An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth - Chris Hadfield
Tumblr media
Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut and Commander of the International Space Station in 2012-13, writes an eye-opening account of his life as an astronaut and the lessons he's learned along the way.
It is both a fascinating story of what it's really like to be in space and how an astronaut spends their time when they're not in space, and also some of the most helpful self-help advice I've ever read. In the midst of describing the intense and varied training needed not only to become an astronaut but constantly throughout their career, and the unexpected challenges of living and working in zero-gravity, Hadfield talks about the importance of such counterintuitive concepts as visualizing failure, aiming to be a zero, and always sweating the small stuff, and how these things that have been absolutely essential to his career in space have also served him well in his daily life on Earth.
I enjoyed this book so much! I got it from the library but now I need to buy my own because this is one of the few nonfiction books I would actually want to read again.

Favorite books I read in 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WINTER'S ORBIT by Everina Maxwell
Winter's Orbit and its sequel Ocean's Echo were not what I expected, it was in fact better than what I could have imagined: I was hooked from the first line and I instantly wanted to know more about the world-building. It focuses a lot on political and military intrigues, and we follow two characters, Taam and Janain, who have been forced into a political marriage. This book made me love the miscommunication trope because it was done so well and actually added something to the story.

BEATING HEART BABY by Lio Min
I think it might be my favorite of this year. I'm not exaggerating when I say I think about it at least once a day. And I wish I could find the words to explain why I loved it so much, but i'll never do it justice. It's a story full of poetry: it's a love letter to art, to queerness, to found family, to the magic connection you can form on the internet and learning how to be the best version of yourself for yourself and for others. It made me yearn and made my heart ache because I wanted them to be happy and find closure, but also support. It was raw but perfect in its imperfection. Santi, an artist, arrives at a new school and there he might have to confront someone from his past. And there's Suwa who desperatly wants to be a singer and be accepted by his father. The first half is told from Santi's pov and then the second is from Suwa's.

THE ASTRONAUT'S GUIDE TO LIFE ON EARTH by Chris Hadfield
It was honestly one of the best memoirs /autobiographies I've ever read, but An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth is so much more than that. I'm glad that I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Hadflied himself because he was born for this. He tells his story - and the story of space's exploration- from the moment he dreamed of going to space to the three times he went to space. It was like reading an autobiography and a self help book at the same time but it worked so well, because i never felt like he was throwing these inspirational quotes at random, no he explained why he chose to focus on the positive and how it helped him.

ALONG FOR THE RIDE by Sarah Dessen
I read this book back in May, after watching the movie adaptation on Netflix. I absolutely loved how Dessen explored the family's drama and the pressure to make your parents proud, the loneliness and awkwardness when you don't feel like you fit in and finally the internalized misogyny. From the first line, I was hooked. Auden is constantly learning and being confronted to her misogyny and how it also affected her, but also how it still affects her mother, who is the reason why Auden can be so judgmental. But I never found her unlikable. Messy, yes, but I never hated her. I loved to see her growth and finding herself. And it didn't happen thanks to romantic love, but with the love and care of her friends, and even sometimes strangers. Actually, I felt like the friendships she formed with the Leah, Esther, Maggie and the boys (and also Heidi) was more central to the story, and even Auden's self-love.

SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE by Morgan Matson
I read this one during summer because I was in the mood for a summer coming of age story and it delivered. Emily finds herself isolated during the summer because her parents are working on their new play and her best friend disappeared without a trace, only leaving her a list of "quests" to accomplish. She puts all her energy into this list in the hope it will bring back her best friend in town. I love the importance of friendship: her new friends help her with the list and they all brought the best in each other. I sadly didn't write a review for this beforehand, but It was one of my favorite Morgan Matson books, and I can see myself re-reading it.
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by L.M. Montgomery
I lost count of how many times I watched Anne with an E. It means a lot to me. It was an interesting experience to read the book after, and i can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I HEAR THE SUNSPOT: THEORY OF HAPPINESS by Yuki Fumino
This is the cover of the second volume. I've read volume 1 & 2 back in September, and I didn't expect to love this manga that much. I even had to take a break at some point because the loneliness and the yearning was too much. It's such a good story about two university students, one hearing, one Deaf, who become friends and eventually get together. It deals a lot with class issues, accessibility and ableism / audism.
L'HIVER DU COMMISSAIRE RICCIARDI by Maurizio De Giovanni
It's initially an italian novel, but I read the french translation after borrowing it from the family I babysit for. I mention this because I barely read mystery / crime novel but this one was so good. It sets in Naples, in the 30s under Mussolini, and we follow Ricciardi. Since he was a child, he could see and experience the last moments of the dead, which helps him resolve investigations. The prose was beautiful and cinematographic, I could picture everything as if I was there. As for the investigation: it was resolved too easily in my opinion but I liked it. Ricciardi has to find the killer of a famous opera singer, the thing is, he died in his loge which was closed from the inside.

