At Wangji’s side, Wei Wuxian has run out of patience. Wangji feels it in the shift of his husband’s stance, and squeezes Wei Wuxian’s hand. If the sect leaders are going to be deliberately obtuse, well then Wei Wuxian has never been one to pull his punches. Wangji should know. “You wanted to speak to the Yiling Laozu,” Wei Wuxian says, “so speak.” It takes them by the throat. Wangji looks at a fixed point ahead, but he still sees the statement ripple through the gathered clans, sees a few of them choke. Sees the smarter ones put one and two together to make three, connecting the young cultivator who had razed the fields of Qishan, laying waste to the Wen army, to the young man who had stood defiant in front of Jin Guangshan in his own palace, to the protector of the Wen remnants, to the thing that had settled in the Yiling Burial Mounds. Yiling Laozu. Yiling Laozu wed to Hanguang-Jun. (Wangji shouldn’t smile but he thinks the one to make it to Qi deviation first is Lan Qiren).

Ah, hostage?” Wei Wuxian says. “I don’t hold anyone hostage, least of all children. The boys can go wherever they please.” This is met with great disbelief, as if they can’t see with their own two eyes that the children aren’t restrained. A-Yuan is starting to feel upset, if the way he clings to Wei Wuxian is any indication, his bottom lip wobbling in a manner he has definitely learnt from A-Yu. The only thing that keeps him from crying is the gentle whispers from Wei Wuxian telling him he is being very good, and that he’ll only have to be good a little longer. “Jin Xuanyu, come to your father,” Jin Guangshan says, smiling like a reptile. Wangji almost laughs at the mere idea of it, that Jin Guangshan has ever been a father. Jin Zixuan looks uncomfortable enough at the idea, throwing a disparaging look at the man who had sired him, as if to say that Jin Guangshan has never been a father to anyone. “A-Yu,” Wei Wuxian says quietly but clearly, “go to your father.” This, too is met with silence. Wangji feels A-Yu shift against his leg as if having decided not to hide anymore, and his eyes widen when the child tugs at his sleeve. A-Yu says, “Baba, up!” It’s purely on reflex that he lifts A-Yu into his arms, the weight familiar. A-Yu, still shy and nervous, buries his face in Wangji’s neck. It’s where he’s most comfortable, and Wangji can’t help but settle a protective hand against A-Yu’s back. The gathered sect leaders and their disciples watch this whole thing, too stunned to even speak or protest. “Well,” Wei Wuxian says cheerfully. It masks his surprise well, but Wangji had seen a flash of it. “That’s clear then. Let it be known that this is not Jin Xuanyu. It cannot be anyway, since I gave birth to this child and no one’s laid a hand on me except for Hanguang-Jun.” Wangji says nothing, not a word. His ears grow hot, but his expression remains completely smooth. He had done more, much more, than simply lay hands on Wei Wuxian, but that is something no one else is privy to.

Y'know what? Ptm Jade not only gives Cecil vibes but also gives me Lan Wangji vibes. (From Mo Dao Zu Shi/ The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) He's super terrible at expressing his feelings and can't say what he means for the life of him most the times but especially when he was younger. He only acts bolder when he drinks he's that bad 😭 Lan Wangji just reminds me of that moment when Jade wanted to invite Yuu with him but froze up on the way out of Octavinelle. Just nervous and clumsy in execution of what they want. The difference is the mind reading so Yuu at least knows Jade has romantic interest in them

Oh idk who that or that show(?) is, but that matches up very well with PTM Jade. It's hard to imagine Jade, even if he was more confident, being upfront with his feelings. Everything he does and says is deliberate to garner a specific reaction that he'd like from people.
In PTM, this is combated by Yuu being able to read his thoughts and do the opposite of what he expects. It's a surprise, is carefully crafted persona, mannerisms, and words no longer do what he expects. The differences between what would be canon Jade and PTM Jade (who is canon in my heart/j) is that in PTM he copes by imagining, nearly deluding himself, that Yuu's actions have a double meaning as well. They're just shy or just being sweet, there's no way they are avoiding him or getting the ick.
In his head, they're just like him: using a persona to protect themselves. It's also probably why his fantasies are so vivid and wild, Jade knows deep down that there are no double-meanings behind their actions, that they are in fact not secretly in love with him and too shy to confess. In his heart, the fact it cannot take is that Yuu does not (yet) feel the same. So he copes, by imagining a world in which they do.

He was forced to bury not only his son, but his husband as well. Sizhui's Wen heritage had been discovered and Wei Wuxian's past had once again inspired animosity. While Sizhui would hopefully find peace at least, Wei Wuxian's soul had been destroyed and Lan Wangji would rather destroy his own soul than never be re-united with Wei Wuxian again. However, his late husband had left him one last gift: a path into a different universe. Or: MDZS!Lan Wangji transmigrates into the CQL-verse just in time to save post-canon CQL!Wei Wuxian. Together, they grieve and eventually, they find a home for themselves.

The symbolic meaning behind A-Yuan's butterfly toys

There is such a beautifully poignant moment during the Yiling date chapter, where A-Yuan is playing with the two grass butterflies that LWJ bought him. The minute I read it, it made me smile at how sweet and innocent it all was. But it also pulled at my heartstrings a little, due to the symbolic meaning of the butterflies and what I felt like it foreshadowed.
Chapter 74
Knocking his bowl, Wei WuXian called a couple of times, but Wen Yuan was still looking down, holding two butterflies and mumbling. At times he pretended to be the one on the left, saying shyly "I… I really like you"; at times he pretended to be the one on the right, saying happily "I really like you too!" Being two butterflies at the same time, he seemed to be having lots of fun.

To me MXTX uses the butterflies to express the unspoken feelings that WWX and LWJ have for each other. I think this small, yet sweet scene, could also show A-Yuan may have picked up on WWX and LWJs true feelings for each other - perhaps on a subconscious level. Children are incredibly perceptive and can pick up on things adults often miss. He may have only seen them together for a few hours, but he's spent a lot of time with WWX and could possibly see how he acts differently with LWJ. Either way, I don't think it's a coincidence MXTX chose to have A-Yuan play with the butterflies - he also has the clay dolls he could have used for his little directorial debut!
The fact A-Yuan is making the two butterflies confess they 'like' each other, echos how WX truly feel for one another. It's almost like the unspoken words they could have, and should have said so many times before. It is certainly allusive of the opportunity they had to confess their feelings during this particular scene as well.
The fact MXTX (or indeed A-Yuan) has made one shy and the other happy, draws parallels between LWJ and WWX's personalities. Much like the WX bunnies with their quiet and energetic personalities respectively. Personally I think it's quite clear MXTX deliberately made A-Yuan portray the two butterflies in this way. Especially if you take a closer look at the original version of MDZS, where the 'shy' and 'happy' personalities are not mentioned - so it's evident that MXTX later added this to enhance the scene, for a very specific reason.
If we look even deeper into this, there may even be more meaning behind the use of butterflies - as I said earlier, MXTX could have used the clay dolls instead. Butterflies are often used as a symbol of love in Chinese culture. More specifically, it can symbolise an undying bond between lovers. They can also represent death and rebirth. Which all fit with the theme of the novel perfectly.
MXTX likes to use little references and pay homage to poems and Chinese culture within the novel. And personally, I think the use of butterflies could be a nod to a particular classic Chinese love story. According to some, this is one of the reasons butterflies often symbolise love in Chinese culture.
There is a tragic yet romantic, Chinese legend known as The Butterfly Lovers (梁祝). Coincidentally (or perhaps not?), there are a few parallels between MDZS and the story as well. Much like our lovely WX, the two lovers in the legend met while studying together, where they develop an instant chemistry. The two main characters even experience misunderstandings that prevent them from becoming a couple. Eventually one of the star-crossed lovers tragically dies and the other follows soon after - which is where our duo obviously deviate, thankfully! The lovers spirits become butterflies and they fly off together, never to be separated again. Which somewhat echoes WXs own ending, where they elope and pledge to be with each other forever.
Something fell from Wen Yuan’s pocket. He called out, “Butter… Butterfly!” With him in his arm, Wei WuXian had already rushed outside the restaurant. Soon, a white shadow swept by him. Lan WangJi seemed to have followed them out as well, walking beside them. Wei WuXian, “Lan Zhan? Why are you following us?” Lan WangJi put into Wen Yuan’s palm the butterfly that he dropped.
Personally, I don't think the above scene is just a means for LWJ to follow them, because he would have either way! It's also symbolic. The two butterflies are suddenly separated, much like WWX and LWJ are later, for some 13 years. Eventually (or two seconds later in the above scene!) they are reunited, just like the butterflies above. It also represents A-Yuan's loss. He loses one of his butterflies, just like he will soon lose WWX - only to have them both reunited, together with him, eventually. It broke my heart when I noticed this tiny moment.
Just like the two frisky male bunnies used as a metaphor for WWX and LWJs true feelings earlier in the novel. The butterflies are used to foreshadow the path their entwined fate will eventually take as well. MXTX's writing style is just absolute poetry and I can't get enough of it.

