Absolutely agreed. Yeah unfortunately Ryan wasn’t the killer and i knew it because they basically dangled the keys in front of you in every interview about his character😭 “he’s so sus” was literally used to describe him so i kinda knew that they were just teasing him as the killer, which did kinda work but it was so obvious. I know Milo has Zombies 4 slated for next year, so that’s a bigger role, and I hope he gets more leads/supporting characters in bigger movies. (Live action Flynn Rider may be a stretch but i’m here for it) Love the Josh idea btw, he could definitely be a player to guys too, not just women. I forget what exactly his MO was and why he did what he did in the show, so i’ll have to rewatch it.

i also feel like the animation this season is different, more crisps or something, because it looks even better than season 1 already gorgeous one. fengqing taking hold of me again was unexpected, but im dealing with the onslaught of emotions! i think it's just been too long since ive seen them in new scenes :"))
LQQ IS THE MVP OF THE DONGHUA AT THIS POINT! i looooove his design so much, more than the manhua one personally, and every scene he was in was soo good, i would have hard time choosing the one favorite as well. i think lqq debut this season was absolutely on point, and honestly i love watching him on my screen. he's so precious and when i tell you every scenes he's in makes me love him more and more im not kidding.
KEJEJJRJRJ FY AND LQQ INTERACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN SOO GOOD! especially considering mq is much more open as fu yao and being touched by lqq's sincerity and concern for mq would be right there on his face. (dw they make me cry as well🥹) i think i would also like to explore lqq's reaction to qi rong insulting mq, or maybe even their interactions during the aftermath of the tong'lu. mq being canonically good with children and helping lqq with guzi would be soo cute 🥰🥺 their potential for a strong and genuine companionship has me squealing as i write this, no lie
im so with you on your view of quirong!! it's definitely not a ship for me, even if i do tend to give every ship i come across a chance. although i think a fandom as well plays a role in my dislike, the overall impression of the ship didn't really give me the right vibe to like it either. im not above liking a pretty fanart for them when i come across it, but overall i just don't care about them. however it is always nice when you come across someone who also isn't a fan of the popular ship, makes you feel less crazy for not liking them 😭
mhmm if only more people thought like that, the discourses in the fandom would not exist :") it's so silly thinking everyone would have the same taste about fiction and media they watch and choose to interact with, and if that were to be the case the fandoms would be such a dull place to be. everyday i feel like the fandoms have went from a fun place to find like-minded people who enjoy things you do and with whom you can gush over your silly little blorbos, to this draining chore where you're constantly afraid someone will be on your throat for whatever reason if you dare say something about any character whether you like them or don't. it's honestly becoming exhausting but that's exactly why curating your own fandom experience and environment is important to have fun.
im personally ready to drop a fic if i see a trope i don't like or interpretation i don't agree with, even if i was already invested into the story prior. im willing to look past the characterization issue when the fics are clearly meant to be crack, but otherwise it really is very important to me that characters be the closest to canon as possible, especially in canon universe. modern aus are tricky, but honestly with enough lore throw in to explain it, i can swallow slight mischaracterization. anything fanon related tho, yeah im dipping so fast 😭 gods i sure sound pretentious and nitpicky about this but it's true, i learned the hard way that the only way to enjoy a fandoms is to set standards for what you like and not and not really care about others opinions, it's so much more enjoyable and you will eventually find the like-minded people who will support your delusions
side characters are gold mine when it comes to fics and general fandom experience, and from what ive noticed, the less popular the better 😭😭 sure you will probably have to make your own fan work but it's soo worth it at the end of the day! also less discourses so it's definitely a win. i also feel like the side characters/pairings usually have more interesting concepts when it comes to fics/art 🤔 this is not the case in every fandom but from my experiences, fics and art about side characters somehow feel more satisfying? idk to me it always comes across how people make a thing without it being cut out and served for them by already established canon, so to me it always feels more enjoyable to interact with such works

I’m so sad we have to wait a little longer for the next episode to come out,,,,, I need to see fengqing more 😭 Also!!! Lqq really is the heart and soul of the season so far!!! I guess that makes sense considering we’re right in the middle of his arc but he really is such a joy to see in every scene— they really made him so baby and if last episode is anything to go by they’re about to make him so anguished (affectionate). I love this boy so much.
Also every time we bring up more and more different qianqing scenarios, I can’t help feeling that they’re actually so surprisingly complimentary to each other. Now I’m actually just disappointed that mxtx never really explored their dynamic. Lqq would’ve been a perfect ally in mq’s hardships and mq would’ve been a such an asset to have in the search for qr and the management of Guzi’s care (not sure if mq would be nurturing but he’d definitely come through with a lot of “Why aren’t you [insert form of care here] ?”). They could’ve benefited from being closer.
I think there’s something novel about side characters and rarepairs that makes them (personally) so appealing. We don’t see so much about them so we want to know more and from that want comes so much unique and interesting exploration. I just read an entire story about a pair of main guys— I wanna know more about the people who were a part of their story. It’s about the fun of redirecting the spotlight 🥹
(Also I think in a way everyone is a little pretentious with their personal preferences for what they enjoy and how they enjoy it. If the writing or the art isn’t doing anything for you or it loses you along the way then that’s just part of the subjective experience of the arts! It’s okay to admit to being picky or selective.)
Anyway—! As a lqq art peddler I am happy to keep peddling more lqq art in the future. Might even start drawing more donghua lqq (manhua lqq is very special to me but donghua lqq has charmed me so much 😭). I really gotta get back into the frenzied rate at which I used to draw him— now with a couple extra boyfriends LMAO.

So Action Comics #1050 came out this week, and I'm genuinely excited to see what this new era of Superfam has in store. How they handled Clark and Jon getting their secret identities back made a lot more sense than anything I guessed at. But there is one thing about it that made me raise an eyebrow. Well...not specifically the plot but something Bruce says in reaction to the new development, and in turn how Clark responds to it.
So... this exchange bugs me. Not necessarily because I think its absolutely untrue but it does feel confusing, unearned and lacking nuance.
This was something that was getting a decent amount of focus in the comics around this time, especially since the public had picture evidence of Lois kissing Superman. Lois and Clark even had a conversation about it in the Lois Lane mini
For starters, way back when Clark revealed his identity during the Bendis run, it was heavily implied that his secret's effect on Lois and her character was one of the reasons he did it. Like Clark and Lois are historically really bad at avoiding PDA when Clark is all suped up; which has led to rumors and speculation that Lois is having an affair. Of course, the public doesn't know that she's cheating on her husband...with her husband.
So yeah Clark isn't thrilled about it, Lois is too busy to really focus on it, plus she's used to the double standard. But the general public not fully appreciating Lois Lane for the work she does and just focusing on her connection to Superman is nothing new.
Secondly, I just don't buy Clark saying they didn't expect that to happen. Look at this scene from the Superman: Heroes special
This isn't a perfect scene. Bendis seems to completely forget that them getting caught kissing in public was something that Clark was very aware about and that they had discussed it (admittedly the discussion was in a mini written by Greg Rucka, not him so I'll take it easy on him for now. But he was the one who wrote about the kiss and the picture). But it is clear that this is something they have thought a lot about and discussed. Clark warns her that this is going to greatly impact their marriage but Lois knows the risks and tells him to go for it anyways. So Clark saying that his public identity's effect on how the public views his wife is a surprise? That doesn't really seem to track.
I can understand Bruce saying what he did, he's not going to know about the intimate conversations Clark and Lois have in private, but Clark should've given some push back on that statement instead of just accepting it as a simple truth.
Lastly, (and this is probably the most nitpicky point in a nitpicky post about 2 panels) this line of dialogue bugs me because since Superman's identity was exposed, Lois has really not gotten that much focus. More specifically, the effects of Clark's decision on her life and public persona have not really had much focus. Now I'm by no means saying she's not been an important part of Superman comics since then, she's absolutely been present. But being present and being the focus are not the same thing. After Clark's identity was exposed there were definitely plot seeds placed that could have developed into us seeing the effects of this new normal on Lois but we really didn't ever see them reach fruition. We basically new she was writing a book, and we knew she received a lot of mail from people around the world asking for help (once again, from Superman: Heroes)
After Bendis' run ended Phillip Kennedy Johnson took over Action Comics. His run has been something I have been thoroughly enjoying but due to the plot taking Clark off world, Lois has not really had much presence. She's a consistent supporting character in Jon's comic but again, presence is not focus.
Now I really liked this detail...but we never saw it go anywhere. If I recall correctly this is both the first and the last time this massive pile of letters is brought up. But despite it's lack of importance on the canon it does just so happen to imply that Lois was not simply "reduced to being the wife of Superman."
But I still really feel that despite the briefness of this scene, it rang hollow. Definitely a misstep.
Which is why I feel Bruce's comment and Clark's response is just not an earned one from the writing team. We've really seen no evidence that the public has just started viewing Lois as Superman's wife. But we've also seen very little evidence that the public hasn't. This clearly hasn't been a point or priority for the comics to prove, so we have to take Bruce's words at face value. But considering the comics haven't taken the time to focus on Lois...do the writers really get to blame the fictional public for not focusing on Lois?
It's obviously a lot more complicated than focus on Lois = good and no focus on Lois = bad (although I am always going to be excited when Lois' gets attention). PKJ's run has been fantastic and, despite Lois' lack of attention, I do get the impression that he understands how important she is the Superman mythos. To his credit, and the rest of the writers working on Superfam comics, it does seem like Lois is going to get more focus in the Dawn of DC era. Powergirl also looks like she'll be getting more attention too. And I'm truly excited for that. I don't have the highest hopes in DC has a whole right now but I am really looking forward to the Superfam titles.

