually do to you, too..."
Leo curled up tighter into himself, clutching the sword. It's edges were dull, the shine lost ages ago, scuffed and marked and dirty and unloved. Like him. Just like him...
"They hate me, and I deserve it..."
Raph could hear the voices... soft echoes that were earworms, whispering breaths that had their voices plastered onto them, but altered -- gruffer, older, deeper, more strained with time and trauma.
"...it hurts, leo..."
"...you were supposed to protect us, leo..."
"...why did we have to do it instead, leo..?"
With every word, Leo's light began to dim, the colour in his skin and birthmarks faded and became desaturated. With every utterance, his grip on the sword loosened. He was fading away...
Raphael sucker-punched the ghost of his future bad timeline self in the face, sending him reeling back as the ghouls screeched in response. Raph screamed back at them.
"Stop talking about my brother that way!! I would never, ever say those things!"
The two other ghosts lunged at him, but were no match for the younger flesh-and-blood counterparts. Donnie swung his bō at his future phantom, smacking it into the side of its head and sending it careening into the distance. Angelo had his chains swirl around the eldery version of himself and -- with a flick of the wrist -- sent the geezer spiraling into oblivion.
Raphael jumped to Leon and clung to him as firmly as possible.
"Leo. I need you to listen to me, because I'm only ever going to be able to tell this to you once. I never told anyone this, not you or our bros or pops or April or Casey Jr. or anybody. Not even my teddy bears or Princess Peach figurine. So you'd better pay close attention to this confession."
Raph took in a deep breath. He knew Donnie and Angie were listening too. Good. They all might as well hear it, he definitely did not plan to ever bring it up again.
"...When I was part of the kraang -- particularly when I was fighting you -- the kraang tricked me. They'd tricked me before, they'd made me think that I was coming to save you after I'd managed to escape them, They made me think I'd come home... but it was a trick. A dream."
"That was how they found the lair..." Donnie muttered to himself.
"Yeah, well... when I was in the technodrome... when you came to rescue me, and we fought... the kraang did it again. I thought... I thought everyone was dead. Mikey and Donnie were on the floor, they were skewered and bleeding and dead and... and you were in front of me, begging me to save you. A kraang monster or something had you in its grip, and I tried to -- it kept fighting me, every time I went to save you. I was going to kill it to rescue you, I... I didn't realize until after we got home, and you guys explained everything to me -- it was you I was fighting."
Leo ugly sobbed, his face scrunching up as he wrapped his limbs all around Raphael, just like how he used to when he was a kid and needed as much love as he could receive from his big brother. Raph held him closely and rocked him back and forth, giving long gentle strokes down from the top of his head to the middle of his shell.
"B-b-b-but it w-was MY fault that y-you were, were--!" Leo blubbered, Raph interrupting his wails to continue.
“From the moment I knew I had brothers, I knew I would do anything to protect you no matter what you did! You want to know what I really hate about you, Leo!? It’s that you think we don’t like you! We love you. Always have, always will. So stop being dumb and let us help you!”
"Raph's right!" Angelo said, coming close and cupping Leo's stained cheek and giving him his signature sunshine smile. "Even if we died in some other future, and even if it was for you, that was what we decided! If we didn’t do it for you then it would probably have been anyone else in the family! And it’s not because we don’t care about ourselves, it’s because we’ll always take care of each other!”
“I have never, ever known a world without you and I don’t want to!" Donnie added, taking his hand. "If you know how I die then….I would have hoped it was next to you. I hope it was you telling some dumb story or telling a terrible joke! If you don’t want me to die so badly, think about how much I don’t want you to! But that’s what you’re doing! Do not die on me Leo!….Please.” Donnie begs.
Leo's eyes brightened, the colour slowly coming back to his face, the sickly blue in his eyes dripping away as it was replaced, not only by his true blue, but by a mixture of red, orange, and purple. The crescents along his arms and around his eyes began to glow, as did the birthmarks on his brothers.
It was familiar, seeing the light shine in this desolate and lonely place.
But not so lonely anymore...
Leo's eyes slowly opened.
The real world hurt and ached. The arena compound's lights burned his retinas, the sounds and cries deafened him, the warm touch from every hand that reached out for him burned his chilled and slightly feverish skin. Something was pulled from his face -- it had been stuck to his mask and skin but relented in the end, falling off with ease; the roots and mycelium threads gently slipping out of his epidermis. Out of the corner of his blurry vision, he saw UIFY Donnie take the last remnants of the mushroom and disintegrate it with some kind of death ray... good.
Leo barely registered that his brothers were holding him, clutching him close to them and saying loving things to him, trying to get him to respond as proof that he was back with them. Proof he was alive. Not just breathing, but alive. Because when you're a prisoner of fear, you're basically walking dead. And Leo was so tired of being dead in himself. He wanted to live again...
Leo managed a smile to let them know he was alright.
And he fell asleep... with no nightmares.
When Leo awoke again, he was in the medbay. His head was bandaged, and an IV was stuck into his thin and emaciated arm. Raphael was snoring by his bedside, holding his hand in his sleep as he drooled onto the mattress. Dee was reading an article on his tablet in the corner, while Angelo was fidgeting with his wrappings and looking over the new collection of scars he'd gotten.
"...Heyyyy, guys, when's the entr'acte?" Leo joked.
Somehow immediately Raph's head shot up as he snorted awake.
"Snrrk--! Leo? LEO!!"
Raphael wrapped his arms around him in a bear hug, crying into his shoulders as Leo tried to convince him that he was okay. Donnie and Angie joined in soon, with Donnie taking the opposite side of the bed and Angelo simply jumping up onto the mattress and flattening his bedridden bro.
After ten minutes of wholesome crying between the four of them, inspecting each others' injuries and coming upon the decision that they were all lucky to be alive, they calmed down and brought up an important conversation.
"So... we're leaving now, right?" Leo asked, looking around the room for any objections. It was an awkward silence he got instead.
"I mean, it's for the best, right?"
"I think so," Donnie sighed. "We've caused enough trouble already."
"And we lost the contest, anyhow," Raph added. "There's... no real reason to stay."
"I would have liked to say goodbye to everyone, though," Angelo sighed. "But... after everything that happened... maybe you're right. A quiet exit is probably best." He gave an airy chuckle. "In any case, I'm honestly too emotionally exhausted to even try a conversation with anyone."
"We can leave a written apology," Dee offered.
"Good idea," Leo said with a fragile smile. "Let's go."
The four took a small piece of paper and wrote down their apologies to everyone. Leo cried during his portion. Donatello snapped his pencil tip during his. Angelo couldn't find the right words and ended up doing a fourth and fifth draft before Raph finally told him he was done. Raph's section of the note was long and overly poetic, but truly heartfelt.
They left the note on the pillow, and silently left the room.
"Do you even know which way the exit is?" Dee asked.
"No, but I'm pretty sure it's around here somewhere..." Leo replied, as he turned his head around every corner.
"You'd think a med ward would have better signage!" Raph bemoaned softly.
"Look, there it is!" Angelo said, dragging the others to a doorway.
The doors swung open.
"Great, now we can escape without anybody--"
The crowd cheered.
The four boys were stopped in their tracks as an enormous crowd of people with signs and posters and gifts came and shouted their names. For a moment, Leo clutched his katanas and prepared to fight them all before realizing this wasn't an angry mob.
"Guys! Look! It's NO FUN IN FUNGUS!!!"
"They're okay!"
"Thank you for saving us!!"
"You guys are the best!"
"Hey, I know that team!"
"Way to go, you guys!!"
Everyone was here...
rhg!Donnie stood with Ghost, smiling and clapping along with the rest. Ghost gave them a thumbs up. Abby and Diana were screaming cheering their heads off, their universe's Huginn and Munnin wearing tiny t-shirts that had the phrase 'I survived the great Spore Invasion of 2024' scribbled onto them. The Spider-Teetlez were shouting and screaming, Slider-Punk playing celebratory music on his guitar. The mods and employees were here too, ecstatic over the grand victory that they had made, and the fact that they were okay and alive. Even the void brothers were also there, grumpy but willing to let bygones be bygones. Especially after they'd had the effects of the fungus' control over them, they understood what it could make you do.
The entire competition was here.
The teens stared in awe. Leo had started to cry again.
They... they were happy for them?
Happy that they were okay? No one blamed them? No one was angry, no one was bitter, they were simply thankful for their recovery?? They were cheering them on, despite the fact that not 5 hours ago they had almost doomed them all...
But nobody cared about that. Thank Pizza SUPREME.
They just cared that they were okay.
Leonardo smiled.
Raph nudged him forward.
"Well, face-man?" he asked, smiling down at him. "What do we do now?"
Leo chuckled.
"...I guess it wouldn't hurt to stay for a little while longer...!"
And that is that.
They are safe. Leo knows it was not his fault, it was not his blame. They are all returned to each other, the spores destroyed completely. Or, at least until another author chooses to use an ask. And the UIFY family is also resting comfortably, back in the medbay yet again.
Everyone is safe and sound.
Even I. The Hand.PNG.
You didn't truly think I was gone for good, did you?
No, of course not!
Ah well, their crossover is completed. They may join together at some other time, but until that moment comes, I think they deserve a good rest, now that their task is complete.
And mine as well. I wonder what I shall do now... I'm sure the authors will find some way for me to have fun with them again. I do so love being in their stories.
However, there is one last thing I must do, though it pains me to do it...
The Until I Found You AU cannot remember this final battle. I'm sorry, I know. But they simply cannot. They are not ready to understand the concept of the Authors, nor their ninpo. Especially their ninpo. It isn't their time. They aren't meant to know these things yet. But soon... Someday, perhaps they will be allowed to recall all they did, but until then they must forget their feats... and forget me, as well. I shall become a shadow of a memory. Ah, but it isn't too sad! Most of them probably wish they could forget me! And I don't blame them. It was quite a run I had, eh? Quite a story we told.
And yet, there is one last part of the story left to tell...
UIFY Mikey woke up somewhat groggily from a strange dream. He wasn't sure how he got here, in the medbay... he could remember... getting spored in the lounge area... but... not much after. There were vague recollections of a battle... an explosion... versions of his family... but nothing solid, nothing that wasn't a fuzzy blur and left him with a woozy spell when he tried to think about it a little too hard.
Oh well. If he couldn't remember it, then it probably wasn't worth remembering!
He was downright exhausted, though. He felt like he could sleep for an eternity or two.
The only reason he'd woken up in the first place was because of someone... humming....
"...With every job when it's complete, there is a sense of bittersweet... That moment when you know the task is done..."
Mikey groggily opened his eyes to look over at the singing lady. She must've been a mod, or an employee, or a nurse or something. She was human, wearing an oversized denim jacket and tiny pale lavender flowers and petals in her messy hair. She was placing a small tray of water and crackers, plus a tiny bouquet of bright yellow daffodils on the bedside table.
"...Though in your heart you'd like to stay, to help things on their way... You've always known... They must do it alone..."
The lady turned to smile at him.
"Sorry, did I wake you?"
"Um, no, not really," Mikey lied.
"How are you doing?" she asked, checking his hands to make sure they were alright. Her fingers traced over each scar and blemish... an impressive feat, considering Mikey's bandages covered them and she couldn't have seen the marks.
"I'm alright," he yawned. "A little... woozy..."
"I understand wholly. Here, have some water..."
She gave the cup to Mikey, who slurped it down. Mikey thought her hands looked familiar... he wasn't sure why, though. But something about how real they were...
"Thanks..." he gulped, having downed the entire glass.
"No probbles. I just wanted to take a quick moment and make sure you were doing well!"
"I'm okay," Mikey chuckled. "Are my families... is the NFIF team okay? Did we save em?"
"Yes, they're all present and accounted for," she said with a grin. They're just in the other room. I think the med ward should be releasing you all soon... You deserve a big respite, I think. You've done a lot. Oh yeh, I also wanted to quick tell you something!"
"Tell me something?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.
"Yep! I wanted to let you know how important you are."
"Me?" Mikey laughed, wondering what this was about. "Important??"
"Oh yeah! Mhm! I know you sometimes feel like your personal story isn't glamorous, or that you might not be so impressive, or that others are doing better than you. But you should know how wonderful and amazing you are. Did you know, people talk all the time about how inspiring and relatable you are! And I just think that's wonderful."
"You make it sound like I'm a character in a story!" Mikey laughed.
"Well, we're all kind of like the main character of our own stories, aren't we?" she beamed.
"I never thought about it like that, actually," Mike hummed, tapping his chin. "What do you think your character's purpose is about?"
She paused, not expecting that query. Her eyes darted upwards, reflecting the light against the green and amber gold that speckled her irises, and bouncing off of her cheeks with white radiance. She pondered the question for a second before smiling brightly.
"I'd say prolly the same as yours," she stated. "I think I'm meant to inspire."
She laughed afterwards.
"Or at least, I hope I inspired somebody! Anywhoser, I'd better let you get back to your rest," the girl sighed, a sort of melancholic exhale that said she'd rather stay longer, but had to go.
"Oh, okay!" Mikey yawned, snuggling deeper under his blankets. He thought about going to see the guys before they left...
"See you around," the girl said as she walked away....
Mikey wondered who the human girl was, if not a nurse. She wasn't dressed like a nurse. Maybe she belonged to an AU... Ah, well. Maybe he would see her again one of these days.
Boots waited outside the medbay for their 'accomplice'. She'd wanted to make a dramatic exit and say 'hello' -- or rather, 'goodbye'. For now.
The competition was so nice in the calm and quiet aftermath. Tiny turtle tots giggled as they chased one another for their games. Parent versions of Leo and Donnie and Mikey and Raph and Cassandra and everyone else meandered about with their wards. A water fountain nearby trickled. The sweet scent of chocolate cake pops filled the air. As Boots waited, they pulled out a few stickers and decorated a scrapbook they'd brought with them. A mushroom sticker was placed on an electric blue sheet of paper. Boots enjoyed the peace... they hoped it would last for a little while. At least, until the next story came into play. Speaking of, out from the medbay frollocked the self-proclaimed weird kid author, smiling happily.
"All good?" Boots asked.
"All good," Pheebs responded, her denim jacket bouncing along with every skip she took. "They're all sleeping, now."
"I'm glad you got to see them; I wouldn't even dare to see my guys after what happened," Boots laughed.
"You wouldn't have to say who you were," Pheebs clarified. "I mean, it's not like they know what you look like."
"True, but even still, it'd freak me out too much and I'd end up spilling some of the beans!"
Pheebs laughed at that.
"I guess... anyways, shall we go?"
"I'm ready if you are," Boots sighed, folding up the scrapbook supplies and tucking it away. "Our guys deserve a good long rest..."
"Yeah. Though..."
"Though?"
"...I think I have one last moment I want to include."

