How My Concept Addresses the Criteria #2
Audience Engagement, Ethics and Diversity
My concept mainly focusing on B2C target audience as it mainly focuses on the residents of the area. The concepts provides day activities and is culturally diverse as it provides the indigenous and nautical history of the Northshore area. Potentially the concept could be quite sustainable if many of the materials were previously recycled. My concept also focuses on B2B target audience as it encourages growth in community with all ages being able to use it. The project is also flexible as the sections can be put into different sections in different areas. I am encouraging the local indigenous community by providing history and artwork from their culture (with permission) to help them to be represented in the Northshore area. People would potentially re-visit my project to see the new artwork and history that is added/replaced on the boards every couple of months. People would also re-visit for the fitness equipment and the children’s area of the concept.
Feasibility, Sustainability & Enduring Significance
I am aware that my project may potentially go over the budget due to the uncertain costs of the fitness equipment pod. However, I do not believe that the rest of the concept will majorly affect the budget. My concept can be refreshed as I plan to have the images, text and artwork on the boards to be changed every couple of months. I do believe that my concept is environmentally friendly as I have planned to have many of the part to be created with recycled materials.

How My Concept Addresses the Criteria #1
Responds to the site and the client brief
My concept responds to the client brief by being sustainable, flexible in arrangement and space. Furthermore, it focuses on diversity as all ages can able to interact with the project with each of the 3 main areas. Many people within the target audience will be able to use my concept as it does not focus on one age range. Indigenous and nautical history is a strong part of my concept as I will have multiple boards showing images and texts. Indigenous history will also be shown through potential artwork done by indigenous artists. My concept also has a digital footprint as there will be multiple QR codes for people to scan to find out more information. To possibly get people to revisit the site the images, text and QR can be changed every couple of months to present information and artwork.
Originality
I am aware that the fitness equipment is not at all my original idea. The Brisbane City Council has been doing this concept for many years. I do believe that creating a children’s area and multiple boards out of reusable materials is unique. There are boards in other parks but those boards mainly have information about locations in the park like toilet and paths. My boards will only have history of nautical and indigenous history of the Northshore Area. Some sections do not need to be done by the creative sector as those sections only required building.

Research #4
For the history and art boards and possible sliding puzzle, I would like to reuse the wharf wood that is available at the site. Not only will it reduce the material costs for the project but also be more sustainable as recycled materials will be used. Unfortunately, I am not aware of the structural integrity of the wharf wood, so if the wharf wood is too weak for my project I will have to get fresh timber for the concept.
There is a type of timber that I have chosen if fresh timber has to be purchased for my concept. It is 90 x 35mm pine framing H3 timber, this timber is thinner and is treated for outdoor projects. For researching prices I will only look at 6 metre costs, as many companies do not sell my chosen timber at 1 metre, the common measurement was found to be 6 metres. Going through multiple sources, the approx. price range for my chosen timber is $4.65 - $41.58. So depending on the amount of timber required for my concept, the cost should not be high for timber in my material costs.
To protect the images, text and QR codes on the boards, there needs to be a protective casing on the board. The material I have chosen the a clear acrylic sheet, it’s stronger than glass and half the weight. The approx. measurement I have used to get my price range is 900 x 600, though not every manufacturer will have the same measurements. The price range is $35 - $69.95 per clear acrylic sheet.

Research #3
On the board section of my concept I wish to have images (with small sections of texts) of indigenous and nautical history of the Northshore area. With each image having a QR code next to it for people to scan if they want to learn more about the history and/or artist.
QR codes are usually free, costs are only applied if a certain program is used to create said code. There are two type of QR codes; static and dynamic. Static QR codes are created from programs and can’t be changed or edited after being finalised. These codes are typically used to send people to same place for the entire time the code is active. Dynamic QR codes are different as they built through a database, which makes it possible to change the destination that people are taken to. The dynamic QR code will be better for my concept, especially if I am able to rotate the images every couple of months.
For the nautical history section of the boards, research will done to confirm facts and historians also confirming facts. Images from when the port was active along with significant people that worked at the port
The indigenous section of the boards will require more approval as all history and art has to go through the indigenous council of the Northshore area. Some art or history may not be acceptable to be shown to the public. If there is indigenous art that does get approved I would want the art to be done by indigenous artists, especially local indigenous artists. An example of this is in the first image, taken from the Brisbane Indigenous art gallery (Ryan Presley, Blood Money, 2016 - 2019). I am aware that they will be a commission price for the artists to create work for the boards.
In the third image it shows the approx. sizing I would like to have for the images on the boards. For each side of the boards I plan to have about 2-3 images with QR codes next to them. Along with small sections of texts, the images can not be big as there won’t be enough space on the boards to support the desired amount of images.

