Overall Thoughts on House of the Dragon season 1: Is this worth watching?

These are my OVERALL thoughts and opinions based on the show and how it is compared to the novel. 

The show started out really strong

From the trailer, down to the first few episodes. All were amazing! The cast were serving, I always looked forward to watching it every week. That aside, everything was on point–from the costumes (those details!!!), visual effects, musical scoring, cinematography, all were top notch! Some even say that this is way better than the first season of GoT (too early to tell tbh). 

Then the timeskip happened

I know they wanted to focus on the dance so they had to do some major time skipping to fast-pace the story a little more and focus on how the dance of the dragons started. I personally didn't mind that much since I too was looking forward to the tension stirring between Alicent and Rhaenyra, although I must say that it was a tad bit different from the book (we'll get to that later) BUT I would have loved to see how Rhaenyra and Harwin's relationship developed after Rhae dumped Criston to marry Laenor and then having difficulties in conceiving a child with the latter. I would have loved to see how Laenor was coping up at the death of his lover before he met his new paramour. Lastly, the build up between Daemon and Laena's relationship (and well, more of Laena tbh). Perhaps they didn't want to bore the viewers, but I would have loved to see those side stories. Again, the time skips to me were fine. 

They steered away from the book and the first character assassination happened 

Alicent Hightower was the first casualty. In Fire & Blood, it said that both she and Rhaenyra aspired to be the first lady of the realm (this was during Viserys' reign). I have to say that it was never mentioned how Otto raised his own daughter, but she was nowhere near the Alicent I saw in the show. From the very beginning, she has always known what she was doing, she didn't need her father telling her to "do this" and "do that." While in the show, Alicent has shown reluctance to fight for Aegon's claim to the throne at first, in the book, the queen has always been vocal when it came to her son's rights and THIS is where the tension began, this is the reason why the court was divided into the party of the princess and the party of the queen. Alicent's biggest supporter was, of course, her dad and this cost Otto his position as Hand. 

To make Alicent a prisoner of her own father (in the show) was interesting. She was taught to obey her father without question and it was because of this that she first backstabbed Rhaenyra by "winning the king's heart" and marrying him. I love the rebellious stage of the princess and the queen trying to reach out, then eventually patching things up for a moment and then fucked up, that was fine by me. The moment Alicent made that grand entrance at Rhaenyra and Laenor's wedding wearing the color of her house as a way of sending a message to Rhaenyra: it's on bitch, I got so excited. I thought she was going from being a pawn to a player and I'll finally get to see a fiercer side of Alicent. 

But her character was so inconsistent

After the final time skip, that's when everything spiraled downwards for her. Idk what the fuck the writers were thinking when they wrote the story of Alicent in this season but I'm not buying this bullshit. Olivia Cooke delivered her character so well, and that's overall the only good thing about Alicent at this point. Her low-key "waging war" against Rhaenyra, and then having no clue that the greens were already plotting something behind her back to ensure that Aegon will be king and not his sister is so dumb. Perhaps she has known about their plans on crowning her son but not about murdering Rhaenyra, but come on, does she really think that the Blacks would stay still? 

And then there were other things too like, humiliating Rhaenyra at the council meeting, teaching her kids to hate her ex-bffs children, initially planning to take away Lucerys' rights to Driftmark, etc. then she suddenly went back into, "you would make a fine queen" at the dinner scene. I did sense that she still cares for Rhaenyra which was good, but I wish it was more like a facade so when Rhae turns her back, she'd be like "just kidding!" (same goes for Rhaenyra). I would have preferred that over the miscommunication that happened at the end of episode 8. 

Speaking of this stupid prophecy

This is one of the reasons why the second half of the show flopped (as far as the story is concerned). I think that it's so dumb that they made Alicent…well…misinformed about the whole prophecy thing. Then after hearing that "vAliDatiOn" from Viserys, she suddenly learns to defy her dad, and wants to protect Rhae and her family like wtf?! She becomes softer towards Aegon, and tries to prevent bloodshed as best as she can, which she did in the book. But then again, the prophecy bullshit has already messed her up and the entire first season as well. 

Viserys accidentally spilling Aegon the Conqueror's dream wasn't necessary

If anything, it steered away from the core reason why the dance happened in the first place. It turned one, if not the bloodiest war all throughout the Targaryen dynasty into a joke, Alicent didn't have to know about that dream. Her fighting for Aegon's claim simply because he exists is more than enough to challenge Rhaenyra's claim to the throne and cause a war. Had they stuck to the ascension issue and worked their way from there, this wouldn't have turned out the way it did. 

They tried so hard to paint Alicent as a pitiful character

Nope, y'all murdered her. Alicent is beautiful and she's not dumb, she can be fierce and cunning as well. She fought for what she thought was right in accordance with the law, not because of some prophecy. 

Then the writers thought that it would be fun to assassinate another character

Daemon Targaryen, why am I even surprised? I know Sara Hess doesn't like him but whatever. When I was reading Fire & Blood, I did not understand why he's GRRM's favorite. But as I went on with the story, I now know why. Daemon is one, if not the most complex character in the novel. His nature is pretty much typical for a Targaryen–volatile, impulsive, but is also protective and like I said, he will always fight for his family. 

I don't get why the fuck are they trying to paint him as the worst character when clearly there are much more terrible characters than him. I have already discussed so much about Daemon's redeeming qualities, it's bad enough that they fucked up Daemon as a dad to his girls, and now they tried to paint him as a husband who's just as bad or worse than Aegon (he didn't murder Rhea Royce in the book okay?) Like I said in my previous post, that shit was soooo unnecessary and so out of place. It's like Daenerys in season 8 all over again! I'm not saying that Daemon is a heroic character, hell no! He's nowhere near Harwin Strong, but that doesn't mean that he was pure evil (as in like evil, evil). He's the same as the other characters, they all possess BOTH good and bad sides that's why I was invested in him and in so many other characters.

For the record, none of them are purely innocent

Except for the babies. That's what HotD's edge over other fantasy shows, it's not a typical hero saves the day kind of story, it's about how far are you willing to make your hands dirty for your ambition, and if losing the people you love and care about is really worth that something you want so badly. 

By the way, they really love accidents don't they?

Don't bullshit me with Aemond being Aemond, who initially was terrorizing Luke for fun and him accidentally killing his nephew was unintentional, that's not quite Aemond at all. Like I've said before, he's a raging bitch. If I were Aemond, and I lost my eye because of my nephew–accidental or not I will never forgive him. Aemond has hated Lucerys (and his brothers) for so long, even before Luke accidentally plucked out his eye. And every single time he sees him, he always has this urge to kill him. He is also very volatile, had they stuck to the book and planted the same scene in the show that triggered Aemond's anger, that would have been enough reason for him to act impulsively and kill Luke. 

Luke's death being written off as accidental, to make the greens…hm…how do I put this? Less terrible? Is also dumb. The greens and the blacks know wtf were they getting themselves into, it started with the question of succession, then along the way Rhaenyra and Alicent's families had hurt each other which made things worse, and that paved the way for the dance of the dragons. No prophecies, no stupid accidents. 

HBO has a habit of starting off their shows so well and then fucking it up at the end

They really fucked it up the way they fucked up GoT. They outdid themselves this time though, because it only took 1 season. Fire and Blood is literally a history book that was written based on contradicting accounts, meaning the screenwriters had options to choose which one of the accounts was more credible and made more sense (though the very core of the story is the same). They steered away from the novel, fucked up the most important parts of the story and made it worse. 

Idk how the fuck are they going to redeem themselves in the next season, but hopefully it gets better. I'm still crossing my fingers that they'll be able to pull this off despite of what happened in s1 and I'm looking forward to it. 

Is House of the Dragon worth watching? 

