Spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man 26
I’d clip, but I literally don’t give a shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is only one thing that can be said.
WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?!
WHHHHAATT?!
3 questions.
1: WHAT?!
2: WHAT THE FUCK?!
3: WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
I decided to log off a bit to collect my thoughts....and with that I can confidently still say "What the actual fuck?"
Let's leave aside the problematic shit for a minute and talk about the other stuff.
You kill off a character who was the main character of her own book in a completely different book. One that she was barely in. One where the events of the book have nothing to really do with her.
It's one thing for Spider-Man writers to lazily just default to 'story where Peter gets sad' or refuse to have his most iconic love interest get back with him.
It's a whole other thing to screw up an actually good character for their stupid melodrama.
"Oh but it's comics. She'll be back in a bit"
Ya don't do the sappy death shit when you're aware that another writer is going to undo it.
Man, I can't imagine that these guys even bothered asking G. Willow Wilson, Sana Amanat, Adrian Alphona, or Jamie Mckelvie for permission nor can I imagine Marvel even telling any of them about this.
Ya think about the DC Sandman stuff and how in Dark Knights Metal Scott Snyder asked Neil Gaiman for permission to have Dream show up just to provide exposition.
Can't imagine why I'm thinking about that right now.
See I actually haven't been reading the Zeb Wells Spider-Man stuff, only really memeing on stupid pages uploaded online.
The only reason I'm assuming that Kamala was chosen to be killed off was because they thought the outrage would be funny. Given the creative's behavior.
Alrighty. Time to just talk about the real shit.
You took the biggest example of a Muslim Superhero, a hero that gave representation to a group that still suffers so much discrimination to this day, and you killed her off.
A character that truly meant so much to so many people and they kill her in this piece of shit.
I want to say that this was just pure ignorance, but given the behavior exhibited by the creators, I'm not giving them that benefit.
They probably want to laugh at the people upset about this, not knowing that killing Ms Marvel, I'd say a group is right to be upset.
Although I will say this. Please, for the love of God, do  not harass, send death threats, or threats of physical violence to anyone over this.
This is a god forsaken piece of shit and we should treat it as such, but don't be a piece of shit yourself. That being said, next point
TIME FOR EVERY OLD MALE COMIC WRITER'S FAVORITE GAME SHOW!
WOMEN IN REFRIGERATORS!!!!! FILMED IN FRONT OF A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE!
ALL FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A NEW CONVERTIBLE, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WRITE A SEQUENCE OF A FEMALE CHARACTER BEING KILLED FOR NO NARRATIVE REASON OTHER THAN TO INJECT UNNEEDED PATHOS IN A DUDE'S STORY!
ZEB WELLS IS SCORING HIGH WITH THE DEATH OF BELOVED SUPER HEROINE KAMALA! WHO WE DON'T SEE ANY OF HER FRIENDS OR SUPPORTING CAST AROUND FOR HER DEATH!
INSTEAD WE SEE A DUDE SHE DIDN'T EVEN REALLY KNOW CRADLING HER BODY SADLY! THAT'S SOME GOOD MAN PAIN POINT'S!
UNFORTUNATELY, WELLS WON'T BE TAKING HOME THE WHEELS!
BECAUSE WRITERS LIKE ALAN MOORE KNEW BETTER THAN TO GIVE HIS FRIDGE TARGET THE SWEET RELEASE OF DEATH!
Seriously though, they unironically pulled the Women in Refrigerators shit and it's infuriating as hell.
But yeah, I'm sure the next big event comic that will change everything forever will bring her back, if we even have to wait that long.
Screw this shitty ass run for pulling this shit.

an independent, selective and low activity multimuse hexed by evie. this blog may hold triggering content but will be tagged. Minors, racists, homophobes and personals dni.
temp rules and muses under the cut:
001. Hiya, my name is Evie, I’m 27 and live in the EST timezone. I use she/her pronouns. If we’re mutuals feel free to add me on discord at numb little bug#0055. Independent, private, and mutually exclusive Multimuse. I am in no way affiliated with any actress/actor or any media represented on this page. I do own all the headcanons / divergences on this page however.
002.  I will tag triggers as trigger tw, if I post something that is triggering to you and it is not tagged, please message me nicely and ask for it to be tagged. Nsfw / graphic content can ( and most likely will ) be present on this blog. Violence, explicit language, blood and sexual themes. everything will be tagged accordingly.
003.  This blog is oc friendly, but please do not just assume my muse knows yours unless it would make sense for them to do so or it has been plotted beforehand.. All I ask is that you have a bio/bullet points up so I can get a feel for your muse and decide if we’d mesh together or not.
004.  The only issue I have is with sup/sub, as it hurts my eyes straining to read such small text. Aesthetic does not matter to me, if I can see us roleplaying I don’t mind if you don’t format at all. Length of replies don’t matter as long as you give me something to work with but please do not give me a one liner if I write one or two paragraphs. Please for the love of god cut your posts as well.
005.  I prefer my writing partners to be at least 18, but I prefer 21+! I will not follow blogs that are under 18. I am a slow replier, I try to work with a queue to keep things going while I can’t seem to find the time to write. Please do not rush me for replies.
006.  My ask is open to mutuals only. I prefer memes to starter calls, so more likely than not the easiest way to roleplay with me is send a meme and we can go from there. So if you're thinking of sending the meme, do it.when it comes to ship-related memes, and you’re worried I'll be upset if you send it because we’ve never interacted ( or never discussed a ship ), please send it! I don't see this as forced shipping. I see it as an opportunity to test a dynamic. the only way to know if there’s chemistry is to take it for a spin.
007. credits go here.
008. I do not follow first! Few exceptions will be made but for the most part I want to write with those who follow me! So don’t be afraid to yell at me and tell me you wanna plot or write once we’re mutuals!
MUSES:

[Image ID: Two images.
First Image: a series of tags reading #new gods #new genesis #forager #the forever people #op please make more posts going in detail I’d love to read them
Second Image: The "I've been dying to talk about the mail" meme from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Charlie is pushing his hair back and gesturing feverishly in front of a wall covered in papers and red string. Text on the meme reads: "Let’s talk about Forager. Can we talk about Forager? I've been dying to talk about Forager." End ID]
The first thing you need to know about Forager is that Prime One pins all of the Bugs' hopes and dreams on him because he is also an eternal.
(Since DC wavers back and forth on the celestials vs eternals thing, but all of the comics panels I’ve snagged use “eternals,” I’ll roll with “eternals” here).
Though Forager is culturally a Bug, it's clear that the colony adopted him. How or why is never discussed before the original run of New Gods gets canceled. But Forager doesn't resemble other Bugs when he takes his mask off – something he wears in order to fit in with his community more.
Example A:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: panels from New Gods Volume One, Issue Nine.
Prime One addresses Forager. “There! We are alone! It is here where you can remove that which hides your true self!”
As he removes his helmet, Forager replies, “Why am I not like the others, Prime One?”
We get look at Forager’s face. He appears humanoid, like a human or an eternal, with black hair. Prime One replies “Because you ask questions, Forager! And what we see as “living” you see as courage, loyalty, fondness- brotherhood!”
Holding his helmet, Forager says “Like the noise- these feelings rise inside me! And I must give names to these feelings!” End ID]
Example B:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two more panels from New Gods, Volume One Issue Nine.
Forager calls down to Prime One. “But how can I hope to talk to this Eternal!? I’m a Bug! He would stamp me to death without mercy!”
Prime One replies “He will not! Your life is a lie! You’re not one of us! You’re one of his kind!”
Forager, stunned, replies “No! I don’t believe it! I’m a Bug! If you are a Bug- then I am a Bug!” End ID]
It's also clear that while Forager loves his colony, his mind processes differently. He needs time apart from the hive to clear his head. He's also willing to interfere in Prime One's ritual execution (a sacred tradition) and bear exile from his colony to save them all.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Another panel from New Gods Volume One, Issue Nine.
Forager crouches on the outskirts of the colony, eating a piece of bread. Narration text reads “But Forager enjoys a strange and special privilege! He eats alone! He has moments apart from the others! This, among other things, is never questioned-
Forager thinks to himself “This food is good! It was made by the Eternals! That is why I hunt out their “places” - perilous as that may be!”
End ID]
Okay, but save them from what, exactly?
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Prime 1 grasps Forager’s shoulders and says “Mantis seeks to draw us into a war between eternals! We will be used as weapons! --Not equals! Do you see the importance of that?”
A despairing Forager replies, “Yes! No matter which of the eternals win--they shall still regard us as--Bugs!” End ID].
So the answer is not just Apokolips. It's New Genesis, too. Prior to this point, New Genesis has canonically been massacring the Bugs en masse through chemical warfare for raiding their larders. The narrative makes it clear that the Bugs' bodies disappear post their gassing, but it's less a hint that they're alive and more a way to foreshadow that the Bugs handle their dead / dying in a different way than the eternals. What the disappearance of the Bugs' bodies means in the context of how New Genesis sees them is an entirely different topic.
Tumblr media
[Image ID:
One page from New Gods Volume One, Issue Nine.
Narration text reads “A breach is made! Forager and his fellow Bugs swarm into the storehouses and seize the food!”
Forager passes bundles of food to other bugs, as several of them flee carrying food. “Hurry!” he says, “Pass these packs down! Then take one yourself- and run!”
Narration text reads: They strike and run! Experience has taught the Bugs that death soon follows in the wake of such forays!
Carrying a bundle, Forager leads a squad of Bugs, saying “Run! Return to the mound! Remember- everyone must try to make it back to the colony!”
A Bug off panel screams “It comes! The sky death comes!”
Narration text reads “And, in pursuit of the Bugs, High-Father’s deadly monitors close in!”
Monitors, humanoid sentinels carrying machines between them, fly low along the skyline, releasing gas as they fly. “Release the spray! Halt the pests!” one says.
Another says “Those Bugs grow ever bolder! They should be studied more closely!” End ID.]
Tumblr media
[Image ID: One page from New Gods Volume One, Issue Nine.
The gas covers the escaping Bugs. Many of them are already dead. Narration text reads “When the vapors descend, the fleeing legions stiffen in their tracks and drop motionless- to later vanish from the landscape.” One Bug screams “I- I can’t move! Can’t-” as he calls.
“Of course,” the narration continues, there are always those who escape- and Forager is always among them!” Forager shouts “take to the water- swim!” as he dives below the surface of the river. He swims underwater and narration text reads “Forager is hardy and clever! He swims beneath the water, where the death vapors cannot reach him!”
Forager rests, half hidden in a log as it rains around him. Narration continues “Later, he emerges and rests- but the terror never leaves him!”
Forager and the survivors approach the mound with their packs of food as narration concludes “Along with other stragglers, Forager returns to the Mound- the colony will eat! Then it will raid again!” End ID]
Yikes. (I’m sure Jack Kirby, given his horrific experiences in WWII, would know something about living like this. “The terror never leaves him” indeed).
But Prime One is clear with Forager: New Genesis views them as inferior. The eternals, commanded by noble, reserved, and traumatized High-father, are already exterminating the Bugs and will continue to do so if the Bugs side with Apokolips during the war. Prime One knows that siding with Darkseid's fascist army is a mistake, and that Darkseid and his ilk also intend to use the Bugs as cannon fodder, but it isn't as if the Bugs can align themselves with New Genesis and breathe in relief. If they pledge fealty to the eternals without making it clear they're not “just bugs,” New Genesis will also use them as cannon fodder.
Which is why Forager matters. In the eternals' eyes, when Forager unmasks, he's one of them. They feel compassion for him. They listen to him. They can conceptualize him feeling pain and having opinions. It does not matter that Forager is a Bug whether he's unmasked or not. When the mask is off, they view him as an equal. As not a Bug. Prime One is an eloquent, wise elder with nuanced ideas on the war and their genocidal treatment, but he's an insectoid. So is the intelligent and immensely fed-up queen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: A set of panels from New Gods Volume One, Issue Nine.
With his helmet off, Forager addresses Prime One. “What I see, I must learn about! I must know what it is! How it comes to be!”
Prime One replies “Good, Forager! Your thoughts leap beyond the colony! It is said that the Eternals think like that!”
“Can it be possible, Sire?” Forager asks, “Why if we could learn to understand each other-”
“-They might not kill us, Forager! We could communicate- cooperate!”
“Think of it, Sire!” Forager cries, “W-we could roam free in their giant domain! ...Without peril! And all the things of mystery I’ve seen! I-I could-”
“First, Forager,” Prime One says, “We must overcome their contempt and our own fears!” End ID]
Would the residents of New Genesis listen to their pleas for recognition and empathy? Probably not. The chances of them listening to a regular, more insectoid, less articulate member of the colony's pleas for mercy – which the practical Bugs do not make, since they see the eternals as the homicidal enemies they must fight to retrieve food for their colony – are zilch. This the entire reason Forager’s queen considers siding with Darkseid. She wants to end this nightmare and get even. The idea of freedom from this oppression, of revenge and subjugating their immediate subjugators, blinds her to the fact that another eternal is just trying to manipulate her via words in another Bug’s mouth.
Bug-eternal Forager knows it's up to him to make the case for why his whole community should be allowed compassion, communication, and the right to live, because even the best of New Genesis won't hear it from anyone but him. The Bugs are quick to use violence to defend themselves, but they aren’t compared to fierce, protective Orion for it. They’re just seen as unreasonable animals. Hence the “study them more” and “pest” remarks made on ones of the pages above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: A set of panels from New Gods Volume One, Issue Ten.
Orion and Lightray address Forager. “You called me by name!” Orion says.
“You! A lowly New Genesis Bug!” Lightray adds.
“Yes!” Forager replies. “I dare call you Eternals by name! I am one of you!”
Forager removes his helmet. Lightray says “Orion! He speaks the truth!” as Forager continues, “There’s no time to tell my story! I am Forager- here to tell you that Mantis is on his way here!”
“Mantis?” Orion replies.
“It’s what we’ve feared, Orion!” Lightray says, “Mantis has amassed an army in the Bug colonies!”
“What is there to say but, to battle?” Orion asks.
“They’ll come in endless array! That’s the enemy we must face!” Lightray replies.
“Forager joins you willingly!” Forager says, putting his helmet back on. End ID]
(Also, peep Lightray, one of the kindest and brightest of the eternals, who Orion considers the kind of person they’re fighting the war for, also calling Forager “a lowly Bug.” White modern writers love to pretend that just Orion is prejudiced against the Bugs or that the entirety of New Genesis would all be spouting prejudiced rhetoric at every outsider all the time when the reality is much more uncomfortable).
(White modern writers also seem to forget that High-father has been permitting the gassing of the Bugs and try to frame him as an unprejudiced leader who calls out Orion’s isolated bigotry. It’s a good thing the leader who’s killin’ the Bugs by the hundreds through biowarfare won’t call them slurs, right? Diversity win!)
The thing about Forager’s predicament that destroys the concept of the eternals being bigoted towards everyone besides them - something that puts a neat, comfortable bow on prejudice - is that most earthlings look like the eternals. They look human. The eternals have no reason to be prejudiced towards them based on appearance alone. It’s clear they’re fond of and patient with mortals. Residents of New Genesis will also clearly come to bat for other sapient + sentient beings, even if they don’t look attractive, or approachable. This moment from when Superman visits New Genesis makes that clear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Panels from Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen Volume One, Issue 147.
Superman addresses a being that looks like it’s made of stone, craggy and an ugly grey color. “With a face like that,” he says, “You could only have slipped into town from Apokalips!”
Then, an older-looking New God chastises Superman. “Oh-oh!” Superman thinks, “I’ve got a strange notion that I’ve done it again!” Out loud, Superman says “A protonoid, sir?”
The New God replies “Don’t feign ignorance to an elder, you dolt! Just because Protonoids aren’t things of beauty is poor reason to persecute them!” The Protonoid is still struggling to its knees.
Superman says, “I only acted in self-defense! I thought he-” End ID]
But nor is anti-Bug prejudice isolated to a few select members of New Genesis. It’s important that Lightray, of all people, made a discriminatory comment. This is a near ubiquitous prejudice. Even if many eternals aren’t dropping the phrase “lowly bug” on the daily, they’re sure as hell not objecting to their othering and literal mass murder. But that’s the point! Because the eternals have a long, tumultuous history with the Bugs and because they’ve othered their bodies and their thought processes, they can justify their atrocities.
There’s no personal hatred here. Just years and years of dehumanization destroying how a dominate group perceives their neighbors and poisoning them with contempt. They can look at oppressed beings all over the universe and offer their help while looking at their neighbors and thinking, not you. Never you. Look at what you’ve done to us, pests. You’re different.
At least until someone like Forager, who they’re forced to parse as one of themselves, says something. Which is maybe the uncomfortable truth white writers can’t articulate: sometimes, bigoted people shine with real love and compassion towards others besides those their society brutally dismantles. Sometimes, it’s easy to pretend they’re not committing atrocities, because they were so good to you.
Because realizing a “good” group of people commits war crimes while suffering from their own scars isn’t easy. Nor is comprehending the often depersonalized nature of prejudice when it hits a societal scale. Doing others kindnesses won’t erase one’s prejudice, complicity, and the fact they are still accountable for their violent bigotry towards another group.
But maybe acknowledging that kind of systemic prejudice would hit too close to home.
END NOTE: There's possibly a discussion to be had in here about passing, about how you could read Forager's position in the colony as the bridge with New Genesis as being parallel to white-passing or lightskinned POC trying to communicate with white communities since their darker skinned family members won't be listened to or viewed as unreasonable/unable to communicate, but then you get in the weeds when it comes to the canonical species differences between the Bugs and the eternals. The “passing” reading can't be shoveled out of a can and consumed without critical adjustment because it becomes racist quickly.
But I think it's worth interrogating what about Forager lets him slip between two worlds in his attempt to plead his community's case to people who think he's subhuman until he unmasks. Neurodivergent writers, Indigenous writers, and/or writers of color might frame Forager's experience differently, were they given the opportunity to write him.