[ENG] Revue Starlight -The LIVE- #4 Climax Pamphlet Interview
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy 6th anniversary to Revue Starlight! I managed to finish translating this interview just in time. Among other fun things, the cast of #4 left a message to each of their characters, and it's very sweet :') Translation under the cut.
Q.1
What do you think the highlight of this play is?
Mimori Suzuko: The brilliance of youth. The anxiety and anticipation of facing the future with graduation just around the corner! This world is huge, so do your best! Don't give up, Stage Girls! Without realizing it, you'll end up wanting to encourage them like that... for sure!
Kadoyama Yoko: After all, it's the Revue. It'll light a fire in the hearts of everyone who has watched and supported the plays up until now, without a doubt!
Ozaki Yuka: The theme is "Climax", so each of the Stage Girls must choose their own futures and part ways with their friends, and personally, I can relate to a lot of the feelings they're going through. Plus, there are interactions between members of the three schools of Seisho, Siegfeld, and Seiran that we haven't seen yet, so it'd be great if you paid attention to that.
Tomita Maho: It's "Climax", so there are a lot of moments that make you feel nostalgic. Please look forward to it! (laughs)
Iwata Haruki: Everyone's different paths! The different thoughts everyone's having with graduation just up ahead... and the Revue this time sure is a sight to see!!
Ikuta Teru: For Futaba, the highlight is that I'm using the most physical strength so far this time...! We're renewing the standard of what makes you feel like "there's no way Starlight can surpass this", and it's really difficult, but I'm able to feel the growth Futaba and I are experiencing together each time we practice, so every day is really fulfilling. I'll charge through with a fighting spirit!!!
Koizumi Moeka: Just like the title, it's loaded with a feeling of "Climax"! In #4, what will the Stage Girls fight against, and how will they overcome it? And there's maybe a Revue that will hit hard for the people who know about the plays so far...?
Q.2
Please tell us about your favorite song or line from the Starlight stage plays so far, as well as any related memories!
Koyama Momoyo: "Gunjou [Ultramarine]" from #2 is super super cool! It's so beautiful!!! Oh... Karen didn't sing in it, but... I watched over everyone from the back during every performance! I remember just itching to join in.
Koizumi Moeka: Through the words I said to Hisame-chan in #2, "It'll be colorful as always", I learned about Nana-chan's middle school days, and it gave me an opportunity to think once more about how Nana felt when she went to Seisho. She loves everyone in Seisho, but she also loves Hisame-chan, who she met in middle school.
Tomita Maho: I think it'd be "3・7・5・1・0", which we sang every time. When I hear it, it makes me feel like, "Stage Starlight is starting!"
Ozaki Yuka: "Grand Symphony", the curtain call song for Siegfeld's first stage play. During each performance, when all of our eyes met, everyone's expressions were brilliant, and I can't forget that moment. With the strong message of the lyric "I've made my decision to live on stage", it's a song that gives me a lot of encouragement.
Nomoto Hotaru: "I'll become the star of everyone's lives!", Yukishiro Akira's line from Delight. It makes me think "she's such an idiot~", but I can't hate her, and I can't help but think that it'll actually come true. I think it's a line that really represents Akira, and I've always loved it.
Itou Ayasa: The song "Position Zero e! [To Position Zero!]" from #1 is catchy, and the acting-like choreography was fun, so it left a deep impression on me. The lyric "I want to aim even higher" was so memorable that I thought the title was "I want to aim higher". (laughs)
Shiina Hekiru: The line "No matter which path you choose to advance on, the curtains of your lives will remain open". Once they enter this industry, these kids in the same class will make different decisions for their lives and go their separate ways. It's up to each person which path they choose, and there's a sight they can only see after they've made that decision.
Q.3
Episodes about your graduation ceremony/memories of graduation
Koyama Momoyo: Just like how Karen looked up to Starlight, I also had a play that I'd admired since I was a child, and the final audition for that play overlapped with my high school graduation ceremony...! I chose the audition, and in the end, I successfully passed. I was set to appear in the play of my dreams! I remember thinking, "You really don't know when your life is going to change, huh..."
Sato Hinata: On the day of my elementary school graduation, I didn't have any stick-on body warmers at home, so I attended with a non-sticky warmer on my stomach, and right before I received my diploma, it fell, and it was so embarrassing. I'll never forget it. I'll also never forget accepting the diploma while gripping the warmer in my right hand.
Haruki Iwata: I happened to be working on my Bachelor's thesis during the #1 revival, and during rehearsals I had everyone from the cast and staff fill out the questionnaire for my thesis...! I graduated thanks to everyone's help!! (laughs)
Mimori Suzuko: On the day of my high school graduation, there was snow piled on the ground, which is rare for March in Tokyo, and before I got to school, I fell on my butt and my skirt was soaked through...! I borrowed a spare skirt from the nurse's office and participated in the ceremony. It was a girls school, but I was popular with my juniors (laughs) so after the graduation ceremony, all of the buttons on my blazer were gone. Even the buttons on my sleeves♪
[T/N: It's a middle/high school graduation tradition for girls to ask guys they like for the second button on their blazer (more here), but if you're as (understandably) popular as Mimorin that extends to the rest of the buttons too.]
Ito Ayasa: I did a homestay abroad for two weeks in March just before graduation, and having stuffed myself full with all the food there before coming back, the photos from my graduation ended up being something incredible (laughs).
Aiba Aina: I remember staying up until midnight putting on flashy false nails, and then waking up at 5 AM to do my hair and makeup by myself as best as I could, but then it was ruined pretty quickly when I cried.
Q.4
A message to the members of your school
Maho Tomita: Every time we spend time together for a play, I realize how truly happy I am spending time creating plays together with all of you! Thank you so much for coming into my life♡
Ikuta Teru: I  L O V E  Y O U  !!!!!!!!!!!!!! LET'S HANG OUT TOGETHER AS NINE AGAIN, OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aiba Aina: I really can't thank you enough for coming into my life and becoming my friends. Thank you so much. When I couldn't do various things, without caring about anything like age or background, everyone gave advice to everyone, and including the ensemble cast, I just love Seisho's vibes. Let's keep sticking together from now on and forever! J'aime beaucoup tout le monde! [I love all of you so much!]
Nomoto Hotaru: To the Edel juniors. Yuka-chan and I are both doing our best as Edels. Let's stand on stage together as five again.
Kadoyama Yoko: I love you. Let's keep standing on stage together.
Shiina Hekiru: Keep on struggling. And, do not regret the path you have chosen.
Q.5
A message to the character you play
Koyama Momoyo: To Karen. The view I see from the stage with you is always colorful and radiant. I'll work hard to not lose to your brilliance, Karen! From here on as well, let's continue leaping into a yet unseen, beautiful future together! From Momoyo.
Mimori Suzuko: You went off to London without telling Karen again, I see...! The way you always decide where to go based on however you're feeling—I don't have that kind of proactiveness, and it sure is incredible. And the teacher did say that actresses are always selfish, so I think it's a good thing.
Maho Tomita: Let's go eat some yummy baumkuchen next time!!!
Sato Hinata: To Junna-chan. I can still vividly remember the moment we met. Your personality was so similar to mine, and I was a kid who thought it would be easier to give up when I was losing to someone. Since then, over the years, I was able to see many of your expressions, and before I realized it, I had gained courage from you. In order to make a decision, you need to take a big step forward, and in order to take that big step, you need an even larger amount of courage. But, Junna-chan, you taught me that taking that step can allow you to feel how big the world is. Thank you so much!! And let's keep doing our best from here on out! I hope you will continue shining brilliantly on stage with wonderful friends.
Haruki Iwata: I think you're feeling unsure about a lot of things on your new path, but you're a Stage Girl who's many times stronger than you think you are! May you continue shining on stage with strength, lovingly, and beautifully.
Koizumi Moeka: A lot of time has passed since we first met, Nana. I wonder if I've grown a bit since I met you? Up until now and from now on as well, my star is Daiba Nana, you and only you. I'll work even harder in hopes of being able to stand next to you proudly one day. Please watch over me, always.
Aiba Aina: Thank you for always pushing me forward. It's thanks to you, Claudine, that I could meet treasured friends and staff members, and overcome various obstacles! I'm really, truly happy to be able to play you, Claudine. You're "the best woman in the world" in my heart! I'll continue to work hard while looking up to you! Merci♡
Ikuta Teru: Futaba, I truly think you're amazing for deciding to go to Seisho with just a single word from Kaoruko, and then graduating from there and aiming for a new stage with your own will. I'm always learning from your hardworking and single-minded attitude. I'll do my best with all my strength so I won't lose to you! Thanks for always showing me a wonderful view!
Ito Ayasa: With how strong you are at your core, I'm sure you'll be fine no matter where you go from here on, Kaoruko. I'm looking forward to seeing your beautiful dancing in the future as well! Almost as much as Futaba-han is, I'm your number one fan too♡
Nomoto Hotaru: You're wild and free, and just live honestly on the stage, and you're so annoying, but I love you!!
Ozaki Yuka: Michiru, having walked with you thus far, I have so much respect for you and your charming personality that's hard to guess from your appearance. Please allow me to continue portraying your thoughts about acting and feelings about Akira, as dearly as I can. I'll keep working hard and aiming for greater heights in sword fighting, dancing, and acting so you won't be ashamed of me, so even when you're in Germany, let's do our best together♪ I'm worried that people will see you as a kid in Germany, Michiru~(laughs)
Kadoyama Yoko: There are so many people in this world who love you. Be confident and push forward towards your dreams. I will always be on your side.
Shiina Hekiru: You're lucky to have such wonderful students. The things you can pass down to them because you're you—please wrap them up nicely with deep love and strictness.