Yes, but watch at your own risk 

I love the actors, the technicalities, props, costumes, etc. The first half was really good, but when it came towards the end… 👎 plus I hated how they wrote two of the show's major characters (I don't even know how many fucks I've said already bc of this). 

However, I still think that this show is entertaining. The watching experience was exhilarating, and overall I enjoyed it.

We are back, 8 years later. Why not keep a daily journal of our adventures again, so here we go.

Day 1: Tailwind

It seems these days when you take a red eye there is a tailwind. No complaints, just noticing. It isn’t right to complain about tailwinds…bad mojo.

We left JFK around 615pm Saturday, July 30th for Milan. An accident near JFK made it a little tighter than we hoped…perhaps 15 mins before boarding started. Sleeping wasn’t great on the 7.5 hour flight. Dinner was good, a few episodes of The Last Dance for me, Dungeons and Dragons or straight to sleep for others.

We got our 9 passenger VW van (stick shift) and away we went to Lake Como where Stacy had arranged a lunch. As we were approaching the restaurant we saw what looked like Old Town and found a parking spot. Following a local family with a stroller we hit the gold mine. Slowly it changed from sleepy, shutters closed, walking between castles to vibrate market with coffee shops, a beautiful church and lots of people. I tried my first coffee - cappuccino - which wasn’t bad, but I don’t think I’ll be an addict anytime soon.

Putting our plan together to have lunch and get into Milan for a tour of the Duomo Milan - we bought tickets and split up to position the car for a quick getaway. We discover the intricacies of driving in areas that are also plazas for pedestrians - not even sure cars should or could be allowed in, but they were.

Lunch over looking Lake Como was sensational. Private club to the left, lake in front and smiles all around. A nice walk, the sights of water are great for fighting off jet lag.

We drive a little more than an hour to find our airbnb next to a canal, drop off our bags, and zoom off to the Duomo. Again, cutting it tight, the last people are allowed up to the Terrace at 410 and it was 405ish. Not sure what this was all about, we get out of the elevator to find ourselves on the marble roof of a massive cathedral - seemingly as large as any other. It seems to be on the back end of a complete cleaning and restoration project. The detail at the top - where it can’t be seen from the street, is incredible. To walk around in the shade and the sun, was unlike anything we have ever done nor will likely be able to do again. No way you can do this in the US; that said, it was a brilliant way to draw visitors in, have a chance to talk about God, (re)introduce God, create a moment to be grateful, pray for others, imagine what it must have been like to…

For everything I could remember, it seemed like the grandest church I have ever seen. At least 60 marble columns that seemed at least 8 stories tall. FACTS: it is the largest church in Italy, yes largest; 3rd largest in the world and construction started in 1386. There are 52 internal pillars that are 11 feet in diameter and 78 feet tall. It has more statues 3,400+ and gargoyles 135 and 700 figures, than any building in the world. It was incredible, both in beauty and in scale. To imagine this was built so long ago and still a marvel, is incredible. Check the video below of the opera singer outside the Duomo that you could hear singing on the roof, it was like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.

No trip to Europe is complete without at least one church stop, so after checking that off the list we went to our airbnb, an apartment with AC near a main metro stop. After watching Friends episode, the showers started, mom and I went to grab some groceries and dinner. I went to bed about 7 and I’m sure by 830 all was quiet. It had been a great first day that we all powered through.

Day 2: Just like new

Alarms had to be set for 930 to make sure we didn’t sleep to late. We needed to give ourselves time to be out by 11am and on to our next adventure, which was the Cinque Terre town of Monterosso al Mare. About a 3 hour drive toward the Ocean, we got our first taste of winding, narrow roads that seem like Cat Rock Road. A temperamental transmission rearing its head and opposing drivers that seem to like the middle of the narrow road made it a good intro for the legendary Amalfi Coast road ahead. Our mirror got its first hit, but once we got to our destination we realized it just popped into place and it was just like new.

The drive into town and to our apartment was only doable with google maps, it would be hard to describe otherwise. Our parking spot could only be introduced to us with video, again to hard to describe in native language, much less another. It required a key, a gate, faith and being good at using the clutch going up hill. The walk back was twice as quick, again, with a sense of adventure, a little faith and lots of luck, we found a trail as if we were locals.

Quick change and head to the beach - smiles and happiness were instantly found in the blue waters of the Ligurian Sea. A big rock was a great place to swim out, climb and jump back into the water - Piper holds the record for number of jumps.

Again, I’m reminded the common happy place is near water, ideally a beach with waves.

A walk, a return to the apartment, showers and a plan for dinner emerges. Catina Miky is found and devoured. Date night for me and Stacy with the kids at a separate table. Both tables started with anchovies, which is the speciality of the area, which was great. Stacy and I had two more fish courses of specialities but still saved room for gelato. Two and half hours for dinner in Italy requires the neutral gear; perhaps at some point I’ll be able to be so chill, I won’t need to ask for the check.

We head out of the restaurant to find a full moon so close it seemed we could reach out and touch it.

Headcanon for an AU Scholar:

Zuko is part of the Theater Club, and they have asked the Dance Club for their help with a play (original and written by the Theater Club) that they will do at the Summer Festival.

Aang is the president of the Dance Club, not only in charge of helping with the choreography, but also staying late to help Zuko with his dance because he plays an important character.

When he was courting you he tried to impress the hell out of you by bringing you his biggest meals, showing how strong he is when you watch him defend his territory against enemy clans or rouge dragons, will also pull risker moves

Would also give you quite a few gems that he picked himself

Now that the two of you are together, he's more protective of you then ever

good thing is no one will try and flirt or try to court you since they don't want to face Megatron's wrath

likes taking you on patrols, and hunts with him, he likes to show off on these too whether it be areal tricks or his hunting abilities- this man likes to show off

If you ever give him praise for these things he will get an ego boost, or hell even if you give a impressed look or whatever he'll still get a ego boost

Sometimes he will take you onto flights, just flights no scouting so you two can just relax and have a lil' fun with showing off areal tricks, though these flights are uncommon

But if you don't have wings, he'll go on a walk with you, still going to fly over you for a bit. Or if you let him he'll carry you

Your den is on the side of the mountain(like this), the opening may be a tad small but the inside is huge so the two of you can fit just fine and still have room to move around

megs would clean your scales as long as your clean his in return

He won't initiate cuddling, but if you do he won't oppose it. And cuddling with him usually leads you two to sleep with your tails wrapped around each other, wing drape over you, and his body protectively curled around yours

when Dreadwing is courting you, the gifts -animals, - they would slowly get bigger and bigger, till you had a oddly large buck on the outside of your den. or he might preform a courting dance

now that the two of you as officially mates- he's extremely protective of you(& he knows you can take care of yourself.) He just doesn't want to lose another loved one.

If anyone tries to court you, they probably will get killed, or a very terrifying glare, it just depends on who it is

He prefers to go on hunts and patrol trips alone, mainly so you can guard the den but also so he can focus -you distract him easily- but if you insist he'll take you with him while trying his hardest to not get distracted

He prefers to use traps instead of traditional hunting but depending on what your hunting if it's too big or smart for the traps he's willing to use traditional hunting, and when he does he's silent as a mouse and extremely focused, if you ever distract him you will get a soft slap with his tail and an unamused look

He doesn't mind you distracting him on patrols, since where your territory is located it's someplace that not many venture due to it being a secluded area that's very hard to navigate if you've never lived there for more than a year or been born there

But if there happens to be a dragon venturing into your territory, you or he will scare the intruder off if the person didn't seem to need any help, like medical help if that's the cause then Dreadwing already has a den prepared so no one will find the location of your actual den

Your den is located in a secluded forested area, away from where the largest clans were, he retreated to the forest after he left the Deceptions And it's where he found you

The entrance to your den is covered/surrounded by trees and bushes with a pathway leading up to it, the cave also connects to a waterfall so you two don't have to worry about water, and always have a fresh and clean supply to drink from and bathe in(ex: photo 1 and 2)

If you ever decided to get playful when the two of you are batheing in the water and cleaning yourself, he will gladly indulge you, though, be careful you'll get a whole ass wave in your face cause Dreadwing doesn't hold back

now that you two are mates hes much more playful with you, so be prepared to get tackled and into lots of play fights

If any one trys to court or flirt with you, they will prob be killed or threatened, it depends on the person

But when he's not distracted on hunts and patrols, Breakdown can get shit done. He's a very good hunter despite him being a tad slower then most, he can still be very quiet and light on his feet.