Nightwing 83 Review
guess who isn't weeks late this time. my opinion of the series is going up a little bit. it's still not great, but i'm not actively put off by it anymore the way i was after 81. not going to tag as spoilers, but be warned that they are under the cut
Tumblr media
i’m sure you all are well aware of this but now, but dear god i love bruno redondo’s art. like, an unhealthy amount. the pink and blue is getting to be a theme with either him or just this run, but i am definitely enjoying it. the movement in this cover is clearly obvious, but well done. you recoznize right off the bat that the cover was drawn to drag your eyes down the page until you get to the bottom, but you enjoy the whole ride there.
also, redondo’s way of drawing a character in stages of action so we can see just how much they’re doing in a split second of movement is quickly becoming something i like to see drawn with dick, and any other character that has that sort of ease of movement and body sense, like cass or sin or maybe a super.
and he’s in action the entire time! there’s shot drawn just to show off a shirtless comic book character, the way nightwing is so often subjected to. he’s shirtless because he’s changing his clothes, and that’s all we see, no more and no less. very practical, very well done. i like it.
Tumblr media
he looks so cute right here oh my god. the little squint, the hair curls. it’s adorable.
but also like. unless melinda has specifically outfitted the door spyhole so that the person on the other side can’t see dick looking through it (and in all honesty she might have) then everyone on the other side can see dick looking through that door.
Tumblr media
bringing your attention back to the “i can’t see melinda’s fbi file oh no!! it’s redacted!! whatever can we do!!” stupidity. redacted files are child’s play for oracle, and definitely doable for both dick and bruce. so that’s bullshit.
now, melinda apparently grew up with the maroni family, then took down part of the family from the inside. the maroni family is a large and notable presence in gotham, one that bruce pays a respectable amount of attention to. he definitely would have grown suspicious when two members of the maroni family were taken down, and with some investigation, he would have discovered melinda’s plan. and it should go without saying that the majority of things you see batman doing? dick can do it too.
it’s not so much that i don’t like how clever the villains/antiheroes are getting. i don’t like how dc heroes are increasingly written as less intelligent. they seem to be relying on pure fighting skills or luck, which may be the case for a couple heroes, but has never been the case for most of dc’s big name heroes, the bat family included. it’s irritating to me to see this sort of stuff pop up as a major plot point when i know that, if dick or bruce had been written with the amount of skill and power that they canonically possess, this entire mess would have been sorted out years ago.
unrelated but dick and melinda have the same hair
Tumblr media
this may just be me, but i was always under the impression that dick doesn’t really have a “double life???”
yes, he’s talented enough to create enough differences between robin/nightwing and dick grayson’s mannerisms, way of movement, voices, and speech patterns so that it’s very difficult to put the two together.
but nightwing has never been separate from dick grayson, not the way bruce and batman is. he’s always leaned more towards clark in that aspect: his hero persona is an exaggerated, stately, larger-than-life version of who he really is. there’s no second persona, no real “dick grayson identity” and “nightwing identity.” they’re the same person with the same goals, ideas, and skills. one just pretends to abide by the law, and one gives up pretense of that.
Tumblr media
oh good thank god. if he’d trusted her right off the bat (hehe. bat.) i would have slapped him upside the head. at least he’s still got instincts.
Tumblr media
gosh the colouring on this is cool. the red has enough purple and pink tones to it that it doesn’t abruptly ruin the tone of the artwork. but it’s definitely glaring enough to take the reader outside of this personal moment they had slipped into between dick and melinda, to put them back in the present where they’re reminded that oh yea there are people hunting dick down.
the next panel keeps this up too, in a less severe way. melinda’s bodyguard shows up (i forgot her name sorry :[ ) and subtly places us in the middle of an action scene rather than a private, personal scene.
Tumblr media
laughing so fucking hard have our little vigilantes grown so accustomed to breaking into places that it doesn’t even register as a crime anymore??? tim coming in through the fire escape to pick bernard up for their date and being very much confused as to why bernard is freaking out.
Tumblr media
i really like melinda’s shirt and now despite all the work i have to do and the fucking conference i have to host on monday i want to spend hours scrolling through clothing shops online trying to find this shirt. the mock neck/neckline is so cool i want it
Tumblr media
so roland just assumes that a very dangerous vigilante who is highly talented in combat and a very dangerous bodyguard who is also highly talented in combat had a fight that ended with this very dangerous bodyguard being tied up and she looks completely fine? roland just assumes that her having no visible wounds or bruises means that they got into a fight and she lost that easily? uh. aight then
Tumblr media
dick what are you doing. legitimately what the fuck are you doing. why are you posing oh my god. you are injured and tired and in absolutely no position to go hand to hand with one of main enemies. jesus christ run away or head to lower ground or something. don’t just stand around letting the floodlights show exactly where you are.
i don’t understand what he’s trying to do here??? blockbuster fully bought the story that dick fought them both, won, tried to get info out of them and failed, then hightailed it out of there. he didn’t have to draw roland out for a fight.
but it does look cool. the way the light just highlights his silhouette and the blue parts of his costume does look badass. he does get style points in my book for this.
Tumblr media
w h a t  d i d  i  f u c k i n g  t e l l  y o u ,  d i c k ?
Tumblr media
very classic superhero line and it does sound like something dick would say in a fit of righteous rage but also it makes me laugh so hard because all vigilantes think they’re so powerful that the law doesn’t apply to them. dick vigilantism is illegal. you’re acting above the law and pretending it doesn’t apply to you. hypocritical much?
it happens so often in superhero movies, tv shows, comics, whatever and it makes me giggle every damn time.
Tumblr media
pretty decent comeback but before i start seeing people writing blockbuster as a thug i’m going to remind you that he made a deal with a demon for genius level intellect. if this turns into another bane situation i’m going to be a little miffed. he’s a smart man, which makes him a dangerous and infinitely more interesting enemy for nightwing.
Tumblr media
this is so horribly in character i want to scream. (or. at least. it lines up with one of the versions of nightwing i have in my head.) he’s running right towards the bullets, miraculously doesn’t get shot, while making a sort-of pun. i hate this so much. i love him.
Tumblr media
this is cool. this art is really really cool.
he leaped from a building right towards a helicopter that’s actively shooting at him, but none of the bullets are touching him. none of the corruption of the city can touch him no matter how hard it tries, because he’s too good to be corrupted. Comic Book Logic Can Be Good Sometimes Actually.
Tumblr media
batman’s belt what??? swiss army knife who?? sorry, i only know nightwing’s bright blue escrima.
Tumblr media
this is one of my favourite things about heroes with exceptional abilities, even more so if the hero is human. the things they can do are so far beyond the realm of normal human abilities that it’s equal parts terrifying and awe-inspiring every time they act.
he just used modified grappling wires to hook to the door of a moving helicopter, swung around the helicopter safely without hitting the blades, gained exactly the right momentum to swing upward again right through the opening of helicopter, then fought and tied up the men before they had any idea what was happening. that’s near impossible to do.
it’s stuff like this where i just sort of sigh in contentment. no matter how many times they leave out dick’s detective skills or conveniently forget that he’s actually a master planner and team leader and make him out to be this forgetful dude who makes everything up on the fly because of his “circus roots,” at least they won’t ever take away dick’s sheer physical ability honed to perfection.
the art, too! in a few panels, dick’s drawn a little lightened or blurred. he’s moving so quickly and fighting so efficiently that he can barely be seen by the enemy. he’s got perfect form all the way through.
Tumblr media
and THIS!
there was a helicopter that had five men shooting at him with what looks like machine guns. most people would be dead. some would run away, and be nimble enough to survive without fatal hits. there are very few people, even in fucking comic books, who can look at that hopeless situation and turn it around so quickly and thoroughly that he benefits from it instead.
i just. love nightwing.
Tumblr media
it was funny the first time as a comic reader aware of the meme. it’s really not anymore. why the hell would you, in universe, be wearing a shirt that has a picture of your boyfriend being hit in the face by his father.
Tumblr media
okay that was funny.
look at lil bitewing, so concerned for her human!!! love her sm.
also a question as to the timeline of things. is nightwing happening before or after urban legends?
Tumblr media
i was so distracted by dick wearing a robe and briefs and nothing else that i didn’t register the second part until later. he slept for two days?? babs, baby, he recently had a very traumatic brain injury. why do you sound so nonchalant?
Tumblr media
@TIM X COFFEE SHIPPERS GET FUCCCCKKKKEEDDDDD
Tumblr media
ngl i totally forgot about that dude oops
Tumblr media
this comic is giving so many reaction pictures. you know how you always use the worst possible picture of your friend for your friend’s contact picture? i’m just getting so many of these.
Tumblr media
leslie!!! the titans!!! lucius!!! dick going to go see old friends!!!! the titans!!! this part made me so irrationally happy it really did. gar being the one to just. offer dick solutions with open arms. this was the best
Tumblr media
i wish i could just copy and paste this entire scene, but that would take up way too much space, so i’m just going to talk about it instead.
you gave me my name, nightwing, and you gave me some of the best advice i’ve received in my life: beautiful little throwback to nightwing’s origin. you’d be surprised at the amount of people who don’t know where the name came from, or who don’t know how much clark means to dick. and the fact that dick still looks up to clark as a hero, recognizes that clark isn’t always perfect and yet continues to hold him in such high esteem, and still looks back on advice that clark gave him fondly just warmed my heart so much.
for a man who has fearlessly stood up to darkseid, bruce will do a lot to avoid a conversation: “grrr. i’m the BATMAN. i’m so DARK and MYSTERIOUS. nobody knows the true me. no one ever will. i will be LONELY for the rest of my CURSED LIFE. such is the price of a hero. ignore my farmer himbo husband in the background”
but i don’t think there’s anything heroic about being a billionaire: another nod to how much dick follows clark’s example rather than bruce. yes, this was a very poignant and important criticism, and i think it’s wonderful that this was published in a pretty popular comic book. but the thing is, there is a way to be a heroic billionaire, but only in fictional universes. the way bruce, ollie, t’challa only ever use their wealth to help people. they donate massive amounts of money to charities that they themselves create so they know exactly how the money is being used. they hire people who aren’t likely to get jobs anywhere else and pay them much more than what a base living wage is. they use their power to help push progressive laws and social change. they are helping.
dick doesn’t fully see it that way. he spent more than half his childhood the son of a billionaire, but still believes that one could be more heroic when one doesn’t have obscene amounts of wealth. whose example do you think he followed to come to that conclusion?
superman looked up to alfred pennyworth?: i mean yea alfred may have been a wildly irresponsible guardian and one hell of an enabler but goddamn if he didn’t love his kid.
you don’t need my input. you’ve thought it all through: ooooooh this line made me grin. for so long, dick’s treated clark as a mentor and a guiding figure. he’s still seen as a kid, an up and coming, snot-nosed titan with dreams of a better world. clark still thinks of him as a kid, despite watching him grow up. but this little line was something i think dick needed sorely to hear. he doesn’t need anyone’s guiding hand on his shoulder, he doesn’t need to ask for permission. he doesn’t need clark to support him the way he did when he was a teenager. he’s all grown up now, and he doesn’t need clark’s help. i imagine it was a bit of a surprise for dick to hear that.
honestly, i couldn’t think of a better role model: ohhh but it doesn’t stop there. clark just straight up turns the tables on dick. imagine you’re dick, and you’ve looked up to this one hero your entire life, and then one day he turns to you and says that he thinks you’re so kind and smart and worthy of a person that he wants you to mentor his son!? goes to show just how much clark trusts dick.
i swear to god dick probably cries every time he hears clark compliment him because bruce is so rare and sparing with his praise that clark giving him the slightest hint of approval is just a dopamine rush.
also, now deathstroke and superman have both asked nightwing to mentor their kids. the juxtaposition is fuckin hysterical. imagine either of their reactions when they realize what kind of company they’re with
Tumblr media
lets talk colours for a second, because i absolutely adore how classic colour tropes have been subverted in this comic, and in this general run really.
warm tones have usually (usually, not always) been associated with light and comfort and friendship and,,,,,well,,,warmth. whereas cool tones are usually used to unsettle, or make a scene seem colder and put the reader on edge. this varies if a comic only uses cool tones, or only uses warm tones, but if a comic uses both, this is generally well-used.
that isn’t the case in this run.
dark red, orange, and other warm tones have been used to symbolize danger, action, attacks. hot pink isn’t usually included in this colour group, but it’s definitely part of it in this case. in contrast, scenes that have cool colours give us the impression of slipping into a comfortable, calm scene with babs, tim, the titans, and other allies. even the beginning scene with superman has this blue, but then it transitions into something more golden coloured. dawn broke over dick, as his new idea came to light, and that was reflected in the art (and the sunrise setting.)
Tumblr media
have there ever been times when dick’s longed for the comfort of his mask because he didn’t feel confident as dick grayson? i can’t think of any. i may be wrong, but this struck me as pretty ooc.
Tumblr media
am i just??? gay and reading this all wrong??
cause i was under the impression that when someone says they are grateful for your friendship you don’t immediately kiss them.
or is this like. normal straight mating rituals.
i mean he’s smiling afterward but still babs aren’t you supposed to at least make sure it’s okay first? you guys broke up a while back after you said something along the lines of “i want to be coworkers with you and nothing more because i don’t trust you or feel comfortable around you as a civilian anymore.” like lmao after you say something like that to someone i would assume that you don’t have the permission to just kiss them whenever you want.
Tumblr media
show of hands who else got real sad when they realized dick was talking about himself in this.
sure, he could be referencing the things he’s seen blockbuster pull, and the children on the streets. but “i’ve seen money used for enforcement,” sounds a little too close to dick’s entire life being destroyed by one man threatening the circus to pay protection money for me to completely ignore. and “i’ve seen the poorest and most vulnerable blamed and punished rather than assisted” becomes a lot worse when you remember dick was thrown in juvie for a couple months until bruce was able to obtain legal guardianship, and in there, not a authority figure believed him when he told them his parents were murdered.
he’s lived this before.
Tumblr media
a. mother. fucking. typo.
fucking why
Tumblr media
i mean i’ve stated my distaste for the batfamily groupchat before but like. this is reaching new levels of ridiculousness. jason sounds like he was written by a fanfic writer. tim sounds like he was written by a fanfic writer. steph sounds like she was written by someone who doesn’t know the first thing about steph and wanted to include her for “family points!!!!!” damian’s supposed to be completely off the grid, and everyone’s searching for him. i do love the way cass texts tho.
Tumblr media
well god fuck now i’m crying
dick got a phone call, a sorry, and a thank you out of bruce. i feel so much secondhand happiness for him, if that’s a thing. we’ll just ignore the way bruce looks ugly af and focus on the good parts okay?
and again with the colour symbolism here!
Tumblr media
i’m either going to love this or hate this. who knows, we’ll see.
Tumblr media
something something hearts something something pink is an evil colour something something. i need to know more about this guy but there’s definitely symbolism there.
Tumblr media
is it just me or does this dude look like the backstabbing traitorous absolutely motherfucking piece of shit villain that killed tadashi hamada in big hero 6?

