“Nobody asked about my writing” meme

Thanks for the tag, @tea-understands :) Thankfully I have a small handful of folks who ask me about such things but I do love these memes.

1: what are you currently working on?

The Big Boy Fic! The finale of Earth-197320, which I'm 99% certain I am calling Above the Shadows. And I'll have a fun update on Write Every Day June in a couple days.

2: summarize your current project

It's the fifth and final fic in a series that I started 4 years ago from an anonymous prompt sent to @amethyst-noir. I really clicked with it and she gave me her blessing to pursue it as a full-fledged fic, and here we are today.

Here's my first stab at a proper summary that I wrote for this questionnaire (tell me what you think y'all??):

2019 starts off in crisis-mode as rifts within the borders of reality begin spiraling out of control, drawing the resources of the Masters of the Mystic Arts thin. Tony now juggles the problems of a suddenly-absent Stephen, keeping his work with the sorcerers a secret, and Pepper's uncertain future. Stephen does what he can to maintain the stability of reality while keeping the promises he made. And somewhere out there, the other Stephen Strange is still hiding, putting his own plans into play.

3: summarize your current project poorly

An author split up what should have been a single work into five separate stories because she wanted to fulfill Bingo cards in 2019, leading to a series that the readers are probably going to need to reread because there's so much detail in Fic 5 that calls back to stuff that happened in Fics 1-4. Fics 1-3 match the length of Fic 4, and Fic 5 is well over the length of Fics 1-4 combined, making for even poorer fic splitting choices. Whoops.

4: describe your favorite character or characters

I mean. Do I really need to? If you're on my blog you know who my faves are.

Stephen Strange: Has an enormous guilt complex that he's been working through a lot. He got better with the help of new friends. His work has endeared them to him quite a bit.

Wong: Has taken a leadership role, but not the title of Sorcerer Supreme for reasons not yet established to the readers. Carries his own secrets. Excellent poker face, but not emotionless.

Tony Stark: Has been blatantly ignoring the Accords ever since he went against Ross's back to find Steve in Siberia and has been continuing that trend since. Seeing the feds turn their eyes on Peter changed his opinion quite strongly. The Steve Issue is still difficult.

Other Strange: He thinks the Avengers and Masters of the Mystic Arts have failed their duties and that he can protect all of reality by himself. He just needs more power.

5: post a line from your current project without any context

Closed my eyes and scrolled and went to a random page. This is what came up.

Oh, Jesus Christ. This explained so much about the man.

6: how do you get through writers block?

If it's not something health-related which just makes it physically very hard to work on items, I'll switch projects with my shorter fics. For a long fic like this, I'll put on a sprint and just power through 15 minutes at a time to get the harder bits out.

For health-related stuff (including mental), you sometimes just need to work on that first before you can be in the right space to write.

7: would you want to live in the world of your current work?

Hell no. Superhero worlds are terrible for normal people.

8: briefly discuss your outlining process, if you outline

I write an outline with the main beats of what I want in that chapter. Then when I get to the actual chapter, I'll sometimes expand the outline with more detail in that chapter section itself. I often go back to the main outline and add new things as I come up with them, or switch around elements in the story to a new chapter. This is how the planned outline has grown from around 12 normal chapters and 1 interlude chapter to 18 normal chapters and 2 interlude chapters (with potential for more growth seeing as I'm getting into some areas that have original outlining that I no longer am certain I want to use as they were ideas from over 2 years ago and the story's evolved a lot since then).

9: what is the aesthetic of your current project?

So much plot. Rewriting a lot of the end of phase 3 to push my Found Family agenda. Fix it vibes, but I think it's a natural fix it arc from the canon drama that could have happened in canon if the Russos gave a damn. A lot of character exploration into their own separate journeys and growth arcs. Pretty accurate on Marvel tones with action, drama, a bit of snark and humor. An itty bitty dash of canon romance but we all know I'm including it only because it needs to be there due to the plot and character arc reasons and not because I'm all googly-eyed for the genre.

10: what song sums up your current work the best?

Each chapter in the series takes a song lyric from a specific song and I identify that song with the story pretty heavily. For instance, Illuminating the Shadows took "The Light" from Disturbed.

For Above the Shadows, it's "Phoenix" by Fall Out Boy (who I'm seeing live in concert in a couple days, yay).

My thoughts on... Captain Marvel 2019 (#12-17) "The Last Avenger"

So I've reached the 3rd arc of this run and honestly I've been looking forward to reading this one ever since I started reading this run. Her new outfit had me really intrigued as to what would happen, and I was not ready for the answer to that question. I had no idea what to expect going into this arc so I was incredibly shocked and surprised to see it start off with Carol fighting Thor until he's dead. I was absolutely stunned to see Carol actually mean it and not hesistate for a second, all while being cold and collected. I was even more stunned when she eventually seemingly killed Thor and brought his head in front of Vox, the villain of this arc. I had so many questions as to what happened and what caused Carol to act this way. After she brought Thor's head to Vox, she went after Tony Stark. Here too i was really taken aback by how cold and collected she was. Not a single moment of hesitation but instead she's using her friendship with Tony against him, knowing he'll hesitate, knowing he won't go all out. She brings him to space and also seemingly kills him there. But then it gets revealed what actually is going on. Turns out Carol did not actually kill them but instead brought them into a pocket reality that's inside an entity known as Singularity (I did not have a living and concious pocket reality on my bingo card for this one!). There it's revealed as to why she's doing all this. Vox has her in his power by trapping her inside a suit that is able to track every movement and word that she says. She has to kill and bring all active Avengers to him within 24 hours to avoid kree refugee camps on earth to be blown up. She had no other choice but to abide as she was trapped and did not know where the bombs in the refugee camps were. After she gets her mission she decides to think of an other way. I really love how in this moment they show Carol's thinking process and how she breaks down her massive problem in smaller bits and takes it on, one step at a time, not thinking ahead but just thinking about what's in front of her. It's really cool to see how she solves problems and it further adds to her characterization and how she is as a person. Turns out that there was a highly secret project to clone all Avengers. The project seemingly got abadonned but the clone bodies were still there. Carol wanted the clones to be gone in the first place as they would pose a big threat in multiple ways. So she decides this is a good opportunity to do so. She beats the real Avengers and puts them in a pocket reality and then grabs their clone body that are also hidden in that pocket reality, and brings them to Vox. The reason she uses this pocket reality is because it's the only place where Vox can't track her. It's a pretty clever plan and she definitely had me fooled at first! As she leaves to "kill" more of the Avengers she encourages Tony and Thor to come up with a plan to get out of this mess as she currently doesn't know how.