MXTX Interview with Risa Wataya for Subaru Magazine P.3
Risa Wataya: So that’s how it is. Although Lan WangJi is very quiet, he always uses practical actions to protect Wei WuXian's feelings. He’s a character that makes people feel sincere and earnest. I also really liked the scene where he couldn't beat the alcohol and drank until he lost self-control.
Mo Xiang: Lan Wangji is a cute person! Although he is stubborn and cold and not easy for strangers to approach on the outside, but when he loves someone, he is innocent (*) and sensitive, like a teenage girl. He will cry. He will be shy, jealous, and hesitant. He will worry and fret by himself... I like gong like this! The weakness to wine is to show this cute side of Lan Wangji. I think childish gongs are very cute.
(*: the word used here is chun de 纯的. It means ‘pure’ in the mental and emotional sense. As in his love and his feelings are pure and have no other motives or agendas. It’s not pure/innocent as in... well... we all know Lan Wangji’s sexual awakening involves a dream about him r***-ing Wei Wuxian so... It’s not that kind of innocent.)
Risa Wataya: On his forehead, he wears a forehead band, like a headband in Japan. The fact that the forehead band symbolizes self-restraint is also very interesting.
Mo Xiang: In reality, the forehead band also frequently appears on the costumes of classical Chinese literature. So I think it is a kind of ancient Chinese aristocratic jewelry, to emphasize Gusu Lan Shi's nobility (*) but without giving too much meaning at that time… However, later upon investigation, I found that in ancient China, there was a "ceremonial stoicism" (**) of ethics and etiquette, which is also reflected in clothing and jewelry. For example, "hairpin", which means "proper/virtuous posture"... When walking, if the hairpin makes a sound, you need to adjust your posture. Although the exposure of the forehead does not seem to have special meaning, "binding" is reminiscent of "self-restraint.” After considering the behavioral ethics of the ancient Chinese, I developed this “restraint oneself” setting.
(*: the wording here does not actually mean nobility as in a ranking or social class of the time, but in the feelings evoked by Gusu Lan Shi, in the way they conduct themselves, restrain themselves, deny themselves extreme power, in the goals and standards they set for themselves, in the ways they treat other common people in a time where China had an extremely rigid nine-ranked caste system and extensive slave class and slavery system. A sense of beyond the petty squabbles of common mortals. In other words, nobility from the bones)
(**: 礼服克己 Lifu Keji: an ancient manifested philosophy and a type of Asian ascetism where a practitioner must conduct his life, from the smallest, most insignificant details, with extreme restraint and control.) 
Risa Wataya: Ah, so that’s how it is. The plot related to the forehead band is quite interesting. Although looking at the full text, there are a lot of sorrowful, tragic parts, but after adding such interesting details, the mood becomes much lighter.
Mo Xiang: If it's all torture (*), my readers will run away. By the way, the “Aside from the destined person, other people cannot touch the forehead band” detail is something I suddenly thought of during the writing process. I often read classical Chinese martial arts novels (wuxia). The female characters often appear on screen and say: "You have seen my face. You must marry me." "Or "You touch my hand, you're responsible!" (**) But I thought, "Why do women always have to say this?"
(*: modern Chinese slang. It literally means ‘reverse/mistreat.’ It denotes ‘sad, sorrowful’ tones in stories that will make you cry buckets and run away screaming or require times in therapy (Ask the folks reading Erha. They will tell you all about it). Chinese stories are often marked with either ‘mistreat’ or ‘sweet’ to tell readers the tone of the stories. Alternative slangs are ‘glass shards’ and ‘candies.’ It’s a very popular modern Chinese writing technique to mix glass shards and candies, and it’s generally believed there are no great stories without ‘glass shards’ in them. The readers need to cry to remember the stories you are telling. So the vast majority of modern Chinese literature is of the ‘glass shards mixed in candies’ variety. Have fun!)  
(**: Common trope in Wuxia and Xianxia genre. This stems from the strict sexual segregation of ancient China and the rigid customs imposed on women. For thousands of years in China, up until the last one hundred years, it was very normal for daughters of wealthy families to never step foot outside their house, or even their personal wing inside their house, until the day of their wedding. And after their wedding, this process is repeated in their husband’s house.
The traditional saying is that there are only three places for women in this world: the ancestral hall, the kitchen, and the bedroom. This saying is even repeated by Jiang Cheng when talking about Jiang Yanli in the novel.
There’s a lot of emphasis on women maintaining extreme unstained virtue. So there used to be ridiculous things like if you see an unwed woman’s face, then you must take responsibility for her, and so forth. In particular dynasties, it also wasn’t strange for blood feuds or even all-out war to occur because some random dudes saw some particularly protected woman’s face… or touch her hair or that sort of thing.)
"So I wanted to try the same setup on the male character Lan Wangji, adding meaning to the forehead band. That moment when one’s ethics and ceremonial morality codes are broken. This feeling of hysterical panic and discombobulation applied to a male character might be very interesting indeed!” (*)
(*: tone / word choice is especially gleeful at seeing Lan Wangji metaphorically having his chastity slip being stolen by Wei Wuxian)    
Translator note: Hmm, this part the vocabulary is a bit more complex and needing extra explanations than the previous two. I worry that a lot of lingual concepts don’t match up to the English words, or that the same concepts don’t exist at all. Ergo, the abundance of notes. I hope it’s not too disruptive.
That said, after this part 3, I will have to stop for a few days. The reason is because... I have to wait (and beg) for the scan of the next page in the interview. You might not know this, but this interview with MXTX was rumored by Japanese fans for a long time. The result is when it was confirmed, the May-June edition of Subaru magazine was sold out in minutes! People queued up for hours and could not buy it. The magazine originally retails for about 10 USD. But now there are people reselling it for 70 USD and there are plenty of people queuing up to buy those too! So of course... even had I tried... I still would not be able to get even a finger nail on this edition.

Luckily! I am in this Vietnamese MXTX fan group. A “rich sister” in there was able to acquire a copy and shared a scanned page with the rest of us. The magazine is something of a collector item now, much clout, very envy!! That kind! So the rest of us peons have to wait for the next scanned pages.

No thoughts head empty, just a Wangxian figure skating AU where Wei Wuxian is a completely artistic skater, who also pushes the boundaries and himself to the limit. And at first he’s beloved by both fans and the Skating Union, but then suddenly he’s too good, so the judges start subtly underscoring him. But it still can’t stop him. He’s also pushed through many an injury at his coach’s (yzy) demand, but still manages to persevere and come out on top.
And it drives Lan Wangji insane. Because Wangji is technical, through and through. He does not deviate from his program of 5 quads, not even if he falls and knows that the only way to get the points he needs would be to add some technical difficulty. But if Wei ying falls, then his hands go over his head for every. Other. Jump. and suddenly he’s running at wangji but not really cause he jumps slightly to the left of Wangji, up onto the first place platform of the podium. And he looks radiant, grinning and waving at everyone. And he’s flawless during the gala exhibition. And he grins, and chats, and flirts with everyone at the gala dinner. And it infuriates Lan Wangji, because it always ends the same-
“Lan Zhan, silver suits you!”
“Shameless”
“Ah Lan Zhhhhaaaan, it was a compliment! Look, I have silver eyes and a gold medal, you have gold eyes and a silver medal! We’re like soulmates!”
“Ridiculous!”
And he stomps off, face flushed with embarrassment. He seethes about Wei Ying’s teasing, mostly because it makes his mind spin and dissolves his stomach into a hoard of butterflies. And he always focuses so much on his own embarrassment, that he never notices the shy smile on Wei Ying’s face as his eyes adoringly follow Lan Zhan back to his table, or the slap Jiang Cheng lands on the back of Wei Wuxian’s head.
“You’re an idiot. Why do you insist on teasing him?” Jiang Cheng grumbles, but Wei Ying’s eyes shine.
“Because getting a reaction is better than any medal, A-Cheng”
And Jiang Cheng proceeds to gag and drag him back to his table.

