Beyond the Sea

Eren sets foot on the beautiful shores along the bright blue sea for the first time, however, it is not actually his first time seeing this sight. He ponders about the future- he wonders if it is truly be inevitable.

A familiar voice called out to him, yelling in excitement. "Look, Eren!..."

Eren had internally brought back his consciousness to reality, back to his surroundings.

Ah... right...

They were supposed to rejoice at this moment, but he was deep in thought, staring out into the sea.

Everyone Eren's friends had just seen the sea for the first time. The overwhelmingly large body of water stretching farther than the horizon before them was quite a sight to see... so vast, so infinite, so free- different from the giant walls that had caged them before.

It's not like they never felt a little bit of peace within that walled city, it's just that there was always the constant fear of the outside... the possibility of titans one day collapsing their walls of safety.

But here, in the peaceful shores of the sea, for once, they were felt free.

Except for one-

Not Eren.

Ever since the awarding ceremony from Historia, everything changed for him that day.

Millennium of years worth of knowledge, history, and emotion of the past and the future- all of it were sent to him in a matter of just a second.

The past of predecessors, the origin of the titans, every death, every brutal battle, his father's memories, the tragic things that will happen, and the tragic things he will do- he knows it all.

He was only a child. How was he supposed to process such a large burden and responsibility? No one could've answered.

His mind is now a slave: a slave to freedom, the freedom he so much sought for. But now- it is not about him anymore, it is not about reaching for his freedom, it is not about battling any titan nor enemy... it had now turned into leading the fate of the people he cared most about...

Even if that meant making the world his enemy.

Even if that made him the enemy.

"Eren look!" Armin called out once more, holding his newly found seashell to show to Eren "On the other side of the wall... Th-"

Eren interrupted.

"There's a sea..." He started, his eyes fixated on the far edge of the sea. Armin fell silent, watching him.

"On the other side of the sea is freedom..."

'Freedom is beyond these walls!'

"That's what I always believed."

There is no real freedom, Eren.

"I was wrong. On the other side of the sea....are enemies." Eren turned to them with eyes full of mixed emotions: grief, pain, confusion, guilt, fear, ambition....

'are the enemies beyond the sea?'

'are there even any enemies at all?'

Armin and Mikasa look at him conerned, unable to comprehend Eren's deep thoughts, unaware of the tragic events that are to be experienced by their squad- Events that only Eren knew.

He turned his eyes once again to the familiar scenery of the sea, to the sea he had been seeing in his memories. "If we kill all our enemies there... will we finally have freedom?" His thoughts fall back to the reality of what is to come, what the future holds.

There is no stopping the future when the future is already happening in his mind, the death of four fifths of humanity and the deaths of many of his fellow comrades.

Armin, noticing Eren's sorrowful tone, lowered his hands that held the seashell.

Armin had come to a realization: the realization that Eren and he had never shared the exact same dream. Yes, both of them fought for the same goal: for freedom, however, the freedom that Eren sought for was different from his.

Armin's freedom was discovery, peace, exploration... while Eren's meaning of freedom was ridding the world from oppression, from their enemies, in order to achieve that peace.

He was about to drop the seashell he held in his hands...

however...

...he held

it...back-

He held it back up.

Armin knew he didn't fully understand what exactly had been on Eren's mind. He knew that Eren always looked at everything to a much larger scale ever since they were young. He knew Eren sought for something elese- different from what Armin had imagined.

Nonetheless, Eren is still his best friend, and he could only try to be understanding, especially since there had been something different about Eren recently...

Ever since things died down after the awarding, Eren never spoke about anything that had been bothering him... but it was obvious that Eren's behavior had changed, though when brought up, Eren rejects it.

Armin understood it still must've been a hard time for him to be bottling up those deep feelings, so he wanted to help in his own way, even if Eren couldn't express what exactly he was feeling, even after he realized that their ideals of freedom were not exactly parallel with each other.

"... Eren...." Armin spoke softly, gently gripping the shell close to his chest and walked to Eren's side.

"Look..." quietly and gently, Armin spoke, bringing forth the shell towards Eren's view.

Eren's gaze hovers towards the shell.

Confused, Eren was.

This was not a part of his memories.

"... it's pretty... right, Eren?" His tone gentle and kind while his eyes looked at his dearest friend. "...There's a few of these it in front of you too..." Armin gestured toward the ground in front of Eren.

'Huh? I haven't seen this memory yet... have I...?'

'You were supposed to drop the shell and go under the tree with Mikasa... why are... you...'

"You were too busy looking far ahead that you didn't notice it." Armin was, for the most part, talking about the shell, in hopes to lighten Eren's spirit.

But Armins words were somewhat interpreted differently for Eren.

He looked at Armin, then looked at Mikasa, who was watching the both of them from a few feet away.

Eren's body turned to his friends, Jean, Connie and... Sasha, who were running around and splashing each other with the seawater, their eyes the happiest they've looked since their cadet days.

Eren's gaze follows to where Hange stood, who was picking up everything and anything their hands could see, bewilderment and amazement shone in their eyes. (Levi was scolding Hange in the back)

'Huh...?'

Eren saw the scene around him... strange, it felt. Just a moment ago, he had been too fixated on his thoughts of the future of humanity and his friends... but right now...

'Why does it feel... peaceful...?'

Doubtful, Eren thought. Impossible, even.