Partly based on both Alien and The Last of Us. Following a previous draft where everyone makes it to Jupiter, but their end goal is Europa, much like the Tsien. Instead of finding mostly harmless creatures from the depths, they instead find vicious parasites that feed off of other organisms. This won’t end well...
It had been decided, long before they reached their destination, that only two of the five astronauts would make the first landing on Europa. Whitehead and Poole, as a geophysicist and a biologist, respectively, were to take a pod to the surface of the icy moon and send observations to the others.
It had been going well. Frank had been ecstatic. But when something broke through the ice, a creature beyond imagination, he found he couldn’t leave fast enough.
“Something’s just broken through the ice!” He shouted.
There was a buzz on the other end of the line, the other three and Hal all clamouring for answers. What did it look like? What was it doing? Was he far enough away to observe it safely or should they prepare for his return?
As if in slow motion, Frank watched as the giant, tentacled, sharp-toothed monster bit into his coworker. Whitehead twitched and struggled, ragged breathing the only sound he could make.
Frank was close to the pod still, and had it open in record time. He looked back to see if Peter could be saved, and saw that the other had miraculously fought his way out of the killer’s grasp.
Whitehead stumbled to the pod as the creature disappeared beneath the freezing water again, and Frank rushed to help him aboard. He lifted off as fast as possible, simultaneously repressurizing the pod and guiding it back to the Discovery.
“I’m going to try to remove it.”
The whole crew was gathered round the table in the pod bay, where Frank had made a makeshift surgical suite.
What he had thought were teeth were actually some kind of toxic barb, and Whitehead had been covered in them. If it wasn’t the slow depressurization of his suit that killed him on the way back, it was whatever the mystery substance those monsters had injected him with.
There was also the issue of a leech-like creature, a living part of the bigger animal, stuck to the dead astronaut’s neck. Before they froze his body, they’d try to remove the little sucker and study it… and hopefully bring it back home if it survived long enough.
“One, two-!”
Frank pulled, gloved hands slick with something, and wrenched the leech from its host. There was a spurt of blood, and the thing wailed and flung itself around, trying desperately to hang on to something living.
“Get that thing away from me!” Jack yelped. He jumped back, accidentally shoving Victor closer. It swiped at him, unable to hang on but succeeding in drawing blood. It then turned back to gnawing on the big rubber gloves that surrounded it.
While Hal kept a constant feed of the ship stored in its expanding memory there were few times he was actually requested to archive footage. In this case he was asked to isolate the feed in the makeshift surgical suite and record. It would make writing the account easier and serve as an appropriate backup in case the specimen was lost.
Hal himself was morbidly optimistic about the creature, its slug like form fascinated him greatly. While the dead of the astronaut greatly upset him he thought better of it- it was not for nothing as his body had brought back a being of great study.
Dave did not share in the computers optimism. He stuck to the middle of the small group collected about the table with his arms crossed firmly across his chest. He did not like the idea of any of them being close to it. Of it being on the ship at all. While they had the means to contain it the prospect of unknown life was not as promising as he had thought it to be back on earth.
It happened fast. Blood. Hands and the gnashing of teeth.
“Shit!”
He gripped Jack by the back of his neck shoving him off to the side of the room, choking on his curses. He turns- Victors bleeding but the bite isn’t as notable as the hole bore into the neck of Whitehead.
“Kimball- your mess. You bandage. Measure first.”He shoved bandages and a camera into the man’s hands, ignoring how they trembled.
The creature thrashed against its rubber prison mindlessly. Unable to last without a host the leech shriveled within minutes of detachment, the exact timing of which recorded by Hal.
“Do you think you can get your information out of that thing?”
Prepared for the idea of alien life but not the hostility of it. There were no defenses and no reason to return to the icy moon. They’d have to be satisfied with what they had.

Do you wanna read a new web serial?
Of course you do! Everyone loves web serials. What? You're not really into web serials? Haha, what a silly joke. Seriously now though, have some web serials.
Curse Words: Spellcasting for Fun and Prophet
Kayden is a trans boy with a curse in his heart. Since he was a baby, the most important thing in his life has been keeping it dormant. Until the day he fails, until the day it wakes up, and suddenly, Kayden's mere presence is a threat to his friends, family, and anyone else he meets.
When a mage visits his house promising to teach him to control it, it sounds like a trap. All he has to do is accept a scholarship to the world's most prestigious magic school, away from his family, away from any legal or government protection, away from his life. Knowing the reputation that mages have for killing particularly dangerous cursed people, he knows that it has to be a trap. But what else can he do?
Whisked away to a fun magical world of invisible dragons, mysterious lake monsters, and a teacher who looks way too much like a Disney supervillain to not be evil, Kayden needs to work fast to get a grip on what's going on. Because somebody's trying to kill his favourite teacher and frame him for it, and if he can't understand the situation fast enough to bring the perpetrator to justice, he might be stepping into an entirely different kind of trap that he's woefully unprepared for.
Oh yeah, and the entire world is also in danger. He should probably do something about that.
Time to Orbit: Unknown
Aspen Greaves is a sociologist and pop science author who doesn't even like going to the moon, let alone deep space, so they're the last person who should have been picked to be put in chronostasis and launched at a distant star in humanity's first attempt to colonise space outside of our own solar system. But they were one of the five thousand colonists picked, so they go to sleep, expecting to be woken up in orbit around a new planet.
They do not expect to wake up in the middle of space, five years from their destination, on a broken ship with no living crew and a glitchy AI. Yet here they are, with a new goal: survive long enough to get the ship full of colonists safely to their new planet. With no astronaut training, no knowledge of engineering, and only a basic education in biology, this is a lot harder than it sounds, and Aspen will have to unravel mystery after mystery to figure out what went wrong if they want to have any hope of not dying in deep space and taking the whole ship with them.
Charlie MacNamara: Galactic Ace (on long hiatus)
Charlie was a single mum out taking some photos for her online art course when she was unexpectedly kidnapped by aliens. This, naturally, caused somewhat of a disruption in her life.
All Charlie wants to do is get home to her kids, but this isn't on the cards for her captors. She's been shanghaied by a pirate ship under the command of the mysterious runaway royal the Faceless Princess, so with an alien hivemind made of tiny flying spiders as her translator and guide, she gets to work learning enough about the ship to change their minds -- by force, if necessary.
But she's become embroiled in a struggle much bigger than the fate of one little planet like Earth, and it's going to take all of her intelligence, charisma and extremely mediocre social skills to stay alive. Because Charlie is learning that in the big, wide universe out there, nothing puts someone in more danger than being a human.