The entrance of your cave isn't really shielded but no one can see through it due to the land above shadowing it from view so you would need to get up close and personal to see what's inside. JK's Birth time analysis

First and foremost, I’m just doing this to occupy my mind in something else while I go through some stuff, I will continue to use the general consensus of the community for my astrology readings, I’m just doing this for fun, remember that we as fans are in no way entitled to know JK’s exact birth time, these are just fun educated guesses on some alternative that has arisen.

Now, I must say, when I first started the astro part of my bts blog I immediately thought 1 pm for JK’s birth time, I don’t have any factual backup on this one, I’ve talked about it before, I am kind of a human tarot deck lmao things sometimes just come to me. So I started roaming around and I found that JK’s libra rising made sense to me, and it was a general consensus for his readings so I said sure let's go. You know that I endorse and adore having conversations with you guys, my craft isn’t perfect and no one else's is so it is great to hear every opinion to forge our own judgement. I do only present to you information that I can back up, which is why as much as I’d love to I won’t be taking into consideration my own personal hunch on the info I’m about to present you, although you can read it as subtext when it is in italics like this hello this is an inner thought of marinette’s.

SO the big deal: Is JK a libra rising or is JK a sagittarius rising? General consensus says 8:04 am as speculated time of birth, some others say 1-2 pm.

Either way, JK’s sect remains nocturnal so there’s not much to go from there.

My craft is more oriented towards intersectionality so I don’t like to go by what we are able to see about him as an axis, more like confirmation about it. Idk if it makes sense. I just don't trust seemingly scripted content that much to run my analysis based on it. Everything mentioned about JK Jyestha makes sense when looking at the content presented, and it will make even more sense once we take a look at some other non western astrology systems. Again, I am not well versed in vedic astrology so right off the bat I would fight the conversion system rather than the information presented.

In here, the main aspect I can relate JK to is Cancer MC, MC represents your public self, as well as the success level you might experience. I myself, see a libra rising fitting, perhaps if we were to trial and error it, some other might come out but honestly, these readings are a hobby and while I dedicate myself to my craft, I certainly don’t have the time that it would require to analyze each placement so I can see for myself which I find the best fitting out of 12 signs. But hey, this was a fun educational opportunity to dive into other practices.

gonna be straight with everybody here, I have two (2) separate AO3 accounts (mostly just to stay sane lmao) so if it’s all the same to y’all, I’ll probably be talking about both.

How many works do you have on AO3?

The last fic I posted on my original account, CrazyPrepared, just pushed me over the edge into 40 fics, which is pretty cool, but over on onceandfuturewarlock, I’m currently back at 31. I have zero explanation or justification for this, except that a village full of singing dancing cartoon trolls got a hold of me back in 2016, and they have yet to let me go.

What is your total AO3 wordcount? 

On CrazyPrepared, all my fics add up to just a little over 94k all in, while onceandfuturewarlock drags in 185k, so add it all together and we’ve got 279k.

How many fandoms have you written for, and what are they?

I’ve been writing fanfiction since 2005, so it’d probably just be easier to tell you what fandoms I haven’t written for at this point lmao but currently, the only fandoms on my CrazyPrepared AO3 would be Trolls, How to Train Your Dragon, The Greatest Showman, The Lorax, and Treasure Planet, while my onceandfuturewarlock one is just Merlin with exactly one (1) fic for The Umbrella Academy tossed in for spice.

Looking to add more Treasure Planet and Umbrella Academy fics to my roster next year, when I have a little more free time, but we’ll just have to see how that goes (especially because I already have FOUR multi-chapter fics lined up for Trolls in 2022).

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try my best to respond to every comment I get, because I think it’s very kind of others to stop and give me positive encouragement or honest feedback on my work. The encouragement tells me to keep doing what I’m doing, and the feedback helps me see what I need to work on, which is always helpful because i am genuinely just a chimp playing with alphabet blocks over here. i have no fucking idea what i’m doing.    

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Kind of feel like that title should go to Heart on His Sleeve, but you disappear (without anyone noticing) and Mistletoe definitely don’t have the happiest conclusions, and a lot of people seemed to find Heir a bit bittersweet.

Do you write crossovers?

Not typically, but to be fair that’s mostly because as a general rule of thumb, I don’t write a fic unless I’m really passionate about it - I just don’t have the time to write a full-fledged fic for every single idea that goes through my head, much as I’d like to - and no crossover has ever really grabbed me before.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I am simply too cool and sexy to listen to the haters ✨

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

On occasion, yeah, I’ll play around with some steamier / sexier fics, but it’s not a big interest of mine, so it pretty much never gets posted even when i genuinely like how it turned out. it’s just not what I’m here for, but I don’t have anything against it.

Everybody got their fics stolen in 2012-2016 Fanfiction days LMAO. It was like a Rite of Passage.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I’ll run a new fic past a few writer friends that aren’t busy when I don’t feel 100% sure about it, and though @drillbeeautomaton doesn’t usually beta-read for me, she has been an Unwavering Pillar of Support when I’m having a 3 AM breakdown over my latest fic and for that she is an invaluable member of my Writing Squad LMAO

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Probably Branch / Poppy from Trolls. No other dynamic has grabbed me like that one. 

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

If we’re going way back, the first fic I ever wrote was a Spider-Man one-shot (yes, the infamous 2002 version with Tobey Maguire, please just let me be cringe in peace) but the first fic I had the guts to post online would have been a How To Train Your Dragon AU. Can’t remember all the exact details, but I do remember it was a modern-era high school AU, and it was absolutely terrible, and it has since been scrubbed from the internet. (Of course, nothing ever truly leaves the internet once it’s up there, so I’m sure an archived version of that fic still exists somewhere, but there is no way I’m looking it up. Let me have my illusion.)

What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

You know, I think I’d have to say that title goes to only the sun. Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s not the greatest, and it’s actually my least popular Trolls fic, but it was nice to settle into Branch’s mind and just... wander around in there for a while.

