Prowler Pavitr <3<3

Here's Pavitr's design in my Prowler Pavitr au akjdskjdskjkskdsk! It's my au where Pavitr is a fallen hero who used to be Spider-Man and becomes the Prowler, fueled by rage against a world and a system that forced him to pretend at perfection and then only hurt him and the people he loves.

I love him so much,, I have so much stuff in progress about him rn (working on the fics too). Gonna have chaipunk front and center, and like four separate plot arcs, I'm so insane about this au actually -

Anyway here's some infodump about his design inspirations and symbolism I put in it, I loveeeee talking abt him:

Hair -

Okay so this is after some time, like a couple months since Pav became the Prowler, and he's grown his hair out a bit now. It's kind of a mix of rejection of the "masculine" standard of short cropped hair by flaunting his longer curls that he's always been proud of and even had to grow to love He also dyes his hair purple! Bc he didn't wanna cut his hair but he wanted to do something to set himself apart from his old identity and also he's literally an impulsive 17-18 year old and wanted to do something that felt like owning his own self and asserting autonomy over his body etc etc

Something Borrowed -

The tie that he's using to tie back his hair is his original blue headband!! It doesn't go with his outfit at all but It's the original blue headband that Maya Aunty got for him all those years ago that he's been wearing forever and it snapped and broke in the battle that preceded what happened to her, and he still keeps it and ties his hair back with it instead The nosering (nath) used to be Gayatri's, they used to try out her jewelry on him and he loved that one so much she gifted it to him, and since he's basically left his old life and gone no contact with her it's all he has left of Gaya too

Main Outfit -

His jacket is loosely based on Krrish's leather jacket from the Bollywood movie series that's about a superhero named Krrish. I just think it has the dramatique and vibe Pav would like He binds his chest bc he still hadn't had top surgery but he's way more open about it, with the binding showing through the neck of the jacket now where he would have never dared to hint at it before,,, another thing about how he doesn't care about people's opinions and perceptions and standards anymore, he wants to say fuck you as much to everything in the system as he can and also piss people off while he's at it and a trans antihero/villain is a surefire way to do that. His dhoti is basically a dhoti pant, modified a bit bc i liked it

He has payals on his feet that make a faint chhan chhan noise when he approaches which has creepiness and cuteness potential imo I basically turned the prowler logo into his dhoti belt buckle askjdsjk

It's also slightly modified to mimic a trishul or even a diya shape, up for interpretation either way, bc trishuls are a symbol of Shiva, god of destruction, and diyas are a symbol of light in the darkness and the need to find it Also the chain around the dhoti at his hips is both a reference to decorative dhoti chain accessories and the lil things on it are his modified grenades that he uses for arson, bc Prowler Pav is big on arson and murder ajajsjsj

Prowler Claws -

His bangles/claws were hands down my favourite part to design!!

So his claws are of course his original spiderman bangles modified into the prowler claws But i based them on three weapons, each of which means something interesting for Pavitr

The first is bagh nakh. Literally translates to "tiger claws", famously used in a legend of Shivaji Maharaj They usually curl into the palm instead of going between the fingers like they do for Pav, but they're basically metal claws wound secretly around your hand for a sneak attack It's associated with bravery and righteous rage bc of Shivaji Maharaj but it's also really associated with stealth and an attack from unexpected quarters, being stabbed from a side no one saw coming. Which. Pavitr. The perfect hero, becoming the Prowler. Come on

Second is the trishul, aka trident That's the reason there are three prongs to his claw Trishul is the symbol of the god Shiva, and as i mentioned he's the god of destruction, as in he's part of the main triumvirate of gods who focus on creation preservation and destruction He also is really really associated with rage, especially destructive rage; he has a whole dance called the tandava for his rage which is a Huge Deal I can't stress this enough And because Prowler Pav is a being fuelled by rage against a system that has hurt so many including him that he wants to destroy and see burned, it is perfect for him The trishul is also seen as a symbol of goddess Kali, who's similar in the destruction goddess aspect and also is literally an embodiment of rage and violence that cannot be controlled which is more the theme I started out with, but whichever you notice first, it works either way. There's a whole myth in fact where Shiva had to lie beneath her feet to stop her destructive rampage before it ended the world.

And lastly, the urumi, aka the whip sword from Kerala Basically each of Prowler Pav's claws extend into whip swords when he does the swing/slash/whip motion This is really interesting at least to me, bc it means 2 things: 1) Pav still remembers and is actively using some of his skillset from swinging around as Spiderman. He does use the urumis to curl around distant objects and swing too, and they are very lethal weapons when used right, and that use requires a lot of skill, huge parts of which he built up by his experience 2) This is a weapon which requires an unimaginable amount of control, precision and strength And Pav is doing all that So all of his actions, every movement, is very deliberate and thought out. He's not doing any of this - turning away from heroism, becoming the Prowler, using these lethal weapons - on a whim. They are all very very deliberate.