The Dimension Hopper's Field Guide is an information pamphlet in 'Warped' that will give GMs information on various alternate dimensions to use in their Multiverse-spanning campaigns!
Amongst the universes on show are:
Tumblr media
Description: UNI#000, known as Pink Skies, is a dimension composed entirely of gargantuan floating donuts - many of them sporting the signature pink icing that gives the universe its name. These donuts soar through perpetually sunny skies with no ground in sight, making UNI#000 a popular vacation spot for weary dimension-hoppers.
Points of Interest: The hole in each donut acts as a doorway that is linked to another donut hole somewhere else in UNI#000.
Hazards: Sprinkle storms may serve to decorate the donuts that float through this realm, but be careful: these rare events have been known to throw the donuts into disarray and crush unfortunate dimension-hoppers under great pillars of sugar.
Inhabitants: Dimensional travelers have set up hotels and resorts on some of the larger donuts. Here, dimension-hoppers can put their feet up, relax and unwind in a universe that reminds them that life is sweet.
Tumblr media
Description: Beyond the earth, beyond the stars, beyond it all lies The Void: the desolate ruins of a once great reality. Gargantuan gothic cathedrals are strewn throughout the darkness, their ruins floating silently in the void for countless millennia.
Points of Interest: Ancient summoning rituals have left some ruins infused with eldritch energy. Some have the ability to generate local gravity, generate portals to other ruins or to summon or ward off the weaker eldritch entities that inhabit this realm.
Hazards: This dimension has no gravity or breathable air. Colossal black holes tear at the space around them, spelling certain death for all those they draw in.
Inhabitants: Though the once grand civilization that inhabited this realm has crumbled to dust, UNI#928 is not devoid of life. Amongst the ruins float the Great Old Ones: ancient, infinitely powerful eldritch gods so vast in scale that to look upon them is to risk madness. Their spawn scour the wastes in search of rifts to other dimensions and new worlds for their masters to conquer.
Tumblr media
Description: In a universe that resembles our own, the small desert town of Endeavor plays host to a historic rocket launch: the first in human history. The town crowds around the launchpad in anticipation. Little do they know that the rocket is fated to explode, vaporising the town completely. In fact, it does so every day. UNI#321 is a universe trapped in a perpetual time loop: every time Endeavor is destroyed, time rewinds 24 hours and the loop begins again.
Points of Interest: While everyone in Endeavor is unaware of the time loop, anyone from outside of this dimension retains their memories of each loop. Beneath the town is a hidden laboratory filled with alien technology. One device in particular is a helmet that  allows the wearer to retain their memories, anything on their person, and the helmet itself, when time resets.
Hazards: Outside of the explosion and the time loop itself, there are no hazards specific to Countdown.
Inhabitants: The people of Endeavor are welcoming, friendly and brimming with small town charm. The town is also awash with engineers, military personnel and astronauts who have come to witness the launch. In the lab beneath the town, a small team of scientists are attempting to work out how to prevent the destruction of the rocket and the resulting time loop, though only one of them can wear the alien helmet and preserve their memories of previous loops.

The Darkside Of The Moon
Tumblr media
When Astronaut Chris P is chosen to be a crew member accompanying the mission to the moon it is a lifetime dream come true for us all. He sits down taking an exhaustive heavy and deep breath following an exhilarating weeks of training for his first mission into space precisely to the moon.
Hiding away in NASA’s official locker room he realizes his life is on a precipice of a truly momentous change no one can prepare him for it. The roar of the crowd as hoards of news reporters are on assignment rushing into the area and taking a seat setting up the cameras, cellphone recording and microphones.
The door swing open making way for the astronauts to file out one by one in a successive line before they grab a chair and pull it out to sit down crispy. Chris P felt the warmth of the lights softly fall on him, the chanting of the crowd is also pumping him up, the line of questioning odd but fair enough.
The lights bursting off the camera so bright, so beautiful, so delicate, like starburst in the sky blinding his vision as he poses for the official NASA photograph. You could only imagine the fascination he is feeling from reeling the moment that his dream is about to manifest into a reality is making.
Next year comes in a flash as a prepare to board the ship. He takes one last look at the beautiful sky. Sighing regret for leaving but also I thrill you write bitch freedom for exploring various of the universe. All the good in the world could never equal the measure of the joyous victory of succeeding a proving his place in all is this and in the world.