The Voyage So Far: Thriller Bark

the tone of thriller bark is super fun- the combination of horror and comedy is done really well, and i like how it’s set at the very start, with the introduction of a seemingly terrifying situation and character (brook and his ghost ship) that are very quickly revealed to be anything but. 

i also like that we hear singing and see music notes before we ever even see brook. we’re associating our musician with music before we even know him. 

brook’s recruitment is delightful, and so very luffy. of course he would want a talking skeleton musician on his crew, and of course he wouldn’t be fazed by brook in the slightest except to think he’s cool. i love him a lot. 

for the most part, thriller bark isn’t actually scary despite its horror theming- but it does get some good moments in, and of them, i think the reveal of cindry’s room is definitely the best. it’s not scary, necessarily, but it’s deeply creepy, and only becomes more so when you learn why it’s like that and what exactly hogback did. 

i love how team-based thriller bark feels. especially immediately following water 7/enies lobby (in which two crewmates leave and the crew has to deal with a ton of internal strife) and preceding sabaody (where the crew gets separated), it’s just so nice. it’s most obvious in the team fight versus oars (and i’ll get to that later because i LOVE it), but also in smaller moments like robin and franky’s team fight against the spider zombie.

the team just feels so cohesive in thriller bark, and it’s really good. robin and franky are the two newest crewmates, but they already trust each other enough to pull off some fantastic teamwork. 

usopp is really good in thriller bark. he also has the best outfit in this entire arc. 

my two favorite fights in this arc are usopp versus perona and zoro versus ryuuma, for very different reasons. 

zoro’s fight with ryuuma is fantastically cool, and i really like the level of respect and understanding that seems to exist between them. you have an ancient samurai and a modern samurai, separated by several hundred years, dueling it out to the best of their abilities- it’s really just awesome. 

usopp’s fight with perona is very different, because they’re both people who hate fighting directly and will avoid it whenever possible. their fight is a mess of diversions and distractions that makes usopp’s moments of courage and triumph, like sticking his hand into a bear’s mouth, not to mention his ultimate victory, all the more satisfying. 

i just really like seeing usopp grow and accomplish things!!

i’m aware there’s an argument to be made that the character we meet in this arc isn’t really ryuuma, because ryuuma is 1) dead and 2) possessed by brook’s shadow, but it isn’t going to stop me from saying ryuuma is awesome. 

the clouds of fire he’s frequently shown with are also gorgeous, and definitely evocative of the style oda will later use to draw wano, which is a very cool touch. 

everything about cindry makes me so, so sad. 

i’d also argue that the fact that she overcomes hogback’s conditioning by finally expressing emotion, first by crying and then by smiling, is the first manifestation of the same thread we’ll later see with koala and the slaves of the celestial dragons. one piece says over and over again that there is no point where someone stops being human, no matter how much agency they’re robbed of. 

i just think nami giving her attempted rapist several thousand volts to the face is very very sexy of her

like i mentioned, the crew against oars is such a HIGHLIGHT of this arc. i think it’s one of the only times we actually see the entire crew focused on a singular opponent (the only other case i can think of is the pacifista and then kuma at sabaody), and it’s just so much fun to see. 

i also appreciate that the strawhats carry the first half of this fight without needing luffy to be there. he might be their captain and the linchpin of the crew, but they’re still a crew when he’s not around, and still very capable of working together without him. 

this is just still one of my favorite gags.

continuing re: the team fight against oars, the final sequence where the entire crew coordinates for one final attack, some of them working to incapacitate oars and others to weaken him and other to position him just right for luffy’s final blow to paralyze him- that’s the GOOD SHIT.

i don’t know that there’s much i can say about zoro’s confrontation with kuma that hasn’t already been said, so all i’ll say is that zoro’s loyalty to luffy is absolutely staggering, and hits me in the chest every time i so much as think about it.

zoro has the second “luffy’s going to be pirate king” moment, i believe, after usopp in alabasta, and definitely one of the most memorable. 

there’s something about luffy on top of brook’s piano that always delights me. i think this is their dynamic in a picture: brook playing music, and luffy listening, and talking, and cheering him up. 

there’s something about the ending of thriller bark that really hits, in a way not really shared by other arcs. there’s a certain finality to it, a swan song. i think it was sarc opbackgrounds who pointed out that unlike most other character flashbacks, which come at the middle of the arc to add extra weight before the climax, brook’s comes at the end. the battle’s already finished, and now it’s time for him to close out the last fifty years and bid farewell to his old crew before setting sail for a new dream. 

it’s really nice. this is how the rumbar pirates get to go out: singing and dancing, after the battle’s already won, as their last survivor finally gets pick his hopes and dreams back up again and set out to sea once more.

it’s not a panel, really, but i feel like i have to include binks no sake in here. for one, it’s a really good song and sticks in my head like glue whenever i so much as see the lyrics. second of all, it’s the pin that holds this ending together, the shared point between the past and the present. the rumbar pirates sing it for their final performance and they sang it for laboon years before; brook sings it alone to himself on his ship, lost in the fog; and the strawhats celebrate and dance and sing it at the tops of their lungs.

i’m a sucker for a good musical throughline, but i think this is probably the first time i’ve ever seen it done well in a fucking text-based medium. 

i’m happy for him :’)

So this is going to be my attempt to summarize the newest episodes of the fairy gala event (episode 1 to 10) of twisted wonderland.

Again, spoiler alert since I’m about to write out everything that happened, and I apologize for my grammar in advance.

Both Kalim and Jamil are asking Crowley what is going on, the warm Scarabia dorm suddenly started to snow -> and on their way here, the mirror room was hot like oven -> Crowley explains how temperatures in this school are kept by the fairies and they use a magic stone as a source of energy, so maybe something happened to the stone -> so they all went to check -> the stone was gone -> Crowley called for all dorm leaders for an emergency meeting

Crowley explained what happened -> Azul mentioned about the big fairy in the room -> Malleus “are you saying, that I, the next in line for bramble valley, will do some petty crime like this?” -> Azul apologized -> Kalim “nobody here think you did it, we just want you to tell us if you know anything related to the topic, anything about fairy.” -> Malleus mentions how he saw an unfamiliar fairy when he was taking a walk yesterday, it carries a rainbow color stone with them and was around botanical garden -> everyone headed towards there

The fairies are crowning a bigger fairy -> that tiara has the missing magic stone on it -> Malleus recognized the bigger fairy, that is the queen of fairy town, and if she’s outside in time like this, it’s likely that she has chosen NRC as the location for fairy gala -> Malleus also explains that fairy gala is when fairies dress up in elegant clothes and participates in a fashion show in celebration of spring -> Leona “fashion show? Don’t joke with me, let’s just take the magic stone now” -> Crowley disagree since he don’t want to anger the fairies that’s controlling the temperature of school -> since the celebration of fairy gala last around 3 months, if they don’t get the magic stone back, the school won’t be able to function for 3 months ->

Crowley “why do none of you look motivated!” -> Riddle “it’s not our job after all.” -> Vil “it should be you, the school principal’s job.” -> Crowley then announced that if this problem keeps going on for 3 months, everyone would have to repeat for a year -> no one want that to happen so they went back to brainstorm on how to get the stone back

Kalim “Malleus you are also a fairy right? How about you go and just ask them nicely?” -> Malleus ”there’s many different types of fairies, from thistle fairy to dragon fairy like me. Their size and languages are all different. And it’s not guaranteed that we get along, just like humans. Besides, if I just step in, the smaller fairies will probably run away in fear.” -> Leona “tsk, so useless... if we can’t do that, only way left is to take it by force right?” -> Azul “maybe there’s someway we can take it without being noticed?” -> Vil suggests to switch that tiara with a fake one -> since it’s a big event, it’ll be easy to sneak in too -> Crowley “sounds like a good idea, it would be nice if we can have something to disguise ourselves as fairies..” -> “IN STOCK NOW!” -> Sam says he heard about this from his friends on the other side so he brought some fairy dust, which is the power source for fairies in fairy town, so if we sprinkle it on, fairies would register us as part of them -> Crowley bought it with school budget -> now they are trying to decide who’s going to sneak in fairy gala -> Malleus mentions that fairy gala is the place where only upper level fairies gather -> Sam also said that he heard the theme of fairy gala this year is “exotic”

Kalim “what’s wrong? Is there anything on my face?”

Leona “hey, stop staring at me.”

Malleus “exotic to the fairy town... that will definitely be you two.”

Vil “yes, it would be rare for them to see werehumans or the culture of the desert.”

Azul “and no matter how much Leona has fallen, he’s still royal, and Kalim is the son of a rich family.”

Riddle “won’t that means they are used to parties like this?”