Yeah.. I don't know how dark, evil, or deranged Nijiro could be with his characters. I know Chishiya was deranged in ways, but he was known to outsmart his enemies rather than kill them. Not including Niragi.
But I am curious if Nijiro could pull that off for any character though.
This is why I get upset with live adaptions. I know, I know. Maybe I'm one to complain too much about details.. But this is why I do get way too upset over live adaptions. I'm nitpicky to the tiniest detail there is.
Dori as Niragi had an intimidating appearance. Tall, unusual clothing, body modifications. But also sadomasochistic in ways where he does not care about anyone and anything. When I think of the personalities of Niragi and Baji.. Baji is violent whenever he wants to be to whoever to harm, which made me think of the other character to some extent. But they're both intelligent too. Maybe mischievous in darker ways.
Like it was mentioned before. Mikey said that Baji would have set a car on fire because he was hungry, or angry, or any emotion like that. Is that weird that I could see Niragi doing that too? Maybe that's me.
Well.. I'm gonna spoil it anyway. No big spoilers! Naoto Kataoka, he is the actor of Jesse - who doesn't get introduced until the second H&L movie. When he has shaggy blond hair, I could imagine him as one of the characters in Tokyo Revengers. Maybe even as Chifuyu. Maybe.
That's why I get annoyed with live adaptions. On both sides to this whole spectrum.. Canonically stick to the characters ethnicity for the live adaptions. I get angry when they chance the gender, ethnicity, or even sexuality of characters. Like you just said. Tokyo Revengers cast of characters are predominantly Asian. With the occasional character who's mixed, like Emma and Izana. But then there are live adaptions to series like Black Butler and Fullmetal Alchemist where most of the characters are predominantly European, yet has an entire Asian cast. I'm nitpicky about it. This is just my opinion about live adations.
Everyone in High&Low deserves better. And now you know why a lot of these characters are the way they are.. Rocky respects women just because he was never able to help his mother and sister. I might be a bit biased. Rocky's one of my favorite characters. And Rocky's whole interaction with Kizzy. Koo's reaction to finding out Kizzy's trans.
But I also want to slap Rocky for being with that ugly woman who did keep referring to Kizzy as a man, even though Kizzy had operations - Rocky did mention that they Kizzy and Kaito went to American for all the operations to alter everything. Based on Rocky's hand gestures.
I'm neutral towards most of the Mighty Warriors group. I do like Ryu's character, even though he doesn't talk much. I like Jesse too. And I'm also fine with Ice to some extent. But at the same time, I feel like a lot of the Mighty Warriors group doesn't say much about their own pasts for you to be able to connect with them. Like.. Okay. We know they're mercenaries. They love music and fashion. And we know Sarah was a child who came from an abusive family, her father was abusive. But it doesn't really say much about the other characters that much, which, in my opinion, is a bit upsetting to me. I wish they had more story.
Unwanted trivia! The actress of Hikrai Kuina from Alice In Borderland, Aya Asahina, is married to Kenjiro Yamashita. An actor and musician. He portrays the character Dan in the High&Low franchise.
I don't know why I think that's funny. But I do think that.
mikey defo needs an actor that can do that dead/blank-eyed look. for those darker scenes like when he was beating kazutora to death during the bloody halloween or at the end of s2 when he was killing all his friends. chishiya was twisted, but definitely wasn’t as hands-on and dangerous as mikey is.

i can’t believe that i keep seeing people say they went overseas to get married, it’s even on the fandom wiki. like what do they think rocky’s hand wave meant?? that was clearly a ‘kizzy got bottom surgery’ hand motion. also love koo. he’s great.

Dutch Tim AU - multilingualism
Tim has been learning English since fairly young, but Dutch is still easier. His mom primarily spoke Dutch so he did as well
Besides Dutch, English and French, he also knows Latin and can read the Greek alphabet because he went to a gymnasium, which is a type of school that teaches those languages besides the usual subjects. He dropped Ancient Greek after the mandatory 3 years so he only remembers the basics of that
He used to write notes in English using Greek letters to communicate with his friends
He teaches the Greek alphabet to Young Justice for that same purpose
Tim has both the US English keyboard and the Dutch one on his phone so autocorrect doesn't correct words in the wrong language (trust me, it's a pain)
When he's tired, his English just stops working
He opens his mouth and the wrong fucking language comes out (as a multilingual i can confirm this actually happens)
Duke: hey can you hand me the controller?
Tim: oh ja hoor, hier

Tim: that was Dutch wasn't it
(Translation: Oh yeah, here you go)
Bruce starts learning Dutch for him a few months after Tim joins the family. Tim has a few reactions, in this order: 1. He recoils after Bruce says "Goedemorgen, Tim, hoe gaat het met je?" (Good morning, Tim, how are you?) because it's incredibly jarring to have people talk Dutch when they normally don't. His second reaction is to laugh because Bruce's pronunciation is hilariously wrong. And then he cries because Bruce is learning an entire language just for him!!! His dad wouldn't even do that!!
The other kids start picking up Dutch too, though their pronunciation is horrendous
Dick already spoke Dutch pretty well, his pronunciation is good/doesn't make Tim cry-laugh
Sayings are the worst. Tim constantly uses Dutch sayings in English and vice versa. It's hell

Being a "miereneuker" means being incredibly nitpicky about things that don't matter
Accidentally switching grammar and sentence structure. This happens all the time. So often in fact, that it doesn't even bother the rest of the family anymore, as long as it's understandable they just roll with it, otherwise they'll ask for clarification