Research #2
The fitness equipment component for my concept will be the most expensive part. In a 2019 report for scoping the area for the Alpine Shire area to place fitness equipment states that fitness equipment seen in public parks cost from $75,000 - $150,000. This alone has already gone over the budget that the project has available. However, this cost range is most likely to multiple different fitness equipment pods placed in the same area. The first image above shows the City of Darebin, Bundoora Park installation, which has multiple different fitness equipment pods. The complete budget with all the project components listed states is costs $80,206. This project has 4 main fitness equipment pods, for my project I only require one fitness equipment pod. Making it likely possible to for a fitness pod to be added to my concept as the costs will be greatly reduced due to the smaller size of require fitness equipment.
This further supported by the Swan Hill Rural City Council’s Riverside Park project. In 2004 the Victoria council gave a budget of $80,000 for six small fitness equipment pods to be constructed on the side of 4km track. In the second and third images shows the sizes of the fitness equipment pods added to this project. For my concept I plan on having a pod approx. the same size, making it easier to be placed within the site and reducing the costs needed to construct it.

Research #1
The main material I need for my concept is metal poles. I need metal poles for the boards and the play area sections. I would like to use recycled metal poles if I am able to so I can use more recycled materials.
a_space is the building company that creates the free fitness equipment throughout Brisbane City parks. Following the same dimensions of the 89mm diameter circular pole. Each pole purchase will be 3m length so that length can be adjusted to lower lengths if need be. A company in Toowoomba sells 88.9mm diameter with walls thickness of 4.78mm. The poles only come in 6.5m lengths at $105/pole. One pole can be split in half to create each approx. pole length required. About 3 boards will be created along with another 3 poles required for the puzzle board and 2 swing sets, overall requiring 6 poles for two of the sections. Causing the cost of the recycled metal poles to be $630.
Non-recycled circular metal pole however will be more expensive. For the required amount (pole length and quantity) of metal poles (non-recycled) will cost from approx. $1400 - $2800. Causing non-recycled poles to be over double or triple the amount of recycled poles.
For main choice of material, I would like to use recycled metal poles due to it being more sustainable for the environment and lower costs.

Research and Comparing Concepts
The most obvious project to compare to my idea is the Park-Up project in Taiwan. This concept was the inspiration for my idea however, I have greatly expanded the original idea. The Park-Up project was about creating a community area via the use of multi-sized poles to create multiple use structure. My concept also creates a community area but has multiple sections that can spread apart or close together. Furthermore, the area will have something for everyone like a play area for children, a fitness area for adults or younger people and boards full of history about the nautical and indigenous history of the Northshore area. The concept also has a digital footprint unlike the Park-Up project. In the end both my concept and the Park-Up are focusing on the ‘less is more’ idea, as both have simple components for their own concepts.
My concept does included a project that the Brisbane city council has created, however it’s not the main idea. Throughout Brisbane exercise equipment has been added to parks to encourage fitness. The concept that I have created does included this idea, though it is not the main and only attraction. I added the exercise equipment so a larger target audience can come to the site. Furthermore, my concept has three major sections until the exercise equipment which only focuses on one concept. I want
One of the main focuses of my concept is the history of the site. I do want to focus on both indigenous and nautical history however, I do want to also include art work that represents indigenous history or is done by indigenous people. This is to encourage diversity and some creativity into the history. The Brisbane city council recently had an indigenous art program where indigenous artist’s work can be shown to the general public. My concept will have a much smaller version of this and can be potentially refreshed every couple months. This is so new posts and artwork can be shown and to encourage people to come back to see the new items.