Bravo's Banned List
With the help of @bravo-four-seal-team, @@jayhalsteadfan-2417 and @rebelwrites, we made a list.
A list, posted on various walls throughout the Naval base, the plane and the cage room. About 1/3 of it is typed up, the rest is in hastily written pen. Made by Blackburn to try and corral Bravo. It's doing its best.
Tag: @rebelwrites @chibsytelford @bravo-four-seal-team @velvetcardiganbucky @supervalcsi @abby-splace @itsonautopilot @thegirlwhoisalwayswriting @pinkrockstar19 @softi92 @mrsmarvelous1995 @jayhalsteadfan-2417

Federal authorities arrested a husband and wife in Bristol, Va., on Monday in connection with the Jan. 6th siege on the U.S. Capitol Building. Documents related to their cases were unsealed in federal court on Thursday.
Authorities say tips from the public led them to Joshua Bustle and Jessica Bustle. The couple is accused of entering the U.S. Capitol and posting about it on Facebook. Jessica Bustle’s multiple online accounts provided much of the evidence prosecutors used to compile a case against her, federal court documents indicate.
“Pence is a traitor,” one of Jessica’s posts read. “We stormed the capital. An unarmed peaceful woman down the hall from us was shot in neck by cops. It’’s insane here. We’re safe and heading home but have limited service.””
Another lengthy post read (in part) as follows:
“The amount of misinformation I’’m seeing is insane. Despite what you’’re being fed, the rally was nothing like what the media is portraying. My husband and I spent the majority of our time at the Health Freedom Rally which was a couple of blocks over from the Trump Rally. When we finally decided to head over to the capitol we were let in . . . like literally, my husband and I just WALKED right in with tons of other people.” The cops were nice . . . we were talking with them INSIDE of the capitol about not taking the CV tax and they agreed with us. There were no guns, weapons, and no violence. In fact, when we finally decided to go in after about 45min of it being wide open . . . there was a wooden podium UNTOUCHED just sitting there in the middle of trump supporters supposedly causing so much damage and mayhem. Yes, some Trump supporters were supposedly unruly . . . pushed past police to take selfies in congress seats.
What followed that was a bit of sarcasm and a claim that “ANTIFA puppets infiltrated the rally,” a claim that “Trump supporters are loving, patriot and peaceful people,” and that the mainstream media was full of “lies.”
As prosecutors have pointed out in case after case, the U.S. Capitol was officially closed to business Jan. 6 as Congress set to work counting electoral votes in favor of Joe Biden.
A Statement of Facts filed in federal court says Jessica Bustle had two Facebook profiles. Some of her messages were edited after they were originally posted, authorities stated.
Tumblr media
An FBI Special Agent reviewed captiol surveillance video. It showed the Bustles entering the building wearing what is believed to be the same clothing they were wearing in Facebook posts that day. The video shows the woman authorities believe to be Jessica was carrying the same anti-vaccine poster seen in Facebook photos on Jessica’s Facebook account. The sign reads as follows: ““MANDATORY MEDICAL PROCEDURES have NO Place in a FREE Society”.”
Tumblr media
I wonder how much of a lion they’ll be in prison. All I see are a couple sheep being willingly led to the slaughter.
Data transmitted by the couple’s electronic devices also placed them at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Federal prosecutors did not cite all of the messages reviewed by Law&Crime in charging documents against the husband or the wife.
Jessica Bustle’s primary Facebook profile was still active as of Thursday. In the profile reviewed by Law&Crime, Jessica described herself as a “wife” and a “mama” who appeared to state a preference for homeschooling her young children. She described herself as a “Truth Seeker” who liked the Bible passage Philippians 4:13. She shared several memes which described people who took vaccines as “lab rat[s]” and otherwise suggested that children should “never” be injected with vaccines.
“Will vaccinated people be able to give blood?” one post questioned. “If so, will those receiving the blood be made aware?”
Another showed a caricature of of Bill Gates and Dr. Anthony Fauci sitting on top of a giant needle. “Depopulation here we come” said the caption.
Yet another likened a COVID-19 vaccine card to a yellow Star of David similar to those the Nazis required Jews to wear during the World War II era. “This badge will allow you to go back to work, travel, buy, sell, and trade,” the meme erroneously claimed. “And it will cost you your soul.”
Other memes on her page chastised people who wore facemasks during the pandemic and said “millions of loving people” should get “together to overthrow the ruling class.”
She also shared a meme which questioned why “80 year old children’s books” were “being cancelled” while Cardi B’s song WAP was considered acceptable.
“You can have a bachelor degree and still be an idiot,” one post said.
“Masculinity isn’t toxic. The absence of it is,” read yet another. “Weak men are abusive and spiteful. Strong, masculine men are protective and loving.”
“I don’t know about you, but I’m not seeing posts about how great Biden is doing,” said another image.
Her occupation is described as a “Homemaker at The Bustle Household in Manassas, Virginia.”
Tumblr media
“I’ll be proud to say that I did not stay silent,” she wrote on Oct. 26, 2020. “I was on the right side of history, battling alongside some amazing freedom warriors as we fought like hell to get the TRUTH out and wake people up to the twisted agendas, lies and corruption. I’ll be proud to say I fought for every child’s life and right to live FREE and without fear.”
Other memes and posts shared images of ex-President Donald Trump and wished he would remain in the White House. One suggested on Nov. 11, 2020, that Joe Biden was trying to scrounge up write-in ballots to help solidify his win.
“The level of corruption going on in our government is unfathomable,” Jessica wrote on Nov. 14, 2020. “But, God is moving in this mess and exposing the hidden systems that have been in the shadows for far too long.”
“See y’all at the rally,” she concluded. In an attached image, Jessica wore a Trump shirt and hat, while Joshua wore a black “don’t tread on me” shirt. What followed were images posted on Nov. 17th of Trump supporters outside the U.S. Capitol and the U.S. Supreme Court building.
Several images were from the Jan. 6th events at the Capitol Complex.
“I refuse to fall for the hate and divide,” one post said. “Yesterday was monumental. I got to hang with so many amazing freedom keepers and my favorite dude [emoji] and he proudly proclaimed that WE’RE winning this war on medical freedom. [emojis] Our movement has grown to over 50% of people!!!! Y’all, that’s HUGE. So many people waking up and refusing to be injected with known toxins and poisons. [emojis]”
“Excited to stand for truth with my fellow patriots in DC today,” read a caption on another photo posted Jan. 6.
Another post questioned the authenticity of NASA’s moon landing.
The Bustles each face four counts: (1) knowingly entering of remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; (2) knowingly engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct in restricted buildings or grounds; (3) violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds; and (4) parading, demonstrating, or picketing on Capitol grounds.