Also one more thing - the blades of his claws are all retractable ofc But they are not protected or anything They slice up his palms and the in-betweens of his fingers whenever he uses them,, especially when he uses them as urumis And it would be so easy to fix the design or make gloves or smth so they don't do that But he doesn't ever do it He could make it so his hands don't bleed on using his claws But he doesn't want to

He is an angsty boyo...

Mask -

The eyes are ofc like the prowler mask design except I made them more curved and curled at the end bc that's a kind of shape often seen in traditional art of the headdress of Kali, goddess of uncontrollable violence as I've said before Then the part between them is meant to be based off a third eye, which is something both Shiva and Kali have. It opens at the height of their rage, it's meant to symbolise destructive fury for them both Although it's also used in an all seeing context otherwise but a lot of whitewashed bullshit is also there that dilutes sources to find connotations His theyyam-based tusks from his Spider-Man mask, I wanted to keep

The shape below the eyes is based off the noses in masks in various regional Indian tribal and traditional masks,,, a lot of them tend to have a very distinctive curly nose shape that I wanted to keep, a lot of these masks also depict rage or are intimidating and are very emotive And then ofc you have the bottom of the mask, I made the curved-ish cut based on the peacock-feather-y shape i was using but it's also based on the general shape of Kali's lips in traditional art where she has her tongue out, it's a big symbol of her rage and rampage I tried to put the tongue too but it looked awkward and honestly i thought it would be cooler to jsut leave the bottom half of the mask open and you can see Pav's mouth and his expressions through it a bit instead, in the spirit of that And also it's based a little bit off Krrish's mask, you can never escape the Krrish design Also there's the lil teeth. Those are often used in art for demons and animals,, and Prowler Pav is very cat coded in his behaviour in general tbh. He's like if an orange cat's fur got burned to black.

When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played?

I started playing mid 2017, I think. I played the flagship books (TF, TCaTF, MW), and def preferred TF at the time.

When and why did you join Choices fandom?

I joined the Tumblr fandom in 2017, around the time of the TRR finale. Mostly because the Liam hate at the time was intense and I wanted to write metas about why Liam was, in fact, not “a dick who betrayed the MC” 😂

I did have a Tumblr account before that (made it in 2015 to follow Bollywood film posts), but never actually used it.

How did you pick your blog name?

I was lazy af so it was my middle name plus my birth year haha

Pull up the first post in your archive, and tell us about it!

I started out with a couple reblogs, but my first actual post was about the romance points mechanism in TRR1. There was a point in the middle of the book where one nice word to Drake would give you an automatic romance point, and I was like, “Huh??? Either treat him like shit or risk him catching feels for me? Is that how it is???”. Thankfully, that stopped after two chapters. After that, I did an essay series analyzing Liam’s actions in the finale called “The Crown, The King and The Flame.” Romance Points Post The Crown and the Flame

How long have you been writing fanfiction?

Almost 6 years now! I started doing Liam fics around the beginning of TRR2.

What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to write about?

I’m the most invested in TRR and PM, but between the two I’d probably say PM is my fave book overall. But yeah, my favourite book to write about would be TRR, because Liam, Hana and Kiara are such fantastic characters to write about! (Hayden and Sloane, too, but I’m still in the process of getting comfortable writing them).

Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were writing it today?

It was Keychains, my two part fic series featuring my MC and Liam. It was set around the time the MC was waiting in the airport in TRR2, just before Maxwell and Bertrand intervene. It had a follow up with Liam’s PoV too.

I really like it. It included some really good hc’s I made at the time, like Esther buying an apple keychain to represent Cordonia at the same time, and Liam calling her his wife in Greek and Esther not realizing what the phrase meant. I thought the pathos and slight humour was quite well-done. I can’t think of much I would want to change in the story.

What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

As a series – Eleanor’s Kitchen! It’s ongoing, and it’s a joy to write. I love exploring food from a cultural lens, and since Cordonia was a fictional country, I could explore a variety of ethnicities and food cultures. Liam had a literal diamond scene that explored gastrodiplomacy, and I wanted to explore his childhood and Eleanor’s friendships too.

Individually – I would say my Kiara fic “An Ear to the Ground”. Kiara is a delightful character and exploring the social season through her eyes was a real journey! I also love “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” which explores the early days of the Sloane & Hayden friendship. I used asterisms and constellations to symbolize moments in their friendship.

Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be but found could use a little more love?

Cordonian Waltz was definitely a surprise in terms of reception!! It was written in the style of headcanons I was seeing at the time, and I wrote it in second person. It became my most widely-read fanfic very fast, and every once in a while it would experience a major surge in readership. I enjoyed writing it and thought it was a lovely, romantic piece, but I really wasn’t expecting it to finally have 250+ reblogs out of it, and people coming and telling me this was the fic that got them into Liam x MC in the first place. I find that deeply gratifying 😍

There’s a lot of fics that I feel need more engagement and appreciation, but I can understand that those characters also don’t exactly get much of an audience. My entire PM set comes under this category; they typically get low readership. I think my Hana and Kiara fics too could do with more of an audience.