Concept chosen
I have chosen my first brainstorming idea as the concept that I wish to progress with.
I have chosen this idea due to the flexibility of the idea and the multiple aspects of the client brief has been meet
- The 3 main components can be together or separated throughout the site
- It fits with multiple audiences as children and adults can enjoy and experience the concept
- It can provide history of indigenous and nautical history, along with possible artwork about and/or from indigenous people
- The concept is interactive as there is possible children’s puzzle and swing along with fitness area that people can use.
- Furthermore, QR codes can be added to the images on the boards to provide information to people along with creating a digital footprint
- The images on the board can be replaced/rotated with other images so that new information can be provided and people can be refreshed with something new

Brainstorming Idea #3
This idea will be focusing on the indigenous history of the Northshore area. Along the main path that surrounds the main lawn there could be art pieces present done by indigenous people and/or represent indigenous history of the Northshore area.
There could art done on the actually path with a plaque in the ground displaying the meaning. Also, small statues could be added to the edges of the lawn with plaques as well to display the history of the Indigenous people.
Nautical history could also be added to the art pieces to show some of the history. However, more Indigenous art and history is encouraged due to lack of representation within the site.

Brainstorming Idea #2
This idea focuses more on the digital footprint and history of the area. An area in the site could be create by boards or a shipping container spilt into two halves to create multiple areas within the site. There can be many images displaying people involved in the history of the site like the shipping area or indigenous people. Possibly, local artists can present small-medium art pieces to the area. Each image could have a QR code next to it for people to scan to get more information about the general history/people so they can learn more. To encourage people to come back and visit the area I suggest that about every month the images and QR codes are replaced to new ones so that people can continue to learn about the area. Though the images do not have to replace and can remain the same for the project.

BRAINSTORMING IDEA #1
The ParkUp – Taipei, Taiwan case study is about making a small area into a gathering area using vertical and horizontal bars that can be used multiple uses (examples in pictures above). The idea is to use the poles to create boards with unique history of the site by using the wharf boards to be the actually boards of where the information is placed on.
There can also be art from local and indigenous artists on the wharf boards as well.
I also want to include a family aspect to this idea. I would keep the swing in the second picture but not the hammock and the bucket and ball items. The bucket and ball item would could be possibly replaced with a sliding puzzle of a cargo ship. This is to keep the theme of the nautical history but also making sure that items aren’t stolen. The pieces would also have magnetics to help keep them in place instead of sliding around.
Furthermore, another section could easily be added to this. Exercise equipment can be added to the area. This will encourage all age groups and fitness.

Client Brief - Place Product
Local and connectivity
This is focusing on how people within Brisbane (residents and tourists) will be able to access the site. Furthermore, Northshore is right in the middle of two populated areas within Brisbane with many entrance points with being able to access the site via river, bus or car. To provide many options for the community to come and go.
Public Landscape and Realm
Overall, the future plan for the site is to aim for an very environmental friendly area. Which is one of the main focus areas for the site. The main green area in the site could be used for recycled attraction, for example reusing certain items like the wharf wood. The grounds can also be used as an attraction to help improve the environment by providing interesting activities to expand knowledge.
Retail and Dining
Northshore is a big foodie area with Eat Street and potential become a bigger food area if more restaurants, café and/or stalls. Which could be one of the attractions added to the site
Events and Attractions
Northshore will be able to host many large events, especially music related events as a stage
Commercial
Northshore has a large commercial base which can encourage people to explore the area with business that people already know and help smaller business get notice. This can help provide diversity within the community as many different types of business can appear in the Northshore area.
Built Form and Infrastructure
These points provide a solid path to a sustainable angle for the site. To show that Northshore cares about the area, environment and history. Showing that Northshore has importance and will last due to reusing materials and infrastructure in the area.
Residential
The residential area will become a major part of Northshore as it will grow the community within the area. The residential area will be able to accept families, partners and single people with the different residential apartments and homes in Northshore. Which will increase diversity as many people will be able to live in the Northshore area.
Investment and Development
Northshore will become a major area within Brisbane as more jobs will become available to the community. Furthermore, in the future the Northshore will become a major significance in Brisbane as it will lots of revenue in the future.