Jin Guangyao had gone back to Cloud Recesses with the procession because he still didn't trust any of this and he doesn't want to let A-Huan deal with it alone. His father doesn't even argue against it, which just makes him more suspicious.
Xuanyu is acting strangely.
By all accounts, his sister is moody and irritable and half mad. She'd refused to speak when she'd been escorted to Koi Tower, watching everyone with dark, hateful eyes that reminded him more of a wild animal than a woman.
Jiang Yanli seems to think that she was just shy and upset, while Zixuan had been too distracted arguing with their father to have any sort of opinion on their sister, but he's not convinced.
She says things she can't possibly know without being told, offhand pieces of Cloud Recesses and Lan Wangji that aren't secrets, exactly, but still aren't things she should know. Not unless someone told her.
"Is it so strange that she asked about the family she was marrying into?" A-Huan asks, his hands gentle as he combs through his hair.
Jin Guangyao leans his head back into him, briefly pausing his movements. "Who would she have asked? The servants didn't tell her anything."
"You can't know every word spoken by every servant," A-Huan says, teasing.
He thinks he can, actually, but there's no real way to prove that. "She's after something."
"Maybe she just wants a good marriage. She's good with Sizhui," he says. "He was so worried about this, no matter how much Wangji reassured him. But she does really like kids."
If she's trying to get Lan Wangji to trust her, going through Sizhui isn't a bad way to do it. He loves his son and hates doing anything that upsets him. She and Sizhui really do seem to be getting along well, and he doesn't imagine that it will take long for Sizhui to start getting upset at his father's coldness to his new step-mother that he adores.
"Stop that," A-Huan murmurs.
He hadn't even said anything!
"Come to bed," he continues, sliding his hand down Jin Guangyao's neck to cup his jaw and tilt his head back. "Worry about things in the morning."
He's worrying about things constantly, but lucky for them both, he is a genius.
He can multitask.

WangXian meet cute on halloween, while WY is whearing a silly vampire costume he meets this quiet kid with just a white sheet over him with two holes for their pretty eyes.
WY being the 15 years old popular kid, immediatly want to be his friend and he start to drag the kid around and show him things he likes and shares candies and wants everyone to likes the kid too.
The kid's name is Lan Zhan, Lan WangJi, WY never have heard of him or someone who have two names, but thats doesn't matter since LWJ is too fun. He always says funny answears! He's so shy!! Is so cute!!!
WY aks LWJ if they can meet again and LWJ says maybe but WY never sees LWJ again until next halloween where he seems the tall ghost with pretty eyes he have talked about with everyone
He again drags LWJ around but now he asks what he was doing and why he disapeared and turns out LWJ RUNNED! AWAY! from his uncle because he broked some weird rule, and LWJ, on his rebel phase, runned to the next city to grab some candy's while disguised and also while his family was sleeping
WY who had a complete fuddy duddy view of him, is ecstasied with this. Lan Zhan is so awesome!
Also, WY never have seem LWJ's face so when they were talking in the edge of the road, WY asks LWJ if he can see him, and when he lift the sheet!
Gosh!! WY is so blushed and if he already have talked about the ghost kid with everyone that is his friend, he will not shut up about how much he thinks LWJ is pretty and cute
LWJ start to go to WY's house almost every week and they quickly became a couple and start to wear matching costumes every halloween

later, when lxc gives him his latest batch of fanmail and a summary of the crowd reaction from his last program, new and old fans of fs talking about how his genuine love for fs made them fall in love with him and fs too -- lwj gets it now.
as for wwx, he's incredibly charmed having someone who not only /lets/ him ramble about his niche discoveries, but also genuinely listens enough to ask thoughtful questions, that in turn inspire him with new points of view of looking at things.
and when said someone is Particularly Beautiful Beautiful man, who isn't shy at all about giving him sincere verbal affirmations... well, it just really isn't good for his heart, but he can't stop coming back for more.
and then of course, as in bunnxianluvsu's thread (which started this whole shebang for me), there's the hilarity of wwx's friends and family belatedly realizing wwx's shiny new boyfriend is THE lan wangji of the figure skating world...
lwj's family, coaches and trainers torn between exasperation, frustration and gratitude because lwj having a boyfriend means he's now sometimes not as in top condition as he was before; but when he /skates/. well. he's Very inspired and passionate about it which is. fine, not Bad
jc, 3 secs from pulling out his hair over their weekly family dinner: DO YOU EVEN /KNOW/ WHAT YOUR BOYFRIEND DOES FOR A LIVING!??!?!? wwx: he says he skates sometimes! and sometimes coaches the children's skating lessons during the summer in gusu! isn't he the best?
later, as wwx devolves into another rambling session over something lwj did or said that was incredibly funny, "he's so knowledgeable in figure skating and also really secretly bitchy about the !5U, he's hilarious--":

also hilarious when wwx holds a smaller master lecture - the first lwj can witness (which is also a marvel, being in the sidelines and watching another master in his own element, watching wwx rouse a crowd with words) - and when a kid on the 2nd row falls asleep, lwj is Furious