@twinkleallnight once told me that when she reads my stuff, she usually takes a long time just to ruminate on the story, and I like to believe that often, that’s why the engagement isn’t always immediate. Which I like too!! I like that some of my stuff can make people stop and think, and I like to believe that over time, the work will have its own impact.

If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

Probably fluff but with a lot of observation and sometimes somber reflections. I’m not that great with angst…and I’ve never actually tried smut? But maybe one day 😄

Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?

Yes! Some of my MCs are v different from me but I always incorporate something from my life experiences in them. Like Esther taking photos of the sunset or Basil not being science oriented but still having an interest in space.

Character wise I find I put a lot of myself into a lot of the characters I write. Notably, Liam, Hana, Kiara, certain Haydens and Sloane. Liam’s love for learning, different aspects of Hana and Kiara’s experiences as queer women, Sloane’s experiences as a neurodivergent woman, and especially my Scholar!Hayden’s (Iris) observations. I tend to incorporate a lot of my feelings and experiences more into certain canonical characters than in MCs.

What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Dialogue, I think. Especially when it’s a character I don’t relate to that much. But also sometimes when it’s a character I love but am only starting to write because then I really overthink it!

Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

Hmm…probably neglected wouldn’t be the word I’d use…I just take a very long time to kickstart them 😂

But yeah, definitely my Petals and Thornes series? That’s the fic series I’m doing for Hana x Kiara, that is supposed to explore TRR2 and 3 from their PoV (with significant changes). So far I’ve only been able to do some one-shots and hcs in that universe, but I do want to start the actual series soon!

I have some essay series’ I’d love to work on too! My Hana essay series which has two essays left, The Hayden Young Project, and a possible series on the alternative Lis of TRR!

Petals and Thornes Hana Lee: A Study in Erasure

If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

Hmm. A few people have asked me, actually, and while I’m not fully opposed to showing them I’ll probably take some time before I do show my work. I’ll probably overthink how much will be understandable to a reader who doesn’t have the context of the source, and what they may not understand.

What to show them first? I’m not sure! Maybe the smaller ones first, like Cordonian Waltz. Or my RCD fic Snowstorms, because it doesn’t have more than 2-3 canon characters featuring and I do talk a little about being a closeted queer teen figuring out their sexuality through cinema, which is an overall relatable experience to some! Snowstorms

Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?

In my early years I used to emulate Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s style. Much of her work that I read as a teen was pretty flowery, sometimes bordering on purple prose, and I really loved that style and tried to go that way. But now I think a variety of writers from different genres inform my writing. In terms of published authors, Jhumpa Lahiri, Helen Hoang, and non-fiction ones like Rukmini Pande, Ruby Hammad and Mikki Kendall.

In Choices fic, @callmetippytumbles for sure – a lot of the questions she was tackling with her MC in her Home series served as inspiration for some of the ideas I’ve been having in mind for Petals and Thornes. @thefirstcourtesan is a great writing buddy to have, too, and she has a knack for saying a lot in very few words! There’s also my amazing group of friends (shoutout to @cassiopeiacorvus, @thecapturedafrique, @mand-delemonde, and @beyonceswigs, as well as @twinkleallnight , @dcbbw @mariemarieohcontrary , @choicesfrog, @grapecaseschoices and @ohsnapitzlovehacker…the discussions are so good and leave some much to think about afterward 💖💖). All these discussions ALWAYS fuel my ideas and make me think out of the box.

I’ve also recently started writing polyamorous characters and relationships, and @angelasscribbles stories and resources have been such a great help in navigating that!

Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?

Haha! I’ve not even started the proper series yet but I think Petals and Thornes? But besides that maybe Eleanor’s Kitchen may work as a series idk 😄

Do you write original fiction?

I do try! I’ve done a few short stories but before I started fanfic, I did a lot of spoken word poetry and that was fun.

What other hobbies do you have?

Reading, watching video essays, spending months on hyperfixations 😂 and a little cooking. My kid’s gotten into craft recently and has succeeded in taking me down that rabbit hole too haha.

I used to be into making fruit wines but have gotten inconsistent with that over the years.

What’s your favorite emoji?

Because I have a huuuge thing for nerds – this one: 🤓

BONUS – tell us anything you’d like (if you want to).

A story my mum often tells about how I got into writing, began with some good old-fashioned sibling rivalry. Apparently as a child I was notorious for writing things on the walls of our house. One day my older brother got a hardbound royal-blue covered notebook to write in, with gold lettering on the cover…and I got instantly jealous that I didn’t get one (I was 6 or 7 and already fond of telling stories). When I complained my mum made me a deal – she would get me the same notebook…IF I stopped writing on the walls and began writing in that instead 😂 It worked. My mother is a smart woman.