Signs From Candle Burning
Some candles are poorly made and will burn badly no matter what you do with them
If the wick is the wrong size the candle may be of no use for magical work
The temperature in the surrounding area, an open window causing a drought, and other things can make a difference
The candle can be affected by your own mood and until you have learned how to meditate using a candle flame you need not worry too much to begin with
The candle gives a clean, even burn
This might be called a successful burn and suggests the spell will most likely achieve the right result
If a glass encased candle burns and leaves no marks on the glass that is best
If a free standing candle leaves little to no residue, this is by far the best result
The flame flares, dips, gutters repeatedly
Check first for droughts and then decide intuitively whether there is a pattern to the flaring and guttering
If you are performing the spell with someone in mind, you may feel them trying to block your efforts
Sit quietly for a while until you feel you have grasped the significance of the pattern, which may be because the spell itself is not right for the time
A free standing candle runs and melts a lot while burning
This gives you an opportunity to observe the flow of wax for signs
Quickly melting wax shows there is a good deal of positivity available
If one side burns quicker than the other, a balance can sometimes be achieved by turning the candle round and it’s useful to note how many times you do this, since this can indicate the number of adjustments the person may have to make to ensure success
Can let nature take its course and watch the wax for signs, without interfering in its movements
A free standing candle burns down to a puddle of wax
Most workers will examine the shape of the wax for a sign
The shape of the wax run may suggest an outcome regarding the matter at hand
Wax puddles come in all kinds of shapes
Most candle workers look for symbols in the wax, or sometimes use numerology or other divination techniques similar to teacup reading to discover the meaning of a shape
A glass encased candle burns clean to begin with but “dirty” with a great deal of smoke later
Indicates that things will go well to begin with, but there are other conditions that have yet to reveal themselves and will need to be resolved
Someone may be working against the desired outcome, so the correct timing and correspondences of further spells are crucial
A free standing candle let’s put a lot of smoke but burns clean at the end
Difficult conditions need to be dealt with first of all but eventually conditions will improve
There is a dirty black burn(especially one that deposits soot on a glass encased candle)
This means that things aren’t going to go well- the spell may not work, the blessing may fail, the person is in Draper stress or trouble than you first thought
There is a great deal of negativity around
Sometimes it’s good to change the focus of the candle and ask that it be used to burn off negativity, which will enable you to get a handle on the situation
The candle goes out before completely burning
This can mean that the spell you are using isn’t the most appropriate one and you need to use stronger means than you first employed
Can also mean that someone is actively working against you. In this case it’s wise to go back to the beginning and start your spell over
The candle tips over and flames up into a potential fire hazard
If you placed the candle properly, this indicates there is danger about for you or the person you’re casting for
You should clear your space and cleanse it
It’s wise to wait a while before retrying the spell
The candle burns too quickly
An overly fast burn means that, although the work will go well, it’s effects won’t last long
Might be good to wait before retrying the spell, though sometimes a fast result is required
Use your own judgement

Okay, I doubt anyone’s ever gonna read this, but I just need to write down my thoughts on Good Omens Season 2. (Beware of spoilers)
The Characters
First of all, I love, love, LOVE the writing and especially the acting of everyone involved! Both Michael Sheen and David Tennant (and everyone else) gave absolutely stunning performances! I also like that the main cast was a lot smaller than in season 1, so everyone had more time to shine. Great choice! (I did however kinda miss God’s narration and meta commentary).
My favourite new character is Muriel by far. She is like Aziraphale's cute, naive, dorky little sister or niece and I had the biggest smile on my face whenever she was on screen! I hope to see more of her in season 3 (which we probably will since she now runs the bookshop).
What I also liked was that Nina and Maggie don’t just magically fall in love in the end. I mean, they barely know each other and Nina is still in a relationship for most of the season. I liked that they even call out Crowley and Aziraphale for trying to force a romance between them instead of treating them like real humans with free will. (Was that a slight call-out to shippers in fandoms? Who knows lol) I hope they'll find love along the way, but I'm glad they were portrayed as realistic human beings.
Gabriel goes from smug, condescending asshole everyone loved to hate to adorkable himbo and I'm all for it! lol I wasn't in the fandom back in the day, but apparently Gabriel x Beelzebub was a popular ship and I can only imagine how happy the fans must be now that it became canon! I didn't see it coming at all, but it played out really well and didn't come across as forced. I just found it a bit funny and sad that these two fell in love and decided to break away from Heaven and Hell to be together in only a couple of years whereas Crowley and Aziraphale haven't managed to do that in more than 6000 years.
Which brings me to...
The Last Episode
We all know the last 20 minutes of episode 6 were absolutely heart-wrenching, but I wouldn't have it any other way! It was the perfect ending/cliffhanger in all regards and both their decisions make perfect sense. I wouldn't have wanted Crowley and Aziraphale to get their happy end at this point in the story because they're simply not there yet, character-wise.
Also, then a huge plot point and conflict would miss from the final 3rd season. I live for the angst and the drama and I can't wait for satisfying character development and the ultimate, heartfelt conclusion. (Please, Neil! ;__;)
Character Analysis
Crowley:
The most interesting things for me were the several hints that Crowley used to be a very high-ranking and powerful angel before he fell (maybe Gabriel’s predecessor?).
In S2-1 Aziraphale already knows who Angel Crowley is and looks at him with awe and admiration. (In German we have the great expression "jemanden anhimmeln" - roughly meaning sth like "to admire someone as if they came from heaven")
Crowley was part of the designer team of the universe and worked together closely with the higher-ups. He was also entrusted with starting the engine of a quadrant.
He is a creator and visionary who loves the stars, the planets, the whole universe and sees the big picture. He also uses critical thinking and encourages others to do the same.
The miracle he performs with Aziraphale to hide Gabriel’s identity is so strong that Heaven thinks the most powerful of Archangels must have done it. Since Aziraphale hides Gabriel from Hell and Crowley hides him from Heaven, but the alarm only goes off in Heaven, we can assume that Crowley had a bigger part in the miracle.
He can somehow deceive other angels from recognizing him as a demon: Gabriel, Michael & Co. in the Ijob episode and later Muriel when she first comes to observe Aziraphale.
He can change the weather and cause fire or lightning at will.
He still has access to classified files for dominions or above.
He literally brings the guy who was killed by the demon horde back to life like it's nothing.  Short update: Neil recently said that Mr. Brown wasn't actually dead but only held captive during the battle. Well, Crowley at least healed Mr. Brown's injuries and removed his traumatic memories.
He is the only one in a room full of high-ranking angels who recognizes Metatron as what he is.
But it’s also implied that Crowley may have memory loss after he was kicked out of heaven because the angels did to him something similar to what they want to do to Gabriel now.
He doesn't remember working on the universe with Saraqael.
He remembers being in the Great War, but not battling right beside Furfur.
He vaguely remembers discussing gravity with the other angels, but he doesn’t remember why it was a good idea.
He seems to know exactly what the amnestic Gabriel is going through (the empty house metaphor, the physical pain of trying to remember etc.)
Crowley is hiding a huge trauma and it becomes really obvious how hurt and lonely he really is.
In S1-5 we learn Crowley was tortured by being thrown into a pool of boiling sulfur, just because he dared to ask a few questions and make suggestions. Heaven is cruel beyond all measure! (But because of their chronic lack of communication I doubt Aziraphale knows exactly how much Crowley suffered both physically and mentally.)
At the end of the Ijob episode in season 2 he laughs at the distraught Aziraphale because he knows what it’s really like to have fallen. The thought of someone like Aziraphale going to Hell is ridiculous to him. And he wouldn’t wish something so terrible on anybody anyway, especially not Aziraphale. He knows first hand what Heaven does to “traitors”.
He’s been tortured and kicked out of Heaven, but he doesn’t resent creation itself like the other demons do, quite the contrary. He often goes out of his way to help humans, even if it means punishment from Hell.
Because both Heaven and Hell are cruel and toxic, he decides he doesn’t want to be on any side in this eternal and pointless conflict. This, of course, leads him on a very, very lonely road.
Maybe this is why he (consciously or unconsciously) latches onto Aziraphale so much: He notices Aziraphale’s own doubts about the heavenly plan really early on. So he constantly encourages him to question his beliefs and own morals.
I don’t think he does it for overly selfish reasons, he just wants to show someone else that not everything is black and white and that Heaven’s plans are not always as good as they want to come across. But of course he also doesn’t want to be all alone anymore.
Aziraphale:
Aziraphale is, first and foremost, a guardian, a protector. But we can’t forget he is also a warrior and a leader.
In the beginning he was wielding a flaming sword, in S1-5 he is supposed to lead the heavenly troops into battle, in 1941 we learn he owns and knows how to use a gun. In S1-6 he is willing to shoot the Antichrist (who is in the body of a child I might add!!), but Madame Tracey stops him.
He likes spending his time helping others and indulging in his quirky little hobbies, but if he needs to, he steps up and becomes a leader (e.g. the stand-off in S2-6 when the demons and angels shout at each other and he takes control of the situation).
Aziraphale embodies many positive core values: Love, loyalty, politeness, kindness, forgiveness - which sometimes lets him come across as naive. He is also a big people pleaser.
In Season 2 we once again see how much Aziraphale values and loves humanity (more than we deserve tbh). His heart is so big and full of love for them. He is his best self when he can do good for humans and he thrives off it. The thought of innocent people, especially children dying is really the only thing that ever convinces him to go against Heaven’s rules/orders (seen in the entirety of season 1 and in season 2 in the Ijob and graverobber episodes).
But because of these core values he sometimes acts pretty holier-than-thou and hypocritical: He tends to try to make others do the dirty work so that he can wash his hands of responsibility.
We also learn that he sometimes abuses his heavenly powers to get what he wants. I mean, organizing a ball itself is a very wholesome idea, but he literally manipulates everyone’s clothes, feelings and behaviours, making them do or feel things they wouldn’t normally do in this situation. Nina is the one affected by this the most: She just got dumped and is sad and angry, but Aziraphale’s magic doesn’t allow her to feel those very valid emotions. He only means to do good, but ultimately he forces his will on the participants of the ball. And he doesn’t even realize it! This is not okay.
There is this one very meaningful line in Season 1 where Aziraphale says: "You go too fast for me, Crowley". And it really shows in every aspect of his personality and character design.
Aziraphale always wears similar, familiar clothes and barely changes his hairstyle over the centuries. Crowley on the other hand looks completely different in each time period we see him. Crowley lives in the present, goes with the time, Aziraphale lives in the past, can’t catch up.
No matter how often Heaven disappoints and mistreats him, he still desperately clings to the idea that their plans and institution are good at their core. Even after more than 6000 years Aziraphale is still so obsessed with the idea of good vs. evil, Heaven vs. Hell and to an extent even Aziraphale vs. Crowley. Yes, the two have become visibly closer and more familiar with each other since season 1, but Aziraphale still thinks in the good side vs. the bad side ("my people" vs. "your people", “Of course you said no to Hell, you [not “THEY”!!] are the bad guys!”) absolute, whereas Crowley has distanced himself from both sides long ago and only wants to be with Aziraphale.
Besides their lack of communication this is their biggest problem: Aziraphale can’t accept Crowley for what he is - or is not anymore.
First there is some sort of resentment and caution towards this fallen angel, of course. But Aziraphale wouldn’t be Aziraphale if his big loving heart held onto those feelings for long. He quickly sees that Crowley isn’t purely evil as demons are supposed to be. He likes and WANTS to see the good in everything and everyone.
Aziraphale begins to enjoy Crowley’s company over the centuries and eventually trusts him completely. But due to his indoctrination by Heaven he still unconsciously believes that Crowley, as an evil demon, is beneath him, Aziraphale, who is a righteous and morally superior angel. And while he has compassion and sympathy for Crowley and his terrible fate - he also somewhat pities him. (And being pitied is certainly nothing Crowley wants.)
This is the reason he is so incredibly happy about the thought that he could give Crowley his angel status back. As sad as it is to see how little Aziraphale understands Crowley after all those millenia, it feels completely in-character why he wants Crowley to be an angel again. He sees that there is still so much good left of the former angel he admired so much. He witnessed how brilliant Crowley used to be, an angel who loved creating and gazed at the universe with such exaltation. How happy he was, how bright, how enthusiastic in what he was doing!
This plays right into Metatron’s hands in the last episode.
Early in the season Crowley is offered a huge promotion in Hell if he finds Gabriel. And Crowley doesn’t even consider it for a single second - even though he hates Gabriel (He still clearly remembers the "Shut your stupid mouth and die" and all the other horrible things). When Aziraphale is offered the new position as Supreme Archangel he hesitates at first, but as soon as Metatron suggests reinstating Crowley to angelic status, he agrees in delight. Aziraphale thinks now they wouldn't have to be separated, they could even be together officially and it wouldn’t be reprehensible anymore because they’d now both be angels, both on the “good” side. They’d finally be equals and could even do good together, change the system.
So of course, from Aziraphale’s perspective, making Crowley an angel again would solve all of their problems (or what he perceives as problems). He, Aziraphale, wouldn't have to have a bad conscience anymore for spending time with someone who should be a mortal enemy. He could finally “fix” Crowley, make him truly good again. But of course it backfires horribly.
Their relationship:
As much as I loved the funny banter, the wholesome and adorable slice-of-life moments, this season made one thing really obvious to me: There is a big power-imbalance (for the lack of a better word) between them in their relationship.
As far as we've seen, Crowley is almost always the one who gives, Aziraphale is almost always the one who takes. When Aziraphale wants something (e.g. protect Gabriel, take the Bentley to Edinburgh, have Crowley take care of the bookshop in his absence, organize a dance etc.), Crowley initially refuses - but in the end always gives in to what Aziraphale wants.
Aziraphale is very outgoing, has a whole little community with the vendors in his street, actively mingles with humans and has hobbies (reading, collecting books, eating at fine restaurants, listening to music, practicing magic, going on little detective adventures etc.). What I’m saying is: Aziraphale has a life for himself, even after becoming a persona-non-grata in Heaven.
Crowley on the other hand... He either goes along with what Aziraphale does/wants or sleeps in his car (and takes care of his plants I guess). That's pretty much it. He doesn’t get any new tasks from Hell and only communicates with Shax on occasion when she brings him his mail or random news. He is so isolated from Hell, Heaven and Earth that literally his only reason for existing at this point seems to be Aziraphale. He practically has no ambitions or life of his own. Aziraphale always lets Crowley be his rescuer because it makes Crowley happy. But isn’t it sad that Crowley is only ever happy when he can protect and be around Aziraphale? Crowley’s whole life revolves around him and nothing else. This is not healthy!
Think back to season 1 when the bookshop burns down and Crowley thinks he’s lost Aziraphale forever. He is a mess, he screams and cries and breaks down. It was only for a couple of hours, but he’s experienced what a life without his one true friend is like and the loss hits him so hard, it hurts even us as an audience!
And the worst thing: I don't think either of them really notice all that - because they don't TALK! Nina and Maggie were so right: The two idiots never really talk to each other about their true thoughts and feelings.
There is so much miscommunication and misunderstanding of each other's needs because of that:
Aziraphale is internally conflicted about what he wants (be a good angel of Heaven vs. be with the enemy, an "evil" demon).
Crowley knows exactly what he wants (to be with and ONLY with Aziraphale), but he can’t muster up the courage to say it. After all, the last time he spoke freely about his thoughts, he was branded a traitor, tortured and cast out by Heaven.
So they constantly fail to find a solution that both of them are happy with:
Both in Season 1 and 2 Crowley asks Aziraphale to leave everything behind and run away with him, not acknowledging Aziraphale's undying love for and loyalty to humankind. And he gets rejected for it both times.
In S2-6 Aziraphale asks Crowley to come to Heaven with him, not acknowledging how Heaven has hurt Crowley, not accepting him for who he is. Instead he wants to fix him. Over the years he has also become so used to Crowley always being there for him, he takes his help for granted. So when Crowley actually stands his ground for once and refuses to do what Aziraphale wants, it shocks Aziraphale to his core. He’s never been rejected like that.
They aren’t humans, they are both ageless, sex- and genderless, asexual, otherworldly beings, so human relationship standards don’t apply to them. We can also see that in Gabriel’s and Beelzebubs relationship. Their love is something emotional, not physical. They don’t kiss or even hug, they just look at each other and sing "Everyday" - their personal love song - before they go off together.
Crowley and Aziraphale have spent so much time away from Heaven and Hell and lead almost human-like lives on Earth. So in a desperate, last ditch effort Crowley chooses to show his emotions in a very physical, human way, a way that beings like them wouldn’t normally do. But it’s his very last chance to make Aziraphale understand. So he kisses him. It’s an angry, sad, messy, utterly unpleasant kiss, it’s painful to look at.
Aziraphale doesn’t kiss back, his hands are erratic. He is so torn. His heart and his brain tell him two different things. He needs Crowley, but Crowley refuses to come to Heaven with him.
And what is the first thing that comes to Aziraphale’s mind after the kiss? “I forgive you!” Because that’s what he’s good at, right? Forgiveness. He told Maggie that in the first episode of the season. I don’t know what exactly he wants to forgive and I’m not sure he knows himself.
When they part they’re both in emotional agony, they both feel betrayed. Crowley storms out, but still waits outside his car. He still has this tiny bit of hope left that Aziraphale will come with him after all. He only gets in and drives off once he sees the doors to Heaven close behind Aziraphale and Metatron.
Metatron’s plan
I read some theories that Metatron poisoned Aziraphale’s coffee, but I really, REALLY hope that this isn’t true. It would take away all the gravity of Aziraphale’s decision if he is just drugged to go along with Metatron and comes to his senses once the drug wears off. That would be boring and lame!
I also don’t think that Crowley and Aziraphale switch appearances again as they did in Season 1: Clearly Metatron would be able to see through the disguise, he is much more powerful than the angels after all.
No, I think Metatron cleverly manipulates Aziraphale by giving him the opportunity (or rather the illusion thereof) to make changes in Heaven with Crowley at his side. Aziraphale is so convinced that Crowley would be full of joy and gratitude at the prospect of becoming an angel again. He once again fails to understand that this is the exact opposite of what Crowley wants.
Metatron on the other hand appears to know Crowley much better in that regard. He remembers how powerful Crowley is and how far he fell for asking the wrong questions. He loathes Crowley and would never want him in a position of power in Heaven ever again. So from the outset Metatron knows that Crowley would not agree to become an angel again, that’s why he makes that specific offer to Aziraphale in the first place. It’s his clever way to make the two fall out with each other, to separate them and still win Aziraphale over for his plan.
I just wonder what his real goal is here. Michael or Uriel seem like a much more logical choice for Supreme Archangel if he really only wants to go through with the next Armageddon. That can’t be everything, right? He knows that Aziraphale actively worked on preventing the first Armageddon. Why would he think Aziraphale would now be on board for the second one? Metatron can’t underestimate Aziraphale that much, right? He’s way too cunning to believe that Aziraphale is weak-minded and gullible.
I mean, I’m not too versed in religious mythology, but doesn’t the Second Coming of Christ mean Judgement Day and that God’s kingdom takes over the world after smiting all enemies? That doesn’t sound like something Aziraphale wants (especially the smiting of all enemies which would include Crowley). So why does he still agree to go with Metatron after learning about this???
Does Aziraphale think he can outsmart Metatron and all the other high-ranking angels and avert the end of the world when he’s in a position of power? I mean, he is intelligent, he must have a plan after hearing about the Second Coming, right? That would at least somewhat explain his very weird and uncanny smile during the credit roll. I just don’t know what to think about all this.
My best guess is that Aziraphale will first try to undermine Metatron and speak to the Almighty Themselves (something he already wanted to do in season 1 but was denied), and also to make positive reforms in Heaven. But Metatron sees this coming of course. To make Aziraphale his obedient puppet he will simply threaten to erase Crowley from the Book of Life should Aziraphale ever dare to step out of line.
Crowley never told Aziraphale about what he and Muriel found out in Heaven - that Michael & Co. were actively planning Armageddon 2.0 before Gabriel went renegade. But now Crowley can’t do anything to help prevent it because he knows that Aziraphale is completely at Metatron’s mercy.
I’m dying to see how this will all play out, but at this moment I’m just confused and unsure about all of this.
So what do I want/expect from season 3?
I want Crowley to overcome his trauma, his pain, his trust issues, all the rejection and loss he faced. I want him to be able to be himself: Free, loved, respected, cared for, accepted. I want him to live a happy life with, but not live FOR Aziraphale. I want him to make other meaningful connections. Maybe with Muriel? She is the only other kind and good-hearted angel we see in the show and a friendship would benefit both of them greatly in my opinion.
I want Aziraphale to fight for Crowley, to protect him for once. When they meet again I want him to do the stupid apology dance for three hours. I want him to finally accept Crowley as his best friend, his soulmate, his true love, his equal. I want him to take Crowley’s glasses off, look him in the eyes and then be the one to lean in for a kiss. A kiss that isn’t forceful and desperate, but heartfelt and genuine.
As for the plot of season 3… I’d really like to see a flashback of the often mentioned Great War between the angels and soon-to-be-demons. I’d also like characters from season 1 to make a cameo appearance if possible. Apart from that I don’t have any predictions or big ideas (as I said before, still very confused about Metatron’s plan).
I will put my faith in Neil Gaiman and Wait and See (TM) what he ultimately comes up with. :’)