-> Azul then left -> Malleus left too since he wasn’t invited in the first place -> Kalim happily took the position -> Leona refuses ->

Crowley “Kingscholar, if Asim failed and the spring won’t came, wouldn’t it bother you the most? As a feline, you won’t be able to use your full power if the winter just keeps going. Most of Savanaclaw students are werehuman too, and there’s a lot of them that can’t do anything if the temperature changes right? Savanaclaw’s power will go down greatly, are you... really okay with it?” -> Leona then agrees to join -> Kalim was excited and ask if he can bring Jamil -> Crowley agrees and suggest Leona to bring someone too, since he don’t want Leona to ditch halfway through -> Leona decided to bring Ruggie along -> Crowley called for you to work on it

In ramshackle -> both Jamil and Ruggie are complaining about Kalim and Leona drag them into troublesome things again -> but if they didn’t everyone has to repeat a year -> they finally stopped fighting and started to plan it out -> Kalim suggests to just use magic -> but fairies are really sensitive to magic, so it’ll fail right away

Ruggie “we are magicians but can’t use our magic, this feel so hopeless.”

Leona “i-diot, this is the reason why you are here, Ruggie.”

Ruggie “me?”

Leona “you’ll switch the tiara with the fake one... by using your hands, directly.”

Ruggie “...EEH!!!! ME!!???”

Ruggie mentions how it’s actually harder to steal something that’s on top of someone’s head like that -> Leona ask how many seconds do Ruggie need to do it -> Ruggie “15” -> Leona “make it 10” -> Ruggie “where did that 5 seconds go!!!” -> Leona “you could do it easily anyway” -> Ruggie “darn you see me right through” -> Ruggie “but if you can’t distract her, it’ll still be tough for me.” -> Kalim suggests to make a parade for distraction -> but only 4 people can get in the event -> Jamil suggests to do some performance to distract them on runway -> Grim and you has to support Ruggie -> so rest of them has to go on the show -> but all of them are super amateur at fashion shows -> Jamil says he has an idea

He brought Crewel and Vil -> then Crewel gives them some clothes ->

Vil ask them to show some walks, since no matter how pretty the clothes are, if the person’s posture are bad, it’s going to be a waste anyway

Vil “really... it’s surprising.”

Vil “you can actually walk this elegantly...”

Vil “...you did a great job, Jamil.”

Vil “Kalim too, your posture is really proper, is it because of the education at home?”

Kalim “is it? Hehe thanks, but I think it’s because we liked to dance.”

Jamil “Kalim has been learning the traditional dance since he was young, and I have an interest in street dance.”

Vil “compare to that... Leona, what’s with your lame walk. Your feet are dragging, your postures are wrong, and”

Vil then completely roasted Leona -> Crewel “for a bad puppy like Kingscholar, shouldn’t we teach him how to walk on twos first? Or else it would be the same as letting a new born kitten on runway.” -> in the end they decided that Leona is just going to do a walk while Kalim and Jamil doing dances to grab attentions -> and then the training starts

Vil commented on Kalim has beautiful moves but always make mistakes on swings, in comparison, Jamil made no mistake at all but it felt lacking because of it -> Leona on the other side, has vases full of water on his head and shoulders, he has to walk around the room without spill anything -> to make sure everyone can do great on runway and remember everything, Vil announced -> if they sit without Vil’s approval they’ll have to do 500 squats -> if Leona spills the water again, he’ll have to do wall sit for an hour -> if either one of Kalim and Jamil made a mistake they have to do three legged race around the school -> Leona “ordering us around like that... who do you think you are!?” -> Vil “I’m the world’s super model... Vil Schoenheit sama!!!!!”

okay listen im aware this is probably an incredibly unpopular opinion but only like 1/3 (maybe even 1/4 actually...) of level up is actually necessary whatsoever

some personal thoughts under the cut, im salty oopsy doo

attitude city cuts off so many little nice comedic quips that i love this song for (the whole ‘ninja brian, can you lay down a sick flute solo for me? thank you’ for example) and just in general the general vibe of the song is not so. over the top supposedly badass as the original. sorry not sorry. i give it to tho, the instruments sound absolutely amazing (through the whole album really, twrp definitely brings it here) and the lyrics are much better pronounced. other than that, this song really didnt need a remaster, i dont understand why its here tbh. its too new for this, even if the original album is from 2015

again, unicorn wizard is missing some of the original comedy quips. the whole soup bit at the beginning is one of my faves. :( i do kinda understand why they cut so many of them from this album as they were very music video specifics, but they are also very much part of the songs and their stories. also just in general the chorus doesnt have the positivity unicorn vibe for me anymore. its like. extremely obvious how much better dan has gotten at singing tho, which sounds so freaking good, but theres just something missing from this that made the original so magical for me. maybe im listening to this through some rose colored... hear pieces idk cause unicorn wizard was my first and is one of my absolute faves, but i just dont really vibe with this the same way. it sounds amazing as a standalone, but as a remake, i just. cant

ROAD TRIP IS ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY. thats all. this song was one of their best, i dont know why its here. it sounds nearly the same anyways, they could have just put new instruments on this instead of also redoing the vocals. im sad

i just want to (dance) is one tho that absolutely deserves to be on this album tho. being one of their first this one goes wayyyyy further than the rest and it still has that original vibe while being accompanied by incredible instrumentals. again, twrp absolutely brings it in this, especially when they kick the faster bits in the song. it just sounds like you’d imagine nsp stuff to sound. its incredible tbh

party of three is the only one of the newer songs i fully accept on this list tbh. mostly cause it has. i described it to myself as a “date night feel”, which is the whole point of this song. and it just fits really well. twrp fucking slaps and the c part before the final chorus? i screamed out loud. that was always my favorite part of this song, and holy sHIT the remake version is giving me even worse goosebumps. god im gay. also they kept at least a few of the quips on this which is. the best

Jiran charged towards the two, throwing heaps of flame left and right. Kyoshi and Rangi slid to the side, narrowly missing the blasts of fire hitting the ground. As more fireballs came their way, Rangi made a circular motion with her hands, creating a shield of fire that captured Jiran’s hits. She held onto it for a moment before throwing the flames back at Jiran. He almost caught the projectile before quickly leaning back, only having part of his armor singed.

Kyoshi tried to blow out the blaze left from Jiran’s previous attacks. But before she could, Jiran kicked his heel and let out a wall of fire that was headed in her direction. She used one of her fans and her airbending to try to redirect it, but it didn’t budge. The impact made her skid across the floor and burnt part of her kimono, revealing some of the chainmail underneath. Kyoshi thought the young commander was all bark and no bite, but she was beginning to see that he had some strength.

Rangi looked back to Kyoshi worried. Her worry quickly turned to determination to get back at Jiran. She quickly moved from side to side, dodging the blaze coming from Jiran’s feet in rapid succession. As she got closer, she turned to the offensive by jumping up and delivering a fiery kick towards the commander. He dodged once again, not letting up as the fight got closer and closer.

Kyoshi watched as the brawl went on. She didn’t know how to intervene since Rangi and Jiran were close enough that if she were to attack, she might injure Rangi by accident. She waited for a moment to break in, but she knew that this fight was personal.

The two were surrounded by fire, creating a ring around them as they continued the duel. They were both covered in sweat and ash. Rangi was still calm and collected while Jiran looked like a pale imitation of the authority that he commanded only moments ago. The fight was like a dance of dragons, with dodging and movements that should not have been possible happening by the second. The evaded each other's attacks and tried to return them at the same time. It was a complete stalemate.

But it was only a matter of time before something broke the streak. Rangi found herself with Jiran’s fist heading straight for her, ready to blast and with no time for her to move out of the way. It was a split-second decision, she had to think quick otherwise she’d be done for. In reality, she knew she would have to take the hit, but she was still able to improvise.