The Grey and the Dark Legacy Challenge
A six generation legacy challenge dedicated to morally grey and villainous sims.
Required packs: Get to Work, Island Living, Journey to Batuu, Strangerville, Werewolves, Vampires, Paranormal
Getting started: Aging can be set to whatever you prefer, including being turned off entirely. Gen 1 can be created alone, or with a spouse, sibling, parents, etc., and can be of any age. The listed aspiration does not have to be picked as the sim's first one; they just need to work on (and ideally complete) it at some point in their lives. This challenge is meant to be flexible and guide storytelling, not to be intentionally difficult, so feel free to make changes to the rules where you need to.
Currently play-testing. As I do, I may make some changes.
Tumblr media
Generation 1: For Peace
The more you’ve learned about the world, the better you understand just how vulnerable the planet of Earth really is. You’re devoted to protecting the human race from the wilds of space, to ensure peace and security. Some might not agree with your methods, but you know that the ends justify the means.
Career: Military (Covert Operator Branch)
Aspiration: Enforcer of Order
Traits: Gloomy, Paranoid, Neat
Goals:
Max career and aspiration

Turn 5 Sims into werewolves
Have at least one non-werewolf child (this must be your heir).
Tumblr media
Generation 3: For the Unnatural
You grew up in a household that was brutal, crude, and utterly boring. The only interesting people were the faceless whispers you heard in the trees, and the songs of sirens who drowned their lovers in the sea. You’re a romantic who yearns to fall deeper into the nether realm, and your favorite love story has always been a tragic one.
Career: Freelancer (Paranormal Investigator)

Generation 5: For Opportunity
You grew up with your parent’s fascination for the stars, but when you finally make your way into the larger galaxy, you find things aren’t really much different than they are on Earth. Money and greed still make the worlds go round, and though you’re disillusioned, you find yourself adapting quite well to this new truth.

As a member of the ever-changing galactic underworld, you watched your parent so often barely escape with their life, and the fragile nature of mortality became something you despise. You may have been raised with all the “right” connections, but you have greater ambitions than to just stay in the game. You want to build something that lasts, to be something that lasts for centuries.
Career: Secret Agent (Villain)

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

My Parents Said I Could Be Anything
One of the first phrases I heard when I was younger was "You can be anything you want to be when you grow up"
And I always thought it was bullshit that I had to grow up to be whatever I wanted
I guess it had something to do with getting a job, starting a life, but I didn't get it, after all I was still a child
And I never understood why all the adults who tried to explain the phrase looked so sad
At first I wanted to be an archaeologist; I was way into dinosaurs as a kid and all I knew was that those people dug up stuff that's been gone for a while
I imagined finding skeletons too big to be human, pots too shattered to be forgotten, children's toys too loved to not be put on display for others to see
And now I just dig holes in my own history, each one filled with an artifact I forgot I discovered
Then I found out about the planets and the stars in-between them
How they burned and exploded and made art in the sky that led people home
How a whole day on Earth is 23 hours, 56 minutes, and approximately 4 seconds; I learned that in 3rd grade
I wanted to be an astronaut
Wanted to find my way home with Polaris guiding me, wanted to see the world the way the stars do
But now I burn like I'm about to undergo a supernova, but my light can only guide you for 8 minutes and 17 seconds so be quick, sailor
When I got older I wanted to be an artist and a writer at the same time
Wanted to balance them out by making art of my characters and writing about the art I had made
It was a good system until I started getting unsolicited advice from adults that barely knew me
"Don't be a starving artist" they said, "That's a hard business to get into" they said, "Maybe pick a backup option if it doesn't work out" they said
It's the simplest phrases that can discourage a young mind; slaying the creativity from imagination like a dragon who's just trying to feed her kids with the village sheep
I put my pen and paper down for years until I decided to make art for me, to write for me
I have to make at least one of these wants come true for my inner child
In my junior year of highschool I took a psychology class because I thought the subject was fun
Did you know that it's meant to study behavior and mental processes? Not just the mind but the reasons behind every wrinkle and cortex
I sat through 45 minute classes on the edge of my seat like I was riding a rollercoaster, even if the teacher didn't make it as exciting or fast-paced as one
I still have the notes from both of his classes and I hope one day he hears this poem
I'm majoring in psychology, I want to be a psychologist of some kind but I still have time to work that out
Haven't you heard that most people who pursue psychology do it to figure out what's wrong with themselves?
Now I have to make a decision I was told was reserved for grown-ups
But how can I only choose one piece of me?
I still collect dinosaurs and hold them close on bad days
I still look up at the stars like the gods are guiding me home in their constellations
I still make art and write for people who may never know me
I still skim the DSM-5 like it's a box of "Get Well Soon!" cards from people who don't know this isn't curable
And in between the downward spirals and indecision, I think of the first lie I was told:
"You can be anything you want to be, when you grow up."