the first family dinner they have right after, lwj spends the whole time "subtly" gloating about it, how wwx IS as famous as lwj is wwx: aiya, you're still more famous than i am! more kids would rather watch the most beautiful and the GOAT, lwj skate than listen to me ramble!
wwx: which they should! cuz lwj is truly the best--! jc: god someone please get them to STOP nmj passing money to lxc: that was cheating, you practically goaded your brother; we could've at least gotten through dessert before he got started lxc: whatever you say a-jue
wangxian had been dating for a year and living together for 6 mos. of that before wwx finally realizes just what his boyfriend does for a living. and no, it wasn't when he found lwj's olympic gold medal while wwx was rooting through lwj's sock drawer for something or other.
(which at that time he'd thought was a prop??? some inside joke kind of replica????)
no, it was when, on a rare day off (where wwx was banned from the lab for holing up in there for 72 hours when he was supposed to be on mandatory leave), wwx finally turns up the news to find his boyfriend answering questions in a very formal very live press conference.
it takes wwx 5 mins of ogling his boyfriend all made up, so handsome, In A Suit, before he processes the headline: NATION'S REPRESENTATIVE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST LWJ PREPARING FOR WINTER GAMES
(which, he knew lwj was leaving for work related to the olympics, but he didn't know it was AS A COMPETITOR - AND AS THE DEFENDING CHAMPION AT THAT!??!!?!?!!??!?!? LIKE, LAN ZHAN IS AMAZING WBK, BUT?!??!?!?!? HE'S DATING AN OLYMPIAN????? LAN ZHAN????????)
and Then, someone asks about lwj's new program. "i cannot say much detail, but i have been very inspired lately by cosmology - my partner has taught me a lot about matter and anti-matter, the various theories, and the wonder of its mystery. i dedicate my free skate to him."
wwx, in his boxers and one of lwj's older shirts, sitting in their shared living room with his red face in his hands: "y..yaep. yaeh... that's my lan zhan...lan zhannnnn"
and it's not like wwx is dense or dumb. he just has very niche interests and a near-obsessive, singular focus on these very niche and choice interests. but he does know how to put 2 and 2 together, very quickly when he notices them.
5 mos ago when lwj kept asking him about his last panel on anti-matter theories. the kids' idolization of lwj. the rigorous training lwj goes through. the couple of competitions lwj had left for a few days at a time (he'd thought as a coach!).
and knowing lwj, it's not so much as him actively keeping it from him, but rather that lwj rlly isn't one to talk about his achievements, fame and status. "gusu lan won again" probably meant /lwj/ won again. and wwx just replied with "oh yea? that's nice, as expected of my lz"
on the spot, wwx makes a few calls to his department (who is relieved and more than a little surprised that wwx finally decided to spend his vacation leaves) and his research assistants. he sends vicious messages to his siblings (YOU GUYS KNEW?!? HOW CLD YOU NOT TELL MEEEE?!?!?"
and then he fixes himself up and waits for lwj to come home.
lwj comes home, mentally exhausted as most media days always tend to leave him. except this time, there's a little more relief to coming home, because he knows wei ying will be waiting for him there.
wwx is not waiting for him there. or well, he's not waiting barefoot in the kitchen like he'd promised to this morning.
instead, wwx is staring up at the lwj skating his short program for sochi 2014 with the same starry-eyed, slack-jawed expression he wore when lwj did a tiny double toe loop at the public park on their first date.
(he'd been immediately scolded by the guard but that same expression on wwx's face had been worth it) lwj feels his ears heat up, though most of his embarrassment is taken over by slight trepidation.
he'd known from the moment they met that wwx had no interest or much knowledge about figure skating - he barely even knew how to skate. and though lwj never really talked about his career, he /has/ mentioned it to wwx, who seemed to have taken it in stride...
on screen, lwj's short program comes to a close, the camera focusing on the overwhelmed tears lwj had thought he'd managed to completely hide. wwx sniffles a little and lwj offers him his handkerchief. "wei ying...? are you oka--"
wwx jumps a foot of the couch with a screech. "LAN ZHAN!" lwj flinches a little. "YOU SCARED ME!! SINCE WHEN DID YOU COME BACK?!?!"
"just a few minutes..." truthfully, lwj's starting to feel a little miffed, the stress of the day catching up with him, and not a single hug or kiss from wwx in sight. "--ah, no, that's not it," wwx groans into his hands.
"aiyaa i lost track of time, this wasn't how it was supposed to go." wwx laments before launching himself out of the couch, wrapping arms and legs around lwj.
lwj inwardly thanks his core training for keeping him steady, and letting him enjoy having wwx in his arms.
instantly, all the tension eases from his shoulders and disappears completely when wwx pulls away to kiss him deep and slow.
"lan zhan, i missed you so much." wwx says in between pecks all over lwj's face. lwj hums in agreement. it truly was a long day.
"poor you," wwx says, rubbing circles at his temple and beneath his eyes. lwj barely resists the urge to purr. "were the press people mean to you?"
"not any more difficult than usual." lwj says, depositing the both of them on the couch.
then lwj pauses, wondering if he'd mentioned to wwx that today was indeed a press day...
"well, you know who's been mean to me?" wwx pulls away. "my whole family and friends, and even my own boyfriend!"
wwx pokes at his chest before lwj can even get a word in. "that's right, even my own boyfriend!"
"i--"
"why didn't you tell me you were famous?!?" wwx grasps him by the shirt and shakes him, wailing, "ALL THIS TIME I'VE BEEN DATING A CELEBRITY!!!"
"i am not--"
"lan zhaaan, you get featured on TV and lots of people know you, and you've got people idolizing you!"
"wei ying is the same." wwx gives him an unimpressed look. "that's not the same, and you know it. i'm not the one breaking world records every competition!"
"i do not break world records every competition." lwj replies dryly.
"lan zhaaan, that's not the point!" wwx kicks his legs in the air. "my boyfriend turns out to be a very important person and i didn't even know about it - i haven't been treating you right at all!"
"in what ways has wei ying not treated me right?" lwj tugs wwx closer by the wrists. "have you ever harmed or abused me in any way? have you ever treated me unkindly or with disrespect?"
"of course not, but that's basic human decency!" wwx says. "i should've been spoiling you!"
"and am i not spoiled with wei ying's affection every day?" lwj asks. wwx pouts. "the only way i want to be treated is as wei ying's partner - not as a celebrity or someone to worship - but as wei ying's equal."
"aiyaa, what have i said about those words of yours! have mercy on my poor heart." wwx whines, before kissing him again, and lwj knows he's won.
"i still think you deserve better..."
"i could say the same to wei ying." lwj says.
"my boyfriend is also an important figure in his industry, and has contributed greatly, making history with his many accomplishments." lwj says, immensely enjoying the deep flush creeping up wwx's face and neck.
"lan zhaaan, you don't play fair," wwx whines.
“i’m still bummed i had to find out through your press con - by /accident/!” wwx huffs later, after dinner and dessert featuring all of lwj’s favorites, and then Dessert...
“i truly did not mean to keep it from you.” lwj kisses his temple in apology. “i thought you knew.”
"i know," wwx blows a raspberry into lwj's nipple. lwj jolts and he grins with an apology kiss.
"at first, i did enjoy wei ying not knowing about me." lwj admits. "it was...a relief. there was no pressure."
"having all that attention, must be tough on you, huh." wwx laments.
"mm..." lwj hums, and wwx waits.
"but then, when i attended that conference with you, and saw you in your element - i wanted you to see me, too." lwj admits.
"oh, lan zhan," wwx rises so he can look into lwj's eyes. "i want to see you, too. i want to be part of your world, too"
"that's why i'm going with you to the olympics - and every event that puts you on ice, for that matter!" wwx says. "i want to see you doing what you love."
and lwj melts, the lines of his face softening into that rare but beautiful smile wwx loves so much.
"i would love that."

MDZS Fanfic AU Idea:
TL;DR: Lan Wangji and most other Lans regularly sneak around disguised as rogue cultivators so they can break Lan rules in secret — until the other sects find out...
Throwback to that one idea I had way back when of a Canon Divergent AU of The Untamed where it turns out that the Lan Sect actually *can't* follow all 3.5k rules all of the time... and so in desperation they were forced to come up with the idea (excuse) of establishing a spy network where they would be required to go undercover without the fancy headbands or the vibrant white clothes or, most importantly, the excessively rigid rules...

(Not because they need a spy network or anything — the spy network is just an excuse. In reality, too many Lans were breaking too many rules and having to be punished all the time, and it was risking ruining their reputation.
Afterall, if even the Lans can't follow all of their rules, how can they expect the guest disciples to? Something had to change...
And so, instead of simply changing the rules or easing up on them a bit (the obvious, rational choice), they instead established a spy network where Lans under too much pressure from following so many rules would be allowed to roam free, virtually uninhibited, on the sole condition that when they returned they would bring with them some new information about what's going on in the world...)

Only the other main sects know vaguely of the Lan Spy Network, and even then only because the Lan Sect seemed to have an endless well of information that they definitely shouldn't have and no one for the life of them can figure out how or where they're getting all this information from...
So, obviously the Lans must have some sort of spies — though, considering their well-documented inability to blend in (what with their white clothing and headbands and strict rules that must be followed at all times without exception) the other sects were under the impression that their spies were animals or something, rather like the Wen birds.
If not animals, then civilians or rogue cultivators that were employed by or indebted to the Lan.
(Under no circumstances were they expecting the Lans themselves to be the spies.)

This AU was largely inspired by two things:
That scene in the library where Lan Wangji told Wei Wuxian to "piss off." —People don't typically slip up and just say a word or phrase that they've never even thought of or said before... More likely, LWJ has said it before, but was trying to restrain himself from doing so while in "Lan-mode".
A while ago, I watched this other historical drama that also starred Wang Yibo (LWJ's actor), except that I didn't realize at first that it was him because he looked so different... different clothes, different hairstyle, different behavior... They were both historical dramas, but he looked like two completely different people! To the point that I didn't even recognize him!
For reference, here's a side-by-side comparison of Wang Yibo in The Untamed vs Legend of Fei:

If you saw Guy-on-the-Right walking around town all smiley and smug you would NOT think, "Is that the great Hanguang Jun?! What is he wearing?!" No, you would instead think, "Wow, that rogue cultivator is pretty hot..."
I imagine they still keep their headbands on their person when in disguise, just hidden away so they're not visible... Most likely either wrapped around their wrist or their ankle and then hidden away under an arm cuff or a boot.
Little baby Lans are introduced to ~Undercover Work~ slowly, first by being brought out in pairs with an older, more experienced Lan while they're still young enough for their subdued behavior to be dismissed as just a "shy, well-behaved child" — but old enough that they won't slip up and say something they shouldn't, like, "Hi, I'm Lan Zhan."
Lan Wangji was of course first brought out by Lan Xichen, who reassured him that, "Yes, you can run if you want. Yes, you can shout and make noise. Yes, you can slouch. Yes, yes, yes..."