She grabbed his fist in the middle of producing a flame, stopping to fire from hitting her but burning her palm in the process. She grimaced in pain, trying to hold in the blast. Kyoshi froze up in fear. A quick tinge of the panic she felt during the fight at the estate came back. But it only took a second for her to realize what she was doing.

While Jiran had one fist in front of him, he let his other hand stay behind. He left himself completely open. Rangi didn’t hesitate after holding on to the pain of her burnt palm to use her other hand, landing a fire first right into Jiran’s chest. The force of the blow flung him out of the ring and back onto the ground, leaving a massive ashy mark.

Rangi was breathing fast, gripping onto the burns to lessen the pain. Kyoshi let out a sigh of relief, she knew Rangi could protect herself but it still wasn’t easy to see her get hurt. Rangi walked over to Jiran who was slowly trying to get off of the ground. She crossed her arms looking down at him.

“Are you done making a fool of yourself?”

Jiran scowled at first before changing to a smug grin. He didn’t respond.

Out of the corner of Kyoshi’s eye, she noticed Jiran’s foot shift slightly. It didn’t seem like Rangi noticed it. The panic kicked in again.

In a flash, Jiran raised his leg up, aiming a stream of fire towards Rangi’s head. Kyoshi acted fast, stomping her foot to lift up a chunk of stone and launching it towards Jiran. She didn’t consider the angle so she hoped her split-second decision would work. Jiran’s foot came closer and closer. Rangi felt as if she were in slow motion, watching her fate happen right in front of her as the heat came closer to her face.

That is until the flame stopped prematurely. A large stone struck Jiran’s leg so hard it made him whirl around in his stance like a poorly made spinning top. Rangi saw another opportunity was given to her thanks to Kyoshi. As the once-proud commander was twirling in place, Rangi reeled her leg back and kicked a ball of fire that, once again, sent Jiran flying backwards with his face on the ground. It seemed to be his favorite spot that day.

Kyoshi returned to Rangi’s side as the commander slowly got back up. He didn’t have the same fury in his eyes as he saw the two of them still as sturdy as they were at the start of the battle. Rangi’s eyes even held the same level of contempt that they had at the beginning.

“I’m going to ask you again, are you done making a fool of yourself?”

Jiran was able to stand but could feel his honor was crippled. He realized if any of the other commanders heard of this, he would be demoted, or worse. He knew the Avatar would probably talk to Zoryu at some point, so the chance of that happening was likely. He lowered his hands, still clenching a fist even after he knew what the outcome of the fight was.

He returned the contempt. “I’ll leave you two with a warning, I better not see you on these streets again.”

Rangi sneered at the commander who was suddenly trying to act dignified after everything that had happened. “Trust me, you better hope you don’t see me again.”

Anger built up in Jiran’s cheeks, huffing away as he tried to find his scattered troops.

Kyoshi and Rangi both looked at each other, smirking as the commander lamely tried to wake up soldiers who were rendered unconscious. Kyoshi broke the tension of the moment with a joke. “I didn't realize being a big baby was a requirement for a commander's position.”

They both laughed, it was another moment of relief after the continuously building panic they both went through. Kyoshi noticed Rangi staring at her again as her laughter subsided.

“Hey,” Rangi glanced at the somewhat charred kimono. “Are you okay?”

Kyoshi nodded while brushing off some of the ash. “I’m good,” she said with confidence. Her eyes glanced over to Rangi’s hand. “How about you?”

Kyoshi held Rangi’s hand, turning it over to see the burn that was left. It wasn’t a light burn, it was a deep, bright red and almost covered the edges of her fingertips She was studying it with great concern, so much so that it was starting to show. Rangi gave her a reassuring look.

“I’m fine.”

Though it was only partially reassuring, it seemed like she was lost in thought. But Kyoshi didn’t blame her, a lot had happened over the past few minutes.

Rangi motioned her head over to the side. “We should..probably pull that wall down.”

Kyoshi almost forgot about the wall. She walked over to the stone barrier and with a slight movement of her hands slowly brought it down. She saw the awestruck gaze of the protestors and some varied looks from her team, Kirima was smiling with delight at seeing the topknot wearing firebender denounce the authorities while Hei-ran was uncertain how to feel.

Kyoshi called out to the crowd. “Is everyone okay?”

Their faces were still frozen in awe but they all quickly nodded. From the crowd, the man who previously addressed Commander Jiran brought himself to the front to speak with Kyoshi.

“Avatar Kyoshi…...how can we ever repay you.”

This was new for Kyoshi, gaining appreciation for her actions. Back in Ba Sing Se all her actions ever did was spark fear and ridicule but now she was seeing the flipside. She raised a hand, trying not to appear flustered. “There's no need, really.”

“Well then, you have our greatest gratitude and respect.” The man bowed along with the other demonstrators.

Kyoshi didn’t know how to react. Respect was something that she was rarely given and to see a whole group of people express it openly was something that was hard for her to process. It dawned on her how far away her days as a maid in Yokoya were. It felt wrong not to return the gesture, so Kyoshi bowed as well.

“And you all have my respect for standing up to Commander Jiran.”

The leader of the group smiled fondly at the statement while he was still bowed.

Meanwhile, Rangi felt a tingle of guilt grow in the back of her mind. Seeing this group, she noticed some of them had bandages and bruises all over. They were a bitter reminder to the fact that she was still part of the Fire Nation military. It was still hard to come to terms with the brutality that those soldiers were willing to enforce against their own people. These demonstrators were more honorable than an official Fire Nation commander, maybe even more than the Firelord himself. The pain in realizing the hypocrisy in a system she followed for years would only occasionally be blocked out by the physical pain of her burn.

Kirima walked up to Kyoshi and the demonstrators. “It's great that we have your respect and all, but we should probably find a place to stay before more soldiers arrive.”

Jinpa joined in. “It's only a matter of time before Jiran comes back and he might be coming with other commanders.”

Kyoshi realized they hadn’t made any plans for where to stay. They could go back to their campsite, but it was a long journey that wouldn’t be worth the travel. Then the group leader interjected.

“You could all stay at the Ember Lily Inn, that's where we’ve been hiding out for the past few days. There should be space for a few more rooms.”

Kyoshi bowed again. “We would greatly appreciate that, thank you!”

Rangi noticed that Kyoshi was acting more formally here than she did at the Firelord’s gathering. Part of her thought it was due to the fact that she had more experience with Fire Nation customs. But more than that, it was who she was speaking to.

Kirima nudged Kyoshi on the side. “Well if that's where we’re staying we should probably head out, now.”

Kyoshi nodded, still keeping the sense of comradery and authority she was trying to build with the demonstrators. Everyone started to follow the group, but Kyoshi stayed behind for a moment. Rangi was still lost in thought. But she saw Kyoshi waiting for her.

The young Avatar was looking at her with warmth, a kind of warmth she hadn’t seen before. It helped to push the worrying thoughts out of her head and focus on what she had now. She walked with Kyoshi, who tried to hold her hand. Rangi grimaced from the pain of the burn she still felt on her palm. Kyoshi quickly jolted her hand away, remembering her injury. The Avatar’s warmth subsided, as she was worried about everything that happened to the firebender today.

Rangi had worried about Kyoshi before, now it was her turn to worry about Rangi.

Hey, you know that 35 d&d questions ask meme? I answered all of them.

This is a long ass post. Be warned. It took up seven and a half pages in google docs. Original post here.

1. A favorite character you have played.

Would have to be Zize Fortier, dragonborn gunslinger. Their tag on this blog is #zize and you can find their bio and info on my character page. Love that bastard!! He’s sweet and bratty and a total delight to play (we are such an OP party, y’all).