Pedro Pascal on Fame and ‘The Mandalorian’: ‘Can We Cut the S— and Talk About the Child?’
By Adam B. Vary
Photographs by Beau Grealy
When Pedro Pascal was roughly 4 years old, he and his family went to see the 1978 hit movie “Superman,” starring Christopher Reeve. Pascal’s young parents had come to live in San Antonio after fleeing their native Chile during the rise of dictator Augusto Pinochet in the mid-1970s. Taking Pascal and his older sister to the movies — sometimes more than once a week — had become a kind of family ritual, a way to soak up as much American pop culture as possible.
At some point during this particular visit, Pascal needed to go to the bathroom, and his parents let him go by himself. “I didn’t really know how to read yet,” Pascal says with the same Cheshire grin that dazzled “Game of Thrones” fans during his run as the wily (and doomed) Oberyn Martel. “I did not find my way back to ‘Superman.'”
Instead, Pascal wandered into a different theater (he thinks it was showing the 1979 domestic drama “Kramer vs. Kramer,” but, again, he was 4). In his shock and bewilderment at being lost, he curled up into an open seat and fell asleep. When he woke up, the movie was over, the theater was empty, and his parents were standing over him. To his surprise, they seemed rather calm, but another detail sticks out even more.
“I know that they finished their movie,” he says, bending over in laughter. “My sister was trying to get a rise out of me by telling me, ‘This happened and that happened and then Superman did this and then, you know, the earthquake and spinning around the planet.'” In the face of such relentless sibling mockery, Pascal did the only logical thing: “I said, ‘All that happened in my movie too.'”
He had no way of knowing it at the time, of course, but some 40 years later, Pascal would in fact get the chance to star in a movie alongside a DC Comics superhero — not to mention battle Stormtroopers and, er, face off against the most formidable warrior in Westeros. After his breakout on “Game of Thrones,” he became an instant get-me-that-guy sensation, mostly as headstrong, taciturn men of action — from chasing drug traffickers in Colombia for three seasons on Netflix’s “Narcos” to squaring off against Denzel Washington in “The Equalizer 2.”
This year, though, Pascal finds himself poised for the kind of marquee career hes spent a lifetime dreaming about. On Oct. 30, he’ll return for Season 2 as the title star of “The Mandalorian,” Lucasfilm’s light-speed hit “Star Wars” series for Disney Plus that earned 15 Emmy nominations, including best drama, in its first season. And then on Dec. 25 — COVID-19 depending — he’ll play the slippery comic book villain Maxwell Lord opposite Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig in “Wonder Woman 1984.”
The roles are at once wildly divergent and the best showcase yet for Pascal’s elastic talents. In “The Mandalorian,” he must hide his face — and, in some episodes, his whole body — in a performance that pushes minimalism and restraint to an almost ascetic ideal. In “Wonder Woman 1984,” by stark contrast, he is delivering the kind of big, broad bad-guy character that populated the 1980s popcorn spectaculars of his youth.
“I continually am so surprised when everybody pegs him as such a serious guy,” says “Wonder Woman 1984” director Patty Jenkins. “I have to say, Pedro is one of the most appealing people I have known. He instantly becomes someone that everybody invites over and you want to have around and you want to talk to.”
Talk with Pascal for just five minutes — even when he’s stuck in his car because he ran out of time running errands before his flight to make it to the set of a Nicolas Cage movie in Budapest — and you get an immediate sense of what Jenkins is talking about. Before our interview really starts, Pascal points out, via Zoom, that my dog is licking his nether regions in the background. “Don’t stop him!” he says with an almost naughty reproach. “Let him live his life!”
Over our three such conversations, it’s also clear that Pascal’s great good humor and charm have been at once ballast for a number of striking hardships, and a bulwark that makes his hard-won success a challenge for him to fully accept.
Before Pascal knew anything about “The Mandalorian,” its showrunner and executive producer Jon Favreau knew he wanted Pascal to star in it.
“He feels very much like a classic movie star in his charm and his delivery,” says Favreau. “And he’s somebody who takes his craft very seriously.” Favreau felt Pascal had the presence and skill essential to deliver a character — named Din Djarin, but mostly called Mando — who spends virtually every second of his time on screen wearing a helmet, part of the sacrosanct creed of the Mandalorian order.
Convincing any actor to hide their face for the run of a series can be as precarious as escaping a Sarlacc pit. To win Pascal over in their initial meeting, Favreau brought him behind the “Mandalorian” curtain, into a conference room papered with storyboards covering the arc of the first season. “When he walked in, it must have felt a little surreal,” Favreau says. “You know, most of your experiences as an actor, people are kicking the tires to see if it’s a good fit. But in this case, everything was locked and loaded.”
Needless to say, it worked. “I hope this doesn’t sound like me fashioning myself like I’m, you know, so smart, but I agreed to do this [show] because the impression I had when I had my first meeting was that this is the next big s—,” Pascal says with a laugh.
Favreau’s determination to cast Pascal, however, put the actor in a tricky situation: Pascal’s own commitments to make “Wonder Woman 1984” in London and to perform in a Broadway run of “King Lear” with Glenda Jackson barreled right into the production schedule for “The Mandalorian.” Some scenes on the show, and in at least one case a full episode, would need to lean on the anonymity of the title character more than anyone had quite planned, with two stunt performers — Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder — playing Mando on set and Pascal dubbing in the dialogue months later.
Pascal was already being asked to smother one of his best tools as an actor, extraordinarily uncommon for anyone shouldering the newest iteration of a global live-action franchise. (Imagine Robert Downey Jr. only playing Iron Man while wearing a mask — you can’t!) Now he had to hand over control of Mando’s body to other performers too. Some actors would have walked away. Pascal didn’t.
“If there were more than just a couple of pages of a one-on-one scene, I did feel uneasy about not, in some instances, being able to totally author that,” he says. “But it was so easy in such a sort of practical and unexciting way for it to be up to them. When you’re dealing with a franchise as large as this, you are such a passenger to however they’re going to carve it out. It’s just so specific. It’s ‘Star Wars.'” (For Season 2, Pascal says he was on the set far more, though he still sat out many of Mando’s stunts.)
“The Mandalorian” was indeed the next big s—, helping to catapult the launch of Disney Plus to 26.5 million subscribers in its first six weeks. With the “Star Wars” movies frozen in carbonite until 2023 (at least), I noted offhand that he’s now effectively the face of one of the biggest pop-culture franchises in the world. Pascal could barely suppress rolling his eyes.
“I mean, come on, there isn’t a face!” he says with a laugh that feels maybe a little forced. “If you want to say, ‘You’re the silhouette’ — which is also a team effort — then, yeah.” He pauses. “Can we just cut the s— and talk about the Child?”
Yes, of course, the Child — or, as the rest of the galaxy calls it, Baby Yoda. Pascal first saw the incandescently cute creature during his download of “Mandalorian” storyboards in that initial meeting with Favreau. “Literally, my eyes following left to right, up and down, and, boom, Baby Yoda close to the end of the first episode,” he says. “That was when I was like, ‘Oh, yep, that’s a winner!'”
Baby Yoda is undeniably the breakout star of “The Mandalorian,” inspiring infinite memes and apocryphal basketball game sightings. But the show wouldn’t work if audiences weren’t invested in Mando’s evolving emotional connection to the wee scene stealer, something Favreau says Pascal understood from the jump. “He’s tracking the arc of that relationship,” says the showrunner. “His insight has made us rethink moments over the course of the show.” (As with all things “Star Wars,” questions about specifics are deflected in deference to the all-powerful Galactic Order of Spoilers.)
Even if Pascal couldn’t always be inside Mando’s body, he never left the character’s head, always aware of how this orphaned bounty hunter who caroms from planet to planet would look askance at anything that felt too good (or too adorable) to be true.
“The transience is something that I’m incredibly familiar with, you know?” Pascal says. “Understanding the opportunity for complexity under all of the armor was not hard for me.”
When Pascal was 4 months old, his parents had to leave him and his sister with their aunt, so they could go into hiding to avoid capture during Pinochet’s crackdown against his opposition. After six months, they finally managed to climb the walls of the Venezuelan embassy during a shift change and claim asylum; from there, the family relocated, first to Denmark, then to San Antonio, where Pascal’s father got a job as a physician.
Pascal was too young to remember any of this, and for a healthy stretch of his childhood, his complicated Chilean heritage sat in parallel to his life in the U.S. — separate tracks, equally important, never quite intersecting. By the time Pascal was 8, his family was able to take regular trips back to Chile to visit with his 34 first cousins. But he doesn’t remember really talking about any of his time there all that much with his American friends.
“I remember at one point not even realizing that my parents had accents until a friend was like, ‘Why does your mom talk like that?'” Pascal says. “And I remember thinking, like what?”
Besides, he loved his life in San Antonio. His father took him and his sister to Spurs basketball games during the week if their homework was done. He hoodwinked his mother into letting him see “Poltergeist” at the local multiplex. He watched just about anything on cable; the HBO special of Whoopi Goldberg’s one-woman Broadway show knocked him flat. He remembers seeing Henry Thomas in “E.T.” and Christian Bale in “Empire of the Sun” and wishing ardently, urgently, I want to live those stories too.
Then his father got a job in Orange County, Calif. After Pascal finished the fifth grade, they moved there. It was a shock. “There were two really, really rough years,” he says. “A lot of bullying.”
His mother found him a nascent performing arts high school in the area, and Pascal burrowed even further into his obsessions, devouring any play or movie he could get his hands on. His senior year, a friend of his mother’s gave Pascal her ticket to a long two-part play running in downtown Los Angeles that her bad back couldn’t withstand. He got out of school early to drive there by himself. It was the pre-Broadway run of “Angels in America.”
“And it changed me,” he says with almost religious awe. “It changed me.”
After studying acting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Pascal booked a succession of solid gigs, like MTV’s “Undressed” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” But the sudden death of his mother — who’d only just been permitted to move back to Chile a few years earlier — took the wind right from Pascal’s sails. He lost his agent, and his career stalled almost completely.
As a tribute to her, he decided to change his professional last name from Balmaceda, his father’s, to Pascal, his mother’s. “And also, because Americans had such a hard time pronouncing Balmaceda,” he says. “It was exhausting.”
Pascal even tried swapping out Pedro for Alexander (an homage to Ingmar Bergman’s “Fanny and Alexander,” one of the formative films of his youth). “I was willing to do absolutely anything to work more,” he says. “And that meant if people felt confused by who they were looking at in the casting room because his first name was Pedro, then I’ll change that. It didn’t work.”
It was a desperately lean time for Pascal. He booked an occasional “Law & Order” episode, but mostly he was pounding the pavement along with his other New York theater friends — like Oscar Isaac, who met Pascal doing an Off Broadway play. They became fast, lifelong friends, bonding over their shared passions and frustrations as actors.
“It’s gotten better, but at that point, it was so easy to be pigeonholed in very specific roles because we’re Latinos,” says Isaac. “It’s like, how many gang member roles am I going to be sent?” As with so many actors, the dream Pascal and Isaac shared to live the stories of their childhoods had been stripped down to its most basic utility. “The dream was to be able to pay rent,” says Isaac. “There wasn’t a strategy. We were just struggling. It was talking about how to do this thing that we both love but seems kind of insurmountable.”
As with so few actors, that dream was finally rekindled through sheer nerve and the luck of who you know, when another lifelong friend, actor Sarah Paulson, agreed to pass along Pascal’s audition for Oberyn Martell to her best friend Amanda Peet, who is married to “Game of Thrones” co-showrunner David Benioff.
“First of all, it was an iPhone selfie audition, which was unusual,” Benioff remembers over email. “And this wasn’t one of the new-fangled iPhones with the fancy cameras. It looked like s—; it was shot vertical; the whole thing was very amateurish. Except for the performance, which was intense and believable and just right.”
Before Pascal knew it, he found himself in Belfast, sitting inside the Great Hall of the Red Keep as one of the judges at Tyrion Lannister’s trial for the murder of King Joffrey. “I was between Charles Dance and Lena Headey, with a view of the entire f—ing set,” Pascal says, his eyes wide and astonished still at the memory. “I couldn’t believe I didn’t have an uncomfortable costume on. You know, I got to sit — and with this view.” He sighs. “It strangely aligned itself with the kind of thinking I was developing as a child that, at that point, I was convinced was not happening.”
And then it all started to happen.
In early 2018, while Pascal was in Hawaii preparing to make the Netflix thriller “Triple Frontier” — opposite his old friend Isaac — he got a call from the film’s producer Charles Roven, who told him Patty Jenkins wanted to meet with him in London to discuss a role in another film Roven was producing, “Wonder Woman 1984.”
“It was a f—ing offer,” Pascal says in an incredulous whisper. “I wasn’t really grasping that Patty wanted to talk to me about a part that I was going to play, not a part that I needed to get. I wasn’t able to totally accept that.”
Pascal had actually shot a TV pilot with Jenkins that wasn’t picked up, made right before his life-changing run on “Game of Thrones” aired. “I got to work with Patty for three days or something and then thought I’d never see her again,” he says. “I didn’t even know she remembered me from that.”
She did. “I worked with him, so I knew him,” she says. “I didn’t need him to prove anything for me. I just loved the idea of him, and I thought he would be kind of unexpected, because he doesn’t scream ‘villain.'”
In Jenkins’ vision, Max Lord — a longstanding DC Comics rogue who shares a particularly tangled history with Wonder Woman — is a slick, self-styled tycoon with a knack for manipulation and an undercurrent of genuine pathos. It was the kind of larger-than-life character Pascal had never been asked to tackle before, so he did something equally unorthodox: He transformed his script into a kind of pop-art scrapbook, filled with blown-up photocopies of Max Lord from the comic books that Pascal then manipulated through his lens on the character.
Even the few pages Pascal flashes to me over Zoom are quite revealing. One, featuring Max sporting a power suit and a smarmy grin, has several burned-out holes, including through the character’s eye. Another page features Max surrounded by text bubbles into which Pascal has written, over and over and over again in itty-bitty lettering, “You are a f—ing piece of s—.”
“I felt like I had wake myself up again in a big way,” he says. “This was just a practical way of, like, instead of going home tired and putting Netflix on, [I would] actually deal with this physical thing, doodle and think about it and run it.”
Jenkins is so bullish on Pascal’s performance that she thinks it could explode his career in the same way her 2003 film “Monster” forever changed how the industry saw Charlize Theron. “I would never cast him as just the stoic, quiet guy,” Jenkins says. “I almost think he’s unrecognizable from ‘Narcos’ to ‘Wonder Woman.’ Wouldn’t even know that was the same guy. But I think that may change.”
When people can see “Wonder Woman 1984” remains caught in the chaos the pandemic has wreaked on the industry; both Pascal and Jenkins are hopeful the Dec. 25 release date will stick, but neither is terribly sure it will. Perhaps it’s because of that uncertainty, perhaps it’s because he’s spent his life on the outside of a dream he’s now suddenly living, but Pascal does not share Jenkins’ optimism that his experience making “Wonder Woman 1984” will open doors to more opportunities like it.
“It will never happen again,” Pascal says, once more in that incredulous whisper. “It felt so special.”
After all he’s done in a few short years, why wouldn’t Pascal think more roles like this are on his horizon?
“I don’t know!” he finally says with a playful — and pointed — howl. “I’m protecting myself psychologically! It’s just all too good to be true! How dare I!”