I love spoilers!! I will read the end of a novel I’m reading and then go back and read the rest. Sometimes I even read books all the way backwards lol.

I love romance, and my favorite tropes include second-chance romance and mutual pining while believing the other person will never love you back! Because, at heart, I’m a dramatic bitch.

Hello!!! Sorry for taking so long to answer, I needed to get into the right headspace lol

You know how it's a desi custom to like feed each other cake on birthdays? You do it with your loved ones especially so I'm imagining it's Jon's birthday and Tim insists on feeding him cake and he begrudgingly agrees then suddenly everyones feeding him cake and laughing and feeding everyone else and Martin really shouldn't feel like it's so intimate (indirect kisses as such) but it's a bonding moment for the whole archives crew

Jon is like insanely good at rangoli patterns, his grandma put him to work every festival season and it kept his hands busy for hours on end, building spiral patterns with vibrant powders. He lost some of it over the years, but in the Scottish Safehouse, he makes smaller patterns across the entrance almost as a sigil against everything they were being hunted by

Martin has a pretty good Bengali accent and is fluent, his mum refused to speak anything other than Bangla so he's kept it up all these years and gotten quite good at it to the point where he's sometimes mistaken for a native speaker

Jon has an atrocious accent and can just about get by in Hindi, he had been sat down by his grandma to try and teach him a couple of times over his childhood but he never could concentrate for long enough, his grandma shouted too much for his liking and he was a gifted kid so if he didn't get it immediately, he wouldn't do it at all

Jon's favourite Bollywood actor is Irrfan Khan cause he thinks he's super impactful and he loved him in Piku (but he grew up watching mostly old black and white Bangla movies directed by satyajit Roy like Pather Panchali)

Martin's favourite has to be SRK cause he's a classic and he grew up watching him and whenever he's sad he watches Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or Chennai Express

They both adore 3 Idiots though, like they were both screwed over by the education system in different ways (Martin struggled with juggling school and caring for his mum so he ended up dropping out, Jon and his burned out gifted kid vibes), they understand the pressure to get a certain level of educated and a certain type of profession (they would've gotten it from judgemental relatives lol like you couldve used your intelligence to become an engineer and instead you work for a falthu place) and they definitely understand the mental health issues and the friendship between the guys reminds them of their own friendships over the years

Also that song "give me some sunshine, give me some rain" like one day Martin's humming it and Jon's like is that???? and then Martin starts singing it and they do a little duet (martin was classically trained in rabindra Sangeet so he has a smooth velvety voice and jons is decent) and then it can become a super angsty call back in MAG 200

8. Jane and Paul Look, I know what people will say, and in the interest of fairness I should say that they had moments of brilliance during 1967, but listen: Jane and Paul were undeniably very good-looking people who often stood next to each other, but that's not the same as being well-dressed.

I think a big part of it is that Jane, who I love, was not much of a fashion girlie -- see that picture of Jane and Paul during her twenty-first where she is literally wearing A Tanktop. Or just look at this picture.

Really what more is there to say. I rest my case.

7. George and Olivia I don't want to put them this far down because it's George, but the competition is pretty stiff. Two moments where I think they went off:

6. Paul and Linda

It's harder to rank Paul and Linda because they were together for so long. They had their Blues Clues hosts moments in the seventies, their sitcom Mom and Dad eighties, their elder lesbians nineties etc. I feel a little bad for ranking Paul so low, but he did say that part of their relationship was that Linda gave him permission to dress lazily, so really it would go against the spirit of Paul and Linda to rank them highly.

5. Barbara and Ringo

Their nineties Bollywood couple slay. Not explaining further. Some list positions you decide with your pussy.

4. John and Cyn I've discussed this earlier, but I have the hardest time separating 'looks good' and 'well dressed' for them. This is one of my favourite pictures of them.

It's got literally nothing to do with how they're dressed. But with that aside, they've done a lot in service of fashion over the years. A sample:

So I thought, What if Kanthony had a Bollywood Playlist?

Yeah, not many brown girls show up in a steamy Regency storyline and this must be venerated with a bollywood playlist (other than the haldi time string quatret version of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham) I have given links on the title of the songs to enjoy

1. Ajab Si ( From the Film “Om Shanti Om” )

The title of the song means “something strange”. It speaks about the strange beauty in the beloved’s eye. The scene of the song depicts the hero smitten with the eyes of the heroine, and has a fateful encounter with her when she is publically walking into a glamourous red carpet. Although the first encounter of Kate and Anthony was not in public but in private, but I do have a feeling that the first time Anthony saw her, he felt drawn. The song also speaks about being dumbstruck by the air of the beloved and her beauty and Anthony was surely dumbstruck by Kate’s scathing comment: “your character is as deficient as your horsemanship,”