2. Your favorite character that someone else has played.

UM UM gonna talk about a few here. To be fair to people I play a *lot* of games with, I’m only gonna  talk about one PC per person.

- The bastard trio in my Wildemount game– @toomanyorphans ’s Nakoria, @overplannedbutunnamednpc ‘s Zier (also an NPC in the campaign Zize is in), and @glasyasbutch ‘s Nissy. They all really suck so bad but in SUCH funny ways. They’re varying degrees of self centered and awful, but we trust each other in this campaign, and those 3 players are SO funny in their RP.

- (RIP) Avri in my Wildemount game. They and Bly named each other,,,,  they were parent and child…… VERY sweet. huge goliath with tiny bird in backpack.

- @bekahdoesnershit ‘s Raini. Zize’s BFF, and her tag on that blog is rich. She’s SUCH a bitch but we love her.

- @bhissar ‘s Saela. She is a dream character for me to DM for– very little fleshed out backstory with room to explore, with still-concrete events in it. Consistent character choices and personality, to the point I can sometimes predict what she’ll do. Very cool aesthetically. And overall? EXTREMELY sweet. Baby, baby bird.

3. Your favorite side quest.

Either the one going on right now in amnesia, where we have to collect brain matter from big powerful elementals, or the stop we made at a family of vampires in Acarnya (the one I played Osfyr in).

4. Your current campaign.

There are five of those, with two on hold. 

-Wildemount, aka the Frozen Sick module from Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount (we’re almost done with that, my PC is Bly). 

-Amnesia campaign aka high level campaign: we woke up in hell with no memories! PC is Zize. 

-Hoard of the Dragon Queen module, near the beginning of that, PC is Pointy. 

-Horror campaign, only two sessions so far, but we’re trapped in an alternate dimension carrying out tasks for a creepy dude. PC is Vinny. 

-Kithan, where we’re high level monster hunting guild members searching  out ancient artifacts of the gods (campaign based on the Monster Hunter games), PC is Topaz.

-Silas, party is currently trying to help dragons free themselves and stop a… dude? No spoilers! I DM. On hold because I had too many campaigns going at once.

-Silas v2: extremely vaguely based on the plot of season one of the web series Carmilla. A tweaked version of the first arc the Silas party went through. On hold because it was played in person at school.

5. Favorite NPC.

I don’t really have any NPCs in my campaigns that I’m super attached to, except– Nikeo, a goliath rogue PC in Silas 1, had many adopted children. Three of them– kobolds– sometimes stand on each others’ shoulders, put on a long coat, and help out around their parent’s store. They’ve named themselves Koby.

As for favorite NPCs in campaigns I’ve played, I can think of… a lot. The first is Laurel, a blue dragonborn loner type who followed Osfyr and friends in Acarnya. They were kind of broody and dark, but they really drew me in. They were the first NPC we really talked to– they were sitting on top of the post office laughing at the mob scene of people protesting not getting their mail delivered.

I’d also pick Osfyr’s partners in that campaign– Yelkian, a backstory love interest I came up with, a flamboyant soft sorcerer. Jupiter, politician’s niece, who took pity on Osfyr’s attempts to seduce information out of her and let them succeed on both counts (seduction and information). Xerxes, extra AF rogue with a big loving family, who swept in after a fight on the back of an eagle-wildshaped Brysth (npc druid). 

There’s a blue dragon in the HOTDQ campaign that we don’t know much about. I really enjoyed the way @dungeonsanddraconicqueer played him. He’s just a dude! Lex’s warlock made a Deal with him to leave the town alone. We still don’t know the implications of that. It’s fine, guys.

And then, there’s Stewart the Skin Steward, a servant of False Mystra. Fun dude.  Very cavalier– nigh, enthusiastic!– about the fact that his entire city was made of skin. Something of a skin connoisseur, in fact!

6. Favorite death (monster, player character, NPC, etc).

Saela, hands down. She got breathed on by a dragon, yo. We then had to stop playing for 4-5 months because a player lost access to the Internet. I wrote a vision/speech from her warlock patron, the Raven Queen, the night she died, and basically didn’t touch it until I read it out in game. It involved a confession that the Queen was  tired of being a god, and showing Saela all the lives she’d touched. Then we used Matt Mercer’s rez rules for her. She came back– but it was her choice.

7. Your favorite downtime activity.

Fucking tinkering dude!!! I don’t get to do it enough as Zize and that is entirely my fault. @ morgan, eyes emoji

8. Your favorite fight/encounter.

I LOVE creepy shit. There was a train car with people dancing in it, and party members got enchanted to dance along and eat the food,  and the revelers were clearly in pain, and snuffing out a candle caused a reveler to disappear. Creepy shit!

In Kithan, we had to climb a staircase, and we timed it with produce flame which is a 10 minute duration cantrip, and we were climbing for 50 minutes. We started to see things in the edges of our vision. Then someone realized it was an illusion, and it all vanished. It freaked me out so bad.

In amnesia campaign, at level 19, we were traversing a cave, and our shadows started dripping the same black goop we were there to investigate. We killed one and it took down the max hp of the person whose shadow it was, and then they straight up didn’t have a shadow until they long rested. It really freaked us out, realizing the shadows were actually creatures, but they were like CR 1. Really effective use of a low level monster.

9. Your favorite thing about D&D.

The way it has something for everyone… the way it’s brought me so many friends… the way it’s inspired my OC creation like nothing else.

10. Your favorite enemy and the enemy you hate the most.

I’m not sure if this is asking about NPCs I’ve had as enemies, or any monster in D&D canon? The longest campaign I played in didn’t have long term enemies  per se. I’d say I was frustrated with the cultists that ambushed us last session in HOTDQ,  but I didn’t hate them! I just couldn’t seem to hit or dodge them. As for a favorite… probably False Mystra: the demon lord Orcus who’d taken over  the position, and therefore the duties, of Mystra, the god of arcane magic.  We killed it,  but then whoopso!! Our wizard lost her powers.

11. How often do you play and how often would you ideally like to play?

I play an ideal amount, honestly: four times a week, for about 2.5-3 hours a session. HOTDQ Tuesdays, Kithan and horror campaign switching off Wednesdays, Wildemount Thursdays cause we miss CR, Amnesia Sundays.

12. Your in game inside jokes/memes/catchphrases and where they came from.

Amnesia: Yocheved, the party barbarian/full time fish, has a secret third arm and/or a prosthetic ass. Cylthia, the druid, does arson (but actually). Relentless is a Crown paladin, so she puts her fingers in her ears when we do crime/lie. She also has a rod of lordly might that, immediately post amnesia, she made into a 32 foot climbing pole. Yocheved eats pounds and pounds of raw fish for every meal.

Wildemount: just the shenanigans and sabotaging each other that the Bastard Trio get into. Example: Nissy was tasked with buying Zier a cloak for cold weather and purposely got him an  ugly one. Zier then prestidigitated it to be a nicer color.

13. Introduce your current party.

Oh boy, I have 6 of those. Here goes. Keep in mind many of these characters are played and games are DMed by my friends who have OC blogs of their own: Raini and Ayen are bekahdoesnerdshit, Ezra, Nissy, and Roona are glasyasbutch, Horror DM, Lent, Eve, and Nakoria are toomanyorphans, Wildemount DM, Saela, Daecyne, and Cylthia are bhissar, HOTDQ DM is dungeonsanddraconicqueer, and Amnesia DM, Zier, Nyxi, and Sarril are overplannedbutunnamednpc. Not an OC blog, but Yocheved, Avri, Arbor, Thraf, Nikeo, and Whisper are mickgoesabsolutelyhamforbarbie.

