We shouldn’t fear failure because 1. it’s inevitable and 2. we learn so much more when we fail than when we don’t. Successful people are not those who somehow never failed - they’re the ones who never gave up and didn’t let failure stop them from reaching their goals. Failure is an integral part of life. Failure teaches us what doesn’t work. It challenges us to look at the world differently; to try on a new perspective. To take a line from the book of parenting - it builds character.

Think about it - we value the qualities in others that are a direct result of failure: perseverance, determination, hard work, courage. We celebrate those in society who fight against the odds - the ones who fall down and stand back up countless times - and win.

So much good comes from failure. And yet, we fear it.

We fear failure because we’re embarrassed. Because we allow this single action to define the entire culmination of our lives up until this point. We even use the term “failure” to describe who we’ve become. We start to believe that failure is the end of the line.

But as Winston Churchill once said, “success is not final and failure isn’t fatal.”

It doesn’t matter how many times you succeed or how many times you fail. What matters is everything you do in between: what did you learn? What were you able to achieve as a result of every failure that came before?

So give it all you’ve got, even if it brings you crashing down to Earth.

What are Soulmates?

I wrote this poem for my husband on our 2-year anniversary. This, to me, is what soulmates are.

When you come together and feel as though you’re picking up where you left off in a previous lifetime. When you feel instantly at ease.

When you find that person you can be yourself around and know in your heart they love you because of who you are - not in spite of it.

When you love another with the same natural ease of drawing breath.

I don’t know if there’s a soulmate out there for everyone, but I’d like to believe there is. I don’t necessarily think that because someone has found their soulmate that means there isn’t another out there they never met.

I think we all get more than one chance in life, and I’d like to believe the same goes with finding love and finding our soulmate.

Why Love is Always Worth It

When it comes to love, we are so often afraid of the vulnerability it requires from us. Especially when we’ve opened ourselves up to love once already and we were hurt in the process.

Some people sling the word “love” around like we’re all capable of falling in and out at any given moment. The truth is, many people don’t know what real love looks like. They might think they’re being loving when they’re not, and as a result, those they hurt think love isn’t worth the end result. And why would they? Being moderately adored, controlled, or lusted after isn’t exactly the fairy tale love we dream about.

And love isn’t a fairy tale, don’t get me wrong. It’s not perfect, whole, and pristine. It’s messy because that’s life. It’s messy because we humans are messy. We don’t get it right all the time, and that’s a tragedy.

But love is a bit of a miracle. When you experience real, true love - unconditional love that forgives, heals, nurtures, cares - when you experience that, you’ll know the difference. You’ll realize that what you had before couldn’t even compare. You’ll realize that going through the pain and heartbreak you went through was worth finding the true meaning of love.

We’re all different. We all have different experiences, different vices, different views on just about everything. But I hope you agree that love is worth it. I hope you know the love that I’ve known. I hope you give away that kind of love, and I hope someone else showers you in it (God knows, you deserve it!).

Something to Say

Sometimes being a writer is frustrating because you expect to be able to write something amazing every time you sit down, and if you don’t, it must mean you’re a fraud.

We live in constant fear of being “found out,” proclaiming ourselves writers, while secretly whispering to ourselves that we’re anything but. How can you be a “real” writer if you can’t write on command? Isn’t that basically who a writer is?

Sometimes you get so caught up in reading others’ work that you fall into despair that nothing you write will ever measure up or be original.

On those days, you just have to take a step back, remind yourself you can’t write the perfect piece every day, and come back to it again tomorrow.

Personally, a hiatus from social media was very helpful for me. I was able to find my own voice again, instead of getting lost in trying to write like the writers I admire. It’s OK to aspire to be like someone else, to admire their style - but don’t lose yourself in the process. Keep your own unique voice. Your work may not sound/feel like that of other writers you view as successful, but that’s exactly the point! What a boring world it would be if we were all the same.

What happens to me if the words disappear,

if I lose my voice, to my greatest fear?

If I can’t express these feelings inside,

I’m afraid I would drown, I’m afraid I would die.

So whenever I complete another piece,

and I finish reveling in my sense of release,

the panic starts to grow in my chest,

that I’ve reached the summit of my best.

What if all the words to say have been said?

And original thought is pretty much dead?

What if every conjugation of “I love you”

has already been found and overused?

But with so much beauty and wonder in life,

amidst the anger, heartbreak, and strife,

there will always and forever be something to say;

just, maybe, not today.

Sometimes I think we can start to become numb to the words “I love you,” or become so accustomed to hearing them that we stop fully appreciating their meaning. That’s what this piece is about - me reminding my husband that I love him, emphasizing each piece of that simple statement to wring every last ounce of meaning from it. I. Love. You.