His gaze falls towards the ground beneath him, where he found a few more seashells that sat next to him, lightly touching his feet as the waves gently swayed them back and forth. He picked one up. Colorful, pretty it was. His mind began to fog.

If only Eren had taken a moment to take a step back from everything- to view the world from beyond what he trapped himself in.

'Is this really peace?' Is it possible to find another form of peace- Peace without the need to pursue the Rumbling?

Perhaps so, because peace is happening at this very moment, even if beyond this moment, there is none.

His mind shifts again, conflicted.

The future he sees in his memory is unavoidable, death awaits billions... that cannot be changed.

But... the moment on the beach right now is... different from his memories... so... would it really be possible to alter the inevitable?

Maybe...

If only there were another plan.... Could Eren achieve everything he desired without murdering countless lives and spare the suffering of his friends? Would there have been a way to convince the world to never even dare spit in their direction? Or even having them consider a temporary truce? A far stretch, but...

'...they're possible' Eren thought.

The circumstance of their fates is frustrating but it cannot be helped. Now, Eren could only think of ways to solve his way around it, as long as it did not compromise his goal of achievhing peace for his friends family.

If the world was bound to an endless war anyway, then maybe Eren doesn't need to go to such lengths to protect them.

Maybe that could've just been someone elses' problem, someone who will only be born years after their death.

Call it selfish, but Eren was never not selfish to begin with.

Perhaps if he gave himself more thought... there should be something else he could think of, something he could've changed.

If only Eren looked at what was already in front of him instead of the far end of the sea....

If only Eren had seen the seashell that day.

But the idea of him walking around with one of them as his lock screen where literally any and everyone could see was kind of embarrassing. “That’s like me making my lock screen a picture of you during self-care night,” you quickly tacked on.

Eren sat up with an offended huff, “You’ve done that! It’s literally your lock screen right now!”

Without a second thought, you unlocked your phone and practically shoved your phone in his face. “It’s my home screen- there’s a difference.”

Eren stared at the picture of himself with a facemask and a headband with cat-ears on. “I, well-.” He opened his mouth and closed it again in defeat. “Here,” he finally continued his thought after a moment. With one swift motion, he yanked the bonnet off your head and plopped it onto his own like a hat. He didn’t even bother to tuck in his ponytail before he snatched your phone.

“Excuse me?!”

“Damn, I look good in this,” Eren cooed to himself as he looked at his reflection in your camera, tilting his head side to side for better angles. “I look cuter than you in this.” He glanced at you in the corner of his eye, gauging your reaction.

“Boy, give me my stuff back.” You held your hand out expectantly, only for him to high-five you.

“Give me a sec, geez. I’m making you a new lock screen.” Your playfully annoyed stare slowly transformed into a more loving one as he took several selfies before taking time to decide the best one. “There.” With a soft kiss on your lips, he showed you his work proudly, handing you back your phone. “This thing,” he pointed to his head with a wide smile, “this is mine now, though.”

“You have one in your nightstand!”

“Yeah, but this one is cuter.”

“They’re the same color, Eren!”

Armin

He doesn’t quite get it at first, but he’s supportive nonetheless.

“So, the hat protects your hair..?” Armin’s dazzling blue eyes focused on the bonnet on your head, studying the silky material. His eyebrows knitted together in concentration as he reached a hand up to play with the fabric. Your bubbly laughter filled his ears, bringing him back to reality. “S-sorry! I don’t mean to be rude! I just-.”

“It’s fine, baby.” You brushed aside the hair resting on his forehead before kissing his forehead. “You’re always so cute when you get super curious.”

“And you’re cute in your little night hat,” Armin murmured with a sweet, gentle smile. He slung an arm over your waist, pulling you flush against him before planting a soft kiss on your lips. “So, do they all have to be silky like this one? Or does it just have to cover all of your hair?”

“Silk or satin, yeah-” you toyed with the baggy sleeves of his sweatshirt, “Either one helps keep hair healthy.”

“Oh, so what about silky sheets and pillowcases?”

“I mean, they’d work.” You could see the gears turning in Armin’s eyes, almost like he was taking notes in his head. “But bonnets are better cause it’s less friction. It’s like, uh,” you paused as you thought of a simple analogy to help him understand more. “Oh okay, so, it’s kinda like cuddling, y’know. Like there’s only so much you can move cause someone’s holding you.”

“So the bonnet makes less friction cause it holds all your hair?” A gasp fell from his lips as his eyes went almost impossibly wide with realization. “I get it now! The material itself helps keep your hair moisturized and less frizzy.” His fingers grazed the soft material as he continued to explain. “But because the bonnet is like a cap, it does that with less friction, so less split ends. Right? Wait, why are you looking at me like that?”

“N-nothing-” you shook your head with an admiring smile on your face, “-it’s nothing. But yeah, that’s exactly it.”

“So, if I got you- I mean, got us silk sheets?”

“You really don’t have to-.”

“I know,” Armin leaned forward to kiss your forehead. “But I want to. Oh! And I could even try making you some bonnets so you’ll have some to match anything.”

You could feel your cheeks growing warm from his seriousness, a smile now permanently on your lips. “The only thing I’m worried about matching is my adorable boyfriend.” You rested your forehead against his, rubbing your nose against his for a quick Eskimo kiss.

“I’m sure I can make that happen for my angel.”