Amnesia (Zize): Lent, tiefling paladin, former crownsguard who “fell” (became an oathbreaker), then un-fell when we lost our memories. Cylthia, tiefling/elf druid who can shift between tiefling and elf forms and loves setting things on fire. Yocheved, 14 foot tall nereid (fishfolk) barbarian with a dry sense of humor, is the party parent. And Raini, aasimar wizard, sass machine and Zize’s bff.

HOTDQ. My PC is Pointy. Ezra, quiet human paladin. Theata, moon elf rogue. Freya, sweet (human?) light cleric who sometimes misreads situations. Eve, 13 year old (!!) human warlock who kinda sucks, but like, she’s 13. Nyxi, motherly gnome bard who Is going to adopt Pointy. 

Wildemount (Bly): Alene, human barbarian. Quiet and with somewhat of a parent instinct. Some sort of Mysterious Backstory. Delta, aasimar rogue, similarly shady backstory? Unclear. Sticks with Alene. Nissy, drow rune knight, sucks. Zier, drow sorcerer, also sucks. Nakoria, dragonborn warlock, ALSO sucks. (Those three make up the Bastard Trio.) Avri (F for them), goliath bard and Avri’s guardian, died last session by falling on a floor full of knives. 

Horror campaign (Vinny): Roona, halfling bard, very impulsive, eats exclusively with her spoon that says ASS, and chills in Vinny’s fanny pack. Ayen, elven teenage warlock with a dark backstory. Sarril, Ayen’s not-dad, half elf beast barbarian who got it from his wife. Arbor, dryad  monk, who wears an all white plague doctor outfit at all times.

Silas v1 (DM), Original party before 1 left and 1 died: Hacka (RIP), human luchador-styled drunken monk. Nikeo (left), goliath rogue with so many adopted children. Inferno, fire genasi paladin/phoenix sorcerer with anger and impulse control issues. Saela, babiest aarakocra warlock of the Raven Queen. Hacka’s player now plays Voda, a stoic water genasi tempest cleric who cast Raise Dead successfully on Saela. Nikeo’s player now plays Whisper, a tabaxi astral soul monk.

Kithan (Topaz): Thraf, monsterborn (universe-compliant dragonborn) barbarian. Very social, very outgoing, very stupid, and very traumatized. Fucks majorly. Daecyne, sweet tiefling druid and Topaz’s good friend. Viosa, aasimar homebrew class I forget the name of, uses her small stature and allure to her advantage. Damur, half-orc eldritch knight, the party’s only braincell.

14. Introduce any other parties you have played in or DM-ed.

Acarnya. My PC was Osfyr. Soraphine, traumatized halfling bard. Azalea, human fighter. Durzuell, haughty high elf sorcerer. James, nerdy half elf wizard. Drago, erratic Russian dragonborn monk. Kairon, slightly edgy ranger/paladin (but we love him). 

Nordenheim. My PC was Cap. I will admit: we only played 2 or 3 sessions, so I don’t really remember  most of the other party members except Rory, a fire genasi ranger who almost burned to death.

Silas v2 (hopefully will continue; I DMed): Kysseris IV. Half-elf paladin, uptight. Tower 1-6, warforged wizard who crawled out of the desert and is looking for info on how he was made. Mae “Pock”, gnome rogue, very small and  sweet. Josh, human trickery cleric, kind of an asshole, but in a way that’s funny and hasn’t bled over into IRL annoying.

[school] West Marches campaign (Ner): by the nature of West Marches, there was never a consistent party, but a few stood out to me. Red Foot, a hyperactive kobold sorcerer who’s level 8 against all West Marches odds. Lyra, Great Old One warlock of Tzee’Mhor, an abomination goat that a party I was in accidentally created. Fildo Baggins, divination wizard who can only affect allies whose toenail clippings he has in his vial.

15. Do you have snacks during game times?

Hell yeah babey!!! I mostly play digitally, especially during COVID, and I need something to munch after DMing for a while. Shit’s exhausting.

16. Do you play online or in person? Which do you prefer?

Welp! Online mostly, since everyone I want to play with has the audacity to live far away, and now exclusively online because of COVID.

17. What are some house rules that your group has?

Our Amnesia party is so rich that we just don’t keep track of money. In Kithan, a lot of rules that make characters less powerful are just… abolished (like the bonus action spell rule). (The DM likes super OP characters so she can throw SUPER OP monsters at us.  My character has a necklace that gives 5 additional uses of channel divinity.)

18. Does your party keep any pets?

Nope. No opportunities for them. Zize’s party has a little water snake on the druid’s arm but I doubt that will last very long.

19. Do you or your party have any dice superstitions?

Absolutely. Cursed dice get j a i l.

20. How did you get into D&D? How long have you been playing?

Acarnya got me into d&d, it was my first campaign, and it was happening at the place I lived. I’ve been playing almost 2 years. (Critical Role inspired me to DM)

21. Have you ever regretted something your character has done?

Not sent a fucking letter to say goodbye to their boyfriend before the world-fate-deciding bullshit that was gonna happen and possibly destroy shit. It was fine in the end though!

22. What color was your first dragon?

Red. Man, that guy sucked, he almost killed Osfyr. We were investigating a monastery secretly run by dragons disguised as humans.

23. Do you use premade modules or original campaigns?

Original campaigns. I’ve never run a module before! I’m not opposed, but most of my campaigns came from ideas  that I had. I’ve never been short on ideas for a game.

24. How much planning/preparation do you do for a game?

As a player, I just open my character sheet and get out dice. As a DM, I try and think about what material I want to get through this session, and write some narration and/or stat things out if I feel like it.

For DMs

25. What have your players done that you never could have planned for?

A lot of times, Inferno has rushed into battle from what I’d built as a stealth mission, and gotten her ass and sometimes the party’s asses kicked. I should really have learned by now.

26. What was your favorite scene to write and show your characters?

Definitely Saela’s resurrection ritual and vision.

27. Do you allow homebrew content?

Yes! I’ll check it first,  but I’m all for expanding the boundaries. I homebrew items and monsters all the time, why shouldn’t my payers get to homebrew their shit?

28. How often do you use NPCs in a party?

Too often in my first arc. I had like 7 NPCs running around at all times (they were Carmilla characters). Super not recommended. I have 0 right now.

29. Do you prefer RP heavy sessions or combat sessions?

I’m still finding my groove with RP as a DM. I like encouraging my players to RP amongst themselves. I consider myself fairly good at combat on both sides of the equation, DM and player, so that’s always fun to me, especially when my players enjoy it too.

30. Are your players diplomatic or murder hobos?

I have one actively reforming murder hobo player, the rest are diplomatic. (The character, Inferno, is having a great growth arc. I’m super proud.)

31. What is your favorite class? Favorite race?

I fucking love genasi as a concept. Favorite class would have to be rogue or cleric, but gunslinger’s up there too.

32. What role do you like to play the most? (Tank/healer/etc?)

I  honestly don't have the patience to not play DPS. I love doing lots of damage. Healing is satisfying, support is satisfying, but there’s a reason I picked rogue twice and tempest cleric over other domains.

33. How do you write your backstory, or do you even write a backstory?

Sometimes the backstory is part of the character concept– especially for Pointy, because I had the name first, then went hmm why would she have this name. Almost always, though, more backstory gets written during the campaign when I have an idea. Sometimes a character will act in a way I don’t expect, and it’s fun thinking of a justification to fill backstory gaps.

34. Do you tend to pick weapons/spells for being useful or for flavor?

Mostly  usefulness honestly. I’ll make choices among several for flavor, but I’m a big proponent of using mechanics to build character. What I mean is, think about Magnus in TAZ Balance– his protection fighting style contributed a lot to the way Travis played him as a protective person. I love that shit.

35. How much roleplay do you like to do?

I like to do a lot, but unfortunately my  energy is pretty down lately so I haven’t been doing as much.