2. Dilbar Mere (From Satte pe Satta)

A classic Golden Era number inspired from the tunes of Donauwellen Walzer (aa tune which inspired quite a number of Bollywood songs in the golden era) I think this song fits perfectly for Anthony when he tries to win both the sisters over, especially Kate by hook nook and crook so that he could marry the season’s diamond, Edwina. The song is like a challenge thrown to the beloved. “My darling” the song means “how much will you torment me? I shall light a fire to your heart that you’ll have not choice but to melt”. It reminds of of Anthony reminding Kate “by the end of your stay, I can assure you, your opinion of me would much improve”

3. Dil Yeh Ladaku (From Saala Khadoos)

The number is quite different. The scene depicts how the student falls in love with the teacher she so desperately hates. In the second and third episode we saw a delicious bit of rivalry between the two headstrong and very independent character. The lyrics says “my heart which is a fighter now fights with itself today” The song is filled with cuteness and confusion of falling in love with someone whom you seem to despise. (not to mention the title of the movie means : Bloody Scrooge)

4. Lahu Muhn Lag Gaya (from Raam Leela)

This is a steamy number from a film which was loosely based on Romeo and Juliet: two people from enemy gangs falling in love. The scene of the song depicts a scene from Holi, where the heroine completely captures the hero’s heart after she kisses him in stealth. This act befuddles the Hero and after a few awkward moments, he shares a few flirtatious moments. The title means “I have tasted the blood, which had slept in my veins, the vigor has awakened.” I particularly love this number for the Viscount and Kate’s “bee scene” and Anthony’s befuddlement after Kate unwittingly flashes her thigh during the hunt

5. Ajeeb Dastan Hy Yeh (from Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi)

Another golden era number for our favourite couple. The song is quite poetic that portrays “the one that got away” feel before Katy Perri made it famous. Even the movie title means “my heart my own and my beloved is of someone else’s”. I think it captures the perfect feeling both Kate and Anthony faces after Anthony’s engagement with Edwina. Anthony practically gets mad when he hears for the first time Kate saying “I am returning to India” and Kate practically breaks her heart when Anthony proposes Edwina

6. Shiqayat (from Gangubai Kathiawari)

The title that means “complaint” starts with the lines “it takes great heart to spend your evenings with only the memories of your beloved; it takes great heart to kill yourself everyday” then it proceeds “I have heard he has great complaints about me, it could only mean he has great love for me”. The context of the song is really painful: the heroine marries her beloved off to another girl because of greater motive and she comes to attend the wedding: drunk and sad and avoids looking at her beloved, who is now newly wed. The context is self explanatory: both Kate and Anthony’s denial of love : “it will be bearable and it will pass and it will feel as if we never felt it before.” ouch

7. Tu Janey Na (From Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani)

The scenario is the hero is helping the girl he loves to run away with the guy the heroine loves. He is practically arranging the marriage alter for the girl. The song starts with “How to tell you why I want you, Darling I can’t; what my heart wishes to say my eyes tell to you, but you don’t know”. I really really imagine Anthony would be thinking something like this when he stands in the alter and Kate walks down the aisle as Edwina’s Bridesmaid. The song also says “we didn’t meet even if you and I met each other, there is a thousand mile chasm between us” this feeling must be solidifying as Anthony saw every moment pass to his wedding.

8. O Meri Jaan (From Life in a Metro)

It is a long struggle of social standing, situation and then the grand realisation of love for one another... despite all the circumstances. The song is about warmth of love and following the selfish desire for the beloved, I think, when Anthony cries and tries to propose, this song would be perfect, the climax of the song says “my heart does not understand any other relation, I don’t know what has happened to it, my arms seeks you madly and only you... where are you oh my life my love”

Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in Outlander, has opened up about possibly turning his hand to Bollywood. Are you sure the character's form will have a special bond?😏

SH will learn to sing and dance to perform with PeeCee (preciouspriyanka) in a Hindi film. Although Indian actors have lip-syncing singers for that. Dancing is not Sam's best skill. I don't think PeeCee has seen SH dance before.

With his feet flat, he struggles to get a bit of a rhythm 😂 but Pee Cee could carry out a Hindi movie with her husband Nick Jonas, he was a supporting actor in Love Again, and they would convince better as a couple.

Are you sure you want to make a Bollywood film in Hindi to act or to sell your booze 🥃 at the end, whisky has been the favourite spirit of India. Whisky salesman’s role would be most successful🤫

I knew something would go through SH's mind the moment Richard Madden landed in India to promote 'Citadel' with Priyanka Chopra. Sam copied Richard's style in his promo. Richard was asked if he would be interested in doing a Bollywood film, expressing his interest; it would be interesting to see him show off his skills on the big screen in India, after all, Bollywood makes more films than Hollywood.

However, SH's situation is quite different. The ulterior motive of Priyanka's friendship is based on interest. India is the largest consumer of Scotch whisky🥃 in the world. They use one another and have become friends. SH’s friendship relationships are based on interest or profit. The popular adage says…” There ain't no such thing as a free lunch".