A list of fandoms I'm in (in no particular order, will probably be updated regularly. Some fandoms are more intense and some are more casual. Depending on the fandom, I could go on and on about fandom topics for HOURS. Let's get into it!)
Harry Potter, Disney, Marvel, DC comics, Miraculous Ladybug, Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra, Star Wars, Literature, Winx Club, Nintendo, Minecraft, Little Witch Academia, Voltron, Coraline
Details:
Harry Potter- I got into Harry Potter in 7th grade and now I am the resident expert in my family and in my friend group. I read all the books, watched all the movies (notably the British version), and I've seen the Fantastic Beasts films as well. I've also read Tales of Beedle the Bard (the Warlock's Hairy Heart was traumatizing) along with the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them textbook (plus an updated edition). I also read The Cursed Child script and while I mean no hate to anyone that liked it, I hated what it did to the canon. I am in Hufflepuff with some Ravenclaw tendencies (I took the Pottermore quiz 3 times, 2 out of 3 I got Hufflepuff, the other time was Ravenclaw). I had a pottermore account and I was so upset when it got converted to the Wizarding World page. I cosplayed Hermione in 7th grade complete with British accent and even monologued as her for a talent show (classmates and teachers would recognize me as the Hermione girl all the way through high school). I was obsessed and I still love it even if J.K. Rowling has gone off the deep end on Twitter... yeah... my favorite character is Hermione but I also relate to Luna
Disney- there's so much that goes into the Disney part of my fandom list. I'm excluding Marvel and Star Wars from this part as they were originally separate entities before Disney got the rights to them. I have seen almost every animated Disney film ever and often use random movie quotes in conversation. My favorite villain is Maleficent, my favorite princess is Ariel (followed by Belle, Rapunzel, and Anna). I relate to so many of the characters. I'm not sure who my favorite Pixar character is though (I love Violet, Sadness, Dory, and Piper (from the short)). My favorite Disney fairy is Fawn. My favorite characters overall are Ariel and Stitch. Disney is definitely on the list as one of my biggest obsessions. My favorite movies are Lilo and Stitch, the Little Mermaid, Inside Out, Alice in Wonderland (original), and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Marvel- I mostly get my Marvel exposure through the MCU, other movies, and animated TV shows. I have difficulty reading graphic novels so most of my comic book knowledge comes from friends, posts, or wikis. My favorite characters are Spider-Man, Captain America, Peggy Carter, and Scarlet Witch. I also like Gwenpool, Deadpool, Spider-Gwen/ Ghost-Spider, Venom, Squirrel Girl, Daredevil, Mantis, Gamora, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor, Loki, Bucky, Black Panther, and most MCU characters. Out of the X-men I really like Professor X, Wolverine, Mystique, Magneto, Nightcrawler, and Quicksilver (either version- MCU or Fox).
DC- this was the franchise I was more familiar with growing up but again, graphic novels aren't easy for me to read so most of my knowledge comes from information pages about the comics or from tv/movies. My earliest experience with DC came from the 60s Batman series, with Catwoman and Robin being my favorites. I also watched the Wonder Woman series from the 70s and a handful of CW shows, my favorite of which being the Flash and Arrow. I also managed to watch all 5 seasons of the Teen Titans Cartoon Network series from 2003. With that being said, my favorite characters are Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Flash, Batman, Nightwing/Robin (Dick Grayson), Green Arrow, Starfire, Raven, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Alfred. I also like most of the bat family, and when it comes to CW I LOVE Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost and Cisco.
Miraculous- this is one of my guilty fandoms but since this is Tumblr I'm not too worried about it. I love Marinette and I relate to her on an astoundingly deep level (minus the stalking and obsession with potential lovers, that's creepy). If I had a miraculous, I'd probably want the Ladybug one, but the Cat miraculous, fox miraculous, and snake miraculous are good too. My favorite character is Marinette/Ladybug.
Atla/Tlok- I jumped on the avatar bandwagon just when it was starting to get popular, so I managed to get through the series before the memes took over everything. Same with Tlok, although i couldn't completely avoid the spoilers for that when i started it. I've been wanting to get into the comics because of the short story comics I've read, they seem easier to read than superhero comics. My favorite characters are Aang, Katara, Ty Lee, Iroh, Korra, Jinora, Asami, Suki, Appa, Momo, Naga, and Pabu. I also like Sokka, Mai, Zuko, Lin, Kuvira, Varrick, Zhu Lee, and Azula. I feel really sorry for her and while I understand that a redemption arc would undermine the importance of her corruption arc, I still wish she could have one. I would love to be a waterbender or an airbender... maybe a waterbender raised in the air nation? Obviously, being the avatar itself would be awesome. The show has taught me a lot of great lessons and put a lot of stuff into perspective for me.
Star Wars- oh boy, talking about this one is dangerous. I've seen firsthand the horrors of the Star Wars fandom but then again no one will probably see this anyway so... I've seen all the movies and I remember watching the clone wars series with my brother when I was younger but we fell wayyy behind and it's taking us forever to get back into it. I've also seen the Mandalorian and quite enjoyed it. I like the prequels unironically, in fact, the prequels are some of my favorite movies. I especially like how they switched from lightsabers being heavy weapons to light weapons that can be used for all kinds of tricks that make for epic battles like the ones we see in Revenge of the Sith. The sequels were fun to watch but when I would analyze them along side their predecessors, I came to the conclusion that, for me, they were good to watch but did not do anything good for the rest of the franchise. My favorite characters are prequels/clone wars Obi Wan and Anakin, Padme, Ashoka, Leia, R2D2, BB-8, R4-P17, the Mandalorian (Din Djarin), and Grogu. If I had a lightsaber I'd want it to be blue, but when I was little I got a purple one like Mace Windu because it was closer to pink and I was into pink at the time. I still have that lightsaber and none of my friends have a purple one so it's one of my flexes. I feel like I wouldn't make a good jedi because of attachments being forbidden, so I'd probably become a grey jedi.
Literature- this is a broad term I use to cover all the random books and stories I liked reading and have studied. So we have Shakespeare (Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet), The Great Gatsby (bored while reading, loved to analyze), Grendel (HATED reading, loved to analyze, Grendel really needed a hug and a friend), The Crucible, Fahrenheit 451, Dark Life (+ the sequel Riptide, both are by Kat Falls good reads, sci-fi and kind of dystopian), The Once and Future King
Winx Club- I think the show is trashy but I still love watching it. I haven't been able to get through season 6 though and I hated what they did with season 8 and Fate: the Winx Saga. My favorite character is Bloom along with Stella and Flora. I prefer rai to nick. My favorite transformations are magic winx, enchantix, and harmonix. My favorite member of the Trix is Icy followed by Darcy. My favorite Pixies are Chatta and Lockette.
Nintendo- mainly Pokémon above all else, followed by Animal Crossing. I have also played (mostly as player 2 or just never beat or watched my brother play) mario games, legend of zelda, pikmin, and kirby. Games I haven't played but I just liked the characters/the lore and probably learned about through Super Smash Bros. are Fire Emblem (Lucina mostly), Metroid (Samus and baby metroid), and Kid Icarus. Pokémon is where I'm most knowledgeable but you'll most likely beat me in battle. I am however great at MarioKart and I always destroy my friends at it. Terrible at fighting games though.
Minecraft- I like playing this casually. Sure, I'll play for hours and hours on end for months, but I prefer to stay exclusively in peaceful when playing Survival mode and I don't make anything too ambitious in Creative mode. I like to write, so sometimes I'll make a rough layout of the settings of my stories in different worlds. I prefer interior design and decorating when building, and when in survival mode I focus more on mining and gathering while my brother works on ambitious building projects. I just bring him the raw materials and furnish the interior when he finishes the outside.
Little Witch Academia- this takes up a smaller portion of my fandom list because there were only 2 seasons and a couple movies and I watched the whole series years ago, but I still enjoy it. At one point I wanted to cosplay Akko, and I loved the nod at Twilight through the Nightfall series. And I especially liked the twist that Shiny Chariot was Ursula, which I suspected for some time. The blend between magic and technology was fun to see, but I was so sad that the series ended RIGHT when Akko finally showed signs of magic proficiency. Also, Shiny Chariot being the reason Akko couldn't do magic was heartbreaking.
Voltron- this takes up a much smaller portion of my fandom list mainly because I haven't even finished it. I know hardly anything about Transformers aside from the Bumblebee movie so to me I just watch it for fun. It reminds me of power rangers, star wars, and star trek, and then there's just a transformer insert. But I don't know anything about Transformers so maybe the show is more rooted in canon than I think.
Coraline- I am in a love-hate relationship with Coraline. I have watched the movie several times, I've read the book, I've watched hours of theories and analyses on youtube, I've watched behind the scenes videos by Laika, and I even wrote a script for a fan film parody. I am amazed at how original the story is and how impressive the stop motion animation is but I also have recurring nightmares from it and it scares me/creeps me out to the max. If anyone asks what my scariness limit is, it's definitely Coraline.