Whenever someone goes undercover, the other Lans will tell Outsiders that the reason they're unreachable is because they're "in seclusion".
While Lans do actually go into seclusion at times, it's not nearly as often as the other sects are led to believe. Far more likely, they're actually running around ~undercover~ and in-disguise, while seclusion is just being used as an excuse as for why no one can see them or get into contact with them.

Regular check-ins are of course required to keep track of everyone, much like a "Warm Body Count" in a college dorm.
Additionally, I forgot to mention this before but there are of course some rules that they are still expected to follow, namely the ones that everyone would be expected to follow — such as, for example, no murder.
No assault, no kidnapping, no destruction of public property... Just the stuff that most people would agree should never be allowed. (At least, not without good reason.)

Not all of the Lan disciples know about this. Su She, for example, has no idea.
It's only the inner disciples who are genuinely expected to follow all the rules all the time that are given this option of running away for a bit...
(They know that if they allowed everyone in the sect to be in on it, they would never be able to keep it a secret from the Outsiders.)

There are actually far, far more Lans than the other sects realize. This is because at any given time over half of all Lan disciples will be off premises either on official night hunts, wandering about in disguise, or on rotation keeping vigil at one of their many secret outposts.
Speaking of the Lan outposts, there are many all spread out throughout the cultivation world, including at least one in every single major sect's territory.
It's there that undercover Lans can check-in, pass along informative, get medical care, seek asylum, and so on and so forth.
These outposts are connected by secret tunnel systems that the Lans carved themselves, and only in extremely outstanding circumstances are Outsiders ever given any information at all whatsoever about the outposts — and even then, it is only the main family themselves that are permitted to deign to share that information.
The only time a member of another major sect ever heard anything about them is when Lan Xichen himself told Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang that if they ever found themselves in an extreme emergency scenario where they desperately needed medical help or asylum but for whatever reason had no where else that they could safely go, to seek out a specific place...
The mark he drew on their arm would signal to their people that they are under their protection and they would be granted asylum.
However, if they ever dared to tell anyone anything about what Lan Xichen had told them... Then the marks on their arms would become corrupted and they would not only be blacklisted from the outposts, but any attempt to enter would be met with lethal force.

The outposts are hidden in brothels, btw.
Brothels are special in that they tend to operate under an unspoken agreement amongst both the staff and the customers to never speak of what or who they see behind closed doors.
A sort of, "you don't see me, I don't see you" kind of situation.
Thanks to this, they don't have to worry about any witnesses speaking up about what they see; Injured, bleeding cultivators can stumble in the doors and through the halls, and enter rooms that they never come out of, and the other patrons will say nothing.

Summary: Wei Ying died at the age of 10, but miraculously the little boy Lan Wangji from down the street was able to see him. They become an unlikely pair and form an unbreakable friendship. Things seem fine until a hostile presence shakes Wei Ying to his ghostly core. Kay's comments: I can honestly recommend all stories in Musey's Xiantober, so I'm cherry-picking those I love especially. This is one of them. An AU where Lan Zhan grows up with ghost Wei Ying beside him, together they grow older and closer and along the way, they might also solve the mystery of Wei Ying's murder. A very fitting story for spooky month! Excerpt: It was a weird experience, attending your own funeral. Wei Ying stood beside the grave, watching as the casket was lowered into the ground. He glanced around at his friends and family, saw their tears and their grief. Anger bubbled inside of his transparent chest. Then, by chance, he made eye contact. The young Lan boy from down the street who Wei Ying had desperately tried to befriend, but he was always too shy and ran away, always avoiding A-Ying. Yet right here, right now, surrounded by the people he loved most who couldn't see him, this young boy was looking directly at him with wide eyes. Wei Ying lifted his hand hesitantly and waved. Lan Zhan's gaze flicked to his hand, then back to him, and just as hesitantly, he gave a little wave back.

“I don’t like it,” is all Madam Yu says, when Jiang-shushu announces that Wei Wuxian and her Shijie will be accompanying Jiang Cheng to Gusu. “Mark my words, Jiang Fengmian! You’ll come to regret it, just wait and see.”
“Why? Luo Qingyang from the Jin sect is going, too,” Wei Ying protests. “And anyway, uncle-in-law will be our laoshi. He’ll take care of both of us.”
“I am not worried about A-Li,” Yu-furen snaps. “I am worried about you.”
Wei Wuxian blinks at her. “Huh?”
“A-Xian, Lan Wangji likes you,” Jiang Yanli says gently, “and the standards of propriety are different in Gusu. You’ve never been there before, and it’s possible that you might do something the Lan consider disgraceful without even meaning it. Mother is only concerned for your safety.”
“But the peacock’s going to be there, and you’re coming with me. Can’t I just follow your example, Jie?”
“Lan Wangji likes you,” her sister repeats. A pained look flickers across her eyes, so swiftly that Wei Ying scarcely catches it, and then she leans forward and grasps Wei Ying’s hand. “You can’t treat him the way I treat Zixuan. How could either of you bear it, when he spent his last summer here watching you climb trees with the shimeis and catching you when you fell out of them?”
“Well, I’d hate it,” frowns Wei Wuxian, “but Lan Zhan would probably be relieved. His idea of a good day is ten hours of silent reading, in a library. He won’t even take his books outside unless I make him, and then he says he doesn’t understand why Uncle says my homework demonstrates better comprehension than his—as if Lan Zhan doesn’t know that fresh air and hot hulatang are all anybody needs to help stimulate the mind! It’s a pity that I won’t be able to shake him up in Gusu like I do here, but it can’t be helped.”
Madam Yu looks at Jiang-shushu in despair.
“You see?” she complains. “Suppose Lan Wangji yields to temptation, and they are discovered together? Wei Ying is only sixteen, and their wedding is not set to take place until the year after A-Li’s—if there must be a hasty marriage, we will never be able to hide it! This is folly!”
“I will visit Pan-daifu in the village before we leave,” Shijie says diplomatically. “Just in case we require a—a prescription. For later.”
Wei Wuxian furrows her brow and glances over at Jiang Cheng, who looks just as confused as she does. Shijie always pays a visit to Healer Pan before traveling because of her delicate health, but Wei Wuxian doesn’t understand why bringing that up now would assuage Madam Yu.
“Fine. Fine! If my own daughter believes it meet to flout my wishes, what other recourse do I have?” Yu-furen bites out at last, flicking a water beetle off her sleeve. “And you, Fengmian! If this venture goes ill, on your own head be it!”