HUNTER’S MOON
Masterlist
Taglist
Tumblr media
PAIRING: Werewolf!Punz x GN!Reader
SUMMARY: You’ve always been fascinated with the stars ever since you were a kid, despite how people may have judged you for it. Sucks to be them, though, because they can’t cuddle with their werewolf boyfriend on a stargazing date.
WARNINGS: Language, implied/referenced child abuse, death mention
A/N: Werewolf Punz holds a special place in my heart, even if I don’t really like the way that I wrote this. I hope you guys like it more than I do!
Tumblr media
It was rare to find someone with a hobby like yours where you lived, sequestered between mountain peaks that scraped the sky and a hundred miles from the big city.
Since you were a kid, you’ve always been a little different from everyone else. Not enough that you were labeled a ‘problem child’; you always played nicely with the other kids, were invited to birthday parties, post-prom bashes, went on dates, and the like.
Rather, it had always felt like you were disconnected from the goings-on in your hometown. You floated through life, head in the clouds, feet firmly planted in the earth, and your eyes affixed to the brightest star in the sky.
Since you could speak, your fascination for the heavens had blossomed like cherry blossoms in spring. Glow in the dark stars? Plastered across every inch of wall space in your room. Astronaut stickers? The bane of your mother, who found them stuck in increasingly improbable places throughout the house. Star Wars? Played on almost every family movie night.
You consumed space documentaries with a rabid hunger that could only be quenched by Neil Degrasse Tyson’s calm voice. Every weekend your dad made a point to drive you out to some remote point in the wilderness, indulging your fantasies happily. There are probably pictures of you in your little astronaut costume, decked out for career day, rotting away in the attic of the old house.
Which, of course, is all just a long way of saying you thought stars were really cool.
‘Daddy,’ you’d asked one day as you’d lain in the backyard, staring up at the limitless expanse of the night sky. Your mother had put the kibosh on your father driving at so late an hour, so you had to make do with what you had at home.
You pointed towards a certain star that’d caught your attention, glowing brightly despite the light pollution from town. ‘What’s that one called?’
‘Sirius’, your father had told you, as you lay on your backs in the yard. ‘It’s the brightest star in the sky, besides the sun.’
The long summer grass had tickled at the exposed flesh on your arms and legs, but it was easy to ignore the sensation when you could watch as the Milky Way spread her arms wide across the sky. Fireflies danced through the air, thick with the cool, sweet scent of crushed plant life, and the playful breeze whipped the trees into a rainstorm of sound.
Your father had grinned, cheek pressed to the earth, crow’s feet as deep as crevasses crinkling at the corners of his eyes. All fondness. The stars had glimmered like diamonds in the sky. Even the wind seemed to laugh. For one shining moment, you had been, perfectly, incandescently happy.
Then he died, and everything changed.
It was difficult, even now, for you to recall the months that passed after your father’s death. There were no words that you could express that could capture the pain, the longing, the pure, unadulterated grief that had consumed you. Even the stars that had guided you for so long had lost their appeal.
It was even more difficult for you to recall what had happened with your mother.
You may have been young before, but you were far from stupid. You understood that, while your father may have been thrilled with your hobby, your mother was more critical.
To her, it was a distraction from what you needed to be doing: studying, forming bonds with your peers, and getting a good night’s sleep so you wouldn’t nod off in class. Although nobody acknowledged it, she’d always looked… disappointed, whenever she watched the other parents with their ‘normal’ children. Like she would easily trade one of them for you.
After the funeral, there was no one left to protect you when the dam finally broke.
You sighed heavily, the warm rush of breath doing nothing to assuage your body’s protests as heat coiled through your aching muscles. Shouldering the bag strapped to your back, you winced as you heard the heavy metal clink of the parts inside knocking together, and forged onwards; the winding forest trail ahead lit only by the sun’s dying light.
It had been many, many years since that day, and although you hadn’t seen your mother for the better part of a decade, the half-healed scars she’d left behind still smarted. You had made a point not to think about it too much anymore- what’s done is done, and living in the past only served to ruin your future.
(You would know.)
No- rather than digging up the long-buried interpersonal issues you would like to keep buried, thankyouverymuch, today you were hiking out into the woods to see a rare meteorological phenomenon that you had been looking forward to for the past year: the hunter’s moon.
You bit back a grin at the thought of it, unconsciously picking up the pace. Your second most favorite thing in the world was still looking at the stars and all the celestial bodies found in the evening sky, no matter how much your mother had tried to beat it down with harsh words and a cookie-cutter mold to force you into.
Sometimes you had to remind yourself that she hadn’t won. In the end, the only thing that she succeeded in was driving you further away from the ‘ideal child’ she wanted you to be- the ‘ideal child’ that she wanted to own.
Now? You belonged to nothing and nobody except the wilderness.
The wind raked icy claws through the trees overhead, the rush of leaves a rainstorm of darkening autumn colors and sound. It grabbed at your jacket, your bag; it pushed your body forward, almost as if it was as impatient for you to get where you were going as you were.
Birds flitting through the trees had already begun to transition from the day-dwelling species to the nocturnal- the simple two-note song of the chickadee replaced with the low, sonorous hoo-hoos of owls.
The singing of crickets that you had grown so used to in the summer was notably absent, though not surprising. It had already begun to get colder as the earth drew near to the end of its cycle around the sun, and most of the bugs had either died, migrated away, or started to hibernate.
You scratched at your arm with a scowl. Except for the mosquitos, apparently.
It didn’t take long for you to see the break in the line of the trees, and you stepped out into an isolated rock outcropping that jutted out of the mountainside, looking out over the valley below. No clouds obscured your view of the sky, leaving it an unbroken swathe of blood-orange, amber, and roseate hues.
The sun was already beginning to sink below the horizon line, swallowed by a cragged maw of cliff peaks and finally illuminating the moon’s face as it marched westward towards its zenith. The moon hung in the sky like the pendant of a queen’s necklace, large, pale, and uncharacteristically grapefruit-like- almost as though it had been stained by the last remnants of sunlight.
Gravel and drying grass crunched under your feet as you made your way closer to the edge of the point, where a large, weathered stone was wedged deep into the earth. You were glad that you had chosen to wear pants. As you stepped carefully around the mountainous scrub bushes, tall grasses, and wildflowers that dotted the clearing, prickly vines snagged at the fabric, foiled in their plans to mutilate your legs.
You sighed, a small, secret smile playing at the edges of your lips as you stopped just shy of the drop-off, letting your bag roll off your shoulder and onto the ground with a metallic thump. You could enjoy the scenery later- you had work to do.
Before you could begin to assemble your telescope, however, the sounds of the forest that you had grown so accustomed to vanished. The birds, the gentle swaying of the greenery in the breeze- even the stars just beginning to dot the sky seemed to hush.
And then, a howl.
It echoed through the valley, long and musical, and you felt your breath catch in your throat. Your heart began to race in your chest, pounding against your ribcage like a trapped bird might a glass window.
However, you were not afraid. You did not bolt from your spot on the hill, or cower, or even shiver as the sound died out into a whisper of an echo. Nor did you flinch at the dry sound of branches snapping rang out from behind you.
The wind picked up, whipping past you to blow in the direction of the line of bushes and brambles that bracketed the treeline.
You dropped your shoulders and tipped your head back. Sighed breathlessly. Then turned around, hands fisted against your hips.
“Now, I may be human, but I’m not deaf, y’know.”
For a moment, there was nothing but the sound of air whistling around you. Then, a lone figure stepped out from underneath the shelter of the forest’s shadow and into the blueness of the night; a wolf.