Ship Meme
I was tagged by both @ciceroisthefamilycat and @the-white-w0lf, so thank you both!
1. favorite ship
Can’t do it, how dare you? Instead, I think I will summarize at the end of this list what I think my favorite ships all tend to contain.
2. first ship: (Mary Poppins and Bert, Mary Poppins)
Tumblr media
These two were OTP before child me even knew what an OTP was. The only bit I liked from the stage musical more than the movie was them kissing each other on the cheek.
3. first ship you were crazy for: (The Doctor and River Song, Doctor Who)
Tumblr media
Oh man, can I just sit there for hours thinking about these two. Doctor/River was probably the first time I got into writing fanfiction specifically for the ship as opposed to just playing around with the characters for fun (it’s all on a very old FFN account - no, I’m not sharing the penname). There’s just so many layers to their dynamic and a crazy amount of chemistry to carry it off. The only reason I don’t still write as much for them as I used to is just because I wrote so much I’d need to come up with new ideas; but every so often, I still do.
4. newest ship favorite queer-platonic ship: The Doctor and his Ponds (The Doctor, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, Doctor Who)
Tumblr media
I haven’t been watching much lately, so I don’t really have any new ships at the moment and thought I’d highlight a dynamic that goes through a lot of different stages and results in so much depth and so much unsaid. The development of Amy and Rory’s characters and how their relationship plus their relationships with the Doctor and their growth into a three-person unit is endlessly fascinating to me (and I used to write a lot of fics about it, too). Not once did any character have to refer to the other two as a “fam” in order for us to get that they are family in every sense, and not just through marriage (as funny as that is). It’s a totally different dynamic than any the Doctor has really had with a set of companions, and I don’t think we’ll ever really get it again. And I’m okay with that. They are unique in the universe.
5. ship you like but no one else does: Karolsen (Kara Danvers and James Olsen, Supergirl)
Tumblr media
Sue me, I thought they were cute in the first and only season I watched, and a big factor in my decision to not continue watching the show was hearing they retconned Kara’s feelings for James and broke them up before they even got to have a date (and then got her together with a white guy who owned slaves on his old planet but if I think about that for too long that’s not gonna be great for my blood pressure). The least the writers could have done was try out writing them as a couple since they spent a whole season building up to it.
6. ship you wish was endgame: Lauriver (Dinah Laurel Lance/Black Canary and Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Arrow)
Tumblr media
Anyone that reads my fics or my various Arrow ask game posts knows how much I hate what was done to these two. And frankly, by abandoning this relationship, the writers ended up completely sabotaging their protagonist’s hero’s journey to the point where he’s largely regarded as the biggest jerk in the Arrowverse, not to mention the heaps of disrespect they shoved onto one of DC’s most beloved heroines, and for what? Steadily falling ratings and a reputation of what not to do when making an adaptation. Should’ve just delivered on what you promised.
7. ship you wish had more screen/page time
Tumblr media
As much as I believe Ginny needed to have a life separate from Harry for most of the books in order to disprove the “obsessed fangirl” argument people make about her, I still can’t help but feel like she would have been an invaluable asset in the Horcrux Hunt (plus she deserved to destroy one after the Hell she went through as a girl thanks to one). I hope blvnk doesn’t mind but tbh it’s her versions of the characters I picture more than the movies these days.
8. ship you wish has more screentime: HarleyIvy (Harleen “Harley Quinn” Quinzel and Pamela “Poison Ivy” Isley, Harley Quinn)
Tumblr media
Now that these two finally confessed their feelings for each other in the season 2 finale, it’d be nice to see them navigate being an actual couple in season 3, whenever that may drop.
9. ship you wish was canon: (The Doctor and Donna Noble, Doctor Who)
Tumblr media
It is bizarre how perfect these two are for each other, and yet... On one hand, I get that Donna was meant to be something different after two successive companions had crushes on the Doctor. But damn, if RTD didn’t accidentally just end up showing off how much deeper and truer the love between these two was than the infatuations or puppy love that came before. Doctor Who isn’t really a show designed to have a permanent canon couple, but I sure wish these two had had a chance to be for a little while at least.
10. ship you want to be believe was canon: Piercintyre (Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce and “Trapper” John McIntyre, M*A*S*H)

This show was made in the 70s and set during the 50s, so obviously any kind of confirmation of non-platonic bonds between same-sex characters was going to be a no-no. But c’mon.
So, to get back to question 1, overall I think my ship preferences tend to involve friends (oftentimes best friends) whose relationships grow from the platonic to the romantic (or sometimes even the reverse). Even when there isn’t necessarily a deep foundation/past to the characters, there has to be common, shared interests or goals beyond thinking the other character is hot. A lot of times these ships end up having different stages or layers and even sometimes complications to them, but when the chips are down they’re there for each other (unless the writers force them to make some ridiculous OOC decision to keep their idea of a plot going, but I digress...)

11, 20, 21, 24 for the writing meme!
11. what do you envy in other writers?
oh god, so many things. i feel like i almost just envy how other people’s brains work, you know? i envy the things that seem to come naturally to others that have never come naturally to me. i envy people who think of and plot out novel-length stories. i envy people who CONSCIOUSLY think of and write things that, like, Mean something, you know? almost every time i have written something with a Meaning it has been either incidental or accidental, and there are these folks out here writing whole-ass allegories and shit, how do you even?? think of that??? where is symbolism stored in the body???
lately i’ve also been really envious of folks working on original fictional projects, because it’s been a really long time since i’ve, like. really felt like doing that. like i’ll get a little burst of energy for it every now and then, but lately i just get bored with my own stuff very quickly. i feel like i’m not actually very creative, and like the things i come up with on my own are very lackluster. so i’d rather just put on someone else’s writing style and play with someone else’s characters than try to do something on my own.
20. tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
see, this is what i mean when i say i don’t write things that Mean anything, lol. i am, like, really struggling to think of anything that would qualify as “meta” for anything i’ve written, really.
i guess in blood for your rude brawls i did include a cheeky little reference to r&j (like, the actual text of it; i understand that it is half an r&j fic lol). i have valentine say “we pay your horse, and not your scruples” as a kind of silly reference to romeo’s “i pay thy poverty, and not thy will.” no one has ever pointed it out so i wasn’t sure anyone got it, but it makes me smile, lol.
actually, now that i’m looking at it again, i really like that whole exchange, because in the early witcher books there’s a lot of talk about geralt and his “witcher’s scruples,” so it’s really kind of a perfect bilateral reference to both of the works included in the crossover. :)
21. what other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)
i’ve always wanted to write comic scripts!!! and i think the things i write are both condensed enough and like visceral enough that they would translate pretty well into your like 32-page monthly format. i’m just very intimidated by them, also, because comic script styles vary so much from writer to writer so i’m not sure, like. i don’t really know how one breaks into the comic-writing game, necessarily, lol. because you have comic writers who are essentially also artists who storyboard out every panel and stuff for the pencillers/colorists etc to work from, and then you have folks who just write essentially a play script and like describe with words what folks are doing and what the overall Vibe should be and where the big fight scenes and splash pages and whatever should go, and the artists have a lot more freedom to kind of play with all of that. it just depends pretty heavily on who you’re working with and your relationship with the artists on your book, i guess.
but anyway i digress what i’m saying is that dc should just let me write a nightwing book. give me a dynamic duo alternate universe slash spinoff. jim lee if you’re reading this
24. would you say your writing has changed over time?
i started the valentine’s day tradition to chart this very thing, so i can confidently say: i’m not sure?? lol.
i mean, i think i’ve gotten better. i hope i’ve gotten better. but i don’t really think, overall, my style has changed all that much. i think i just execute that style more efficiently now. it’s cleaner, it’s tighter. i guess one thing i’ve notably improved on is sensory details; i’ve never been great at settings, but you can at least kind of feel the air around you in some of the things i write now, where you couldn’t really before, i don’t think.
so in summary, any changes that have happened haven’t been drastic, but i hope at least that they’ve been good, lol.