"Lan Zhan.”
“...”
“Aiyah, Lan Zhan.”
Lan Wangji glances up from his latest composition (an essay titled The Role of Intention in Inquiry and the Contributing Effects of Resentment, by Young Master Lan Wangji) and tries not to shy away from the bright eyes of his betrothed. “Yes?”
“Lan Zhan, you’re ignoring me,” she accuses him. “To think that I traveled all the way from Yunmeng to see you, and you barely give me the time of day! What a neglectful betrothed you are!”
“You are here with me now,” Wangji points out. “I spend more time with you than I do with anyone else, save Shufu and my brother.”
“But I’m only here for the summer. Didn’t I take care of you well at Lotus Pier? You have to pay back the favor now that I’m here.”
Lan Wangji lays his brush aside and folds his hands neatly in his lap, for he had felt a little wretched at the thought of disappointing her. “Then what would you like to do?”
“Well, first I want you to tell me what’s allowed here and what’s not,” Wei Ying says reasonably. “Jiang-shushu’s only rule for us was—”
“I remember!” Lan Wangji interrupts. He was rude just then, he knows, but he doubts he could bear hearing Wei Ying repeat that particular rule in the safety of the Cloud Recesses. The only provision for his continued welcome at Lotus Pier was that he should never be caught alone in a room with his betrothed behind closed doors; other than that, Jiang Fengmian only asked that he accompany Wei Ying to her meals to make sure that she ate on time, and to treat her kindly and defend her if she fell into danger.
Those were simple rules to follow, and Lan Wangji had felt very proud of the trust that came along with them, but to mention them being caught together here in the Cloud Recesses—
“Why is your face turning red? Do you have a fever?” Wei Ying demands. “Lan Zhan, let me check.”
He tries to protest, but her rough fingers are already scrabbling at his brow, trying to feel his forehead through the cold silk of his ribbon, and Lan Wangji nearly passes away on the spot as the ribbon slips down to his nose. Engaged couples are allowed to touch each other’s ribbons, though it isn’t often done, and pushing her away would only hurt her feelings: so Lan Wangji forces himself to endure while she checks his pulse and temperature, taking care not to pull away too quickly after she finishes.
“You are sick,” she gasps, looking down at her empty palm as if she could still feel the heat of Wangji’s skin burning there. “Let’s go to the healers and ask for medicine.”
“No need.”
Wei Ying tugs at his sleeve. “Then what about Shijie? She could set up her own private apothecary here with all the medicine she brought from home. And she apprenticed with our Lufeng doctors, so she’ll definitely know what to give you. Come on!”
Lan Wangji cannot bring himself to refuse; for he can feel the sudden pounding of his pulse and the flush darkening at his throat, and a blissful sense of dizziness that worsens when Wei Ying grasps his hand and haul him out of the library pavilion. He follows without resistance, allowing her to tow him along like a doll dragging behind a child; and when they reach the guest quarters, Wei Ying kicks her sister’s door aside and pulls Wangji over the threshold.
“Shijie!” she cries, startling Jiang-guniang so badly that she rends a long hole in the sampler she was embroidering. “Jie, I know Lan Zhan’s not supposed to be here, but we need some of the medicine Pan-yishi gave you.”
Jiang Yanli blanches and drops her needle.
“You need what?”
“I know it’s expensive, but I’ll pay you back,” frets Wei Ying. “Please, Shijie? For Lan Zhan’s sake?”
For some reason, Jiang-guniang looks more astonished than ever. “You...A-Xian, you need it now? You’re not anticipating it for, ah, later?”
“Right now,” Wei Ying says firmly. “Any delay in treatment could cause trouble, Shijie. Lan Zhan didn’t want to go to the infirmary, you see, so I brought him here.”
“I see,” Jiang Yanli frowns, shooting a stern glare in Lan Wangji’s direction. “Very well, then. I’ll go fetch the herbs and water for tea.”
She stands up and hurries towards the back of the house, shooting Lan Wangji a stern look on her way; and then she disappears, leaving Wangji and Wei Ying alone in the middle of the receiving room.
“Your Shijie is not happy with me,” Lan Wangji murmurs. “You have asked for the herbs on my behalf, and I will not reject your kindness, but it seems the medicine is dearer to Jiang-guniang than I thought. Will you come down with me to Caiyi tomorrow so I can buy quality replacements for her? It must be difficult to part from a needed medicine so far from home.”
“Shijie isn’t angry,” Wei Ying whispers back. “She carries more fever tonic and strengthening pills than she could ever need. Pan-yishi gives her a whole year’s worth at a time, and we’re going back home before autumn.”
A moment later, Jiang Yanli re-enters the room with a pot of hot water and a bag of herbs, which she distills into medicine so quickly that most of the Cloud Recesses’ best healers would have envied her speed. The tea takes less than a a minute to steep, and two minutes to cool; and when Jiang-guniang can put it to her lips without wincing at the heat, she passes it over the table to Wei Ying.
“Here, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying says tenderly, giving it to Lan Wangji. “Drink.”
“No!” Jiang-guniang cries, snatching the medicine back. “A-Xian, you’re supposed to drink it. What could it possibly do for Second Young Master Lan?”
“But Shijie, that’s not fair! He’s the one who needs it!”
“I know such things are not fair,” Jiang Yanli says, glaring daggers at Lan Wangji; apparently, his worries about the value of the herbs had not been unfounded. “But there is no way to place this responsibility on men, so you must take the medicine. Quickly.”
Wei Ying blinks, puzzled by her sister’s irritation, and reaches out to take her hand. “Jie,” she beseeches, “Shijie, don’t be angry. Lan Zhan wouldn’t have come near me if he’d known that—”
“He is old enough to know,” Jiang-guniang says tartly. “And I’m not happy with you either, Xianxian. I thought Mother was being too strict with you, and that she should trust Lan Wangji to treat you with due respect, but it seems that she was right and I was wrong.”
“Lan Zhan is always respectful towards me.” Wei Ying looks more confused than ever. “If he came to the library knowing he had a fever, it was only because I asked him to accompany me while I copied lines. And he took ill after we got there, anyway, so it’s not his fault!”
“Sister-in-law,” Lan Wangji cuts in. “I apologize for the intrusion. I should not have entered your quarters, or accepted your medicine when you have need of it yourself. Rest assured that I will procure more herbs for you before this afternoon, and seek treatment for my fever elsewhere. Good day.”
He turns around and walks out into the garden, taking slow, measured steps with one hand tucked behind his back. Wei Ying runs after him, urging him to come back and finish the tea Jiang-guniang prepared; but for some reason, Jiang Yanli rushes out after her, looking so embarrassed that her snowy-white cheeks are practically scarlet.
“You wanted medicine for fever?” she gasps, giving Wei Ying a gentle shake. “Just—a simple fever, because Lan-er-gongzi was taken ill in the library?”
“Fevers and sweats, and a shallow pulse,” Wei Ying tells her, counting on her fingers. “You can take his temperature, if you need to. Lan Zhan won’t mind.”
Lan Wangji very much would mind, but providing proof of his fever seems important. He holds out his wrist and lets Jiang Yanli feel it, wondering if she suspected some ailment that could have endangered Wei Ying: perhaps one that harmed women more readily than men, since she had tried to give the medicine to her sister instead. If that is the case, Wangji thinks, Maiden Jiang’s anger is justified; for he would never forgive a man who knowingly made his brother ill, especially if the guilty party was Xiongzhang’s intended.
“I’m a fool,” Jiang Yanli mutters to herself, dropping Lan Wangji’s hand. “But you’re not ill, Lan-er-gongzi. You had a fit of nerves, that’s all.”
“Nerves!”
“Yes, nerves,” Jiang-guniang repeats. “I recommend solitary meditation after training with your sword and hot milk before bed. It worked wonders for A-Cheng when he was a child.”
And with that, she bids them both goodbye, and hastens back into the little guest house before closing the doors behind her.
“I have no idea what just happened,” Wei Ying confesses, “but A-Jie really thought I was in danger. Does Gusu have some kind of mountain fever that spares men and kills women?”
“Not to my knowledge, no.”
“Ah, well. At least we know what’s wrong with you,” his intended says cheerfully. “Let’s go meditate, you dear fuddy-duddy. Shijie told you to start after breakfast, and it’ll be lunchtime in less than a shichen.”
Suddenly, Lan Wangji’s heart feels so full that he can scarcely breathe.
“En, you are right. I will do as you say,” he smiles, taking her hand in his. “Lead the way, Wei Ying.”

Song that inspired the title, idea is from this and the one post I made about wanting to write a prompt based off "you drew stars/around my scars/and now i'm bleeding"
This is so sweet and emotional, it made me miss writing angst and killing blorbos.