What I Thought About "Echoes of the Past" from The Owl House
Salutations, random people on the internet who most certainly won’t read this. I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.
What probably gets debated the most in the fandom is the legitimacy behind King being the King of Demons. Some believe that there's truth to his statement, while others, like me, like to think that he was just some stray Eda picked up off the streets. Either option seemed likely, especially since Season One never gave an answer that leaned one way or the other.
Then here comes the writers finally answering the question of who King is in episode THREE of Season Two! Because, again, they don't waste time on giving fans exactly what they want.
Fans wanted answers behind King, we got 'em, and analyzing what those answers mean requires going deep into spoilers. So if you haven't checked the episode out yet, I highly recommend that you do. Trust me, it's worth seeing.
Now let's review, shall we?
WHAT I LIKED
Luz Experimenting with Spells: Hey, look! More proof that Luz isn't an idiot like some people flanderize her to be!
But, seriously though, this is a perfect little thread to introduce into the story. Luz collecting knowledge from Lilith's old books and past work she and Eda made adds to Luz's intelligence while also providing a believable explanation for how she gets new spells. It's also nice to see that she has this little notebook (or spellbook) to help see what works and what doesn't. It's a level of experimentation that proves her dedication to becoming a witch while also exemplifying how she isn't stupid. Occasionally reckless, sure, but you can't say that the person who figured out an invisibility spell through showing her work is also an idiot.
Francios with a Knife: How did Francois get a knife? I don't know. But the fact that a random knife plopped out behind him with little to no explanation is funny, and I will not hear otherwise.
I don't make the rules. I just abide by them.
Luz’s Invisibility Spell: I breezed past this, but I honestly love this invisibility spell. More specifically, I love that there's a limiter. It can turn you, objects, and people you're in contact with invisible, but only as long as you can hold your breath. It helps make the spell something the characters can't always rely on, which is appreciated. Because if it works as long as they concentrate, what's stopping them from sneaking into Belos' castle and assassinating him in his sleep? It's a smart way of explaining why they can't always rely on something, despite how insanely useful it is.
Luz: Let's gush about Luz some more, shall we!
"Echoes of the Past" is another episode that has Luz on top form. She is constantly supportive of King, even if Lilith has a point in the dangers of indulging his fantasy as a powerful tyrant. Doing so would cause more harm than good, especially when King finds out Luz doesn't believe him, but her going along with it was all done with the best of intentions. Luz doesn't want to hurt her friend, and even if she did in the long run, she still makes up for it by helping King learn more about his past.
And, as another reminder, Luz isn't stupid. She's the first to say they should leave when it's clear how dangerous the castle is and is quick to figure out there should be more at the top. Luz is a loyal and caring friend who's also guarded and intuitive when the situation calls for it. This episode understood that, so here's hoping other fans will too.
Lilith: Yeah, she's still growing on me.
I feel like this episode shows a better idea of Lilith's place in the group more than the past two. She's a person who's obsessed with knowledge and learning but considers herself above the jovial nature of King, Luz, and definitely Eda. Therefore, she acts as the perfect catalyst for what jumpstarts this week's adventure. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that she almost instantly dismisses King's claims due to considering herself more knowledgeable than everyone else. Still, I like how she's willing to believe King once she finally sees evidence that seemingly proves he really was the King of Demons, to the point of referring to him as "her lord." Hooty does the same thing, but it comes across as him fearing for his own life and choosing to be friends with someone who could maybe kill him in an instant. For Lilith, her newfound respect comes from the desire to learn more, and it's that desire that makes Lilith an enjoyable character to me. It's adorable to see, and it has some comedic flavor in moments like when she dismisses everyone else and their emotional revelations to take pictures of the carvings around her. I'm sure she'll cause some controversy like other characters with rushed reformations, but for me, I'm more than ok with her addition to the main cast.

Hooty Making Himself Portable: Ah, yes. The classic bit where a character does something horrifically grotesque off-screen, and we have nothing but character reactions and sound effects to imagine what happened between shot A and shot B. It's an oldie, but given how hard I was laughing (mostly because of Luz's gagging), it's still a goodie.
Eda’s Portable Bathtub Boat Thing: I mean...I was expecting Eda would use something to catch up with the others, but...that thing...well...I mean, I'm still laughing just by thinking about it. That should tell you how well executed this joke was.
John Luke: ...I'm gonna go ahead and add him to the list because HOLY S**T was this guy disturbing! From his design to his movements to even the sounds he makes when moving, everything about John Luke screams as something that will stay in kids' nightmares for a while. Now, this might seem like a complaint, but to be honest, I'm more than alright with how creepy John Luke is. I highly doubt adult viewers will consider John Luke scary, but I guarantee he'll terrify some of the youngins that this series is aimed for. And that's fine. It's good to creep kids out a little bit with something somewhat scary, as it might introduce them to more good horror stories later in life.
Plus, the reveal that John Luke was only a guard for King is pretty solid narratively speaking. You can see how John never really meant to hurt King aside from one accident when Eda escaped with him. If you want to read into it, I guess it might be questionable to tell kids that something that looks dangerous is secretly nice, but that's really nitpicky, in my opinion. John Luke was a fantastic threat that is designed and animated well, with a solidly executed twist. Some might hate what he presents, most will fear him, but we can all agree on one thing: His theme is awesome (can I get the track for that, please)!
King’s Backstory: Finally, at long last, we know who King is, thus putting an end to a year-long debate. And I fully mean it when I say that the writers gave the best possible answer. Because in a way, everyone was right. Yes, King was just an animal that Eda decided to adopt, like the nature-loving hippie she is inside (She's got the hair for it). However, while he may not be the King of Demons himself, he is still the son of someone who deserves that title. So while he isn't the King, there's a chance he might be the Prince. Once again, there's no direct answer, but given how the writers came up with something that pleases everyone while still providing more questions for debate, it acts as a brilliant move, in my opinion. So whatever answer we get next, I'm sure it will be just as perfect.

King’s Breakdown: NOR WAS IT READY FOR THIS LEVEL OF SADNESS!
But in all seriousness, a HUGE round of applause to Alex Hirsch for his performance in this episode. He expertly captured the raw emotions of shock, anger, betrayal, and sadness that King must have felt when finding out that everything he believed he was is a lie. It's one of those moments where I don't hear a person voicing lines in a booth (or wherever the hell VAs are voicing characters nowadays), but instead hear a living person being emotionally torn apart. It was heartbreaking seeing King so vulnerable as he's so guarded with his emotions. Seeing him like this adds so much more layers to a character that many would mistake him as a cute, comedic animal sidekick. But just like with Luz, there's more to him than people will tell you.
“I don’t even know what’s real or fake anymore!”: I'm just pointing out this line because I believe it's what convinces Luz to help King learn more about who he is. Hell, not knowing what's real or fake is the main reason why Luz got sent away in the first place, so I feel like she can relate to King when he's in a similar predicament.
Hooty and Lilith vs John Luke: This was just a cool scene with some epic moments of dodging John Luke's attacks and some funny ones, like how Hooty said the word "pain." It's a ten out of ten that I would rewind to watch again.
King’s Other Horn: I'd question the logistics of how a horn that got broken off when he was a baby still manages to fit perfectly in the present...but it is neat symbolism of King accepting his past and letting it be a part of him, so who cares?
(The fact that the colors of the broken-off piece don't match the rest of the horn is nice attention to detail as well.)
WHAT I DISLIKED
It's a Little Too Predictable: I pretty much figured almost every little twist the episode offers. But, I'm willing to say that's because I'm in my twenties, and I've seen enough stories similar to this one, so I'm more likely to know what will happen. The little monsters watching this will see it for the first time, so they'll most likely get more surprised than me...And that was my only complaint about the episode...which is more of a personal problem than an actual issue...I guess that means it's perfect.
IN CONCLUSION
"Echoes of the Past" is an easy A+ in my book. It gives lore and backstory that furtherly develops the characters that episodes like this should. It also tells a tragic story about King that still sprinkles in a few good jokes every now and again to lighten up the mood. Sure, there are some nitpicks I could mention (how did King remember his own birth?). But when the good stuff is done so well, what's the point of dwelling on small, insignificant issues? This is still a phenomenal episode that flew past all expectations I had for it, and it continues the winning steak this season is having so far.
(But that's still three home runs in a row. Meaning that a stinker is coming. Ooiee, is it coming!)