Justice League #1 (1987)
Tumblr media
This is actually a more impressive line-up than I remember.
I'm pretty sure this line-up is a huge scam. I don't remember Doctor Fate interacting too much with this group and I think Shazam bows out fairly quickly. Batman probably does that thing where he acts like he's leader (even if Martian Manhunter actually is) and only helps out every sixth mission. So at that point, the line-up is already decreasing in strength and intimidation factor quickly. Adding Fire, Ice, and Booster Gold later won't really improve the team much. But I'm getting ahead of myself. My impressions from this initial cover were "Wow! Pretty interesting team!" and "What asshole fucking decided on the shit stencil font for the title?" Sorry, I cuss a lot when I'm writing on the Internet and trying to seem like a bad-ass. The issue begins with Guy Gardner calling the other Green Lanterns jerks and suggesting, to himself, that he should be the Commander-in-Chief of the new Justice League. Some people would read this first page and think, "What an arrogant fucking asshole." But my stomach got all queasy and I giggled a little bit and I muttered quietly under my breath, "I love him."
Tumblr media
I'm not saying it isn't composed of some truly ridiculous aspects but Guy still has the best costume in the DC Universe.
I don't love everything about Guy Gardner because most writers at the time didn't truly understand him. They made him a jerk that nobody would like because they were too cold-hearted to see the brain damaged cool guy that he really was. Guy Gardner often needed to be written by somebody who loved the character; it would have done him a world of good. He could still have been that abrasive jerk. But written deftly, those who actually cared to take the time would see his true self. Sure, that would also be an abrasive jerk! But a little bit more likable!
Tumblr media
Stallone was pretty sensitive in a few scenes in Rocky IV!
Black Canary is second to arrive, after which Mister Miracle and Oberon show up. I never quite understood how Oberon fit into the Justice League. Wasn't he like an agent or a manager? Did Batman and Martian Manhunter need Oberon to sign off on every mission or else Scott Free would have to remain behind? I bet he was included just so Giffen and DeMatteis could make dwarf jokes.
Tumblr media
Why would Guy choose Sneezy?! Oberon's breathing has been impeccable since he arrived!
Normally after some kind of cynical prediction about the comic book that immediately is proved true, I'd write, "Grandmaster Comic Book Reader!" But it doesn't feel right to say it in this case. I mean, Oberon is present for four panels before he becomes the butt of a joke based on his diminutive nature. And by Guy Gardner, no less! Is this why I loved him so much at sixteen?! What a terrible and typical sixteen year old white heterosexual male I was! Black Canary (whose costume I'm just now noticing is really fucking weird) responds to Guy's awful behavior by saying, "Dozens of GLs around and we get 'Rambo' with a ring!" That's unfair to Rambo! I'm also unsure who in this story (including the writers of this story) have actually seen First Blood. Gardner is more like the authority mad Sheriff Teasle than the sensitive green beret John Rambo! Rambo should be admired as a hero, battling back against corrupt cops who think they have the right to use as much force as they want for any stupid fucking reason! It's possible they were talking about the Rambo from the second film who gets to kill more than one person because the people he's killing are Russians and Vietnamese. He does get a bit murder crazy in the second film. Or maybe they're talking about Rambo from the third film which wasn't actually out yet so I don't have to read up on it. Next to arrive are Captain Marvel, Blue Beetle, and Martian Manhunter. Martian Manhunter proves to be a buzzkill, reminding everybody how the old series ended in total death and disaster.
Tumblr media
His view of the media is pretty spot on though.
J'onn calls up the files of Steel, Gypsy, Vixen, and Vibe before purging them completely from the Justice League computer. That's probably a good idea, like deleting old joke tweets on Twitter that were a bit racist and also boring. Meanwhile Maxwell Lord IV watches from a distance, doing that Ozymandias thing where you watch dozens of televisions at once. I think it proves you're a genius whose done the research and contemplated all sides of an issue before making up your totally rational and logical mind about any issue. As opposed to us losers who simply use compassion and empathy to almost immediately understand the correct and most ethical path to take. Maxwell Lord IV watches all of this television and decides the correct course to take is to leave the "America" off of the Justice League of America this time. Oh, and also the "of".
Tumblr media
Maybe this is why I liked Guy so much: because he knew the saying was "you've got another think coming." Look, I'm going to be desperately finding good reasons to have liked Guy Gardner so much when Giffen and DeMatteis are this determined to make him a huge and unlikable jerk.
Look, I was sixteen! Hardly the best time in a young man's life for qualities like compassion and empathy and fashion sense and hair styles! I'm also fairly certain it wasn't this comic book that made me like him so much. I'm pretty sure he gets knocked out by Batman with one punch before the year is over and I remember loving that scene. So I probably despised him like a good reader of Justice League was supposed to do. Hopefully he'll have some character moments during this series that will show why I wound up liking him so much as a character. Right now, he's just a complete and utter asshole. The five panels following the one I just scanned consist of Guy once again calling Oberon "Sneezy" and then suggesting Black Canary is going to want to fuck him soon enough. Martian Manhunter tries to break it up and just winds up part of the chaos.
Tumblr media
Okay, I'm starting to get why I might have liked him at sixteen, even after the first few pages. To a sixteen year old white male, mocking Martian Manhunter with a "Ho-ho-ho" trumps ableism, sexism, and, with this attack on J'onn for his inherent physical Martianness, almost certainly racism as well.
Guy continues to play the role of Squeaky Wheel for another page or two. I suppose if you want more on-panel time than the other heroes, you've got to be a raging asshole. I can't say I'm not entertained by it!
Tumblr media
Captain Marvel earns a little of my love with this line as well. No shame in drinking warm milk at night!
This is only nine pages into the first issue and Guy has completely derailed the formation of the new Justice League. Was this blasphemy to previous fans of the Justice League where the team may have had some minor squabbles about various things and Batman would quit every six issues but mostly they didn't break out into brawls whenever they got together? Or were internal struggles and arguments a regular plot point? I have no idea because the only Justice League comics I read previous to this title were the terrible months where everything was breaking down and then Steel betrayed them and Vibe was killed off and Martian Manhunter felt like a huge failure. Although was Aquaman leading the team at the time? I dislike Aquaman so much, I'm just going to believe he was leading the team and that's why everything completely fell apart. He sucks. Once per day, I think about that lousy meme trying to prove Aquaman wasn't useless by using the image from New 52 Justice League where he controls a bunch of great whites to breach and kill a bunch of parademons and I hate everybody who actually thought that was a cool moment. Batman and Doctor Fate arrive in the middle of the Justice League brawl (which even Martian Manhunter, the only adult in the room, is taken part in) and shuts shit down The Batman way.
Tumblr media
I guess heroes are also a cowardly lot.
Meanwhile, Doctor Light winds up being held hostage with the rest of the United Nations by some white terrorists. I felt I needed to say they were white because a lot of racist assholes can only envision terrorists one way. Also, I should always describe people as white when they're white since I don't want to be an accomplice to maintaining a world where we assume a person mentioned is white, male, and heterosexual unless they're described more fully. Doctor Light was given a Justice League emergency beeper by a mysterious figure some time previously. This isn't revealed but I just read Justice League Spectacular #1 so I know Maxwell Lord gave her the device so that she could alert the Justice League when the United Nations was taken hostage by terrorists that Maxwell Lord IV paid. It's all about getting some early press! There's an advert for the new Flash which I'm surprised I didn't pick up since the advert shows him having some kind of accident in a sperm bank.
Tumblr media
Ew Flash is right!
The Justice League head over to stop the terrorist attack. At some point, Doctor Fate disappears to go do something else and I think he never comes back? Is that why I barely remember him as a part of this league? Was he just there to look cool on the cover and fool all the lovers of DC magic users? The League storms the UN, murdering several terrorists.
Tumblr media
Look. Manhunter either phased their heads into the solid ceiling or he smashed their skulls straight through the roof. Either way, I don't see a high percentage chance of their survival.
The Justice League capture all the terrorists and then Batman has the building evacuated, leaving just the leader of the terrorists alone in the United Nations building threatening to kill himself so that the bomb attached to his heart would detonate and kill them all. He does kill himself but the bomb doesn't detonate. And the thing is, Batman realized during the mission that the bomb was almost certainly a bluff. So he left the man alone to kill himself. Later we discover the man had a history of mental illness. So this, to Batman, is justice? Batman almost certainly realized the man was being manipulated and that he'd definitely kill himself to blow the bomb and Batman let the man do it. Batman is a fucking monster. After the event, the media points out that the terrorists were mostly composed of 60s radical groups like the Weathermen and the Black Panthers. Which is odd because there wasn't one black terrorist in the bunch. The issue ends with Max Lord talking to himself and admitting to being the one who staged the terrorist attack. He also knew the leader was unstable enough to kill himself for the cause and he sent him in with a bomb that definitely wouldn't blow. So he's a fucking monster as well. And Martian Manhunter is a monster, not because he's a weirdo martian, but because he basically popped the heads on a few of the terrorists. No way will I believe those guys hanging from the ceiling by their necks survived! All in all, Guy Gardner is starting to look like a rational member of this group! Justice League #1 Rating: B+. A better than average start to the new Justice League, building some intrigue and conflict right from the start. Who is Max Lord? What are his plans for the Justice League? Why is he acting like it's his group? Will Doctor Fate ever return? Will Oberon poison Guy Gardner? Will Black Canary and Doctor Light become best friends because they're the only women in the League? Will Guy Gardner and Batman ever come to blows? I can answer that! They will not! They'll just come to blow. One punch by Batman. And that one punch causes some severe psychological trauma to Gardner and nobody thinks he should get medical help simply because he starts acting nicer. They're all fucking monsters!

This year, though, Pascal finds himself poised for the kind of marquee career he’s spent a lifetime dreaming about.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
[ anonymous ]
[ Yeah, definitely! They're pretty much the same across all my blogs tbh. ]
🧡 Mun is 20, NB, uses she/he/they, and goes by Kirby.
🤎 I don’t care much for extensive plotting, rather preferring a basic idea for the beginning and going from there.
💚 As far as my style of formatting goes, I write how I would a story- both for comfort and keeping the theme, sometimes with actions and sometimes without- and rarely use icons outside of memes. That being said, I have no problem if my partner uses them, or formats considerably different from me, so long as I can read their reply.
🧡 I’m not too terribly picky about partners, but I am a bit of a stickler for literacy. Not multiple page long replies, of course- brevity can be used just as well in some scenarios- but I lose interest in poorly written one liners quickly. Spelling and grammer aren’t too much of an issue for me- I make my own fair share of typos and I’m usually good at filling in the blanks or making mental corrections- but again, it can become frustrating if my partner doesn’t seem to be making an effort.
🤎 I’m relatively experienced in RPing (~5 years), but I haven't been doing "serious" roleplay on Tumblr for long (less than a year.) I’m learning as I go, and I welcome any feedback or tips, but I’m also prone to doing things my own way. This blog is for fun, after all.
💚 I’m not comfortable with NSFW RP - dirty jokes and asks about such topics that aren’t too graphic or invasive are fine, as are fade to blacks (though I ask that you ask me first before your muse makes any advances.) I’m fine with sexual headcanons and will post some (along with related memes) every now and again. All will be tagged suggestive or nsfvv depending.
🧡 Duplicates and AUs/different universes are welcomed! I think it’s to be expected, given this is my personal version of Scarecrow. Subsequently, other DC characters will be regarded as separate Earth’s (i.e. Earth-3 Riddler versus Earth-1, etc.) Additionally, while I do have Jon already with my version of Bookworm in my main verse, I am 100% willing to fudge the timeline for a different ship with our muses. Feel free to hit me up and we can discuss!
🤎 Please refrain from godmodding. I know it’s sometimes necessary to briefly take control of another’s character (in the sense of anticipating their movements, timeskips, or their being somehow unconscious), but try not to be too controlling.
🧡 Always feel free to contact me OOC. Communication is important. It may take me a while to respond, and I may forget- which goes for threads as well- but I always try to. Granted I can be a little awkward and shy, but I don’t mean to come across rude.
🤎 That being said, I don’t mind and even appreciate a reminder every now and again if I haven’t replied to a thread in a while, but please don’t pester me incessantly about it.
💚 As with any Batman rogue no matter how prone to levity, there will be dark themes- not constantly, but certainly on occasion. I’ll do my best to tag appropriately, but don’t be afraid to give me a gentle heads up in the event I overlook something. I can say upfront that needles, religious (mainly Christian) themes, demons, violence/murder, drugs, alcohol, smoking, death, past child abuse, psychological abuse, manipulation, physical/mental torture, and blood/gore will be common.
🧡 I hope this goes without saying, but Jon's thoughts and opinions are not indicative of my own. If he’s being a horrendous, cruel bastard, that doesn’t necessarily mean I hate your character, etc.
🤎 As of the present, I will not be taking any m!as unless I reblog a meme, and I might veto some of the given options for my own comfort.
💚 Though he may acknowledge time based events like birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries, Jon exists in a purposefully vague point in time because, frankly, I’m horrible at timelines. I’m always willing to do threads that take place in the past or future, or even seperate timelines, but outside of those Jon will always be 38 regardless of what time has passed.
🧡 I don’t mind if you want to torment or attack Jon- physically, mentally, etc.- but I ask that it not be an all the time thing. Angst is lovely, but it becomes draining when it’s the only thing I do.

𝐼'𝓁𝓁 𝓉𝒶𝓀𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝑒 𝒶𝓌𝒶𝓎…
𝒾𝓃𝓉𝑜 𝒶 𝓁𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝑜𝒻 𝑒𝓃𝒸𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓉𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉…

haha ^^

To all the curious ladies and gents out here, you may call me Imp.
Short, sweet and straight to the point. ;)

I am a lady in her twenties, with a strong penchant for roleplaying, writing, and drawing. The Holy Trinity if you will. I am a huge nerd and aesthetic lover boy - plain and simple. One of my main passions being video-games, illustrations, comics, live-action films, series and anime/cartoon shows, elements that shaped me during my years of growing up.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted my first ever ad on any website, and I was very much positively surprised by the amazing people that have reached out to me.
And since I am a greedy little mf, I wanted to fish for more partners. I’ve been roleplaying for a few years now and gradually gathered a good amount of experience throughout the years, but it’s always fun to meet and learn something new.