I can’t imagine Priyanka promoting Sam's Whisky 🥃 in India. She has to take care of her husband's involvement (Villa One Tequila), But Sam thinks being associated with her name helps. On the other hand, SONA became SH's favourite restaurant in New York. Why? Because He likes to drink Indian spicy margaritas? 😜

You Make Me Strong (part 2)

Summary - After coming back home from a really long mission and breaking down in your arms, all Steve wants to do is fall asleep in your arms. But after being woke up by a nightmare, a realisation dawns on him.

Pairing - Steve Rogers x desi!wife!reader

Word Count - 985

Warnings - rescue mission gone wrong, explosives/explosions, hindi words with english translations in brackets, 1 or 2 swear words, steve speaking hindi, small dancing scene

A/N - this was inspired by One Direction's ‘Strong’ and in my opinion one of the BEST romantic bollywood songs “Mast Magan”

also the summary is shit, the 'realisation' bit is actually pretty short.

Part 1

Steve had come back home from a very long mission. He was covered in dirt but neither of you cared when all you wanted was to feel each other’s embrace. It was late at night when he returned. After all the initial hugs, kisses and tears, he went to freshen up while you put the things from his back away.

You warmed up his favourite aloo parathas. “इश्क़ की धुनि…” (the flame of love) you sang under your breath, a bollywood song stuck in your head. Swaying back and forth you got more into the lyrics, the yellow light setting the right atmosphere, it somehow raining outside at the perfect time. Just as you closed your eyes and twirled around, your husband caught you, spinning you once more before slow dancing with you.

“मांगे है तेरी मंजूरी..” (have sought your permission) he sang where you stopped. It always warms your heart whenever Steve would learn the songs you love just to sing them to you. Especially the hindi songs, since those took effort to both learn and pronounce correctly. The beeping microwave made you break apart, but not before he kissed the back of your hand, then letting you go. Always the gentleman.

Telling him to sit down at the table, you bring out the food and let him eat. Assuming by how quickly he finished his meal, he was hungry. “Now that beat the shitty sandwichs they gave us to eat,” he said while finishing up. Before he could get up you take his plate to the sink and wash it. Steve doesn’t say anything. Instead he just watches you with only love in his eyes.

Later you both were getting ready for bed. He had already brushed his teeth while you were in the bathroom doing the very thing. He could hear your paayals making a little noise as you went shuffling around the bathroom.

He noticed his favourite hoodie sitting on the sofa-chair in the room, as if laid out to be worn. It got Steve thinking. She knew that he was coming home today, did she leave it out for him to wear? Or was it being aired out since she probably wore it during his absence? Either way, it made him smile for no visible reason.

You made your way to the bed while switching the hallway light off outside the room. Once you pulled back the covers and got yourself situated in the bed Steve immediately held your waist and smoothly pulled you closer to him.

“How are you feeling राजा?” you asked him, softly. He replied in the same low, breathy tone, “a couple of things, but mostly tired right now.” You could see the red in his eyes and how he was fighting sleep just as much as you. “How ‘bout we go to sleep and tomorrow we can stay in bed all day, that sound good?” he asked, freckling kisses all over your face. He got a soft hum in response from you.

He turns to switch the bedroom light off and pulls you closer to him while slowly drifting off to sleep.

“You both head in from the east, we both will enter from the west. Team Alpha will free the hostages and get them to the aircraft. Team Beta is on takeout duty. You see any figure from the opposing party, take them out instantly. And finally Team Charlie will sweep the place once all the hostages are on the aircraft and will set the explosives. Is the plan understood?”

(FLASH)

“Are all the hostages out?” “Apparently yes Captain, but they are searching the premises once more just to be sure.” “Good, once they’re out the explosives will be set off.”

(FLASH)

“THERE ARE STILL HOSTAGES IN THERE?!” “Cap, they already sweeped the place thrice and no more hostages were found. And the dynamite timer is already set, there is nothing we can do”

(FLASH)

‘Images of the building exploding and screaming coming from the rescued people. Most of the commotion being the people saying how there were more hostages that just got killed’

(FLASH)

Steve woke up with a jump. He had a nightmare about the innocent people he accidentally killed. He had ordered the explovies timer be set when the team leader had confirmed there were no more hostages in the structure. But yet there were. They had not searched hard enough to find them and now the hostages were just mere ash and burned bodies lying underneath bricks and rubble.

Even though Steve woke up, you were still fast asleep, no longer in his arms but still on his side of the bed. He was breathing heavily, his face, neck and hands sweating profusely. He turned the bedside lamp on. But when he turned to face you, slowly his breathing evened out.

The serene and peaceful look of your face smushed in the pillow was all he needed to see. To see that you were safe, you were unharmed and most importantly right next to him, alive. He looked at you and softly said, “I’m sorry if I say I need you, but I don’t care.” “There is so much I wish I would’ve done differently. But I didn’t and I made mistakes. Mistakes that have cost the lives of innocent people… Is it wrong for me to say that I need you to be strong for me? There is only so much I can do, so much I can hide. Especially in a situation like this when you’re not nearby, cause when I’m not with you I’m weaker.” Steve uses the back of his hand to swipe away the stray tear.