This might be a weird question, but is it normal for one person to go off on/lecture the other over small things in a romantic relationship?
Yesterday, I was telling my dad that I wanted to dye my hair, and he told me he would ask my mom. Today, he told me that he asked her, and she “exploded like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.”
He said that she just went off on him, going on and on about why it was a terrible idea. She didn’t stop there, though. She went on to lecture him for one incident, days ago, where he had told me that I didn’t have to eat a fruit after dinner (I was not hungry, but my mom would not stop harassing me over it). She basically told him that it was all his fault that I was not eating fruit anymore (I was, for the record, still eating fruit; I just had no appetite, so I was “only” eating two or three fruits a day).
When I asked my dad about this, he said that all romantic partners have flaws, so even if he had not married her, someone else would have had different flaws, just like how both he and my mom had their own flaws.
But it seems to my that the way my mom acts is a little extreme—she lectures my dad and me very often, and she always invalidates both our emotions. Both of us have some issues with falling asleep, and she’s always lecturing us for not listening to her and trying whatever “technique” she has. The thing is, though, that she starts acting all annoyed when we don’t do exactly what she says, even if what she says only makes things worse. She’s had an interest in spirituality, which is fine, but then she starts scolding us for not going by whatever she says.
A while back, we all got COVID, and she started getting mad at him for something and talking about how she needs to express her feelings. When it’s him, though, he apparently needs to just “change” his anger. He needs to just stop being worried.
Sometimes, she will even get mad at me for something, not because I did anything wrong, but because she was in a bad mood, and my dad will agree with her. Later, though, when I ask him, he tells me that he doesn’t really agree; he just didn’t want her on his case. I can’t even blame him because I do the same thing (my mom badmouths my dad a lot to me, and me a lot to my dad, and gets mad if we don’t agree with her).
My dad even helps me keep secrets from her—not about big things, but about little things that we both know will set her off (we dared to eat ice cream; I bought a shirt WITH MY OWN MONEY that was not on sale; other small things).
He even got her a new car for her anniversary, complete with a red ribbon, and while she was super happy, she later started joking about how it was the wrong color. He did so much, and this is how she reacts?
Is the way my mom acts really such a normal thing in romantic relationships (or parent/child relationships, for that matter)? I’ve never been in romantic relationship, and my only other examples of romance are my aunt and uncle, who constant have screaming matches and passive aggression so obvious even I can pick up on it, and my grandparents, who were in an arranged marriage. I just don’t know who to ask.
Is it selfish if I don’t think I want to experience this? I hate my mom’s lecturing as is—sometimes it hurts bad enough to make me want to S/H. I don’t think I could take it from a romantic partner, to. Does this make me a bad person?
I don’t think that’s selfish at all, nonnie. You’re not a bad person for not wanting to put up with a potential partner who will treat you like this. In fact, I’d be concerned if you said you did want to experience something like this in a romantic relationship, because a lot of your mom’s behaviours are red flags of abuse, both toward you and your dad.
Constant lecturing and accusations, controlling and criticising everything your partner does to the point where they have to keep secrets from you to avoid your reaction, and “exploding” with minor or unimportant things and pretending like your emotions justify those explosions while also getting mad if your partner disagrees with you or expresses their emotions in any way, are all red flags of emotionally abusive behaviour. So is thinking that people should always do what you think is best for them, and getting mad when they don’t. So is badmouthing victims to one another and reacting badly if they don’t agree with you. Here’s a post I think might help better understand which of your mom’s behaviours are not okay toward either of you.
Now, regarding your doubts about what’s normal in a healthy relationship. There’s some truth in what youd dad said about all partners having flaws, although I don’t know if “flaws” is the word I’d personally use. We all have things going on in our lives; be it mental health issues, financial issues, disabilities, bad relationships with family members, or literally anything else a person can go through: questioning parts of their identity (sexuality, gender, religion...), struggling with studying and/or work, wanting to give up a bad habit... being nitpicky with food or thriving in messy spaces... There’s no such thing as a partner who won’t have something going on in their life. If you’re in a relationship there will be moments when your and their needs clash or are incompatible, and you won’t be able to be the person the other needs in that moment. And if you’re in a relationship, you’re going to have to face many of these battles together, and put effort into seeing them through as a team.
But there’s a difference between the commitment to someone else’s struggles that comes with any close (not necessarily romantic) relationship, and justifying your partner’s mistreatment toward you because “that’s just how everyone is in one way or another, so I might just as well settle for this.” That is, in fact, something many abuse victims say when their abusive partner has normalised and justified their behaviours over and over again.
I’ve been in a relationship for over six years now. That’s double the time I’ve been out of my abuser’s house and in recovery, so as you can imagine, my girlfriend has been very involved in this aspect of my life and has been there with me through many tough moments. And I’ve been there through her struggle with mental illness, too. And we were there for each other as we figured out part of our identities, and while we worried over exams, and a long list of things that have come up throughout the years and will continue to come up. And yeah, sometimes I feel really overwhelmed by the idea of cooking and she offers to do it for both of us to take care of me, and sometimes she hands me her money so I can pay for the things she wants to buy because she’s too overwhelmed to interact with strangers; and sometimes both of us are having an overwhelming day and we can’t help one another and it all sucks a bit more than usual. But we never demand that the other be there for us if the other can’t do that. We don’t demand that the other prioritise our needs to their own. And yeah, sometimes we can get angry because bad days exist and sometimes everything is too frustrating to handle; but when this happens, we just say, “hey, I’m angry/grumpy/frustrated/stressed out today, I need space or to be alone, please don’t touch me or talk to me for a while” and we establish boundaries and express our needs and emotions as openly as we can. Without being accusatory or demanding. Because you can be mad at someone, or having a bad day around someone, and still actively want to take steps to avoid hurting them. And someone can be mad at you, or having a terrible day around you, and still take steps to make you feel safe and respected.
And, nonnie, the bad days shouldn’t make you feel like you’re only staying with that person because “no one will treat me better than this”. You shouldn’t have to wonder whether the good moments make up for the bad ones, because the bad ones shouldn’t leave you feeling miserable and unsafe. You shouldn’t have to constantly worry about everything you say or do making your partner explode. It’s one thing to take your partner’s struggles and boundaries into consideration and do things that will help them feel better, and another to walk on eggshells around them for fear of their reactions. And if staying in your relationship feels like you’re “settling with one person’s flaws so you don’t have to deal with someone else’s equally bad flaws”, then chances are you’d be better off without that person in your life, because romantic relationships (which, by the way, are not a mandatory part of life whatsoever) should bring good things to your life, not feel like a task or a burden. And if they feel like that, it’s completely okay to break up, even if you have kids. Especially if you have kids that are suffering that abusive situation as well.

I know this is very nitpicky, but what do you think is the level of awareness Griffith has during the stairwell scene? For a very calculated and rational guy like him, it's hard to imagine that he hasn't even tried to decipher where these strong reckless reactions come from. I mean... even king of denial Guts has reflected a bit on it. Enough to ask Griffith about it. I know yoy mentioned in a recent answer to an ask, that you don't headcanon Griffith as pining, so would you say that you (cont)
Would you say that you imagine that he compartimentalizes his thougts and represses to the point that he doesn't aknowledge at least to a certain extent, that his feeling for Guts are more passionate, than what he feels for other comerades. The fact that he fully realises the depth of those feelings once Guts leaves is clear. But Idk the stairwell scene makes me think that he is at least aware, that he has a bit of a crush, but choses to not give it much importance. Curious about your thoughts
hmmm. okay first off I just want to say that I can see multiple possibilities, from full on repression and denial, to recognizing his attraction but not acting on it, to knowing he cares for Guts and wants him as a True Friend(TM) but often downplaying that because he believes Guts sees him mainly as a superior officer. But yeah I do prefer the denial and compartmentalization explanation and I want to go into why, because I think it’s fun to talk about lol.
So the big reason I read Griffith as refusing to acknowledge his feelings to himself is because that’s how he deals with all his other inconvenient feelings, like his guilt and fear and the fact that he cares about the Hawks. Like eg when he tells Gennon that he doesn’t feel a single emotion about him whatsoever, or when he tells Casca that he doesn’t feel guilty over the deaths of the Hawks, I don’t think he’s just lying to them, I think he’s convincing himself too, to the point where he really believes it.
It’s sort of hard to explain how I see this working in Griffith’s head bc it feels v intuitive to me but I know that’s not the case for everyone. So yk it’s not that I think he like, eg makes himself forget that he nearly had a breakdown in a river, but I think he doesn’t ask himself why he nearly had a breakdown beyond maybe a shallow ‘sex with gennon was unpleasant and made me uncomfortable for a couple hours but i’m completely fine now’ and doesn’t think about it afterwards if he can help it.
And when he tells Charlotte he doesn’t have any friends and tells Guts he belongs to him during the second duel, I think he’s telling himself lies/rationalizations he genuinely believes there too. In fact, I think his denial of his own feelings is straight up meant to be his tragic flaw, which is why he’s only able to finally acknowledge them in the torture chamber, after it’s caused his downfall.
In the torture chamber we see him remember the face-off with Zodd and acknowledge that it was an irrational thing to do and wonder why Guts is so important to him, and I think part of the reason the monologue works so well is because it’s the first time we see that kind of self-reflection sans lofty rationalization from him, because before he ended up trapped in his own brain for a year with nothing to distract himself in between bouts of torture he didn’t really ask himself these kinds of questions. If he had, things probably would’ve gone better for everyone.
And like, I don’t think this makes Griffith less intelligent, or negates his rationality in other areas of life. I don’t see a contradiction in someone being able to analyze a battlefield or read other people well but avoiding genuine soul searching whenever possible and lying to himself a lot. I think it’s actually pretty realistic - I don’t think very many people fully understand themselves or their feelings, even really self-reflective people, and it’s very easy to rationalize away inconvenient cognitive dissonance. and I include myself in that lol.
Griffith’s life is kind of a contradiction that would really fuck him up to untangle (he sends people to their deaths to achieve a dream for the sake of assuaging his guilt for sending people to their deaths to achieve a dream), so he doesn’t try to untangle it, he avoids the question and hides behind a philosophical ideal. And his feelings for Guts add to that cognitive dissonance because if he values Guts over the dream, that kind of proves his entire defensive life philosophy is bullshit and his whole life plan is built on a precarious house of cards, so it makes sense to me that he’d avoid examining those feelings closely too.
And you can look at Guts too, who does navelgaze a lot and tries to analyze his own feelings and motivations - when he’s faced with a contradiction (I want to become independent of Griffith and do my own thing solely to gain Griffith’s approval) he actually notices it and briefly questions himself... and then he still puts it out of his mind and continues pursuing his contradictory goal anyway, and manages to stay in denial for 3 days even after learning that Griffith ended up in a torture chamber because he left.
Along those same lines, Guts eg realizes that he kills things because it makes him feel better but he doesn’t make the connection between his irrational urge to fight powerful enemies and his childhood trauma the way the readers can, the King didn’t acknowledge his incesty feelings til Griffith shoved them in his face, Count Slug kept denying having human feelings til Puck went on a tirade against him and he couldn’t sacrifice his daughter, Casca lies to herself about her feelings for Griffith for a long time before finally acknowledging she’s in love and then doubles down on her Griffith feelings when her newer feelings for Guts threaten them until she has a breakdown and admits some things to herself (I mean I find that last one disappointing lol, but it’s also a really straightforward example of someone living in denial of romantic feelings and therefore a good comparison point to show that Miura does this on purpose), etc. So I think this interpretation of Griffith is also consistent with how Miura just like, tends to write people.
Like imo Griffith has moments where he comes close to self awareness and could’ve started potentially reflecting on his feelings and coming to better, more accurate conclusions, and those moments definitely include the Zodd conversation (as well as the river scene with Casca, and “do you think I’m cruel?”) but none of those scenes lead to useful self-reflection because they all go wrong. Casca tries but fails to reassure him bc she’s out of her depth, Guts reminds him of his dream, the King interrupts their conversation and Charlotte reorients Griffith towards his goal so he can move on from that moment of irrationality and refrain from thinking about it further for a while. Even after the duel Griffith tries to avoid self-reflection by fucking Charlotte imo (”take all the sad and frightening things and cast them into the fire” ie hey girl wanna repress some shit w/ me?), and imo his previous ability to do that makes it all the more impactful when it doesn’t work this time and he breaks down.
BUT YEAH all that said I don’t think this is the only reasonable reading of Griffith’s awareness of his feelings lol, it’s just the one I like best and consider the most satisfying and interesting and fun to think about. And honestly that’s partly because I love dramatic irony and have a real thing for characters who lie to themselves, so I’m biased in favour of it too. Nothing about Griffith being good at denial contradicts the idea that he could still be aware of an attraction to Guts (in that case he’d probably just write it off as irrelevant and deny the associated internalized-homophobia-related self-loathing lol until it all pours out while he’s projecting at the King), and he could eg be aware that he irrationally cares about Guts above and beyond anyone else and just doesn’t even try to reconcile that with his dream, ie compartmentalization in another way.
But I think the idea that he only fully admits it to himself in the torture chamber is just very narratively satisfying.