Name: Imp

Age: 27 years

Experience: 11 years

Preferences: 1:1 Roleplaying

Partner: Should be at least [18+], but I rather much prefer my counterpart to be 21 years or older

I am a very creative sort of individual with hundreds of ideas constantly occupying my little impish head. And I am very spontaneous too, so I can always adjust to a new setting, depending on how good and compelling the concept is.

Inspirations come from various sources and origins, be it a fandom (an already existing universe) or an original storyline. Please read through these paragraphs carefully before you decide to contact me! It’s important to avoid any misunderstanding later! And I would less likely respond to a message with the title ‘Hey, wanna rp?’, since I hadn’t had any good experiences with these said messages.  Thank you.

Communication: It’s certainly chill. You can talk to me about whatever occupies your mind since I am very open and always happy to listen to others. I also tend to be chatty, sharing a meme or a joke every now and to loosen up the mood. If you consider choosing me as your roleplaying partner, be sure to maintain a certain consistency. I have nothing against going on a longer break or even a hiatus, but the whole `ghosting stick´ is something I have no patience for. So if you’re unsure of upholding a stable, long term partnership, feel free to skim past this ad.

Plotting: Also very important to note! I am fairly quick when it comes to building new characters, concepts, premises, storylines, backstories, etc… This means there is certain flexibility available which allows me to adjust. Even though it is a hobby, I am still extremely passionate about good storytelling and interesting character arcs. I hope to meet someone who is just as enthusiastic and willing to put in the same amount of effort as I am. If it’s only me who’s pulling all the weight, I will lose interest fast, just to get it out there. Aside from that, I love going a little crazy with the possibilities and push things to their absolute limits. Of course within the boundaries of the given setting.

Pairing & Romance: Okay, right off the bat, I am a hopeless romantic through and through. I enjoy good and strong chemistry between characters just as much as the next, and this will be no exception. I prefer the good ol’ MxF pairing because I have more experience with this. But I also like playing a FxF dynamic or MxM. Everyone is welcome! When it comes to pairing itself, I want to make sure our creations are compatible, for I hate forcing characters into a romantic relationship for the sake of progression. A natural flow is what I am aiming for. ;)

Mature? Yes, very much so:  Adult and taboo topics are absolute. There’s no way around it because, in my stories, it is a running theme. The adult world is not easy to handle, but it’s definitely interesting to explore. That includes violence, cursing, shocking content, and all that dark stuff. My limits are few, safe for a couple of minor pet peeves that I have, I am pretty much open to some experimentation. When it comes to action-heavy scenes (be it an intimate situation between two characters or something on a cataclysmic scale), I won’t fade to black since I am not a huge fan of censoring. However, I will not force or push my partner into something they are not comfortable with. If you want to know the extent to how far I am willing to go, what sort of content or how detailed my writing will be, you can ask me directly. As for smut or lemons, whatever you call it, it will never be the focus of any of my roleplays, but I enjoy a good erotic scene with a lot of tension (if they are good).

Boundaries: Not a big fan of things like pedophilia, necrophilia, scat, bestiality, or those dreaded ‘futas’.

Inspirations and interests: There’s a pretty broad spectrum of what I deem interesting and inspirational. From fallen angels and demon/monster hunters, mages, criminal masterminds, cybernetically enhanced characters to futuristic dystopian settings, ancient kingdoms who have fallen against the test of time. All of it causes my heart to skip a beat. For original content, I’ll just give a brief list of bullet points of the general themes that fall in line with my current interests.

Writing: My texts are lengthy, detailed, and elaborate. Third-person is usually my preferred way of playing my character unless there’s a special case where an exception can be made. Word count usually fluctuates, though I have a standard form of 400-500+ words per response. It also highly depends on the given situation. I don’t want to set anything in stone… just to give you a basic idea of what you’re in for. I also expect my partner to have an at least adequate, if not decent grasp on basic grammar and punctuation.

Doubling: Yes, absolutely! If you are prone to doubling, chances are I might accept you as my partner straight away! Although I have nothing against the simple form of roleplaying, doubling is something I’ve done since my first time joining.

Characters: Very character-driven with the main focus being on interaction. I take my time writing characters and love nothing more than well-structured sheets that illustrate the vision of their creator. (But!) There’s no need to write 10-20 pages worth of character information, but I wouldn’t want to limit you either. As for the depiction of the given character, I won’t be as presumptuous as to tell you what sort of medium you can and cannot use. Face claims such as photos of real models, illustrations, 3D models, drawings or descriptions are all okay. As long as it gets its point across, I am happy.

Aversions: A few minor things that irritate me, or let’s say, aren’t really my style are one-liners, low effort responses and out of character behaviors in canon characters. We all have different takes on characters, which is totally fine by me since I basically do the same. Though if the character acts and behaves unlike their personality dictates, it will break the immersion. I hope to stay true to my own words when saying this. If it happens on my side, just let me know! Another pet peeve of mine is that one plot that has been done time and time again…. and I’ve grown quite jaded towards it, which is ‘supernaturals trying to fit into human society’ thing… I mean, I’m not opposed to borrowing from this idea, but for me, it grew old pretty fast. Speaking from experience.

Passione: My wish is to find a partner whom I can have a good time with and develop some chemistry. After all it is a fun hobby. We both should have fun with what we’re writing. Brainstorming among other things is one of my favorite things to do. To see how things unfold and how the characters react to the given situation is the highlight of any story.

FANDOM:

I love roleplaying fandoms just as much as I have a blast with building something original universes. Worldbuilding is my preferred cup of tea… but if we opt for something more fandom inspired, I highly welcome in on expanding on the given universe and add some original lore too!
Hellsing: Haven’t done that one before and I am curious as to how things play out, especially in such a dark and mystifying universe like Hellsing. There’s a lot of subject matter that we can delve into, plus I am a big fan of powerful vampire characters!
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: I would love you for this. No, seriously, I would. This fandom has sucked me into a downward spiral and there’s no possible chance of escaping this inescapable void. The absolute insanity of this franchise had me hooked from the second I laid eyes on it and I would be forever ecstatic if you’d message me on behalf of roleplaying Jojo. I have plenty of ideas for this one, just you wait.
Full Metal Alchemist: One of my favorite mangas and animes ever made. Recently I’ve begun rewatching FMA Brotherhood and felt a small hint of nostalgia swelling inside my blackened heart. I’d be open to play it, though it is not one of my top cravings at the moment.
Justice League / Young Justice / Justice League Dark: Huge DC fan, though I much prefer the animations and comics over the live-action cinematic. Let’s just say, I like the expansive and dynamic set of possibilities and deep, well-written cast. For instance Hellblazer Constantine or Raven.
Bayonetta: Need I say more? Let’s dance boys!
APH Hetalia: That includes the 2P version ;)
The Boys: Well.. the 2nd season came out. And I am simply stoked.

ORIGINAL:

Supernatural: From angels to demons, from gods to monsters, I’ve seen it all and I absolutely love it. There can be any sort of creature or being involved, ranging from vampires to sirens to elves, you have it. However, I’ve never done something quite relating to angelic beings and their offspring before. I’ve read up on Nephilim and angels and found it rather fascinating, and it’s a different approach from the usual vampire vs werewolf cliche.

Crime and intrigue: I never stray too far from the supernatural path, but hell, there’s nothing better than some good old gritty mafia inspired stories with a complex cast of characters and a solid storyline.
Sci-fi and urban fantasy: So this could be basically anything from genetically engineered superhuman (superheroes / - villains) with a dark take on the human psyche, dismantling the idea of heroism and villainy. Or a world where mankind began their interstellar journey to colonize neighboring planets, galaxies before transcending their own humanity by merging themselves with deadly technology. I have a few plans for this…
Historical and mysterious setting: So one of my favorite eras is the Victorian time period, 30s - 40s - 80s, Renaissance or Ancient times during the rise of the Egyptian / Roman / Sumerian Empire. During these times, a dark discovery was made by man, learning that they were not alone in this world. In fact, they weren’t even the supreme race that destined themselves to dominate the world, for another race of humanoids have lied dormant deep beneath the earth, slumbering through the millennia only to be re-awakened by a cataclysmic event. These ancient humanoids are gods among men, superior in every way imaginable, and they have made it their mission to reclaim their right to rule. But their nature is not what most people think it is…
The idea: I have an idea for a plot, in which I can give you if you ask for it. It is however merely a suggestion for what we could write - not a mandatory thing. If you don’t like the idea, we can always figure stuff out and keep on home-brewing till we find something we both can enjoy. There’s no need to immediately end things if the first thing doesn’t really fire you up.

If you’re still here and haven’t fallen asleep reading through my loooong paragraphs, then I would like to thank you for bearing with me this far. I am looking forward to your messages.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi, do you have any recs for someone who doesn’t know how to get into like the bat fam comics wise but still wants to read fic? Would the Wikipedia pages work? Thanks !
Hi friend!!! I absolutely do! (These are only fics that I’ve personally found and read, of course, but they’re great and I think you’ll like them!)
I really, really recommend starting with @audreycritter’s Cor Et Cerebrum series. It’s unparalleled. I actually started reading them with Developmental Milestones, the one centered around Audrey’s OC, Dr. Devabhaktuni, and that’s how I initially fell in love with him and the Batfam as a whole. There is a LOT of content here for you to sink into and wrap yourself in like a blanket burrito, and then Audrey has even MORE that’s also excellent that isn’t in this particular series. So good.
one shot, two shots in the night by discowing is an amazing story wherein Bruce gets it in his head to write a (heavily edited) autobiography, and there’s a LOT of introspection and reflection on family and his kids and everyone’s relationships. It’s absolutely beautiful, and a delight, and funny. also 10/10 Holy Musical, Batman reference in the title haha
The Ol’ Switcheroo by @autumnhobbit, aside from having a delightful name, is a GLORIOUS look at the dynamic between Tim and Damian, after Damian takes a bullet meant for Tim at a public event. Great portrayal of every single family member, honestly, and all their various sibling and parent-child dynamics. Bonding and angst and comfort and just lovely.
The Problem With Galas series, by MashpotatoeQueen5. These are all GREAT fics. They’re unique and well thought out premises, all taking place at galas various Waynes are at. The characters are beautifully analyzed and taken apart with great characterization while ALSO including backstory mentions that are helpful if you’re a newer reader. Even if you don’t know most of the characters or backstory plot points, you can pick some up from reading this, and at the very least you get a great feel for what their personalities are and what makes them tick, you know?
Juneberries, by @mishatheberry. Kidnapping! Sibling bonding! Found family revelations! Dramatic escapes and injuries etc. etc. and lots of comfort and feelings at the end! Very worthwhile read. Main dynamic focused on here is Tim and Damian, and how they get closer and really bond as ride-or-die brothers. Whole family is portrayed fantastically, though, and the plot is *kisses fingers like italian chef meme*
Bet Your Bottom Dollar, by @jerseydevious. Listen. Listen. Please heed the warnings on this one, but oh geez. This is SUCH a good look at Dick and Bruce’s characters, and how they deal with trauma, and such a good portrayal of the aftereffects of trauma (at least. one way of experiencing the aftereffects, anyway), and it’s so raw and good and beautiful and UGH so good. Great father-son dynamic, and a great portrayal of Dick having not just happy feelings. He feels things strongly, and that means everything, and he can’t just always be okay even if he looks like it on the outside.
Liminal Space by Calamityjim. This is Tim-centric and it’s an AU but it’s within just another DC universe basically and holy MOLY. HOLY MOLY. Listen Tim is very messed up at the beginning of this and Good Bruce is like I’m gonna help this kid if it kills me, and it’s a FANTASTIC portrayal of the personalities of every one of Bruce’s boys and who Bruce is as a person. SUCH good characterization. And all the side characters are amazing too! The plot is fantastic! Found family like whoa! It’s JUST REALLY NEAT OKAY a true delight
The wikis are absolutely very helpful for anything you’re confused about or if you feel like you’re missing some information. Treat the Batfam content a lot like a choose-your-own-adventure game and you’ll have plenty of fun!
I hope you have fun reading!!!