Lan Wangji passes by that place every morning when he takes A-Yuan to school. It's still the same as always, the same as back then, a little shop facing the main street, high windows with tattoo displays on them and a light up sign that hasn't flashed in over a decade.
"You don't look like the tattoo type." He laughs, and it lights up his whole face, his handsome features softening. His lip piercing glistens under the white neon lights, and for a moment, Lan Wangji forgets he's nervous at all. "Is there any occasion you're doing this for?"
"For... my mother, she's... gone."
There have been many rumors. Some said he ran away, others said he killed himself, or was disposed of. Most people shook their head and moved on with their lives.
Sometimes, Lan Wangji wishes he did too. Wishes he could.
It's been so long.
"Have you thought where you'd like it done?"
"It must be somewhere hidden. My workplace is...strict. As is my family."
He laughs again, and Lan Wangji finds himself yearning for the sound, wanting to remember it forever, melodious, sincere. Light shines on his face, his stormy eyes glistening with mirth, and Lan Wangji irrationally wonders what it would be like to hear that laughter forever.
"How about your arm? There's plenty of space there, I see." a wink, and Lan Wangji's ears flare red.
"Alright."
"I'll do my best so it doesn't hurt too much, but you'll hate me when I'll start to color it in, so heads up for that."
"It is fine, I am used to pain."
He smiles, but this time it's in sympathetic understanding, hiding something dark and painful beneath, "I am too. Doesn't mean you have to like it."
The tattoo is still there, beautiful etched into his skin. It hurt, but not nearly as much as everything else in his life - before that, and after - did. He still catches himself admiring it in the shower, or as he's getting ready in the mirror.
"Do you want to talk about your mother? It'll help distract you, you seem tense."
Lan Wangji was tense, but not because of the procedure, the other's touch electrifying, the closeness, intoxicating. But, indeed, this was about Lan Wangji's mother. And he never really got to talk to anyone about her.
It's comforting, to know there are still pieces of him into the world, scattered in the crowd, carrying his mastery, his touch, his soul, his creativity.
His love.
"My mom died too. Both my parents did. And I... I don't really remember them anymore. I was 3 or 4 years old when it happened, and then I lived on the streets for a while before uncle Jiang found me and took me in. I always wanted to find a way to make sure I wouldn't ever forget important things again and... well, you can never forget to look at your skin, right?"
It was impossible for Lan Wangji not to fall in love with him. Anyone would have. Such a kind, considerate, playful person, so beautiful, so artistic with everything he did - it was as if, with every move of his tools, Wei Wuxian didn't just leave his mark on Lan Wangji's body, but on his soul too.
"I...this is really unprofessional of me and I really shouldn't be doing this, but... frankly, I like you." The blush decorates Wei Wuxian's face so beautifully and Lan Wangji feels his own cheeks burn, his heart beating wildly in his chest. He smiles, shy, but with a glint in his eyes "And I think you like me too, because you've been here almost every day, and the 'I'm worried about healing' excuse is getting old."
Busted - but Lan Wangji knew it wasn't that good of an excuse anyway. However, he's done with excuses - and he pulls Wei Wuxian into a kiss instead, fully accountable and open about his intention.
And so incredibly happy.
Lan Wangji has three tattoos. The gentian flower, in memory of his mother, on his right arm, a pair of bunnies, a tribute to the love he and Wei Wuxian shared and...
Lan Wangji traces his fingers over the crudely drawn brand on Wei Wuxian's chest.
"This isn't yours." He says, and kisses over it, softly, as if the skin had yet to heal.
"No, it isn't... It was a... punishment. I pissed off the wrong people and I paid for it."
"Why didn't you remove it?"
"There are some things you can't erase, Lan Zhan, regardless of whether they show on your skin or not."
Lan Wangji remembered the symbol precisely - the lines, the contours of it, the sun it supposedly represents - and had it done too. Wanted to do it himself at first, drunk and mad with grief, but ultimately decided against it. Wei Wuxian wouldn't want him to die the same way he almost did.
"How about we get matching tattoos?" He asked one morning as he hopped onto the kitchen counter, coffee in hand, all but inviting Lan Zhan to kiss him.
He did, hungry and wanting as always, but Wei Ying seemed insistent on having a conversation right then, pushing Lan Zhan away enough so he could catch his breath. "I'm being serious, Lan Zhan, come on."
"So am I." And he kissed down the column of Wei Ying's neck as if to prove a point, hands sliding over the painted skin of his thighs.
"Lan Zhan, you're - ahh...- you're not listening to me!"
"I am. You sound pretty."
"That's not - mmh! - you know what, we should just get bunnies, since we're fucking like rabbits anyway!"
Sometimes, Lan Zhan can almost feel it, the gentle touch of Wei Ying's hand, the pinching of the needle, the warmth of being so close to the love of his life and distracting him with kisses when he shouldn't.
"Lan Zhan. Stay still, I mean it. I could really hurt you, and that would break my heart and my license!"
"You should not look so beautiful then."
Wei Ying lifted the tattoo gun off his skin and sighed, loudly. "Mister Lan, I may have to ask someone else to finish your tattoo, because you'll kill me with those words of yours."
Lan Zhan took advantage of the break to get into kissing his lover properly, smiling to himself as they parted and Wei Ying appeared entirely lovestruck, lips kiss-bruised.
"Okay, I'll behave. I don't want anyone but you."
It's been a long time since Lan Wangji has felt anything but hollow. He's been unable - and unwilling - to love anybody else other than his Wei Ying, and he's long resigned to a life of loneliness because of this conviction.
But he does dream, still, of a day when he passes by the old tattoo shop and the neon sign is lit up, the door opened wide, and Wei Wuxian rushing out to greet him, latch his arms around him and give him a sweet, smiling kiss.
Every morning as he passes by the place, his heart stutters with the tiniest surge of excitement.
Maybe there will be someone there today. Maybe, somehow, Wei Wuxian has returned, and he's still pursuing his dream and he still love Lan Wangji.
But the building stays stubbornly empty no matter how hard Lan Wangji hopes it not be so.

But one day, 13 years later, the neon sign is lit up and the door is opened. Lan Wangji nearly stumbles out of skin at the sight of the decrepit shop suddenly teeming with life and the distant sound of buzzing needles.
He rushes in, shaking with so much emotion he feels his knees might just give out.
Wei Ying!
The young man at the register glances at him curiously. The name badge on his shirt reads "Mo Xuanyu", and, as if awoken from a dream, Lan Wangji blinks once, twice, and realizes he doesn't recognize anything or anyone in the old establishment.
"Can I help you?" Mo Xuanyu asks, though Lan Wangji feels too shattered to do anything but shake his head.
How could he be so stupid? Of course he won't find Wei Wuxian here. There are other tattoo artists and the building couldn't have stayed abandoned forever.
The world has long moved on.
And Wei Wuxian is...
A voice calls from somewhere deep in the store, and the closer it gets, the more tears gather in Lan Wangji's eyes.
"Xuanyu, did the 10 am appointment arrive yet? I want to go get some co..."
Wei Wuxian stands frozen in the middle of the shop's reception, eyes wide as if unable to comprehend what he's seeing.
The stranger - no, not a stranger, not at all - smiles at him, honeyed and tearful, and Wei Wuxian's body moves before he realizes.
When he's finally in Lan Wangji's arms, and Lan Wangji is in his...
"Is this real, Lan Zhan? Tell me it is, tell me you're really here."
"I am here, Wei Ying. I've always been."

Prompt: Time travel shananigans: Wei Wuxian, trapped in a cave with Lan Qiren (and Wen Ruohan, maybe??)