What I don't agree with, is that Andie or Joey "changed" Pacey.
I agree with you, I used the term “changed” because that’s how Pacey/the writers describe it. What I mean is Andie and Pacey pushed eachother to grow and evolve.
Joey and Pacey were enemies to lovers.
Pandie and PJ both had “I hate you but I love you” dynamic.
Pacey: You, Andie McPhee are the girl, I love to hate
Andie: I love to hate you too, Pacey
Pacey: you love me
Joey: you bug me
while Andie opened up a side to Pacey that kick started his journey... Joey was always the woman out of his league. There were hints all the way back to season 1 that Pacey held Joey in high regards and never in a million years believed "someone like her" would look to a guy like him.
While I do think Joey was out of Pacey’s league, many girls were out of Pacey’s league, including Andie. Pacey even tells Andie “I can’t fathom why a woman like you would be into a guy like me.” Christie was also a woman Pacey considered to be out of his league because she was popular and attractive.
I think this is Joey being out of Pacey’s league is part of the reason people root for them so hard, at least it’s why I did (it helps that they have great chemistry). It was about the underdog, getting the girl. Now, I prefer Pandie because I think they’re written better.
Joey was really the Audrey Hepburn of the girls. The smart, beautiful, classy girl next door that just made boys swoon. Just the simple fact that Joey wanted to be with Pacey made him want to step up and be the better man, to be the man Pacey believed Joey deserved.
The show certainly positions Joey as the Audrey Hepburn. Everyone makes grand speeches about Joey. Audrey says Joey is the kind of girl guys never get over, the type of girl other girls want to be. Pacey talks about Joey being an inspiration to men and claims she’s his “most amazing relationship”, etc. This narrative feels is inflated through the dialogue and feels unearned. Although Joey certainly has moments when she challenges men, her influence on them isn’t as profound as the show wants us to believe. Pacey doesn’t evolve or grow while dating Joey (unlike S2, when he is dating Andie) and we don’t see why she is better than other girls. It’s annoying that she is positioned as the source of Dawson and Pacey’s inspiration when they were able to have more functional relationships with other women.
And Joey were also wrong for how she handled a lot of the drama between all of them.
I agree. In fact, during the college years I think she was the problematic one when it comes to her dynamics with Dawson and Pacey. But when it comes to PJs demise in S4, they’re both to blame.
Pacey told Joey in the finale that he was ok with loving her from a distance because he was done being unhappy and he was finally ready to love himself. It wasn't about gaining her. It was about gaining himself.
Most of the show, Pacey (like Dawson) put Joey on a pedestal. After the 5 year time jump they were still in love with Joey, or rather in love with an idealized version of her. It would when been great if we were able to see Pacey’s growth instead of hearing him make a speech. This is nitpicky but it’s annoying that his speeches are always directed at women (“you can’t keep doing this to me, Jo” “you’ve wrecked me”, “this is about you, and how you make me feel”, “you’re off the hook”).
Yeah, I agree. I think at the end of the day though, the writers put Joey on a padestal and she had to be "the Audrey Hepburn" character to sell the love triangle. She needed to be "special" to justify a love triangle that existed for half of these characters' lives and entire show. These two guys needed to love this woman so much, she must be really special.
But the thing is, she was just a normal girl to everyone else. She was a normal woman to me, I didn't think there was something out of this world about her. But clearly to Dawson and Pacey, she's the love of both their lives.
And I think the fan reaction to Pacey and Joey was just too strong to ignore. Pacey and Andie didn't have that IT factor. Pacey, the underdog guy from the wrong side of town, falls in love with Joey, Audrey Hepburn next door who was out of his league (Pacey literally called her that).
Joey: You're grinning like an idiot...
Pacey: Yeah I know, I can't help it.
Joey: Why?
Pacey: Because.. I'm the only guy at this party who gets to walk in with Audrey Hepburn on his arm.
Lol, they weren't being subtle.
The chemisty was fire. It was a slow burn drawn out several seasons. And it also provided for the big "two best friends/brothers love the same woman" story. How Shakespearean of them, lol.
I think Pacey and Joey being endgame is the result of what chemistry, connection and having the "IT" factor can do. They literally changed the entire story and transformed the endgame because their undeniable chemistry and draw. Even if Pacey had a good relationship with Andie and it was a helpful relationship to them both, I think we can all agree that Pacey and Joey is what makes TV work and why some ships just have IT.

I had Daniela explicitly guilt Alberto into helping to fill the Luca-shaped hole in the Paguros' lives in my long fic. I also think that having a kid around that she's explicitly not responsible for would help temper Daniela somewhat; Alberto's not her kid, so she doesn't get so wound up. And unlike Massimo, Daniela wouldn't be quiet about her expectations or opinions. Gah, now I want to write a one-shot of *just* Alberto and Daniela and see where that takes me.

Also yeah, can definitely see her holding Alberto and Luca to different standards, which drives Luca fucking crazy (especially when he feels like his mom only sees his mistakes, both because negativity naturally stands out more in your memory and because she can be very nitpicky about Luca's appearance/behavior, whereas she's so used to him being a good kid that she doesn't give Luca the full emotional reaction he wants when he tells her about making honor roll or joining a science club) (she is proud of him, but her actual reaction is rather quick because she kind of just expects him to know she's proud of him).

Contagious Affection - Riku x Reader
Oh my gods! I’m so sorry this took so long! Life’s been crazy, you know, but I’ve been thinking about it ever since you asked. Thankfully, things are gonna slow down for me soon and I can focus more on what I love: writing.