As she goes after the other Avengers it's pretty crazy to see just how powerful she is. It really makes you think how little they would stand a chance if she actually would turn to evil. She calculates their weaknesses and exploits them so effectively it's actually crazy. However when she gets to She-Hulk things go a bit different. She-Hulk doesn't really have an exploitable weakness like the others except making her mad enough that she would mess up. Carol gets beaten up quite harshly in this fight. However She-Hulk doesn't know it's Carol as she's wearing a helmet that is covering her face. The helmet does eventually break in battle and seeing Jen's reaction to that was so heartbreaking. Upon seeing and realizing it's Carol under the helmet she hesistates and is visibly upset, the way the art visualizes this moments makes it even more gutwrenching to sit through. What's worse is that Carol has to use this moment of weakness to take her down. It's here you really see how much of a toll all of this is taking on Carol mentally, and she hasn't even had the fight she's most scared of having. The final Avenger she has to take down is Captain America, this is the fight she's been dreading the most. Because she's scared of the look in his eyes, of how they're both different and the same, how she'll have to take advantage of his innate goodness. The situation plays out quite differently than she expected. Captain America realizes it's a fight he can't win and trusts Carol that whatever she's doing now, is the right thing to do. This was a pretty crazy moment to witness and it shows how much Captain America trusts Carol. After this she meets up with everyone in the pocket reality to discuss how they're going to get out of this. Carol has realized by this point that the bombs are hidden within the kree refugees themselves, which makes the situation even harder. They do eventually come up with a plan. They realize that Vox's strength is also his weakness. They make a device that transmit a harsh sound that should be able to stun him long enough for Carol to get an opening and get the suit off her. In the meantime, the Avengers and other friends of Carol will search the refugee camps with special devices to find the bomb carrying kree's. Upon finding them they'll bring them into the pocket reality where Tony dismantles the bomb. It's important it happens all at once as Vox can detonate all bombs at once. So it's also crucial that Carol is able to distract him long enough. They carry out the plan and it works as intended. However Carol accidentally gets a sort of poison over her. It turns out Vox is partially the kree supreme intelligence and wants to make a superior kree race (if i had a penny for each time a kree tried to make a superior kree race in this run I would have 2 penny's, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice). He was trying to achieve this by using the DNA of the dead avengers to create a potion that would enhance kree. That is what Carol got over her but 100x the supposed dosage. She turns into this crazy mutated monster and goes after Vox. Eventually she calls upon Mjolnir (as she had part of Thor's DNA in her) and uses it to defeat Vox and lock him up. He eventually gets locked up in the raft. What really stood out to me is at the end of this arc, Carol reflects on what just happened and the way she worded it was pretty interesting to me as it showed how she experienced these events mentally:

"I live a strange life that isn't always easy... in fact, it's rarely easy. But this one... this one pushed me as far to the edge as I've been in a long time. Forced me to feel the full depth of the human experience in an extremely concetrated dose. Hope and despair, hatred and love, revenge and sorrow. And it's left me feeling... full. More grateful than ever for what I do have. For how lucky I am. Despite it rarely being easy." I really love how her experiences characterize her and how those experiences is what still makes her human in the end. No matter how strong or unkillable she is, or how crazy her problems might be. It's what always makes her go to her human core and make her remember that part of herself. It's really cool how they bring that sort of characterization and development over through her dialogue and inner monologue. This was an absolutely crazy arc full with surprises. I loved how it really showed how brutal Carol can be and how much of a threat she would be when she would actually be evil and trying to kill the Avengers. I also liked how each confrontation with the Avengers made her reflect on their bond and how she eventually had to painfully exploit that bond, her confrontation with She-Hulk really stuck with me. It was also amazing to see her figure out how to get out of this insanely hard situation and how it once again made her grateful for who she is, what she is and what she can do. This arc also kind of has an epilogue issue where Carol hosts a gamenight with some of her friends. That issue was tons of fun because Carol has such a great dynamic with her friends, and it was great to see Hazmat and Spider-Woman (even though they shortly showed up in the actual arc). It was also fun to see Ms Marvel be there, they have a really sweet dynamic. It's always fun when Carol gets together with her friends and this issue was no different! So that's it for this arc, this was a blast to read and it surprised me in every way possible. This was really great stuff and I can't wait to see what's next for Carol and her friends. I'll end this one with another Captain Marvel quote in this arc that really stuck with me: "You never know what waits for you. No matter how much you prepare. In fact, preparing is pointless. Because what hits you will never be what you expect. Never what you hope. Never what you dream."