The Alcott Analysis
So now that The Alcott has officially been released I wanted to do an analysis of some of the lyrics and how I think they might relate to Taylor. Disclaimer: I know Aaron said Matt wrote the main parts of the song and Taylor only added the dialogue parts so many of these connections might be a coincidence, but I also think it’s possible Taylor could have had more input on the song than they’re letting on since there are so many themes and motifs that perfectly relate back to Taylor’s music. This is just meant to be a fun clown theory

Like many others pointed out, the whole first verse is very “Help I’m still at the restaurant, still sitting in a corner I haunt, cross legged in the dim light, they say ‘what a sad sight’” and seems like the opposite pov of RWYLM
“It’s the last thing you/I wanted, it’s the first thing I/you do, I tell you that I think I’m falling back in love w/ you” // “I love you ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard” // “Uh oh I’m falling in love, oh no I’m falling in love again”
“I had to do something to break into your golden thinking” // “Lost in the labyrinth of my mind…you would break your back to make me break a smile”— this is directly related to the following ⬇️
“And there you are sitting as usual w/ your golden notebook, writing something about someone who used to be me…I sit there silently waiting for you to look up” // “Did you ever hear about the girl who got frozen, time moved on for everybody else, she won’t know it, she’s still 23 inside her fantasy, how it was supposed to be…and you’re sitting in front of me” -> Taylor is stuck in her own head reminiscing and writing about the past (the golden age) and this person sitting in front of her is trying to break her out of this nostalgic escapist mindset. I think this may be a direct reference to the film Midnight in Paris which is all about nostalgia and escapism--much like the song Paris on the Midnights 3am edition--and specifically to golden age thinking, a phrase used in that film. Here are some tidbits that I think are worth noting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
@chickawah23 made a really great post about the possible Midnight in Paris connections. Here’s a screenshot from that post that does a good job summarizing the important parallels
Tumblr media
There definitely seems to be a connection between Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights, and the folklore chapters that were released in Aug 2020, specifically the sleepless nights and escapism chapters. I think it’s interesting that exile is the last track of the first chapter and first track of the second chapter--almost like the second chapter is a direct continuation of the first which again links Midnights to this escapism theme. And there’s been a lot of exile references lately (exile ends, doors, 8/3, etc)
Tumblr media
Even though the back and forth dialogue between Taylor and Matt at first sounds argumentative, I think it could also be read in a positive way. This person is going to ruin and wreck Taylor’s plans and Taylor is going to gladly let them. She welcomes the curse on their house. “I’m begging for you to take my hand wreck my plans that’s my man” // “For you I would ruin myself a million little times” // “I wish to know the fatal flaw that makes you long to be magnificently cursed...He’s gonna burn this house to the ground...So yeah it’s a fire it’s a goddamn blaze in the dark and you started it” // “Dear reader, burn all the files, desert all your past lives” // Taylor is the one that chooses to burn the lover house down. She’s the one holding the lighter on the Midnights album cover and striking the match in the lavender haze mv (here’s a really great post about what that might signify). Furthermore, the willow performance and description make me think that the curse on Taylor’s house was actually her own doing--she’s not only letting this person wreck her plans but is helping them do so. So the burning, wrecking, ruining, cursing/spell casting are all metaphors for the same thing—destroying Taylor’s closet and possibly her career as a result of that