“Riku! Stop!”
The perpetrator freezes, shock across his face and a fist against his eye. Huffing, I slap his hand down and proceed to clean it with a wet wipe.
“Ugh, this sucks,” he grumbles, blinking awkwardly to relieve his clearly irritated eyes.
“Yes, but if you don’t keep your hands away from your face, you’re gonna make it worse and get your germs everywhere.” I point a finger at him. “And if you give me pink eye, I’m gonna make you miserable.”
Threats bounce off his resilience. “With you around, I don’t know if that’s possible.”
“Shush! No amount of smooth talk will soothe my rage if I get infected! Got it?!”
“Yeah yeah,” he says, clearly not taking me seriously.
“Good. Now go take everything off the bed so I can wash it.”
That saps his pleasantness. “Don’t you think you’re going a little overboard with this?”
“Listen, I’ve had pink eye before—it ain’t fun. I do not want it again and if all this seems excessive, it’s only because sometimes you have trouble following the really simple instructions such as STOP TOUCHING YOUR EYES!”
His hand instantly drops as he realizes what he’s doing. “Oh…”
A stern point directs him to the bottle of sanitizer on the nightstand. I’m not quite exasperated with the boy, but I will be thoroughly annoyed if I get pink eye because he can’t restrain himself.
Riku begins pulling the bed apart and I amble into the hall for clean linen. As I’m digging through the closet, the doorbell rings. Lo and behold, we have unexpected guests in Riku’s closest friends.
“Hey,” Sora greets with a beaming grin.
Kairi waves. “Hi.”
The answer is pretty much guaranteed but it’s only polite to ask. “Hey guys. What’s up?”
“Is Riku around? He promised to show us one of his master techniques he came up with,” the red-head answers.
“I’m sorry, but Riku really shouldn’t hang out today. He’s got pink eye.”
The last thing I expected from his two best friends is that they would light up at the news of Riku having a contagious infection.
“Really?!” Sora exclaims. “His eyes are pink?!”
No politeness is offered as the pair bustles past me. I close the door, a bit perturbed, and scurry after the two who have ambushed my inflicted boyfriend in the bedroom.
“Woah! Hey! What the hell?!”
“C’mon! Lemme see!” Sora demands, practically scaling the taller boy while Kairi watches expectantly.
“Sora! Get off!”
That’s when I see the hands reaching for Riku’s face.
Snatching the back of his jacket, I tear Sora off and put myself between the sick and the visiting. “Woah woah woah! What are you doing?!”
“We just wanna see!”
Kairi puts in her defense. “Yeah. I haven’t seen his eyes change colors yet.”
It hits me what they’re thinking. “Riku doesn’t have pink eyes!” I exclaim. “He has pink eye! And he’s still contagious! Go wash your hands!”
The girl’s eyes widen as she comprehends but Sora is still clearly confused. “He what?”
I throw a finger in Riku’s direction. “Look at him! His eyes are still green; the pink is on the outside! He’s sick and you were touching his face! You’re gonna get sick if you don’t go wash your hands now!”
“You better do as they say,” warns Riku. “They’ve been disinfecting everything and threatened to tie me to a chair at least twice.”
Finally, Sora hurries off to the bathroom and Kairi asks, “Isn’t pink eye pretty mild?”
“Usually, but I had a pretty bad infection when I was little and I do not want to do that again,” I explain. “It doesn’t help that Riku keeps forgetting not to touch his face every five minutes.”
His eyes roll at my complaints and a hand instinctively reaches up to alleviate the resulting irritation. It barely takes any thought to swatting his hand.
“If I somehow make it through the next few weeks without getting it, it’ll be a miracle.”
“You’re just being dramatic,” Riku reprimands.
“No, you’re being careless,” I retort, resuming his half-finished assignment of pulling off the sheets and blankets.
Kairi and Sora visit for a while, frequently forgetting that Riku is contagious until firmly reminded. On the bright side, despite his irritation, Riku doesn’t seem all that put out by his infection—I’d hate to see him truly under the weather.
Bidding farewell, the guests take their leave and I close the door behind them.
“Those two will have pink eye this time tomorrow,” I mumble.
Riku agrees, “Probably—Sora touched his face like half a dozen times in the last hour.” Returning my full focus to the job of cleaning the apartment, I stroll towards the kitchen. “What are you doing now?”
“I gotta make dinner. But I’m gonna be lazy and just do mac and cheese.”
A grip on my shoulder pulls me around so he can lead back towards the sofa. “Will you slow down for a moment. You’ve been going non-stop since we got back from the clinic. Take a break.”
He’s right but while I want to just collapse and spend some time with the sickie, there’s a lot to clean to make sure the contagions don’t spread. “Riku…”
“Nope.” One more nudge puts me on the couch. “Relax. No one’s going to die, or get sick, if you take a break for ten minutes.”
Attempting to thwart his task is a beeping alarm. “And that’s the laundry.”
“If I go switch it over now, will you just sit with me for a bit?” My sigh of defeat is taken as an answer and he leaves to throw the clothes in the dryer before coming back to flop beside me. In an effort to distract me, his hands play with my fingers as we chat. It’s the most peace I’ve had since waking up to the invasive illness.
Honestly, Riku’s always been the laid back one in our relationship, versus my nitpickiness; he can roll with life’s surprises better than I can. The boy wasn’t even going to go to the clinic until I practically shoved him out the door. And though sometimes this indifference can get irritating, he’s always been a pro at keeping me from going overboard and drowning myself in self-imposed responsibilities. In the same vein, I tend to keep things a bit more orderly around here. It’s not that he’s a slob or anything but—as evident with this pink eye—some things just get away from him.
“Alright, now I really should go start dinner,” I hum. An annoying buzz sounds. “Is that the dryer?” I glance to the clock before swiping at Riku. “That was way longer than ten minutes!”
“Whoops,” he chuckles, not the least bit fazed by my attack.
“You’re terrible. How I get anything done with you around is beyond me.”
“Because you’re amazing.”
“Don’t try to butter me up,” I scoff. When he simply smiles, the reality of how hectic I’ve been today begins to set in. A soft laugh escapes me. “Geeze, how do you put up with me?”
That grin softens, becoming the embodiment of admiration; it nearly entices me to forgo dinner to indulge in his company.
That comfort falters when a ring of magenta sparks in his eyes, swallowing the teal color until all that’s left behind is that vibrant shock.
“Because I love you,” he hums.
First off, neither of us have come up with the courage to say that yet and I know I should be over the moon with delight, but I’ve never seen anything like this before so all I can do is stare. This is not the reaction he was expecting, though, and that soft happiness vanishes.
“Oh my gods! Was that too soon?! You don’t have to say it back! I—”
“Your eyes are pink!” I manage to blurt out.
It’s his turn to stare. “Yyyyeah…I have pink eye.”
“No! They aren’t green anymore—they’re pink!”
The blush flushing over his face nearly matches the color of his eyes. “O-Oh…”
“I’ve never seen this before!” I push off the sofa. “I better call the doctor and—”
Riku’s hand snatches my wrist. Looking back, I find him wearing that same warm smile—that magenta shade undulating brighter. “It’s okay; it’s a dream eater thing.”
This is where he has to explain to me what a dream eater is, how he ended up becoming one, and that his eyes occasionally change color depending on his emotions.
“Is this what those two were talking about when they wanted to see your pink eyes?” I ask after.
“Yeah.”
“Oh thank gods—I was really worried about their sanity for a moment.”
“You should still be worried,” the young man teases.
We share a laugh but as I watch him, I can’t help noticing the brightness in his eyes. “So, if the color depends on your mood, what does pink mean?”
I half expected the guy to break out in another full blush, but instead it only accents his cheeks as he smirks. “I know you’re smart enough to figure it out.”
I’d kiss him if I wasn’t afraid of his pink eye, the sickness not the eye color. Still, I follow his lead: “I love you too.”