He turns the lamp off and lies back down in bed, cuddling close to you. Little did he know that you woke up with all that movement just in time to hear him say this, “You make me strong.”

An Unsent Letter AND A Romance that Never Will Be

Dearest Caps,

Do you know I've sung love songs about you? You make me giggle like a stupid mess. Every couple of days, I develop a crush on you, that feels very new, but isn't.

This is a joyful letter. Do you know you're so fucking cute! Cats aren't supposed to be cute; how the fuck did you manage that. A close second to my favourite nephew. I feel so jumpy when you pull my legs. I don't even want to retaliate at that.

[This is a para in Hindi, basically lines in praise of her beauty, smile and laughter.] Arre, yeh toh badi jaldi khatam ho gaya. Mujhe toh laga tha lamba chalega. Meh, kya karein, itni hi acchayiyyan hai tujhmein. Teri smile kitni bekar hai pata hai? Aur teri hansi toh aur bhi ghatiya hai, tujhe hansta dekhkar saara mood kharab ho jata hai. Airport the jab tu mujhe lene aayi thi, pink plazzos, black kurti aur woh jhumke. Main toh shock mein chali gayi thi kuch seconds ke liye, bhoot dikh gaya ho jaise. I was so stunned -- activated the "what's the procedure" meme inside me.

I told you no, that I now officially identify as a liquid, well that's coz I melt when you're around. I melt looking at your pictures. I joke that I hope I don't evaporate coz that'd make me gender gaseous(this one is a stolen joke)!

You make me laugh and I like making you laugh, And I don't know whether our sense of humour matches or what but it's fun with you. Laughter is really essential to my being, as essential as finding or recognising or seeing beauty is. And I think having things light heared, to be able to have these moments, share these moments is nice. I think I'll get fed up of a friendship or a romance and get claustrophobic where there's little space and scope for sharing laughs.

When you pick up your phone to click my photo, I sink my face in my hand, "arre!” you say! Ab I wish I could explain to you, I feel nervous and shy and the butterflies start to kick in. Because when you pick up your phone, I KNOW that you are seeing me, AND I feel scared that you’ll see through me. That you’ll see in my eyes, the words that I try so hard to bury. So I hide my face, and in that I hide “Oh my god, I love you so much Capsey.”

Dil toh yahi chahta ahi ki table doosre chor par baith kar tumhari aankhon mein kho jaun [the heart just wants to sit across the table and get lost in your eyes.] I want to look in your eyes and see what they entail, what they have to tell. I want us to look into each other's eyes if that's what you want too. If and only if. I don't think friends do this, if this is what romance is, then be it. OR perhaps I;m romanticising eyes and weirdly staring into eyes too much, in which case, well! We have another thing to laigh about. And you can make fun of my cheese and bollywood. I wish I could ask you out on a date, I wish I could say, "I love you" to you sometimes. I LOVE YOU, you know. I want to flirt with you, and I want to let myself enjoy it. I want us to flirt with each other.

I feel bad, guilty for wriitng things I want from you. It feels selfish. But I want to be honest. It is what it is. Don't wanna hide it. Not from myself at the very least. From you, I probably will. I often find myself second guessing what to say to you. Consciously trying to decide whether what I say lies on this OR that side of the boundary. Whether I'll end up saying something overtly sexual or whether what I'll say is too "loving", as in the langauge makes you uncomfy or whether what I'll say will occupy too much space. I want to not second guess a lot of these times. I want some of these boundaries to disappear.

I am not exactly sure what romance is. You read a lot, nothing I'd say will be as poetic or as romantic as some of the things you've read. I'm not a poet, I'm a lover. I wish for us to find or make our own romance together. One that may or may not be in the books but it won't matter because it's ours. I so dearly want to find out with you what our romance could be.

I want to see the sparkle in your eyes when you come across something interesting, and when you find beauty and meaning and music and depth. And I want to bring hot water bags when your hands hurt from drawing. And cook halwa when you're cranky. You can be as cranky as you want. You don't have to hold it in.

For saying all of these wants, I know my hope isn't hope, but delusion rather.

And so, I just want to say, You take away cynicism from my life, and you know how cynical I am. You opened your arms and took me in and embraced me. I am so very grateful for that. I can't stop admiring how actively you live your life, how you take initiatives. I see that whatever you seek, you try to create and be part of processes that help you experience it. You don't yearn for what you seek, you live it. Everyday. You're so so kind. And authentic. And you create spaces so that people can be their authentic selves. How unafraid and unapologetic you are. I will forever be in gratitude for coming across you, and definitely in awe of you.

If you were a song, you would be a Bollywood Hindi Song. I am not talking about the new age songs which just consists of groovy music and senseless lyrics and is trending only for a couple of days. Instead you remind of the old classics, the kind of songs that are unforgettable. You are a 90's Shah Rukh Khan song that I keep going back to reminisce about the good old days. All the romantic songs sung in those famous rom coms of early 2000s? Yup, that's you.