Target Audiences
B2C Target Audience (New residents, Current Residents and Workers, Destination Visitors)
Most likely in twenties or early thirties, More likely to go out and do activities and experiences, Likes day to day experiences, Arts, Culture, Active Lifestyle, Travel, Food and Dining, Culturally diverse, Cares about the environment, They need confidence, convenience, community engagement, rewards and pride
B2B Target Audience
Attracted by Northshore vision, investment in future success and vision, Collaborative, Flexible, agile and inclusive, Existing industry tenants seek to reach clean tech opportunities, Want to attract local talent and customers, Wants businesses that attract similar groups of people, Wants ease of build on flat land, Wants to attract local talent and customers, Wants businesses that attract similar groups of people, Wants community growth
Both target audiences have multiple items that across over each other. The most important aspect for the target audience is community. They want a place where local businesses can thrive and when residents can easily interreact with other residents. To create a strong and inviting community within Northshore.
There also needs to be experiences that a lots of unique interests can enjoy along with being able to be culturally diverse for all the communities within Northshore. The experiences should not be too complex but also fun to attract more people. The experiences should also be easy to change and grow to encourage people to come back to see what has been added/replaced within the experiences. The experiences should also fit with the current times as one of the major target audiences is a younger generation. So this means that the experiences are encouraged to have a more digital footprint. Furthermore, target audience B2C has an high importance for the environment, so sustainability is extremely for this project.

Tutorial 1 Question Activity
1. 5 things that are distinctive/different/special about Northshore?
- 6km from CBD and 8km from Brisbane Airport
- Eat Street
- Right at the waterfront of the Brisbane River
- Lots of nautical history throughout Northshore (Port and Wharf)
- Indigenous history (mythology of the rainbow serpent being the Brisbane river as an example)
2. What characterises Northshore’s history?
It has two main histories; indigenous and nautical. The site does not really have any indigenous history, however Northshore has lots of nautical history. The site used to have lots of ships come to the shipping port to collect large amounts of materials. Unfortunately, the port is not longer in use. The wharf however is still in used and the general public can access it to look out to the river.
3. How is Northshore’s history reflected in the physical environment?
Northshore doesn’t have much indigenous history within the area, it is mainly the nautical history that is shown throughout the area. There are old ships, shipping containers (that are being repurposed) and buoys seen within the Northshore area. The wharf is the main nautical history aspect of the site which can be utilised for my project.
4. What stories do you wish to convey about Northshore through your project?
The stories that I wish to convey is the nautical and indigenous history of Northshore. I would also like to try to add an local artist aspect into my project, to potential to get locals to Northshore’s artists.

In the first picture it is quite obvious that the site area that we have access to is an unusual shape. Furthermore, it’s noticeable that both pedestrian and vehicle entries are a long distance to enter the site/parking. People have to walk a decent distant to reach the site and vehicles have to also drive into the site to reach the car park area. The current car parking area is small however, in the client brief it is mentioned that extra parking will be added when mostly the new infrastructure is added for future residents. There are small and unique shaped areas surrounding the lawn area which can be used for small food venues, art pieces and/or interactive activities. These smaller items can be spread throughout the site which can encouraged people to explore the whole area to see every unique item.
The second picture shows the hangar that is in the site. The hangar will most likely be the main attraction in the site as it can easily accommodate many live shows that can attract many people. The converted shipping container area will most likely be the main focus area of the site. The dome shelter can be a relaxing bench and table area for families during the day as they would be able to see the whole site and the river. Furthermore, the dome is extremely close to the store and amenities available to the public. With also lots of seating areas that surround the greenery in the site. The greenery would improve the environmental impact and provide natural shady within the site.
In the final picture it shows that wharf of the site. About half of the wharf is not accessible to the public, most likely due to safety guidelines. The main purpose of this area is so that people can look out to the river and are able to relax in the available seating while enjoying views. In the main lookout area there is some seating and planters, though there is a large area that could be potential used as an art attraction or a different interactive exhibit.