The next day…
“I told you guys if you weren’t careful you were gonna get it too,” I scold, smacking Sora’s hand from his face with a wet wipe. “Stop touching your eyes!”
He complains, “But it itches!”
“I don’t care!” I snap, turning my glare on Kairi who’s halfway to rubbing her eyes. “If you don’t stop, I’m gonna put eye patches on both of you and tie you to chairs!”
“They’re not joking,” Riku adds, giving me the side eye. “I was stuck at the kitchen table for three hours this morning.”
“See? Don’t tempt me,” I say, eyeing the sulking pair. I swear, getting these two to resist the urge to rub their eyes is worse than keeping the seagulls at the pier away from food.
When there are no more complaints, I stalk into the kitchen to start dinner, of which I now have to make extra.
“Thanks for taking care of them,” Riku hums, having followed.
“It’s fine. We knew they were gonna catch it,” I reply, washing potatoes in the sink. A little simper takes over. “But they aren’t gonna tell me they love me and get glowing eyes too, are they?”
“No,” he sighs. “Just me.”
“Just for me?” I coo.
Riku chuckles. “Just for you.”
Putting aside the food, I tug at his shirt. “Say it.” I’ve made this demand a few times already so it’s no wonder he just laughs. “Come on, please. Say it!”
I could fly our whole apartment building with the butterflies raging in my stomach at the sight of that fuchsia flash. With absolute adoration, he snakes his arms around my waist and nuzzles against my nose.
“I love you.”
Delighted, I bury my face in his chest, squeezing as tight as I can. His chin nudging against my forehead makes me look back.
“Your turn now,” he insists.
Without hesitation and knowing that I one hundred percent mean it, I respond, “I love you too.”
“Good, because now you’re probably gonna get pink eye,” he snickers, indicating our close proximity.
“Shit!”

my long ass review for S32E03 Now Museum, Now You Don’t
warning: LONG because i rambled about history more than i thought i would
id been looking forward to this one because i like art history, especially after seeing how they tried their best to stick to historical accuracy in the previous episode I, Carumbus. this time however….they didnt try that hard. i dont know why i thought theyd go through that sort of trouble again LMAO
but its okay, i dont really expect the simpsons to be the paragon of historical accuracy or anything. especially in anthology episodes told through a particular character's lens (in this case, lisa, whos already feverish so whatever)
first i just wanna say that this is, i guess, less of a review and more of an accidental list of history fun facts. so im just gonna get my general thoughts out of the way first.
the episode was fun! to me at least haha. i mean it got me to think and do a lot of research on my own so that must count for something. besides a couple of really weird ones, the jokes were good. anthology episodes tend to be….not that good but i thought this one was one of the better ones so far. idk.
anyway on to lisanardo da vinky
its the renaissance! jesus christ the italian accents in the beginning of this segment were annoying as hell but i also feel like that was the joke lmao. ill be real i kind of tuned out for a second there when grampa started rambling so idk what he said.
i told myself i wouldnt get nitpicky with historical accuracy if the jokes were funny (final edit: so that was a lie) but this meh bit with the pizza guys and mascots was really not worth ignoring the fact that its impossible for italy to have any tomato-based food in the 15th century (tomatoes were brought to europe from the americas in the 16th century, and pizza as we know it today—flatbread, cheese, tomato—originated in the late 18th century)
oh this next part was kind of legit tho. lisanardo, like the real leonardo, became andrea del verrochio's apprentice at his workshop. i loved this next bit:
"Whoever paints the sweetest cherub will have the honor of having MY name signed on their work. That's what great artists do!"
SO YEAH as it turns out, lisanardo painted the sweetest cherubs. the painting here is called The Baptism of Christ, and the real leonardo assisted verrochio in finishing it. specifically, he painted the cherubs in the corner.
this causes verrochio to quit and go someplace with less talented people: a music school (yes, verrochio did quit painting after getting owned by young leo and his mad angel painting skills. he never did anything with music tho, he was more of a sculptor)
alongside lisanardo, in mr largo-verrochio's workshop we have barticelli (botticelli bart), dolphatello (donatello dolph), ralphael (raphael...ralph) and mediocrito (no one that i know of. sorry milhouse) (and kearney i guess but they dont refer to him by name). botticelli and donatello are said to have also been apprentices at verrochio's workshop, but raphael came a couple of decades later so he couldnt have been there. and donatello was too old so that claim is a bit questionable. but anyway
it IS true that leonardo's peers envied him, to the point where he was anonymously and purposefully accused of being gay (a major crime punishable by death in 15th century florence) while he was still working at verrochio's workshop
we are then treated by what im pretty sure is the fourth time the show has used 'at seventeen' by janis ian, this time sung by a dejected lisanardo (man they really do keep making yeardley sing these days huh) who only wishes to be appreciated and not envied.
"I'll show them all! I'll show them all in a secret diary that no one will decipher for 400 years!"
some of lisanardo's future inventions. who wouldve known
so after barticelli, for some reason (revenge??? or something?? what was his plan here idgi) steals lisanardo's diaries full of blueprints of her inventions and takes them to mr burns who i have to assume is pope alexander VI here, they decide to use her inventions for war.
"With these, we can kill the most evil people in the world!! ....Slightly different Christians."
leo actually did this of his own accord. im surprised this is what they decided to do with lisanardo instead of talking about leo's love of nature and vegetarianism (not a single mention of that in this episode? come on...) then again, trying to do good only to end up indirectly making things worse is a very standard lisa storyline. i guess they didnt want to miss the chance to have evil pope burns (very fitting, especially for that era since they were all about money and controlling the people)
so lisanardo decides to leave for france, unlike the real leonardo who was more or less persuaded by his ultimate fanboy king francis I to move to france.
"Lisanardo, I have many questions. Why are you hitting yourself? A nerd says 'what'? And how is it possible that I am rubber and you are glue? Et cetera, et cetera."
that line may seem a little random, like hes just nelson saying nelson things (and i mean, obviously he is) but the real francis also "had an unquenchable thirst for learning, and Leonardo was the world’s best source of experimental knowledge. He could teach the king about almost any subject there was to know, from how the eye works to why the moon shines." so yeah, he did have many questions and lisanardo, finally being appreciated for her intellect, was happy to answer them all. its very interesting how lisa assigned this role to nelson in her retelling of da vinci’s life :^)
and so she lived the rest of her days in france, nat king cole's 'mona lisa' plays because duh, and they make a da vinci code reference because duh. and the segment ends. and not a single time did they show the actual mona lisa painting. the fuck?
(ngl i was fully expecting bart to say 'leonardo da vinky' for a second here)
so this next segment is about french impressionist painters, most likely the batignolles group, a name adopted by the early representatives of impressionism. its much more vague than the lisanardo segment since no one here is referred to by name (except moe, more on him in a sec) but i dont feel like it really matters in this case. bart is prrrrooobably claude monet but its hard to say, this segment is kind of a mish-mash of a lot of things.
also i gotta say i really liked how lisa introduced the story to bart with an 'if you hate the formal study of art' and not 'if you hate art' because thats exactly my headcanon. i LOVE the concept of artist bart and whenever its referenced it just makes perfect sense to me.
anyway the segment opens in 1863 at the école des beaux-arts (back then it was actually known as the académie des beaux-arts), preserver of traditional french art styles. skinner reviews his students’ paintings one by one. praises the plain, unimaginative paintings depicting your typical european countryside landscapes. very run-of-the-mill (haha get it...cuz theres….a windmill) (although the real académie didnt approve of such basic stuff, they wanted artists to draw epic historical and mythological scenes)
then he gets to barts painting and he gives him an F- because the painting made him think.
(the paintings in this scene arent real famous paintings as far as i know but they are inspired by real paintings enough to get the point across)
in comes barney dressed as bacchus as a model for the students to sketch, which i just loved:
barney: “You prefer robe open or robe off?”
skinner: “Just cover your privates with this walnut shell.”
barney: “Whoa!!! So roomy!”
skinner gasps in horror at bart’s sketch, which “looks nothing like him” and bart explains that “it shouldn’t; we’re making the art that we feel because we can’t compete with a camera.” damn, you go bart. take that, realism. draw what you feel!!
(also no, you didnt need to hold still for 17 hours for a daguerreotype. 30 min tops.)
nelson haw-haw of the week: FOIE-gras!
so here they are at the moulin rouge (“enjoy it before baz luhrmann ruins it” hey shut up. i love that movie), which wouldnt be built for another 26 years, but it is the most widely known gathering place for bohemians in the public consciousness so i can understand why they went with the moulin. nelson delivers this anachronistic line:
“This époque keeps getting beller and beller!”
which alludes to la belle époque, the golden age of france usually dated from 1880 to 1914. made me snort so ill let that slide
and heres moe! as henri de toulouse-lautrec, who was actually born a year after the year this segment is set in. yo moe szyslak he was just 1
toulouse-moetrec introduces himself as the chronicler of the demimonde (not an actual job). an iconic figure associated with the moulin rouge (largely due to his affinity for alcohol and prostitutes), toulouse-lautrec was also a painter, having illustrated a series of posters for the moulin himself. he simply had to be in this segment, anachronisms be damned, just because they decided to include the moulin. cant have one without the other.
and yes he did have a walking cane where he kept his liquor.
i love how everyone drinks absinthe in this place. theyre bohemians what else would they drink
toulouse-moetrec points out that barts paintings are the greatest thing hes ever seen (and hes seen like five things!) and that hes a genius. milhouse realizes that they should stop doing what the teacher says and use their own minds to instead...start doing what bart says lmao. to the easels!
next we have skinner hyping up chalmers about the art his students made for the salon de paris, an art exhibition that the emperor of france will attend. he assures him that none of these paintings will encourage debate, provoke thought or be out of place at a dentist’s office. when they unveil the art, theyre both SHOCKED at how scandalous the paintings actually are.
this reaction was kind of accurate. impressionism was severely rejected at the salon de paris, due to paintings not looking finished enough to them, they thought they were ugly and vulgar for depicting nudity in a contemporary setting (historical and mythological nudity was fine). these impressionist paintings were sent to the salon de refusés, which is. yeah. the place where they sent the rejects. the salon de refusés does not make an appearance but this scene makes a reference to it when the artists get expelled from the royal salon. also:
“What about our student loans?”
“Oh they’ll be refunded. We are not barbarians, I mean, come on.”