[BSTS] Gui Year of the Dragon Reward 4* Card Story
(note: The cast members that are dragons were sent to perform at an outdoor festival celebrating the year of the dragon.)
Tumblr media
chapter 1 -festival grounds-
kongou: Looks like this is where they’re holding the kite flying competition.
gui: …There’s a lot of people here. Are they all competitors?
sinju: Some of them are probably just here to watch. It’s fun just getting to watch kites being flown too.
mizuki: Who cares how many people we’re up against. We’re gonna win and get that high end beef prize!
saki: Please do your best, everyone.
hari: That tent over there must be the reception desk. I’ll go and sign us up.
-time pass-
hari: Thanks for waiting, I’ve acquired the kite materials.
sinju: Materials?
hari: Yes, the kites are set up to be custom made by the participants.
mizuki: What? Why? That’s too much work, you guys do it. Peace.
-mizuki leaves-
kongou: Hey, wait! Mizuki!
hari: …He’s already gone.
sinju: What~!? But he was so fired up just a second ago?
gui: Want me to chase after him?
kongou: When he gets like that he’s not gonna change his mind even if you do catch him…
hari: Let’s not worry about him. We’ll make the kite ourselves.
-time pass-
hari: First choose a kite shape and design and then once it’s affixed to the frame it’s complete.
sinju: I see, this might be a bit harder than I first thought.
hari: It’s so everyone can participate in the event in our own unique way. If we have the time, I think it’s a good idea.
kongou: Ok, how about we pick what shape we want first?
sinju: Let’s see, what do we have here. There’s a square kite, a diamond kite and there’s even fish shaped ones.
saki: They all look cool, don’t they?
gui: Which one is the best?
sinju: Hmm, I’m not sure. The answer would depend on who you ask.
hari: Rather than the shape itself, it appears the key factor is how you affix it to the frame. The requirement for a kite to fly well is for it to be attached right in the middle of the frame, achieving bilateral symmetry.
kongou: In that case, we can just choose whatever we prefer for the shape and design right?
hari: For the design, we should naturally go for one that has a dragon.
sinju: Doesn’t the diamond shaped one look cool?
gui: …….
kongou: If you’re interested Gui, do you want to be the one to put it together?
gui: Can I?
hari: If you need help I’m here. There’s no harm in challenging yourself.
sinju: If Gui does it I’m sure it’ll turn out well since he’s dexterous. I’m in agreement!
gui: Ok. I’ll give it a go.
-
chapter 2 -festival grounds-
saki: How is the setting up of the kite going, Gui-san?
gui: I’m just doing some finishing touches then it’ll be ready. Look.
Tumblr media
saki: Wow, it looks great!
kongou: Yeah, you’ve done pretty well haven’t you? It looks like it’s going to fly up real high.
gui: Hari helped me create it. We’re going to compete with this kite.
kongou: Yeah, let’s do our best in the competition.
sinju: It’s finally time to start flying. So the rules are that the team that can fly their kite the highest wins?
kongou: Yep. How about we let Gui fly it first since he was the one who made it?
gui: Ok. I’ll give it a go.
-gui starts flying the kite-
kongou: The trick is to properly read the direction and strength of the wind. Do your best.
saki: Oh, it’s flying!
gui: But it’s so low… The other kites are so much higher up in the sky.
sinju: Here, let me take it for a moment.
-sinju flys the kite-
saki: Uwah, it’s slowly getting higher and higher!
sinju: Heheh, I’ve flown kites, played badminton, played with spinning tops and done all sorts of things like this with my grandpa. When it comes to new year’s activities you can count on me.
hari: A dragon soaring high in the sky is a good omen.
sinju: …Hm? Wait, there’s something written on our kite’s tail… It says ‘A performance by dragons to commemorate the year of the dragon, this afternoon on the main stage’…!?
kongou: That’s some crazy good hand writing…
hari: I wrote it. It was the optimal spot to advertise our show.
kongou: Hahah, so that’s why.
sinju: Ah, Saki-chan. The wind isn’t too strong at the moment so do you want to try flying the kite?
saki: Yes, I’d like to.
-saki flys the kite-
sinju: Make sure you keep the string taut. If it starts to loosen, pull on it a bit and adjust it so that it’s taut again.
saki: …Like this?
sinju: Yeah that’s it! You’re a natural.
-sky-
gui: …The kite is flying so high.
kongou: Yeah. The dragon that you made is soaring magnificently into the sky.
-time pass-
mizuki: Huh? Where are all the kites at?
sinju: You’re finally back, Mizuki! The kite flying competition has already ended.
mizuki: Oh, really? Then where’s our meat?
gui: We came second. There’s no meat.
mizuki: What? You didn’t win!?
kongou: The result may be disappointing but I think it ended up being a good advertisement for our show.
mizuki: Tch, is that so? Well whatever, if there’s a competition for who’s gonna liven up the festival the most, then we’re obviously gonna take out first place.
kongou: Yeah, it’ll be a blast. Let’s give it our all.
—end

okay so I just saw the London production of Rebecca and BOY DO I HAVE SOME THOUGHTS
- score sounded rich and full (orchestra must be huge!!!!) and singing was magnificent throughout
- the English lyrics swung between Really Solid and then abruptly Bad depending on the song, with some truly bizarre structural choices in places (e.g. 'doch sie hat mich verraten' became 'utterly betrayed me' which was awkward and spread over too many syllables it made me wince). BUT overall the bones of the translation are there, it just needs more time and work...
- Danny was the best thing in it, Kara Lane absolutely killed it, I can't wait to go back and see her again so I can analyse every second of her performance; she had to sell some really botched lyrics and did such a good job selling them with her performance; she was cold, defiant, unhinged, vengeful, and eventually utterly broken. obsessed 10/10 would die for her.
- dear God the set was an unprofessional disaster. IKEA meets cardboard walls meets local am dram. I have literally seen village pantos with better sets. Rebecca's room had a bed with plain purple sheets, a backdrop with abstract green swirls (?), and a desk. literally just send someone to the nearest charity shop and buy a couple of candlesticks and some tasseled cushions, for goodness sake, it'll cost you ten quid. I know they have a tight budget but they're going to get laughed off the West End with a set like this.
- the lighting made everything Worse. it was flat and washed out but somehow kept putting the faces in shadow so you couldn't see them??? the colours and depth of the European productions are SO distinct, why are we lighting everything like it's a rehearsal room ffs
- Ich was a darling, very sweet and vulnerable with the voice of an angel, I wanted to close my eyes multiple times just to listen to her songs. she full-on sobbed during the beach scene with Maxim.
- costumes were okay, a bit grungy??? I really miss Ich having some brighter colours after she gains confidence and comes into her own, BUT Danny looked bomb they gave her a beautifully tailored black dress and Kara Lane has a figure to die for so that was 👏👏👏
- Maxim was great, but he looked about 20 and wore his heart on his sleeve??? very charming and funny and flirty which is...not what I was expecting, and honestly not an interpretation that totally works for the story, but he gave a strong performance and absolutely attacked Kein Laecheln, it was very very powerful
- no staircase, no fire, but the cast worked their butts off to ACT the fire and honestly full respect they did a really good job. I felt their panic and terror so vividly. Danny didn't appear onstage until the last 5 seconds of the song, and we only saw her from behind as she started up the stairs...bizarre timing??? but maybe an honest mistake as it was a preview performance
- blocking was very different in places. I liked some of it (e.g. Danny dressing up Ich in nightgown, lipstick, and doing her hair during Rebecca II was intensely creepy but perfect) but other things were a bit odd (e.g. Maxim being super kissy and cutesy and physical with Ich in a way that felt more teenage boy that older English gentleman lol)
- there are LOTS of structural changes, new songs, and things that have been cut (like Danny's entrance...criminal actually) but I'll make a separate post about those
send me an ask if you want to know about anything in particular, happy to provide details!

*New to me
Thoughts on the New to Me films:
New Year's Eve we watched RRR, a lot of fun, energetic, bright and action-packed. I enjoyed the way that little attention was given to the British characters. They were straight up villains in ill fitting ahistorical costumes, kind of like the way Indian/Asian characters are treated in Western films most of the time...$$$
New Year's Day we watched Peter's Friends, a drama/comedy from the early 90s starring all of the famous Cambridge Footlights. Big Chill-ish film set in a country house over the Christmas holidays. $$$
How to Get a Head in Advertising was weird and also really good. Had a similar vibe to Withnail and I (possibly because of Richard E. Grant, but also possibly the mixture of the surreal with the realistic). Quite stage-y in some ways but clever and savage in it's satire of life in the 80s. $$$
Frieda: Oh I loved this! Weird World War II melodrama about a German girl marrying a British boy and all the trouble it causes with his complex family situation. Such a stellar cast including the late, great Glynnis Johns. $$$$
The Quick and the Dead: I set my expectations quite low for this and was pleasantly surprised. I liked Sam Raimi's comic book-y take on gunfighters and esp. loved Sharon Stone's character. We love to see a female action hero with no love interest. A nice twist on the Man with no Name trope. Excellent cast as well with Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider and Woody Stroud in his final film. $$$
The Barefoot Contessa: Joseph Mankewitcz is one of the geniuses of old Hollywood but this ain't it, chief. Just kind of all of the place melodrama that makes no sense and relies too much on Ava Gardner looking amazing in technicolor in the South of France. A bit of a commentary on Grace Kelly who a few years earlier married minor royalty on the Riviera. Even Rossano Brazzi can't save this mess for me. $
Rhubarb: Two genres I usually kind of hate (family-friendly animal centered film, sports film) combined into one and it's actually a lot of fun. Ray Milland and a bunch of classic character actors as the baseball team (also Leonard Nemoy has a tiny part as a mobster) in this slight/ predictable romp. $$
The Birds: Woah, shit this was good. I should have known. Amazing tension created and Hitchcock just sells the surreal horror with lots of rear projection...so. much. rear. projection. $$$
House of Yes: How about House of NOPE. Ugh what a mess this was. Some good performances and intriguing story, but it was very stagey and I don't know why the 90s couldn't make a story about adult children and their parents without reducing everyone to cliches and stereotypes but this and Six Degrees of Separation are definitely guilty of that, but the latter is just a better film. $
Cassandra Cat: Takes a long time to get to the cat which given that this was a family film from the 60s might be a problem for some viewers, expecting a more cat-centric movie. Interesting riff on fairy tales from the Czech New Wave. Beautiful Demy-esque technicolor and settings make this 60s nonsense fly by. $$
The Day the Earth Caught Fire: 60s nuclear panic disaster film that really just shows the earth as it is now in the throws of global warming. Yikes. Thoughtfully written and well acted by a bunch of folks I'd never heard of. $$
For Me and My Gal: Directed by Busby Berkley and starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland and set in the 1920s on the Vaudeville circuit, I was expecting a lot more fun, dancing, color, costumes etc. This is actually more of a black and white war time melodrama with some music shoved into it and the dancing is very rudimentary. (I think this is probably because Garland esp. at this stage wasn't in the same league with Gene Kelly and I think it would have been too noticable...). Filmed at the entry of America into WW2 this was quite a deliberate propaganda piece. $$
TLADOCB Commentary: I've watched this movie 20 times at least but the commentary really made me think about a bunch of things differently. Can't say I recommend unless you are fanatic though as it's obviously pieced together from interviews Michael Powell and Martin Scorcese $$
Water (1985): If you smoke the exact right strain of sativa and ignore some of the more dated aspects of this 80s comedy, that reads as if Local Hero were a Cheech and Chong film--this is a total classic. Irreverent Michael Caine just straight up breaking character the minute he turns into a guerilla fighter in the jungle and being far too competent and cool, and then snapping back to sweetly shy, inept British Civil Servant, finding he actually loves his hated backwater post (the invent Casara part Caribbean, part Devon Jurassic Coast) while having to actually do his job. Political satire and fully both barrels to Maggie Thatcher and Reagan. Good on em. Filmed in St. Lucia, the movie has a zany heart and little taste, hoovering up vast quantities of competent TV players from my youth: Herman Munster and Reginald Perrin to name but two. Awkward love story and some uneven acting from Valerie Perrin and Brenda Vaccaro. I enjoyed myself, heartily, anyway. $$$
The Ballad of John and Yoko: Technically a video essay with amazing production values (the licensing alone was epic) dragging together disparate topics around the central theme of women being blamed for bad things happening to infantalized male geniuses. Is it the most coherent argument? No. Does it absolutely tap into many unexpressed or implied ideas that have been floating around since me too? Absolutely. $$
Track 29: This was some of the worst casting I've ever seen in a film. When I think of Texas nurse who is into trains and spanking, I don't automatically think of comedian Sandra Bernhardt. When I think of an actress of that era who was old enough to play Gary Oldman's mother, I don't think of Theresa Russell who is the same age as Oldman and looked every bit as young as he did in the film. Maybe that was the point? I'm not sure. The story was weird, like a Southern Gothic melodrama/black comedy ala Flannery O'Connor, but there was something off about the whole thing.