It was much larger than any other wild animal that you’d come across on hikes (including the black bear that you’d stumbled into once), towering up to a height that you estimated as a little over a meter, even as it stood a good distance away at the edge of the plain. It was gangly in the way that all young things are, marking it as a half-grown pup instead of a full adult.
Although moonbeams painted its outer coat- the guard hairs- silver, you knew that the pelt underneath was a tricolored mixture of pale gold, dusky brown, and the faintest hint of dark grey. It rippled as the wolf moved closer, shoving its ears forward until they strained against the muscle.
The wolf’s eyes were startling- clear and blue as the alpine flowers that dotted the clearing, and unerringly fixed on yours. What was all the more noticeable, though, was the uncanny intelligence that gleamed within their depths; an intelligence that demanded to be recognized for what it was, and not just explained away as an animal’s predatory gaze.
Your eyebrow ticked up, lips pursing.
The wolf’s tail wagged once. Twice.
You blanched.
“Purpled, no.”
In a blink, you were knocked flat on your back, and you wheezed as a heavy paw pinned your ribcage to the ground. You could barely even begin to fend off a barrage of happy wolf licks as a wet, slimy tongue swiped across your face.
“What the fuck-”  you wheezed, spluttering as the young wolf made another attempt at your face. “Dude!”
He licked his jowls smugly, then yelped as you shoved his face away with a hand, wiping the drool soaked into your hands onto his pristine fur coat. Purpled growled without any heat, whuffling at the shiny trails that your fingers at left.
“You’re so gross. I’ve never met a werewolf as singularly gross as you,” you muttered, wiping at your mouth with the collar of your shirt. You glared. “Happy now, asshole?”
Purpled grinned wolfishly, tongue lolling out of his mouth. He was, indeed, very pleased with himself.
Pushing at his broad chest, you managed to heave the furry menace off your body and send him tumbling to the dusty ground. Content with the havoc that he’d wreaked, he let you, perfectly happy to lie on his back as you brushed yourself off, grumbling about ‘stupid werewolves and their stupid puppy faces.’
If you hadn’t clued into it by now: yes, werewolves exist. The information isn’t exactly new to you, given that you’d been enduring Purpled’s wolfish assholery for the better part of two years- though, it was certainly a shock the first time he’d decided to straight-up tackle you.
“Every time I see you, you pull shit like this,” you sighed dramatically, tipping your head back. “Makes me feel bad for Punz. I only get to see you like, what? Once every month or so? And I can barely stand it.”
The young wolf made a sharp noise of protest, and, before you could blink, a teenager had appeared in place of the beast. Although he was still eighteen, he was all long limbs and no filling. His dirty blonde hair was ruffled, sticking up in every direction. His signature purple hoodie was rumpled. He was wearing basketball shorts in the middle of Autumn.
You pressed a fist to your mouth in an attempt to stifle a laugh. He looked like he had just rolled out of bed.
Purpled stretched, popping the vertebrae of his spine one by one until he was on his tip-toes. Then, and only then, he regarded you with a cool blue gaze.
“Excuse you, I am a fucking gift.”
“Where’s your brother?” you asked, completely ignoring him. “I thought you two were supposed to travel together.”
Purpled rolled his eyes. “And spend the rest of my night watching you make moon-eyes at each other? Uh, no thanks. I wanted to avoid the romance as much as I possibly could.”
You stared at him, deadpan.
“Then why did you insist on third-wheeling?”
He coughed, the tips of his ears going red, but you were distracted as your gaze flickered behind him, jumping towards the movement of another body emerging from the woods.
Punz halted a foot away watching the both of you with a mischievous expression. They were wearing their trademark hoodie, the one that was always suspiciously spotless despite them basically living in the woods, and a pair of ripped jeans and hiking boots.
His face was flushed slightly, and his breathing was heavier than normal, almost as though he’d been running recently. Which, if you had to hazard a guess, he had, given the knowledge that his pack’s territory encompassed the entire valley. He could’ve been in any part of it and had to hurry to make the meetup time.
You grinned helplessly, your heart doing that giddy little hop-skip stutter it always made when you saw them, and shyly tilted your head to the side as they approached. Their long stride allowed them to cover ground quickly, and before you knew it, they were winding an arm around your shoulder as you sunk into the heat radiating off their body.
“Hey,” you said, aiming for something cool, composed, and collected- and failing miserably. He grinned, all sharp teeth and teasing eyes, and chuckled. “Hey yourself.”
Punz hummed, the sound rumbling in his chest, and pressed a kiss to your cheek, stubble scraping against the tender flesh. Before he could pull away, quick as a snake you grabbed his jaw and pulled him into a proper press of mouth-on-mouth, feeling his lips curl into a grin against yours.
Purpled made a gagging noise, and the two of you pulled away. You stuck your tongue out at him.
“The both of you seemed like you were having fun,” Punz said idly, a hand coming up to cup the nape of your neck.
The teen shot his brother a disgusted look, still somehow able to maintain the impassive facade that he always seemed to wear. You snickered.
“Sure, let’s go with that.”
It took only a few minutes to assemble the telescope that you had lugged all the way into the wilderness, but by the time you finished, the moon was already riding high in the sky. The slight color distortion that had turned it from its usual white to pale orange hadn’t faded- rather the opposite.
Looking through the lens, even the craters appeared to be a deep pumpkin color. Fitting for the season, you supposed.
The boys had settled a little bit away from where you crouched, staring up at the sky. While Purpled had pulled out his phone, Punz’s gaze was focused solely on you as you worked, the beginnings of a smile turning his eyes into little crescents.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you so excited,” he mused, tilting his head. His hair, so similar in color to his brother’s, shifted with the movement, and you found yourself suddenly overcome with the urge to run your fingers through it. You shook your head minutely. Stars now, snogging later.
You chewed on the corner of your lip. “Really?”
Punz grinned. “Yeah, you’re bouncing all over the place.”
Feeling your face heat, you scoffed. There was no malice in the action, however, and by the stupid, smug smirk on Punz’s face, he knew it.
You hesitated, settling your fingers on the grooves of the telescope dials.
“Come on, tell me about the stars,” he goaded gently. “I know you want to.”
It was easy to give in. It always was.
The air was cool, and the ground had long lost most of its daytime warmth, but you felt perfectly fine as Punz tucked you under his hoodie, face just barely able to peek out of the neck hole. He rested his chin on your head, and you felt his whole body rumble beneath your back; you thought it was an awful lot like a purr, but knew that he would be offended if you compared him to a damn vampire.
“Well,” you started slowly, eyes large and glossy as you watched the stars turn overhead. “I know that full moons are already special to werewolves, but this one is even… more? If that makes sense?”
“How so?”
“You know the autumn equinox? It’s one of the only two times of the year when the day is the same length as the night. The other one is the spring equinox.”
“Yeah?”
“Well, this moon is the one that comes right after the autumn equinox moon, but because it's so close, it’s still affected by it. Haven’t you noticed the color? And how the sky is waayyy brighter than usual?”
Punz shifted, and you know that he was looking for what you’d pointed out.
“Huh,” he murmured after a pause, the hand on your hip squeezing slightly. “I guess you’re right.”
You snorted. “How could you not notice? It’s normally pitch black out here.”
“Maybe to your puny human eyes.”
You turned around (as much as you were able to, anyways) and smacked him in the chest. He made a mock wound of hurt, then a startled laugh as you wriggled out of his hoodie, stumbling away on giddy legs.
Darting away, you ran around the edge of the clearing, taunting him. Like always, Punz was quick to follow, the shift to his wolf form instantaneous.
Purpled looked up from his phone, taking in the scene. Punz nipped at your jacket playfully, each of his teeth about as long as your pinky finger. Unafraid, you bopped him on the nose and danced away.
He wrinkled his nose.
“God, you two are disgusting.”