“I thought this was going to be fun,” Wei Wuxian said, slumping against a convenient rock.
“Why did you think being stuck in a cave would be fun?” Lan Qiren asked suspiciously. “Also, sitting improperly is forbidden. You shouldn’t slouch!”
Wei Wuxian groaned.
He turned to look at Lan Qiren, who was sitting on top of a large rock. Quite properly, of course.
“How do you know so many rules?” he asked. “Aren’t you five?”
“I’m six.”
“Right, right. Six it is.”
Wei Wuxian wondered how in the world this had gone to such not fun places.
He’d thought meeting the great and fearsome Teacher Lan as a small child would be hilarious – he’d imagined a chubby-cheeked little hellion and an armload of stories that he’d be able to tell Lan Wangji and the juniors when he got back to his own time.
Instead, he got…well.
At least Lan Qiren was, in fact, chubby-cheeked.
He was also already a rigid old stickler who insisted on reciting the rules. A lot.
“That’s still an awful lot of rules to know, at your age,” Wei Wuxian said with a sigh, putting his chin on his hand. “You’ve already recited at least two dozen. Do you already know them all?”
Lan Qiren blushed.
He actually blushed.
Maybe this wasn’t that bad as all that. He was so cute.
“Not all of them,” Lan Qiren said meekly, hanging his head despondently. “Not on anything more than the surface level. I’m learning them as fast as I can, though.”
Wei Wuxian wanted to pinch his cheeks and ruffle his hair. Now this was more like what he’d been hoping for! Sure, he hadn’t expected someone who ended up with the sort of temper the elder Lan Qiren had to be such a shy cutie, but here they were, and where they were was amazing.
It’d be a bit better if they weren’t stuck in a cave, of course, but he supposed you couldn’t have everything…
“Senior Mo?”
“Mm?”
“Can I start reciting the rules again?” Lan Qiren asked. He was still looking at the ground. “It makes me feel better.”
Wei Wuxian pressed his hands to his chest as if it would contain the overwhelming feeling of having seen a tiny little kitten mew at him. This was so, so precious.
“Why would you feel bad?” he asked, smiling his best ‘trust me’ smile. “Just because we’re stuck in this cave? Don’t worry about it! We’re here together, aren’t we? We’ll find a way out.”
Boundless confidence usually worked on children, but Lan Qiren shook his head.
“I missed my schedule,” he said, and he sounded anxious, the poor thing. “I’m late for three whole things, and if we don’t get out, I’ll be late for the entire day.”
“So what? Think of it as a day off!”
Lan Qiren looked horrified. “Things have to be done in order,” he insisted. His little fists were balled up. “If they’re not done in order, they’ll be done wrong.”
“Is that so bad?”
“Yes,” Lan Qiren said, and something about his tone made Wei Wuxian turned to really look at him, surprised – Lan Qiren’s face was starting to scrunch up in genuine distress; he was very nearly on the verge of tears. “The rules are how people are supposed to behave. If you just follow them the right way, things will be all right. People won’t be angry at you, or hate you, or – or – not love you –”
“Oh, wait, hey there,” Wei Wuxian said, alarmed, reaching out for him, but it was too late; Lan Qiren curled himself up into a little ball and hid his face in his sleeves and…great, now Wei Wuxian felt like the world’s biggest bully. “Hey there, it’s all right, okay? Perform acts of chivalry is one of your foundational rules. I’m a guest here, your responsibility as the host, and you’re being chivalrous by caring for me. That outweighs the rules on punctuality or your chores, doesn’t it?”
Lan Qiren nodded. He seemed a little appeased, although he still looked miserable and anxious, his little hands twisting in his sleeves.
Wei Wuxian wondered, suddenly, whether there was some basis to that anxiety. He himself had never taken any of Madame Yu’s harsh words to heart – it wasn’t in his nature, he’d always been the sort of person who forgot pains as soon as they were over, but he knew others weren’t like him. Take poor Jiang Cheng, who tended to stew over the littlest thing, ruminating over things that were said long after the person who’d said them had forgotten them, even when they weren’t aimed at him. If Lan Qiren were more like Jiang Cheng…or worse, if some asshole in the sect actually did tell this poor child that he wouldn’t be loved if he didn’t get the rules right, which Wei Wuxian could definitely believe…ugh, no wonder the kid was terrified.
Wei Wuxian tried to suppress a grimace.
“Hey,” he said, aiming for casual. “Haven’t you ever taken a day off before? What does your mother say about that?”
“She’s dead.”
…oh, well done, Wei Wuxian. Well done.
First Jin Ling, now this – he just had a way of sticking his foot right in it, didn’t he?
“She died a few years ago,” Lan Qiren added, scrunching up his nose. “I don’t really remember her. My big brother said I killed her.”
Wei Wuxian had been about to try to change the subject, but he choked on air.
“He what?” he said, and then realized his volume had increased dramatically when Lan Qiren winced. “Sorry, I think I must have misheard you. He said you…what?”
“She got sick when I was born, it hurt her health,” Lan Qiren explained. “It was the same sickness that made it hard for her to go outside, and eventually she died because of it. So my big brother says…”
“He says that that makes it your fault?” Wei Wuxian asked, and Lan Qiren nodded. “Well, I say your big brother’s stupid.”
“You can’t say that! Talking behind others’ backs is forbidden!”
“Fine. He’s wrong, then. There’s no way that her death can be blamed on you, any more than my parents’ death in a night-hunt can be blamed on me needing to be fed and clothed and them needing to take on jobs no one else wants to make enough money to do that.” Wei Wuxian frowned a little. “How old is he, anyway?”
If this big brother (presumably the one who would be Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji’s father, and therefore empirically proven to be wrong) was only a year or two older, seven or eight, maybe such a terrible statement could be forgiven as lashing out in grief, but to lash out like that, especially to someone younger, was only just barely within the realms of acceptable – maybe if it had happened right at the time, with several years having passed since the time of the statement –
“He’s ten years older than me,” Lan Qiren said. “Which means he’s…uh…”
“He’s sixteen?!” Wei Wuxian yelped. “And he said – when did he say it? Right after she died?”
Lan Qiren blinked owlishly at him. “No, he says it every once in a while, whenever he’s really angry at me. The last time was a few months ago, I think? Why? Does it matter?”
Wei Wuxian had a sudden urge to play a very mean prank on a teenager. Which was immature of him, but also, what was wrong with Lan Wangji’s father? Well – wrong with him on top of everything Wei Wuxian already knew was wrong with him?
“Didn’t your father say something?”
“When?”
“…when your brother said that to you.”
“Oh. No. I don’t think he was there – I only see him once a month, and only if I’ve done well enough in my classes.”
Wei Wuxian could feel his eye twitching.
Lan Qiren must have noticed, because he tried to clarify: “There’s no reason for me to go see him if I haven’t done well, since there’s nothing worth saying to be said to him if I haven’t,” he explained, very earnestly and very obviously trying to be helpful, when in fact every word out of his mouth was making it worse. “My teachers have explained it to me. If I haven’t done well, it’s better not to see him at all – that way I’ll just get scolded.”
He looked a little wistful, though. As if he wouldn’t mind the scolding, if it meant he could see his father more often.
Wei Wuxian had seen a similar expression on Jiang Cheng’s face more than a few times.
“He wouldn’t have said anything, anyway,” Lan Qiren added, the wistfulness fading into sadness. “He likes my brother better.”
When they’d been young, every time Jiang Cheng got like this, Wei Wuixan would reassure him and then distract him, cheering him up with nonsense and promises of a better future. With this little doll-like Lan Qiren, whose future Wei Wuxian already knew – a future that saw him an old man before his time, stuck leading the Lan sect for years and years, raising his nephews, teaching brats like Wei Wuxian himself, absolutely none of which Wei Wuxian could say for sure that Lan Qiren had ever actually wanted because he’d never asked, never questioned, never wondered if the older man had a life or dreams or ambitions…
“I’m going to get us out of this cave,” Wei Wuxian said, suddenly reenergized. “And then, since the day’s lost anyway, we are going to go have some fun, you and me. I’m going to give you an adventure you’ll never forget!”
“I thought you said we were going to have fun,” Lan Qiren grumbled. “An adventure doesn’t sound fun.”
What a little old man he was.
When Wei Wuxian got back to the future, he’d have to…probably say nothing ever, except maybe to Lan Wangji; Lan Qiren would undoubtedly be horrified if Wei Wuxian ever made an actual overture of friendship or anything like that, and finding out that Wei Wuxian had met him in his childhood might very well drive him into an apoplexy of rage and embarrassment.
Not that that was going to stop Wei Wuxian. He’d find a way to make it up to the old man if it was the last thing he ever did!

Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan were standing awkwardly by Cloud Recesses's entrance, frowns in their beautiful faces. They were gently forced by their mother and uncle to come here and wait for their betrothal's arrival for the Gusu Lan classes. It was the polite thing to do, and the worst thing they could ever do.
They both hated the fact they were promised to women they barely knew, the teenage experience of falling in love being taken away from them without even questioning.
Laugh could be heard as well as loud talking, making Jin Zixuan scowl and shifting a little to the side so he wouldn't be staring at the people climbing up the steps.
Lan Wangji was too proper for this, so he just blinked and waited patiently.
Soon enough, a small flock of purple robes came out from the mountain curve, a young trio leading the rest of the disciples while talking and laughing. Two girls and one boy, their betrotheds and their younger brother, who's also the heir of their sext, Yunmeng Jiang.
The tallest girl, using darker colors and a bright red ribbon on her hair, threw her head back and laughed loud enough for them to hear clearly, while the smaller, Jiang Yanli, giggles behind her delicate lilac sleeve.
That was Wei Wuxian, his current companion's soon to be headache. Wife. He means wife.
Jin Zixuan scoffed, he never really got along of the girl and her brother, and almost always were running from his own fiance - Jiang Yanli. He turned his head slightly to look at Lan Wangji and say something about Wei Wuxian's lack of manners, and got the shock of his life when the other boy looked stricken, eyes wide and mouth minimally open, his ears in the brightest red.
Looking at where Lan Wangji was staring, he saw Wei Wuxian flipping her hair out of her face when the wind blew. She looked up and realize they were there and, clearly staring at Lan Wangji, she blushed, looking shy.
"No." Jin Zixuan declared.
Lan Wangji blinked and look at him for a quick moment before going back to staring at his fiance who started to walk faster.
"No! I refuse!" then, he turned back and walking (stomped) back to his quarters.