I saw the first episode of House a couple weeks ago, and I feel like it's the quintessential American TV show. The main character is cold, rude and a patronising asshole, but no-one can do anything about it because he's also a ~medical genius~ so they have to put up with his antisocial bullshit. I feel like it plays to a lazy power fantasy where someone can just be an all-out cunt without any repercussions because they're Too Good at what they do to be punished.
He hired a black guy not because he was top of his class at an Ivy League school, which he was - he hired him because he was a delinquent in his youth, and House wants someone with "street smarts". They almost kill a woman multiple times, until House gets his team to break into her house and rifle through her things. End the episode with a moment that straddles the line between a cryptic hook for another character's storyline and casual misogyny and you've got a pilot.
I understand the character is gonna get more backstory and he'll hit highs and lows and eventually he'll be depicted as a broken, miserable man due to a bevy of tragic circumstances, and it'll all be lofty and emotional and good television, so all the kvetching isn't aspirational and the Drama and Tragedy of House will play out. But I feel like an aspect of the show's appeal - besides the stylism and Hugh Laurie's performance - is that House is an absolute shithead who gets a pass because he's a fringe genius with job security, and people like to see people behaving badly but not getting punished for it because they fantasize about the same thing. I mean shit, I'm not immune. Sometimes you want to scream at someone at work without getting fired.
It reminded me a lot of a video I saw of Stephen Fry where he's talking about British comedy protagonists and American comedy protagonists - of course it's about comedy and House is a drama, so it's not 1:1, but stick with me for a sec. He says that the difference between British comedy and American comedy is that the British comedic protagonist is generally a bit of a twerp, someone who isn't particularly well-off and who generally wants to be a step higher than they are in life, but any attempt to reach the station they think they deserve is thwarted by anything up to divine intervention. They'll lie, cheat, steal and harm others, and it'll all blow up spectacularly in their face and be for naught. Maybe they won't be so bad, and the universe will conspire against them to keep them down - and sometimes they overcome their karmic fate and get a win. Look at the Mr. Bean skit where he's in a doctor's waiting room with a person wearing a full-body cast, and contrast it with the one where he's at a laundromat. A hallmark of great British comedy is how closely it can hem to tragedy, if it wasn't so funny watching someone fall down a flight of stairs.
Meanwhile, American comedy protagonists will lie, steal, cheat etc. - they'll aspire for a higher calling than their working class background, just like the British protagonist. The main difference is that they aren't painted as a miserable twerp, not unless the show takes a dramatic turn and the character is objectively and clearly meant to be perceived as a shithead. The American comedy protagonist, regardless of any wrongdoing, is meant to be painted as Relatable, as someone you want to see succeed. They're a lovable underdog, and one day they're gonna make it, so you tune in every week to see them one step at a time on their life's journey.
Consider How I Met Your Mother, where Ted Mosby's tendency to be a shithead is mostly a retroactive viewpoint or played for drama; the show paints his journey towards finding the love of his life as a fairly straightforward, episodic slice-of-life comedy. Consider Becker, where even though he is a crotchety bastard who's frequently a karmic punching bag who's in the wrong, he'll get moments where he stands on a soapbox and preaches a viewpoint that's like "the last sane man in a world of madness", and his viewpoint will be painted as correct. Becker is as much the stand-in for the common man as he is a butt-monkey.
A British man intentionally burning his wife's roast so her mother won't come over for dinner tends to be funny for how rude and sociopathic it is. You're watching a man ruin his wife's cooking and intentionally scuttling her evening plans for his own selfish interest. He's a bastard, and the resulting misadventure - i.e. maybe he sets the whole kitchen on fire - is funny because it's the misadventures of a bastard. I feel like the American version would play up the husband's distaste for his mother in law, have him ruin the roast, but then be faced with the consequences of his actions and have to apologize - because he's not a bastard, he's a misguided fella who has to learn to compromise and suck up an awkward dinner or two. He'll still face the consequences of his actions, but the show makes sure you know that he has a heart of gold. The British guy will have moments of being a good person and moments of being a bastard, but his moments of being a bastard won't be undercut by sentimentality - right now, as he ruins his wife's roast, he's being a piece of shit. But even when the American man is being a bastard, you need to know that under all that, he's either not so bad or he's actually in the right.
Tangent aside - House is similar to that definition of the American comedy protagonist. He's an unrelenting asshole, but the narrative bends around him like light around a black hole to show that not only is he right, but the people and structures around him need House, for better or for worse. He's a postmodern hero who's angry and bitter, but the world needs him all the same. He's intentionally burning his wife's roast to stop his mother-in-law from coming to dinner, but it's also so he can piece together a hypothesis about how to shrink a one-in-a-trillion brain tumor that's about to kill a 14 year old ballet dancer. God knows he's an asshole, but the world needs more people like House.
That's the vibe I got from the House pilot. Seems a bit racist to have the only black guy in the cast be a former delinquent, even after being top of his class at an Ivy League school, and hired specifically for his "street smarts". House also comes off as sexist for hiring a woman for her looks. But for all his eccentricity and misanthropy and anger - he's got job security, and people around him revere him as a genius, so he can do whatever he wants. It's the ultimate American power fantasy.

Zoe Saldana stars in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"SOURCE: MARVEL
That’s not to say Marvel — along with all studios and streamers — doesn’t face some hurdles going forward. But the nature of those obstacles for Marvel are frankly pretty obvious; it’s mostly things Marvel has overcome before; and regardless of those issues and the need to address them, Marvel is still actually doing pretty good right now even amid the problems they’ve had.
So let’s just unpack what’s really going wrong, and what it means for Marvel Studios.
The situation with actor Jonathan Majors — the star of several Marvel films and streaming shows, as the MCU’s time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror — is that he faces multiple accusations of abuse, and is scheduled to stand trial for one recent case. After that case was initially reported, other accusations surfaced, as did previous public statements from years ago by performers who asserted accusations of abuse were already circulating about Majors.
So yes, Marvel will almost certainly recast Kang. Lucky for Marvel, the character literally exists across a near-infinite number of alternate realities where he takes different forms and changes appearance. Likewise, Marvel has had to recast characters in the past, just like lots of other franchise or TV/streaming series. This isn’t brain surgery, and the framing of this issue as something that could sink Marvel’s whole future plans is frankly nonsense.
Just one great example, Marvel could offer the role to John Boyega (who I’d argue should’ve been the top candidate for the role in the first place). Or maybe Denzel Washington as an iteration of Kang who sat out the in-fighting and collective efforts of the rest of the Kangs and grew older and wiser as he made his plans to take over. Or maybe Ray Fisher could be offered the role, if Marvel wants to poke DC and WBD while scoring a great casting option.

Or perhaps Marvel could offer the role to Leslie Odom Jr., Lakeith Stanfield, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Daveed Diggs, Stephan James, or any number of other fantastic casting choices to take over the role of Kang in the MCU.