Like Astronauts Adrift
Tumblr media
In the infinite silence of space, where stars whisper secrets across the void, I found something more profound and unexpected than any discovery made by humankind: I found you. Amidst the boundless dark, two souls adrift, we collided - a cosmic serendipity that defies the cold, vast emptiness.
In this void where time seems to bend and stretch, where the very fabric of existence feels so alien, your presence has become my anchor, my beacon of hope. You are the warmth in the unyielding cold, the light in the impenetrable darkness, guiding me through the abyss.
Before you, I floated in a silent world, where my heartbeat was the only sound, a solitary echo in the expanse. Now, our shared laughter fills the void between us, a melody that dances among the stars. Your eyes hold galaxies, your smile, the promise of home, no matter how far from Earth we drift.
I marvel at our unlikely journey, two astronauts, lost yet found, navigating the unknown with intertwined hands. With you, I've discovered universes within, emotions as vast and beautiful as the nebulae that grace our views. You've turned the void into a canvas of wonder, painting my life with colors unseen, emotions unfelt, until now.
In the vastness of space, where one could feel most isolated, I've found an intimacy that transcends the physical confines of our existence. We share whispers of dreams and fears, floating in a bubble of our own making, a sanctuary amid the stars.
As we drift through this endless night, I want you to know, My Andromeda, that you are my North Star, my guiding light. With you, I am no longer lost in space; I am on the greatest adventure of my life. And when we gaze upon the Earth, a delicate blue orb suspended in the starry sea, know that my world is right here, with you.
Our journey may be uncertain, our path uncharted, but with your hand in mine, I fear nothing. We are explorers, adventurers, bound by something stronger than gravity. In this vast, beautiful, terrifying expanse, we have found the most precious thing: each other.
Forever yours in and beyond this cosmic dance.