so the painters are down because they want the emperor to actually see their paintings. toulouse-moetrec pipes in once again with an idea.
“There is one thing the emperor loves more than anything.”
“France?”
“No, he hates France.”
apparently the emperor really loves cheese, which makes sense since its napoleon III (who loved cheese) and homer (who loves cheese.) so the painters roll into the salon inside a giant wheel of cheese (obviously.) as lenny said, “Eh, you know French cheese. Very runny.” napoleon III chases after the wheel into a room, where the wheel falls apart after getting chomped on by the emperor. now that they got his attention, the painters proudly show the emperor their impressionist art, which he couldnt be more indifferent about because he just wants to eat his cheese dammit, and he awards them with the royal medallion just to kind of get them out of his way. skinner immediately starts kissing ass (as he does) until marge’s like ‘hey wait a minute. you expelled these students from the royal salon’ and an executioner immediately starts ominously measuring skinners neck.
“Uh, sir...is your tongue sticking out because you’re dead or because you’re mad at me?”
and thats the end of that lmao (gore in this episode, gore in the last episode, and next week we’re getting gore too cuz its THOH, what the hell is goin on)
we get a short intermission with maggie, who wants a story for her too! lisa tells her that renaissance artists loved to put babies in their paintings, especially baby angels.

not much else to say about this one, really. but i really liked that sky!
the last segment is about frida kahlo and diego rivera. or as bart puts it ‘the one about a fat guy whos wife is too good for him.’ i was REALLY looking forward to this one because i love frida and i thought itd be a cool opportunity for animators to go bonkers and do really cool shit with her art as inspiration…..but the segment is not about frida, its about diego and his selling out to capitalism. and its also yet another story with homer and marge drama. no funky cool animation here. sigh i guess i’ll take it
the story begins in 1929 at la casa azul, frida’s home (now museum dedicated to her life and work.) frida and diego are getting married. this courtyard definitely did not look this way yet back in 1929. also theres something very cringy yet funny about lovejoy saying spanish words the way he does, i honestly cant decide how i feel about that one
the writers know theyre being cringy with their gringoness so they go along with it.
moe: “Spanish for ‘best wishes’!”
mel: “Spanish for ‘congratulations’!”
bumblebee man: “Spanish for ‘muy bueno’!”
OH YEAH BUMBLEBEE MAN this is his new voice actor, eric lopez! hes not mexican but its still great to finally have a latino actor voicing a latino character and hes very excited to be part of the show so i hope to hear more of him!! im rooting for him
el barto/zorro makes an appearance which i am very confused about. he has jack shit to do with frida and diego and mexico in the 20s-30s. el zorro was set in the spanish california of the early 19th century. their use of the original theme song makes me think they just wanted to flex their disney privileges tbh
lets not talk about that that whole scene was bad
anyway diego announces he and frida are going to new york, without even asking her first. frida is obviously pissed.
“Don’t worry, as a woman, you’ll be treated with much more respect in America.”
so in new york, diego is having a bit of a business meeting with mr burns as one of the members of the rockefellers, who is commissioning him to draw a mural for the rockefeller center. its kinda funny how he refers to him and frida as socialists even though they were very much communists lmao its okay you can say it. ok so far, but then frida says ‘yes, we hate the capitalists! right now, a young socialist is being born who will take them down! mr. bernie sanders. i hope hes quick about it’ and that was a simple enough joke and couldve been left at that but then its immediately followed by this weird as fuck family guy-esque cutaway gag to bernie as a baby:
“Getting a cootie shot should not cost your lunch money. And if you don’t listen to me, listen to the Bernie Babies! What? Everybody’s got goons.” *larger babies start beating up this other baby* “I disavow that, and welcome it.”
this confused me so much that i had to ask one of my american friends to help me understand, but even she was like ‘uhhh yeah thats a weird joke,’ especially now that hes been out of the race for months (then again these episodes take almost a year to produce. i guess they couldnt be bothered to replace it with something more relevant.) whatever that was weird and confusing and unfunny moving on
frida is pretty irked that diego is going through with this deal. after all, it goes against everything they believe in. im not sure how the real frida felt about diego doing the mural, but she did feel a bit of rage during her visit to the united states, especially the obvious disparity between rich and poor. she hated having to interact with capitalists and found americans very boring. in this segment, frida seems to be acting more like the american communist party, which diego got kicked out of for accepting commissions from wealthy patrons. in any case, frida is pretty upset about this whole thing.
and finally we get the first and only kind of surreal frida moment. kinda. maybe. its more cartoonish than anything but im desperate ok
interesting how they felt like they had to add a “don’t smoke” in big letters after showing patty and selma flying away on their giant cigarettes. i wonder if this is something theyre making them do now? i remember hearing something about them toning down patty and selma’s smoking
diego comes home to frida, drunk as hell, followed by the marx brothers. i cant believe they didnt make a marxism joke come on it was RIGHT THERE. THE MARX BROTHERS. KARL MARX. COME ON
frida paints her feelings.
this makes diego realize that frida is a genius and he is not half the artist she is. he proclaims he will now show his awe of her by sleeping with other women, starting “an hour ago.” to which frida replies, “and i will start sleeping with other women, starting two hours ago.” yes this was pretty much their relationship. though im just wondering how the hell did diego not know frida was this kind of artist until now? i know homers an idiot but jeez. art was how frida and diego met, diego knew from the get-go that frida was an incredible artist. i guess the fame got to his head or something. again, homer just being stupid.
“well enough already, while the art is still deco, okay?”
its time for the mural diego painted, Man At The Crossroads, to be unveiled:
rockefeller examines it. good and great so far, and then...uh oh
“Who’s that fellow…? With the beard, and the bolshevik smile…”
“That’s the founder of Soviet Russia, Lenin!”
“B-b-but he’s a communist!”
“Oh he just attended a couple of meetings.”
rockefeller will not have this communist in the temple to capitalism that is the rockefeller center, so he orders diego to paint over it. diego stands his ground and refuses. despite rockefeller’s threats, diego says that theres only one person he wants to be proud of him no matter what and in true homer & marge fashion, frida is touched by this. they happily leave the rockefeller center.
now, the real story of Man At The Crossroads and the rockefeller center was actually not that different. as soon as the rockefellers found out diego had snuck in a portrait of lenin into the mural, they ordered him to paint over it, to which he refused. diego even offered to include abraham lincoln and even american abolitionists in the mural as a compromise, but the rockefellers simply did not want any references to communism whatsoever. they did not complain about the hammer and sickle, though. yes, they did know diego was a communist and hired him anyway. what did they expect? lmao. diego said:
"Rather than mutilate the conception [of the mural], I shall prefer the physical destruction of the conception in its entirety, but preserving, at least, its integrity."
so they decided to destroy the mural before it was even finished and they never talked to each other again.
diego then repainted the mural at the palacio de bellas artes back in mexico, this time known as Man, Controller of the Universe. this new version included even more communist leaders and a depiction of john d. rockefeller jr. drinking at a nightclub, right underneath a depiction of syphilis bacteria. cue nelson haw-haw:
this was the version they used in the episode also, since the original was, well, never finished and also destroyed. only a black and white photograph of it exists, taken by diego before it was destroyed so he could remake it.
right so, homer!diego then pulls a Barthood and finishes the episode with a large mural summarizing the entire episode. he says some rick and morty thing i didnt get because i dont watch the show idk idc