The point is, the worst part of the situation with John Majors is if the allegations are true and women suffered this abuse while Hollywood ignored it. The casting “problem” is small potatoes by comparison, and is easy to solve.
So let’s look at the financials now, since a central claim to the “Marvel is in trouble” narrative is that the studio is struggling at the box office while streaming is an unpopular mess.
At the box office, it’s true Marvel hit a high point with their back to back releases of the two-part Avengers conclusion to the Infinity Saga. The $2.79 billion from Endgame and $2 billion from Infinity War elevated the final global gross for all 22 films in that saga to more than $20 billion, for a per-film average of around $935 million.
In 2018 and 2019, the MCU put up the following numbers: Black Panther hit $1.34 billion, then Infinity War topped $2 billion, then Captain Marvel scored $1.1 billion, and then Endgame took $2.79 billion. Ant-Man and the Wasp at $622 is the only MCU film in those 24 months that failed to top $1 billion.
Since the Infinity Saga ended, Marvel’s releases have taken north of $8.1 billion across 10 movies so far, with a Multiverse Saga per film average of about $815 million. The difference between $815 million and $935 million is not insignificant, but nor is it disastrous, and it’s certainly not hard to understand why it’s happening.
The 2018 and 2019 slates for the Infinity Saga benefited from a decade of build-up, and it was those last four (out of five total) blockbusters topping $1-2 billion each that provided the final heft and resulted in an even higher per film average. We are only in the first half of the Multiverse Saga to date, and so far we haven’t had a single Avengers movie in this new saga, while as noted the Infinity Saga ended with a one-two Avengers punch good for more than $2 million per film.
And then the fact of the Covid pandemic alone accounts for most of the rest of the downturn in Marvel Studios’ average box office performance. Even during the Covid pandemic, when films were flopping or going straight to streaming/PVOD, Marvel’s three releases that performed “badly” due to the global health crisis still managed to finish between $379.7 million on the lowest end and $432 million. That’s better than the DCEU can perform even after theaters reopened and box office started its climb back toward something resembling “normal” — at least for the right films, since 2023 has been a roller coaster ride for theatrical.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed earlier this year and wound up the weakest performer of that franchise at $476 million, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scored blockbuster results with $845.5 million.
Indeed, Vol. 3 is currently the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2023, both domestically and worldwide. And for the record, as disappointing as its box office was, 2023 has been so cruel to theatrical releases that Quantumania is still a top-10 box office performer.
We’ve seen one would-be blockbuster tentpole after another face-plant or otherwise disappoint, and often when a tentpole has managed a healthy box office performance it’s at a more moderate level than expected or typically enjoyed by the given franchise and/or its prior financial trajectory.
Other than Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, nothing else truly put up top-tier results this year. Fast X topped $700 million, but is fourth film in a row from the series to suffer a decline from its predecessor’s box office gross, and the lowest box office for the franchise since 2011’s Fast Five, so it’s a mixed bag there.
Besides that, 2023 saw three films in the $500-600 millions range, four in $400 millions territory, and a couple of $300 millions.
The makeup of the top 10 this year looks like this: Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Little Mermaid, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Elemental, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Notice, there are three Marvel superhero movies in the top 10. Yes, one of them underperformed, but the point is that it seems silly to talk as if audience are in any widespread or large scale way turning away from superhero cinema, or that Marvel is somehow reeling from a downfall and have lost control.
The Marvels is currently tracking toward a shockingly low debut this weekend, with most projections pointing to a $130-$150 million global opening. Without at least average holds, the film could struggle to get past $300-400 million. On the other hand, I think tracking has proven pretty unreliable these days, and I believe a significant part of these disappointing numbers is the fact a lot of people are confusing this film with being another new Disney+ Marvel show, or think it is coming to Disney+ as a film soon. There’s also the general 2023 ongoing curse to consider.
But regardless, The Marvels should’ve been a home run sequel. While we can point to the unethical shenanigans and toxic behavior of fans and of certain organized hateful online voices obsessed with attacking women-driven movies or shows, if this film flops or underperforms rather than merely suffering a downward adjustment consistent with the genre overall (which would mean a box office for The Marvels in the $700 million range, I’d say), then it’s entirely fair to call it a big stumble for the studio.
The large-scale tainting of superhero cinema by the DCEU’s overarching failure the past several years (eight films in a row across five years, all failing to reach $400 million and averaging in the roughly $250 million range) coinciding with the Covid pandemic and theatrical downturn, coupled with a leveling off — not uncontrolled free-fall or any other hyperbolic situation — of Marvel’s must-see “event” status in the aftermath of their 11-year Infinity Saga’s conclusion (and lack of any Avengers team-ups for four years and counting) has no doubt reduced the dominance of the superhero genre and audience’s previous high-level anticipation.
But that sort of heightened “event” status is impossible for any franchise or genre to maintain, and no serious person expected the genre or any one studio’s piece of it to be some perpetual ever-increasing profit machine
Neither Marvel nor the genre in general need to treat the usual ebb and flow of primacy in entertainment as if it’s some major crisis threatening the existence and profitability of the studio or genre. That’s just the natural clickbait mentality driving entertainment journalism. We should be able to report on and assess such situations without resort to exaggerated portrayals for melodramatic purposes, nor parrot claims from those with obvious incentives and ulterior motives behind any of that sort of hyperbolic claims. We know better, but that doesn’t mean the profession behaves better, and so we get clickbait and studio drama delivered up like silly reality TV, and everyone pretends not to recognize it as the nonsense it usually is.
Marvel has to recast a major lead actor, something we’ve seen plenty of times by studios and projects, including literally by Marvel themselves on more than one occasion. Marvel’s first two films of 2023 grossed a combined $1.3 billion in box office. Even if The Marvels only does about half the box office of Captain Marvel — a vastly bigger drop than the Ant-Man franchise experienced, but let’s just use a 50% dramatic decrease to make the larger point — the MCU will have grossed a total of about $2.45 billion for 2023, an average of $815 million per film.
If that figure sounds familiar, it’s because I mentioned it earlier since it’s the per-film average for the MCU ever since the end of the Infinity Saga. Marvel settled back a bit from the high per-film average of $935 million, and for four years we’ve consistently seen this same new average level of performance for their films. Again, not insignificant as a drop, but in context it’s easier to understand and recognize as not a sudden emergency situation, and I suspect most studios would be happy if they could average north of $800 million per film on average every year.
And let’s face it, once the latest Avengers movies hit the radar, we’ll see the average per film gross go up during those years, just like always, and in the long run if the two scheduled Avengers movies play at the $2 billion level, that will actually result in an increase in the final average per-film gross for the Multiverse Saga, just as those huge Avengers box office grosses at the end of Infinity Saga seriously raised the saga’s per-film average.
This is all fairly predictable, within an obvious margin of error but not frankly too far of deviation. Which doesn’t negate the fact of the downturn in average performances, but rather puts it into less histrionic perspective as solvable problems for a still overwhelmingly successful studio that’s seeing per film averages still far superior to what any other studio can claim.
On streaming, where audience trends and preferences have likewise evolved during the Covid era, Marvel
First we got the ABC broadcast series: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Inhumans. Want to take a moment to recall how did those all fair with audiences and critics?
Then came Netflix's slate, with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher — half of those got mostly good or great reviews, a couple got mixed to negative reviews, and along the way different seasons of a given show had their ups and downs. Many fans and reviewers bemoaned the general lack of tie-in to the cinematic releases, a point that's amusing in light of how the same reviewers and fans completely reversed course a few years later to bemoan the fact the newer MCU shows often try to tie in to the MCU.
So next up are The Runaways and Cloak and Dagger, shows with younger casts and less direct connection to the rest of the MCU, but both were short lived and appeared on two different streaming services.
Which brings us to the MCU shows on Disney+, overseen by Marvel Studios itself and consisting of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Secret Invasion.
While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If...? received mixed reactions, WandaVision and Loki got generally good to great reviews, as did Hawkeye and Moon Knight.
Ms. Marvel likewise received strong positive reviews, aside from resentful fans mostly motivated by racism or sexism who bashed the show (the same way angry bigoted fans harassed Brie Larson and tried to manipulate online reviews for Captain Marvel, and to this day engage in bizarre conspiracy theories pretending movies with women leads are secretly propped up by studios buying up tickets), and the same mob of boys and men perpetually upset that everything isn’t just a mirror reflecting themselves were incensed that She-Hulk dared make fun of them for being immature, bigoted, and all-around goofy.
Granted, She-Hulk did often have what looked like rushed and unfinished CGI, but it was also still miles ahead of most TV CGI and it didn’t detract from the entertainment value of the show and was generally fine. (Yes, plenty of folks just didn’t enjoy these shows, and I’m sure it’s entirely a coincidence that for many of them it always happens to be women-led shows that bother them or are declared “meh”).
Secret Wars is the most recent new MCU show (besides a new season of Loki), and it got mixed reviews that lean mostly positive but still point to trouble in the decision-making to develop the series, questions about
The point of all of this is, Marvel’s had a lot of superhero shows for a long time during the reign of the MCU, and the shows have tended to mostly get good or great reviews, while often suffering complaints of inconsistency in tie-ins vs stand-alone abilities, or iffy VFX, or questions about who is in charge and why certain decisions were made. Sound familiar? It should, because it’s a broken record of reality at this point, the sort that gets mentioned as if it’s a new development any time someone is pushing the latest version of the “sky is falling” narrative.
Not that there aren’t issues needing solutions. The budgets are too high, and Marvel — like many streamers — is discovering it’s simply not sustainable to spend $20 million or more per episode with rushed production schedules and increasingly unreasonable demands on VFX workers.
But the shows themselves are so far working and working pretty well, if you aren’t focused entirely on social media debates and media exaggerations. Most every MCU show on Disney+ has enjoyed positive reception from critics and viewers, enjoying good (and sometimes record-setting) viewership. Fixing the problems for the Marvel streaming plans is not really any more difficult than fixing the theatrical issues, because it’s easy to identify the problems, easy to see where the problems arose, and easy to see what is necessary to end those problems.
Nobody foresaw the Covid pandemic (or at least the extent of it) or the utterly shameful, failed public health response it elicited from governments and organizations that are paid and entrusted to prevent or deal with such crises. Marvel was caught off guard like every studio, Marvel suffered the same box office downturn as every studio, Marvel leaned into streaming like every studio, and Marvel is now having to make adjustments to adapt to the still-evolving environment theatrically and in streaming.
So media and fans and others in Hollywood pretending this is some shocking, Marvel-specific situation are making disingenuous claims, and they should know better. Most probably do, but the truth is more boring than doomsaying — and with everything else in the world falling apart, clickbait and hyperbole are the best way to get attention for entertainment news during a drought (caused by few new films/shows releasing, and the likelihood of strikes dragging into next year because studios put money toward bonuses, yachts, and private jets rather than pay artists, writers, and performers living wages from a fair share of the revenue they generate).
Marvel will recast Kang, they’ll reduce the number of shows and films in production at a given time, they’ll get budgets under control and allow more time for VFX work, and they’ll refocus on the approaches and measures that worked so well in the past to determine which projects to greenlight and how to return to the sense of a big shared world the Avengers have to team up to save.
Luckily, with the X-Men and Fantastic Four reboots around the corner, Marvel has a couple of big teams with lots of potential for precisely the sort of storytelling Marvel does best at the blockbuster level. They could even simply move toward a post-Secret Wars setup that lets Fantastic Four, X-Men, and a handful of other existing popular franchises carry the Marvel brand forward for a while.
We will also probably see the temporary return of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson reprise their popular MCU roles for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.
And looking at the upcoming slate, it’s not hard to see there’s plenty of reason to feel confident Marvel will continue to enjoy success, even if it’s at a slightly moderated level due to the myriad factors we’ve discussed, including the idea that superhero genre films are settling into a more consistent long-term level of popularity and performance from now on.
The next four years brings Deadpool 3, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Blade, Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars, and at some point thereafter Armor Wars and the X-Men. Of these films, the two Avengers movies are likely to be blockbuster hits, as is Deadpool 3. Captain America: Brave New World is an established franchise, lacking the original series lead but with a continuing cast and brand that I think are enough to avoid any significant downturn in box office, even if we see some drop from the peak levels of the Infinity Saga.
Blade and Thunderbolts are the riskier properties here, but the former is a previously successful cinematic brand and the latter is a team-up movie including some recognizable characters and stars. Still, this is where we might see more underperformances. Fantastic Four could likewise either perform at a blockbuster levels, or might wind up in the $700 million range, but as a key property getting lots of attention and must-work oversight, I think it’ll avoid being a problem.
Armor Wars as an extension of the Iron Man movies — and possibly/probably coming after we see Robert Downey Jr. again in some Avengers action — should perform well, and X-Men is a known successful brand getting an MCU reboot and polish as a big team franchise including younger cast members, so I think it’ll at least be capable of playing at the Guardians of the Galaxy level, if done right.
This isn’t a debacle, it’s not doomsday, and Marvel isn’t in disarray. The internal difficulties they’ve faced are frankly typical and easy to identify and solve, as much as everything else we’ve discussed here. The bottom line is this: we’ve seen Marvel Studios kick off with a big hit in Iron Man and an outright flop with The Incredible Hulk, after which Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor performed at okay levels but didn’t set the box office on fire by any stretch.
We got the original Avengers movie off the strength of Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and to really help put this into perspective I’ll point out the average per film box office of Phase One was $634 million. Phase Two’s per film average was $876 million.
Marvel worked hard to build what they created, and it’s a tremendous historic success full of ups and downs that so far have ultimately maintained an impressive level of successful across a large slate of films and series. To look at this history, this math, and think Marvel Studios is in deep trouble, struggling, or never really was very good to begin with, is unreasonable and contrary to the data and any serious considerations.

A3! Troupe Event Translation - Journey to the Colours (2/11)
Tumblr media
*Please read disclaimer on blog; default name set as Izumi
---
Izumi: Now then, today’s topic of discussion will be Summer troupe’s performance—. Tsuzuru-kun, you wrote the general outline for the script, right?
Tsuzuru: Yeah. This time, I used Journey to the West as the base. It came up when I was talking to Kumon the other day. I thought it’d be perfect for the action-packed adventure he mentioned he wanted to do. Also, the only Chinese-style play we’ve done is Mantou Fist.
Tumblr media
Izumi: I see. That’s a good point. (The story this time is set in a modern Chinese fantasy world. Son Goku and Sanzo and company, who don’t get along, embark on a journey filled with incidents…) (The action that Kumon-kun requested will be incorporated through a showdown with Kinkaku and Ginkaku.)
Yuki: The costumes will look nice considering the theme.
Kazunari: I think I’ll be able to make the designs colourful too.
Tenma: It’s also great it’s packed full of comedy for Summer troupe.
Tumblr media
Misumi: Action sounds fun~!
Kumon: It’s totally perfect for my request!
Muku: I’m looking forward to showing a stage we’ve never done before!
Izumi: Okay, I guess we’ll proceed from here.
Tsuzuru: I’ll try to work out the details a little more under this theme then.
Izumi: Please do. For the title, should we use “Journey to the West”?
Tsuzuru: We’ll go with that for now. It’s catchy and has a nice ring. But if anyone has any good ideas, then I’m all ears.
Izumi: Please brainstorm some ideas too, Summer troupe.
Misumi: Okaaay!
Izumi: As for the cast… starting off, the lead Son Goku will be Kumon-kun.
Kumon: I’m super stoked to play Son Goku~!
Muku: He suits Kyu-chan for sure!
Tumblr media
Kazunari: Yep, yep. He’s got the Son Goku vibe more than anyone else in Summer troupe!
Tenma: That’s his image alright.
Izumi: Next is the co-lead, Genjo Sanzo…
Kazunari: Won’t you let me take it on? The fact that he’s clumsy and all he does is study is sorta like my old self… Plus Tenten supported me a ton as the co-lead during Sky Gallery, so I feel like it’s my turn now!
Tsuzuru: I see what you mean. Sanzo’s image was like Miyoshi-san.
Izumi: That’s true. I think Kazunari-kun works in terms of the age difference too.
Yuki: Sounds good to me. I think he’d look good in a monk’s robe.
Kazunari: Yukki, that’s the image you have of me!?
Muku: I agree!
Kumon: I’m counting on you, Kazu-san!
Kazunari: Samesies!
-pause-
Izumi: Alright, it’s settled. We’ll have Misumi-kun as Sha Gojo, Yuki-kun as Cho Hakkai, Tenma-kun as Kinkaku, and Muku-kun as Ginkaku.
Misumi: I can’t wait to fight with all of you~!
Yuki: The foodie Cho Hakkai sounds fresh and interesting.
Tumblr media
Muku: It’s rare playing siblings with Tenma-kun.
Tenma: Let’s do this, little brother.
Izumi: The fight scene in the finale looks like it’s going to have some pretty full-fledged action.
Tenma: We can’t cut corners there even though we’re the comedic Summer troupe.
Kumon: We gotta give it our all.
Izumi: It might be a good idea to ask Autumn troupe to teach you about action scenes.
Kumon: Aw yeah! I get to rehearse with nii-chan! I’ll do my best for my first lead in a while~!
Izumi: Fufu. Kumon-kun is sure fired up.
Tsuzuru: The theme fits perfectly with our lead’s image. I’m sure it’ll be promising.
-pause-
Worker: Please take the seats over here.
Kumon: I’m starving. What’re you having?
Tumblr media
Yamaguchi: Hmm… the steak sounds nice, but the hamburg steak looks good too.
Kumon: Ah, this explosive serving special plate has fried shrimp along with a hamburg steak twice the size!
Yamaguchi: Oh, nice.
Kumon: I’m gonna order this!
Yamaguchi: Same here.
-pause-
Kumon: I’m glad I chose this amount.
Tumblr media
Yamaguchi: You’ll get hungry again quickly with a normal serving size, huh?
Kumon: True, true. I have to eat a lot on days I have rehearsal—. By the way, I’m gonna play the lead in Summer troupe’s upcoming play!
Yamaguchi: Is this your first lead since that baseball play?
Kumon: Yep! So you better come watch, Yamaguchi!
Yamaguchi: Ahh… I don’t know about that…
Kumon: EH!? You’re not gonna!?
Yamaguchi: I’m just pulling your leg. Of course I’ll go.
Kumon: Thank God~. I’m gonna do my absolute best! I’ll request a ticket for you too.
Yamaguchi: It’s fine. I always get mine myself.
Kumon: Eh~? But I’m inviting you.
Yamaguchi: Well, there’s a point to getting these things myself. It feels like I’m supporting you that way.
Kumon: You think so? But if you don’t win the draw, you won’t be able to watch!
Yamaguchi: Don’t say something so ominous. Ah, on that topic, the baseball club is going to hold an intra-squad game soon.
Kumon: An intra-squad game…
Yamaguchi: It’ll be a match between the retired third years and the first and second years. You played one when you were a first year too, didn’t you?
Kumon: Oh yeah, I did do that.
Yamaguchi: The sports ground is being renovated right now, so we’re going to play on a different field this year. Outsiders are free to watch. Why don’t you come, Kumon? It's not an official match, but for us third years, it's the last match of our high school life and it feels like a culmination of all our hard work.
Kumon: …For sure! Of course I’ll go!
-pause-
Kumon: Mannn, I’m full.
Muku: Oh, Kyu-chan?
Kumon: Are you on your way home too? It’s late.
Tumblr media
Muku: I was studying at a café with some friends from school. How about you?
Kumon: Hehe. Yamaguchi and I were eating explosive serving special plates together~.
Muku: Yamaguchi-kun and you are really close, aren’t you?
Kumon: We were a battery team back when I was active so we spent a lot of time together, just the two of us. I also got a lot of advice from him~. I have other teammates, sure. But in the end, Yamaguchi is special. That’s why I’m happy to be able to talk with him normally like this again. It’s all thanks to you, Muku.
Muku: I’m really glad to hear that. Is he coming to watch our upcoming show?
Kumon: Mhm! I invited him, so he’s coming. I’m gonna practice hard so I don’t show Yamaguchi my bad side!