New(ish) Space Books On My TBR
A list of new(ish) books about space that are on my short list. Links go to Bookshop.org, content in italics is publisher’s promo material I’m quoting.
Tumblr media
For The Love of Mars by National Air and Space Museum curator Matthew Shindell
A tour of Mars in the human imagination, from ancient astrologers to modern explorers.
Why it’s on the list: Well, first off, I just love Mars. Additionally, I love books that combine science, media, and history. This is a brand new book (published May 18, 2023!), so it should also be about as up-to-date as they get.
Tumblr media
Back to the Moon: The Next Giant Leap for Humankind by Joseph Silk.
A scientist's inspiring vision of our return to the Moon as humanity's next thrilling step in space exploration.
Why it’s on the list: scientists are currently divided on whether the future of space exploration lies in “boots on the moon” or robots. This lays out the case for human space exploration as important and valuable scientifically. Released November 2022.
Tumblr media
The Possibility of Life: Science, Imagination, and Our Quest for Kinship in the Cosmos by Jamie Green
A spellbinding exploration of alien life and the cosmos, examining how the possibility of life on other planets shapes our understanding of humanity.
Why it’s on the list: Again, fascinated by how science and science fiction interact. This book is also brand spanking new (April 2023), this book has been getting rave reviews, and Jamie Green has a fantastic reputation as a science writer.
Tumblr media
Under Alien Skies: A Sightseer's Guide to the Universe by Phillip Plait, PhD
On this lively, immersive adventure through the cosmos, Plait draws ingeniously on both the latest scientific research and his prodigious imagination to transport you to ten of the most spectacular sights outer space has to offer
Why it’s on the list: Phil Plait (the ”Bad Astronomer”) is a fantastic science communicator - I just like the guy a lot based on his other books, Crash Course series, newsletter, and Twitter presence. This seems like a great overview of a lot of wonders of our solar system and the rest of the universe. Astronomy isn’t my strong suit, so I’m hoping that getting this on audio will help me get more star facts into my brain. Also a 2023 release!
Tumblr media
Off-Earth: Ethical Questions and Quandaries for Living in Outer Space by Erika Nesvold
A timely reminder that it's not just rocket science, this thought-provoking book explores the all-too-human issues raised by the prospect of settling in outer space. It's worth remembering, Erika Nesvold suggests, that in making new worlds, we don't necessarily leave our earthly problems behind. Accordingly, her work highlights the complex ethical challenges that accompany any other-worldly venture--questions about the environment, labor rights, and medical ethics, among others.
Why it’s on the list: Erika Nesvold is a critical voice of liberalism, caution, sensitivity, and anti-capitalism in the space industry. I’m curious to hear her thoughts about space settlement, as I appreciate her views. March 2023 release.

The End of Astronauts: Why Robots Are the Future of Exploration by Donald Goldsmith and Martin Rees
In The End of Astronauts, Goldsmith and Rees weigh the benefits and risks of human exploration across the solar system.
Why it’s on the list: balancing out Next Step is this 2022 book which argues that, outside of low-Earth orbit, exploring space should be left to robots for both financial and ethical reasons. Also, I love the cover.