Your outer appearance showcasing the bad boy and high life aesthetic might give off the vibe of a Weeknd song but that heart of yours is made up of songs written by Anuv Jain. You are the kind of song that describes the kind of love that is as intense as something like junoon and as sincere as something like mohabbat.

I can keep associating you with a million songs like the songs that define you, the songs that explain how you make me feel, the songs that make me think about you, the songs that take me back to the times we have spent together, the songs that make me picture about the idea of us. But the thing is, none of these songs can ever beat my favourite song — you.

She felt as if her world had been put on pause, that she was simply existing instead of living. It was a strange feeling, overall. She wasn’t use to it. If anything, whenever this feeling started to creep up on her in the past, she’d always been quick to find something to bring her back on the right, slightly manic, path. Not this time. She didn’t feel as if she had the strength or motivation to do something like she would’ve use to in the past. All she could think about were two certain people. One of them, that is, has went back to college. The other, still keeping his distance. If this wasn’t a clear sign that she should get the hell out of Providence Peak and leave those two alone, she wasn’t sure what would be.

Sitting in the hookah lounge at the Jade Palace, slowly going through some mint shisha and continuing some work, it’d been a rather slow and quiet day. The lounge had always been available for both guests of the hotel and non-guests alike, ready for anyone and everyone. After all, people could also enjoy the food and drinks that were offered in the Golden Elephant, not just some shisha. Yet today, it was eerily quiet. Part of her was grateful for the silence, letting it allow her to work without distractions. Part of her wished for chaos, letting it stop her from continuing to think about Bodhi and Bash. But would she ever be able to stop thinking about them?

Glancing up, she noticed another person in the lounge. Glancing around, she remembered that there were a couple of TVs placed around the room and was right now playing an old school Bollywood movie. She looked back before calling out, “Do you want me to change the movie? It’s one of my favourites, but I can switch it to something else.”

I've been wanting to watch this film for a really long time and I finally got the chance to do so on the pretext of doing a college assignment. I think it may low-key be my new favorite, hence I am starting my new blog by writing a review of this very film. Though I must add that I am absolutely obsessed with period films, especially those set in ancient India, so I was definately biased towards this one.

Synopsis

Magadh's King Ajaatshatru (Suniel Dutt), as indomitable as he is ambitious, disguises himself as a soldier belonging to his rival Kingdom- the small but illustrious Republic of Vaishali, in order to escape being identified and killed during war. A defeated and wounded Ajaatshatru stumbles upon Amrapali (Vyjanthimala)- a compassionate woman and a patriotic citizen of Vaishali who nurses him back to health. Soon, a romance starts to blossom amidst the two, but their relationship is bound to get jolted from it's false and deceitful foundation.

Plot/Writing & Execution

The story is based on actual historical figures. It has many of the cliché filmy elements we've seen in bollywood. I find this familiarity comforting. Afterall, there's a reason clichés are clichés.

Treating a mysterious soldier wounded in war and falling in love? Jaakakakakakja yes please.

That mysterious soldier being the king of your rival Kingdom? Pspspspssskkss gosh stop you're killing me.

The war sequence, I would say, is fairly good for the time. The overall cinematography is #aestheticcc .

The film was not successful upon it's release, and that's such a shame. It's epic.

Characters

Saying it out loud in case the title wasn't a big enough hint, Amprapali is the hero of the story. It's been a few months since I watched the film, and there isn't a lot I can recall about Ajaatshatru. Amrapali, on the other hand, steals the show in every frame. Vyjanthimala's graceful presence, her dancing skills and her beautiful dark eyes (and those brows!) are more than enough to keep one engrossed, in addition to how nicely the character of Amrapali has been written.

Costume

Bhanu Athiya, India's first Oscar winner designed the costumes for the film. While not always true to history (especially the men's costumes), the overall impact of the clothing is what would be desired for a period film. They are instrumental in transporting the viewers back in time.

Amprapali's wardrobe is sensual and majestic, with a couple of really gorgeous looks that stand out. Extensive use of ornaments that adorn her look very whimsical. Ajaatshatru's Kushan-inspired (?) wardrobe is highly inaccurate for 5/6th century BCE Magadha, but still works for his towering personality.

Music

The late Lata Mangeshkar sang all the songs in this film, so you know it's iconic. I thoroughly enjoyed the long dance routines. Vyjanthimala as Amrapali is a dream, and the music is enthralling. In particular, I love Tadap Yeh Din Raat Ki for it's subtle, sensual and demure visuals and my personal favourite pearl-adorned pink outfit from the movie, and Neel Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein for the iconic red outfit, mellow tune, and Vyjanthimala's graceful dance.

I watched it on some sketchy website using VPN but it's available on Netflix for the less adventurous (and less frugal) ones.