The Crown S5 review?
Eeeeh I'm still not sure where it ranks for me. For me, the seasons are probably--
Season 2
Season 1
Season 4
and then the last two spots belong to 3 and 5 but I'm not sure what order they're in. It's not a bad season of TV, but it's not up to par for The Crown and I'm not sure why, entirely. Because it had moments, but those moments were not consistent. Frankly, I think they pulled a lot of punches this season, where season 4 was nothing but punch after punch--and I don't get that. Like, why make a season as inflammatory as season 4 was, and then get scared after people react to that...?
Anyway, here are semi-organized thoughts
I Liked:
Elizabeth Debicki's Performance. Though I think Emma Corrin was a perfect 80s-era Diana, Elizabeth was perfectly cast for 90s era Diana. She had the accent down, the mannerisms (looking up from underneath her lashes, the head tilts, the wry smirks), Diana's snarky delivery and sorrow mixed with frustration and yes, vengefulness, along with the sense that she's kind of a good time girl who wants to have fun? One facet of Diana that people overlook is that she was a Sloane Ranger before she married; she married very young; and I found that a couple of the things the show pointed out about Diana (her codependence with her children despite her being a great mom, plus her desire to get out and be a bit messy in her 30s) are very common among women who get into bad marriages and have kids quite young. They experience the shit most of us do in our twenties like a decade later. I thought it was very authentic, and far, far, far better than whatever little girl lost routine Spencer had going on. Basically, the Emma to Elizabeth pipeline gives me Diana perfection.
The Fayeds. The Fayed episode was one of my favorites of the season? The acting was good, the pathos were great, I loved the way you could see Diana genuinely getting along with Mohamed. Plus, that episode had the flashback return of David, and that actor is just... great lol.
Diana and Hasnat Khan. Hasnat Khan is a figure that I think is really hard to fictionalize, but the actors had good chemistry and I really liked that soft little love arc. Even if lol it's gonna lead to one of my complaints.
Diana Being Petty. I'm so tired of victim complex Diana portrayals. Diana had fire and wit and she did go after the royals at points. By no means do I think she wanted the monarchy done for (she wanted the throne for William). But the individuals? Oh, she wanted them annihilated lol. Best scene of the season was her dialing no over and over.
What I Didn't Like:
So Much Miscasting. Look man, anyone who followed up Josh O'Connor giving like... an actual career-defining performance as Charles was gonna have a hard time. Dominic is not a bad actor. But he's not it for Charles, and he knew it. He and Elizabeth lacked chemistry, which took a lot of the tension out of their marriage story scene at the season's end--compare that to Josh and Emma's fight. Josh and Emma had chemistry. It made Charles and Diana's issues even more tragic.
Imelda was also miscast, OR maybe she could've done better with a better script, but like... It just wasn't working. She's a good actress, and the truth is that Liz has had less and less to do after her great personal crisis (her marital issues with Philip) settled in season 2. But like as the season went on I kept waiting for Imelda to inject more into the role, and it didn't happen? And again, I don't wanna blame her, because the writing was just--trying to give her something and giving her very little. But things like Dominic and Imelda both skipping the Windsor accent that everyone else nailed in previous seasons was just weird to me.
Jonathan Pryce I feel was less miscast, but again he had little to do that made sense or mattered; Lesley is a great actress but they gave her like, nothing? And Margaret had shit happening lmao. She had kids to raise, her health was failing (by the end of the season Margaret will be dead in less than 10 years). I get why they did a Peter Townsend retrospective episode, but it was weird to me that that was alll they did for her, and Margaret and Elizabeth's confrontation felt so hollow.
Wasted Time. The pacing and time allocation for this season was SO WEIRD. Look, let's be real fucking honest here. What people wanted from this season of The Crown was the War of the Waleses. They advertised that. It's what we were all looking forward to. And there was really? Relatively little of that. There could've been other family dramas to get into, but they obviously didn't want to (Andrew and Fergie, Anne's divorce). And I think PM knew the War of the Waleses was the big show, and he got scared and swerved at the last minute. It was.... a choice.
And the thing is? Not anything nearly as interesting was happening for anyone else all season. So we got like, Philip palling around with his ambiguous lady friend which caused marital issues that I don't think Philip and Liz had at that point lmao. And they just kinda settled on sorta being discontented in their marriage? Which was weird because elsewhere in the season he was very ride or die defensive of her, and frankly they've seemed comfortable since season 2's end.
We had a whole episode dedicated to THE PRINCE'S TRUST LOL. And like.... yeah, Tampongate, but Tampongate was mostly used to be like "oh look, middle-aged people in love", which has always been the royals' attempts to downplay that lol. And it's like... no it's still pretty weird and he was pretty married, y'all. Having PRINCESS ANNE be like "I think that was rather noble and cool" like lol??? ANNE????? It was just weird, man. And The Prince's Trust is cool for a one off subplot, but to be the backbone of a whole episode???
Then you had shit really rushed and shuffled about at points--the Hasnat Khan subplot just flickered away, the Fayeds were introduced in ep 3 and didn't come back until ep 10.
Toothlessness. Look, PM is not anti-monarchy at all lol. But last season, there was an element of like... scathing cynicism towards the family and the institution, and that by and large was missing here. Except for in some Diana scenes, the Fayeds' complicated relationship with British shit in general, etc. That was really pretty missing here. Charles is progressing it, Camilla is suddenly ready to step up lmao, they're just a family!!! And like.... Not just s4, but all of the previous seasons had a sense of doom about it all that just wasn't here. It felt like the abuses of the family were just sort of washed away.
Which leads to...
Inconsistent Characterization. Some of this may have come from the recasting, but I don't think so? There was an adjustment in s3, but this was different. Charles ended season 4 as this like, borderline monster who's got a terrible relationship with his parents and is really pretty spineless. Suddenly, with very little explanation, he has a spine and is like, actively maneuvering to get rid of his mom and REVOLUTIONIZE THE MONARCHY LOL. Listen man, I'm not saying Charles hasn't had some successful power plays, but uh... they happened pretty recently. His mom being at death's door is what gave him that opportunity. He wasn't there in the 90s. He did not have the capital and Philip was guard dogging her.
As mentioned before, suddenly Philip and Liz are on the rocks again to give them something to do... Anne is suddenly like Team Charles lol. Elizabeth lost a lot of her coolness, and we really like... we know it's a hard time but we don't really see her have that hard time.
And it's not just people who were recast at risk here--John Majors begins the season weirded out by these freaks and at the end is like IT WAS AN HONOR AND PRIVILEGE and I have no idea why lmao. Because he mediated the divorce? Why??? A waste of Jonny Lee Miller, tbh.
And then there was just shit I didn't totally get. Like the Romanov episode. How was that the most graphic Romanov execution I've ever seen? How was that meant to indict the Windsors but then whoops never mind?
So yeah, there were like... moments? But I walked away from it feeling like they came so close to hitting the target and veered at the last minute. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it and it did feel very different from the previous seasons. I never got that feeling that I was watching The Crown, a show where you get the "DUNNNUNNNNUNNUNUN" music over someone like, mournfully sipping tea and looking out a window, and you go "my god, this is CINEMA". They never earned that lol.

The last of those who remembered his kin gave a final smile, the victor would write and tale and the vanquish become its villain. And so, at long last, he closed his eyes and took the rest he had longed for his entire existence. His head resting on the lap of a familiar companion, the smell of a familiar city, now a far off the dream, the last to enter his senses as he fell deep into the ocean below.
A smile crossed his lips, wielding the staff of his former teacher, he could finally do some use for this realm. Long had he studied and journeyed and now he understood his Master's words and the meaning of sacrifice for those he loved. All that time mastering magic and leaning over text paling in comparison and so the sounds of fire and the smell of burning magitek faded. And there on the other side of the river stood a masked woman who had gone before him. He faced her with dignity and pride and wished her sister well. Only the regret is that he couldn't see the sister off to a new journey, one last time. Oh to wander the Black Shroud and bicker with her about meaningless things one last time.
That was that. No more questions to be had. The answer had escaped him but it was always beyond him. The destruction of so much in search of something so simple. The end of the three worlds he knew in search of it and what had he to show for it? Nothing. Nothing but the gaping darkness before him and ocean flooding over his head. Nothing for all the strife he sewed as the memories finally began to rejoin in his mind. The contest of folly, the farce and performance he wove through his life times. And now, he could only rest as ill content as he had in the beginning. Until...he washed up on shore and found him cradled by countless, gentle hands. Plumed in blue and asking if he brought them apples with syrup, sitting in a sea of flowers dedicated to her return journey.
It was time to go. The armored deity beckoned. He had done as was required of him. He could do no more. And she could ask no more of him. Despite the circumstances of his birth, he fought to protect the weak. He had let his anger slip against another knight, crossed swords with brothers-in-arms, and threw open the gates to allow strangers into his city. But, he also offered them comfort with a cup of cocoa, swore loyalty to the future they were building and braced against the clutches of death itself to deliver them from the corruption of his holy city. He needed only follow the Fury which beckoned him now. And yet something tugged at him, he gave the armored deity a smile and shook his head, he had somewhere to be. She retracted her hand and nodded to him, without a second thought, he raced to the aetherial sea. He need only await for their arrival, so they may look to the stands and hear him cheer them on, so as to not lose heart.
He felt sore and weary, he lay on the ground in the meadows of a long forgotten kingdom. His heart brimming with happiness but his body weighed tonnes. He had thrown his lot in with a hero from another world, who in a twist in fate became a villain to save his own. He helped them forge a blade of light to banish the corruption that had doomed his lands. But just as one had been vanquished, another took up his corporal vessel and spent his good will for ill gain. After a great battle, it had been put to rest and him along with it. Now all he could do is lay in silence as a gentle wind caressed his brow. Spring was coming, the chill of winter subsiding, it was time to move out of the mountain town and back to a life of wandering the road and helping people. A gentle hand placed itself on his shoulder, a crafter hand for a bow on his side, a greater one roughen by years of sword wielding lifted him from his back, and one made for spell cast took his legs. He drifted off into the sea, carried by his friends. Where would they go next? He couldn't help but smile. Where wouldn't they go? As the water covered his head, he could only think about what he would give for ride through the sky on Seto's back once more.
